- 0:00Speaker 1: Our coverage begins at three point thirty tomorrow afternoon with
- 0:04long Orange Game Day with Cameron Parker and my card
- 0:07ball Harde and Mark Henry from the Hook them hangout there?
- 0:12Speaker 2: Who came up with the hook? Them hangout by the way.
- 0:15Speaker 3: I think are Oh I was gonna say, hokhim hang out.
- 0:17That sounds like a Drew Martin thing.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it might be.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Drew Martin's the big brains behind a lot of Bevil Boulevard.
- 0:23Speaker 1: That's right, and uh, and it's there in the wind
- 0:26Chip circle there in bev Old Boulevard. So there's an
- 0:28awful lot of stuff going on this morning. Seven o'clock
- 0:32this morning, our friends at k XN had Kristen Curry,
- 0:37their meteorologists, doing a live shot inside of dk R
- 0:40Texas Memorial Stadium. Oh wow, and she had Drew Martin.
- 0:43And Drew was already dressed to the nines at a
- 0:45sport jacket on the tie and really really sharply.
- 0:48Speaker 2: He always is anyway.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Yeah, he might be the sharpest dressed man at Texas.
- 0:54I think I know Sark on game days, Yeah, he can, really,
- 0:59but I've never seen Drew Martin not dressed up to
- 1:02the Nines.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yeah, looked really good. And how about last Saturday they
- 1:05had the Cotton Bowl there.
- 1:06Speaker 3: With that, I thought it was pink from the press box.
- 1:09But Terry Kelly, who of course is with Longhorn Radio Networks,
- 1:13she showed me the real picture and it was burn
- 1:16orange maybe the sun.
- 1:17Speaker 1: It was a Gingham orange jacket, Burn orange jacket, Gingham
- 1:22burn orange jacket and a big burn orange and white
- 1:25bow tie and he was styling off of that. Rodney
- 1:30Terry can also dress really nice. He does well at times,
- 1:33even though now in the post COVID portion of our
- 1:37athletic lives, he does like a lot of other coaches
- 1:41and wears the coaches polos or the warm ups and
- 1:45the long sleeves and stuff like that.
- 1:48Speaker 2: But he took part in.
- 1:51Speaker 1: The SEC Basketball media days a couple of days ago.
- 1:55We had a couple of his comment Chester get a
- 1:57couple of other ones.
- 1:59Speaker 2: The season and.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Today for going into this season, I want I want
- 2:05to go back to a cut that he had talking
- 2:08about his outstanding freshman Trey Johnson, because he was asked
- 2:12about Jason Kent and Julian Larry, the two transfers from
- 2:15Indiana State coming in. He was asked about, uh, Traymond Mark,
- 2:21Tremon Mark transferring in from Arkansas, what he brings to
- 2:24the team. But there was so much excitement about Trey
- 2:27Johnson from Garland and the Dallas for wed there. He
- 2:30actually played for a time at Lake Highlands and then
- 2:33finished up at the prep school at Link Academy in Missouri,
- 2:37and was asked about his attitude, his development, and the
- 2:41work that Johnson put in in the off season to
- 2:44be ready for his freshman season.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Trey, you know, again, I allude to the fact that
- 2:48we have six returners and you know, six six gays
- 2:53from the portal, four freshmen, so we got ten new
- 2:56players and again a blend of old in a blend
- 3:00of new and young. And uh, you know he being
- 3:04one of the young guys. Uh, and a guy that
- 3:06I think again, you know, media wants to get familiar with.
- 3:10Speaker 5: He's He's a guy that's deserving of being here today.
- 3:13Speaker 4: Uh.
- 3:13Speaker 5: He's an extremely talented player.
- 3:14Speaker 4: He's a Tip five player in the country last year
- 3:17in his class. He's been the best player in his class. Uh,
- 3:21in the state of Texas his entire career. He's a
- 3:25guy that, uh, we think fits our culture at a
- 3:28very high level in terms of what he brings to
- 3:30the table. Super competitive, a kid that wants to get
- 3:35better every day. He's proud of being from the state
- 3:39of Texas and representing Uh, you know Texas at the
- 3:43flagship program.
- 3:44Speaker 5: And uh, he's a super competitor.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Uh.
- 3:47Speaker 4: I got a chance to coach Kevin Durant for one
- 3:49year at Texas and uh, he and Kevin had a
- 3:53lot have a lot of things that kind of come
- 3:54from the same cloth in terms of incredible work ethic.
- 3:58Is a guy that we have to literally push him
- 4:00out in the gym. He's in the gym twenty four
- 4:02to seven, much like Kevin was. And he's a super
- 4:07competitive kid. You put the scoreboard on and uh, he's
- 4:11competing at another level in terms of really one to
- 4:13win and compete at a very high level. So he's
- 4:18a guy that will counting on this year that you
- 4:20have a big year and do big things in Austin.
- 4:22Speaker 1: There's a lot of excitement about him. He's the preseason
- 4:25SEC Freshman of the Year, so it could be pretty exciting.
- 4:28Speaker 2: To watch him play as well.
- 4:29Speaker 1: He was asked a couple other questions, one about Kentucky's
- 4:33new head coach Mark Pope. Texas, by the way, will
- 4:37play Kentucky for the first time ever in Austin when
- 4:41the Wildcats come in February. I'll be the first time
- 4:44ever for Kentucky to play there, so that'll be interesting.
- 4:48Of course, Texas has played in Lexington before, but Kentucky
- 4:52has new head coach Mark Pope, who was at BYU
- 4:55last year, and he I thought was one of the
- 4:59more impressive co which is that I saw that that
- 5:02we had a chance to see both on the road
- 5:04and at home for Texas basketball games.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I thought he did a heck of a job with BYU.
- 5:08Speaker 3: He's a good head coach. That was an impressive BYU team. Now,
- 5:11of course that environment was absolutely insane in provo, A
- 5:16lot of fun to experience, not a lot of fun
- 5:18to watch Texas lose that game, but they were a
- 5:20team going to tournament that I had high hopes for.
- 5:22And I thought Kentucky made a fantastic higher When you
- 5:27lose Caliperia like that be able to find a coach,
- 5:29and I thought they did a good job replacing him
- 5:31with Mark Pope.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and Pope of course had played there. Now he's
- 5:35there and since he just faced him. Rodney Terry was asked,
- 5:40you know what what he feels Mark Pope can do
- 5:43for Kentucky.
- 5:44Speaker 4: You know, again, you know, Mark's a tremendous coach, a
- 5:47tremendous person. He was a good player as well. I
- 5:52think having a chance, you know, I think I'm living in,
- 5:55you know.
- 5:56Speaker 5: My dream job. It's my dream job here.
- 5:58Speaker 4: You know, every day I'm blamed in honor to be
- 6:01the head coach at the University of Texas. I think
- 6:03he feels the same way about Kentucky. You know, he's
- 6:06a former player, won a national championship there. There's a
- 6:09lot of pride and uh and in walking into the
- 6:13office every day when you when you feel like you're
- 6:16living a dream every day. I can't speak for him,
- 6:19but I would think that it was a it would
- 6:20be a dream for him to be the head coach
- 6:23at the at at the University of Kentucky.
- 6:25Speaker 5: And uh, I think that, Uh.
- 6:27Speaker 4: You know, his teams play with the with the great
- 6:30spirit about themselves. They're they're very unselfish, they share the basketball,
- 6:36very good offensively. Uh So, so you have to prepare
- 6:39in terms of really trying to have a really good
- 6:42defensive mindset because they're they're they're a team that can
- 6:45really score the basketball. Uh in my short time, you know,
- 6:48competing against his team in the Big twelve.
- 6:51Speaker 5: Uh. But you know, very well coached. H really good guy,
- 6:55a great person.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Uh speaking of coaches.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Uh, yesterday we played one cut brought to you a
- 7:02piece of sound where Rodney Terry was asked about his
- 7:04relationship with Chris Beard from their time together when Beard
- 7:08was here for like just over a season as we know,
- 7:11and Rodney was his associate head coach, and then of
- 7:15course became the interim head coach when Chris Beard was dismissed,
- 7:20and then became the permanent head coach after Texas made
- 7:26its run to.
- 7:26Speaker 2: The Elite eight.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Chris Beard, of course then surfaces at Ole Miss and
- 7:33he's getting ready to match up with Chris Beard again.
- 7:37In case you didn't know, Texas will play Ole Miss
- 7:39in Oxford. They will not play them in Austin. They
- 7:41will play them in Oxford, is the way the SEC
- 7:45schedule was drawn up. But he was asked in the
- 7:49difference the difference that he encountered with Chris Beard in
- 7:55year one and year two when he took over the program.
- 7:59Speaker 4: No I'll tell you what you know that first year,
- 8:01we were really trying to build a culture.
- 8:04Speaker 5: We came in and really was trying to instill in
- 8:06our guys.
- 8:06Speaker 4: How hard you have to work, Uh, trust the process,
- 8:11competing at a at an incredible level, having a physical mindset.
- 8:16Speaker 5: Uh. Those were all things we really tried to build on.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Preparation, trying to be one of the most, you know,
- 8:21best prepared teams in the country. I think the one
- 8:25thing that was claiming for us, that was the difference
- 8:27from year one to year two was that we had continuity.
- 8:31We all strived to try to have continuity. I have
- 8:34six returners this year, four guys that played significant minutes
- 8:38for us last year. Anytime, I think in this landscape
- 8:41and all the college athletics, if you're able to have
- 8:44some form a level of continuity, then you give yourself
- 8:48a chance. Because those guys are they help They helped
- 8:51build a culture, They helped defend the culture every day.
- 8:54In year two at Texas, we had guys that had
- 8:57they were around from year one.
- 8:59Speaker 5: They were now defending the culture.
- 9:02Speaker 4: The new guys we brought in, they were showing our guys,
- 9:04this is what we do and this is how we
- 9:06do it every day. Here are the expectations, here are
- 9:09the standards, and uh, this is how we do it.
- 9:13Speaker 5: Uh.
- 9:13Speaker 4: And then I think when you're able to have a
- 9:14guy for a second year in your program, you know,
- 9:17he had the chance to build on what he did
- 9:19from year one and and and be great in year two.
- 9:23You know, if you if you're able to have a
- 9:24guy for three years, you know, just the continuity and
- 9:28and and and having a feel for what you're doing
- 9:30and how you want to do it, the pace you
- 9:32want to do it, it rubs off and it carries
- 9:35over to other to other guys that are coming in.
- 9:37So we were able to have that, and uh, we
- 9:40had a number of different guys that had much better
- 9:43years from year one to year two because of that.
- 9:46They were familiar, comfortable with our system and they could
- 9:50go out and really be themselves and and not have
- 9:53to do as much thinking and trying to figure out
- 9:55what we're trying to get done as a program.
- 9:57Speaker 1: You know, what uh Artie just described there is very
- 10:03much what Sark has been able to build and do
- 10:06year one to year two, year two to year three,
- 10:08year three to year four. Everybody has taken note of
- 10:12what Sark has been able to build five and seven
- 10:14in year one as he was trying to establish a
- 10:16culture and get his type of players.
- 10:18Speaker 2: In year two up to eight.
- 10:20Speaker 1: And five and a Bowl berth that second year is
- 10:24the culture began to take hold, and again building the
- 10:27recruiting base. Last year year three, twelve and two, winning
- 10:30a Big Twelve conference championship in the final year in
- 10:34the league and going to the College Football Playoff for
- 10:36the first time and stacking those recruiting classes. And now
- 10:40season four for long Warn Football, a six and oh
- 10:43start at number one national ranking with a huge game
- 10:45tomorrow night on campus against Georgia.
- 10:48Speaker 2: But what is it?
- 10:50Speaker 1: ESPN's College Football Playoff predictor says right now, Right now,
- 10:54it sees Texas with a ninety six percent chance to
- 10:58reach a college football playoffs. Still a lot of football
- 11:00left to be played, but the first half of the
- 11:02season has gone very well. That's what Rodney Terry and
- 11:05his stafford trying to build. That's what Vick Schaeffer and
- 11:08stafford trying to build. That's what Jeff Schlossnagel will be
- 11:10trying to build. What we've seen Ange Kelly with Texas
- 11:13Soccer Jared Elliott with the back to back national championships,
- 11:16and volleyball the national championships and the great runs there
- 11:21by Edric Flooriel coach Flow and the mens and women's
- 11:23track teams both the indoor and outdoor at the University
- 11:26of Texas, swimming and diving now with Bob Bowman taking
- 11:29over for the immortal Eddie Reese, all of those softball,
- 11:33with what Mike White has done in getting Texas to
- 11:35the College World Series, just the Texas tennis team winning
- 11:38national titles and being in the National conversation golf of course,
- 11:42so it just goes on and on, and that's the
- 11:44culture that all of those programs are trying to get gone. Finally,
- 11:48I mean, this was one more humorous moment if I'm
- 11:51remembering this correctly, Kim, is this in the Q and
- 11:54A portion that Trey Johnson himself goes up and asks
- 11:59Artie question in.
- 12:01Speaker 3: This So I think what happened was is that Trey
- 12:06Johnson standing in the back of the media room and
- 12:09just puts his hand up and.
- 12:11Speaker 2: They handed him a microphone.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Microphone because you know, it'll happen a lot with availabilities
- 12:16like it happened on Monday with Quinn Yours with Jake
- 12:19Majors kind.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Of joining the media from and he's kind from.
- 12:22Speaker 3: And asking a question. Now, I think at this because
- 12:26there wasn't a lot of media that traveled to Birmingham
- 12:28here that they were able to fit in Trey Johnson's question.
- 12:33Speaker 2: So here it is.
- 12:34Speaker 1: This is the standout incoming freshman Trey Johnson. Somehow a
- 12:38microphone microphone found its way to him to ask a
- 12:42question of head coach Ronny Terry.
- 12:48Speaker 4: No.
- 12:48Speaker 5: I'll tell you what I think.
- 12:49Speaker 4: The best thing about this group that we put together
- 12:52is I think that these guys all really like each other.
- 12:56I think that's so important this day in time, you know,
- 12:59and you know in the summer, when you bring your
- 13:01team in you really try to establish some chemistry with guys.
- 13:05But this group here, I think they did it organically.
- 13:08You know, you don't want as a coach to have
- 13:10to say, hey, guys, you guys need to hang out
- 13:12together over here, or you guys plan on doing this
- 13:15doing these things together. This group loves being around each other.
- 13:19I think they cut up with each other off the court.
- 13:21They spend a lot of time off the court with
- 13:23each other. And I think again, when you have great
- 13:25chemistry off the court, I think it lends you an
- 13:28opportunity to have really good chemistry on the court.
- 13:31Speaker 5: And you know, I think these guys I have each
- 13:34other's back.
- 13:35Speaker 4: I challenge them to be great teammates every day, but
- 13:38I think they truly like being around each other. I'll
- 13:41see them cutting up and having fun with each other,
- 13:44and to me, that's the best part of it, because
- 13:46it's really what makes their experience, what it's all about.
- 13:50Speaker 5: Those are the moments that they're gonna remember the most.
- 13:52Speaker 4: When they're on the bus, cutting up on the bus
- 13:54and having fun in the bus.
- 13:56Speaker 5: You know, when they're back in the.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Locker room and they're and they're talking like they're the
- 13:59ball show, you know, wish they do.
- 14:01Speaker 5: We got Nick Cody, another freshman.
- 14:03Speaker 4: He's a barbershop guy, you know, and he's back and
- 14:06then he's holding court.
- 14:07Speaker 5: You know.
- 14:08Speaker 4: But but I hear that, and that's what you miss
- 14:11as a coach when you were a player. You miss
- 14:14being around your teammates and having fun and cutting up.
- 14:17That's what it's all about. And so that's what I
- 14:20would say about this team.
- 14:21Speaker 5: I think they all really like each other.
- 14:23Speaker 4: I think they're all super competitive, and I'm excited about
- 14:27our journey and we got a long ways to go,
- 14:30but I really liked this group a lot.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Okay, what you didn't hear was Trey asking the question.
- 14:35But what he asked was what's the best part about
- 14:38this team? And so and and credit RTAM dealing with
- 14:42the question is a legitimate question and answering it just
- 14:45like you would any other regular reporter.
- 14:47Speaker 2: That was pretty cool as well.
- 14:49Speaker 1: All right, coming up, we've got some other college football
- 14:52notes to get to when we come back right here
- 14:54on sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the
- 14:56iHeartRadio app.
