Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Willie Jackson: Former Māori Development Minister on the Ihumātao deal
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The Maori Development Minister Tama Paultucker has warned the group,
- 0:04Speaker 1: this is the group tasked with deciding the future of Ihumato,
- 0:08Speaker 1: that they could be shown the door if they can't
- 0:10Speaker 1: find a solution. The Crown bought Humato for thirty million
- 0:13Speaker 1: dollars back in twenty twenty. You remember that this is
- 0:15Speaker 1: to end the occupation over its commercial development. They wanted
- 0:17Speaker 1: to build houses there. Since then, there's been a group
- 0:20Speaker 1: and you may not have known this, a group of
- 0:22Speaker 1: monafenua and Crown reps who have been tasked with forming
- 0:26Speaker 1: a plan which must involve putting Maori harsing on the
- 0:29Speaker 1: disputed land. It hasn't happened yet. Willie Jackson's minister was
- 0:33Speaker 1: a Minister in charge at the time the Crown bought
- 0:35Speaker 1: the land. He's the current Labor Maori Development spokesperson. Mordena
- 0:39Speaker 1: Good morning.
- 0:40Speaker 2: In Modina, Madina, Right.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Hey, good to have you on the show. So Tama
- 0:44Speaker 1: Pawtucker's basically said, if you guys can't sort your out,
- 0:48Speaker 1: then I might step in. Is that not fair enough?
- 0:52Speaker 2: Well, it's been given five years. So the xual agreement
- 0:58Speaker 2: was signed off in July are twenty two. That's when
- 1:01Speaker 2: we the crown put our representatives on. So we put
- 1:05Speaker 2: two representatives on and they were given five years. You know,
- 1:09Speaker 2: of course we want progress and all of that, but
- 1:12Speaker 2: I mean a deal is a deal, isn't it. You
- 1:14Speaker 2: see this governments into breaching that anything, it seems with
- 1:19Speaker 2: Copropa Maori. And yes we want things to happen, and
- 1:23Speaker 2: of course we want housing there, particularly for Co Marto.
- 1:26Speaker 2: But it's just it's just the sort of weekly attack,
- 1:30Speaker 2: isn't it all the Ford weekly or Ford mighty attack
- 1:33Speaker 2: on Mari. If it's not, if it's not this, then
- 1:36Speaker 2: it's a two or Maori. If it's not this, it's
- 1:38Speaker 2: treated legislation. If it's not, it's mary House.
- 1:43Speaker 1: And yeah, but how can you before how can you
- 1:47Speaker 1: be four years on from the sale, you know, thirty
- 1:50Speaker 1: million dollars in public money, have no houses, no plan
- 1:54Speaker 1: and no idea of what's going on.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Well, well, one there is I think there is a plan,
- 1:59Speaker 2: and two agree. Well people can't agree on some things.
- 2:06Speaker 2: But this was a five year agreement with the people.
- 2:10Speaker 2: So actually they speak very clear. If we didn't sign
- 2:13Speaker 2: off in terms of a deal until July twenty two,
- 2:16Speaker 2: and the deal was a five year deal. So you know,
- 2:18Speaker 2: just because you and Tama Portucker want things to happen tomorrow,
- 2:22Speaker 2: it doesn't always happen that way. And I think there
- 2:25Speaker 2: has to be some credibility shown and Marty has to
- 2:29Speaker 2: be given the space to do the deal. That's the
- 2:31Speaker 2: that's the reality. Now we can get all tough and say, oh,
- 2:34Speaker 2: you married's got to get it together tomorrow. We all
- 2:37Speaker 2: want housing, we all want the best for the community.
- 2:39Speaker 2: But let's just let's just work us through it. But
- 2:42Speaker 2: they get all you have to keep running the anti
- 2:45Speaker 2: Marti line that this government keeps running. And that's what's
- 2:48Speaker 2: incredibly disappointing. I live in not too far from Humato,
- 2:53Speaker 2: and people are sick of it. You know. We came
- 2:55Speaker 2: to a peaceful solution. But everyone well you will.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Know then that the comataware who just want to live
- 3:01Speaker 1: there in a nice house that's insulated and warm and dry,
- 3:05Speaker 1: you know. And here we are, hang.
- 3:09Speaker 2: On, hang on the co mart The king, okay, the
- 3:13Speaker 2: king was facilitating this prosis on behalf of the local
- 3:18Speaker 2: co mart and on behalf of everyone. And of course
- 3:21Speaker 2: that's what I want, and that's what the local co
- 3:24Speaker 2: martyrs want. But give them the space and honor the agreement.
- 3:28Speaker 2: That's all I'm saying. And if they don't, if they
- 3:30Speaker 2: don't hit their deadline before the agreement finishes, then obviously
- 3:35Speaker 2: you're into something else. But don't try cup things a
- 3:38Speaker 2: quarter of the way through it. I mean, I know
- 3:40Speaker 2: that's how you operate, Ryan, and you're the ones he fever.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Come on, mate, give the marri it's a fair crack.
- 3:45Speaker 2: He give us a bit of space. You know, we
- 3:47Speaker 2: deserve an opportunities.
- 3:48Speaker 1: I'm god all right, Well, thank you for coming on.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I appreciate it. Have a good morning, Kildor Willy Jackson,
- 3:53Speaker 1: who's Labour's not the development spokesperson.
