- 0:00Speaker 1: Maybe Konhackey, coach the Show, Bob Joey Sadam Giordino, Mike Kavanaugh.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Here Husky's in action this weekend home and home against
- 0:06Speaker 1: New Hampshire. Game one is Friday night up in Durham,
- 0:10Speaker 1: and game two, the only home game in the month
- 0:14Speaker 1: of January for the Huskies, is Saturday afternoon at Tscano
- 0:18Speaker 1: three point thirty correct correct, and both.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Games can be seen on ESPN Plus.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Well, Mike, going into the break, I mentioned your captain
- 0:24Speaker 1: Hudson Schandor has come alive in the scoring department points
- 0:27Speaker 1: in four straight, eight of his last nine three goals,
- 0:30Speaker 1: seven assists, had the empty netter on Saturday, and you
- 0:34Speaker 1: put a new line together on Saturday for the game.
- 0:36Speaker 1: You had Jake on one well, Jake Rashard on one side,
- 0:40Speaker 1: Joey Mouldowney on the other, and it seemed to work
- 0:42Speaker 1: pretty well.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I did. We Actually they played together a little
- 0:49Speaker 3: bit out in Milwaukee as well, so no, they did.
- 0:54Speaker 3: They had a pretty good weekend, and I like the
- 0:56Speaker 3: way that all four of our lines played. To be
- 1:00Speaker 3: honest with you, I shouldn't say that the first period
- 1:03Speaker 3: I didn't, but from the second and third period on
- 1:06Speaker 3: they were really you know, I thought buzzing all four lines.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Yeah, what have you seen from honey to get him going?
- 1:15Speaker 3: He's always he's just one of those kids who just
- 1:17Speaker 3: plays the game the right way. You have said he's
- 1:19Speaker 3: always been. I said our you know, he's our patrese Bergern.
- 1:23Speaker 3: You know, he can play in all situations. He wins
- 1:25Speaker 3: big face offs for us. He wants some big face
- 1:28Speaker 3: off six on five, like not losing him clean, which
- 1:31Speaker 3: is huge. So he just does so many little things
- 1:35Speaker 3: so well, and he's a tremendous positive influence in that
- 1:40Speaker 3: locker room.
- 1:41Speaker 4: I know we are talking about the Harvard game because
- 1:43Speaker 4: it was the most recent one, but we haven't had
- 1:45Speaker 4: you on the Coaches Show since that trip out to Milwaukee.
- 1:48Speaker 4: So what was the travel? The whole orientation of those
- 1:53Speaker 4: several days where you get an opportunity to be on
- 1:55Speaker 4: the road with the guys and maybe it's a little
- 1:57Speaker 4: bit of a different experience than just a trip Hockey
- 2:00Speaker 4: East weekend.
- 2:01Speaker 3: It was great. I love playing in Christmas tournaments. You know,
- 2:03Speaker 3: the tough part is you got two practices and you
- 2:06Speaker 3: got to tee it up. That's a little bit tough.
- 2:08Speaker 3: But other than that. It's just a great way I
- 2:14Speaker 3: think for your team to bond. You're playing for a trophy,
- 2:18Speaker 3: the games just have a little more meaning to them.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Pretty good crowds, and we hadn't traveled in a while.
- 2:24Speaker 3: We hadn't been on a plane in a long time,
- 2:26Speaker 3: so it was good for us to get out west.
- 2:28Speaker 3: It's something that I'm going next year. We're going to
- 2:30Speaker 3: go out to Colorado College. It's something that kind of
- 2:33Speaker 3: went away a little bit with COVID. Everybody was conscious
- 2:36Speaker 3: of staying a little closer to home. But I'd like
- 2:39Speaker 3: to take at least one Western trip every year. I
- 2:42Speaker 3: think it's important to play against opposing buildings. It's very
- 2:47Speaker 3: similar to if you have to go on the road
- 2:49Speaker 3: in the NCAAs and play somewhere out west. At least
- 2:53Speaker 3: it's not foreign to when you're playing those games.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Mike, you mentioned all four lines playing well.
- 2:58Speaker 1: With the exception of the first period, but coming off
- 3:01Speaker 1: the break, it just seems like everybody is contributing in
- 3:04Speaker 1: some way, shape or format on the scoreboard.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Yeah, it's, you know, a real luxury to have four
- 3:09Speaker 3: lines that can score a lot of times before the
- 3:12Speaker 3: game you look at opposing teams line chart, and you'll see, okay,
- 3:16Speaker 3: this this line only has two goals all year, or
- 3:18Speaker 3: this line might have three goals all year, and all right,
- 3:22Speaker 3: this is the line we have to pay attention to.
- 3:24Speaker 3: But with us, we have up and down. We have
- 3:27Speaker 3: scoring up and down our lineup. So it's something that's
- 3:31Speaker 3: a luxury that we really haven't had in a long time.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Does it make it a challenge for you if you're
- 3:35Speaker 4: tied with two minutes left and you you know coaches
- 3:38Speaker 4: want to run their best line, say double them up
- 3:40Speaker 4: and give them atllle extra run. Does it cause confusion
- 3:43Speaker 4: as to okay, who are we going with?
- 3:44Speaker 3: Not really, because a lot of that's just driven by
- 3:49Speaker 3: who's playing the best during the game. So like Phillips line,
- 3:53Speaker 3: Sitars line would have been going out there because I
- 3:55Speaker 3: thought they were giving us up. They scored up, they
- 3:58Speaker 3: created the first goal, we got Caravan's goal. That was
- 4:01Speaker 3: all their work. So I thought they were great. They
- 4:04Speaker 3: were going to continue to play. And even when we
- 4:07Speaker 3: went when they pulled the goalie with five minutes ago,
- 4:10Speaker 3: six on five, I put them out there. I trusted
- 4:12Speaker 3: them they were playing that well.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Speaking of goalies, Calum Tung has certainly taken the reins.
- 4:19Speaker 2: As you're starting netminer.
- 4:20Speaker 1: He has been spectacular since his first game against UMass
- 4:24Speaker 1: a little back in late November.
- 4:25Speaker 3: He's played very, very well. You know, I think his
- 4:30Speaker 3: goals against is under two.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Yep.
- 4:32Speaker 3: He's been really solid. It was unfortunate he came down
- 4:34Speaker 3: with the stomach bug against Wisconsin, uh, you know, because
- 4:38Speaker 3: he played really well against Alaska the night before. But
- 4:42Speaker 3: the other, you know, the flip side is Tom Muslik
- 4:44Speaker 3: was playing really well before he got hurt. He's full
- 4:47Speaker 3: up now and back practicing and playing really well.
- 4:51Speaker 2: So so you have a good problem to have with too.
- 4:53Speaker 3: That that's this. You know, what's better. The only thing
- 4:56Speaker 3: better than having one real good goal he is having
- 4:58Speaker 3: two real good goalis. Yep.
- 5:00Speaker 4: You had said addressing the media last week midweek before
- 5:03Speaker 4: the game against Harvard that and it hadn't occurred to
- 5:08Speaker 4: me that, okay, having you haven't had all three goalies
- 5:11Speaker 4: necessarily either physically healthy or not sick, whatever it may be.
- 5:17Speaker 4: And you would say it's because of the wear and
- 5:20Speaker 4: tear of practice. How goalies get worn down. And I
- 5:23Speaker 4: think to people listening or watching you might not think that,
- 5:26Speaker 4: but what is the extent that a goalie faces in
- 5:29Speaker 4: hundreds of shots?
- 5:30Speaker 2: What does it look like in a practice.
- 5:32Speaker 4: For a while?
- 5:34Speaker 3: Typically when you have three goalies, it's not too bad.
- 5:37Speaker 3: And as the season goes on, we'll start tapering our
- 5:40Speaker 3: practices down. We don't have to put a lot of
- 5:43Speaker 3: systems in anymore, you know, we don't have to spend
- 5:45Speaker 3: a lot of time on that. Our kids know how
- 5:47Speaker 3: we want to play, so they won't see as many shots.
- 5:51Speaker 3: But early in the year they're seeing a lot more shots.
- 5:55Speaker 3: You're trying to condition your team, Your practices are longer,
- 5:58Speaker 3: and you need three goaltenders. And this is the first
- 6:02Speaker 3: time all year essentially that we've had three goaltenders healthy.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Was it Laura on the call last week that just
- 6:09Speaker 1: raved it was asking a lot of questions about Tats.
- 6:12Speaker 1: It just seems like there's so much energy that he
- 6:14Speaker 1: brings and and he obviously had a couple of goals
- 6:16Speaker 1: against Hartford, and I mean, he just seems to be
- 6:19Speaker 1: that guy.
- 6:19Speaker 2: And we saw that.
- 6:20Speaker 1: I think it was the BC game there last year,
- 6:23Speaker 1: the one that we did his line that I think
- 6:26Speaker 1: he was with Tabor just the way they for checked,
- 6:28Speaker 1: got the energy going and got you guys back in
- 6:30Speaker 1: the game and he's never stopped.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Yeah, he has that. He's got a little Brad Marsha
- 6:36Speaker 3: on to him.
- 6:37Speaker 2: It's just a little Yeah. That's a good that's a
- 6:39Speaker 2: good comparison. Yeah. I like that.
- 6:42Speaker 3: He's feisty, plays on the edge, but he's got a
- 6:47Speaker 3: high end skill and he can really skate. So you know, now,
- 6:52Speaker 3: the other night, I thought the first period he was
- 6:55Speaker 3: a little out of whack, and that can happen sometimes,
- 6:57Speaker 3: but he did settle down and play. You know, obviously
- 7:00Speaker 3: a great third period, scoring two really big goals for us.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Was the goal one of the goals he scored, Joey
- 7:06Speaker 1: I think gave him a pass across the crease.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Christin Fraser made a nice play across the grease. Yeah,
- 7:13Speaker 3: the empty net. So it was a really good goal.
- 7:16Speaker 3: But the second goal he scored is one I really liked.
- 7:18Speaker 3: He got position on the defenseman and got his stick
- 7:21Speaker 3: free and Tray Scott made a dynamite play sifting it
- 7:25Speaker 3: down and finding his stick and he tipped it between
- 7:27Speaker 3: his legs through and for the goal.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Three. It's just for Tray that game.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:32Speaker 4: As we talk about Ryan Tattle, one of the things
- 7:34Speaker 4: you brought up in that call was the score for
- 7:37Speaker 4: cancer game that he had and the support of Hudson
- 7:40Speaker 4: Chandor and just their involvement together. Obviously it's Ryan tattle,
- 7:43Speaker 4: but just to have the support of a teammate when
- 7:45Speaker 4: you're so far from home come out and help support you.
- 7:48Speaker 4: What is it like as a coach to see that
- 7:52Speaker 4: happening with one of your team captains, but it's another
- 7:55Speaker 4: player being supported, and just the work that Ryan has
- 7:58Speaker 4: done to bring for cancer to the forefront.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Well, I told the team, you know, we had a
- 8:03Speaker 3: quote last week. Life is ten percent what happens to
- 8:06Speaker 3: you in ninety percent how you react to it. And
- 8:08Speaker 3: obviously he had a really tough situation as freshman year
- 8:11Speaker 3: when his mom passed. And now the way he's reacted
- 8:14Speaker 3: to it is he's raising a lot of money for cancer.
- 8:17Speaker 3: And I wasn't there at the game, but how he was.
- 8:20Speaker 3: He told me he was banged out. They raised a
- 8:22Speaker 3: ton of money, and I think it's scalable to the
- 8:25Speaker 3: point where maybe they bring it to a Canucks game
- 8:27Speaker 3: at some point, and he's a kid that next year,
- 8:31Speaker 3: for sure, I'm going to put him up for the
- 8:32Speaker 3: Humanitarian Award. I think he's that type of leader.
- 8:35Speaker 2: All right.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Wellcome back with Coach cav a little later on Joey
- 8:38Speaker 1: Muldowney and net minor Callum Tung from interviews earlier today
- 8:42Speaker 1: on the Yukonacky Coaches Show live from Bear Smokehouse Barbecue
- 8:45Speaker 1: on Learfield, Stay with us,
