- 2:36a brief reminder, Henry J. Taylor, author, journalist and ABC commentator
- 2:42who's penetrating commentaries on world events has heard each Monday evening on ABC is on
- 2:46a fact finding tour of European countries. Periodically, mister Taylor takes trips abroad
- 2:52to get his own reaction to the feeling among the peoples of other nations about
- 2:55world conditions. On his current tript he plans to visit eight countries. Remember
- 3:01you listen a little later this evening to Henry J. Taylor, one of
- 3:06the nation's best informed mus authorities, podcasting from London on ABC The Man from
- 3:13Homicide. According to Webster's Dictionary, homicide is the killing of one human being
- 3:23by another. According to Lieutenant Lou Dana, it's the beginning of a dirty,
- 3:28dangerous job that doesn't end until the killer is found. I don't like
- 3:32killers. Every week at this time, the American Broadcasting Company brings you,
- 3:53transcribed the star of Stage and Screen, Dan Duryea as Lieutenant lou Dana,
- 3:58the man from Homicide. You can get used to the dead. It takes
- 4:15time, but you can do it. You can get used to the men
- 4:17have given up their lives suddenly to a knife, a piece of lead pipe,
- 4:23or a garner a broken bottom. In time, you can get used
- 4:28to all of that. But when the dead are very young, you look
- 4:32down the beam of a police flashlight to see the death pill and spreading over
- 4:36cheeks that still wear a youthful fuzzs. No, you never get used to
- 4:44that. They find them like this, Dave, Just like this, Lieutenant
- 4:50Bump came up to the alley looking for a place to flop. I guess
- 4:55saw him. There must have been right after the kid got it. Excuse
- 4:59me a minute of ten, right after the kid got it. Yes,
- 5:06the blood hadn't clotted yet, the large pool had made looked purple under my
- 5:13life. They bleed out fast when the throat is slashed. Picture boys,
- 5:18are he lietenant in a minute, Dave? Ye notice his arm right here?
- 5:27Look? Yeah, what would you give him seventeen seventeen eighteen. Settlers
- 5:36start him young these days makes for more business later on seventeen eighteen. Well
- 5:45he got the man off his back the hard way. Any anything on him,
- 5:50I see, I don't think so. No. Here's his wallet,
- 5:57though nobody cut his throat just for money. Do with it? A couple
- 6:02of bucks, no social security. Here's his draft card. Hold a light
- 6:09a minute. Donald M. Shellbarger twelve sixty four, Martin. Well,
- 6:18I guess I better go talk to his family. Nice job. Yeah,
- 6:25how did he stand in the draft? I didn't look Yeah, four f
- 6:39twelve sixty four. Martin was a tenement, no worse, no better than
- 6:44other tenements. It was after one in the morning when I got there,
- 6:48but you can usually find somebody up on a hot summer night. I found
- 6:53out that Don shell Barger lived on the third floor. Rare. No answer
- 6:59at the door, so I settle down to wait. I must have been
- 7:02tired. Hey, mm, somewhere else to sleep it off? Will your
- 7:08jack? Oh you live here, you can call it living. Let's go
- 7:15inside and I'll wait on me. Oh couple, what is it now?
- 7:20We better go inside? All right, We'll go inside. Where were you
- 7:30tonight, Mischelle Barger shell Barger? Please? I lost that years ago.
- 7:34Gloria Gay, you got a badge? Yeah? Here, Lieutenant Dana,
- 7:41all right, I was working. I'm a dancer. What kind of a
- 7:46dancer? Just the kind you think I am? And where were you dancing
- 7:51tonight? What's the charge? Let it go for? No? Let me
- 7:57see your arm, Gloria, Hey, you gotta thing for arms? Hmmm,
- 8:03nice smooth skin. You could have just asked me. I could have
- 8:07who is Donald Shellbarker, Gloria, miss Gay? And he's my brother?
- 8:13What's he done? Now? Live here with you? Off? And onya
- 8:16mother and father dead? I don't know. My father took a potto when
- 8:20down was four. My mother pulled out about three years later. I tried
- 8:24to take care of him. Since you did a great job, city paying
- 8:28you a salary to mind my business? How long has your brother been taking
- 8:33dope? Mis Gay? That's a lie. Sure you don't know how long?
- 8:39Or you don't want to say. I didn't know he hasn't been how
- 8:43much? Late, labor, I didn't know, all right, miss Gay?
- 8:52Your brother was murdered tonight? No, who might have told me?
- 9:00Right off? You might have told Lad, I'm sorry. I'm homicide detail,
- 9:05Miss Gay. My first responsibility is to catch murderers. Anything else has
- 9:11to come second. Eighteen eighteen. He was no any reason for anyone killing
- 9:16him. No, I guess even I didn't know him too well. I
- 9:22tried to raise him. But you know, no, you don't anybody else
- 9:30live in this apartment, Miss Gay. My husband off and on here to
- 9:33explain that there hasn't been anything between us for a long time. But I
- 9:37let him stay because he can't find another place. He's a You wouldn't understand
- 9:43that either. Got any idea where he is now? There's a bar over
- 9:48on Elm. It's just called Ed. Frank's kind of handy man there,
- 9:52Frank. Okay, anything else that's Don's picture, nothing else. I'll be
- 10:05in touch, sure, and I'm sorry. Just leave me, Will you
- 10:07just leave me? I left her standing alone in the tenement apartment with its
- 10:18water stained ceiling and peeling walls. This was the home from which Donald M.
- 10:26Shellbarger, aged eighteen, had tried to escape. Well, he finally
- 10:33made it. What catches most killers, not big thinking routine. On my
- 10:45way to Ed's place, I stopped in headquarters to see how the routine was
- 10:48sifting out. Got something on the shell Barger boiled tennis. Yeah, I
- 10:52been checking with Henderson Narcotics. They had a warner out for the kid as
- 10:56a peddler, been watching him to try to pin down sauce Dave. Where
- 11:01was Henderson tonight? He didn't say, lou Yeah, well there's the motive
- 11:09for us anyway, his supplier. I found out the kid was going to
- 11:11be picked up. He didn't want to be stooled on. Oh, he
- 11:15sure didn't. What's the record on the kid? Not much arrest shoplifting eight
- 11:20months ago, probation suspicion cough theft two months later in sufficient evidence and since
- 11:26there's nothing, not hard to figure is it took a lot of loot to
- 11:31buy his medicine, around twenty dollars a day. The kid made it by
- 11:37stealing for a while and then somebody showed him how he could get his for
- 11:41free. He got it all right. Yeah, he notified his family.
- 11:48Ho'd they take it? Now? He's got a sister, Well, I
- 11:52got a call to make it. A bar head's on elm. You know
- 11:56what, No anything other in law of the kids. From what I hear
- 12:01is nothing. Two thirty when I hit Ed's Place, a neighborhood bar,
- 12:13small and dirty. Two thirty am was after closing. But in bars like
- 12:20heads, it makes little difference. They just serve it under the counter and
- 12:24coffee cups and answer to my question. The bartender nodded me over to Frank.
- 12:30Frank shabby clothes, bloodshot eyes and racing for him. Frank, Yeah,
- 12:39sit down, anything good running tomorrow? Oh, tomorrow might be the
- 12:43day. It just might be the day. You know. I got a
- 12:46theory. You know, every day just one buck on a three horse poll,
- 12:50long shots, you see, see someday I got to hit big,
- 12:54don't I? Huh? I mean, don't I. Where were you tonight,
- 12:56Frank Well law, yeah, right here, captain, right here all
- 13:05evening or in the back room, you know, Ask mister McPherson, he
- 13:07runs this place, see, and he'll tell you. He'll say Frank,
- 13:11He'll say, Frank was here. That's where Frank was. Frank was here.
- 13:13McPherson's the owner. Yeah, huh, you married Frank. Nothing's happened
- 13:20to glory. No roll up your sleeve, Frank left sleep? Oh sure
- 13:26sure, captain? Sure there you want to take yours in a glass.
- 13:31So Frank beer so I can afford see. But look it now, it
- 13:35stands to reason I'm gonna hit it. Something I don't glow of averages.
- 13:39Just three horses. That sent much to ask for, is it? And
- 13:43look at look at what I got picked out for tomorrows. You're right here
- 13:45now look at Frank. Well the kid don did you ever look at his
- 13:52arm? Don? Oh? I know, no, Come on, you
- 13:56knew well. I got the word here and there, But I didn't say
- 14:01anything to glory because he'll come around. Donald'll snap out of it while he's
- 14:05Did you know how he got his money? No? No, no,
- 14:09I didn't, Captain law. Look, I swear I didn't talk. Frank,
- 14:11Please please look, I didn't. I tell you. If I know
- 14:15honest, I would look at Captain. He's almost like my own son.
- 14:20Oh. Sure, he's had a little troubled show, but he'll snap right
- 14:22out of it any day. Now, he'll come back. The kid got
- 14:28it tonight, Oh bad as bad as it can get. We found him
- 14:37in an alley with his throat cut. Oh, I need a drink.
- 14:43I need a drink. Frank stumbled his way over to the bar and I
- 14:52let him go. In the back of the room was a swinging door.
- 14:56I went through it, took a few steps down a narrow hallway that wreaked
- 15:01a stale beer, and turned the knob on a door lettered office empty,
- 15:09big surprise, but the odor of cigar smoke told me it hadn't been empty
- 15:16long. And in one wall was a peep hole surveying the bar. I
- 15:22looked out. Frank was back at his table, hunched over his racing for
- 15:26him, but he wasn't picking winners. He was crying. I took myself
- 15:37out of it's place, and Frank didn't look up as I got McPherson's address
- 15:41from the bartender after persuasion. It was a good address, and his name
- 15:48wasn't ed. It was Andy. He interested me. Just out out of
- 16:00the saloon, I got a break. Hey, hey, you, hey,
- 16:06my friend, needle Nose. You're not happy to see me. Take
- 16:11your hands off me, Dana, you got very heavy hands. I told
- 16:14you that before. Take them off you clean? Shoe shoe? Sure,
- 16:18I'm clean, Dana, you got nothing on me, you know it?
- 16:19Shut up? What were you doing in this neighborhood? Nose? Just passing
- 16:23by? I was just passing by, not that it's aning your business,
- 16:27Dana, what I do or where I I don't like you. I don't
- 16:33like your face. I don't like that needle nose of yours. And Dana,
- 16:37you got no right every time you see me the startight. Maybe if
- 16:40I keep it up long enough, you'll get out of town. I got
- 16:42friends on newspapers, Dana, they'd be glad to hear hands. You haven't
- 16:45even got acquaintances. What were you doing around here? Now? Listen,
- 16:51Dana, take your hands off me. I know my rights talk. You're
- 16:55one of the miserable rats who make recks of these kids. Where do you
- 17:00get your stuff? Nose? I got right sight? All right, all
- 17:03right, beat me up. Hit me. We're a big man, sure,
- 17:07hit me. See what good does you're going? Okay? There are
- 17:11other ways, Needle knows. Maybe you'll wish you had the slaps in the
- 17:15face. What was I got friends, Dana? Maybe you ain't so bigger
- 17:19like your thought? Maybe you Hey, what's the ten dollars for it alone?
- 17:26Maybe I'm sorry I hit you ten bucks? Well, thanks? I
- 17:33don't get it, then, knows? Don't you get the feeling that maybe
- 17:38somebody's watching us. I do, well, what's that got to do?
- 17:45How is it gonna look? Huh? I slap you around, we talk,
- 17:49I give you money, you took it. Gonna look like your stool,
- 17:53isn't it? But I didn't you know, I didn't not. I
- 17:56know, sure, But how does it look? You your shaken nose?
- 18:04Know what you better do? You better start running fast? Yeah? Yeah.
- 18:17I stepped back into the shadows of a warehouse doorway to let needlenose get
- 18:21a good start and see who might start trailing it. It wasn't a smart
- 18:26move. I stepped into the wrong shadow. Something was dripping water, blood
- 18:45my blood. I didn't care. I wasn't curious at all. I had
- 18:52the idea something had happened to my head, but I didn't feel anything.
- 18:56I didn't feel anything up there at all. My eyes open, and I
- 19:02was lying in an alley with the rusted out drain pipe leaking alongside of me.
- 19:07But it just seemed exactly the right place to be. I wasn't gonna
- 19:12move four o'clock. I wasn't interested. Four o'clock headquarters wasn't far and even
- 19:29though walking was pushing one leg in front of the other, that was good
- 19:33for me to walk. I could almost think. By the time I hit
- 19:37the station, ooh, what happened to you? Games? Dave, funny
- 19:45games year, no time, Dave, no time? Get out on all
- 19:49points a needle knowsractly. I want him found, and it's gotta be quick.
- 19:53Get it on the air, Dave and Dave found Lieutenant. It won't
- 19:59be had you got him. Yeah, on a slab in the morgue four
- 20:10twenty. Then I was just beginning to care about time again. Outside of
- 20:15Dave. I was the only other one in the romo did care. I
- 20:19think they put him in lower two. He's not pretty, Lieutenant, He
- 20:23wasn't pretty alive. Roll him out, Dave, right there, he is
- 20:36funny thing, Lieutenant. He had to die before we found out his real
- 20:41name was Henry Henry needle Knows Rackley. For the second time, and one
- 20:48night, I was looking down at a man with his throat cut. This
- 20:53time I could feel responsible. If it wasn't for me, needle Knows could
- 21:00have been still alive, alive and ruining the lives of eighteen year old kids.
- 21:07I looked down. I didn't feel sorry at all. Put him back.
- 21:14Dave almost five in the morning, I got around to the address I'd
- 21:26gotten from the barkeep at Ed's place, Andy McPherson. He was beginning to
- 21:33interest me more and more. Somehow I doubted that McPherson was a sound sleeper.
- 21:45One of my keys fit the lock, it usually does. I looked
- 21:52in all the rooms, found nothing, so I sat down. My head
- 21:59was coming around to the point where it was hurting pretty good, and the
- 22:03chair was too modern to be comfortable. McPherson had more money than taste than
- 22:11a key turned in the lock. Come in a social call, Miss Gay.
- 22:21I couldn't sleep. I had to talk to someone. You're a cop,
- 22:26yeah, and my apartment doesn't look like this at all. There's a
- 22:30little hole in the wall with only two keys. I've got both of them
- 22:36an early morning newscast. Why did you come here, miss Gay? My
- 22:42job is finding your brother's killer. You're either on one side or the other.
- 22:47You don't think much of me. We won't argue it. What's McPherson
- 22:51to you. I've been going with him. How'd he get his money?
- 22:55I never asked him. It's the same color as all other money. That's
- 22:59pretty dip. Look, miss Gay, I want you to go to the
- 23:04Windsor hotel. I'm elm register there in your own name right now. I
- 23:11want to use you as bait. Will you do it? It's for Dawn,
- 23:15Yes, all right, miss Gay. It's only fair to tell you
- 23:22that I tried this trick a few hours ago and got a man killed.
- 23:26Oh well, you couldn't be that lucky. Twice five thirty a few milk
- 23:40wagon drivers and street car jockeys were on their way to work, and a
- 23:44few late drunks were on their way home. But the second time, and
- 23:48one night, I headed for D's place and it was still open. They
- 23:52must have thrown away the keys to that place the day they opened it.
- 23:56A track sweeper was having a belt at the bar before starting work, and
- 24:00there in the corner was Frank Close, a little shabbier eyes, a little
- 24:06more bloodshot, and racing for him, a little more dog geared. Frank
- 24:15all along got those three horses picked out yet. I don't know. For
- 24:21the first time in my life, I got the feeling it Maybe today isn't
- 24:25today. I don't know, Frank about Gloria. What about Gloria? She
- 24:32took a hotel room, Frank, I think she found out something about Don's
- 24:36killer, and she's scared one to know where she is. Well, sure,
- 24:40I wanted maybe you better not tell me the Windsor Hotel. Windsor Hotel
- 24:48be seeing you, Frank, I just wanted to let you know. Thanks
- 24:52very much. Huh, thanks very much. I got out of Edge's place
- 25:02all right. My head was booming like a circus parade, but I was
- 25:06smart enough to stay out of the shadows. At the Windsor. The night
- 25:11clerk was asleep in his chair, the register in front of him. Gloria
- 25:15Gay was in two oh two, second floor. Huh. Anybody could have
- 25:21stolen the whole hotel, but who'd want it up the worn flight of stairs
- 25:26with the walls painted an institution brown, I knocked on two oh two.
- 25:33Who lou Dana. I never thought i'd be glad to see you coming,
- 25:44Jumpy said, I don't think we'll have long to wait. What did you
- 25:52tell Frank? You don't think, Frank, I don't think Frank can keep
- 25:56a secret very long. Did you have to do it that way? No,
- 26:03that's the best way I could think of. Do you chew them all
- 26:11the time? Yeah, I'm getting on your nerves. You got on my
- 26:15nerves the first minute I saw you. I've heard about you, mister Dana.
- 26:23You take chances. You don't wait for a killer to come out,
- 26:26You go in after him. What are you trying to prove all the time?
- 26:33I don't like killers? You married, mister Dana. No, No,
- 26:40you wouldn't be. You put on a little tin badge, the other
- 26:45type of resigns from the human race. You'll wear it when you go to
- 26:49bed, Dana. What is it you don't like? Dana yourself? I
- 26:57heard something. Get in the bathroom quick and stay there. If anything happens
- 27:03to me, go out the window. I'll beat it. Hi. Oh
- 27:19I, I guess I made a mistake. I guess you did. Come
- 27:25all the way in, McPherson. Let me get a good look at you.
- 27:29Who are you? You know who I am? Yeah, big guy,
- 27:36aren't you? What'd you bring with you? A knife or gun?
- 27:41Come on in and close the door. Sure, I'll close it. Thanks,
- 27:48been a busy evening for you, McPherson. No, he tells me
- 27:52a little different this time. I'm not needle noose, and I'm not an
- 27:56eighteen year old kid either. A lit so different? All right? Where
- 28:00is she you want to know here, I am take a body. Look,
- 28:07I killed your brother. But we can still be friends, can't we.
- 28:11I told you to stay out of this. You'd have been smarter to
- 28:12listen to the Copper. Gloria, and I brought along a gun this time.
- 28:17Dana, I hope you got good teeth. You're gonna have to eat
- 28:19it. Get back where you were, Gloria. Hold hold it. I'm
- 28:25just as good with a gun as a knife. Dana. How I freeze
- 28:27copper, Hold on to it, Hold on to it, and get your
- 28:37arm broke. You didn't hold on to it. Take care of Frank,
- 28:48Gloria. We get a doctor for you. You'll be all right. I
- 28:52didn't want to. I didn't want to tell him, Gloriable. He made
- 28:57me. Mhmm. It's all right, Frank, it's all right. He
- 29:03made me to glory. Yeprank, just this once, I didn't do so
- 29:12bad. Yeah, well you did great, Frank, you did Frank.
- 29:21Frank. Three and one evening. McPherson, you're a dandy fellow. I
- 29:30tak me in, but I'm not talking, not talking. I got a
- 29:33lawyer, a lawyer. McPherson at coursed the state about forty thousand dollars to
- 29:40electrocute you, and I'm just itching to save him that dough. Come on,
- 29:47you got a knife, make a move for it. Come on,
- 29:51let me alone, Daniel, Let me alone. Let him alone. Killed
- 29:55three people and now he wants to be let alone. Come on, mcphe
- 30:00you're a big fellow. One move just that one eyelash. Come on,
- 30:08let me alone. Take him in, Dana, he's all through. Yeah,
- 30:15I guess he is. I guess he is. I'll stay here with
- 30:21Frank. Six o'clock. Frank was right. Today wasn't his day? What
- 30:42does a cop think about after a case? All right? Now? I
- 30:48was thinking about how a girl named Gloria might have looked before she'd been pushed
- 30:52around so hard and so long by the years since her father and mother walked
- 30:56out on her. And then I tried to think what loud Dana was like
- 31:02as a kid so long ago. I couldn't remember. But I know what
- 31:10he is now, A cop who doesn't like killers. You have just heard
- 31:27another In a series starring Dan Durier as the Man from Homicide with Larry Dobkin
- 31:33as Dave, Mister Douria can be seen starring in Al Jennings of Oklahoma.
- 31:37In tonight's cast, you heard Gene Bates as Gloria, Bill bouchet is McPherson,
- 31:41and Joe Forte as Needle Knows. Music was by Basil Adlam. The
- 32:00Man from Homicide is transcribed and written by A. Louvitties, directed by dwighthauser.
- 32:05Be with us again next week, same time, over most of these
- 32:07same ABC stations to hear Dan Durier as The Man from Homicide, Lu Cook
- 32:12speaking, This program came to you from Hollywood. This is ABC, the
- 32:15American Broadcasting Company. Welcome back. I think we may have just found the
- 32:30hardest boiled detective of them all, and probably not the nasist. I can
- 32:36safely say he is just cold in some ways. I think the show was
- 32:40trying to trade on the success of a CBS series Broadways My beat. But
- 32:46he's a bit or, I should say, a lot tougher than Danny Clover.
- 32:53Shouldn't mention the star of the series is Dan Durier, and Duria is
- 32:59another one of those character actors. He was genuinely known for playing tops and
- 33:06heavies, real bad guys. In real life, he was, of course
- 33:13very different digital old LAFTP. He has his obituary posted from nineteen sixty eight,
- 33:22and the thing that he was really known for was he was the tope
- 33:30of guy who just love kids, all kids, so just very much the
- 33:36opposite of his on screen persona. With that, we turned to some listener
- 33:39comments and feedback. Catherine says, this donation is from two sisters, Katherine
- 33:47and Mary. Kathy lives in Oakland and Mary lives in Plymouth, California.
- 33:53We love your show and listen often. Thanks so much for keeping these shows
- 33:57available. Well, thanks so much for listening, marying Kathy. And then
- 34:05we do have a comment from Laura, And then we have a comment from
- 34:08Laura. I love the show. I listen every day, though I find
- 34:14dragging it a bit stressful to listen to, but I have all love all
- 34:17your shows. Have you considered a j Raffles stories. I've heard them before
- 34:22and they're pretty fun. Thanks and keep up the good work. Well,
- 34:27thanks so much, Laura. There were probably some Raffles stories done by BBC,
- 34:34and I know those that. There also were some done by the Jim
- 34:40French Productions in Seattle, both of which would be under copyright. There was
- 34:45there a couple of Raffles series for radio during the Golden Major radio, but
- 34:51in my opinion, the Raffles old time radio programs weren't really detective shows and
- 34:58were somewhat very quality, so I would not be presenting that by thanks for
- 35:02the question. Finally, we have a comment from Joan on the previous series
- 35:07we had here Crime and Peter Chambers in episode fifteen twenty eight Max Daily Suicide
- 35:15or Murder, Hi Adam. This being the last show in the current series,
- 35:19this show proved to be one of the to be the best one of
- 35:22them all. When Peter Chambers was at Clark Standish Place and while mister Standers
- 35:29is asking are you going to give it to me? I'm nodding my head.
- 35:32And then he asked the same question and again again and Powie gets it.
- 35:37Way to go, Peter. I'm smiling to myself as he gets it
- 35:40perfect. Thank you for bringing back the lineup in a few weeks. I
- 35:45so loved that show. Regards from Joan in Ontario, Canada. Well,
- 35:52thanks so much, Joan, and definitely enjoyed Crime and Peter Chambers. Now,
- 35:58of course, there were some limits on the mysteries and they were somewhat
- 36:01limited by the twist that you could get in there because the amount of time
- 36:07they had to tell their story compared to some of the previous shows, but
- 36:13within that time frame they managed to do a very good job with some compelling
- 36:17stories, and Dan Clark really did a superb job as a Peter Chambers.
- 36:23So I'm definitely very happy with the twenty one weeks that we had with this
- 36:30probably underrated series, so I'm glad everyone enjoyed it, and we do have
- 36:36the lineup coming in two weeks, So if lou Dana's not quite your cup
- 36:43of tea, Lieutenant Guthrie is waiting in the wings, well that will do
- 36:46it for today. We will be back tomorrow with the Adventures of Philip Marlow,
- 36:52and join us next Tuesday for one more episode with the Man from Homicide.
