Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Hope that you're having a good
- 0:17day. Today we are in Psalm 119 and we
- 0:20are looking at verses 121 through one, 28121 through 128,
- 0:28and these verses all start with the Hebrew letter ayin ayin.
- 0:33And in these verses I'm going to describe this as a holy
- 0:39discontentment. A holy discontentment.
- 0:42So often as we look at the Word of God, at our relationship with
- 0:47God, we expect things to happen instantaneously.
- 0:52We expect for good things to happen and we don't really know
- 0:58how to react or how we're supposed to react when things
- 1:04don't go according to plan, like when things go wrong, when stuff
- 1:08is taking too long. And I think this particular
- 1:12portion of Psalm 119, looking at the word of God can really help
- 1:16us to understand, number one, that God sees your emotions
- 1:22during times of waiting and dissatisfaction and he knows and
- 1:27he cares. And he actually gave us some of
- 1:30these words that we can pray to God.
- 1:33So if you are praying for something right now and God
- 1:36hasn't done it yet, He hasn't brought it to pass, you think
- 1:41that it's time for Him to act. Pray the words of this Psalm and
- 1:47find encouragement. Know that God knows exactly
- 1:50where you're at in this moment in time, and He's not judging
- 1:54you for some of that holy dissatisfaction.
- 1:57There's a truth that I heard a song in my high school years by
- 2:03Laura Story, the song called Blessings.
- 2:06Many of you are familiar with it.
- 2:08I'm certain that, you know, K Love played it to death.
- 2:10Maybe they still play it to death, I don't know.
- 2:13But the the song says, what if the aching of this life?
- 2:19What if my greatest disappointments and the aching
- 2:23of this life are the revealing of a greater thirst that this
- 2:27world can't satisfy? Or I think there's an old CS
- 2:30Lewis quote that says if we have a longing that nothing in this
- 2:36world can satisfy, then it's an indication that I was not made
- 2:41for this world. A part of what we so need as
- 2:45humans is to be able to experience the fullness of God
- 2:50that we can't right now because of our sin.
- 2:53Cursed world. Christ has not yet returned.
- 2:56When He returns, we will find eternal growth and learning and
- 3:02satisfaction in getting to know Him more and more and more
- 3:07throughout the eternal ages. And because He is eternal and
- 3:13endless and perfect in every way, even the more that we learn
- 3:17about him, we will never learn everything there is to know
- 3:21about God because there's always more and more to learn about
- 3:25Him. And I love just that thought
- 3:28that that meditation. What that has to do with this
- 3:31passage is when we experience dissatisfaction, it's because
- 3:36there is a portion of God that we know is there that we want to
- 3:42experience. We want to experience God's
- 3:46nature and his character and his presence and his will being
- 3:50accomplished. And so even our dissatisfaction
- 3:53with the with the status quo is not inherently sinful.
- 3:58It's not inherently a problem. You are expecting the fullness
- 4:03of God and throughout all eternity, you will get to
- 4:07experience and learn that more and more and more.
- 4:10So let's read through these verses and you'll probably get
- 4:13a, a better handle on on some of what I'm saying.
- 4:17Verse 121 I have done what is just and right.
- 4:21Do not leave me to my oppressors.
- 4:24Guarantee Your servant's well-being.
- 4:27Don't let the arrogant oppress me.
- 4:30My eyes grow weary, looking for Your salvation and for Your
- 4:34righteous promise. Deal with Your servant based on
- 4:38Your faithful love. Teach me your statutes.
- 4:41I am your servant. Give me understanding so that I
- 4:45may know Your decrees. It is time for Yahweh to act,
- 4:49for they violated Your instruction.
- 4:52Since I love Your commands more than gold, even the purest gold,
- 4:56I carefully follow all your precepts and hate every false
- 5:01way. Let's begin in verse 121 and see
- 5:05about a holy dissatisfaction with the status quo and how we
- 5:10can pray to God as a result. Says I have done what is just
- 5:14and right. Do not leave me to my oppressors
- 5:18here. There are people that do not
- 5:20care if you walk with God. They don't care if you are doing
- 5:22what the Lord has asked you to do.
- 5:25They either want to take what you have.
- 5:28They want to judge you for following the Lord, that they
- 5:31think there's a better way to live.
- 5:34And here the psalmist says, God, I have done what is Justin
- 5:38right? What should be happening to me
- 5:41is like reward or gratitude or relationship or fellowship.
- 5:45That's what I should be experiencing, but instead I'm
- 5:49experiencing people oppressing me and many of us have gone
- 5:53through circumstances like that. Can I encourage you?
- 5:57When you have done what is just and what is right, you can take
- 6:00it to the bank that God will reward you.
- 6:03We read in Hebrews Chapter 11 and verse number six.
- 6:06Those that come to God must believe that He exists and that
- 6:12He rewards those who diligently seek Him.
- 6:16So as you are doing what is right, as you are pursuing the
- 6:18Lord and His way and His method of interacting, know that God
- 6:24will reward you for that one day.
- 6:27And you can pray that God would begin giving you those rewards.
- 6:30I'm thankful that in my life, I, I haven't just had to wait for
- 6:34great someday for God to come through on his word.
- 6:38I'm thankful that I'll, I'll say right now within my marriage for
- 6:43times when I was rude or when I was proud or when I didn't
- 6:48listen. And I turned from some of those
- 6:52things into I want to be humble with my wife.
- 6:56I want to be kind. I want to try and work
- 7:00diligently to give her what she's deserving of, not just in
- 7:06like the workplace, but within our our home that it would be a
- 7:11good environment. Even, you know, sometimes quote
- 7:15UN quote, silly stuff like helping the kids clean their
- 7:18room can make my wife's evening much better.
- 7:23And so as I have followed what God has said about how to treat
- 7:27my wife, man, I am so thankful for my relationship with
- 7:31Samantha that I I get to every single day experience the reward
- 7:36of a loving, kind, respectful relationship that we have with
- 7:41one another. It's a blast.
- 7:44Like I love spending time with her and I'm thankful that God
- 7:47has given me a reward. He's given me goodness as a
- 7:53result of I followed His way and good came.
- 7:56Now, not in every area of my life where I've done right have
- 8:00I yet experienced the rewards for all the stuff.
- 8:04There are times when I've treated people in a way that
- 8:08that God's word has said and they have treated like the world
- 8:12would treat or they would treat in the way that that Satan would
- 8:15want them to retaliate. But in those moments where we
- 8:19go, God, I know that in this situation I have done what is
- 8:22right. I am not always going to
- 8:25immediately receive the reward. I recognize God will eventually
- 8:29reward me either here or hereafter.
- 8:32But God, would you reward me? Would you not leave me to the
- 8:36oppressors instead? Would you respond to me?
- 8:40Would you bring me with you that I leave the oppressors behind if
- 8:44you will? Verse 122 guarantee your
- 8:47servants well-being. Do not let the arrogant oppress
- 8:50me. He says, God, I have like
- 8:52humility in how I am interacting.
- 8:56And so God, as I am humble before you, I am wanting you to
- 9:00look after me. Don't let the proud people,
- 9:03don't let them destroy me. And this is a prayer that we can
- 9:07pray to God when we are experiencing oppression.
- 9:09God, would you help my well-being?
- 9:12I kind of want to look at what this word is in Hebrew.
- 9:16Oh, this is taupe. It is what is good.
- 9:19So the the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
- 9:22He says guarantee your servants good that I have what is right
- 9:28within this life and you can ask you can ask the Lord this.
- 9:32Did you know that you can say God?
- 9:34I really right now with my coworkers, there is a lot of
- 9:40hatred and animosity that is happening.
- 9:42God, I just want a good workplace.
- 9:44Would you help me? And God may or may not follow
- 9:49through on that eventually. Your good is absolutely
- 9:53guaranteed. It's guaranteed by what Jesus
- 9:55did for us on the cross and in his resurrection.
- 9:58But you can pray for your well-being that it would be told
- 10:02that it would be good with you and that the arrogant would not.
- 10:06The proud would not win. Verse 123 my eyes grow weary
- 10:10looking for your salvation and for your righteous promise.
- 10:14You can say, God, I'm just tired right now.
- 10:17I'm exhausted. I, I don't know if I can keep my
- 10:20eyes on the horizon looking for the, the hope, the the good day
- 10:26that you have promised. And can I tell you when you pray
- 10:30that God knows and He cares and He doesn't, if you will, He
- 10:33doesn't look down on you for saying, God, I'm exhausted.
- 10:38As you pray that to God, as you pray God, I'm at the end of my
- 10:42rope. God is near to the broken
- 10:45hearted. He loves those who are cast down
- 10:48and he rejoices in being able to lift those people up and being
- 10:53able to stand by them when no one else does and being able to
- 10:56provide for their needs in ways that no one could have ever seen
- 11:00coming. So I want to encourage you pray
- 11:03to the Lord even when you are tired and done.
- 11:07God will hear and he will answer verse 124 deal with your servant
- 11:12based on your faithful love. Teach me your statutes.
- 11:16He says, God, I need you to treat me like you made a
- 11:21relationship, a covenant with me here, faithful love.
- 11:24It's I said it's God's loyal, steadfast covenant, faithful
- 11:28love. And so he says, God treat me
- 11:31like you, you signed that marriage contract.
- 11:34And so we, we are in a covenant together.
- 11:38Treat me that way. If it's just me, I'm thinking,
- 11:43man, that that seems like a kind of disrespectful way to talk to
- 11:46God like God, act like you love me, act like you signed the
- 11:49covenant. But I love that God put this
- 11:51here in his word in Psalm 119, and this is a prayer that I can
- 11:55pray just with raw human emotion of despair and grief and sorrow
- 12:01and hurt. I can say, God, treat me like
- 12:04you saved me. Treat me like you have adopted
- 12:07me as your child and God will hear and care about that.
- 12:12He is not going to strike you with lightning as you pray raw
- 12:16and from the heart to your father.
- 12:19Verse 125 I am your servant. Give me understanding so that I
- 12:25may know your decrees. He says God I work for you.
- 12:30Help me to understand what I'm supposed to be doing when you
- 12:33just feel lost in your life. I can think back to when I was
- 12:39searching for a church. We knew we wanted to be around
- 12:44family. My family didn't really know
- 12:46where they were going to be living and we had initially
- 12:52looked at a church in Colorado and Colorado's where I grew up.
- 12:57I love Colorado, I love the scenery, I love the environment.
- 13:03There's just I, I love everything about Colorado.
- 13:07And we had, we'd gone through an interview process at a church
- 13:13and it just became clear through our time there that it was not
- 13:17what the Lord would have for us. And they actually invited me to
- 13:21come out and to candidate where where we'd be voted on by the
- 13:26congregation. But I just knew this is not what
- 13:30God has for me. And after that, I didn't know
- 13:34what the next step was. I didn't know if God just wanted
- 13:36us to stick around where we were at in Washington.
- 13:40I didn't know if you wanted me to do something else.
- 13:42And and so I can remember asking God to guide me.
- 13:47Like God, I want to do whatever you have for me.
- 13:49But would you show me what I'm supposed to be doing?
- 13:53And when we pray that God can line out the way and God did it
- 13:58in the perfect time to where I reached out to Tabernacle at a
- 14:01time when they would actually, you know, consider my my resume,
- 14:09my application when they would consider me as a person.
- 14:12We actually happen to be out here in Maryland celebrating my
- 14:17in laws anniversary and my mother in law's birthday and my
- 14:21mother in And as you serve the Lord, He
- 14:43will give you understanding so that you can know what you are
- 14:46supposed to do in your life. And so I want to encourage you
- 14:49be praying for the Lord to show you the next steps, but have a
- 14:53commitment. Whatever he talks to you about,
- 14:54whatever direction he wants you to go, that you're going to do
- 14:57it. He's not always going to tell
- 14:59you to just do what your heart wants to do.
- 15:02He's going to guide you in the way that is best.
- 15:05Verse 126, it is time for Yahweh to act for they have violated
- 15:10your instruction. Can you imagine telling God, Hey
- 15:15God, you need to get up and do something?
- 15:20I think about Mary and Martha. Mary's sitting there at the feet
- 15:24of Jesus. Martha is super just down laden
- 15:31with a whole bunch of serving. I think the King James has it.
- 15:34She's cumbered about with much serving.
- 15:37She, she's just doing and doing and doing and, and cooking for
- 15:40Christ in the apostles and Jesus and she tells Jesus, Jesus tell
- 15:45Mary to help me because I'm doing all of this work.
- 15:48And Jesus tells Martha lovingly, caringly, there is one important
- 15:53thing. You you're worried about a lot
- 15:56of stuff, but there's one important thing and Mary has
- 16:00chosen that one important thing and it's not going to be taken
- 16:03away from her. Sometimes we think that God
- 16:09needs to act. We think he needs to judge.
- 16:11We think he needs to punish. And the truth is we need to
- 16:15change in those moments where maybe like Martha and we're
- 16:18like, God, I need you to act. I need you to do this on my
- 16:22timetable. And God says, no, actually, I
- 16:26need you to rethink the situation now.
- 16:30It very well could be that it is God's time to act.
- 16:32And as you pray God, would you act?
- 16:34Would you punish? Would you do this or that?
- 16:37God will come through. I can tell you, I think I've
- 16:41mentioned this before on the podcast.
- 16:42There have been a couple of times even as a pastor where
- 16:47someone did something, said something that they definitely
- 16:51like should not have done it. It was it was harmful.
- 16:56It was hurtful and very, very closely after normally within
- 17:03day, couple days, sometimes couple weeks, something happens
- 17:08to them that's like big, it's crazy.
- 17:11It's very out of the ordinary. But every time that it happens
- 17:15and I I've I've had the Holy Spirit both go like, Hey, make
- 17:20sure like you're loving and caring for this person, like
- 17:22they're going through hardships. People aren't your enemy.
- 17:24Satan is your enemy. But then there's also been a
- 17:27like, hey, I'm watching out for you.
- 17:29I'm caring for you. And so I've begun kind of
- 17:33leaning into it a little bit just to go like, hey, Lord, you
- 17:36see the circumstance, you hear what's going on?
- 17:39Would you do just or would you do justice?
- 17:43Would you act justly in this situation?
- 17:46Would you take care of this? I'm not going to be the one to
- 17:49like harm someone else, but God, I'm hurting right now and I want
- 17:56there to be like reconciliation. I want there to be just an
- 18:00understanding of, hey, this was wrong.
- 18:02This was not right. God, would you deal with this?
- 18:05And I've seen him do it several times.
- 18:08It always freaks me out too, because I'm like, Oh my word,
- 18:10well, I know this wasn't me, like this was God, but God, it,
- 18:14it blows my mind how you act and how you operate.
- 18:18So you can certainly pray for the Lord to act, but pray again
- 18:21according to the Lord's will, not your own will, and then
- 18:24always be looking even in God's justice.
- 18:28Let that move you towards compassion and love and care for
- 18:31others. Don't let it move you towards
- 18:34like a superiority mindset of Oh yeah, they got theirs.
- 18:38No care for those that have experienced hardship, whether
- 18:44from the hand of God directly from the hand of God or not.
- 18:48Care about them and love them and care for them.
- 18:50Verse 127 Since I love your commands more than gold, even
- 18:53the purest gold, I carefully follow all your precepts and
- 18:57hate every false way you can tell God, God, I am pursuing
- 19:03you. I, I love you.
- 19:05I want to follow you. It doesn't matter what other
- 19:07people want. It doesn't matter if I can make
- 19:09more money if I was just doing things kind of the world's way
- 19:12instead of God's way, or I could keep more money in my pocket if
- 19:16I, you know, wasn't giving to the Lord's work or wasn't being
- 19:19generous to the poor or something like that.
- 19:24You, you can tell God, God don't.
- 19:26Don't you see the way that I am loving and pursuing you and God
- 19:31knows and He cares and He will not allow your love for Him and
- 19:37your service towards Him and your care for other people and
- 19:41your love. He will not allow that to go
- 19:43unrewarded. I mentioned in a sermon several
- 19:47weeks ago now where Jesus mentions to His disciples there
- 19:51is no one that has given up. His family is his mother or
- 19:55father or lands or friends who will not receive 3060 or 100
- 20:02times that amount. And certainly we know that's not
- 20:07that's very rarely true in the here and now, but certainly we
- 20:11can believe in the promise of that new heaven and new earth
- 20:15that is Jesus creates that there is eternal reward and blessing
- 20:18for those that choose to center their life around the Son of
- 20:22God. Well, this I got to tell you
- 20:25guys, this portion of Scripture is just it's really rich.
- 20:29I I hope that as I talked through, even as you read
- 20:33through these verses, that the tone and the mindset of this
- 20:40portion of someone 19 came across in, in how I in how I
- 20:45talked. I do want to say I would always
- 20:48love to hear from you on if the podcast is a blessing to you.
- 20:55If you're, if you're watching it, if you're listening to it, I
- 20:58would love to hear from you. Number one, it, it helps me to
- 21:02know like, hey, is this beneficial or am I, you know,
- 21:06kind of wasting my time, you know, recording it.
- 21:11Certainly anytime spending the word is a good and worthwhile
- 21:14thing. But for, for some of the effort
- 21:17that's putting in, it's always great to be able to hear from
- 21:19people who are listening to the podcast.
- 21:21I got to talk with a couple of people this past Saturday at
- 21:24time of recording that they were listening to it.
- 21:27It's huge encouragement to me. It also helps me to know even as
- 21:32I'm talking through different applications and things from the
- 21:36passages to know, all right, what what circumstances are
- 21:39people in and is this helpful to them?
- 21:43Obviously the word of God speaks to all areas of life as someone
- 21:47that's currently, you know, in the workplace and in church.
- 21:50I'm married and I have kids. A lot of my, you know, kind of
- 21:54illustrations are applications that come to mind, kind of
- 21:58filter through some of that. But I certainly love hearing
- 22:01whatever background that you are from and want to make sure that
- 22:05this podcast is a blessing and an encouragement to you.
- 22:08And then certainly it helps encourage me.
- 22:13This might sound a little silly, but I mean it very earnestly.
- 22:17Satan's always looking to discourage and dishearten.
- 22:20And anytime that I'm able to hear like, hey, this was an
- 22:25encouragement. This was a blessing.
- 22:27Man, that makes me feel like I can stomp on the devil a few
- 22:30more times and I can keep on going for the glory of Christ.
- 22:33And so I so appreciate all of the encouragement and love from
- 22:38those that have been listening. I feel like maybe a few weeks
- 22:42ago I looked and we've had over 6000 listens to Tabernacle talk
- 22:49and I'm just blown away by that. And my prayer would be Lord be
- 22:53glorified in what I say and what I do.
- 22:56I have actually, I'm going to grab this Bible right over here.
- 23:01I grabbed Bible last year at some point that right here on
- 23:09the cover, pardon me, right here on the cover says let the words
- 23:14of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in
- 23:17your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.
- 23:21And that's my prayer for Tabernacle talk is that as I
- 23:24talk through these things, as I pray over it, as I tell you guys
- 23:29what cuts word says that it would be acceptable in the sight
- 23:33of the Lord and ultimately I want to do everything that I do
- 23:35for him. Thanks for tuning in.
- 23:37Hope you have a wonderful day.
