Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Randy Manner: Former US Army General on Trump rejecting Iran's latest proposal to open the Strait of Hormuz
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Trump says no thanks to an Iranian plan to reopen
- 0:02Speaker 1: the Strait of Hormuz and get the oil back on
- 0:04Speaker 1: the water.
- 0:06Speaker 2: I'm rejecting their deal.
- 0:07Speaker 1: They want to make a deal where they open the
- 0:08Speaker 1: strait immediately because they're losing so badly. You know, you
- 0:11Speaker 1: don't read that or you don't see that in the
- 0:14Speaker 1: fake news. But we're winning tremendously. We have total control
- 0:18Speaker 1: of the Harmo Strait. Yeah, OK, OK. He reckons the
- 0:22Speaker 1: deal's simply not needed.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Massive amounts of oil.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Are coming out of the Harmo Strait. Last night we
- 0:28Speaker 1: had 29 ships come out.
- 0:31Speaker 2: They want to make a deal, and I think that's fine.
- 0:33Speaker 3: I like making a deal, too. But that deal would
- 0:37Speaker 3: not be acceptable.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Randy Manor is retired Major General of the U.S. Army,
- 0:41Speaker 1: served as Deputy Commanding General of all U.S. Army forces
- 0:44Speaker 1: in the Middle East, joins us live this morning. Randy,
- 0:46Speaker 1: nice to have you back on the show.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Thank you for having me.
- 0:49Speaker 1: So is this because it would give the Iranians too
- 0:53Speaker 1: much control of the Strait? Is that the reason he
- 0:55Speaker 1: said no?
- 0:57Speaker 2: So the devil is always in the details.
- 0:59Speaker 3: I think it's very unfortunate that the president verbally rejected
- 1:02Speaker 3: it outright without saying hey, there's an opportunity to get
- 1:06Speaker 3: together and to figure out what right looks like. Unfortunately,
- 1:09Speaker 3: he is mixing total propaganda that we control the strait
- 1:13Speaker 3: and everything is flowing and we're winning and all that.
- 1:16Speaker 3: That is pure propaganda for his base. The reality is,
- 1:20Speaker 3: as we all know, the oil prices are high, the
- 1:22Speaker 3: strait is not open, and there are a very limited
- 1:25Speaker 3: number of tankers moving through at this time.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and to fact check that, you only have to
- 1:29Speaker 1: listen to him. Why would he even be needing to
- 1:31Speaker 1: entertain a deal on the Strait of Hormuz if the
- 1:33Speaker 1: Strait of Hormuz was already open?
- 1:36Speaker 2: Exactly. That's exactly the point. He's telling a lie while
- 1:39Speaker 2: telling a lie.
- 1:40Speaker 3: And it's very sad for the people around the world
- 1:43Speaker 3: who are paying so much more for gasoline and oil
- 1:46Speaker 3: prices and food prices. So the bottom line up front
- 1:48Speaker 3: is this truly only can be done through negotiation. And
- 1:53Speaker 3: that is very difficult and it takes a lot of time.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Our president does not have that kind of patience, unfortunately.
- 2:01Speaker 2: He's tried to do all-out war. It did not work.
- 2:05Speaker 3: And in fact, as we know, the Iranians are far
- 2:07Speaker 3: more powerful now because they are able to influence the
- 2:10Speaker 3: world oil price at any time they choose. That's far
- 2:14Speaker 3: more important and usable than developing a nuclear weapon, which,
- 2:17Speaker 3: of course, they weren't and they don't have the capability
- 2:19Speaker 3: to do so.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Randy, clock's ticking on the midterms, isn't it?
- 2:23Speaker 2: Oh, yes.
- 2:24Speaker 3: That is, it's a very, very difficult time here in
- 2:26Speaker 3: the United States. We have governors that are saber rattling
- 2:29Speaker 3: about safeguarding the election. We have the president himself saying
- 2:34Speaker 3: that he doesn't trust certain areas to do the right thing.
- 2:36Speaker 3: He's already verbally said over the past six months, I
- 2:40Speaker 3: should have seized ballot boxes when I had the chance.
- 2:43Speaker 3: He is actually telling the Department of Justice to be
- 2:47Speaker 3: prepared in these handful of areas that are contested. Meaning
- 2:51Speaker 3: when I say contested, they are too close to call.
- 2:54Speaker 3: And so, quite frankly, we have at least two-thirds of
- 2:58Speaker 3: America that is absolutely on edge about what this president
- 3:01Speaker 3: may do to seize power this fall.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Good to have you on the show, Randy. Randy Mann,
- 3:07Speaker 1: a retired Major General, U.S.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Army.
