- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. Luna: Hey Lucas, excited to be here! What are we learning today? Lucas: Today we're going to the doctor — but not for an appointment, just for some useful phrases. Luna: Oh, that's a good one. I always worry about explaining pain in German. Lucas: Exactly. So let's start with a common one: Ich habe Kopfschmerzen. Luna: Ich habe Kopfschmerzen. Lucas: Perfect! That means 'I have a headache.' Kopfschmerzen — head pain. Luna: Kopfschmerzen. I can already use that after a long day. Lucas: And if you have back pain, you say: Mir tut der Rücken weh. Luna: Mir tut der Rücken weh. Lucas: Great. 'My back hurts.' Rücken is back, weh tun means to hurt. Luna: So 'Mir tut der Rücken weh' — that's a full sentence. Lucas: Yep. And the doctor will ask: Wo tut es weh? Luna: Wo tut es weh? — Where does it hurt? Lucas: Right. So you can point and say: Hier tut es weh. Luna: Hier tut es weh. Simple. Lucas: Now the doctor might ask: Seit wann haben Sie Schmerzen? Luna: Seit wann haben Sie Schmerzen? — Since when do you have pain? Lucas: Exactly. And you can answer: Seit gestern. Luna: Seit gestern — since yesterday. Lucas: Let's practice those again. Repeat after me: Ich habe Kopfschmerzen. Luna: Ich habe Kopfschmerzen. Lucas: Mir tut der Rücken weh. Luna: Mir tut der Rücken weh. Lucas: Wo tut es weh? Luna: Wo tut es weh? Lucas: Hier tut es weh. Luna: Hier tut es weh. Lucas: Seit wann haben Sie Schmerzen? Luna: Seit wann haben Sie Schmerzen? Lucas: Seit gestern. Luna: Seit gestern. Doctor says: Wo tut es weh? Lucas: And you say: Hier tut es weh. — pointing at your head. Luna: Hier tut es weh. Lucas: Then the doctor asks: Seit wann haben Sie Schmerzen? Luna: Seit gestern. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's mix it up. What if your back hurts? Luna: Mir tut der Rücken weh. Lucas: Exactly. And if the doctor asks where, you say: Hier, am Rücken. Luna: Hier, am Rücken. Nice. Lucas: Let's do one more round. I'll say the English, you try the German. Luna: Okay, hit me. Lucas: I have a headache. Luna: Ich habe Kopfschmerzen. Lucas: My back hurts. Luna: Mir tut der Rücken weh. Lucas: Where does it hurt? Luna: Wo tut es weh? Lucas: It hurts here. Luna: Hier tut es weh. Lucas: Since when do you have pain? Luna: Seit wann haben Sie Schmerzen? Lucas: Since yesterday. Luna: Seit gestern. Lucas: Excellent, Luna! You're ready for the doctor. Luna: I feel much more confident now. Lucas: That's all for today.
