- 0:07The California Angels faced the Washington Senators at RFK Stadium for a Wednesday night game on June 2nd, 1971.
- 0:14California was an average team, which was a common occurrence in each of their 11 years as a franchise.
- 0:20They were coached by Lefty Phillips in what would be his final season with the Angels.
- 0:25This was the second version of the Washington Senators, having expanded as a new team in 1961,
- 0:30after the original Senators moved to become the Minnesota Twins the year before.
- 0:35The Senators were coached by Hall of Famer Ted Williams, but the team was a train wreck with very little young talent,
- 0:41lots of old stars, and washed-up free agents like Frank Howard, Danny McLean, and Kurt Flood.
- 0:48They had perennially lost 90 or 100 games before giving Ted Williams a shot as a manager.
- 0:53He turned the team into a winning program in 1969, but his managing style didn't fit well with the players,
- 0:59and they quickly fell back to their losing ways.
- 1:02This audio recording is from the California Radio broadcast featuring announcers Dick Umberg and Don Wells.
- 1:09The Angels batting order reads this way. Roger, a pose will be in center field.
- 1:24Alex Johnson in left field batting second. Jim Fregosi at short.
- 1:29Jim Spencer will be at first base. Spencer at first batting fourth. Ken McMullen at third.
- 1:34Tony Canigliaro in right field. Tony C. in right batting sixth. John Stephenson will do the catching.
- 1:39Stephenson behind the plate. Mandy Alomar at second. And the pitcher, Clyde Wright.
- 1:43And quickly for the Senators, Danny McLean has already worked his few warm-up tosses.
- 1:47Toby Harrell will be at short. Elliot Maddox in center.
- 1:50Frank Howard at first base. Dick Billings in left field batting fourth.
- 1:54Larry Bittner will be in right field. Paul Casanova will do the catching in bat six.
- 1:58Don Wirt will be at third base. Tim Cullen at second base.
- 2:01Tell them at second batting eighth. And the pitcher, Danny McLean.
- 2:04Toby Angels and the Senators complete it all here at the same thing. And right now, here's Dick.
- 2:09Thank you, Don. Good evening, everybody. The first pitcher of the game is fouled back on the screen by repos.
- 2:13Strike one. Danny McLean. Certainly the headline maker during the winter when he was traded here at World Series time.
- 2:21And that startling deal that involved the entire left side of the Washington and Field Rodriguez and Brinkman going to Detroit.
- 2:27This one is hung on a pop fly back of short. Out goes Harrah. In comes the left fielder Billings.
- 2:32He wants it and Billings has got it for the first half.
- 2:37Repos started tonight with a 250 average. Here's Alex Johnson batting 258.
- 2:46Alex has a modest seven game hitting streak. He'll be followed by Jim Fregosi.
- 2:51McLean four and eight with a 4.05 ERA. 13 and eight lifetime against the Angels. First pitch is a strike.
- 2:58Fastball inside corner. Danny with that characteristic high kick.
- 3:04Broad shouldered stocky right hander. Wines one strike delivery. High. Fastball one and one.
- 3:12As the lights have not taken their full effect, McLean may choose to stick more with his fastball early.
- 3:19He rocks into motion the one one pitch. Outside with a breaking ball. First one he's thrown. Two and one.
- 3:32McAntra-Castanova, Wurthara, Cullen-Howard on the infield. Billings, Maddox and Biffner in the outfield. The pitch low. Three and one.
- 3:46McLean pauses a moment as Johnson backs out. Now with their set. Three one pitch. Swung on.
- 3:53Sliced fly ball back of first. Howard with a long run in foul territory. Can't get there. It's back a couple of rows.
- 4:00Down in the right field corner. Three and two to Alex Johnson.
- 4:14Star for the Senators last night. Elliott Maddox with a game winning three run home run out in center field.
- 4:19He had some interesting comments after the game last night. He roamed with Alex's brother Ron Johnson at the University of Michigan.
- 4:26The pitch slider outside ball four. Johnson walks and with one out here shortstop Jim Fragosi.
- 4:35Frank Howard will hold on Alex Johnson. Fred Kinnig reminds AJ one away. Rocky Bridges threw a series of signs down a third.
- 4:47And Jim Spencer on deck. Fragosi hitting two twenty-six. Throw to first and Johnson is back.
- 4:55Just seems as if the whole infield is leaning towards Frank Howard when he's positioned there. The pitch. Swung on and sliced back foul.
- 5:02Deep into the lower deck to the right.
- 5:09McLean with the two big years back to back in sixty-eight and sixty-nine in the Tigers pennant winning season.
- 5:15Sixty-eight he was thirty-one and six and the next year twenty-four and nine.
- 5:20And then last year with all his troubles three and five. The pitch. Swung on. Pop fly behind.
- 5:25Home plate. Casanova whips the mask away. He's under it and on the warning track makes the catch.
- 5:32Fragosi fouls out to the catcher two away. Johnson at first base and here's first baseman Jim Spencer.
- 5:40It's interesting to hear on his own pregame show a five minute broadcast before the Washington ballgames tonight.
- 5:47And he was asked about the Angel Bowl Club and how he analyzed their situation.
- 5:52And he talked of hitting balance having right and left handed power in the lineup.
- 5:58So by McLean out of time to scare Johnson at all.
- 6:01And he said when you have all right handed hitters as was the case when the season began with the Angels except for Jim Spencer.
- 6:07Then you have to figure Spencer's going to hit big. The pitch. Outside and low of the fastball.
- 6:11And when he has trouble getting his hits then that really causes trouble.
- 6:14Then as has been the case, Leslie Phillips has had to go to a more platoon system getting left handed hitters like Stevenson and repose in the lineup.
- 6:22The Angels hope that Spencer with his good swing and Williams comment is upon just that that he feels that Spencer is one of the bright young hitters in this league will get going.
- 6:31Swung on. A drive to right field. It's hit well down in the corner.
- 6:34Right fielder Bittner deep in the corner and he makes the catch as he crosses into foul territory.
- 6:39The ball died down in front of the three thirty five time Spencer fouls deep to right.
- 6:45The Angels leave a man in a hit list first inning and after a half Angels nothing Washington coming to bat.
- 7:13When you say. It means you want to be.
- 7:43When you say. You said it.
- 7:56Wide right trying to get above the 500 level personally. He's won for and lost for his DRA sparkling two point nine five.
- 8:19Shortstop Toby Herra and the number one spot in the batting order tonight he has a seven game hitting streak he's batting two forty two.
- 8:33There are just twenty two years old.
- 8:36He and Larry Bittner have been very impressive the two youngsters in the Washington lineup in this area.
- 8:43Right into the wind up his first pitch.
- 8:45Fastball outside ball one.
- 8:49Aramatic and Howard Williams juggles his lineup to get a lot of right handed batters in against Clyde Wright.
- 8:57Angel Southfall winds kicks. Here it comes.
- 9:00And away ball to.
- 9:05The flag atop the double deck stadium.
- 9:09Here in Washington is blowing in a bit.
- 9:14Clyde Wines the two all pitch taken all away ball three.
- 9:19Here up bluffing a bunch to try to disturb the concentration of Clyde Wright and he falls behind the leadoff man three and all.
- 9:30Right into the wind up left hander delivers all the way taken for a strike.
- 9:36Fastball aimed down the middle three and one to her. So bothers not to look at third base coach Wayne to Williger. So apparently he's taking three and one as well.
- 9:44Nellie Fox coaching at first for the net.
- 9:47Three one pitch. Oh he was swinging and he fouled it away.
- 9:50That'll be over the Senator dugout on the first base side.
- 9:55Three and two to Toby Herra.
- 10:05Yesterday it was clear and low humidity today.
- 10:10Hazy overcast and it's most typical Washington hogger's high humidity heat.
- 10:17Good pitching weather. The three two pitch outside with a fastball and here a walk.
- 10:25Leadoff man on for the senators. Here's Elliott Maddux who hit his first home run as a senator last night and it came with two men on base against Dave LaRoche and proved to be an insurmountable lead for the senators at the time as it gave them a six to advantage.
- 10:40The angels got three runs in the eighth and had the tying run at third and only one out in the ninth but could not force the senators to come to bat in the bottom of the ninth.
- 10:49Here with a good lead. Right staring Adam Dolbers. Fastball for a strike. Outside corner.
- 10:58In field looking for a double play chance. Maddux along with Don Wirt came to the senators with Denny McLean in that trade with Detroit.
- 11:10Throw the first base and it's not close enough for a tank by Spencer.
- 11:20Norm McRae a pitcher was the other acquisition.
- 11:24Coleman Brinkman and Rodriguez and Hannon going to Detroit. This one is lined in the right field for a base hit. Hannon on his horse is around second.
- 11:31And Hanna. Hara has to put on the brakes and go back to second base as Tony C. fast fielding holds the senators lead runner.
- 11:40But Maddux on a curve ball. Off balance just shot the ball to right field and here comes the big guy Frank Howard with runners at first and second.
- 11:48And no one out in the first inning.
- 11:52Howard playing first base tonight. He's hitting 293 best of any of the regular Washington players.
- 12:00The six home runs leads in that department 19 runs batted in.
- 12:06Howard had a couple of base hits last night a single and a double.
- 12:11Shift is on not quite as drastic with runners at second and first.
- 12:16The pitch curve way outside. Ball one. Alomar is playing behind second base on the edge of the grass.
- 12:24Fregosi midway between second and third and McMullen hugging the line deep at third base.
- 12:29Outfield very deep and swung toward left field.
- 12:35Runners at second and first. No one out the pitch. Outside with a fast ball. 2 and 0.
- 12:43Right involved in an early jam.
- 12:47Hara with the leadoff walk and Maddux with a single to right field.
- 12:51Occupy second and first.
- 12:54No one out and 2 and 0 to count on Howard.
- 12:58Right set. Double check. The pitch.
- 13:01Strike. Fast ball taken by Howard. He kept it away from Frank.
- 13:07Howard called the strongest baseball player that Ted Williams has ever seen.
- 13:15He has to be the biggest in the major leagues.
- 13:196'7 and about 280.
- 13:23The 2 on pitch. Low.
- 13:26Three balls and a strike.
- 13:31On deck. Young Dick Billings. Right handed hitter.
- 13:40Hara from second.
- 13:42Maddux from first base. They have their lead.
- 13:45A big pitch. 3 and 1. Howard swinging if he likes it.
- 13:49Here it comes. He takes low. Ball four.
- 13:54The Senators have a base loaded against Clyde Wright in the first inning.
- 13:58On two walks and a single. And here's Dick Billings, the left fielder batting 283.
- 14:04Another of the Senator youngsters.
- 14:09He does not have the youth that the 22-year-old Hara enjoys or Biffner on deck at 24.
- 14:17He's a graduate of Michigan State.
- 14:20And he is 28 years old. Right handed batter.
- 14:27With Denver last year he hit 3-0-5. 15 home run. Right pitch. Low. Ball one.
- 14:36Hara third. Maddux at second. Howard at first. No one out. Senator first inning. No score.
- 14:42And Washington with a chance to take the early advantage.
- 14:46They can feel playing back. They'll give up a run for a chance at a double play.
- 14:51Kickoff move at second. And they don't get him and the throw gets away.
- 14:55Here comes the runner Hara. He's four.
- 14:58Fregosi picks up the ball behind his position at shortstop.
- 15:02They had a good chance at Maddux as Alomar slipped in from second base.
- 15:06But the throw hit Maddux and ricocheted behind Fregosi out at the deep shortstop.
- 15:11And Hara alertly sped in from third with the first run of the game.
- 15:16Wright is charged with an error.
- 15:20And the Senators on two walks a single and an air have a run without an out recorded yet.
- 15:27Maddux stayed at second. Howard at first.
- 15:30Good heady play by Hara. He was ready to go as soon as the ball got away.
- 15:34Did not hesitate. Wright delivers. Swung on. A bounce at his short.
- 15:39Fregosi goes to second for one. Alomar to first. Not in time.
- 15:45Safe on the field. His choice is filling. Howard a race. Six-four.
- 15:50And Maddux moves to third. One-nothing Senators. Runners to third and first. One out.
- 15:56And right fielder Larry Bittner, who has been on a tear the last week, is a hitter.
- 16:01Left-handed batter. First baseman sent into the outfield by Ted Williams.
- 16:05Bittner has a six-game streak in which he has twelve hits in the six games and is batting 571.
- 16:14Senators, as you recall from Denver, averages 394.
- 16:19Runners lead from the corners. Wright delivers. Strike. Fastball. Knee-high.
- 16:26Again the infield. Playing back for the double play.
- 16:31Spencer holding the runner at first base. Dick Billings.
- 16:37On deck Paul Kazanova, the catcher.
- 16:42Wright set. Here's the pitch. Curve inside. One-and-one. Didn't break much and Billings waiting for it to break.
- 16:48Almost waited too long. Nearly hit him.
- 16:52Outfield. Playing Billings straight away and giving him both lines.
- 16:58Tony C. way off the line and Wright not expecting him to pull.
- 17:04Attacks from third. Billings from first. The pitch. Swung on a miss.
- 17:08Fastball sinking in the count one and two.
- 17:15The Senators who had an atrocious month of May.
- 17:21Getting Juneau off to the right start after closing out May with a win.
- 17:24Four-nothing against the Angels on Memorial Day and winning last night 6-5. They get a one-nothing later late tonight.
- 17:29Fastball low. Two-and-two to Bittner.
- 17:32The Angels meanwhile, winning only two and losing five on this road trip, now find themselves ten and a half games behind Oakland
- 17:40and in a tie with Milwaukee for fourth place. Just a game and a half in front of Chicago.
- 17:46The Senators are nine and a half behind Boston and Baltimore at the beginning of play tonight.
- 17:52Two-two pitch. Swung on a miss. And for the first time in the series Bittner did not look good. Wright had him fooled.
- 18:00Kept the ball low and got him on low fastball. One strike out for Clyde Wright. It comes at a big spot.
- 18:07And here's Paul Casanova hitting 235.
- 18:12The Nats can't get the run on the out.
- 18:16Anfield can move back a little deeper.
- 18:19Still at third and Billings at first. A run in. Couple of walks, a single and an error in the first inning.
- 18:26Wright from the stretch. Looks at Billings to pitch. Swung on. Bounced to the right side. Alomar has to charge the ball.
- 18:32His hurried throw in time to get Casanova and Wright pitches out of it. One run on one hit, one error and two left.
- 18:39And after one, the Washington Senators won the California Angels nothing.
- 18:47A word now from Continental Airlines about promises. Because keeping promises is a big thing at Continental.
- 18:54Continental promises you a culture economy seat as wide as first class and I guarantee it.
- 18:59They're all that wide, you know, on all of Continental 707 and all their 727 fans yet.
- 19:05Maybe some airlines promise you a wide seat and you just find it doesn't happen to be available on the particular flight you're on.
- 19:12Or some airlines will promise a handy table that folds down over the middle seat but then somebody comes and sits in that seat.
- 19:19Well that's reason enough for specifying Continental Airlines every time you fly.
- 19:24Because that Continental keeping promises is a matter of pride.
- 19:28And they promise you a culture economy seat as wide as first class and they guarantee it.
- 19:33Call Continental or call their partner in getting things done for you, your travel agent.
- 19:38And that's why Continental Airlines, a proud bird with a golden tail.
- 19:46One nothing Washington, top of the second. Ken McMullin leads it off for the Angels.
- 19:50Mack who celebrated his 29th birthday last night with a home run and an RVI single is hitting 245.
- 19:58Speaking of birthdays, Jim Maloney will light 31 candles tonight as Maloney celebrates his birthday.
- 20:05Another strike from Denny McLean, 0-1.
- 20:11McLean only 27.
- 20:14His pitch from the side is a curveball outside, 1-1.
- 20:17McLean will come over the top, he'll come three quarters sometimes all the way from the side and crossfire.
- 20:24He's ready, the 1-1 pitch.
- 20:26Fastball ripped on one hop to the shortstop, Harrah.
- 20:28He's got it.
- 20:29Throw to first in time.
- 20:30And Harrah Handcuff was able to juggle that drive off McMullin's bat.
- 20:34Get a second chance at it, it was hit so hard that he still had time to throw out McMullin.
- 20:41Tony Canigliaro heading 235 with four home runs, steps in.
- 20:47John Stevenson to follow.
- 20:56McLean working quickly delivers.
- 20:58Swung on and fouled high out of play.
- 21:00McLean sailing back down into the lower tier, flips around, threw a few hands.
- 21:08The Angels and Washington an off day tomorrow.
- 21:12Washington will host Oakland over the weekend and the Angels go up to the Finns and meet the Boston Red Sox Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Sunday.
- 21:21Sunday's game televised.
- 21:22KTLA Channel 5 beginning at 10.30.
- 21:25The one strike pitch, change inside, a straight change, 1-1.
- 21:34Right back comes McLean from the side, it's bounced over his head behind second.
- 21:37Harrah can't get it.
- 21:38Cullen comes up with it, it's thrown to first, not in time.
- 21:41The shortstop and second baseman crisscrossing behind the bag at second.
- 21:45McMullin came up with it, juggled for a moment and then from the shortstop side, the second baseman firing off balance but not in time.
- 21:51An infield hit for Canigliaro, the first hit off McLean.
- 21:56And with one out, here's John Stevenson.
- 22:03Stevenson's average, 325.
- 22:18McLean from the set position, the pitch, swung on line, drive base, hit center field.
- 22:21Canigliaro has a chance to make third, he's on his way.
- 22:24Up with the ball is Maddox, here comes the throw.
- 22:26Canigliaro slides in safely on a single to center field by John Stevenson.
- 22:31And for Stevenson, that breaks the string a 13 straight out.
- 22:37Canigliaro able to load it to third where an out can outscore Tony C with a tying run.
- 22:42Canigliaro with a late five seemed to jam his foot into the bag as he made his slide but he's alright.
- 22:48Stevenson at first base.
- 22:51Back to back singles by Tony C and Stevenson.
- 22:54Speaking of ending batting slumps, how about Louis Apparicio?
- 22:58He finally got a hit after 44 straight outs.
- 23:01Of all the people in the American league that you would say who is going to go into a thump like that, you wouldn't guess Apparicio.
- 23:07With his speed he figures he'll get just some leg hits.
- 23:10And here's Sandy Alomar, he swings line drive base hit center field.
- 23:13Canigliaro scores, there goes Stevenson to third.
- 23:16Here's the throw by Maddox, it's cut off with a short stop and the Angels have runners in the corners.
- 23:20And the game is tied at one apiece.
- 23:23Alomar, last night, suddenly seemed to find that hitting stroke.
- 23:28He singled twice sharply up the middle and on the first hit from McLean, lines a single to center field.
- 23:33His 20th RBI and Sandy Alomar again leads the Angels and runs batted in.
- 23:38Donnie C, scoring from third and Stevenson around to third.
- 23:42And with one out, here's Clyde Wright with a chance to give his ball club the lead.
- 23:47Pitch by McLean, breaking ball low and outside, backhanded by Casanova.
- 23:51In field playing back with the exception of third baseman Don Wert.
- 23:54He's back high, he would come to the plate.
- 23:58The pitch, flung on, hit off home plate up the third baseline foul.
- 24:02Casanova gloves it as he moves into the fungo circle to the left.
- 24:07One ball, one strike to Clyde Wright who has one RBI this year, four hits and 31 at bat.
- 24:13That figures out at 129.
- 24:20McLean with four victories and eight losses and although the fans still find him with a bit of glamour,
- 24:29some of the reporters starting to get a little nasty regarding McLean.
- 24:33There goes Alomar, the pitch is high and inside, Casanova throws the third but no play there.
- 24:37Alomar has his 12th stolen base.
- 24:40Casanova threw out Sandy last night, only the second time that that's been done this year.
- 24:45So Alomar with a stolen base is at second.
- 24:49Stevenson alertly, and as a catcher he knew what Casanova might be thinking,
- 24:53bluffing the throw to second, try to pick him off third.
- 24:55He was hinged to the bag.
- 24:56Now the infield moves in.
- 24:57The pitch, flung on line, drive base, hit right field.
- 24:59Bittner plays it on one hop.
- 25:01One run score, here comes Alomar.
- 25:03Here comes the throw, close play, Alomar is out of it.
- 25:15Line, drive, base, hit and Bittner charging the ball, got it on the first hop
- 25:20and it was not too far from home plate at that point because Bittner was playing in for Clyde Wright.
- 25:25A perfect one hop throw that got to Casanova although it was to the first base side.
- 25:30Casanova received the ball and then making a dive, was able to get the glove on the toes of Alomar
- 25:36as he made a slide to the plate.
- 25:38The Angels then get one run as Stevenson scores.
- 25:40Alomar race 9-2 on Clyde Wright's RBI single to right field.
- 25:45The Angels with four straight singles off Sandy McLean take the lead 2-1 in the second.
- 25:49Repose the hitter, curve ball swung on and fouled out of play.
- 25:53Gogolowski begins the throw in the Washington Bulls end.
- 25:57Clyde has his second RBI of the year.
- 26:03Repose, fly to left, his first at bat.
- 26:06Clyde Wright at first.
- 26:09Howard playing behind him.
- 26:11So after McCullum hit the ball hard to the shortstop here for an out.
- 26:15And Conigliaro Stevenson, Alomar and Wright single and order.
- 26:18The pitch high over the head of Repose with a breaking ball, 1-1.
- 26:27A claim.
- 26:29Reading Casanova.
- 26:31There's no no yet.
- 26:32Wright with a safety lead, the pitch high, curve ball.
- 26:35Again he floated one up around the eyes of Repose, 2-1 to Roger.
- 26:41Alomar got a good break from second base.
- 26:43But it was a matter of that line drive of Wright's getting out to Bittner in a hurry,
- 26:46one hop and relayed right back in to Casanova.
- 26:49And just in time to Nip Alomar.
- 26:51The pitch swung on, popped up.
- 26:53High, high on the right side.
- 26:54Cullen comes down from second on the infield grass.
- 26:56Behind them on makes the catch.
- 26:59In the inning, two runs, four hits, no errors, and one man left.
- 27:04And after an inning and a half in Washington, the Angels 2, the Senators 1.
- 27:10Hello, small car expert, you're on the air.
- 27:12You want to turn your radio down, please?
- 27:13I'm sorry, a small car expert, did you tell that last caller that there's a perfect Datsun for everyone?
- 27:18Yes I did.
- 27:19Small car expert, you're on the air.
- 27:20I'm looking for a zippy two-door sedan.
- 27:22Try the Datsun 510, goes from zero to 60 in less than 14 seconds.
- 27:26But it's got to be comfortable.
- 27:27It is.
- 27:28Small car expert.
- 27:29Listen, I've had it with my small cars.
- 27:31Kids climbing on me, dog with a hot tongue panning all over the back seat.
- 27:34I need more room.
- 27:35I'd suggest the Datsun 510 four-door.
- 27:37Plenty of room and at a very low cost.
- 27:39How about a station wagon?
- 27:40Datsun makes a five-door wagon.
- 27:42Plenty of extras included in the purchase price.
- 27:44Does Datsun make a truck?
- 27:45Yep, the perfect pickup.
- 27:46Little hustler, America's best-selling import truck.
- 27:48Listen, I've got to take another call.
- 27:49Anything else?
- 27:50Yeah, is my husband with you?
- 27:52Mmm, enjoy the Datsun, can you decide?
- 27:57Be sure to see the full line of Datsuns at Auto Expo Sports Arena now through June the 6th.
- 28:03The angels lead after an inning and a half.
- 28:15Washington will send Wirt Cullen and McClain to face Clyde Wright in the bottom of the second inning.
- 28:20Before we get to the action, let's pause for KCHV and Indio Palm Springs and all our angel stations.
- 28:27Station identification, this is the Angels Radio Network.
- 28:31Thank you very much, gentlemen. This is KMND Radio in Mesa, Arizona.
- 28:36It's one minute before 5 o'clock.
- 28:38The Mesa Community College baseball game coming up this afternoon on KMND FM at 645.
- 28:46645 at 93.3 on your dial.
- 28:48Now back to Washington.
- 28:54Don Wirt, little right-handed hitter, waits as Clyde Wright winds his pitch.
- 28:59Strike, fastball, outside corner.
- 29:02Wirt batting 0-77, also a slow start with the Senators.
- 29:05He has just two hits in 26th's bat.
- 29:09I feel playing him to pull.
- 29:12Fried wine, here it comes.
- 29:14Scrooge misses outside, one and one.
- 29:24Wirt has been an enigma.
- 29:27He's had some great seasons and then some years where he couldn't come close to getting a hit.
- 29:31This one is ripped on two hops to Fregosi.
- 29:33He's up with it right in position, throws quickly to first for the out.
- 29:36Wirt at 63.
- 29:39Tim Cullen, the second baseman, batting 176.
- 29:42But Cullen in this series has been tough to keep off base.
- 29:46He had two walks and an infield hit in the first game, and last night two walks and two hits.
- 29:53So he is three for four and has been on base seven of eight times in the series.
- 29:59Right-handed batter, chokes up on the handle, close stance, stands right up on the plate.
- 30:04Curve misses the outside corner, ball one.
- 30:08Denny McLean to follow.
- 30:11A 2-1 angel lead.
- 30:15Wright winds the pitch.
- 30:18Strike with a fastball, one and one.
- 30:21Wright appears to have better rhythm than he did in New York,
- 30:24and Clyde complained about the slope of the mound at Yankee Stadium.
- 30:27He said he just never felt that he could get all of his timing together,
- 30:31that the drop-off leading to the plate was so quick that he seemed to be stumbling.
- 30:36This one is slicing foul down the right field line and way back into the seat.
- 30:40The counterball and two strikes to Tim Cullen.
- 30:46Well, Jim Maloney celebrating his 31st birthday,
- 30:49he is not the happiest man in the ballpark tonight in an angel uniform.
- 30:55That honor goes to Chico Ruiz, one-two pitch Scroogey Low.
- 30:59Chico visited the Mexican Embassy today and has learned that a visa has been arranged
- 31:06and his parents will be able to visit him from Cuba.
- 31:11The 2-2 pitch by Wright.
- 31:13Curveball, check swing, roller up the third baseline.
- 31:15McMullen handles it at the cut of the grass.
- 31:17Go to first, dug out by Spencer in time for the yards.
- 31:21Ball took a funny bounce as it came to McMullen.
- 31:23He was looking forward right on the chalk line,
- 31:25and he had moved very quickly to his left to glove it,
- 31:28and it took an angular hop to his left.
- 31:33Chico will fly out of Boston Sunday night to Mexico City,
- 31:36and within a couple of weeks, his parents, both around 65 years of age,
- 31:40will be able to fly out of Cuba through Mexico to Chico's home in San Diego.
- 31:45The pitch to McLean swung on a miss.
- 31:48It will be the first time that he has seen his parents in over 10 years,
- 31:53and he was so happy there were tears in his eyes.
- 31:58Wright lines, one strike fit.
- 32:01Curve, strike two calls.
- 32:03Big breaking curve that nibbled the outside corner.
- 32:07Oh and two to McLean.
- 32:08He's hitting 130, has three hits in 23 events, but has driven in six runs.
- 32:12He has a triple.
- 32:18Where is number 17 in red on the back of his white plantles?
- 32:23No and on, two out.
- 32:24Senators second inning, two to one angels.
- 32:27And the two strike pitch.
- 32:29McLean swings and lines at the right field.
- 32:31Conigliero is right there, however, to stab it with one hand as he moved to his left.
- 32:35McLean lines out, and the Senators are out one, two, three in the second.
- 32:39After two at Kennedy Stadium, angels two, Washington one.
- 32:44Say here's a money saving idea from the men at the sign of the chevron.

- 33:37Right now at all standard stations and participating Chevron demons.
- 33:47Two one, the angels lead top of the third and with more action here's Don Well.
- 33:51Thank you Dick. Alex Johnson leads it off and Alex had walked his first time out.
- 33:54Here's a smash up the middle for a base hit.
- 33:56The dynamic lane throws a curve here to Alex and got it up in his eyes.
- 34:01And Alex Johnson went to work on it and slugs this one up the center.
- 34:05So Alex is one for one. The batter will be shortstop Jim Fragosi.
- 34:08And in the Jim's first trip to the plate, he had fouled out to the catcher Casanova.
- 34:12And the on deck man then will be Jim Spencer.
- 34:15So the angels two runs, five hits.
- 34:17Washington one run, one hit, off wide right over the first two.
- 34:21AJ wait a bit, he goes.
- 34:23The pitch is cut on and hammered foul up on the screen.
- 34:25And Johnson taking off in a hurry.
- 34:27Fast acceleration as McLean didn't pay too much attention to him.
- 34:34Well Denny's next pitching assignment will be on Sunday.
- 34:37And he almost committed the block right there.
- 34:40He was very close to being in contact with the pitching rubber and the ball spilled out of his glove.
- 34:45And had he been in contact with it, Alex would have been awarded second base.
- 34:49Sidearm curve in for a strike and the count is on two.
- 34:52Denny on Sunday will work against the Oakland ball club and he will go against the sensational Vita Blues.
- 34:57Be the day game on Sunday.
- 35:02Alex wanders out to his lead.
- 35:04And the pitch to Fragosi's fun on ground ball toward third.
- 35:07Picked up by workplace at the calling one on the first double play.
- 35:11So the Angels in a hurry have two away on the third.
- 35:14And the matter will be Jim Spencer.
- 35:16Jim hit one down the right field line that finally carried a foot or so into foul territory in the corner.
- 35:21And Larry Bittner took care of it.
- 35:23It's 335 feet down the line here at Hennedy Stadium.
- 35:26378 to right center out in front of the giant scoreboard.
- 35:30The pitch to Spencer way up above the line.
- 35:33And the ball is on the right side of the line.
- 35:36378 to right center out in front of the giant scoreboard. The pitch to Spencer way up over his dead ball one.
- 35:42381 in the left center field.
- 35:44And in the dead center field 410 feet in this completely enclosed park.
- 35:52Spencer hitting 181.
- 35:54Starting out the evening's play. The one-nothing pitch.
- 35:56And there's the curve that breaks through for a strike.
- 35:58Let her high to make it one and one.
- 36:00Two down for the Angels.
- 36:02They lead it 2-1 here in the third.
- 36:04And they claim the hasty worker again.
- 36:06He started the rock into the motion.
- 36:08But then he saw Casanova make one other sign.
- 36:10The one-one delivery now off the curve.
- 36:12A line drive out of the right center field.
- 36:14That ball is settling in quickly for a base hit.
- 36:16It almost spins its way by Maddox.
- 36:18But Kelly able to reach out to his right to glove it quickly.
- 36:21So Jim Spencer lays the line drive into right center.
- 36:24The Angels now have six hits.
- 36:27The batter will be Ken McMullen.
- 36:30Mack had grounded a short in the second.
- 36:37The Angels in double figures in the hitting department out here last night.
- 36:40Despite the loss.
- 36:41Quick curve and the dirt ball on.
- 36:45Where were their team batting average?
- 36:47The same as when the series got underway.
- 36:49Team figure 222.
- 36:511-0 delivery.
- 36:53Missed inside.
- 36:551-0 delivery.
- 36:57Missed inside ball two and it's 2-0.
- 37:05So the Angels with the base run it to begin with.
- 37:07Alex and then Fregosi double play.
- 37:09Sidearm curve.
- 37:11And it's low ball three. 3-0. Off state.
- 37:20Denny with a 3-0 pitch.
- 37:22Getting first strike 3-1.
- 37:25McLean doesn't make much of a hesitation at the belt.
- 37:30When he comes down in that area the hitter better be ready.
- 37:34Because he doesn't pause very long.
- 37:36Spencer about five feet away from the bag at first.
- 37:39A little bit more now.
- 37:40The next one is cut out of this.
- 37:42Good breaking ball here. 3-2.
- 37:45So McLean who had not been state to a run in his last two starts.
- 37:49Senators gave him one to work with in the first inning.
- 37:54And Denny trying to break out of a personal three game losing streak.
- 37:573-2 delivery low with it. Ball four.
- 37:59So Spencer goes to second base. Ken McClellan moves along the line to first base.
- 38:03The batter will be Tony Canigliaro.
- 38:05And Tony with one out from the second.
- 38:07Half one over the mound out of the reach of McLean.
- 38:10Second base and Cullen in cutting in front of the bag finally made contact with it.
- 38:14But by this time he had carried well beyond second base going towards short.
- 38:19So no chance to try to throw across his body that nailed Tony Canigliaro.
- 38:23And the infield hit was the gate open to there.
- 38:26John Stevenson then on a high fastball as McLean threw right up over the top.
- 38:30Hit a line drive to right center.
- 38:31Swing and a miss there by Tony on a slider for strike one.
- 38:34Sandy Alomar then followed with a base hit.
- 38:36And that too came on a high fastball to Alomar.
- 38:39So McLean again in dealing with Alomar batting left handed.
- 38:43He came right up over the top of the pitch.
- 38:45Then five right with his single in the right field.
- 38:47And Alomar was thrown out of the plate.
- 38:49One strike pitch hit him on the hands and he runs his up toward the fresh box off to our right.
- 38:53Strike two.
- 39:01Nothing and two count on Canigliaro.
- 39:03Runners the first and second.
- 39:05The walk to McMullin the second issued by McLean this evening.
- 39:19Denny who wears contact lenses.
- 39:21Swims through here at the Casanova for the sign and the two strike pitch.
- 39:25Tony C drives it high in the air out in left field.
- 39:27It may be playable Billy's coming to the line just across the line and grabs this.
- 39:32About ten feet foul for the out.
- 39:35So sky high fly ball down the left field line off to that of Canigliaro.
- 39:38And that takes care of things for the Californians.
- 39:40No runs, two hits, no errors to pair left.
- 39:42And the score at the end of the top of the third angels to Washington one.
- 40:42Last of the third from Kennedy Memorial Stadium.
- 40:56One of the feature stories for baseball that came out of New York following Vita Blue's performance against the Yankees.
- 41:02The fact that Vita Blue is driving around Fun City today in a new baby blue Cadillac convertible.
- 41:09Compliments of owner Charlie Finley.
- 41:12In fact, the story had it that Charlie chipped in an extra twenty five dollars and purchased a personalized California license plate reading blue.
- 41:19And the brainstorm got a hold of Finley as he was watching his twenty one year old left hander beat the Yankees five to two last night.
- 41:25And Vita said to Mr. Finley, thank you, but he refused to get carried away.
- 41:30He said, I'm not really the type.
- 41:31I don't care what it is just so long as it gets me to the ballpark and back.
- 41:35First delivery here to tell me how the leadoff man and shortstop and quiet throws it outside ball one.
- 41:41And the thing worrying about the worrying Vita Blue is whether he can afford to run the car on his salary of just over the minimum of twelve thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars.
- 41:49This is cut on ground ball to our chart going to be tough here for Fugosi deep in the holes.
- 41:53Long throw to first base to get him. No.
- 42:05And Jim Spencer vacated first base a little too early.
- 42:08Jim Fugosi gunned the throw to first base.
- 42:14Jim trying to make that quick move away from the bag.
- 42:18And this part of the media plays so Chubby Harrah is rewarded with an infield hit. The batter will be center fielder Ellie Maddox and Ellie with a base hit his first time up.
- 42:30So that is only the second hit given up by Wright here in the last of the third now.
- 42:34Curve high outside ball one.
- 42:42Frank Howard that Turkish power Lottie. I'm a very nervous individual and perspires a great deal.
- 42:50And of course the humidity reading being a little bit higher this evening than it has been first two games of the series and uses that to wipe off those massive arms curve across the knees for a strike to make it one and one.
- 43:04Frank taking care of that sure right now as he watches right right here deal with Elliot Maddox the outfield around slightly to the left for Maddox.
- 43:15Harris laid the fix fastball clip foul this will mark its way up into the second tier off to our right and then ricochet down below and the count goes to ball one and strike two.
- 43:27One of the scheduling in the league after the big breakers at Geneski Park Chicago involving the white the White Sox fan and Dan Buford of the Baltimore players and then a cool off during because they even though Baltimore remained in town they had an off day yesterday and they play again tonight.
- 43:46The chapter the curve smash back to right picks it up. I have a study makes the force their guns to throw the Spencer to complete the double play. So the Angels register one here. The ball was smashed hard by Elliot Maddox the brand of the line back to get a right.
- 44:01He got the ball very quickly and he managed to wheel and fire accurately to Sadie Alavar and Sandy then on to Spencer and the Angels have a twin coming of their own. Two down here's Frank Howard. Frank walked in the first inning.
- 44:20Right delivery off speed curve and first strike to make it on one and the manager of the Orioles Earl Weaver indicated that Dan Buford would be in the Oriole lineup tonight.
- 44:35First strike that's half foul off the head of the bat to the right side of the plate strike to the Washington and the delivery by Clyde curve long outside ball one and two.
- 44:56So now Buford will be playing in left field tonight.
- 45:00For the birds in Chicago. They have that little safety valve.
- 45:05Now we'll see if it works for the off day and a peculiar off day to come in the middle of the series one to delivery now to Howard goes after it boxes it to the right side and go by the only man guarding the right side.
- 45:18Now the Angels back down on our for go see in the quantity playing second and third.
- 45:34Nelson points out it's getting a little bit murky here in the ballpark immunity has something to do with it but it may have been our ride from the ballpark back to the Washington Hilton Hotel last night.
- 45:49It added to it. Dick Billings takes a strike over the outer edge on one for the rental car.
- 46:05The hotel one strike delivery checks and takes it low one and one the fan belt slipped off. So now the car is overheating. And then when the valve when the valve started the pound that little rhythm on the drum.
- 46:19That was the candy cameras scene. We went down the street to Washington.
- 46:25We're going to go on delivery now to Billings and it's foul back off the mask of Larry that this combination really of steam and smoke coming out from under the hood and the funniest scene of all we pulled up to a construction site as we were headed for Connecticut Avenue.
- 46:38And there was a young man standing there with a flag to indicate whether you could pass it whether cars could pass or not. They have this huge crane and the rear end of the crane was kind of turning itself out of the intersection so he had to hold up traffic from time to time.
- 46:50And the car goes round ball hit up the middle that for goes he goes for it and then play will be the first base in time.
- 46:58So Billings rounds out short the first and the young man stood there with a flag.
- 47:03And we were forced to stop because of the position of the crane but he wanted us to go. He wanted to wave that thing because when he saw the smoke pouring out from under the hood.
- 47:11He thought certainly that he was going to go up with us but we managed to finally get back within range of the hotel and.
- 47:20And.
- 47:21Dick Nelson did the job I'll tell you that he stood around and watched the steam the front side was when he finally got it back to the hotel after it installed and died a couple of times he couldn't get it to stop.
- 47:32He turned off the ignition and he kept buttering and boiling out all that smoke.
- 47:36Well the third inning has stopped right here no runs two hits no errors the man laughed in the score at the end of three angels to Washington one.
- 47:49You know even though players have numbers on their uniforms no player likes to be thought of nearly as a number and neither does an airline passenger.
- 47:55But word has got around that you are a number when you fly on a 747.
- 47:59Perhaps that is the case on time but never on continental because continental sentiment 747 is almost as warm and personal as a friend's home.
- 48:07And it's of course the little things that make it that way the same gracious hostesses to greet you as you come aboard also serve you throughout the flight.
- 48:14The directors of passenger service are especially helpful people.
- 48:17You enjoy a first class leg room and all coach and economy seats plus free lounges exclusively for coach and economy passengers.
- 48:24Continental 747 departs every day from Honolulu leaving at 10 a.m. and 12 20 p.m.
- 48:30So see your travel agent or telephone continental the proud bird of the Pacific.
- 48:35John Stevenson the batter in the first delivery term set a low for ball one and then the next pitch to him John rips one down the right field line is going to be fair on the corner.
- 48:42And that's what bounces over the fast the ground rule double for Stevenson.
- 48:45So John is two for two off McLean.
- 48:48Got the fastball the first time the curve ball here so he's handled two pitches well. Here comes the Addy Alomar.
- 49:00John Stevenson who have been having his problems lately and now coming up against the veteran right handed Danny McLean has given him some personal punishment.
- 49:09Here's Alomar.
- 49:10You got the right over the top fastball from McLean for the base hit in the right center field in the second inning and the pitch fastball low with this one.
- 49:19But in the strikes on across the knees to make it on one.
- 49:23Alomar with a chance to get Stevenson home here the angels lead to one in the fourth inning and we'll bring you up to date and some of the other games as we go along here in the fourth.
- 49:33McLean works again Alomar swings ground ball at Howard backhand goes to third and the tag is made on Stevenson.
- 49:41So Frank Howard from Washington, Miami, picks this one up a good backhand at top.
- 49:46Saw Stevenson going for third and he gunned him down and John Stevenson a man with a very surprised look on his face as he came in standing and he almost danced with Don Word.
- 49:57He did a little fast shuffle there and will apply the tag so on the field of choice Alomar is the first base and Stevenson is a gunner and the matter will be Angel pitcher Clyde Wright.
- 50:07In the first of two Cubs at Cincinnati they're tied 2-2 at the end of six that's hands against Wilcox.
- 50:13St. Louis at Pittsburgh getting underway Cleveland against Walker.
- 50:19Houston being entertained by Atlanta tonight Wilson against Reed toss over to first base Alomar back and he picked up his 12 stolen base in the second inning.
- 50:27Philadelphia will be at San Diego and Los Rios at Los Angeles today the match beats San Francisco 5-2 Alomar goes to pitch inside throw through to second base he guns him down.
- 50:35Alomar red hot about the call there was a photo finish there it appeared that Alomar had a big hit with a strong throw by Casanova.
- 50:50Say that for a man working behind the plate he doesn't throw it off target.
- 50:56So one of baseball's greatest moments of excitement with Casanova up and firing and Alomar going trying for his 13 stolen base but he is out of there and the angels have to go away.
- 51:14Why right remains out to play to the next little bit of Clyde low with a ball to 2 and 0.
- 51:23Flipping pitch Peter takes it high and tight ball free.
- 51:33No Galuski gets up and throws with the bullpen again next delivery in for a strike that pops out of the middle of Casanova.
- 51:383 and 1 flying from Los Angeles to Denver is quick and very easy on continental with eight nonstop daily.
- 51:54Young man working in the bullpen Billy Galuski is about due for a rather long stretch of service activity.
- 52:09The angels counted it off with Stevenson's two base hit but the whole thing turns out to be another story for him here in the fourth inning no runs one hit no errors and nobody left out there and the score at the end of the top of the fourth angels to Washington 1.
- 52:24Small Carr X Berg you're on the air.
- 52:27I've been waiting for an hour to talk to you and I'm calling.
- 52:30Small Carr X Berg go ahead but don't be nasty.
- 52:32Hey I've been listening to your show for weeks now and you say there's a perfect Datsun for everybody.
- 52:36Yeah what's your point sir I've got other calls.
- 52:38Perfect economy the Datsun 1200 two door sedans the little something about perfect styling you can't beat the something special the Datsun two door coupe you can beat it but you'd probably get up the hood.
- 52:49Small Carr X Berg I was listening to that last guy you know about a whole line of perfect that's what about perfect convenience the Datsun five door station wagon it's a kick to drive a perfect performance I'd have to say the Datsun 240 Z out of selling GT around about perfect comfort the Datsun five tens the two and four doors at
- 53:05the same time sounds like a perfect line all right wait you didn't ask about the Datsun pickup truck I don't care about the Datsun pickup truck.
- 53:17Be sure to see the full line of Datsun said auto expo sports arena.
- 53:21Now through June the sixth.
- 53:29The drive of the fourth now with Larry Bittner Paul Casanova and Don word the man scheduled to face quite right.
- 53:41Johnny C and right field Roger opposed and center opposed working a step or two toward left center field and moving into a deeper position now and then checks the wire fence behind him to find out where he is in relation to that.
- 53:53Alex Johnson straightaway left her bounce off the plate toward second baseman Sandy Alomar a waist high hop for Santos the top dispenser for the out and Washington has one away on the first pitch walking up to the plate now capture Paul Casanova Paul grounded out to Alomar in the first inning.
- 54:14Good thing good to say Jim Fragasi making some strong throws from short tonight and he has accuracy has been good and Jim has been a struggle for.
- 54:28The pitch curve and for a strike and it's on line and understandably so too even though you throw on the side before game action.
- 54:36Getting into the ball game and playing in the game conditions and finding yourself yourself in different positions and trying to find yourself properly to make accurate throws and so Jim with each game now this seems to be an improvement for him.
- 54:48Next delivery is a little low and close for the curve ball to count as one and one one down nobody on angels lead two to one and right next pitch one one delivery lifted down the right field side to the old problem here.
- 55:03And you see coming on can't get to it.
- 55:06And now the ball picked up by an egg layer he talked it back toward the end to him and then allowed to talk to Sandy Alomar.
- 55:12So dying fly ball slice that way by Casanova in for Washington's fourth hit and the batter will be third baseman Don word.
- 55:20And then he's down and grab the Dupre go see in the second inning.
- 55:35And he starts with an 077 batting average right hander the road runner and the pitch to him and he plants this one foul down the first base side.
- 55:51They've given Tim Cullen the eighth man in the lineup and nickname the worm.
- 55:58I don't know why.
- 56:03And the second bat here by Don word.
- 56:09And for Bittner when they call him double I double T like spelling of his name that was the I.T.T. NER.
- 56:24Casanova's lead at first not a very long one and the pitch curve and the slap this one foul to the right of the play like to
- 56:36got to complete that to carry right back from the ballpark last night with with J.C. Nelson.
- 56:43And when we finally reached the stoplight where there are three young men and they were looking at all of this awful smoke pouring out of the hood of the car and find the one came over.
- 56:52And you know everyone keep a straight face as if we don't even know what's going on and actually can't even see through the windshield and the one man shot and your engines on fire.
- 56:59And you turned to him and said no we're we're charcoal broil broiling some steaks for the Washington National Guard and he just not as if to say well that's it.
- 57:06And we drove away.
- 57:09It was really a candid camera story they thought to pitch apps laying here lobster foul down the first base side Spencer charging up.
- 57:16That makes a fine basket got to this wheels around and fire to Sandy Alomar came over to cover his first base and Casanova gets back.
- 57:23So Jim Spencer with a good play on Don word and about it will be second baseman.
- 57:30The one man that construction worker I can still see the expression on his face when he's holding the flag to stop the car.
- 57:36But at the same time you know he wants to wave that flag wave you on because he did three of the greatest double takes I've ever seen.
- 57:43He look at the car and they look away and they look at the car against you some more smoke and steam curl out from under the hood.
- 57:49That's the color that's it off the plate could be a troublesome play Stevenson at Ford guns to go to first base and it's there in time and a fine piece of reception work on the part of Jim Spencer as he reached around telling the handle the phone.
- 58:01So for the angels for Washington against the angels who did some good defensive work here in the fourth inning.
- 58:07One hit no errors the man left at the end of four it's the angels to in Washington one does F310 work in a major test motorist switched from the gasoline they had previously used to Chevron gasoline with F310 for 2000 miles.
- 58:22Many of them were women and after the test we asked some of them what they thought about F310 Mrs Donna severs seems to be driving better.
- 58:31It just made me feel more comfortable more safe driving my car knowing that I wasn't going to have to be stalled someplace.
- 58:37Mrs Fairfax walk up the pickup is so very good when you want to get by a car and you know that's another fightful point for women and it would just scoop by you know that works fine.
- 58:51Does F310 work.
- 58:53And I told them that I good news I don't have to look for another car because it's performing beautifully.
- 59:01Mrs Gertrude Westcott.
- 59:03And we are getting beautiful knowledge.
- 59:07Miss Vicki Dutton.
- 59:09I trusted my car more.
- 59:11F310 it works.
- 59:18Moving on to the fifth inning of play this is Don Wells with Dick Enberg and Dick Nelson and delighted to have you with us this evening Roger repose will start off the fifth inning angels lead to on your second right down the first pitch by McLean is upstairs for breaking ball Rogers flying to left and pop the second angels to run seven hits one Washington one run four hits and no air McLean's one ball pitch repo swings and whips it foul down into the right field corner high and that one might reach the second tier.

- 1:01:08Now he's got a handball.
- 1:01:11And here's Jim Fragosi he filed out and he grounded into a 5 4 3 double play on the plane and right.
- 1:01:27He's got his McLean and writer at work because you don't have time to think all is coming right up to the plate. As soon as the pitcher gets it McLean is ready he winds the pitch to McFragosi is hung on a high foul fly hook back into the lower deck to the left over to watch it fall in non word.
- 1:01:46Two outs in the fifth inning no one on who to one the angel play and get their two runs in the second and four straight singles can igliaro Stevenson Alomar and right Alomar and right getting the RBI.
- 1:02:00Two singles in a walk in the third but in between for go see a knock into a double play and the leadoff double by Stevenson in the fourth fastball on the outside corner for a strike two strikes to Pregosi.

- 1:07:57There is no.
- 1:08:01There's only.
- 1:08:05The.
- 1:08:08The.

- 1:08:15I.
- 1:08:18I.
- 1:08:19I.
- 1:08:23Who you said.
- 1:08:31Brown screw has resurfaced the infield portion of Kennedy Stadium and we're set to go in the sixth inning
- 1:08:36with Jim Spencer leading off the angels Ken McCullin and Tony Canigliaro to try to add to the angel lead
- 1:08:41it to one Danny McClain into the wind up the right hander delivers the curve ball upstairs ball one McClain
- 1:08:46has had trouble with the slow curve looks at his hand as if to say now what are you doing to me.
- 1:08:51And that high overhand curveball has not been breaking down it's been hanging up off the bill of the
- 1:08:56helmet one all day change is in for a strike a straight change at the knees one and one dispenser was one for
- 1:09:03two in the game the angels with seven hits off McClain in the first five innings but only the two runs when
- 1:09:10they put four singles together in a row low with this pitch two and one Oakland A's are idols tonight
- 1:09:19and tomorrow night and will open a weekend series here in Washington Friday night to one pitch by
- 1:09:25McClain swung on and fouled on the ground a Fred Kenny the first base coach.
- 1:09:28And congratulations to fine young basketball talent Curtis Rowe was signed a half million dollar contract
- 1:09:34with the Detroit Pistons we wish the former UCLA All-American the very best in his NBA career.
- 1:09:41Two two pitch swung on ground ball off the glove of Howard picks up by Cullen he goes to McClain for the
- 1:09:46defense or hit a low getting one hopper wide a first Howard with that long reach got his glove on it deflected
- 1:10:00it to the second baseman Cullen who was coming that way anyway to the left to back it up.
- 1:10:05Rolled right to Cullen and McClain alertly covered first base and the 3 4 1 put out Rob Spencer of the
- 1:10:15base here's Ken McQuillan he has walked and was out on a hard ground ball to short McClain delivers from
- 1:10:24the side of curve ball it sweeps outside ball one.
- 1:10:26McClain comes right back 1 and 0 fastball low 2 and 0 man of many speeds and many deliveries.
- 1:10:35And McClain has the sign is to both it McQuillan checks his swing a cost him a strike fastball.
- 1:10:432 and 1 still a lot of McMullin fans here in Washington he was very popular while playing for the Senators.
- 1:10:562 1 hit low 3 and 1 and Mac now the home run leader with the angels with eight.
- 1:11:13Danny Alomar has regained the RBI top spot on the angel ball club with his 20th tonight.
- 1:11:203 1 hit McQuillan swings and sends a one hopper to work deep at third he has a long throw in time to a way.
- 1:11:29Tony Canigliaro an infield hit behind second and scored and he fouled out to left.
- 1:11:39Tony's brother Billy Canigliaro has moved into the top 10 in the American League batting derby.
- 1:11:47Billy seed just under 300 with a 297 mark and 49 base hit.
- 1:11:53That's as many as Alex Johnson started with tonight and he's the angels best.
- 1:11:59McClain delivers Tony Seegs sends a high hopper over works at deep and short as Tara he throws not in time and it was close.
- 1:12:08Tara showing quite an arm because he actually took two steps on the outfield grass and when he picked the ball out of his glove looked at it before he threw as if he had plenty of time.
- 1:12:18Had he braced quickly and thrown across he might have gotten Tony Seegs on a most difficult play.
- 1:12:23That's about as much range and they said that was the one negative in Harris playbook that he did not move that well side to side.
- 1:12:31But he covered a lot of ground and with that great arm almost threw out Canigliaro who has his second infield hit.
- 1:12:40With two outs Canigliaro at first base.
- 1:12:43John Stevenson has a single and a double two for two looks at a fastball for a strike.
- 1:12:49The angels lead two to one on eight hits twice as many as the senators have collected off wide right.
- 1:12:54We're in the sixth inning and Tony Seegs at first base with two outs one strike pitch.
- 1:12:58Stevenson fouled it off the head of the back.
- 1:13:01Houston Thorn, Sandy Alomar the on deck hitter.
- 1:13:03The small car expert has asked me to invite you to come in.
- 1:13:06Let him help you pick the perfect Datsun for you.
- 1:13:09Remember he's the expert your Southern California Datsun dealer.
- 1:13:13See him soon.
- 1:13:19Two strikes on John Stevenson.
- 1:13:21Couple of exchanges of baseballs.
- 1:13:23Between Casanova, Plano Parallel and the pitcher McLean he's found one that he likes and with two strikes he walks behind the pitching surface.
- 1:13:31And wheels his arm once.
- 1:13:34Pulls up the sleeve on his pitching arm.
- 1:13:36And now right foot on the front edge of the rubber.
- 1:13:40Canigliaro leads. Here's the pitch.
- 1:13:42Inside with a slider one and two to count.
- 1:13:45Angels two, Washington one.
- 1:13:47McLean's one two pitch.
- 1:13:49Stevenson looks at a high curve again.
- 1:13:51That high overhand curve ball does not get down into the strike zone.
- 1:13:55Two balls two strikes.
- 1:13:57Outfield playing Stevenson toward Lafille.
- 1:13:59The pitch.
- 1:14:01Bounced off the plate towards second.
- 1:14:03McMullen has it on the second hopper.
- 1:14:05The ball is in the middle of the field.
- 1:14:07The ball is in the middle of the field.
- 1:14:09The ball is in the middle of the field.
- 1:14:11The ball is in the middle of the field.
- 1:14:13Big board towards second.
- 1:14:15McMullen has it on the second hop.
- 1:14:17On to first base for the out.
- 1:14:19So Cullen to Howard for the final out in the sixth inning.
- 1:14:21No runs are hit, no errors
- 1:14:25and a man left for the home half of the sixth inning
- 1:14:29where the score, angels two Washington one and with a word from the proud bird, here's Don.
- 1:14:31Well, as long as the wonderful feeling in the air when a team comes home after a successful road trip in fact,
- 1:14:35there's always something wonderful about any kind of homecoming.
- 1:14:39Including when you go back to your old hometown.
- 1:14:41hometown, see the place you came from and the people that live there.
- 1:14:44Well this summer come home with Continental Airlines and bring the family.
- 1:14:49Continental makes it easy with family fairs that help take the high cost out of family
- 1:14:52pie.
- 1:14:53So this summer, why not take the family to see the family.
- 1:14:57Show your youngsters where it was happening when you were their age.
- 1:15:00Continental certainly makes it easy and economical to fly back to Chicago or Kansas City, Denver,
- 1:15:05Dallas, Houston, Seattle or dozens of other hometowns.
- 1:15:09Simply call Continental's partner in getting things done for you, your travel agent, or
- 1:15:14call Continental and ask about Continental's low, low family fairs.
- 1:15:18And then come home this summer on Continental Airlines, the proud bird with the golden tail.
- 1:15:24It sounds like the thing to do and of course so many of the folks in the Midwest, the Southwest,
- 1:15:34Northwest, you eagerly await notice from you that you'll be visiting the grandparents
- 1:15:39and aunts and uncles during the summer months and we hope when you make your vacation plans
- 1:15:44you do think first of Continental Airlines because they'll take a good, good care of
- 1:15:48you and that's especially true of the family with not only the lovely hostesses in the
- 1:15:54cabin but the director of passenger service that gives an extra hand and perhaps in many
- 1:15:58ways a man in the cabin more sensitive to the female passenger and giving them special
- 1:16:04attention as well as to the kids.
- 1:16:06Fly Continental this summer.
- 1:16:09Here's a man who can make that horse tide fly, Big Frank Howard.
- 1:16:14The shift on McClellan, Fregosi and Alomar all on the shortstop side.
- 1:16:18Spencer Lone on the right side and right winds the pitch.
- 1:16:22Outside with a fastball.
- 1:16:23For the first time in the series, last time up, Howard shot the ball to right field for
- 1:16:28Vasez taking advantage of the lack of defense on that side of the diamond.
- 1:16:34He walked and single tonight.
- 1:16:36A 2-1 angel leads the pitch.
- 1:16:39Low of the fastball.
- 1:16:402-0.
- 1:16:41The attitude of the angel pitchers almost to the man is they will not let Frank Howard
- 1:16:44beat them which means in this case that if Howard is going to get a base hit he's going
- 1:16:49to have to swing a Clyde Wright's pitch or he will be walked.
- 1:16:53Right winds.
- 1:16:54He has 2-0 delivery.
- 1:16:55Swung on, bounced off the glove of Wright to the second base side.
- 1:16:58Alomar up with it, throws to first and gets him.
- 1:17:00A fine play.
- 1:17:03Wright as the ball was shot high over his head, Leap got the fingertips of his glove
- 1:17:08on it and deflected it into a more difficult play for Alomar who had to move from 10 feet
- 1:17:14on the shortstop side a second to about 15 feet on the second base side and gloved the
- 1:17:19ball stretching as far as he could to his left and then on the run whipped his throw
- 1:17:23to Spencer just in time to get the lumbering Howard who was moving up the line.
- 1:17:281-4-3 on the putout.
- 1:17:29Here's Dick Billings.
- 1:17:30He's 0-2 on a pair of ground balls.
- 1:17:33Right handed hitter, the pitch by Wright.
- 1:17:35Change, it's swung on, high hopper, Wright to Ken McMullen at third.
- 1:17:37He has it, throws the first two away.
- 1:17:41You said it, this game is moving along.
- 1:17:43Two outs in the sixth inning and we've played about an hour and 15 minutes.
- 1:17:49The hitter will be Wright's yielder Larry Bittner.
- 1:17:52Bittner needs a base hit to extend his hitting streak.
- 1:17:55He's hit safely in the last six games.
- 1:17:57He is struck out and grounded out.
- 1:17:59Doesn't look quite as smooth against the left-hander Wright as he has against the right-handed
- 1:18:04pitching in this series.
- 1:18:07Wright's delivery outside with a fast ball.
- 1:18:11Paul Casanova would be next.
- 1:18:17Oakland coming to town, they set a new team record for games in which they did at least
- 1:18:21one home run.
- 1:18:22Swung on, bounced by the mound, near the bag, Alomar has it on the run.
- 1:18:26On the first for the out.
- 1:18:27And there go the Senators in the sixth inning as Wright breezing along, retires them in
- 1:18:31order for the second straight frame.
- 1:18:33And after six at Kennedy Memorial Stadium, the score remains the Angels two, Washington
- 1:18:37one.
- 1:18:38Hello, small car expert, you're on the air.
- 1:18:41You want to turn your radio down, please?
- 1:18:43Oh, I'm sorry.
- 1:18:44A small car expert, did you tell that last caller that there's a perfect Datsun for everyone?
- 1:18:47Yes, I did.
- 1:18:49Small car expert, you're on the air.
- 1:18:50I'm looking for a zippy two-door sedan.
- 1:18:52Try the Datsun 510.
- 1:18:53Goes from zero to 16 in less than 14 seconds.
- 1:18:55But it's got to be comfortable.
- 1:18:56It is.
- 1:18:57Small car expert.
- 1:18:58Listen, I've had it with my small cars.
- 1:19:01Kids climbing on me, dog with a hot tongue panning all over the backseat.
- 1:19:04I need more room.
- 1:19:05I'd suggest the Datsun 510 four-door.
- 1:19:08Plenty of room and at a very low cost.
- 1:19:09How about a suspension wagon?
- 1:19:11Datsun makes a five-door wagon.
- 1:19:12Plenty of extras included in the purchase price.
- 1:19:14Does Datsun make a truck?
- 1:19:15Yep, the perfect pickup.
- 1:19:16Little hustler.
- 1:19:17America's best-selling import truck.
- 1:19:18Listen, I've got to take another call.
- 1:19:19Anything else?
- 1:19:20Yeah, is my husband with you?
- 1:19:21Be sure to see the full line of Datsuns at Auto Expo Sports Arena now through June the
- 1:19:326th.
- 1:19:43Angels 2 Washington 1 into the seventh inning and more play.
- 1:19:46Here's Don.
- 1:19:47All right, Rich.
- 1:19:48Sandy Alomar leads it off.
- 1:19:49Sandy one for two and a swig and a miss onto McLean.
- 1:19:50McLean fastball for strike one.
- 1:19:51So McLean picking up and pitching strength as he has moved along in this game.
- 1:19:56And these two men just complete the pitching matchup just as it was billed for this evening's
- 1:20:04game with the Angels leading 2-1 a very fast game.
- 1:20:06A shot out of the left center field.
- 1:20:08Maddox is there, however, and just makes a couple of easy steps off to his right to handle
- 1:20:13the line drive off the bat of Alomar.
- 1:20:14So one down.
- 1:20:15That will bring up Angel pitcher Clyde Wright.
- 1:20:18Clyde on a humid evening taking the towel wiping away some of the perspiration.
- 1:20:22About ready to get up and make his move toward the plate.
- 1:20:26He'll be followed by Roger Repose.
- 1:20:29Said we'd have a little fog in the Washington area this evening and apparently that's what
- 1:20:40we have.
- 1:20:41Some of it drips into Kennedy Memorial Stadium.
- 1:20:44Next delivery outside of the letters for ball one.
- 1:20:49And the Anacostia River only a few steps away from this ballpark.
- 1:20:52One-oh delivery fastball high and tight ball two, two and oh.
- 1:20:55Clyde with the base hit and an RBI on the second.
- 1:20:58And the most important one for the Angels that's Jack Stevenson across and that's the
- 1:21:02run the Angels lead by right now.
- 1:21:04Next delivery curve ball high ball three.
- 1:21:06McLean a little bit upset with plate umpire Larry Knapp.
- 1:21:09So Denny did not immediately accept the return throw from Casanova.
- 1:21:12He just spun around and turned his back toward home plate.
- 1:21:16Working back with a three nothing pitch through this high ball four.
- 1:21:18So Clyde is on and the batter will be Roger Repose.
- 1:21:23Earlier in the season and I think it was at County Stadium in Milwaukee when Denny had
- 1:21:29a no hitter going in.
- 1:21:30About five and then he got into a verbal sparring match with a plate umpire on a couple of calls
- 1:21:38and he also gave up a few base hits in the inning.
- 1:21:41And the next thing he knew he had given up four runs in the inning and then he had some
- 1:21:44additional words and Lane was tossed out on the spot.
- 1:21:46But he had a no hitter going for five innings.
- 1:21:48Repose drives it foul up on the screen for strike one.
- 1:21:56And Denny a guy with a kind of an interesting boiling point.
- 1:21:59You don't know whether to read it low or read it high.
- 1:22:03It depends upon the day.
- 1:22:08Repose has gone 0 for 3 against him.
- 1:22:11Popped up grounded out and Clyde shouted left field.
- 1:22:13Fast ball high and tight one and one.
- 1:22:16Alex Johnson in the on deck area.
- 1:22:21So the Angels try to pick up something additional for Clyde Wright and Clyde starting it off
- 1:22:26here with one out and the base on balls.
- 1:22:28They claim for the one one pitch.
- 1:22:30Off speed curve a little bit blow ball too two and one.
- 1:22:33And they're a pitch that was in a questionable period and McLean making a motion to Larry
- 1:22:37Knapp as Odo indicated you feel it was low and Knapp indicates I didn't only feel it
- 1:22:45was low I saw that it was low.
- 1:22:47Here's that fastball that's thinking fastball and repose right over the top on the pitch
- 1:22:50and the count is two and two.
- 1:22:57Frank Howard flying behind Clyde Wright at first base.
- 1:23:01Will the left hander repose up and hard rather close to the shot.
- 1:23:04Two to delivery and repose with a slugging of this fastball here.
- 1:23:08So reposes 0 for 4 against McLean and that will bring along Alex Johnson.
- 1:23:13McLean is really something.
- 1:23:17You watch him pitch and you think that all of a sudden he's hit a flat spot that it looks
- 1:23:25as though he doesn't have much in the way of stuff.
- 1:23:27And then he turns right around and when it's needed then he turns it on.
- 1:23:30In this case he delivered two fastballs a thinking fastball and came up and reposed
- 1:23:36with the next one and got him on strikes with good quick stuff.
- 1:23:40Here's Alex Johnson the pitch AJ takes a fastball close ball one.
- 1:23:45Alex one for two he started out at two fifty eight he walked in the first and then came
- 1:23:48the base hit in the third and a fly ball to center field in the fifth inning.
- 1:23:53Alex with a swing and a miss here.
- 1:23:54This looks like a slider thrown by McLean he threw it hard to count one and one.
- 1:23:58And he does possess a very good slider.
- 1:24:04Now we have Billy Gogolewski and Joe Grisenda throwing at the bullpen for Washington.
- 1:24:08A swing and a miss here and again he threw some heat to count one and two.
- 1:24:18Ball on strike two on AJ.
- 1:24:20The Gussie in the on deck area wondering if he will have a chance here on the seventh
- 1:24:26inning with two away the pitch.
- 1:24:28Alex almost hit with it.
- 1:24:29In fact I guess it did it got him.
- 1:24:31Tried to jump away from it but it caught the uniform.
- 1:24:33So Alex tosses the bat aside and winders up the line.
- 1:24:37Apparently they've got him on the left forearm.
- 1:24:40Left forearm or left wrist.
- 1:24:42So Alex now moving to first base and on to second base goes wide right and for Gussie
- 1:24:46will have a chance.
- 1:24:49Jim tonight 0 for 3 McLean has been able to handle him well.
- 1:24:58He fouled him out to Casanova got him on a double play and then in the fifth inning struck
- 1:25:03him out.
- 1:25:04Two down the pitch to Gussie.
- 1:25:05Low and away with it ball one.
- 1:25:09And again McLean fire this one hard to Gussie but missed the target.
- 1:25:17And right at second Alex Johnson with an enormously long lead at first.
- 1:25:21The pitch slider low outside 2 and 0.
- 1:25:25So then he just huffs and puffs.
- 1:25:29Little more on the mound as he has worked behind for Gussie to nothing.
- 1:25:35Ready and the delivery.
- 1:25:37Breaking ball a little low with it and now McLean hollering in to Larry Knapp about the
- 1:25:40call and so from long range he and Knapp with a word exchange and the count is 3 and nothing.
- 1:25:46Of course so frequently the Angels against McLean we have seen this happen.
- 1:25:513 nothing pitch and Knapp says you missed with that one ball four so the Angels have
- 1:25:55the bases loaded two away.
- 1:26:02And he's history against the Angels and it's held true with other teams but and now they
- 1:26:06have a little quiet down period of the mound as Sid Hudson comes out and Frank Howard goes
- 1:26:12out and Paul Casanova has already gone out.
- 1:26:15And he has already been the first to at nine he said he looked don't get yourself all upset
- 1:26:19because I say I don't know exactly what has occurred against other things but as long
- 1:26:23as McLean has been in this league and pitching against the Angels it's been that way even
- 1:26:28though he in his overall is one and lost record against the California club shows a plus not
- 1:26:32much of a plus however but so frequently he has managed to get himself upset because of
- 1:26:37the man working behind the plate things wouldn't go right for him in a couple of pitches and
- 1:26:41perhaps the workman that he is of the craftsman that he is he feels in a very deserved way
- 1:26:47he should get these pitches but in the case of Larry and a plattery saying no on the fourth
- 1:26:51of every major for Gussie so Jim is the man who loves the bases and the bases have become
- 1:26:57loaded because of two walks and a hit back from the batter Jim Spencer and Jim is one
- 1:27:03for three.
- 1:27:04So the Angels with a big chance here in the seventh inning despite the two outs deep in
- 1:27:11the right side Howard and Cullen runners awaited their leads and the pitch by McLean and spent
- 1:27:17takes the fastball high ball one and there was a pitch he couldn't question Larry Knapp
- 1:27:22about his decision on that particular delivery well inside the Spencer and riding high pops
- 1:27:30it up again and the one delivery and spent hits the fly ball it's going to be shallow
- 1:27:34and right field Cullen is going out for it the second baseman backs out under it and
- 1:27:37takes care of it and the Angels leave the bases loaded.
- 1:27:41For the Californians then no runs no hits no errors three men left and the score at the
- 1:27:46end of the top of the seventh the Angels two and Washington one.
- 1:27:50You know to keep your car's engine running young it's important to change the oil regularly

- 1:28:54We move along now to the last half of the Sabbath inning and we're going to pause right
- 1:28:57here and allow KPRO and Stanford, Latino and Riverside and all of our network stations
- 1:29:01to identify themselves this is the angels radio network you're listening to the big
- 1:29:06fifteen ten command radio KMND Mesa's own it's one minute after six in Mesa.
- 1:29:25The last of the seven and it comes after Paul Casanova and Don works and I'd ride as Texas
- 1:29:40Senators on four hits and push them aside in order of the fifth inning and again in
- 1:29:44the sex wind and the pitch on the way to the right hander Casanova and it's outside ball
- 1:29:49one and another with a fly ball that's a soft fly ball single down the right field line
- 1:29:56in the fourth inning right back with a one nothing pitch Casanova's bounce off the fast
- 1:30:04ball and it's one and one single by Elliott Maddox in the first inning it was an infield
- 1:30:10hit by Toby Harrah the third single by Frank Howard in the third and the fly ball single
- 1:30:14by the angels and Washington played an extremely close way here late in the game.
- 1:30:30The angels have an update tomorrow and will travel tomorrow morning on the Boston ready
- 1:30:51themselves for that weekend series one to deliver his card he came around Casanova stumbled
- 1:30:55across the plate in pursuit of this pitch and trying to hold his sling and couldn't
- 1:30:59get it.
- 1:31:00Got a breaking ball by Clyde Wright that he kept down to Casanova get him on strike covering
- 1:31:04up third baseman Don word replied right that is his third strikeout word over to tonight
- 1:31:10grounded a short and then on a good feeling play by Jim Spencer Jim got him on his top
- 1:31:15foul in the fourth inning.
- 1:31:18Right pitch curve and he whacks this one toward short two big hops to forgo the young like
- 1:31:28bro the first base for the up downward is gone.
- 1:31:31That'll bring up second baseman Tim Collins.
- 1:31:34It appears that either the natives are getting restless or there's a train traveling down
- 1:31:52the other cost of the river that it might be a little some of the preliminary sounds
- 1:31:56to storm here in the Washington area.
- 1:31:58Over the column fastball over the inside edge first strike on one sounds that type of like
- 1:32:05some rolling thunder in the background and thunder showers scattered under showers expected
- 1:32:10tonight one strike over and get it turned this over and throws it long away one and
- 1:32:14one.
- 1:32:17So what a hookup it is then five right against Danny McLean one and one right handed Tim
- 1:32:27Collins.
- 1:32:28It is telling takes a fastball for a strike to run that right down through there.
- 1:32:34Oh and after grounding out to McMullen and then the good feeling play by both been involved
- 1:32:41catcher John Stevenson and Jim Spencer on one that he chopped out in front of the plate
- 1:32:45in the fourth inning one two offering by Clyde with two down and nobody on curve broken background
- 1:32:50ball is short for Gussie Hamilton there there's the throw and it's there in time the right
- 1:32:55has him in order again for the third inning in a row with nothing across the score at
- 1:32:59the end of seven angels to Washington one.
- 1:33:06A.
- 1:33:32The Budweiser challenge. Quote, in brewing bud, our choice is to go all the way. We hope
- 1:33:52beer matters enough to you.
- 1:33:53All right, down the first pitch to Ken McMullen is high and inside with a fastball, ball one.
- 1:33:58Mack in the ball game has grounded hard to short, walked and grounded to third, 0 for
- 1:34:02McClain.
- 1:34:03The angels two runs, eight hits. Washington one run, four hits. The pitch, wider outside,
- 1:34:082 and 0. And they're bowling upstairs now. A lot of rumbles and a lightning spark starts
- 1:34:14to flash in the sky overhead. The pitch, check swing roller that is gloved, backhanded by
- 1:34:20McClain on his knees. He throws the first to the out. McClain able to skid to his right
- 1:34:26and backhand the ball and then just turn on his knees and throw to Howard for the out.
- 1:34:31Tony Canegliero, a couple of infield hits and three at bat. There was rain forecast,
- 1:34:39thundershowers for tonight. And unless they're missing to the south or north, it appears
- 1:34:45that we're bound to have some rain before this ball game is over despite the fact that
- 1:34:49it's moving along at a very fast pace. Just a little over an hour and a half old and we're
- 1:34:53in the eighth inning with one and a half. Tony C, 2 for 3. Here's the pitch, swung on
- 1:34:58and mid. Canegliero with an infield hit with one out in the second. Then Stevenson followed
- 1:35:02with a single. Alomar singled one run in and then Wright singled in the second. That's
- 1:35:06the ball game as far as the angels are concerned. Four straight base hit. On Wright's singles
- 1:35:14with runners at third and second, Alomar was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Larry
- 1:35:18Bittner. John Stevenson next. Quiet right is retired 11 men in the row and since the third
- 1:35:32inning, Denny McLean has allowed only two base hits although the angels loaded the bases
- 1:35:36on two walks and a hit batsman in the seventh. But Spencer popped up in the inning. High
- 1:35:40and away with a hard slider, one and two to Tony C. Canegliero understandably very pleased
- 1:35:48about hitting back to Boston to see all of his family and friends over the weekend. One,
- 1:35:52two, pitch, swung on and here comes the rain and it's coming down in sheets. There wasn't
- 1:35:56that first drizzle. It's just all of a sudden the sky is open and all the players and umpires
- 1:36:02are running for cover. Oh my. Incredible. There was not the first drop and all of a
- 1:36:10sudden it was raining a torrential downpour. The fans caught down in the lower box seats.
- 1:36:17They're scrambling up the aisles but many of them will be soaking to their skin before
- 1:36:22they make it underneath the overhang. Incredibly quick shower. The ground crew trying to get
- 1:36:31the tarp out onto the field as the rain just swept in. I think one other time in here in
- 1:36:40Washington it rained just like this with no advance warning at all. There wasn't that
- 1:36:44preliminary drizzle and a few drops here and there to warn of it. It's storm but this time
- 1:36:52it's just one moment dry. The next moment as hard as you'd ever want to see it rain.
- 1:36:58The tarp now is being moved out across second base area in the outfield and they'll try
- 1:37:04to drag that out over the infield. Already it's rained so hard there are puddles forming
- 1:37:08on the infield earth. That's how hard it rained in so short a time. 28th inning with Tony
- 1:37:16Canigliaro up and they got one ball and two strikes. The heavens have begun to cry and
- 1:37:23they are crying big tears. And the lightning cracking all around and the thunder rolling
- 1:37:29and a through summer storm in Washington D.C. The tarp has covered the second base side
- 1:37:37of the infield but the third base and shortstop areas remain uncovered. And now men huddling
- 1:37:45as hard as they can on this ground screw to try to get the cover. They have pulled it
- 1:37:52across the mound area and now to the third base foul line. These are the kinds of storms
- 1:37:56usually that end as quickly as they begin. Lightning and thunder close by. That one was
- 1:38:04a near hit. That was a giant sycamore tree that fell that day. This is a section of the
- 1:38:13country. I don't know whether men I guess refer to them in different ways across the
- 1:38:20country but it's really a squall is what it amounts to. And when they indicated the scattered
- 1:38:25thunderstorms, thundershowers for the season this being the first one that we have experienced
- 1:38:31and it may possibly look up before July. Look at that folks. That ran straight down to the
- 1:38:37bridge over the river. And judging from the time interval it had to be close.
- 1:38:44Hays to join us late. Here's the story of the ball game. In the first inning the Senators
- 1:38:50got their only runoff starter Klein right. Here are the leadoff man walk. Elliott Maddux
- 1:38:56followed with a single to right and Howard walked below the bases. With the bases loaded
- 1:38:59knowing how the angels tried to pick Maddux off second base but the pro hit Maddux, give
- 1:39:03it away and Harris scored from third. That's the only run. The angels took the lead in
- 1:39:08the second after McClellan smashed Lowhopper to short and was thrown out. To Nick Lear
- 1:39:14albeit out a hit out the middle. Stevenson single to center. Alomar drove in one run
- 1:39:20with a single to right center and Klein right single to right field got in the other. A
- 1:39:24two to one ball game. Since the second the pitching of Ryan and McLean negating any offensive
- 1:39:30thrust by a heather club although the angels hit out the bases loaded two outs in the seventh
- 1:39:34on a couple of walks and a hit batsman when Spencer popped out. And for the Senators their
- 1:39:39only serious threat came the third an infield hit but then the double play by Maddux and
- 1:39:43Howard singled and Billings made it now to end it. Since then Ryan has allowed one hit
- 1:39:47and he is retired the last eleven men in a row and it is raining very very hard at Kennedy
- 1:39:54Stadium in Washington. The field is now covered but we're going to have a considerable delay.
- 1:39:59It is out of the bench. Washington dugout before the game with Ted Williams and one
- 1:40:04of the Washington Stadium police sergeants came over and said and Williams turned him
- 1:40:09said what about the forecast for tonight. The sergeant said it will not rain tonight
- 1:40:12because the wind is coming from the wrong direction. So Ted turned to me and he said
- 1:40:16well that takes care of it. And I said there's only one thing about it yet. I think he's
- 1:40:20the same police sergeant when we were back here in the television date last year that
- 1:40:27we had the same situation and this could have been the same man and said oh don't worry.
- 1:40:32No no rain for today's game. And all of a sudden we were inundated here. In fact both
- 1:40:36dugouts were flooded on that occasion. So we will warn all of our network stations now
- 1:40:43to get ready to fill on a local basis. But first of all a reminder for all of you about
- 1:40:48your plans for the Fourth of July and announced the time to make your reservations for another
- 1:40:52fireworks extravaganza. We're having one of nature's best here tonight. But this one
- 1:40:57will be at Anaheim Stadium following the Angels 6 p.m. game with the division leading Oakland
- 1:41:01A's and last year's show was a sellout. So we suggest that you obtain your tickets early.
- 1:41:06Enjoy both events game and fireworks at the regular game price. So no change in the price
- 1:41:12cost and tickets are on sale now. The Anaheim Stadium box office open nine to five daily
- 1:41:17at Mutual and Liberty Agencies and at UC Banks in Orange County. And to give our stations
- 1:41:24some additional time we'll check over the scoreboard. The Trites will be at Minnesota
- 1:41:27tonight. Cleveland plays at Milwaukee. Baltimore at Chicago. And today the Yankees defeated
- 1:41:31Boston 6-1. Stan Bonson the winner and Sonny Siebert losing his first after a 9-0 record.
- 1:41:37And Bobby Mercer hit Homer's numbers 9 and 10. St. Louis at Pittsburgh tonight. First
- 1:41:42game of two Cubs at Cincinnati. The Cubs defeated Cincinnati 6-3. The win to hands.
- 1:41:47The loss to Wilcox. Banks hit his first homer. That came in the seventh with two on. May
- 1:41:51had his tenth in the ninth with nobody on. So that is a first to two. Houston leads Atlanta
- 1:41:561-0 at the end of five. Wilson against Reed. Philadelphia will be at San Diego. Montreal
- 1:42:01to the Dodgers play in Los Angeles. And today at Candlestick the Mets beat San Francisco
- 1:42:055-2. Williams the winner 1-1. And Marischal the loser 8-3. And Chansky hit a base and
- 1:42:11sent the homer in the eighth inning. Rain still driving down here at Kennedy Memorial
- 1:42:15Stadium. And all we can do now is just settle back and wait. Last night a power failure
- 1:42:20for some 32 minutes. So we'll see what sort of a rain delay we have this evening and if
- 1:42:26they are able to continue the game at all. As it stands right now the Angels lead at
- 1:42:302-1. And they have two runs, eight hits, one error. And Washington one run, four hits and
- 1:42:36no errors. So that's about all the information we can give you from Washington. Dick Nelson
- 1:42:40will keep in check with you along the network line and keep you posted as to the way the
- 1:42:45weather goes here in Washington D.C. So that's it for the moment. This is the Angels Radio
- 1:42:50Network. Just minutes ago from Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington, Larry Knapp, the senior
- 1:42:59umpire of this crew came out and they took one look at things and said let's forget it
- 1:43:03for the night. Earlier he had come out with one of his fellow umpires. They pulled the
- 1:43:06tarp halfway off the infield and at that time Knapp gave an indication the infield was still
- 1:43:11in good shape. So they were just going to say that perhaps they could take the tarp
- 1:43:15off and we could continue this one. Now the outfield has to be quite a quagmire. And then
- 1:43:19with the infield, with the tarp pulled halfway off all of a sudden the start of the rain
- 1:43:23harder. Now it's let up again and it seems to be just a very fine drizzle. But you have
- 1:43:27to consider the outfield as well and it's of course with a shadow out there. The indication
- 1:43:33to the automobile that brings in pitchers from the bullpen areas and the tracks being
- 1:43:37left and muddy tracks indeed as he works around the warning path itself and now goes out through
- 1:43:43the gate in the right field corner. So Larry Knapp, the senior man behind the plate has
- 1:43:47said let's forget it and the Angels win it in the eighth inning as the rains came. So
- 1:43:51Jupiter Pluvius has provided an Angel victory and perhaps this is what the California club
- 1:43:56needs to get things rolling in the proper way as Clyde Wright picks up his fifth win
- 1:44:00against four defeats. The Angels win it 2-1 with two runs, eight hits, one error and eight
- 1:44:04men left. Washington one run, four hits, no errors. They have stranded four men and it
- 1:44:09took an hour and 37 minutes of game time. Denny McLean, the loser and Denny was pacing
- 1:44:14up and down and the Washington dugout earlier as the rain continued to fall and McLean now
- 1:44:20winds up with his ninth loss against four victories. And the attendance on this rainy
- 1:44:24night, 3,606. We'll have to have Clyde Wright, the winning pitcher on Angel Report as our
- 1:44:29guest and that will follow in just a moment.
