- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the Coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning. What do you do when you are
- 0:32under pressure to take care of something that was not
- 0:37necessarily your fault? This happens a lot in families,
- 0:41I mean a real lot in families. And it is inexplicable as to why
- 0:49things fall on certain people's shoulders over others.
- 0:52But it happens so often this time of the year, this stuff
- 0:56starts to show up because of who's going to go somewhere for
- 0:59the holidays, who's going to host a holiday, who's going to
- 1:03be responsible. And it is a very common
- 1:08conversation that I end up in and often times and not good,
- 1:16bad or indifferent parents are flawed people.
- 1:19And it's really important to remember this.
- 1:21And if we are a parent, we are flawed.
- 1:23I can personally sit here and say to you, there is no question
- 1:26in my mind that I have flaws and I have big flaws and I try
- 1:31really hard to not put them on people.
- 1:34I try hard not to put my rules on people because it's not fair
- 1:38to them. Just like my need to have a
- 1:40very, very clean, orderly environment around me in my
- 1:44home. Some people would sit there and
- 1:45go, oh, she's OCD. I'm not OCDI just have really
- 1:49high standards and I don't put them on other people.
- 1:52I, I pick it up. They have responsibilities that
- 1:56are basic normal. Hey, put your clothes in the
- 1:58laundry. Hey, don't leave food out.
- 2:00Hey, do this, they, they, they know clearing up, clear up your
- 2:03plates, do all that. But the higher crazy stuff that
- 2:06I feel is my standards, I don't put that on them.
- 2:09And I've worked hard to not do that because it used to drive me
- 2:13crazy. But once I recognized my driver
- 2:16as my bus, all of that, I'm able to manage that.
- 2:19So this time of year, it tends to happen.
- 2:22Now, if you've got siblings, and many of us do, I don't.
- 2:27But if you do have siblings, this comes up with parents a lot
- 2:31where they pressure one child and doesn't matter how old this
- 2:36child is. So if you are a 55 year old
- 2:38child and I'm talking to you, if you're pressured by your
- 2:43parents, it doesn't matter if your parents are 90, they will
- 2:46do it. They will still do it because
- 2:48they are still in that parental role and they don't recognize
- 2:53that things don't change over time for them, that they, they
- 2:56have to actually work at that change.
- 2:59So there is pressure that's put on.
- 3:01So between, you know, oh, you are not doing things, your
- 3:05brother needs help. I, I can't tell you how many
- 3:07times I hear this where a client who's a very successful person
- 3:12will say, my parents are putting me under pressure to help my
- 3:15sister or my brother again. And I'm not doing it.
- 3:18I'm just not doing it. I've done it my whole life and
- 3:20I'm not doing it. This happens every time I help
- 3:23that it doesn't change anything. And it and the story goes on and
- 3:27on and on and on. You as an adult are not
- 3:31responsible for your siblings outcomes.
- 3:34And you as an adult are not responsible for your siblings
- 3:37behavior. And you as an adult are not
- 3:40responsible to heal the wounds of that other person.
- 3:44That other person is responsible.
- 3:46You as a child are not responsible for it.
- 3:49If you are listening to this and you happen to be a teenager,
- 3:53you're not responsible for what your sibling is doing.
- 3:56You're just not. That was your parents choice to
- 3:59let these things happen, not yours.
- 4:01And you should not be made responsible for it.
- 4:04But it happens. And parents say, oh, you know,
- 4:07well, you're you're the good one.
- 4:09You know, in their head they're like, oh, well, this person's
- 4:12OK. So you take up the slack.
- 4:14It's no different than being in that group of science.
- 4:17You know, you're in the science lab and they put partner you up
- 4:21with someone who's less qualified to be in a group of
- 4:25high performers because they want that person to rise to the
- 4:28occasion. But they don't rise to the
- 4:30occasion. Typically what happens is they
- 4:33let the people who are dominant and skilled take over and they
- 4:37sit there and they do nothing to participate in their own rescue.
- 4:40And that's the key to this whole thing.
- 4:42He people have to participate in their own rescue.
- 4:46The person has to rise to the occasion and want to.
- 4:49And when they demonstrate that they don't, sure, we should give
- 4:53everybody a chance, but when they demonstrate that they don't
- 4:56want to rise to the occasion, please recognize it is not your
- 4:59responsibility. And going into this season, it
- 5:02is not your responsibility either.
- 5:05You must protect yourself and your own energy from giving it
- 5:09away to people who do not want it.
- 5:12If they did, they would rise to the occasion.
- 5:15They would do the right things. But they don't and they
- 5:18demonstrate it. So remember the rule.
- 5:21It is not your responsibility for other another person and it
- 5:26is not your responsibility to fix the family.
- 5:29All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 5:32will see you tomorrow. Bye.
