- 1:00Speaker 2: Slash news.
- 1:00Speaker 1: I'm Dann slash news slash news. Okay, Ken Brockman, Yeah,
- 1:06Speaker 1: I'm guy. Yeah. We do a little more frequently than annually. No,
- 1:11Speaker 1: every month we dive deep into that mail bag, pull

- 1:17Speaker 1: So we're doing that today. A bit of news and

- 1:26Speaker 2: you can look at for our posts in the Patreon
- 1:27Speaker 2: group on Facebook and on discord as well. But before
- 1:31Speaker 2: we get into your mailbag questions, there's some news stories
- 1:34Speaker 2: of breaking the Internet at the moment, so we.
- 1:37Speaker 1: All know the internets are broken again.
- 1:39Speaker 2: It's always breaking, isn't it.
- 1:40Speaker 1: It seems very flimsy.
- 1:42Speaker 2: So the thing is, we always talk about how the
- 1:45Speaker 2: Simpsons predict everything, right, I think as a collective we
- 1:49Speaker 2: can sort of just put that to bed, please. It
- 1:51Speaker 2: feels like the only websites that do it now are
- 1:53Speaker 2: like you know your nine mbercn's that kind of thing,
- 1:55Speaker 2: just trying to get a bit of clickbait. People are
- 1:57Speaker 2: still clicking it, so, you know what, more power to them.
- 1:59Speaker 1: There are two there are two types of outlets and
- 2:01Speaker 1: two types of people that will do this. One is
- 2:04Speaker 1: Normi's news sites just mentions like these people were not
- 2:08Speaker 1: thinking about the Simpsons twenty four to seven. But every
- 2:10Speaker 1: once in a while something will come was like, hey,
- 2:12Speaker 1: you know that event that happened in the world, Well,
- 2:14Speaker 1: there's cartoons show that your kids really love as predicted that.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Now back to you, Tom. And the other one is grifters.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Now this one here is what we call a grifter.
- 2:26Speaker 2: So what annoys me is that, now I say news websites,
- 2:29Speaker 2: I wouldn't really call them incredible news. I'm looking at
- 2:32Speaker 2: you Uni Lad whatever they called right and Lad Bible
- 2:35Speaker 2: and those kinds of things. But basically they're sharing this
- 2:38Speaker 2: talking about at the moment, this Trump video that's going
- 2:41Speaker 2: around on TikTok right about the Simpsons predicting Donald Trump's death. Now,
- 2:46Speaker 2: this one comes from unilaed Tech and the headline says
- 2:49Speaker 2: truth behind viral claim that Trump could die on March fourteenth,
- 2:52Speaker 2: following Simpson's prediction.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Now, you sent this to me first morning as we
- 2:57Speaker 1: were before we recorded. There's like wow, I check this
- 2:59Speaker 1: out as a wow chick this No, you were not
- 3:02Speaker 1: doing as you were, Wow, check this out? Dar. No,
- 3:05Speaker 1: you know, mate, I'm kind of a dumbass. You know,
- 3:08Speaker 1: there are sing there are things that will escape my views.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not especially gullible, but there are some
- 3:14Speaker 1: things of like oh wow, interesting hmm. I'm trying to
- 3:17Speaker 1: see both sides of that. This is blatantly fake? Is
- 3:20Speaker 1: it not even blatantly fake? This is just what is this?
- 3:23Speaker 2: So it's a Simpsons Predict Simpsons to predict on TikTok
- 3:27Speaker 2: Simptons Predict Future.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Is the is the user Simpson's Predict Future one, which
- 3:33Speaker 1: means it's got multiple account? Yes, yes, probably Simpsons Predict
- 3:39Speaker 1: Simpson's Predict Future eight out there. This person is churning
- 3:42Speaker 1: out this dreadful, dreadful nonsense.
- 3:45Speaker 2: As the thing is, we're laughing at him, we're mocking him.
- 3:48Speaker 2: This guy has one hundred This account has one hundred
- 3:51Speaker 2: and forty thousand followers. This video has seven million views.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Yeah, that made me want to break shit. Oh it
- 3:57Speaker 1: makes me so sad. So what's happening?
- 3:59Speaker 2: Is this person male fair, not sure who it is,
- 4:02Speaker 2: is going into AI.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I think we can call it an it.
- 4:04Speaker 2: I think it's not really Yeah, it's if you've got
- 4:07Speaker 2: the AI Donald Trump predicted, it's got the AI voice, right.
- 4:10Speaker 2: So basically all they're doing is they're entering stuff into
- 4:12Speaker 2: a prompt and it's letting AI do the work. Hey,
- 4:14Speaker 2: it's working for them. Fucking news websites are going crazy
- 4:18Speaker 2: with it. But the video is has a predicted. Have
- 4:20Speaker 2: they predicted a Trump's death. The AI footage that you're
- 4:23Speaker 2: seeing in this, they're saying that, they're claiming it's an
- 4:25Speaker 2: unaired Simpsons episode, right, that predicted Donald Trump's death, and
- 4:29Speaker 2: he doesn't want to out right.
- 4:30Speaker 1: It looks nothing like a Simpsons episode.
- 4:33Speaker 2: This one scene has like twelve different homers, one with
- 4:36Speaker 2: a missing I and missing hands.
- 4:38Speaker 1: It's clearly all AI. How is anyone resharing this claiming
- 4:42Speaker 1: even given this the time of day, Even Unilad or
- 4:45Speaker 1: lad Bible or whatever. I mean, sometimes they have some
- 4:48Speaker 1: halfway decent stuff or stuff that's semi amusing. This is
- 4:51Speaker 1: all empty calorie slop nonsense. Folks, Uh do yourselves the
- 4:56Speaker 1: perpetual favor and just avoid it.
- 4:58Speaker 2: The thing is, though, I feel like right now I'm
- 5:02Speaker 2: Grandpa Simpson with the I used to be with it,
- 5:05Speaker 2: but they've changed what it was. This is now it
- 5:07Speaker 2: it's now weird and scary to me.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Well, it's the thing. It's not just weird and scary
- 5:11Speaker 1: to you, it's weird and scary to just about everybody.
- 5:14Speaker 1: I mean, anybody with a functioning brainstemer is looking at this, going, eh,
- 5:19Speaker 1: what's going on? Yeah? That doesn't even look real.
- 5:22Speaker 2: The thing is though, right, the latest one says could
- 5:25Speaker 2: die on fourteenth of March. Right, but if he go back,
- 5:28Speaker 2: he did one last week, there's the twenty eeth of February,
- 5:30Speaker 2: two weeks ago. There's one that says the twentieth of February.
- 5:33Speaker 2: He just posts the same fucking video every single week
- 5:36Speaker 2: with a different date, and people are re sharing and
- 5:40Speaker 2: buying into it and be following.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Be alert people, Yeah, this is this is a real one.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Maybe people like this. Maybe I'm the crazy one. Maybe
- 5:48Speaker 2: maybe I should be. I'm the old fund daddy shaving,
- 5:50Speaker 2: shaking my fist at the cloud. I'm sitting here, well
- 5:53Speaker 2: in my world. You know, we're sitting here, you know,
- 5:55Speaker 2: we reviewing the Simpsons with as much credibility as possible.
- 5:57Speaker 2: We're talking to people that worked on the show. We're
- 5:59Speaker 2: doing our to just keep the Simpsons torch flame, you know, alive. Right, Well,
- 6:03Speaker 2: not just keep the Simpsons flamelight, but keep the look.
- 6:07Speaker 2: I'm not going to say that we're the up Rachelon
- 6:09Speaker 2: of critical discourse here, but I mean everything that you're
- 6:11Speaker 2: hearing from your pal's Danel and Guy is coming from
- 6:14Speaker 2: the minds of Daniel and Guy. When we're I mean,
- 6:17Speaker 2: we're not typing in prompt to AI, and we're not
- 6:19Speaker 2: creating computer generated content or anything like that. All those
- 6:23Speaker 2: clips you see on social media, I whacking those through
- 6:26Speaker 2: an AI generator. But Open's clips share the Open's clip,
- 6:28Speaker 2: they do good work. They people use them for their
- 6:30Speaker 2: podcast clips. I make all the clips myself to make
- 6:33Speaker 2: sure they look the best they can be. I might
- 6:35Speaker 2: be crazy for doing so, but I prefer to make
- 6:37Speaker 2: it to myself.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Yeah, there's always going to and there's always going to
- 6:40Speaker 1: be a market. Look look at that. Look at these pages.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I already looked at these, Dan Could Trump die thirtieth
- 6:45Speaker 2: of January? Could Trump die the twentieth of January?
- 6:47Speaker 1: It does it every single week. The same photos. Stop
- 6:50Speaker 1: showing this to me. I don't want to see it.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Same videos every single week, just changes the date and
- 6:54Speaker 2: people are resharing it.
- 6:56Speaker 1: What is going on?
- 6:58Speaker 2: No, the Simpsons did not predict Trump's eventual death on
- 7:01Speaker 2: March fourteenth, because you know what's gonna happen next week.
- 7:02Speaker 2: There'll be another video that says March twenty first, correct,
- 7:05Speaker 2: Holy smokes.
- 7:07Speaker 1: So look, we're doing a public service announcement for you today, folks.
- 7:11Speaker 1: It's avoid accounts like this if they come up in
- 7:14Speaker 1: your feed, just you know, there's gotta be some button
- 7:16Speaker 1: on TikTok or insider or whatever. They just says, I
- 7:18Speaker 1: don't want to see anything more like this that hit
- 7:21Speaker 1: that button.
- 7:21Speaker 2: The people who watch this and re share this stuff, though,
- 7:23Speaker 2: don't think they're Simpsons fans. I just think they're just
- 7:25Speaker 2: people that just like ai slop. It's just it's just
- 7:27Speaker 2: people who are just.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Who likes a slop. People do, clearly, it's one hundred
- 7:31Speaker 1: and forty thousand of them right now. Igue the feeling
- 7:33Speaker 1: that's spots, spots you reckon I to get to add credibility, Yes, yeah,
- 7:36Speaker 1: potentially that's a good I think they have purchase bots
- 7:39Speaker 1: from Russia or Pakisa rush where yeah, okay, to rush
- 7:43Speaker 1: up the credibility from RUSSI up, But to rush up yes, yes, yes,
- 7:48Speaker 1: but yes no, yes no.
- 7:49Speaker 2: The Simpsons did not will not predict the death of
- 7:52Speaker 2: Donald Trump.
- 7:53Speaker 1: They we don't do that. Yeah, and predict future one
- 7:56Speaker 1: is let's look up Simpsons predicted future two. Here's the thing, though,
- 8:02Speaker 1: in some homemade recording studio somewhere in the world, there's
- 8:07Speaker 1: probably some like Junior Dando who is actually the person
- 8:09Speaker 1: behind Sims's predict one going, I just want to be
- 8:12Speaker 1: part of the conversation. I'm just like you. Why am
- 8:17Speaker 1: I giving him that accent? Apologies to that person just
- 8:20Speaker 1: because he's different.
- 8:22Speaker 2: So there is no Simpson's predict future, no number There
- 8:25Speaker 2: is no number two. For some reason, He's added one
- 8:28Speaker 2: in there, like it just makes it seem even worse.
- 8:30Speaker 1: No, no, oh sorry, I could, I could do something. Very
- 8:34Speaker 1: is number one. I don't do a borrowed voice because
- 8:38Speaker 1: that's you know, you can get away with it. Yeah,
- 8:40Speaker 1: it seems a brittany fulture number one.
- 8:42Speaker 2: So yeah, Simpson's Predictions for twenty twenty five two point
- 8:44Speaker 2: one million views. This guy's been doing his videos for
- 8:46Speaker 2: a long time and it's working for him. More credit
- 8:49Speaker 2: to him. You know people are watching this ship? Well yeah,
- 8:52Speaker 2: I think a lot of people seem to be watching
- 8:53Speaker 2: this shit out of pure curiosity.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Though, yes, that's the thing. I mean, they're But the
- 8:58Speaker 1: problem is if you go on watching it and resharing it.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I know that's the terrible thing. But if you go
- 9:02Speaker 1: on YouTube, for instance, Yeah, if you go into like
- 9:05Speaker 1: you're typing movie trailers, new movie trailers or whatever, and
- 9:07Speaker 1: you will find a lot of yeah AI generated slop
- 9:12Speaker 1: for like, hey, we've got the Avengers doomsday trailers like
- 9:16Speaker 1: you No, you don't. No, you typed a few prompts
- 9:19Speaker 1: in give me rober Danney Jr. As Doctor Doom saying
- 9:23Speaker 1: Avengers you will die?
- 9:25Speaker 3: Whoa what?
- 9:27Speaker 1: And you know there were chumps out there who were like,
- 9:30Speaker 1: holy moly, I got the first Avengers first comment. What
- 9:36Speaker 1: ships me?
- 9:37Speaker 2: As though, places like Unilatter right, they give this stuff
- 9:40Speaker 2: the time of day purely because they again grifting, trying
- 9:42Speaker 2: to get the clickbait right. But then they'll post it.
- 9:44Speaker 2: I mean it's clearly fake. Then why why are you
- 9:48Speaker 2: putting a big news thing about it?
- 9:49Speaker 1: Because they all want their small slice of the attention dollar.
- 9:53Speaker 1: We're in the attention economy and you.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Know, and I know we're talking about it right on
- 9:56Speaker 2: our show, right. But the thing is they end it
- 9:58Speaker 2: by saying, you know, the Simpsons of a lies. Our
- 10:00Speaker 2: features already written. I guess we have to wait and
- 10:02Speaker 2: see whether.
- 10:02Speaker 1: This comes true. Okay, well, let's establish our bona fide
- 10:05Speaker 1: is here. Do not watch this No, do not follow
- 10:08Speaker 1: this account if it comes up in your algorithm block,
- 10:11Speaker 1: say I don't want this vote with your attention dollar, yes,
- 10:16Speaker 1: and give that attention dollar to your pal. The other
- 10:19Speaker 1: need some positive news though, positive news. Okay, hear me,
- 10:22Speaker 1: so our.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Pals at kid Robot, who do some awesome Simpsons figures.
- 10:26Speaker 2: I've got my Devil Flanders up there, and a lot
- 10:28Speaker 2: of little mini ones. I've got the mister Sparkle behind me.
- 10:30Speaker 2: He s with the laundry box box. You know you're
- 10:33Speaker 2: right in front.
- 10:34Speaker 1: No, I see it, I see it, you see it.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I've got to look past you.
- 10:37Speaker 2: But they do great vinyl figures, that kind of thing.
- 10:40Speaker 2: But they have released a thirty six inch high Homer
- 10:43Speaker 2: in the Hedges figure.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Right. Did you check this out? I did? I did,
- 10:47Speaker 1: and then but I also did some metrics. No, no
- 10:50Speaker 1: metric conversion like now to thirty six inches, because you know,
- 10:54Speaker 1: I'm a man and I tend to misrepresent size. This
- 10:57Speaker 1: is close to a meter at all, yes, very very tall,
- 11:00Speaker 1: about ninety one centimeters. I mean, for those of us
- 11:02Speaker 1: you know, I would have the metric system. I don't
- 11:05Speaker 1: know what that shit is. I would love to have,
- 11:06Speaker 1: bitch and reference folks.
- 11:07Speaker 2: It feels completely unnecessary. I would still love to have it.
- 11:11Speaker 2: But the thing is how much shit in this life
- 11:12Speaker 2: is necessary?
- 11:13Speaker 1: Nothing's necessary, you're right, well, you know, food, shelter, breathing
- 11:17Speaker 1: in and out, can't be caring. That's an optional extra.
- 11:22Speaker 1: But this is twenty twenty six.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I don't think anyone in Australia could legitimately afford this
- 11:26Speaker 2: because it's sixteen hundred US dollars and I don't think
- 11:29Speaker 2: anyone in twenty twenty six has that kind of money
- 11:32Speaker 2: to drop on something when you've got Homer and Hedges,
- 11:35Speaker 2: cheaper stuff available at your local toy stores. You got
- 11:39Speaker 2: the Funko pop vinyls. Yes they don't look like this,
- 11:41Speaker 2: but man, it's it feels like as cool as this is,
- 11:44Speaker 2: I love it. I'm just not sure I can afford this.
- 11:46Speaker 2: I would ever, just even if I had the money
- 11:48Speaker 2: and I spend that much money on it.
- 11:50Speaker 1: And we're in a room full of Simpsons crab Yeah,
- 11:53Speaker 1: oh can't. So yeah, maybe not the best time to
- 11:57Speaker 1: come out with something that costs a pretty penny, but
- 12:00Speaker 1: I don't know. If you're a fan of Simpson's stuff, Yeah,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and look, as you said from our powers at kid Robot,
- 12:07Speaker 1: makers of quality merch due.
- 12:09Speaker 2: It is his spinning around. There's just a giant Homer head,
- 12:12Speaker 2: so thirty six inches. So that giant iron giant up there,
- 12:16Speaker 2: that's twenty nine so it's ten inches bigger than that,
- 12:18Speaker 2: So it's probably it's probably if it's on there, it's
- 12:19Speaker 2: probably gonna be touching the roof.
- 12:21Speaker 1: It's massive.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Well, don't never move your iron giant. No, no, the
- 12:24Speaker 2: iron giant No six days. Yes, but the thing is
- 12:27Speaker 2: I just I don't know. Hopefully it works for him.
- 12:29Speaker 2: It's a bowl st let's seve.
- 12:31Speaker 1: It pays, but look more powered kid robot.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I mean, look, I think I think they may have
- 12:38Speaker 2: missed the boat with the Homer and head stuff because
- 12:40Speaker 2: it's just as a Simpsons fan Simpce, it's dying hard.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Me personally, I'm over the Homer in Hedge stuff now
- 12:46Speaker 2: because it kind of feels like everyone's talking. Everyone knows
- 12:49Speaker 2: the Homer and Hedge has been.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Yeah, but you'll you'll god tier Simpsons fan, right right?
- 12:53Speaker 2: I mean this, youre trying to tell me anyone that's
- 12:56Speaker 2: not a but a god tears spending much money on
- 12:58Speaker 2: a Simpons Homer and Hedge for you.
- 13:00Speaker 1: But what I mean is like you've reached the next
- 13:02Speaker 1: stage of enlightenment. You're despite appearance of the condury, You'll
- 13:06Speaker 1: be on merge now where there are people who are
- 13:12Speaker 1: kind of like, I love the Simpsons and I want to,
- 13:14Speaker 1: you know, celebrate and.
- 13:15Speaker 2: All the people will want to have this in their
- 13:17Speaker 2: office and sure, yeah, yeah, it's a talking point. And
- 13:19Speaker 2: I love that it's flocked as well, So it's kind of
- 13:21Speaker 2: nice little flocked feel. How would you describe flocked feel?
- 13:24Speaker 2: You know, flocked pop.
- 13:24Speaker 1: I'm aware of what it is. I'm help.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I was like, Stucky was like fairy, isn't it. It's
- 13:30Speaker 2: got texture texture to it. Yeah, it's not plastic.
- 13:32Speaker 1: It's going to feel legit. But yeah, I mean looks cool.
- 13:35Speaker 1: It looks great. Sure, everything from Kid Drover, it looks great.
- 13:37Speaker 1: It's just come we here forward. Yeah we should say yeah.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I mean I've been trying to push the kid Robot
- 13:42Speaker 1: barrow here. It's like, these guys make good stuff. They do, Yes,
- 13:45Speaker 1: these are the stuff. This is not.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Shall we say team, here's the thirty six inch by
- 13:51Speaker 2: Simpsons that god as well. I'm looking at him like
- 13:53Speaker 2: twelve and fifty US dollars. I've got the Simpsons movie stand.
- 13:57Speaker 2: I'm like, it's not as good as that, But it's fine.
- 14:00Speaker 2: I think that's probably bigger. Yes, but that that again,
- 14:03Speaker 2: it's kind of it's just like Bart with a skateboard.
- 14:04Speaker 2: You mean, I mean, if you've got the money, I'm
- 14:06Speaker 2: sure it looks awesome. This is what it looks like in
- 14:07Speaker 2: real life. Someone took a photo of it, so it
- 14:10Speaker 2: just looks like that.
- 14:11Speaker 1: There's probably some tech bro of course, who was like, yeah, hey,
- 14:16Speaker 1: you know what I love growing up The Simpsons. So
- 14:18Speaker 1: myself is like I see myself as like the boat
- 14:20Speaker 1: Simpson in my neighborhood. Yeah, tend to me to throw
- 14:23Speaker 1: down twelve fifty chump change or yes, what is it,
- 14:28Speaker 1: thirty six inch gant yard.
- 14:31Speaker 2: So I feel like that kind of thing does have
- 14:34Speaker 2: an audience, does have a market. I just don't think
- 14:36Speaker 2: it's the casual Simpsons collector. Oh no, people complain, But.
- 14:39Speaker 1: I'm guessing the kid robot is probably you know, they've
- 14:41Speaker 1: got a lot of stuff that would be it's designer toys.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, but yeah, that is the latest release from
- 14:47Speaker 2: kid Robots.
- 14:47Speaker 1: I hope it works out.
- 14:48Speaker 2: From the awesome pieces, I would love to own them,
- 14:50Speaker 2: I just don't think I could ever afford them. And
- 14:52Speaker 2: like trying to get those things ship to Australia to
- 14:55Speaker 2: the point where we say, hey, if you want to
- 14:56Speaker 2: be a patron the four finger, justsca that work.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Hey, kid Robots sent send us one and we'll talk all.
- 15:01Speaker 1: There is that. Yeah, we talk about keeping the lights
- 15:04Speaker 1: on here off condition. Now we're talking about give us
- 15:07Speaker 1: more crap, give us more money to board, more grap
- 15:10Speaker 1: so us more stuff so we can sell it. Well,
- 15:12Speaker 1: there is that. But hey, yeah, kid robot, legitimate friend
- 15:16Speaker 1: of the pot. I mean, I like to think we're
- 15:18Speaker 1: doing on a solo by saying we like your stuff.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Yes, Now let's get into a couple of questions, shall we.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Let's go to the ones from the mail bag? All right,
- 15:25Speaker 2: so open it up. This one here comes from Chris
- 15:32Speaker 2: Dein Christine. What inspired Ristine or Chris Christine?
- 15:36Speaker 1: Christine with the tea, Christine with a T, like the car,
- 15:39Speaker 1: like the guest killer Stephen Kin Carr.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Yes, she wants to know what do you consider to
- 15:43Speaker 2: be the most overrated Simpsons episode of the Golden era?
- 15:47Speaker 1: Oh, golly, Christine with a K. By the way, I
- 15:50Speaker 1: was confused, I've gone here, So I've got a couple
- 15:53Speaker 1: of answers right, I may get people coming at me
- 15:56Speaker 1: with pitchforks. Right, I'm going to throw margresses the monorail
- 16:00Speaker 1: out there. I was gonna say, now, this is honestly
- 16:04Speaker 1: the first thing that sprang to mind.
- 16:05Speaker 2: That's not to say that I don't think it's an
- 16:07Speaker 2: amazing episode, right, But recently on four Finger discount on
- 16:11Speaker 2: a Facebook page, we've run competitions like the best contest
- 16:13Speaker 2: ever and season four was won by March resus the monorail.
- 16:17Speaker 2: And I and a lot of people are annoyed by this,
- 16:19Speaker 2: but you know, I left it to the people. The
- 16:21Speaker 2: people voted, so people seem to think it's the most
- 16:24Speaker 2: you'll almost beloved episode of season four.
- 16:26Speaker 1: You like the Donald Trump of Simpson's podcast. I led
- 16:28Speaker 1: the people to say yes.
- 16:29Speaker 2: But the thing is, I think that March rest of
- 16:32Speaker 2: the monorail is probably probably gets this accolade because it's
- 16:36Speaker 2: the most memorable. I think everyone remembers, even the casual
- 16:39Speaker 2: Simpsons viewer, even people who aren't Simpsons fans, remembers that
- 16:42Speaker 2: time they had the monorail.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Try to remember what else happens in the episode, or
- 16:46Speaker 1: get specific about what happens in the episode beyond How
- 16:48Speaker 1: does that episode. I can't know.
- 16:50Speaker 2: I so I know, but a lot of people will go,
- 16:52Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Hey, March's the Monoroil. Oh yeah, Monrel. That's what everyone remembers,
- 16:58Speaker 1: the monorail songs, like oh yeah, but oh that guy's
- 17:00Speaker 1: a con man, and then they go to these other
- 17:02Speaker 1: towns and oh yeah, the monorail is. Yeah. It's a
- 17:04Speaker 1: big white elephant.
- 17:05Speaker 2: And it's got some great jokes, obviously, and it's always
- 17:07Speaker 2: filled with great jokes, filled with weird absurd Conan O'Brien.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Yeah, so here's the thing. It's got a great centerpiece,
- 17:15Speaker 1: it's got Phil Hartman doing some of Phil Hartman's best stuff,
- 17:19Speaker 1: and it's got the Conan O'Brien name on it. Now,
- 17:22Speaker 1: these are all sort of big signifiers of quality. They
- 17:25Speaker 1: are all things that we that we really really love
- 17:27Speaker 1: and admire. So it's only natural that we're saying overrated here.
- 17:33Speaker 1: It doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad, No, not at all. No,
- 17:36Speaker 1: it's not bad in any way. That's correct, But I
- 17:38Speaker 1: think it yeah, because it's got those things attached to it,
- 17:40Speaker 1: and a lot of people can go, oh yeah, Montrel. Yeah.
- 17:44Speaker 1: But yeah, as we're saying, what else happens in this episode,
- 17:48Speaker 1: and that's not necessarily a bad thing. But ye go back,
- 17:50Speaker 1: go back, and rewatch your boy. Go hey. That's a
- 17:52Speaker 1: pretty good episode that it is the instant go to
- 17:54Speaker 1: for a lot of people. It's got the.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Leonard Nimoy, you know, didn't I. It's got the I
- 17:59Speaker 2: shouldn't stopped that haircut?
- 18:00Speaker 1: You know.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Batman's a scientist, that guy, right, it's got Homer. Episode
- 18:05Speaker 2: begins with Homer singing the Simpson Simpson. These are all
- 18:09Speaker 2: just funny bits that are sort of just thrown in
- 18:13Speaker 2: because it's just Conan just saying this would be funny.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Smithers and mister Burne's trying to hard nuclear waste into
- 18:20Speaker 2: trees and you get. It's all just it's a wackiness, right,
- 18:24Speaker 2: and it's funny. But for me personally, this isn't what
- 18:26Speaker 2: I would call a perfect Simpsons episode. If you go
- 18:31Speaker 2: on for best Simpsons episodes, I think ones need to
- 18:33Speaker 2: have more of an emotional story to it. We recently
- 18:36Speaker 2: was not release yet, but Rosebud. We discussed Rosebud with
- 18:39Speaker 2: day Thornton. That's another episode similar to this. Lots of
- 18:41Speaker 2: funny bits. You washing it going, oh my god, sixty
- 18:43Speaker 2: four slices of American cheese. Oh my god, two plus
- 18:45Speaker 2: two is four.
- 18:46Speaker 1: That.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Yes, all these moments the ramones, but it's got an
- 18:49Speaker 2: emotional core behind it as well, Yes, which I don't
- 18:52Speaker 2: think Margin Misus the Monomail has Homer wants to do good,
- 18:55Speaker 2: he says the day, but it's not an emotional story.
- 18:57Speaker 2: There's no emotion to that episode. And that's not saying
- 18:59Speaker 2: that's a bad I think, but for me personally, I
- 19:01Speaker 2: want a bit of emotion.
- 19:02Speaker 1: But it's interesting that we both that marg Vesus the
- 19:05Speaker 1: Monroroy was actually the first thing that came to mind
- 19:06Speaker 1: for both of us without discussing it.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Yes, I also was surprised. I thought you would have
- 19:11Speaker 2: said Cape Fear as well. Well, yeah, but that's kind
- 19:13Speaker 2: of my go to these days in terms of and
- 19:15Speaker 2: I wanted to shake things up with the people for
- 19:17Speaker 2: the people. Then, because the argument there is that as
- 19:21Speaker 2: funny of a parody Cape Fear is everyone remembers the
- 19:25Speaker 2: rate gag and people some people say the rate gag
- 19:28Speaker 2: goes too long. You're one of those people. I watch
- 19:30Speaker 2: it and I'm like, I see what you mean. Yeah,
- 19:32Speaker 2: it does go along that that that's the joy.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Also that's the joke.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Yes, but there's there's a lot, there's a Mister Thompson
- 19:38Speaker 2: that there's lots of great in that episode. But again,
- 19:41Speaker 2: I don't think it has I think it suffers from
- 19:42Speaker 2: that lack of emotional core that Rosebud has.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Yeah, the other thing. I think the other thing with
- 19:48Speaker 1: Cape Fear is that, and there's purely a personal thing.
- 19:52Speaker 1: I tend to get a little weary of sar job
- 19:55Speaker 1: Bob's got it in for Bart again. Yeah, I mean
- 19:58Speaker 1: that was only the second off, but yeah, they all
- 20:00Speaker 1: tend to sort of bleed into one for me. Okay,
- 20:02Speaker 1: so I'm like, I can probably live without this.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and I've also got one extra one here, which
- 20:09Speaker 2: pains me to say because it's so beloved for me.
- 20:12Speaker 2: I have so many fond memories of it. But it's
- 20:14Speaker 2: who shot mister Burns, Right. I think the mystery and
- 20:19Speaker 2: the hoopla around the mystery outshines the actual quality of
- 20:22Speaker 2: the gags. You watched the episode, and the episode itself
- 20:27Speaker 2: obviously has funny moments, right, But as an episode, I
- 20:31Speaker 2: don't think they're the best episodes, But the situation that
- 20:35Speaker 2: surrounded them is what you remember, and you had this
- 20:37Speaker 2: nostalgia connection to it. Yeah, it was so much fun.
- 20:40Speaker 2: The whole situation was fun.
- 20:42Speaker 1: We've been talking about this so long that you know,
- 20:44Speaker 1: we're talking about the quality of the episodes, what's actually
- 20:48Speaker 1: inside the episodes, but I think we're also talking about
- 20:50Speaker 1: the process of making them and the process of marketing
- 20:53Speaker 1: them as well. And yeah, you're very correct in what
- 20:55Speaker 1: you say. That's like, Oh this was this wasn't so
- 21:00Speaker 1: much created as a story.
- 21:05Speaker 2: As it was an event. That's and it was a
- 21:08Speaker 2: fun event. Oh sure, it meant a lot to kids
- 21:11Speaker 2: who watched it at the time.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Look, marketing and hype and hoop like can
- 21:15Speaker 1: be just as much of an art form as the
- 21:17Speaker 1: creation of the art itself. And there's certainly got people talking,
- 21:21Speaker 1: and it got people watching The Simpsons and got people
- 21:23Speaker 1: thinking and all that kind of stuff. So yeah, I mean, no,
- 21:28Speaker 1: I agree with you one hundred percent that everything around
- 21:32Speaker 1: it is more entertaining and perhaps has more of a
- 21:35Speaker 1: lifespan and more substance and impact in the episodes themselves.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Because you see often people share on social media, myself included,
- 21:42Speaker 2: someone's made a fake Las Vegas betting like the betting
- 21:47Speaker 2: Gods on the screen of who actually did it? And yeah,
- 21:51Speaker 2: that never happened, but I remember they did the It
- 21:55Speaker 2: was like a crime Stoppers kind of show in America,
- 21:57Speaker 2: and what was it called Mary's Most Want h Yeah,
- 22:01Speaker 2: but it did like a fake one for this episode,
- 22:02Speaker 2: like it was a big deal and it meant so much.
- 22:05Speaker 2: So yeah, I just it pays me to say, But
- 22:07Speaker 2: I think who Mister Burns may be a bit overrated
- 22:09Speaker 2: in our mind's purely because of the event makes it
- 22:12Speaker 2: seem like a better episode than what it was.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Well, when something is overrated, I think it tends to
- 22:15Speaker 1: be because it was incredibly propular and it has taken
- 22:20Speaker 1: on a life of its own beyond the episode itself.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Oftentimes it seems like people are reacting not so much
- 22:26Speaker 1: to the material itself, but everything surrounding the material.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Next question from Jim. Pop culture is filled with many
- 22:34Speaker 2: larger than life characters. Who do you believe is the
- 22:37Speaker 2: most springfield coded real life celebrity? I've gone with Jack Black. Oh, okay,
- 22:44Speaker 2: I think Jack Black as a over active He's like
- 22:48Speaker 2: an overactive child in a man's body. You know, he's
- 22:50Speaker 2: got his over the top facial expressions. He's full of energy.
- 22:54Speaker 2: He's just a lot of physical comedy. I think he
- 22:57Speaker 2: could fit right into He feels like a Simpson's Carria.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Oh okay, life sales of another Jack And I'm not
- 23:03Speaker 1: really I don't really know much. As we were saying before,
- 23:07Speaker 1: you know, when we were talking about I've already forgot
- 23:11Speaker 1: the name of that dreadful site future one that's going
- 23:15Speaker 1: to become a bit of it. If the world of
- 23:17Speaker 1: internet culture is sort of like I don't understand you,
- 23:20Speaker 1: and there are internet personalities that quote unquote celebrities streamers now,
- 23:25Speaker 1: isn't it. Well, that's the thing, or people who were
- 23:27Speaker 1: just your influencers. For instance, there was a young man
- 23:30Speaker 1: apparently his name is Jack Dougherty. I think, yeah, he
- 23:35Speaker 1: might be a bit of a nepo baby. It was
- 23:36Speaker 1: only all his son of people who are very rich.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Unless he's sort of created.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Oh that guy, Yeah, and he got punched in the
- 23:44Speaker 2: face ones or something or someone.
- 23:45Speaker 1: He's basically someone on the Internet who goes around and
- 23:47Speaker 1: he sort of you know, teases people and until he
- 23:49Speaker 1: gets into fights. Yeah. Yeah, I think he's like twenty
- 23:52Speaker 1: two or something and he only too Yeah. One of
- 23:56Speaker 1: the things he sort of went viral for he had
- 23:57Speaker 1: like a like a supercar, like a McLaren or something,
- 24:00Speaker 1: and he just crashed it and his mate was filming
- 24:03Speaker 1: at the time, and his mate sort of filmed the
- 24:04Speaker 1: accent and filmed him walking away from bro I just
- 24:07Speaker 1: totaled moment, Claire. He to my mind, if we're talking
- 24:11Speaker 1: about Simpsons coded real life people, he is like Freddy
- 24:18Speaker 1: Quimby or Gavin who wants bone.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Storm, yes, or I think I think more Freddie. Freddy's
- 24:25Speaker 2: got the money, yes, and he's just an absolute obnoxious
- 24:28Speaker 2: wanker about it.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Yeah. And there's some other kid on the Simpsons who
- 24:31Speaker 1: sort of has a little sort of he's very entireed,
- 24:34Speaker 1: a little pig nose. He's only like supporting. But oh
- 24:38Speaker 1: as a school kid, I'm thinking, yeah, I could be
- 24:42Speaker 1: thinking of something. Okay anyway, But yeah, but he feels
- 24:45Speaker 1: very Freddy quimbyish. And he also feels very kind of like,
- 24:48Speaker 1: I'm not sharing the Queenland. I'm not sharing the game
- 24:50Speaker 1: with Keathland. Shut up, mom by two, I'm not sharing
- 24:54Speaker 1: with Kaitland, Yes, exactly. So I don't know, I get
- 24:57Speaker 1: the feeling. Yeah, he feels like a Springfield terrible character.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Sort of pulled out of the screen and put into
- 25:04Speaker 1: our world, and we're all the worst for it.
- 25:06Speaker 2: I also can see a character like Dennis Rodman. He
- 25:10Speaker 2: feels just you know, he's so unpredictable, he's so insane.
- 25:14Speaker 2: He feels like a background character that somehow becomes the
- 25:16Speaker 2: main story.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Sure, do we have any sports people like that these days?
- 25:20Speaker 1: Like I mean high profile ones. I mean think of
- 25:23Speaker 1: like high profile say NBA.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Players who are willing to push limits like that. Yeah,
- 25:28Speaker 2: the bad boys of the sport. Yeah, I don't think
- 25:31Speaker 2: we have bad boys of the sport because people are
- 25:33Speaker 2: just too focused on being canceled. Now, so he could
- 25:35Speaker 2: Robin wouldn't survive now, you knowst thing?
- 25:38Speaker 1: I think you could be outrage without being sort of
- 25:40Speaker 1: doing stuff that gets you canceled.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean the closest thing we have in Australian
- 25:43Speaker 2: maybe Bailey Smith, That's what I was thinking, which is
- 25:45Speaker 2: an AUSTRALIANRU football for Geelong.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Yeah, very talented player, young man, and he's very sort
- 25:53Speaker 1: of open about you know, he struggles with mental health
- 25:55Speaker 1: and involves control and all that kind of stuff. But
- 25:59Speaker 1: he also constantly wears a headband and looks like he's
- 26:02Speaker 1: wearing eyeshadow and it kind of looks like Jack s Barrett.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Yeah, come on to an extens so I see Geelong's
- 26:06Speaker 2: AFL coach Chris Scott very similar to Phil Jackson. And
- 26:09Speaker 2: Phil Jackson was apparently known for a guy who had
- 26:11Speaker 2: a bunch of characters and he knew how to handle
- 26:14Speaker 2: each character and let them be themselves because he knew
- 26:17Speaker 2: once they got on the court, they got shit done.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Correct.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Yes, And Chris Scott seems to be a coach who's
- 26:21Speaker 2: just like, I know they're fucking wild, yes, but I
- 26:25Speaker 2: keep them. I keep them on a leash. They might
- 26:27Speaker 2: think they're doing what they want. I keep them on
- 26:28Speaker 2: their leash. I let them do what they want because
- 26:30Speaker 2: they I know once they get on that field, they're
- 26:32Speaker 2: gonna do what I asked him to do.
- 26:33Speaker 1: It's good coaching. It's a good coach.
- 26:35Speaker 2: He's a good coach. Indeed, right, next question here, this
- 26:38Speaker 2: one comes from Scott. Scott says, is Principal Skinn a
- 26:42Speaker 2: funnier pre or post the Arm and TAM's Erring episode
- 26:45Speaker 2: which is Principal and the Paupers what he's referring to.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Did it change your view of him? When rewatching previous episodes.
- 26:51Speaker 2: I like that second part there. So do you think
- 26:53Speaker 2: it was funny a pre or post? So first answer
- 26:56Speaker 2: there is he was funny a pre because I think
- 26:59Speaker 2: post he became a simp missus k. I think the
- 27:02Speaker 2: character changed a lot post Grade School Confidential when he
- 27:05Speaker 2: starts dating missus Kay, because he never seemed like a
- 27:08Speaker 2: simple He seemed like a mumma's boy in the first
- 27:11Speaker 2: eight seasons, and then he became just pathetic and the
- 27:14Speaker 2: kids weren't afraid of him anymore. And I think a
- 27:17Speaker 2: lot of characters just lost their fear fact. Burns is
- 27:20Speaker 2: another one. The power plant employees weren't scared of him anymore.
- 27:23Speaker 2: No one was scared of him. No one's scared of
- 27:25Speaker 2: Nelson anymore. No one's scared of Burns anymore. No one's
- 27:27Speaker 2: scared of Skinner anymore. You need those figures in the
- 27:30Speaker 2: world who put the fear of Goide into people.
- 27:32Speaker 1: That's the thing you need to give you a character,
- 27:35Speaker 1: a fully rounded kind of personality and a life and
- 27:38Speaker 1: an existence. But at the same time, what you really
- 27:40Speaker 1: need to think about screenwriting lessons from you a Power
- 27:44Speaker 1: Guy is how they fit into the story and the
- 27:46Speaker 1: role they fit in the role they play in the
- 27:49Speaker 1: overall story. Now real Skinner is an authority figure. You know,
- 27:53Speaker 1: he's an antagonist to Bart, primarily with thinking about the
- 27:57Speaker 1: Simpsons family and how they interact with the people around them.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Homer is Homo's antagonist is mister Burns because you know,
- 28:03Speaker 1: he has to go to work and it's like, oh, well,
- 28:05Speaker 1: this is the guy who's running the show, and if
- 28:06Speaker 1: I mess up or you know, if I cross this guy,
- 28:09Speaker 1: I'm in trouble. No one likes their boss, and no
- 28:11Speaker 1: one likes their boss except me. Um. Yeah, so Skinner
- 28:16Speaker 1: needed to be a guy who is like, when I'm here,
- 28:18Speaker 1: I'm running the show, and you know, this is how
- 28:20Speaker 1: things have got to go in my school, except you know,
- 28:22Speaker 1: he's always being you know, tripped up by Bart in
- 28:26Speaker 1: one way, or Bart is always sort of pushing against
- 28:28Speaker 1: that authority, and after hours as clear as like, oh,
- 28:31Speaker 1: this guy's got feed to Clay because his mum's pushing
- 28:33Speaker 1: him around. That's all you need. You don't need that
- 28:35Speaker 1: many character traits. He's just like, oh, I'm an authority figure,
- 28:39Speaker 1: but I'm doing that because when I go home, my
- 28:40Speaker 1: mum's like, stand up straight see Moore or something like that.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Also, when Bart gets revenge on Skinner, Bart's still the
- 28:46Speaker 2: bad guy. Bar did something wrong, Skinner punishing for it,
- 28:49Speaker 2: and Bar's getting eventually is a shithead. Yeah, it's not.
- 28:51Speaker 2: It's not getting come up. It's because Skinner deserves it.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Skinner don't deserve get his house agged and things. Absolutely,
- 28:56Speaker 2: they're being disrespectful.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right.
- 28:59Speaker 2: So is he funny a pre? He's definitely funny a pre.
- 29:03Speaker 1: I think so. Yes.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the character lost a bit of its luster.
- 29:06Speaker 2: I won't think I don't think it lost its luster
- 29:07Speaker 2: because of the arm and TAM's or anything.
- 29:09Speaker 1: I don't think that.
- 29:10Speaker 2: I don't think that makes any difference at all at all.
- 29:12Speaker 2: It's not the episode. It was the fact that he
- 29:14Speaker 2: was now in a relationship with missus k And I
- 29:16Speaker 2: think it seemed like a good idea at the time,
- 29:18Speaker 2: But to keep that relationship going it just made it
- 29:22Speaker 2: just de evolved the character. Yeah, I think so he
- 29:24Speaker 2: lost his luster. He's lost his ability to have any
- 29:26Speaker 2: sort of I don't know what's the term control over
- 29:30Speaker 2: the kids. Yeah, and they had no respect for him anymore.
- 29:32Speaker 2: He became a punchline.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Yeah, if the authority Thinkure has no authority, then what's
- 29:36Speaker 1: the point?
- 29:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so I think and does it does it change?
- 29:41Speaker 1: I mean, I think it's funny that Yeah, he is
- 29:43Speaker 1: the one that Skinner is the one who's trying to
- 29:45Speaker 1: present this picture of like, yes, I'm running the show
- 29:48Speaker 1: around here, except incomes Charmers, and Charmers is pushing him
- 29:53Speaker 1: around as well.
- 29:54Speaker 2: So yeah, but even they made Skinner less scared of
- 29:58Speaker 2: Charmers by the end of they they ruined all those Yeah,
- 30:02Speaker 2: those relationships they did, didn't They They took that sort
- 30:04Speaker 2: of out of the comedy. But the second part of
- 30:06Speaker 2: the question was does it affect your viewing of previous episodes?
- 30:09Speaker 2: Not in any way, none, not at all. That those episodes,
- 30:12Speaker 2: of those episodes they're funny, they're funny or they're not.

- 30:46Speaker 2: the description of this show. Next one here is from Melina.
- 30:50Speaker 2: Molina says, got this one's for you guy. You joined
- 30:52Speaker 2: the podcast after season ten? Has your view of the
- 30:55Speaker 2: Simpsons changed since joining? So basically, I think she's trying
- 30:58Speaker 2: to ask what we were for and the Simpsons going
- 31:00Speaker 2: into it, and have has your opinion changed since?
- 31:03Speaker 1: Thank you Malania Trump for this question. Thank you first lady,
- 31:07Speaker 1: I hope you hope your movie is doing well.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Melina, dammit, it's a.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Good question and thank you. Has my view of the
- 31:17Speaker 1: Simpsons changed since joining the show? Yeah, it's interesting. I mean,
- 31:22Speaker 1: what did you think of.
- 31:23Speaker 2: The Simpsons when you first joined it? What were your
- 31:25Speaker 2: memories of the Simpsons? Did you think talking about the
- 31:27Speaker 2: Simpsons or were you just like, oh, I'll do whateverse
- 31:28Speaker 2: the pay the bills.
- 31:30Speaker 1: A little from Colum, A little from Colum b Now.
- 31:33Speaker 1: I thought it would be interesting given that I had
- 31:37Speaker 1: a real love and appreciation for The Simpsons. But yeah,
- 31:40Speaker 1: again what we call Golden era, because I really it
- 31:45Speaker 1: was a sense of human It was very much in
- 31:47Speaker 1: sync with my own the episodes that I really loved,
- 31:49Speaker 1: and also I recognized it as kind of like, well,
- 31:51Speaker 1: this is really shifting a whole lot in terms of
- 31:55Speaker 1: the way, you know, television comedy has made, American comedy
- 31:59Speaker 1: has made. It was it's so rare when something becomes
- 32:04Speaker 1: like part of the establishment almost immediately. I mean, and
- 32:07Speaker 1: when I say almost immediate, I mean, of course it
- 32:09Speaker 1: took a.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Few years, but I think it was pretty instant. It
- 32:12Speaker 2: was pretty instant because but I think also too, you
- 32:15Speaker 2: entering the podcast in an era where you hadn't watched this.
- 32:19Speaker 1: That's the other thing. Yeah, I mean when we started
- 32:21Speaker 1: talking about from season ten on, was like, I know
- 32:24Speaker 1: some of these episodes, but yeah, watching the Simpsons wasn't
- 32:27Speaker 1: like a full on a point reviewing slash regular kind
- 32:31Speaker 1: of thing. So never for you, oh not never, No,
- 32:34Speaker 1: I mean there were certainly episodes, particularly from you know
- 32:37Speaker 1: ten through to maybe like the mid teens, it was like, oh, yeah, look,
- 32:41Speaker 1: I know a lot.
- 32:42Speaker 2: I'm talking Golden era though, But when the Golden Era
- 32:45Speaker 2: was on TV. Was it something that you were watching
- 32:48Speaker 2: at all?
- 32:48Speaker 1: I was sure, okay, yeah, yeah, I mean I watched it, yeah,
- 32:51Speaker 1: pretty regularly. And of course they'd be repeat episodes. It's like, oh, yeah,
- 32:55Speaker 1: this is on Fantasy'm gonna watch it because you would
- 32:56Speaker 1: have been mid twenties. Yeah, and of course you know
- 32:59Speaker 1: you're sitting around and beers with you mates, well, you know,
- 33:01Speaker 1: maybe ingesting something else and just but how many times
- 33:05Speaker 1: have we been on. Yeah, we've had guests on and
- 33:08Speaker 1: we'll be talking about Oh, that just became part of
- 33:11Speaker 1: my language. Either oh that's a punchline that I really like,
- 33:16Speaker 1: or just a line becomes something you can apply to
- 33:18Speaker 1: everyday life. Yeah, so I certainly found that. Yeah, but
- 33:22Speaker 1: with episodes post season ten, a lot of it was
- 33:28Speaker 1: oh this is a good reminder of something that I liked,
- 33:31Speaker 1: or oh that's a reminder of something that i'd forgotten,
- 33:33Speaker 1: or okay, this is fine. But you can also watch
- 33:36Speaker 1: the development of the show both as a as its
- 33:40Speaker 1: own creative thing, but also how it's responding to the
- 33:44Speaker 1: entertainment environment around it. How many times have we said, oh, well,
- 33:47Speaker 1: they know that South Park is on the same block now,
- 33:49Speaker 1: and they have to adjust their thinking according or family
- 33:52Speaker 1: guys at and oh they're trying to be a bit
- 33:54Speaker 1: of family guy here. So I find that really interesting
- 33:57Speaker 1: as well, maybe more so. I need more interesting from
- 34:02Speaker 1: taking that big picture of you as opposed to I'm
- 34:04Speaker 1: just enjoying this episode that we certainly times when I'm
- 34:06Speaker 1: enjoying the episode, but I'm more thinking about it in
- 34:09Speaker 1: terms of this is how it's responding to the way
- 34:11Speaker 1: things are in the world or the way things are
- 34:13Speaker 1: in the entertainment industry.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Critiquing it.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, so haw's my view of The Simpsons changed
- 34:18Speaker 1: since joining I guess I'm looking at it more as like,
- 34:22Speaker 1: this is how it's made, This is how the sausage
- 34:24Speaker 1: is made. And I find that just as invigorating and
- 34:26Speaker 1: talking about it just as invigorating.
- 34:27Speaker 2: I think you happen to watch it week to week
- 34:29Speaker 2: to week, Yeah, you get a sense of this is
- 34:31Speaker 2: what they're doing at this point in time. Absolutely, that
- 34:33Speaker 2: is what the writer's room was into at the moment.
- 34:35Speaker 1: That's right.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, now, these questions he come from the
- 34:38Speaker 2: Patreon group. So have you suppot of ours on Patreon?
- 34:41Speaker 2: You get access to the Patreon group on Facebook, and
- 34:43Speaker 2: we also have the Discord as well. Now just started
- 34:45Speaker 2: a mail bag thread in the discord, So if you
- 34:47Speaker 2: are on Discord and listen to the show. If you're
- 34:49Speaker 2: not on Discord, insten to the show, jump onto the
- 34:51Speaker 2: forig of Discant Discord and join in the mail bag
- 34:54Speaker 2: thread in there as well. But it's when he comes
- 34:55Speaker 2: from James Polstrump. He says, you've both sporadically referenced your
- 34:59Speaker 2: old jobs prietually four Finger Discount. Can you tell us
- 35:01Speaker 2: more about your backgrounds and how you ended up podcasting.
- 35:04Speaker 2: We've touched on it before. You know, you journalist and
- 35:06Speaker 2: you move reviewing as well, but just give a brief
- 35:09Speaker 2: summary of Guy Davis pre ffd.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Yeah, sure, I was, Yeah, a journalist and feature writer
- 35:15Speaker 1: and a critic. Yeah, I mean writing about film, television
- 35:19Speaker 1: culture in general. But also you know, a bit of
- 35:22Speaker 1: everything overall Playboy overall Playboy. Yes, a man's man, woman's man,
- 35:26Speaker 1: man about town. Men wanted him, men wanted to be correct,
- 35:30Speaker 1: men wanted to do it. So, yeah, a bit of
- 35:34Speaker 1: that for yeah, the bulk of my career. And occasionally,
- 35:38Speaker 1: you know, with the way things going, you take other
- 35:40Speaker 1: jobs to make ends meet, and I started doing a
- 35:43Speaker 1: bit of work at Pop Culture, which is where I
- 35:44Speaker 1: met Brendan Dan. First day, they plumped me down next
- 35:48Speaker 1: to him and said, do what Dando does? How do
- 35:51Speaker 1: you do it? Dan?
- 35:53Speaker 2: The way I told you two minutes ago. Jesus Christ
- 35:57Speaker 2: rather be here.
- 36:00Speaker 1: But you know, Dan, I started talking about this thing
- 36:03Speaker 1: that he did call a podcast on what is Like Radio.
- 36:07Speaker 1: But no, the more he talked about it, the more
- 36:10Speaker 1: intrigued I god, because he was clearly switched on and
- 36:13Speaker 1: very very passionate about it. And they're very generously. He
- 36:18Speaker 1: and former co host who shall not be named No Mitch,
- 36:20Speaker 1: he invited, they invited me onto, I think talk about
- 36:23Speaker 1: movies at some stage.
- 36:24Speaker 2: So we did Kill Movie Guys, was a Patreon only thing.
- 36:27Speaker 2: That's how it started.
- 36:27Speaker 1: So we did a few episodes together and Mitch was like, skew,
- 36:30Speaker 1: you guys have going harm and I'm like, well, God,
- 36:32Speaker 1: you take that seat. Mitch decided to go get a
- 36:35Speaker 1: proper job, and Dano very generously asked me to come
- 36:39Speaker 1: on board. So since then, I mean again, it's been
- 36:43Speaker 1: sort of the story in my career that I'll piece
- 36:45Speaker 1: a whole lot of things together and you know, basically
- 36:47Speaker 1: make a living out of that, and this is part
- 36:49Speaker 1: of that right now, which we do mbell work as well,
- 36:51Speaker 1: and that's true work in pop culture sometimes and yeah,
- 36:54Speaker 1: so I'm very very happy to be part of the
- 36:57Speaker 1: of the process. So that's yeah. Basically, if I had
- 37:00Speaker 1: to you do that thing where you travel internationally, it
- 37:02Speaker 1: was like, what do you do for a job? It's
- 37:04Speaker 1: like when I put down journalist or writer. Yeah, so
- 37:07Speaker 1: that's what I do.
- 37:07Speaker 2: The way I got into podcasting, I think I was
- 37:09Speaker 2: very much inspired by listen to the audio commentaries of
- 37:12Speaker 2: The Simpsons DVDs and whatnot and for the first time
- 37:15Speaker 2: being interested into not just the show but how the
- 37:17Speaker 2: show was made. And I found myself more interested in
- 37:20Speaker 2: hearing that than the actual dialogue of the show. And
- 37:23Speaker 2: I used to go to bed every night listening to
- 37:24Speaker 2: those commentaries, and I think that sort of inspired me
- 37:27Speaker 2: to just become a podcast. Plus, we had a show
- 37:29Speaker 2: called The Panel here and it shows me Wednesday nights,
- 37:31Speaker 2: I think nine o'clock on Channel ten.
- 37:33Speaker 1: When you said we thought you, you and Mitch were
- 37:37Speaker 1: the Panel and I love that show.
- 37:40Speaker 2: And even when I was a kid and a lot
- 37:41Speaker 2: of the time i'd know it what they're talking about
- 37:42Speaker 2: I just love the idea of just It felt like
- 37:44Speaker 2: Mate's just sitting around chatting. Sure, and that's essentially what
- 37:47Speaker 2: podcasting has become. It was just and so I think
- 37:49Speaker 2: that was sort of my introduction to podcasting. Then my
- 37:51Speaker 2: mate was a big fan of these guys called Open Anthony,
- 37:54Speaker 2: and he used to download their their their radio shows
- 37:58Speaker 2: and that uploaded. This is before podcast was even a
- 38:01Speaker 2: terment was just you can now listen to the stream
- 38:04Speaker 2: of their show after it's finished. And we'd sit there
- 38:06Speaker 2: and then it'd be like a three hour show and
- 38:09Speaker 2: we'd be in class and he'd eat but one en
- 38:11Speaker 2: and I haven't, and the other we sit next to
- 38:12Speaker 2: and we just listened to Open Anthony whilst we're working
- 38:14Speaker 2: at school, and it was just we became obsessed with
- 38:16Speaker 2: these guys talking and we started on our own podcast.
- 38:18Speaker 2: We ended up getting to Michael and Dando show on
- 38:19Speaker 2: local radio stations here, and then Michael eventually left to
- 38:22Speaker 2: do his other thing, and I was like, I'm enjoying this.
- 38:24Speaker 2: I'm going to keep doing it. And that eventually led
- 38:26Speaker 2: to me doing more radio work solo, and then I
- 38:29Speaker 2: went got picked up with k Rock. Caro came me
- 38:31Speaker 2: on and I went, I'm sick of talking about pop
- 38:33Speaker 2: stars and we'll talk about the Simpsons. And they all
- 38:35Speaker 2: called me crazy. And then I left it and I
- 38:36Speaker 2: started doing Simpsons podcasts and that took off, went really,
- 38:40Speaker 2: really well. And my old boss of KI Rock, who
- 38:42Speaker 2: moved to Triple M, called me, I think I've told
- 38:44Speaker 2: this on the podcast. And the day I quit pop
- 38:46Speaker 2: culture to podcasts full time, he called me up as
- 38:49Speaker 2: I was walking to the car. You couldn't predict this.
- 38:52Speaker 2: I'm walking to my car after quitting, leave my laptop behind,
- 38:55Speaker 2: blah blah blah. He says, guess what I just did.
- 38:57Speaker 2: And I said what, and he goes, just quit my job.
- 38:58Speaker 2: I said why, and he goes, I'm starting to podcast.
- 39:00Speaker 2: I'm like, guys, you are He's like you guys. The
- 39:03Speaker 2: first thing I thought of was I have to call
- 39:04Speaker 2: Dando and tell him you were right.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Well, that's the only thing. I did a bit of
- 39:08Speaker 1: radio as well, for k Rock and BFM, the main
- 39:12Speaker 1: stations down here in g Town.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Yes, all right, now, next question, Andy d have you read, played,
- 39:18Speaker 2: watched any good books, games, movies lately? Danel, I know
- 39:20Speaker 2: you're not really a gamer, and guy doesn't really know
- 39:22Speaker 2: how to turn onto PlayStation or anything like that. This
- 39:25Speaker 2: is sadly true, yes, but it's always worth a check,
- 39:27Speaker 2: So read it. Have you read anything that you've enjoyed lately?
- 39:30Speaker 1: Ah? What have I read recently that I've enjoyed?
- 39:34Speaker 2: I'm about to start the Tim Curry book that you
- 39:35Speaker 2: got me.
- 39:36Speaker 1: Ah. Cool, we're both about to start biographies then, and
- 39:39Speaker 1: autobiographies because I recently got in the mail a book
- 39:43Speaker 1: called Scene by a gentleman named Abel Ferrara. If you
- 39:46Speaker 1: listen to the movie Guy with Martin Davis, you will
- 39:48Speaker 1: have heard me seeing his praises recently. He's a guy,
- 39:50Speaker 1: he's a bit of an underground filmmaker. Made one of
- 39:53Speaker 1: my favorite movies of all the time, a chrome movie
- 39:54Speaker 1: called Kingham, New York. Real character Abel Ferrara, very sort
- 39:58Speaker 1: of a New York street guy, sort of. You know,
- 40:03Speaker 1: he started off making porno movies, but porinals, porinals, but yeah,
- 40:11Speaker 1: you would make these sort of gritty exploitation movies that
- 40:13Speaker 1: have real, actual sort of themes and ideas in them,
- 40:17Speaker 1: and work with legitimately good actors. And yeah, he's just
- 40:20Speaker 1: lived a really interesting life and he's written his memoir now.
- 40:25Speaker 1: He was like a he was a drug addict and
- 40:27Speaker 1: a drunk for gods. Oh now really late in life
- 40:29Speaker 1: he's sort of found Buddhism. He's become a dad late
- 40:32Speaker 1: in life, and he's got of mellowed out his act
- 40:34Speaker 1: and now he's writing about it all. So yeah. The
- 40:35Speaker 1: book is called Scene s c n E. By Abel
- 40:39Speaker 1: for Hour.
- 40:39Speaker 2: I love a good autobiography.
- 40:40Speaker 1: I remember, indeed, well you've got Tim Curry's plenty of him. Yes, yes,
- 40:44Speaker 1: I do, indeed this one here from on? Sorry played it?
- 40:46Speaker 2: So have I played anything I've touched on Last month
- 40:49Speaker 2: I played at Simpsons Fortnite. Aliot has just gotten back
- 40:51Speaker 2: into his AFI twenty six game. The thing is he's
- 40:53Speaker 2: just he put does, put things on easiest mode.
- 40:56Speaker 1: He won a game.
- 40:57Speaker 2: I took a fight. I could have been showing my phone.
- 40:58Speaker 2: He won a game by three hundred and twenty points. Yes,
- 41:01Speaker 2: I said yesterday. Secret just kicking and doing the same thing.
- 41:04Speaker 2: He's like, nah, it's great.
- 41:07Speaker 1: Victory is so sweet.
- 41:08Speaker 2: This is so good because I smashed him to take
- 41:12Speaker 2: the chicken out the oven one second. Tell the list
- 41:14Speaker 2: is what I'm about to do. We mentioned that I
- 41:16Speaker 2: do this. I do this every podcast now.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Frequently on the podcast, Dan will say, give me just
- 41:22Speaker 1: a minute, I've got to go get the chicken out
- 41:23Speaker 1: of the oven. This has become a very regular thing.
- 41:26Speaker 1: So hopefully one of these days he's going to invite
- 41:28Speaker 1: me over to actually eat chicken. Is it? What sort
- 41:30Speaker 1: of He's back? He's back, baby, He's got the chicken
- 41:33Speaker 1: out of the oven. And guess what. I've got a
- 41:35Speaker 1: wife and now works from home, and she took the
- 41:36Speaker 1: chicken out for me. Dad's going self one of those
- 41:40Speaker 1: trade wives. Ye is it? What sort of chicken? Is
- 41:44Speaker 1: it seasoned? Is it crumbed? What's just just breast chicken?
- 41:47Speaker 1: That's what's some wrests in there? Yeah? Just slice it up.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Let it call down a bit, slice it up, put
- 41:51Speaker 2: it in a wrap, yeah, man, with some aoli and
- 41:55Speaker 2: some lettuce and some mayo.
- 41:56Speaker 1: Some red onion and aoli? Is mayo? What did I say?
- 41:59Speaker 2: Did I say mayo?
- 42:00Speaker 1: Is it ali and mayo? Don't double up? Man a letter?
- 42:04Speaker 2: Some of the tomato tomorrow, I'm gonna say tomato. I
- 42:06Speaker 2: think tomato, onion, some salt and pepper and some spinach.
- 42:09Speaker 2: And it sounds very nice, delicious, nothing like your unboard
- 42:12Speaker 2: am burger, but you.
- 42:12Speaker 1: Know it does sand which is pretty simple. That's yeah.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Have we washed anything that we've enjoyed lately?
- 42:19Speaker 1: What's something here? Here's here's a teaser.
- 42:21Speaker 2: He's like a pilot for your show that you keep
- 42:22Speaker 2: wanting to start something that you think people will enjoy
- 42:25Speaker 2: that no one's talking about.
- 42:26Speaker 1: That's correct. Give me, give me man, oh man. She
- 42:31Speaker 1: was debb before I started. It's not a different started,
- 42:34Speaker 1: but you put me on the spot. I don't know
- 42:36Speaker 1: because I think a few people watch this, But just
- 42:39Speaker 1: the other night, I'm trying to be sort of relatively
- 42:41Speaker 1: good in what I intake in terms of like, you know, food,
- 42:44Speaker 1: but culture as well. But also gave myself a bit
- 42:46Speaker 1: of an escape. Hats like at the end of the month,
- 42:49Speaker 1: treat yourself or just indulge yourself, just get trashy with
- 42:52Speaker 1: your tastes. So grab some macers because they're advertising the
- 42:56Speaker 1: Bernese Burgers. Like, oh, that sounds fancy. Watched it? What
- 42:59Speaker 1: too bad? It was pretty good? So I got the
- 43:00Speaker 1: you know, I've got the macas meal. It's like, what's
- 43:02Speaker 1: a good compliment for this final destination? Bloodlines on four K,
- 43:06Speaker 1: which I've already seen once before it's like, what did
- 43:09Speaker 1: I what nighting? What did I get you? On?
- 43:10Speaker 2: Four? K?
- 43:11Speaker 1: You got me fade to black right, which I'm is
- 43:13Speaker 1: on the list?
- 43:15Speaker 2: How is that just having on the shove ready to go.
- 43:17Speaker 1: I've got so many special fatures, but I just down
- 43:22Speaker 1: some fast food and no just you, just me. Oh,
- 43:25Speaker 1: I've been over seeing the lovely noise and my hams
- 43:28Speaker 1: are like, yeah, I'm gonna get myself a little midnight snack.
- 43:32Speaker 1: And yeah, watch a watch a gory horror movie is
- 43:36Speaker 1: a good movie. It's really good. I love the final destination.
- 43:39Speaker 2: I've we've got up some before. I want to watch
- 43:40Speaker 2: them all before I get to number six. Yeah, yeah,
- 43:42Speaker 2: four was kind of garbage. That four is not the
- 43:45Speaker 2: good one. I couldn't get through. I'll finished this.
- 43:47Speaker 1: The first three. The first three are really good.
- 43:49Speaker 2: Three d was three yeah, three days yeah, three.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Day was great, four was five is okay? And yeah,
- 43:55Speaker 1: this last one, the sixth one, is really good. I'm
- 43:58Speaker 1: surprised there hasn't been like twenty of them already. Fine,
- 44:00Speaker 1: And it just feels like it's such a basic, simple
- 44:02Speaker 1: concept and you don't just think five creative ways to
- 44:05Speaker 1: kill people done? Yeah, and you're killing people all the time.
- 44:08Speaker 1: You don't have recurring characters in this ship.
- 44:10Speaker 2: We don't have to feel emotionally connected to them.
- 44:12Speaker 1: We just care about how they're dying. Did you This
- 44:15Speaker 1: went online the other day, the trailer of the Scary
- 44:18Speaker 1: Movie reboot.
- 44:19Speaker 2: I've not seen any of it now. I keep seeing
- 44:22Speaker 2: things pop up with what's his name, who's the Waynes?
- 44:26Speaker 1: Waynes?
- 44:26Speaker 2: Yeah, doing interviews and I'm like, Eh, they just wanted
- 44:30Speaker 2: to do that smoking face. Yeah, just that I'm the
- 44:32Speaker 2: high face. I'm like, that's all this has become.
- 44:34Speaker 1: Well, that's all it ever was. Yeah. Yeah, I watched
- 44:36Speaker 1: the trailering oh god, but there's a whole generation people like, yeah,
- 44:40Speaker 1: we can't believe it's back.
- 44:42Speaker 2: That makes I am. I remember Scary Movie one being
- 44:46Speaker 2: a big deal when it came out and we all
- 44:47Speaker 2: really enjoyed it. But then it got to like number
- 44:50Speaker 2: three and I was like, ah, this this is all
- 44:52Speaker 2: you go? Huh oh?
- 44:53Speaker 1: Yeah? But which one had Charlie Sheen and it I
- 44:55Speaker 1: think that might have been three, three or four. Apparently
- 44:58Speaker 1: those movies makes them like major, I'm more than the
- 45:00Speaker 1: screen movies that inspired them. Yeah, there you go. So yeah,
- 45:06Speaker 1: that's something that's something that I watch and really enjoyed,
- 45:07Speaker 1: if you're into that kind of thing.
- 45:09Speaker 2: John Luoney here says, if you and guy were trapped
- 45:11Speaker 2: on an island, how long and who would be the
- 45:13Speaker 2: first one to turn to cannibalism? Expand on this, Boney, buddy,
- 45:19Speaker 2: who would be the first to resort to cannibalism? I
- 45:21Speaker 2: don't think I could kill anybody. I think I could
- 45:22Speaker 2: kill you. I think I think you'd probably have to
- 45:24Speaker 2: kill me. I would say, look, we're going to die
- 45:27Speaker 2: anyway you have me.
- 45:28Speaker 1: I thanks, thanks, buddy. I think we would learn how
- 45:32Speaker 1: to fish. You go for a swim, try and find something. Yeah,
- 45:37Speaker 1: it's funny. Here's another thing I heard just recently, and
- 45:40Speaker 1: I might have alluded to this. I think I probably
- 45:42Speaker 1: actually talked about this in the recent episode. But there's
- 45:44Speaker 1: a new TV mini series of Lord of the Flies,
- 45:48Speaker 1: not Lord of the Rings, Lord of the Flies.
- 45:49Speaker 2: You know that story about the we do a higher school,
- 45:53Speaker 2: do it at school?
- 45:53Speaker 1: Or piggy for a little piggy, But yeah, it's basically
- 45:57Speaker 1: about the kids. Who are you stranding on a desert island?
- 46:00Speaker 1: Whole bunch of little preteen boys.
- 46:01Speaker 2: I think that's what das Bus was a take off
- 46:03Speaker 2: of and they all descend into savagery and they were
- 46:06Speaker 2: not rescued by Mo. And this guy like he's a
- 46:12Speaker 2: modern philosopher named Rutka Bregman, he was talking about this
- 46:15Speaker 2: and he said, yeah, people always talking about, oh, little
- 46:18Speaker 2: boys are savages, and they always cite Lord of the Flies.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Here's an actual thing that happened. A bunch of boys
- 46:24Speaker 2: from a believed Tonga went out on a boat one day.
- 46:27Speaker 2: They did the cartman think of, like, yeah, let's go
- 46:29Speaker 2: play on Uncle Roy's boat. They got lost and they
- 46:32Speaker 2: drifted and they they were about maybe eight of them,
- 46:35Speaker 2: and they ended up drifting out at sea and they
- 46:38Speaker 2: got lost on it and they ended up.
- 46:39Speaker 1: On an I may remember this story. I think I
- 46:41Speaker 1: told you not too long ago. And it was like, oh,
- 46:44Speaker 1: and do they all kill each other and in each
- 46:46Speaker 1: other John Looney style? No, they did not. They all
- 46:48Speaker 1: worked together. They collaborated. They built a little gym so
- 46:53Speaker 1: they yeah, so they could like keep their strength up
- 46:56Speaker 1: and stuff. But they was like, okay, mate, your job
- 46:59Speaker 1: to maintain the fire, maintain the signal path so we
- 47:01Speaker 1: might get rescued. You guys, you're searching for food, okay,
- 47:04Speaker 1: and we'll swap roles occasionally so nobody gets you know.
- 47:07Speaker 2: The Tonguan Castaway, as they're called, a group of six
- 47:09Speaker 2: Tongue and teenage boys who shipwrecked on an inhibited island
- 47:13Speaker 2: in nineteen sixty five and lived there.
- 47:15Speaker 1: For fifteen months.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Fifteen months, the boys ran away from their boarding school
- 47:18Speaker 2: on the island of Tongue Tapoo Tongue Tapoo, stealing a
- 47:22Speaker 2: boat in their escape. After a storm wrecked the boat,
- 47:24Speaker 2: they drifted to the abandoned remote island and managed to
- 47:27Speaker 2: keep themselves in good order for the dureration under the circumstances.
- 47:30Speaker 2: Long thought dead, they were discovered and rescued in September
- 47:33Speaker 2: nineteen sixty six by Australian lobster fisher up Peter Warner.
- 47:36Speaker 1: That is incredible, isn't that great? Yeah, so I get
- 47:40Speaker 1: the veiling, dwann Or, and I would basically set up
- 47:41Speaker 1: a functional society. In fact, we would probably create a
- 47:44Speaker 1: resort that people would want to come to. How did
- 47:46Speaker 1: they eat? What did they eat? I wonder?
- 47:49Speaker 2: Initially they were desperate for food and water, but their
- 47:50Speaker 2: situation improved after three months when they discovered the ruins
- 47:53Speaker 2: of the village of column Mail in the island's volcanic crater.
- 47:57Speaker 2: Following a two day climb, they revived the remnants of
- 47:59Speaker 2: nineteenth century habitation, surviving on feral chickens bananas, and they're
- 48:04Speaker 2: just fed away.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, lifelone's away. Yeah. Tonguans find a way captured
- 48:07Speaker 1: rain water for drinking and they've just they made it work. Yeah, yes,
- 48:12Speaker 1: he've worked it out. It's problem solved. So that would
- 48:16Speaker 1: that would be Dan all night?
- 48:17Speaker 2: Yes, well, i'd hope. So anyway, that's what he makes
- 48:20Speaker 2: me think.
- 48:21Speaker 1: A big bam spice, feral chickens, white work where knocking
- 48:29Speaker 1: on my head?
- 48:30Speaker 2: This one here is from James Umerlane, greeting from Ireland.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Hello James, Hello James. I've been listening to you since
- 48:36Speaker 2: twenty eighteen and I dip in and out of Patreon
- 48:38Speaker 2: when I can afford it.
- 48:39Speaker 1: Thank you James for doing that.
- 48:41Speaker 2: I absolutely love all your different podcasts, so thank you
- 48:43Speaker 2: all for the wonderful content over the years. So just
- 48:46Speaker 2: a question for you about the Simpsons. So if it's
- 48:48Speaker 2: already been asked, but I've been interested in your taking it.
- 48:51Speaker 2: I've always defended the non Golden era of seasons as
- 48:53Speaker 2: they aren't completely shit as some people make it out,
- 48:56Speaker 2: but I always admit that there is a decent there
- 48:58Speaker 2: is a decline in quality. Question to you is was
- 49:01Speaker 2: there a particular episode or a moment that when you
- 49:03Speaker 2: first saw it air it made you go, oh shit,
- 49:05Speaker 2: that wasn't very good at all, now was it. I
- 49:07Speaker 2: can remember vividly watching the Brazil episode, which was very good,
- 49:10Speaker 2: but when Marge did the worry and dance at the
- 49:13Speaker 2: same time, it was honestly like feeling the feeling you
- 49:15Speaker 2: get when you realize that your dad isn't actually a superhero. Anyway,
- 49:19Speaker 2: I'd love to hear what your thoughts about that. Ah,
- 49:21Speaker 2: thanks a million for the excellent content. James, Thank you, James, James,
- 49:24Speaker 2: thank you for that excellent letter. I think for me
- 49:27Speaker 2: it was the episode where Hammah was being reviewed. It
- 49:30Speaker 2: Hommah was being hunted down by an assassin and then
- 49:32Speaker 2: it turns out to be Frank Grimes Junior.
- 49:34Speaker 1: Okay.
- 49:35Speaker 2: I remember watching that for the first time when I
- 49:37Speaker 2: was a teenager and going that shit, just whatever. I
- 49:42Speaker 2: was not a fan of it. Also the Italian Bob,
- 49:45Speaker 2: which I liked when we did a review, but I
- 49:47Speaker 2: remember when we first When I first saw it, I went,
- 49:49Speaker 2: this is the show that I remember it being. I
- 49:51Speaker 2: just remember just not liking those episodes, and those were
- 49:53Speaker 2: the moments for me where I went, ah, yeah, I.
- 49:57Speaker 1: Wish I could think of something specific, But I do
- 49:59Speaker 1: recall a sort of a shift in tone where yeah,
- 50:03Speaker 1: that's that's very much the go too.
- 50:05Speaker 2: But I think that was a rock in a what
- 50:08Speaker 2: would you call it, like a pile not of diamonds.
- 50:09Speaker 2: But it was like that episode wasn't that ear of
- 50:12Speaker 2: the show wasn't terrible, It's just you just don't like
- 50:14Speaker 2: that particular episode that.
- 50:15Speaker 1: Could well be it. Yeah, but yeah, I'm trying to
- 50:18Speaker 1: remember a specific moment or a specific episode, But I
- 50:21Speaker 1: do recall sort of a shift in tone where it's like,
- 50:24Speaker 1: you guys used to sort of set the tone and
- 50:26Speaker 1: you were very much making yourselves laugh in a lot
- 50:29Speaker 1: of ways, and you're trying to keep up with the tone. Yeah,
- 50:34Speaker 1: oh god, I guess I wish I could recall the
- 50:35Speaker 1: specific kind of thing that that made me feel this
- 50:38Speaker 1: was like, are you're trying to catch up? You used
- 50:40Speaker 1: to lead the pack and now it's like I think
- 50:43Speaker 1: they like this. Yeah, yeah, it's a tough one, but
- 50:48Speaker 1: there's nothing where it sucks.
- 50:49Speaker 2: When you see a show that felt like The Powerhouse,
- 50:52Speaker 2: seem vulnerable, Yes and insecure.
- 50:55Speaker 1: Insecure is a good way of putting it.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Yeah, Hello Dano and Guy. This one's from a H. Bewie,
- 51:02Speaker 2: long time listener, first time emailer. Firstly, thanks for answering
- 51:04Speaker 2: my favorite movie of twenty twenty five question on your
- 51:07Speaker 2: Facebook Patreon. I'm sure we would must have a mailbak. Yeah,
- 51:10Speaker 2: we've heard from m Yes. Yes, I might have said
- 51:12Speaker 2: it a bit abrupt when I posted it. I was
- 51:14Speaker 2: in a rush at the time, so sorry about that. Also,
- 51:15Speaker 2: you both nailed the pronunciation of my name. Most people
- 51:18Speaker 2: say it like Ann the Anglo way. Most traditionally it
- 51:21Speaker 2: is pronounced and for simplicity, I just go with an.
- 51:24Speaker 2: So it's Anne as in A and H and as
- 51:28Speaker 2: opposed to N N and and Bwie. Just wanted to
- 51:33Speaker 2: say thanks for all the great podcasts. Four Finger disc
- 51:35Speaker 2: gag going down to South Park speaking of the hill
- 51:37Speaker 2: Bob's pods, you name it. You make my commute and
- 51:39Speaker 2: the open plant offers chaos much more bearable. I've got
- 51:42Speaker 2: another movie question for you. What's your most memorable movie
- 51:46Speaker 2: theater experience doesn't have to be the first time you
- 51:48Speaker 2: watched a movie or anything like that. Mine would have
- 51:51Speaker 2: to be the Return of the King in a dingy
- 51:53Speaker 2: cinema back in two thousand and three. The crowd reactions
- 51:56Speaker 2: were perfect for all the big moments. Another one is
- 51:58Speaker 2: The Dark Knight in two thousand and I can't remember
- 52:00Speaker 2: the last time a cinema felt that tense. Thanks again,
- 52:03Speaker 2: and keep podcasting and.
- 52:05Speaker 1: We certainly will, yes, and keep podcasting. Um, do you
- 52:10Speaker 1: want to go first?
- 52:11Speaker 2: I have memories of going to the it's more sort
- 52:16Speaker 2: of just what it meant to me for that moment
- 52:18Speaker 2: wasn't necessarily the cinema experience. But I remember going to
- 52:22Speaker 2: see Space Jam for the first time. I mentioned this
- 52:24Speaker 2: with my mum and that was the first and only
- 52:26Speaker 2: time that my mum and I went to the cinema
- 52:28Speaker 2: as just us. So I have fond memories of his
- 52:31Speaker 2: going there. And obviously it was full of kids and
- 52:33Speaker 2: it was just whow it's Michael Jordan and the Lynchins.
- 52:35Speaker 2: Kids are having a great time.
- 52:36Speaker 1: And I was there.
- 52:37Speaker 2: There's a said the Sipper cup over there on the bench.
- 52:40Speaker 2: That's the original Space Jam supper cup a little mini
- 52:42Speaker 2: game on topic. You can flicker basketball around. But I
- 52:44Speaker 2: just have these great memories of going to the movies
- 52:46Speaker 2: with Mum and it's just been like, it's just us today.
- 52:48Speaker 2: It's it's not my sister here, It's just us and
- 52:51Speaker 2: it felt special. I remember even though it turns out
- 52:55Speaker 2: in retrospect it wasn't a great movie, but the idea
- 52:57Speaker 2: of lining up for a film isn't something that with
- 52:59Speaker 2: people do anymore. But lining up for six hours to
- 53:01Speaker 2: see Force Awakens, Yeah, absolutely, that felt cool. It felt
- 53:04Speaker 2: like such a community feel of being the first one
- 53:07Speaker 2: is there and just seeing the line get bigger and
- 53:09Speaker 2: bigg and bigger, and just the excitement everyone talking the
- 53:11Speaker 2: line of is going to happen. We're all there for
- 53:13Speaker 2: the same reason, and just you could feel the excitement
- 53:15Speaker 2: in the air just in the line. That was That's
- 53:18Speaker 2: something that I'll always remember.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I think mine. I may have told this story before,
- 53:23Speaker 1: aren't so forgive me? When I was sure, I would
- 53:27Speaker 1: have been fifteen or sixteen. I went to see Back
- 53:30Speaker 1: to the Future at the Forum Cinema in Melbourne. I
- 53:34Speaker 1: knew about it, but I didn't know everything about it.
- 53:36Speaker 1: This is you know, this was nineteen eighty five. This
- 53:38Speaker 1: is near when you didn't have everything spoiling for any
- 53:40Speaker 1: of the basic concept. It's like, oh, he's a kid
- 53:42Speaker 1: from nineteen eighty five who goes back to nineteen fifty
- 53:44Speaker 1: five and gets involved in various shenanigans. Loved it from
- 53:48Speaker 1: the start, you know, it was like, oh, wow, this
- 53:50Speaker 1: is really energetic and funny and all this kind of stuff.
- 53:52Speaker 1: And it goes along, and it goes along and yeah,
- 53:54Speaker 1: looks spoilers back to the future here.
- 53:56Speaker 2: But the Biff moment, Yeah, the Biff.
- 53:58Speaker 1: Moment where you know Biff is, you know, getting a
- 54:01Speaker 1: bit handsy with Lorraine, and they've said up this whole
- 54:04Speaker 1: thing where it's like, oh, Georgian Fly's going to come
- 54:07Speaker 1: in and save the day by pretending to knock out Marty,
- 54:09Speaker 1: except it's Bif there. His bully has been tormenting in
- 54:12Speaker 1: the whole movie. George McFly finally stands up for himself.
- 54:16Speaker 1: I do bat At mefly punches out Biff. It was
- 54:19Speaker 1: a crowded cinema and we just not stood up as one,
- 54:22Speaker 1: but we were like, yeah, just the this is something
- 54:26Speaker 1: that we've lost a little bit in modern movie that
- 54:29Speaker 1: communal experience is just like everybody was just feeling the
- 54:32Speaker 1: same thing. It felt like we were just all parts
- 54:34Speaker 1: of one collective hole. It was fantastic.
- 54:37Speaker 2: Well, I had a similar experience to that kind of moment,
- 54:39Speaker 2: but it was more just a comedy aspect, because comedies
- 54:41Speaker 2: don't really They're very rare these days in the cinema,
- 54:45Speaker 2: and we went anti condas Nicola and I. I messaged
- 54:48Speaker 2: you when we were in. I was like, fucking cinemas
- 54:50Speaker 2: full man, I'm crazy. I haven't been this way for
- 54:53Speaker 2: a long time. And as a moment in the film
- 54:56Speaker 2: where I don't want to spoil anything, but Jack Black
- 54:58Speaker 2: is running away with a pig stretched to his head, right,
- 55:03Speaker 2: and they thought the pig was dead and spoiled. It's
- 55:05Speaker 2: not dead, right, and it's attachment and they're running away
- 55:08Speaker 2: from the anticonda and just the you have to sort
- 55:11Speaker 2: of be there, you have to sort of to see
- 55:13Speaker 2: the film, know what I'm talking about. It's fucking hilarious, right,
- 55:15Speaker 2: But everyone in the cinema was just uproariously laughing. I
- 55:18Speaker 2: was like, like, you said, this is what's missing now
- 55:21Speaker 2: watching films too. No phones are out. We're watching the
- 55:24Speaker 2: movie and we're all enjoying it in a shared experience.
- 55:26Speaker 2: We're all and because we're doing it, it made it
- 55:28Speaker 2: feel funnier as well. I was, we're all laughing together.
- 55:31Speaker 2: It was a real special moment.
- 55:32Speaker 1: And once that happens, it gains a bit of momentum
- 55:35Speaker 1: as well. I mean, going back to that, back to
- 55:36Speaker 1: the future screening, I mean what happens after that is
- 55:39Speaker 1: you know Marty who's been he's had his own difficulties
- 55:44Speaker 1: with like, oh, you know, I want to get up
- 55:45Speaker 1: and play my music, but you know what if nobody
- 55:47Speaker 1: likes it, and he finally gets his chance to be
- 55:49Speaker 1: on stage, and you know, he starts playing Johnny be Good.
- 55:51Speaker 1: Everyone's like, holy shit, this is great. Then he starts
- 55:54Speaker 1: playing heavy metal andone's like, what the fuck is going on?
- 55:56Speaker 1: We just thought it was the funniest damn thing we've
- 55:58Speaker 1: ever seen our lives. Everyone just like, oh my god,
- 56:00Speaker 1: this is so great. Yeah, just this general feeling of
- 56:04Speaker 1: joy and goodwill and happiness. We're all enjoying the same thing,
- 56:07Speaker 1: and we're all enjoying it together because even though none
- 56:09Speaker 1: of us knew one another. I tried to rewatch.
- 56:11Speaker 2: Why I tried, I did I rewatched that clip from
- 56:14Speaker 2: any Conda's just on my phone the other day and
- 56:15Speaker 2: I watched her.
- 56:16Speaker 1: Going Its funny as I remember, But the thing is,
- 56:18Speaker 1: I'm not in a room for people all laughing. You know.
- 56:20Speaker 2: It made that scene feel funny than what it actually was.
- 56:23Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 56:23Speaker 2: Yeah, so that is a good question. And thanks for
- 56:26Speaker 2: that question, Linna's you another one. He just loves it. Yeah,
- 56:29Speaker 2: we love him, we do. But look out, it's coming through.
- 56:32Speaker 2: So it's like a weird format. I can't see. I
- 56:34Speaker 2: can't read it properly.
- 56:35Speaker 1: Is this question all spoilers?
- 56:38Speaker 2: So I'm going to I'm going to copy it, paste
- 56:41Speaker 2: it into a notepad and hopefully we can read this. Sorry,
- 56:44Speaker 2: then you will be right back.
- 56:45Speaker 1: Hang on, there we go. See what I did. I
- 56:48Speaker 1: had a problem and I worked around it. And that's true.
- 56:51Speaker 1: So this is why I wound away. This is not
- 56:53Speaker 1: why we would not kill each other on a designaland.
- 56:55Speaker 2: So Looney says, this is the tagline Simpsons in real life.
- 56:58Speaker 2: Growing up with the Simpsons, we can all find similar
- 57:00Speaker 2: is within the show and things relating to growing up.
- 57:02Speaker 2: Things to relate to growing up. I could not relate
- 57:05Speaker 2: more to Bart and Roden pod I was the evil cousin,
- 57:08Speaker 2: and my two cousins, Tom and Jake were like the
- 57:10Speaker 2: real life Flanders boys. There were weekly calls from their
- 57:13Speaker 2: mother to my father complaining about words that I had
- 57:15Speaker 2: taught them or things that I had said. I was
- 57:17Speaker 2: not an evil or bad kid. They just viewed me
- 57:20Speaker 2: as the sinning black sheep. My father even called them
- 57:23Speaker 2: Rod and Todd whilst were growing up. I could write
- 57:26Speaker 2: endless stories about growing up, but I'll limit it to
- 57:28Speaker 2: one of my favorites. When Guitar Hero came out, it
- 57:30Speaker 2: was massive, and I remember trying to bring it over
- 57:33Speaker 2: and show them the new game and have some fun
- 57:34Speaker 2: with it. The second his father heard the band White Zombie,
- 57:38Speaker 2: he came rushing into the room and unplugged it. The
- 57:40Speaker 2: next time I was over, they told me that they
- 57:42Speaker 2: hate Guitar Hero until I noticed it was a Christian
- 57:44Speaker 2: based Guitar Hero knockoff, so no rock or metal or sin,
- 57:48Speaker 2: only holiness and Jesus. The entire afternoon I was subjected
- 57:51Speaker 2: to audio waterboarding with those songs. All respects said, but
- 57:54Speaker 2: not my cup of tea. Thank you for all that
- 57:56Speaker 2: you guys do and wishing.
- 57:57Speaker 1: You the best. I just love it. It's always like
- 57:59Speaker 1: religious alternatives. It's like, but this, this feels like the
- 58:02Speaker 1: Simpsons could do this. Savior, you have your guitaro, we
- 58:06Speaker 1: have our savior. Savior here. It's like the religious songs
- 58:10Speaker 1: and what would be on there? Can you take me?
- 58:14Speaker 2: That's even too rocky? I think that's too rocky for Flanders.
- 58:19Speaker 1: Creed were sort of Christian, weren't they.
- 58:20Speaker 2: They were?
- 58:21Speaker 1: Ye Striper. Striper was like a Christian metal band, okay
- 58:27Speaker 1: in the eighties. Yeah, Stripper Stripper with a Y. Of course,
- 58:31Speaker 1: there's a why ye Striper.
- 58:32Speaker 2: It's like there's a wrestling team called the Hardy Boys
- 58:34Speaker 2: and Z. Everything was Z the Boys Boys.
- 58:38Speaker 1: Too, men not a delivery service. I mean, I'm aware
- 58:44Speaker 1: of Christian rock, but I can't say any sort of
- 58:47Speaker 1: at least to mind at the moment. I think Live
- 58:49Speaker 1: were a Christian rock band, weren't they sort of? Yeah,
- 58:53Speaker 1: the Dolphins, Crab God. I was into Live for a
- 58:57Speaker 1: minute there. I thought they weren't too bad anyway.
- 58:59Speaker 2: But yes, so that is a good, good story that
- 59:01Speaker 2: I can actually believe happening on The Simpsons.
- 59:04Speaker 1: I didn't know that. I didn't know there was religious
- 59:06Speaker 1: Christian knockoffs of guitar hero. That's amazing, good story, learnie.
