- 0:0718, 1961, the New York Yankees faced the Detroit
- 0:10Tigers for a Sunday afternoon game at Tiger Stadium.
- 0:13The Yankees were managed by Ralph Hout, and they
- 0:15sent lefty Whitey Ford to the mound with a 10
- 0:17-2 record. The Tigers were managed by Bob Sheffing,
- 0:20and they also had their ace in the mound, right
- 0:21-hander Frank Larry, with a 10 -3 record. This
- 0:24audio recording is from the radio broadcast featuring
- 0:26Yankees announcer Mel Allen. The pitching batting
- 0:29ninth and now our national anthem. off at second
- 1:43base, Jake Ward. Billy Bruton in center field
- 1:45batting second. Al Kaline batting third, playing
- 1:48right field. Hitting in the cleanup spot in left
- 1:50field, Rocky Calavito. Norm Cash will be at first
- 1:54base batting fifth. During the catching batting
- 1:57sixth, Dick Brown, the shortstop batting... 7th,
- 2:01Chico Fernandez. Artie Virgil is at 3rd base
- 2:03batting 8th. And Frank Lowry pitching and batting
- 2:069th. The umpires for today's game, Joe Linsalata
- 2:09calling balls and strikes. Frank Umat at 1st.
- 2:12Bob Stewart at 2nd. And Charlie Berry over at
- 2:143rd. We have two 10 -game winners opposing each
- 2:18other today. Whitey Ford has won 10, lost 2.
- 2:21Frank Lowry has won 10, lost 4. Friday has no
- 2:25divisions against Detroit this year, but Frank
- 2:27Lowry has defeated the Yankees twice without
- 2:29losing to them, and as we've told you, he's 125
- 2:31lower stage lifetime. For the Yankees, it'll
- 2:37be Bobby Richardson leading off. Bobby batting
- 2:39.237. Three doubles, two triples, one homer,
- 2:4251 runs batted in. Next is Cleve Boyer, coaching
- 2:52at service for New York. Frank Crescetti in at
- 2:54first. Wally Moses. Frank Strong Larry. His name
- 3:05is Strong. It's not a nickname. He's 5 '11",
- 3:07185 pounds from Northport, Alabama. Here's the
- 3:14windup in the first pitch of the ballgame. Ball
- 3:18on the outside as he curved Richardson. Harry
- 3:22making his 15th appearance of the year, all in
- 3:25starting assignment. There's a ground ball, base
- 3:30hit in the hole to left field. Bobby Richardson
- 3:33opens the ball game with a single to left. And
- 3:41it brings up Cleve Boyle. Boyle, who has been
- 3:45leading off, but dropped to the second position.
- 3:47Tony Kubik, as we showed you, collided with Bob
- 3:49Serb last night. He was... or had the wind knocked
- 3:53out of him. But last night he suffered a little
- 3:56aches and pains, so they put him in the hospital
- 3:59just for observation. He's all right. He'll miss
- 4:02today's game, but I believe he'll be all right
- 4:04for the series in Kansas City. Here's a stretch
- 4:08by Larry to pitch to Boye. He's punted and fouled
- 4:10back strike one. That was not a sacrifice punt
- 4:16in the sense that he squared around. He tried
- 4:18to beat it out. Boyer batting .229, seven doubles,
- 4:22one triple, three homers, and 23 runs batted
- 4:25in. On deck, Roger Maris. Stretched by Larry.
- 4:32Hits to Boyer. Ground ball to third. Virgil coming
- 4:34in up with it. Goes to second base. One back
- 4:36to first. Double play. They got him. And the
- 4:40whole Yankee bench jumps up, and Moses goes out
- 4:42to argue with Humont. The whole Yankee bench
- 4:45rose. There's one man. It was a close play at
- 4:49first. Double play by the Detroit infield on
- 4:53a slow roller. Matter of fact, a short hop to
- 4:55Virgil. He threw off balance, and Jake Wood at
- 4:58second threw off balance, but they completed
- 5:00the double play. Five to four to three. Third
- 5:04to second to first, and here's Roger Marris batting
- 5:07.237. Three doubles, 23 homers, and 51 runs batted
- 5:12in. He takes the pitch outside ball one. For
- 5:18Detroit. Their 67th double play of the year.
- 5:24Marist takes a curve low. Ball two, two and nothing.
- 5:28No score here in the top of the first. Mickey
- 5:36Mantle on deck. Lowry with the full windup. Picks
- 5:40to Marist, outside and high, ball three. We've
- 5:44shown you this before, but it's interesting because
- 5:46the kind of pitches... And management feel Roger
- 5:49Marris more than they do any other hitter in
- 5:52the American League, and have done so even when
- 5:54he was with Kansas City. He hits very well in
- 5:58this spot. 3 -0 pitch over, strike call. Looks
- 6:12like this will not be quite as large a crowd
- 6:14as the previous two nights. Curve high, ball
- 6:17four. Marris gets the base on ball. Brings up
- 6:22Mickey Mantle. Mickey batting 299. Seven doubles,
- 6:28two triples, 20 homers and 48 runs batted in.
- 6:39Dash holding Marris at first with two away. Here's
- 6:42a stretch by Larry. Pitch to Mickey outside ball
- 6:45one. And there'll be a lot of outside pitches
- 6:50to the Yankee left -hand hitters. Short porch
- 6:55in right field for the lefty swingers to swing
- 6:58up. B -25 down the line, and then it doesn't
- 7:01go out very quickly. Straight across. Sure is
- 7:04over strike calls, one -on -one. On deck, Yogi
- 7:08Berra. Two more. Outfield deep around towards
- 7:40right on Mickey. Roger Marris leading off first
- 7:47base. Miring into the set position. And then
- 7:53he steps back off the rubber. Quickly sets himself.
- 7:56The pitch to Mantle is outside. That was a quick
- 7:58pitch. Mick was not ready. That's kind of a tricky
- 8:01play that Larry has out there. He steps back
- 8:03off the rubber and quickly steps back on and
- 8:07delivers the pitch because the batter's normal
- 8:09reaction when he sees him step off the rubber
- 8:11is to relax. It's a legal pitch. It's called
- 8:17a quick pitch. 3 -1 on Mickey. All right, here's
- 8:30the stretch. Sets off the rubber again. This
- 8:31time Mantle is set. Boy, he held the bat back
- 8:34that time. But Larry did not quick pitch him.
- 8:36Now he sets again. Pitch to the ground. Ball
- 8:40faced it in the hole to right field. Now it will
- 8:42only be able to go to second if he had a shot
- 8:45to leap in the air to keep the ball from hitting
- 8:47him. So Mantle singles. That's the second hit
- 8:52off Larry here in the first inning. And it brings
- 8:55up Yogi Berra. Yogi batting 3 -10 has 5 doubles,
- 9:0111 homers, and 28 runs batted in. Natal at first,
- 9:13Maris at second with two outs, a double play.
- 9:15Sure took Larry out of a jam. He's still not
- 9:19completely out of it. But he'd have really been
- 9:22in trouble without that. All right, the infield.
- 9:27Playing deep back on the edge of the outfield
- 9:29grass. Round towards right on Yogi. Pitch to
- 9:33Yogi. Foul back strike one. Yogi was swinging
- 9:37for the fences on that first pitch. On deck is
- 9:40Bill Skarn. This is a big ball game for both
- 9:45clubs. And such should Detroit defeat the Yankees.
- 9:49They'll go three full games ahead of them. But
- 9:52if the Yankees win, there'll only be one game
- 9:53behind Detroit, so actually it means a difference
- 9:55of two ballgames for the team that wins this.
- 9:59Pitch to Yogi, curve high and away, one -on -one.
- 10:04Sun shining brightly down on Tiger Stadium. Flag
- 10:09going straight out from left field to right field.
- 10:15Well, if you get one up in the air, it won't
- 10:16take much to hit it out of here today. strike
- 10:24on Yolk. No score on the top of the first. Maris
- 10:27leading off second. Mantle off first. That's
- 10:32the Yogi. Inside. Ball two. 2 -1 on Yolk. The
- 10:54curve, that's over. The outside corner strike
- 10:56two. Yogi steps back and says the pitch was outside.
- 10:59And he turns around, takes his customary look
- 11:01in the Yankee dugout. Yogi followed that ball
- 11:09right in the catcher's glove and thought the
- 11:10curve went around the plate. We're right on top
- 11:14of the batter here in our broadcasting booth
- 11:15at Tiger Field. He can count on Yogi. Run his
- 11:25lead away. Pitch. Pops in the air. And Norm Cash
- 11:30is running in, under it, and makes the catch.
- 11:34Boy, I'll remember a similar play like that.
- 11:37I'll never forget when Billy Martin scored a
- 11:39ball almost in that same spot. Everybody else
- 11:41was rooted to the ground. And if Billy hadn't
- 11:44have caught it, the Dodgers would have won that
- 11:45ball game. For the Yankees, in the top of the
- 11:48first no run, two hits. No tiger errors, two
- 11:52men left, and the score at the end of one half
- 11:54inning, the Yankees nothing and Detroit coming
- 11:56to bat. You know, one thousandth of an inch doesn't
- 12:00sound like very much, but actually dirt deposits
- 12:02just that thick on the lower walls of your carburetor
- 12:06below the throttle plate can affect the performance
- 12:08of your car's engine, can cause rough idling,
- 12:11frequent stalling, and gasoline wasting. That's
- 12:14why every day, more and more people are using
- 12:17Atlantic Imperial gasoline. found that regular
- 12:21use of Atlantic Imperial gets rid of these harmful
- 12:24deposits. And what's more, Atlantic Imperial's
- 12:27cleaning action keeps new deposits from forming.
- 12:30Use Atlantic Imperial in your car. It's the quality
- 12:34gasoline that cleans your carburetor as you drive
- 12:38and keeps it clean. Whitey Ford out on the mound
- 12:42for the Yankees. He's won 10, lost 2. No decisions
- 12:44against Detroit this year. In lifetime against
- 12:46the Tigers, 9 wins, 7 defeats. Whitey's making
- 12:50his 16th appearance of the year, all starting
- 12:52assignments. This is his third against Detroit.
- 13:00Jake Wood leads off batting .277. 7 doubles,
- 13:046 triples, 5 homers, 27 runs batted in. And the
- 13:08one -two punch of Wooden Bruton in this series
- 13:10has been devastating. Every time you looked up,
- 13:13they were on base. Youngster from Elizabeth,
- 13:17New Jersey. A right -hand hitter. Chokes up on
- 13:18the bat. Whitey Ford's first pitch. Fouled at
- 13:21the plate. Strike one. Johnny Blanchard had a
- 13:25little trouble locating that foul. Landed right
- 13:30at his feet. to last place. That'll catch a look
- 13:36for a foul ball. Yankees have Cleet Boyer at
- 13:42third. Joe DiMessia at short today with Kubek
- 13:46resting. There's a ground ball back to Whitey
- 13:48as he's trying to check his swing. Whitey flips
- 13:50his car and one away. That'll bring up Billy
- 13:56Bruton. Billy batting 260. Eight doubles, three
- 14:01triples, four homers, and 24 runs batted in.
- 14:06No score here in the bottom of the first. Bill
- 14:10Cabaret is coaching a third for Detroit. And
- 14:13over at first, Tom Farrick. On deck is Al Kaline.
- 14:28Here's the windup by Whitey. Pitch to Bruton.
- 14:30Low and away, ball one, as Billy bluffs the button.
- 14:43Boyle way in at third. Whitey's next pitch is
- 14:46foul back in the upper deck. One and one. Ready
- 15:05now for the 1 -1 delivery. Sidearm fastball.
- 15:07One of that popped in the air. Blanchett throws
- 15:09the mask away. Under it makes the catch. Billy
- 15:12Bruton trying to drag a bunt. Popped it right
- 15:14in back of the plate. Two -way, and here's Al
- 15:17Kaline. Kaline batting .288, has 13 doubles,
- 15:234 triples, 7 homers, and 38 runs batted in. Al
- 15:27had a big night last night. Four base hits and
- 15:30five runs batted in. You are now with nobody
- 15:35on, on deck Rocky Calavito. Whitey's pitch to
- 15:42Kaline is in there, strike called. Ward comes
- 15:53back with a changeup in the dirt, and it's the
- 15:55umpire's shin guards after it's bounced in front
- 15:58of home plate, one -on -one. Lensolata takes
- 16:00a look at the ball. Okay. All right, Whitey ready
- 16:16again. The 1 -1 pitch. Line to left field, but
- 16:19right at Yogi Barra. Man, he's got a hold of
- 16:23that one. Right at Yogi. A solid line drive.
- 16:27And Ford sets the Tigers down in order. And the
- 16:30bottom of the first inning, nothing across. The
- 16:31score at the end of one full inning, the Yankees
- 16:34nothing and Detroit nothing. Take a look at the
- 16:41scoreboard. In the American League, Los Angeles
- 16:43is at Kansas City, and they haven't started.
- 16:47Baltimore at Cleveland for a pair. It's nothing,
- 16:50nothing at the end of three and a half. Barber
- 16:52against Perry in the first game. Minnesota is
- 16:55at Chicago for a doubleheader, and they haven't
- 16:59started as yet. Washington at Boston for a pair
- 17:02in the first game. It's Boston 2, Washington
- 17:031 at the end of four. Matthias against DeLock.
- 17:07National League, St. Louis at Pittsburgh for
- 17:09a doubleheader. In the first game, at the end
- 17:11of six innings, it's Pittsburgh 4, St. Louis
- 17:143. Simmons against Friend. Musial -Holman in
- 17:17the second for the Cardinals, and Leppert in
- 17:18the second for the Pirates. Milwaukee at L .A.
- 17:22Single game has not started. Cincinnati at Philadelphia
- 17:24for two. At the end of five and a half innings
- 17:27of the first game, it's Cincinnati 4, the Phillies
- 17:292. Nunn has relieved Maloney. Peretti for the
- 17:33Phillies. Posts and frees have Holman for Cincinnati.
- 17:39Chicago at San Francisco has not started. Bill
- 17:41Skarn leaves off for the Yankees in the top of
- 17:43the second. Moose batting 270. Here's Larry's
- 17:47pitch to Skarn. It's a drive deep to left. That
- 17:49ball's going to be gone. A home run for Skarn
- 17:52in the upper deck. And Bill Skarn reaps out for
- 18:01an outside pitch. Hold it deep in the left center
- 18:03field. Up the deck. The Yankees jump out to a
- 18:071 -0 lead. Horst Garin, his 13th homer of the
- 18:10year in his 41st run batted in. I tell you, that
- 18:15ball jumped out there. Here's Johnny Blanchard.
- 18:19Batting .254. Three doubles, four homers, 13
- 18:22runs batted in. On deck, Joe Demetri. Pitch to
- 18:28Blanchard. Outside, ball one. I bet Larry thought
- 18:34he made a good pitch to Scala that time, high
- 18:36and away. Blanchard takes a pitch outside, ball
- 18:44two. Larry's next pitch is hit deep to right
- 18:59field, going back at K -line, way back. And he
- 19:03can't get it. It's a home run for Blanchard.
- 19:05Johnny Blanchard hits a home run that just cleared
- 19:08the screen in the lower deck in right field.
- 19:12And the Yankees lead 2 -0. Blanchard's fifth
- 19:19home of the year in his 14th run batted in as
- 19:21the Yankees put back -to -back homers together
- 19:23here in the top of the second. It brings up Joe
- 19:27Demastri, who has only been to bat twice this
- 19:29year, with one base hit and one RBI, batting
- 19:32.500. And in batting practice, Joe hit quite
- 19:35a few in the upper deck, in left field. Larry's
- 19:41pitch to Demastri, in there, strike four. As
- 19:44we told you, Tony Kubek spent the night in the
- 19:47hospital. His stomach and side were bothering
- 19:51him, where he ran into Bob Church. There's a
- 19:53swing and a miss at a sidearm curve. Nothing
- 19:56in field. Two quick runs for the Yankees here
- 20:04in the top of the second. Curve is low. Jerry
- 20:20Cassell, a right -hander, loosening up for...
- 20:24The Tigers now. Pitch is low, 2 -2. Just got
- 20:32the report from Bob Fishel on Tony Kubek. The
- 20:34X -ray is proved negative. So he's going to be
- 20:37all right in a day or two. Now the 2 -2 pitch.
- 20:46He checks his swing. It's ball three. Dick Brown
- 20:49thought he had swung. He's arguing with Joe Linsalata.
- 20:54Joe said no, he held up. So it's a full count
- 20:58on Demetri. Yankees leading 2 -0 in the top of
- 21:04the second. A payoff pitch to Joe. A ground ball
- 21:20down the first baseline. And Lowry throws the
- 21:23first not in time. He says that's going to be
- 21:25a base hit for Demetri. Lowry was going to let
- 21:29the ball roll foul. Then when he saw it stay
- 21:31on the grass, he picked it up. Couldn't get rid
- 21:33of it. And Demetri beats it out for an infield
- 21:36single. And that's the fifth Yankee hit of the
- 21:42ball game. Two in the first inning, three here
- 21:46in the second. And it'll bring up Whitey four.
- 21:49Whitey batting 229. One double, five runs about
- 21:53it in. Yankees don't get many chances like this
- 22:06at Lowry. All right, Fossey. Virgil moves way
- 22:10into third base. Cash is holding first against
- 22:12the Maitreys. Here's a stretch by Lowry. Virgil
- 22:17coming way in. Whitey busts it. Foul down the
- 22:20first baseline. Whitey knew that if he punted
- 22:23towards third, they'd have a double play because
- 22:25Virgil was about 10 feet away from him. Whitey
- 22:28looking down at Crescetti, hoping he can get
- 22:30the hit sign because Ford can handle that bat.
- 22:32And with Virgil that far in, Whitey just has
- 22:35to stick the bat out and punch it a little bit
- 22:36to get it by the third baseman. One strike on
- 22:41Ford. Here's the stretch, and here comes Virgil.
- 22:45And Whitey does that, and he bounces it over
- 22:47Virgil's head down the left field line. And a
- 22:50base hit for Whitey Ford. That's exactly what
- 22:53Whitey wanted to do. Bluff the bunch with Virgil
- 22:55coming in. He just suckers that up. Bounced it
- 22:58right over Virgil's head. For a single. Hit number
- 23:03six off Larry. And now Hal Woodershig, the left
- 23:08hander, has joined Jerry Cassell in the Detroit
- 23:1012th half. Whitey Ford can really handle that
- 23:14shot. It brings up Bobby Richardson, who's single
- 23:17a left field in the first inning. Six hits to
- 23:22a Frank Larry in one inning plus of pitching.
- 23:26That's hard to believe with his record against
- 23:28the Yankees. The Macy is second forward at first.
- 23:31Again, the Tiger in here looking for the punt.
- 23:33The pitch. Why, Richardson bunts down first.
- 23:35It's a good punt. Cash throws the third and it's
- 23:38not even close. As a matter of fact, the Macy
- 23:40was on third base when Cash decided to throw.
- 23:45Holy cow. Cash didn't have a chance in the world.
- 23:50To get to Macy, and all hands are safe. The bases
- 23:53are loaded with nobody out, and Cleet Boyer the
- 23:55batter. It goes as a sacrifice for Bobby Richardson,
- 24:03and a fielder's choice. Bobby does not get a
- 24:09base hit, but he is also not credited with a
- 24:11time at bat. The Yankees have the bases loaded
- 24:16with nobody out. They lead 2 -0 as a result of
- 24:20two homers in this inning, one by Starr and one
- 24:22by Blanchett. Cleve Boyer will pass into a double
- 24:25play in the first inning, Nevada. On deck, Roger
- 24:27Marris. Larry with the full windup. Hits the
- 24:40boy a low ball one. into the third base coaching
- 24:51box for Boyle to guard the plate. The 1 -0 pitch
- 25:04is lined out to right field. Kaline going back,
- 25:06tagging up as Demetri and Ford. Here comes the
- 25:10throw into third base and Whitey goes back to
- 25:11second. And it's a good thing Whitey did. Demetri
- 25:14scores on a sacrifice fly. RBI for Boyle. The
- 25:19Yankees now lead 3 -0. Runners at first and second.
- 25:23One out, and here's Roger Marris, who walked
- 25:25in the first inning. K -line made a heads -up
- 25:32play throwing towards third, because had he thrown
- 25:34home, he'd have never gotten to Macy, and Ward
- 25:37and Richardson would have advanced. Another runner
- 25:41at first and second with one out. Roger Marris.
- 25:48who leads both leagues with 23 home runs. He's
- 25:52had 20 homers in his last 32 ballgames. Pitch
- 25:55to Rodgers. Foul going out of play down the left
- 25:58-field line. Strike one. On deck, Mickey Mantle.
- 26:21lead off first and second. It's the Marist round
- 26:23ball. It's down to second baseman Wood who throws
- 26:26to first. He didn't beat it. He didn't get it.
- 26:29He beat it out. Norm Kerr went over to his right
- 26:31to field that ball. Left first unprotected. And
- 26:34Jake Wood fielding the ball had to wait for Larry
- 26:37to get there. And it goes to the base hit for
- 26:39Marist. Man, what unusual plays in this inning.
- 26:45The whole tag of defenses come apart and yet
- 26:47they haven't made an error. The bases are again
- 26:54loaded with one out. And here's Mickey Mantle.
- 26:57And that's the seventh hit off Frank Lowry. As
- 27:00the Yankees have had five hits in this inning.
- 27:04Along with a sacrifice and a sacrifice fly. Mantle
- 27:09is the eighth man to bat in the inning. And he's
- 27:13got the bases full of Yankees. The line up to
- 27:20pitch to Mantle outside ball one. All fathers
- 27:26out there, Maris, Richardson, Ford, and Mantle,
- 27:29they're all daddies. So this is their day, and
- 27:33they're taking advantage of it. And the fellow
- 27:39on deck, that's three boys himself, Yogi Berra.
- 27:41The pitch, ground foul outside of third. 1 -1.
- 27:46I got a lovely Father's Day present today from
- 27:49Little Scooter. His tooth, he lost his first
- 27:52tooth on the bottom, and he said it to me. Guess
- 27:56I'll have to put it on a chain. Wonderful present,
- 28:03though. All right, Larry, into the windup. The
- 28:141 -1 pitch is hit out in a straightaway center
- 28:17field. Billy Bruton under it. Whitey Ford tagging
- 28:19up. So is Richardson. And the throw comes in.
- 28:21The third base, Ford scores. The Yankees lead
- 28:234 -0. On a sacrifice fly to center field, Mantle
- 28:27gets an RBI. And it brings up Yogi Berra. And
- 28:35Wally Moses wants Yogi to take a look at that
- 28:38ball. Lensolata first throw it in. And Larry
- 28:46is arguing with Lensolata. He throws it in pretty
- 28:51hard, too. Yogi has to catch it bareheaded. And
- 28:57Lowry's there, the Yankees getting on him. Two
- 29:03outs. Runners at first and second, Yogi Berra,
- 29:07who popped the first base in the first inning
- 29:09to batter. And he's the ninth Yankee to bat in
- 29:11this inning. Here's a stretch by Lowry to pitch
- 29:21to Yogi. Foul back out of play, strike one. Richardson
- 29:35at second. Marist at first. Four big runs in
- 29:43here in the top of the second. Pitch is over.
- 29:46Strike two. Slips the fastball by Yogi. Here's
- 30:02a stretch. Pitch is filed right in the Yankee
- 30:04dugout. Learn he's got it, good boy. Then it
- 30:06bounces right out. as Larry came in with a side
- 30:32-on curve low. But Yogi got out in front of it.
- 30:53Stretch by Larry. Stretch is outside. Ball one.
- 30:58One ball, two strikes. two -strike pitch. I'll
- 31:19tip off the glove of the catcher back to the
- 31:20screen. The curve is outside the oak, two and
- 31:42two. soon delivering. Yogi swings and hits it
- 32:00high in the air to short left center field. Billy
- 32:02Bruton is moving under it and makes the catch.
- 32:08Oh, the Yankees send nine men to the plate in
- 32:11the top of the second scoring four runs on five
- 32:14bases. No Detroit errors and two men left and
- 32:18the score at the end of an inning and a half,
- 32:19New York four and Detroit nothing. Is your car
- 32:23a late model or a veteran of the highway? whatever
- 32:27its year or type, believe me, it'll perform better
- 32:30when the carburetor's clean. And now you can
- 32:32clean the carburetor of your car as you drive
- 32:35just by using Atlantic Imperial Gasoline regularly.
- 32:39You see, Atlantic Imperial Gasoline was especially
- 32:42designed to remove harmful dirt deposits that
- 32:45form in the carburetors of practically all cars
- 32:47on the lower walls around the throttle plate.
- 32:50Now in time, these deposits can cause rough idling,
- 32:53frequent stalling, gasoline waste. but Atlantic
- 32:57Imperial washes them harmlessly away, generally
- 32:59in just 2 ,000 miles. I hope you'll use Atlantic
- 33:03Imperial in your car. It's the quality gasoline
- 33:06that cleans your carburetor as you drive and
- 33:10keeps it clean. We'll start at the bottom of
- 33:30the second. We'll pause for station identification.
- 33:321460 on your radio dial. This is WOKO Albany,
- 33:35New York. For the best on radio, see the complete
- 33:38program guide in the upstate listening section
- 33:40of today's Times Union. One, fast three. Rocky
- 33:46Calavito leads off for Detroit. Tigers trailing
- 33:504 -0. Rocky batting 282. 11 doubles, 2 triples,
- 33:5517 homers, 44 runs batted in. Calavito is in
- 34:16there. Strike four. Came in with an overhand
- 34:17curveball. to wind up by Whitey. Sidearm fastball
- 35:00fouled back off the screen. Whitey sure has a
- 35:12lot of different motions and not from where he
- 35:16releases the ball. Makes it rough on the hitter.
- 35:29to wind up by Whitey. Pass ball hit high in the
- 35:33air to center field. Mickey Mantle drifting back.
- 35:37Back and makes the catch. Mickey was in and then
- 35:42the wind got a hold of that ball. Once the ball
- 35:44gets above the roof of the stadium here, a pretty
- 35:47good wind blowing. One away, here's John Cash.
- 35:53Cash batting .365. Has five doubles, three triples,
- 35:5719 homers, and 57 runs without an end. There's
- 36:12the left -hand hitter up there with one out,
- 36:14nobody on. Whitey's fastball is taken low as
- 36:19Cash ran up the bunt. on the catcher. There's
- 36:34the 1 -0 curveball. It's high ball two, 2 -0.
- 37:00Fastball is below the knees. Ball three. Three
- 37:02and nothing. Three and nothing pitch. Right in
- 37:19there. Strike call. That was fastball slung at
- 37:33a missed strike two. after falling behind 3 -0,
- 37:57came in with three straight strikes to get Cash
- 37:59looking at the call third strike. Whitey's first
- 38:03strike out of the ballgame. Here's Dick Brown,
- 38:05the catcher, batting .257. Five doubles, two
- 38:09triples, nine homers, and 32 runs batted in.
- 38:14Well, it looks like Larry's going to continue
- 38:16in this ballgame, nobody looping up in the Tiger
- 38:18bullpen. There's the Brown. It's foul down the
- 38:28third baseline. Strike one. Chico Fernandez on
- 38:34deck. Hey, that's 51 ,744 on Friday and 51 ,509
- 38:44last night. Total of 103 ,253. That's the largest
- 38:50of the year for two successive ballgames. One
- 39:01strike on Brown. Whitey's curve is just outside.
- 39:07One on one. Johnny Blanchard doing the catching
- 39:09for the Yankees today. Here's the one -one. Slow
- 39:20curve. Hits down to third baseline. It's going
- 39:22to be trouble. Whitey up with it. Goes to first
- 39:25base. Not in time. It goes to right field. And
- 39:27Brown is going to go to second base. And that
- 39:29will be a hit and error. That'll be a single
- 39:32and an error. Whitey will get an error on the
- 39:35throw. That's the first hit off for it. A little
- 39:40slow roller down the third baseline. So the Tigers
- 39:47have their first baserunner of the ballgame.
- 39:50Here's Chico Fernandez. Batting .248, eight doubles,
- 39:55three homers, 21 runs batted in. Drive is over.
- 40:25Strike called. Stretch. Fastball low. One and
- 40:41one. One ball. One strike. 4 -0 the Yankees lead.
- 40:52Bottom of the second. is over strike two. One
- 41:11ball, two strikes on Chico. Stretch by Whitey.
- 41:24Kicks, delivers. Curve, he swung and missed.
- 41:26He tried to check a swing, but the pitch was
- 41:29down in the dirt. Second strikeout for Whitey
- 41:32and for Detroit in the bottom of the second.
- 41:34No runs, one hit, one Yankee error, one man left.
- 41:37Score at the end of two full innings, New York
- 41:39four and Detroit nothing. I hope you'll use Atlantic
- 41:45Imperial in your car. It's the quality gasoline
- 41:48that cleans your carburetor as you drive and
- 41:51keeps it clean. On the scoreboard, L .A., Kansas
- 41:55City has not started. Baltimore has just tied
- 41:58up Cleveland 1 -1 in the top of the seventh with
- 42:00a homer by Gus Triandos. They're playing a doubleheader
- 42:04there. Minnesota -Chicago prepare. It's 1 -1
- 42:06at the end of two of the first games. Washington
- 42:09and Boston for two games. The Senators now lead
- 42:127 -3 at the end of five and a half. Dale Long
- 42:16homing in the fifth with one on and Long in the
- 42:18sixth with one on. In the National League, St.
- 42:23Louis at Pittsburgh at the end of eight innings
- 42:25is Pittsburgh's five. St. Louis 3. New Zealand
- 42:28Leopard have homered in that ballgame. Cincinnati
- 42:31leads Philadelphia 7 -2 at the end of 7. Post
- 42:35and Freeze have homered for Cincinnati. Chicago
- 42:37and San Francisco is not shot. In the top of
- 42:42the third is Bill Skarn batting. Moose homered
- 42:46in the upper deck and left center field in the
- 42:48second inning. Larry's pitch is outside for one.
- 43:08a double. Calavito up with it, and Curran is
- 43:12in his second with a double. Just over third
- 43:17base. The eighth base hit for the Yankees off
- 43:22Larry in the ballgame. series of the year. That
- 43:37was his sixth hit and 11 times in bat here in
- 43:39this Detroit series. Johnny Blanchard hits the
- 43:43ground ball to second base, fielded by Jake Woods.
- 43:46His throw to catch in time to get Blanchard's
- 43:48scouring moves to third. That was a fine play
- 43:50by the answer at second, going deep in the hole,
- 43:53tearing it with his glove. One away brings up
- 43:57Joe Demastri, who beat out an infield roller
- 43:59in the second inning. The Tiger infield comes
- 44:03in for a possible play at the plate. Right -hander
- 44:12up again in the Detroit bullpen. Here's the wind
- 44:16-up by Lowry. Pitch to Demetri, low and away,
- 44:19ball one. On deck, Bobby Richardson, but due
- 44:23to be the next batter is Whitey Four. Bobby the
- 44:25leadoff man today. Here's Lowry's wind -up. The
- 44:35pitch is swung at a net strike, 1 -1 -1. Joe
- 44:38went after an outside curveball. Steps back,
- 44:42gets a little dirt. Carlin leading off third.
- 44:53Here's the windup. Pitch is fouled to the right
- 44:57of the plate, strike two. One ball, two strikes
- 45:08on Dineshka. Joe gets up ahead of the plate a
- 45:15little bit more now. He just wants to get a piece
- 45:17of that ball. Larry bluffs the throw to third.
- 45:21Standing off the rubber, though. Here's the windup.
- 45:26Fitch is fouled on the right field line and going
- 45:29back in the upper deck out of play. A fan trying
- 45:33to make a lunging backhand catch. Landed a couple
- 45:36of rows back, rubbing his back now. He didn't
- 45:40get it, by the way. Here's the windup. Low and
- 46:02away gets away from Dick Brown, but Skowron had
- 46:04started back towards third and then couldn't
- 46:06come in. That's always a tough play. If the runner
- 46:09is still leaning towards home, he could make
- 46:11it. But once you take one step back to third
- 46:15and then try to reverse yourself, you're in trouble.
- 46:192 -2 on D 'Nessi. The ball only rolled back about
- 46:2310 feet. Here's the wind -up. Pitch, low and
- 46:39away, gets away from Dick Brown, but Skowron
- 46:41had started back towards third and then couldn't
- 46:43come in. That's always a tough play. If the runner
- 46:46is still leaning towards home, he could make
- 46:48it. But once you take one step back to third
- 46:52and then try to reverse yourself, you're in trouble.
- 46:562 -2 on Demastri. Ball only rolled back about
- 47:0010 feet. So he'd have had to get a good jump
- 47:03off third base to make that one. Two and two
- 47:12under Macy. A windup. The pitch. Ground ball.
- 47:19Base hit to center field with a drawn -up infield.
- 47:22Sauron scores. The Yankees lead 5 -0. And here
- 47:24comes Bob Sheffing. And that's all for Frank
- 47:27Lowry. Matri gets the ninth hit off Larry in
- 47:36just two and one -third innings. Larry walked
- 47:41one man, didn't strike out anybody, and has allowed
- 47:43five runs. And this is quite a day for the Yankees.
- 47:51Anytime they can knock Larry out of there, they've
- 47:54really done something. Jerry Cassell is coming
- 47:56in. The mystery now is three for four at the
- 48:08750 batting average. Joe has played very little
- 48:16since joining the Yankees, but he's been a valuable
- 48:18man. Every time that he's been put in the ballgame,
- 48:20he's done something to help the Yankee cause.
- 48:24Almost retired at the end of last year, but was
- 48:28talked back into coming to the Yankees. So Jerry
- 48:36Giselle, who had a promising future with the
- 48:40Boston Red Sox when he first joined them, suddenly
- 48:45lost his stuff and his control and had trouble
- 48:47winning. Went to Los Angeles and now with the
- 48:53Detroit Tigers. He's one of the top -hitting
- 48:57pitchers in baseball. Whitey Ford. And Hal Vudicic,
- 49:17the left -hander, is now up in the tag of bullpen.
- 49:20There's one out. One runner in New York leads
- 49:245 -0 in the top of the third. Whitey Ford will
- 49:27bounce the single over the third baseman's head
- 49:29as Virgil came in expecting a bunt. Whitey has
- 49:35scored once. against the Mastries. Virgil is
- 49:44still in at third. Here's the stretch. Pitch
- 49:49to Whitey. Takes it outside. Ball one. In the
- 50:04stretch. Throw to first and the Mastries back.
- 50:15to Whitey. A fly ball to left center field. Calavito
- 50:18going to his left. He's under it. Rocky makes
- 50:21the catch. That's two -way. Brings up Bobby Richardson
- 50:26who's singled and sacrificed. Bobby one for one.
- 50:54to Macy leading off first. Hits to Richardson.
- 50:57Low. Nice play by Dick Brown. That ball hit in
- 50:59front of the plate. Grouped it up. Pays Cassell
- 51:03a wild pitch. Quick throw to first and Macy back.
- 51:22Again Cassell. Pitch is high. Ball two, 2 -0.
- 51:43Here's the stretch. Pitch to Bobby is in there.
- 51:46Strike call. Two balls, one strike. Nothing New
- 51:59York leading here in the top of the third. First
- 52:02to Bobby, hit in the air to right field. Al Kaline
- 52:05moving under it. Holds it in for the third out.
- 52:10For New York, in the top of the third, they come
- 52:14up with one run on two bases. No Detroit errors.
- 52:16One man left. Score at the end of two and a half
- 52:18innings. New York five, Detroit nothing. If your
- 52:23car had a glass carburetor, you could see Atlantic
- 52:25Imperial Gasoline washing away the harmful dirt
- 52:27deposits that build up on the carburetor's lower
- 52:30walls. But since you can't see your carburetor
- 52:33work, we're going to do the next best thing and
- 52:35invite you to take Atlantic's clean carburetor
- 52:38test. Find out now just how good this fine gasoline
- 52:41really is. Here's how the test works. Use 100
- 52:45gallons of Atlantic Imperial. Ask for a receipt
- 52:48with each purchase. Then if you're not satisfied
- 52:50that you're getting... Better performance from
- 52:53your car? Just mail the receipts to the Atlantic
- 52:55Refining Company. We'll refund the average difference
- 52:58in cost between 100 gallons of Atlantic Imperial
- 53:02and the same amount of regular gasoline. Try
- 53:05Atlantic Imperial. It cleans your carburetor
- 53:08as you drive and keeps it clean. Ozzie Virgil
- 53:27leads off for Detroit here in the bottom of the
- 53:30third. New York leads 5 -0. Virgil batting .188.
- 53:34Has one homer, one run batted in. He's only been
- 53:38up 16 times. Pitch to Virgil is high, ball one.
- 53:59Fastball is low. Ball two. 2 -0. Fastball over.
- 54:14Strike call. Here's the 2 -1 pitch to Virgil.
- 54:28It's in there, strike two, two and two. Marty
- 54:33Ford mixing up his speed beautifully today. Those
- 54:39medium fastball men zips in a buzzer and got
- 54:43these batters all off stride. The 2 -2 curveball
- 54:48is outside, ball three. Full count. and a missed
- 55:05strike three. Whitey curves him on a 3 -2 count.
- 55:09That's the third strikeout for Ford. And Jerry
- 55:15Cassell is coming up. Cassell batting .462. He's
- 55:236 -13. As we told you, he's one of the top -hitting
- 55:30pitchers in baseball. He takes a healthy cut.
- 55:37Pitch to Cassell, curve low, ball one. Terry
- 55:40has two doubles and one home of it here. Two
- 55:42runs batted in. He's a Brooklyn boy, by the way.
- 55:51Curve over, strike one, one -on -one. One out,
- 55:53nobody on. On deck, Jake Woods. If the Yankees
- 56:01can keep Wood and Bruton off the base pass, they're
- 56:03in good shape. Those two guys are a lot of trouble.
- 56:08Curve slung it and missed strike two. Boy, Whitey's
- 56:11getting that curve to the right -hand hitters
- 56:13right in on their fifth. And even if they do
- 56:14hit it, they won't get the good part of the bat
- 56:16on the ball. Slow curve, and he pulled him, and
- 56:25he was way out in front striking out. Beautiful
- 56:28pitch by Whitey after serving up two fast curveballs.
- 56:31He came in with a change -up curve. Whitey's
- 56:34fourth strikeout. And here's Jake Wood, who hit
- 56:39back to the box in the first inning. Hits to
- 56:54Jake inside. Ball one. Billy Bruton on deck.
- 57:06Fastball inside. Wall two. Two -nothing. Whitey's
- 57:26two -nothing. pitch. Low inside. Ball three.
- 57:33Three -and -nothing on the Tiger leadoff hitter.
- 57:44Mantle doing a little stretching exercises on
- 57:46the outfield. Now the pitch. He takes it. Ball
- 57:51four. And that's the first base on ball given
- 57:54up by Whitey. Tiger fans cheer they've only had
- 58:00one other baserunner, and that was Dick Brown
- 58:02in the second inning, who beat out a slow roller.
- 58:05To the box. Here's Billy Bruton, who, in attempting
- 58:09to bunt, fouled out to the catcher. Two outs.
- 58:13Skowron holds first against Jake Wood. Skowron
- 58:20looking in the Yankee dugout to see if he could
- 58:22play halfway or hold Wood on, and he's holding
- 58:24him on. Pitch to Bruton. Low ball one. Just below
- 58:29the knee. Fans yelling for Jake Wood to steal,
- 58:45but they're five runs behind. He's not going
- 58:46to go. There's a strike on the inside corner.
- 58:491 -1. Hit on the ground at second base. Right
- 59:02at Richardson. Bobby to Scarron for the out.
- 59:07For Detroit in the bottom of the third inning.
- 59:09No runs, no hits, no Yankee errors. One man left.
- 59:12The score at the end of three full innings. The
- 59:14Yankees 5 Detroit nothing as we pause for station
- 59:17identification. Scoreboard, Los Angeles at Kansas
- 59:33City. Duren against Bass, just getting started.
- 59:36Baltimore at Cleveland for a pair. In the first
- 59:38game, it's 1 -1 at the end of seven. Barber against
- 59:40Perry. Triandos homing in the seventh to tie
- 59:42it up. Minnesota and Chicago for two. In the
- 59:46first game, it's 1 -1 at the end of three. Cueto
- 59:48against McLeish. New pitcher for Minnesota, C
- 59:53-U -E -P -O. Washington and Boston at the end
- 59:56of seven. It's Washington 7, Boston 5. Dale Long
- 1:00:00homing in the 5th with one on. And Pete Daly
- 1:00:03in the 6th with one on. Before I had said that
- 1:00:05Long had two homers in the game. Had one done.
- 1:00:09Barton homing in the 6th for the Red Sox. Fitz
- 1:00:12Craig beats St. Louis in the 1st of 2 -5 -3.
- 1:00:15Friend the winner Simmons will lose a Musial
- 1:00:16and Leopard homing. Milwaukee at L .A. hasn't
- 1:00:18started. Cincinnati leads Philadelphia 7 -2 at
- 1:00:21the end of 8 -1 -1. None relieve Maloney in the
- 1:00:242nd for Cincinnati. Peretti started green in
- 1:00:27the seventh. Post, Allman in the fourth with
- 1:00:29two on and Freeze in the sixth with nobody on.
- 1:00:31Chicago at San Francisco has not started. George
- 1:00:34Edward Thomas has gone out to play shortstop
- 1:00:37for the Detroit Tigers in place of Chico Fernandez.
- 1:00:42And he will bat in the seventh spot in the lineup.
- 1:00:49He's sixth. and 190 pounds, a big boy for a shortstop.
- 1:00:54His cleat boy hit into a double play and then
- 1:00:56hit a sacrifice fly. Pops up for the shortstop.
- 1:00:59In short left field, Thomas flips the glasses
- 1:01:01down under it and makes the catch. So the youngster
- 1:01:04gets a chance on his first play. And the hand
- 1:01:08the fans give him lead us to believe he might
- 1:01:10be a local boy. But he was born in Minneapolis,
- 1:01:12Minnesota. So I'm wrong there. Attended the University
- 1:01:16of Minnesota. He's a bonus player. Last year
- 1:01:21with Denver and Birmingham, that is 283. That's
- 1:01:2613 homers and 81 runs batted in, though. Here's
- 1:01:29Roger Marris. Walked in single, takes the pitch
- 1:01:31low, ball one. Jerry Cassell out on the mound
- 1:01:34in relief of Frank Larry. Wind up by Cassell.
- 1:01:44The pitch is fouled back off the screen. 1 -1.
- 1:01:58Mickey Mantle. The tail goes to the rosin bag.
- 1:02:07Morris smoothing out the dirt in the batter's
- 1:02:10box. Now they're both ready. Here's the wind
- 1:02:20-up bike at sail. The curve is inside. 4 -2,
- 1:02:252 -1. has taught Cassell a new wind -up. He used
- 1:02:39to have a real herky -jerky wind -up. Fastball
- 1:02:44hit on the ground at first base. Cash is up with
- 1:02:45it. Flips to Cassell covering in time to retire.
- 1:02:48Maris does two away. And here's Mickey Mantle.
- 1:02:52Mickey single right and had a sacrifice fly to
- 1:02:55center. He's one for one with an RBI. 55, Detroit
- 1:03:13nothing, and the top of the fourth. Pitch to
- 1:03:25Mickey, high inside, ball one. On deck, Yogi
- 1:03:28Berra. The next pitch is a curve, low outside,
- 1:03:45ball two, 2 -0. The 2 -0 pitch, curve outside,
- 1:04:04ball three, 3 -0. 3 -0 pitch to Mickey. He takes
- 1:04:23it for a strike. 3 -1. The 3 -1 delivery. Swing
- 1:04:39and a ground foul on the first baseline. Picked
- 1:04:42up by Wally Moses. 3 -2 on Maddox. Full count
- 1:04:52now on Mickey. Connors, who went in a shortstop,
- 1:05:02has played most of his professional ball in the
- 1:05:06outfield. He has had limited service at shortstop
- 1:05:09in the minor leagues. This is his first appearance
- 1:05:11in a major league game as a shortstop. And I
- 1:05:15bet he feels lost out there, too. Playing Mantle
- 1:05:19almost in back of second. The playoff pitch to
- 1:05:20Mickey. Hit on the ground at first base. Cash
- 1:05:22up with it. Flips to Cassell, and he drops the
- 1:05:24ball. Cassell so sure that he had it. Tried to
- 1:05:30grab it one -handed and dropped it, and that'll
- 1:05:32be an error charged to Cassell. Mantle made a
- 1:05:37beautiful punt out of his helmet as he took it
- 1:05:39off. Kicked it right into the Yankee dugout.
- 1:05:44Cassell was quite a football player in high school.
- 1:05:58up Yogi Berra. Yogi's 0 -2 today. Popped the
- 1:06:00first line to center. And now Thomas wants to
- 1:06:04talk with Jake Woods. Possibly on who's going
- 1:06:07to cover if they steal. As we told you, this
- 1:06:09is the youngsters' first experience in the big
- 1:06:12leagues as a shortstop. Madeline first with two
- 1:06:22away and New York leading 5 -0. Here's the stretch.
- 1:06:26Quick throw to first. Mickey's back. The stretch.
- 1:06:39And the pitch for Yogi is outside. Ball one.
- 1:06:57Ben Cassell sets. Pitch is over. Strike called.
- 1:07:001 -1. Yankees got all nine hits and five runs
- 1:07:06off Frank Larry. Larry lasted just two in the
- 1:07:13third inning. On deck, Bill Skowron. All right,
- 1:07:29Mickey leading off first. Quick throw over there
- 1:07:31and Mantle's back again. Another throw over there
- 1:07:43and Mantle's back. Mantle is not taking too big
- 1:07:47a lead either. The tail goes back to the rosin
- 1:07:53bag. Here's his stretch. Pitsy Yogi low and away.
- 1:08:02Ball two, two and one. Now the two -one pitch.
- 1:08:19Curve foul back of the plate. Two and two. out
- 1:08:38of the first night when it was a little chilly
- 1:08:39here in Detroit. The last night and today have
- 1:08:42been beautiful. Two and two on Yogi, two out,
- 1:08:51Madeline's first base. Here's the stretch. This
- 1:08:56is Yogi, a foul back on the screen. in the dirt.
- 1:09:21Full count on Yogi. Three and two. Now Mantle
- 1:09:30will be running with three and two on Yogi and
- 1:09:32two out. Here's the stretch. There goes Mantle.
- 1:09:41The curve is high. Ball four. He lost him. First
- 1:09:45walk given up by Cassell. Madeline's second,
- 1:09:49Barrett first. Here's Garin, who homered and
- 1:09:52doubled, driven in a run scored twice. Mooses
- 1:09:58has six hits and 11 at -bats here in this series.
- 1:10:10Two of those six hits homers. And he's got four
- 1:10:15RBIs. On deck, Johnny Blanchard. All right, Kissel
- 1:10:29stretches. Checks mantle leading off second.
- 1:10:31Pitch to Skarn. Pops in the air in short right
- 1:10:34center field. Jake Wood going back. Mayline in
- 1:10:37and Mayline makes the catch and just misses colliding
- 1:10:39with Jake Wood. Wood would not have been able
- 1:10:43to catch up with that ball, but Kaline, seeing
- 1:10:45Wood in trouble, came charging in and made the
- 1:10:47play. For the Yankees, in the top of the fourth,
- 1:10:51no runs, no hits, one Detroit error, two men
- 1:10:53left. And the score at the end of three and a
- 1:10:55half innings, the Yankees five and Detroit nothing.
- 1:10:59You know, it figures that most things are at
- 1:11:02their best when they're clean. The carburetor
- 1:11:04of your car is no exception. Particles that get
- 1:11:08past your engine air cleaner form deposits on
- 1:11:11the lower carburetor wall. Deposits that can
- 1:11:13cause rough idling, frequent stalling, actual
- 1:11:16gasoline waste. But you can clean your carburetor
- 1:11:20as you drive just by using Atlantic Imperial
- 1:11:23gasoline. Atlantic Imperial dissolves these harmful
- 1:11:27dirt deposits and continued use keeps new deposits
- 1:11:30from forming. Use Atlantic Imperial in your car.
- 1:11:34It's the gasoline that cleans your carburetor
- 1:11:36as you drive and keeps it clean. Fourth inning,
- 1:12:09it'll be Al Kaline, Rocky Calavito, and Norm
- 1:12:11Cash. The power in the Detroit lineup. Kaline
- 1:12:15lined the left field in the first inning. Yankees
- 1:12:215 and Detroit nothing in this third and final
- 1:12:23game of the three -game series. Detroit taking
- 1:12:25the first two. The Ups scored four runs in the
- 1:12:34second, one in the third. Here's Whitey's pitch
- 1:12:44to Kaline. A curve in there, strike four. One
- 1:12:55strike pitch, another curve, line to left field,
- 1:13:06and dropping in there for a base hit. Yogi has
- 1:13:09to play it on the... think of that time. It looked
- 1:13:14like it was going to carry the Yogi and suddenly
- 1:13:16it dropped right down. That's the second base
- 1:13:20hit off for it. Brings up Rocky Talavito, 5 to
- 1:13:24center field in the second inning. ball one.
- 1:13:50Palo Vito has Lentolato to look at the ball.
- 1:13:52Joe finds it okay. Next pitch is a strike as
- 1:14:10Rocky started a swing held up, but the pitch
- 1:14:12had part of the play. 1 -1. Middle points the
- 1:14:26bat out at Whitey. K -line leads off first. Curve
- 1:14:30ball is low ball two. 2 -1. 3 -1 delivery. Fastball.
- 1:15:16Low ball four. He lost him. A -line moves to
- 1:15:24second. Calavito to first. Nobody out. Here's
- 1:15:26Norm Cash who was called out on strikes in the
- 1:15:29second inning. Johnny Blanchard walked out to
- 1:15:32the mound. He gives the ball to Ford. And Jim
- 1:15:35Coates is running out of the Yankee dugout down
- 1:15:37towards the bullpen. He's not loosening up, but
- 1:15:46he's going out there in the event that they might
- 1:15:48need somebody. And yes, he is going to loosen
- 1:15:52up, tells Jim Hegan, getting orders from Ralph
- 1:15:55House. And Coote, Jim Coote is loosening up.
- 1:16:03Pitch to catch, in the dirt. First and second,
- 1:16:17nobody out. Detroit trailing 5 -0. Here's Whitey's
- 1:16:24set position. The pitch is hit high in the air
- 1:16:26to right field. Harris has got rain, though.
- 1:16:29He's backed by the screen under it. Makes the
- 1:16:31catch. K -line tag moves to third base after
- 1:16:33the catch. And Cash barely missed. Getting that
- 1:16:39ball on the solid part of the bat would have
- 1:16:42made this a 5 -3 ball game. Palo Vito held it
- 1:16:46first. Bayline is at third with one out. And
- 1:16:48here's Dick Brown, who beat out a slow roller
- 1:16:51to the mound in the second inning. but Calavito's
- 1:17:21back. Again, Whitey stretches. Curve line right
- 1:17:38at Demetri to throw to first. Double play, and
- 1:17:41Whitey gets out of the inning. Dick Brown hit
- 1:17:44a low liner right at Demetri, and Calavito had
- 1:17:46started to a second, couldn't get back in time.
- 1:17:51So far, Detroit in the bottom of the fourth,
- 1:17:53no runs, one hit, no Yankee errors, one man left,
- 1:17:56and a score at the end of four full innings.
- 1:17:59The Yankees have five runs and nine hits and
- 1:18:01one error. Detroit, no runs, two hits, and one
- 1:18:03error. Right now, I'd like to mention that the
- 1:18:06second half of this game is being brought to
- 1:18:08you by the crisp refresher, Valentine Beer. Your
- 1:18:12first swallow and every one to follow tells you
- 1:18:14why over five million glasses of Valentine Beer
- 1:18:17are enjoyed each day. On the scoreboard in the
- 1:18:23American League, the Angels fail to score on
- 1:18:25the top of the first Kansas City batting. Duren
- 1:18:27against Daz. It's the bottom of the ninth out
- 1:18:30in Cleveland. Baltimore won and Cleveland won.
- 1:18:32The Indians batting Barber against Perry. Triandos
- 1:18:35homing in the seventh. Minnesota and Chicago,
- 1:18:39it's 1 -1 at the end of four and a half. Plato
- 1:18:40against McLeish. Washington leads Boston 7 -5
- 1:18:44at the end of eight innings. Mathias against
- 1:18:47Wills. Dale Long homing in the fifth with one
- 1:18:49on. Pete Daly in the sixth with one on for the
- 1:18:51Senators. Don Button in the sixth with nobody
- 1:18:53on for the Red Sox. The Pirates beat the Cardinals
- 1:18:56in the first of two, five to three. Friend the
- 1:18:58winner, Simmons the loser. Musial and Leopard
- 1:19:00homing. Second game, it's Jackson against Gibbons.
- 1:19:03Milwaukee at L .A. hasn't started, nor has Chicago
- 1:19:05at San Francisco. But the Reds beat the Phillies
- 1:19:097 -2 in the first game. None in relief. The winner,
- 1:19:11Peresia Scott is the loser. Wally Post had a
- 1:19:13two -run homer in the fourth inning. And Gene
- 1:19:17frees in the sixth with nobody on. In the top
- 1:19:27of the fifth, it'll be the bottom third of the
- 1:19:29Yankee order. Blanchard to Macy in four to face
- 1:19:31Jerry Cassell. Blanchard homers in the second
- 1:19:34inning. Bounce to second in the third. New York
- 1:19:38leads 5 -0. Pitch to Blanchett outside. Ball
- 1:19:46one. The sales next pitch is Paul Simpson held
- 1:20:04by the catcher. Strike one. Blanchard. Ground
- 1:20:22ball, base hit to right field. Ward just couldn't
- 1:20:26get to it. Blanchard has his second base hit
- 1:20:29of the ballgame. That's the first hit off Castell
- 1:20:31and the tenth hit for the Yankees. Brings up
- 1:20:35Joe DeMessi who's two for two. Scored once and
- 1:20:38driven in a run. Both singles. Time at bat, DeMacy
- 1:20:48beat out a slow roller down the first baseline.
- 1:20:51And in the third inning, he singled up the middle.
- 1:20:55Blanchard leads off first. Mr. DeMacy fouled
- 1:20:58to the left of the plate, strike one. looks up
- 1:21:29in the bat a little bit. Pitches hit slowly down
- 1:21:33the third baseline. Virgil's going to have to
- 1:21:35hustle. His throw, not in time, and it goes down
- 1:21:37the right field line. Demetri goes back, touches
- 1:21:40first, goes to second, and sending Blanchett
- 1:21:42all the way in. And Demetri holds at second base.
- 1:21:47As the throw comes in at third base. Blanchett's
- 1:21:49caught all the way from first base on a slow
- 1:21:51roller down the third baseline. It's a base hit
- 1:21:53for Demetri, his third of the day, and his second
- 1:21:57infield hit. And also an error charged to Ossie
- 1:22:01Virgil. On his low throw, that went all the way
- 1:22:05down the right field line. So the Yankees now
- 1:22:11lead 6 -0. And the Macy's hitting those tantalizing
- 1:22:18slow ground balls, one down the first baseline,
- 1:22:20one down the third baseline. Which are tough
- 1:22:24plays for the infielders. Here's Whitey Ford.
- 1:22:26Singles and fly to left. Whitey scored one. Stretched
- 1:22:33by Cassell. Hits to Whitey. He takes it for a
- 1:22:37ball. He was ready to bunt. He's getting a pretty
- 1:22:52good workout in his first start this year in
- 1:22:55a ball game. He's taking over for Tony Kubek,
- 1:23:00who has bruised an abdominal muscle. Not serious,
- 1:23:04though. He'll be back in a couple of days. Whitey
- 1:23:06bunts right back to Cassell. He fires his second
- 1:23:08double play. Whitey attempting to sacrifice.
- 1:23:18Hit a line drive, bought right back to the pitcher.
- 1:23:21And it makes me never have a chance to get back
- 1:23:23as Cassell whirled around through to Samus' short
- 1:23:25for the double play. So, two quick outs. Here's
- 1:23:28Bobby Richardson. Single sacrifice fly to right.
- 1:23:38Pitch to Richardson. Low inside. Ball one. Check
- 1:23:51Cleve Boyer. The sales next pitch is popped in
- 1:23:55the air. Ozzie Virgil, the third baseman, is
- 1:23:58moving under it near the pitcher's box and makes
- 1:24:01the catch. But the Yankees manage to pick up
- 1:24:04another run on two base hits and one Detroit
- 1:24:06error. Nobody left. The score at the end of four
- 1:24:08and a half innings, New York six and Detroit
- 1:24:11nothing. Thank you. George Thomas, the youngster
- 1:25:14who went in to play shortstop, leads off for
- 1:25:16Detroit here in the bottom of the set. Thomas
- 1:25:18has been up four times this year without a base
- 1:25:20hit. He's scored twice. Six feet, three inches
- 1:25:23tall, a right -handed up. Yankees six, Detroit
- 1:25:30nothing. That's the time. It's in there. Sight
- 1:25:38crawl. And deep in the box. Siding slow curve
- 1:25:49is outside. Run him out. Oh, he's a big fellow.
- 1:25:54Big shoulders. Try to check the swing and fouled
- 1:26:05it off. Strike two. One ball, two strikes. and
- 1:26:33the Tiger does out. Now holds with one ball,
- 1:26:38two strikes. All right, right at the end of the
- 1:26:56windup. A curve low, strike three. He went after
- 1:27:00a bad pitch. He chalks up his fifth strikeout.
- 1:27:07Al Wodosik, a left -hander, now joins Bruce in
- 1:27:10the bullpen. Here's Artie Virgil, who struck
- 1:27:12out in the third inning. Fitz to Virgil. Filed
- 1:27:23on the right -field line. Strike one. Back in
- 1:27:26the upper deck. Cleveland has come up with a
- 1:27:29run in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Baltimore
- 1:27:302 -1. between Steve Barber and Jim Perry, Perry
- 1:27:39the victor. So if Cleveland wins and the Yankees
- 1:27:51beat Detroit, there'll be a flat -footed tie
- 1:27:54for first place between Detroit and Cleveland,
- 1:27:56and the Yankees will be one game behind both
- 1:27:58of them, which will be a pretty good spot as
- 1:28:01New York goes to Kansas City for four games.
- 1:28:04Minnesota 3 and Los Angeles 3. One strike. Curveball
- 1:28:11fouled back in the upper deck. Nothing in two.
- 1:28:30It's curve low. He swings and misses. Boy, Whitey
- 1:28:32has got that curve ball breaking down around
- 1:28:35the two tops and in on them, and they're all
- 1:28:36going for it. That's their sixth strikeout. And
- 1:28:41let's see. Now Jerry Casale is going to come
- 1:28:43up and bat for himself. Casale struck out in
- 1:28:50the third inning. Whitey struck out two in the
- 1:28:53second, two in the third, and two here in the
- 1:28:55fifth. Mighty's first pitch to conceal is a low
- 1:29:14ball one. On deck, Jake Woods. Mighty's fastball
- 1:29:30is in there, strike four. Fighting first pitch
- 1:29:52to Cassell. It's a low ball one. On deck, Jake
- 1:30:05Woods. Fighting fast forward in there. Strike
- 1:30:09called. The curve and strike call right around
- 1:30:27the letter. One ball, two strikes. Curvy swings
- 1:30:45and misses at a ball in the dirt. Blackett picks
- 1:30:48it up and tags himself. And Whitey Ford strikes
- 1:30:51out the side here in the bottom of the fifth
- 1:30:52inning. 7, strikeouts for Whitey. Nothing, of
- 1:30:56course. For Detroit in the bottom of the fifth
- 1:30:59and the score at the end of 5 -4 -0 is the New
- 1:31:02York 6. Detroit nothing, and we pause for station
- 1:31:05identification. 1460 on your radio dial. This
- 1:31:09is W .O .K .O. Albany, New York. The Upstate
- 1:31:12Living section of today's time union will give
- 1:31:14you a complete program guide to the facts on
- 1:31:17radio. The time is 3 minutes before 4. As I told
- 1:31:22you in that Baltimore -Cleveland game, the Indians
- 1:31:25defeated Baltimore 2 -1. Both pitchers picked
- 1:31:27five hitters. Bob up a ball, a more parry for
- 1:31:29Cleveland. The Andos had the only home in that
- 1:31:32ballgame in the seventh inning. Los Angeles failed
- 1:31:36to score on the top of the first. Kansas City
- 1:31:38batting. Kansas City came up with two runs in
- 1:31:44the bottom of the first inning and lead Los Angeles
- 1:31:462 -0. 2 -1 White Sox, 1 at the end of 5. Plato
- 1:31:50against Nick Lick. Washington came up with 5
- 1:31:53in the top of the ninth to lead 12 -5, playing
- 1:31:56the bottom of the ninth. Mathias against Will.
- 1:31:58Willie Teresby homing in the ninth with a baser
- 1:32:00throw. Dale Long homing with a man on and Pete
- 1:32:03Daly with a man on. Dunn -Burton had one with
- 1:32:05nobody on for the Red Sox. Pirates beat the Cardinals
- 1:32:085 -3. Friend the winner, Simmons the loser. New
- 1:32:10Zealand Leopard homing. Second game is Jackson
- 1:32:12against Gibbon. Milwaukee at L .A. and Chicago
- 1:32:15at San Francisco has not started. Cincinnati
- 1:32:17won the first game of a doubleheader over the
- 1:32:19Philly. 7 -2, none the winner for us. We have
- 1:32:21to lose a post and freeze on the post with 2
- 1:32:23-1. Cleet Boyer leads off for the Yankees in
- 1:32:27the top of the sixth. Boyer hit into a double
- 1:32:29play. Had a sacrifice by the right field and
- 1:32:32popped to short. The Philly's first fifth is
- 1:32:41a curve in their strike call. Enjoyed nothing.
- 1:32:55Another curve. This one's inside. 1 -1. 1 -1
- 1:33:12curve. Swung at a miss. Strike two. One ball,
- 1:33:17two strikes. ball up the middle, a base hit.
- 1:33:36Boyer reached out for an outside pass, and he's
- 1:33:38going to try it to two, then he holds up. Gruden
- 1:33:40was a little slow in picking the ball up, and
- 1:33:42Boyer got almost half way to second, then turned
- 1:33:44around and came back. Third hit off Castrell,
- 1:33:4912th Yankee hit of the ball game. Here's Roger
- 1:33:51Marris, walked, singled, and bounced the first.
- 1:34:05Mr. Roger, there's a foul stood back on the screen.
- 1:34:07Strike one. Strike. And the curve hit foul outside
- 1:34:27of first. Strike two. Norm Cash backhand of the
- 1:34:31ball in foul territory. And the fans give him
- 1:34:33a hand. And Cash hits the stop. strike is fair.
- 1:35:01This is popped in the air to the infield. Jake
- 1:35:04Wood, the second baseman, calling for it. He's
- 1:35:07under it, and then backs up to make the catch.
- 1:35:10One away. Brings up Mickey Mantle. Mickey's single,
- 1:35:14hit a sacrifice fly to center, and reached on
- 1:35:16an error. One for two. Mickey is a curve outside.
- 1:35:39Ball one. Mickey fly out right after the ball
- 1:35:44game to Kansas City. Mickey takes a pitch on
- 1:35:53the inside corner. Strike one. One and one. to
- 1:36:13knock a bug off his uniform shirt. 1 -1 on Mickey,
- 1:36:21one out. in the Yankee batting order has a base
- 1:36:51hit except the next man on deck, Yogi Bra. His
- 1:36:54connect is low and he checks his swing in time.
- 1:36:58Three more now, Mickey. Jerry Cassell will relieve
- 1:37:16Frank Lowry in the third inning. on for Detroit.
- 1:37:23The Yankees having one of their infrequent good
- 1:37:26days against Detroit with Larry pitching the
- 1:37:33pitch to Madler as it strikes as he curves him
- 1:37:35on a 3 -1 pitch toward the outside corner. 3
- 1:37:43-2. Boyle looking at Frank Crescetti. He's going
- 1:37:48to be running with the 3 -2 count. Only one out.
- 1:37:51New York leads 6 -0. Top of the sixth. High ball
- 1:38:01leading away at first. Here's the stretch. He
- 1:38:03doesn't go. The ball is hit high in the air to
- 1:38:06center field. Bruton and K -line converging.
- 1:38:09And look out. And Bruton makes the catch with
- 1:38:12K -line kneeling right alongside of him. Yogi
- 1:38:19Berra. Yogi pops the first fly to center and
- 1:38:22walks. That's the yogi. Right. Curve roll above
- 1:38:58the knees. That's the sail set. Switch outside.
- 1:39:17One of one. Go to first base. Warrior back. Strike
- 1:39:37on the outside corner. Yogi steps back and says,
- 1:39:40is that a strike? No, Lynch allowed it there.
- 1:39:43Yes, it is. One ball, two strikes. Keep it part
- 1:40:14of the park. So for the Yankees in the top of
- 1:40:18the sixth, no runs, one hit. No Detroit errors,
- 1:40:21one man. Let's score at the end of five and a
- 1:40:23half. Yankees six, Detroit nothing. With your
- 1:40:55first swallow and every run that follows, today's
- 1:40:58Valentine delivers a sunny, mellow taste that
- 1:41:01really refreshes. Drink people no quality when
- 1:41:03they taste it. Over five million glasses of Valentine
- 1:41:06beer are enjoyed every day. Oh, my God. the top
- 1:41:36of the Detroit batting order for that third look
- 1:41:38at Whitey Ford. Jake Wood, Billy Bruton, and
- 1:41:40now Kaline. Wood is back to the box and walks.
- 1:42:34Took out the side last inning. He has seven strikeouts.
- 1:42:39Strike three. And that's four consecutive strikeouts
- 1:42:42for Whitey. And I'm certain he's striking out
- 1:42:44these right -hand hitters with that curveball
- 1:42:46low and inside. And that's as tough a pitch to
- 1:42:52hit as any. Here's Billy Bruton. Foul to the

- 2:14:26best. folks like it. You ever stop to think why
- 2:14:31you prefer one brand over others? Could be because
- 2:14:34you think one beer is lighter because there's
- 2:14:36the flavor you want. If that's true, then you've
- 2:14:39got twice as much reason for switching to today's
- 2:14:42Valentine beer. You see, Valentine beer is light,
- 2:14:45refreshingly light as you like it. But of course,
- 2:14:49there's more. Valentine has combined its lightness
