- 0:00Law enforcement was having a startling realization of their own as well.
- 0:05They had come to the conclusion that Hollywood would not go down without a fight.
- 0:11Their assessment was correct, as if they'd known his precise thoughts.
- 0:17Listen, no matter what, let your own hand be the hand of fate, and never let your enemy dictate your fate.
- 0:28Scott said when hiking in the Olympics at the top of Mount Washington.

- 0:43Hi Cassie.
- 0:44Hi Caitlyn.
- 0:45Hi creepy people.
- 0:46Hello.
- 0:47Hello.
- 0:48Sorry my hand was stuck in my blankie here.
- 0:51Oh, wrapped up nice and cozy.
- 0:54So cozy and my blankie that Caitlyn made me.
- 0:57I might it.
- 0:58I love it.
- 0:59And I matched the background.
- 1:02Yeah, you're very, you're on the theme that currently is appearing.
- 1:09Anywhosal, this is PNW Haunts and Homicides, where we chat about true crime, the paranormal, Cassie's blanket, you know, whatever strikes our fancy.
- 1:21And where?
- 1:22Where do we, where do we talk about these things?
- 1:25I think PNW.
- 1:26You should say the Pacific Northwest.
- 1:28Pacific Northwest.
- 1:29Or the PNW if you're nasty.
- 1:31Oh my god, I'm saying this under duress, which also is very on theme for today.
- 1:37So you're welcome.
- 1:39We also do a tarot reading at the end of every episode or just a little deeper insight into our topic.
- 1:46Yeah, so stick around.
- 1:48If you're into that.
- 1:49If you're into it.
- 1:50Getting here.
- 1:51Getting my cozy blankie.
- 1:53Come snuggle, have a drink.
- 1:56Just have a cuddle.
- 1:58Have a cuddle.
- 1:59A cuddle.
- 2:00Cheers.
- 2:01Ooh.
- 2:02Snoop's bubbles taste amazing.
- 2:05Yeah.
- 2:06All right, I'm going to get right into it.
- 2:09Okay.
- 2:10Already.
- 2:11I'm ready.
- 2:12Seven minutes in.
- 2:13Let's go.
- 2:14Yeah.
- 2:15That's fine.
- 2:16Okay, listen, I had to open that explosive bottle.
- 2:19Yeah, it won't be technically seven minutes as you guys are listening.
- 2:22But.
- 2:23Exactly.
- 2:24Scott Scurlock was born March 5th, 1955 in Maryland.
- 2:31He grew up with a loving family in Virginia and had one sister named Suzanne.
- 2:38His mother was a teacher for special needs children and his father was a preacher.
- 2:44Oh, wow.
- 2:45Yeah.
- 2:46So far.
- 2:51My next sentence, which perhaps makes the trajectory of his adult life all the more surprising.
- 2:58Before long, the kids he'd grown up with were headed off to college, including his friend, Kevin Myers.
- 3:06Though Scott would follow Kevin to the island in 1974, he wasn't nearly as academically inclined
- 3:14as his friend who moved there to attend the University of Hawaii.
- 3:19Yeah.
- 3:20Okay.
- 3:21I was like, what island are you talking about?
- 3:24The island who shall not be named.
- 3:27Because I will never go there.
- 3:30Oh, well, come on.
- 3:32Volcanoes.
- 3:33Volcanoes.
- 3:34Volcanoes.
- 3:35They were reportedly lived and worked on a tomato farm there until their secret marijuana
- 3:41grow up was discovered.
- 3:43Okay.
- 3:44I feel like there's a lot of words in that sentence that don't feel quite right.
- 3:50I don't think of tomatoes from Hawaii.
- 3:54Yeah.
- 3:55But I'm sure a lot of things are grown there.
- 3:57But like they just need like a warm environment, right?
- 4:00I, yeah.
- 4:01Yeah.
- 4:02Warm ish.
- 4:03Yeah.
- 4:04Yeah.
- 4:05Yeah, they do thrive in kind of like the California climate, obviously in Italy.
- 4:10Yeah.
- 4:11We go tomatoes here.
- 4:12I mean, it's not like, yeah.
- 4:14Very seeds of summer.
- 4:15Yeah.
- 4:16I'm liking this marijuana farm though.
- 4:21Yeah.
- 4:22Real green.
- 4:23Yeah.
- 4:24Yeah.
- 4:25By 1978, Scott was attending Evergreen College.
- 4:31Along with another friend, Mark Biggins, the college community captures a smaller town feel
- 4:38than you might find in say Seattle, though it's still characterized by an earthy progressive
- 4:45vibe because it's like Auburn.
- 4:47Oh, okay.
- 4:48I was like, wait, is this evergreen in Hawaii or is this Washington?
- 4:52He's back in Washington.
- 4:53Yeah.
- 4:54That whole thing with the, you know, living on the tomato farm, but growing a different plant,
- 4:59I didn't really pan out that well.
- 5:01I can't imagine why.
- 5:02Yeah, I know.
- 5:03Zar.
- 5:04Suzanne Skirlach, his sister, described her brother Scott as an adrenaline junkie.
- 5:11Given his body academic track record and previous entrepreneurial endeavor, it may come as a surprise
- 5:18that at one point Scott aspired to become a doctor.
- 5:23Wow.
- 5:24Yeah.
- 5:25That's aspirational.
- 5:26Yes.
- 5:27Lofty goes.
- 5:29However, that ambition fell by the wayside when he began working in the chemistry lab.
- 5:35Okay.
- 5:36Oh, what's he learning to make?
- 5:41He would go from being a single course away from finishing his undergrad in chemistry and
- 5:46biology according to his sister to being unceremoniously banished from the campus.
- 5:55This was following the discovery that he had been making meth in the college's lab.
- 6:00That's the first thing I thought of when you said chemistry.
- 6:03Yeah.
- 6:04Yes.
- 6:05Yep.
- 6:06It's a real breaking bad moment.
- 6:07Oh, that's so dangerous in the schools or not.
- 6:10It wasn't a school.
- 6:11It wasn't a school.
- 6:12Yeah.
- 6:13In the school's lab.
- 6:14The college's chemistry lab.
- 6:15Holy shit.
- 6:16Yes.
- 6:17It is very dangerous.
- 6:20He continued manufacturing meth and gradually gained a reputation for producing a remarkably
- 6:25pure product that many said was unrivaled at the time.
- 6:30So very reminiscent of what you're right.
- 6:33I've only seen a few episodes, but that sounds just like it.
- 6:37Yes.
- 6:38Yeah.
- 6:39Minus the cancer so far.
- 6:40But you know, yes.
- 6:42Exactly.
- 6:43Eventually, he bought a property deep in the woods of Washington state near Olympia, where
- 6:50he built a tree house as well as a barn where the cooking was done.
- 6:57A literal tree house.
- 6:58Yes.
- 6:59A literal tree house.
- 7:00That's so cool.
- 7:01I will show you some pictures.
- 7:04Okay.
- 7:05I was just thinking the other day about how he wanted to live in a tree house.
- 7:10Yeah.
- 7:11Yep.
- 7:12Maybe not his.
- 7:13Yeah.
- 7:14I just want to live in like a really nice tree house.
- 7:17Yeah.
- 7:18No, a really nice tree.
- 7:19This was not a not.
- 7:21It wasn't a bad tree house per se, but okay, I'm going to send you the pictures.
- 7:28Oh, whoa.
- 7:29Yeah.
- 7:30Whoa.
- 7:31Yeah.
- 7:32He built this.
- 7:33Yes.
- 7:34That is crazy.
- 7:35Yeah.
- 7:36Okay.
- 7:37We're going to talk some more about the tree house.
- 7:39I mean, it looks a little shanky.
- 7:41Shanky?
- 7:42What?
- 7:43Janky.
- 7:44Looks a little shanky.
- 7:45I mean.
- 7:46Yeah.
- 7:47But that's, I'll tell you more about it, then maybe save your official assessment for the
- 7:53pod.
- 7:54It just looks elaborate.
- 7:56Yes.
- 7:57Definitely.
- 7:58Definitely.
- 7:59And he did have a lot of help.
- 8:01Okay.
- 8:02Yeah.
- 8:03The place was built around seven huge cedar trees, about 40 feet up with a gorgeous view of Mount
- 8:09Rainier.
- 8:10Seriously, the view, I mean, to die for.
- 8:14Wow.
- 8:15Absolutely incredible.
- 8:16Mark, his friend, who he went to Evergreen College with, and his daughter came to live in the tree
- 8:22house with Scott when Mark's marriage ended.
- 8:25Obviously, this was far from a traditional dwelling.
- 8:29Yeah.
- 8:30Yeah.
- 8:31When you see the pictures, you know, I inclined to think that you will agree.
- 8:36Aside from the remarkable bird's eye view, the tree house also reportedly boasted an extra large
- 8:43fireplace because, do I, that seems dangerous.
- 8:48I'd listen.
- 8:49Lots of houses are built from wood.
- 8:51Yeah.
- 8:52And around trees, but just like in a tree, I don't know something about that.
- 8:55It feels a little bit weird.
- 8:56Yeah.
- 8:57Yeah.
- 8:58An outdoor bathroom complete with a large bathtub, as well as an emergency escape zip line.
- 9:05Wow.
- 9:06Should it do it?
- 9:08Yeah.
- 9:09We thought of everything.
- 9:10Really did.
- 9:11Scott's Woodland Peter Pan lifestyle was in stark contrast to the norm of the era, for sure.
- 9:18Early 1990s Seattle was an exciting place with lots of booming businesses.
- 9:23Amazon, Microsoft, Starbucks, and the like had begun joining the ranks of warehouse and Boeing.
- 9:30Ooh, we've heard of them.
- 9:32Yeah.
- 9:33Sure have.
- 9:34Also, 90s Seattle.
- 9:35French music.
- 9:36It's a vibe.
- 9:37Ooh, that's so funny, my next sentence.
- 9:42The city also had a booming grunge slash punk rock scene.
- 9:44Scott would meet with Captain Pat in the forested area up on his property.
- 9:49Pat was referred to as the finance man to transfer money and product.
- 9:55AKA, math in case anyone got lost.
- 9:59Captain Pat the finance man.
- 10:02Got it.
- 10:03Scott would bring 180 pounds of product and his counterpart would hand off $2 million.
- 10:12That's a lot.
- 10:14It's a lot of a lot of things.
- 10:16I don't know how much math weighs.
- 10:18Like, it seems like it would be pretty heavy, right?
- 10:21Well, I mean, either way, 180 pounds of it.
- 10:24Yeah.
- 10:25It's a lot.
- 10:26And $2 million.
- 10:27$2 million.
- 10:28In the early 90s.
- 10:29Pat had been the one to introduce Scott to Matt.
- 10:33So, you know, nice guy.
- 10:35Yeah.
- 10:36Once the connections made, you know, business deals and whatnot.
- 10:41After Pat took care of the pickup with Scott, he'd take it down to Barstow to sell it to the hell's angels.
- 10:47They be method.
- 10:49They be.
- 10:50Oh, girl, they be met the real hard, especially in this era.
- 10:54Your captain Pat was murdered in 1990.
- 10:58Scott was devastated and decided that the meth business was just too dangerous for him.
- 11:03Yeah, I thought you're a finance guy.
- 11:05Yeah.
- 11:06So, I mean, the 80s, early 90s.
- 11:10Yeah.
- 11:11I mean, still a very dangerous time for people in that line of work.
- 11:16What a funk.
- 11:18In the early 90s, Scott and Mark were in the same place.
- 11:26In the early 90s, Scott and Mark were in the same place.
- 11:30And they were in the same place.
- 11:32And they were in the same place.
- 11:34And they were in the same place.
- 11:36And they were in the same place.
- 11:37And they were in the same place.
- 11:38And they were in the same place.
- 11:39And they were in the same place.
- 11:40And they were in the same place.
- 11:41And they were in the same place.
- 11:42And they were in the same place.
- 11:43And they were in the same place.
- 11:44And they were in the same place.
- 11:45And they were in the same place.
- 11:46And they were in the same place.
- 11:47And they were in the same place.
- 11:48And they were in the same place.
- 11:49And they were in the same place.
- 11:50And they were in the same place.
- 11:51And they were in the same place.
- 11:52And they were in the same place.
- 11:53And they were in the same place.
- 11:54And they were in the same place.
- 11:55And they were in the same place.
- 11:56And they were in the same place.
- 11:57And they were in the same place.
- 11:58And they were in the same place.
- 11:59And they were in the same place.
- 12:00And they were in the same place.
- 12:01And they were in the same place.
- 12:02And they were in the same place.
- 12:03And they were in the same place.
- 12:04And they were in the same place.
- 12:05And they were in the same place.
- 12:06And they were in the same place.
- 12:07And they were in the same place.
- 12:08And they were in the same place.
- 12:09And they were in the same place.
- 12:10And they were in the same place.
- 12:11And they were in the same place.
- 12:12And they were in the same place.
- 12:13And they were in the same place.
- 12:14And they were in the same place.
- 12:15And they were in the same place.
- 12:16And they were in the same place.
- 12:17And they were in the same place.
- 12:18And they were in the same place.
- 12:19And they were in the same place.
- 12:20And they were in the same place.
- 12:21And they were in the same place.
- 12:22And they were in the same place.
- 12:23And they were in the same place.
- 12:24And they were in the same place.
- 12:25And they were in the same place.
- 12:26And they were in the same place.
- 12:27And they were in the same place.
- 12:28And they were in the same place.
- 12:29And they were in the same place.
- 12:30And they were in the same place.
- 12:31And they were in the same place.
- 12:32And they were in the same place.
- 12:33And they were in the same place.
- 12:34And they were in the same place.
- 12:35And they were in the same place.
- 12:36And they were in the same place.
- 12:37And they were in the same place.
- 12:38And they were in the same place.
- 12:39And they were in the same place.
- 12:40And they were in the same place.
- 12:41And they were in the same place.
- 12:42And they were in the same place.
- 12:43And they were in the same place.
- 12:44And they were in the same place.
- 12:45And they were in the same place.
- 12:46And they were in the same place.
- 12:47And they were in the same place.
- 12:48And they were in the same place.
- 12:49And they were in the same place.
- 12:50And they were in the same place.
- 12:51And they were in the same place.
- 12:52And they were in the same place.
- 12:54I didn't have a lot of notes for them.
- 12:56Beyond the obvious, which is, you know, don't rob banks.
- 12:59They changed their likeness and swapped vehicles,
- 13:02which tends to at least confuse
- 13:04or temporarily slow down an investigation.
- 13:07So far, I mean,
- 13:10How do we know it was a mask?
- 13:13What if it was just Ronald Reagan?
- 13:16I think at this point, Ronald Reagan,
- 13:20I think he was spending a lot of time sundowning.
- 13:25Again, not going to fact check on that front,
- 13:28because I like my ridiculous questions.
- 13:31Okay.
- 13:32No, I love the question.
- 13:34But trying to defend like the answer is like, so.
- 13:40Yeah.
- 13:41Would they like the people who started like the same owner drugs things?
- 13:44Yes.
- 13:45Yeah.
- 13:46Sure.
- 13:46Where?
- 13:47That's funny.
- 13:48Yeah.
- 13:49Dare to say no to drugs.
- 13:51Regarding this initial robbery,
- 13:53two versions of how it played out emerged,
- 13:56depending on who was telling the story.
- 13:59One version said that Scott went in,
- 14:02Mark followed.
- 14:04Then when the latter man's nerves took over,
- 14:07he clumsily shouted for everyone to get down,
- 14:10which Scott quickly countered,
- 14:12instructing everybody to stand up,
- 14:15which is an actual nightmare,
- 14:17because what the fuck do you do in that situation?
- 14:20People just want to follow the instructions
- 14:22and make it out relatively unscathed.
- 14:25Yeah.
- 14:26Just like, I don't care what I need to do.
- 14:28Just don't kill me.
- 14:29Yeah.
- 14:30That's like a really fucked up version of Squid Game or something.
- 14:33Oh my god.
- 14:34Now, in an alternate version,
- 14:36Mark remembered things differently,
- 14:39believing that everyone had already been down on the ground
- 14:42as he made his way, trailing after Scott.
- 14:45And it doesn't really make a lot of sense,
- 14:47because I don't know why people would already be down on the ground,
- 14:50unless Scott went in that much further ahead of him.
- 14:55Right.
- 14:56Like, what are you loitering at the door?
- 14:58I don't--
- 14:59I feel like--
- 15:00I feel like the first one.
- 15:02Let's let that guy go in first, right?
- 15:05A little bit.
- 15:07What was I like?
- 15:08Which--
- 15:09I mean, the more we learn about Mark,
- 15:12the more believable that does sort of seem.
- 15:14But I don't think it makes sense.
- 15:16Yeah.
- 15:17It's believable, but it doesn't make sense.
- 15:19I don't know.
- 15:20Maybe I'm wrong.
- 15:21The way you said it didn't really sound like it made sense.
- 15:23But--
- 15:24And doesn't it?
- 15:26I'm not sure that I have a strong opinion,
- 15:28one way or the other,
- 15:29and also sometimes I lie when I'm writing my notes.
- 15:32(laughs)
- 15:33Regarding what we should consider the official story,
- 15:35but I am about to have notes.
- 15:39Scott called to Mark.
- 15:41Mark.
- 15:42Did you get the keys as they turned to leave?
- 15:46Obviously, Mark is a pretty common name.
- 15:49That detail is not going to make them readily identifiable,
- 15:54but that was obviously a pretty careless mistake
- 15:57to reveal his partner's real name.
- 16:00Yeah.
- 16:01What?
- 16:02Kind of a bonehead move.
- 16:04At any rate, they tore off into stolen vehicle,
- 16:07which--
- 16:09Okay, everybody in that bank is having like
- 16:11not the coolest day,
- 16:13but one guy is having a really rough fucking day.
- 16:17He was just involved in a bank robbery
- 16:19and then had his car stolen.
- 16:21Damn, dude.
- 16:22What a fucking sad thing.
- 16:23That's sad.
- 16:24I hope he's okay.
- 16:25I know.
- 16:26I'm sure he's okay.
- 16:27These early ones,
- 16:28I feel like,
- 16:30yeah, there's more.
- 16:32Oops.
- 16:33They neared their intended meeting spot
- 16:36only to find that Mark's friend wasn't waiting there.
- 16:39The driver had panicked and gone to their plan B spot.
- 16:43So Mark and Scott went galloping across a golf course to Scott's van.
- 16:49So just dudes that look like they're basically dressed up for Halloween,
- 16:54running across a golf course green.
- 16:57Is it like the middle of the day?
- 16:59I believe so.
- 17:01Yeah.
- 17:02So you assume like people are probably out there golfing?
- 17:05I mean, I also think this was a weekday,
- 17:09so it may not have been like super busy.
- 17:11It was probably in the earlier part of the day.
- 17:15Don't the only people that golf like retired old guys,
- 17:18retired doctors, executives.
- 17:22I assume it was just it was an interesting like,
- 17:25yeah, the imagery is strong.
- 17:27Yeah.
- 17:28There had to be someone out there probably that like kind of spotted them
- 17:32and sort of corroborated the story of them having done this, I feel like,
- 17:37but I don't know.
- 17:39Following the robbery, Mark said,
- 17:41I'm never doing that again.
- 17:43Good.
- 17:45Scott had a slightly different response.
- 17:48Are you sure?
- 17:49Let's go do another one right now.
- 17:52Right now?
- 17:53Well, my dick is still hard.
- 17:56Right?
- 17:57Is this?
- 17:58Mark left town for a while hiding out in Montana
- 18:01for a time.
- 18:02I'd be scared like I do.
- 18:04Well, but I think he was just afraid that, you know,
- 18:08right?
- 18:09And to get like taught.
- 18:10I just robbed a bank.
- 18:12Yeah.
- 18:13Rubbery, number one, netted them $19,971.
- 18:18Oh, that's not too bad.
- 18:20Yeah.
- 18:21I mean, it's a lot more than a typical bank.
- 18:24Rubber walks away with these days.
- 18:26I will say.
- 18:27It's not meth money, but no.
- 18:30Maybe that ain't meth money.
- 18:33It's probably got traces of meth on it,
- 18:36meth or cocaine, likely feces as well.
- 18:42Invigorated and inspired to continue to perfect his methods,
- 18:46Scott was far from calling it quits despite Mark's departure.
- 18:51I mean, he did have other friends, after all.
- 18:56Scott's next co-conspirator was Steve Myers.
- 19:01He was an artist who had sculpted and traveled internationally
- 19:05that was quickly charmed by Scott when presented the idea of teaming up.
- 19:11Just how does that conversation start?
- 19:14I was thinking, how do you go about that?
- 19:18How does one?
- 19:20Yeah.
- 19:21Steve would say that robbing banks was Scott,
- 19:23was by far his more creative endeavor,
- 19:26even when compared to what he'd done in the art world.
- 19:30Okay.
- 19:31I don't see how, but okay.
- 19:33I think I'll explain.
- 19:35It may not make sense to you, but you'll understand his reasoning.
- 19:38Okay.
- 19:39I don't know.
- 19:40I'm all for creativity in life.
- 19:41Yeah.
- 19:43Steve took to monitoring the police scanners and local patrols,
- 19:47logging the times related to their routes to plan their robberies.
- 19:52Steve also brought high quality movie style prosthetics in to the operation,
- 19:59which reminds me of step-rothers because of course it does.
- 20:03Okay.
- 20:04It's okay to not move the quality.
- 20:07It's a very iconic look.
- 20:09There's a lot of really iconic imagery that's associated with this case in general.
- 20:15I mean, fuck the tree house.
- 20:18God.
- 20:19So weird.
- 20:20Yeah.
- 20:21It's, yeah.
- 20:22The first robbery, Steve and Scott did together was the very same branch
- 20:28that Scott and Mark had hit just six weeks prior.
- 20:32I don't know if that's like really dumb or really smart.
- 20:35Yeah.
- 20:36They do a lot of stuff like that where you're like,
- 20:38either that's really dumb or really smart.
- 20:40And I'm going to need to wait until somebody smarter than me comes on the screen as the talking head.
- 20:49It tells me.
- 20:50Yeah.
- 20:51Well, but yeah.
- 20:52I mean, two things can be true.
- 20:56Right.
- 20:57The take for the second robbery was $8,124 and 50 cents.
- 21:05Well, they just robbed all the money.
- 21:08Yeah.
- 21:09No.
- 21:10Like, there wasn't any left.
- 21:13Yeah.
- 21:14And it wasn't much better for the third where they netted 9,613.
- 21:22I don't know that there was as much awareness or systems in place at this point, but having
- 21:32worked as a teller in the art.
- 21:36I will tell you that they specifically structure and have protocols in place.
- 21:42So that each teller only has a certain amount of cash in their drawers.
- 21:47Right.
- 21:48I mean, that makes sense.
- 21:50Yeah.
- 21:51So unless you're going, you know, and hitting like an armored vehicle or, you know, something where you have access to a lot more,
- 22:01or if you go to a branch where it's like teller row and there's like 10, 12 tellers and you're, you know, taking them all.
- 22:09Yeah.
- 22:10Yeah.
- 22:11It's not, it's not crazy to think that you're probably not going to walk away with that much.
- 22:16Yeah.
- 22:17Because like, I feel like you're not going to be breaking into the safe.
- 22:21Like that takes a lot of time.
- 22:23Sure.
- 22:24Or you would need people to get the codes and things.
- 22:28Do they do that later?
- 22:29It's interesting because I specifically didn't mention the vault.
- 22:32But I mean, I assume all the banks have vaults.
- 22:35Yeah.
- 22:36I mean, I think that would be like, pretty much every branch has a vault in some form or fashion, but maybe this is a weird thing to focus on based on the information I've just presented.
- 22:46These guys just robbed two more banks after all.
- 22:49But all I can think about is why and how in the actual fuck did they end up with change?
- 22:578,124 dollars and 50 cents.
- 23:01And 50.
- 23:03I'm like, but did they get like rolls of coins?
- 23:08But like, where does the 50 cents?
- 23:10Because those are all like even numbered right rolls.
- 23:12Yeah.
- 23:13Yeah.
- 23:14No, quarters come in rolls that are a total value of $10 typically.
- 23:18Maybe they drop some.
- 23:20I don't know.
- 23:21I'm just saying typically unless we're talking about an old timey robbery, I don't think anyone slows down to gather up change.
- 23:28Yeah.
- 23:29Maybe it was on the ground.
- 23:31And they were just like, hey, 50 cents.
- 23:33Cool.
- 23:34I really don't think that.
- 23:36It's upsetting to me because I was almost done writing up this case.
- 23:41And I'd watched a documentary and read dozens of articles about this case already before I realized I was like, that says 50 cents.
- 23:5250 cents.
- 23:53And I tend to trust this like source material.
- 24:00I'm sorry.
- 24:01What were they taking money like from the people inside like telling them to empty their pockets or my knowledge.
- 24:08Yeah.
- 24:09Interesting.
- 24:11And honestly, the when you look at the ROI just isn't there.
- 24:16Obviously with coins, it's heavy and doesn't have the same value that like bills would.
- 24:22Yeah.
- 24:23Listen, we can we could stay right here and focus on this for arguably another hour.
- 24:29We won't.
- 24:31You're welcome.
- 24:32I just like to think there was like 50 cents laying on the counter and they've just swiped it.
- 24:36I just feel like like why would you even stop to do that?
- 24:39I don't know.
- 24:40You have to get in and out fat.
- 24:42Like I said, we could be here for an hour.
- 24:45The fact that the initial robberies weren't alarmingly large, allowed Scott and his cohorts to fly under the radar.
- 24:52At least initially, it also motivated them to take things further by targeting the vault.
- 24:59Ooh, that's bony peat.
- 25:04That's when Mustang joined the team.
- 25:07She became a teller at the seafirst bank to get them insider information about the bank protocols,
- 25:14including the deliveries arriving from armored vehicles with cash.
- 25:19Wow.
- 25:21I know.
- 25:22I'm like bad person, but I'm excited.
- 25:24There's a woman involved.
- 25:25I know.
- 25:26Like bad men is that.
- 25:27You know, seriously though.
- 25:30Yeah.
- 25:31Yeah.
- 25:32We don't hear like, we don't hear that a lot.
- 25:33I know.
- 25:34I was kind of like, what?
- 25:36Mustang.
- 25:37Yeah.
- 25:38Don't get emotionally attached to any of these people.
- 25:41Oh, but Mustang.
- 25:43I'm picturing her as Aubrey Plaza for some reason.
- 25:46Oh.
- 25:47Yeah.
- 25:48I would say based on what I know, I sort of pictured across between Donna from that 70s show
- 25:56and Aubrey Plaza.
- 25:58Weird.
- 25:59Kind of a weird, very, yeah, very dry, a dry heat as well.
- 26:08As they continue to perfect their plans, they developed some scripting.
- 26:13So everybody knows when you start to develop a script, that is when it is business.
- 26:19It is real.
- 26:20It is official.
- 26:21There are serious.
- 26:23Yes.
- 26:24Yes.
- 26:25This is real.
- 26:26This is a robbery.
- 26:28This was typically followed up by asking who the vault teller was.
- 26:33Ooh.
- 26:34Yep.
- 26:35Scott seemed to be truly gifted at handling the interactions within the bank.
- 26:40While Steve would be outside monitoring the scanner and radio.
- 26:45It's like a whole operation, dude.
- 26:48Yeah.
- 26:49Their first haul from within the vault, you'll did $252,000.
- 26:56Okay, quite a bit more.
- 26:58Yes.
- 26:59Now bringing their total haul for six robberies to $322,870.
- 27:07And 50 cents, of course.
- 27:1050 cents.
- 27:11Really fucking bugs me.
- 27:13Fitty cent.
- 27:14Why are you going to do this?
- 27:15Fitty.
- 27:16They progressed from teller drawers to armed takeovers.
- 27:22And finally to vault takeovers.
- 27:25Escalation.
- 27:26Yes.
- 27:27And it's finest.
- 27:28It is escalation at something.
- 27:32Something.
- 27:33Yeah.
- 27:34The FBI nicknamed him Hollywood, which was appropriate, not only because of his disguises,
- 27:42reminiscent of movie makeup, actually literally like professional grade movie makeup stuff.
- 27:49That's like, that's cool.
- 27:50Like, not that any of this is cool, but like that piece of it.
- 27:53It's like, oh, I see where the creativity piece of it comes in because that's where his artist friend, you know, really helped him out.
- 28:02Also, because he apparently had been inspired by the character Brody from Point Break.
- 28:09I don't know this.
- 28:10And not, yeah.
- 28:13I know of it, but it's mostly in connection to True Crime.
- 28:17So, okay.
- 28:18He and his nine millimeter would make the most wanted list.
- 28:23So Point Break is, I mean, the long and the short of it, I thought I put more here in my notes about like kind of a brief summary of Point Break.
- 28:31But I think I also have another movie that they compare a different aspect of the case to and I really had to kind of get down to the brass tax and so Point Break is basically like Patrick Swaisy as like a surfer dude slash bank robber.
- 28:49Okay.
- 28:50You've had me a Patrick Swaisy baby.
- 28:52I, yeah, I knew it.
- 28:54I knew it.
- 28:55Yeah.
- 28:56Let's watch it.
- 28:57We should.
- 28:58We should.
- 28:59I'm down.
- 29:01Sean Johnson was the lead special agent of the FBI on Hollywood's case.
- 29:06His counterpoint from the Seattle PD Mike Megan was his exact opposite in nearly every way according to not only those working with the pair, but their own personal assessments.
- 29:20Oh, oh, yeah.
- 29:22So they're just raw deferred.
- 29:24Okay.
- 29:25From each other, as the crimes became more high profile, they came under increasing scrutiny, which forced Scott and his accomplices to think outside the box in order to stay ahead of the authorities.
- 29:40Because all of a sudden they have somebody who's being referred to as the Hollywood band that's making the news.
- 29:46Yeah.
- 29:47You know, it's going to get you recognized pretty fast if you keep doing the same shit.
- 29:51Oh, interesting, interesting.
- 29:55Let you would say that.
- 29:56Oh, sorry.
- 29:57They wrote it.
- 29:58No.
- 29:59Oh, yeah.
- 30:00Okay.
- 30:01So they would intentionally leave a vehicle behind for the cops to find, which seems counterintuitive.
- 30:09Yeah.
- 30:10But they hired someone that looked nothing like, I mean, totally dissimilar to anyone involved in the crimes.
- 30:17To buy a car and hand it off to someone on the robbery team.
- 30:21For that person, it was easy money for doing something that might have seemed odd, but certainly not enough to raise much of a red flag.
- 30:30In an effort to distort forensic evidence and whatever profile the police may have begun to form, they did a number of things to these cheap vehicles.
- 30:41They picked that right.
- 30:43Oh, it's like the day.
- 30:44In the weirdest way possible.
- 30:46They used mineral spirits to clean the vehicles down.
- 30:49And then in polar opposition, because remember, they just cleaned the vehicles.
- 30:55They would plant email hair in other parts of the car, essentially just trying to make it as difficult as possible to figure out what the hell was going on.
- 31:05Is Hollywood a woman who drives a beater, but keeps it meticulously clean, saved for the same things we all leave behind unwittingly, which is our her.
- 31:15I think it's his hair.
- 31:17I don't know.
- 31:18And that.
- 31:19Okay.
- 31:20So I do.
- 31:21And I don't.
- 31:22So they talked about a couple of things where they were like, oh, yeah, they would just get hair from like a random like friend or something.
- 31:30Or.
- 31:31And I'm like, but what if they were able to identify it as being her hair?
- 31:36Like, and you just drew suspicion to her.
- 31:39Listen.
- 31:40And so they could just be able to identify what the DNA stuff that good back then.
- 31:46Yeah.
- 31:47So they could just like tell if it was like a killer female.
- 31:49I don't even know if they can tell if they can tell.
- 31:51For sure that it's male or female.
- 31:52See that it's long.
- 31:53And they're like, it's a girl.
- 31:54It's long.
- 31:55These are girls.
- 31:56I don't know why I said it like that.
- 31:58But or like one of those crazy dogs that are in like all of the sporting shows and they have like the crazy long.
- 32:03Yeah, I forget what those are called.
- 32:05Any who's.
- 32:06I don't know.
- 32:07I don't know how effective this particular strategy was, but they did a number of other things to obfuscate other aspects of evidence in their crimes.
- 32:17Because if that if they stopped there, I'd be like.
- 32:21Weird choice.
- 32:22That's not one of them where I'm like, is that really dumb or really smart?
- 32:25Yeah.
- 32:26That one just seems like.
- 32:27Yeah.
- 32:28Like that seems like somebody who watches too much TV.
- 32:32Trying to think that they're smart.
- 32:34Yeah.
- 32:35And it seems like a really like movie like yeah, like it kind of trophy.
- 32:41Yeah, it can't be.
- 32:42Interesting.
- 32:43When there were multiple routes or routes leading to certain bank branches, they would hire lookouts who would simply radio.
- 32:50Mama's coming.
- 32:51Give the robbery team a heads up.
- 32:55Mama's coming.
- 32:56Mama's coming.
- 32:58Oh my god.
- 32:59That's funny.
- 33:01I don't know why it just really gets me.
- 33:06Mama's got like why it's got my funny mom.
- 33:10This seems like a pretty obvious yet effective broach.
- 33:13Obviously like if you can have somebody tip you off, that's that's good.
- 33:17Right.
- 33:18For crimes.
- 33:20They would repeatedly rob the same banks specifically to throw off the authorities because who would suspect you'd return to the bank.
- 33:30You'd return to the scene of the crime in this case.
- 33:33Yeah.
- 33:34I mean, I like kind of well, and here's the thing.
- 33:38I thought about it from the perspective of how the training kind of is for tellers.
- 33:45So I'm sure the bank employees thought much the same.
- 33:49Like which sort of bolsters statements made by some of them about how traumatized they were.
- 33:56Because you're trained that like it's very unlikely that a bank is going to like repeatedly be hit there.
- 34:04Obviously there are certain geographic demographic areas where yeah, maybe that bank gets hit more than the average, but you don't.
- 34:13This is not the norm.
- 34:15It would just be so like what's that word?
- 34:20Like you were just throw you off because you're like, oh, we were just robbed like, oh, like this is just a normal day a couple days later.
- 34:27Like nothing's going to happen because it just happened.
- 34:30It would just be so like off putting her.
- 34:34Yeah, I know I'm like now I'm trying to think of.
- 34:37There's a word.
- 34:39It well, I mean, it would it would really, I mean off like it would just make you feel off.
- 34:45Like you would.
- 34:46It's almost like being gaslit.
- 34:48Yeah, kind of like that.
- 34:50I can think of the word that I want.
- 34:52Yeah.
- 34:53But like you're thinking like discombobulating.
- 34:55Yeah.
- 34:56But that's like a weird word, but.
- 34:58But I mean, I feel like that kind of fits.
- 35:00Yeah.
- 35:01I mean, shit.
- 35:02We can we can Google some synonyms later.
- 35:05Everyone comment with a synonym for discombobulated.
- 35:08Oh my god.
- 35:09Disorienting.
- 35:10I think that's what I think.
- 35:11Disorienting.
- 35:12Yeah.
- 35:13The team would scan the bills from each take with ultraviolet lights to identify any money that might be marked to further avoid detection.
- 35:22Ooh, okay, that's smart.
- 35:24Smart.
- 35:25Yeah.
- 35:26They also scattered any bills with sequential serial numbers.
- 35:30Something that occurs more frequently with brand new bills as one might encounter at a financial institution, particularly in a bustling city like Seattle.
- 35:41That makes a lot of sense to sure do we're thinking of a lot of things they are.
- 35:46Yeah.
- 35:47They would bury their gear in military canisters on Scott's property until they were ready to carry out the next robbery.
- 35:55Their clothes would then be burned in a nearby burn pit on the property as well.
- 36:01Oh, I don't know.
- 36:02It's not like that's a lot.
- 36:03That's a fair few hoops.
- 36:06Also, like maybe this is just because I'm a girl and am I I typically wear clothes that I like like oh no, I have to burn it.
- 36:14Well, hopefully they're buying clothes they don't really like it and that they would never wear so that's even more like a I know.
- 36:22Now I'm starting to think like them right.
- 36:25Yeah, I was like oh, I guess that makes sense.
- 36:28I'm going to rob this in a fur coat because I never actually wear that.
- 36:32Never wear this.
- 36:34Unfortunately, no, I have to rob the bank because I bought a fur coat.
- 36:39Hey man, you got to spend money to make money.
- 36:44Once that checklist was complete, there was still one final and crucial step left.
- 36:49Anyone with ill gotten gains in the form of large stacks of cash can attest to the importance as well as the difficulty associated with making said unseem somehow legitimate.
- 37:03It's like a full-time job.
- 37:05Yeah, are they hiring?
- 37:07The next step was laundering.
- 37:12So it was off to Vegas.
- 37:15Scott took the games of chance to aid in the money laundering, specifically of the sporting variety.
- 37:23Okay.
- 37:24He plays equal bets on two teams at different casinos.
- 37:29So if it's the Dallas Cowboys versus
- 37:34another sports team, the Packers.
- 37:37I should have written this down.
- 37:41Chiefs, because Taylor Swift.
- 37:43The only one I know.
- 37:45Right.
- 37:46So you place a bet on both teams that are playing the same game.
- 37:50They figured out that this way they'd get back all their money except the five percent the house takes.
- 37:57Small price to pay for liquid funds.
- 38:00Like paying taxes.
- 38:01Like what?
- 38:02Just like that.
- 38:03Yeah, just like that.
- 38:06Yeah, because when you win and you have a ton of money on the winning team, you win really big.
- 38:12Right.
- 38:13And it evens out the loss.
- 38:14That is.
- 38:16I don't know if it still works that way.
- 38:18I don't know if you.
- 38:20I think that the major thing is they've made it really difficult for somebody to basically do this.
- 38:28They made it really difficult for you to basically bet on both sides.
- 38:32Right.
- 38:33I feel like they've they've by now figured out people's.
- 38:36Yeah.
- 38:37Like it would admit it.
- 38:39They probably like take your ID and all that.
- 38:41Yeah.
- 38:42They're like, that's not taxes.
- 38:45Meanwhile, the investigation continued under the watchful eye of the public.
- 38:51David Curley of HiRot TV said it was a stunning sight when Sean Johnson of the FBI took to the local streets with flyers talking to anyone that might know something.
- 39:03He said it was a clear signal that law enforcement was desperate for leads.
- 39:09He said it was a clear signal that they had no clue.
- 39:15I mean, it makes sense because they went to pretty great pains to, you know, to make sure that law enforcement had no clue.
- 39:25I mean, they were doing everything they could to cover their tracks.
- 39:29Around the same time, those clues to Scott said, though, he never really outwardly acknowledged it.
- 39:35He seemed to enjoy the media attention for the mysteries swirling around his many exploits.
- 39:42I mean, if you're working that hard to keep it a mystery, then probably.
- 39:46Yeah.
- 39:48Sean stated he wanted Hollywood to see him.
- 39:51I know he was looking for him, which sounds like a little bit of a public dick measuring contest via the media, but to each the own, I suppose.
- 40:01For a time, reportedly, the authorities considered the idea that Hollywood may have been law enforcement himself.
- 40:10Oh, shit. The plot thickens.
- 40:13Spoiler alert.
- 40:15He is not.
- 40:17Not a spoiler.
- 40:19Very though.
- 40:20Yeah. I think so.
- 40:22I mean, I think it's sort of a testament to some of the things that initially they did well.
- 40:30It feels weird to say.
- 40:32Yeah.
- 40:33But which sort of makes sense as a theory based on the sheer number of robberies with seemingly relatives, they just they they can't pull it them off.
- 40:43Because we've only technically talked about a couple, but there are a few.
- 40:50For a time, still unfazed by the manhunt and investigation, pursuing him, Scott traveled quite a bit and donated significantly to environmental groups.
- 41:01Some had begun to identify the Hollywood bandit as a Robin Hood type folk hero figure.
- 41:08Of course.
- 41:10Though Steve disagrees with the Robin Hood characterization stating that if you look at Robin Hood, it was idealistic.
- 41:19He stole from the rich and gave, you know, all of that nonsense.
- 41:25And Scott wasn't like that.
- 41:28He helped people that he knew if he needed something in the future to be done, he could call on them and they would do it.
- 41:35Oh, so kind of like a little more transactional.
- 41:38Eventually, as their prolific crimes became more widely known, Scott's get up was recognizable enough that a customer called the authorities as he was entering a bank.
- 41:50Oh, spaghetti.
- 41:52Yeah.
- 41:53Steve had to call him out of the bank when he heard the alert as he was monitoring the police scanner.
- 42:00That robbery was called off and they hit a snag with the next robbery as well.
- 42:06As Scott got into his getaway car, a die pack exploded in the cash bag.
- 42:11So yeah.
- 42:13So he was forced to toss it and take off.
- 42:16Oh, yeah.
- 42:17All that work.
- 42:18I know.
- 42:19I know.
- 42:20Yeah, all that work.
- 42:23Despite occasional setbacks and hiccups, the team was always trying to do what the authorities would never expect.
- 42:31So in that regard, I do think it's like they did a lot of things that were sort of counterintuitive and it it it did throw them off.
- 42:42On January 27, 1995 at the C first Madison Park Bank, they did just that.
- 42:50This branch was a challenging target as they need to flee down Madison Street, which would put them headed precisely in the direction of police.
- 42:59Who would no doubt be in hot pursuit of that?
- 43:02Okay.
- 43:03Why would they do that?
- 43:05Good question.
- 43:06Or how?
- 43:08It was that or they'd have to go all the way around the area of lake.
- 43:13Okay.
- 43:14But not a small detour.
- 43:17Okay.
- 43:18Steve suggested a third option.
- 43:21I think this is where that creativity comes in.
- 43:24Go through the lake.
- 43:26Gotta make it to the drive.
- 43:29Yeah.
- 43:30You're a big a police.
- 43:32Oh my god.
- 43:35Yeah.
- 43:36I mean, hey, listen, they already have the zip line thing at the.
- 43:40Mist opportunity.
- 43:41Yeah. Well, not exactly following the robbery.
- 43:44The plan was to get into the van while Steve waited out the heat at a local restaurant.
- 43:50Once police presence had dispersed, he would signal that the coast was clear.
- 43:55So you're just going to hide out in a van.
- 43:58And I'm sure it'll be fine.
- 44:00Yeah.
- 44:01Is it like an unmarked van with no windows?
- 44:04It looks really safe.
- 44:05Actually so much better than that.
- 44:07I mean,
- 44:09it wasn't perfect because I am going to point out something that could have easily gotten them caught.
- 44:14But they retrofitted the van so that someone could get down inside under the floor
- 44:21to avoid detection even if authorities flashlights in through the windows.
- 44:26Wow.
- 44:27Okay.
- 44:28Yes.
- 44:29Yes.
- 44:30However, if anyone had been paying particular attention to that vehicle,
- 44:34they would have seen condensation building up on the windows from the hidden man's breathing.
- 44:41Okay.
- 44:42Luckily for them, no one noticed.
- 44:45Probably because they were out trying to find a bank robber.
- 44:49And they were not paying attention to parked cars.
- 44:53Yeah.
- 44:54Condons.
- 44:55So they just never left the area.
- 44:58Wow.
- 44:59Like hiding in plain sight.
- 45:01Yes, exactly.
- 45:02I mean, it's kind of, I hate to say it.
- 45:05So it's kind of brilliant.
- 45:07Yeah.
- 45:08Is it dumb or is it smart?
- 45:09Yeah.
- 45:10It can be bold.
- 45:11I mean, they didn't think about the condensation.
- 45:14I don't think that's like,
- 45:16I feel like probably most people wouldn't have thought of that.
- 45:19I don't know.
- 45:20I had to get condensation in my car, you know,
- 45:22or you can't, if it leaks and stuff,
- 45:24it doesn't necessarily have to be from someone breathing.
- 45:27I think it would have been significant, like as if you were like, you know,
- 45:31doing the nice thing.
- 45:33Hey, stop breathing under there.
- 45:35Yeah.
- 45:36Oh, man, if they had done an oxygen tank, I wonder if that would have worked.
- 45:40I'm totally just like picturing Leo's hand in Titanic right now.
- 45:44Yeah.
- 45:45Kind of.
- 45:46Yeah.
- 45:47Yeah.
- 45:48I'm glad you sold for a second, because I would have been thinking about that
- 45:52when you were starting to talk.
- 45:53And I don't know if I would have heard you.
- 45:55No, you wouldn't know.
- 45:56No, you wouldn't know.
- 45:57Time has proven that FBI was fearful that he would become violent,
- 46:03especially as he began accessing the vault.
- 46:07Because the stakes are significantly higher.
- 46:09When the vault teller wasn't present at one robbery, he said,
- 46:13"It's Christmas time.
- 46:15I don't want to kill anybody."
- 46:17Before he used a stun gun on one employee.
- 46:20Oh.
- 46:21And honestly, that's the most violent thing that I'm aware of,
- 46:27that happened through the course of any of the robberies.
- 46:31Okay.
- 46:32And that would be really scary, especially in light of specifically what he just said there.
- 46:37Yeah.
- 46:38And somehow we're still a little bit on Christmas.
- 46:41But how do we do that?
- 46:43I mean, it was totally unintentional.
- 46:45And it's just like a quote that came up, nothing else that I can think of really
- 46:49relates to Christmas.
- 46:50But I'm wearing my Christmas present.
- 46:52And it's Christmas.
- 46:54It is Christmas until July.
- 46:56Yeah.
- 46:57The people that were present in these banks were traumatized.
- 47:03Yeah.
- 47:04Susan Dodd stated in the documentary that she was present for a total
- 47:09of 14 bank robberies up to the point that they filmed the documentary in her career.
- 47:15Wow.
- 47:16One of which was the Hollywood bank robber.
- 47:20She said he had a very commanding presence that was very unusual.
- 47:25She wouldn't be the only one to note just how intimidating Hollywood could be.
- 47:30Friends reported that Scott started to get stressed.
- 47:34It changed him and the vibe around the beloved tree house.
- 47:38Steve moved into a front house on the property.
- 47:42And essentially he lived there serving as a sort of gatekeeper.
- 47:49After all, the tree house had drawn admirers on occasion.
- 47:54I can't imagine why.
- 47:56Yeah.
- 47:57I mean, it's pretty like the house itself is a site to behold.
- 48:02And then to be up in the tree house and like the view and to see some of the, you know, the details that are included in it.
- 48:11Yeah.
- 48:12I mean, of course, people are going to be, if they hear about it, they're going to be interested.
- 48:16Yeah.
- 48:17So it doesn't, I mean, that part doesn't surprise me.
- 48:20However, they could no longer risk having too many eyes on the property.
- 48:25Can't have crying eyes.
- 48:27No.
- 48:28Scott's sister, Suzanne, shared a troubling conversation about the state of his mental health at the time.
- 48:35And that he was clearly drinking a lot.
- 48:39She couldn't quite work out what had Scott so on edge of late.
- 48:45And though she was concerned, there was little that she felt could be done.
- 48:51Which I feel like is unfortunately too often the case when somebody doesn't have just like an extremely severe episode.
- 49:01And when you're an adult, there's little that oftentimes your family can do.
- 49:07Even if they are worried about what's going on with you.
- 49:13But they're going to do an intervention.
- 49:16I mean, lead special agent Sean Johnson of the FBI had spent innumerable hours working the case with many others.
- 49:26He had tried to analyze every piece of evidence and data that was available to get ahead of Hollywood.
- 49:32Based on his calculations, he believed that Hollywood was going through $21,000 a month.
- 49:41Wow.
- 49:42Yeah.
- 49:43Okay.
- 49:44He was then able to predict that Hollywood would hit again on one of three days in the new year.
- 49:51Holy shit.
- 49:52Shelton Cooper who?
- 49:55It was the third of the three days that Sean had pinpointed.
- 50:02Meanwhile, the robbery team drew his previous cohort, Mark, would fled to Montana back into this game.
- 50:10On January 25th, 1996, the first interstate wedge wood was to be their test run after taking almost a year off from the bank robberies.
- 50:23And of course, like I said, that also coincided with Mark's return.
- 50:28How they got him to come back?
- 50:31We'll never know.
- 50:33At the time, Sean was about a mile down the road from that very branch.
- 50:39Oh, Hollywood was good, but then so was Sean.
- 50:47While Scott was increasingly erratic in a number of ways, Sean had leaned into analysis that would continue to bring him closer to the infamous bandit.
- 50:59And so, the first time that he was able to predict the end of the year, was the first time that he was able to predict the end of the year.
- 51:09And so, the first time that he was able to predict the end of the year, was the first time that he was able to predict the end of the year.
- 51:17And so, the first time that he was able to predict the end of the year, was the first time that he was able to predict the end of the year.
- 51:26Find my iPhone for money.
- 51:29It's a small GPS tracker that can be inserted in between bills, not exactly anti theft per se, because until someone's left with the cash and toe, there's nothing to track.
- 51:41But post theft also, that doesn't really seem like a thing.
- 51:45So anyways, it's a tracker.
- 51:47That's interesting.
- 51:50Anyway, the devices were making their way to financial institutions to were placed in as many of the bank branches in the Seattle metro area as could be managed.
- 52:01They were pushing them out everywhere.
- 52:05At the time, the robbery team had just watched the movie "Heat" and it "put the fear of God in them."
- 52:15Apparently didn't stop them.
- 52:18No.
- 52:20I don't think I've actually watched it.
- 52:22I've seen short clips from it, so I gave it a goog.
- 52:27Suffice to say, in the commission of the Heist depicted, not everyone has a happy ending.
- 52:33It's a crime thriller that ends in a hail of bullets.
- 52:37The law enforcement was having a startling realization of their own as well.
- 52:44They had come to the conclusion that Hollywood would not go down without a fight.
- 52:51Their assessment was correct, as if they'd known his precise thoughts.
- 52:58Listen, no matter what, let your own hand be the hand of fate, and never let your enemy dictate your fate.
- 53:09Scott said when hiking in the Olympics at the top of Mount Washington.
- 53:14Damn, that's intense.
- 53:16Like, all that whole thing was intense.
- 53:19Hiking the quote.
- 53:20Yeah.
- 53:21Some, perhaps, believing they could see the writing on the wall,
- 53:25began to distance themselves from the robbery ring.
- 53:29And some of them probably weren't even aware
- 53:33that they were a robbery ring?
- 53:36Yeah.
- 53:37Because there were so many, like, little parts that people played.
- 53:41Well, no, what I'm saying is, like, friends of their, like, mutual friends of theirs,
- 53:46some of them probably didn't even know that that's what these guys were doing.
- 53:50A lot of people that were close to them had no idea until after.
- 53:54I see.
- 53:55I was also thinking of, like, the people, like, the thousand dollars to, like, drop off the car.
- 53:59Yeah.
- 54:00Like, people who didn't even know that they were, like, helping.
- 54:02No.
- 54:03Absolutely.
- 54:04Yeah.
- 54:05Yeah.
- 54:06One friend named Albany left for California.
- 54:10And before he did, he tried to convince Steve to do the same, but to no avail.
- 54:17Two weeks before Thanksgiving, the robbery crew became aware of the pronat tags.
- 54:23However, at a bank on 125th Street, they knew there would be $5 to $7 million for the taking.
- 54:32Ooh.
- 54:35They did a test robbery to try to figure out how to handle the tracers.
- 54:39Because, of course, they were consummate professionals.
- 54:43Test robbery.
- 54:44Holy shit, dude.
- 54:46Yeah.
- 54:47For the test, Scott went into a branch, but not in his typical Hollywood get up.
- 54:54Because it was, like, it's a, right.
- 54:56Like, why wouldn't you just totally switch it up?
- 54:59Change it.
- 55:00Something.
- 55:01They found the tags have been put in between stacks of $20 bills.
- 55:06The team was able to identify and discard the two tracers in relatively short order after this test robbery.
- 55:13So they felt pretty confident.
- 55:15I mean, doesn't everyone feel confident after pulling off a risky or complicated task?
- 55:21Yeah.
- 55:22Like, just a singular time, though.
- 55:25I did it one time.
- 55:27I mean, I would feel like, yeah, but maybe do a couple more tests.
- 55:30Right.
- 55:31I don't know.
- 55:32Right.
- 55:33Right.
- 55:34That was kind of my way.
- 55:35Yeah.
- 55:36Like, oh, we did it once.
- 55:37That's probably fine.
- 55:38It's probably fine.
- 55:39Like, they won't switch it up after us robbing it and finding it.
- 55:42And then.
- 55:43Or maybe we'll be handed a set of circumstances that won't be as easy as the first time.
- 55:49Right.
- 55:50Yeah.
- 55:51On the one hand, they were confident they knew how to handle the new pro net tags.
- 55:56But at the same time, Scott's paranoia and anxiety seemed to be reaching a fever pitch.
- 56:02He began to form a plan to hit multiple banks in one last hurrah.
- 56:07Ugh.
- 56:08The plan went like this.
- 56:11The first hit would be a small branch to divert the authorities just before hitting a second.
- 56:17And then a third.
- 56:19I feel like the whole third time's charm thing does not apply to bank robbery.
- 56:25But according to Scott, it was quote, it was not only doable.
- 56:31It was winnable.
- 56:32I feel like you're going to tell us the opposite.
- 56:35But OK.
- 56:36I mean, maybe on November 27, 1996 Thanksgiving Eve, FBI agent Sean was convinced that it would be the day that they would catch Hollywood.
- 56:48Anyone else he'd shared the theory with was simply waiting to see.
- 56:53At the C first bank, Lake City branch, it was less than 20 minutes to closing,
- 56:58but seeing as it was the evening before the holiday weekend,
- 57:02commenced, there was still a number of customers in the bank.
- 57:06As the team entered the branch, probably didn't realize that one of the tellers had recognized them,
- 57:12and immediately activated a silent alarm.
- 57:16The branch manager said that they had been specifically trained for how to handle this robbery team.
- 57:22Ooh, he used the trap money in his drawer and then also set off a second alarm by opening the vault with the duress code.
- 57:32That's so, like, we think the robbers are smart, but like, this is also really smart.
- 57:37They've built in things to the system.
- 57:40Yeah.
- 57:41The call went out over the radio, which as we know, the team was monitoring routinely.
- 57:46When he received this update, Scott directed the branch employee to help load up money as he's holding a gun on him.
- 57:56They had been armed before, and I touched on it very briefly that these were in fact armed takeovers of the banks.
- 58:08That's something that they instituted pretty early on, but there are not at least that I could find as many scenarios where there was like a direct feeling threat like this.
- 58:23So, okay.
- 58:24So it just feels like it's upping the Annie, you know.
- 58:29As they made their way out, the police had not yet arrived, but they weren't far behind.
- 58:36Despite being told to stay down on the floor, one customer had bullied followed after the crew as they had fled.
- 58:43Wow.
- 58:44And was then able to provide a description of the getaway vehicle to authorities.
- 58:50It didn't afford law enforcement much of an advantage as the team quickly ditched it and swapped into another vehicle, a white van.
- 59:00As they fled, the team was disposing of the tracking devices, knowing full well that authorities would be tracking them until they successfully disposed of them all.
- 59:13Even when one was discovered and discarded on the road, law enforcement knew there was a second device still present and active.
- 59:23Because of the second device, eventually law enforcement was able to catch up to them.
- 59:28At which point they executed a felony stop.
- 59:32According to law enforcement, the initial shot was fired, or they assert that he attempted to fire.
- 59:40They identified Scott as the shooter, or would be shooter, who had now moved to the driver's seat at this point.
- 59:47The van quickly came under fire.
- 59:50Mark was hit, as was Steve, in the ensuing gunfire as they took off again.
- 59:57Mark!
- 59:59What?
- 1:00:00I know he came back and this...
- 1:00:04Finally, when the vehicle crashed and Scott took off on foot, he fled to the south without his injured friends.
- 1:00:15I mean, it is kind of an every man for himself, but hopefully you're able to... I mean, not hopefully...
- 1:00:23But you don't even know if you're thinking of the criminal like getting away.
- 1:00:27You're hoping that you get away and hopefully with some of the loot, you know, the Seattle PD officer, Mike Megan,
- 1:00:37who was then present decided to return to the van to attend to the assailants, still present in the van,
- 1:00:43rather than continuing down the alley after the third in what he called the fatal funnel.
- 1:00:50He likes that alliteration, Megan.
- 1:00:53What's his name, Mark?
- 1:00:54Mike Megan, fatal funnel.
- 1:00:56And it might be pronounced "Megan."
- 1:00:59I never heard anybody say his name in spelled "MAGN."
- 1:01:04Mike Megan, fatal PD.
- 1:01:07I mean, it sounds like a cop on the East Coast.
- 1:01:09He sounds like, you know, he's a real Mick, you know?
- 1:01:13Mark Begins was in and out of consciousness following the shootout.
- 1:01:18Meanwhile, Scott remained at large in the area.
- 1:01:21Sean was at Harborview Hospital trying to figure out who the third perpetrator was,
- 1:01:27because they literally still did not know who Hollywood was.
- 1:01:33After two hours of questioning there, it's revealed that Scott Skirtlock is Hollywood,
- 1:01:41which I feel like there's a little bit of an ethical question sometimes about questioning a suspect
- 1:01:50when they've been shot, right?
- 1:01:54And are, you know, in need of medical attention, but I think obviously he's at the hospital
- 1:02:01and he's being traded still feels a little potentially dubious to me,
- 1:02:07but numerous calls were placed by people living in the area trying to provide leads to the authorities.
- 1:02:14Finally, a call came in from someone who believed the third bank robber was in his camper on the back end of his property.
- 1:02:23Officers were dispatched to investigate further.
- 1:02:27They knocked on the camper door, but to no avail.
- 1:02:31They released tear gas and a moment later, they heard a single gunshot.
- 1:02:38Following the single gunshot, they returned fire into the camper allegedly firing 76 rounds into the camper.
- 1:02:47Wow.
- 1:02:50He was a little over the top.
- 1:02:53I mean, I understand because they heard a gunshot.
- 1:02:56They don't know if like they're being fired up, but that just seems like a lot.
- 1:02:59Right. But if you heard a gunshot, nobody is seeing it.
- 1:03:04It's the only gunshot.
- 1:03:07No one is apparently hit to then fire 76 rounds.
- 1:03:13And I get it. We are all humans.
- 1:03:16And there's a certain amount of instinct that no matter what training you have,
- 1:03:22that would be pretty difficult to overcome.
- 1:03:26But I would argue just looking at those facts on paper, it doesn't look the best.
- 1:03:35Because he could they even see him. He was like inside.
- 1:03:38What if someone was in there? What if he had like a hostage or something in there?
- 1:03:43Or just like in a question person.
- 1:03:46Yeah.
- 1:03:47Yeah. That's a good point.
- 1:03:49Suddenly, an otherwise quiet North Seattle neighborhood found itself day loose with various law enforcement, including the SWAT team.
- 1:03:57And the SWAT sister, Suzanne got a call from their aunt Helen, who was absolutely frantic after seeing updates on the news.
- 1:04:06The standoff remained underway for hours up until the point that there had been no response from within the camper for two hours.
- 1:04:16Took them two hours.
- 1:04:18Yeah, after that initial shot and they fired 76 rounds in.
- 1:04:23I feel like two hours, not a standoff at that point.
- 1:04:26No, it sure. I mean, they might have thought it was, but it sure wasn't.
- 1:04:30It quickly became clear that the shot that officers had heard on the scene was from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
- 1:04:39Scott Skirlack was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at 41 years old.
- 1:04:46From the documentary, Mike Megan Seattle PD said, reciting the lines misattributed to Mark Twain, rather than the infamous lawyer Clarence Dero, who actually said it, that he would.
- 1:05:05I've never wished death upon a man, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure, which is I get it.
- 1:05:15I get it.
- 1:05:16Get it.
- 1:05:17Same. Same girl. Same.
- 1:05:19But it really annoyed me when I went to look this up.
- 1:05:22And I was like, wait, is that a Mark Twain quote?
- 1:05:25And I don't know why that jumped out at me.
- 1:05:27But I was like, I feel like this is one of the ones that I've heard is frequently misquoted.
- 1:05:33And sure as shit, I look it up.
- 1:05:35And there were a ton of articles.
- 1:05:40And talking about how it is, they're like, we don't know how this started happening, but it did.
- 1:05:47And now it won't stop.
- 1:05:49Interesting.
- 1:05:51That is so like, I don't know.
- 1:05:55I also don't know that this person deserved that.
- 1:05:58Like he wasn't killing a bunch of people, you know?
- 1:06:01He was laughing banks very well.
- 1:06:05And I don't know that in our particular format and keeping sort of brevity in mind that we have sort of the right platform or resources to really illuminate the what I feel is the depth of some probably undiagnosed
- 1:06:32mental health issues that Scott and probably other people involved in this were experiencing at the time.
- 1:06:44And I think that's not to say that that is an excuse.
- 1:06:52You know, that doesn't make it okay.
- 1:06:56But at the same time, whether whether that was an element of it or not, I I struggle with thinking this person deserves to die.
- 1:07:08Yeah.
- 1:07:09And in that way.
- 1:07:11And he didn't just say that he said he got pleasure from reading the obituary.
- 1:07:15Right.
- 1:07:16Yeah.
- 1:07:17I mean, it was quite but I do think that is where it kind of got it.
- 1:07:21It's like I'm not gonna get it.
- 1:07:27Yeah, it does feel a little bit.
- 1:07:29And that is so totally something that I would put on a fucking coffee mug that I would drink out of every single day.
- 1:07:36And I didn't like it that much in this context.
- 1:07:41Yeah.
- 1:07:42And I think that was Sean stated his biggest regret was that he was never able to sit down with Scott based a face.
- 1:07:53He said, if I had been in the vehicle that night in front of that pursuit line, would I have done what Mike did shooting to the back of the van?
- 1:08:03No.
- 1:08:04There's always another day to catch him.
- 1:08:08Seriously, there's always another day.
- 1:08:11Wow.
- 1:08:12And that's coming from an FBI agent.
- 1:08:16Yes.
- 1:08:17Who predicted within a set, like three day period when he was going to be striking again and was accurate.
- 1:08:26Yeah.
- 1:08:27The other piece of it is, you have to keep in mind this was a residential neighborhood.
- 1:08:32Holy shit.
- 1:08:33This is a residential neighborhood where they shot into the back of the van as they were trying to execute this felony stop.
- 1:08:40So then as he is fleeing, he's fleeing into people's backyards.
- 1:08:47Shit.
- 1:08:48And this is a man that has said he's not going to be taken alive in so many words.
- 1:08:56So they all knew that.
- 1:08:58Like that was something that the cops knew or I don't know that I mean that was not something that he had said to them.
- 1:09:05Well, you know, but I think they were getting a pretty clear indication.
- 1:09:12And they were concerned that he would become violent.
- 1:09:16And I think knowing what they did know about him, backing him into a corner where they were perhaps not the best prepared.
- 1:09:26I hate to say ill prepared, but there were a lot of variables still that they couldn't control.
- 1:09:33So you back an injured animal into a corner and there are only so many potential outcomes.
- 1:09:42This is the part that makes me like actually want to cry because I can picture his father, a former pastor.
- 1:09:53They show him walking around Scott's property and the tree house and Suzanne talks about their experience as the family.
- 1:10:06Suzanne described their family's heartbreak, a sentiment echoed by Scott's childhood friend Steve Harper.
- 1:10:15It's really hard to see in this case where there's such a dramatic impact on this person's family and like the loss of the shock.
- 1:10:29All of that that they experienced because as much as you know he was described as being kind of a troublemaker and obviously he had been in trouble.
- 1:10:42You know, his sister described him as an adrenaline junkie. I just don't think they in a million years.
- 1:10:49I don't think they saw any piece of this coming.
- 1:10:55Mustang visited Steve several times while he was in prison until one day he received a letter from her sister saying that she had died by suicide.
- 1:11:07Oh wow. My understanding is that there were some things that were shared just I mean this is third party sort of statements that you know it really messed her up.
- 1:11:22Really messed her up to see what had happened to these guys and to see like all of the damage that this caused in so many lives.
- 1:11:33I mean the people that were present for the robberies, people who perpetrated them their families, this it's got tentacles.
- 1:11:45Yeah. And she wasn't even involved at the end there right or was she.
- 1:11:50I mean she had been working with them for some time. I think she I don't know at what point you know her being able to tip them off to things ended.
- 1:12:00I guess you might not know if she wasn't like caught.
- 1:12:03My understanding is that I mean she was an informant to them damn near until the end.
- 1:12:10Wow.
- 1:12:11Because I think that's how they learned of the pro net tax.
- 1:12:14Oh, that would make sense.
- 1:12:16Oh man.
- 1:12:18As shocked as his family was to learn of his crimes as they grieved his passing.
- 1:12:23Many felt it was a sad though not entirely unexpected ending.
- 1:12:29Mark Biggins said that in discussions about what they do if they were to get caught Scott said I'm not going to prison.
- 1:12:40I'm going to head for the white light.
- 1:12:43Mark did however express regret about the trauma that was experienced by those present for the bang robberies.
- 1:12:51Steve Myers and Mark Biggins each faced state and federal charges.
- 1:12:56In 1997 both Steve Myers and Mark Biggins were sentenced to 21 years and three months in prison.
- 1:13:05No other accomplices were charged.
- 1:13:08Myers was released in 2013 and Biggins in 2015.
- 1:13:14Within a year of Scott's death the treehouse had crumbled and tumbled down from the trees.
- 1:13:21Oh, how?
- 1:13:24I was just falling to disrepair.
- 1:13:27Is my understanding that's only like a couple of years you said within a year within a year of Scott's death.
- 1:13:33It's like what I'm wanting to focus on this because it's less sad.
- 1:13:38I think.
- 1:13:39But I'm just like were they just constantly repairing it or what would it have fallen apart with them like living in it?
- 1:13:44I'm just wondering about that.
- 1:13:46It's a valid question. I do think it was probably just you know the inattention to it when Mark was released.
- 1:13:55He returned to the property where he scattered some of Scott's ashes.
- 1:14:01A lawsuit was filed against Scott's estate by a group of law enforcement officers in 1997 for damages that occurred related to his crimes and capture within the next couple of years.
- 1:14:14The family had sold the tree house property to pay off Scott's outstanding debts.
- 1:14:19Restitution to the FBI as well as those related to the lawsuit.
- 1:14:24I don't know how to feel about that.
- 1:14:27Yeah, it's I want to say it's a tough one, but I don't think it is.
- 1:14:33Actually, I think that if it's going to be really difficult for the public to go after law enforcement in any official legal capacity, they shouldn't be able to go after people's private estates.
- 1:14:48Right.
- 1:14:49I don't doubt that they deserve to receive recompens, but I don't know that it should come at.
- 1:14:57I don't want to say expense because I'm sure they intended to sell that property.
- 1:15:03I doubt that any of his family could have dared to be there on the property, but I don't think that it should have to come to that.
- 1:15:14Yeah, because his living descendants did nothing wrong.
- 1:15:20I kind of think that's a little bit of a fucked loophole in our system because sure is shit.
- 1:15:28If you want to try to sue a cop for anything, like the wrongful execution of a loved one or anything else, it ain't easy.
- 1:15:41It's a protection that is written into their role.
- 1:15:47And in some degree, maybe that's a necessity, but this feels, this doesn't, this feels icky.
- 1:15:57This doesn't feel very right.
- 1:15:58It feels icky again.
- 1:15:59Yeah.
- 1:16:00And I think unfortunately, some of this is just going to feel icky because icky things happened and there's no way for a situation like this to be resolved without there being hurt.
- 1:16:16Being hurt feelings and just, you know, the general ick, if you will, but I struggle.
- 1:16:25I struggle with that in particular.
- 1:16:28Yeah.
- 1:16:29That doesn't feel right.
- 1:16:31Between 1992 and 1996, the Hollywood Bandit and his associates robbed 19 confirmed banks stealing over.
- 1:16:44Are you ready for this?
- 1:16:45I am ready.
- 1:16:46$2.3 million in 50 cents.
- 1:16:51My next live literally says, but let's not forget about the change.
- 1:16:56I grew up in.
- 1:16:57No, I was like, okay, that'll be something that most everybody's going to have forgotten.
- 1:17:03I almost didn't put that in because I was like, people are going to like not remember that I never forget.
- 1:17:09I don't know.
- 1:17:15It's tough because I don't think anybody wants to sympathize too much with the bad guys, but I think there are some things like his family.
- 1:17:26They're not the bad guys.
- 1:17:28I mean, if this was like, you know, generational family conspiracy, maybe I would feel a little bit different, like, situationally, but that is not this.
- 1:17:41Yeah.
- 1:17:42And he was, I mean, obviously, if you're saying, if you're living your life in a way where your out is dying by suicide.
- 1:17:52Head for the white light.
- 1:17:53Like that, that's just obviously there's some sort of mental crisis going on in there.
- 1:17:59That's how you're living your life and that's like your plan.
- 1:18:02Yeah.
- 1:18:03So they actually read a number of excerpts from his, I would say they seem to be pretty extensive, pretty detailed journals.
- 1:18:14And there were enough people that knew him at the time that shared whether it's things that he said or things that he did that I feel like inform regarding his mental state at that point in time.
- 1:18:32And I do think it would be hard to argue that there's not something there.
- 1:18:38It's a tough thing because for me, I sort of want to walk the line of addressing that, but, you know, also steering clear because, you know, I'm not qualified to diagnose that.
- 1:18:52And I have my own, you know, suspicions and, you know, things that I kind of have taken away from the case and what I believe, but I don't want to put things out there that I don't feel like I can state with confidence and backup with.
- 1:19:07Right, you know, facts, but yeah, that that's the long and the short of it for me is that even if you know nothing about the case, if you read some of those journal entries or you heard some of the statements that he made to other people at the time, just with no context.
- 1:19:28I think probably you would think, yeah, this is this there's a mental health issue here. There's an undiagnosed disorder or disease.
- 1:19:39And I think even in the 90s, things had come, you know, a long way, perhaps, but I'm not sure that the resources that he might have needed would have been available.
- 1:19:54I can't imagine. Yeah, not like they are today anyway. For sure. Yeah. And they still suck. Yeah, and they're still not great.
- 1:20:03They're still shit to be honest, but, you know, keep working on it. I'm really curious about what we're going to what we're going to get here with the tarot.
- 1:20:15Yeah, me too. Yeah. Should we head to it?
- 1:20:19I think so. Oh! What? I'm going to put that one aside. Did you pull a card already? No, I pulled up the deck. And it was the one on the bottom. And when I went to grab all of them, I just scoop them. And that one.
- 1:20:43I was like, Oh, and this one. Oh, so almost they've been interesting. Yeah. Okay.
- 1:20:50I'm sure I'm like right from the middle. I like it. And it looks like he's working out. What's the cat? Temperance. Oh, temperance. Okay.
- 1:21:00It's a turtle. I like turtles. It's 14. Wait a second. Hold on.
- 1:21:09What? Dude. Okay. Hold on. Okay. You guys. I'll be right back. I swear to God. I did not make this connection because I stopped thinking about the number.
- 1:21:25Okay. I'll be right back. Okay. Okay. Should we go back? I'm excited. I love when the shit happens. Is there a number on that?
- 1:21:3219. Oh, 19. For 19 bank robberies. Oh, okay. I thought, okay. Wow. Interesting. For some reason, whenever I've thought about the number of robberies, like, unless I'm like actually referring to my notes and looking at them, I've been thinking it was 14 robberies.
- 1:21:56And then I was like, I have to look because I just read this in the notes. I think it's a 19 because it was so many. And they actually go through in the documentary that I watched, like quite a few of them, like in a good bit of detail for that, you know, format at least.
- 1:22:19And police it. It's 19. That is. That is crazy. And the card number is the number that I can't thinking that it was. Yeah. That's funny too. How we, I mean, we show off pretty frequently what we're drinking, but like not always to the extent we showed it off like two times. Yeah.
- 1:22:40And it's like made sure that we were showing it. So that's that's fun. Did I say that I drew this in the reverse? No, did you? I don't think so. I you showed it to me upright. I mean, you can always do that thing where we don't sometimes we just don't remember and then we it like fits both ways, you know.
- 1:23:01And then I think that's one thing before I forget the turtles on a log and you put a log on the. That's so true. And it's like green turtles green and you're like money and like make the lights green.
- 1:23:15Okay. So I'm skimming through both interpretations because I got so excited about the 19 crimes that was exciting. Yes.
- 1:23:26And like, did I pull this in the reverse? Did I say reverse or did I pull it in the upright? I literally cannot remember. And as I'm skimming through the interpretation.
- 1:23:38Just real quick, like scanning the bullet points. I'm like, I can make an argument for either I think we might have to just read them both and review the tape.
- 1:23:51I can't agree. Them both, man. Oh my gosh. Okay. I feel like sometimes if my brain doesn't know or if it's feeling flip floppy, even when I even when I grab it, sometimes I'm like, do I do it? Which way? Yeah.
- 1:24:03I feel like then it's kind of like, there's nothing wrong with that. We can do whatever the fuck we want.
- 1:24:09True. We can. Okay. Keywords are moderation, harmony, acceptance, resolution, cooperation and patience.
- 1:24:22This lovely card often features a winged angel male, female or and drudgeness.
- 1:24:29In the writer wait Smith, the angel stands in a stream bordered by flowers. Obviously we have a tweedle.
- 1:24:37In some decks, the figure pours liquid, the elixir of life from a golden vessel into a silver one in a continuous stream, suggesting the interplay of the material and spiritual world.
- 1:24:54Oh, it's blowing my mind. You was such like a spiritual person, but also so much of like his pursuits were focused on material well.
- 1:25:07Yeah. The word vessel relates to the great mother goddesses of antiquity. And the human body is often referred to as the vessel of the soul.
- 1:25:20Thus both the angelic figure and the cups are symbolic references to the feminine force.
- 1:25:28Upright temperance indicates a time of inner growth and outer harmony.
- 1:25:33You're learning to temper your ego needs with the needs of the spirit within.
- 1:25:39With patience, you can blend disparate elements of yourself and or your world into a harmonious whole.
- 1:25:47In a reading about money, moderation is the key.
- 1:25:52Yeah, you said moderation is one of the keywords and I was like, yeah.
- 1:25:57Don't expect immediate gains or huge profits at this time.
- 1:26:02This card may indicate a period when your finances are balanced or it may recommend getting money matters in order.
- 1:26:11Yeah. If the reading is about your job, temperance represents a time of cooperation and relative peace in your workplace.
- 1:26:22It can also recommend distributing responsibilities and rewards among co-workers in an equitable way.
- 1:26:30Sometimes this card tells you to balance work and play.
- 1:26:34It does seem like they were kind of like a they were like a tea and working together, you know.
- 1:26:39In a reading about love, temperance urges you to heal rifts, avoid ego struggles and seek peace in a relationship.
- 1:26:47It can also advise you to let a relationship develop at its own pace. Don't try to rush things.
- 1:26:54When temperance is reversed, a situation may be stalled or out of balance.
- 1:27:00All you can do is let batters work themselves out which they will in time.
- 1:27:05Be patient. Trying to force inharmonious factors together will only cause bad feelings and poor results, like mixing oil and water.
- 1:27:15Extreme actions or reactions will likely backfire now.
- 1:27:20In a reading about money, intemperate spending may have plunged you into debt.
- 1:27:26Conversely, insecurity or lack of self-worth may lead you to hoard money instead of enjoying it or finding ways to make it work for you.
- 1:27:34They enjoyed it, right? Or at least one of them did.
- 1:27:38Yeah, but I just feel like they're like the money, the financial habits were very erratic.
- 1:27:45If the reading is about work, you may have trouble handling the responsibilities of your job or balancing your professional and personal life.
- 1:27:54You like that was getting there?
- 1:27:56Could be.
- 1:27:58Perhaps you're not using your time efficiently. Temperance reversed can also indicate lack of cooperation or discord in your workplace.
- 1:28:08In a reading about love, extreme emotions may provoke arguments or a standoff between you and a partner.
- 1:28:15Egos get in the way of harmony and happiness. Temperance reversed can mean trying to rush a relationship which causes tension and frustration.
- 1:28:26There's an extra excerpt. Patience in all things.
- 1:28:31The word temperance derives from the Latin tempera which means to moderate, blend or mix together harmoniously.
- 1:28:41Interestingly, the card was named Time in Early Decks which provides a key to its underlying meaning.
- 1:28:50Temperance encourages patience, things happen at their own pace in their own time.
- 1:28:57This is weird.
- 1:28:58This is one of the great lessons of the Zen Masters.
- 1:29:02There are times when nothing can be done and nothing needs to be done.
- 1:29:07Or there's always time to catch them another day.
- 1:29:11It's crazy.
- 1:29:13Yeah, it's totally thinking of...
- 1:29:15Sean? Sean? He's like, "Yeah, be patient. We can catch him again."
- 1:29:23I'm sure there are so many elements of the investigation, the case, all of the people involved that we just can't ever fully know.
- 1:29:37But I walked away feeling like, "Wow."
- 1:29:43Thinking about how different factors of law enforcement handled this.
- 1:29:51It's different when you're in the moment and you're there in person.
- 1:29:58Sometimes you've done the legwork but maybe in the moment, whether it's traffic or something else
- 1:30:06that prevents you from being right there in the hot seat.
- 1:30:11It's hard to know how you're going to react but I did walk away feeling like Sean's approach and some of the tactics that he used
- 1:30:22and some of the things that he profess felt like higher level.
- 1:30:27I'm seeing what you're putting down.
- 1:30:30I don't know how else to put it and I'm really struggling to not put it in a crossway.
- 1:30:39But the situation may be a little bit different, just depending on who was handling it.
- 1:30:48We're only ever going to know this scenario where it was handled the way it was.
- 1:30:55But just too bad because I do think there are things that we can learn from sitting down with someone who has been this wildly successful.
- 1:31:11And truly, you can see the progression from just walking up and doing these at the teller stand robberies and then eventually progressing to armed robberies and how they controlled the crowds.
- 1:31:30The vault.
- 1:31:32Getting the trackers.
- 1:31:35And I was thinking to this whole time, their whole team had all the patience.
- 1:31:40The patience was the word of the day.
- 1:31:42They did make up and test runs and listen to scanners and hired people to buy cars.
- 1:31:51That takes a lot of patience and planning.
- 1:31:55And I think it's sort of like they have the patience and sort of whether it's the ability or you know they lucked out.
- 1:32:06However you want to put that for them to be successful at a certain level.
- 1:32:11And I think when you look at sort of how it was handled by different bodies of law enforcement, I look at Sean and sort of how he approached it as being like that's someone that is rising.
- 1:32:24To meet that person where they're at to try to get ahead of it.
- 1:32:29Yeah.
- 1:32:30Yeah, I do think it's unfortunate that they weren't able to sit down with Scott for a lot of reasons.
- 1:32:37Yeah.
- 1:32:38But I think there's always something that we can kind of learn from from those interactions in hindsight.
- 1:32:46I think so too.
- 1:32:47Yeah.
- 1:32:48You're right.
- 1:32:49You're right.
- 1:32:51Also, we've said patience like 87 times so many times.
- 1:32:55And we have a list of shout outs, but patience.
- 1:32:59I'm thinking about you.
- 1:33:01Speaking of patience, should I read?
- 1:33:03Yeah, little interpretation.
- 1:33:05Give it to me, baby.
- 1:33:07This didn't even like cross my mind, but I guess it's why they put the turtle in the card because it says slow and steady progress.
- 1:33:15There is wisdom in staying in my shell, not turtle.
- 1:33:19I am safe from the raccoons crying pause and the hawk will think me a rock.
- 1:33:25But soon she was hungry, the sun moved and she was cold.
- 1:33:30She grew lonely.
- 1:33:32So she emerged.
- 1:33:33She filled up on Mayflies and cool water.
- 1:33:36She found other turtles.
- 1:33:38She basked.
- 1:33:40There is wisdom in being open to the world, thought turtle.
- 1:33:44A shadow of black feathers blocked the sun in the instant before the crow's beak struck in that moment of warning.
- 1:33:52Turtle recanted her newfound philosophy.
- 1:33:56She retracted into her shell and the beak glanced off her care pace.
- 1:34:01Ah, realized turtle slightly rattled.
- 1:34:04It is best to be sometimes in my shell and sometimes out.
- 1:34:09There is wisdom in that.
- 1:34:11Oh my gosh.
- 1:34:12Okay.
- 1:34:13That's crazy.
- 1:34:14Yeah.
- 1:34:15Okay.
- 1:34:16So I don't know.
- 1:34:18There are so many aspects of this.
- 1:34:20Like if you build a tree house in an isolated part of the woods, I feel like it's so emblematic of like so much of his personality and experience.
- 1:34:37Yeah.
- 1:34:38Like hiding in this turtle shell.
- 1:34:39A little bit.
- 1:34:43Yeah.
- 1:34:44And especially once he really started to, you know, as they kind of advanced in this whole scheme and he really started to become a little bit paranoid and like they withdrew and they closed off the property more.
- 1:34:56Oh, didn't they like stop for a year, you said?
- 1:34:59They did.
- 1:35:00Yeah, they did at one point.
- 1:35:01Yeah.
- 1:35:02And then they just like, I don't know if they were ever like almost, yeah, they were like almost caught.
- 1:35:19Oh, yeah.
- 1:35:20I mean, there were definitely some close calls for sure.
- 1:35:23Like the first.
- 1:35:24And then until, you know, the last definitely makes me think of that final.
- 1:35:32Yeah.
- 1:35:33Wow.
- 1:35:34Like they should have just stayed in their shell.
- 1:35:36Yeah.
- 1:35:37Stay hidden while the hiding is good.
- 1:35:40Okay.
- 1:35:41I want to know what the other card is.
- 1:35:42Um, it's the strength card.
- 1:35:45Oh.
- 1:35:46And it's a fish.
- 1:35:48I think it's a sock.
- 1:35:51I say I'm in.
- 1:35:52I mean, I think I'm in a sock.
- 1:35:54I'm in a sock.
- 1:35:55Okay.
- 1:35:56Okay.
- 1:35:57It's interesting.
- 1:35:58We got two major arcana cards.
- 1:35:59Yeah.
- 1:36:00It's my card.
- 1:36:01Wow.
- 1:36:02I mean, I feel like just strength off the bat.
- 1:36:04Like that.
- 1:36:05Just.
- 1:36:06It fits as well.
- 1:36:07Okay.
- 1:36:08So just write off the bat from the extra excerpt.
- 1:36:11This.
- 1:36:12I feel like it relates to something that I talked about really briefly.
- 1:36:16Because I didn't want to overplay it.
- 1:36:19Because I don't want people.
- 1:36:20I don't want people to get it.
- 1:36:22But I want people to be aware of what I'm going to do.
- 1:36:24I want people to know what I'm going to do.
- 1:36:26And I want people to know what I'm going to do.
- 1:36:27And I want people to know what I'm going to do.
- 1:36:29I want people to know what I'm going to do.
- 1:36:30I want people to know what I'm going to do.
- 1:36:31I want people to know what I'm going to do.
- 1:36:32I want people to know what I'm going to do.
- 1:36:33I want people to know what I'm going to do.
- 1:36:34I want people to know what I'm going to do.
- 1:36:35I want people to know what I'm going to do.
