Now she wants to know how a protection trip, the most time-critical message in the plant, can be trusted to an Ethernet switch. Over two days in the new 132/33 kV substation at the Al Sahil Gas Complex, with a protection engineer from the relay vendor, Tomasz Wierzbicki, they follow a fault from current transformer to circuit breaker coil, counting milliseconds and packets, and find out why there are two completely separate networks on the floor, painted different colours.
