- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And he began to say to them,
- 0:05Speaker 1: This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. Luke
- 0:10Speaker 1: 4.21 Dear Lord, thank you that as you build my life,
- 0:16Speaker 1: I will not be driven by reputation, but will be
- 0:19Speaker 1: driven by purpose. I thank you that as my life
- 0:24Speaker 1: begins to take form, and the ministry that you called
- 0:28Speaker 1: me to live takes shape I praise you that I
- 0:33Speaker 1: will be able to preach with authority. I'll be able
- 0:36Speaker 1: to heal the brokenhearted with compassion. And I'll be able
- 0:41Speaker 1: to cast out evil mindsets and spirits with power and authority.
- 0:48Speaker 1: If you did it, Jesus, I know that I can
- 0:51Speaker 1: do it. Because the same power that flowed through you
- 0:55Speaker 1: is flowing through me. I will only do what I
- 0:59Speaker 1: see you doing. I will only speak what you tell
- 1:04Speaker 1: me to speak. I declare that your Spirit is upon me.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I declare that your authority is on me. Therefore, I
- 1:16Speaker 1: will stand in the power of your Holy Spirit and
- 1:20Speaker 1: remember who you've called me to be, even when others
- 1:25Speaker 1: don't believe it. I know who I am in the
- 1:28Speaker 1: Lord and nothing will change that. I am called and
- 1:35Speaker 1: I am chosen. In Jesus' name. Amen. Thank you for
- 1:44Speaker 1: making prayer a priority in your day. To learn more
- 1:48Speaker 1: about the Bible, stay tuned for today's story. Brought to

- 2:02Speaker 2: POSSESSION AND REJECTION In our last story, Jesus revealed himself
- 2:08Speaker 2: to be the Messiah towards an outcast. She had spent
- 2:11Speaker 2: most of her life ridiculed and rejected, but in Jesus
- 2:15Speaker 2: she found hope. This woman was the adulteress from Samaria.
- 2:19Speaker 2: When she discovered Jesus was the Messiah, she ran to
- 2:22Speaker 2: go and tell everyone she knew. Now we see the
- 2:25Speaker 2: beginnings of Jesus' ministry. He heals a man's son with
- 2:29Speaker 2: just a word. He releases a man from demon possession
- 2:33Speaker 2: with a command. And he ignites a crowd of friends
- 2:36Speaker 2: against him with his preaching. Jesus' words are beginning to heal,
- 2:40Speaker 2: set free, and divide. It is the beginning of a
- 2:44Speaker 2: revival inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Hello, this is Pastor Jack Graham with another episode of
- 2:53Speaker 3: the Bible in a Year podcast. In our last time together,
- 2:57Speaker 3: in our story of Jesus, we learned how Jesus showed
- 3:00Speaker 3: himself as Messiah to a Samaritan woman, a very lost woman.
- 3:05Speaker 3: But his words made faith come alive in her heart
- 3:08Speaker 3: and changed her forever. She received living water. And as
- 3:13Speaker 3: a result, she brought many others to meet Jesus, and
- 3:16Speaker 3: they also believed in him. Today, we'll hear as Jesus
- 3:20Speaker 3: begins to travel about healing different people in different ways.
- 3:24Speaker 3: from healing physical maladies to casting out demons. Jesus is
- 3:28Speaker 3: showing the world that he has the power of God
- 3:30Speaker 3: because he is God. His deeds and his words bring
- 3:33Speaker 3: many to himself. Yet for others, the wonders and the
- 3:37Speaker 3: words of Jesus incite anger, hatred, and rejection. Far from
- 3:43Speaker 3: being universally accepted, Jesus will be opposed by many. So,
- 3:48Speaker 3: let's listen now to today's word.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Word of Jesus' presence spread like wildfire. Stories of his
- 3:56Speaker 2: teaching had brought many to his side. Rumors of his
- 3:59Speaker 2: whips in the temples created speculation and intrigue. Yet Jesus
- 4:03Speaker 2: was not a man driven by reputation. He had a purpose,
- 4:07Speaker 2: to fulfill the will of the Father. Each act was deliberate.
- 4:11Speaker 2: He did nothing on a whim or out of laziness.
- 4:14Speaker 2: People began to notice that Jesus walked with a different
- 4:17Speaker 2: type of authority than just some other teacher. they were
- 4:20Speaker 2: beginning to believe the words proclaimed by John the Baptist.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Perhaps this was the Messiah. Jesus was walking the streets
- 4:28Speaker 2: of Cana in Galilee, where he had turned water into wine.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Jesus navigated the marketplace with his followers, looking for food
- 4:35Speaker 2: to cook for dinner. As Jesus was enjoying the marketplace,
- 4:39Speaker 2: he heard a desperate voice cry out from a distance, Jesus,
- 4:42Speaker 2: please help me! Jesus looked and saw an official from
- 4:46Speaker 2: Capernaum running towards him. He was clearly a wealthy man,
- 4:49Speaker 2: judging by his robes. However, he did not walk or
- 4:52Speaker 2: speak like a man of power. Instead, he desperately ran
- 4:55Speaker 2: towards Jesus and fell at his feet. Panting, the man
- 4:58Speaker 2: gasped for words. Jesus, my son is sick. Towards the
- 5:03Speaker 2: point of death, I am out of options. Are you
- 5:06Speaker 2: able to heal him? Jesus looked at the man and
- 5:09Speaker 2: noticed that many people were observing them. They were waiting
- 5:12Speaker 2: for some sort of miraculous sign or spectacle. Jesus would
- 5:16Speaker 2: not give it to them. He touched the man's shoulder
- 5:19Speaker 2: and helped him to his feet.' Go, your son will live,'
- 5:23Speaker 2: Jesus said with a smile. The man wiped away some
- 5:26Speaker 2: of his tears. Although he had no physical proof yet
- 5:29Speaker 2: that what Jesus said was true, he believed him and
- 5:32Speaker 2: left to be with his son. As he was on
- 5:35Speaker 2: his way, his servants found him and brought a report
- 5:37Speaker 2: that his son had been healed. So he and his
- 5:40Speaker 2: entire household believed in Jesus. Jesus dwelled in Galilee for
- 5:44Speaker 2: a while. There he would meet with people that were
- 5:47Speaker 2: ill and preach in the synagogues. When the Sabbath had come,
- 5:50Speaker 2: Jesus was preaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. Hundreds of
- 5:54Speaker 2: people piled into the room to hear from Jesus. All
- 5:57Speaker 2: were silent as he spoke. His words flowed with the
- 6:00Speaker 2: strength and grace of the Jordan River. People marveled at
- 6:04Speaker 2: his teaching. Many teachers of the day relied on eloquent
- 6:07Speaker 2: speech or jarring rhetoric, but not Jesus. His words possessed authority.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Every sentence presented new and fresh truths, yet not all
- 6:16Speaker 2: in attendance were enjoying his servant. There was a man
- 6:20Speaker 2: in the back of the room shaking where he stood.
- 6:22Speaker 2: His eyes glared at Jesus, and he rammed his fist
- 6:25Speaker 2: against the wall. As Jesus was speaking, a deep laughter
- 6:29Speaker 2: echoed from the back of the synagogue. Everyone's heads turned
- 6:33Speaker 2: as the man walked towards the front. His eyes were
- 6:35Speaker 2: bloodshot and his entire body twitched and shook as he marched.
- 6:39Speaker 2: His laugh was disturbing and sent chills down the spines
- 6:42Speaker 2: of the disciples. Ha! he yelled as he pointed towards Jesus.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Why have you come to us, Jesus of Nazareth? the
- 6:50Speaker 2: man spat. His neck flexed backwards and his face turned red.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Jesus knew who this man was. Rather, he knew who
- 6:58Speaker 2: possessed him. Have you come to destroy us? I know
- 7:01Speaker 2: who you are. You are the Holy One, the Son
- 7:04Speaker 2: of God. You are... Be silent, Jesus rebuked. He stepped
- 7:10Speaker 2: down from the front of the stage and made his
- 7:12Speaker 2: way towards the demon-possessed man. The man writhed as he
- 7:16Speaker 2: saw Jesus approaching, still seeping with disturbing laughter. The man
- 7:21Speaker 2: fell on his back and Jesus knelt down and touched
- 7:24Speaker 2: his chest. Be silent and come out of him. As
- 7:28Speaker 2: he said this, the man's twitching body began to find
- 7:30Speaker 2: control again. His mind cleared like fog being broken up
- 7:34Speaker 2: by the sun. The demon had left, and the man
- 7:38Speaker 2: was saved from further torment. The entire room was silent.
- 7:42Speaker 2: They had seen many people possessed by demons. However, they
- 7:45Speaker 2: had never seen someone possess so much authority over them.
- 7:49Speaker 2: After a few weeks of healing, preaching, and relieving people
- 7:52Speaker 2: of demons, Jesus made his way back to Nazareth, his hometown.
- 7:57Speaker 2: He walked the city streets, greeting loved ones and distant relatives. Jesus'
- 8:02Speaker 2: fame had grown in Judea, but in Nazareth he was
- 8:05Speaker 2: just Jesus the carpenter. As was Jesus' habit, he went
- 8:09Speaker 2: into the local synagogues to preach. Many of his friends
- 8:12Speaker 2: and family were in attendance and watched Jesus open up
- 8:15Speaker 2: the scroll of Isaiah. Jesus read the words of the prophet,'
- 8:19Speaker 2: The Spirit of the Lord is with me because he
- 8:22Speaker 2: has chosen and anointed me to preach good news to
- 8:24Speaker 2: the poor.' He has sent me to bring liberty to
- 8:27Speaker 2: the captives and sight to the blind. He has sent
- 8:31Speaker 2: me to bring liberty to all those who are oppressed.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Jesus paused for a moment and looked out at the crowd.
- 8:38Speaker 2: He gave the scroll back to the attendant. Everyone's gaze
- 8:41Speaker 2: was fixed on Jesus. The silence was so thick it
- 8:45Speaker 2: could be cut with a knife. Today, Jesus began. Today
- 8:49Speaker 2: this word has been fulfilled. As Jesus spoke these words,
- 8:54Speaker 2: people began to mumble and complain. Jesus had just claimed
- 8:58Speaker 2: to be the promised Messiah prophesied by Isaiah. Some of
- 9:01Speaker 2: them scoffed at him and began to leave the synagogue.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Isn't this Joseph's son, the carpenter? they asked. We heard
- 9:09Speaker 2: you did some elaborate healings in Galilee. Why don't you
- 9:13Speaker 2: do some of those here? Then we will believe you.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Jesus sighed. He was heartbroken over his old friends. Truly
- 9:21Speaker 2: a prophet is not welcomed in his hometown, Jesus said.
- 9:25Speaker 2: When the prophets proclaimed repentance before the time of captivity,
- 9:29Speaker 2: they were rejected and killed. When the people heard him
- 9:32Speaker 2: say these things, they were furious. They mobbed towards Jesus
- 9:36Speaker 2: and drove him out of the town towards the ledge
- 9:38Speaker 2: of a hill. They were ready to throw him off
- 9:41Speaker 2: of the hill for blasphemy. They could not stand the
- 9:44Speaker 2: idea of one of their own being so righteous. As
- 9:48Speaker 2: the mob lunged toward him, Jesus slipped through the crowd
- 9:52Speaker 2: and escaped like a thief in the night.
- 10:00Speaker 3: As we begin today's story of Jesus, our Lord's name
- 10:03Speaker 3: is becoming well known in the region. He's traveling throughout
- 10:07Speaker 3: Galilee and was well received. Many trusted him and followed
- 10:12Speaker 3: him and believed on him. They gathered in large multitudes
- 10:15Speaker 3: to hear him and to see the signs and the wonders,
- 10:18Speaker 3: the miracles. These were gracious and beautiful displays of his
- 10:23Speaker 3: power and of his presence and compassion. And while the
- 10:27Speaker 3: heart of Jesus was intent on healing, he is much
- 10:31Speaker 3: more than a miracle worker. So, as he is walking
- 10:34Speaker 3: one day, an official approached him, begging for his son,
- 10:37Speaker 3: who was at home, sick, to be healed. Rather than
- 10:41Speaker 3: go with him as the man asked, Jesus simply told
- 10:44Speaker 3: him to go back to his home to find his
- 10:45Speaker 3: son healed. There was no public miracle. He just said,
- 10:50Speaker 3: the child is well. It was just a word. But
- 10:54Speaker 3: then again, it wasn't just a word. It was the
- 10:57Speaker 3: word of God, the word of Jesus. And his words
- 11:00Speaker 3: have power to heal everything imaginable. The official, we are told,
- 11:06Speaker 3: took Jesus at his word. That is, he believed and
- 11:08Speaker 3: trusted in the word of the Lord Jesus. My prayer
- 11:12Speaker 3: is that many people today would do just that, that
- 11:16Speaker 3: people would take the Lord at his word and believe
- 11:19Speaker 3: in him and trust him. Because the greatest miracle of
- 11:23Speaker 3: all is not a miracle of physical healing, but the
- 11:26Speaker 3: spiritual healing that only Jesus can give. What we really
- 11:30Speaker 3: need to do is to take God at his word
- 11:33Speaker 3: today and to trust him always. This is what this
- 11:37Speaker 3: noble man did. And his faith allowed his son to
- 11:40Speaker 3: be healed while he was still walking home. The man
- 11:43Speaker 3: and his entire household believed in the Lord that day.
- 11:46Speaker 3: They trusted in Jesus. Salvation came to that household through
- 11:50Speaker 3: faith in God's grace through Jesus Christ. Next, we hear
- 11:54Speaker 3: how Jesus was preaching in the synagogue on the Sabbath day.
- 11:58Speaker 3: People crowded in to hang on his every word. Jesus
- 12:01Speaker 3: could compel and captivate a crowd like no one else.
- 12:05Speaker 3: The wisdom and the truth of his words were irresistible
- 12:08Speaker 3: to those who heard. And yet as he spoke, a
- 12:12Speaker 3: voice arose from the back of the room and a
- 12:14Speaker 3: deranged cackle. This was not a man in his right mind,
- 12:17Speaker 3: and Jesus knew it. The demonic presence, demon spirit, spoke
- 12:21Speaker 3: through the man, asking Jesus why he was there. You see,
- 12:25Speaker 3: Satan and his armies, they know Jesus, and they are terrified.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Just as Jesus had faced down Satan in the wilderness,
- 12:33Speaker 3: he walked to this man and commanded the demon to
- 12:36Speaker 3: stop speaking and leave. For all their evil power, demonic
- 12:40Speaker 3: forces are no equal to Jesus. And all who were
- 12:44Speaker 3: there saw the man released from the spirit that had
- 12:47Speaker 3: tormented him. And in Mark 1, 27 and 28, we
- 12:51Speaker 3: read this. The people were all amazed that they ask
- 12:55Speaker 3: each other, what is this? A new teaching and with authority.
- 12:59Speaker 3: He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.
- 13:04Speaker 3: News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
- 13:09Speaker 3: So many were finding faith and salvation and healing and deliverance.
- 13:13Speaker 3: because of Jesus. But not everyone believed, and as we
- 13:18Speaker 3: heard in today's reading, in his own town of Nazareth,
- 13:21Speaker 3: people rejected him. He was in the synagogue one Sabbath,
- 13:24Speaker 3: and the scroll was handed to him, and he read
- 13:27Speaker 3: from the prophet Isaiah that said, The Spirit of the
- 13:29Speaker 3: Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to
- 13:32Speaker 3: proclaim good news to the poor. This was a prophecy
- 13:37Speaker 3: regarding the Messiah, and all who heard this would know
- 13:40Speaker 3: this very well. And so when Jesus said to them, today,
- 13:45Speaker 3: this scripture, this promise has been fulfilled, they understood exactly
- 13:50Speaker 3: what he was saying. Jesus was claiming to be the
- 13:53Speaker 3: very Messiah for whom they waited for so long. They
- 13:58Speaker 3: were skeptical. They even scoffed. Some became angry, not believing Jesus.
- 14:03Speaker 3: And this rejection deeply saddened the Lord, but he was
- 14:06Speaker 3: not surprised. He knew that he would be rejected by
- 14:09Speaker 3: his own And as he went to leave, the crowd
- 14:12Speaker 3: began to get angrier and angrier. And they decided they
- 14:16Speaker 3: needed to kill this man they considered mad, throwing him
- 14:19Speaker 3: from a cliff. Jesus simply walked through the crowd, and
- 14:23Speaker 3: he left behind his hometown and those who rejected him.
- 14:28Speaker 3: In John 1, verse 12, the Bible says, He came
- 14:31Speaker 3: into his own, but his own received him not. But
- 14:35Speaker 3: as many as received him, Jesus, to them gave he
- 14:39Speaker 3: the power to become the sons of God. Rejection would
- 14:44Speaker 3: begin to mark the life of Jesus. And ultimately, it
- 14:48Speaker 3: would lead to his crucifixion. They tried to cancel him.
- 14:53Speaker 3: But he came to die and to be rejected of
- 14:56Speaker 3: men so that he might be received by you and me.
- 14:59Speaker 3: I want to encourage you today. Never reject Jesus. Don't
- 15:03Speaker 3: turn away from Jesus, but trust in Jesus. By turning
- 15:07Speaker 3: from your sins, and receiving him as your Savior and Lord.
- 15:11Speaker 3: As many as received him, to them gave he the
- 15:15Speaker 3: right to be called the children of God. Lord, we
- 15:19Speaker 3: thank you for this promise that we can become your children,
- 15:23Speaker 3: that because of what you have done for us in
- 15:25Speaker 3: living and dying and rising again, that we can have
- 15:28Speaker 3: eternal life. May we receive this promise now and forever.
- 15:32Speaker 3: In your name we pray.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Amen.
