- 0:00Speaker 1: We welcome you back inside the Yukon Men's Ice Hockey Coaches
- 0:03Speaker 1: Show at Bear's Smokehouse, Barbecue and downtown Hartford. Adam Gardino
- 0:07Speaker 1: with you. We are joined by freshman defenseman Trey Scott. Trey,
- 0:11Speaker 1: let's learn a little bit about you before diving into
- 0:13Speaker 1: the meat of this season. You're from Lunenburg, Massachusetts, which
- 0:18Speaker 1: is about ninety minutes from campus. So before the whole
- 0:21Speaker 1: recruiting process began, was you kind of team that you know,
- 0:25Speaker 1: did you follow Yukon in sports? How did it all
- 0:27Speaker 1: work or did Yukon kind of pop up out of
- 0:29Speaker 1: the blue.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Uh? Yeah, I definitely followed him, you know, being from
- 0:32Speaker 2: mass I kind of followed all the Hockey East teams
- 0:36Speaker 2: and Yukon was always, you know, on on my list
- 0:38Speaker 2: of one of the schools that you know, I wanted
- 0:40Speaker 2: to come and play. So growing up just following them
- 0:43Speaker 2: and seeing where they are now it's pretty cool.
- 0:47Speaker 1: And what were those early conversations with Mike Kavanaugh, like
- 0:50Speaker 1: before he was officially your your coach?
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yeah? So I actually came up last summer two summers
- 0:56Speaker 2: ago just because I lived so close before I went
- 0:59Speaker 2: out to play in the us HL. You know, just
- 1:02Speaker 2: to get a feel for the campus and and the coaches.
- 1:05Speaker 2: You know, nothing but good things were said. I loved
- 1:09Speaker 2: everything they had to say about the program, about the team,
- 1:11Speaker 2: you know, what they're doing here. I obviously liked what
- 1:14Speaker 2: they said about about me and in my game, So
- 1:17Speaker 2: so it was all positive.
- 1:18Speaker 1: There again, we're joined by Trey Scott here on the
- 1:22Speaker 1: Hockey Coaches Show. You've been a mainstay in the lineup,
- 1:26Speaker 1: but that wasn't true right out of the gate. You
- 1:29Speaker 1: didn't play in the first three games, and then that
- 1:30Speaker 1: second weekend you got your your break to play against
- 1:33Speaker 1: holy Cross and you haven't looked back. So how was
- 1:36Speaker 1: it through training camp in the start of the season,
- 1:38Speaker 1: where you know, early on things weren't necessarily a given
- 1:41Speaker 1: for you.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Yeah, so, you know, obviously it's no secret I didn't
- 1:45Speaker 2: I didn't play those first three games, but I wouldn't.
- 1:47Speaker 2: I wouldn't change it for anything. You know, the coaches
- 1:50Speaker 2: are are super supportive and and they've been fair the
- 1:53Speaker 2: whole way, and I'm just I'm just thankful they they
- 1:57Speaker 2: they gave me a chance that that second weekend.
- 2:00Speaker 1: There aren't a lot of players who come in as
- 2:04Speaker 1: a first year college student and have the luxury of
- 2:07Speaker 1: being teammates with a twenty five year old in John
- 2:09Speaker 1: Spetz with one hundred and fifty five college games under
- 2:12Speaker 1: his belt. What have you been able to pick up
- 2:14Speaker 1: from him, someone who is such a veteran of this level.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Yeah, he's been awesome to me. I actually sit next
- 2:21Speaker 2: him in the locker room, so we're talking constantly. And
- 2:24Speaker 2: his knowledge of the game is the highest of any
- 2:28Speaker 2: player I've played with. He's super smart. He knows the
- 2:31Speaker 2: game inside it out, and you know, I'm just very
- 2:34Speaker 2: lucky to be able to ask him, you know, whenever
- 2:36Speaker 2: I have any question, and he always has an answer
- 2:38Speaker 2: for it.
- 2:41Speaker 1: You mentioned earlier the growth and the trajectory of this
- 2:44Speaker 1: program with the new arena and now knocking on the
- 2:49Speaker 1: door of the NCAA tournament, and last week coach keV
- 2:52Speaker 1: talked about to the media at large that he posts
- 2:56Speaker 1: the pairwise standings in the rankings in the locker room
- 2:59Speaker 1: in the soley for you guys, and he says that,
- 3:03Speaker 1: you know, it's he wants you to be able to
- 3:05Speaker 1: say your goals out loud and manifest them. You don't
- 3:08Speaker 1: want to shy away and pretend that you aren't trying
- 3:10Speaker 1: to make the NCAA tournament for the first time in
- 3:12Speaker 1: program history. So how freeing is it for your coach
- 3:15Speaker 1: to say, yeah, let's talk about this, let's let's try
- 3:17Speaker 1: to make this the thing that we're all trying to achieve.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it's got to feel pretty good. I mean to
- 3:23Speaker 2: think about being a part of a first team that's
- 3:25Speaker 2: able to do that's pretty special. And I love the way,
- 3:28Speaker 2: you know, we're handling it and talking about it. There's
- 3:30Speaker 2: no reason to shy away from it. At the beginning
- 3:33Speaker 2: of the season, that was our goal. Before any practices
- 3:36Speaker 2: or any training, we we had a meeting and we
- 3:39Speaker 2: were told that that our goal is to hear our
- 3:41Speaker 2: name get called for the selection. So it's pretty cool
- 3:44Speaker 2: to see, you know, how how we've handled that so far,
- 3:47Speaker 2: and we're so close to that happening.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Again. We're joined by freshman defenseman Tray Scott here on
- 3:54Speaker 1: the Hockey Coaches Show. The last game on Friday against Maine,
- 3:59Speaker 1: it was an overtime win, and when overtime began, it's
- 4:03Speaker 1: three on three and you were one of the three
- 4:05Speaker 1: guys on the ice along with Hudson Chandor and Jake Richard. So,
- 4:10Speaker 1: what does it mean to have the trust of your
- 4:13Speaker 1: coaches and teammates to know that, hey, you're the defenseman
- 4:16Speaker 1: that's out there to begin the overtime?
- 4:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it means everything, you know. Just just to have
- 4:21Speaker 2: that feeling and to have that responsibilities awesome, you know,
- 4:25Speaker 2: I don't take it for granted at all.
- 4:27Speaker 1: And to also be out.
- 4:28Speaker 2: There with with those two guys who I have the
- 4:31Speaker 2: most trust and makes my job a whole lot easier
- 4:33Speaker 2: as well.
- 4:36Speaker 1: How tired were you at the end of that first shift?
- 4:38Speaker 1: I think it was over two minutes that you guys
- 4:39Speaker 1: got It was.
- 4:42Speaker 2: A little over two minutes just getting had an ideas
- 4:45Speaker 2: on that was it took a little a little while
- 4:48Speaker 2: for me to catch my breath after that.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Good thing you had a time out in your back pocket.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Let everybody catch their breath. After that penalty was drawn
- 4:58Speaker 1: by Joey Muldowney. A couple of minutes later, you're on
- 5:01Speaker 1: the ice again and it's a four on three situation. So,
- 5:03Speaker 1: as the loan defenceman with three talented forwards out there,
- 5:06Speaker 1: what are you trying to generate in order to ultimately
- 5:10Speaker 1: do what you did, which is get the game winner?
- 5:12Speaker 2: Yeah, So I mean the other three forwards that I
- 5:15Speaker 2: have there, you know, all of them have the ability
- 5:18Speaker 2: to put the puck in the back on that and
- 5:20Speaker 2: Joey's done it, you know, too many times to count
- 5:22Speaker 2: this year. So with some of my job really is
- 5:25Speaker 2: is to kind of open up those guys, and if
- 5:27Speaker 2: I'm the guy who ends up getting the look, I
- 5:29Speaker 2: get it. But but mainly I have I have three
- 5:31Speaker 2: forwards who are all very capable of putting the puck
- 5:34Speaker 2: behind the net, which Richie was able to do after
- 5:37Speaker 2: you know, I had an open shot, took it, kicks
- 5:39Speaker 2: out right to how many buries it?
- 5:41Speaker 1: So is there any element obviously you're trying to score,
- 5:46Speaker 1: but is there an element of in that situation kind
- 5:49Speaker 1: of knowing, hey, he's crashing that side. If I get
- 5:51Speaker 1: a rebound over there, it's not going to be the
- 5:53Speaker 1: worst thing in the world. Or are you just you know,
- 5:55Speaker 1: tunnel vision, just trying to score it yourself. Uh?
- 5:58Speaker 2: No, there's obviously some some light game plan behind it.
- 6:02Speaker 2: You know, both the guys on the on our flanks
- 6:04Speaker 2: are that's their one time side. So if I can
- 6:06Speaker 2: kind of draw that that loan defender towards me a
- 6:10Speaker 2: little bit. It gives Rich a little extra time on
- 6:12Speaker 2: the backside if any rebounds pop out or I or
- 6:14Speaker 2: if I want to slide it over to him.
- 6:18Speaker 1: A couple more for you. If we're joined by Trey Scott,
- 6:20Speaker 1: freshman defense for Yukon here and the coaches show. Kai
- 6:23Speaker 1: Jamboree is another freshman. Was your deepairing against Maine? How
- 6:28Speaker 1: do you too compliment each other your styles of play?
- 6:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I love playing with him. You know, we're always
- 6:34Speaker 2: here at the rink and we're always talking about hockey
- 6:36Speaker 2: and how to improve out there. You know, he's awesome
- 6:39Speaker 2: to play with. He's got a ton of energy, a
- 6:41Speaker 2: ton of upside. You know, the way he sees the game,
- 6:43Speaker 2: the way he skates. It makes my job a whole
- 6:46Speaker 2: lot easier. And also just just being able to play
- 6:49Speaker 2: with him in the offensive zone, especially, you know, he's
- 6:52Speaker 2: he's a super gifted skater and and he sees the
- 6:55Speaker 2: ice well. And you know, every time, every time we're
- 6:57Speaker 2: out there, you know, we feel like there's a chance
- 6:59Speaker 2: that we can that we can generate some offense.
- 7:02Speaker 1: First year in a college campus. What's your favorite thing
- 7:05Speaker 1: about Yukon in stores, Oh.
- 7:07Speaker 2: It's got to be the Games here. I mean, I've
- 7:09Speaker 2: never played for for my school, let alone, let alone
- 7:13Speaker 2: this many people, So, you know, just just seeing how
- 7:15Speaker 2: many people support and how many people come to the games,
- 7:19Speaker 2: it's pretty pretty cool.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Trey, thanks so much for hopping on with us and
- 7:23Speaker 1: giving us some time here tonight. Yeah, thanks for having
- 7:26Speaker 1: me all right again, That was freshman defenseman Trey Scott.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Coming up next, we wrap up the show with Mike Kavanaugh.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Few more minutes with him here at Bear's Barbecue in
- 7:34Speaker 1: downtown Hartford. This is Yukon men's ice hockey from Learfield,
- 7:37Speaker 1: presented by Dime Bank.
