- 3:27All right, Alex, now that I've got that wildly long plug out of
- 3:33the way, I'm trying new things. It may work, it may not work.
- 3:36I'll tweak it. This was your movie, This was
- 3:40your week. What did we watch?
- 3:42And let's just get right into it.
- 3:43Tell us about the movie. To watch sleepaway camp, it's
- 3:50what is it 83? Yes, or is 84.
- 3:54I thought it was 83. Said May.
- 3:56May 84. 83 I'm looking at it. Oh.
- 4:01You say you called Wikipedia a liar.
- 4:03You called. You called me a liar.
- 4:05Wikipedia. Any Joe Schmoe can just go
- 4:08change that. But yeah, no sleep.
- 4:13Play Camp 83 old horror. Very campy slasher flick.
- 4:25What do you draw? What do you draw?
- 4:27Blanks. You got this you.
- 4:29Can spoil this shit, it's been around for fucking 40 years.
- 4:33You can spoil it. How do I start?
- 4:39Dude, it's just there's so much shit.
- 4:43About a little. Girl who goes to camp and just
- 4:47gets bullied and gets revenge on all of the bullies and chicken
- 4:54shits and pecker heads and. Yeah, some great insults being
- 4:59slung around in this in this one.
- 5:01The 80s, the 80s banter because it's, it's, it's just a fucking
- 5:06pure 80s flick. It's a pure 80s horror flick.
- 5:10And it works to this movie's advantage because usually like a
- 5:13movie like sleep away camp, people don't often come back to,
- 5:18right? Like a lot of this generation
- 5:19isn't going back to sleep away Camp, you know, in the
- 5:24zeitgeist, I guess it's Friday, 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on
- 5:29Elm Street, yadda, yadda, yadda. And Sleepaway Camp is one of
- 5:33those movies that people kinda know it's either you've seen her
- 5:37or you've not. I remember seeing this at a
- 5:39young age and Amelia, I went and that was fucked up.
- 5:43This movie has a 12 kill body count.
- 5:47That is phenomenal for this movie.
- 5:50It's a lot of shit. It's a lot of it's a lot.
- 5:53Of dead, dead kids. It's, I mean, it's all, yeah,
- 5:56it's a lot of dead kids, but it's, I like, I like the
- 5:59approach in this movie of let's let's tell and not show fully.
- 6:05I feel like it's more impactful in this film 'cause you see the
- 6:07kills when they happen, but it's not like, and they are gruesome.
- 6:14They're, well, they're gruesome, but like it's not like in your
- 6:16face. It's not like it's, you're not
- 6:18watching a knife penetrate. You're not, you're not seeing a
- 6:21lot of the actual physical violence.
- 6:23It's, it's pretty good 80s campy cuts, which I appreciate.
- 6:28I appreciate the cuts. I appreciate the just like the
- 6:32campiness of it all. So if you, I, I love sleep away
- 6:36camp. I've always loved sleep away
- 6:37camp. Noah this was your first time
- 6:39watching the movie, right? Yeah.
- 6:42Dude, I. I loved it.
- 6:44It was like, I've been like going back recently.
- 6:47I watched Nightmare Nightmare on Elm Street recently and a bunch
- 6:51of like those old classic horror flicks and this was I put this
- 6:55right up there with it. This is like this is this is
- 6:58prime 80s horror movie. It's got all of the staples.
- 7:03You got your like mystery killer and I mean I was definitely
- 7:06guessing who is going to be and I did not expect the twist at
- 7:09the end. No one.
- 7:13That I I think is really good like I did I did definitely
- 7:16didn't even get any hints of that except for like maybe the
- 7:19little. They give it away.
- 7:22Yeah. But I.
- 7:23Still didn't. I still didn't see it coming.
- 7:26I really liked it. I thought it was good, like the
- 7:27effects were good. They were pretty limited but I
- 7:30think what they did show looks really good.
- 7:34Oh yeah, the bee. We can we can talk about some of
- 7:36these kills, but my favorite it's.
- 7:39Been out for so fucking long. It's been out for a long, long
- 7:42time. So like for me, it's the beehive
- 7:45kill. I think that is one of the best
- 7:49examples of like, it's narrative, it's shown, but it's
- 7:57not. It's the aftermath that you're
- 7:59like, holy fuck, that's a lot of bees.
- 8:02Like my immediate thought was in 83, this was not a safe scene to
- 8:05be around. A lot of this you're like, no.
- 8:09It was borderline, like, is this OK?
- 8:14Yeah, I mean. Like a lot.
- 8:15Of the movie in general. That's what I mean.
- 8:17Like they didn't they don't show everything, but then when they
- 8:20do the you'd like get the idea like, Oh no, that was like that
- 8:24was rough. Like that guy, he the
- 8:26specifically with the bees one. They're like burrowing in his
- 8:29arm and I'm like, Oh my God, dude.
- 8:31Brutal, dude. I hate it.
- 8:34The curling iron scene is obviously like a stomach Turner.
- 8:37Alex thought Alex accidentally was like, oh, I think that's in
- 8:40two. Because there's three films
- 8:42altogether, Correct? There's four.
- 8:45There's five Sleepoamps. Yeah, there's 5.
- 8:50Yeah, the last two are like pretty older, like came out in
- 8:532. Thousands.
- 8:54OK, OK, man, I mean it, this is a fun movie.
- 9:00It's a fun 80s slasher flick. It's it's hard to like knock any
- 9:06points off this film because it does a lot right.
- 9:09I like I like how it's shot in film.
- 9:12I love the can't be acting. I love the accents I.
- 9:17Thought the acting was pretty decent.
- 9:18Like they're all kids. They're, they all actually, I
- 9:21think like they probably all were kids at the time.
- 9:24Yeah, 100%. But it, it felt very real.
- 9:27Like I, I went to sleep away camp when I was a kid and it
- 9:31like, of course it wasn't in the 80s, but like all those like
- 9:34stereotypes that you're seeing in these characters, like that's
- 9:37all real. Like that's, that's very
- 9:39relatable. To like the bully, the macho,
- 9:42Yeah. The like the the people going
- 9:45through puberty at, you know, like, and that's what a lot of
- 9:48this is. It's it's just that it's like a
- 9:52lot of kids becoming like kind of teenagers in this film.
- 9:55Yeah, playing water balloon. On Play Baseball, playing a bit
- 9:59of baseball with the boys. Balloon on the roof.
- 10:04Fights on the roof. You get down from there.
- 10:06Well, we would, but the ladder when you said that, no, I
- 10:09fucking died. The ladder.
- 10:10Fell we can't because the ladder fell over it's.
- 10:13Like. I think about like what would
- 10:16have happened if you were at camp and then you were just on
- 10:20the roof. Like you'd probably be sent home
- 10:22for that. But they're like, we don't know.
- 10:24We're just, we're paying these 15 year olds $10 a summer to
- 10:28look after you. It's the.
- 10:29Fucking 80s. It was the 80s too, yeah.
- 10:33I mean, the chef is in the kitchen drinking.
- 10:36Oh fuck that guy. Fuck the chef, dude.
- 10:40What chef? Both.
- 10:41Both of. Them.
- 10:42No, not not both of them. Just the. 01 dude could have
- 10:45spoke up. For sure, yeah.
- 10:47I mean, you know, see something, say something.
- 10:49But he is JJ. Arty dead.
- 10:51Arty was a bad man. Arty he got.
- 10:55He got everything coming to him. Arty, that was also a very good
- 10:58kill. That's the only kill where
- 11:00you're like. We don't know if he's dead.
- 11:03We don't. I mean.
- 11:06He's let's. He's probably.
- 11:08You'd get fucked up, but you'd survive that.
- 11:10He's probably not dead. I mean, we, you know, you can
- 11:13survive a lot of burning Niki Lauda, you know, survive a lot.
- 11:17Of burning. You guys watched that last
- 11:19night? Yeah, we did.
- 11:20So it's it's front of the mind. I really liked it.
- 11:23I mean, like, I don't know. Do you, did you guys like, feel
- 11:26when there were like other kills?
- 11:27Did you feel like, yeah, like you like you've got him, Like
- 11:30that was warranted because I felt like Artie was the only
- 11:34kill that was like, good. No, they were all.
- 11:37Assholes like real big Dick heads dude.
- 11:41They had it common. Even.
- 11:44Paul What did Paul do? Oh well, no, Paul even kind of
- 11:48had it coming. I, I mean, I guess I think Paul
- 11:51was just, you know, he's an excited, he's a kid.
- 11:54He's, you know, he's feeling, he's grown up a little bit and
- 11:56he gets a little excited. I don't think he deserved to be
- 12:00beheaded necessarily. I I think it's tough.
- 12:08It's not like the kills are justified.
- 12:10It's just, it's, it's, it's getting back at the bully,
- 12:13right? That's, that's what this is.
- 12:15It's getting back at the bully. It's bullying the bully to a
- 12:19degree, while also kind of at the end exploring a little bit
- 12:24of modern day stuff because that's what a lot of.
- 12:26People, that's a crazy thing to just drop at the end of the
- 12:29movie. Like that's the, that's the
- 12:31whole movie right there. I mean, it is.
- 12:34I mean, people look at Sleep Away Camp now and go, oh, this
- 12:38is this kind of type of film. Actually, this is what this was.
- 12:40This is what the director was referring to type stuff.
- 12:43And it's like, oh, well, yeah, now that I'm an adult, I can
- 12:48kind of see that. But like, during the film, no
- 12:51one knows what that is. No, like you don't know like we
- 12:55have. We cannot spoil this one part
- 12:58about the movie for those who haven't seen Sleep Away Camp,
- 13:00because this is like the crux. I have like a really funny like
- 13:07random fun fact about that though.
- 13:10I mean I. Think we just, let's just talk
- 13:12about it. Let's just say it because then
- 13:13it's like. OK, fine, fine.
- 13:15It's from the. It's it's so, it's so
- 13:17interesting. It's such a cool like idea.
- 13:19I feel like, I feel like this idea is where the movie comes
- 13:22from. And then the guy was like, no, I
- 13:24can't. Like we can't do that.
- 13:26Yeah. I mean, yeah, Alex, please let
- 13:29us know. At the end of the film, we
- 13:32learned that Felicia Rose Angie is the killer.
- 13:37Yes. Little do we know, throughout
- 13:39the entire movie, it kind of points towards that it's her
- 13:41cousin Ricky. You kind of.
- 13:43Is that who you thought it was? No, I.
- 13:45Yeah, I thought it was good to be Ricky killing.
- 13:46You because of the hair at that one point, yeah.
- 13:48At one point they like show his face pretty much when he walked
- 13:52into the cabin to go with the curling iron.
- 13:57But she comes out, she stands up after cutting off the kids head
- 14:04and trans. Yeah.
- 14:09She's trans, not by choice. Unfortunately.
- 14:12If you pay attention to the movie, it's because her aunt
- 14:16wanted a daughter because she already had a son.
- 14:19Yes. And forced it upon.
- 14:22It's fucked up, I. Mean, yeah.
- 14:25And there's it's like, so it's so quick, like blinking, you'll
- 14:28miss it. There's like stuff for like the
- 14:30kids obviously saw their dad with another man.
- 14:35Yep. And then having.
- 14:37Losing their dad at the beginning of the film too.
- 14:39Yeah. And then that happening and then
- 14:41having this like clearly troubled idea of of gender and
- 14:46stuff and then. Yeah.
- 14:49It it was just, I thought it was really interesting.
- 14:51Like it's a really, it's pretty like I wouldn't expect that out
- 14:56of an 80s movie. Like, I know like all that stuff
- 14:58was obviously relevant back then, but now it feels like
- 15:01whoa, like. That's it was really taboo
- 15:03that's. An interesting concept.
- 15:05Well, that's a good point, Alex, and why I know it too.
- 15:08But like Alex brought up that it was taboo back then, like
- 15:11especially to do that in a film with children, right?
- 15:14Because of this point in the film, what it's saying basically
- 15:17is like it it they're confused about sexuality, they're
- 15:23confused about gender. And like the movies themselves,
- 15:28they're just they're growing up and they're dealing with these
- 15:32bullies. They're dealing with their
- 15:34hormones. And you know, on the one hand,
- 15:38you know, Angie is dealing with do I want to be Angie?
- 15:44You know, So like it really explores that topic in a once
- 15:50you know the twist and you watch the film, you're like, oh fuck,
- 15:55it's been it's being explored the entire time, Like it's been
- 15:59being talked about the entire time.
- 16:01Why won't you shower with us? What do you queer?
- 16:05And it's like, what? Why would you say that she only
- 16:07showers? In the mornings.
- 16:08All these showers in the mornings and.
- 16:11There's a lot she doesn't want to go swimming.
- 16:13Doesn't want to go. Swimming.
- 16:14She doesn't want people to. Fear of swimming from the
- 16:17fucking. Boat Fear that it's from the
- 16:19boat. Plus, you know, then at that
- 16:22point you're a bit exposed. She doesn't want, she doesn't
- 16:25want Paul to touch her because then he'll obviously figure it
- 16:29out. I mean, yeah, I mean, it's it's
- 16:32it's it is really wild to. It kind of shocks me more of
- 16:38this film isn't as studied and spoken about because of how you
- 16:43would think back then. People would see that,
- 16:46especially. I mean, the image of a child at
- 16:51this point in the movie, full on nudity.
- 16:55I mean, it's obviously. The fun tidbit about.
- 16:59I have, yeah. Go on.
- 17:01So the person because it's clearly a dude wearing a mask.
- 17:07Yes. What a great mask it is that is
- 17:10going to be that is. Going to be.
- 17:12Haunting me for quite a while. Yeah, that that mask rules.
- 17:19They couldn't find anyone to shoot that scene.
- 17:22Nobody wanted to do that. Yeah.
- 17:24Oh shit. And then someone finally agreed
- 17:27to do it, as long as they didn't credit him in any way.
- 17:32So. And no one can remember who this
- 17:35guy is. I put that guy's now that guy
- 17:38was probably just a grip, like he was just a guy in the crew.
- 17:41He's like, oh fuck, I'll do it. Hey, show my cock, whatever.
- 17:45No way. It's like that, like, 'cause
- 17:47it's a fucking crazy scene and then no one wanted to do it.
- 17:52So he's like, I'll do it as long as you don't credit me and don't
- 17:55tell anyone. That I do this.
- 17:56I think if I were that guy, I'd be at parties.
- 17:59But you ever seen sleep away camp?
- 18:01I'm just fucking I'm I'm that at the end.
- 18:03That's me. That's my Dick.
- 18:06And I imagine that guy, you know, he goes home, visit
- 18:08family, they're watching a movie.
- 18:10What movies is sleep away camping?
- 18:11He's like, oh God, they're going to sleep.
- 18:14They won't know. His mom.
- 18:16I think I. Know that penis?
- 18:17Kind of surprised. I'm kind of surprised that that
- 18:21was the thing that nobody wanted to do, because the entire movie
- 18:25balances on that ending shot. It does.
- 18:29It does, yeah. If the movie doesn't end like
- 18:31that, I don't think it's as good as it is.
- 18:35No, I don't think so. I don't.
- 18:36I don't know how else. I mean, I guess they could have
- 18:38been like they could have like from behind and had the people
- 18:42just say that. But I think like.
- 18:46No, I'm saying if it doesn't have that ending, like if it
- 18:49doesn't explore Angie like that in the film at all, and I think
- 18:55it ends just in the generic horror like 80s slasher film, I
- 18:58don't think it's as good as it is.
- 19:00I think that ending, it's like, whoa, holy shit.
- 19:02Like now I get the impact. I understand now.
- 19:06Whereas like if it's just like and the killer was this little
- 19:09boy all along and it's like. And it was Angela, and she's
- 19:12actually Peter. Anyway, credits.
- 19:14Credits and it's like, well, that sucks This it's like what
- 19:18happens because Noah said at the end movie, there's a whole
- 19:21another movie here. Yeah.
- 19:23There's enough there's. Four more I wonder.
- 19:26I wonder like we maybe we'll watch them, but do they explore
- 19:31that late like at all in the further movies?
- 19:34Because I've only seen the 1st. One she's not.
- 19:36In the second one. Oh fuck.
- 19:39I've only seen the. Second one she comes back for
- 19:413rd, 4th and 5th. So I wonder if they explore that
- 19:44at all. I've seen something about a
- 19:46fifth. I think there's only four.
- 19:47I swear there's only four though.
- 19:48Well, after after. Well, is she comes back, but is
- 19:51she playing the same character or is she?
- 19:53Yeah. No, she plays Angela.
- 19:55Oh. Now we.
- 19:57Can't stop here. We got to look at those.
- 20:00We're not done with those series, which I'm fine.
- 20:02We're gonna have to watch that. We're gonna have to watch those
- 20:04other ones. I again Alex, phenomenal first
- 20:09pick. Great first pick.
- 20:13I hope this makes you happy that we went.
- 20:17Have random information. Yeah, dude.
- 20:21Bring it dude. So.
- 20:22See, I already told you this before, like we were like
- 20:26beginning to set up Noah. But yeah, Nick, you know who CKY
- 20:31is? The Band.
- 20:32Yeah, yeah, yeah. The lead singer Darren Miller.
- 20:35Well, the old lead singer Darren Miller.
- 20:37He is married to Felicia Rose and has been since like 2000.
- 20:40And eight, that's fuck I would have.
- 20:43That's wild. Pretty cool.
- 20:47I mean some. Random shinfo.
- 20:49So where is Camp Algonqua? It's in Algonquin, it's in.
- 20:55Algonquin. New York.
- 20:57It's near the like New Hampshire border, but I, I couldn't, I, I
- 21:02looked it up, I was trying to figure it out.
- 21:04It looks like it was just a tiny little.
- 21:06Like a little thing I didn't run.
- 21:08For very long but it was it is a real sleep away camp that was I
- 21:12think it it could have been owned by the YMCA.
- 21:15Like if you look at most summer camps they all are on YMCA.
- 21:20Got it now before. Oh, do you have another tidbit
- 21:23Alex? Your eyes got opened up from it.
- 21:26My question to you guys is this, before we give it a rating,
- 21:30would you want to see this remade in today's time?
- 21:34No, I think it's perfect the way it is.
- 21:36Fantastic. Because they would, because
- 21:38movies today don't know how to like, don't know how to like
- 21:42hold their tongue. They just want to like exposite
- 21:45things. And this movie like just drip
- 21:48feeds you little, little clues, like a little bit of information
- 21:51here and there. I think it was perfect.
- 21:53And do shit to divert your mind from the shit they gave you.
- 21:57Exactly, exactly. This movie does a great job at
- 22:00subverting your attention away long enough because over here
- 22:04it's doing something and it wants you to pay attention here.
- 22:07But then they're like, yeah, but what if you looked over here,
- 22:09though? You're like, oh, yeah, what is
- 22:11that? And then while this something's
- 22:12happening there, you're like, oh, shit, blink and you miss it.
- 22:15It's great how they did this. And for the director, Robert
- 22:20Hilzik, Hilzik. Hilzik.
- 22:23Yeah, it's, it's Hilzik to have the foresight to do and make
- 22:27this film the way it was made and to explore these topics back
- 22:32in the 80s. It's wild.
- 22:33It's awesome. It's it's, it's great.
- 22:34But I mean, a lot of old horror films do explore a lot of
- 22:41sexuality and gender question and just like puberty itself and
- 22:48all of that. That's why I love, love.
- 22:51I love old horror movies 'cause they're, when you dig in, you're
- 22:54like, oh, that's about that. It's literally about that.
- 22:58You're like, holy shit, how did I not catch that?
- 23:00And now I'm 33 going, I get it, you know, 33 and 2025.
- 23:06You're like, oh, I understand, Yeah.
- 23:08Super good, super good. I don't think, I don't think you
- 23:12could necessarily make a movie like that today, specifically in
- 23:15the in the current climate. I just think like the
- 23:19implications of a movie like this, would it like people would
- 23:24have a problem with it today on both sides?
- 23:27I think because like what is the insinuation is that she killed
- 23:31all these people because she's actually a a boy forced to live
- 23:35as a like it's the the implications of it would be very
- 23:39different today as they would have been back then.
- 23:42But right, I think, I think I just thought it was really good.
- 23:45I think it's perfect. I love it.
- 23:47Love this film, Alex. I'm.
- 23:48So I'm so, I'm so stoked that Noah really likes it.
- 23:51Dude, it was great, dude. I love this.
- 23:56Because it was like, it's one thing for like a a movie.
- 23:58Just the last thing I promise it's like.
- 24:00Yeah, go on, please. For just like a fun slasher
- 24:02thing, but and like, like when I say I was like watching those
- 24:06movies, they kind of just go and go and go until they end and
- 24:10nothing really comes of it. This was like this, this has
- 24:13like, it ends and you're like, I, I want to, I want to see more
- 24:16like I need to know more. Well, you get like a, like a, a
- 24:20Michael Myers, a Jason, a Freddie, and it's like we've
- 24:23killed him. And then the last shot is.
- 24:26But he's back. Yeah, it's like this.
- 24:28Is like this is like, how are they going to deal with this?
- 24:31Like what? What even do you do?
- 24:34Well, but in an instance like that, like what happens at the
- 24:36end and how it ends? Like OK, so where do we go from
- 24:39that ending? Yeah.
- 24:41Like and now we need to watch the rest of Sleep Away camp.
- 24:45Look at it. Look at this man.
- 24:46Look at this smug bastard. This is this is this was a, this
- 24:49was a great choice. Come on, you're coming out of
- 24:52the gate strong here. I'm I'm going to have to make my
- 24:55Yeah, I don't. Know how you're going to have to
- 24:56follow this up with something good.
- 24:59Fuck, Alex is so happy. Fun stuff.
- 25:04Alex, you pick the film, you rate it first.
- 25:06You. Little bias.
- 25:08I'm going to say 10 out of 10. All right.
- 25:11I think we do things on A5 scale, but we do 10s out of 10s
- 25:13today. Oh.
- 25:14Five out of five. Sorry.
- 25:16That's fine. I don't care.
- 25:17We're not structured. It's fine, no?
- 25:21I I get a 5 out of five. I would show this to anybody who
- 25:24likes horror movies. I think this is Noah's first
- 25:27five out of five. Well, the the rating system is.
- 25:31Yeah, it is because the rating system is like I rate it on like
- 25:35what I recommend this to people. Yeah.
- 25:38And like what I just like, just watch it.
- 25:40I'm not saying anything. Just watch it.
- 25:42Yeah. So I, I would say 5 out of five.
- 25:46I thought it was perfect. I mean, isn't it, it's an 80s
- 25:49movie, so you can get away with some of the effects being a
- 25:52little bit less than what you might hope for.
- 25:56But I, I just, I loved it. I can't say enough good about
- 25:59it. Hell, he goes.
- 26:02Five out of five. This movie is a classic.
- 26:03This is a perfect 80s horror slasher flick.
- 26:07This is definitely one of those movies, as Noah said, that I
- 26:10would tell someone who hasn't seen it watch it.
- 26:13And if they went, what's it about?
- 26:14I'd be like, watch the film, you know?
- 26:17Yeah, I just. Said like it's a camp slasher
- 26:20flick, you know and, but that's it.
- 26:23But. 80 slasher flick that's. Yeah, that's it.
- 26:26That's all they get. Because like, this is one of
- 26:28those movies that I think needs to be watched.
- 26:31If you're into horror movies and you haven't seen Sleepaway Camp,
- 26:35you need to see this movie. It is a gem.
- 26:37It is great. It is so overlooked and it
- 26:40pisses me off so bad. So five out of five, that is a
- 26:44perfect score on the show. First ever it came from screen
- 26:49box. Perfect score.
- 26:51Perfect score for this absolute gem.
- 26:55We're doing things on fives boys, so let's remember that
- 26:58Fives, we do things on fives. So this gets 5 bloody knives out
- 27:03of five with a dope 12 kit body kill count.
- 27:09Very good Sleep away camp. Is there anything else anybody
- 27:13wanted to leave us off on with Sleep away camp?
- 27:16Are you guys ready to put a bow on it?
- 27:18I'm all good. Alex has another thing.
- 27:21No, put a bow on it like her finger.
- 27:23Sorry, put a bow on it. Oh yeah, put a.
- 27:25String so that she doesn't forget.
- 27:27Yes, I wouldn't forget, would I? Perhaps.
- 27:31I would like to. Free a little bit.
- 27:33I want a movie about her. How'd she get like that?
- 27:37Yeah, no, they don't really explore that.
- 27:39I I would love that movie so the.
- 27:42Sleepaway Camp Cinematic Universe is rich with ideas.
- 27:46It's beckoning. It is beckoning.
- 27:48So all right, everybody. Well, thank you so much for
