- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:20Happy Tuesday. So before I get into the stories
- 0:24for today, I wanted to remind you guys that tomorrow there
- 0:26will be an episode, but instead of Mini Scroll, it will be my
- 0:31interview with Heather and Whitney from The Real Housewives
- 0:33of Salt Lake City. And I know we have a lot of
- 0:36Bravo fans that listen to this podcast, but I also know we have
- 0:39a lot of non Bravo fans. But I think it's still an
- 0:43interview. If you guys even like, even if
- 0:45you don't watch Bravo and you don't care about housewives,
- 0:47it's still a really interesting one because I tried to keep it
- 0:49very Internet culture focused. Like, we talked a lot about
- 0:52having a chronically online fan base and how that impacts their
- 0:57experience on the show in real life as like reality TV
- 1:01celebrities. So I hope you guys will get
- 1:03something from it. It was a wild, wild interview.
- 1:06As I said last week, they were so energetic and fun and just
- 1:10like, silly the whole time. But I think it was OK.
- 1:14All right, let's just get into the stories for today.
- 1:17So the first story that I have for you guys is a bit of tech
- 1:20news. Internet Archive is under siege
- 1:23by hackers, So the Intranet Archive is the largest preserver
- 1:28of intranet activity worldwide. It's run by a nonprofit
- 1:32organization based in San Francisco, and it's responsible
- 1:35for the popular Wayback Machine, which launched in 1996.
- 1:40Last week, the nonprofit was attacked by hackers, where they
- 1:43leaked information of millions of users and quote defaced it
- 1:46with a message taunting the nonprofit's website for running
- 1:49on a shoestring budget, according to the Washington
- 1:53Post. That is just so mean, just like
- 1:55so petty and savage. The attack has impacted over 900
- 2:00billion with AB pages archived by Internet Archive on the
- 2:06Wayback Machine. Now to prevent further leaks,
- 2:09Internet Archive has taken the Wayback Machine offline for the
- 2:12past week, which is the longest it has been down in 30 years.
- 2:17This has caused a lot of discussion about the importance
- 2:20of archiving online history, especially given how fast-paced
- 2:24everything is. And we talked a bit about this
- 2:26on the Myspace episode on a my Myspace deep dive that we did, I
- 2:30don't know, a few months ago, you know, you can't find old
- 2:34Myspace profiles because they were, there was like some server
- 2:37glitch and they were basically just like wiped clean.
- 2:39So, you know, profiles, I think it was up until like 2014 are
- 2:43just gone with all the photos and all the information, all the
- 2:47data. And the same can be said for so
- 2:49many things. Like even as like a digital
- 2:52media journalist articles that I wrote, I don't know, sometimes
- 2:56even like five years ago, as early as five years ago, you
- 2:59can't find them anymore. Like no matter how hard you put
- 3:02like my name together with all the different keywords with the
- 3:05publication title, you cannot find this.
- 3:08There is such a common misconception that the Internet
- 3:12is forever. And I think, you know, it makes
- 3:14sense. It felt like forever.
- 3:15It felt like having this big digital footprint and would
- 3:17follow us forever when we were younger.
- 3:20And like, you know, our parents just had to say that because you
- 3:22want to be careful what you post on the Internet like that still
- 3:24rings true. But our digital footprint, at
- 3:27least from, you know, the 2000s, twenty 10s, it's not as
- 3:32preserved, I think as a lot of us thought it would be.
- 3:35And Internet Archive is one of the ways or one of the tools
- 3:39that, you know, has been actually preserving that.
- 3:41And it's so important to preserve our Internet history.
- 3:44Like, it's crazy to think that given how fast-paced everything
- 3:47is and the rate of change in technology, like the fact that
- 3:52we are just losing decades of information all the time, like
- 3:56genuinely all the time. There is so much important work
- 4:00that this nonprofit organization is doing.
- 4:03For example, the Wayback Machine is often present in evidence in
- 4:07court cases when that kind of evidence has been erased.
- 4:11So, you know, it is doing like good important work.
- 4:14This organization and they said in this Washington Post article,
- 4:17they have no idea why the hackers did it.
- 4:20It's very likely they just did it to say that they did it.
- 4:24So I guess they'll be investing more heavily in cybersecurity
- 4:27moving forward because they they did say also in this article
- 4:30that they haven't been. Yes, very scary.
- 4:33And I think the Wayback Machine as of like today is back up, but
- 4:38other elements of Internet Archive are still down.
- 4:41All right, the next story that I have is that Ariana Grande has
- 4:44apologized for being the worst celebrity encounter ever named
- 4:49by Elvira. So a clip went viral over the
- 4:52past probably about 24 hours of spooky entertainer Elvira naming
- 4:58Ariana Grande as her worst celebrity encounter.
- 5:01Runs with Periana Mandy. OK, she came and she brought 20
- 5:07guests. She she wanted 2021 tickets.
- 5:10We're like OK and we give her the tickets and she comes
- 5:14backstage and she asked if I could take pictures with all of
- 5:17her friends and relatives she brought.
- 5:20I take a picture with every single one of them.
- 5:22I sign autographs for every single one of them.
- 5:25Then I say to her, can we take a photo together?
- 5:28And she goes Nah, I don't realize their thoughts.
- 5:35I mean, come on. OK.
- 5:37Alvira posted screenshots of an article talking about this to
- 5:41her Instagram, which is kind of crazy, and that prompted Ariana
- 5:45to respond. So Ariana wrote.
- 5:46I'm so disheartened to see this. I actually don't even remember
- 5:49getting the chance to meet you because I had an anxiety attack
- 5:52into my memory left before the rest of my family.
- 5:55This was around seven years ago and at the time I was really not
- 5:58great with being in public crowds or loud places.
- 6:01But if I'm remembering this moment, I sincerely apologize
- 6:03for offending you. Thank you for being so nice to
- 6:05my mom. She told me how lovely you were.
- 6:07She might have had different feelings about that now, but
- 6:10I'll talk to her clearly. We all have our days.
- 6:12Sending love always. You'll always be our queen of
- 6:14Halloween. OK, so I actually just wanted to
- 6:16mention this because I feel like when celebrities call each other
- 6:21out and like I Alvira to Ariana Grande is a very big leap.
- 6:25They're very different scale of celebrity, but still when you
- 6:29know, they still got it was she's famous enough that it got
- 6:32picked up. You know, I think when
- 6:34celebrities call each other out, I think it's just kind of savage
- 6:37or even sometimes I find when like tik tokers make videos
- 6:40about meeting different celebrities in public and stuff,
- 6:43I just don't think that's necessarily appropriate.
- 6:46I don't know. I think, OK, it's one thing if
- 6:50like a celebrity has a really bad experience with Ariana
- 6:52Grande and they tell people in their lives and then it kind of
- 6:57moves around the industry and then Ariana Grande has a
- 6:59reputation in the industry for being difficult or not very nice
- 7:03or whatever. I think, sure, that's fair game.
- 7:05You can talk about it within the industry, within your private
- 7:09life, with people that you know, even if there were colleagues
- 7:12like you can share that information.
- 7:13I think bringing it to the fans, we have no idea what it feels
- 7:20like to be famous and we have no idea what someone might be going
- 7:24through in any given moment. And I think we often are kind of
- 7:27waiting for people to trip up. I think it's like this kind of,
- 7:32it feels like validating or it's like confirmation to us that
- 7:35like these people that have it all, well, they have it all, but
- 7:37like they're assholes. So I think we can as like we as
- 7:40the fans, as the public who don't understand the context of
- 7:43that interaction and what it feels like to be that celebrity,
- 7:47what they could have been going through in that moment,
- 7:49whatever. Like it just leads to bullying.
- 7:53I don't know if that's really the right word, but like just so
- 7:56much like hate directed towards that celebrity.
- 7:59And I just don't think that's fair.
- 8:00I'm surprised that she posted this, that she shared this about
- 8:05Ari. Like, I think it's just kind of
- 8:07shitty. I think it's like I said, fine
- 8:10to do it within your circle, even within the industry, but
- 8:12bringing it to the fans is like taking it to another level.
- 8:16Like it's like to me, it's a step too far.
- 8:18OK. Speaking of Ari, I did want to
- 8:20touch on the Wicked poster being changed.
- 8:23I feel like it is one of the most viral things going on on
- 8:26TikTok right now and we could not avoid it.
- 8:28So a fan on TikTok edited the Wicked poster of Cynthia Rivo
- 8:33and Ariana Grande to look more like the original Playbill.
- 8:36But in doing so they basically covered Cynthia's entire face.
- 8:41So Cynthia saw this and she posted on her Instagram story.
- 8:45She like put a screenshot of it and then she wrote.
- 8:47This is the wildest most offensive thing I have seen.
- 8:50Equal to that awful AI of us fighting.
- 8:53Equal to people posing the question is your pussy green?
- 8:59People have been commenting that on the poster.
- 9:03So like Ariana Grande is whispering.
- 9:05It's like the wicked poster, right?
- 9:06So Ari is whispering to Cynthia and people have been commenting
- 9:11like, is your pussy green? As in, like, that's what Ari is
- 9:13asking Cynthia Revo. So she said.
- 9:15None of this is funny. None of it is cute.
- 9:17It degrades me. It degrades us.
- 9:19The original poster is an illustration.
- 9:21I'm a real life human being who chose to look right down the
- 9:24barrel of the camera to you, the viewer, Because without words,
- 9:27we communicate with our eyes. Our poster is an homage, not an
- 9:30imitation. To edit my face and hide my eyes
- 9:33is to erase me, and that is just deeply hurtful.
- 9:37OK, so there are a lot of mixed opinions on this reaction to the
- 9:42fan edit, but I did want to come at this from the perspective of
- 9:45the celebrity. I think no matter how you feel
- 9:48about Cynthia or this particular situation, I do think we rarely
- 9:52consider how the fan object feels about the concept of fan
- 9:57edits in general. And in this story, she mentions
- 10:00several different like, fan edits and interactions and like
- 10:04ways that fans are, they're engaging with Wicked and like,
- 10:07inside jokes that the fandom is already creating about Wicked,
- 10:10Like she mentions those in this story.
- 10:12So this is obviously something that she has been dealing with.
- 10:15Like she's been, I'm going to assume, struggles, maybe not the
- 10:19right word, but I was going to say like struggling with like
- 10:21the level of fan interaction and fan engagement with Wicked.
- 10:26And Ariana Grande is probably very used to this by now because
- 10:29this is just her reality and it has been for like a decade.
- 10:33But for Cynthia, this might be be a little bit more new.
- 10:36I think usually fan edits are pretty harmless.
- 10:39And I'm sure some celebrities do love seeing like compilations of
- 10:42their performances and you know, things like that.
- 10:45But there are a lot of like really messed up fan edits.
- 10:49And I'm not saying that this is a messed up fan edit.
- 10:51Again, if this is not necessarily about this
- 10:53particular situation, I just think sometimes we need to like
- 10:57zoom out and see the context in which someone is reacting right.
- 11:02So when you think about like some of the fan edits that we
- 11:05see guys like we see like yasified celebrities all the
- 11:09time, like Leighton Meester, Blake Lively, I don't know, just
- 11:12like all of these celebrities constantly Jessica Alba and it's
- 11:16like the original photo and they will just like perfect 365 it
- 11:20and they have like so much more makeup on.
- 11:22They change their hair color, they change their skin tone.
- 11:25Sometimes we'll see songs that are created using a singer's
- 11:30voice with AI, which I can imagine is like super creepy and
- 11:34weird. Brie Larson is a great example.
- 11:36When she was Captain Marvel, there were fan edits changing
- 11:39her breast size, her butt size, adding more glam to her.
- 11:44Like I think more celebrities feel conflicted about fan edits
- 11:47than we realize because they normally don't talk about it and
- 11:50they normally don't voice it. So the person that made the fan
- 11:52edit said while I deleted initially as I felt it was the
- 11:55right thing to do, fan posters have been around for as long as
- 11:58movies have existed. I never meant to cause any harm
- 12:01and the poster is just an homage to the original Broadway poster
- 12:04just like the movies recreation is.
- 12:06Also I will say that Cynthia is valid and having her feelings on
- 12:09the matter and I'm also valid and wanting to keep my version
- 12:12of the poster up as I truly meant no harm with it and just
- 12:15made it as a way to show my love for the original.
- 12:18Both can be true, and Ari was asked about it on the red carpet
- 12:22at the like, Academy Museum Awards or whatever that gala
- 12:27that just happened that like every celebrity went to.
- 12:29You know, I think it's very complicated because I find AI so
- 12:38conflicting and troublesome sometimes, but I think it's just
- 12:42kind of such a massive adjustment period.
- 12:44And this is something that is such a, it's so much bigger than
- 12:47us and the fans are going to have fun and make their edits.
- 12:50But of course, you know I sometimes.
- 12:53It goes too far. I yeah, I think so.
- 12:55And I have so much respect for my sister Cynthia.
- 12:58And I love her so much. And you know, it's, it's just a
- 13:02big adjustment. Period.
- 13:03He was very media trained of hers, very Disney star of her
- 13:06Disney. No, she was Nickelodeon.
- 13:09Whatever. Yeah.
- 13:10So she she didn't clearly didn't really want to give a solid
- 13:14opinion one way or another. And I get that.
- 13:18Like, she doesn't want to piss off the fans.
- 13:20She's been dealing with fan edits for like, her entire
- 13:22career. But she's so close with Cynthia.
- 13:26They are taking this film so seriously.
- 13:29And she probably wants to support, you know, someone that
- 13:32she is like so, so close with and love so much as well.
- 13:36So I think she handled it as best as she could in that
- 13:39moment. All right, guys, that's it for
- 13:41Mini scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 13:43Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
