1:19
Speaker 2: tickets to that a little bit later on in the program.
1:20
Speaker 2: I think I'm going to attach a trivia question to that,
1:23
Speaker 2: but I'm not going to give it away quite yet.
1:25
Speaker 2: I don't need the Google Warriors to get out there
1:26
Speaker 2: right away because it will be a super easy question
1:28
Speaker 2: and Reds fans will get it right away. So I
1:31
Speaker 2: want to make sure that I get that out there,
1:33
Speaker 2: So stay tuned. Coming up in about a half hour
1:35
Speaker 2: or so, we'll look into giving away some tickets to
1:38
Speaker 2: go see the Cincinnati Reds and the Saint Louis Cardinals.
1:41
Speaker 2: Great show that we have coming up for you here
1:42
Speaker 2: in just a moment. We'd like to talk about a
1:45
Speaker 2: lot of different things that here on the program. One
1:46
Speaker 2: of the things that we do every single week on
1:48
Speaker 2: the program, when Dave Allen is doing the show, and
1:50
Speaker 2: even when he's not, we do the please pet of
1:53
Speaker 2: the Week program. That's something we've been doing. I think
1:55
Speaker 2: Day's been doing it since he took over the show,
1:57
Speaker 2: and we have a proud sponsor of that segment that's
2:00
Speaker 2: been going on for a long time. And it's our
2:01
Speaker 2: first guest this morning joining me this morning from Almost
2:03
Speaker 2: having Interiors, Charles Belcher is here. I want to talk
2:05
Speaker 2: a little bit about his business and also his passion
2:09
Speaker 2: for the pat How are you doing this.
2:11
Speaker 3: Morning, Charles morn Dale on, Well, thanks, thanks for.
2:13
Speaker 2: Coming in this morning. I'm really looking forward to our
2:15
Speaker 2: discussion here just a little bit. First of all, if
2:18
Speaker 2: you don't mind introduce yourself a little bit. Where are
2:19
Speaker 2: you from? How long have you been here? That kind
2:21
Speaker 2: of thing.
2:22
Speaker 3: So, Kanall County lifelong resident, born and raised on the
2:25
Speaker 3: West Side, went to Morgantown for college, came back, resettled
2:30
Speaker 3: in South Charleston, been here for forty five years and
2:36
Speaker 3: don't know if over leave or not.
2:37
Speaker 2: Almost Having Interiors a custom window covering specialist, blind shade shutters,
2:41
Speaker 2: motorized window treatments, custom drapery exterior shades, residential and commercial
2:45
Speaker 2: serves Greater Kanall Valley, South Charleston, Charleston, Cross Say in
2:48
Speaker 2: Saint Aumans, nitro Tes Valley area. Located five sixteen D Street,
2:52
Speaker 2: over in South Charleston, open Monday through Friday, starting at
2:55
Speaker 2: eight o'clock. That sound about right. That sounds about right, sir.
2:57
Speaker 2: Let's talk a little bit about the business first, and
2:59
Speaker 2: then I want to get into your passion for helping
3:01
Speaker 2: out with the pets and the Canal Humane Society, because
3:04
Speaker 2: we know that they need help and you do a
3:06
Speaker 2: great job with that. But tell us a little bit
3:08
Speaker 2: about almost having interiors. How did you get started in
3:11
Speaker 2: the business, How did you find your passion. I used
3:13
Speaker 2: to do a show called Business Matters, and I would
3:14
Speaker 2: take first time business owners and bring them in, and
3:17
Speaker 2: I really like, I've owned a couple of businesses and myself,
3:20
Speaker 2: so I'm really interested in what the spark was that,
3:23
Speaker 2: why you decided to be self employed, and why home interiors.
3:26
Speaker 3: So I was born into it. When I came along,
3:28
Speaker 3: Dad was already in the industry. He was making selling draperies, furniture,
3:33
Speaker 3: delivering it and installing it. So I got to ride
3:36
Speaker 3: along a lot of the time and see at firsthand
3:39
Speaker 3: what it involved in how to deal with people, how
3:44
Speaker 3: to do what he did. And I really chafed at
3:47
Speaker 3: it for a long time because it was kind of
3:49
Speaker 3: forced upon me, But later on in life I realized
3:53
Speaker 3: that I had a little bit of a talent for it,
3:57
Speaker 3: so I leaned into it, and it's off pretty well.
4:06
Speaker 3: I don't know if you've ever worked in a family
4:07
Speaker 3: business or not. When it's good, it can be really good,
4:11
Speaker 3: and when it's bad, it can be really bad.
4:14
Speaker 2: I owned one for a while, so yeah, I know
4:15
Speaker 2: what you're kind of what you're talking about for sure. Yeah.
4:17
Speaker 3: So it was in the business in the summer times
4:20
Speaker 3: and after school once I was riding around with him
4:22
Speaker 3: and doing the things, and went to college, got away
4:25
Speaker 3: from it for a while, and then fell back into it.
4:28
Speaker 3: And twenty fourteen I was working with him and realized
4:32
Speaker 3: that we needed to separate and be father and son
4:35
Speaker 3: instead of employee and employers. So it was a week
4:38
Speaker 3: before Christmas. I called my wife and I said, yeah,
4:41
Speaker 3: I quit today, and she's like, you did.
4:43
Speaker 4: What?
4:45
Speaker 3: Like, Yeah, I'm gonna go home and take him out
4:47
Speaker 3: to think, And so I did, and realized that that
4:52
Speaker 3: was probably what I was best at, was, you know,
4:54
Speaker 3: customer service making, buying and selling these products. So I
5:00
Speaker 3: got my business license, I got my contractor's license, I
5:03
Speaker 3: bought a secondhand van and I got after it.
5:05
Speaker 2: I love it, man, because every story starts about along
5:07
Speaker 2: those lines, and then you know, you have your first van,
5:09
Speaker 2: and then you get a newer van, and then you
5:11
Speaker 2: have old equipment, you get newer equipment. I mean, I
5:13
Speaker 2: mean the evolution feels great when it's yours, you know,
5:15
Speaker 2: when it's yours. And then then you get to take
5:17
Speaker 2: your passion for serving customers and clients on something that
5:20
Speaker 2: you're very good at and sharing that. I mean, frankly,
5:23
Speaker 2: it's a little bit of joy when you're talking about
5:25
Speaker 2: doing something you like as a living. You know, you
5:26
Speaker 2: get to share that with your customers. That's a great thing.
5:29
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, and it's nice to give people a sense
5:32
Speaker 3: of comfort and bring their ideas to the table, mix
5:37
Speaker 3: them with your own, and then return a finished product
5:40
Speaker 3: to them and see them light up and be pleased
5:43
Speaker 3: with what you've done for them.
5:44
Speaker 2: Let's talk about that for just a second, because I'm
5:47
Speaker 2: nowhere near an expert in this space, so I'll take
5:50
Speaker 2: my own small slice of experience that I have. I
5:53
Speaker 2: don't have any professional experience, but just simply changing my
5:56
Speaker 2: interior blinds from like the first thing that you by,
6:00
Speaker 2: you know, like the cheapest things that you can get
6:01
Speaker 2: on the interior, and then you actually take some time
6:03
Speaker 2: and you go to a store that even if you
6:05
Speaker 2: don't install them yourself, you get them custom cut. You
6:08
Speaker 2: get a nicer shade with better mechanics and things involved
6:12
Speaker 2: in it. I did this and I installed it myself.
6:13
Speaker 2: I had them cut at the store and I put
6:15
Speaker 2: them in. But the upgrade just in the window coverings,
6:18
Speaker 2: the quality of the way that it shuts out the light,
6:22
Speaker 2: how easy it is to open them and to shut
6:25
Speaker 2: That sounds so strange, but if you're used to to
6:28
Speaker 2: dealing with the cheaper ones, when you put something in
6:30
Speaker 2: that's actually nice, and I would assume custom made is
6:32
Speaker 2: even better, you're really elevating your experience. And really it's
6:37
Speaker 2: a quality of life thing, because if you're I mean,
6:39
Speaker 2: even if it's something like watching a movie or something
6:41
Speaker 2: along those lines, you want to make sure that your
6:42
Speaker 2: window coverings, that everything is copaseetic to how you want it.
6:46
Speaker 2: In your house.
6:47
Speaker 5: Sure, I mean, this is your home or this is
6:48
Speaker 5: your office.
6:49
Speaker 3: You want to feel at home and comfortable there, and
6:53
Speaker 3: blocking out ambient light does so much for helping you sleep,
6:56
Speaker 3: you know, and watching your television and just helping you
6:59
Speaker 3: to feel securious that nobody's looking in your windows and
7:01
Speaker 3: you know, seeing what you're doing. So that's what we
7:04
Speaker 3: offer to people. You know, you could do it with
7:06
Speaker 3: a bedsheet or you know, some cheap vinyl blinds, but
7:10
Speaker 3: say it's your home, if you're going to spend money
7:11
Speaker 3: on it, you ought to make it look nice and
7:12
Speaker 3: make it feel, you know, like it's yours. It's individual,
7:16
Speaker 3: and that's what we offer people. So somebody says, I
7:19
Speaker 3: want wood tone or I want you know, this color,
7:21
Speaker 3: this pattern, then that's what we facilitate. And there are
7:24
Speaker 3: so many options. We think that we bring our expertise
7:28
Speaker 3: in finding that one thing that somebody is looking for,
7:31
Speaker 3: those things that somebody's looking for to life.
7:35
Speaker 2: I think that there might be a little bit of
7:36
Speaker 2: a misconception too, when you're talking about something like what
7:39
Speaker 2: you do, that maybe it's for only the big, fancy
7:41
Speaker 2: homes or something along those lines. What's your typical client
7:43
Speaker 2: look like. I'm assuming that it's probably a lot like everybody.
7:47
Speaker 3: Right, we serve just about anybody that'll call for us.
7:51
Speaker 3: I mean, whether you have an apartment, a duplex, a
7:56
Speaker 3: starter home, a very nice home and office and office building.
8:00
Speaker 3: We work for school systems, we worked for hospital systems.
8:03
Speaker 3: We worked for state and federal government. So anytime a
8:07
Speaker 3: call or an email or a message comes in, I
8:09
Speaker 3: try and figure out what does that person want and
8:11
Speaker 3: how can I help them. Our work is in a
8:14
Speaker 3: state capitol complex. We have decorated the Governor's mansion under
8:18
Speaker 3: different administrations. We've done the West Virginia University and the
8:22
Speaker 3: Marshall University's President's house, the student union over at West
8:26
Speaker 3: Virginia State, which is where I graduated from. The FBI
8:29
Speaker 3: Center up in Clarksburg. We did eight hundred windows up
8:31
Speaker 3: there a year or so ago. I mean, it's a
8:33
Speaker 3: huge project for us, and we took it on and
8:36
Speaker 3: did it and it was great. Our work is at
8:38
Speaker 3: the Greenbrier and dozens of houses there. We've gone to Pinehurst,
8:42
Speaker 3: We've gone to Isle up Palm, South Carolina, to Jupiter, Florida.
8:47
Speaker 3: I mean, we went to Chicago for a lady a
8:49
Speaker 3: couple of years ago, and that was a bit of
8:51
Speaker 3: an outlier. She was from here and moved to Chicago,
8:54
Speaker 3: and she had a situation where she just didn't know
8:56
Speaker 3: how she was going to get some furniture to her
8:58
Speaker 3: new place in Chicago, and I was like, well, why
9:00
Speaker 3: don't you just let us help you. We love a
9:02
Speaker 3: road trip, you know, and we got some strong backs,
9:04
Speaker 3: so send us and she was like, yeah, sounds like
9:07
Speaker 3: a good idea.
9:07
Speaker 5: So we went.
9:08
Speaker 2: You're listening to five eighty Live this morning show. Us
9:11
Speaker 2: brought you a part. Brought you in part by a
9:13
Speaker 2: Guarantee Bank. They are the sponsor of the phone lines
9:15
Speaker 2: turning the Taylor text line. Threes are four, nine, three, five,
9:17
Speaker 2: five years or eight? Is the text line? What's your
9:20
Speaker 2: favorite part of the job do you have like a
9:22
Speaker 2: do you like the big reveal moment, like when you
9:24
Speaker 2: put things together like a rehabilitation. What is to the
9:27
Speaker 2: thing that you like the most? Yeah?
9:28
Speaker 3: I love it when the client comes in and sees
9:30
Speaker 3: what we've done and they're like, yes, that's that's what
9:32
Speaker 3: we were looking for. But it's a long process and
9:36
Speaker 3: it's kind of like solving a puzzle. I mean you
9:39
Speaker 3: come into it and you're like, what does this person want?
9:41
Speaker 3: What can I do for them? And they lay it
9:44
Speaker 3: out for me and I have to start rattling around
9:47
Speaker 3: in my head like how how can I do this?
9:49
Speaker 3: What do I have to get? Who do I have
9:50
Speaker 3: to reach out to. So every job is different, you know,
9:55
Speaker 3: whether they want one blind, ten blinds, pair of draperies,
9:58
Speaker 3: some shutters, piece of furniture being reupholstered. I have to
10:01
Speaker 3: get stuff. I have to call these people, email these
10:05
Speaker 3: other people. And it's tough at times. You know, things
10:09
Speaker 3: go out of stock, people quit working, or the situation
10:14
Speaker 3: is constantly in flux, and you have to adapt to that.
10:16
Speaker 2: As a business owner. That's like one of the most
10:18
Speaker 2: difficult things. There's no doubt that just sometimes you don't know.
10:23
Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's figuring it out, stumbling through it and
10:26
Speaker 3: getting to the finish line. So what I really really
10:29
Speaker 3: enjoy is when everything's done and you can step back,
10:33
Speaker 3: you can put the tools away, You can call the
10:35
Speaker 3: client and say all right, here it is. What do
10:38
Speaker 3: you think and they're like, yes, that's it, thank you
10:42
Speaker 3: so very much. And I can finally breathe after months
10:46
Speaker 3: or weeks of stressing over this and say, all right,
10:51
Speaker 3: let's put the tools away, let's get in the vam,
10:53
Speaker 3: let's go home.
10:54
Speaker 2: That's good. That's a good feeling, a really good time,
10:56
Speaker 2: and everybody's happy in that regard. If folks are interesting
11:00
Speaker 2: and they want to get an estimate, talk to you
11:02
Speaker 2: about what maybe some of the options are, because you
11:06
Speaker 2: can help with that too. Right If people is like, look,
11:08
Speaker 2: I know I need to do something, what's my options
11:09
Speaker 2: for this? They can call you for that kind of
11:11
Speaker 2: consultation and take a look at those things. How can
11:13
Speaker 2: folks get ahold of you?
11:14
Speaker 3: So we're in the same place that we've been in
11:15
Speaker 3: for fifty years. We're on d Street in South Charleston.
11:19
Speaker 3: We're a block from the Mound, across from Chase Bank
11:21
Speaker 3: and the first Baptist Church at South Charleston. You can't
11:24
Speaker 3: miss us. They can call us at three oh four
11:27
Speaker 3: seven four four seven oh nine seven. We have a
11:29
Speaker 3: Facebook page. Search for Almost Heaven Interiors. Almost Heaven Interiors
11:35
Speaker 3: at yahoo dot com. I do get overwhelmed, so I'll
11:38
Speaker 3: apologize to somebody calls or emails and I don't get
11:40
Speaker 3: back to you right away, send me a second request.
11:44
Speaker 1: I promise I'm not ignoring anybody purposefully.
11:47
Speaker 2: That's the other thing small business owners, you don't have
11:48
Speaker 2: a staff of people that are constantly checking your emails
11:50
Speaker 2: and stuff all the time. You got to just get
11:52
Speaker 2: to them when you can. Man's the way it goes.
11:54
Speaker 2: Charles Belcher is joining me this morning, owner of Almost
11:56
Speaker 2: Heaven Interior Designs, wrapping up the conversation, but I want
11:59
Speaker 2: to talk a little bit about Petal Week, which is
12:01
Speaker 2: Charles has been a longtime sponsor of over on five
12:03
Speaker 2: E d w CCHS. It's a program that Dave Allen
12:05
Speaker 2: has ran out of there for years now and helping
12:08
Speaker 2: the Canal Humane Society and adopting out their dogs and
12:11
Speaker 2: pet dogs and cats and I'm assuming, you know, maybe
12:13
Speaker 2: peacocks and chickens. I don't know what they have over there,
12:15
Speaker 2: but trying to help out out every week. And that's
12:18
Speaker 2: something that Charles is passionate about. What what's your personal
12:20
Speaker 2: connection to that got you interested in being a sponsor
12:23
Speaker 2: for something like that.
12:25
Speaker 3: So one of my first memories was we had a
12:27
Speaker 3: sheep dog when I was coming up, and I'll just
12:31
Speaker 3: remember enjoying having him around. We had a couple of
12:33
Speaker 3: Boston Terriers when I was a young child and loved
12:36
Speaker 3: going home from school and hanging out with them, sharing
12:39
Speaker 3: a snack with them, and going swimming with these dogs
12:41
Speaker 3: and stuff. I rescued a dog when I was at
12:44
Speaker 3: work one day I would go out to the van.
12:46
Speaker 3: This dog was just hanging around, danced around, want a
12:48
Speaker 3: petted wagony's tails, happy dog.
12:51
Speaker 5: Okay.
12:51
Speaker 3: I went to leave that day and got out to
12:53
Speaker 3: the end of the street and the dog was on
12:54
Speaker 3: the corner and he saw me start dancing wagon's tail
12:57
Speaker 3: and stuff and talked to him and he was like, you
12:59
Speaker 3: want to you wanna go for a ride?
13:00
Speaker 6: Man?
13:00
Speaker 2: Like you got a home?
13:01
Speaker 3: And I opened the door.
13:02
Speaker 2: He jumped in.
13:03
Speaker 3: He had a caller, a tag, name and everything, phone number,
13:06
Speaker 3: and I called his people and they were like, well,
13:09
Speaker 3: you just put him outside, it's any home. Well I
13:12
Speaker 3: was twenty miles from where they lived, and I'm like,
13:14
Speaker 3: I'm not putting your dog outside.
13:16
Speaker 2: So I held on to him.
13:17
Speaker 3: I waited for signs, you know, a call to shelter,
13:20
Speaker 3: asked if anybody you know reporting missing. Never did, and
13:23
Speaker 3: I kept that dog for like ten years or so.
13:25
Speaker 3: So I had one. A family member brought me another
13:28
Speaker 3: one that was dropped off at a family member of
13:30
Speaker 3: his house. I had two, and then I adopted one
13:32
Speaker 3: from a rescue lady at Walmart. I had three. The
13:36
Speaker 3: fourth one let itself in the house one day on me.
13:38
Speaker 3: So after over three or four years, I end up
13:41
Speaker 3: with a pack of four dogs. I'm now in my fifth,
13:46
Speaker 3: sixth and seventh rescue dogs and a cat. I have
13:50
Speaker 3: a graduate.
13:50
Speaker 2: You about to take it and took the ride. This
13:52
Speaker 2: your This is a true passion of yours.
13:54
Speaker 3: I went in eyeballs deep on this one and I
13:57
Speaker 3: love him. You know, I wouldn't trade him for anything.
13:59
Speaker 3: I will fight you over them. There is nothing better
14:02
Speaker 3: than going home and having a sixty pounds for a
14:04
Speaker 3: missile put its paws up on your chest, you know,
14:07
Speaker 3: pooping you on the nose, and you know, giving you
14:09
Speaker 3: kisses and stuff.
14:09
Speaker 5: It's just it's it's great. I love it.
14:12
Speaker 7: Oh.
14:12
Speaker 2: What as far as getting involved just from sort of
14:16
Speaker 2: a galaxy brain aspect and a local business getting involved
14:19
Speaker 2: in this sort of initiative, do you feel that's sort
14:22
Speaker 2: of your way of not sally like, letting the community
14:26
Speaker 2: know that you're there with them supporting. Yeah.
14:29
Speaker 3: I mean we all have a responsibility to make our
14:32
Speaker 3: communities better, and I feel like I'm doing what I
14:35
Speaker 3: am capable of doing. We are a small business, we
14:38
Speaker 3: don't have a tremendous amount of resources and such, but
14:41
Speaker 3: advocacy is one thing that you know, I can offer
14:43
Speaker 3: at a pretty low cost. And you know, as you say,
14:46
Speaker 3: this is something I feel deeply about, I'm passionate about,
14:49
Speaker 3: so I'm more than happy to do so. I love
14:51
Speaker 3: having my name associated with animals that need homes and
14:54
Speaker 3: trying to help find them homes. You know, I'll do
14:56
Speaker 3: that seven days a week, twenty four hours a day.
14:59
Speaker 2: So that's great information, Charles, and I really, I really
15:02
Speaker 2: appreciate your passion on this because you can really feel
15:04
Speaker 2: it as it comes through for the Adopt Me pleas
15:06
Speaker 2: pet of the Week. Similar to your story where you're
15:09
Speaker 2: talking about talking about sort of having your own army
15:13
Speaker 2: of rescue animals. My mom when I was growing up,
15:16
Speaker 2: we didn't have a lot of a room where we
15:19
Speaker 2: were growing up at, but they're in St. Albans. The
15:21
Speaker 2: area where we were was relatively tucked away and nestled
15:24
Speaker 2: in the valley up there and tons of neighborhood dogs
15:27
Speaker 2: that were strays that were starving and you know, would
15:29
Speaker 2: be not in very good shape. My mom got into
15:32
Speaker 2: the point where she would feed all of these these
15:34
Speaker 2: dogs in the neighbor We couldn't house them, but we
15:36
Speaker 2: fed all the dogs in the neighborhood, tried to sort
15:38
Speaker 2: of take care of them and things like that. They
15:40
Speaker 2: were so loyal to her, and this was both a
15:42
Speaker 2: curse anna and a blessing. They were so loyal to her.
15:44
Speaker 2: They waited for her to come home, So there would
15:45
Speaker 2: be eight to ten dogs outside of our house waiting
15:48
Speaker 2: for her to come home every night. But also this
15:50
Speaker 2: was the worst part. They would chase her car every
15:53
Speaker 2: morning on the way to work because they were missing her.
15:56
Speaker 2: They wanted And that was the part that as a
15:58
Speaker 2: kid always scared me. I love the dogs, didn't mind
16:00
Speaker 2: anything about it, but they would go down there, you know,
16:02
Speaker 2: run down Cole River Road. But don't do that. Don't
16:05
Speaker 2: do that. Nothing ever happened. Luckily, it wasn't a thing,
16:07
Speaker 2: but I was always I felt bad for those dogs,
16:09
Speaker 2: and I know that that wasn't the absolute best that
16:12
Speaker 2: they could have, you know, but we did our best
16:14
Speaker 2: in trying to help there and to help both those dogs.
16:16
Speaker 2: And we've always been, you know, kind of a dog family,
16:19
Speaker 2: so that was that was something that early on, it
16:21
Speaker 2: was like, you know, you got to take care of
16:22
Speaker 2: these animals, even if there's nowhere for them to go.
16:24
Speaker 2: You can't just sit there and watch them starve. And
16:26
Speaker 2: so this is obviously not that, but it's along the
16:28
Speaker 2: same vein. We got to help our animals out.
16:30
Speaker 5: Absolutely.
16:32
Speaker 3: One of my core principles is do something good for
16:36
Speaker 3: someone that can't do anything back for you, Okay, and
16:39
Speaker 3: these animals really can't do a whole lot for us
16:42
Speaker 3: other than offer us protection, companionship, and that's all I
16:46
Speaker 3: ask for. You know, I will take their love, their affection,
16:51
Speaker 3: and I will pour it back forward, you know, to
16:53
Speaker 3: any of the others that need that that need a home,
16:56
Speaker 3: that need food, need water, or in a bad situation.
16:59
Speaker 3: You know, I will absolutely lend my voice to make
17:04
Speaker 3: sure that a pet gets a safe, warm, loving home.
17:07
Speaker 2: Well, so there you have it. You know why that
17:09
Speaker 2: almost having an interior Charles Belcher sponsors the Please Pet
17:13
Speaker 2: of the Week, Big adoption event coming. I don't want
17:15
Speaker 2: to forget about this. There's a big adoption event that's
17:16
Speaker 2: going to take place tomorrow at the Humane Society. There
17:20
Speaker 2: is going to be a discounts, there's going to be
17:23
Speaker 2: ways free to get into the animals that you got
17:25
Speaker 2: to show up at that thing if you if you're
17:26
Speaker 2: interested in getting and you want to help our animals
17:29
Speaker 2: and the Humane Society in the area. A big event
17:31
Speaker 2: that's going to happen on the thirty, if that's tomorrow
17:33
Speaker 2: at the Canal Humane Society. You need to check that
17:35
Speaker 2: stuff out because that's a big event that's going to
17:36
Speaker 2: take place tomorrow.
17:37
Speaker 3: Yeah, please love for everybody to go up, spend some time,
17:41
Speaker 3: consider fostering, consider adopting. You know, let's let's empty the shelters. Man,
17:46
Speaker 3: let's ease the burden on these folks that are trying
17:48
Speaker 3: to do well by these pets that don't have homes,
17:50
Speaker 3: because when the shelters are overburdened, it's a it's a
17:53
Speaker 3: tremendous burden on the people that are trying to take
17:55
Speaker 3: care of these animals and you know, give them basic care, food,
18:00
Speaker 3: clean them up, and find them a home. So let's
18:02
Speaker 3: try and make their job easier. And please everybody remember
18:06
Speaker 3: spay a newd or your pets, get a microchip, put
18:08
Speaker 3: tags on them, get them a custom embroidered caller with
18:12
Speaker 3: their name and the phone number on them so if
18:14
Speaker 3: they do get out, you know, they have a chance
18:16
Speaker 3: to get back home. They're not just out there making
18:19
Speaker 3: more homeless puppies and kittens out there. Please call your
18:22
Speaker 3: shelter donate, ask what their needs are. Fix Charleston. You know,

23:40
Speaker 2: into the studio now. Bill Coyle is joining me and
23:44
Speaker 2: he is part of the event that's taking place at
23:47
Speaker 2: Saint Baldric's, the eleventh annual headshaving event that's coming up
23:52
Speaker 2: and Bill, good morning, how you doing this morning? Doing well?
23:54
Speaker 2: Thank you? Tell me a little bit about the event
23:57
Speaker 2: that's coming up here. This is something of course, that's
24:00
Speaker 2: that eleventh Aniel, I didn't realize it's been going on.
24:02
Speaker 2: I mean, what are we talking? There is twenty fifteen? Then?
24:04
Speaker 2: Is that was that the first year of it?
24:06
Speaker 5: Twenty sixteen.
24:08
Speaker 2: I always get that odd year and they're always throws
24:10
Speaker 2: me off a little bit. But except the state's just
24:13
Speaker 2: a little bit for this. First of all, what is
24:15
Speaker 2: Think Baldricks Foundation.
24:17
Speaker 12: Saint Baldrick's is the largest private source of childhood cancer
24:24
Speaker 12: grant funding in the country. In twenty years, since they've
24:29
Speaker 12: been a five and one three see, they have funded
24:32
Speaker 12: three hundred and seventy million dollars in grants that support
24:37
Speaker 12: research across the country. Work very closely with the Children's
24:41
Speaker 12: on Cology Group to fund clinical trials, the fund training
24:46
Speaker 12: for researchers, fellowships for childhood cancer and colleges. So it's
24:53
Speaker 12: the largest in the country and it's primarily volunteer based
24:56
Speaker 12: where they have the head shaving events and they're starting
24:59
Speaker 12: to grow outside of that to have other events, but
25:03
Speaker 12: most of the fundraising is done volunteer so that most
25:07
Speaker 12: of the money raise can go directly to research.
25:09
Speaker 2: And these direct charity events that help out organizations like
25:14
Speaker 2: Saint Patrick are so important because what they're funding is
25:17
Speaker 2: like the top of the line research, the stuff that
25:20
Speaker 2: trickles down to your individual hospitals and your community hospitals
25:23
Speaker 2: and your cancer treatment centers and stuff like that. We're
25:26
Speaker 2: really helping to fund the medical procedures and the things
25:29
Speaker 2: that are helping with the children that have cancer, and
25:32
Speaker 2: that's such an important investment to make into trying to
25:34
Speaker 2: find cures and treatments and different things like that.
25:36
Speaker 12: But I like the word you said, investment. Yes, absolutely
25:39
Speaker 12: exactly what it is. And you also talked about treatment
25:42
Speaker 12: because one of the things with childhood cancer is since
25:47
Speaker 12: I've been involved, the statistics have gone that the survival
25:52
Speaker 12: rate was about eighty percent, it's about eighty four eighty
25:56
Speaker 12: five percent, But the same number of kids are dying
25:59
Speaker 12: because there's been better diagnostic techniques, the environment may be
26:03
Speaker 12: causing more kids. More kids are getting diagnosed in about
26:08
Speaker 12: ninety percent of the kids who have childhood cancer have
26:12
Speaker 12: some sort of lifelong malady from the treatment, primarily because
26:17
Speaker 12: chemo's poisoned. So it's it's for people who are out
26:21
Speaker 12: there saying, well, we're never gonna have a cure for cancer.
26:23
Speaker 5: We're trying to improve the treatments as.
26:26
Speaker 2: Well, and that's we try to do what we can
26:29
Speaker 2: at this station to help with different causes. But the
26:32
Speaker 2: thing that always gets me whenever we're dealing with children
26:34
Speaker 2: and children that are sick, whether it be from cancer
26:36
Speaker 2: or whatever it might be, that's the thing that my
26:38
Speaker 2: daughter's eight now, and although it was always important to
26:42
Speaker 2: me up until that point. The last decade, it's even
26:44
Speaker 2: been more. You know when every time I see her
26:46
Speaker 2: and I think I'm lucky so far, you know that
26:48
Speaker 2: she's healthy and everything, but it's not always the case,
26:50
Speaker 2: you know, And so we need to help the kids
26:53
Speaker 2: that are out there. And let's talk to just a
26:55
Speaker 2: little bit, just a moment about do you have a
26:57
Speaker 2: personal connection. Is there something that really got you involved
26:59
Speaker 2: in this?
27:00
Speaker 12: On September twenty five, nineteen ninety, I heard the words
27:04
Speaker 12: no parents should have here. Your child has cancer. Just
27:07
Speaker 12: like you said you were, I didn't worry about it.
27:09
Speaker 12: I never thought it was going to happen. That's why
27:11
Speaker 12: when you asked about the eleventh and what year I
27:15
Speaker 12: could do the.
27:15
Speaker 2: Math, I understood, yeah, you know that date, right.
27:18
Speaker 12: Yeah, And so I just worked from that day forward.
27:22
Speaker 12: But so, he was in a clinical trial that reduced
27:27
Speaker 12: his treatment the protocol from eighteen months six months of
27:32
Speaker 12: aggressive chemo twelve months of prophylactic He had Burkis lymphoma,
27:37
Speaker 12: was a very aggressive form of cancer, and it was
27:39
Speaker 12: treated very aggressively with chemo, and his treatment was reduced
27:43
Speaker 12: down to six or eight weeks because he was on
27:48
Speaker 12: a clinical trial and That's why my involvement is will
27:51
Speaker 12: on the research arm A fund finding raising the awareness
27:56
Speaker 12: for the need for research as well as helping to
28:00
Speaker 12: raise the money.
28:01
Speaker 2: I don't want to spend I'm not an extro on this,
28:03
Speaker 2: so I don't want to spend a ton of time
28:04
Speaker 2: on it. But from my understanding and just my lay
28:07
Speaker 2: research and some things that I follow, we're making progress
28:12
Speaker 2: on this battle. We're making some progress on the battle
28:14
Speaker 2: against against cancers.
28:16
Speaker 12: I think we're making progress. Certain we're making progress and
28:20
Speaker 12: improved treatment. Yes, you moved more from chemotherapy to immunit therapy.
28:24
Speaker 12: There's concepts, there's drivers that are taking Yeah, we're going
28:28
Speaker 12: in the right direction.
28:29
Speaker 2: Yeah.
28:29
Speaker 5: Yeah, and those of us who have been touched, it's
28:31
Speaker 5: not fast enough.
28:32
Speaker 2: Yeah.
28:32
Speaker 5: For those of us who have not been touched, maybe
28:34
Speaker 5: it is.
28:35
Speaker 2: Yeah. And I can tell already that that's kind of
28:37
Speaker 2: your driving position on this thing. Let's let's talk a
28:40
Speaker 2: little bit about the event. What does the head shaving
28:41
Speaker 2: event look like? And let's talk about how you can
28:43
Speaker 2: get involved because this is a fundraising event.
28:46
Speaker 5: It is a fundraising event.
28:47
Speaker 12: So the event takes place at six o'clock on Thursday,
28:52
Speaker 12: May fourteenth, at tops Off. Tops Off has been a
28:55
Speaker 12: great supporter from day one on. Their barbers provide do
29:00
Speaker 12: the shaving because you have to be a license barber
29:03
Speaker 12: to do the shave.
29:04
Speaker 5: So we get.
29:05
Speaker 12: Together at six o'clock and people volunteers show up shave
29:12
Speaker 12: their head and ask their friends, their networks, their coworkers,
29:15
Speaker 12: whoever you.
29:15
Speaker 5: Can ask for for money to support the costs.
29:19
Speaker 12: And the idea with the head shaving is to also
29:23
Speaker 12: help raise awareness so that when you show up for
29:26
Speaker 12: work next day or show up at the gym the
29:28
Speaker 12: next day, people to ask you the question what happened
29:31
Speaker 12: and then you can share that story. And it's to
29:35
Speaker 12: also then show solidarity with the kids who don't do
29:39
Speaker 12: this voluntarily. The way to find out more about the
29:43
Speaker 12: event to sign up. We do a good job of
29:47
Speaker 12: getting people to donate. We need more people to shave
29:51
Speaker 12: just to grow the network, to have more people involved
29:54
Speaker 12: because it also help the raise awareness. Is you just
29:58
Speaker 12: google sat Baldrics or whatever search engine you use, look
30:03
Speaker 12: up save Baldricks and then put the downtown Charles to
30:06
Speaker 12: zip code two five three one in there in or
30:10
Speaker 12: there'll be all the participants, but the event will also
30:14
Speaker 12: be there.
30:15
Speaker 2: I'll tell you what, I'm a shave. I'm saving that
30:17
Speaker 2: to the WHS Facebook page now, so if you need
30:20
Speaker 2: to find it and you're having a hard time or anything,
30:23
Speaker 2: you can just go over to our Facebook page on
30:25
Speaker 2: WHS and I'll have that up over there so you
30:27
Speaker 2: can find it there.
30:27
Speaker 5: Thank you.
30:28
Speaker 2: Now that that's probably the best way to go about it.
30:30
Speaker 2: So you do have to pre register for the shaving.
30:35
Speaker 5: It's preferred, but not necessary.
30:37
Speaker 2: Of course, you'll you'll take if somebody can.
30:40
Speaker 12: Take anybody whom to shave their head and brings a
30:43
Speaker 12: check butt.
30:43
Speaker 2: And then as far as as sponsors for it, there's
30:46
Speaker 2: no minimum or anything for that. If you can afford
30:48
Speaker 2: to sponsor somebody who's going to shave their head, just
30:50
Speaker 2: just do it.
30:51
Speaker 12: Just make the donation and you can do that. The
30:53
Speaker 12: same link says donate and you can donate to the event.
30:57
Speaker 12: You can donate to an individual on the event.
31:00
Speaker 2: Very good, Very good. That's that's coming up. The event's
31:03
Speaker 2: going to take place on May fourteen, so you have
31:05
Speaker 2: some time to get ready for this thing. It's gonna
31:06
Speaker 2: be at six o'clock at tops Off Barbershop and kind
31:10
Speaker 2: of give out your your Gmail address, Yes, except okay.
31:13
Speaker 2: If you have questions outside of just mail to find
31:15
Speaker 2: it on Facebook. If there's anything else you want to do,
31:17
Speaker 2: or maybe you have a large grant that you want
31:20
Speaker 2: to give or something along those lines. You know, those
31:21
Speaker 2: things are always welcome. You can get a hold of Bill.
31:24
Speaker 2: It's Bill, It's Coil Coil okay, so c O Y
31:27
Speaker 2: L E. Bill Coyle fifty eight at gmail dot com.
31:30
Speaker 2: Bill Coil fifty eight at gmail dot com. If you
31:33
Speaker 2: have any additional questions. As far as that goes, this
31:35
Speaker 2: is a this is an outstanding event to help with
31:38
Speaker 2: kids that are suffering from suffering from cancer, maybe a
31:43
Speaker 2: future child that could be suffering and needs treatment, maybe
31:46
Speaker 2: a potential cure somewhere down the line. But this funding
31:49
Speaker 2: helps and we need it so much.
31:51
Speaker 5: And that's that's the key, it's the future.
31:53
Speaker 12: Statistically, one in three hundred kids under the age of
31:56
Speaker 12: twenty will be diagnosed with cancer. So when I talk
31:59
Speaker 12: to people to say, why don't know anybody who's been
32:03
Speaker 12: impacted by childhood cancer, my answer is, yeah, you do,
32:06
Speaker 12: you just don't know it.
32:07
Speaker 2: You don't know who, which, Yeah, that sounds absolutely true.
32:10
Speaker 2: So once again, that's going to be the eleventh annual
32:12
Speaker 2: headchatings for Saint Baldricks to benefit children with childhood cancers,
32:17
Speaker 2: and that is going to be on May fourteenth at
32:18
Speaker 2: six o'clock tops Off Barbershop. If you want more information,
32:21
Speaker 2: you can find that online by just searching for Saint
32:24
Speaker 2: Baldricks and you can put in the Charleston zip code.
32:26
Speaker 2: You can also go to the five ADWHS Facebook page
32:28
Speaker 2: and I'll have information up over there on that so
32:30
Speaker 2: you can check it out as easily as you possibly can. Bill,
32:33
Speaker 2: Thank you so much for your time day. This is
32:35
Speaker 2: a massively important event that we do for fun, that
32:38
Speaker 2: you do for fundraising, and thank you for doing it.
32:40
Speaker 12: You correct first time when we do it. I can't
32:42
Speaker 12: do this by myself. I need help.
32:44
Speaker 2: Well, thank you for what you do. We really appreciate it.
32:46
Speaker 2: So that's Bill Coyle. If you need any more information,
32:49
Speaker 2: please give him a call. You can always get a
32:50

32:56
Speaker 2: take a break. When we come back, we're going to
32:57
Speaker 2: give away some tickets to see the Cincinnati Reds. If
33:00
Speaker 2: you want to get involved with that, get ready. What
33:02
Speaker 2: I want to know is this is what you'll have
33:04
Speaker 2: to answer, and you can get in Q when you
33:06
Speaker 2: come back. If you have anything else you want to
33:07
Speaker 2: talk about as well, welcome to hang on the line
33:10
Speaker 2: and chat with me for a few minutes. But for
33:13
Speaker 2: Cincinnati Reds tickets to go see the Saint Louis Cardinals
33:15

33:18

33:20
Speaker 2: the Reds number one all time hit leader is. That
33:23
Speaker 2: would be one Pete Rose. He's not only the all
33:25
Speaker 2: time hit leader, but he's the Reds teamed hit leader
33:28
Speaker 2: as well. Who's number two? Who's number two? Who is
33:31
Speaker 2: the second all time leading base hit getter hit leader
33:36
Speaker 2: for the Cincinnati Reds. Give me a call three zer

Speaker 2: trivia question for Cincinnati Reds tickets just before the break,
36:50
Speaker 2: and that question was who is number two all time
36:54
Speaker 2: hits for the Cincinnati Reds. Who is number two? And
36:59
Speaker 2: we have Mike who's called in from Charleston. Who has
37:01
Speaker 2: his guest for the answer to that question. Mike, good morning,
37:03
Speaker 2: How you doing this morning? Pretty good? Inn show, not
37:06
Speaker 2: too bad. I can't complain, are you a Reds fan,
37:08
Speaker 2: Mike Hard, me too, Man, me too tough. Kind of
37:13
Speaker 2: a tough loss last night, but they've been playing so
37:15
Speaker 2: well that I think he inspect one of those every
37:17
Speaker 2: once in a while. I suppose he'll bounce back today.
37:20
Speaker 2: I agree. That will be over on fourteen ninety WSWW.
37:23
Speaker 2: By the way, for those of you that listens to
37:25
Speaker 2: afternoon Reds games, we'll have it over there on our
37:27
Speaker 2: sister station. Okay, so we all know that Pete Rose
37:29
Speaker 2: is number one in for of the Reds and all
37:33
Speaker 2: time hits. Mike who is number two? Barry Larkin? Ding
37:37
Speaker 2: Ding Ding, Mike, you got it right, Barry Larkin. Pete
37:39
Speaker 2: Rose has thirty three hundred and fifty eight hits as
37:41
Speaker 2: a Cincinnati read Barry Larkin twenty three hundred and forty.
37:44
Speaker 2: Dave Cacepcion is just behind Larkin at twenty three, twenty three,
37:48
Speaker 2: twenty six. Joey Votto, who just retired. He retired in
37:53
Speaker 2: the top one, two three, number five all time Joey
37:57
Speaker 2: Votto with twenty one hundred and thirty five hits, just
37:59
Speaker 2: above Johnny Benches two thousand and forty eight hits. So, Mike,
38:03
Speaker 2: you've won Texas go see the Cincinnati Reds. I have
38:06
Speaker 2: up to four to give away. Do you have use
38:07
Speaker 2: for for do you need somewhere in between?
38:10
Speaker 17: Yeah?
38:10
Speaker 2: I can use for it. Okay, Mike, I'm going to
38:13
Speaker 2: put you on hold or is there anything else you
38:15
Speaker 2: want to talk about? Do you want to talk about the Reds?
38:16
Speaker 2: Anything else going on before I get you these tickets?
38:19
Speaker 2: I'm good, Thank you.
38:20
Speaker 8: I'll listen to you all day long.
38:21
Speaker 2: Well, Mike, I appreciate that thing. Yeah, we probably don't
38:23
Speaker 2: want to hear me anymore. Thanks for listening, Mike. We
38:26
Speaker 2: really appreciate that. And we got tickets to go see
38:29
Speaker 2: Saint Louis on Sunday the twenty fourth. We got four
38:31
Speaker 2: tickets for you then for a nice family four pick.
38:33
Speaker 2: I'll put you on hold and Ryan will get all
38:35
Speaker 2: of your information. And last question for you, Mike, do
38:39
Speaker 2: you have or can you get the ballpark app on
38:42
Speaker 2: your phone? Yeah? Okay, I have one tickets before too
38:45
Speaker 2: easy as pod. Then we'll be able to send those
38:47
Speaker 2: right to you. Mike. Thanks so much for tuning in.
38:49
Speaker 2: We appreciate it. Thank you man. All right, that is
38:52
Speaker 2: Mike tuning in from Charleston. Just want to take us
38:54
Speaker 2: to go see the Cincinnati Reds. I'll have some more
38:55
Speaker 2: tickets that I'll give away next Tuesday. That's my last
38:58
Speaker 2: day of guest host for Dave Allen, So I'll give
39:01
Speaker 2: some more tickets to go see the Reds next Tuesday.
39:04
Speaker 2: As we're doing the program, just about fourteen minutes left
39:08
Speaker 2: in the show this morning, and one last thing I
39:11
Speaker 2: wanted to do is I do this every once in
39:13
Speaker 2: a while when I have the opportunity to do the
39:14
Speaker 2: morning show, because I don't have an opportunity to do
39:16
Speaker 2: it all that often. I spend a lot of my
39:17
Speaker 2: capital in the afternoons on Hotline with Dave weekly for
39:20
Speaker 2: the state wide show there and some folks like Mike
39:24
Speaker 2: just talked about. Mike listens to the station all day long.
39:26
Speaker 2: A lot of people segment their days. We have a
39:28
Speaker 2: lot of morning listeners and we have afternoon listeners. Not
39:31
Speaker 2: all of everybody listen to both. Some of the features
39:34
Speaker 2: that we have on Metronews Hotline with repeating guests. I
39:37
Speaker 2: think last time I brought in a special interview, but
39:39
Speaker 2: I thought this morning I would try something with one
39:41
Speaker 2: of our with one of the benchmarks that we have
39:44
Speaker 2: every week. We have been really lucky for ten or
39:47
Speaker 2: twelve years now to have a very close relationship with
39:49
Speaker 2: the tech outlet see Net, which is they've been around
39:52
Speaker 2: forever and covering cutting edge tech from they started with
39:57
Speaker 2: like laptops and home computers and things like that, and
40:01
Speaker 2: they've now evolved through phones and apps and online services
40:04
Speaker 2: and streaming. They cover just about everything from the tech
40:06
Speaker 2: gam and we've had several different who have become really
40:11
Speaker 2: great tech communicators that have been part of the Hotline
40:13
Speaker 2: family over the years. Bridget Carey who's now on I
40:16
Speaker 2: think the Morning shows on ABC and CBS, one of
40:20
Speaker 2: those two sometimes as their tech correspond We also had
40:23
Speaker 2: Ian Sheer who is now doing his own media mogul
40:28
Speaker 2: thing where he started his own media network and he's
40:30
Speaker 2: doing a great job. But Albert Rhadi has been with
40:33
Speaker 2: us for a few years now and she has really
40:35
Speaker 2: done a great job in communicating a lot of the
40:37
Speaker 2: things that's going on in tech. This is a weekly
40:39
Speaker 2: feature that we do on Hotline where we talk about
40:41
Speaker 2: all the things that are coming on tech. Your streaming
40:43
Speaker 2: services prices might be increasing, new apps that might be
40:46
Speaker 2: coming up that helps your privacy. It could be something
40:49
Speaker 2: with the Apple or your Android phone. She covers it all,
40:53
Speaker 2: and I think it's a massively informative section that's a
40:56
Speaker 2: little bit underserved if you're looking for some of this information.
40:58
Speaker 2: So I thought that yesterday a joined us. She was
41:01
Speaker 2: back for the first time in a couple weeks after
41:02
Speaker 2: going to some different conferences and so forth dealing with tech.
41:04
Speaker 2: So I thought I would play back that interview. So
41:07
Speaker 2: we'll go ahead and do that now. This is from
41:08
Speaker 2: Hotline yesterday. This is Dave Weekly and Me from Hotline
41:12
Speaker 2: afternoon three to six right here on five EDWCHS talking
41:15
Speaker 2: to Abra Ahiti. She is a senior tech writer for
41:18
Speaker 2: c Net.
41:20
Speaker 4: This is a tech news segment. Abra Ahiti is back
41:23
Speaker 4: after a week away. Abra, thanks for coming back on
41:25
Speaker 4: the show. You were missed last week.
41:27
Speaker 19: I missed you guys. Thank you for having me back.
41:29
Speaker 19: I appreciate it.
41:30
Speaker 4: Let's talk a little bit about YouTube testing, AI search
41:34
Speaker 4: tools that deliver video and text and you know what,
41:37
Speaker 4: I'm really glad that you sent me this story because
41:39
Speaker 4: I was not aware of this. I'm a premium YouTube subscriber,
41:44
Speaker 4: so you know, I mean I should be getting something
41:47
Speaker 4: from my monthly subscription. I can go in and use
41:49
Speaker 4: this right now, right you can.
41:51
Speaker 19: So I'm also a premium subscriber, and so you and
41:54
Speaker 19: I are feeling the pain of all these price hikes.
41:56
Speaker 19: It now cost sixteen dollars a month. But I just
41:58
Speaker 19: tried using it on my desktop. Apparently this is only
42:01
Speaker 19: available on desktop for now. I'm sure eventually we'll come
42:03
Speaker 19: to mobile. It hasn't rolled out to me yet, but
42:06
Speaker 19: when it does roll out to more premium subscribers, what
42:09
Speaker 19: you'll be able to do. It's kind of use YouTube
42:11
Speaker 19: as more of a pseudo search engine, which makes sense
42:14
Speaker 19: considering it's own by Google. But instead of just typing
42:18
Speaker 19: in a query and then getting video results, you'll also
42:22
Speaker 19: get text results. So say, for example, you want to
42:24
Speaker 19: plan a road trip, or you want ideas for some
42:26
Speaker 19: sort of itinerary, you'll get a mix of video and
42:30
Speaker 19: text responses and also YouTube shorts. Kind of just a
42:33
Speaker 19: more dynamic search result, very much mirroring what you're able
42:36
Speaker 19: to get when you do kind of a traditional Google
42:38
Speaker 19: search now right, Like when you do a search, you
42:40
Speaker 19: might get video suggestions as well as text results. So
42:45
Speaker 19: what Google's really been doing that's been interesting across all
42:48
Speaker 19: of its apps with AI features is making things a
42:53
Speaker 19: little bit more seamless. So even now you could use
42:55
Speaker 19: Google Maps and ask for recommendations on what to do
42:58
Speaker 19: in your area and it'll suggest things using Gemini so
43:01
Speaker 19: very much those like merging and blending of all their
43:04
Speaker 19: platforms using all their AI advancements.
43:06
Speaker 2: That's interesting.
43:07
Speaker 4: You know, we just had a guest on earlier in
43:10
Speaker 4: the hour, who's got a movie on right now?
43:12
Speaker 2: On Netflix?
43:13
Speaker 4: And in terms of like minutes of engagement, you know,
43:18
Speaker 4: when Netflix got into the streaming business, I'm guessing they
43:22
Speaker 4: knew that they were going to be in competition with
43:25
Speaker 4: Disney and Warner Brothers, but I'm guessing they probably didn't
43:29
Speaker 4: know that they would be in competition with YouTube for subscribers.
43:34
Speaker 19: Absolutely, And I mean think about the fact that you know,
43:37
Speaker 19: the Oscars in a couple of years will be on YouTube,
43:39
Speaker 19: right things where events that you don't even think could
43:43
Speaker 19: someday be on YouTube, you know, any other ords or
43:48
Speaker 19: sporting events, things like that, that will increasingly go to
43:50
Speaker 19: platforms like YouTube, and that gives really does give streamers
43:54
Speaker 19: a run for their money. And it's already such a
43:56
Speaker 19: competitive space, but YouTube is really coming up on that
43:59
Speaker 19: front and there finding more ways to get us to spend.
44:01
Speaker 17: Time on there.
44:02
Speaker 4: Coop, you were the first person I knew that had
44:05
Speaker 4: YouTube Premium, And yes, I have to say that now
44:09
Speaker 4: that I've gone to the dark side, I'm never going back.
44:12
Speaker 2: Well, just the ads off of YouTube itself. I mean
44:15
Speaker 2: YouTube premium without ads even made it to what was
44:19
Speaker 2: the music festival that was having in a couple of weeks, Yeah,
44:22
Speaker 2: to the Coachella because when Beaver was there the first
44:24
Speaker 2: time that he did did it. He was playing YouTube
44:26
Speaker 2: videos on stage and Katy Perry sent a Instagram message
44:30
Speaker 2: was like, well, thank god he has h he has
44:31
Speaker 2: premium and I don't want to watch the ads. And
44:34
Speaker 2: it's true, man. It is it like when I when
44:37
Speaker 2: I'm hanging out with somebody like, oh, hey, watch this video,
44:40
Speaker 2: and they bring up a video on YouTube and they
44:41
Speaker 2: want me to watch it. I'm like like, I'm ready
44:44
Speaker 2: to jump out the window. I'm like, how many ads
44:45
Speaker 2: do we have to watch? They stopped the thing in
44:47
Speaker 2: the middle and show you an ad?
44:48
Speaker 12: What?
44:48
Speaker 2: Like I didn't even know they did all that. Honestly,
44:50
Speaker 2: I've been a premium subscriber for so long, man.
44:52
Speaker 4: But but now you're paying sixteen bucks a month.
44:56
Speaker 2: Well that's good. That's okay though, because I've cut out
44:58
Speaker 2: probably seventy percent of the rest of US streamers. So
45:00
Speaker 2: there you go. Yeah, like I'm down to like three,
45:03
Speaker 2: I've gotten rid of almost everything. Yeah, there you go.
45:05
Speaker 4: I mean people who are making the like I say, Eber,
45:08
Speaker 4: I'm guessing Netflix never thought that they would actually lose
45:11
Speaker 4: subs to YouTube.
45:14
Speaker 17: Yeah, exactly.
45:15
Speaker 19: The thing about YouTube that's different is, you know, like Dale,
45:18
Speaker 19: I tend to cancel a lot of my typical streaming
45:20
Speaker 19: services when I don't have a show that I'm watching
45:22
Speaker 19: at the moment. But I'm always watching YouTube, right, I
45:25
Speaker 19: will never cancel my YouTube premium subscription, hopefully because I'm
45:29
Speaker 19: on there every day. But I'm not on Netflix every day.
45:31
Speaker 19: You know, these other streamers I can cut pretty easily,
45:34
Speaker 19: but not YouTube.
45:35
Speaker 4: Tell me a little bit about this open AI phone.
45:37
Speaker 4: What do you think about this?
45:39
Speaker 19: Yeah, so apparently open ai is working on a phone,
45:43
Speaker 19: and it kind of makes sense because think about the
45:45
Speaker 19: phones that you can buy today, Right, how many times
45:48
Speaker 19: have we been told about all these AI features that
45:51
Speaker 19: we may or may not care about. But every phone
45:53
Speaker 19: maker is so focused on AI, So why not as
45:56
Speaker 19: an AI first company, Why wouldn't open AI explore opportunities
46:01
Speaker 19: to create hardware where their AI technology is baked in
46:04
Speaker 19: from the start. So this is something where you know
46:06
Speaker 19: it can handle it potentially could handle tasks across.
46:10
Speaker 17: Apps for you, so you don't have to open different apps.
46:12
Speaker 19: Kind of having this AI agent that can really take
46:15
Speaker 19: over and become a lot more seamless.
46:18
Speaker 17: I think, I think this is.
46:19
Speaker 19: Kind of a no brainer, I you know, But the
46:21
Speaker 19: other thing is people don't buy phones just for the AI.
46:24
Speaker 19: They buy phones for cameras and for you know, messaging
46:27
Speaker 19: and communicating with people. So what I'm curious about is
46:31
Speaker 19: will our tastes evolve to the point where AI becomes
46:34
Speaker 19: actually a very central need for us to purchase a
46:37
Speaker 19: specific phone over the other custom me It's like whish
46:39
Speaker 19: phone has the best camera, and so that's what that's
46:42
Speaker 19: how I kind of make my decision.
46:43
Speaker 17: So it's it'll be interesting to see how that evolves
46:45
Speaker 17: with time, you.
46:45
Speaker 4: Know what though, I mean, this is an incredibly competitive space,
46:49
Speaker 4: right A lot of companies have tried and a lot
46:52
Speaker 4: of companies have died trying to take on some of
46:54
Speaker 4: the big boys when it comes to phones. But man, oh, well,
46:57
Speaker 4: I wanted to ask you also, now that we have
47:01
Speaker 4: this battle in court between open AI and Elon Musk,
47:05
Speaker 4: I'm guessing seeing it is probably all over this right,
47:08
Speaker 4: this is right up your rally.
47:10
Speaker 17: It really is.
47:11
Speaker 19: It's you know, two very passionate people about this space
47:17
Speaker 19: and how it can shape the future of the industry
47:21
Speaker 19: and regulation and yeah, definitely two hot personalities that are
47:27
Speaker 19: make it worth following.
47:28
Speaker 4: Well, I think a lot of people who watch tech
47:31
Speaker 4: news pretty closely thought that this would never actually get
47:34
Speaker 4: to cord, and now that it has reached Cord and
47:37
Speaker 4: to the point where Elon Musk is testifying that nobody
47:41
Speaker 4: thought that that was really going to happen.
47:43
Speaker 2: But it has.
47:44
Speaker 19: Absolutely it's reached a point where, yeah, this has been
47:47
Speaker 19: years in the making, and so to see it now
47:49
Speaker 19: and we'll see how long it takes for this all
47:51
Speaker 19: to settle down.
47:52
Speaker 17: But yeah, definitely very interesting to see how this is evolved.
47:54
Speaker 4: The other thing about that is, you know, I'm leading
47:57
Speaker 4: into your segment. I was talking about, you know, the
48:00
Speaker 4: tech giants that are reporting earnings today, Meta, Google, Microsoft,
48:04
Speaker 4: Amazon all after the bell. This this this court proceeding
48:09
Speaker 4: kind of maybe kicks the can for an open Ai.
48:12
Speaker 4: I po a little bit farther down the road than
48:14
Speaker 4: most people anticipated too, it might be a while.
48:17
Speaker 17: That's a good point.
48:18
Speaker 19: Yeah, any any kind of bumps in the road like
48:20
Speaker 19: this could definitely push that a little bit furthered down
48:23
Speaker 19: for sure.
48:23
Speaker 2: Right.
48:24
Speaker 4: Oh, we can't do a segment without talking about Uber.
48:27
Speaker 4: So oh, and this kind of relates to Elon Musk
48:31
Speaker 4: as well. I mean, you know, Elon's master plan is
48:35
Speaker 4: that the X app would do everything. Okay, that's where
48:38
Speaker 4: you would live. So so now you've got Uber basically saying, hey,
48:42
Speaker 4: we'll not only get you you will get you a ride.
48:45
Speaker 4: We want to get your hotels as well.
48:47
Speaker 17: Yes, definitely.
48:48
Speaker 19: So Uber has also had this long envisioned dream of
48:51
Speaker 19: being a super app, and so this is our next
48:53
Speaker 19: step towards that. We're through a partnership with Expedia, you
48:56
Speaker 19: can book your hotel as well, not just your ride.
48:59
Speaker 19: And you know about the ways that Uber has expanded
49:01
Speaker 19: over the years, Uber eats is a really big deal
49:03
Speaker 19: now too. They're kind of doing more cross platform capabilities
49:08
Speaker 19: between the traditional.
49:10
Speaker 17: Uber righte hailing app and Uber eats as well.
49:12
Speaker 19: But this is a really interesting step and the other
49:14
Speaker 19: thing they're doing is getting very deep into self driving,
49:17
Speaker 19: so Uber wants to have you know, they want they
49:21
Speaker 19: want to be here, to stick around. They don't want
49:22
Speaker 19: to just you know, be one segment of your life,
49:25
Speaker 19: you know what.
49:26
Speaker 4: And finally we've got something coming up in less than
49:29
Speaker 4: an hour actually about the fact that Little Caesars is
49:32
Speaker 4: now in the business of delivering pizza by drone in Texas.
49:37
Speaker 4: And when you and I started talking about drone delivery
49:41
Speaker 4: a couple of years ago, it's like, oh, this will
49:43
Speaker 4: never happen or all the problems that they'd have to
49:47
Speaker 4: work out in this regard, and this is happening.
49:49
Speaker 17: Okay, this is happening absolutely. I mean, this is something
49:53
Speaker 17: that companies have not given up on.
49:55
Speaker 19: There's so many companies that are really you know, Google's
49:58
Speaker 19: parent company, Alphabet is also really diving really deep into this.
50:01
Speaker 19: So you know, Amazon wants to deliver your packages by drone.
50:05
Speaker 19: It seems like something that nobody's willing to give up on.
50:07
Speaker 19: So yeah, that's our future.
50:09
Speaker 4: Yeah, when when you're delivering like literally millions of pizzas
50:14
Speaker 4: or millions of packages, you know, if suddenly you lose
50:18
Speaker 4: a drone or a package doesn't get where it's supposed
50:21
Speaker 4: to be in the big picture, that's really nothing compared
50:24
Speaker 4: to the savings that these mega companies are looking at.
50:26
Speaker 4: If they can make the system work.
50:28
Speaker 17: Exactly, they'll just send you another one and keep going.
50:31
Speaker 4: Yep, Abra, thanks for coming on the show today. It
50:34
Speaker 4: was good to have you back. That is Dave Weekly
50:37
Speaker 4: from yesterday's afternoon Hotline with What Day Weekly interviewing Abrahati.
50:42
Speaker 4: They've seen it, senior tech reporter. Always have Abrar's contributions
50:46
Speaker 4: to the show. She's been doing it for a long
50:48
Speaker 4: time and really give some insights in what's coming up
50:50
Speaker 4: in tech and it's confusing these days.
50:52
Speaker 2: So it's good to have it. We need to take
50:54
Speaker 2: our final break. We'll be back right after this.
50:56
Speaker 7: The Dave Allen Show is presented in part by Generations

Speaker 20: of everything up, Chris Pritt has fought to lower property

Speaker 20: taxes to protect our wallets and bring hard working family

51:45
Speaker 20: and securing the border to keep our communities safe from
