- 0:29Speaker 2: You know, I'm always good. We're gonna be.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Talking you and I I for folks that don't know
- 0:35Speaker 1: you do, uh, you do have a very uh, very
- 0:38Speaker 1: upbeat look on things for good reason. I mean, we
- 0:40Speaker 1: talk about the works you guys do at Larson and
- 0:42Speaker 1: what a what a rewarding career and job it is,
- 0:45Speaker 1: and the opportunity to get to really help people, and
- 0:48Speaker 1: we're talking about something that unless something's changed, I don't
- 0:53Speaker 1: know that you guys. You guys do siting at Larsen
- 0:55Speaker 1: Home Services, but you got a question about them, didn't you.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Well, look, this is called it's a show.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Called Ask the Experts, right, so.
- 1:04Speaker 2: You can ask anything you want and it's what we
- 1:05Speaker 2: talk about on the Home Services Home Show. Our podcast
- 1:09Speaker 2: is Bring On Questions, Any Questions, Me and my counterpart,
- 1:14Speaker 2: Josh Keeney. We've got I don't know, forty five years
- 1:17Speaker 2: of construction experience, and if we don't know the answer,
- 1:22Speaker 2: we'll find it out. But I got an email from
- 1:26Speaker 2: someone who listens. I don't know if it was from
- 1:29Speaker 2: the podcast or from from the radio show, but there's
- 1:32Speaker 2: just so many avenues to get a hold of me.
- 1:34Speaker 2: It's hard to keep track of Sean kidding, but they're asking.
- 1:39Speaker 2: They're one about side and they wanted to reside their house,
- 1:41Speaker 2: and it came with you know, they're talking about redoing
- 1:44Speaker 2: soft and fatia and the gutters, which is stuff that
- 1:47Speaker 2: we do. We don't do siding yet. We'll just leave
- 1:52Speaker 2: that there, but no, we don't do siding. But they
- 1:56Speaker 2: were wondering what type of siding is best? And well,
- 1:59Speaker 2: that is such a loaded question. What type of siding
- 2:03Speaker 2: is best? There are so many different types of siding.
- 2:06Speaker 2: I couldn't begin to even go through them all. You've
- 2:10Speaker 2: got steel siding, aluminum siding, you've got seamless steel siding,
- 2:13Speaker 2: you've got vinyl siding, and then within the vinyl siding class.
- 2:17Speaker 2: There's probably twenty different grades of vinyl siding, meaning best
- 2:23Speaker 2: to worst. You've got a lot of what's really taken
- 2:26Speaker 2: over in the past twenty years and become a lot
- 2:30Speaker 2: more relevant is fiber cement siding. You've got el brands
- 2:34Speaker 2: like LP smart siding, and there's a few different kinds
- 2:39Speaker 2: and those are those are made in factories. They're they're
- 2:42Speaker 2: very very hard siding, so they don't wick up a
- 2:46Speaker 2: lot of water. They come prepainted or pre primed, and
- 2:51Speaker 2: all your steel and vinyl, all those sidings come prepainted.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Now you can go back to old school cedar siding
- 2:56Speaker 2: or cedar shakes siding anyway, it's endless. But what is
- 2:59Speaker 2: most common right now are fiber cement sidings and vital sidings,
- 3:05Speaker 2: and I will run through a few pros and cons
- 3:07Speaker 2: of each. You know, steel and aluminum siding used to
- 3:10Speaker 2: be super popular, and seamless steel siding where they came
- 3:14Speaker 2: out with a machine kind of like a gutter machine,
- 3:17Speaker 2: like a gutter shutter machine, and ran it out seamless.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Now that's cool and all, and you don't have any seams,
- 3:24Speaker 2: But as far as like functionability, the seamless aspect to
- 3:29Speaker 2: a siding isn't like the seamless aspect to a gutter.
- 3:33Speaker 2: A gutter, we want the gutter to be seamless so
- 3:36Speaker 2: it doesn't leak. Right everywhere you've got a seam, you've
- 3:39Speaker 2: got sealant, and it leaks. With seamless seamless siding, it
- 3:44Speaker 2: doesn't really matter. You just get a more quote unquote
- 3:47Speaker 2: seamless look. Although with most sidings it's pretty hard to
- 3:50Speaker 2: see the seams anyway, so I think that's become a
- 3:54Speaker 2: lot less popular. The other thing with any sort of
- 3:57Speaker 2: metal siding is it dentse It can dent pretty easily.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I mean, if you're a great lawnmower, like like I am,
- 4:04Speaker 2: the chances of shooting a rock at your house or
- 4:06Speaker 2: slim to none because I've never done that before. But
- 4:09Speaker 2: you put a dent in that metal siding, like, it's
- 4:13Speaker 2: not just something you can easily fit and fix. There's
- 4:15Speaker 2: not a lot of dentless siding repair people out there,
- 4:19Speaker 2: so I guess I tend to lean towards, depending on
- 4:22Speaker 2: what your budget is, vinyl, which a lot of people
- 4:26Speaker 2: will be like, really you like vinyl? I do? I
- 4:29Speaker 2: like vinyl siding a lot. And here's why, it's relatively
- 4:33Speaker 2: inexpensive when as far as a good product. Now, again
- 4:37Speaker 2: there's a lot of different grades' yep, what was that.
- 4:40Speaker 1: No, that's exactly what I was going to ask. I
- 4:42Speaker 1: think I was going to say, Andrew. I think one
- 4:44Speaker 1: of the reasons why people are are shocked to hear
- 4:46Speaker 1: vinyl is a lot of folks experience with vinyl is
- 4:49Speaker 1: that builder grade stuff, and they're going, why would you ever?
- 4:52Speaker 1: And there's a difference between.
- 4:55Speaker 2: There's huge differences, right, So there's something that's a lot thicker,
- 4:59Speaker 2: has better finishes on it. Some of them actually put
- 5:01Speaker 2: like clear coats on it, like protective coats so it
- 5:04Speaker 2: doesn't fade as much. There's also vinyl siding that comes
- 5:06Speaker 2: built in with UH with insulation on the back of it. Now,
- 5:10Speaker 2: what we know about insulation is that insulation that's on
- 5:13Speaker 2: there is probably not going to do anything for you
- 5:15Speaker 2: in the winter simply because if that if that heat
- 5:18Speaker 2: gets to that insulation, it's already outside your house anyway.
- 5:21Speaker 2: But and I don't know what the R value is,
- 5:23Speaker 2: and I'm not sure the exact specifications, but it will
- 5:28Speaker 2: it should keep your house cooler in the summer, because
- 5:33Speaker 2: it would it would actually slow down the radiant heat
- 5:35Speaker 2: transfer from outside to inside. So also vinyl siding is okay.
- 5:42Speaker 2: So water can get behind most sidings and some sidings,
- 5:45Speaker 2: if water gets behind it, it can be a real problem
- 5:47Speaker 2: because it's not made for water to get behind it.
- 5:50Speaker 2: It doesn't really ventilate. So if certain sidings, if they're
- 5:53Speaker 2: not flashed properly, not done properly, water gets behind there.
- 5:56Speaker 2: You can have some major mold issues with vinyl side.
- 6:00Speaker 2: It's actually made, I mean, water can get behind it.
- 6:02Speaker 2: You've got to you always have to have a good
- 6:04Speaker 2: house wrap underneath it. And it actually has wheep poles
- 6:07Speaker 2: on it, so if water gets behind it, the water
- 6:10Speaker 2: can drip out and air can travel through it so
- 6:13Speaker 2: it can dry. Okay, there's vinyl, and it can be
- 6:17Speaker 2: relatively inexpensive, but can actually, i mean really really make
- 6:22Speaker 2: a home look nice. LP Smart or LP I shouldn't
- 6:26Speaker 2: say LPLP is a brand. They're not paying me for this.
- 6:28Speaker 2: I like that brand. I think it's a great brand
- 6:31Speaker 2: of siding. It's what I specifically have on my home,
- 6:35Speaker 2: and it's a very hard fiber cement type siding. Can
- 6:40Speaker 2: mine actually has what's called a diamond cote on it,
- 6:42Speaker 2: so it's pre painted in the factory has like a
- 6:45Speaker 2: I don't even know, twenty or twenty five year warranty
- 6:47Speaker 2: on the paint. So now that takes a little bit
- 6:51Speaker 2: more of a skilled craftman to install. Are it's not
- 6:54Speaker 2: as forgiving as a vinyl siding. You know vinyl siding,
- 6:57Speaker 2: it's got a lot of nail holes on the top flange,
- 7:00Speaker 2: and a big mistake people make is they nail it
- 7:03Speaker 2: too tight. Oh, with heat and cool houses expanding contracting,
- 7:08Speaker 2: so does your siding. So if you're ever driving past
- 7:10Speaker 2: a new housing development and you see the side of
- 7:12Speaker 2: a home and the siding's all wavy, it's because they
- 7:14Speaker 2: nailed the siding too tight. So as soon as it
- 7:17Speaker 2: expands and contracts, it can't move, so it starts to
- 7:21Speaker 2: bow and ripple and it looks horrible. And the only
- 7:23Speaker 2: way to fix that is to tear it all off
- 7:25Speaker 2: and start over. So it has to have a little gift,
- 7:27Speaker 2: so those nails are never nailed tightly. Fiber cement is
- 7:31Speaker 2: completely different. Again, it's a lot more expensive. It gives
- 7:34Speaker 2: you a more traditional wood look to your siding, but
- 7:39Speaker 2: it's not traditional wood. It's made to last longer, pre
- 7:42Speaker 2: painted in the factory, or at least pre primed in
- 7:45Speaker 2: the factory, so your paint's going to last a lot
- 7:48Speaker 2: a lot longer. But the one thing I will say
- 7:50Speaker 2: with all of these is it's kind of like a
- 7:53Speaker 2: roofing system in that the critical details need to be
- 7:57Speaker 2: done before the siding goes on. Like a good roofing system,
- 8:01Speaker 2: like our Ultimate Roofing Solution, we are doing the important
- 8:05Speaker 2: stuff first, the ice and water, the leak barrier, the
- 8:08Speaker 2: roofed wall flashing, the pipe flashing, the chimney flashing, the crickets,
- 8:11Speaker 2: the ventilation. All of that stuff is done first. Then
- 8:15Speaker 2: we put some nice beautiful shingles on over the top
- 8:17Speaker 2: to protect the important stuff, to protect the stuff that
- 8:21Speaker 2: will keep your home from leaking. Siding is the same way,
- 8:25Speaker 2: and siding needs to be done in a step by
- 8:27Speaker 2: step process where flashings are done around windows, windows are taped,
- 8:32Speaker 2: house wrap goes on. House wrap needs to be overlapped
- 8:36Speaker 2: the correct way. You do it bottom up so the
- 8:39Speaker 2: top layer can overlap. Because water will almost certainly get
- 8:44Speaker 2: behind your siding at some point. That's okay, it's meant
- 8:48Speaker 2: to It's meant to get behind a vinyl or aluminum
- 8:52Speaker 2: or a steel siding, so we have to make sure
- 8:55Speaker 2: those critical details are done properly before we put the
- 8:58Speaker 2: siding on. The siding is like the beautiful frosting on
- 9:01Speaker 2: the cake. Okay, the other stuff it doesn't look so nice,
- 9:05Speaker 2: but it's way more important to the siding are way
- 9:08Speaker 2: more important to the integrity of your home, which is again,
- 9:12Speaker 2: don't do siding. I know a lot about it. I've
- 9:15Speaker 2: done a lot of siding, I've sold siding. There's my opinion.
- 9:18Speaker 1: It's interesting. It's just sing to talk a little bit
- 9:20Speaker 1: too about siding. And when you point out, Andrew, I
- 9:23Speaker 1: think one of the things that really caught my attention
- 9:25Speaker 1: there was part of that last point is is similar
- 9:28Speaker 1: to what when we talk about roofing is is what
- 9:32Speaker 1: you see is really more visually, is more about visuals
- 9:37Speaker 1: and less about performances. As as as a homeowner, it's
- 9:41Speaker 1: what you don't see often times that makes all the difference.
- 9:44Speaker 1: And I talk about you know, I know one of
- 9:46Speaker 1: the great things with largstom services, whether you're doing roofs,
- 9:49Speaker 1: you're doing roofs or any other type of work on
- 9:52Speaker 1: somebody's houses, you love to have, you know, come out,
- 9:54Speaker 1: get that, get that estimate, that get that home inspection.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Same thing with signing is get that get to have
- 9:59Speaker 1: that conversation going. But also making sure who you work
- 10:02Speaker 1: with has a great reputation as well. Is once that
- 10:05Speaker 1: stuff goes on, you're not going to know you know
- 10:09Speaker 1: how well it was done until gosh forbid, you have
- 10:12Speaker 1: an issue. Working with somebody that you trust in these
- 10:15Speaker 1: areas is really really important, isn't it, Andrew?
- 10:18Speaker 2: It's extremely important because again it has to be done right. Yeah.
- 10:24Speaker 2: And look, I drive by housing developments all the time,
- 10:28Speaker 2: and this is the stuff I look at. Okay, we've
- 10:30Speaker 2: talked about this before. It is a disease, it's an illness.
- 10:34Speaker 2: I can't get rid of it. I look at gutters, roofing, facia, trim, soffit, siding,
- 10:39Speaker 2: That's what I look at. And I see that waviness
- 10:43Speaker 2: all the time, and I think to myself, a does
- 10:46Speaker 2: that homeowner even notice it? Because some people don't look
- 10:49Speaker 2: at stuff like that. Some people don't have an illness
- 10:51Speaker 2: like I have. Right, they don't look at that type
- 10:54Speaker 2: of stuff, and if they did look at it, they
- 10:55Speaker 2: wouldn't really know what's going on. Anyway. I see it
- 10:58Speaker 2: from a mile away and well that was that was
- 11:01Speaker 2: done by a rookie. Right, that's a rookie mistake. Very simple,
- 11:05Speaker 2: very simple, something very simple to happen. But I will
- 11:08Speaker 2: say this, a lot of people call us and say, hey,
- 11:11Speaker 2: do you do siding. No, you know, we don't do siding.
- 11:13Speaker 2: We do soft in facia, we do gutters, we do rooking,
- 11:15Speaker 2: we do instalation. That's what we try to be experts in.
- 11:18Speaker 2: I think the day might come that we do do siding. Again,
- 11:21Speaker 2: I've done a ton of it. I know a lot
- 11:23Speaker 2: about it. It's relatively easy to do. Just making sure
- 11:26Speaker 2: you do the things, the important details correctly, that's that's
- 11:32Speaker 2: the most important part. But a lot of people think
- 11:33Speaker 2: they need to do new siding to dress their house up.
- 11:37Speaker 2: We do soft and facial work every single week. So
- 11:42Speaker 2: if you're not sure, like, okay, do I hate my
- 11:44Speaker 2: siding or do I hate my trim color. There's so
- 11:45Speaker 2: many houses that were built twenty years ago that were
- 11:47Speaker 2: a beige, A beige house with white trim. Yes, I
- 11:50Speaker 2: mean right, yeah, some sort of gray, some sort of
- 11:53Speaker 2: beige with white trim. We can come and we can
- 11:57Speaker 2: redo the trim part of the house. A lot of
- 12:00Speaker 2: people are going to black black soft and in facia
- 12:03Speaker 2: with black gutters, it's super sharp. Now you take that
- 12:07Speaker 2: same beige siding you had, you put black trim on,
- 12:10Speaker 2: and then you maybe put some black shutters on. I'm
- 12:13Speaker 2: just saying that that is way less intrusive, a lot
- 12:17Speaker 2: less expensive, and we can put some gutter shutter on.
- 12:20Speaker 2: So now your gutters are maintenance free and you would
- 12:22Speaker 2: be amazed at the difference it would make on your
- 12:25Speaker 2: home without tearing all the siding off. Now, if you
- 12:27Speaker 2: do that and it's not enough, you can always do
- 12:29Speaker 2: the siding after that. So we do the soft in
- 12:33Speaker 2: infacia and gutter all the time because our reps say, hey,
- 12:35Speaker 2: you want to do the gutters. Now's a great time
- 12:38Speaker 2: to maybe redo your soft and in facia as well, because
- 12:40Speaker 2: now instead of only being able to look at putting
- 12:43Speaker 2: white gutters on, now we have a whole array of
- 12:45Speaker 2: colors and we can match the soft and in facia
- 12:47Speaker 2: trim to it, and now we can really change the
- 12:50Speaker 2: look of your entire home. So just something to throw.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Out, it's a really great option for folks as well.
- 12:56Speaker 1: As we talk with Andrew Larson from Larsen Home Services,
- 12:59Speaker 1: also by the way. Just just kind of a timely
- 13:02Speaker 1: conversation as well. And Andrew, I think folks need to
- 13:04Speaker 1: think about this is you guys are going year round
- 13:07Speaker 1: as well for people are and I know we're still
- 13:09Speaker 1: in summer, and I certainly don't want to start getting
- 13:11Speaker 1: the winter and fall mentality in people's heads, but the
- 13:14Speaker 1: reality is it will come soon. Folks need to realize.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Lars Home Services, you guys are here for people year round.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Now is the time, though, to start having those conversations
- 13:23Speaker 1: about about having your house looked at, whether you're looking
- 13:26Speaker 1: new roof, you're looking for facia, gutters, all that great stuff.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Andrew and the team love to talk with you. It's
- 13:31Speaker 1: a really great, really great opportunity to learn a little
- 13:33Speaker 1: as well about your home. All I got to do
- 13:35Speaker 1: is give them a call. Six oh eight five three
