- 0:17SPEAKER_00: This is a story about a girl who did not fit in, not at home, not at school.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Not with the noise, not with the mess.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: A girl who couldn't do it right.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: She really, really tried, but she just couldn't get it right.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: So she went to live by herself, away from the boom, boom.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Away she went, by herself.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: the edge of the woods, and she loved it.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: She did have some friends, feathered ones, winged ones that would whistle to her in the mornings.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: She would open her back door and the birds would land branch by branch on the tree
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: and they lifted their sweet beaks and sang
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: and Lindu would sing back.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Each morning they would sing to each other, and Lindu would go back into her house, smiling.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: The leaves began to redden, began to brown, dry, and fall as autumn came.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And then the trees stood naked, and Lindu sat inside by her fire,
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: but the birds would come, waiting, waiting for their friend.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Lindu looked at them, their tiny frozen feet clinging to the trees.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: She opened her door,
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: wrapped her cardigan tighter around her and called,
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: You can't stay here,
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: not for the winter.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: You can't stay here, you have to fly south
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Fly south.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: The birds were frightened.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: But they trusted her.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: They trusted their friend.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: And so they followed the way her finger was pointing.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: They flew up, up into the sky.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: South they flew.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Euronor, the north wind, saw the tiny birds flying through the air.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And he laughed.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: He laughed.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: It will be a fun sport to blow these creatures out of the sky.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Look at them.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Pathetic.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: And he filled up his lungs with air and began to blow.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: But the birds kept on going south, south, south.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: They kept on going to warmer climes, to a place where they could rest.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Euronor was furious.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: I am blowing you in the other direction and you are not obeying me, he thundered.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: The birds did not speak and he called again.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Who told you to fly this way?
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Who?
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: No one dared to speak her name, but each faithful bird looked down protectively at Lindu's house.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: And he followed the line of their eyes, and he saw the smoke twisting from her chimney, and down he flew.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: He blustered open her back gate.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: He wheezed through the pathway and he battered open her door.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: And then he saw her.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: He saw why she did not fit in.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Because she was huge.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: She was full of hearts and stars and galaxies.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: And there were rainbows in her eyes.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: And he said, Will, will you come with me?
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: She looked at him and smiled.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: No, you have blustered your way in here without invitation.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: I will not go with you.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: The north wind blew away, furious, angry, frustrated.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: He did not know what to do with his passion or his rage, so he blew and he blew and he blew.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Mountains into the sea he blew.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: There was great unrest.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Aeron, man of the sun, with his courage, came to see the north wind.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Why do you make chaos of the earth and skies, wind?
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: It's her.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: and he told the sun how he had been rejected.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: The sun smiled and said, Let me speak to her.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: I'm good with women, they like me.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: When I shine, they smile.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: When I shine, they take off their clothes, they like me.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: And so he blazed down to Lindu's house, scorched to her front door and shone it open.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: And then he saw her.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: She was as huge and majestic and delicious as a north wind had said.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Will you come with me?
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: The sun said.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: She laughed.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: No, you have dazzled into my home and made no room for my shadow in this place.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: I like my shadow.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: I want to be with my shadow.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: I don't want you to outshine me.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: And out she pushed the sun.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: The son was furious, but he had been taught that big boys do not cry and so he did not show his pain.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: He hummed and he thumbed and he grinned all day long.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: But when night came,
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: he was frightened to go down because if he stopped shining,
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: maybe he would have to feel something and maybe those feelings would be
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: uncomfortable and the best bet was just to keep on shining,
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: he told to himself.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: So he shone and he shone and he shone.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: The stars could not shine.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: There was no room, no space for them to come out that night.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: And so the northern lights came to speak to the sun.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Sun, there is no room for my brothers and sisters, the stars, to shine this night.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Why do you shine so?
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: And the tenderness and delicacy of the northern lights opened the sun.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: And he spoke
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: of his rejection and his pain.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: And the northern lights,
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: curious,
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: flew down to the house that the sun had spoken of and stood at the door.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Lindu saw something.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: She opened the door
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: There was a light, tiny golden light, and then another, azure, and another, magenta, and another.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: He showed her every colour in his constellation.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: He hid nothing from her, and when he had finished, she said, I would go with you.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: The northern light smiled.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: And he nodded and he flew back up into the night sky.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: So Lindu began to make a dress for their union.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: The birds would come and bring her tiny things,
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: precious feathers,
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: and she would sew them and sew them,
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: each night looking out of her window waiting,
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: waiting for the northern lights to return.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Winter came and the birds left.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: Clouds began to creep across the window and she could not see the path of the northern light's return.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: So she opened her window and she pulled the clouds towards her and began to knit
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: them and knit them into her veil,
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: each night pulling clouds away so that she could see the return of the northern light's.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: And when her veil filled her bedroom and gushed out of the front door,
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: she realized he might not come back.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Pain cracked her heart open and she wept and wept and wept.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: Tears of crystals of all colours began to pour out of her and down the veil and she
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: made a sound that broke the heart of the earth.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: Mother Earth and Father Sky couldn't bear to hear their daughter cry with such pain.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: And so they surrounded her
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: They said, dear one, what is it that makes you cry so?
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: As they spoke, they looked at this huge one, this majestic being.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: They said, you have forgotten who you are.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: They reached in and they threw her up.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: into the stars and the heavens.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: She held on to the veil she had knitted and span around and around and around in the night sky.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: She who was rainbows and hearts and planets and billions of undiscovered galaxies.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: She who was the Milky Way.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: And when she was up there, she saw the northern lights and she said, You didn't come back.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: He looked at her and he said, I'm a natural phenomena.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: I didn't say I would come back.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: You're lucky that you saw me once in a lifetime.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: But you're here now.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: And so she was, stretched across the night sky in all of her beauty and grace and dignity.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: And there she is.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: If you look up, you can see her.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: The Milky Way.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: And if you're very lucky, you might see the Northern Lights too.
