Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are going through Psalm
- 0:18129. Psalm 129 is another one of the
- 0:21song of a sense. So these are the road trip songs
- 0:24that the children of Israel would sing as they were going up
- 0:27to one of the three annual feasts in Jerusalem.
- 0:31And this song is it's very interesting.
- 0:37Let's just dive into it because I I don't have a great intro
- 0:40into what this is other than I'll use the phrase an
- 0:45imprecatory Psalm. And imprecation is like a curse.
- 0:51It's saying may bad things happen to this person.
- 0:56So the I'm trying to think of any normal like imprecations or
- 1:03curses that people tend to have nowadays.
- 1:06Probably one of the more like quote UN quote savage ones that
- 1:10I've heard is may you have the day you deserve.
- 1:14Which is always a veiled way of saying you're a despicable
- 1:17person and you deserve bad things to happen to you.
- 1:19So may your day be bad because you are bad.
- 1:22I feel like the theater phrase break a leg is almost the
- 1:28opposite of this, that it's OK if I say it.
- 1:32Well, then it might not actually happen.
- 1:38I, I don't, I don't know of a ton of other curses that we tend
- 1:42to have. So I'll read through the passage
- 1:44and you'll see what I'm talking about today.
- 1:46Verse one, since my youth, they have often attacked me.
- 1:49Let Israel say, since my youth they have often attacked me, but
- 1:54they have not prevailed against me.
- 1:56Plowman plowed over my back. They made their furrows long.
- 2:01Yahweh is righteous. He has cut the ropes of the
- 2:05wicked. Let all who hate Zion be driven
- 2:09back in disgrace. Let them be like grass on the
- 2:12rooftops which Withers before it grows up and can't even fill the
- 2:17hands of the Reaper or the arms of the one who binds sheaves.
- 2:22Then none who passed by will say, may Yahweh's blessing be on
- 2:25you. We bless you in the name of
- 2:28Yahweh. Here one second.
- 2:32I'm going to interesting. OK, this is a super, super cool
- 2:40Psalm. Let me preface this with two
- 2:43things. Number one, remember this is the
- 2:46Old Testament. Christ has not yet come.
- 2:48There are some new metrics by which we understand Scripture as
- 2:54a result of the message of Jesus.
- 2:56So as a result of that, we are able both to say human evil is
- 3:05not something that we love, it's not something that we support,
- 3:09It's something that is a blight on our world.
- 3:12And all human evil will be punished ultimately by Jesus.
- 3:19And all human evil can be forgiven and it can be forgiven
- 3:26by Jesus because he is the one that we have truly sinned
- 3:28against. It's we have done these things,
- 3:31bringing sin and corruption into his good world that he made and
- 3:35that he sustains, and that each person is an image bearer of
- 3:41God. And so to mistreat and to do
- 3:45evil to any individual image bearer is to sin, to commit a
- 3:51crime against God himself. It's, if you will, it's the
- 3:56defacement of a politician or a businessman's face on a
- 4:03billboard or on, you know what, a park bench or something like
- 4:07that. It's to, you know, if there's a
- 4:10picture, I think I have a picture in here of my wife and
- 4:13I. It's off camera here.
- 4:14You can't see it, but there's a picture of my wife and I there.
- 4:17And if someone, you know, doodled on that and wrote
- 4:21obscenities and all this and that on my picture, that would
- 4:25be a crime first and foremost against me.
- 4:28Yeah. It's a crime against the here
- 4:31the the picture, the I I cannot remember for the life of me what
- 4:36you call that when a pictures in a frame.
- 4:38I guess you could say it's a crime against the frame, but
- 4:40ultimately the intent is this is a crime against Brian.
- 4:45And so it is that as we sin against people, we sin against
- 4:49God himself. And so God is able to forgive
- 4:53sins because sins are ultimately sins against God.
- 4:57But the total basis for the forgiveness of sins is a
- 5:03surrender, what Scripture calls belief and repentance that we
- 5:08say, God, I recognize that you are the one in charge, not me.
- 5:13And I've been living in opposition and rejection of your
- 5:17way. God, I surrender, I lay down my
- 5:19arms. I am going back to your way.
- 5:23I am pleading for your forgiveness of my sins, and I'm
- 5:28asking your Holy Spirit to come and live inside of me so that I
- 5:32would now live life not my way, but your way.
- 5:36So as a result of that truth, because all sin has been
- 5:41punished, the the punishment of all sin has been laid on Jesus
- 5:46Christ himself, that even if someone has sinned horribly
- 5:52against mankind and ultimately against God himself, there is a
- 5:57punishment that was met out for that sin.
- 6:00And that punishment was met out on Jesus Christ himself, the Son
- 6:05of God, who was punished not for what he did, but for what the
- 6:09repentant Sinner did. And so we can know all evil will
- 6:14be justly punished. Now this brings us to the
- 6:18imprecatory Psalm. We can pray number one, first
- 6:23and foremost for the salvation of sinners #2 we can and ought
- 6:29to pray for the Lord to bring vengeance and justice on those
- 6:35who are mistreating us. Now let me just throw in here,
- 6:40what we read in the Bible is not people praying imprecatory
- 6:46psalms against someone else at church who sat in your seat.
- 6:51You're being a baby. Stop it.
- 6:53Now. I don't know if anyone has ever
- 6:55actually, especially anyone listening to Tabernacle talk has
- 6:58ever actually had that, you know, kerfuffle with someone
- 7:02else. But if you have like, repent,
- 7:05repent of that sin, you're being a baby.
- 7:08If if you're like, oh man, you know, so and so I'm trying to be
- 7:16careful that I don't actually use any real life examples.
- 7:19I'm trying to find something ridiculous.
- 7:22If you're like, oh, so and so put a new wallpaper in the
- 7:27bathroom and this one has giraffes on it.
- 7:30And the old one had elephants on it.
- 7:32And you know, elephants are biblical and giraffes are the
- 7:37devil's handiwork. And so they, they switched out
- 7:40the wallpaper on me in the bathroom.
- 7:42And so I'm going to pray in a preparatory Psalm against this
- 7:45person that changed the wallpaper.
- 7:47No, stop. If you're like, they didn't
- 7:51invite me to their birthday party.
- 7:52No, that's not the kind of stuff that warrants an imprecatory
- 7:55Psalm. That's something you need to
- 7:57grow up and get over. And I can say that I'm just
- 8:00looking at Brian in the face. I know Brian is dumb.
- 8:02And there are things that I have, you know, thought or that
- 8:05I've been offended at that I had no reason to be it.
- 8:08It means nothing in the grand scheme of life.
- 8:13I tell my son often when him and his sister are, you know, kind
- 8:17of fighting and he's, you know, kind of whining a little bit.
- 8:20I'm like, hey, Brian, are you bleeding?
- 8:25And by now he's gotten so tired of me asking that because every
- 8:28time he's, well, no, I'm like, then you're OK, You're fine.
- 8:32Now, certainly I know there can actually be legitimate
- 8:36psychological harm and things that happen to people.
- 8:38So I'm not saying unless you're being physically afflicted, that
- 8:40none of your problems are really that bad.
- 8:43No, there can be legitimate mental and psychological
- 8:46hardships that happened to you. Someone could, you know, take
- 8:50away my, my family and my house and my job and my clothes and I
- 8:55could be like, well, I mean, I'm not bleeding anywhere so I guess
- 8:58I just have to be fine. No, no, it's not that at all.
- 9:01But recognize what is a legitimate problem and what is
- 9:06just our own selfishness as humans because we are selfish
- 9:11glory hogs. I was reading a quote earlier
- 9:14today by Paul David Tripp and he says that humans are great glory
- 9:19thieves. And instead of drawing the
- 9:23attention and the glory and the praise to God, we like to bring
- 9:27all the attention and glory and praise to ourselves.
- 9:30And we try and get glory from others and we make others.
- 9:35We attempt to have others follow our every whim.
- 9:39And so it is not a good thing to be a glory hawk.
- 9:45Where was I going with this? Oh, OK, in purgatory, Psalms,
- 9:48there are legitimate bad things that happen in life.
- 9:50I can think of one of my fellow church members in Washington
- 9:55state that actually just a couple years prior to my coming
- 9:59to the church, him and his wife, they had lost their son because
- 10:03he was killed by another individual.
- 10:06And so even in situations like that where there is abject hurt
- 10:10and trauma that occurs, we have a recourse in the word of God to
- 10:15call on God to execute vengeance and justice.
- 10:20This is not something we take on ourselves.
- 10:22Read the end of Romans 12, that God is the one who owns
- 10:26vengeance, but it is something that we can pray for.
- 10:29And you can read about that even in the Book of Revelation over
- 10:32and over again. You have the Saints in heaven
- 10:35asking God to execute vengeance. And so if the Saints in heaven
- 10:39can do it, then certainly the Saints here below can pray that
- 10:42as well. So let's look real quick at the
- 10:45verses and see what this has for us today.
- 10:48What can I pray? What's the mindset that I need
- 10:51to have? What what counts as something
- 10:54that I can be praying for God's vengeance on?
- 10:57And then how do I have that heart of forgiveness?
- 10:59So verses one through 4, since my youth they've often attacked
- 11:01me, LED Israel say since my youth they have often attacked
- 11:05me, but they have not prevailed against me here.
- 11:08There is recurring harm that is done many times in our lives.
- 11:15There will be people that fail us in kind of one off ways that
- 11:22it's not their regular habit. It's not, if you will quote UN
- 11:27quote who they are. It's not a volitional choice to
- 11:32be like, OK, I'm going to be Brian's nemesis.
- 11:35It just happens to be OK. This day he was talking to me.
- 11:39You know, it's kind of the, the wrong time.
- 11:41Whole bunch of bad circumstances happened.
- 11:43I had a rough day. I was super tired.
- 11:46And so I said something and I, I hurt Brian.
- 11:49Well, I could walk away from that and go, I just so loathe,
- 11:54you know, John. And so because I so loathe John
- 11:58because he said this thing, I'm going to pray an imprecatory
- 12:00prayer against him. Well, no, I think even from
- 12:03verses 1:00 and 2:00, I could see here clearly there is
- 12:06recurring action that takes place.
- 12:09So what is this recurring action that happens against Israel that
- 12:13warrants A Psalm and praying for their downfall?
- 12:16Verse 3, Plowman plowed over my back.
- 12:19They made their furrows long. Yahweh is righteous.
- 12:24He has cut the ropes of the wicked.
- 12:28Here what is being talked about is slaves that were beaten by
- 12:32their overseers and their owners creating stripes on their backs.
- 12:37So here you can think of a whip that here proverbially these
- 12:43slaves working in fields would say as I have been going through
- 12:48the field and I know like the lines that are made as a result
- 12:54of my working my back looks like that because of the harm
- 12:59inflicted on me by other people. But then I love in verse four,
- 13:04he says Yahweh is righteous like God does what is right by his
- 13:09creation and he says he has cut the ropes of the wicked.
- 13:14He says that rope that was used to whip me, now that rope has
- 13:18been cut. And so they have no more ability
- 13:22to use that instrument of unrighteousness to harm me.
- 13:28And so I'd say this is maybe another thing.
- 13:29So #1 something that, if you will, warrants an imprecation or
- 13:35prayer of vengeance from God against someone.
- 13:37Might be something that was recurring.
- 13:39Now, I'm not saying, you know, is in the one instance that I
- 13:42mentioned earlier where a man took the life of another man
- 13:47might say, OK, well, that wasn't ongoing.
- 13:48Yeah, but that had really ongoing consequences.
- 13:52I think for many people that have endured abuse specifically
- 13:57like physical or perhaps sexual abuse, that it might not be
- 14:01something that happened very recurringly, but when it
- 14:05happened has literally caused a physical reaction a a mental
- 14:11bookmarking of that time that doesn't really go away.
- 14:15And when you enter into high US environments, thousand different
- 14:19things, those memories, those emotions come flooding back in
- 14:23and you might struggle with anxiety or panic that just keeps
- 14:28recurring within your life. And I love here, verse four,
- 14:32that as we're praying for God to have vengeance, one of those
- 14:36ways that we can pray is God make it so that they are
- 14:39incapable of perpetrating this further, that you would cut off
- 14:45the instrument of their harming. As the Christian standard Bible
- 14:51study Bible phrases it, the Lord will prevent the wicked from
- 14:54harming his people by eliminating the weapons used to
- 14:59force submission. And so this is something that we
- 15:03can pray and we say, God, would you please make it so that this
- 15:07person no longer, you know, has access to this or that?
- 15:14Would you make it so that this person that is abusing, that
- 15:17they have no more access to anyone else that they could
- 15:20abuse, You know, God, for this person that killed, would you
- 15:24help them to be jailed correctly and for the right amount of time
- 15:31that they would not take anyone else's life?
- 15:34And so you can pray in vengeance.
- 15:36God, you see what this recurring action has been, or you've seen
- 15:39what this action with recurring consequences has done.
- 15:43And so, God, would you eliminate their ability to do evil?
- 15:47Verse #5 let all who hate Zion be driven back in disgrace.
- 15:51Here there's a malintent. That is a person that wants to
- 15:56do harm. It's a person that wants to do
- 15:59evil for people in our lives that do genuinely love us and
- 16:05care about us and yet fail us. We ought to have a heart that
- 16:11wants to go towards forgiveness that we would say, I know that
- 16:14you love me. And so as a result, I might not
- 16:18give you all the access before that you had to me.
- 16:21You know, you've you've misused my finances a whole bunch.
- 16:25So I'm not going to lend you any more money, but I love you.
- 16:29And so I'm going to work to have like this restoration of
- 16:33relationship and and love and communication, even if there
- 16:38have to be some boundaries set up here.
- 16:41These people do not love. There is no care at all there.
- 16:46It's a desire to inflict harm. And very unfortunately, there
- 16:49are people like that in our world.
- 16:52And even as I say that many of you are like, yeah, I know.
- 16:56And those might be ones that we say, God, either I need you to
- 17:01execute vengeance on them, or I need you to do the like soul to
- 17:05Paul thing on them so that they've become my brother or
- 17:08sister in the Lord. Because otherwise, you know, I,
- 17:11I need you to do one of those two options.
- 17:13So I just do that for me, God. But that can be another filter
- 17:17that we have for when we're praying an imprecation, when
- 17:21we're praying for God's vengeance.
- 17:23Verse number six, Let them be like grass on the rooftops,
- 17:26which Withers before it grows up and can't even fill the hands of
- 17:29the Reaper or the arms of the one who binds sheeps here on the
- 17:35rooftops. This doesn't make a whole lot of
- 17:37sense to us because we've all got sloped rooftops.
- 17:40Well, in Israel they would have flat rooftops and because of
- 17:44the, you know, building materials of the time,
- 17:46occasionally, you know, you might get some seeds or whatever
- 17:49that kind of pop up a little bit of grass on the roof, but it
- 17:53doesn't have, you know, it's not being regularly watered.
- 17:57It can't draw up water from the soil.
- 18:01And so and the sun beats down on it like really hard.
- 18:05And so the grass would just wither and, and dry away.
- 18:09And so there's no lasting impact, if you will.
- 18:13This is praying God allow their evil actions, allow their living
- 18:23in wickedness to pass away, to pass away quickly that this
- 18:28would not be a long lasting thing if you will Lord make
- 18:33their time of evil. Be sure I think for those that
- 18:37that perpetrate abuse that this would certainly be a worthy
- 18:41prayer to be like all right, God I I'm asking because I know that
- 18:45I suffered or I know that my loved one suffered.
- 18:48Would you make it so that this person is quickly off the scene
- 18:52with their evil so that it won't be you know 23510 more people
- 18:58whose lives are impacted as a result of this God dry them up,
- 19:02send them out then verse #8 then none who passed by will say may
- 19:08always blessing be on you. We bless you in the name of
- 19:10Yahweh here. It's there's not a friendly
- 19:15formal greeting here that takes place.
- 19:18They're not going to be blessed. There's not even going to be a
- 19:21statement of like, you know, God bless you.
- 19:23Have a great day. Because no one's going, all
- 19:27right, yes, you're this murderer or this here, you know, abusive
- 19:32slaver or something. No one's going to be like, oh,
- 19:34God bless you, if you will. There is public knowledge of the
- 19:39evil private actions God may their evil be shown so that
- 19:45everyone knows and that there would be open public shame for
- 19:53their wrongs that they have committed.
- 19:56That is a that is a big prayer. That is a prayer that is good to
- 20:01pray Here. It's outlined for us kind of
- 20:03step by step of, you know, consistent actions or actions
- 20:08that have recurring consequences.
- 20:11You have those that are inflicting harm.
- 20:15You're asking that God would make it so that they are unable
- 20:19to continue perpetrating that evil.
- 20:22That these are people that they have the intent to harm.
- 20:26You are asking that God would help their if you will reign of
- 20:30evil, reign of terror to end quickly.
- 20:33That it would just be passing. That there would not be a a
- 20:37taking down of roots so that it continues for much longer and
- 20:43instead they are shown publicly to be evil and wrong and that
- 20:52there would be shame as a result of it.
- 20:56That's a crazy that that's not something as I even or it was
- 21:01like, all right, I'm going to record a couple episodes tonight
- 21:03of Tabernacle talk. That wasn't something that I was
- 21:05like, I really hope I learned this, but I'm glad that God's
- 21:09word speaks into my life and your life that it even gives us
- 21:13illustrations of. Here is how you pray for what
- 21:17you're not even sure that you can pray for.
- 21:20Now, as I mentioned, any evil human can be turned into a child
- 21:26of God through the work of Jesus and his Holy Spirit that
- 21:30transforms us. So I can pray God either save
- 21:34them or judge them and I want them to be saved.
- 21:38That's the part of being a Christian is you adopt the mind
- 21:41of Jesus, which is I want their salvation.
- 21:44I want them to experience life in Christ.
- 21:47I don't want them to experience, if you will, the judgment of God
- 21:51now and forever. I want them to experience the
- 21:55life of forgive, forgiveness and freedom that I've experienced.
- 21:59So that's our prayer is God. I want you to save them.
- 22:05If they are not one that will be saved, then God, I'm asking for
- 22:11you to execute vengeance. And frankly, I'll, I'll put it
- 22:15this way as well, knowing some of the stories of people in
- 22:19Scripture that did know the Lord and yet sometimes walked in sin
- 22:24and wrong. We would not be out of bounds to
- 22:28also sometimes be praying for vengeance against even those
- 22:32that might truly know the Lord might be saved.
- 22:36But they are acting in such a way that is loudly declaring
- 22:41Jesus, at least as of this moment, is not my Lord.
- 22:45I am not submitted to him. And it might be that through the
- 22:50unveiling of their sin, even through something, you know,
- 22:53like church discipline or like being arrested, that they might
- 22:58come to their senses and go, oh, man, I have been so off base.
- 23:03I've been, you know, like Peter betraying Christ and I have to
- 23:09return to Jesus. And it might be good for them.
- 23:12So that's it. Pray preparatory vengeance
- 23:18filled prayers against people with the caveats.
- 23:24Love them like Jesus loves them. But then also recognize that God
- 23:28gives us these words in Scripture for a reason.
- 23:32And you can claim them. And for those that have had
- 23:35tremendous evil perpetrated against them, this might be like
- 23:39the balm of God to your soul that you're able to say God
- 23:45sees, he knows, and he is not OK with the thing that I'm not OK
- 23:50with because it goes against his design and his will.
- 23:53Thank you for tuning in today. I hope that this was an
- 23:56encouragement to you. I'd love to hear from you if you
- 23:58have any other thoughts or things that would be a a great
- 24:02blessing me, but see you next time in Psalm 130.
