Transcript
- Lucas: Luna, welcome back. Ready to ask some questions? Luna: Always! I love asking questions. But in Dutch, I'm still a bit lost. Lucas: That's exactly what we'll fix today. We're learning question words: wie, wat, waar. Luna: Wie, wat, waar. Those sound like the basics. Lucas: They are. Let's start with 'wie' — that means 'who'. Repeat after me: wie. Luna: Wie. Lucas: Perfect. Now a full question: Wie ben jij? That's 'Who are you?' Say it with me: Wie ben jij? Luna: Wie ben jij? That's a good one to know. Lucas: Exactly. Now you try asking me: Wie ben jij? Luna: Wie ben jij? Lucas: Ik ben Lucas. See how that works? Now 'wat' — meaning 'what'. Wat is dit? Luna: Wat is dit? So if I point at something, I can ask that. Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice. Imagine I'm holding a book. Ask me what it is. Luna: Wat is dit? Lucas: Dat is een boek. Good. Now 'waar' — 'where'. Waar woon jij? Luna: Waar woon jij? That's 'Where do you live?' Lucas: Yes. Can you answer that for yourself? Luna: Uhh... Ik woon in Amsterdam. But is that right? Lucas: Perfect. Now let's combine them. I'll ask you a question with 'wie', and you answer. Luna: Okay, hit me. Lucas: Wie is dat? Pointing at someone. Luna: Dat is mijn vriend. Wait — how do I say 'friend'? Lucas: Vriend. But you already said it right: Dat is mijn vriend. Great job. Luna: Oh cool! So 'wie' for people, 'wat' for things, 'waar' for places. Lucas: You've got it. Now one more: Wat doe je? That's 'What are you doing?' Luna: Wat doe je? I can ask that to a friend. Lucas: Exactly. Let's do a quick scene. I'll be a stranger, you ask me who I am. Luna: Wie ben jij? Lucas: Ik ben Lucas. En jij? Wat doe je? Luna: Ik leer Nederlands. That's what I'm doing! Lucas: Perfect. Now let's switch. You point at a lamp and ask what it is. Luna: Wat is dit? Lucas: Dat is een lamp. And where is it? Waar is de lamp? Luna: De lamp is op de tafel. Oh, I used 'waar' naturally! Lucas: You did. That's fantastic. So let's review the three words: wie, wat, waar. Luna: Wie, wat, waar. Who, what, where. Lucas: And the full questions: Wie ben jij? Wat is dit? Waar woon jij? Wie is dat? Wat doe je? Luna: That's a lot of questions. But I think I can handle them. Lucas: You can. And you'll hear them all the time in Dutch conversations. Luna: I'm going to start asking everyone wie, wat, waar. They'll think I'm a detective. Lucas: A Dutch detective. I like that. Now, before we go further, I want to say something. Luna: Sure, what is it? Lucas: If Fexingo has been helping you make progress with Dutch, and today's episode was worth a coffee to you, you can support us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it really helps keep the show ad-free and going. We appreciate it a lot. Lucas: Alright, back to questions. Let's practice 'waar' one more time with a place. Luna: Waar is het station? I need to know that for real life. Lucas: Het station is daar. See, you're already using it. Luna: This is so useful. I feel like I can actually ask for directions now. Lucas: You can. And you can ask about people and things too. Let's do a final round of repetition. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Lucas: Repeat after me: Wie ben jij? Luna: Wie ben jij? Lucas: Wat is dit? Luna: Wat is dit? Lucas: Waar woon jij? Luna: Waar woon jij? Lucas: Wie is dat? Luna: Wie is dat? Lucas: Wat doe je? Luna: Wat doe je? Lucas: Perfect. Now you have five powerful questions to use. Luna: I'm going to practice these all week. Thanks Lucas! Lucas: You're welcome. Keep asking questions, and we'll see you next time on Learn Dutch with Fexingo. Luna: Doei! Lucas: Doei!
