Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Okay, Shano. Thanks for coming in here. Husker Buzz time.
- 0:03Speaker 1: You played football. You've seen football. You know football. It's
- 0:07Speaker 1: fourth and nine at your 44-yard line. You're down three
- 0:10Speaker 1: with four and a half minutes to go. You got
- 0:12Speaker 1: two timeouts. You got the two-minute warning and the wind
- 0:14Speaker 1: at your back. What analytics says it's a good idea
- 0:18Speaker 1: to go for it?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Well, the ones that Nebraska is tied into and I
- 0:24Speaker 2: don't know if the wind's a factor there, too, knowing
- 0:26Speaker 2: that for Indiana, where Nebraska was at, they were going
- 0:29Speaker 2: to have to get over a certain amount of yards
- 0:31Speaker 2: to get a field goal because they would have been
- 0:34Speaker 2: kicking into a pretty stiff wind. But, yeah, it was
- 0:36Speaker 2: kind of one of those decisions that they took a
- 0:40Speaker 2: chance on, wanting to put the ball in Calandra's hand
- 0:44Speaker 2: in that situation. But definitely one you can be critical about.
- 0:47Speaker 2: There's no doubt about it.
- 0:48Speaker 3: It was very, very strange.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Because a lot of people wonder if Matt Rule knows
- 0:54Speaker 1: what he's doing on the sidelines. Clock management, game management,
- 0:58Speaker 1: use of timeouts. And I just recall watching Bill Callahan
- 1:02Speaker 1: in practice and how in control Bill Callahan was in practice.
- 1:05Speaker 1: But I don't think he was a very good in-game coach.
- 1:08Speaker 1: I think he made decisions on the sidelines in the
- 1:11Speaker 1: heat of the moment that were not wise. I don't
- 1:14Speaker 1: know if that's the problem with Matt Rule, but it
- 1:17Speaker 1: does not engender confidence from the fans.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Again, the analytics situations, they come at you fast in
- 1:28Speaker 2: the game. You've got to make these decisions. You've got
- 1:30Speaker 2: to use timeouts when you think they're necessary. You've got
- 1:33Speaker 2: to be smart with the usage of your timeouts. If
- 1:37Speaker 2: they get it, I think you're like, wow, that's what
- 1:39Speaker 2: you've got to do to beat a team like Indiana.
- 1:41Speaker 2: But if they don't, this is what we're talking about
- 1:43Speaker 2: right now. It's a tough position to be a head coach.
- 1:47Speaker 2: to make these decisions on the fly and hell of
- 1:49Speaker 2: a lot easier for you and I right now to
- 1:51Speaker 2: say it was the wrong decision. But I think you
- 1:55Speaker 2: can go either way on that. I understood it to
- 1:58Speaker 2: some extent because of the way the wind was playing.
- 2:02Speaker 2: There was no guarantee you were going to stop Indiana either.
- 2:06Speaker 2: You may not have been able to stop their offense
- 2:10Speaker 2: at that point, so they wanted to keep the ball
- 2:12Speaker 2: in Calandra's hand.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Well, it's the kind of thing that you're going to
- 2:15Speaker 1: have to prove to a lot of fans by outcoaching
- 2:19Speaker 1: somebody to get them to forget stuff like this.
- 2:21Speaker 3: See what happens on Saturday at Oregon.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Now, the other big issue in regard to this game
- 2:27Speaker 1: involves Dante Moore, the All-America quarterback of Oregon.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Now, it's been two weeks.
- 2:32Speaker 1: It'll be two weeks since his injury in the USC game.
- 2:36Speaker 3: It was a serious injury. He was taken off the
- 2:38Speaker 3: field on a gurney.
- 2:40Speaker 1: But the concussion protocol typically doesn't last that long or
- 2:43Speaker 1: much longer. Is it your impression that he may be saying,
- 2:47Speaker 1: you know, I don't really want to risk another injury
- 2:50Speaker 1: before the NFL draft, that he may just shut it
- 2:52Speaker 1: down the rest of the year?
- 2:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it's hard to tell with the severity of concussions
- 2:57Speaker 2: because the one that he suffered was pretty significant. And,
- 3:00Speaker 2: you know, you hear of guys that, you know, there's
- 3:03Speaker 2: lingering effects for weeks if they take a pretty bad one.
- 3:07Speaker 2: I mean, there's been some players here in the past
- 3:09Speaker 2: on defense years ago, I can't remember exactly, where they'd
- 3:12Speaker 2: be out several weeks from the head injury and their
- 3:15Speaker 2: head still hurts days, weeks later. And I'm sure he's
- 3:19Speaker 2: being smart because it is his future. But we'll get
- 3:22Speaker 2: that first injury report Wednesday, whether he's questionable, probable, doubtful,
- 3:26Speaker 2: et cetera. We'll get a good read on what their
- 3:30Speaker 2: quarterback room is. But for Oregon, it's kind of an advantage.
- 3:33Speaker 2: They can say we're getting all three ready to play.
- 3:36Speaker 2: And so if you're Nebraska, you have to prepare for
- 3:38Speaker 2: three different types of quarterbacks.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Yep. Did you get the impression watching Dylan Raiola more
- 3:43Speaker 1: closely than most people that he may not have what
- 3:47Speaker 1: it takes in games? That performance against UCLA, and I'm
- 3:52Speaker 1: talking mentally, not physically, that game against UCLA was one
- 3:55Speaker 1: of the worst performances in college football over the last
- 3:58Speaker 1: two years. Insight us on what you think Dylan Raiola, composition-wise,
- 4:04Speaker 1: is mentally.
- 4:04Speaker 3: As a quarterback.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Well, I just think his confidence at times going in
- 4:09Speaker 2: the pocket Like instead of stepping up into clean pockets,
- 4:13Speaker 2: he likes to get 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage. And,
- 4:16Speaker 2: you know, then the defensive ends at better angles to
- 4:20Speaker 2: sack him. And, you know, he's kind of running around
- 4:23Speaker 2: throwing off his back foot. And we saw that Saturday
- 4:25Speaker 2: a few times where he just does not play up
- 4:29Speaker 2: in the pocket, does not play the pocket correctly, where,
- 4:32Speaker 2: you know, the defensive ends go back to the Minnesota
- 4:35Speaker 2: game when they had nine sacks. That never should have happened.
- 4:38Speaker 2: with nine sacks in a football game. The game was
- 4:39Speaker 2: like 60, 56, 60 snaps, and nine of them were sacks.
- 4:44Speaker 2: But a lot of it is how you play the
- 4:45Speaker 2: pocket and the position. You saw that in that game
- 4:49Speaker 2: against UCLA where he was backpedaling and throwing off his
- 4:52Speaker 2: back foot, especially the one that basically pulled him from
- 4:56Speaker 2: the game.
- 4:57Speaker 1: We've got a few seconds left. Do you think he'll
- 4:58Speaker 1: start on Saturday, or will they go the number three guy?
- 5:02Speaker 2: I think they'll go with the other guy. That's my feel.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Unless Dante Moore's back, obviously that changes everything. But the
- 5:10Speaker 2: other guy that came in late looked pretty good.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Tell the fumble.
- 5:13Speaker 2: It's rare to get to a third quarterback in the
- 5:15Speaker 2: game now these days and have the third guy look
- 5:17Speaker 2: pretty capable.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Yeah, he had them driving until they fumbled on fourth
- 5:20Speaker 1: and one. All right, Shano, thanks. We'll talk to you tomorrow.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Husker Buzz reported 647 on 1110 KFB. Tomorrow will be
- 5:27Speaker 1: injury report day in the Big Ten Conference. We'll get
- 5:30Speaker 1: an update on Jameer Khan and Riley Van Poppel and
- 5:33Speaker 1: Rex Guthrie for Nebraska.
