- 0:11This is my Chicken coop and I come out here.
- 0:13Every day to record a podcast to.
- 0:15Teach distinctions, possibilities, new ways of
- 0:18thinking, and just bring some joy.
- 0:20Into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey, everybody. Good morning.
- 0:30Let's talk negative self talk today because it happens
- 0:34non-stop in our heads and we don't really even pay attention
- 0:37to it. We are so desensitized to what
- 0:39we say to ourselves that we have very little awareness of it.
- 0:45Half the time it's popping up and we don't even pay attention
- 0:47to it. It's just so normal to us to
- 0:49have it. So right now, I want you to stop
- 0:52and pause. And I want you to think about
- 0:54how many times in a day do you get annoyed with yourself?
- 0:57Do you chastise yourself? Do you say things that are very
- 1:01clearly things that you should not necessarily say to yourself,
- 1:06yet you are, Yet you're saying these negative things to
- 1:09yourself. You're engaged in a, in a full
- 1:12conversation in your head. These things can look like very
- 1:16benign. They can look like they're very
- 1:18simple, but they do a ton of damage because you're not giving
- 1:22yourself that that awareness that those things beat you up,
- 1:28whether you're saying them to yourself or someone else is
- 1:30saying them to you. It's definitely a thing that
- 1:33that happens in our minds and that negativity is, in my
- 1:39opinion, it's worse when it comes from us over and over
- 1:43because it's very covert, it's very behind the scenes and we
- 1:46are not aware of it. So give you a good example.
- 1:49If you think you suck at something, then you and you and
- 1:53you don't want to suck at that thing, especially if you don't
- 1:56want to suck at it, it and you start telling yourself that over
- 1:59and over and over again. You create that that self talk
- 2:03that goes on and on about your not being good at something and
- 2:05then that becomes your identity. So I'm going to use myself as an
- 2:08example because it's always the easiest way to go about this
- 2:12when it comes to cooking. I have never been.
- 2:16I was never the person that was taught to cook when I was
- 2:19little. My mother cooked, but she had
- 2:21her specific meals, let's just say it that way.
- 2:24She had her specific meals that she would make, but I don't
- 2:27think she ever loved cooking and I think she always struggled
- 2:30with it and she never really learned it.
- 2:32And nothing was ever like out of the park.
- 2:34Oh, that's delicious. It was food and my dad brought a
- 2:38lot of take home. I like that's just the truth.
- 2:41We had a lot of take out because he just, I don't think he really
- 2:44loved her food. And like I, I don't remember
- 2:47having a Thanksgiving or a Christmas where the entire meal
- 2:50came out all at the same time. And my mom would get very
- 2:54frustrated. My dad would get very
- 2:56frustrated. The Turkey wasn't done, the
- 2:57vegetables were done. It was always chaos and one of
- 3:02the things that I did not learn in that house growing up, while
- 3:06I had AI mean a super loving house growing up, it was I did
- 3:11not learn about food and how to cook food.
- 3:14So I gravitated more to the solution that my dad had, which
- 3:18was I'll just grab stuff out. So I would go to the grocery
- 3:21store and I was on my own. I would buy things that were
- 3:25already prepared. I would keep things simple.
- 3:27I'm an outstanding sandwich maker.
- 3:30Like that is something that I learned to make all kinds of
- 3:33really cool sandwiches. Like my sandwiches I know are
- 3:37out of the park. Everyone says it.
- 3:39Well, I poured into that because sandwiches are easier, easier to
- 3:43make. But then as time went on, I
- 3:46really wanted to get better at cooking.
- 3:48I went to Rhode Island school of design had these like off
- 3:52classes where you could take them for learning how to cook.
- 3:55And I went to six week cooking programs multiple times to learn
- 3:59how to do things to break my pattern because in my mind I
- 4:03would always say, well, I suck at cooking, I suck at cooking, I
- 4:06suck at cooking. Like that was my my mantra,
- 4:09which became my identity. So those words matter because it
- 4:12became my identity. Because if someone ever said,
- 4:14well, let's cook dinner, I'd be like, well, I don't cook like
- 4:16it. Immediately.
- 4:17That was my response because that self talk, that non-stop
- 4:21self talk of like what wasn't good, negative self talk was
- 4:26taking over. Now here's the here's the
- 4:28reality. I love following patterns.
- 4:31I love following rules. So recipes are rules.
- 4:34So you follow the recipe. There's no rocket science here,
- 4:38my friends. It's follow the recipe.
- 4:40So why did I come up with this identity that I sucked at it?
- 4:44Because there are recipe books everywhere, everywhere.
- 4:47And when I take out a recipe book and I use the recipe book,
- 4:51I have evidence that I don't suck at cooking.
- 4:55Or I can look at that and go, well, that's just a recipe.
- 4:59I can't wing it. So then I can go back to that
- 5:01identity, which means this negative self talk 1 as opposed
- 5:05to just saying, well, no, following somebody else's trial
- 5:10and error is smart. It means I don't have to suffer
- 5:13the pain. You see how this can work in
- 5:16your head where you've got to grab those things and shift that
- 5:19language and shift that pattern so that you can fix it.
- 5:22That's what I'm talking about. So take a look at the negative
- 5:25self talk that goes on. Really be honest with yourself
- 5:28about it like that. Like just because I'm following
- 5:31a recipe doesn't mean I can't cook.
- 5:33What it means is I'm smart enough to go out and say, ah,
- 5:36you paved this path. I'm going to take that path.
- 5:39Very similar to when the the people were moving across the
- 5:44country and everyone was taking wagon trains.
- 5:46Those wagon trains went on a path that was already blazed.
- 5:50They didn't go and start it themselves, the original ones
- 5:52did. But once that was done, they
- 5:54stuck to the path. So we can learn from this my
- 5:58friends. So listen.
- 6:00Looking for the recipe books, see it.
- 6:02Find those negative self talk patterns and change them.
- 6:08Don't let them take over because that changes everything.
- 6:12All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I'll
- 6:14see you tomorrow. Bye.
