- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. This episode number two d and
- 0:19Speaker 1: twenty seven and Tana show we're setting the stage for
- 0:22Speaker 1: the next few months as Dan, Spencer Burder and myself
- 0:27Speaker 1: breakdown our plans and goals and hopes and hit lists
- 0:31Speaker 1: for the two eighteen hunting season. And big thank you
- 0:48Speaker 1: to Lacrosse Boots for the support of this episode of
- 0:52Speaker 1: the podcast. As I've mentioned before, I've been wearing a
- 0:55Speaker 1: Cross boots for fifteen almost twenty years now for all
- 1:00Speaker 1: my white tail hunting, and this year I'm wearing the
- 1:03Speaker 1: new pair of Alpha Burley Pros and I just got
- 1:07Speaker 1: these in the mail recently. I'm looking at them right now,
- 1:09Speaker 1: holding them actually in and I decided to kind of
- 1:12Speaker 1: go throwback with it this year. You know, over the
- 1:14Speaker 1: past few years, I've been wearing the camouflage versions, but
- 1:17Speaker 1: this one I've got the old green and yellow Lacrosse
- 1:22Speaker 1: boot and there's something about that classic look. That was
- 1:25Speaker 1: the very first pair I ever saw when my uncle
- 1:28Speaker 1: first got Lacrosse as he had the green and yellow boots.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Now I've got those two. It's kind of cool how
- 1:34Speaker 1: it's coming full circle. As I've mentioned, these boots are
- 1:38Speaker 1: ultra comfortable. They worked great from early season all the
- 1:41Speaker 1: way through the late I'm going to be wearing these
- 1:43Speaker 1: four Montana white tail hunting in September. I will be
- 1:46Speaker 1: wearing them in Minnesota and the Boundary Waters. I will
- 1:49Speaker 1: be wearing them here in Michigan in late December. Their waterproof,
- 1:54Speaker 1: they keep you warm. They're about is sent freeze you
- 1:56Speaker 1: can get, and they worked just great for a lot
- 1:59Speaker 1: of white tail applications. So if you're interested in learning
- 2:02Speaker 1: more about Lacrosse boots for yourself, you can visit Lacrosse
- 2:05Speaker 1: Footwear dot com. All right, welcome to the Wired to
- 2:09Speaker 1: Hunt podcast, brought to you by Onyx and today the show,
- 2:14Speaker 1: I gotta say, we have got an all star cast
- 2:17Speaker 1: for you. We have here on one side of the ring,
- 2:21Speaker 1: the nine fingered Wonder from Another Mother, Dan Johnson. On
- 2:25Speaker 1: the other side, we've got the one and only Further Hilliard,
- 2:29Speaker 1: Regional director for the q D May and then the
- 2:32Speaker 1: fourth man in this four way is the bearded baritone
- 2:36Speaker 1: from South Dakota Spencer New Hearth. So we got a
- 2:41Speaker 1: crowded house here today, but with hunting seasons a few
- 2:45Speaker 1: weeks weeks away for all of us, I think, or
- 2:46Speaker 1: most of at least, I figured we had to get
- 2:49Speaker 1: back to doing our annual goals, hopes and hit lists podcast.
- 2:54Speaker 1: You know we're you know, don't you remember doing these? Probably?
- 2:57Speaker 1: I think we did our first three years, maybe missed
- 2:59Speaker 1: it last year. Does that sound right? Do you remember that? Man?
- 3:02Speaker 1: We've we've done it every single year, so yeah, maybe
- 3:05Speaker 1: we did every single year. Basically, what I want to
- 3:07Speaker 1: do is we're gonna talk through, you know, what our
- 3:09Speaker 1: plans are for the year, what our hopes and goals
- 3:12Speaker 1: are for the year, talk through if there's any like
- 3:14Speaker 1: specific deer we're after or any specific things we're trying
- 3:18Speaker 1: to achieve. Kind of set the stage, um, because you know,
- 3:21Speaker 1: each year you get to follow along with what I'm
- 3:23Speaker 1: doing and what Dan's doing, and you know, Josh and Spencer,
- 3:27Speaker 1: you guys are more and more involved. I want to
- 3:29Speaker 1: kind of share what all of us are up to,
- 3:31Speaker 1: what we've got coming down the road. Um, and then
- 3:34Speaker 1: you know, two months from now, three months from now,
- 3:36Speaker 1: when we're talking in November December. Everyone can laugh at
- 3:39Speaker 1: us when they hear how widely or how wildly we
- 3:42Speaker 1: failed in achieving all these goals. Um, so that's what
- 3:45Speaker 1: I feared we could do. And Uh, I don't know, Dan,
- 3:48Speaker 1: are you up for that? I'm always up for it. Mark,
- 3:51Speaker 1: That's what I like about you. So I want to
- 3:55Speaker 1: I want to talk to you real quick, Dan, because
- 3:59Speaker 1: a few weeks ago, like a month ago or so,
- 4:02Speaker 1: you had we kind of did like a little bit
- 4:04Speaker 1: of preview to this kind of thing because you would
- 4:06Speaker 1: have gone out and you put your trail cameras out
- 4:08Speaker 1: for the first time, and I kind of bugged you
- 4:10Speaker 1: a little bit about what your goals were, what you
- 4:12Speaker 1: might be after, and you said that this year you
- 4:14Speaker 1: were going to be after two bucks. I think if
- 4:17Speaker 1: I remember what you talked, there's like two deer you
- 4:18Speaker 1: really wanted to possibly like focus on this year. One
- 4:22Speaker 1: of them was this deer you called dork. Um. I
- 4:26Speaker 1: saw number one you've checked your summer trail cameras. Number two,
- 4:30Speaker 1: as I am every year, I don't like you very
- 4:33Speaker 1: much because how great those trail came polls were. And uh,
- 4:37Speaker 1: and number three I did see the Dork's back. So
- 4:40Speaker 1: can you fill us in on how the rest of
- 4:41Speaker 1: the poll went and what you learned about that old buck? Yeah,
- 4:45Speaker 1: I mean, I'll tell you what um. In regards to
- 4:47Speaker 1: that specific buck, I got daylight pictures of him, which
- 4:51Speaker 1: is which never happens. The very first ever picture I
- 4:57Speaker 1: had of him, which I'm mixed, I was expecting him
- 4:59Speaker 1: to be a three year old in that picture was
- 5:01Speaker 1: a daylight picture. UM. And this last card pool, which
- 5:07Speaker 1: was what now going on two weeks or a week
- 5:09Speaker 1: and a half ago. UM, I ended up getting more
- 5:13Speaker 1: daylight pictures of him. However, you know that transition hits,
- 5:18Speaker 1: they come out of velvet and he I catch him
- 5:22Speaker 1: on a different part of the area in a different
- 5:26Speaker 1: form that I can hunt, and uh it's just one
- 5:29Speaker 1: of those things, man, where he goes nocturnal and he
- 5:31Speaker 1: only visits the areas that UM I hunt, or at
- 5:36Speaker 1: least through trail cameras, uh as when it's uh not
- 5:40Speaker 1: when it's nighttime. So it's very difficult for me to
- 5:43Speaker 1: get him pegged down. It's almost like I need about
- 5:46Speaker 1: fifty more trail cameras to just code, you know, make
- 5:49Speaker 1: these giant, impassable nets that he has to walk through
- 5:54Speaker 1: and I'll get pictures of him. But until I do that,
- 5:58Speaker 1: it's one of those games that I just don't think
- 6:01Speaker 1: he's killable on the properties that I hunt. What was
- 6:04Speaker 1: his activity on the pictures this year in daylight? Was
- 6:07Speaker 1: that on par with past years or was this like
- 6:10Speaker 1: the first time he's been daylight since that very first year? Yeah,
- 6:13Speaker 1: very first time daylight period, so he or I mean
- 6:19Speaker 1: aside from the first year, right so, um so between
- 6:23Speaker 1: two thousand and what thirteen to two thousand and eighteen? Now, uh,
- 6:28Speaker 1: I have to sets of daylight pictures of him and
- 6:32Speaker 1: that's it. Wow. So my farm is not his core
- 6:36Speaker 1: area right now in the summer though, is it a
- 6:40Speaker 1: lot of pictures in the summer, Like, is it his
- 6:42Speaker 1: core summer area. I wouldn't say it's his core summer area.
- 6:46Speaker 1: He comes through on maybe a once every through week rotation.
- 6:51Speaker 1: So take that with a grain of salt. So if
- 6:56Speaker 1: this year you are sitting in one of your stands
- 7:00Speaker 1: in November and Dork comes walking by, but then right
- 7:04Speaker 1: behind him is you know, because because Dork's a big
- 7:08Speaker 1: bodied old buck, but he you know, not a whole
- 7:10Speaker 1: lot as far as his antlers. Um So, if dork's
- 7:14Speaker 1: in front of you, but then like a Boone and Crockett,
- 7:17Speaker 1: four year old comes walking behind him and they're both
- 7:20Speaker 1: standing right in front of you. Do you shoot like
- 7:22Speaker 1: the nine year old Dirk or do you shoot the
- 7:23Speaker 1: four year old bigger racked buck. If I knew I
- 7:27Speaker 1: wasn't gonna get busted and I had the wind, I'd
- 7:30Speaker 1: probably Dude. I hate questions like this because the you know,
- 7:35Speaker 1: if I say, oh, I'm gonna shoot the older buck,
- 7:37Speaker 1: there's a group of people that are like, oh, that's bullshit.
- 7:39Speaker 1: He don't you know, he says that now. But you know,
- 7:42Speaker 1: the big buck he'll you know, he'll go after the
- 7:44Speaker 1: bigger score. But if I had, if I had to
- 7:46Speaker 1: choose between him, I would say I would shoot the
- 7:48Speaker 1: nine year old or the eight year old, you know
- 7:50Speaker 1: what I mean? So I dude, he's like three hundred pounds,
- 7:55Speaker 1: he's got he's massive. He's only going to score like
- 7:58Speaker 1: one forty maybe, but he's got really big, thick brow
- 8:04Speaker 1: times he's got masks all the way out to his tips,
- 8:06Speaker 1: and he's you just look at a picture of him
- 8:09Speaker 1: and you think of a pit bull. And now it's
- 8:11Speaker 1: to the point where I bet you, I bet you
- 8:14Speaker 1: he's still three three pounds, but his back end is
- 8:19Speaker 1: starting to shrink a little bit. You'll get that with
- 8:21Speaker 1: these older bucks where he starts to look like a triangle.
- 8:24Speaker 1: The front end is so thick and it just kind
- 8:27Speaker 1: of tapers off because they their hips start to sink in.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Their gut comes way up into their into their chest
- 8:34Speaker 1: and uh or into their back their back quarter and
- 8:38Speaker 1: it just looks like a pit bull and uh, I
- 8:42Speaker 1: don't know, man, that to me is just as impressive
- 8:45Speaker 1: as a booner on your wall. Yeah, that would be
- 8:48Speaker 1: pretty awesome to get a chance of buck like that.
- 8:51Speaker 1: I can't even imagine seeing a nine year old buck
- 8:55Speaker 1: in Michigan. That's like the equivalent of like a two
- 8:58Speaker 1: year old run. That's an old one. So check this out.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Though I have. I found a pair of a matching
- 9:05Speaker 1: set of sheds in about I think it was one
- 9:11Speaker 1: point from a straight line from where I found the
- 9:13Speaker 1: sheds to where I got this trail camera picture one
- 9:15Speaker 1: point five miles away. And I'm not joking. I think
- 9:22Speaker 1: I have another eight or nine year old buck to
- 9:25Speaker 1: a pair of um an eleven point buck um that
- 9:28Speaker 1: I found a matching set to in two thousand thirteen.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Who was on my trail camera this year? Hold on,
- 9:36Speaker 1: so you're saying you have a match set of antlers
- 9:39Speaker 1: from two thousand thirteen, ye that you think belonged to
- 9:42Speaker 1: a deer you have on camera this year? Absolutely, yep.
- 9:47Speaker 1: And he is a big bodied, mature looking, big head,
- 9:52Speaker 1: big front end. Uh you know, kind of that pit
- 9:55Speaker 1: bull look again. And he's another three pound buck that
- 10:00Speaker 1: would probably score I mean, he's he's got to love
- 10:02Speaker 1: and scorable points. Maybe put him in the low low,
- 10:06Speaker 1: low one fifties. But he's just an old buck. And
- 10:11Speaker 1: you can tell by their coat and by their face
- 10:13Speaker 1: and by their head that he is he's he's it.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I mean, that would be another buck that I would
- 10:19Speaker 1: love to harvest. But this is the first year I've
- 10:21Speaker 1: ever got trail camera pictures of him, so you know, uh, nope,
- 10:26Speaker 1: never seen him. Man. So so what about the rest
- 10:30Speaker 1: of your camera pool? Any other shooters? Oh? Yeah, I
- 10:33Speaker 1: mean I got I got a handful of uh four
- 10:37Speaker 1: year olds, five year olds, you know, up until these
- 10:40Speaker 1: guys at the higher age range. But uh, you know
- 10:43Speaker 1: it's over the years, I used to get really excited
- 10:45Speaker 1: this time of year. Obviously the tjoil camera pictures are
- 10:48Speaker 1: awesome to look at, but as we all know, getting
- 10:51Speaker 1: trail camera pictures is the easy part. And I have
- 10:55Speaker 1: two big things that play here. One is the September
- 10:58Speaker 1: shift and the other is the harvest. Right, so when
- 11:03Speaker 1: the crop, when the crop harvest, so when the you know,
- 11:09Speaker 1: the velvet comes off, they all start jocking for position.
- 11:14Speaker 1: There's a displacement, you know, the mature bucks all plan
- 11:17Speaker 1: a stake in the ground and say this is mine,
- 11:19Speaker 1: you know, they fight, and then they they all spread
- 11:23Speaker 1: spread out. Then the crops come out. So any deer
- 11:28Speaker 1: that are living in these crop fields or buffer strips, uh,
- 11:31Speaker 1: they get de placed displaced as well. And then uh,
- 11:35Speaker 1: I really don't know what bucks are consistent in that
- 11:40Speaker 1: area until I'm gonna say mid October. Those are the
- 11:45Speaker 1: ones that end up sticking around for the rug. Yep, yep,
- 11:48Speaker 1: absolutely yeah. What percentage do you feel like of summer
- 11:52Speaker 1: bucks end up sticking around during fall for you on
- 11:56Speaker 1: that farm? Um, I'm gonna say probably one. That's it.
- 12:03Speaker 1: That's it. Wow, there's I mean, I am in a
- 12:06Speaker 1: spot where I mean I've sent either trail camera pictures
- 12:09Speaker 1: of all these all these deer, they just feel very
- 12:12Speaker 1: comfortable in the summertime hanging around this area. There's water,
- 12:16Speaker 1: there's food, there's cover. Uh and a lot of it
- 12:19Speaker 1: has to do with the standing corn. And then the
- 12:22Speaker 1: second that goes away, it's just it's a different landscape. Yeah,
- 12:29Speaker 1: and man, yeah, that's that's it makes Like you said,
- 12:32Speaker 1: the summer trail camera pictures, I'm kind of like you.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I used to get so so excited about them, and
- 12:37Speaker 1: now I just give less and less credence to them
- 12:40Speaker 1: because so many are gone during the season. I find
- 12:42Speaker 1: for me it's more like only on most of the
- 12:48Speaker 1: spots I hunt. Um. Further, what do you think about
- 12:50Speaker 1: our Ohio property? I feel like down there it was
- 12:53Speaker 1: it was more towards what Dan said. We would always
- 12:55Speaker 1: get way more summer pictures like there, maybe one or two. Look,
- 12:59Speaker 1: we might get like five r six mature bucks on
- 13:01Speaker 1: camera during the summer or seven, but then like two
- 13:04Speaker 1: to three maybe stick around for the seasons. That sounded
- 13:06Speaker 1: all right, Yeah, that sounds about right. We get we
- 13:09Speaker 1: get our hopes up a couple of big ones down there,
- 13:12Speaker 1: and then we'd we'd maybe see one of those kind
- 13:14Speaker 1: of hanging out throughout the year, um, and then we
- 13:17Speaker 1: might get another one rolling you know, they might roll
- 13:19Speaker 1: back through and November maybe the late season or something.
- 13:23Speaker 1: But that that farm never really held many bucks, you know,
- 13:26Speaker 1: there's more of a pass through farm. Yeah. Yeah, Dan,
- 13:31Speaker 1: Do you remember the buck Um? It would have been
- 13:34Speaker 1: probably the year that you and we did our trail
- 13:36Speaker 1: camera picture contests in the summer and I got that
- 13:39Speaker 1: buck that I called Junkyard. Do you remember him? He
- 13:41Speaker 1: had like triple brow times on each side, crazy junk Um. Well,
- 13:47Speaker 1: I ended up through Instagram someone recognized pictures of some
- 13:52Speaker 1: of the deer that I was posting and said, hey,
- 13:54Speaker 1: I hunt near there, and we end up chatting and
- 13:57Speaker 1: he ended up knowing that that buck care it actually
- 14:00Speaker 1: got hit crossing the road and was killed in by car. Yeah.
- 14:05Speaker 1: So cool to know the story of that though, you
- 14:07Speaker 1: know what I mean, Like a deer disappears and never
- 14:09Speaker 1: comes back and you're like, man, I wonder whatever happened
- 14:11Speaker 1: to that. Yeah, it was nice to get that kind
- 14:15Speaker 1: of confirmation of what happened. And there was another one
- 14:18Speaker 1: we're calling the Beast. I don't You might not remember
- 14:21Speaker 1: that one, but it was the same year, I think,
- 14:22Speaker 1: But just like super tall, just really really tall, impressive buck. Um,
- 14:28Speaker 1: and he got killed by another hunter like a mile away.
- 14:31Speaker 1: So it was kind of nice just to hear what
- 14:33Speaker 1: happened to some of these deer. Unfortunately, most everything I
- 14:35Speaker 1: heard was like, oh, yeah, that one got killed here,
- 14:37Speaker 1: that one got killed by this guy, this one get
- 14:38Speaker 1: hit by car. I killed that one. Um, so everyone
- 14:41Speaker 1: else did a lot more killing men, Josh. But and
- 14:45Speaker 1: I tell you, though, hey we did. We did all
- 14:47Speaker 1: right right down there. We did, Yeah, we did. And
- 14:50Speaker 1: I'll tell you this though, Um, I am really excited
- 14:54Speaker 1: about one particular buck. I sent you as pictures via
- 14:59Speaker 1: the phone, but I had a had a three year old.
- 15:03Speaker 1: He could have been a four year old last year.
- 15:05Speaker 1: I mean I never really got decent pictures of him.
- 15:07Speaker 1: But he's back this year. Uh and he blew up,
- 15:11Speaker 1: And um, I'm excited to see if he sticks around
- 15:14Speaker 1: on the shift because I can I can see myself
- 15:17Speaker 1: dedicating a season to wherever that box at. Describe that buck,
- 15:22Speaker 1: and then why why would you dedicate the season him?
- 15:25Speaker 1: Because it's I mean, it's a once in a lifetime, dear.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Just from a number one, he meets the age class
- 15:31Speaker 1: that I'm after and number two from a antler size,
- 15:37Speaker 1: it's a no brainer. I mean, dear like this don't
- 15:40Speaker 1: come along very often. So I'm looking at a picture here.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure this is the buck you're talking about.
- 15:46Speaker 1: But but but described this for everyone listening. Um, and
- 15:50Speaker 1: then last year, and I'll tell you how wrong you
- 15:52Speaker 1: are so so last year, Um, he was a Maine
- 16:00Speaker 1: him ten with long brow times. I'm probably gonna put
- 16:03Speaker 1: him as a ten. I'd probably put him in the
- 16:05Speaker 1: one fifties to low won sixties as a ten. This
- 16:10Speaker 1: year he is all of that plus about. I think
- 16:15Speaker 1: I counted probably about ten extra points this year. I
- 16:21Speaker 1: think I counted maybe nineteen total scorable points. Um, his
- 16:25Speaker 1: brow times are a foot long. I mean he's got
- 16:29Speaker 1: he's got a palmated front end that has two drops
- 16:32Speaker 1: off the front of it. And it's just it's a
- 16:36Speaker 1: sick buck that. Yeah. I get, I get big deer
- 16:39Speaker 1: on trail camera every single year, but not this big.
- 16:45Speaker 1: And I don't know if it's just one of these
- 16:48Speaker 1: things where I've been successful the last two years and
- 16:51Speaker 1: I I'm okay, where if if he is consistently on
- 16:55Speaker 1: trail camera, paying attention and putting effort into that particular deer. Yeah, yeah,
- 17:02Speaker 1: I mean, I'm right there with you too, obviously, as
- 17:05Speaker 1: people know, I've I've been a sucker for trying to
- 17:08Speaker 1: get after a specific buck. But this deer, I mean,
- 17:11Speaker 1: to your point, he definitely qualifies as as unique. I mean,
- 17:14Speaker 1: like you said, he's got to drop times off the
- 17:17Speaker 1: left main beam, and that left main beam is like
- 17:19Speaker 1: a club. And then it looks like he's got a
- 17:22Speaker 1: sticker off his left side G two in addition to
- 17:26Speaker 1: those drops, and on the right hand side main beam
- 17:29Speaker 1: on his G two. I think I'm seeing like a
- 17:31Speaker 1: triple split. Is that right? Uh yeah? And then he's
- 17:36Speaker 1: got a bunch of stickers on the bases and then
- 17:38Speaker 1: like you said, the brow times are each like twelve
- 17:40Speaker 1: inches straight up. I mean, it's a an insane looking deer.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Are people are other people to wear this? Dear Dan?
- 17:47Speaker 1: You know, Um, the crazy part about this is that
- 17:51Speaker 1: this buck hangs out on I'm guessing a different property
- 17:56Speaker 1: that nobody can hunt for a majority of the time,
- 18:00Speaker 1: but only comes out comes around every once in a
- 18:02Speaker 1: while to a part of the farm that typically doesn't
- 18:08Speaker 1: get any um, doesn't get any action because of the road.
- 18:15Speaker 1: It's near a house. Uh, and it's kind of in
- 18:18Speaker 1: a just an awkward place. It's just a people you know.
- 18:21Speaker 1: It's one of those places of Spencer where people would
- 18:24Speaker 1: probably walk by it and say there's nothing in there,
- 18:26Speaker 1: just because of you know, of what they are seeing
- 18:28Speaker 1: from the road. However, you take ten steps inside of
- 18:31Speaker 1: it and it's some of the thickest, nastiest ship on
- 18:34Speaker 1: the entire property. So I mean it holds. It holds
- 18:37Speaker 1: a good dope dough group. So you know, late October,
- 18:41Speaker 1: when I start checking my trail cameras, anything's possible. You know.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Now you said he had pictures of him last year,
- 18:46Speaker 1: where any of those during the season. Was he a
- 18:48Speaker 1: buck that stuck around for the season. Yes, he came
- 18:51Speaker 1: through he is he right away October. I had some
- 18:55Speaker 1: early daylight early like first of October. I had some
- 18:59Speaker 1: early season pick of him. I had him in a
- 19:01Speaker 1: pinch point, one of my favorite pinch points to hunt
- 19:04Speaker 1: on the farm a couple of times in mid October.
- 19:07Speaker 1: I'm talking like the tenth and eleventh at day during daylight. So, um,
- 19:13Speaker 1: if I get the opportunity to and the winds right
- 19:15Speaker 1: on those specific dates, I might be hunting a big
- 19:18Speaker 1: deer during the October lowell. Uh, so we'll see that's exciting,
- 19:23Speaker 1: although that doesn't exist right the what we'll call it
- 19:26Speaker 1: the quote unquote October low Yeah, Um, are you are
- 19:31Speaker 1: you calling this deer or anything? How do we know
- 19:34Speaker 1: this deer when you talk about him? Or is it
- 19:36Speaker 1: just that one big deer? Um? Like, I think I'm
- 19:40Speaker 1: gonna call him Narlie Charlie, Arlie, Charlie, Charley, Charlie dude.
- 19:47Speaker 1: And I got that idea off of Scooby Doo episode
- 19:51Speaker 1: that I was watching the other day with my kids. Nice,
- 19:55Speaker 1: what about what about the other old ones? So we
- 19:57Speaker 1: got dork, we got Narlie Charlie. What was the other one?
- 20:00Speaker 1: Do you have any No? Man, I didn't give him
- 20:03Speaker 1: a name because this is the first year of trail
- 20:05Speaker 1: camera pictures other than the sheds that I found five
- 20:08Speaker 1: years ago. So no name for him. Okay, if you'll,
- 20:12Speaker 1: if you'll allow it, I'd like Spencer to name that
- 20:14Speaker 1: buck o. Can you allow that? Yeah, Spencer, I will
- 20:19Speaker 1: allow it, but you have to do it right now,
- 20:22Speaker 1: right now? Which which one is this? Again? He's in eleven.
- 20:26Speaker 1: He's a six by six by five Um. Now, I
- 20:30Speaker 1: know in the past there was a buck named Mark Kenyon.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Is that buck dead alive? What's his status? I'm gonna
- 20:35Speaker 1: have to go with dead dead. Okay, well let's make
- 20:39Speaker 1: this one Mark Kenyon too, then Mark Kenyon two Kenyan two? Yeah?
- 20:45Speaker 1: Is that does that work? No? It doesn't Mark Mark
- 20:48Speaker 1: Kenyon had his opportunity on my farm. Okay, that's true.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I do think the sheds, which is pretty much Why
- 20:55Speaker 1: don't I just name it Spencer? Yeah? That works too?
- 21:00Speaker 1: Like that I didn't. I know it's not your idea,
- 21:02Speaker 1: but furger further, I'll let you be the judge. What
- 21:05Speaker 1: do you think? Well, I mean, Spencer is definitely better
- 21:08Speaker 1: than Mark Kenyan two. Yeah, all right. So Dan's after
- 21:17Speaker 1: the dork, he's after Narlie Charlie, and he's after Spencer.
- 21:23Speaker 1: That's good. Free Spencer. I'm flattered. Um, so you check
- 21:30Speaker 1: your cameras. Are you doing anything major between now and
- 21:35Speaker 1: September before it's all said done? Dan? Because I know
- 21:37Speaker 1: you're like me, you usually stay out of there the
- 21:39Speaker 1: month of September. Um, So any final things you're taking
- 21:42Speaker 1: care of these next like two weeks other than getting
- 21:46Speaker 1: in shape, you know, continuing the prep for elk season
- 21:49Speaker 1: my white tail. Everything in the white Tail was is
- 21:53Speaker 1: pretty much set until I start hunting. Did you do
- 21:56Speaker 1: any other stand work when you're checking those cameras? The
- 21:58Speaker 1: other day, I set up I did some micromanagement to
- 22:03Speaker 1: one of my favorite hunting locations, which was, like, it's
- 22:07Speaker 1: where I'm I had an encounter with a big eight
- 22:10Speaker 1: where my arrow hit the branch last year. So I
- 22:13Speaker 1: moved that stand location ten yards and then set up
- 22:17Speaker 1: my stand and re recut all my shooting lanes. Um.
- 22:22Speaker 1: And that's the only stand I really have up right now.
- 22:25Speaker 1: The rest will be set up when I go in
- 22:29Speaker 1: or sometime after my elk hunt. But there those are
- 22:33Speaker 1: like pinch point type hunts where I'm not gonna be
- 22:36Speaker 1: inter interrupting any betting or anything. Real. If I if
- 22:41Speaker 1: I can go in there and set it up on
- 22:43Speaker 1: a north wind or a south wind, I'll be good
- 22:46Speaker 1: to go. Uh And I'll do that, But if it
- 22:49Speaker 1: doesn't happen, I'll just set him set him up during
- 22:51Speaker 1: the season. Yeah. Do you ever go in and just
- 22:54Speaker 1: like prep trees without hanging a stand, but prepping area
- 22:57Speaker 1: so that if you do want to hunt there, you know,
- 22:59Speaker 1: like Jhnny ro does this a lot. He just preps
- 23:01Speaker 1: like fifty trees, doesn't hang any stands, but he has
- 23:04Speaker 1: a bunch like trimmed out stuff he wants to hunt
- 23:05Speaker 1: there he can just shim me up in his saddle
- 23:07Speaker 1: or something. He thought about doing that at all. Oh,
- 23:10Speaker 1: I have. I've done that in the past, and actually
- 23:12Speaker 1: I did it last year as well. So, I mean,
- 23:14Speaker 1: I have lots of trees prepped ready to go for
- 23:18Speaker 1: the upcoming season. It's just, you know, I find myself
- 23:23Speaker 1: never using those trees because I'm always micromanaging my stand locations. Right,
- 23:28Speaker 1: Like I did, uh two weekends ago, Right, I had
- 23:32Speaker 1: an entire set cut out, but I had this feeling
- 23:35Speaker 1: that I needed to be ten yards on this other tree,
- 23:38Speaker 1: and that's what I did. So I recut everything and
- 23:43Speaker 1: hopefully that's a better staying location than the than the
- 23:48Speaker 1: previous one. Yeah. Uh, further and Spencer, both of you
- 23:54Speaker 1: guys have listened to many, possibly most of like our
- 24:00Speaker 1: past episodes over the last like two or three or
- 24:02Speaker 1: four years. Would you guys agree with that? Yeah? Yeah, probably? Okay,
- 24:08Speaker 1: what is this past? Yeah, that's that's what this thing is.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Um Okay, I did not I did not listen to
- 24:16Speaker 1: the one about raising outdoor kids. I actually go in
- 24:22Speaker 1: weekly to the podcast and write bad reviews asking you
- 24:25Speaker 1: guys to not talk about outdoor kids. That's him. Oh,
- 24:33Speaker 1: now we know who it is, Dan Man. I hope,
- 24:35Speaker 1: I hope your wife gets pregnant. Okay, So my question though,
- 24:41Speaker 1: for you too. Since you've listened to most of these
- 24:43Speaker 1: episodes except for the kid related ones, you've heard Dan
- 24:48Speaker 1: talk about his hunting seasons, both what he's done leading
- 24:51Speaker 1: up to them and what he's done during the season
- 24:54Speaker 1: for now like three or four years, so you've heard
- 24:56Speaker 1: what he's been doing, how he's been preparing for all
- 24:58Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. Um. Last summer, we had a
- 25:02Speaker 1: guy named Joe Elsinger on the podcast, and he was
- 25:05Speaker 1: another guy who had listened to a lot of the
- 25:07Speaker 1: past episodes, so he was really familiar with what me
- 25:09Speaker 1: and Dan do and he gave each of us like
- 25:11Speaker 1: a piece of advice or like he kind of say, Okay,
- 25:14Speaker 1: based on what I know about how you've hund in
- 25:15Speaker 1: the past, this is the one thing I would recommend
- 25:17Speaker 1: you think about this year. And I really like that.
- 25:20Speaker 1: It's kind of interesting because because people that listen to
- 25:22Speaker 1: me and Dan talk, you know, every week over the years.
- 25:24Speaker 1: They kind of had this idea of what we're doing,
- 25:26Speaker 1: and they've they've kind of heard us talk through all
- 25:28Speaker 1: these things, heard about our mistakes, blah blah blah blah blah.
- 25:31Speaker 1: So I'm curious for the two of you, based off
- 25:34Speaker 1: what you know about Dan, what he's done in the past,
- 25:36Speaker 1: and what he's told you so far right now, about
- 25:38Speaker 1: how he's preparing for this year. I'll start with you, Spencer.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Do you have any one suggestion for Dan for this
- 25:44Speaker 1: year or piece of advice or mistake he should avoid
- 25:48Speaker 1: based on what you know about him and what he does. Um,
- 25:52Speaker 1: I don't think I have anything like that. One thing
- 25:54Speaker 1: I've never heard Dan talk about is, Um, I believe
- 25:58Speaker 1: these properties you haunt our shared properties, And I guess
- 26:01Speaker 1: I don't know what your relationship is with those other hunters,
- 26:04Speaker 1: if you're aware of like what their standards are or
- 26:08Speaker 1: is that correct that you haunt some shared properties? Yeah?
- 26:11Speaker 1: All the property that I hunt is shared. Yeah, Like,
- 26:16Speaker 1: are you aware of what they're doing when they're doing it? Um,
- 26:20Speaker 1: what they're after stuff like that. Yeah, I communicate with
- 26:23Speaker 1: them before the season. Is I mean they take a week.
- 26:27Speaker 1: They have a week long vacation that they take, uh,
- 26:30Speaker 1: and you know they go after they're on the same
- 26:33Speaker 1: property the you know, one of the weeks that I'm
- 26:35Speaker 1: there as well, So I just try to stay away
- 26:38Speaker 1: from them. Uh. We don't necessarily talk about strategy. UM.
- 26:43Speaker 1: We talk about UM. We may talk about it after
- 26:47Speaker 1: the season about what bucks are are aware and um,
- 26:52Speaker 1: but nothing like if I was sharing a property with
- 26:55Speaker 1: like one of my really good friends or uh my
- 26:59Speaker 1: brother or something like that. You know what I mean,
- 27:02Speaker 1: We're not exchanging information, if that makes sense, right. Yeah.
- 27:05Speaker 1: I was just curious what your relationship is with those guys,
- 27:09Speaker 1: if you think that could be something that changes for
- 27:12Speaker 1: you in the future, because I haunt shared properties as well,
- 27:15Speaker 1: and uh, I guess my communication with those other hunters
- 27:19Speaker 1: is even less than that almost. Um. You know it's uh,
- 27:23Speaker 1: it can be a problem at times, like we both
- 27:25Speaker 1: show up there and then you look at each other
- 27:28Speaker 1: and uh, you know, I have to make an awkward
- 27:31Speaker 1: decision then. So yeah, um, yeah, I mean I've I've
- 27:35Speaker 1: I've been there. I mean I've We've gotten to the
- 27:37Speaker 1: point now where we kind of each have our own locations,
- 27:41Speaker 1: our own kind of areas. Um, they only overlap overlap
- 27:45Speaker 1: a little bit, but they're they're less mobile than I am,
- 27:51Speaker 1: and uh, I'm you know, I'm okay with where they hunt.
- 27:55Speaker 1: I stay out of their areas, they stay out of mind.
- 27:57Speaker 1: I'm that guy who likes to go in and deep
- 28:02Speaker 1: and be mobile, and they're kind of you know, hey,
- 28:05Speaker 1: let's wait for the last thirty minutes of light to um.
- 28:09Speaker 1: You know, they hunt closer to the field edges and
- 28:13Speaker 1: all that stuff. So, uh, I don't know, it's like
- 28:15Speaker 1: our our strap. We're after the same deer because they
- 28:19Speaker 1: have trail cameras out too. However, they they hunt a
- 28:23Speaker 1: different style than me, so we're not necessarily overlapping. The
- 28:28Speaker 1: only the only problem I ever can I can ever
- 28:31Speaker 1: see is maybe if I set up somewhere and they
- 28:34Speaker 1: set up somewhere, not necessarily in the relative area, but
- 28:38Speaker 1: either my scent stream is ruining where they're at or
- 28:43Speaker 1: their scent stream is ruining where I'm at. The deer
- 28:46Speaker 1: are coming through one of those scent streams to get
- 28:49Speaker 1: to where they're set up. So, but you know, we're
- 28:51Speaker 1: both friendly with each other. It's not like, uh, I
- 28:55Speaker 1: don't know, it's not cutthroat, I'll put it that way.
- 28:58Speaker 1: What about this situation though, based on what you know
- 29:01Speaker 1: about where this person hunts or these people typically hunt,
- 29:05Speaker 1: would you like access a property or set up in
- 29:08Speaker 1: a property, or set up in a spot where you knew, Well, yeah,
- 29:12Speaker 1: when I head in to hunt this spot, I'm gonna
- 29:14Speaker 1: have to blow my wind right through where he typically is.
- 29:17Speaker 1: But it's gonna be good for me. But I know
- 29:18Speaker 1: it's gonna screw his stuff, his area or something like that.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Or would you say I don't want to screw that
- 29:23Speaker 1: up for him? Um, that's a great question because I'm
- 29:29Speaker 1: typically the first one on the farm every morning, so
- 29:33Speaker 1: I don't really have to deal with that. So you
- 29:36Speaker 1: just don't even know. Yeah, I just don't know if
- 29:39Speaker 1: they are there. Um, I typically am not running through
- 29:43Speaker 1: the same Like again, my tree stand locations are a
- 29:47Speaker 1: little bit different than where their their tree stands are.
- 29:50Speaker 1: And um, I mean, if it came down to it,
- 29:55Speaker 1: and I was let's say I had an encounter the
- 29:58Speaker 1: past two days and I was making in a big
- 30:00Speaker 1: move to go in after a deer that I felt
- 30:03Speaker 1: I had pegged. I mean, man, I'm I'm gonna do
- 30:06Speaker 1: what I gotta deal. I mean, would you go into
- 30:10Speaker 1: the area that he traditionally hunts? Um, maybe if you know,
- 30:15Speaker 1: if I knew he wasn't there, I flank you know,
- 30:18Speaker 1: I'm I flank these guys a lot too, right, So
- 30:23Speaker 1: they they will they have their tree stand locations, and
- 30:26Speaker 1: then if I see the deer working around their history,
- 30:29Speaker 1: you know, because they have ladder stands there there, right,
- 30:32Speaker 1: and so I will move based off of maybe where
- 30:37Speaker 1: they're at, or set up where they're at. So I'm
- 30:40Speaker 1: using them almost like a pinch point, right, So I
- 30:44Speaker 1: know the deer funneling around maybe the stand location, I
- 30:48Speaker 1: might I might set up down wind of them, or
- 30:53Speaker 1: even further down wind to them, or or you know,
- 30:56Speaker 1: kind of quartered away from them. So yeah, I'm mean
- 31:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna, I'm gonna. I'm gonna go out there and
- 31:02Speaker 1: hunt to my best ability. And yes, i'll probably be
- 31:06Speaker 1: uh you know, I'm not gonna go in and purposely
- 31:09Speaker 1: ruin any hunts. But if i'm if I'm if I
- 31:13Speaker 1: got a deer pegged, I'm gonna go in and I'm
- 31:15Speaker 1: gonna try to set up on that deer. Yeah, yeah,
- 31:19Speaker 1: you gotta do that. Yeah, so you you talked about
- 31:23Speaker 1: these three bucks that we've already talked about since we
- 31:27Speaker 1: last chatted. I know you kind of expressed a little
- 31:29Speaker 1: bit you said, this might be the kind of season
- 31:31Speaker 1: where you focus on one deer or these three deer.
- 31:35Speaker 1: How wi we're how is that evolved over the last
- 31:37Speaker 1: month now that you've got Narlie. Charlie like, how serious
- 31:40Speaker 1: are about that? Or is it gonna be You're gonna
- 31:42Speaker 1: shoot a four year old. I'm gonna approach every season
- 31:45Speaker 1: like I always do. This season like I always do,
- 31:47Speaker 1: and that is check out the trail cameras when it
- 31:50Speaker 1: you know, like I'm gonna get to the farm the
- 31:53Speaker 1: first evening and I'm gonna go check all my trail cameras,
- 31:58Speaker 1: the ones that won't be intrusive. I'm gonna make a
- 32:01Speaker 1: decision on what's showing up. And then from there it's, uh,
- 32:05Speaker 1: you start going in and you start putting the pieces
- 32:07Speaker 1: of the puzzle together, and you start collecting data. And
- 32:10Speaker 1: if I see a deer showing up on trail camera,
- 32:14Speaker 1: uh say at nighttime, I'm gonna bump in further down
- 32:17Speaker 1: wherever and maybe I can get eyes on him, or
- 32:20Speaker 1: maybe I can go in and set up another trail
- 32:22Speaker 1: camera or you know, oh this big scrape opened up,
- 32:25Speaker 1: let's put a trail camera over it. Um, you know
- 32:27Speaker 1: there's a lot I can't I can't say right now
- 32:30Speaker 1: because September shift, the harvest and deer not showing up
- 32:34Speaker 1: on trail camera. I mean that's a big thing. So
- 32:38Speaker 1: I have to use whatever I can to make moves
- 32:41Speaker 1: and if I'm not gonna waste my time chasing a deer,
- 32:44Speaker 1: that quote unquote doesn't exist. Yeah, Josh, do you have
- 32:50Speaker 1: any suggestion, advice, uh thing for Dan based on your
- 32:55Speaker 1: historical knowledge of him? Because Dan has annual patterns? You
- 32:58Speaker 1: know he doesn't He's got annual patterns every year. If
- 33:00Speaker 1: you check his trail cameras, he's doing the same thing basically.
- 33:05Speaker 1: So do you got anything for him? He kind of
- 33:08Speaker 1: answered one of my questions. I was gonna ask him,
- 33:10Speaker 1: if you know, being on a property where he shares,
- 33:12Speaker 1: does he ever use the other guys as you to
- 33:15Speaker 1: dictate what he's gonna do? Um, So he kind of
- 33:17Speaker 1: answered that. But then he's probably not gonna like me
- 33:19Speaker 1: very much about this one. But Dan, have you sat
- 33:21Speaker 1: all day yet? No? Well, then that would be that
- 33:29Speaker 1: would be something maybe to consider a November to check
- 33:34Speaker 1: this out further. I have made steps to that. Okay,
- 33:39Speaker 1: I bought a pair of hip waiters. I got I'm
- 33:42Speaker 1: getting a pair of hip waiters. I'll have it before
- 33:45Speaker 1: the hunting season starts. This will allow me to access
- 33:50Speaker 1: my property via back door. And now I feel that
- 33:56Speaker 1: if I can come into the property from the back end, well,
- 34:00Speaker 1: all the pressure in the mornings comes from the front end.
- 34:03Speaker 1: I'm going to catch these dear naturally coming back to
- 34:07Speaker 1: their bedding areas. And that might be the kind of
- 34:11Speaker 1: all day set type of scenario that sounds good. Now,
- 34:17Speaker 1: what about all this leg work you've been doing in
- 34:19Speaker 1: preparation with your elk hunts? Is that helping your knees
- 34:22Speaker 1: at all? Oh? Dude, I've lost ten pounds. I'm actually
- 34:25Speaker 1: feeling better. My back feels better. Um, I've been working
- 34:29Speaker 1: out more. I've been doing like less like meathead weights
- 34:33Speaker 1: and like like. I've become friends with the rowing machine.
- 34:37Speaker 1: I've been running on a treadmill. Um, I've been changing
- 34:41Speaker 1: my diet. Uh, and I feel good. However, I said
- 34:46Speaker 1: that about our Idaho trip that we went on. We
- 34:49Speaker 1: all know how that turned out. I think you've got
- 34:52Speaker 1: the right stuff of mine though, Like you said, I
- 34:54Speaker 1: think you were just trying to impress me with your
- 34:56Speaker 1: packs last time, and uh think now you've got the
- 35:00Speaker 1: right stuff in mind. Yep, me trying to impress you
- 35:04Speaker 1: with my own body. I had to share a tent
- 35:07Speaker 1: with another man again last week and it reminded me
- 35:10Speaker 1: of you and me I had to tell him that story. Um,
- 35:14Speaker 1: but I bought a bigger tent now, so it's it's
- 35:16Speaker 1: much It's much more in line with the tent you
- 35:19Speaker 1: had now that I've got a family of three. So yeah, man, um, alright,
- 35:27Speaker 1: let's take a quick break to think our partners at
- 35:29Speaker 1: Onyx and they are the producers of the Onyx Hunt app,
- 35:33Speaker 1: which is INSTEADY use on my mobile phone. You know,
- 35:35Speaker 1: just last week, for example, I was driving around in
- 35:38Speaker 1: the evening scouting some back roads looking for velvet bucks,
- 35:41Speaker 1: and I ended up getting eyes on a really nice, dear,
- 35:44Speaker 1: really big tall eight pointer with with like seven eight
- 35:47Speaker 1: nine inch prow times. And after I saw that buck,
- 35:49Speaker 1: I was curious about two different things. Number one, I
- 35:51Speaker 1: wanted to know who owned that property, and I was
- 35:54Speaker 1: actually able to see that on my Onyx Hunt app.
- 35:56Speaker 1: And then number two, I wondered how far away this
- 35:59Speaker 1: dear is from a property that I already could hunt well.
- 36:02Speaker 1: On the Onyx hunt app, there's a tool that allows
- 36:04Speaker 1: you to measure distances, so I pulled that up and
- 36:07Speaker 1: saw this deer was actually only three quarters of a
- 36:09Speaker 1: mile away from a spotic and hunt. So that was
- 36:12Speaker 1: really encouraging because that that definitely puts them within range
- 36:15Speaker 1: at least for like a rut cruising kind of situation.
- 36:17Speaker 1: So that was exciting. But if you're not familiar, Onyx
- 36:21Speaker 1: has got also of other layers and tools as full
- 36:25Speaker 1: topo and aerial map layers UM. It also has private
- 36:28Speaker 1: property information, public land borders, things such as current wildfires,
- 36:34Speaker 1: UM layers that show recent timber cuts. Most recently, I
- 36:38Speaker 1: saw they've got a partnership now with the q D
- 36:40Speaker 1: MAY where they are showing a layer that will actually
- 36:43Speaker 1: outline where CWD is present, which is an important thing
- 36:46Speaker 1: to know for testing purposes. So this is all really
- 36:49Speaker 1: good and helpful stuff. And if you would like to
- 36:51Speaker 1: learn more about Onyx, you can visit onyx maps dot
- 36:54Speaker 1: com or search for Onyx on your favorite mobile app store.
- 36:57Speaker 1: And if you want to get off your purchase, you
- 37:01Speaker 1: can use promo code wired that's w I R E
- 37:05Speaker 1: D to get off. What do you think, Spencer about
- 37:12Speaker 1: UM about your season? Have you been You have put
- 37:16Speaker 1: out some summer trial cameras, I've I have seen a
- 37:19Speaker 1: little bit of that. What's the story there? Uh So
- 37:23Speaker 1: my summer strategy and summer plans drastically changed a few
- 37:28Speaker 1: months ago, UM because South Dakota change their archery opener
- 37:32Speaker 1: from the third Saturday in September, which would land anywhere
- 37:36Speaker 1: from like, I don't know, mid twenties of September, they
- 37:40Speaker 1: changed that to September one. And so that has been
- 37:45Speaker 1: a huge change for me because typically in the past,
- 37:49Speaker 1: nothing that I would do in June, July, August mattered
- 37:54Speaker 1: because those bucks that I would scout or get to
- 37:57Speaker 1: know um or pattern would not be they'd be foreign
- 38:03Speaker 1: to me come the end of September, and then ultimately
- 38:06Speaker 1: October and November it didn't matter. So this year has
- 38:10Speaker 1: been different because I'll have a chance that some of
- 38:12Speaker 1: those deer um that I've been watching in July and
- 38:16Speaker 1: now August. So you know, if we're talking about goals,
- 38:20Speaker 1: like what my goal is this year, I would love
- 38:22Speaker 1: to shoot a velvet buck and so I've been doing
- 38:26Speaker 1: everything in preparation for that, um, getting my stands set
- 38:31Speaker 1: up for uh, you know, September one through ten. If
- 38:35Speaker 1: I was hunting those days, Um, you know, this is
- 38:38Speaker 1: where I would want that stand, even if it's not
- 38:41Speaker 1: going to be very good come November or whatever. UM.
- 38:45Speaker 1: I've been setting my cameras up that same way. I've
- 38:49Speaker 1: been scouting areas that are you know, going to work
- 38:53Speaker 1: come September one as well. And and that's my goal
- 38:56Speaker 1: I have. You know, I would say probably about ten
- 38:59Speaker 1: days before or most of the dear lose velvet or
- 39:02Speaker 1: starting to lose velvet, and so looking at my schedule,
- 39:06Speaker 1: I'll likely get like nine of those first ten evenings
- 39:09Speaker 1: to hunt. And my hope is to get a mature
- 39:12Speaker 1: velvet buck. Dan, I think we've talked about this for
- 39:15Speaker 1: but would you would you have interest in targeting a
- 39:18Speaker 1: velvet buck specifically? Man, I don't know, it's like this
- 39:23Speaker 1: time in my life. UM. Maybe it just depends on
- 39:27Speaker 1: the circumstance, right, because I would like to not shoot
- 39:31Speaker 1: a velvet buck. But however, it depends on the trip, right.
- 39:35Speaker 1: If I'm going to South Dakota on the first week
- 39:38Speaker 1: of September and that's when I have the trip planned. Well,
- 39:42Speaker 1: I may encounter one and I better be prepared to
- 39:43Speaker 1: shoot a velvet buck or like, uh, these guys who
- 39:46Speaker 1: are going out to the high country from mule deer, right,
- 39:48Speaker 1: so a lot of them are successful before the weather
- 39:52Speaker 1: kind of comes in and shifts some off of wherever
- 39:56Speaker 1: it is that they're living. So yeah, I don't oh
- 40:00Speaker 1: you and I it would have to be a game
- 40:01Speaker 1: time decision, what about you? Further, I don't know. I
- 40:08Speaker 1: don't really have I don't really have this like a
- 40:10Speaker 1: goal to go shoot a velvet buck, but it'd be cool. Um,
- 40:14Speaker 1: I guess if I'm doing North Dakota, I guess I
- 40:16Speaker 1: wasn't really even thinking about that. Just I'm hunted in
- 40:19Speaker 1: September at all for white tails. So I guess I
- 40:22Speaker 1: need to totally ramp up my game if I'm gonna
- 40:25Speaker 1: do that and be ready for that eight spencer. I
- 40:28Speaker 1: got a question for you I talked about I talked
- 40:31Speaker 1: about in Iowa. We have this shift right as soon
- 40:34Speaker 1: as they come out of velvet their patterns changed. Were
- 40:37Speaker 1: you hunt, do you notice a shift in September as well,
- 40:41Speaker 1: and you think that by them moving that season date up,
- 40:46Speaker 1: you're gonna be able to still catch them on their
- 40:48Speaker 1: summer pattern. Yeah. Absolutely, And that's why I said that, Um,
- 40:53Speaker 1: in the past, you know, nothing that I would do
- 40:55Speaker 1: in August would be relevant become like September only fourth
- 41:00Speaker 1: or whatever. Um. I would say, definitely, once you hit
- 41:03Speaker 1: like that September fifteenth time, UM, you know your your
- 41:06Speaker 1: bachelor groups are broken up, the velvet comes off, a
- 41:09Speaker 1: lot of bucks go nocturnal, and just things change, um.
- 41:13Speaker 1: And I would say that there's um a few times
- 41:17Speaker 1: where I haunt that the deck gets reshuffled with as
- 41:21Speaker 1: far as what the deer doing and what deer around.
- 41:23Speaker 1: And I would say that's one of them. Mid September. UM.
- 41:27Speaker 1: For us being the pheasant capital of the world. Once
- 41:30Speaker 1: pheasant season opens, that changes a lot of things as
- 41:33Speaker 1: far as where deer bedding. Um. And so that's another
- 41:37Speaker 1: time that the deck gets reshuffled. Everything that I haunt
- 41:40Speaker 1: is is egg country. These properties are not managed for
- 41:44Speaker 1: deer or the farmers are not even thinking about deer
- 41:47Speaker 1: when they're doing things. And so it happens again when
- 41:50Speaker 1: crop gets harvested or when cattle get moved out of
- 41:53Speaker 1: a pasture into a feed lot, and that's usually like
- 41:56Speaker 1: end of October, beginning in November, and then the rout
- 41:59Speaker 1: that happens gain you, you lose dear game deer. And
- 42:01Speaker 1: then um, once we get into December and things get
- 42:05Speaker 1: really cold and snow was on the ground. Uh that's
- 42:08Speaker 1: one of the biggest shifts as well that we have
- 42:10Speaker 1: because Uh, like I said, properties where I'm at aren't
- 42:14Speaker 1: managed for deer, and so the food sources can become
- 42:18Speaker 1: kind of limited in the deer really congregating some specific areas.
- 42:24Speaker 1: So given that's the case, Spencer, Um, you're gonna get this,
- 42:27Speaker 1: like you mentioned, you're gonna get this early September time
- 42:30Speaker 1: from you can finally take advantage of opening days, like
- 42:32Speaker 1: just two weeks away. Um, what's your game plan? What
- 42:36Speaker 1: do you have in place? Do you do you have
- 42:39Speaker 1: a buck picked out? Do you think you've got one
- 42:41Speaker 1: patterned already? Tell me about how you're gonna get it done.
- 42:44Speaker 1: So I threw up some cameras in June and I've
- 42:47Speaker 1: been checking on every I don't know, two to three
- 42:50Speaker 1: weeks since then and July kind of through the beginning
- 42:54Speaker 1: of August. Um, I was the most confident I've ever
- 42:57Speaker 1: been on a buck. I have a big five by
- 43:00Speaker 1: five that I would say is maybe in the one sixties. Um.
- 43:04Speaker 1: That that I was very confident as to where he
- 43:06Speaker 1: was betting, where he was feeding, where he was entering
- 43:09Speaker 1: the field, and how do you that kind of thing, um,
- 43:13Speaker 1: just by what I was. I've seen him in person
- 43:16Speaker 1: one time, how he entered the field, and my trail
- 43:19Speaker 1: camera he was becoming. Uh it was almost redundant, like
- 43:23Speaker 1: he would be there every third day, the last thirty
- 43:26Speaker 1: minutes to daylight. And that went on for like three weeks. Um.
- 43:30Speaker 1: So I felt really confident about that deer. But in
- 43:32Speaker 1: my last card pool he's there even last sometimes at night. UM.
- 43:36Speaker 1: So that's a buck that I was probably over confident on.
- 43:40Speaker 1: But with two weeks to go yet, it could change
- 43:43Speaker 1: where you know, all of a sudden, I'm I'm seeing
- 43:45Speaker 1: him a bunch again. But as far as my strategy, UM,
- 43:49Speaker 1: I'm gonna be safe. I don't want to mess anything
- 43:51Speaker 1: up trying to get a velvet buck that that's going
- 43:54Speaker 1: to kick a deer out of some betting area. Um,
- 43:57Speaker 1: you know that would typically hold him all the way
- 44:00Speaker 1: through November or whatever. So it's uh, pretty typical early
- 44:07Speaker 1: season setups, um, field edges, overlooking beans, um, and just
- 44:13Speaker 1: planning on evening hunts. I got a question for you
- 44:18Speaker 1: in regards to the egg there right when I think
- 44:21Speaker 1: of and I don't know the terrain that you hunt in,
- 44:24Speaker 1: but it sounds like it's heavy into the egg. Um.
- 44:28Speaker 1: Is there like a main timber or is it just
- 44:31Speaker 1: kind of like waterways and um uh fans cross fence
- 44:37Speaker 1: rows were these deer bedding? So it's it's fairly sporadic. Um.
- 44:43Speaker 1: South Dakota I believe is out of the fifty states
- 44:48Speaker 1: in tree coverage. UM. So I think it's either Nebraska.
- 44:51Speaker 1: North Dakota has the least amount of trees per square
- 44:54Speaker 1: mile and and work second to last. UM. So we
- 44:57Speaker 1: don't have a lot of timber. A lot of these
- 44:59Speaker 1: d or do end up betting in low spots and
- 45:01Speaker 1: bean fields where there's uh some crper you know, a
- 45:05Speaker 1: slew or a dry slew. But then we also have
- 45:09Speaker 1: like shelter belts around you know, cattle yards where deal
- 45:13Speaker 1: with bed and then creek bottoms. Anything that has trees,
- 45:17Speaker 1: UM is almost guaranteed to have deer because we have
- 45:21Speaker 1: so few trees. Yeah, so the egg is a huge
- 45:27Speaker 1: I mean once that egg comes out, is there a
- 45:29Speaker 1: big shift. Yeah, yeah, that that's a big one for sure. Um,
- 45:32Speaker 1: you know, losing corner beans is huge, and then moving
- 45:36Speaker 1: cattle around is big too. I have some properties that
- 45:39Speaker 1: I have UM permission to hunt, but they have cattle
- 45:43Speaker 1: on them all the way through you know, the end
- 45:45Speaker 1: of October or beginning in November. And it's the prettiest
- 45:49Speaker 1: country that we have in this area. But the problem
- 45:52Speaker 1: is that it gets grazed down into where it looks
- 45:55Speaker 1: like a golf course, and uh, the deer just kind
- 45:57Speaker 1: of avoid the cattle and and you know, or some
- 46:00Speaker 1: place else, and they will move in until like mid November.
- 46:02Speaker 1: So the trees are super important. And even those areas
- 46:07Speaker 1: that are overrun with cattle, as soon as those cattle
- 46:09Speaker 1: are out, we'll see dear move in alright. So the
- 46:13Speaker 1: question I have then is with the inevitable shift of
- 46:17Speaker 1: crops coming out and you you hunting now this first
- 46:21Speaker 1: first week of September, what is stopping you from being
- 46:25Speaker 1: aggressive on you know, during that first week of September,
- 46:30Speaker 1: knowing that you know, as soon as that crops come out,
- 46:33Speaker 1: it's going to change everything. Well, the harvest here can change.
- 46:39Speaker 1: You know every year. Some years it's mid November, other
- 46:42Speaker 1: years it's early in November. And so I feel like
- 46:45Speaker 1: if I was super aggressive, I'm then giving up, you know,
- 46:49Speaker 1: like two months of of hunting on pressured deer. If
- 46:53Speaker 1: all of a sudden I'm pressuring these deer on like
- 46:56Speaker 1: September one, I might not have a chance at them.
- 46:59Speaker 1: You know. Ever again this season where if I'm playing
- 47:02Speaker 1: it safe and uh, you know, hunting these field edges
- 47:06Speaker 1: where I'm I'm guaranteed not to bump anything. Those are dear,
- 47:10Speaker 1: I'll continue to see and I can get more familiar
- 47:13Speaker 1: with at least until those crops come out sometime in
- 47:16Speaker 1: late October at the beginning of November. Got it? You
- 47:20Speaker 1: know that buck you killed last year, Spencer um? Which one?
- 47:26Speaker 1: Oh man? Yeah? Sorry, you killed about twelve of them
- 47:29Speaker 1: last year, the big one, the really big one you
- 47:33Speaker 1: killed in South Dakota. I'm sorry for that. Yeah, that
- 47:36Speaker 1: was a dick move, um um, did you? Because I
- 47:43Speaker 1: remember that was kind of a surprise, if I if
- 47:44Speaker 1: I remember correct, I was a little bit of a
- 47:46Speaker 1: surprise for you. That buck kind of came out of nowhere.
- 47:48Speaker 1: Did you learn anything from that hunt or that deer
- 47:51Speaker 1: or that experience that you're gonna apply this year. So
- 47:56Speaker 1: would I would contribute me killing that deer. Two that
- 48:01Speaker 1: it was totally unpressured that buck. I got married last
- 48:04Speaker 1: summer and we moved into a different house and so
- 48:06Speaker 1: that ate up a lot of what would be my
- 48:09Speaker 1: summer scouting and prep time and stuff, and so that
- 48:12Speaker 1: was an area that was largely untouched by me. Um
- 48:16Speaker 1: And so I think that deer was really comfortable. But
- 48:19Speaker 1: as far as applying that to this year, the biggest
- 48:22Speaker 1: change is that last year it was corn and this
- 48:25Speaker 1: year it's beings. And that particular spot there's some roads
- 48:28Speaker 1: around um and there's traffic in that area, and so
- 48:33Speaker 1: what changes when it goes from being beans to corn.
- 48:37Speaker 1: When it's corn, um, you know, that's a twelve foot
- 48:40Speaker 1: wall basically between those deer in that road, and they're
- 48:44Speaker 1: so well insulated that nothing on nothing bothers them then,
- 48:48Speaker 1: and so when it's all of a sudden beans, Uh,
- 48:51Speaker 1: it's a lot tougher to make those deer comfortable in
- 48:56Speaker 1: that field. And so yeah, I'm kind of doing the
- 48:59Speaker 1: same thing where I'm staying out of the areas where
- 49:03Speaker 1: those bucks would be betting but at the same time,
- 49:06Speaker 1: it's it's not going to be as great because of
- 49:09Speaker 1: having the beans now instead of corn. Gotcha, gotcha. So
- 49:14Speaker 1: so you mentioned this one big five by five that
- 49:17Speaker 1: you thought you had pegged. Um, first off, I think
- 49:19Speaker 1: it's funny that you call it a five by five. Um,
- 49:23Speaker 1: this is a white tail podcast man, that's a ten pointer. Uh.
- 49:27Speaker 1: And uh number two, were there any Are there any
- 49:30Speaker 1: other mature bucks on your radar that you've either seen
- 49:33Speaker 1: or got camera. Is there anything else that you might
- 49:35Speaker 1: be hoping to get eyes on early in season? Uh?
- 49:39Speaker 1: There are a few other deer on my radar, um,
- 49:42Speaker 1: but nothing as consistent or as big as this buck. Um.
- 49:47Speaker 1: I have a feeling if I'm gonna kill a deer
- 49:49Speaker 1: in those first ten days, it's going to be this one.
- 49:51Speaker 1: I don't have many other mature deer that are um
- 49:56Speaker 1: showing themselves a lot or in areas that I want
- 49:59Speaker 1: to be hunting in early September. So Uh, to answer
- 50:04Speaker 1: your question, I think, if I'm successful, it's going to
- 50:06Speaker 1: be this big five by five. And what are we
- 50:08Speaker 1: gonna know this book? As? Um? That's that's something I
- 50:13Speaker 1: was so bad at naming Dan's dear because I don't
- 50:15Speaker 1: name dear. I always to me that like that adds
- 50:22Speaker 1: some extra pressure. If I'm naming this dear, then it
- 50:25Speaker 1: feels like I have to get him, or like I'm
- 50:28Speaker 1: after that book, or or if you know, I have
- 50:31Speaker 1: some buddies that name dear, and then it's like implied
- 50:34Speaker 1: that they're actually hunting that deer when reality they've only
- 50:38Speaker 1: seen that book like once on trail camera during the
- 50:41Speaker 1: rout in the middle of the night. And so I've
- 50:44Speaker 1: always been very hesitant to add dear because I feel
- 50:47Speaker 1: like it adds some extra pressure. Like I'm looking at
- 50:49Speaker 1: my my trail camera inventory right now, and I'll tell
- 50:52Speaker 1: you what these files are labeled as. I have big ten,
- 50:56Speaker 1: no brows eight small, split G two young tall eight
- 51:00Speaker 1: young ten young split raw young straight eight. So you
- 51:05Speaker 1: you you could have a show on the Outdoor Network
- 51:08Speaker 1: with that one. So the creativity you've got there's inspiring, right.
- 51:14Speaker 1: Um So this Buck's pictures are living in a folder
- 51:18Speaker 1: called big ten. Okay, So I really like the idea
- 51:22Speaker 1: of putting more pressure on you and making you feel uncomfortable.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Um so so hot, Dan, I'm gonna have you named
- 51:30Speaker 1: this buck and Spencer. You don't need to know this
- 51:32Speaker 1: buck as this name, but the rest of us will. Okay,
- 51:36Speaker 1: what do you got, dam You couldn't even you couldn't
- 51:40Speaker 1: name it Dan damn. Yeah, give me an estimated score
- 51:44Speaker 1: on him? What do you think I would say? Like? Okay,
- 51:49Speaker 1: how old? Um? I'm not familiar with this year. My
- 51:54Speaker 1: best guest would be five and a half. And he's
- 51:56Speaker 1: very wide too, right yeah yeah you uh, he's wide
- 52:01Speaker 1: and he is almost perfectly symmetrical, but he has a
- 52:04Speaker 1: split brow on one side. Okay, what's your favorite movie
- 52:08Speaker 1: of all time? Forrest Gump? Okay, there it is, Bubba. No,
- 52:15Speaker 1: that's dumb, don't I God, I'm so sorry I even
- 52:17Speaker 1: said that. Just name it, just just name it Forest. Okay,
- 52:21Speaker 1: god it, I'm I'm changing the name of the file
- 52:24Speaker 1: right now, perfect Forrest. I was hoping you're gonna say Jenny,
- 52:30Speaker 1: Jenny Forest. That will be good? All right? Um? Now, Spencier,
- 52:36Speaker 1: You've got a whole slew of other trips though, right
- 52:38Speaker 1: where else? What else are you doing? As far as hunts?
- 52:41Speaker 1: This here? So South Dakota is fairly liberal with their tags,
- 52:46Speaker 1: and so right now I'm sitting at for South Dakota
- 52:49Speaker 1: Buck tags, um, and I'm in line to maybe draw
- 52:54Speaker 1: one or two more. We'll see. There's still some applications
- 52:57Speaker 1: to be processed. UM knows all white tail? Uh? It varies,
- 53:02Speaker 1: And so I gotta think about this. The two archery
- 53:05Speaker 1: tags I have are labeled as any deer, so this
- 53:08Speaker 1: could be a white tail or meal deer, but primarily
- 53:10Speaker 1: where I haunted white tails. So it would be a
- 53:13Speaker 1: shock to me if I were to put an archery
- 53:16Speaker 1: tag on a mule deer. But I have that option, um.
- 53:19Speaker 1: And then I got to think. One of my rifle
- 53:23Speaker 1: tags is also in any deer tag, but again, there
- 53:25Speaker 1: aren't any mule deer around. I've seen one in like
- 53:28Speaker 1: the last five years. And then my other tag isn't
- 53:32Speaker 1: any white tail tag, and that is in an area
- 53:34Speaker 1: that's probably about fifty fifty mule deer white tail. So
- 53:37Speaker 1: if if I don't get any other tags, and uh,
- 53:40Speaker 1: I were to fill these four my guesses, they would
- 53:43Speaker 1: all be white tails. Do you have any Do I
- 53:47Speaker 1: have a preference? Yeah, Like if you were in an
- 53:49Speaker 1: area and you could shoot a mule deer or a
- 53:51Speaker 1: white tail, and what would you be like hedging towards
- 53:54Speaker 1: one or the other. I've shot quite a few white
- 53:58Speaker 1: tails at this point, and and not as many mule
- 54:00Speaker 1: deer that I would probably prefer a mutle deer. But
- 54:05Speaker 1: at the same time, like a lot of people keep
- 54:08Speaker 1: telling me, like, you know what tail hunting is it enough?
- 54:12Speaker 1: Pretty soon you're gonna want to elk count You're gonna
- 54:14Speaker 1: want to mule deer hunt and bear hunting all that stuff.
- 54:17Speaker 1: But I have not gotten to that point yet. I
- 54:20Speaker 1: am so happy like shooting a hunter and forty in
- 54:23Speaker 1: white tail that I uh, I would have a hard
- 54:27Speaker 1: time passing one for a chance at a mutle deer. Yeah,
- 54:31Speaker 1: what we're gonna sit down. Is that the same for nonresidents?
- 54:36Speaker 1: Can they get two tags too? Or is that just
- 54:38Speaker 1: for residents? Yes? Uh, South Dakota tags are guaranteed for
- 54:44Speaker 1: non residents. It's not a true over the counter system
- 54:47Speaker 1: where like you would drive to some gas station and
- 54:50Speaker 1: buy your tag um once you've got in the state.
- 54:53Speaker 1: That that's not how it works. You have to apply online,
- 54:55Speaker 1: but you're guaranteed the tag. But as a non resident,
- 54:58Speaker 1: you can get a tag that's good for the east
- 55:01Speaker 1: side of the Missouri River and the west side of
- 55:02Speaker 1: the Missouri River. The Missouri River cuts the state in half. UM.
- 55:06Speaker 1: On the east side of the Missouri River, it's probably
- 55:10Speaker 1: white tail. There are some mule deer along the Missouri River.
- 55:13Speaker 1: On the west side of the Missouri River, it's probably, uh,
- 55:18Speaker 1: white tails. Mule deer got you interesting, a lot of
- 55:24Speaker 1: opportunities there down, don't come. Don't come. You've you've done
- 55:31Speaker 1: a very poor job of hiding the success that you've
- 55:34Speaker 1: been having out there. So secrets out, Spencer. What's so
- 55:39Speaker 1: where else though? You? I know you're going to some
- 55:41Speaker 1: other places, right, Okay, So I force South Dakota tags
- 55:45Speaker 1: that will lead up most of my time UM, and
- 55:48Speaker 1: then I have some openingvites to like come on Kentucky
- 55:52Speaker 1: or Oklahoma that I might do. But for the most part, Uh,
- 55:56Speaker 1: I'll be focusing on on South Dakota. I should draw
- 56:00Speaker 1: rightful analog tag. I'm gonna go archery animalo hunting this weekend, um,
- 56:05Speaker 1: and then I'm also going to be applying for bison tag.
- 56:10Speaker 1: So there's a good chance that I don't leave the state. UM,
- 56:14Speaker 1: but I'll still be busy. You gotta tell us about
- 56:18Speaker 1: the bison. I know you told me about this like
- 56:21Speaker 1: last week over the phone or something, but tell us
- 56:23Speaker 1: what the deals of that hunt. So we have I
- 56:28Speaker 1: believe it's like the the third largest wild or third
- 56:34Speaker 1: largest publicly owned bison population in Custer State Park that's
- 56:39Speaker 1: at the like the foothills of the Black Hills in
- 56:43Speaker 1: the western part of the state. And they give out
- 56:45Speaker 1: like fifty tags each year. It might be less than that,
- 56:49Speaker 1: maybe it's like thirty. I don't remember. Um, but uh,
- 56:55Speaker 1: getting a tag isn't isn't super hard. You're able to
- 56:58Speaker 1: draw sometimes with like four or five points. So once
- 57:02Speaker 1: you do draw, you have a certain amount of days
- 57:07Speaker 1: that you are allowed to go haunt at like the
- 57:09Speaker 1: end of October, and your your tag can fall into
- 57:12Speaker 1: like two categories non trophy bison or trophy bison. And
- 57:17Speaker 1: so because of the cost, I would be getting the
- 57:20Speaker 1: non trophy bison tag. Um. And when you get out there,
- 57:24Speaker 1: you have to have a biologist with you that approves
- 57:27Speaker 1: of you, you know, taking a shot at or harvesting
- 57:31Speaker 1: uh a specific bison. So that's what would be And
- 57:35Speaker 1: because these things are in a state park, UM, they're
- 57:39Speaker 1: not super wild. Like it'll honestly probably be one of
- 57:43Speaker 1: the easier hunts that I would ever do. It would
- 57:45Speaker 1: just be special because it is bison, and I would
- 57:48Speaker 1: probably try it with my bow. What differentiates this trophy
- 57:53Speaker 1: versus non trophy classification? I think age structure. So I
- 57:58Speaker 1: think the bi elogists there are very familiar with what
- 58:04Speaker 1: you know, an older bison looks like versus younger bison.
- 58:08Speaker 1: And so I think you're going off the width of
- 58:11Speaker 1: their horns. Are they called horns on a bison? Right? Yeah?
- 58:15Speaker 1: So I think you're going off the width of that.
- 58:19Speaker 1: Or maybe if there's like a a younger male that's problematic,
- 58:23Speaker 1: that he's you know, running off a bunch of females
- 58:28Speaker 1: or something that they would have you try to get
- 58:30Speaker 1: that one or whatever it might be that I'm not
- 58:32Speaker 1: super familiar with. I just know it would be a
- 58:34Speaker 1: smaller bison. So you draw a bison tag. It's sometime
- 58:41Speaker 1: in that last part of October. What happens if it's
- 58:45Speaker 1: the like the night before your bison hunt and you
- 58:49Speaker 1: happen to check your trailcra picture and you see that
- 58:52Speaker 1: forest is moving in daylight, uh, and you've got the
- 58:56Speaker 1: perfect wind and conditions the next day cold front, you know,
- 59:00Speaker 1: the winds just where you want it. Maybe a high
- 59:02Speaker 1: bear metric pressure, whatever it is you like, whatever your
- 59:05Speaker 1: flavor is. Um, would you still go on the bison
- 59:10Speaker 1: hunt because you got that tag and it's the special hunt?
- 59:13Speaker 1: Or do you say, right, I gotta put that hold
- 59:16Speaker 1: because Forest is ready to go. Now, I would go
- 59:20Speaker 1: on the bison hunt for sure, But I've made that
- 59:22Speaker 1: mistake in the past where I've you know, it's been
- 59:24Speaker 1: approaching the rotten like a deer, just slowly been showing
- 59:28Speaker 1: up closer to daylight. And then I go chasing a
- 59:31Speaker 1: different tag that I have in a different part of
- 59:33Speaker 1: the state or something, and I come back and I
- 59:36Speaker 1: had multiple missed opportunities or a missed opportunity. Um, that's
- 59:41Speaker 1: something that I considered with other tags I have, but
- 59:43Speaker 1: that wouldn't be the case with the bison tag. Yeah, Um, Dan,
- 59:49Speaker 1: do you have Now this isn't this isn't quite as applicable.
- 59:52Speaker 1: But given what you know about Spencer, other than telling
- 59:55Speaker 1: him that he should have kids, do you have any
- 59:56Speaker 1: recommendations for him this season? That's Joe, dude, don't have kids?
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: Are you kidding me? No? I don't. I mean, I can't.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: I can't give him a vice, man, I don't. I
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: don't know. The only thing I would say is, don't
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: be afraid if you feel there's gonna be a shift coming,
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: don't be afraid to get aggressive on a couple of
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: those early season hunts. Um. You know, maybe even if
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: it has to be like a quicker running gun inside
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: a timber line to catch him maybe a little bit
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: before daylight. I don't know, that's just I guess that's
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: just what I would try to do. If I had
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: a deer coming out on a field edge and it's
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: a little bit past dark, I'd probably be a little
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: bit more aggressive and bump into maybe a stage area
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: or a first kind of pinch point between where you
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: think he's betting. All given the correct wind direction, of course,
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: so you probably do. I'm assuming a lot of your
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: hunt adjustments, Spencer. Is it more observation based than trail
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: camera base? Just because the fact there is so little
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: timber that you can just see much farther was that?
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: Would you say that's accurate? Yes? I would say that
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: if I'm moving a stand location mid season or something,
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: it's because I was hunting a different stand and you know,
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: saw a buck using a different trail or in a
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: different area. Um, I I don't get a ton of
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: relevant information from my trail camera. So yeah, I would
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: say that it's mostly observation based. I love hunting places
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: like that where you can see far because number one,
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: it's it's a huge just tool. Just being able to
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: observe from a distance is so helpful. And that's a
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: harder thing to do here in place like Michigan with
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: so much timber um in flat land, there's just not
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: a whole lot of great observation points. But I love
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: going to places, you know, like out west, where you
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: can see so much further like that. I mean, that's
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: just fun. It's just fun to be able to see deer,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: lots of deer, and observe that movement, even if it's
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: out of shooting range. That's just that's just a cool.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: So I'm jealous of you from that perspective. Um, And
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: on that front talking about hunting these big, wide open places, Um, further,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: are you hunting North Coota this year? Is that actually
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: gonna happen? We'll see. I gotta make my mind up
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: here real quick. I'm I'm probably gonna make my decision
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: here this week. And uh, I got some things I
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: gotta work around with work, see if I can get
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: those rearranged. But I think if I can do that,
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna give it a go. It's two
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: weeks a week, I know it's two weeks away, so
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: I'll probably be out there. I don't think I'm gonna
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: be able to get out there the first, um September one.
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: I gotta look at a calendar here real quick, if
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: you'll pull up, I think I'm gonna try to get
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: out there like that Tuesday. So like the fourth, September four.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: How long are you gonna be a budget to it?
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: Probably a week, probably a wee probably till the eleventh.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: So here's here's my dilemma that I'm torn between. Is
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: that my original plan was to go to Montana for
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: well then you know, actually, now that you just told
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: me that, that makes this decision much easier for me, Um,
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: because I was if you were going to go there
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: for opening Day in North Dakota, I was seriously considering
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: joining you there just because it'd be fun to be
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: hunting together for a few days and then hopefully fill
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: a tag in you know, three or four or five days,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: and then still have time to go to Montana. But
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: if you're not going to be there to the fourth anyways,
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: I'm just gonna go Montana first and hope that I
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: can get it done there, and then maybe by the
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: time I get it done, you know, you'll be just
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: arriving or only starting there, so that could work. Um,
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: what are you gonna be How long are you gonna
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: be out there for? I have from like September one
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: through the tenth that I've kind of budgeted for those
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: that hunt Montana hunt, and then you know, now that
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: you're going to Dakota, I'm gonna try to make it happen,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: make it work, to sneak over there too. Um. So
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: have you been have you been thinking about anymore? Have
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: you thought through have you looked at any more maps?
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: Because I'm yeah, I've been. I've been looking at it
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: on not ex I've just been looking at that stuff
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: a lot here and out there, just trying to figure
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: out some places. I got a pretty good idea of
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: where I want to go, where I'm going to stay
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: in camp and all that good stuff. Um, and then
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: some of it's just gonna be get out there. I'll
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: probably I'm probably not going to hunt the mornings. Um,
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: just use that time to do a little scouting or
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: do some glassing and see what I can, you know,
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: see what I can figure out where they're, where they're going,
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: where they're coming from, and then try to set up
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: on them in the afternoon and kind of do a
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: little bit driving around out there and kind of ground
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: tooth and the stuff that we weren't able to get
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: to um when out and shed hunted. Yeah, you um
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: see here and me mobile here and be kind of
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: running down and right, didn't you You've kind of put
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: together a new mobile set up this year, isn't that right?
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: A little bit? Um, I'm just kind of tweaking up
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: from what I had. But I was just so sick
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: of like carrying sticks on the bottom of my backpack
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: and making all sorts of noise and they never stayed together.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: So I got some of those, um got what they
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: call the talents mark, is that what they're called? Yeah,
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: So I got those. Are gonna strap them on the
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: back of my tree stand. Hopefully, well we'll be a
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: little bit easier. I was talking about maybe thinking about
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: maybe getting some like individual steps and just be a
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: little bit more lightweight. But then I got to thinking,
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: I don't feel like strapping up ten or twelve steps
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: every every time I'm going in. And um, I've got
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: the muddy sticks with the kind of the rope attachment
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: system that I really like. They're quiet, they're they're easy
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: to use, um, but they're just a little clunky getting
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: it out. So I'm hoping those stick talents will will work,
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: um well for what I want. And uh, I've got
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: a I got a new tree stand last year. I
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: got the xop Vanish I think it's called. UM. Really
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: like that really comfortable, really light, easy to get in
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: and out and up in the tree. Um. So I'm
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: just trying to fine tune that and I think I'm
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: think I'm where I want to be. But then you
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: got me thinking about trying to harness a couple of
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: weeks ago when you had that podcast talking about the
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: harness stuff. So now I'm toying around with that. So
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: I'm probably just gonna stick with the tree stand. But man,
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: the saddle stuff is really intriguing. Yeah, I still haven't
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: gotten mine, so I'm hoping i'll have I'll have one
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: of them in time for that hunt. But it is
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: really very intriguing option. Um, So what are you thinking
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: for that hunt? What's your what's your what's your goal there?
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: What are you gonna shoot? Anything that would be remotely mature?
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: I mean, I'd love to kill a three and a
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: half year old. Um, that's kind of it's kind of
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: my goal anywhere I go. Really, I mean, I try
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: not to differentiate it too much from from where I'm at,
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: But you know, if I get out there and there's
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: just an abundant amount of those three and a half
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: year olds, maybe I'll try to be a little bit
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: more selective. But if I'm spending the time to drive
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: all the way out there, and and I don't want to,
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: I don't want to kill the first thing I see,
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: but I don't want to. I don't want to be
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: too picky and then go with an unfilled tag. Um,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: if there's anything that remotely makes me happy, I'm gonna
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna try to make it happen. So you'd shoot?
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: Would you shoot? Let let's say it's like a really
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: kind of like average run of the mill, three and
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: a half year old buck. You see the very first
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: night you're out, you're out there, you're like an hour
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: in and like like a nice buck, I oh it's
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: a nice buck. Definitely. A three year old comes walking by,
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: he's at twenty five yards, you're gonna shoot him right away?
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: Or do You're like, you gotta see what else is
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: out here. You've only been here an hour. Yeah, No,
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: that's that's that's a that's a conundrum I would face.
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: I probably would not shoot that buck the first night. Um,
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: if we're like, but then that's the old adage, you know,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: don't pass the don't pass the deer the first day
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: that you kill on the last day. So this is
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: North Dakota right further Yeah, right, so can other tag
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: I don't know. Um, I probably would only get one
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: if I did, you know, I probably only do one.
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: Um if you can even get a second teg, I
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: don't know. I don't know that. I don't know the
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: answer to that. But man, we found some nice just
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: like really quality sheds water out there, so I think
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: I have a decent idea of what's running out running
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: around out there. Um. So if it was something that
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: was like whoa, Okay, that that looks like a real
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: nice you know, first night, I probably would pull the trigger. Um.
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: But if it was just kind of like ah, if
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: if I questioned at all, I wouldn't. I don't know
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: if that gives you a real straight answer, because I
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: don't even know if I know. But um, it just
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: had to be a heat of the moment kind of thing.
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: I think. Now, what if you've got to no questions
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: to ask? Like nice buck? Definitely three, maybe four? Um,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: he's in front of you, but then the drop time
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: buck is a hundred yards behind him, but heading your way.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: Do you take the Yeah, nice buck, that's a sure thing.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: Or do you wait and see if the draft time
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: or will come by. Where are we at during the week, Uh,
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: we'll say we're middle of the week exactly, dead center.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: Oh man, you and your scenarios you did, Yeah, shoot
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: the one that was in front of me, and shoot
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: the one that was in front of me. Is that
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: the right call, Spencer? Uh? Yeah, I shoot that one.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: If you're out of state public land like that, for sure,
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: you shoot that buck. You get out of your tree stand,
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: you go scare the ship out of that buck so
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: he goes. Not turn the rest of the year market
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: on your map and go hunt him the next year.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: It sounds like a good plan, Dan, I thought you
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: were gonna say scare the ship off any deer that
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: are near marks stand. I can see that happening too. Um. Yeah, man,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: that's gonna be a really cool hunt. I'm yeah. In
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: a perfect world, I'll finish off Montana in like four
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: or five days and meet you there right in time.
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: And Um, like you said, we did see good sign
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: and I think there's some promise there, so for sure
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: the rest of you go ahead, Spencer. Will your standards change?
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: Maybe you already answered this, but will your standards change
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: like the last one or two days of that hunt?
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: Would you then shoot like a two and a half
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: year old if it came out? I probably wouldn't. Probably
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: wouldn't shoot a younger, dear, Um if I if I
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: think he's three and a half, i'd shoot him. I
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: probably wouldn't shoot a young deer just to fill a tag. Um. Um,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't. I haven't really even thought
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: about that. Um, that's a good question. Who is that
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: damn that asset? Yeah, I'll have to think about that one.
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: If I just wanted to fill my tag with the dough,
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: and again, I have to look at the regulations see
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: if I could even do that. Um, you know, I'm
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: not sure those honestate hunts. So it's always the last
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: five minutes of the last night when the big boy
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: rose through. Well that's how that's how it happens on
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: TV anyway, And everything on TV is reality, Josh exactly.
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: So I probably would not shoot a dough Dan, I
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: probably wouldn't shoot a do out there. I'm hoping to
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: kill a couple of dolls in Michigan this year. Um,
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: I don't think I shoot a dough out there. The
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: rest of your season, Josh, is kinda different than usual,
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: right this year. Yeah, it's kind of weird because of
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: our Ohio debacle. Um, so what's what's your plan for
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: the rest of the year. What kind of goals and
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: thoughts do you have about the rest of the season. Yeah,
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: it's been a different year, and um, you know, I'll
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: be completely honest, I was totally totally complacent with the
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: whole Ohio thing and and really just was relying on that.
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: And I don't know why it was, knowing the situation
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: that we were in, we knew it wasn't gonna be forever,
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: but I just kind of got lazy and didn't really
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: find any backup spots down there and um, you know,
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: paying for it now. But um, I kind of mainly
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: just relying on public land this year in Michigan. I've
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: got a couple of of opportunities where some some private
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: might work out. But um, the more I've been thinking,
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: I'm kind of excited about it. Um not being limited
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: to just a couple of spots. I've I've got quite
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: a few, um areas around me that I'm gonna check
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: out this year, and I'm just gonna try to be
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: real aggressive and um and not worry about not worry about,
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: you know, blowing something out. And I'm gonna kind of
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: just be aggressive all season long if I can and
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: get in some places that maybe I wouldn't have gone
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: in the past, and see see what I can make happen.
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: If if nothing happens, so be it. Um. But man,
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: it would be pretty cool if if I could run
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: into a three and a half year old Michigan and
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: public land, that'd be pretty cool. Um. I've got a
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: I've got a small place up north. My my in
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: laws have a little ten acres up up in northern
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: Michigan that I've got a camera out and I hung
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: a stand a couple of weeks ago and did a
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: couple of things up there to get that ready. UM,
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: try to hunt that maybe a little bit more this year.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: But um yeah, really really, I don't have any other
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: trail cameras out besides that. So I'm just gonna kinda
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: you go back the seat of my pants and see
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: what happens. And it's kind of exciting at the same time, UM,
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: not really being not really know on what's out there.
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: You know, Hey, I got a question, what what's the
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: chances that let's say you strike out in the Dakotas
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: you come you come home, and you know, you do
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: your thing in Michigan. But is there a chance that
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: you're being able to make a second trip out to
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: North Dakota to hunt. Yeah, that'd be a possibility if
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: I could. I could probably work that into my into
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: my schedule to get back out there, maybe for four
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: or five days or something. Um, I could probably make
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: that happen if I needed to. I hope I don't,
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: but UM, it could definitely definitely be an option. It's
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: a cool area. Yeah, it's just as a long drive.
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: Yeah that's super because yeah it's it's a long drive. Um,
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: so goals then this year, whether there being you're hoping
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: to kill a three and half yell in North Dakota
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: and then it's gonna be three and a half for
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: public land in Michigan too. Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna I'm
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: gonna go for it and see what happens. And like
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: I said, if if I don't kill a buck, I
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: don't kill a buck. Um applied for some public land
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: public land doe license stuff. I can kill a doe,
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: that'd be that'd be cool too. I mean, you don't
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: see a ton of them on public land. So, um,
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: is there is there anything you do differently this year?
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: Because because last year, I know you you did some
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: exploring of some of the public land around you where
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: you're at. Anything this year that you know you want
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: to do differently or that you learned from that experience
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: or anything. Yeah, yeah, check out more places. I kind
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: of I kind of got zeroed in on like two
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: different you know, two different pieces that I was going to.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: I'd i'd move around while I was there, But I
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: want to go check out some of these other spots that, um,
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: I've looked at on that and now I've kind of
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: walked some of them. Um, so I just want to.
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: I don't want to be I don't want to be
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: committed to just one spot or two spots. UM, just
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: be willing to kind of go outside of my comfort
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: zone check out some some new areas. Yeah. Did did
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: you guys try getting any private access in North Dakota
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: or is the public so expansive where you're at that
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: you don't need it? We didn't, Um, and it wasn't
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: It wasn't so much that, um, there's so much public.
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: It was more so that we just didn't enough time. Um,
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: we're kind of we're kind of more focused on shed
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: hunting than scouting. And we had you know, six days
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: or whatever, and we figured out hit these main public
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: spots we wanted to and then we also want to
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: check out this stuff in Montana. So then we went
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: to Montana to to do that because I wanted to
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: do a little shed hunting and scouting there as well.
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: So it was just more so the fact that if
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: we had more time down there, I think it definitely
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: would have made sense to try to get some permission, um,
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: because there was a lot of good look and stuff
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: that is under private ownership. UM. I think that's a
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: possibility once the season starts. You never know, especially out
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: there there's just not as many people, not as much pressure. Um,
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: there's probably a little bit better chance of getting permission
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: kind of last minute like that, especially you know early
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: bow season. Hey we're just here for three more days.
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: Any chance we could you know, sit out here a
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: couple of times. Um, there's a chance that could work out. Um,
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: but kind of like you said, Josh, hopefully don't need
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: to do that, but if you do. I believe that
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: North Dakota is a purple fence post state where if
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: it's not posted no hunting that you can legally trespass.
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: That's probably not very helpful with like archery equipment, but
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: maybe that would give you an indication of landowners that
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: are you know, possibly open to hunting if their land
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: isn't posted. That would give you better odds of you know,
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: finding a place that you could get permission for. Yeah,
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: that's such a that's such a weird thing to me,
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: Like I I never would even think about that because
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: I've forgot just in Michigan or wherever else, you would
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: never think that would be okay. But for those that
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: aren't familiar that can you explain that Spencer so there
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: are some states and it's fairly random. I'm not even
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: familiar with which other ones there are. I think maybe
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: one of the Carolinas is that way. North Dakota is
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: that way. Um. And then there's like some parts of
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: other states, like in South Dakota, for example, there are
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: some areas where if the property is not posted no hunting,
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: that you can then legally trespass and haunt that property. Now,
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: the regulations are more specific than that as far as
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: what's allowed and what's not allowed, but that's kind of
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: a simple way to put it. And there's also some
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: areas that, um, if the property isn't posted for no hunting,
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: that it's also acceptable to paint your corner post purple,
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: which then indicates no trespassing. M hm, wow that's unique.
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: What about, um? What about what are the laws over
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: there by you, Spencer? As far as recovering dear like
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: a lot of states by us here, like you can't
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: even you can't trespass even to recover a deer. You
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: need written permission to recover a deer over property lines?
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: What's that by you? So to recover a deer you
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: need permission? Um? But where I'm at Um, you know
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: it's uh, very small town field. You know all the
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: landowners around you. You you probably know where they live
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: or know their phone number. And on very rare occasions
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: I would say people have problems with that. But otherwise
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: it's you know, usually as easy as a phone call
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: or a go and knock on their door and they say, hell, yeah,
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: you know, go get it. We have. We have some
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: other unique laws too because of our pheasant hunting. Like, uh,
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: I believe you're allowed to make on armed retrievals of
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: small game like a pheasant if it lands on private property. Um.
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: Some people would get that confused with like deer recovery laws. Um.
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: But as far as like a deer goes, um to
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: cross the fence line or go into another property, you
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: need to have permission. M. Interesting. Um, it's hard to
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: keep track of this. All the different states have so
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: many different ways of approaching that kind of stuff. It's
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: just another reminder to me, how like, every time you
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: hunt somewhere new, you really need to like scour the
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: regulation books because every one of these states got wonky
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: different things like that. I uh, you can't make any assumptions.
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: I think it's probably the one thing you should always remember. Yes,
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: So I I know a few people who have hunted
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: North Dakota in the pastor at family in North Dakota,
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: And what I've been told is that it used to
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: be really great for that. Uh you know that not
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: a whole lot of landowners had stuff posted. But the
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: oil boom happened and you had a huge, huge influx
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: of um out of staters that were living there for
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: you know, six months, twelve months at a time, and
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: a lot of them were early twenties men or whatever.
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: That A lot of ground then became posted after that.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: So I think the North Dakota strategy of hunting like
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: that has changed, like in the last decade or so.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: Versus what it was like in the early two thousands,
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: you would have had a lot more opportunity. Um. But
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: that's just weird to think about. And maybe that'll flip
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: again here um as the oil industry kind of leaves
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: North Dakota. All right, that is an interesting thing to
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: think about. I have it. I have it pulled up here.
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: This is from the North Dakota Game and Fish website.
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: No hunting is allowed without permission from the landowner or
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: leasy on private lands. In North Dakota that have been posted.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: So there we go. But if it's on posted, if
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: it's on posted, yes, I believe look into that more
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: before you go after here. I believe that's the case. Okay,
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: that's good to know. Good little tip there, Spencer, thanks
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: for that artward pause here for the last break of
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: this episode, and just want to thank our partners at
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: White Tailed Properties for their support. And we're back today
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: with another one of my quick YouTube recommendations. They have
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: this land beat YouTube video series where they're getting all
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: such different advice recommendations as far as hunting and property management,
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: all sorts of things like that. And in one of
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: their more recent videos, it's titled Fall Food Plots Great
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: mid to late season hunting. White Tail Properties land specialist
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: Tom James walks us through what he likes to plant
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: in small woodland food plots. He likes to combine a
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: cereal grain like oats or cereal rye and brassicas and
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: I love that combination to That's something that I use
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: on my boom food plots. And in this quick video
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: Tom explains why that works so well, how he does it.
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: It's definitely a quick and helpful video. That I would recommend,
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: so check it out. We're at the White Tailed Properties
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: YouTube channel. If you want to learn more about their
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: specialists or their properties, you can head to white Tail
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: Properties dot com. Um. What about Well, you know what,
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: we better we better wrap this up a little bit here.
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: We gotta talk about my goals and some things going on.
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: But Dan had to drop off early, so you guys
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: now are in charge of grilling me um and making
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: me look like a fool if you want UM since
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: Dan can't do it. UM. You know, the only things
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: I guess I would say about my hunting season this year.
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: We all kind of know that I'm chasing Holyfield still
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: here in Michigan, UM, and I do have that North
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: Dakota and Montana hunt in the beginning, and then I've
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: got that Boundary Waters Minnesota hunt in the middle of October. UM,
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: and then it's gonna be a lot of Michigan stuff
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: after that. I'm trying to slip in a quick Nebraska
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: trip to UM. But you know, so, I just don't
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: know what the situation is going to be here at home.
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: I don't know if holy Fields still around. I do
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: get the shed in January, but I don't. I have
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: not had any sightings or anything of him since then.
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: I've been driving around my main Michigan properties try to
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: get eyes on Bucks. I have seen two good deer
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: within like half a mile three cores a mile of
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: that property. One was a really nice big eight pointer. Um.
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: Another one was almost just a big six. He does
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: have g threes, but they're like just barely an inch long,
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: So there might be an eight, might be a six technically,
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: but super tall, really tall times um braw times. You
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: saw a picture last night, Josh right, yea. Um, So
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: there's those couple of good Bucks in the general area.
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: But I haven't checked my summer trail cameras yet. I
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: just put them out a couple of weeks ago. I'm
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: not going to touch them until closer towards the end
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: of the month. I'm planning on trying to, like on
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: my main Michigan properties. I'm gonna try to do all
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: as much of my intrusion as possible just in like
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: a day or two period. So like in that one
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: day or two period, I'm gonna try to finish my
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: food plots, do my last couple of stand adjustments, check
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: the cameras, and they get out of there, So just
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: kind of have a flurry in a short amount of time,
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: but not a bunch of activity like every couple of days,
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: over and over and over again all through August. Um So,
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: I gotta get that finished up here in the next
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: week and half. Um So, I think you know here
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: in Michigan, holy Field is the number one goal. But
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: then a four year old, just about any four year
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: old I will probably take a shot at if it's
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: a good quality mature buck. Um. We do have two
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: tags here in the state. Um So I could always
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: depend on Holy feeling that second tag. And I've got
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: you know, my main Michigan spot where holy Field is
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: a couple of the little places. And then there's our
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: northern Michigan deer camp that me and further hunt um
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: be amazing too shoot a mature buck up there, and
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: as you've seen, Josh, we're getting some mature bucks on
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: camera finally, so that's a possibility. Um. And then I've
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: got this new property on the west side of the
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: state where I think there's a good chance of seeing
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: some good deer. I'm not sure exactly how much time
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: we're gonna be well spend over there, but at least
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: a week in November, I'm gonna be there. So it's
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: gonna be four year olds in Michigan with Holy Fields
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: the number one buck, that buck Survivor. There was a
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: three year old last year. If he shows back up,
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: which I haven't seen him yet, but if he shows
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: back up, I would love to get a crack at him,
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: since I have so many pictures and studings of him
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: last year. Um, Montana, North Dakota it's gonna be probably
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: a four year old or older. UM. Not gonna be
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: too terribly picky other than that. UM. And then Minnesota
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: it's gonna be anything. I think. If I see a deer,
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: I'll probably shoot any deer, just because I don't know
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: if we're gonna see any deer at all. It sounds
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: like it's big timber, big woods, few deer, very few sightings.
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: So it's more so like an adventure of just getting
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: in there and if you see a deer that's the success.
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: And getting it out um is a project in itself. UM.
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: So that's kind of my season's goals, you know, in
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: the main deer it's not like you know usually Josh,
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: We've got our Ohio property We've got a bunch of
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: bucks down there we're chasing that we've seen year after year,
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: but you know we don't have that this year. Um,
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: so it's gonna be kind of Michigan is the spot
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: with history. Everything else is going to be kind of
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: showing up brand new, figuring things out. But but kind
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: of like you said, Josh, I mean, that's that's kind
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: of exciting and it's in its own So are you
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: willing to I know in the past you said that
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: you don't want to take multiple deer off of your
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: holy Field property, But is that something that you would
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: consider this season that since I don't think you shot
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: one there last year, but would you take to this year? Yeah,
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: that's a that's a great point. Um. I haven't shot
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: a buck on that property. Um, since two thousand and fifteen.
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: That the first year I saw holy Field was two
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: killed a buck on that property opening night and then yeah,
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: I didn't try to shoot any other deer there because
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: of that one buck roll there. Um, and then the
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: subsequent subsequent years I've just been chasing holy Field. But
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: this year, yes, I would shoot multiple bucks on that
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: property this year, because like I just said, haven't taken
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: any deer off this property and three years, any bucks
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: off this property three years, and um, it would have
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: to be it has to be a really good one though.
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: It had to be like either one of these four
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: year olds I know, like survivor or one of these
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: no brainer dear. Um, you know, if it's like the
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: biggest buck I've ever had an opportunity in Michigan, Yeah,
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: I'm gonna take it because I could always still hunt
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: holy Field that second tag. But in years past, you know,
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: I've shot some three year olds on this property, So
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: I'm like, you know, it's nothing. It's not the kind
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: of buck that's like gonna send you over the edge.
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: But in this area, the three year old is not
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: terribly common either, So I've taken some deer like that.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: Um this year, no like twiners like that. It's either
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: gonna be like a no brainer, like drop your job,
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: gets you really pumped holy fielder survivor or just just
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: wait it out. Um. But I'm not budgeting a whole
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: bunch of time to that property either. You know, in
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: past years I hunted it too much early I think
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: when the past years when I was hunting holy Field.
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: So this year it's gonna be like Opening Night if
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: the conditions are right, and then nothing till November unless
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: I get some kind of intel that tells me that
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: I need to change that. Um. But you know, two
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: years ago I hunted and I've talked about this at
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: at Nasam, But two years ago I hunted like almost
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: every weekend for him because I kept thinking these little
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: mini cold fronts might get him moving. And then last
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: year I thought, he know, he historically starts moving around,
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: which is what he did the two years prior to that.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: So I thought, Okay, as soon as that date range hits,
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: I'm gonna start hunting him hard. And so I started
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: hunting him hardy and I didn't see him for like
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: seven eight days. UM. So I think I pushed it
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: too soon. Now he's a little bit older, I think
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: he's just even tightening up his daily activity even more
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: so this year, I'm gonna try to play it even
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: more cool and wait till October or November one and
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: then hunt him hard during that one time period where
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: he seems to be every year. The last three years,
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: he's been moving during that time frame on this property.
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: So I'm gonna kind of put all my chips into
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: that basket. Um unless you know of cameras running, I'll
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: be trying to observe from a distance. On the nights
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: I can get away and and and scout from a distance.
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: So if something that tells me to do something otherwise,
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: then I will just But that's kind of what I'm
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: working with. And um you know, I've been making all
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: sorts of different stand adjustments and property adjustments, doing a
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: few things differently with my food plots this year to
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: try and make those a little bit better. So you know,
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: each year that I've been hunting Holy Field, I've been
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: like trying to just sweeten things a little bit more,
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: just improve the stands. It's a little bit more improved,
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: the food plots, a little more improved. Whatever habitat work
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: I can do just a little bit more. Um So,
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: I definitely learned some things last year as far as
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: where I was seeing them. So I'm gonna be setting
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: up a few more stands this week and some new
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: locations based on what I learned last year. Um So
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: my focus here is gonna be much more back in
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: the cover, on the back of the property versus up
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: in the front towards that food that I focused on
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: the first couple of years. Um, but that's kind of
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: that's kind in my head's at right now, doing these
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: other haunts, doing these other haunts. Mark in Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana.
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: Do you worry at all about being able to age
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: a deer that's unfamiliar to you? You know some of
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: the like the area that you hunt in Montana, those
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: bucks seem like their bodies are smaller, they almost look malnourished.
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: They're not malnourished, but uh, you know, I think it's
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: very different than the deer you see in Michigan. Does
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: that worry you at all about being able to age
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: one of these bucks that you've never seen before? Yeah, yeah, No,
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: it definitely was something that I noticed, um last year
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: in particular, when I went to that property in Montana.
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: I was looking at these deer and thinking, uh, I
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: don't think I think that's just a two or three
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: year old. When I look back on video later in
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: the year and started thinking, maybe, you know, and not
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: only not only are the different bodies sides, but also
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: this is really early in the year. So a lot
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: of the criteria that we look at to try to
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: age bucks usually those things like how big is their
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: neck or how you know, where's their neck meet their
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: chests or different things like that. A lot of times
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: those things are much easier to distinguish when you get
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: closer to the rut. You know, in September, a lot
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: of these even mature buck will look younger in September,
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: much more sleek. Um. So I do think that's a
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: little bit of a challenge that I Um, I think
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: I've learned a little bit now that I've hunted out
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: there twice, But this year I'm definitely gonna be thinking
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: about that a little bit more. Um, maybe even look
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: at some pictures online or doing some different things just
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: to try to like make sure my eye is tuned
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: to that western white tail a little bit more, um
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: Because like I just think between the body size, the
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: time of the year, and even like the antler size,
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: it's just all just the ratio. It just seemed a
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: little different. Um. So yeah, that's that's definitely gonna be
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: on my mind. And then throwing it bucks still have
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: any velvet on. I mean that that makes it tougher too.
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: I Mean that's a good point, and you don't see
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: what you're talking about earlier spencer. I think I would
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: actively try not to shoot a velvet buck. So if
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: I had two bucks in front of me on our
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: North Dakota Montana hunt, I'm trying not to shoot the
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: velvet one. Um, I don't know why. I just don't
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: have that desire. And then number two, I don't want
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: to deal with it. I've heard it's a real challenge
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: to deal with velvet like lots of times it ends
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: up getting all messed up, or you need to pay
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: to get like this fake velvet to put on it
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: because they can't preserve it. How do you have a
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: plan for dealing with that? Uh? No, I do not,
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: And I'm not sure if it's like I'm not so
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: much like attracted to the idea of getting a velvet buck.
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: I think it's more that the hunting style is different, um,
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: you know, just like that time of year sitting at
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: tree stand is so different when it could be eighty
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: five degrees and there's mosquitoes and stuff. Um, and just
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: that their pattern is different, that they're still potentially on
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: their summer pattern. I think the challenge of something brand
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: new like to that something brand new like that is
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: is appealing to me and it's less about the velvet um,
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: but at the same time, that would be something unique
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: with a deer that I've never you know, had a
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: chance to harvest before. Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm I'm
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: right there with you as far as how much fun
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: is to start hunting that early September when I started
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: doing that, you know, two or three years ago, whatever
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: it it's I'm hooked on that, like, that has a
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: lot of fun. They're on that that pretty consistent bed
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: defeed pattern. They're on the following those summer habits. It's
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: a cool time year to be out there. I you know,
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: this is my third or fourth year not doing it,
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: and I think, Josh, you're gonna feel the same way.
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: So that's it's awesome to get out there at that point.
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: Did you have another question? I got a couple of
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: questions for you, and this is this isn't uh, this
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: is from Michigan. Are you worried and I thought this
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: is maybe where Spencer is going. Are you worried with
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: how many trips that you're taking that it could negatively
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: impact your ability to have a run in with Holy Field. Yeah, um,
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: I'm kind of taking the I'm almost swinging the pendulum
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: in the far opposite direction of last year, almost too far,
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: maybe because last year, because I was so obsessed with
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: holy Field, I canceled all my other trips and I
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: just hunted holy Field the whole year and I didn't
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: get shot anything. Now this year, I'm going the opposite.
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: I told myself, you know what, I'm not gonna let
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: my obsession over one buck like did find my whole season.
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna go do other fun stuff and I have
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: other experiences. So now all of a sudden, I've stacked
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: myself up with all these other trips. Um. That is
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: a little concerning to me. Um. But but the more
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: think about it, I really think that I only have
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: a handful of hunts in the season when I actually
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: have a real chance at that buck. I think, given
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: what I've seen now and as long as I'm there
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: on that during that right time frame, I think I
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: think leaving this property alone completely except for like seven days,
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: is better than like dabbling on a property like fourteen
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: times but scattered throughout the year. I think this is
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: like my my hypothesis right now. So yes, that's a possibility,
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: and I am going to have maybe a cell camera
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: two up there. So I'm gonna be kind of monitoring
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: the area, and if all of a sudden you start
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: showing up a bunch if I'm around home, I will,
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: you know, close enough to that property, I will change
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: that plan and go in there. But there's a possibility
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: could be in Minnesota or something or wherever Nebraska, and
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: I could get a bunch of daylight pictures of him,
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: and I might be kicking myself. Okay, here's here's a
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: scenario for you. It is that it is the night before,
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: the afternoon or whatever evening before you're leaving for Minnesota,
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: and you get a cell camera photo that holy Field
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: is sitting in one of year food plots in daylight.
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: The next day looks perfect. You could get in there
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: and potentially kill him. Are you leaving for Minnesota that
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: next morning? I am calling up Andy and saying I'm sorry,
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: I'm sorry, Andy, we gotta push the Minnesota trip back,
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: because yeah, I'm at least flexible on my dates on
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: that one, on most of these trips at least um
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: So yeah, I will definitely push if you're halfway. How
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: about if you're halfway to Minnesota. In that case, I'm
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: probably sticking with Minnesota because I think that Andy's a
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: nice guy, but he probably punched me in the head
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: if I turn this around and try to do that.
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: So I don't know. I feel like there's a good
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: chance it's something on these Michigan properties. I just don't
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: know if holy Field is gonna show, and if he
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: does show, I think there's a chance. Next next question,
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: are you planning on being more aggressive with dough harvest
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: on your main piece? Yes, Ish, I'm still in the
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: same boat as I am every year because this property,
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: I know I need to do more dough control on it.
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: But at the same time, I feel like if I
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: start being aggressive with dough control, it's gonna blow any
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: chance at Holyfield. So I'll probably do what I've done
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: in past years, but try to do a better job
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: of it. So I'll probably be targeting him on this property. Um,
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: and if he's still alive, you know, if I haven't
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: killed him in this December, I'll probably set like a
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: deadline like if I don't kill him by December fifteen
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: or eight or something like twenty, whatever it is. If
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: I don't get him by then, then I just have
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: to switch to dough hunting and um at that point,
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: just all right, he's made it this far. I gotta
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: try to kill some doughs and start start doing that.
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: And I'm gonna force you to come help me and
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: try to get some other friends to come help me.
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: Um because I need to be even. I need to
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: get more off this farm than I have in years past. Um. So,
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: so yeah, that's that's all what you mean. You know,
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: it's a dilemma have every year. I'd love to start
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: taking some doughes earlier in the season, but it's just,
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: you know how it is. It's so small here. If
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: any basically me where I shoot a doll in this property,
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: they could run into like one of the two main
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: betting areas and it would force me to completely blow out,
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: you know, the one mature buck in the area, and
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: and they just they won't tolerate that. If it happens once,
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: you're kind of s ol So that's that's a tough
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: thing about this, Hilaria. Anything else, gentleman, I got one
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: more question. Yeah, are you are you willing to go
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: after I think you did last year if I remember right,
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: But would you are you going to be willing to
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: hunt your place or the place where Holy Fields app
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: during the firearms season. Are you gonna You're gonna stick
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: with your sanctuary method and try to completely stay out
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: of there. I think I'm planning on sanctuary strategy again.
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: But if you know, if I'm if I'm seeing him
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: actively like that last day or two, I'm willing to
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: I'm willing to bend on that. I'm not. I'm I
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: don't need to be so locked on that. UM So, yeah,
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: I would, I would push it in hunt opening day
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: or something like that if I had a really good
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: reason to UM. But in general, I think that keeping
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: it relatively low pressured there is still I think that's
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: been a good thing. I don't think. I don't think
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: that that buck would be six years old this year
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: if I was hunting him hard during gun season, because
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: I just think there would have been too many chances
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: that I'd push him and he'd be on a neighbor's
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: where they're just letting guns guns fly. Now this year
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: is gonna be weird, though, because, as you know, Josh,
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: in a handful of counties across the state, they have
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: now implemented some new regulations because of c w D,
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: and they are now taking our two week firearm season,
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: and they're now extending that through the entire muzzleloader season.
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: So we have a two week firearm season, and then
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: in southern Michigan it's it's about a three week muzzleloader season,
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: maybe a little less than that, but somewhere around that timeframe.
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: Now that's all going to be general firearm. So there's
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: gonna be almost a five week general firearms season where
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: I hunt and mark. Can you can you clarify one
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: thing that that's for. That's for a sixteen county CWD
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: managements on. It's not everywhere in the state UM, and
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: not all of southern Michigan. There's sixteen counties where that's
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: gonna be. Yeah, you can find that all in on
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: Michigan's d and our website. Yes, so that's the counties
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: where CWT has been found and then all the counties
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: that touched them right basically well basically like UH surveillance
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: areas that they set up that they want to get
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: more deer tested on, and yes, most of them do
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: touch UM counties where cw D has been detected. Yeah,
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: So so that's one of the new things we're gonna
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: be dealing with this year. I have some concerns, you know,
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: just persist like selfishly about how that's going to impact
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: like my own personal hunting. UM, I worry a little bit.
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: But at the same time, you know, as you know, Josh,
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: you've been well, you've heard all the different controversy around
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: these new regulations. Has been a lot of people worried
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: about it, upset about it, lots of opinions about what's happening. UM.
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: I was gonna try to get into all that today,
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: but maybe we'll say it for another time because we're
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: kind of running out of the podcast, like all in
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: its own probably and you could probably get some you
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: should probably get some people that are much more versed
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: in it than I am, or have a have some
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: more background and have a biologist, a couple of biologists on.
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: I could really go into it. Um. But yeah, it's
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: it's there's been a ton of drum over it, and
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: there's just a lot of passionate deer hunters here in Michigan,
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: and UM, a lot of people that have been working
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: for a long time to to see some good change
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: here and you know, may not be the case right now,
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: we will see. UM, So I'm gonna say we wrapped
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: this one up here, um, because I've got other things
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: I got to run off to actually, but we have
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: got Josh, your number one goal is to kill a
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: three and a half year old in North Dakota or
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: public Liane Michigan, would you say that's it? Yeah, Yeah,
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: that's it. And Spencer, your number one goal is to
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: kill uh forest or a buck like that? Would you agree? Yeah?
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: It made sure, velvet buck, okay. And my number one
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: goal is to kill holy Field. And Dan isn't here,
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: so we can make up a goal for him. Um,
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: but I'm gonna say it's probably to kill Narlie. Charlie,
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: I guess. So that's that's what we got ahead of us.
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: We have hunting seasons kicking off for at least the
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: three of us were kicking off in two weeks. Dan
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: will be six weeks from now. Um. But over the
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: next four months here on the podcast, I'm going to
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: try to have both of you guys, and of course
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: Dan and myself sharing what's going on through our journeys
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: and whatnot, and Spencer speaking of following along with hunting
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: season and what's going on. We are back us here
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: in two thousand and eighteen with the third season of Radio.
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: Right Yes, September five is the first planned episode of
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: season three eut Radio. So for those who aren't familiar,
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: For people new to the podcast, can you give us
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: like the thirty second cliff notes on what radio is
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: what they have to expect. So each week through the
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: fall from September to January, that's what we did last year.
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: I will talk to notable white tail experts across the
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: country and see what they're getting for deer movement, UM
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: and hopefully bring you the most timely uh buck intel
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: anywhere possible. UM. You know, we will be recording these
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: interviews with people on like Tuesday, episode goes up Wednesday,
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: and uh you know that today you'll be able to
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: listen and hear what they're predicting for buck movement, what
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: they've been seeing for buck movement. Uh. You know, we'll
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: talk about factors like moon phases, weather, crops, dad is
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: hunting pressure, all those different things, uh, with hopes of
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: providing you with uh you know, like I said, the
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: most timely dear intel available. Yeah, it has been a
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: really well received, UM kind of new format that we
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: added to the show. People are really finding it helpful.
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: So like Spencer mentioned first week in September, you're gonna
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: start getting too wired Hunt podcasts a week. The RUT
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: Radio will be on on Wednesday, are regular episodes on Thursday.
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: So between those two um as you just said, lots
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: of great real time information that can help you guys,
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: and you'll be able to follow along with the four
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: of our hunts and seasons pretty close to real time
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: as well. So Spencer further appreciate you guys joining me today.
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: And that is it for us today. So, like I
