- 2:01Of course. The big story the comments made on Live radio and Cincinnati
- 2:07by WVU men's basketball coach Bob Huggins yesterday. Now, this went viral yesterday
- 2:10afternoon after the comments were made by Hugs on the Bill Cunningham Show and WLW
- 2:15Radio and Cincinnati. Coach referred to fans at Xavier University as Catholic blank slur
- 2:23for homosexuals. The fallouts hit hard. Coach released a statement apologizing for his
- 2:29comments. University did as well. Huggins then pulled out of a scheduled speaking
- 2:34engagement with other WVU folks and wheeling last night at the coach's caravan up there.
- 2:38The story is now national ESPN, Fox News, CNN, others all
- 2:43reported USA Today and others calling for the firing of coach Huggins, which could
- 2:47well happen. I'm gonna get to the story later, but we have a
- 2:51loaded up show, as you've heard me talking about yesterday, Dirty Birds home
- 2:55openers tonight. The guy manager Billy Horneaton Douglas the studio. We're going to
- 2:59talk to them here in a couple moments also have coming up a little bit
- 3:01later on Ryan Weld, state senator, who is running for Attorney General.
- 3:06He has to come on to refute the comments by state Senator Mike Stewart,
- 3:09who was also running for a GW. Mike, of course, was on
- 3:13the show last weekend. I've got Ken Reid Canada for Secretary of State coming
- 3:16up as well. Those were all set all these interviews before the Huggins situation
- 3:22yesterday. I will say this show that the text lines were open throughout the
- 3:24show at three or four nine three five five zero zero eight again into truth
- 3:29Pharmacy text three or four nine three five five zero zero eight. I will
- 3:31get to the Huggins story later on in the meantime, If you want to
- 3:35text in your thoughts and comments, load up the text line and I'll read
- 3:38as many of them as I can. A little bit later on the show,
- 3:40courtesy of Fruth Pharmacy. And also in the middle of all that,
- 3:45we got Coke on Strike two story pictures posted to that at WV metro news
- 3:50dot com. So it is a loaded up show. Folks, get the
- 3:53comments on Huggins, go ahead and textos in. We'll get them to him
- 3:55a little bit later on, and I will talk about it as well.
- 3:59But let's talk about some baseball. I got eating Douglas and I got to
- 4:02manager Billy Horne at the Dirty Birds in the studio. Morning, guys,
- 4:05how are you? Good morning, Good morning, doing well for having us?
- 4:09And you know what I told you in the green room, I said,
- 4:12guys, I gotta hit this hug and saying out. But I will
- 4:14not ask either one of you to comment on just or my other guests for
- 4:16that matter, they will not be asked to comment on. It is opening
- 4:19night, coach, How excited are right to be playing at home tonight?
- 4:24We're excited to finally be home. It seems like we had about thirty eight
- 4:28games on the road, you know, to start the season, but we're
- 4:30really excited to finally be home. Sixteen of our next nineteen games are over
- 4:35at gomart which is a nice relief for us, a lot less traveling.
- 4:40But we did have a little preview a couple of weeks ago. You know,
- 4:42we had the bananas in town. We had packed houses. We had
- 4:45a packed house both nights, excuse me, and um, you know,
- 4:47we're looking looking forward to the same the fans coming out and the rowdies,
- 4:51the toasties, the locals, and you know, hopefully we attracted some new
- 4:56more fans over the uh the offseason. You got folks like eating here and
- 5:00everyone else in the front office really working their tails off promoting and it should
- 5:03be a real fun and exciting night. And when people come out to the
- 5:06ballpark, I mean they're not only going to see a new name, We've
- 5:09talked about that, but they're also going to see if they haven't, if
- 5:12they weren't there for the bands, They're going to see new plane service even
- 5:14talk about them. Yeah, we've got artificial turf for synthetic turf now,
- 5:17and I mean the amount of extra events that we've have says enough about it.
- 5:21I mean we're hosting all of TeX's home games, some Marshall games,
- 5:25and now we've got all these Dirty Birds games. And on top of that,
- 5:28we have the MBC tournament coming up this week with it, so tripleheaders
- 5:31every single day this week. Yeah, which means long hours for the Dirty
- 5:36Birds. I mean, I'm running three shows a day now, so it's
- 5:40it's a lot, but it's awesome because we've got people coming from Frostburg Maryland
- 5:44because Frostburg's in the tournament Concord and then you season it States in it.
- 5:47So we'll have a lot of local people at the park and then they get
- 5:50to stay for the our game after or come before. Now when people come
- 5:55out for opening night and there's nothing like and by the way, the weather
- 5:58is going to be great. What they tell us. There's still a chance
- 6:00of some showers and thunderstorms like early in the day, but all the chance
- 6:03pretty much dissipates by about mid day, if even that. So uh so,
- 6:08so that's good stuff. What do people, what do you have plan
- 6:10for tonight? It's opening night? We had it's opening night. We've got
- 6:13half price beer, buy one, get one hot dogs. Truly Tuesdays is
- 6:16something new that I learned yesterday. So all truies are three dollars, so
- 6:19that's fine. We've got moonshine slushies. We've got baseball bingo presented by AARP.
- 6:25We've got Governor Jim Justice and the first Lady, Cathy Justice and baby
- 6:30dog coming to throw out the first Governor set to throw out the ceremonial first
- 6:33pitch. Have you've done? He's scouting on the Governor to see what kind
- 6:35of an army's get coach. Not bad, not bad. We had a
- 6:39chance to meet with him last year, met him a couple of weeks ago.
- 6:42But I think, you know, I'll respect him. I think everybody's
- 6:45really excited to see baby dog. Yeah exactly, the real governor of real
- 6:50of West Virginia. Just so many great things, you know, going on
- 6:54to ballparking. It is um you know, it was interesting the way the
- 6:57schedule worked out. Like you said to coach, it looked like you guests
- 6:59had like some games on the road to start the season and you didn't get
- 7:02all those games in because some were rained out. It was cold, it
- 7:05was rainy, I mean, it was just yeah, it was your typical
- 7:10Northeast you know, quote unquote spring summer weather. So but you know,
- 7:14even though you said earlier, you know, we're gonna get a little rain
- 7:15during the day, it doesn't matter. We have the turfs, right,
- 7:17Yeah, so we're gonna play some baseball to night, and it's uh,
- 7:20you know, it's good, exciting fun, you know, family fund for
- 7:24the community. And again we're excited about our our roster. We've got really
- 7:28really good baseball players and really really good young men, so really good dudes
- 7:31in that clubhouse and associated with the organization. So we're pumped to get going
- 7:35finally. And you've got a lot of different promotions throughout the year and need
- 7:39and you're on from time to time to talk about it. I know we're
- 7:41gonna be the Pepperoni Rolls one night, and we've got all this, all
- 7:44this other, all this other stuff going on as well. There's so much.
- 7:46We've got Pepperoni roles on July fifteenth, through playing as our Latin identity
- 7:50this year, which will appear in a few weeks. We're playing as the
- 7:54Charlies and the Charleston Charlies will make their first debut of the twenty twenty three
- 7:57season this Thursday. Firework every Saturday, giveaways every Friday. We'll have our
- 8:03first T shirt giveaway on Friday, sponsored by Prevent Suicide West Virginia. So
- 8:07there's so much happening this week and in the coming weeks and throughout this whole
- 8:11summer. So we want nothing but for families to come out and have a
- 8:13good time. First pitch Tonight is six thirty five, six thirty five with
- 8:18the Governor and the First Lady and baby Dog and baby dog. I'm gonna
- 8:20see if baby dog can be the first catch. Okay, I think that'll
- 8:24do it all. I see I see baby dog in TV. I don't
- 8:28know that baby dog is really into that kind of stuff. I don't know.
- 8:30It doesn't seem like much of a fetcher to me now. It just
- 8:33seems kind of just nice and relaxed and just kind of pointing the finger,
- 8:37Hey, you do this, you do this, you do that, kind
- 8:39of like Eaton does. Oh yeah, oh yeah, yep. Well,
- 8:43guys, it's great to appreciate. No, it's a busy day for you,

- 12:24State, coming up a little bit later on the show, plus more on
- 12:26the Bob Huggins situation. Republican candidate for Attorney General State Senator Ryan Weld is
- 12:33with us this morning. Good morning, sir, how are you. I'm
- 12:35well, Thanks for having me here at the Loaded up show and you're right
- 12:37in the middle of all of it today, madam. Thank you for being
- 12:41here. And I'm sure Ryan you heard the interview with your fellow fellow Senator
- 12:46Mike Stewart last week on the show Mister Tude, of course, also state
- 12:48senator, also candidate for attorney general, he called out your voting record on
- 12:54several bills, including transgender issues, unemployment, campus kerry, etc. I
- 12:58will give you the floor to respond to whatever you would like. Well,
- 13:01great, thank you. Yeah. And it's unfortunate, Dave, because you
- 13:05know, I've been in three campaigns so far, and at no point in
- 13:09time in any of those campaigns have I felt the need to call out or
- 13:11make outrageous or false claims about my opponents. Because to me, my campaigns
- 13:16have always been about me, what I've done, what I'm gonna do for
- 13:22the people that who elect me, in my background, and you know,
- 13:24and for someone to come on like that and say those kinds of things that
- 13:30you know, for the most part, weren't even true, it makes me,
- 13:33you know, I'm going to come on and I'm going to defend myself.
- 13:35And so you know, he got in the race on Tuesday and on
- 13:39Thursdays on your show attacking me like that, So so much for Reagan's eleventh
- 13:45Commandment. It's odd that you would bring that up because the very next thing
- 13:48I was going to say was I guess someone never heard of Ronald Reagan's commandment
- 13:52that you never speak ill of other Republicans. That was literally the next thing
- 13:56I was gonna say. Yep, and that's just unfortunate. And so,
- 14:00you know, one of the things, and this is the first thing that
- 14:01I want to address, and this is the thing that I think. It
- 14:05takes a lot to make me angry, but the thing that made me the
- 14:07most angry is to try to denigrate or call into question. You know the
- 14:11fact that I didn't go to law school to US thirty one, Well,
- 14:15you know why I went to law school when I was thirty one and not
- 14:16my twenties, because I was in a military. Because I spent the vast
- 14:22majority of the time in my twenties and until I was thirty one on active
- 14:26duty. Thank you for your service, thank you. I was in Afghanistan
- 14:30when I got my acceptance letter to du Kane Law. That's why I didn't
- 14:33go to law school to US thirty one. And so to try to say
- 14:39that your time sitting behind a desk for those years while I was in a
- 14:43military learning lessons on leadership, learning the importance of service before self is it's
- 14:50about as low as you can go. It's about as it Just that makes
- 14:58me more upset than anything to try to denigrate the reason and call into question
- 15:03through some sort of misnomer why it was that I didn't go to law school
- 15:09until I was thirty one. Because that's why. Because I was serving,
- 15:13because I was in DC, because I was in Germany, because I was
- 15:16in Texas, because I was in Afghanistan. You know what. I came
- 15:20back home. I went to law school and I became a prosecutor, and
- 15:24so I wasn't just the administrator of some office the prosecuted people. I actually
- 15:30prosecuted people. Now I'm a lawyer in private practice. I've been the vice
- 15:35chair of the Judiciary Committee the entire time. I've been in the Senate for
- 15:39seven sessions, now the majority whip. This afternoon, I'm going to go
- 15:45argue in front of our state Supreme Court and on behalf of a client of
- 15:46mine, because that's what I do. Do you know who's never argued in
- 15:50front of the State Supreme Court, The person making these claims about me.
- 15:56So I'm more than happy to stack up my legal experience and the experiences that
- 16:00I've had throughout my life against anyone else. In his campaign, talking with
- 16:04Senator Ryan Wild who's also a candidate for attorney general, he brought into questions
- 16:08your voting record, Ryan, on several things, from the transgender bill to
- 16:15campus carry, so on and so forth. Did you like to address any
- 16:18of those. Yeah, sure, so. A couple of years ago,
- 16:19I forget how many years ago. You know, we had a bill talking
- 16:22about, you know, transgender people in women's sports, and I fully agree
- 16:30with the fact that a man should not be playing in women's sports. You
- 16:33know, I was an athlete in high school. I was an athlete in
- 16:36college. Well, the bills that we had in the Senate pool it was
- 16:41amended and changed to include college athletics in that bill when it started out just
- 16:45in high school sports. Well, we don't have any control over the NC
- 16:49double A. They're a private entity. And as a former college athlete,
- 16:55nobody dislikes the NC double A more than me. Nobody, trust me.
- 16:57I wanted to give twenty dollars back to a parent of a kid who I
- 17:02gave swim lessons to because I violated NC double A rules. I was broke.
- 17:06I had twenty dollars back. So by including that bill or by including
- 17:11the NC double A and that bill. You know, the Governor South Dakota,
- 17:14Christiano vetoted bill a couple of years ago because it had the NC DOUBLEA
- 17:17and she was afraid what the NC DOUBLEA was going to do and be punitive
- 17:18towards South Dakota collegiate athletes. And I was concerned for the same exact reason.
- 17:25And so that's why I voted against that bill, mainly because of the
- 17:27NCAA. Is what you're saying, Yeah, you would have had no issue.
- 17:30I'm not want to put words in your mouth, but you would have
- 17:33not had an issue with it being with a similar bill being addressed if it
- 17:37did not contain the NC double A, zero issue. And I would have
- 17:38voted for it every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Okay.
- 17:42So, and then you talk about Campus Kerry A couple of years ago.
- 17:45I voted against that bill because it harmed small colleges. It only took into
- 17:51account Marshall WVU in the way that it regulated everything and some of the other
- 17:56stipulations. I represent two small scholleges in my West Liberty and West Virginia northern
- 18:02community, and it was made clear they weren't going to make any changes to
- 18:06accommodate smaller colleges. So do we come to Charleston to vote in the interest
- 18:12to those that we're supposed to represent, But do we come to Charleston just
- 18:17to say, you know what, I'm blanket just voting for everything so I
- 18:18can use it as a campaign talking point, and I don't care if it
- 18:22hurts somebody or an entity that I represent. I mean's what is our purpose
- 18:26here in Charleston. So when that bill came up this past session, and
- 18:30there had been changes that were made that made it more reflective of both big
- 18:33and small colleges, I voted for it and didn't have an issue with it.
- 18:38But I'm not just going to come down here blindly and say, well,
- 18:41it's a gun bill, and so no matter what it is or if
- 18:44it hurts people that I represent, I'm just going to vote for it.
- 18:47So and that was my top process several years ago. And when it came
- 18:51up this year and protected those smaller schools, didn't have any issue whatsoever.
- 18:56And you know, everybody likes to people and I know this word was used
- 19:02rhinos rhino it's a dirty word. Well, I don't just talk about being
- 19:08a conservative. I actually have a pretty conservative voting record. You know,
- 19:12we talk about all the things that the legislature has done throughout the past couple
- 19:15of years. When we're talking about, you know, passing right to work
- 19:21to protect West Virginia's from forest unionism, all the school choice stuff, holding
- 19:25the line on flat budgets, all these years, pro life bills that have
- 19:27gotten done, tort reform, constitutional care, dave in all these years,
- 19:33I've been in the leadership in the Senate. So all that stuff doesn't and
- 19:37I'm voted for all of that stuff. All that stuff doesn't happen in a
- 19:41vacuum. It happens because you have conservative leadership in the legislature of which I'm
- 19:45in that leadership. And all those bills happen because leadership helped make them happen.
- 19:49And I'm a part of that, and I have supported all of that.
- 19:52I've voted for that. I made sure that was part of our agenda.
- 19:57And so don't just talk about it. I have a voting record to
- 20:02prove it. And to further that, you know, there's an organization called
- 20:07the American Conservative Union and if you know anything about it, you know they
- 20:11had they give awards to legislators across the country based on their voting record,
- 20:17and so every year I've been in a legislature, I ever see the Conservative
- 20:18Achievement Award the American Conservative Union. They don't exactly hand that award out to
- 20:25rhinos, and so every year I've gotten that awards. So someone can make
- 20:30those claims about me, but I have an actual record that backs it up,
- 20:33and so I'm happy to stack mine against anybody else's. The term rhino,
- 20:38I think is and again we're talking to State Senator Ryan wild as a
- 20:41candidate for Attorney General next year's election. The term rhinos stone out a lot,
- 20:47in my opinion, and as you said, it's become a slur.
- 20:48It's with him, a dirty word, so to speak, because you're not
- 20:52Republican enough. And the only I guess, the only question that I would
- 20:56have is who sets that standard? Now, this is just me talking about
- 21:00for you, this is just meet us. Who sets that standard? Yes,
- 21:02the Republican Party as well as the Democratic Party have their own platform and
- 21:04so on, and so I just I think it's an arbitrary term in my
- 21:08opinion because it depends on how you look at in my opinion, yep,
- 21:12yeah, it's it's arbitrary to to you know, are you conservative? I
- 21:18don't know who's who's making that definition, and so I think that there are
- 21:22certain things that we can look to. You know, what are the tenants
- 21:25of the Republican Party, small government, less regulation, you know, individual
- 21:30freedom? And have I voted for for things that support those tenants of the
- 21:33Republican Party? Yep, I sure have. And it's not just I voted
- 21:38for these things, and you know, to prove that I'm, you know,
- 21:44the conservative in the race, which I fully believe that I am,
- 21:47and I have a record to show it. But it's also, Dave,
- 21:49this is about getting things done and being effective in your job, you know.
- 21:56And I heard him talking about that he got four bills done this past
- 21:59session. Well I didn't know. First off, I didn't know that was
- 22:02an actual like measuring stick on how effective you were. So I went back
- 22:07and I looked at what I had done. I didn't I never kept track.
- 22:11I just wanted to get certain things done. I never counted on how
- 22:15many bills I got done. And so my first session in the Senate,
- 22:19I got seven of my bills signed into law, So seven seems like it's
- 22:23more than four. But all I remember thinking back then was I feel like
- 22:26I didn't get a whole lot done this session. So I got to come
- 22:30back next session, my second one, and work harder and get more things
- 22:33done. And so I did. But then I looked the overall body of
- 22:40work that I've done and I had to count because I've never done this before.
- 22:41I never go back through and counted my bills. So in the years
- 22:45I've been in the legislature, I've had sixty six of my lead sponsor bills
- 22:49be signed into law. So if four bills is your number of greatness,
- 22:59then you'd have to be in the legislature for sixteen years to get done what
- 23:03I've gotten done in nine years. But again, the number has never been
- 23:07the important thing to me. It's what these bills do? You know?
- 23:11This past session I had to build. It was signed in a law that
- 23:15bands selling property at state tax sils to countries like China and Russia. We're
- 23:22the first state in the country to do that, first state. That was
- 23:25my bill re established the State Veterans Court Program to help veterans and service members
- 23:30that are caught up in a criminal justice system created our state's criminal Narcotics Conspiracy
- 23:37Law. The prosecutors all over the state now use to go after big drug
- 23:40dealers, holding drug dealers accountable for deaths they cause with the product they sell.
- 23:45Ensuring that all West Virginia members of National Guard Units Reserve units have in
- 23:52state tuition for their service. Ensuring that all veterans in the state can open
- 23:56a business without having to pay fees to the state in order to do so.
- 23:59And it goes on and on, and I think that I've had quality
- 24:02bills, not just about a number, it's about quality bills that affect West
- 24:03Virginia's lives. We're talking about State Senator State Senator Ryan Wild who's also going
- 24:10to be a candidate for Attorney General. Fivety Live is brought to you parted

- 24:26away. Uh. And of course we're in a in this mode now where
- 24:30campaigns are constantly going uh and and so it's gonna be it's already gotten ugly.
- 24:38I think between you and Mike Stewartan, it's probably gonna get even for
- 24:41no good reasons. For no good reason, we're in the Senate together,
- 24:45we're both Republicans. This race could have been about the issues and talking.
- 24:49Is it too late? I mean, can we can we get it back
- 24:52to make a little bit more civil? In your opinion? Well, I
- 24:56think you'd have to ask him that question, because moving forward, I'm going
- 24:59to continue you to talk about my accomplishments, talk about who I am,
- 25:03who I am as a person, who I am as a candidate, my
- 25:07voting record, things that I've done and things that I will do. Is
- 25:11the state's next attorney general? I mean, it's not about somebody else.
- 25:17You know, you're talking about why the hurry? We got twelve months on
- 25:21this campaign, and I would have to say, you know, why the
- 25:22hurry? You know, my opponent, he was in the Senate for a
- 25:26month before he started talking about running for another office. Four days after our
- 25:32first session, four days he already filed to run for something else. I
- 25:36mean, that's a pretty big slap in the face to the people that you're
- 25:38supposed to represent that I mean, they just a stepping stone. I mean,
- 25:42you couldn't wait to get out of that Apparently you can't wait to get
- 25:45out of that office that they elected you to. So what's the rush?
- 25:51Why jump into running a campaign like this when we could just be civil about
- 25:56things? And I plan on moving forward and talking about again myself, things
- 26:02that I've accomplished as a legislator all these years, my experiences as a legislative
- 26:07leader, as a prosecutor, as an officer in the Air Force. While

- 29:53Hollywood. Jeff Petty as our producer Today Tech says Mike Stewart would never
- 29:59under stand service before self according to a texture, Texture says good pushback by
- 30:04Weld. If you're gonna make claims, you better know what you are talking
- 30:10about. What legislation has he worked to improve, change or to introduce in
- 30:14regards to elections. I don't know if that was meant for welld or that's
- 30:18meant for Ken Reid. Just coming up here momentarily, But okay, Well
- 30:22asked Well next time, and I'll ask Ken Reid here momentarily. Text set
- 30:29for Ryan Well. There's nothing complex about making sure that biological boys play male
- 30:33sports and biological girls play female sports. It's pretty simple. Stuart nor Well
- 30:40should be running on their success against drugs. Druggs are winning against both of
- 30:44their efforts. According to a text or Texture says, the purpose of the
- 30:48Republican Party is to do what's best for the Republican Party, regardless of how
- 30:51it impacts the community. Mike Stewart is a grade A rubber stamp stooge for
- 30:56the Republican Party. Text says wells campaign strategy of self defense not a great
- 31:03strategy. Stewart's going to clean his clock. Tex says dear mister Well,
- 31:07letting your opponent dictate your emotion and control the narrative is a terrible look,
- 31:11and Texture says he's no different than the other guy. Well, I want
- 31:17to disagree with that particular text because I think that there are a lot of
- 31:19differences between Mike Stewart and Ryan Well. And I'm not picking sides. I'm
- 31:22just saying there are a lot of differences. But hey, the challenge has
- 31:26been issued, and who knows who else is going to run for attorney general.
- 31:30Those are just the two that we know about it. But it's been
- 31:33said, and I know Mike Stewart pretty well. Knew Mike Stewart would be
- 31:36up to it too, So Hollywood, we may have to get the wrestling
- 31:37ring out here. We'll just have those two in here together. I've got
- 31:41the Huggins text to get to and I'm going to get to those here momentarily
- 31:45on the Bob Huggins situation. But I want to welcome to the show now,
- 31:47Republican candidate for West Virginia's Secretary of State can read. Mister read,
- 31:49Good morning, and welcome to the show. Well, thank you, James.
- 31:53I appreciate you have me on the show. Thank you for being here.
- 31:56Before we get into the candidacy, let's talk about you. Give us
- 32:00a bio on Ken Reid. Who are you? Uh? My name is
- 32:04Ken Reid, and I'm a born and actually I was born in Weird in
- 32:07West Virginia, and I grew up in the northern Panhandal went to Brook High
- 32:12School, graduating eighty six, and moved on to college, went to Morgantown,
- 32:17WU, went the pharmacy school on the pharmacist by trade, and my
- 32:24wife there and then as um. My father used to tell me, you
- 32:30always kind of end up where your wife's mother lives, and so here I
- 32:34am an Eastern Panandal smart guy, a smart guy. Yeah, that's that's
- 32:42the old those old things has come out he's pretty true. Yeah, I
- 32:45moved out here. It was a good move. Um man, I've been
- 32:49out here ever since, um since nineteen ninety two worked for some team pharmacy
- 32:55and then then uh ninety eight, decided to try my hand, uh myself
- 33:00with owning my own small business and opened up my first pharmacy in Berkeley Springs,
- 33:06which is in Morten County, and then from there it just kind of
- 33:08kept going. At one time I had seven pharmacies in four states, Ohio,
- 33:15West Virginia, and Maryland and Virginia. Since pared that down to just
- 33:22three three states, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia, with a majority
- 33:24of our stories being here in eastern Panandal and Morgan and Berkeley County. Um
- 33:31open decided I was gonna when I was in college, I always had that
- 33:36to do list, and uh, you know, I'm just all college mails
- 33:38want to open a bar one time. So I opened a restaurant in Morden
- 33:43County about five years ago, and I checked that off the list, Keary
- 33:47Grille, And so far everything's uh kind of moving down the road way at
- 33:52least I planned it to be. And uh, and I have four kids
- 33:55with my wife and they're all doing well, they're all moving in different directions.
- 34:04Is that kids intending to do? But in the nut shell, that's
- 34:07that's me. So with all that being said, Ken, why do you
- 34:09want to be secretary of State? Uh? Secretary of State? I'm I've
- 34:15been in healthcare for twenty five thirty years, and I'm I'm ready. I
- 34:21think I'm ready to move on. The healthcare has gotten extremely difficult to work
- 34:27in, especially with how government treats us. And I've been screaming and taught
- 34:31my lung for years about TIA and Medicare and all these other entities that are
- 34:37out there, federal governments that kind of dictate, dictate rules to you.
- 34:40And I just I'm getting to the point in my life. I'm fifty five
- 34:45now, and uh I got into public service back and well, I ran
- 34:52for Congress in two tho fourteen. I don't know if a lot of people
- 34:55remember that, but twenty fourteen I did challenge out to Mooney and six others
- 35:00while I sit, they five others for that congressional seat and I came in
- 35:05seconds in that race and then run after that. My wife asked me that
- 35:08you know the county commissioner job is opening up here, and she's like,
- 35:13you would you would be really good at that, And so I decided to
- 35:19go ahead and run for a county commissioner and won that seat. And then,
- 35:22UH, that's that is definitely where the rubber meets the road. UM
- 35:25in government. It doesn't get any more more intense than that. UH did
- 35:31that for four years, and I ran for delegates of Berkeley and Morgan County
- 35:37and won that seat. And then we got redistricted the next year, and
- 35:44I kind of redistrict. I kind of jerrymanor myself out of the district.
- 35:47The UH and I do it again. To be quite honest with you,
- 35:51the I was I was extremely concerned about uh, Morgan County having a delegate
- 35:59because that was it's a split difference between Berkeley and Morden County, and Berkeley
- 36:02County is growing so much faster than other counties in this entire state. And
- 36:09so we created a box that included most of Delicate Miller's voters instead of mine.
- 36:16But what that did is that guaranteed that county to have a delegate for
- 36:22next least next ten years. So I do it again. I wouldn't think
- 36:24twice about it. Okay, So, but I mean, why is it
- 36:29that that you want to be secretary of State? I mean, at this
- 36:30point, you've done all these other things. Why why is it that's all
- 36:35right, it's all right. Why Why do you want to be You're a
- 36:37good man? Why do you want to be secretary of state? Because let
- 36:40me just say this, we already let me just throw this and we already
- 36:43we have at least two other folks on the Republican primary delicate. Christ Pritt
- 36:46from here in Kanaga County announced his intention to run for Secretary of State,
- 36:50Putnam County Clerk Bryan Wood and out statewide yesterday on Talk Client that he'd be
- 36:53running for secretary of course, listeners to this show that was kind of old
- 36:57news since he announced it on the show several months ago. So with Delegate
- 37:00Print and Putnam County Clerk would in the race, and there could possibly be
- 37:04more why do you want to do this? And what makes ken read the
- 37:07better candidate? I think it's basically I want to do maybe front of my
- 37:10experience. I think I'm probably one of the most experienced candidate out there,
- 37:15just with my executive Secretary States in executive position, and it's it's right down
- 37:21my alley. With me being accounty commissioner. We deal with We've dealt with
- 37:25canvassing the elections. Also the on the business organization Division's part, that's right
- 37:32down in my value. I've been healing with Secretary of State's office for probably
- 37:36thirty some years on that in that area, and I just think I would
- 37:40be an excellent person to follow Mac Warner, who's done a great job in
- 37:47that position going forward. And you know the thing about with the secretary and
- 37:53people have heard me when I talked to Brian Wood about this and to Chris
- 37:57Pritt of two of your opponents. As I say, there could be more
- 38:00on the show before. And I think it's interesting that you bring up business
- 38:05because sometimes when people think about the Secretary of State's Office, can they only
- 38:07think about elections because that's the quote unquote sexy part. But there's a whole
- 38:12lot more business. The election division is one of the smaller divisions of the
- 38:15Secretary of State's office. The business division, charities and things that nature is
- 38:19actually actually much bigger than than what elections are. And so I know that
- 38:24folks in Secretary of State's Office probably appreciate you saying that where can people learn
- 38:30more about your campaignswer You can go to one line at ken read for west

- 43:27my office and I started seeing all of these comments coming across on Twitter,
- 43:31and like most people, I was like, what the heck is this all
- 43:34about? And then then I saw it. You know, here's the thing.
- 43:42You simply cannot make statements, even in a joking manner like this in
- 43:46the year of twenty twenty three and get by with it. You all know
- 43:52me, I railed against cancel culture on an almost daily basis on here,
- 43:59But that doesn't change us the fact that it is what it is. This
- 44:04is simply who we are as a society in twenty twenty three. You are
- 44:09simply held to a higher standard when you're a Hall of Fame basketball coach and
- 44:15an icon in West Virginia. And maybe not mistake about it. The story
- 44:19is not going away, especially in corporate America, when the funds to the
- 44:25university at least some of them start shutting off. Companies like ESPN and others
- 44:35say either he goes or we don't cover the games. Now, that may
- 44:38be a bit of a stretch, but it could happen, and we have
- 44:45seen it happen before. And you know, I don't know everybody. As
- 44:52soon as I hit the building this morning, man, and everybody's blowing up
- 44:54my phone last night. What do you think it's gonna happen? What do
- 44:57I think it's gonna happen? What do I think should happen? I don't
- 45:00don't know. I have no inside information at West Virginia University in the athletic
- 45:04department or the administration. The administration of course release a statement quickly. And
- 45:08Jeff and I, Jeff Jenkins and I were talking about the show. I
- 45:10applaud Huggins and the university for getting on top of the story. I mean
- 45:15almost immediately. There was a statement from Huggins of an apology. There was
- 45:19a statement for the university of an apology. But it's not going away.
- 45:22It's not going away anytime soon. Tech says it's sad to see people on
- 45:25the right acquescing to the left wing cancel culture because of words. Huggins apologized,
- 45:31stopped being but hurt and grow up. We don't cancel people for mistakes.
- 45:36Well, I'm going to disagree with the Texture on that point because we
- 45:38certainly do. And if you're supporting Huggins to be fired or to resign,
- 45:43maybe the cancel police will come for you next. Better watch out. Huggins
- 45:50as a Texture acknowledge and owned what he said and apologized for it. That
- 45:52should be enough. Unfortunately, in this cancel era, we now live in
- 45:55a world where people are now expected to be held accountable and apologize for things
- 46:00said or done thirty years ago. The truth is an apology will never be
- 46:04enough for the mob. Give them time, and along with wanting him fire,
- 46:07they will demand he'd be removed from the Hall of Fame and basically shunned
- 46:09from society. It's happened every time, according to a text, text says
- 46:17we all make goofs I stand with Hugs. According to a Texter, guys
- 46:24and Catholics or I'm sorry, he says, gazing Catholics called Xavier fans the
- 46:30slur. Yeah he did. Please have people running for secretary of state on
- 46:39air and have debate with candidates. Yeah, I would be more than happy
- 46:43to do that in any time. Anybody wants to do that. I'm one
- 46:45percent. Texas a good show, great job and giving your audience opportunities to
- 46:49listen to candidates. Thank you. Text says, I can't. I don't
- 46:55think I can say this word on the air. But if you know the
- 47:00story and google it, but for God's sakes, don't google on a work
- 47:01computer. Okay, do it on your phone or do it? Just do
- 47:05it when you get home. Okay. About what caused this whole interview in
- 47:08it? And you've got to know Bill Cunningham. You know, I'm a
- 47:10radio geek and I've listened to Bill Cunningham for years. He's an icon in
- 47:14radio. And he's not without blame here too, because he kind of acted
- 47:21on a little bit. I mean he did. And there's an intense rivalry
- 47:23in the city of Cincinnati between the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University. And
- 47:31this all started in a comment about some see how can I say this,
- 47:36Jeff, sexual objects that were thrown on to a court years ago in a
- 47:42basketball That's what started the whole conversation. Tex says was hugs joking. He
- 47:45sounded really angry. Did you hear or read what he said? Yeah?
- 47:49I mean it's posted everywhere yeah, yeah, I mean, I don't know,
- 47:52but he sounded angry about it. I mean, he sounded to me
- 47:54like he was laughing about it a little bit. But when it comes to
- 47:59words, I mean, what you what people say matter, and if especially
- 48:06when it comes to our jobs, if I would say that on the air,
- 48:10I would expect Joe Parsons Dale Cooper to have my office packed up and
- 48:15waiting for me out on the street on eleven eleven Virginia Street. Because it's
- 48:20not about free speech. You don't have free speech when you're on the job.
- 48:25The courts have proven that. I mean, if you, I mean,
- 48:30imagine another scenario. Maybe I'm just really really stretching here, but if
- 48:34I'm working at Wendy's and somebody comes to the drive through and I tell them,
- 48:38you know what, Burger King may say much better Burger, Well,
- 48:43I'm probably going to be fired for that, and I would expect to be
- 48:45If I go on this show and I say several things, I'm probably going
- 48:49to be fired and Bob Huggins is simply held to it. I'm not saying
- 48:52he should be fired. I'm not saying I'm not saying that at all.
- 48:54I'm just saying I understand if he were, but I'm not saying I support
- 48:59that at all, because I mean, this is not about it's not about
- 49:02free speech, it's about poor judgment. On one point, I mean,
- 49:07you're on WLW, which is one of the top ten talk stations. It's
- 49:12fifty one hundred thousand. What's whatever it is, it's a flamethrower of station.
- 49:15People listen to that station all. I have the app on my phone.
- 49:17I listen to it all over the country. It's not like he said
- 49:21it in a private setting somewhere. You know, you said it out and
- 49:24run of everybody. And again, I'm one that's railed against cancel culture one
- 49:29hundred percent, but I also know the effects of it and know what you
- 49:31can and can't say. My guess is he's either going to be fired or
- 49:37there's some sort of a settlement reach where he just retires or leaves, and
- 49:39I could be I have no nothing to base that on other than speculation and
- 49:45having seen things like this go down in the past. I mean, remember
- 49:49Tom Brenneman, played by play Guy for The Reds, Marty's son, my
- 49:52hero, one of my hero's sons, thought the mic was off and he
- 49:57referred to Kansas City as being a blank town, the same word that Bob
- 50:01Huggins used he got fired. He's not been heard from since now. Is
- 50:07Tom brenhaman as big a deal as Bob Huggins know? Probably not, but
- 50:13ain't nobody heard from him in some time? And that was a microphone he
- 50:15thought was off. Huggins knew the microphone was on. He knew he was
- 50:21on live radio on the Bill Cunningham Show. And when you're on the Bill
- 50:24Cunningham Show, you've got to kind of really even more so much what you
- 50:30say. And many people, including those at WVU, are probably going to
- 50:38see this as yet another black eye on a state that can't afford a whole
- 50:42lot of more black eyes. I mean, we're already portrayed as backwards Hillbillies
- 50:46and things like this don't do a heckful like to help. And that's something
- 50:51the university is going to have to look closely at when deciding what to do
- 50:54about the situation. Major companies are looking at how we handle this. Potential
- 50:59recruits are looking at we handle this. And look, I'm past a middle
- 51:01aged guy. The way I look at the world is not the way an
- 51:04eighteen year old student athlete looks at the world not at all. I agree
- 51:08we are way too sensitive and soft as a society, but we're not going
- 51:13to change that. PC is here, Cancel culture is here. It's not
- 51:19going anywhere. Tech said, do these anti cancel culture weirdos just want to
- 51:22say the N word? Or what? This is the vibe that I get
- 51:28day Florida guy here Huggins will retire or be fired by sunset today. Then
- 51:31the basketball portal will fill up from defections from the team. Dave, remember
- 51:40Howard Cosell. Yeah, fired, fired for referring using a racial term on
- 51:47a player. So whatever happens, if anything, we'll follow it, of
- 51:52course, Dave Wilsons. And for Hoppy on talk Line, he'll have that
- 51:55covered up at the top of the arm. I'm sure that's gonna be the
- 51:58bulk of the conversation. I thanks to Ryan, Well to folks from the
- 52:00Dirty Birds Home open for the Dirty Birds to night six thirty five over to
- 52:02the ballpark, go check that out. And thanks to Ken Reid's Secretary of
- 52:07State candidate as well. Coming up on the show, Brad mcahanny will stop
- 52:09by. Plus delegate and state Democratic party chair Mike Pushkin is here. Follow
