- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17OK, first of all, I've had some positive feedback on the sound,
- 0:20so it sounds as though you guys can hear the podcast much better
- 0:24than before. I'm very glad.
- 0:27Second of all, I have such a funny story to tell you guys.
- 0:30OK, so you know how on Spotify it used to say Jordy's going to
- 0:34kill me for saying this story? So you know how on Spotify it
- 0:39says, you know, it used to say Q&A at the bottom of every
- 0:42episode or whatever and you could leave comments?
- 0:44That's where we would be like leave us a Spotify review
- 0:46anyways about, I don't know, maybe like a week or two ago
- 0:50they removed that function. I don't know if it was for
- 0:52everyone or if like the rollouts been kind of like, you know,
- 0:55incremental. But for us, that feature went
- 0:58away for just a few days and then it returned as a comments
- 1:01feature. And then I suppose in the roll
- 1:04out of this new comments feature, there has been some
- 1:07type of, I don't know if it's like a glitch or what happened.
- 1:10But anyways, last night I'm at home and I get like 100
- 1:13notifications on my phone for Spotify for podcasters.
- 1:17And I was like, Oh my God, did we go viral?
- 1:20Like did one of my episodes go viral?
- 1:22So I opened the back end and I'm looking through the comments and
- 1:26I'm not kidding, guys. It was like an inbox filled with
- 1:30all of the comments that Jordy had deleted over the years that
- 1:35were negative about us or super mean.
- 1:37So it was like opening an inbox filled with hate mail about
- 1:40yourself. So there was some type of like
- 1:42glitch or whatever where it brought back like all the
- 1:44comments that had not yet been published, but like, they
- 1:47weren't published 'cause we deleted them, 'cause they were
- 1:49so mean. So I'm just scrolling through it
- 1:52and I'm like, why are people commenting on things from like
- 1:54nine months ago? And then I'm like, Oh my God, I
- 1:56like realized what happened and I was like, Oh my God.
- 1:59And I'm just scrolling and scrolling and it's just like the
- 2:01meanest comments about the podcast and about us.
- 2:04And I was like, this is actually like my worst nightmare.
- 2:07It was very confronting. So I had to text her this
- 2:10morning. I was like, you will never guess
- 2:12what happened. So anyways, those have been
- 2:15deleted. So hopefully no more negativity.
- 2:18But it was just the most insane experience.
- 2:20And I just had to let you guys know that.
- 2:22OK, so for today's mini scroll, I have two stories for you guys.
- 2:28The first story is that Ren Eleanor's content has been wiped
- 2:32off of TikTok after years of complaints.
- 2:35So the TikTok content posted by Ren Eleanor's account has been
- 2:39all removed as pressures mount on platforms to do something
- 2:42about protecting children at family vloggers.
- 2:45So we did a whole episode at the beginning of the year about
- 2:49family vloggers and children on the Internet, and Ren was a big
- 2:52case study in that. So go back and listen to that
- 2:54episode if you guys haven't listened.
- 2:56But if you don't know who I'm talking about, Ren is a four
- 2:58year old girl who was the star of a TikTok account called Ren
- 3:01Eleanor. Ren's mother, Jacqueline,
- 3:03started posting content of Ren when she was just less than a
- 3:05year old. In December 2020, Jacqueline
- 3:09told 3 News Now Omaha that she started the account as a way to
- 3:12allegedly save memories. But after the account grew to
- 3:16over 4 million followers before Ren even turned 2, Jacqueline,
- 3:20who was a single mother, saw the opportunity as a way to make
- 3:23money. By the time it was deactivated
- 3:26recently, Ren had reached over 16,000,000 followers.
- 3:31So what made the account so questionable was, you know, it
- 3:35wasn't like a family account and Jacqueline was not a mommy
- 3:39Blogger. The account was literally made
- 3:42for a four year old girl, as if Ren was the one creating the
- 3:45content and posting it. Which of course does go against
- 3:49the platform's terms of services that state that a user must be
- 3:52thirteen years old or older to make a TikTok account.
- 3:55Obviously, Ren was not the one shooting and uploading content
- 3:58of herself, so this is a loophole that Jacqueline and
- 4:01other parents who have created accounts for their children, as
- 4:04opposed to just like featuring their children on their
- 4:07accounts. This is a loophole that they
- 4:09count on to protect themselves from having these accounts
- 4:12banned. However, over the last couple of
- 4:14years, Jacqueline has faced intense backlash from Internet
- 4:17users as many believed that she was exploiting Ren and
- 4:21intentionally getting Ren to create suggestive content that
- 4:25would appeal to predators, as EJ Dixon wrote for Rolling Stone
- 4:30Quote To be clear, there is no evidence that Jacqueline is
- 4:33exploiting Ren in any way. Rather, the concern seems to be
- 4:36centered more on the type of content Jacqueline is posting,
- 4:39such as a now deleted video of Ren playing with a tampon or Ren
- 4:43taking a bath in a bathing suit, according to post on a subreddit
- 4:46devoted to Ren that has more than 13,000 subscribers,
- 4:49commenters have pointed out. Not only that, such videos get
- 4:52more likes and saves than some of Ren's other videos, but they
- 4:55have even tracked down the social media footprints of some
- 4:58of Ren's followers, pointing to concerning comments that they
- 5:01have made or other videos they have saved to indicate they may
- 5:05be sexually attracted to children.
- 5:07Commenters have also pointed to the existence of fan accounts
- 5:10for Ren and searches such as Ren eating hot dog and Ren's
- 5:14scandalous outfits as evidence that she is being sexualized by
- 5:18a contingent of her followers. And then in July 2022, Business
- 5:22Insider reported finding photos of Ren widely shared by male
- 5:26followers on Pinterest. And then, as this Rolling Stone
- 5:30piece said, there were so many fan accounts created of Ren by
- 5:33random, like strange adults who would be basically reposting her
- 5:37content. This is like the tip of the
- 5:40iceberg. People were very concerned for
- 5:42Ren. And I think in general, when it
- 5:44comes to children online, like the problem is that once that
- 5:47child is online, that parent or that guardian has lost complete
- 5:51control of that child's image. So it doesn't matter if Ren's
- 5:54mom is like limiting comments or blocking creeps, which she is
- 5:58reportedly done in the past, because there's fan accounts
- 6:02that the creeps can then just go access.
- 6:04And this is about any children online, right?
- 6:07Like once you post a kid online, whether you have, I don't know,
- 6:11200 Instagram followers and you're on private or you have
- 6:14200,000 Instagram followers and it's a, an account about your
- 6:17child, whatever it is, once that photo is online, it's gone from
- 6:22you. It is, it's out there, and
- 6:24you've lost control of it. So Ren safety became a huge
- 6:28topic of conversation earlier this year when exposes were
- 6:31written by Cosmo and The New York Times about the dangers and
- 6:34the realities of posting children on the Internet and who
- 6:37is actually consuming that content.
- 6:39Now it seems that either TikTok or Jacqueline have listened
- 6:43because as of recently, Ren's entire backlog of content has
- 6:48been removed. Some think her account was
- 6:51deactivated, while others theorize that perhaps
- 6:53authorities got involved. The account is still up, but
- 6:56there's no content on it. Hopefully, this is a positive
- 6:59step in the direction of protecting Ren and protecting
- 7:03children online. I mean, I saw so many people
- 7:06talk about at the beginning of this year when this was a bigger
- 7:08conversation like around Ren, that Ren's law is going to be
- 7:12something that we see down the track protecting minors on the
- 7:15Internet. Because what is happening to
- 7:18some of these kids where their parents make their accounts like
- 7:21them as opposed to, you know, being a mommy vlogger and
- 7:25posting about your children, which still has like ethical
- 7:27implications, you know, like family channels.
- 7:29We've talked about them a million times before.
- 7:31And they are definitely exploitative of the children as
- 7:34well. But the account being like for
- 7:37Ren, like of Ren, no, something is wrong there.
- 7:40Like something is wrong about that.
- 7:42And this is a good step hopefully in protecting her.
- 7:46Okay. And the second story that I have
- 7:48for you guys today is that lifestyle publication Sheer Lux
- 7:52has introduced AI editor Reem. So this week the UK based
- 7:57lifestyle publisher Sheer Lux launched the Reem Bot, a Quote
- 8:02AI enhanced editor powered by the Sheer Lux team.
- 8:05Quote. Much like our other editors, she
- 8:07has all the best recommendations when it comes to fashion,
- 8:09beauty, interiors, travel, food, and more at the announcement
- 8:12reads. To introduce Reem to readers,
- 8:15Sheer Lux published an interview asking the bot questions from
- 8:20how she would describe her style to some of her favorite
- 8:23boutiques. And just to reiterate, Reem is
- 8:26not a real person like she is a bot.
- 8:28Like this is a robot. This is like a ChatGPT, like a
- 8:31computer. So they also created an
- 8:33Instagram for Reem, which is currently sitting at just under
- 8:361000 followers. Internet users have
- 8:38unsurprisingly, had very strong reactions to this business
- 8:42decision. As with most AI generated
- 8:44journalistic content, users feel uneasy about reading pieces and
- 8:48accepting recommendations from a bot.
- 8:52However, Reem is clearly labeled as an AI enhanced editor, so
- 8:56that might kind of help mitigate some of the concerns there.
- 8:59It will be very clear, I think, when an article is written by
- 9:02Reem versus an actual person. Nevertheless, many users have
- 9:07also taken to TikTok to question Sheer Lux's decision to make the
- 9:11AI editor a woman of color. Based on her appearance and her
- 9:15name, users believe that she is meant to be of Middle Eastern
- 9:18origin, and they have pointed out that Sheer Lux has
- 9:20previously faced criticism for a lack of diversity in their team.
- 9:24So making the decision to create an AI generated woman of color,
- 9:28it feels kind of out of touch and performative and as if it's
- 9:31almost like putting a Band-Aid on that criticism and saying
- 9:34like, see now we actually do have diversity because the chat
- 9:38bot that we created is supposed to be diverse.
- 9:41Quote the fashion industry already has an issue with
- 9:44diversity and instead of hiring the many women of color who are
- 9:47trying to break into fashion journalism, sheer Lux thought
- 9:50the best thing for them to do is to AI generate 1 TikTok user at
- 9:54priscilla's creative corner said in a video.
- 9:57Users have also described Reem as both unrelatable and
- 10:00dystopian, noting that using an AI generated person as an editor
- 10:04signals the decline of journalism as an industry.
- 10:08Which is a bigger topic than I could ever address today.
- 10:12I think there's a few things here.
- 10:13I think the 1st is that like, it is cool that they're trying to
- 10:16lean in to trends and trying to stay relevant.
- 10:20That's one of the biggest challenges with media right now,
- 10:23like journalism, media brands especially kind of the like more
- 10:28traditional older style mastheads like you, just, we
- 10:32just can't evolve as quick as like technology needs us to.
- 10:35And so the industry is facing a lot of challenges because of it.
- 10:39I mean, every other day there's like a new publication closing
- 10:42or new layoffs happening. And I know it's not just in
- 10:44journalism, but that's been greatly affected.
- 10:46You know, we've been greatly affected by the advances in
- 10:49technology and different platforms, like, you know,
- 10:52TikTok and stuff. Like everybody wants citizen
- 10:55journalism as opposed to journalism from a legitimate
- 10:58publisher now. So there's just a lot of
- 11:00changes. And I think it's cool that
- 11:02Shirelax is trying to really like, adapt with that.
- 11:05That's the only way that media will survive is if we can keep
- 11:09up with what's going on and all the changes.
- 11:12And it's very, very challenging. So this is like a cool idea.
- 11:16And there are a lot of publishers that are using
- 11:19ChatGPT or AI chat bots to or like AI in general to create
- 11:25articles. And they do.
- 11:26They are supposed to be properly labeled.
- 11:28I'm sure most of them are not. But you know, this is not like
- 11:31something new, like Reem is not like the first ever bought to
- 11:35write an article that we're reading.
- 11:37I think I'm sure all of you guys have read stuff online where
- 11:39you're like, I don't think a human wrote this.
- 11:42So I think it's cool that they're giving her like a
- 11:44persona and they're trying to take some of that power back, I
- 11:49think from big tech. I think that's cool.
- 11:52But I also agree, if they have faced criticism in the past for
- 11:55a lack of diversity on their editorial team, then this does
- 12:00kind of feel like a Band-Aid to be like, see, if we could, we
- 12:05would. And we did.
- 12:06We did higher diversity, quote UN quote.
- 12:09We just created her as a computer, as a robot.
- 12:13So, yeah, I don't know. I think there's a lot of ethical
- 12:16implications with this. I'm interested to see where it
- 12:19goes. But I think in this case,
- 12:21listening to a lot of the women who are speaking out and saying,
- 12:24like, the fashion industry has such a diversity issue to begin
- 12:28with, this missed the mark for me.
- 12:30I think that's kind of where we need to like direct our
- 12:33attention to in this particular case.
- 12:35Anyways, guys, that's it for Mini Scroll today.
- 12:37Thank you so much for listening. I have one of my favorite deep
- 12:41dives that we've ever done going up tomorrow.
- 12:43It's actually A2 parter, so part one is going up tomorrow.
- 12:46It's a creator deep dive. I wish we got an interview with
- 12:50her, but we unfortunately did not.
- 12:51We did try, but I'm really excited for you guys to hear
- 12:54this one. I can't believe we haven't
- 12:55covered her before. We cover her all the time.
- 12:57That's a hint. We cover her all the time in
- 12:58mini scroll, but we've never covered her on a deep dive.
- 13:02Anyways, guys, thank you so much for listening.
- 13:04Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 13:07That just hits different after I literally opened our reviews to
- 13:10like a million negative ones. Thank you so much.
- 13:13I love you guys and I will. Well, there'll be a deep dive
- 13:16tomorrow, but I'll talk to you guys on Monday.
- 13:17OK, bye.
