- 2:24Speaker 2: Now our good friend from the city of South Charleston,
- 2:26Speaker 2: Sean Zoniga. Good morning, sir. Welcome to the show. Good morning.
- 2:28Speaker 5: Thanks for having me.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. Man, it is a Exciting
- 2:32Speaker 2: time in South Charleston. We'll talk about some things going
- 2:34Speaker 2: on at the Farmer's Market. But first, I want to
- 2:36Speaker 2: talk about the plaza out there. What's new out there?
- 2:39Speaker 6: Yeah, there's a lot of momentum going there right now.
- 2:41Speaker 6: We had Seven Brew open up last week and Sketchers
- 2:44Speaker 6: the week before.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Now, for those who don't know, what is Seven Brew?
- 2:46Speaker 2: I mean, obviously, you hear brew. It's either going to
- 2:49Speaker 2: be beer or coffee. Yeah, it's definitely coffee.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:53Speaker 2: And it's very popular.
- 2:54Speaker 7: It is.
- 2:54Speaker 2: It's very popular. I mean, there was a line, man,
- 2:56Speaker 2: like you wouldn't believe.
- 2:57Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:58Speaker 6: They also sell some other things like some dirty sodas,
- 3:00Speaker 6: energy drinks, and stuff like that as well.
- 3:02Speaker 7: Okay.
- 3:02Speaker 2: All right. What else was in? You said Skechers opened up.
- 3:04Speaker 6: Skechers opened up.
- 3:05Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Response to that has been good, I'm sure.
- 3:07Speaker 9: Yes.
- 3:08Speaker 10: Very well.
- 3:08Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 3:08Speaker 2: So what's coming up on the horizon?
- 3:10Speaker 6: So next, I think what we'll see is in November,
- 3:13Speaker 6: I think we're going to see Mission Barbecue open up.
- 3:17Speaker 6: And then we'll see some mothers who are currently under
- 3:19Speaker 6: construction like Hugh Magoo's. Nothing bunk kegs. And another one
- 3:24Speaker 6: that actually just opened, I believe, last week is pigtails
- 3:27Speaker 6: and crew cuts. So they're officially open. And then great.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Now, what exactly is that?
- 3:32Speaker 6: So it's like a kid's haircut place. And they have, like,
- 3:38Speaker 6: play areas and things like that.
- 3:39Speaker 12: Like Chuck E.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Cheese for the hair cutters.
- 3:41Speaker 10: Yes, basically. Yeah.
- 3:43Speaker 2: And, I mean, again, ever since everybody is– you know,
- 3:47Speaker 2: everybody talks about Kroger out there, obviously, the massive– The Kroger.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I was kidding your mayor long ago that said I
- 3:52Speaker 2: think the city of South Charleston actually opened up inside Kroger.
- 3:54Speaker 2: I think that's why they just moved everything inside there.
- 3:57Speaker 2: But that's what everybody talks about. But with this, there's
- 3:59Speaker 2: so many other things out there besides just Kroger.
- 4:02Speaker 6: Yeah, there's a lot of things, too, that haven't been
- 4:04Speaker 6: announced yet. There'll be some department stores coming and things
- 4:08Speaker 6: like that. But we'll be making those announcements soon.
- 4:11Speaker 2: When can we expect the next announcements to come?
- 4:13Speaker 6: I would say maybe towards the end of the year.
- 4:16Speaker 6: Construction on those things won't start until spring.
- 4:18Speaker 7: All right.
- 4:18Speaker 2: We had a text.
- 4:19Speaker 6: Somebody asked about Menards. Do we know when Menards is open? Yes,
- 4:21Speaker 6: they're still coming. We can anticipate probably construction in spring
- 4:26Speaker 6: or summer.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Okay. That's when the construction will begin.
- 4:28Speaker 5: All right.
- 4:29Speaker 2: And then after that, the way things work now in
- 4:32Speaker 2: any kind of construction that you're doing, whether it's residential
- 4:34Speaker 2: or commercial, it could be a waiting game after that.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I know the Menards down in Barbersville is just absolutely,
- 4:42Speaker 2: I mean, you I've been in there a few times,
- 4:45Speaker 2: and sometimes, man, you can't even move in that store.
- 4:47Speaker 2: There's so many people. And it's a large store. And
- 4:50Speaker 2: if you've never been to a Menards, they have a
- 4:54Speaker 2: little bit of everything, literally. I mean, yeah, you're going
- 4:56Speaker 2: to be able to go look at windows and doors.
- 4:58Speaker 2: You're also going to be able to buy frozen pizzas.
- 5:00Speaker 2: And you're also going to be able to buy home
- 5:02Speaker 2: decor and a bunch of other stuff there.
- 5:04Speaker 9: Okay.
- 5:06Speaker 2: We had a text here that said a petition for Ikea.
- 5:08Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 5:10Speaker 2: The problem with a lot of these places, appreciate the
- 5:12Speaker 2: text is, and I've done this for a long time,
- 5:14Speaker 2: the problem is people say that they want things like
- 5:17Speaker 2: that and, again, appreciate the text or they want a
- 5:20Speaker 2: Trader Joe's. We simply don't have the population base for
- 5:24Speaker 2: a lot of those things, not saying for all of them.
- 5:26Speaker 2: We simply don't have the population base here in the
- 5:28Speaker 2: Kanawha Valley for a lot of those things.
- 5:30Speaker 5: Correct.
- 5:30Speaker 6: And those businesses, they have their own metrics that they
- 5:33Speaker 6: go by.
- 5:33Speaker 2: And they're all different.
- 5:34Speaker 5: And they're all different, correct.
- 5:35Speaker 2: All right. Talking to Sean Zunna again from the city
- 5:38Speaker 2: of South Charleston. I want to talk about the Farmer's Market.
- 5:41Speaker 2: One of those things going on at the Farmer's Market,
- 5:43Speaker 2: you've got a spooktacular night at the market. Friday night
- 5:46Speaker 2: starts at 530. Talk about that.
- 5:48Speaker 6: Yes, it's our second annual. And what you can expect
- 5:50Speaker 6: is our truck retreat. And there's going to be a
- 5:53Speaker 6: touch of truck with Champion Construction. We'll have all their
- 5:55Speaker 6: construction equipment there and things like that. And then we'll
- 5:58Speaker 6: have our popular candy drop as well. And what that is,
- 6:01Speaker 6: is the fire department comes in, they raise the ladder
- 6:03Speaker 6: and And we do candy drops for all age groups,
- 6:06Speaker 6: including adults.
- 6:07Speaker 5: Okay.
- 6:07Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 6:07Speaker 2: And I've got the times here for that. And I
- 6:09Speaker 2: think I got these right. Three and under, they're going
- 6:12Speaker 2: to drop those at six. Four, ages four to seven
- 6:16Speaker 2: at 620. Ages eight to 12 at 640. The teens
- 6:20Speaker 2: will start at 650 and the adults will be after seven.
- 6:23Speaker 2: So I love the fact you're doing something for the
- 6:24Speaker 2: adults too.
- 6:25Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 6:26Speaker 6: Yeah, it was funny. Last year, there's a lot that
- 6:28Speaker 6: lined up to do it. Wow, you know, it was
- 6:30Speaker 6: great to offer it to them, too. And the whole
- 6:33Speaker 6: concept of dropping it, you know, I mean, that's kind
- 6:35Speaker 6: of cool. And plus, you've got the trucks, as you said,
- 6:37Speaker 6: from the– what's the construction company?
- 6:39Speaker 1: Champion Construction.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Champion Construction is going to be there, and, you know,
- 6:42Speaker 2: you get kids. I mean, you know how we were
- 6:44Speaker 2: when we were kids. You give us a big shiny truck,
- 6:47Speaker 2: and we're good to go.
- 6:48Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:49Speaker 2: So that is all going to be happening. This coming
- 6:52Speaker 2: Friday night. Now, if people want to get involved in that,
- 6:56Speaker 2: is there vendor space available? Do you have your normal
- 6:58Speaker 2: vendors open?
- 6:59Speaker 6: Yeah, we still have some space available if they want
- 7:01Speaker 6: to sign up to decorate a trunk. They can just
- 7:05Speaker 6: email me, szuniga at citysidetrawson.com.
- 7:08Speaker 2: And do the spelling of the last name again.
- 7:10Speaker 6: S-Z-U-N-I-G-A at citysidetrawson.com.
- 7:14Speaker 5: All right.
- 7:14Speaker 2: I want to talk about this. You've got an event
- 7:16Speaker 2: called the Taste of Appalachia event. Yes, that's a new
- 7:18Speaker 2: one this year.
- 7:19Speaker 6: And what it is, it's a food showcase, and it's
- 7:22Speaker 6: celebrating the creativity and craftsmanship of Western Union food producers.
- 7:27Speaker 6: So it's a pretty neat event.
- 7:29Speaker 2: And what time is that?
- 7:30Speaker 6: It's from 1 to 4.
- 7:31Speaker 5: 1 to 4.
- 7:31Speaker 9: Okay.
- 7:31Speaker 13: Okay.
- 7:32Speaker 2: It should be a really, really good event out there
- 7:34Speaker 2: at the farmer's market. Now, so what happens this time?
- 7:37Speaker 2: I mean, this time of year, fall, and it's actually,
- 7:39Speaker 2: as I said earlier, it's actually going to feel like
- 7:41Speaker 2: fall by the time Saturday rolls around. What exactly– how
- 7:46Speaker 2: do you guys transition from one season to the next?
- 7:48Speaker 2: Because this is the fall– fall is the farmer's market time,
- 7:51Speaker 2: that and spring, I guess, but fall especially. So what's
- 7:54Speaker 2: the difference now, different hours, different.
- 7:56Speaker 6: Yeah, so what we'll do is we'll finish out fall
- 7:59Speaker 6: through the end of October, and then we'll close down
- 8:02Speaker 6: Monday and Tuesdays and stay open Wednesday through Sunday in November.
- 8:07Speaker 6: And then Christmas trees will come in November 28th, and
- 8:11Speaker 6: then we'll start the Christmas market.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Okay, and I know we'll have you on as we
- 8:15Speaker 2: get closer to talk about that Christmas market, but it's—
- 8:17Speaker 2: It's always very popular. What can people expect from that?
- 8:19Speaker 2: Don't want to rush the season. I know it's still
- 8:21Speaker 2: not even trick-or-treat time yet, but what can people expect
- 8:24Speaker 2: at a Christmas party?
- 8:25Speaker 6: You can definitely expect their Christmas trees back again from
- 8:27Speaker 6: Grits Farm. And then we also have all of our
- 8:30Speaker 6: other local vendors with crafts, the holiday crafts and the
- 8:33Speaker 6: baked goods and all the bakers and makers as well.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Somebody said, let's really go old school. How about a
- 8:39Speaker 2: roller skating rink, classic arcade, and maybe a small movie theater,
- 8:42Speaker 2: 1980s feels. Here's the thing I know about the city
- 8:45Speaker 2: of South Charleston. You and Frank Mullins, you never say
- 8:48Speaker 2: no to anything. You're just kind of like, okay.
- 8:51Speaker 6: We consider it all.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Consider it all. Somebody said, how awesome would a Malibu
- 8:55Speaker 2: Jack's be there? Again, population. Explain, and I've talked to
- 9:01Speaker 2: Mayor Mullins about this and some of the other mayors,
- 9:03Speaker 2: what exactly goes into recruiting some of these stores to
- 9:07Speaker 2: come to them?
- 9:08Speaker 6: Well, I can tell you that Mayor Mullins and our
- 9:11Speaker 6: city manager, Rick Atkinson, has really been really proactive with that,
- 9:16Speaker 6: with The developers, you know, with Rick going to Las
- 9:21Speaker 6: Vegas and New York City.
- 9:23Speaker 2: You got to go to them because they don't come
- 9:25Speaker 2: to you.
- 9:25Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly.
- 9:26Speaker 6: You know, to these business seminars and really talk to
- 9:29Speaker 6: them to let them know, you know, sell it, you know,
- 9:31Speaker 6: sell it to them. But, you know, at the end
- 9:33Speaker 6: of the day, you know, these businesses, they do have
- 9:35Speaker 6: their own metrics and we have to meet that.
- 9:37Speaker 2: And what is part of the selling process of the
- 9:39Speaker 2: city of South Charleston to people?
- 9:42Speaker 6: I think, you know, one of the things that I
- 9:44Speaker 6: think that we are great about and what we take
- 9:47Speaker 6: pride on is our community and everything that we do
- 9:50Speaker 6: in the community, the community supports. And I think that's
- 9:53Speaker 6: a big sell right there. And then, you know, also
- 9:56Speaker 6: our city services and things like that.
- 9:58Speaker 7: But.
- 10:00Speaker 6: They've been pretty proactive with that.
- 10:02Speaker 10: Okay.
- 10:03Speaker 7: All right.
- 10:03Speaker 2: So let's go over again the things at the farmer's market.
- 10:06Speaker 2: You get this spooktacular, starts at 530 on Friday evening,
- 10:10Speaker 2: kind of It's one of the early ones, because I
- 10:12Speaker 2: know there may have been a couple of trunk or
- 10:14Speaker 2: treats already, but this is one of the early ones,
- 10:16Speaker 2: kind of get people in the mood. And the fact that, again,
- 10:18Speaker 2: that you actually drop the candy, this is not, you're
- 10:20Speaker 2: just not going from car to car. They actually drop
- 10:23Speaker 2: it from a fire truck. That's pretty cool stuff right there.
- 10:26Speaker 2: It's almost like a pinata without having to hit anything.
- 10:29Speaker 2: So that's going on. And then you have the other event, again,
- 10:32Speaker 2: the Taste of Appalachia on Sunday. What time was that again?
- 10:35Speaker 5: It was from 1 to 4.
- 10:36Speaker 2: 1 to 4. And best place to find out about
- 10:38Speaker 2: all the activities going on in the city of South Charleston.
- 10:40Speaker 6: It's either our Facebook page or our website, southcharlestonfarmersmarket.com.

- 14:28Speaker 2: about it. Good morning, sir. Welcome to the show.
- 14:30Speaker 5: Hey, I appreciate you having me.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. How many years has this
- 14:33Speaker 2: been going on?
- 14:34Speaker 5: Fall Y'all started in 2017 was the first year of it.
- 14:38Speaker 5: Going back to then now, obviously, The COVID year was
- 14:42Speaker 5: no festival. But other than that, we've been going along
- 14:46Speaker 5: with it since, growing ever since. One of our biggest
- 14:49Speaker 5: years with chili cookers this year, 24 of them.
- 14:52Speaker 2: And here's the thing that's a little bit different about
- 14:54Speaker 2: your chili contest, because I have judged them. I've been
- 14:58Speaker 2: part of several in the area, still continue to do
- 15:00Speaker 2: that from time to time when people have me. But
- 15:02Speaker 2: yours is a little bit different as far as you
- 15:04Speaker 2: don't have a lot of the rules and stuff.
- 15:06Speaker 5: No rules, no regulations. I love it. And we purposefully
- 15:11Speaker 5: like it that way. If it's green chili, white chili,
- 15:15Speaker 5: red chili, beans, no beans, sweet, heat, whatever you prefer.
- 15:20Speaker 5: And that way— I think that's what makes it more community.
- 15:24Speaker 7: Right.
- 15:24Speaker 2: And this is not throwing off on all the other ones.
- 15:27Speaker 16: No, no.
- 15:27Speaker 5: Not at all.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Because those are actual competitions.
- 15:29Speaker 8: Right.
- 15:30Speaker 2: And if you are entering an internationally sanctioned event, you
- 15:34Speaker 2: have certain qualifications, certain things that you have. You can't
- 15:37Speaker 2: use certain ingredients. Everything's got to be done a certain way.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Nothing wrong with that. There's a place for that. But
- 15:42Speaker 2: this is a little bit different. We're more fun. They're
- 15:46Speaker 2: more they're more structure.
- 15:47Speaker 10: Right.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Well, there's big money on the line.
- 15:49Speaker 5: There's much.
- 15:50Speaker 7: Yes.
- 15:51Speaker 5: And, you know, we have our little. But like you said,
- 15:53Speaker 5: we our first place gets five hundred. Second place is
- 15:57Speaker 5: three hundred. Third place, two hundred. And then the people's
- 15:59Speaker 5: choice is one hundred. But you don't get to go
- 16:02Speaker 5: on to the big, big money.
- 16:04Speaker 13: St.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Albans is a main event here.
- 16:05Speaker 7: That's it.
- 16:06Speaker 5: That's it.
- 16:07Speaker 2: So where does the money go that you raise?
- 16:08Speaker 5: Police Department, K-9 unit, youth and education programs within the
- 16:12Speaker 5: city limits of St.
- 16:13Speaker 6: Albans.
- 16:14Speaker 5: Every bit of it stays within the city limits. And
- 16:17Speaker 5: it all started when back in 2017, it all started
- 16:20Speaker 5: as strictly the K-9 unit. That's all that it ever funded.
- 16:23Speaker 5: As we've grown, we've taken in more. We now do
- 16:26Speaker 5: Yak Fest and we do Train Day as an organization, St.
- 16:29Speaker 5: Albans Fairs and Festivals. We've stuck with the K-9 unit,
- 16:34Speaker 5: but we've also expanded out to youth and education. So,
- 16:38Speaker 5: for example, Secret Santa, field trips, community service. I mean,
- 16:43Speaker 5: you know, the kids do community service, help feed them,
- 16:47Speaker 5: things like that. Education programs that just building a better,
- 16:52Speaker 5: safer environment community in St. Albans for future. One of
- 16:56Speaker 5: our big goals we're really working towards, we would really
- 17:00Speaker 5: like to start a scholarship program, both a graduating senior
- 17:04Speaker 5: going to college and a graduating senior who might be
- 17:07Speaker 5: going to trade or technical school. So that's something we're
- 17:11Speaker 5: working at. It's something we're trying to build to get to.
- 17:14Speaker 5: But St. Albans, youth, safety, education.
- 17:18Speaker 2: And this event, I mean, I've been, I don't think
- 17:21Speaker 2: I've been to everyone, but you said it started in 2017.
- 17:24Speaker 2: I mean, I wasn't exaggerating when I say it takes
- 17:27Speaker 2: up all of old Maine and it's, it's, I mean,
- 17:30Speaker 2: there are so many people that turn out for this thing.
- 17:33Speaker 5: Um, we, we see it. One year we had the, the,
- 17:38Speaker 5: the data matrix that we from cell phone pings and
- 17:42Speaker 5: we were at 2,900 people. Um, that was by far
- 17:45Speaker 5: our biggest year. Um, but we, we see well over
- 17:50Speaker 5: 2000 people coming onto main street. Um, and as the
- 17:53Speaker 5: guys who we, we do the organizing, the vendors and
- 17:56Speaker 5: what it's becoming, we're really coming to a point where
- 17:59Speaker 5: we're full and I'm turning vendors away. I hate that
- 18:02Speaker 5: South Charleston fire department. I I'm so sorry, guys, I
- 18:05Speaker 5: can't get them in as a spot and I hate it. Um,
- 18:08Speaker 5: we have several chili cookers who want a chili booth,
- 18:10Speaker 5: but the street is just plumb full. We've thought about
- 18:14Speaker 5: going on to B street. Um, We've even, the consideration
- 18:18Speaker 5: of if it was ever possible to go over onto
- 18:20Speaker 5: the loop. Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking, is
- 18:23Speaker 5: put it on the loop. But we have, I mean,
- 18:25Speaker 5: it's maxed out. And we use a 15-foot space right now.
- 18:29Speaker 5: We thought about maybe going back to a 12-foot space
- 18:32Speaker 5: to cut the size down. You hate to give people
- 18:34Speaker 5: a smaller booth, but we're just pulling full. And like
- 18:37Speaker 5: I said, 24 chili cookers. We got food vendors out there.
- 18:40Speaker 5: We got craft vendors. Really proud of, I say community
- 18:43Speaker 5: a lot. It's my big thing. It's what we do
- 18:46Speaker 5: is try and build community. Really proud of Hayes Middle School.
- 18:49Speaker 5: Has five athletics teams and two just organizational, like the
- 18:56Speaker 5: CTE and the cheerleaders and different, and volleyball, soccer, all
- 19:00Speaker 5: of those. They're all coming out as chili contestants. So
- 19:04Speaker 5: huge representation from the local middle school. Some of the
- 19:07Speaker 5: businesses there coming out. I know Crafts of the Coal
- 19:10Speaker 5: is going to have their ice cream inside, chili on
- 19:14Speaker 5: the outside. So it really brings everybody out. I love
- 19:18Speaker 5: seeing grandmas and grandpas and the little ones out there
- 19:22Speaker 5: all running together. And it's chili.
- 19:24Speaker 2: And it's always such a great event. And again, we're
- 19:27Speaker 2: talking with Dave Rucker. It's always such a great event
- 19:29Speaker 2: in St. Albans because... You know, you are on Old Main,
- 19:32Speaker 2: and everybody's kind of there together, as you said. It's
- 19:35Speaker 2: kind of like fellowshipping, and everybody hangs out. Weather is
- 19:38Speaker 2: going to be great. I love the fact that it's
- 19:40Speaker 2: going to be in the mid-50s, you know, because that's
- 19:42Speaker 2: chilly weather, but it's going to be sunny. you know?
- 19:46Speaker 2: And so, um, and so it's just the entire town
- 19:50Speaker 2: works together with this. Several of the businesses that are
- 19:53Speaker 2: on Old Main will be open. Uh, so chilly's not
- 19:56Speaker 2: your thing. As you said, you're going to have food
- 19:58Speaker 2: trucks there. A few, I mean, there'll be other, some
- 20:00Speaker 2: of the restaurants I'm sure will be open so you
- 20:02Speaker 2: can go in there and grab something.
- 20:03Speaker 13: Certainly.
- 20:04Speaker 5: And, and live music. We have, uh, uh, Three bands
- 20:08Speaker 5: are playing. We have the Daniel Farrell Trio to start
- 20:11Speaker 5: things out, Adam Parker and the Bourbon Cowboys, and then
- 20:14Speaker 5: Fleetwoods Heart. Again, look at them, all local. Most of
- 20:19Speaker 5: them have St. Albans ties, direct St. Albans ties, current
- 20:23Speaker 5: or previous.
- 20:24Speaker 2: And I'm going to guess by the name Fleetwoods Heart
- 20:25Speaker 2: that you're going to be a little Fleetwood Mac and
- 20:27Speaker 2: a little heart thrown in there.
- 20:28Speaker 5: That's right. And that's exactly, you nailed it. And again,
- 20:33Speaker 5: some St. Albans hometown folks in that organization there coming
- 20:36Speaker 5: to– take the stage. Um, and again, I'll recognize Hayes
- 20:41Speaker 5: middle school community. We start out at noon, um, recognizing
- 20:45Speaker 5: the kids who achieved mastery on the standardized test last year.
- 20:49Speaker 5: So we call it mastery on main street. Um, the,
- 20:52Speaker 5: everybody from elementary school all the way up to the
- 20:55Speaker 5: high school, not just Hayes, um, all of them, we
- 20:58Speaker 5: call them across the elementary elementary schools in alphabetical order.
- 21:02Speaker 5: They all get to come up the little ones, you know,
- 21:04Speaker 5: excited as they are. Um, get their picture taken on
- 21:07Speaker 5: stage on all the signs, make them feel.
- 21:10Speaker 2: The star of the show. I was there for that
- 21:13Speaker 2: last year. And I think, uh, Steve Hannibal, uh, from
- 21:15Speaker 2: our sister station, 98, seven amounts of wild and wonderful
- 21:17Speaker 2: classic rock was there. And I love the fact that
- 21:19Speaker 2: we put Steve on stage with these kids. So that,
- 21:22Speaker 2: that way we can say kids, if you don't do
- 21:24Speaker 2: your homework. If you don't study hard, you're going to
- 21:27Speaker 2: be just like Steve Animal.
- 21:28Speaker 7: Right.
- 21:29Speaker 2: So that's like– and the kids are like.
- 21:31Speaker 5: The carrot or the stick.
- 21:32Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Oh, crap. I got to get this gear. I want
- 21:35Speaker 2: to end up being a loudmouth rock and roll.
- 21:37Speaker 5: That's right. And I love that they get to come
- 21:39Speaker 5: out there and be that star.
- 21:40Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 21:40Speaker 5: It's good stuff. And they love it. As a teacher,
- 21:43Speaker 5: as the teacher in me, I see the kids– the
- 21:46Speaker 5: following week and they're like they're all excited.
- 21:48Speaker 2: About it so good stuff.
- 21:49Speaker 5: It's enjoyable to to be able to bring it and
- 21:51Speaker 5: then as the kid in me i say that you
- 21:54Speaker 5: know i go out and like i said i see
- 21:56Speaker 5: guys or girls that i've graduated high school with from
- 21:59Speaker 5: way back in 02 that i haven't seen way back
- 22:01Speaker 5: in 02 he said it's way back to me okay
- 22:04Speaker 5: um but uh you know we haven't seen him in
- 22:07Speaker 5: a while so you get to see him and then
- 22:09Speaker 5: like i said even their parents and and folks who
- 22:12Speaker 5: Maybe you only see them once a year at Yak
- 22:15Speaker 5: Fest or at Fall Y'all Chili Cook-Off. So it's enjoyable.
- 22:19Speaker 5: It's a great time. And then raffles. We have several
- 22:22Speaker 5: raffles going on. Thank you to Mardi Gras Casino for
- 22:25Speaker 5: a night stay, casino bucks, and restaurant money. Thank you
- 22:30Speaker 5: to John's Cyclery, getting into that health and physical activity,
- 22:34Speaker 5: donating $ 800 towards any merchandise there at John's Cyclery in St.
- 22:39Speaker 5: Albans and Scary Creek Tactical. always assisting with our raffles
- 22:43Speaker 5: over on 817 with your home and defense needs that
- 22:46Speaker 5: you got there. So all those raffles going on will
- 22:50Speaker 5: also be given away. We have partners that have, you know,
- 22:54Speaker 5: given things in the past. We have one of the
- 22:56Speaker 5: gas heaters, you know, fall time. Nice heater to warm
- 23:00Speaker 5: yourself up at as you're out there making your own
- 23:03Speaker 5: chili recipe for next year.
- 23:05Speaker 2: So let me ask you personally, okay, are you a
- 23:07Speaker 2: chili guy?
- 23:08Speaker 5: I love it.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Okay, so what constitutes a good chili? And you're not
- 23:12Speaker 2: going to be judging, by the way.
- 23:13Speaker 5: I do not judge. I'm the luckiest man there. I
- 23:15Speaker 5: get to taste them all, and I don't have to
- 23:17Speaker 5: judge any of them.
- 23:18Speaker 2: There you go. What to you makes a good chili?
- 23:20Speaker 2: And there's no right or wrong answer, just for you.
- 23:22Speaker 5: I like the sweet to start and the heat to
- 23:27Speaker 5: follow up. I like the beans. I like a meaty chili.
- 23:32Speaker 5: I don't want runny. I like it, you know, I
- 23:37Speaker 5: want to be filled up. Mm-hmm. But I do want
- 23:39Speaker 5: to sweat a little bit.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Okay.
- 23:41Speaker 5: I like that sweet flavor.
- 23:43Speaker 2: That's pretty much my wife makes a chipotle chili.
- 23:46Speaker 8: Okay.
- 23:46Speaker 2: And she just did that over the weekend on Sunday.
- 23:48Speaker 2: And it's really good.
- 23:50Speaker 5: That's my dad always. God rest his soul. He always
- 23:52Speaker 5: made a good chili. And I tell you, I think
- 23:55Speaker 5: the trick to it, and that's why I think the
- 23:57Speaker 5: chili recipes at the chili cook-offs a lot of time
- 24:01Speaker 5: can be good, is he always made it the day before.
- 24:03Speaker 5: It stewed for a long time. And that's where I
- 24:06Speaker 5: think that sweet and heat come in, you know.
- 24:09Speaker 2: And you have a lot of different chilies to try.
- 24:11Speaker 2: But let me say one.
- 24:14Speaker 5: I do have to admit, last year, and I can't
- 24:17Speaker 5: remember who it was, there was a white chicken chili
- 24:20Speaker 5: that was phenomenal. And I'm not usually that guy, but
- 24:25Speaker 5: it was like, hmm, now this is some good meal
- 24:27Speaker 5: right here.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Look, I'm by chili like I am by pizza or
- 24:31Speaker 2: hot dogs. There's things I like better than others, but
- 24:33Speaker 2: there's really no good or bad. You give me the
- 24:35Speaker 2: green chili, give me the white chili. I like it all.
- 24:37Speaker 5: I'm with you. I like it all.
- 24:38Speaker 2: But I definitely want the heat with mine. But I
- 24:40Speaker 2: will say, I think one of the biggest misconceptions, and
- 24:43Speaker 2: it's all in the taste buds.
- 24:44Speaker 5: I get that.
- 24:45Speaker 2: People think that it has to be the hotter, the better.
- 24:48Speaker 2: And I think it's all about the flavor. If it
- 24:50Speaker 2: has a little bit of heat, but the heat is
- 24:53Speaker 2: not overpowering, like Carolina Reaper overpowering, then the flavor is
- 24:58Speaker 2: what really matters. Now, I prefer mine with some heat.
- 25:01Speaker 2: I might add a little hot sauce to mine because
- 25:02Speaker 2: I'm that guy.
- 25:03Speaker 5: And that's all right.
- 25:04Speaker 2: But also add a little sour cream to it too.
- 25:06Speaker 5: And I'm the cheese guy.
- 25:07Speaker 2: I like sour cream cheese and I don't do crackers.
- 25:09Speaker 2: I like tortilla chips.
- 25:10Speaker 5: We like to eat, don't we?
- 25:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm a fan. Dave, I started to eat when
- 25:14Speaker 2: I was real young.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Me too.
- 25:15Speaker 2: And I just never got out of the habit.
- 25:17Speaker 7: No.
- 25:17Speaker 5: You know that I feel fit when they didn't let
- 25:19Speaker 5: me do it.
- 25:19Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 25:20Speaker 5: All right.
- 25:20Speaker 2: So you talked about the vendors. Are you pretty much
- 25:24Speaker 2: out of space at this point with the vendors?
- 25:25Speaker 5: Certainly out of space. Unfortunately, I have several vendors that
- 25:30Speaker 5: are on wait lists that are, I'm really, I mentioned
- 25:34Speaker 5: South Charleston fire department. I hate that. I can't get
- 25:36Speaker 5: those guys in there. One of our most fun booths
- 25:38Speaker 5: that we have, but we just, they got a late
- 25:41Speaker 5: application in and we just, I can't fit them in. So, um,
- 25:45Speaker 5: if anything, if we have any cancellations between now, it
- 25:48Speaker 5: does happen. It does. Um, it, it does. Somebody comes
- 25:52Speaker 5: up and says, Hey, sickness can't do or whatever. If
- 25:55Speaker 5: I have any cancellations, I do have the wait list,
- 25:57Speaker 5: and I will reach out to them in the order
- 26:00Speaker 5: of which they applied. And that would be last minute,
- 26:03Speaker 5: but we try and make sure we have a full street.
- 26:06Speaker 5: I'll call you Saturday morning and say, hey, I got
- 26:08Speaker 5: one vacant. You want to come on?
- 26:11Speaker 2: And one of the great things about this, and I'm
- 26:12Speaker 2: going to talk about the ticketing here momentarily, but one
- 26:14Speaker 2: of the great things about it is if you just
- 26:16Speaker 2: want to come out and see the kids, take part
- 26:20Speaker 2: in the games, the giveaways, you know, enjoy the music,
- 26:24Speaker 2: there's not a charge.
- 26:24Speaker 5: Not a bit. Come enjoy the environment.
- 26:27Speaker 2: You can just come and hang out. Breathe the air.
- 26:29Speaker 2: What about breathing the air after everybody's had chili? But anyway,
- 26:32Speaker 2: it's another point.
- 26:32Speaker 5: Good point.
- 26:33Speaker 2: How does the ticketing work?
- 26:35Speaker 5: So, again, you don't have to buy anything. If you
- 26:38Speaker 5: want to just come walk it, come walk it. It's
- 26:40Speaker 5: going to be quite tempting with all that chili in
- 26:43Speaker 5: the air. But $ 1 a ticket if you want to
- 26:46Speaker 5: go that route. Now, you don't get any voting that way.
- 26:49Speaker 5: When you do that, we have a $ 10 route and
- 26:50Speaker 5: a $ 20 route. $ 10 will get you 12 tickets. That's
- 26:52Speaker 5: going to Half the vendors, half the chili vendors.
- 26:58Speaker 2: So you've got to choose wisely.
- 26:59Speaker 5: You do. And you'll get two voting chips with the $ 10.
- 27:04Speaker 5: So you are a people's choice voter. There's a bucket.
- 27:07Speaker 5: So you become one of the community judges at that point.
- 27:11Speaker 5: And then the $ 20, you get a little extra. You
- 27:14Speaker 5: get 25 tickets for the $ 20. So with that, you
- 27:19Speaker 5: can taste all of the vendors at the $ 20, all
- 27:22Speaker 5: the chili cookers at the $ 20 rate. plus one, plus
- 27:26Speaker 5: one extra, who your favorite, go back and throw them
- 27:28Speaker 5: your chips. And with the $ 20, you get four voting chips.
- 27:33Speaker 2: You remember off the top of your head who won
- 27:34Speaker 2: last year, who some of the winners were?
- 27:36Speaker 5: The St. Albans Police Department was the winner of the
- 27:42Speaker 5: People's Choice. Right. I cannot remember off the top of
- 27:46Speaker 5: my head. First choice collision out of Nitro, I think,
- 27:50Speaker 5: was the.
- 27:51Speaker 2: First class collision. First class collision.
- 27:53Speaker 5: I'm sorry.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Good advertiser of ours over on 98th Street of the Mountain.
- 27:56Speaker 5: Out of Nitro was the judging winner, I believe. I'll
- 28:03Speaker 5: tell you a funny story. We got accused one time.
- 28:05Speaker 5: We've changed our voting system. I see you get chips now.
- 28:08Speaker 5: We used to use dog bones because we've always been
- 28:10Speaker 5: about the K-9 dog. Arco, now Bonnie. But they accused it.
- 28:17Speaker 5: They accused us of a cheating and going and buying
- 28:19Speaker 5: the dog bones. The police department was cheating and going
- 28:23Speaker 5: and buying dog bones. We went and printed up our
- 28:25Speaker 5: own fall y'all poker chips and our own logo. Now
- 28:28Speaker 5: we collect them back at the end. Okay, all right.
- 28:31Speaker 5: Zero questions asked. Zero questions asked. It's a very fair system,
- 28:35Speaker 5: and the judges do a blind. You've seen the judges
- 28:38Speaker 5: do a blind judging. They have no idea whose chili
- 28:41Speaker 5: they're tasting.
- 28:42Speaker 2: The way that it worked last year, and I'm going
- 28:44Speaker 2: to be there. I'm not judging this year, but I'm
- 28:45Speaker 2: going to be there just to kind of help you
- 28:46Speaker 2: out a little bit. Um, they go inside, at least
- 28:49Speaker 2: they did last year. They actually went the same way.
- 28:51Speaker 2: They went inside the Auburn theater, uh, the Auburn art center.
- 28:53Speaker 7: Yep.
- 28:54Speaker 2: They're an old main close to the public.
- 28:56Speaker 5: Yep.
- 28:56Speaker 2: And all you get is a number. You don't get
- 28:58Speaker 2: a name or whatever, uh, and a sheet. And you
- 29:01Speaker 2: have a number. This is number one. And you can
- 29:03Speaker 2: make comments and say, this one needed a little salt.
- 29:06Speaker 2: This one, too much salt, this one, whatever. And the
- 29:08Speaker 2: judge is, They will talk to each other sometimes, but
- 29:12Speaker 2: it doesn't, if you like one and I like one,
- 29:15Speaker 2: we don't necessarily try to persuade, try to persuade in
- 29:18Speaker 2: any way, you know? So we just want to make
- 29:20Speaker 2: sure everybody realizes that.
- 29:21Speaker 5: And it's a great time to, I love it. I'm, I'm,
- 29:24Speaker 5: myself and adam oversee the judging and and we just
- 29:27Speaker 5: sit and watch y'all carry on and taste it's a
- 29:30Speaker 5: great time.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Well last year we had quite the lineup because we
- 29:33Speaker 2: had i think the principal of St. Albans High School
- 29:35Speaker 2: was there.
- 29:36Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 29:36Speaker 2: We had Jay Silverman from Have Fun.
- 29:40Speaker 5: Jay is our annual foodie judge.
- 29:43Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 29:43Speaker 5: Jay's with us every year.
- 29:44Speaker 6: Right, right.
- 29:45Speaker 2: I think Shockley from 98.7 The Mountain was there. Marilee McCullough.
- 29:48Speaker 5: It was Brian Hughes is who it was.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Oh, that's right. Yeah, he wasn't part of our team then.
- 29:51Speaker 13: He was, okay.
- 29:52Speaker 2: That's right, it was Brian Hughes. That's who it was.
- 29:55Speaker 2: And also Marilee McCullough from WWK was there last year.
- 29:58Speaker 2: So- It's always a good time. We had a couple
- 30:02Speaker 2: questions here. What about possibly moving it to the football field?
- 30:08Speaker 2: I'll say this while you're thinking. That's not a bad
- 30:13Speaker 2: idea at all. However, you are in the middle of
- 30:14Speaker 2: football season, and football coaches and administrations don't particularly like.
- 30:18Speaker 5: That's going to be very true.
- 30:20Speaker 2: When you're messing with their facilities, their profit field.
- 30:22Speaker 5: That's going to be very true.
- 30:23Speaker 2: And also, you've got to go through a whole lot
- 30:25Speaker 2: of other stuff when you have it.
- 30:27Speaker 5: Kanawha County Schools.
- 30:28Speaker 2: And they're wonderful to deal with.
- 30:30Speaker 17: Yes, yes.
- 30:31Speaker 5: It's just– I had a vendor who was– they were
- 30:35Speaker 5: amazed at how much went into the chili cook-off. And
- 30:38Speaker 5: I said, we have to deal with– government agencies and
- 30:42Speaker 5: insurances and so it would just be another layer that
- 30:46Speaker 5: nothing wrong with that you know they're great to work with.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Possibly exploring it at some point yeah but again I
- 30:51Speaker 2: think the idea too is to try to get people
- 30:53Speaker 2: to Old Main it is try to get people to
- 30:56Speaker 2: come down there and go in the businesses and see
- 30:57Speaker 2: what St. Albans has to offer there and and all
- 30:59Speaker 2: of St.
- 30:59Speaker 5: Albans but That central location.
- 31:06Speaker 2: But another text says, do you all need any type
- 31:08Speaker 2: of donations for the actual canine dogs, like blankets or
- 31:10Speaker 2: food or anything like that?
- 31:13Speaker 5: We would always love to have those. If anybody could reach,
- 31:16Speaker 5: they want to reach out to us on Facebook at St.
- 31:19Speaker 5: Albans Fairs and Festivals or at Fall Y'all Festival Chili
- 31:23Speaker 5: Cook-Off at Facebook. Um, we would love to do that.
- 31:27Speaker 5: I do have to give some credit and recognition. We
- 31:29Speaker 5: have awesome sponsors. So like for the food tractor supply
- 31:33Speaker 5: actually is a, is an in-kind annual and has been
- 31:36Speaker 5: for a long time. They supply all of Bonnie's food. Um,
- 31:39Speaker 5: so they're great to work with. Um, but there are
- 31:44Speaker 5: things of course. You know, we always have these dogs
- 31:48Speaker 5: are dogs that now they're professional dogs, but they still
- 31:52Speaker 5: have a home life as well. So they get Kong
- 31:55Speaker 5: balls and they a lot of those times the Kong balls,
- 31:58Speaker 5: their training tools. So, yes, we certainly the dogs could
- 32:03Speaker 5: always use those donations. If you could reach out to
- 32:06Speaker 5: us or the St. Albans Police Department canine unit, of course,
- 32:10Speaker 5: or the St. Albans Police Department, you can reach out
- 32:12Speaker 5: to them. Or like I said, St. Albans Fairs and
- 32:15Speaker 5: Festivals is our organizational entity that does Yak Fest, Train Day,
- 32:19Speaker 5: and Fall Y'all and the Dog Bowl fundraiser. But you
- 32:22Speaker 5: can reach out to us on the Fall Y'all Chili
- 32:26Speaker 5: Cook-Off Facebook as well.
- 32:28Speaker 7: All right.
- 32:28Speaker 2: Again, it all starts at noon on Old Main and St.
- 32:30Speaker 8: Albans.
- 32:31Speaker 2: It's going to feel like fall. Brian says temperatures are
- 32:33Speaker 2: going to be in the mid-50s.
- 32:33Speaker 5: It's going to be awesome.
- 32:34Speaker 2: But it's going to be sunny. So come on out
- 32:37Speaker 2: there and enjoy some chili, enjoy some music, win some prizes.
- 32:40Speaker 2: and just have a great time, as my dad used
- 32:42Speaker 2: to say in the church, fellowshiping one with the other.
- 32:44Speaker 2: Come on out there and join us. It's going to
- 32:45Speaker 2: be great. Sunday at noon, we'll be there. Several of
- 32:48Speaker 2: the folks from the stations will be there, so we're
- 32:50Speaker 2: looking forward to seeing you there, Mr.
- 32:51Speaker 7: Rucker.
- 32:51Speaker 2: It's always a pleasure to have you on the show, man.
- 32:53Speaker 5: Appreciate it. Thank you. I always enjoy being here. All right.

- 36:34Speaker 2: can read that now if you missed it this morning
- 36:36Speaker 2: at wvmetronews.com. And if you think things are confusing now...
- 36:41Speaker 2: in the world of politics. Weekly will take you back
- 36:44Speaker 2: to a time that says, hold my beer, when you
- 36:46Speaker 2: had three or four different people claiming to be governor
- 36:50Speaker 2: of the state of West Virginia. Weekly's done his research
- 36:52Speaker 2: on this. You can read the commentary, wvmetronews.com, or you
- 36:55Speaker 2: can listen to the hotline host coming up at, we'll
- 36:59Speaker 2: have it on about 1220 or so today. The director
- 37:02Speaker 2: of nursing at WVU Medicine, Godlessano Children's, is going to
- 37:04Speaker 2: join us on the show. That is Metro News Midday
- 37:07Speaker 2: with Amanda and me, powered by Salango Law. Now on
- 37:09Speaker 2: this show tomorrow, Our friend Javon Schmidt from Goodwill of
- 37:13Speaker 2: the Summit will join us. He was just on the
- 37:15Speaker 2: show last week, but they got some big doings going on.
- 37:18Speaker 2: There is a new Goodwill store opening up in Eleanor
- 37:21Speaker 2: in Putnam County. And I think they opened that up
- 37:24Speaker 2: on Thursday. A few of our radio stations are going
- 37:26Speaker 2: to be broadcasting live around that time the days after
- 37:29Speaker 2: from over there. So Javon Schmidt will join us to
- 37:31Speaker 2: talk about this new Goodwill store in Eleanor, which opens
- 37:33Speaker 2: up on Thursday. He'll join us on the show tomorrow
- 37:36Speaker 2: to talk about it. The Dave Allen Show on 580
- 37:38Speaker 2: Live brought to you in part by Morgan & Morgan.
- 37:40Speaker 2: If you're injured, hire Morgan & Morgan, America's largest injury
- 37:43Speaker 2: law firm. Let me knock out some text here. Text says,
- 37:45Speaker 2: this is from yesterday's show, Dave. Danny is killing me.
- 37:50Speaker 2: He kills me all the time. The Democratic Party, this
- 37:53Speaker 2: is the continuation of that text. The Democratic Party left
- 37:56Speaker 2: me a long time ago, but I can't bring myself
- 37:59Speaker 2: to change. Dad always said, as an independent, it's just
- 38:02Speaker 2: a Republican who is ashamed to admit it. I mean,
- 38:06Speaker 2: it is true if you look at the data and
- 38:09Speaker 2: the polling. that those that are independent or no party
- 38:13Speaker 2: do tend to vote, and this is done by polling,
- 38:17Speaker 2: nobody's actually looking at their actual vote, they do tend
- 38:20Speaker 2: to lean more conservative. And for one reason or another,
- 38:24Speaker 2: they decided to leave the party. That's not to say
- 38:27Speaker 2: that there aren't former Democrats that opted for no party.
- 38:32Speaker 2: Maybe they did. Maybe, you know, for the same reason
- 38:35Speaker 2: that a lot of Republicans leave the party, they're unhappy
- 38:37Speaker 2: with the party's status on something. They're unhappy with the
- 38:42Speaker 2: head of the party, meaning the president of the United States,
- 38:45Speaker 2: Donald Trump, currently sitting with a 32% approval rating. So
- 38:49Speaker 2: that may have a little something to do with it. Look,
- 38:51Speaker 2: I have been a Democrat. I have been a Republican.
- 38:56Speaker 2: And now I'm an independent. And I started out, you
- 38:59Speaker 2: know my story, I've told you before, I started out
- 39:01Speaker 2: as a Democrat because being in Logan County, I graduated
- 39:06Speaker 2: high school in 1988, my first election that I voted
- 39:11Speaker 2: was in 1988, and there were no Republicans locally to
- 39:17Speaker 2: vote for. I mean, none.
- 39:19Speaker 1: No, none.
- 39:20Speaker 2: Zero.
- 39:21Speaker 7: Zilch.
- 39:21Speaker 2: So if you wanted to have somebody to vote for
- 39:23Speaker 2: in the primary, you had to be a Democrat. And
- 39:26Speaker 2: that just recently changed. It was just announced, I guess,
- 39:28Speaker 2: last week that and we talked about it on both shows,
- 39:31Speaker 2: that Logan County is now fully Republican. Every elected office
- 39:36Speaker 2: in Logan County is now held by a Republican, everyone.
- 39:39Speaker 2: And I'm going to say most of those, 95% or higher,
- 39:45Speaker 2: used to be Democrats, same people. They just changed party.
- 39:48Speaker 2: I became a Republican in And then I left the
- 39:51Speaker 2: Republican Party. And with all due respect, it was a
- 39:54Speaker 2: very amicable split. As Dave Mason said in the song,
- 39:59Speaker 2: there ain't no good guy, there ain't no bad guy.
- 40:01Speaker 2: It's only you and me, and we just disagree. My
- 40:06Speaker 2: story was, is I left the Republican Party because I
- 40:10Speaker 2: could not stand any longer and stand by and look
- 40:14Speaker 2: at the blind worship of Donald Trump, somebody who I
- 40:16Speaker 2: voted for twice. That's why I left the Republican Party.
- 40:20Speaker 2: My ideals, my morals are 95 percent, 90 to 95
- 40:27Speaker 2: percent Republican, especially as it goes to the economy and business.
- 40:32Speaker 2: A little bit more libertarian in certain areas because I've
- 40:38Speaker 2: kind of got the attitude that I really don't care
- 40:40Speaker 2: what you do in the privacy of your own home.
- 40:41Speaker 2: It's none of my business. But, you know, there I was.
- 40:46Speaker 2: I was having a conversation with somebody earlier, and I
- 40:49Speaker 2: think I've told you this story before. There is a
- 40:52Speaker 2: good friend of mine who is running for the legislature,
- 40:55Speaker 2: not in this area. This is not an endorsement or anything,
- 40:57Speaker 2: but a longtime friend of mine who is running for
- 41:00Speaker 2: House of Delegates in another part of the state, not
- 41:02Speaker 2: in our listing area. And he's running as a Democrat,
- 41:05Speaker 2: trying to unseat a Republican. And I had this conversation
- 41:07Speaker 2: with him, and I said, look, They're going to come
- 41:10Speaker 2: at you, and even though you are a conservative, pro-gun,
- 41:15Speaker 2: pro-life Democrat, they are going to tie you to Omar.
- 41:20Speaker 2: They're going to tie you to Chuck Schumer, to Kamala Harris.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Get used to it. And by gosh, he was right,
- 41:28Speaker 2: because they have, even though he was nowhere near close
- 41:32Speaker 2: to that. Anyway, so appreciate the text. Alyssa Middleton. One
- 41:37Speaker 2: of the two people in the ambulance the night John
- 41:39Speaker 2: Lucas was killed due back in court. There's a status
- 41:41Speaker 2: hearing today in front of Judge Hardy that's set to
- 41:45Speaker 2: begin at 1.30 this afternoon. Of course, we'll be in
- 41:46Speaker 2: the courtroom. Middleton charged with voluntary manslaughter, aggregated vehicular homicide,
- 41:53Speaker 2: and leaving the scene of an accident involving death. The defense,
- 41:57Speaker 2: and we told you this last week, the defense is
- 42:01Speaker 2: asking for an expert in toxicology. to be allowed to
- 42:05Speaker 2: have some input into the case. Of course, it was
- 42:07Speaker 2: released last week. And again, it is a matter of
- 42:09Speaker 2: public record. It was released last week that John Lucas,
- 42:14Speaker 2: the man who tragically died in this incident, had amphetamines
- 42:17Speaker 2: and meth in his system. And so they're trying, I mean,
- 42:22Speaker 2: that's a matter of public record. That came out from
- 42:23Speaker 2: the toxicology department. So they're I guess, checking to see
- 42:28Speaker 2: if this is going to be part of the court
- 42:29Speaker 2: case or not. But it's out there. I mean, it's
- 42:31Speaker 2: been released. So Judge Hardy will hear it all today.
- 42:34Speaker 2: And again, we'll have coverage on the air and online.
- 42:36Speaker 2: That status hearing is set to begin at 1.30 today.
- 42:38Speaker 2: I invite you to join me every Friday morning, 9.06,

- 46:14Speaker 2: East Charleston. Looking forward to it. Trick or Beat, again,
- 46:17Speaker 2: presented by Selangor Law at GoMart Ballpark on Thursday, October
- 46:20Speaker 2: the 29th. We had a text here that said, being
- 46:26Speaker 2: a concerned listener, what's your favorite brand of hot sauce?
- 46:29Speaker 2: I like the Local Hive Honey Habanero. I don't really
- 46:32Speaker 2: have a favorite brand per se. My wife and I
- 46:37Speaker 2: picked up some habanero from Trader Joe's when we were
- 46:40Speaker 2: in Columbus not long ago. It'll put a hurting on you,
- 46:44Speaker 2: as my dad would say.
- 46:45Speaker 5: All right.
- 46:46Speaker 2: It's good, though. It's got a good flavor. The one,
- 46:49Speaker 2: and I hand to, and I'm going to totally butcher
- 46:53Speaker 2: this in the pronunciation. I just tell people it's the
- 46:57Speaker 2: one that you see at every Mexican restaurant, El Yucateco, maybe.
- 47:03Speaker 2: it is described, I did a little research on the
- 47:05Speaker 2: break here, a pungent habanero-based line such as green or
- 47:08Speaker 2: red variants impacts a much higher heat level than traditional
- 47:11Speaker 2: vinegar-heavy sauces. So that one, that's one of my go-tos,
- 47:15Speaker 2: but I like Frank's, I like Tabasco, I like Texas,
- 47:18Speaker 2: I like them all. I like them all. How's that
- 47:20Speaker 2: for a good politically correct answer? Text, not only did
- 47:27Speaker 2: Trump start a forever war in Iran, but pretty sure
- 47:29Speaker 2: he kicked off World War III in It's a slow
- 47:32Speaker 2: burn now and not looking like it'll cool down anytime soon.
- 47:35Speaker 2: Big thank you to MAGA voters. Had you all developed
- 47:38Speaker 2: the capability of critical thought, we wouldn't be in this situation.
- 47:43Speaker 2: The Kanawha County Commission is going to be busy today
- 47:45Speaker 2: with two events. One of those, the groundbreaking for the
- 47:47Speaker 2: Leatherwood Water Project. That's going on as we speak, 275
- 47:50Speaker 2: Elk River Road, south in Clendenin. That's the old Herbert
- 47:54Speaker 2: Hoover High School site. Now, the other event at 1115
- 47:56Speaker 2: this morning at the Shawnee Sports Complex is This is
- 48:00Speaker 2: a press conference to celebrate the new Mobile Command Center
- 48:04Speaker 2: in Kanawha County Fire Truck. Open to the public. Shawnee
- 48:06Speaker 2: Sports Complex starts at 11.15 this morning. And back to
- 48:09Speaker 2: the Leatherwood Project. I have been doing this show for
- 48:15Speaker 2: almost six and a half years now, and it seems
- 48:17Speaker 2: like we've been talking about this particular project ever since
- 48:19Speaker 2: I took over the show. So I'm glad to see, finally,
- 48:22Speaker 2: to see some Dirt flying. The Dave Allen Show on
- 48:25Speaker 2: 580 Live brought to you in part by the Charleston
- 48:27Speaker 2: Dirty Birds, West Virginia's biggest winter night festival, the Salango
- 48:30Speaker 2: Law Light the Night, presented by GoMart. Coming to GoMart
- 48:32Speaker 2: Ballpark starts November the 13th. Over two and a half
- 48:35Speaker 2: million lights, carnival rides, visits with Santa, great food, ice skating,
- 48:39Speaker 2: bumper cars, and more. Hours are Sunday through Thursdays, 5
- 48:42Speaker 2: to 9, 5 till 10 on Saturdays. Closed on Christmas Day.
- 48:45Speaker 2: Get your tickets in advance. Please do so at dirtybirdsbaseball.com. Text,
- 48:50Speaker 2: it's kind of gross. The defense lawyers are going to
- 48:52Speaker 2: use meth in the guy's system to try and get
- 48:54Speaker 2: a lighter sentence for the person who ran him over
- 48:56Speaker 2: and dragged him under the ambulance for a couple of miles,
- 48:59Speaker 2: says the texter. Text, I agree with you when it
- 49:02Speaker 2: comes to blind worship of Donald Trump. Some have, but
- 49:05Speaker 2: there's also blind hatred of him, and that's never called out.
- 49:08Speaker 2: And if you do, you're accused of being in a cult.
- 49:10Speaker 6: Sorry.
- 49:11Speaker 2: The practices of cults include completely silencing, threatening, and assaulting
- 49:14Speaker 2: people who question what you're doing. It also includes separating
- 49:17Speaker 2: you from family and friends if they try to talk
- 49:19Speaker 2: to you. What side does all that? Hint, it ain't Trump's. Look,
- 49:23Speaker 2: I have said this before about Donald Trump.
- 49:27Speaker 7: All right.
- 49:30Speaker 2: The term Trump derangement syndrome is a real thing. I
- 49:33Speaker 2: am not a fan of Donald Trump. I voted for
- 49:35Speaker 2: him twice. Not not a fan. now of what he's become,
- 49:39Speaker 2: maybe what he was all the time. I don't know.
- 49:42Speaker 2: But however, I'm not one of these people that gets
- 49:44Speaker 2: up every morning and thinks, gosh, what can I post?
- 49:48Speaker 2: What can I do to hate on Donald Trump today? Now,
- 49:51Speaker 2: I'm kind of busy. I get up. I do two radio,
- 49:53Speaker 2: three radio shows. I got a life. I got a wife.
- 49:56Speaker 2: I got stuff. You know, I don't sit around and
- 50:01Speaker 2: let hatred. I don't. Number one, I don't hate Donald Trump.
- 50:03Speaker 2: I don't hate anybody. Okay, except for Washington, Philadelphia, and
- 50:07Speaker 2: the New York Giants. Okay, I hate them, but that's all.
- 50:10Speaker 2: I don't sit around and worry about Donald Trump, what
- 50:12Speaker 2: Donald Trump is saying, what Donald Trump is doing. I
- 50:14Speaker 2: do it more than some because I have radio talk
- 50:17Speaker 2: shows to host. But I do think that some people
- 50:20Speaker 2: that have this hatred of Donald Trump or hatred of
- 50:23Speaker 2: the Republican Party or hatred of the liberals or whatever, man,
- 50:27Speaker 2: touch some grass every now and then. Just get outside, breathe,
- 50:30Speaker 2: get a hobby, get a dog, get something. A text
- 50:35Speaker 2: to the person who said Trump just started World War III.
- 50:37Speaker 2: Where have you been the last 25 years? Look at
- 50:39Speaker 2: everything that's been going on around the world over the
- 50:41Speaker 2: past 25 years. Those are all small battles for World
- 50:45Speaker 2: War III, so shut it, says the texter. I do
- 50:49Speaker 2: want to mention this just real quick, and I want
- 50:51Speaker 2: to bring this to your attention. We had a meeting
- 50:53Speaker 2: about this in the company yesterday. The year of our Lord, 2027,
- 50:57Speaker 2: next year, which will be here in a couple months,
- 50:59Speaker 2: by the way, this here radio station, WCHS, is turning 100.
- 51:04Speaker 2: years old. Now, we don't look a day over 93,
- 51:06Speaker 2: I know, but we do turn 100 next year. And
- 51:08Speaker 2: I'm actually, I'm told it was in November of 1927.
- 51:11Speaker 2: That was actually the first year in the month of WCHS.
- 51:15Speaker 2: And we're going to be celebrating it next month, especially,
- 51:18Speaker 2: or I'm sorry, next year. So we'll be telling you
- 51:20Speaker 2: more about that. But you just think about this station
- 51:23Speaker 2: that has been here, I mean, went on the air
- 51:25Speaker 2: before the Depression, before Pearl Harbor, World War II, Korea,
- 51:28Speaker 2: before Elvis, Kennedy being shot, Martin Luther King, the Vietnam War, Watergate,
- 51:33Speaker 2: Man on the Moon, 9-11, etc., etc. We're going to
- 51:37Speaker 2: do a little celebrating of our place next year. So
- 51:42Speaker 2: be putting your thinking caps on now.
- 51:44Speaker 12: T.J.
- 51:45Speaker 2: Meadows is here. How you doing, man? This place is
- 51:47Speaker 2: an institution.
- 51:48Speaker 5: When you're on the network here, you're not just on
- 51:50Speaker 5: Metro News, but you're in WCHS control.
- 51:54Speaker 1: This is an institution.
- 51:56Speaker 2: In radio and broadcasting. And most of the people here
- 51:58Speaker 2: should be in institutions. Present company included. What you got today?
- 52:05Speaker 5: Oh, never mind. I can't even do it after that.
- 52:07Speaker 2: That guy. That guy's coming up at 10.06. The Metro
- 52:10Speaker 2: News Talk Line along with Dave Wilson. I'll be back
- 52:12Speaker 2: later today with Amanda Barron for Metro News Midday presented
- 52:15Speaker 2: by Salango Law. We'll see you around 12 o'clock. Speaking
- 52:18Speaker 2: of celebrations, by the way, I failed to mention this. WEPM,
- 52:21Speaker 2: one of our stations in the Metro News family in Martinsburg,
- 52:23Speaker 2: celebrating their 80th birthday today. We'll talk about that on Midday.
- 52:26Speaker 2: Till then, have fun and love somebody.
- 52:42Speaker 1: WCHS AM 96.5 FM Charleston and 104.5 Crosslanes A WVRC
