Transcript
- 0:00What's up everybody? Charlie Marlow here.
- 0:02You probably know by now heck, you clicked on this video.
- 0:04You see it on the ticker. Cardinals signing Matt Carpenter
- 0:10to a one year deal. What do you guys think about
- 0:14this? I don't know.
- 0:15Make it make sense for me. I'm trying to figure this one
- 0:18out just like you. Full disclosure, I was working
- 0:22out, had a couple errands to run, got my parents coming into
- 0:26town, had to buy a couple snacks and beer and all that.
- 0:28Look at Twitter. Matt Carpenter coming back to
- 0:32the Saint Louis Cardinals press release was out.
- 0:35I'm not going to read that for you, but Ken Rosenthal on
- 0:39Twitter tweets out Carpenter deal is for $740,000.
- 0:45Source says the Braves are responsible for the remainder of
- 0:49the $5.5 million guarantee. So there's the good part right
- 0:54there. It's very cheap for the
- 0:55Cardinals, 740K for Matt Carpenter, according to Ken
- 0:58Rosenthal. When I saw this press release,
- 1:02I'm thinking why I got nothing against Carp by the way,
- 1:06whatsoever. Looks like the Cardinals are
- 1:08bringing the the old band back together.
- 1:11But I'm thinking, how does this make sense?
- 1:15I would think with Mason Wynn, a young shortstop unproven as a
- 1:20hitter, you would want to back up infielder to be able to play
- 1:24shortstop. Especially if Tommy Edmond is
- 1:26now mostly an outfielder. And I'm thinking Matt Carpenter,
- 1:30where does he even play? Can he still play the field?
- 1:33So this is, this is me being honest.
- 1:35We're going to find out together.
- 1:37Instead of doing my research 1st and then doing the video, I'm
- 1:40just going to do my research on the video because I honestly
- 1:44can't remember if Matt Carpenter even played defense last year
- 1:47for the San Diego Padres. So let's find out together.
- 1:51All right, baseball reference. Here we go.
- 1:53Matt Carpenter. Also, I didn't even remember how
- 1:58Matt Carpenter hit last year. OK, so I think we all remember
- 2:03that he went buck wild with the Yankees in 2022, but then he got
- 2:09hurt. So he only played 47 games with
- 2:11New York in 2022. We all know.
- 2:14Look, his last three years with the Cardinals were really,
- 2:17really bad. But it's OPS.
- 2:18Plus with the Yankees in 2022 was 216.
- 2:23His OPS was 1138. He had 15 bombs.
- 2:29Hit 3O5412 on base, 727 slug in 2022 with the Yankees, and
- 2:37that's in 47 games. Remember.
- 2:40OK, last year, not so good with the San Diego Padres and 81 OPS
- 2:46plus. So he's 19% below league average
- 2:50as a hitter. Played in 76 games, batted 176
- 2:56on base 322. We know the man can always walk.
- 2:59He'll always find a way to walk. His OPS was 641.
- 3:05I don't get it folks. I don't get it.
- 3:08So this is his age. 38 season for Matt Carpenter.
- 3:13He just turned 38 in November. Obviously we all know played for
- 3:16the Cardinals for a long time, 11 seasons.
- 3:19He was great with the Cardinals. How many All Stars?
- 3:233 All Stars What 1. Silver Slugger in 2013 had that
- 3:29amazing year in 2013 where he led the league in runs with 126.
- 3:33Led the league in hits with 199, Led the league in double S with
- 3:3655, Led the league in walks the following year, 2014 Ninety five
- 3:41walks. Led the league in double S, 2015
- 3:44with 44 double S This guy's gotten MVP votes with the
- 3:48Cardinals. 4th in the MVP in 2013, 12th in 2015, ninth in
- 3:552018. But that's a long time ago,
- 3:57folks. I don't know about this one.
- 4:00What do you guys think? Comment.
- 4:02Like, subscribe. Let me know what you think.
- 4:04And as I'm being honest with you again, I didn't remember how
- 4:09Matt Carpenter hit last year. I actually thought he hit better
- 4:12than he did once. I just read the stats.
- 4:15Not very good. He's entering his age, 38
- 4:18season. And also let's look at defense
- 4:22because I'm thinking to myself, can this man still play the
- 4:25field at all? Can he play any first base?
- 4:28Was he mostly ADH? So let's look at the last couple
- 4:31years. OK?
- 4:33So first let's go back to 2022 with the Yankees.
- 4:38So 20/22. He DH 16 times.
- 4:45Wow. He actually played outfield 15
- 4:49games. Played right field in 12 games
- 4:52in 2022, Played first base in five games.
- 4:56So what I see left field three games, third base actually
- 4:59played two games. So essentially DH.
- 5:04But man, he actually played fifteen games in the outfield in
- 5:072022. But let's look at last year.
- 5:10Because again, 2022 is with the Yankees, 2023 is with the San
- 5:14Diego Padres. He is ADH for 55 games.
- 5:22Last year he's a first baseman for 13 games.
- 5:27Matt Carpenter is. We're looking at starts.
- 5:30So he started 48 games as the DH for the Padres and he started 10
- 5:35games as a first baseman, I would think.
- 5:39I mean, could he could he ever just for a game or two, play
- 5:42third still, maybe for a game or two.
- 5:46But I doubt you want that any more than than just that.
- 5:50Remember, you got Brendan Donovan.
- 5:52He can move all over the infield, be your super utility
- 5:55guy who can also hit. So can Matt Carpenter, at age
- 5:5938, still play some some first base?
- 6:01Can he be a backup first baseman to Paul Goldschmidt when he
- 6:05needs a rest? You can bring in the left-handed
- 6:08hitter, do a little. I'm not calling this a platoon,
- 6:11obviously, because Goldie's going to play the majority.
- 6:13But every once in a while, if there's a tough righty and
- 6:16there's some numbers where where Goldie needs a day, maybe Goldie
- 6:22DH is whatever it is. Matt Carpenter can play a little
- 6:25first base, so Matt Carpenter can DH.
- 6:28But man, you also have you have a veteran team where a lot of
- 6:34these guys you're thinking are going to be DHS in terms of
- 6:39getting Nolan Arenado off his feet, getting Paul Goldschmidt
- 6:44off his feet. How about Wilson Contreras and
- 6:47and and what if Ivan Herrera also becomes a really good
- 6:51catcher and all of a sudden Herrera's catching a decent
- 6:54amount of games and and Contreras will still catch
- 6:57obviously hopefully the most games.
- 6:59But is Wilson Contreras going to DHA?
- 7:01Bunch of games? How?
- 7:02How many at bats can you really find for Matt Carpenter?
- 7:05I mean, pinch hit type guy, what do you think?
- 7:09Obviously it's very cheap, so it is what it is there.
- 7:13I'm just trying to, I'm trying to make it make sense from a
- 7:15roster standpoint. And let me look by the way, I'm
- 7:19trying to think of guys like Arenado and whatnot, like how
- 7:22many games they DH Ed, I know I looked at this couple years ago.
- 7:28OK, so Arenado last year, DH Ed, 15 games.
- 7:36Let's look at Goldie, Paul Goldschmidt.
- 7:40So I'm just trying to kind of carve up DH opportunities for
- 7:43the Cardinals to see if Matt Carpenter can slide in there a
- 7:45little bit. So Goldie, DH21 games.
- 7:48So between those two that is 36. You're getting close to 1/4 of
- 7:54the games. DH by those fellows right there.
- 7:57Let's look at Contreras, Contreras, Wilson Contreras,
- 8:01which you got to think also that he will DHA little more because
- 8:04Kisner was your typical 50 game backup in a typical healthy
- 8:09season. We had John Mozelac on the radio
- 8:12show Hot Take Central 590 The Fan.
- 8:14He doesn't want Yvonne Herrera to be that.
- 8:18Hopefully he plays more. I don't know how many games that
- 8:21is, but Wilson Contreras DH30 games last year.
- 8:27So just between Goldie Arnado and Wilson Contreras, if my math
- 8:32is correct, that's 66 games DH. You can rotate a bunch of other
- 8:36guys. So Matt Carpenter, I mean, you
- 8:39can you can find a couple games for MDH, but I don't know this
- 8:43one, this one doesn't really make sense from a roster
- 8:47standpoint to me. I understand the nostalgia and
- 8:50Cardinal fans are going to be mad for me.
- 8:52Even saying that Matt Carpenter was a great Cardinal for years
- 8:57and years and years, the last three years were really rough,
- 9:00even felt bad for the dude. He was making a lot of money,
- 9:02but still he was. He was not hitting.
- 9:05Fans were pissed. I was happy to see him go to New
- 9:07York and turn things around and be good.
- 9:11I don't know. I just, I don't understand this
- 9:13mood from a from a roster standpoint.
- 9:15I get that it's cheap. I'm not going to complain too
- 9:18much. I guess anything you get, if
- 9:21there's any type of positive for Matt Carpenter, it's all good.
- 9:25I just feel like you have so many good young position players
- 9:30fighting for at bats, even at the DH spot.
- 9:33Look at somebody like Dylan Carlson.
- 9:35If every once in a while he's playing outfield, but you got DH
- 9:39to go around, Brendan Donovan, he's going to be bouncing all
- 9:42around the infield. You got a bunch of guys who kind
- 9:45of played different positions, mix and match with the outfield.
- 9:50Again, I don't think we're going to see Carpenter at all in the
- 9:52outfield, but but it's not the craziest thing because he did
- 9:55play a little bit outfield in New York, as we mentioned two
- 9:58years ago. I mean, could he play a couple
- 10:00games at at third base, maybe a couple, mostly DH, mostly first
- 10:06base obviously. So I don't know.
- 10:09You know, you knew something was coming though with this James
- 10:11Nail move. Where where did he sign?
- 10:14Was it? I know somewhere in Asia, Kia,
- 10:18A-Team, that's Kia something. So in the James Nail, I'm
- 10:23looking it up right now. When the James Nail news
- 10:27happened, you thought the Cardinals were going to do
- 10:29something. Today.
- 10:30I think most people assume probably a reliever.
- 10:33Where's he going? James Aubrey Nail is an American
- 10:35professional baseball pitcher for the Kia Tigers of the KBO
- 10:38League. Of course, the Korean Baseball
- 10:43League. So James Nail, who's from Cape
- 10:45Girardeau, is headed there. So that opened up the spot for
- 10:49Matt Carpenter on the Rooster. I don't know, man.
- 10:54And ladies, I just don't get it. I don't get it.
- 10:57I'm not mad about it. I don't really care that much.
- 10:59But I don't think it makes sense.
- 11:01What do you think? Am I wrong?
- 11:02Do you like the nostalgia? Do you like that they're
- 11:05bringing the band back together, Getting the band back together
- 11:08with Lance lens back? I mean, Yadi's a coach.
- 11:12Daniel Discalzo's a coach. I don't know.
- 11:18I don't know. And I know I'm not saying a lot,
- 11:21but so I'm trying to process how this makes sense.
- 11:24If it's just the veteran guy, you want veteran leadership
- 11:28couple ABS here and there little pinch hit opportunity.
- 11:32I don't think we saw anything in 2023 based on the stats that
- 11:35Matt Carpenter is going to have a a great year.
- 11:40I mean you can understand why coming off 2022 the Padres gave
- 11:44him a shot because he was amazing and then he got hurt.
- 11:46I don't know folks, I'll I'll keep this short.
- 11:49I'll keep this video short. Breaking news I got a lot to do.
- 11:52It's my daughter's birthday by the way it's her 6th birthday so
- 11:54I'm we're trying to do birthday stuff also but Matt Carpenter
- 11:58one year deal. It's not very much money as I
- 12:00mentioned earlier Ken Rosenthal 740K, the Braves are paying the
- 12:06remainder of the $5.5 million guarantee.
- 12:10And real quick, before I, before I go, I'm just going to search
- 12:14Twitter. And by the way, did anybody
- 12:15break this story? Because I got a press release
- 12:18and I saw the the tweet from the Cardinals.
- 12:21I don't know if any reporter actually broke this story.
- 12:24I'm just gonna. I'm searching Matt Carpenter to
- 12:27see if there's any news on this. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,
- 12:30one year contract, blah, blah, blah, blah, Matt Carpenter,
- 12:34blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. All right, That's all I got.
- 12:38Maybe we'll talk more over the weekend.
- 12:40Probably not, because my parents are in town, so I probably won't
- 12:42be doing a ton of work. But Matt Carpenter, he's back,
- 12:44he's 38 years old. Kind of fits with this team,
- 12:47right? Everybody's old.
- 12:49Well, at least the starters are. Got some good young position
- 12:51players. But Carp, old Goldie, old
- 12:56Arenado, older. It is what it is.
- 12:58I don't know how this really helps the 2024 Cardinals on the
- 13:02field. I don't know if he even plays
- 13:06the field. Maybe a little for space.
- 13:08I'm not mad about it. I don't care that much.
- 13:10I'm not a hater. I just don't know if it makes
- 13:13any sense. I understand you get an infield
- 13:15that can play back up shortstop. I understand you want a
- 13:18left-handed hitter if he can kind of play a little first
- 13:21base. But then again, you got, I mean
- 13:24you got some left-handed pop with Nolan Norman with Lars
- 13:28Newbar with Brendan Donovan, switch hitter Tommy Edmond,
- 13:33switch hitter, Dylan Carlson. I don't know folks make it make
- 13:37sense. What do you think?
- 13:38I don't get it. Maybe you guys get it better
- 13:41than me and comment and let me know what you think.
- 13:43If you like the show, share the show.
