- 2:28Speaker 5: announced earlier this week that a new hotel is being
- 2:32Speaker 5: build in Well, actually wasn't announced. It was announced a
- 2:33Speaker 5: long time ago that hotel was being in Charleston, was
- 2:36Speaker 5: being built in Charleston, and for some reason, everybody in
- 2:39Speaker 5: social media losing their mind over it and not realizing
- 2:42Speaker 5: why we need another hotel in Charleston. If I get time,
- 2:45Speaker 5: I'm gonna explain to you why we do need another

- 3:06Speaker 5: Let's welcome in, Angie Gillenwater now from the Kennaal Charleston,
- 3:09Speaker 5: UMaine Association with this week's Adopt Me Please Pet of
- 3:12Speaker 5: the Week, Angie.
- 3:13Speaker 6: Good morning, Good morning.
- 3:16Speaker 5: And as always, our pet's picture posted on my social media.
- 3:20Speaker 5: You can check out the picture of Barry that's our
- 3:23Speaker 5: dog this week. Barry's photo posted Dave Allen Radio on
- 3:26Speaker 5: Facebook and at Dave A seventy on X. The artist
- 3:29Speaker 5: formerly known as Twitter tell us all about Barry.
- 3:33Speaker 7: Well, I personally cannot say a good enough good things
- 3:36Speaker 7: about Barry when I say he is a staff favorite
- 3:39Speaker 7: and the perfect dog. He truly is. He's so easy
- 3:44Speaker 7: to walk on the leash. I promise you if you
- 3:47Speaker 7: go to the shelter, Barry will not be in his kennel.
- 3:49Speaker 7: He's gonna be on a walk with either a staff
- 3:52Speaker 7: member or a volunteer. Everybody just loves him. But he's
- 3:55Speaker 7: about six years old, which puts him close to the
- 3:58Speaker 7: senior age, and he would do best as the only
- 4:02Speaker 7: pet in your home. He could probably coexist with like
- 4:07Speaker 7: a goldfish or something that lives, you know, on a
- 4:09Speaker 7: countertop and far away from him. But other furry friends
- 4:14Speaker 7: like cats, dogs, ferrets will probably want to stay away
- 4:17Speaker 7: from them.
- 4:19Speaker 5: Not so much.
- 4:20Speaker 7: No, No, he prefers to be the center of the
- 4:22Speaker 7: tension and that's that's totally okay, we respect that for him.
- 4:26Speaker 5: No, he's a beautiful dog. I mean he really is
- 4:28Speaker 5: vaccinated and all that stuff fixed. Has he got all
- 4:31Speaker 5: that taken care of?
- 4:32Speaker 7: Oh yeah, he's ready to roll out of that building
- 4:35Speaker 7: as soon as you pick him.
- 4:37Speaker 5: Well, he's a beautiful dog. Any idea what kind? I know,
- 4:39Speaker 5: we try to play this game every week and you're
- 4:41Speaker 5: about as good as as the Zion. But do you
- 4:43Speaker 5: have any any idea what kind of dog Barry might be?
- 4:46Speaker 7: So he is more on the petite side, I would
- 4:50Speaker 7: say he's probably like a forty to fifty pound dog,
- 4:53Speaker 7: So I wouldn't He has the coloring and like definitely
- 4:55Speaker 7: the face shape of maybe a mastive mix, but he's
- 4:58Speaker 7: definitely not that size. Okay, So probably you're run of
- 5:02Speaker 7: the mill West Virginia brown dog for Barry.
- 5:04Speaker 5: Well, and he would make a I would think a
- 5:07Speaker 5: great family pet. But as you said, just know, going
- 5:11Speaker 5: in that he's not so much on other animals, and
- 5:13Speaker 5: that's okay, you know, So just know that if you've
- 5:15Speaker 5: got other animals right now, Barry may not be the
- 5:17Speaker 5: dog for you. But if you are looking for a
- 5:20Speaker 5: dog and you don't have any other animals, as you said,
- 5:22Speaker 5: maybe other than the goldfish or something like that, Barry
- 5:25Speaker 5: would be the ideal dog. I mean one hundred percent,
- 5:29Speaker 5: as you said, Angie, based on his personality, that would
- 5:32Speaker 5: make him a great family dog.
- 5:33Speaker 7: I would think, oh yeah, he is absolutely one of
- 5:36Speaker 7: the best dogs I've come across at the shelter. And
- 5:39Speaker 7: I'm telling you, if you ask any of our staff
- 5:41Speaker 7: or volunteers, they're gonna say Barry is one of their
- 5:44Speaker 7: favorite shelter pets. He's just so great. What he doesn't
- 5:48Speaker 7: have for, you know, other dogs or other critters, he
- 5:50Speaker 7: makes up four tenfold in loving people. So he is
- 5:54Speaker 7: a very social and friendly dog.
- 5:55Speaker 5: And you said he walks great on a leash and
- 5:57Speaker 5: he loves his toys, he does.
- 6:00Speaker 7: Indeed.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Talking to Angie Gillawater from the Canal to Charleston U
- 6:03Speaker 5: Main Association, the Dave Allen Sheill and five eighty Live
- 6:06Speaker 5: brought to you in part by Bridge Valley offering custom
- 6:08Speaker 5: Taylor Trainings to supply skilled graduates and apprenticeships for your company.
- 6:12Speaker 5: Visit Bridge Valley dot eed U. Now I had a
- 6:15Speaker 5: text of the show about that, but I was gonna
- 6:17Speaker 5: that was me my next point anyway, on your social
- 6:19Speaker 5: media yesterday, you took in nearly thirty nearly nearly thirty
- 6:24Speaker 5: yesterday alone. That's that's a lot. That's a lot of
- 6:27Speaker 5: pets there, Angie.
- 6:29Speaker 7: Yeah, yesterday was a tough one to be at the
- 6:31Speaker 7: shelter of everyone was very on edge, if you will.
- 6:35Speaker 7: But we're we're very glad to be able to help.
- 6:38Speaker 7: We are just struggling for space because not only do
- 6:41Speaker 7: we take in the thirty yesterday, but we have about
- 6:44Speaker 7: close to twenty more come in today and that you know,
- 6:48Speaker 7: desperately need to come in that need our help now.
- 6:51Speaker 7: So we if you have been thinking about adopting or
- 6:54Speaker 7: even taking a dog for a sleepover, let us know
- 6:58Speaker 7: we would be super happy to have you and you
- 7:00Speaker 7: would be helping us out a ton in our current situation.
- 7:04Speaker 5: Yeah, we had And as I said, I was gonna
- 7:06Speaker 5: mention that anyway, and I appreciate the texture sending that in.
- 7:08Speaker 5: They actually sent me a picture of your post that
- 7:11Speaker 5: you did on the Facebook page where you had a
- 7:15Speaker 5: mama dog that was brought in and she arrived I'm
- 7:18Speaker 5: reading off your post right now, arrived just in the
- 7:20Speaker 5: nick of time, not to have her puppies in the cold,
- 7:22Speaker 5: rainy weather. So far, she'd had four, but is still
- 7:26Speaker 5: an active labor And as you whoever does your you
- 7:30Speaker 5: know social media, said, the shelter is not a great
- 7:32Speaker 5: place to raise babies. It's noisy, there could be sick
- 7:35Speaker 5: animals there, so on and so forth. So beautiful picture
- 7:37Speaker 5: and I appreciate the texture for sending that in of
- 7:40Speaker 5: that beautiful dog in and her puppies. So just again,
- 7:45Speaker 5: it is a rough day, as you said at the
- 7:46Speaker 5: shelter yesterday, and you guys desperately need help.
- 7:50Speaker 7: That is true. Me and one other person share our
- 7:53Speaker 7: social media responsibility. So thank you so much for coming.
- 7:59Speaker 7: But yeah, we if you are looking for a small dog,
- 8:02Speaker 7: a big dog, a certain color, a certain temperament, we
- 8:05Speaker 7: have them and we would be one hundred percent willing
- 8:07Speaker 7: to match make if it means a dog is going
- 8:09Speaker 7: to get out of there for a little bit.
- 8:11Speaker 5: And cats too, don't forget the cats.
- 8:13Speaker 7: Cats too, cats. We are a little we have a
- 8:15Speaker 7: little more wiggle room on space, but we one percent.
- 8:19Speaker 7: Like I said before, I'm a cat lady. I won't
- 8:22Speaker 7: help matchmake you do your cat, but yeah, we also
- 8:26Speaker 7: need help with our cats.
- 8:27Speaker 5: All right. I saw on your social media speaking of such,
- 8:30Speaker 5: you folks took a trip down to Mercer County. Bit
- 8:33Speaker 5: of a road trip. What was that all about?
- 8:35Speaker 7: So our friends at Mercer County have been in the
- 8:38Speaker 7: same boat we have as far as being very full
- 8:41Speaker 7: and needing some help from the public. The issue with
- 8:45Speaker 7: Mercer County is they didn't have as many programs set
- 8:49Speaker 7: up as KHA does, like the fostering program or even
- 8:54Speaker 7: really just a great social media presence. So they had
- 8:57Speaker 7: asked us if we could come help them and train
- 8:59Speaker 7: them on a couple things that we do at CASEYHA,
- 9:02Speaker 7: And that's exactly what we did. We went to help
- 9:04Speaker 7: them out, yeah, to hopefully get more of their pets
- 9:07Speaker 7: out of the shelters.
- 9:08Speaker 5: All right, good stuff that you're able to help out
- 9:11Speaker 5: the other shelters in the area. Also, I do want
- 9:14Speaker 5: to mention and we will continue to mention as we
- 9:16Speaker 5: get closer. Today, tuxes and tails, it's your big events
- 9:19Speaker 5: coming up.
- 9:20Speaker 7: Yeah, it's getting closer. It is creeping up on me
- 9:22Speaker 7: very quickly.
- 9:23Speaker 5: And you got information available about that on your social
- 9:26Speaker 5: media and also on your website as well. So let's
- 9:31Speaker 5: try to get some dogs adopted again. You took in
- 9:33Speaker 5: twenty nine yesterday, and I'm assuming this Mama dog. Technically,
- 9:38Speaker 5: if that was let's say number twenty nine, we had
- 9:41Speaker 5: at least four more added to that when you count
- 9:43Speaker 5: the puppies, right, that is true.
- 9:45Speaker 7: And she, like I said, she's still an active labor
- 9:48Speaker 7: so probably adding more and more to that number as well.
- 9:51Speaker 5: All right, and she will let you go. I'll let
- 9:53Speaker 5: you get back to it. I do appreciate it. Thanks
- 9:54Speaker 5: a lot. We'll talk to you next week.
- 9:56Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 9:57Speaker 5: You have a good one as well. Angie Gillenwater from
- 9:59Speaker 5: the Canal Charleston New Association TEX says, I wish all
- 10:02Speaker 5: our local businesses would consider adopting company mascots, dogs and cats.
- 10:07Speaker 5: All business owners please consider this. I will say this.
- 10:10Speaker 5: When I worked at another radio station group here in
- 10:15Speaker 5: the Kanaw Valley at one point, Now this was not
- 10:17Speaker 5: a station dog per se. It actually belonged to one
- 10:21Speaker 5: of the workers there in the office but she brought
- 10:23Speaker 5: the dog into work every day. I don't know what
- 10:26Speaker 5: the I think we have a no I think we
- 10:29Speaker 5: have a no animal policy in the building here because
- 10:33Speaker 5: when we first started doing this segment, I could tell
- 10:35Speaker 5: the story now, when we first started doing this adopt
- 10:38Speaker 5: me Please Better the Week segment a few years ago
- 10:41Speaker 5: on this show, one of the dogs took care of
- 10:47Speaker 5: his or her business on the control room floor while
- 10:49Speaker 5: we were on the air. So that pretty much did
- 10:52Speaker 5: it for us having an animal in here. But again,
- 10:54Speaker 5: you know, it was nervous. I mean we I mean,
- 10:56Speaker 5: we've had announcers. It's probably done the same thing, you know.
- 10:59Speaker 5: So I'm just saying, so, you know, good, good idea
- 11:03Speaker 5: from the texture adopt get yourself a station or a business.
- 11:07Speaker 5: Dog or cat. Barry is our pet of the Week.
- 11:11Speaker 5: Picture posted Dave Alan Radio on Facebook and at Dave
- 11:13Speaker 5: a seventy on Acts. Six years old. Came in as
- 11:16Speaker 5: astray from the Cistonville area. Already vaccinated, already fixed, ready
- 11:20Speaker 5: to go home, very social, very happy, dog loves his toys,
- 11:24Speaker 5: walks great on a leash, does though, need to be
- 11:28Speaker 5: the only pet in the house again, And she said
- 11:31Speaker 5: maybe goldfish will be okay, but not so much another
- 11:34Speaker 5: dogs and cats. But if you're looking for a perfect dog,
- 11:37Speaker 5: he prefers humans over other pets. I'm the opposite. I
- 11:41Speaker 5: prefer pets over humans. But that's just me. So go
- 11:44Speaker 5: get Barry. And again, I've got his picture posted on
- 11:46Speaker 5: my social media. So let's get Barry adopted. Would be
- 11:48Speaker 5: a great, great pet for you and your family. Big

- 14:52Speaker 5: Well, no, it's first class. It'll even be better when
- 14:54Speaker 5: we learn how to operate. Ever, you know where We're
- 14:57Speaker 5: still learning as we go and KYLEA thinks this is
- 14:59Speaker 5: the first time you've been on the show. Is that right?
- 15:00Speaker 4: That is correct?
- 15:01Speaker 5: All right? Welcome, welcome Lord. Now, what what do you
- 15:03Speaker 5: do to tell us about Kyle? We already know about
- 15:05Speaker 5: this guy, but about Johnny. But let's let's talk about you.
- 15:08Speaker 11: So we have the Nitro Athletic Complex where we have
- 15:10Speaker 11: these wonderful pickaball courts, and I'm kind of the guy
- 15:14Speaker 11: that facilitates play there, which whether it's tournaments, leagues, give lessons, clinics.
- 15:19Speaker 11: I'm also a certified instructor and things like that. But
- 15:22Speaker 11: like I said, just facilitating play at NITER and getting
- 15:24Speaker 11: people to.
- 15:25Speaker 5: Come there, all right. And and Johnny and I've been
- 15:27Speaker 5: talking the last couple of years about about how big
- 15:29Speaker 5: pickleball is. But you're you're on the ground there. I mean,
- 15:32Speaker 5: you know how big pickleball is here in the Kenawah Valley.
- 15:35Speaker 11: Yeah, And it's just growing and growing, I think. I mean,
- 15:39Speaker 11: I encourage everyone to come out and play. It doesn't
- 15:41Speaker 11: matter athletic or not, age doesn't matter. I think everyone
- 15:46Speaker 11: has a good time with it.
- 15:48Speaker 5: Now, Rutherford, aren't you I thought you were stepping back.
- 15:51Speaker 5: You can't stay away, can you? Man, I can't say, well,
- 15:53Speaker 5: I love it, pulling that microphone a little closer to you.
- 15:56Speaker 4: I'm still involved with Metro. They've asked me to help
- 15:58Speaker 4: them with their employees Association thun.
- 16:00Speaker 5: Metro nine one one, nine one one.
- 16:02Speaker 4: And this was about, uh, the great thing about pickleball.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Just let me interject here for a second. I'm retired now,
- 16:08Speaker 4: uh huh. Kyl's in his early thirties. And the great
- 16:10Speaker 4: thing about pickleball it doesn't matter. We can play and
- 16:13Speaker 4: be competitive against each other, just the nature of the game.
- 16:15Speaker 5: Well, I noticed when Kyle said doesn't matter your age,
- 16:17Speaker 5: he looked at you. I'm just I'm just saying, just
- 16:20Speaker 5: saying insane. But now you're still I mean, I give it.
- 16:23Speaker 5: I give you credit, man, because you're still out there,
- 16:25Speaker 5: you know, being competitive. You're not that old, but you're
- 16:28Speaker 5: out there being competitive and staying active and doing what
- 16:31Speaker 5: you got to do to stay in shave.
- 16:32Speaker 12: Man.
- 16:32Speaker 5: That's good stuff.
- 16:33Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a great game. It's enjoyable, It keeps you,
- 16:35Speaker 4: It keeps your cardio up and your coordination, you know,
- 16:40Speaker 4: the way you play. It's really a great game to
- 16:42Speaker 4: keep you in shape.
- 16:42Speaker 5: And this thing has become so big since the first
- 16:45Speaker 5: time you were how many years have you been We'll say,
- 16:48Speaker 5: because we've been talking pickleball for the last couple of years.
- 16:50Speaker 5: I thought, but uh, this event, I mean it it
- 16:54Speaker 5: brings in the top the cream. I mean, I know
- 16:56Speaker 5: we got the Masters going on right now. Uh, but
- 16:59Speaker 5: this is I mean becoming on this in this part
- 17:01Speaker 5: of the country, like the Masters of pickleball pretty much right.
- 17:05Speaker 11: That's correct. Like last year we had Susannah Barr, top
- 17:09Speaker 11: app pro. She came in. If you guys can remember,
- 17:12Speaker 11: we call her the mj of pickleball.
- 17:13Speaker 5: She's the Michael Jordan of pickleball.
- 17:16Speaker 11: Yeah, So she came into town, and then there were
- 17:18Speaker 11: a bunch of other up and coming players. We actually
- 17:20Speaker 11: had two guys that were in our tournament last year
- 17:24Speaker 11: that just signed PPA contracts, which is one of like
- 17:27Speaker 11: the highest level of pickleball. So they've progressed from success
- 17:30Speaker 11: at Nighter last year all the way to the top.
- 17:33Speaker 5: They've gone to the NFL of pickleball pretty much pretty
- 17:35Speaker 5: much exactly. And this and John and I've talked about
- 17:38Speaker 5: this for the last couple of years. Thinks this this
- 17:42Speaker 5: event has become so huge. But pickleball itself has become
- 17:45Speaker 5: so I mean, most people ten years ago never even
- 17:47Speaker 5: heard of pickleball, maybe five years ago never heard of pickleball,
- 17:51Speaker 5: and it's the hottest thing. It's not a sting in
- 17:52Speaker 5: America as far as sports go right now exactly. And
- 17:55Speaker 5: uh and talk about what goes on with this tournament.
- 17:59Speaker 5: I mean, it's as far as all these people coming
- 18:01Speaker 5: in and you know what I like, Captain capitalist here,
- 18:04Speaker 5: what I like is when they come in, they're spending
- 18:06Speaker 5: money and they're putting heads in beds, is Tim Brady
- 18:10Speaker 5: over the CVB would say, And they're eating at the
- 18:12Speaker 5: restaurants and they're doing all the things like that.
- 18:14Speaker 7: Joe.
- 18:15Speaker 4: What was amazing the first the second year, especially as
- 18:17Speaker 4: when we went to a little bit of the pros
- 18:18Speaker 4: coming in the city of Nitro, restaurants actually ran out
- 18:21Speaker 4: of food. They weren't prepared for the amount of people
- 18:23Speaker 4: that would come into the city of Nitro. And that's
- 18:25Speaker 4: not only from out of state. We have people coming
- 18:27Speaker 4: from Idaho, High Kentucky, North Carolina, and the restaurants actually
- 18:31Speaker 4: ran out of food. But it's also people from Huntington, Canova.
- 18:35Speaker 4: One of the things I want to make sure I
- 18:36Speaker 4: say is this we're talking about the pros, but this
- 18:39Speaker 4: tournament's for everybody. Indeed, this tournament goes even to the
- 18:41Speaker 4: people the players that just started that are three o's,
- 18:44Speaker 4: which are the beginners, all the way to the four
- 18:46Speaker 4: point five to five o's, so it's for everybody. We
- 18:49Speaker 4: invite everybody to come out. We keep the levels separate,
- 18:52Speaker 4: so if you're a beginner, you're playing against beginners. If
- 18:54Speaker 4: you're intermediate, you're playing against intermediate. So is this tournament's
- 18:56Speaker 4: for everybody?
- 18:57Speaker 5: And one of the dates again.
- 18:58Speaker 4: It starts to thirtieth, Pay thirty first and June first
- 19:02Speaker 4: at Nitro.
- 19:03Speaker 5: And the reason we always have you on early is
- 19:05Speaker 5: to kind some people can make plans for it, and
- 19:07Speaker 5: there's people that come out just you know, just like
- 19:10Speaker 5: any other event, you know, just watch.
- 19:12Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean there's there's if you were to come
- 19:15Speaker 11: to this term and you'll see people all along the
- 19:17Speaker 11: court watching the play and not only watching like we
- 19:21Speaker 11: were talking about, just the pros of watching the amateurs,
- 19:24Speaker 11: watching your friends, things like that, and that's competitive on
- 19:27Speaker 11: every court.
- 19:27Speaker 4: It's quite the social event.
- 19:29Speaker 5: Well that's that's big. But Dave Allen showing five any
- 19:31Speaker 5: Live brought to you, in part by snap Fitsiness, offering
- 19:34Speaker 5: a wide array of professional wellness services including customized personal training,
- 19:37Speaker 5: license recovery experts, and a staff of dietitians. Five great
- 19:40Speaker 5: locations Hurricane Charleston, Barbersville, Winfield and Milton Business Snapfitness dot
- 19:45Speaker 5: comferen Detales talk about to Metro nine to one one's
- 19:48Speaker 5: involvement in this job.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Well, Metro nine one one, of course, that's where I
- 19:51Speaker 4: got involved, being in the retired executive director of Metro
- 19:54Speaker 4: nine on one. We have great employees that every day
- 19:57Speaker 4: enter over fifteen hundred calls, five hundred thousand calls the year,
- 20:00Speaker 4: everything from cardiac arrest to delivering babies, and the proceeds,
- 20:04Speaker 4: the profit from this fundraiser basically for them goes to
- 20:07Speaker 4: reward them when they do a good job. Sometimes they
- 20:10Speaker 4: do CPR and they'll save a life. And what we
- 20:12Speaker 4: do with that we use a gift card to twenty
- 20:15Speaker 4: five door gift card to buy them lunch for doing
- 20:17Speaker 4: a great job and save with somebody's life or delivered
- 20:19Speaker 4: the baby.
- 20:19Speaker 5: And so again this is a big event as far
- 20:21Speaker 5: as tourism for the area goes. But there's something in
- 20:24Speaker 5: it for nine to one one that you're trying to
- 20:26Speaker 5: reward and you somebody that's done that your whole life.
- 20:29Speaker 5: I mean, you're trying to reward these employees for going
- 20:32Speaker 5: above and beyond. Yes, sir, what for people that may
- 20:35Speaker 5: have gone to this in the past. You talked about
- 20:37Speaker 5: the the Michael Jordan of pickleball coming back, talk about
- 20:40Speaker 5: some of the other maybe things that are new this
- 20:42Speaker 5: year that are you trying anything new this year?
- 20:44Speaker 11: So, actually, the big new thing is with the complex.
- 20:48Speaker 11: In the past that we've just had nine courts, nine
- 20:50Speaker 11: courts and seven there on the side, but now we
- 20:53Speaker 11: have a brand new covering over top of the courts
- 20:56Speaker 11: which will allow us to play twenty four to seven
- 21:00Speaker 11: all year long. The big problem here in Charleston is
- 21:03Speaker 11: in the winter it's kind of hard to find play,
- 21:06Speaker 11: which this facility will now allow us to do things
- 21:09Speaker 11: like that. But this year we have we've we have
- 21:13Speaker 11: a little bit more money on the line trying to
- 21:15Speaker 11: incentivize more people to come as well as this year
- 21:19Speaker 11: we're instead of giving amateurs medals for winning, they'll get
- 21:22Speaker 11: a brand new backpack that says like number one one
- 21:25Speaker 11: Metro Gold Medals and things like that.
- 21:28Speaker 5: Yeah, and they can take that to their their whatever
- 21:31Speaker 5: their pickleball court is, whether it's that one or another
- 21:33Speaker 5: one to go in and it's got a intimidation.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Uh huh.
- 21:35Speaker 5: You see, you see this right here, champion, champion.
- 21:38Speaker 4: You know, Dave. One thing that's great about our community,
- 21:40Speaker 4: our pickleball community, is it's supported by the cities. Almost
- 21:43Speaker 4: every city in the valley has put new pickleball courts
- 21:46Speaker 4: in and so we thank the mayors for that. We
- 21:48Speaker 4: especially think Mayor case Bolt, he has really invested. We
- 21:51Speaker 4: have some of the best courts in our area, statewide,
- 21:56Speaker 4: in the local states, in the valley, everywhere. We just
- 21:59Speaker 4: have great courts in Nitro.
- 22:01Speaker 5: And people come in just to say that they've played
- 22:03Speaker 5: on those courts in Nitro. That's how good they are. Yes,
- 22:06Speaker 5: I mean because maybe in their respective communities they don't
- 22:09Speaker 5: have what Nitro has.
- 22:10Speaker 4: That's true, they're excellent courts.
- 22:12Speaker 5: Yeah. So again for people that are that are coming
- 22:16Speaker 5: out just just to watch, talk about the hours, talk
- 22:20Speaker 5: about the seating, talk about all this stuff that goes
- 22:22Speaker 5: along with that.
- 22:23Speaker 11: So, like we said, it'll be May thirtieth, May thirty first,
- 22:27Speaker 11: and June first, So Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Friday, will be singles.
- 22:31Speaker 11: It will be singles for everyone, whether you're an amateur pro.
- 22:35Speaker 11: Saturday will be gender doubles, which is men's and women's doubles.
- 22:39Speaker 11: Sunday we'll be mixed. I would encourage to come. You
- 22:42Speaker 11: can obviously stand along the side, bring a chair or
- 22:45Speaker 11: something like that. We should have bleachers on the side
- 22:47Speaker 11: that you'll be able to see and watch. We'll also
- 22:51Speaker 11: have food trucks and things like that for the visitors
- 22:53Speaker 11: to come and enjoy as well.
- 22:54Speaker 4: So, and we have Metro nine one employees given out
- 22:57Speaker 4: free water, taking care of the people. We take good
- 22:59Speaker 4: care of the spectator.
- 23:00Speaker 5: What about lessons for people to want to pick up
- 23:01Speaker 5: the game?
- 23:02Speaker 11: Yeah, great question. So Susannah Susannah bar that came in
- 23:06Speaker 11: last year. First, I want to say that she was
- 23:09Speaker 11: not only top level pickball knowledge and things like that,
- 23:13Speaker 11: but she was one of the most kind and genuinely hitter.
- 23:16Speaker 5: On the show last year. Didn't John, but I think
- 23:18Speaker 5: she called into the show last year.
- 23:20Speaker 11: Yeah, she was wonderful and we're excited to have her back.
- 23:22Speaker 11: But she is offering lessons for different levels of play,
- 23:26Speaker 11: whether you're a beginner, whether you're an advanced player. On Thursday,
- 23:30Speaker 11: so Thursday, May twenty ninth, so we'll have that going
- 23:33Speaker 11: on as well.
- 23:34Speaker 5: I mean, how many people, in whatever their sport is,
- 23:37Speaker 5: whether it's as I mentioned the Masters, because it's going
- 23:40Speaker 5: on right now. I mean, how many people can say
- 23:42Speaker 5: that they got a lesson, you know, from from Michael Jordan,
- 23:45Speaker 5: you know, you're getting You're getting you're getting a VP
- 23:49Speaker 5: from Aaron Judge or something like that. I mean, how
- 23:51Speaker 5: many people can can can say you're actually having the
- 23:53Speaker 5: best person to tell you what you're doing wrong or
- 23:56Speaker 5: what you need to do to be better.
- 23:58Speaker 11: Yeah, exactly. And I would encourag to everyone around to
- 24:01Speaker 11: take advantage of this opportunity that we have and you'll
- 24:04Speaker 11: learn from one of the best.
- 24:06Speaker 5: All right. And where is information available about this? People
- 24:10Speaker 5: want to learn more.
- 24:11Speaker 4: Well, go to the Charleston The best place to go
- 24:12Speaker 4: is the Charleston Pickleball Club Facebook page. That's the best
- 24:15Speaker 4: place to go. It's also the Metro nine one facebook page,
- 24:18Speaker 4: but the basically the Charleston Pickleball Club Facebook. All right.
- 24:22Speaker 5: And for people maybe Johnny that and that are listening
- 24:25Speaker 5: to us today, that you know, and you and I've
- 24:27Speaker 5: been talking about this for three years now, But for
- 24:29Speaker 5: people that maybe don't don't understand what we talk about
- 24:32Speaker 5: when we say pickleball, give us a little premer again
- 24:35Speaker 5: on what pickleball is. Explain the game.
- 24:37Speaker 11: So pickleball is sort of I like to it's a
- 24:40Speaker 11: combination of tennis, ping pong, and badminton. It's played on
- 24:45Speaker 11: a smaller court, tons of action, fast place to play,
- 24:49Speaker 11: and like John said, you'll get great cardio in it.
- 24:54Speaker 11: Hearts racing NonStop, and you're going to have a great time.
- 24:56Speaker 11: It's very social. You're face to face with people. Like
- 25:00Speaker 11: I don't come from a tennis background, but when you're
- 25:02Speaker 11: playing tennis, you're stretched all the way across the court.
- 25:06Speaker 11: Pickleball you're right up front, you're right there beside each
- 25:09Speaker 11: other having a good time. So yeah, I would encourage
- 25:13Speaker 11: everyone to come join us.
- 25:14Speaker 5: All right, So dates times again, and we'll probably have
- 25:17Speaker 5: you on as we get a little bit closer to
- 25:18Speaker 5: talk about logistics, because it takes a lot, Johnny, and
- 25:21Speaker 5: you've been involved in this since day one, it takes
- 25:23Speaker 5: a lot to pull this off, and so we'll have
- 25:25Speaker 5: you on again to talk about the logistics. But again,
- 25:27Speaker 5: give us the dates, the times, so on and so forth.
- 25:29Speaker 11: Thursday, May twenty ninth is when we have the clinics
- 25:32Speaker 11: with Susannah bar And the tournament will start on Friday,
- 25:35Speaker 11: May thirtieth, which will be singles. May thirty first, which
- 25:40Speaker 11: is a Saturday, will be gender doubles. In June first,
- 25:43Speaker 11: which is a Sunday, we'll be mixed doubles.
- 25:45Speaker 5: All right, And I've got the information posting on my
- 25:47Speaker 5: social media and Dave Allan Radio John sent me the
- 25:49Speaker 5: flyer and I posted it on there this twenty guys,
- 25:52Speaker 5: I appreciate you being here and John trying to retire.
- 25:55Speaker 4: I mean, you know, hey, Dave, I'm enjoying life. Pickleball
- 25:58Speaker 4: is a big part of my life that it does
- 26:00Speaker 4: keep you young, and I'm enjoying it. But I'm enjoying life.
- 26:03Speaker 4: Thank you.

- 29:33Speaker 15: The event was great, Thank you, thanks to you and
- 29:36Speaker 15: everybody who supported it. We sold plenty of tickets, We
- 29:38Speaker 15: had a nice vibe.
- 29:39Speaker 5: Was at the University of Charleston.
- 29:41Speaker 15: It was in the Irma Bird Gallery, that beautiful room.
- 29:44Speaker 15: We had a local musician named Jordan Dyer who played.
- 29:47Speaker 15: He even stayed longer and played longer than he had
- 29:50Speaker 15: promised to, which gave it's such a wonderful just relaxed atmosphere.
- 29:54Speaker 15: People were people who care about literacy and who read
- 29:57Speaker 15: to kids and who help us with our book distribution.
- 30:00Speaker 15: They came, Sponsors came, We had some new people come,
- 30:04Speaker 15: and we haven't finished all of the details yet, but
- 30:08Speaker 15: I imagine we're going to pass thirty thousand dollars in
- 30:11Speaker 15: what we made to support the cause.
- 30:13Speaker 5: It's great to have you here this week. And we
- 30:14Speaker 5: didn't really plan it this week because this is National
- 30:16Speaker 5: Library Week. Raw I had to had my good buddy
- 30:19Speaker 5: Megan Tarbett from the Putnam County Library on earlier this
- 30:22Speaker 5: week and on the state Wide show. Amanda and I
- 30:24Speaker 5: had the director out of Marion County on the show.
- 30:26Speaker 5: So we like to talk about literacy and what.
- 30:29Speaker 15: They are both friends of Read Aloud West Virginia.
- 30:31Speaker 5: Yes, I'm sure they are no doubt about that. And
- 30:33Speaker 5: speaking of this, you folks should get some national recognition.
- 30:36Speaker 5: I understand. How about that to talk about it.
- 30:38Speaker 15: We were so fortunate one of our volunteers in Berkeley
- 30:41Speaker 15: County last year I think, communicated with a reporter, Jackie
- 30:45Speaker 15: Valley at the Christian Science Monitor because she had written
- 30:48Speaker 15: a story about literacy and education and he, just as
- 30:51Speaker 15: a reader, emailed her and shared some details and she
- 30:55Speaker 15: was intrigued then and she said, oh, I wish I'd
- 30:58Speaker 15: known about this. And a year later she got in
- 31:01Speaker 15: touch and she was interested in her. Her idea was
- 31:05Speaker 15: she wanted to write about the role that the community
- 31:08Speaker 15: has in literacy. What outside of school, what do families
- 31:12Speaker 15: and the communities contribute to literacy? And she discovered Read
- 31:16Speaker 15: Aloud West Virginia was a great example an illustration to talk.
- 31:21Speaker 5: About that at any time, don as you well know,
- 31:26Speaker 5: anytime we can get positive coverage on dang near anything
- 31:31Speaker 5: that's going on to West Virginia. It's good, but particularly
- 31:33Speaker 5: when it comes to things like literacy and education and
- 31:37Speaker 5: things of that nature.
- 31:38Speaker 15: Fact, I know every West Virginia when you see West
- 31:41Speaker 15: Virginia pop up on the news or something, you sort
- 31:43Speaker 15: of hold your breath until you see how it's gonna go.
- 31:45Speaker 5: Here we go, here we go. That's what you mean.
- 31:48Speaker 5: But again, anything that we can do positive to put
- 31:51Speaker 5: because we are and I've talked about this over the
- 31:54Speaker 5: years in Radio don we are really really bad about
- 31:57Speaker 5: believing the negative stereotypes about ourselves. We can't expect others
- 32:04Speaker 5: that want to play amateur psychologists here, but we can't
- 32:06Speaker 5: expect others to view us differently when we don't view
- 32:09Speaker 5: ourselves any differently. And when we have these positive things, like,
- 32:12Speaker 5: as you said, a national respected publication that caught on
- 32:17Speaker 5: to something that was going on in West Virginia as
- 32:19Speaker 5: it relates to literacy, education, whatever, they grab a hold
- 32:24Speaker 5: of this and it tells the masses that, hey, you know,
- 32:26Speaker 5: West Virginia has actually got some good stuff going on.
- 32:28Speaker 15: We do some good things. So along those lines, Dave,
- 32:33Speaker 15: it's we have to pay attention to when things are
- 32:35Speaker 15: bad or when something's wrong because you can't fix it otherwise.
- 32:39Speaker 15: But it is very easy to not recognize when you
- 32:43Speaker 15: are improving and when you're making progress. And one of
- 32:47Speaker 15: the things that was in that story, if anybody wants
- 32:50Speaker 15: to look it up, The NAPE scores came out a
- 32:52Speaker 15: couple I don't know, a month or two or so ago,
- 32:55Speaker 15: and what they showed broadly across the country is that
- 32:57Speaker 15: reading scores had not moved very much in most places,
- 33:01Speaker 15: and West Virginia was one of the places where the
- 33:03Speaker 15: reading scores held study. They didn't drop like they did
- 33:07Speaker 15: in some places, but they didn't increase over the previous year.
- 33:10Speaker 15: A lot of people nationally held that up as oh, no,
- 33:15Speaker 15: nothing's working, this is bad news. I do not subscribe
- 33:18Speaker 15: to that interpretation because I see what's going on day
- 33:23Speaker 15: to day. I see some improvements. I think we talked
- 33:26Speaker 15: about this last time, about how schools across the country,
- 33:30Speaker 15: including West Virginia, are improving how they're teaching reading. They
- 33:34Speaker 15: are getting back to some things that were things that
- 33:37Speaker 15: were known years ago about teaching kids to sound out words.
- 33:40Speaker 15: They know a lot more now than even they did then.
- 33:43Speaker 15: And so I believe that seeing a year where things
- 33:46Speaker 15: are held steady is actually a step could be a
- 33:49Speaker 15: step to improvements.
- 33:50Speaker 5: I mean there is something again, there is something to
- 33:52Speaker 5: be said for, as you said, holding study and not
- 33:55Speaker 5: going backwards right. And what I think is interesting because
- 33:59Speaker 5: I'm the old guy that complains about everything on this show.
- 34:01Speaker 5: At my age, I'm already that guy, and I'll get
- 34:03Speaker 5: tagged with that all the time, you know, the exactly.
- 34:07Speaker 5: But we are learning though that in some ways, in
- 34:12Speaker 5: some ways that the old ways weren't so bad after all.
- 34:16Speaker 15: That's right. We even say that. I mean, I'm off
- 34:18Speaker 15: for learning new things and trying new things and innovation.
- 34:21Speaker 15: But one of the things we say around Read Aloud
- 34:23Speaker 15: because sometimes funders only want to fund what is new
- 34:26Speaker 15: and innovative, and we say, well, what about what's old
- 34:30Speaker 15: and works?
- 34:31Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 34:31Speaker 15: Yeah, so yeah, there is something to teaching kids how
- 34:35Speaker 15: to read in a way that has been shown for
- 34:37Speaker 15: more than a century to work.
- 34:39Speaker 5: So I had to Don Miller from Read Aloud, West Virginia,
- 34:41Speaker 5: Dave Island Show and five eighty Live, brought to you
- 34:42Speaker 5: in part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds.
- 34:46Speaker 5: One week and a day away from the Gomart home
- 34:48Speaker 5: run derby over to Ballpark Saturday, April nineteenth. The tales
- 34:51Speaker 5: available on their social media and at dirty Birds Baseball Dot.
- 34:54Speaker 5: Kyle will have Jill from the Dirty Birds on the
- 34:56Speaker 5: show next week to talk about that. All right, So
- 34:58Speaker 5: this is the time of year. You know, most schools
- 35:01Speaker 5: I would think in the area have already had their
- 35:03Speaker 5: spring break. If not, they're going to have it soon.
- 35:05Speaker 5: I think most already have. And I remember, you know,
- 35:09Speaker 5: in school around this time when the weather starts, and
- 35:11Speaker 5: trust me, at some point it is going to warm
- 35:13Speaker 5: up and stay warm for a while. You start thinking
- 35:15Speaker 5: about spring, and you start thinking about summer and things
- 35:18Speaker 5: of that nature and getting the heck out of the school.
- 35:21Speaker 5: But talk about some of the things that your group
- 35:23Speaker 5: does during those perhaps summer months, the months off, so
- 35:28Speaker 5: to speak exactly.
- 35:29Speaker 15: Yes, one of the things we do is help students
- 35:33Speaker 15: and schools prepare themselves for summer so that they're set
- 35:37Speaker 15: up for students to continue to build their reading skills.
- 35:42Speaker 15: And the biggest way we do that is distribute books
- 35:44Speaker 15: that excite kids that they will be tempted by and
- 35:48Speaker 15: want to spend time with during their summer break. Fun books,
- 35:52Speaker 15: things they're genuinely interested in. And the reason is when
- 35:55Speaker 15: children read for fun on their own, on their own time,
- 35:58Speaker 15: they can't help but practice the lesson in school. It's amazing.
- 36:01Speaker 15: Some people think that summer learning loss is a foregone conclusion.
- 36:05Speaker 15: I used to think that, But the more I learn
- 36:08Speaker 15: and the more I work on this, the more I
- 36:09Speaker 15: realize that that is. I believe that is a false assumption.
- 36:14Speaker 15: We do have a big problem with summer learning loss.
- 36:16Speaker 15: But when children read for fun, I don't know about you.
- 36:19Speaker 15: I used to like to read Nancy Drew in third grade.
- 36:22Speaker 5: That's not fantastic literature, but it's something.
- 36:26Speaker 15: But it's something, and it leads you to the next
- 36:29Speaker 15: thing til you get to really fantastic literature, and it
- 36:32Speaker 15: has its own charm. But when kids do that, when
- 36:34Speaker 15: they spend time with books that they enjoy, they actually
- 36:39Speaker 15: they actually maintain their reading skill over summer, and some
- 36:43Speaker 15: of them actually increase. So if they're being taught properly
- 36:46Speaker 15: during the school year and then they read for pleasure
- 36:49Speaker 15: during the summer, they can actually gain reading proficiency over
- 36:53Speaker 15: the summer, and at the very least they maintain it.
- 36:55Speaker 15: And that is when you start to see reading scores
- 36:58Speaker 15: go up year after year. After year when that's happening,
- 37:01Speaker 15: when you're not constantly trying to make up for this
- 37:04Speaker 15: summer slide, as some researchers call it.
- 37:07Speaker 5: The thing about when you talk about kids reading for
- 37:10Speaker 5: fun is you know most kids, probably though don are
- 37:14Speaker 5: not going to pick that up on their own. So
- 37:16Speaker 5: somebody's going to have to explain to them it it
- 37:20Speaker 5: can be fun, give it a try. You talked about
- 37:22Speaker 5: Nancy Drew. I mean, when I was a kid, I
- 37:24Speaker 5: was an avid reader. My stuff was sports books. You know,
- 37:27Speaker 5: it was it was, it was. That was my thing
- 37:29Speaker 5: still is as a matter of fact. I mean, I
- 37:30Speaker 5: love to read about sports. It's something. So I think
- 37:33Speaker 5: it's incumbent though, up on parents, guardians, teachers too, and
- 37:38Speaker 5: I know I know in in West Virginia schools that
- 37:40Speaker 5: I think they most try to do a really good
- 37:42Speaker 5: job of teaching. Okay, don't think about reading as something
- 37:46Speaker 5: that is an assignment. I have to read three chapters tonight.
- 37:49Speaker 2: Now.
- 37:49Speaker 5: Sometimes in life you have to do you got to
- 37:51Speaker 5: study the manual or whatever. You have to do that.
- 37:54Speaker 5: But it's got to But the parents, grandparents, teachers also
- 37:58Speaker 5: have to go in and say, hey, you can read
- 38:00Speaker 5: for fun. If you like, if you're somebody that is
- 38:04Speaker 5: interested in cars, there's some books about cars. You know
- 38:07Speaker 5: that you'll want to read how to rebuild that engine,
- 38:10Speaker 5: or you'll want to read about science, or read about
- 38:13Speaker 5: sports or entertainment or whatever.
- 38:14Speaker 15: You are. So on it, Dave, you have nailed it exactly.
- 38:18Speaker 3: This.
- 38:18Speaker 15: We distribute a lot of sports books, and we distribute
- 38:22Speaker 15: a lot of books about cars. It might surprise you
- 38:24Speaker 15: that children ask us for books about cooking. Kids want cookbooks.
- 38:27Speaker 5: Cooking is huge, and the case is here and the
- 38:29Speaker 5: kids cooking thing, not cooking kids, by the way, that's
- 38:33Speaker 5: a thing because you know all these shows you that
- 38:35Speaker 5: are on the web and on TV about you know,
- 38:38Speaker 5: these kids baking things. Yeah, it's a big thing.
- 38:40Speaker 15: And you think about that. When that book, when that
- 38:43Speaker 15: thing you have learned in school, and that book has
- 38:46Speaker 15: relevance to you in something you want to do in
- 38:48Speaker 15: your own life, that is the best reinforcement that you
- 38:51Speaker 15: can get. So I want to tell you about something
- 38:54Speaker 15: that's called social contagion. Social contagion is a real thing.
- 38:58Speaker 15: We tend to do what the people are around us
- 39:00Speaker 15: are doing. If it becomes part of the local culture,
- 39:04Speaker 15: to not clean out the coffee cup in the office.
- 39:06Speaker 15: Then everybody leaves their dirty dishes.
- 39:08Speaker 5: It's as if you've been in our building.
- 39:11Speaker 15: I've been in the workplace for a long time. If
- 39:15Speaker 15: people around you read books or magazines, or sports features
- 39:20Speaker 15: or the sports page, then you are more likely to
- 39:24Speaker 15: pick those things up. So we tell parents and grandparents
- 39:28Speaker 15: and aunts and uncles who sometimes think. I know this.
- 39:32Speaker 15: As an adult around some kids, you sometimes think you
- 39:35Speaker 15: have no influence at all. Everything else gets the kids
- 39:38Speaker 15: attention and has an influence on them. But actually the
- 39:41Speaker 15: loving adults around them have more influence than it sometimes
- 39:44Speaker 15: feels like. And so if the adults around them bring
- 39:48Speaker 15: books into the environment, sports magazines, cookbooks, car books, anything
- 39:54Speaker 15: that interests your family, and you spend time with it,
- 39:57Speaker 15: you don't even You can start just looking at the
- 40:00Speaker 15: pictures and browsing. But if you make fifteen or twenty
- 40:04Speaker 15: minutes a day to read together, read aloud to kids,
- 40:08Speaker 15: or if you don't really enjoy that, you find somebody
- 40:10Speaker 15: in the family who does. At first, it might feel
- 40:14Speaker 15: strange if you haven't been doing it for a while,
- 40:16Speaker 15: but eventually, not very long, you'll hit something that everybody
- 40:20Speaker 15: enjoys and you won't want to stop after ten minutes,
- 40:23Speaker 15: or you won't want to stop after fifteen minutes, or
- 40:25Speaker 15: you'll look forward to it the next day. And those
- 40:27Speaker 15: little habits really add up over time.
- 40:31Speaker 5: You're doing great work there, don you and the organization

- 46:16Speaker 5: more than double what people are paying now, and it

- 46:22Speaker 5: for a conference. Of course, as always, they fumble things
- 46:24Speaker 5: up and screwed up our prepaid parking. I pulled a
- 46:27Speaker 5: Karen says the texture, and they let me through when
- 46:30Speaker 5: they realized there were eighty more people coming just like me.
- 46:33Speaker 5: I'm probably one of the few faithful shoppers left, and
- 46:35Speaker 5: I'm not going to the mall as much now. Honestly,
- 46:39Speaker 5: parking should be free to encourage more people to shop,
- 46:41Speaker 5: and no one really cares about what's happening to the mall,
- 46:44Speaker 5: and so that's kind of where that is. Yeah, I mean,
- 46:48Speaker 5: this thing is really suddenly. I'll say this. The Charlestontown

- 47:23Speaker 12: That's what I'm saying. Yeah, but I mean it's the
- 47:24Speaker 12: same garage. It's still connected as I mean, it's it's
- 47:28Speaker 12: I and I explained it. I talked to city officials
- 47:30Speaker 12: yesterday and I know Chris did a story on it,
- 47:32Speaker 12: and it's it's very complicated. How but one thing about
- 47:34Speaker 12: it is this is not on the city of Charleston.
- 47:36Speaker 12: Because people want to blame the city of Charles Cara.
- 47:38Speaker 5: This is not no, no, it's it's it's it's well
- 47:41Speaker 5: beyond that. Let me break it down for you a
- 47:43Speaker 5: little bit later, Okay, because I got all my notes
- 47:45Speaker 5: from yesterday. You're gonna ask me too quick here, let
- 47:48Speaker 5: me let me quickly try to If you don't want
- 47:50Speaker 5: to pay it don't work there, well, and there's plenty
- 47:53Speaker 5: of other parking spots around. Let me see. Sorry, you
- 47:57Speaker 5: know you're fine, Okay. Kira is completely out of it.
- 48:00Speaker 5: An entity created by the old bondholders bought the garages
- 48:04Speaker 5: at auction, so they own and operate the two garages
- 48:06Speaker 5: connected to the mall. The owner of the Marriotte owns
- 48:09Speaker 5: the garage beside that hotel, and Chris actually did an
- 48:13Speaker 5: interview and it Ara does this morning on the Morning
- 48:15Speaker 5: News with the people that are currently in charge of it.
- 48:17Speaker 5: On an unrelated note, why are so many people upset
- 48:21Speaker 5: about a new hotel being being born being built in
- 48:25Speaker 5: downtown Charleston. The plans were released a couple of days ago,
- 48:28Speaker 5: and what should have been tj a positive story becomes
- 48:30Speaker 5: negative with everyone commenting on their favorite social media about
- 48:34Speaker 5: how Charleston doesn't need another hotel and there's nothing going
- 48:38Speaker 5: on in Charleston. Tell me you don't know anything about
- 48:40Speaker 5: your community. Without telling me you don't know anything going
- 48:43Speaker 5: on in your community.
- 48:44Speaker 12: I mean it's private capital, right, the city's not building
- 48:47Speaker 12: the hotel, right.
- 48:48Speaker 5: But my point is is it becomes this thing is, well,
- 48:50Speaker 5: why does Charleston need another I'll tell you why. Because
- 48:53Speaker 5: they're sold out, That's why. Because you don't know, people
- 48:56Speaker 5: don't look beyond their front yard and realize that they
- 48:59Speaker 5: may not be interested in the stuff that's going on.
- 49:02Speaker 5: I know the people that own and operate the hotel
- 49:05Speaker 5: off the Tays Valley exit there to sleep in. Yeah,
- 49:07Speaker 5: completely sold out, completely sold out almost every weekend. And
- 49:10Speaker 5: it's because and that's because people can't get closer to
- 49:13Speaker 5: Charles Now. Granted, there are great things. I'm president of
- 49:16Speaker 5: Putnam County Tourism, so I can say that there are
- 49:18Speaker 5: great things going on in Putnam County as well. That
- 49:21Speaker 5: hotel was past weekend, was completely sold out, mainly because
- 49:24Speaker 5: of some things going on there, but also things going
- 49:27Speaker 5: on at Shawnee. We had the home show going on,
- 49:30Speaker 5: all these other things. So just miss me to quote
- 49:32Speaker 5: my favorite person, one of my favorite people, Pastor Marlon Collins,
- 49:35Speaker 5: miss me with all this, there's nothing going on in Charleston,
- 49:39Speaker 5: and we don't need another hotel. We absolutely need another hotel,
- 49:43Speaker 5: two or three hotels.
- 49:45Speaker 12: My view on it's even simpler than that. I don't
- 49:47Speaker 12: know the hotel business, but guys that are investing in hotels,
- 49:50Speaker 12: those are not cheap to build.
- 49:52Speaker 6: They typically do.
- 49:53Speaker 5: Their due diligence.
- 49:54Speaker 12: And if they want to put private capital at risk
- 49:56Speaker 12: and bring something into this, what do you want? You
- 49:58Speaker 12: want it to be a blank space? I to be empty?
- 50:01Speaker 12: Why is it bad?
- 50:02Speaker 5: Well, the people are saying we don't need another Yeah,
- 50:04Speaker 5: it's not their decision. But no, but and I agree
- 50:07Speaker 5: with you. You and I are pretty much lined up politically,
- 50:10Speaker 5: ninety nine percent of the till we are a Chamber
- 50:13Speaker 5: of Commerce country club. Republicans were called not welcome in
- 50:16Speaker 5: the party, by the way, by most Republicans who said
- 50:18Speaker 5: I wanted to go, well, I'm not a Republican anymore so,
- 50:22Speaker 5: but that's what this is the whole thing about, people
- 50:24Speaker 5: saying we don't need Hell, yes we need we need
- 50:27Speaker 5: two or three more hotels in Charleston and the surrounding areas.
- 50:31Speaker 5: But anyway, what's on the big show today, sir.
- 50:33Speaker 12: So coming out with ten oh six, We're going to
- 50:35Speaker 12: break down reaction to Laura Wakem Chapman. She's a Senator
- 50:39Speaker 12: from Ohio County. She had some strong words. Of course,
- 50:41Speaker 12: she tried to revive the vaccine exemption bill, ended up
- 50:44Speaker 12: pulling it yesterday. Remarks by members late last night, Dave,
- 50:47Speaker 12: and She's had some very you know, tough words for people,
- 50:51Speaker 12: different industries, different folks on why that fell apart. We
- 50:54Speaker 12: will play those and react. Coming up at ten thirty.
- 50:57Speaker 12: Chris Stirewalt stops by Hoppies in the House at eleven
- 51:00Speaker 12: oh six. Brad may Or may not join us, depending
- 51:03Speaker 12: on whether or not he's held hostage in one of
- 51:04Speaker 12: the houses of the Legislature this morning as they're both
- 51:07Speaker 12: gaveled in, and then of course everyone's favorites eleven thirty.
- 51:11Speaker 5: Steamerly, Steamerly.
- 51:12Speaker 12: I think it's going to be big, you think so
- 51:15Speaker 12: this week, And there's something in the last week of
- 51:17Speaker 12: the legislature. We've been a little more opinionated this week
- 51:20Speaker 12: than we otherwise.
- 51:21Speaker 5: Happens this is when it gets to a certain level,
- 51:22Speaker 5: and you know, this gets to a certain at this time,
- 51:25Speaker 5: people start looking around and saying what have we done?
- 51:28Speaker 5: And there, and the public as well as elected officials.
- 51:31Speaker 5: And I told somebody the other day, I said, it's
- 51:33Speaker 5: kind of hard at this time. Now you guys are
- 51:35Speaker 5: at the capitol, so that you've got them walking by.
- 51:36Speaker 5: But on shows like this and the shows similar to
- 51:38Speaker 5: this air in Morgantown and UH and Beckley and other places,
- 51:42Speaker 5: we have a hard time getting the elected officials on
- 51:44Speaker 5: the air at this time because they're busy and im
- 51:47Speaker 5: and I'm perfectly fine with that. But starting next I
- 51:49Speaker 5: promise you, over the weekend, my phone is going to
- 51:51Speaker 5: start ringing off the hook with these story legs to tell,
- 51:54Speaker 5: wanting to say, here's what I did, and here's why
- 51:57Speaker 5: I didn't get something done. That's what's gonna happen. It's
- 52:01Speaker 5: everybody's fault. But mind Dave, I was trying to do
- 52:03Speaker 5: my part.
- 52:04Speaker 2: But this guy and.
- 52:05Speaker 5: This gal, those those fill in name here, the leadership
- 52:09Speaker 5: or the party or whatever.
- 52:10Speaker 2: I predict.
- 52:10Speaker 13: We'll get a.
- 52:11Speaker 12: Scene today about you and I saying that Charleston is
- 52:13Speaker 12: over hoteled.
- 52:14Speaker 5: Bring it on, brought it on, bring it on, man,
- 52:16Speaker 5: bringing the I'll argue with anybody, and I got statistical
- 52:19Speaker 5: stuff that'll back it up. He got numbers, I got numbers, man.
- 52:23Speaker 5: Coming up on Monday's show again, we're going to talk
- 52:25Speaker 5: about the Maddox Foundation, also small business semi related in
- 52:29Speaker 5: Charleston with city councilor Emmitt Pepper and others on the show.
