- 0:00Speaker 1: It is alive, somehow skirting the depths of certain depth death. No,
- 0:10Speaker 1: it's not quite that dramatic. It's glad to be back today.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Feeling much better. Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the program
- 0:17Speaker 1: here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. My
- 0:20Speaker 1: name is Craig Way. I am feeling much better today,
- 0:22Speaker 1: Thank you, and thanks to Cameron Parker filling in for
- 0:25Speaker 1: me yesterday. It's been a bizarre last week and some
- 0:31Speaker 1: of the details, we'd kind of give it a few
- 0:33Speaker 1: of the details when I popped on with Andrew Zimmel
- 0:39Speaker 1: last week with the travel delays and all the weird
- 0:41Speaker 1: stuff that happened, and I'll kind of do a little
- 0:45Speaker 1: recap of it without going into grand.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Detail, but.
- 0:49Speaker 1: It led to a very very busy and hectic and
- 0:53Speaker 1: unplanned for series of travel, which happens a lot in
- 0:58Speaker 1: our business in the in the sports broadcaster business, especially
- 1:02Speaker 1: guys who do play by play, and then the unexpected
- 1:08Speaker 1: but always recognized moment of illness arrives as well, and
- 1:12Speaker 1: that happened over the weekend as well. But we did
- 1:15Speaker 1: manage to get through all of that. So here's kind
- 1:19Speaker 1: of what happened, very very very very very busy week
- 1:25Speaker 1: last week, as you might imagine, and there was you know,
- 1:31Speaker 1: basketball games to be broadcast, two men's games, two women's
- 1:35Speaker 1: games for you team, and and also we were planning
- 1:40Speaker 1: to do a long worn weekly show with Rodney Terry
- 1:42Speaker 1: on Thursday night at Pluckers. So Tuesday comes, So it
- 1:47Speaker 1: was a week ago today. It's kind of interesting thing
- 1:50Speaker 1: about all this stuff happened within less than a week time.
- 1:54Speaker 2: But Tuesday fly with the team along with Cameron.
- 1:58Speaker 1: We both fly with the men's basketball team over to Oxford, Mississippi.
- 2:04Speaker 1: The game takes place on Wednesday, hard faught basketball game.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Long ones come up on the short end of that
- 2:10Speaker 1: seventy two to sixty nine contest. The Trey Johnson three
- 2:15Speaker 1: pointer to try to tie it at the buzzer rattles out,
- 2:18Speaker 1: so they lose the game on Wednesday night before we
- 2:23Speaker 1: even got back to the hotel. Because normally when you're
- 2:27Speaker 1: on the road, the way the sequence works is you
- 2:31Speaker 1: go in the day before the team has it's it's
- 2:38Speaker 1: walked through there and it's film study there in the hotel.
- 2:42Speaker 1: There might be a shooting session the night before the
- 2:49Speaker 1: game in the arena. It depends on the host to
- 2:52Speaker 1: be quite honest, and also to be quite honest, Ole
- 2:56Speaker 1: miss was not going to relinquish the arena for Texas
- 2:59Speaker 1: to sh shoot until at least eight thirty at night.
- 3:04Speaker 2: And there was a plan.
- 3:08Speaker 1: For the basketball team that there was a team dinner
- 3:10Speaker 1: planned that night, so and that was at seven thirty,
- 3:14Speaker 1: and they didn't want to disrupt all the other plans
- 3:16Speaker 1: and the way things are on the itinery, so they
- 3:19Speaker 1: didn't shoot the night before the game. So they had
- 3:22Speaker 1: a big session inside this ballroom where they have the
- 3:26Speaker 1: free throw lane taped down and that's part of what
- 3:29Speaker 1: they do when they're working through a lot of half
- 3:31Speaker 1: court sequences and things like that. So they did that
- 3:37Speaker 1: and they had dinner on Tuesday night. Wednesday morning, they
- 3:40Speaker 1: get up, they go to shoot around and they had
- 3:45Speaker 1: the shoot around and then you when you come back
- 3:49Speaker 1: if a pregame meal later and then the team goes
- 3:51Speaker 1: to the arena, and when they go to the arena,
- 3:53Speaker 1: you pack up all your bags and you're done because
- 3:57Speaker 1: they're loaded onto the bus because it's going straight from
- 3:59Speaker 1: the arena to the airport to get on the charter flight.
- 4:03Speaker 1: And this case was going to be in Tupelo, Mississippi,
- 4:06Speaker 1: forty five minutes to the or really closer to an
- 4:09Speaker 1: hour to the east of Oxford. Oxford's a very small place.
- 4:14Speaker 1: The airport is just really small camp get most charter
- 4:17Speaker 1: jets in there. So long wards play the game, lose
- 4:21Speaker 1: the game, and instead of packing up and going straight
- 4:25Speaker 1: to the airport, we were all told, no, we're going
- 4:27Speaker 1: to go back to the hotel. We're not getting out
- 4:31Speaker 1: tonight due to the fog in Austin because of that
- 4:35Speaker 1: bad weather that moved through. I know, there was a
- 4:38Speaker 1: lot of rain and there's fog. So the team goes
- 4:40Speaker 1: back to the hotel. So we were all given keys
- 4:41Speaker 1: and got back into our dirty hotel rooms, the ones
- 4:44Speaker 1: that we had that the you know, the housekeeping staff
- 4:47Speaker 1: had not made up.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Wait, the rooms were paid for through that second full
- 4:51Speaker 1: day anyway, second night anyway. But the decision was also
- 4:57Speaker 1: made that night that the team was going to go
- 5:02Speaker 1: on straight to Baton Rouge on Thursday, because the next
- 5:05Speaker 1: game was going to be with LSU on Saturday, and
- 5:08Speaker 1: rather than come home on Thursday just for one day
- 5:13Speaker 1: and then turn around because the guys were gonna miss
- 5:15Speaker 1: class on Thursday anyway, they could do a study hall
- 5:17Speaker 1: by staying out and then turn around and go Friday LSU.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Rather than do that, they were just going to go
- 5:24Speaker 1: Thursday to bat Rouge. Well, that wasn't gonna work for
- 5:26Speaker 1: my schedule because obviously I needed to get back to
- 5:29Speaker 1: broadcast the Texas women's game. So I got an eighty
- 5:34Speaker 1: mile uber drive up to Memphis and hopped on board
- 5:39Speaker 1: a flight to come from Memphis back to Austin. Made
- 5:42Speaker 1: it back to the game Thursday night for the Texas
- 5:45Speaker 1: women against Missouri. Friday, I fly out to Baton Rouge.
- 5:48Speaker 1: The team had gone to Baton Rouge on Thursday. I
- 5:51Speaker 1: rejoined the team in Baton Rouge on Friday. They played
- 5:54Speaker 1: the game Saturday. I woke up Saturday morning it didn't
- 5:59Speaker 1: feel well, and I thought, well, maybe this is a
- 6:02Speaker 1: cold or something.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I don't know what it was.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I didn't feel well, and I also and I did
- 6:07Speaker 1: not know until I got in like late Friday night,
- 6:11Speaker 1: that Rodney Terry had been sick with the flu.
- 6:13Speaker 2: He'd been down for two days.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Really was it was a tough deal, but I had
- 6:16Speaker 1: not been around him, so it wasn't like I called
- 6:19Speaker 1: anything from him, And in retrospect, I don't think it
- 6:22Speaker 1: was the flu, although I wound up having some fevers
- 6:25Speaker 1: over the course of the next few days. So anyway,
- 6:28Speaker 1: I kind of medicated up and you know, cold medicines
- 6:32Speaker 1: and all that other kind of stuff and decongestions and
- 6:35Speaker 1: things of that nature. Called the game on Saturday always
- 6:39Speaker 1: helps him. The games going well too, you know, and
- 6:41Speaker 1: the long Words won. The game obviously, did very very well,
- 6:46Speaker 1: won by thirty one points, so that goes all right.
- 6:49Speaker 1: When the game was over, I started feeling it coming
- 6:51Speaker 1: on again. On the plane flight at home. I felt bad.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I got home. I almost went straight to bed immediately after,
- 6:59Speaker 1: medicated up again and slept through the night.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Did not feel good at all.
- 7:03Speaker 1: When I woke up Sunday morning and oncen't sure I
- 7:05Speaker 1: was going to be able to get over to College
- 7:06Speaker 1: Station and do the game. But again, some heavy meds
- 7:10Speaker 1: and the fact that it was just an hour forty
- 7:12Speaker 1: five minute drive over to College station able to get
- 7:14Speaker 1: over there and do the game. Did the game, you know, again,
- 7:21Speaker 1: heavily medicated did the ball game. Everything went fine. I
- 7:25Speaker 1: got home, and I felt awful when I got home.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Part of it also was it seemed to take me
- 7:30Speaker 1: forever to get home. Now I will stand up there
- 7:35Speaker 1: with just about anybody, just about anybody on the best
- 7:39Speaker 1: ways to drive from Austin to College Station. You know,
- 7:42Speaker 1: I've been there a few times so for football, men's basketball,
- 7:46Speaker 1: women's basketball, baseball. I've been over the College Station many, many, many,
- 7:49Speaker 1: many many times, so I know how to get to
- 7:51Speaker 1: College Station. But just for the heck of it, in
- 7:56Speaker 1: this day and age of having like Apple Car Play,
- 8:01Speaker 1: I'll input the disk just so I can see the
- 8:03Speaker 1: mileages I'm going across, and also more important to me
- 8:07Speaker 1: to see the speed limit in each area, just in
- 8:09Speaker 1: case I don't want to be going way beyond the
- 8:11Speaker 1: speed limit, and it puts it up there when you
- 8:13Speaker 1: got the destination one, well, the backside of that, the
- 8:18Speaker 1: other side of it. Sometimes GPS has a mind of
- 8:20Speaker 1: its own and it'll take you a direction you're not
- 8:23Speaker 1: really planning to go. And it told me to go
- 8:25Speaker 1: this different way coming back when I got to Rockdale
- 8:28Speaker 1: turning north instead of staying on seventy nine, I think
- 8:30Speaker 1: I was going up far In to Market nine oh eight,
- 8:33Speaker 1: and then then from far In to Market nine oh eight,
- 8:38Speaker 1: flipping back around to something like six three oh six'
- 8:43Speaker 1: one and anyway, it was on these foreigner market roads
- 8:45Speaker 1: that didn't recognize and at one point I was like,
- 8:48Speaker 1: where am I. I'm out in the middle of nowhere
- 8:52Speaker 1: and I get to where this one far in the
- 8:53Speaker 1: market road is dead ending, but the GBS is telling
- 8:56Speaker 1: me to turn left. So I kind of did a
- 8:58Speaker 1: slowed down and boom and a kind of rolled on
- 9:01Speaker 1: through on to the left.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I got pulled by a h I think it
- 9:07Speaker 1: was a Milam County Sheriff's deputy for rolling through the
- 9:13Speaker 1: stop sign out in the middle of nowhere with no
- 9:16Speaker 1: traffic getting about. I explained my situation to him and
- 9:19Speaker 1: he was he was pretty cool about that. I'm gonna
- 9:21Speaker 1: let you go with a warning, just kind of be
- 9:23Speaker 1: mindful of that. Blah blah blah. So he let me go,
- 9:26Speaker 1: but it just seemed to take forever to get home,
- 9:29Speaker 1: and by the time I got home, I felt absolutely awful,
- 9:33Speaker 1: really awful. And then I was up throughout the night
- 9:37Speaker 1: sleeping and then waking up and medicating all that stuff,
- 9:41Speaker 1: and I just felt terrible yesterday. So that's why I
- 9:44Speaker 1: wasn't able to make it in. But a day of
- 9:46Speaker 1: a lot of rest and a lot of medication and
- 9:50Speaker 1: back at it, not one hundred percent, but feeling a
- 9:52Speaker 1: lot better.
- 9:53Speaker 2: So that's that's a good thing, all right.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Coming up, So that's the explanation for the craziness of
- 9:58Speaker 1: the past several days. What's coming up the program today,
- 10:02Speaker 1: We're gonna hear from Rodney Terry, long worn men's basketball coach.
- 10:05Speaker 1: We're also here from Devon Pryor, who has started to
- 10:08Speaker 1: have his presence known a little bit more and he
- 10:11Speaker 1: is he is really affecting things also, so uh getting
- 10:16Speaker 1: more playing time. We're gonna hear from de ViOn Pryor,
- 10:18Speaker 1: but we'll hear from Rodney Terry coming up. We do
- 10:20Speaker 1: have inconceivable this hour. We've got a lot of things
- 10:23Speaker 1: to get to on the program. We're always happy to
- 10:25Speaker 1: take your input, your questions, your thoughts. All you have
- 10:28Speaker 1: to do is text the word Texas followed by your
- 10:32Speaker 1: question or comment to eight one five three zero. So
- 10:36Speaker 1: text the word Texas followed by your question or comment
- 10:39Speaker 1: to eight one five to three zero. Standard messaging and
- 10:42Speaker 1: data rates may apply. So we'll get to all of
- 10:44Speaker 1: that and more. We'll talk from Super Bowl as well.
- 10:47Speaker 2: NBA.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Yeah, the simmering still after the massive trade between the
- 10:52Speaker 1: Mavericks and the Lakers, with Luka Doncics going to la
- 10:55Speaker 1: and Anthony Davis coming.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Back to Dallas.
- 10:57Speaker 1: We get to all that and more when we continue
- 10:59Speaker 1: here on thirteen under the zone.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Tuesday's going all right, beautiful.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Weather outside, you know, I think it depends on your
- 11:07Speaker 1: perspective with regard to the weather. I mean, we can
- 11:09Speaker 1: all look outside and see that it's nice and sunny
- 11:11Speaker 1: and warm.
- 11:12Speaker 2: And all this kind of stuff.
- 11:13Speaker 1: But there are some people, some people, and they look
- 11:20Speaker 1: at this as being unseasonable to the point of being unfriendly.
- 11:27Speaker 1: I am married to one of those people. Linda likes those,
- 11:31Speaker 1: Don't get me wrong. She likes summertime weather and warm weather.
- 11:34Speaker 1: She just likes summertime. In the summertime. She would rather
- 11:37Speaker 1: it be, you know, more in the seasonal pattern of
- 11:42Speaker 1: being in the sixties this time of year.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Not in the low eighties.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Me I'll take hot any time of year over the
- 11:48Speaker 1: cold anytime of year. But you know, sometimes that just happens.
- 11:52Speaker 2: All right.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Long worn basketball team has won three of its last four.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Texas is now with one win way for getting back
- 12:00Speaker 1: to the five hundred market conference play. That's really important
- 12:05Speaker 1: when considering the fact that they play in the toughest
- 12:09Speaker 1: basketball conference in the country.
- 12:11Speaker 2: That's not a pinion, that's fact.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Based on the numbers, based on the net rankings, based
- 12:16Speaker 1: on any metric you choose, the Southeastern Conference has been
- 12:20Speaker 1: the top basketball conference in the nation. And if you
- 12:23Speaker 1: look at the regular poll rankings as well as the
- 12:26Speaker 1: net rankings and the computer and all that kind of stuff,
- 12:29Speaker 1: all of that is revealed as such. So a win
- 12:33Speaker 1: over Arkansas on Wednesday night would be big. It would
- 12:37Speaker 1: really help out tex As to get him back to
- 12:39Speaker 1: level five hundred. It would get them to at that point,
- 12:44Speaker 1: another win in conference play, and another win overall. All
- 12:47Speaker 1: of those things important as they try to continue to
- 12:50Speaker 1: stay away from the bubble and climb further up on that.
- 12:54Speaker 1: So at his media zoom yesterday, Long Worn's head coach
- 12:59Speaker 1: Rodney Terry, because the team of late has been shooting
- 13:03Speaker 1: the ball better, defending better, are they playing their best
- 13:06Speaker 1: basketball the season right now?
- 13:08Speaker 3: I thought we played really well.
- 13:10Speaker 4: Uh at Old Miss, I thought we uh we we
- 13:13Speaker 4: did everything except win the game, you know, and uh
- 13:17Speaker 4: you know, I thought I guys played with great effort,
- 13:19Speaker 4: uh played really good deepense. I thought we shared the
- 13:22Speaker 4: ball really well, you know, it came down to you know,
- 13:26Speaker 4: you know, whether basketball goes in the basket or not. Uh,
- 13:29Speaker 4: you know, at the end of the ball game. But
- 13:31Speaker 4: you know, disappointed lost for us. You know, we come
- 13:34Speaker 4: on the heels of travel where we have to spend
- 13:38Speaker 4: the night and stay and uh. Uh we made the
- 13:41Speaker 4: decision to stay out the whole time instead of coming back.
- 13:44Speaker 4: And I said that guys that night. You know, we're
- 13:47Speaker 4: gonna find a civil lining uh in this whole situation.
- 13:50Speaker 4: We're all disappointed obviously with the outcome of what we're
- 13:52Speaker 4: transpired tonight, but we're gonna we're gonna find a positive
- 13:55Speaker 4: in this.
- 13:55Speaker 3: We're gonna stay together.
- 13:57Speaker 4: We're gonna we're gonna we're gonna get over and and
- 13:59Speaker 4: start our preparation for an LSU team that at home
- 14:03Speaker 4: that's played everyone really close in league play.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Uh.
- 14:07Speaker 4: You know, it's not gonna be easy. Uh, we're gonna
- 14:10Speaker 4: stay on top of our academics. But but we're gonna
- 14:13Speaker 4: stay together. And I thought our guys really came together
- 14:16Speaker 4: over the course of that trip in terms of just
- 14:18Speaker 4: being around one another.
- 14:20Speaker 3: This team's playing.
- 14:21Speaker 4: A lot, a lot more selfless right now at this point.
- 14:25Speaker 4: In terms of really trusting the teammates. You know, when
- 14:28Speaker 4: anytime you have twenty plus assists in the game, you know,
- 14:32Speaker 4: guys are trusting the teammates at a high level. Did
- 14:34Speaker 4: a good job of taking care of the basketball as well.
- 14:37Speaker 4: We had six turn seven turnovers in the games, one
- 14:40Speaker 4: being mine.
- 14:40Speaker 3: At the end of the game, we had six.
- 14:42Speaker 5: Uh.
- 14:43Speaker 3: But uh, but but they're they are, they're they're they're.
- 14:46Speaker 4: Really kind of understanding and getting the field for what
- 14:48Speaker 4: it takes to try to win in this league. You know,
- 14:50Speaker 4: you've got to play really good defense every night. Well,
- 14:52Speaker 4: you play really hard. You don't have to play perfect,
- 14:55Speaker 4: but you got to play really hard and try to
- 14:56Speaker 4: have each other's back and uh, and then you got
- 14:59Speaker 4: to a rebound the basketball at a at a high
- 15:02Speaker 4: clip as well. And then and then share the basketball,
- 15:05Speaker 4: move the basketball, have good movement and play with good pace.
- 15:10Speaker 4: But I think that's that's what we're doing right now.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know you heard me telling me about,
- 15:15Speaker 1: you know whatever, my travel log and getting back and
- 15:18Speaker 1: forth and all that stuff. It wasn't easy for the
- 15:19Speaker 1: team as well, because you know, they had to stay overnight,
- 15:22Speaker 1: like I said, didn't get back. They probably did not
- 15:25Speaker 1: get back in the bed. Remember that was an eight
- 15:26Speaker 1: o'clock tip. And by the time they got back to
- 15:31Speaker 1: the hotel and they got some food in them and
- 15:32Speaker 1: all that sort of stuff, it was probably close to
- 15:35Speaker 1: one o'clock in the morning before they got the bed,
- 15:37Speaker 1: and then they had to get up in the morning, repack,
- 15:39Speaker 1: go over it, then get on the bus.
- 15:43Speaker 2: And they had close to an.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Hour bus ride over to Tupelo, where the charter plane
- 15:47Speaker 1: then took them the batteries. Then they had an afternoon
- 15:49Speaker 1: study haul. They did that since they were going to
- 15:52Speaker 1: miss the academic portion of the calendar week coming back
- 15:55Speaker 1: to Austin. So they did that and and came back
- 16:00Speaker 1: and or went to Baton Rouge after that, and then
- 16:04Speaker 1: after going over to Baton Rouge, then they were able
- 16:08Speaker 1: to get the work in. And you heard Ronnie talk
- 16:09Speaker 1: about them playing very unselfishly. Normally, when that happens, it's
- 16:15Speaker 1: because the chemistry is working. And and Ronnie was asked
- 16:20Speaker 1: if there was a moment when this team chemistry is
- 16:24Speaker 1: really just clicking for this group, Well, I think.
- 16:26Speaker 4: It's always a work in progress. I mean, and you know, again,
- 16:30Speaker 4: it takes sometimes it takes teams a while last year
- 16:33Speaker 4: it took us you know, Mike Conference before we were
- 16:35Speaker 4: really playing really well officuely and defensively. And you know, again,
- 16:39Speaker 4: you know, it just takes time, especially in this new
- 16:42Speaker 4: era in terms of you know, one year rosters, you know,
- 16:46Speaker 4: and years past you probably can say if you had
- 16:48Speaker 4: retention of guys for two or three years, you probably
- 16:51Speaker 4: had a well all machine that knew what you were
- 16:53Speaker 4: trying to get done, especially in big moments of games
- 16:56Speaker 4: where you've got to really you know, now you've got to.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Really execute on offense.
- 16:59Speaker 4: You've got to really sit down and lock into the
- 17:02Speaker 4: details on defense and know exactly what you're trying to
- 17:04Speaker 4: get done from a scheme standpoint. You know, that's always
- 17:07Speaker 4: a work in progress right now with with with the
- 17:10Speaker 4: team that that comes together in one year and stuff.
- 17:13Speaker 3: So I think we'll get into a really good.
- 17:14Speaker 4: Point that I think guys will really locking in on
- 17:16Speaker 4: details right now. Knowing personnel at a high level on
- 17:21Speaker 4: the defensive side of the ball, Uh, they're they're able
- 17:24Speaker 4: to make some adjustments during games. That's one thing you
- 17:27Speaker 4: take take for granted a little bit in terms of
- 17:30Speaker 4: when you don't have connuities teams that can make adjustments.
- 17:33Speaker 4: You may go into a game thinking you can do
- 17:35Speaker 4: this or do that, and now in the game, in game.
- 17:38Speaker 3: In adjustments that you have to make.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Your team has to continue to get better as the
- 17:43Speaker 4: season goes along. How to adapt to adjusting games. Maybe
- 17:47Speaker 4: it's how the game's being officiated. Maybe it's how we
- 17:50Speaker 4: need to change our pick and roll coverage. Maybe it's
- 17:53Speaker 4: you know, it's personnel, how we're gonna go on a
- 17:56Speaker 4: guy differently. Maybe it's how we're gonna attack person Uh
- 17:59Speaker 4: their so now how we're gonna attack their their pick
- 18:02Speaker 4: and roll. But just the nuances of the game and
- 18:05Speaker 4: the adjustments within the game, you know, that's where guys
- 18:10Speaker 4: have to get familiar with each other, trust one another,
- 18:13Speaker 4: and and know that if it's on the defensive side,
- 18:16Speaker 4: guy's gonna have my back if I make a mistake.
- 18:18Speaker 4: It's on on the offensive side. Hey, if we run
- 18:21Speaker 4: a play, we don't square out of the plate. Now
- 18:23Speaker 4: we gotta flow and play out of the plate, uh
- 18:27Speaker 4: and get a good.
- 18:27Speaker 3: Shot every time down.
- 18:28Speaker 4: So hopefully that that kind of answers your question along
- 18:32Speaker 4: roundabout way that first part of it.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Okay, it doesn't.
- 18:35Speaker 5: Just a second quick follow up, J Billis said the
- 18:38Speaker 5: other day that playing in the SEC and having success
- 18:40Speaker 5: is harder than win the NCAA tournament this year.
- 18:42Speaker 6: Just crrius your thought on this concept.
- 18:45Speaker 3: You know what this leads the bear man.
- 18:47Speaker 4: It is a bear you know every league you know,
- 18:51Speaker 4: in conference play, you know, are difficult games to play,
- 18:56Speaker 4: no matter what league you play in. Uh, I just
- 18:59Speaker 4: thinking I'll league this year. You know, we have exceptional teams,
- 19:04Speaker 4: exceptional coaches, and really hard venues to play in. You know,
- 19:09Speaker 4: and it's a really physical league. You know, teams are
- 19:14Speaker 4: really physical, they're athletic, they don't just they don't give
- 19:16Speaker 4: you any really good looks.
- 19:18Speaker 3: A lot of really.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Good defensive teams in this league, a lot of physical
- 19:22Speaker 4: teams that rebound the basketball in this league. When you
- 19:25Speaker 4: come out of a game in the SEC, you feel
- 19:28Speaker 4: it as a coach, you feel it as a player.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess you do.
- 19:35Speaker 1: You know the impression that I've gotten from the SEC,
- 19:37Speaker 1: it's a mentally tough league. There's a lot of mentally
- 19:40Speaker 1: tough guys in this league, just hard nosed guys as
- 19:44Speaker 1: well as how physical and what a grind it can
- 19:47Speaker 1: be in this league. So that brings us to this
- 19:50Speaker 1: Wednesday game with Arkansas Razorbacks were kind of bumbling and
- 19:54Speaker 1: stumbling along. There were one in six in conference play,
- 19:58Speaker 1: first year under John calipar and uh, you know, struggling
- 20:02Speaker 1: to adapt and adjust everything, even with his Kentucky uh
- 20:06Speaker 1: transfer in, you know, influx into the roster.
- 20:11Speaker 2: It just didn't really seem to be clicking very well.
- 20:13Speaker 1: And then came Saturday night when the Razorbacks went into Lexington,
- 20:18Speaker 1: Kentucky John Caliparni's return, and they went about the business
- 20:23Speaker 1: of beating Kentucky and they didn't mess around.
- 20:25Speaker 2: They ended up winning it by ten, but led by
- 20:27Speaker 2: more than that. Uh.
- 20:28Speaker 1: It was eye opening to see that happen. And it
- 20:31Speaker 1: also lets you know that this Arkansas team does have
- 20:35Speaker 1: a lot of talent and they maybe they're figuring things
- 20:38Speaker 1: out a little bit. And then of course there's that
- 20:40Speaker 1: business with the rivalry. And Rodney Terry was asked about,
- 20:44Speaker 1: you know, the rebirth of the rivalry. We heard start
- 20:47Speaker 1: talk about it with football. I think it'll happen with baseball.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Uh and with basketball. Isn't a good thing for Texas
- 20:55Speaker 1: and college basketball to have yet another big rivalry back
- 20:57Speaker 1: on the boards for Texas, this time with Arkansas.
- 21:00Speaker 4: I think the thing that I'm really trying to reiterate
- 21:02Speaker 4: to our guys right now, a lot of those guys
- 21:05Speaker 4: weren't born during this time right now, so they don't
- 21:07Speaker 4: have a recollection of how how big a rivalry Arkansas
- 21:11Speaker 4: Texas is. I mean, you go back to Southwest Conference days,
- 21:14Speaker 4: and you know, for us from a basketball standpoint, you
- 21:17Speaker 4: had Nolan Richardson having those great teams that he had
- 21:20Speaker 4: in the early nineties, and then you talk about Tom
- 21:23Speaker 4: Penders revitalizing Texas basketball. I mean, you had two of
- 21:26Speaker 4: those things happening at the same time, and those were
- 21:30Speaker 4: big time games. I remember watching those games and seeing
- 21:33Speaker 4: those games, uh you know, on TV, and that that
- 21:38Speaker 4: the rival with Arkansas is is huge, you know. And
- 21:42Speaker 4: you know, again, we need a very difficult place to
- 21:44Speaker 4: play in come Wednesday night. We need Moody to be
- 21:47Speaker 4: rocking at another level because we know we go to
- 21:50Speaker 4: Fairville and be sold out over in Fort Fairville when
- 21:53Speaker 4: the Horns come to town.
- 21:54Speaker 3: You know. But it's that.
- 21:55Speaker 4: Big a rival it's a big deal, and it's a
- 21:58Speaker 4: great rivalry in college Afteret have a our two institutions
- 22:02Speaker 4: competing again at a very high level. A lot of
- 22:04Speaker 4: respect for coach cal Hall of Fame coach, A lot
- 22:08Speaker 4: of respect for Arkansas basketball.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Yeah, and this is one of those three along with
- 22:13Speaker 1: Texas A and M and also with Oklahoma to where
- 22:17Speaker 1: there's a home and home involved with that. It isn't
- 22:20Speaker 1: like that with the others, but it is in the
- 22:22Speaker 1: case of Arkansas. So it's Wednesday night, Tomorrow night at
- 22:26Speaker 1: eight o'clock, and our coverage begins at seven point thirty
- 22:29Speaker 1: here on the Zone as well as on ninety eight
- 22:31Speaker 1: point one FM KVED, our number two of the program
- 22:34Speaker 1: here on thirteen hundred the Zone. Glad to have you
- 22:36Speaker 1: with us as we continue here on this Tuesday afternoon,
- 22:40Speaker 1: beautiful Tuesday afternoon.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Hope you're feeling all right.
- 22:43Speaker 1: I'm feeling better after being out yesterday, sick with fevers
- 22:49Speaker 1: and coughing and all kinds of unhealthy things, but much better.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Definitely feeling much better today. I hadn't had a chance,
- 23:00Speaker 1: really to weigh in too much on that massive trade
- 23:05Speaker 1: that happened late Saturday night between the Mavericks and the
- 23:10Speaker 1: Los Angeles Lakers, and it was an interesting piece written
- 23:15Speaker 1: on the ESPN about how Luka Doncics was just about
- 23:19Speaker 1: to fall asleep when his phone rang or buzzed, and
- 23:25Speaker 1: that's when he found out that the Mavericks had traded
- 23:27Speaker 1: him to the Lakers. He said at a news conference today.
- 23:31Speaker 1: You can imagine how surprised I was. I had to
- 23:34Speaker 1: check if it was April first. I didn't really believe it,
- 23:38Speaker 1: And he says now he's kind of recovered from the shock.
- 23:43Speaker 1: He's growing increasingly excited about a new chapter with Lebron
- 23:46Speaker 1: James and playing with the famous Laker team on the
- 23:50Speaker 1: West Coast. And you know, his teammates, both with Dallas
- 23:57Speaker 1: and the ones he's going to play with, have said
- 24:00Speaker 1: it's been their impression he's never lacked motivation to be great,
- 24:03Speaker 1: but now he has even more fuel after the Mavericks
- 24:07Speaker 1: apparently apparently inherently questioned his talent and determination, or at
- 24:12Speaker 1: least his determination and his commitment to keeping himself in
- 24:18Speaker 1: better condition and things of that nature. He said, and
- 24:21Speaker 1: here was the quote. It was a big shock. Dallas
- 24:23Speaker 1: was home, so it was really hard moments for me.
- 24:25Speaker 1: But now I'll get to play in the greatest club
- 24:27Speaker 1: in the world, and I'm excited for this new journey.
- 24:31Speaker 1: I would say I always take the high road I
- 24:34Speaker 1: had my amazing moments in Dallas with all my teammates, coaches,
- 24:37Speaker 1: and most importantly the fans. They always supported me, and
- 24:40Speaker 1: it was an amazing journey. So that was the deal
- 24:44Speaker 1: where they traded Anthony Davis and Max Christie in that
- 24:47Speaker 1: three team deal.
- 24:51Speaker 2: For Luca.
- 24:52Speaker 1: And he said he was still processing all of this,
- 24:57Speaker 1: said quote, Honestly, it was hard at first. First, DA
- 25:00Speaker 1: really hard. Felt like these last forty eight hours was
- 25:02Speaker 1: a month emotionally, he was really hard. But to day
- 25:05Speaker 1: was much better. This is the Lakers, It's one of
- 25:07Speaker 1: the best clubs in history. So I'm excited to be here. So,
- 25:11Speaker 1: had he stayed in Dallas, he was eligible for a
- 25:13Speaker 1: five year, three hundred and forty five million dollars Supermax deal.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Now he's not eligible for that deal. And so when
- 25:20Speaker 1: he was asked if he or his representatives and indicated
- 25:23Speaker 1: to the Mavericks that he wouldn't sign a supermax extension
- 25:26Speaker 1: to remain in Dallas, he said he had not said that,
- 25:28Speaker 1: Absolutely not, he said. Lakers general manager Rob Polinka was
- 25:33Speaker 1: pretty excited about the whole deal. He said, I think
- 25:35Speaker 1: Luka Doncis joining forces with the Lakers is a seismic
- 25:38Speaker 1: event in NBA history. We have a twenty five year
- 25:41Speaker 1: old global superstar that's going to get on the stage
- 25:43Speaker 1: of the most popular and influential basketball brand on the globe.
- 25:47Speaker 2: And I think when those two.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Powerful forces get together, it brings basketball joint to the
- 25:51Speaker 1: world because that's how Luca plays.
- 25:53Speaker 2: He plays with Joy. Okay, so there was that.
- 26:00Speaker 1: The Lakers themselves say they're all excited about it. What
- 26:06Speaker 1: about on the other side, Anthony Davis the unibrow now
- 26:13Speaker 1: in a Mavericks uniform. Okay, I mentioned that Luca was
- 26:17Speaker 1: almost asleep when his phone rang. When that happened, Anthony
- 26:22Speaker 1: Davis was sitting down for a movie night with his wife.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Now remember that's two hours prior, so it might be
- 26:29Speaker 1: getting to the later hours of the evening on Saturday night,
- 26:31Speaker 1: but still in primetime.
- 26:32Speaker 2: It wasn't late night when his phone rang.
- 26:36Speaker 1: And it was a group call from Rob Polinka, the
- 26:40Speaker 1: GM and the coach JJ Reddick. And what he heard
- 26:43Speaker 1: of that conversation, he was being traded to the Mavericks
- 26:46Speaker 1: for Luka Doncic stunned him as much as it did
- 26:49Speaker 1: the rest of the world.
- 26:50Speaker 2: When it was announce lad he said, I was shocked.
- 26:53Speaker 2: I had no idea.
- 26:55Speaker 1: I just sent a team of text about congratulations on
- 26:57Speaker 1: the win against the Knicks, big win, looking forward to
- 27:00Speaker 1: Tuesday's game against the Clippers as far as standing purposes,
- 27:04Speaker 1: and then found out like an hour later, I was
- 27:05Speaker 1: no longer with a team. Was in shock. Obviously had
- 27:08Speaker 1: no idea that it was happening. But I mean now
- 27:10Speaker 1: I'm kind of over it. I'm just kind of getting
- 27:13Speaker 1: ready to play with Dallas. He's not going to play tonight.
- 27:16Speaker 1: The Mavericks do play the Sixers tonight. He still has
- 27:19Speaker 1: that abdominal strain that he suffered coincidentally a week ago
- 27:23Speaker 1: against the Sixers, and that would turn out to be
- 27:25Speaker 1: the final game that he.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Played with the Lakers.
- 27:27Speaker 1: He had gone back to LA to get the injury
- 27:29Speaker 1: examined entreated, and he said that he could play, possibly
- 27:37Speaker 1: play either Thursday in Boston and the Celtics or at
- 27:40Speaker 1: home Saturday against the Rockets. He said, I'll go through
- 27:42Speaker 1: a workout today and see how I feel, and depending
- 27:44Speaker 1: on that, get another one in tomorrow. Depending on that,
- 27:48Speaker 1: we'll see how I feel. If not Thursday, more than
- 27:50Speaker 1: likely Saturday at home. Okay, So that's from the principles
- 27:54Speaker 1: involved with that. You know, if you followed what has
- 28:02Speaker 1: happened with the fan reaction on social media, Laker fans
- 28:08Speaker 1: by and large are pretty excited about the thing. They're
- 28:11Speaker 1: not much down on the straight and Maverick fans would say, well,
- 28:14Speaker 1: they shouldn't be. Maverick fans have used words as betrayal
- 28:20Speaker 1: and sold out and this and that and just just
- 28:24Speaker 1: absolutely furious. There was a demonstration out front of the
- 28:28Speaker 1: American Airlines Center and Maverick's offices. There were a lot
- 28:32Speaker 1: of people very upset about this, saying it I'm done,
- 28:39Speaker 1: I'm not watching anymore. Take away the m f f
- 28:43Speaker 1: L Moniker, Maverick MAVs fan for life. Those who know,
- 28:48Speaker 1: you know, very upset. A lot of fans very upset
- 28:52Speaker 1: about this. The simple truth on this deal is, no
- 28:57Speaker 1: matter what has kind of seen through the cracks a
- 29:02Speaker 1: little bit and finding out a little bit some of
- 29:04Speaker 1: the details that slipped out that Maverick's front office people
- 29:10Speaker 1: were disenchanted with Luca's less than one hundred percent commitment
- 29:23Speaker 1: to complete workout in staying in shape in the off season.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Diet had something to do with it, but mainly his
- 29:33Speaker 1: his workout regimen. There were things like that. I made
- 29:37Speaker 1: the joke just a little over a week ago that
- 29:39Speaker 1: you know, Luca's having to deal with these calf strains.
- 29:42Speaker 1: I said, because the dude has cankles. You know, he's
- 29:45Speaker 1: got those calves to go right into his ankles. It's
- 29:47Speaker 1: all just like one, you know, one piece a cankle. Uh,
- 29:53Speaker 1: and makes it easier to get those to get those
- 29:57Speaker 1: kind of calf strains on that. But Mavericks executives, apparently
- 30:04Speaker 1: we're not happy with what was going to Let let's
- 30:06Speaker 1: also be real about this. I just read the thing
- 30:09Speaker 1: about the superback steal coming up. Had he stayed with
- 30:12Speaker 1: the ball club, he would have got a three hundred
- 30:13Speaker 1: and forty five million dollars superbacksteal. Now the Mavericks can
- 30:19Speaker 1: divest themselves of that, they can turn right back around
- 30:23Speaker 1: and say, no, we can uh better invest in the future.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Not only with the deal they made with the Lakers
- 30:36Speaker 1: in bringing bringing on Anthony Davis and Max Christie. Not
- 30:42Speaker 1: only that, but also the fact that they could turn
- 30:46Speaker 1: right around and make another deal. And reports are they
- 30:51Speaker 1: made a trade today picking up Caleb Martin from the
- 30:56Speaker 1: seventy six ers.
- 30:56Speaker 2: And that's where they are to play tonight.
- 30:59Speaker 1: So it's kind of like that baseball thing you ever heard,
- 31:01Speaker 1: the deal where guys get traded from one team to
- 31:03Speaker 1: another and the two teams happen to be playing each other.
- 31:08Speaker 1: So the guy takes his equipment from one dugout one
- 31:12Speaker 1: clubhouse across the field into the dugout and into the
- 31:15Speaker 1: clubhouse of the other teams, the visiting team or whatever,
- 31:18Speaker 1: or the visitor to the home team if he's been traded.
- 31:21Speaker 1: It's kind of the situation today with what the Mavericks
- 31:25Speaker 1: have done with the Sixers. So this actually started, it
- 31:31Speaker 1: really started percolating yesterday.
- 31:37Speaker 2: And then added on into it today.
- 31:40Speaker 1: So multiple reports say the Mavericks get Caleb Martin from Philadelphia,
- 31:44Speaker 1: their swing man, in exchange for Quinton Grimes and a
- 31:48Speaker 1: twenty twenty five second round pick. So that gives the
- 31:52Speaker 1: Mavericks a little more perimeter depth after the deal that
- 31:56Speaker 1: set Luca to the Lakers. So Kayla Martin is going
- 32:01Speaker 1: to the Mavericks. He had a four year deal with
- 32:04Speaker 1: the Sixers that he signed this past summer as part
- 32:07Speaker 1: of Philadelphia revamping around Joel mb Tyrese Maxie and Paul
- 32:12Speaker 1: George Martin. Average eight and a half points over five
- 32:15Speaker 1: seasons entering this season, and he's averaged ten points per
- 32:20Speaker 1: game and shot thirty five percent from three point range.
- 32:26Speaker 1: That was when he was in Miami. This year, he's
- 32:28Speaker 1: averaging a little over nine points per game four and
- 32:31Speaker 1: aff rebounds to assist. But of course the Sixers are
- 32:35Speaker 1: ten below five hundred. So Martin is going to join
- 32:40Speaker 1: a Mavericks team that includes Davis and Max Christi, along
- 32:43Speaker 1: with PJ.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Washington and A. G. Marshall. So there you have it.
- 32:49Speaker 1: The Mavericks looking at this from a pragmatic financial perspective
- 32:55Speaker 1: as well.
- 32:55Speaker 2: So yeah, it's an.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Emotional thing and Mavericks fans are really upset about it, understandably.
- 33:03Speaker 1: So as a Rams fan, I'm getting nervous sying all
- 33:07Speaker 1: this stuff on the bottom of the crawl of the
- 33:09Speaker 1: screen saying that Cooper Cup is saying the Rams are
- 33:12Speaker 1: trying to trade him or whatever, and they might. It's unfortunately,
- 33:15Speaker 1: but it's you know, if you're a fan of a
- 33:18Speaker 1: team and you invest your emotion and your fan capital
- 33:23Speaker 1: sometimes your financial capitol if you're buying jerseys or whatever
- 33:27Speaker 1: into a player, and then that player winds up leaving
- 33:32Speaker 1: the team either through free agency or being traded. Yeah,
- 33:35Speaker 1: there's going to be a feeling of, you know, forlornness,
- 33:39Speaker 1: if not betrayal or whatever, depending on the circumstances of
- 33:43Speaker 1: what caused the player to leave. All right, we're gonna
- 33:47Speaker 1: hear more from Longhorn's head basketball coach, Rodney Terry coming
- 33:50Speaker 1: up next when we continue on thirteen under the Zone
- 33:53Speaker 1: rolling through on a Tuesday afternoon. Glad to have you
- 33:55Speaker 1: with us here on the program on thirteen hundred the
- 33:59Speaker 1: Zone here on this Tuesday afternoon. Of course, Long Worn
- 34:03Speaker 1: Basketball is tomorrow. Tomorrow night, they resume with home game
- 34:07Speaker 1: and they will be taking on the Arkansas Razorbacks at
- 34:12Speaker 1: Moody Center. It's an eight o'clock tip and hope to
- 34:14Speaker 1: see you out there at Moody for the contest and
- 34:20Speaker 1: our airtime here on the Zone. And it will also
- 34:23Speaker 1: be on ninety eight point one FMKVED will come your
- 34:26Speaker 1: way seven point thirty the tip off at eight o'clock.
- 34:29Speaker 1: All right, we heard some from Rodney Terry last hour,
- 34:33Speaker 1: and I wanted to hear some more from the Long
- 34:35Speaker 1: WARN's head coach as they start to get ready for
- 34:41Speaker 1: this matchup. And as I mentioned, Arkansas is coming off
- 34:47Speaker 1: beating Kentucky that was a huge win for the Razorbacks
- 34:51Speaker 1: and trying to pick themselves up off the deck and
- 34:54Speaker 1: just try to get their season turned back around. Never
- 34:56Speaker 1: mind anything about postseason stuff right now because they would
- 34:59Speaker 1: kind of be off the grid on that. They probably
- 35:01Speaker 1: need two or three more wins just to even get
- 35:02Speaker 1: seriously consideration for the nit But that was a big win,
- 35:07Speaker 1: a signature win. And Rodney Terry has known coach John
- 35:12Speaker 1: Calipari for a lot of years, going back to his
- 35:15Speaker 1: time when when Rodney was assistant for Rick Barnes, Texas
- 35:19Speaker 1: played Memphis when Memphis had Derek Rose back in the
- 35:22Speaker 1: Elite eight in two thousand and eight. So they've gone
- 35:26Speaker 1: back away. So the question for our t is has
- 35:29Speaker 1: he crossed paths with coach call of late?
- 35:32Speaker 4: You know we have And the one thing I'll say
- 35:35Speaker 4: about coach call is Coach cal has always been great
- 35:38Speaker 4: to me, you know, and even when I was working
- 35:40Speaker 4: with coach Barnes as an assistant, he was always great
- 35:43Speaker 4: to me. And we got a chance to have a
- 35:45Speaker 4: four year series where we played Memphis every year. We
- 35:49Speaker 4: also have a connection I coached at UNC Wilmington.
- 35:52Speaker 3: He was at one time.
- 35:54Speaker 4: You know, I think he played a little bit there
- 35:56Speaker 4: was there, spent some time there in Wilmington. But he
- 35:59Speaker 4: and my former uh a mentor of mine, uh, Coach Wainwright. Uh,
- 36:04Speaker 4: those guys are really closing, you know. Coach would always
- 36:06Speaker 4: go and work Cale's camps and stuff as well. But
- 36:09Speaker 4: that Wilmington connection was a connection as well. And you know,
- 36:13Speaker 4: I think in coaching we have a brotherhood, you know,
- 36:15Speaker 4: and uh, we all look out for each other. And
- 36:18Speaker 4: I know he had a lot of respect for for
- 36:20Speaker 4: myself and my relationship with with you know, the people
- 36:24Speaker 4: that I've had a chance to work with and uh
- 36:27Speaker 4: and call my mentors.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Yeah, and as a person who actually actually attended the
- 36:35Speaker 1: University of North Carolina and Wilmington for all of one semester,
- 36:38Speaker 1: my freshman fall semester before I moved out to Texas,
- 36:40Speaker 1: that makes me smile.
- 36:41Speaker 2: You n c w youu and see by the.
- 36:43Speaker 1: Sea home of the Seahawks there, And I knew Roddy
- 36:46Speaker 1: of course, had been an assistant there and coach Cayle
- 36:48Speaker 1: had gone there, as he mentioned briefly, all right.
- 36:51Speaker 6: Uh.
- 36:51Speaker 1: He was also asked about the improvement with their offense
- 36:56Speaker 1: mainly the rhythm and how the point production has gone up.
- 36:59Speaker 1: There's been more flow within the offensive rhythm. What has
- 37:03Speaker 1: been the reasoning for that?
- 37:04Speaker 4: You know what we tried to get. You know, we
- 37:06Speaker 4: talk about it all the time. You always want to
- 37:08Speaker 4: try to have really good pace. You want good pace,
- 37:11Speaker 4: good movement, good ball movement, player movement. You know, you
- 37:15Speaker 4: don't want to be you know, you don't want guys
- 37:17Speaker 4: standing around. I think our guys have really gotten to
- 37:19Speaker 4: a point now where you know, let the next guy play.
- 37:22Speaker 4: But we're playing a lot of really good defenses right now.
- 37:24Speaker 4: We're gonna play a really good defensive team come Wednesday night.
- 37:27Speaker 4: I mean they're athletic, they're in the gap, you know,
- 37:30Speaker 4: and uh, they're gonna make.
- 37:32Speaker 3: It really difficult for us.
- 37:33Speaker 4: Uh, you know, they try to take you out of
- 37:35Speaker 4: your offenses, not let you initiate your offense, run your
- 37:38Speaker 4: all drible handoffs. I mean, you know, teams do a good,
- 37:41Speaker 4: really good job in this league. That's one thing that
- 37:44Speaker 4: people don't talk a lot about in terms of just
- 37:47Speaker 4: you know, it's a physical league, but it's a really
- 37:49Speaker 4: good defensive league. Almost every team we play to this
- 37:51Speaker 4: point right now, no one team hasn't had a really
- 37:54Speaker 4: good defense where they sit down and guart you really hard,
- 37:56Speaker 4: so it's challenged us offensively. They spend a lot of
- 37:59Speaker 4: time working on creating opportunities where we try to engage
- 38:04Speaker 4: to and and try to find an open guy, or
- 38:07Speaker 4: you know, don't over dribble.
- 38:08Speaker 3: You know, we always say don't dribble. What Kobe wouldn't dribble?
- 38:11Speaker 4: You know, if you're dribbling the gap there, so one's
- 38:13Speaker 4: waiting that gap for you in this league, and you know,
- 38:16Speaker 4: nine out of ten times they're gonna probably turn you over.
- 38:18Speaker 4: So you've got to be to get that ball moving.
- 38:20Speaker 4: It's really hard to play one on one basketball in
- 38:23Speaker 4: this league as well, because there's good athletes, good length
- 38:26Speaker 4: in this league. So you know, for us, I think
- 38:29Speaker 4: we've also tried to make a conscience help to play
- 38:31Speaker 4: inside out. We want that ball to get to the paint,
- 38:34Speaker 4: where we've been at our best when the ball gets
- 38:36Speaker 4: to the paint. I mean, we scored forty points in
- 38:38Speaker 4: the paint the other day, but when we're shooting paint
- 38:42Speaker 4: touch threes, we're putting the ball in the post, and
- 38:46Speaker 4: Kayden Cedric is giving us a post presence he's giving
- 38:48Speaker 4: us a post presence. It changes everything, you know, and
- 38:52Speaker 4: so you want to be able to play inside out.
- 38:54Speaker 4: It's really hard to go through this conference where you're
- 38:57Speaker 4: coming down, making one pass and shooting the basket.
- 39:00Speaker 3: Come on the ball that touch the paint.
- 39:01Speaker 4: So we work really hard on trying to get paint
- 39:03Speaker 4: touches just like everybody does.
- 39:06Speaker 3: Uh and play inside out. One quick other thing.
- 39:11Speaker 5: Is Shedner getting more opportunities like in transition and I
- 39:16Speaker 5: like maybe setting a screen and then dashing to the basket.
- 39:19Speaker 2: For a dunk, that kind of thing.
- 39:21Speaker 4: I mean, we've always you know, he's in basketball in general.
- 39:25Speaker 4: One of the hardest things to guard is in transition
- 39:27Speaker 4: is setting ball strings. You know, your ball stream coverage
- 39:30Speaker 4: in transition. You know, so transition ball stream offense for
- 39:35Speaker 4: us is important. You know, we don't have an easy
- 39:38Speaker 4: basket or easy lay up. You know, we want to
- 39:41Speaker 4: come down and you know, maybe set a signal drag,
- 39:43Speaker 4: double drag, and then we start our flow from that
- 39:46Speaker 4: point and stuff.
- 39:46Speaker 3: There are a lot of teams and it's rented.
- 39:48Speaker 4: The way the NBA plays, there's a lot of signal drags,
- 39:50Speaker 4: double drags, restream you know, step up streams, you know,
- 39:54Speaker 4: so we try to do a lot of those same things,
- 39:57Speaker 4: you know, as we're initiating our offense.
- 39:59Speaker 2: Up to now.
- 40:01Speaker 1: One other important element here to bring up, because we're
- 40:05Speaker 1: gonna hear from Devin Pryor coming up at the next segment.
- 40:08Speaker 1: In case you didn't know this about Devin Pryor, who
- 40:10Speaker 1: is a red shirt freshman. But in case you didn't know,
- 40:14Speaker 1: Devin is one of those kids who quote unquote reclassified
- 40:18Speaker 1: to enter early. So in other words, he entered in
- 40:21Speaker 1: what would have been his senior season of high school.
- 40:23Speaker 1: He was able to reclassify. So Rodney was asked that,
- 40:27Speaker 1: you know, what does go into a player reclassifying, What
- 40:35Speaker 1: are some of the specifics and how does that work
- 40:37Speaker 1: and how do you decide on what you're going to
- 40:39Speaker 1: do in terms of your the player reclassifying into the system.
- 40:45Speaker 4: DP was a young kid, I mean deep when we
- 40:48Speaker 4: first got who was one of the first kids, to
- 40:49Speaker 4: be honest with you, came on an unofficial visit when
- 40:53Speaker 4: we first got here, you know, and uh, we kind
- 40:56Speaker 4: of tracked him a little bit throughout the course of
- 40:58Speaker 4: the next couple of years, and it wasn't until we
- 41:01Speaker 4: actually got into the recruitment process with him that we
- 41:05Speaker 4: we uh we were able to evaluate his academic situation
- 41:09Speaker 4: and found out that he could he could actually come
- 41:11Speaker 4: to school a lot earlier and uh and so you know,
- 41:14Speaker 4: our thought process was like, hey, this is this is
- 41:16Speaker 4: a kid that has an incredible upside, uh with the
- 41:20Speaker 4: with the with the with the great ceiling. Let's go
- 41:22Speaker 4: in and get him to the campus right now, start
- 41:25Speaker 4: working on his body and start trying to get him
- 41:28Speaker 4: physically ready to try to play at this level. He
- 41:31Speaker 4: came in that first year and put on about twenty
- 41:33Speaker 4: seven pounds, you know. Uh and uh, we thought that
- 41:37Speaker 4: there would be a chance throughout the course of that
- 41:39Speaker 4: season at some point that that he could actually crack
- 41:42Speaker 4: the lineup and get in there and play a.
- 41:43Speaker 3: Little bit and stuff. But but at it, as it.
- 41:45Speaker 4: Turned out, he didn't get an opportunity that year. But
- 41:49Speaker 4: he had an incredible summer. He had a great fall.
- 41:53Speaker 4: Uh and then and then he and then he falls
- 41:55Speaker 4: on a couple of hard times in terms of an injury,
- 41:57Speaker 4: so he misses about three weeks started to season.
- 42:00Speaker 3: Uh.
- 42:01Speaker 4: And you know, going into the season, we envisioned DP
- 42:04Speaker 4: being a guy that's in our rotation Uh, because he
- 42:07Speaker 4: had made a lot of strides over the summer in
- 42:09Speaker 4: the fall. But but it's its process was set back
- 42:13Speaker 4: a little bit with those uh, with those injuries, and
- 42:15Speaker 4: they were pretty tough injuries. They weren't easy injury to
- 42:18Speaker 4: come back from, and almost to the point of where
- 42:21Speaker 4: it almost took a season uh and everything, but uh,
- 42:25Speaker 4: he stayed with it. Warning those guys did a great job,
- 42:28Speaker 4: you know, with his rehab, and he's worked his way
- 42:31Speaker 4: back in you know, and uh, he's playing terrific.
- 42:34Speaker 3: For us right now.
- 42:35Speaker 4: He brings a lot of energy and activity when he
- 42:37Speaker 4: comes to the floor. And uh, I think the best
- 42:41Speaker 4: is yet to come for for.
- 42:43Speaker 3: For DP.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Next and and of course DP Devon Pryor is a
- 42:48Speaker 1: red shirt freshman again.
- 42:49Speaker 2: We're gonna hear from him coming up in a few minutes. Uh.
- 42:53Speaker 1: But then there's the freshman, Trey Johnson, true freshman, named
- 42:56Speaker 1: SEC Freshman of the Week again coming off big uh
- 43:00Speaker 1: week both against O Mess and against LSU. Coaches often
- 43:06Speaker 1: say they learn from their players, even young players, and
- 43:10Speaker 1: so Roddie has asked what he has learned from Trey
- 43:12Speaker 1: Johnson in this freshman campaign and in turn, what he
- 43:16Speaker 1: feels Trey has learned from him.
- 43:18Speaker 4: What Tramon has done is he's really got back to
- 43:20Speaker 4: getting lost playing really hard on defense. I think that's
- 43:23Speaker 4: the one thing that's changed his whole game. You know,
- 43:26Speaker 4: He's always been a guy that has had great length
- 43:28Speaker 4: and could be a really good defender. He was a
- 43:30Speaker 4: really good defender at Houston, you know, and when he
- 43:34Speaker 4: went to Arkansas he was called on more to score
- 43:36Speaker 4: the basketball, but still.
- 43:38Speaker 3: What could be a good willing defender.
- 43:40Speaker 4: I think yesterday, I mean the other day when we
- 43:43Speaker 4: played LSU, he got so lost Old Gordon cam Carter.
- 43:45Speaker 4: He did an unbelievable job on the leading score in
- 43:48Speaker 4: the in the conference. To where when you get lost
- 43:52Speaker 4: playing that hard on defense, offense comes so much easier
- 43:55Speaker 4: to you. If you're trying to go out and you're
- 43:57Speaker 4: trying to play really hard on all and try to
- 44:00Speaker 4: have a great night, shooting your way into a great night.
- 44:03Speaker 4: You know, the best guys in the world have a
- 44:05Speaker 4: hard time doing that. NBA guys can't go in into
- 44:08Speaker 4: a game saying I'm gonna have a great night by
- 44:10Speaker 4: trying to score the basketball. I got to get out
- 44:12Speaker 4: there and try to play really hard, get lathered up
- 44:15Speaker 4: playing really hard nosed defense. And then when it's time
- 44:18Speaker 4: for me to make a meeting for shout out, make
- 44:19Speaker 4: a meeting for shot. It's tam for me to make
- 44:21Speaker 4: a meaningful pass, I'll make a meaningful pass. So you know,
- 44:25Speaker 4: I think he's really bought into. You know, I'm gonna
- 44:28Speaker 4: I know, I'm gonna have to go out one of
- 44:29Speaker 4: the better offensive players on the other team. I'm gonna
- 44:31Speaker 4: have to go out really hard. But I'm also gonna
- 44:33Speaker 4: be to be prepared to score that ball and move
- 44:36Speaker 4: the ball whenever I need to drive it as well.
- 44:39Speaker 4: So I think that's really giving him an opportunity to
- 44:42Speaker 4: play the way he's playing right now.
- 44:44Speaker 1: Yeah, that was talking about Tremon Mark and his evolution
- 44:47Speaker 1: this season. Now we'll hear more from Rodney Terry talking
- 44:50Speaker 1: about Trey Johnson coming up. But up next we'll hear
- 44:54Speaker 1: from Devine Pryor the reclassified redshirt freshman and his recent contributions.
- 44:58Speaker 2: We'll do that when we continue thirteen Under the Zone.
- 45:01Speaker 2: On a Tuesday afternoon, one day.
- 45:04Speaker 1: Away from Texas, Arkansas at Moody Center tomorrow night at
- 45:08Speaker 1: eight o'clock, you heard Ridding Terry talking about the Vin
- 45:11Speaker 1: pryor he has stepped up his game of late has
- 45:14Speaker 1: gotten back into the rotation. It was a big factor
- 45:19Speaker 1: in the win over LSU on Saturday.
- 45:22Speaker 2: So let's hear from the city.
- 45:24Speaker 1: He is a unique story and a really cool dude
- 45:27Speaker 1: and reclassified into becoming a freshman one year or early
- 45:32Speaker 1: and as a redshirt freshman right now. So the vine
- 45:37Speaker 1: was asked or dp is somebody liked to call him
- 45:40Speaker 1: on what it takes and what he has learned about
- 45:45Speaker 1: what it takes to stay on the floor.
- 45:48Speaker 2: What makes a difference for him.
- 45:49Speaker 5: I think for me, the biggest thing was this understanding
- 45:52Speaker 5: like where I best fit into our program and so
- 45:54Speaker 5: our system and where I could benefit other guys that
- 45:57Speaker 5: are you know, maybe need more scoring, or maybe I
- 45:59Speaker 5: can make up some of the defensive HLP on you know,
- 46:01Speaker 5: the backside of things, and you just just understanding my role.
- 46:04Speaker 6: And I really appreciate Arts for that.
- 46:07Speaker 2: He was in his real quick follow up.
- 46:08Speaker 5: I know you guys didn't get a chance to head
- 46:09Speaker 5: home to Austin until after the LSU trip. What was
- 46:12Speaker 5: that time like, just being away from awesome with the
- 46:15Speaker 5: guys for you know, three four or five days?
- 46:17Speaker 6: Uh No, it was it was Honestly, it was great.
- 46:19Speaker 5: You know, besides you know, other situation and other factors,
- 46:22Speaker 5: but you know, team chemistry really played a big part,
- 46:24Speaker 5: and the guys definitely got closer throughout that trip.
- 46:27Speaker 1: Yeah, they spent that They all said that they felt
- 46:29Speaker 1: like they had been away for like a week.
- 46:31Speaker 2: It was closed, it was five days.
- 46:33Speaker 1: But but it certainly didn't hurt in terms of the
- 46:36Speaker 1: team chemistry.
- 46:37Speaker 2: Okay, So here was a.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Question about his role and about it changing, and the
- 46:45Speaker 1: true measure of the fact that the reason Devon Pryor's
- 46:48Speaker 1: role changed with the team is something plain and simple.
- 46:52Speaker 2: He got healthy.
- 46:53Speaker 1: He's he's been banged up, bad ankle situation about other things.
- 46:57Speaker 1: That's why they couldn't get him in to the mix.
- 47:00Speaker 1: You might have heard Rodney Terry in the prior segment
- 47:03Speaker 1: talking about how he was planning to have prior in
- 47:08Speaker 1: the rotation. He would have been in the mix. He'd
- 47:10Speaker 1: been playing that well in the offseason work. They really
- 47:14Speaker 1: planned on using him, and then he had a series
- 47:16Speaker 1: of injuries that.
- 47:17Speaker 2: Kind of took him down. There was a knee thing
- 47:19Speaker 2: and ankle injury for sure.
- 47:21Speaker 1: So both of those were things that really studied his growth,
- 47:24Speaker 1: but he was asked about what has helped change for
- 47:28Speaker 1: him to an ends his role.
- 47:31Speaker 6: I think everything started in practice.
- 47:32Speaker 5: You know, I just just have to play hard and
- 47:36Speaker 5: play defense and you know, rebounding. So I try to
- 47:39Speaker 5: hone in on those particular aspects of the game. So
- 47:42Speaker 5: I could, you know, find my way eventually on the court,
- 47:44Speaker 5: and you know, it opens up a bigger role as
- 47:46Speaker 5: I progress through. And yeah, I'm starting to understand that.
- 47:50Speaker 3: And how much confidence is this team playing with right now?
- 47:54Speaker 5: We're playing with the most confidence right now. We all
- 47:57Speaker 5: believe in each other and we all understand what we
- 47:59Speaker 5: got to do to move or.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Yeah, which means to try to keep winning.
- 48:03Speaker 1: Next question for Devin Pryor was about that reclassification thing
- 48:09Speaker 1: and reclassifying and the thought process of everything that went
- 48:14Speaker 1: in to that decision to reclassify.
- 48:18Speaker 5: Yeah, most definitely, I did understand the situation I came
- 48:21Speaker 5: into with the older team that we had and you know,
- 48:23Speaker 5: the guys that were before me, So coming in I
- 48:26Speaker 5: didn't have no expectation to really play, but I just
- 48:28Speaker 5: wanted to get a jump start on like the physicality
- 48:30Speaker 5: and the understanding and just you know, pick up the pace.
- 48:33Speaker 6: So I think that decision is starting to pay off
- 48:35Speaker 6: a lot.
- 48:37Speaker 1: So next, since he made that decision, was there any
- 48:42Speaker 1: kind of regret about missing his final year of high
- 48:45Speaker 1: school to reclassify?
- 48:47Speaker 5: Like I said, I came into understanding what my position was,
- 48:50Speaker 5: so I immediately already had the mindset of I'm here
- 48:52Speaker 5: to get better physically, you know, just understand under the
- 48:55Speaker 5: guys that were before me.
- 48:56Speaker 1: And yeah, it makes a big difference if you have
- 49:02Speaker 1: the knowledge of that. So with that in mind, what's
- 49:05Speaker 1: the feeling like knowing that all of his hard work
- 49:07Speaker 1: is starting to pay some dividends.
- 49:09Speaker 6: Oh, there's no feeling like it.
- 49:11Speaker 5: You know, as a basketball player, as you said before,
- 49:12Speaker 5: you just want to get out there and play. So
- 49:14Speaker 5: being able to get on the court and help my
- 49:15Speaker 5: team win, you know, that's a big deal to me.
- 49:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:18Speaker 1: Then he was asked about what this off season was
- 49:22Speaker 1: like for him and what was going through his mind
- 49:25Speaker 1: as the team and the coaching staff were bringing in
- 49:29Speaker 1: more transfers.
- 49:30Speaker 2: What was that feeling like.
- 49:31Speaker 5: Really, like the guys that they brought in, I know them,
- 49:35Speaker 5: they know me. I understand what they do and what
- 49:38Speaker 5: they bring in, and I know my position as well,
- 49:40Speaker 5: and just talking with the coaches. I trust their plan
- 49:42Speaker 5: and I stayed with the plan, and I stayed the course,
- 49:44Speaker 5: and you know it's paying off.
- 49:46Speaker 6: Like before.
- 49:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's made a big difference on him now
- 49:50Speaker 1: in terms of the current time for him and what
- 49:55Speaker 1: he's trying to do and what he's trying to learn.
- 49:58Speaker 1: Devine was asked what he has learned working with and
- 50:04Speaker 1: playing with Trey Johnson, a true freshman, and how the
- 50:07Speaker 1: two have kind of helped one another.
- 50:09Speaker 5: You know, chose one of the guys that we try
- 50:11Speaker 5: to get going early, you know, and my job for
- 50:15Speaker 5: me at least, I just try to make everything easier
- 50:17Speaker 5: on the defensive side for him and you know, just
- 50:19Speaker 5: try to provide the extra help that he needs on
- 50:21Speaker 5: the court. And you know, as far as trading under McGrady,
- 50:25Speaker 5: my whole basketball awareness and IQ just went up exponentially.
- 50:29Speaker 1: What that was a reference to was he did have
- 50:33Speaker 1: some off season training under Tracy McGrady, the former NBA
- 50:36Speaker 1: stand out. All Right, you know, even when you're not playing,
- 50:42Speaker 1: you can contribute to the team, mainly by having the
- 50:46Speaker 1: energy and as the players and coaches like to say,
- 50:49Speaker 1: the juice coming from the bench. A guy like Kenda Weaver,
- 50:52Speaker 1: who right now is out because of that hip flexer
- 50:56Speaker 1: situation and we don't know how much longer he'll be out,
- 50:59Speaker 1: as he tried to get back on that. But Devon
- 51:02Speaker 1: Pryor was asked, did RT Rodney Terry? Did Coach Terry
- 51:08Speaker 1: talk to him about bringing that juice, that energy much
- 51:11Speaker 1: like what they've seen from Kenda Weaver.
- 51:13Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely talked about the similarities. And you know, with
- 51:16Speaker 5: my abilities, what can I bring to the court, And
- 51:18Speaker 5: I feel like I could bring just that and you
- 51:20Speaker 5: know that's that's what's helping me stay on in the court.
- 51:22Speaker 6: So I'm just trying to keep it.
- 51:23Speaker 1: Up, okay, which brings us to his gifts, his tools
- 51:28Speaker 1: that he brings to the parties.
- 51:29Speaker 2: Well, what would do Von Pryor say? His upside is the.
- 51:32Speaker 6: Coach staff knows what I can do. I know my ability.
- 51:35Speaker 5: I feel like my scoring ability can definitely be showcased
- 51:38Speaker 5: later on the future as I get decided, you know,
- 51:40Speaker 5: get better and things of that nature. But as far
- 51:43Speaker 5: as the game, I'm just trying to keep it as
- 51:45Speaker 5: simple as possible, and you know, it's trying.
- 51:46Speaker 1: To win, okay, So in its simplest terms, then what
- 51:51Speaker 1: would he say is his specific role. If he has
- 51:55Speaker 1: a specific role with this.
- 51:56Speaker 5: Team, it's definitely being defensive, being disruptive on the court,
- 52:00Speaker 5: trying to get rebounds, you know, just make big plays
- 52:02Speaker 5: and winning plays.
- 52:03Speaker 1: Okay, that's on the defensive side. But we know guys
- 52:06Speaker 1: like to make shots too. Does he have a favorite
- 52:08Speaker 1: shot that he likes.
- 52:10Speaker 5: I'm starting to my three point game is starting six spand,
- 52:12Speaker 5: but my favorite side is the pull up midi.
- 52:14Speaker 1: Okay, the pull up midi. That's good because you don't
- 52:19Speaker 1: often hear players talk about the pull up jumper being
- 52:24Speaker 1: being their favorite or one of their best. So there's
- 52:25Speaker 1: some thoughts from divine priort. All right, We've got some
- 52:28Speaker 1: other football notes that we'll get to coming up as
- 52:31Speaker 1: we continue on a Tuesday afternoon right here on AM
- 52:34Speaker 1: thirteen hunder the Zone, a third and final hour in
- 52:37Speaker 1: the program here on thirteen under the Zone, Tuesday afternoon here, Craig,
- 52:43Speaker 1: wait with you, glad that you today hopefully is going okay,
- 52:48Speaker 1: and it's nice weather outside going on, so hopefully that
- 52:52Speaker 1: helps as well. And you know, forgive me while a
- 52:59Speaker 1: call a little bit there. I'm still, like I said,
- 53:01Speaker 1: still trying to shake off the effects of the malady
- 53:05Speaker 1: of the weekend, but feeling much better now. The this week,
- 53:10Speaker 1: of course, is super Bowl Week, and you know a
- 53:13Speaker 1: lot of stuff happens on super Bowl Week.
- 53:15Speaker 2: If you ever go to.
- 53:18Speaker 1: A super Bowl venue city host city, in this case
- 53:24Speaker 1: at be New Orleans this week, if you ever go
- 53:27Speaker 1: through that, you will undoubtedly see all of the trappings
- 53:34Speaker 1: of the super Bowl and all that other kind of
- 53:35Speaker 1: stuff too, But just the carnival atmosphere that permeates everything
- 53:43Speaker 1: that has to do with the Super Bowl is sometimes
- 53:46Speaker 1: not to be believed. I've been to one, I've attended,
- 53:52Speaker 1: actually sat at two super Bowl games and covered three.
- 53:57Speaker 1: The one that I didn't stay was the first of
- 54:01Speaker 1: the back to back Cowboys super Bowl victories under Jimmy Johnson.
- 54:04Speaker 1: Was out there in LA the entire week doing talk shows,
- 54:07Speaker 1: going to all the press conferences. But I flew back
- 54:10Speaker 1: on Saturday, the day before the game because I had
- 54:13Speaker 1: a Texas basketball game that next day, or I flew
- 54:19Speaker 1: back on Friday evening as I had a basketball game
- 54:21Speaker 1: on Saturday Southwest Conference. That's how long ago. That was
- 54:25Speaker 1: the nineteen ninety two January of ninety three. That year
- 54:29Speaker 1: in ninety two. Additionally, the next year when the Cowboys
- 54:35Speaker 1: went back to repeat, I did stay for the whole
- 54:37Speaker 1: thing and cover the game itself. I did Jimmy Johnson's
- 54:40Speaker 1: radio show and Jerry Jones radio show those two years,
- 54:42Speaker 1: and I'll never forget in doing Jimmy's show the second
- 54:48Speaker 1: year in Atlanta, when the Cowboys played the Bills again,
- 54:53Speaker 1: Jimmy had told us he was always very professional to
- 54:56Speaker 1: work with, very good, but he did tell us I'm
- 54:59Speaker 1: not going to to be able to give you guys
- 55:01Speaker 1: a full hour to do a call in on Super
- 55:04Speaker 1: Bowl Week. And we understood that, and we said, how
- 55:06Speaker 1: about if we just do about twenty minutes.
- 55:10Speaker 2: We'll go into this.
- 55:11Speaker 1: It was basically a glorified broom closet that was given
- 55:15Speaker 1: to us as a quote unquote studio at the team hotel.
- 55:19Speaker 1: Why don't you just come in and just sit down.
- 55:20Speaker 1: We'll do just twenty minutes Q and a back and forth.
- 55:23Speaker 1: He said, that's fine, and that's what we did that year.
- 55:28Speaker 1: The one other Super Bowl that I went to was
- 55:30Speaker 1: when I was a college student, and people know I
- 55:33Speaker 1: was selling T shirts at concerts and things like that. Well,
- 55:36Speaker 1: I had an opportunity to go down and work Super
- 55:38Speaker 1: Bowl fifteen. That's how long I know. This was there
- 55:43Speaker 1: in New Orleans, between the Eagles and the Raiders. This
- 55:47Speaker 1: would have been January of eighty one. I was in college.
- 55:49Speaker 1: It was the week that the hostages were released from
- 55:51Speaker 1: Iran for those of you OG's who would remember those things.
- 55:58Speaker 1: And I went down there, me and my best friend Alex,
- 56:02Speaker 1: to work at But what we found out when we
- 56:04Speaker 1: got down there was well, you can't go. Even though
- 56:07Speaker 1: we had some official NFL licensed apparel with us, we
- 56:13Speaker 1: did not have a license. We were told by the
- 56:15Speaker 1: people that we were working for, who'd always been really
- 56:18Speaker 1: professional upfront to work with, but when we got down there,
- 56:20Speaker 1: they said, yeah, you can't sell these on the streets.
- 56:23Speaker 2: Of New Orleans.
- 56:24Speaker 1: What are you talking about, Well, because you don't, you're
- 56:27Speaker 1: not licensed as a vendor to work.
- 56:29Speaker 2: And you wait until we get all the way down
- 56:31Speaker 2: here to tell us that. Now, well we.
- 56:33Speaker 1: Didn't know until we got down blah blah blah, and
- 56:35Speaker 1: you know, so what are we supposed to do? Well,
- 56:37Speaker 1: maybe you can set up in account in a hotel
- 56:40Speaker 1: or something. So Alex and I were sitting in our
- 56:43Speaker 1: hotel room. This was on a Thursday night before the game,
- 56:47Speaker 1: looking at all this product in our hotel room, like,
- 56:49Speaker 1: what are we going to do? And then the local
- 56:51Speaker 1: news comes on and the news anchor says, well, you know,
- 56:54Speaker 1: this Super Bowl week here in New Orleans and all
- 56:56Speaker 1: the hotels are booked up and fans are stabbing to
- 56:59Speaker 1: stay as far away as an hour away in Baton Rouge.
- 57:03Speaker 2: We looked at each other and said ah.
- 57:06Speaker 1: We hopped in a rental car where he drove to
- 57:07Speaker 1: Baton Rouge, set up three accounts at a Hilton, a
- 57:10Speaker 1: Holiday Inn, and a Marriotte, and then just shuttled product
- 57:13Speaker 1: to them back and forth throughout the course of the weekend.
- 57:15Speaker 1: When the whole weekend was done, we paid for our
- 57:18Speaker 1: travel down there, our hotel room.
- 57:21Speaker 2: And got two tickets to the game.
- 57:25Speaker 1: We just bought two tickets to the game one hour
- 57:29Speaker 1: before kickoff.
- 57:29Speaker 2: We weren't even.
- 57:30Speaker 1: Planning to go to the game, but the guy asked
- 57:33Speaker 1: us in the elevator when we were staying in the
- 57:34Speaker 1: French Quarter, you guys going to the game? Well, we
- 57:36Speaker 1: thought we might check out the prices. He said, Hey,
- 57:40Speaker 1: I got two here you can have on the mezzanine
- 57:42Speaker 1: level of face value.
- 57:43Speaker 2: Really yeah, we.
- 57:44Speaker 1: Bought them forty bucks apiece, forty dollars backed them for
- 57:47Speaker 1: a super Bowl ticket, and we went to the game.
- 57:49Speaker 1: Not only did we do that, we took some of
- 57:51Speaker 1: our product and we took like these over the shoulder
- 57:54Speaker 1: almost like duffhold bag type things and slung owners. That
- 57:56Speaker 1: was in the day when you could take a big
- 57:57Speaker 1: old bag like that into a And we went in
- 58:01Speaker 1: there and sold everyone we had, including the ones off
- 58:04Speaker 1: our back, and walked back to half mile back to
- 58:06Speaker 1: the hotel bare chest that after the game.
- 58:09Speaker 2: It was about sixty degrees. It wasn't too bad. So
- 58:12Speaker 2: we did that and.
- 58:13Speaker 1: Then went home with about six hundred dollars profit after
- 58:16Speaker 1: the whole weekend. So it was a very profitable week
- 58:18Speaker 1: profitable weekend. But there's all kinds of goofy stuff that
- 58:21Speaker 1: happens with regard to the super Bowl and the carnival
- 58:24Speaker 1: environment that goes on around the super Bowl as well.
- 58:29Speaker 1: But I always have some super Bowl memories because of
- 58:31Speaker 1: stuff like that. Okay, bracketological prognostications in college basketball, as
- 58:39Speaker 1: we know, there's really two main sets. There's really three
- 58:42Speaker 1: or four sets now of you know, bracket predictions. I
- 58:50Speaker 1: always give credit Joe Lonardi. You know Joey Brackett's as
- 58:54Speaker 1: I liked him. He's the one who invented the term bracketology.
- 58:57Speaker 1: Now other outlets, media outlets have co opted that term.
- 59:04Speaker 1: It hasn't been the trademark by Lenardi, although he wrote
- 59:07Speaker 1: a book on bracketology. But he's the one who really
- 59:10Speaker 1: invented the science of it. So there's his And then
- 59:14Speaker 1: Jerry Palm does an excellent job with CBS Sports and
- 59:16Speaker 1: we've had him on the program as well, and he
- 59:20Speaker 1: does a good job. And there's a couple other outlets
- 59:22Speaker 1: to do it, but those are the two main ones,
- 59:24Speaker 1: the ESPN and CBS Sports. Okay, So on Joe Lenardi's Bracketology,
- 59:32Speaker 1: that was his latest updated one that was released about
- 59:35Speaker 1: nine thirty our time this morning. This is what he
- 59:38Speaker 1: has right now on his bracket watch top overall c Auburn.
- 59:42Speaker 2: I was surprised there. First team out.
- 59:46Speaker 1: U se f boy, if they've been able to hold
- 59:49Speaker 1: on and beat Kansas the other night, really would have
- 59:51Speaker 1: helped him. Last team in right now, he has his
- 59:54Speaker 1: Nebraska teams on the bubble the last four byes. That
- 59:58Speaker 1: means the teams that don't have to play in Dayton,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: he has Utah State, Ohio State, Vanderbilt, whom the Long
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: Horns play in Nashville this weekend, and Georgia.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: Last four in those.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: Are teams that would be playing in Dayton, Ohio, San
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: Diego State BYU Pittsburgh. Pitt really hurt themselves with a
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: sixteen point home loss last night to a below five
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: hundred Virginia team, so at San Diego BYU pitt and Nebraska.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Last four in first four al I mentioned UCF and
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: then also Xavior, Arizona State and USC in the next
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: four hour would be Wake Forest, SMU, North Carolina and Arkansas.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: They climbed into the next four out with their win
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: over Kentucky. They would look to take another big step
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: forward on that if they could win here in Austin
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: tomorrow night against Texas. So the way that Joe Lenardi
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: has his bracket set out in his sixty eighteen bracket,
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: the eight teams who would be playing in Dayton, He's
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: got in a matchup of sixteen seeds Omaha and Morehead
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: State and marist An American, then two eleven seed matchups
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: San Diego State and Nebraska, b YU and Pittsburgh. The
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: four number one seeds. Auburn would be in the South
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: region which brackets through to Atlanta, but they would open
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: in Lexing, Kentucky, and Alabama. In the Midwest in Indianapolis,
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: it would ultimately feed there, but they would start in
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: Lexington as well. Number one seed in the West. He
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: has Tennessee opening in Raleigh and eventually pushing out of
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: San Francisco and in the East, which ultimately arrives in Newark.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: Duke is the number one seed in Raleigh. Three SEC
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: teams and one ACC team. Those are the four number ones,
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: the four number two Houston in the South, Purdue in
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: the midwest, Iowa State although the arrow pointing down after
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: their loss last night to Kansas, that in San Francisco,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: out West and Florida, number two seed in Newark, and
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: then the three seeds he has Kentucky in the South
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: have an opening, Providence can't play on their home floor
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: in Lexington. He has Marquette in the Midwest in Indianapolis.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: Even though the Eagles are coming off, the loss of
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: the arrow pointing down right now turns a momentum are
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: trending down if you will. Texas A and m a
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: three seed on the rise, in the West to ultimately
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: feed to San Francisco and Kansas, the three in the
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: East opening. So Texas, you ask Joe Lonardi, who two
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: weeks ago had Texas not even in the field, now
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: has the Loghorns as a number nine seed in.
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: The East bracket that would ultimately go to Newark.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: He has Texas opening in Raleigh against wait for it,
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: the eight seed Baylor. How about that. It's a Baylor
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: Texas eight nine matchup there first, and then the winner
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: would in all probability get Duke in the second round.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: But that's that's where he has Texas right now. Now
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: that's where Lenardi has them. Jerry Palm right now has
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: Texas as a ten seed.
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: He does have him in the field.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: He doesn't have him as a play in or a
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: last four in or anything like that, but he does
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: have him as a ten seed. And he has them
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: opening in Cleveland. Although he has them in the South region.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: He has them opening in Cleveland against Louisville, a seven seed,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: and then could play a two versus fifteen matchup. And
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: I get this, the two versus fifteen matchup is Marquette
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: against unc Asheville. I know you're saying Oh wow, Texas
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: could go up against Shaka. Remember they did that last year,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: played him in played him in Milwaukee.
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: I do that.
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: The fifteen seed that they have there listed unc Asheville
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: was coached by Mike Morell, who was on Shaka staff
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: when they coached here in Texas. So there's even more
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: wrinkles there. All right, there's We'll share some more bracketology
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: information as we go forward, But up next, we're gonna
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: hear more from Logorn's head coach, Rodney Terry, getting his
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: team ready for this matchup tomorrow night against Arkansas when
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: we continue on AM thirteen.
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: Under the Zone.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: Back here on the Zone as we continue on this
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: Tuesday afternoon and getting you ready for this matchup with
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: Texas and Arkansas. You heard me mention the latest bracketology predictions.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: And for those who said, what do you you know?
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: Is that really that big of deal? The only reason
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: why I even go into those and mention that is
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: because Joe Lonardi's success rate. Because I know a lot
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: of people saying, you know a lot of the gambling
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: sites and stuff, they are only about sixty sixty five
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: percent KRAG something like that. Joe Lonardi has a ninety
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: seven percent accuracy rate on his projections ninety seven percent,
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: and he's had years where he's gotten all but maybe
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: one correct, like ninety nine percent, and then he's had
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: like the seedings and where they're playing in high measure
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: as well. Now that's really hard to be able to project,
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: but that's what he asks. He's been really good at it.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: So that's why it's only really meant as a guideline
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: to let you know where Texas may be fought of
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: right now in the eyes of the committee. Because Joe
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: didn't sit on the committee, but he knows how the
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: committee works with the criteria that they use, and he
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: visits with a lot of them from time to time,
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: so he has a pretty good handle on that, and
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: so does Jerry Palm, and that's why I mentioned both
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: of those guys. So that's to let you know where
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: Texas is right now in his eyes. Lenardes, Texas is
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: a nine seed. Jerry Palm theer a tent. In other words,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: there's work to do regardless, and starting with tomorrow night,
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: if they find a way to get past Arkansas, then
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: it pulls them to level five hundred in Conference play
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: five and five in the top rated conference in the
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: country and then would have them at seventeen and seven,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: so they would have an opportunity to continue to build
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: on that. So anyway, let's hear more from Longhorn's head coach,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: Rodney Terry. And so Rodney's got and this is a
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: question I asked him. I'm trying to remember who it
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: was I asked him about, but about when a player
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: goes up Oh, I know what. It was something to
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: asked with Vick Schaeffer about a player going up against
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: his former school. And I asked Vick about that about
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: one of his players for the Texas women's team. Of course,
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: Tremon Mark is from Dickinson down in the Greater Houston
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: area and actually began his collegiate career at U of
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: H at Houston. Then after playing there, he transferred to
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: Arkansas played for Arkansas last year. Now he's a long
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: worn and here he is about to go up against
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: his former school, the Arkansas Razorbacks. And so the question
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: for Rodnie was how does he handle it as a
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: head coach when he knows he has a player going
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: up against his former school.
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: You know what, I.
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: Don't really think it matters to these guys right now.
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: I mean, it's the next opponent for us. It's an
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: opponent that we respect at a great at a high level,
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: and I think it's again just the next challenge in
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: front of us. So I don't think it really has
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: any bearing in terms of in terms of who we
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: who were playing with with the with Treymont, I mean,
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: I can't speak for him, but but I would think
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: that it's just it's the next opponent.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: Arkansas got the big win at Kentucky. As we know,
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: that's been easily easy, their brightest spot in an otherwise
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: difficult season. They were one in six and SEC play
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: going into that game before they found a way to win.
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: So Roddy was asked why did he feel Arkansas have
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: been struggling UH to that point and what are some
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: of the key benchmarks what he expects from a John
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: Calipari coach team.
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: I don't know about struggling.
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: I mean, I mean, Joey Caliberry has always gotten players.
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: He's a Hall of Fame coach for for a reason.
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: I mean, he's he's been one of the one of
- 1:08:33Speaker 4: the all time great recruiters.
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: Of all time.
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: But he's also been a guy that's that's you know,
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: I think managed players really well over the years as well.
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: I mean you probably you can't find a player that's
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: played for coach Kal that doesn't love him like a father,
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: you know, and they all come back and they rally
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: around him, you know, and so you know, I think
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: his impact again, you know, goes further than just basketball
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: with with his with his players. But uh, his his
- 1:09:00Speaker 4: teams are always played fast. His team, you know here
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: right now is an athletic team. He's got, you know,
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: a talented roster. He's always gonna have a talented roster.
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: You know, from top to bottom. His top eight guys
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: or are extremely talented players. They're athletic, they play really
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: fast in transition. Uh, they crashed the glass. They put
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: a lot of pressure on the paint. They've always put
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: pressure on the paint. They you know, he was big
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: with the dribble drive for a while there and.
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: Things of that nature there.
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: But but they're a team that constantly puts pressure on
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: you in transition and in the half court, attacking the basket. Defensively,
- 1:09:34Speaker 4: you know, they're playing probably as well as anyone.
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: In the league. You know, They've got a lot of
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: really good ball pressure.
- 1:09:40Speaker 4: They're trying to take you out of your initial offensive
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: execution and what you're trying to get done. They're they're
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: they're pretty good defensively right now. They played they played
- 1:09:49Speaker 4: exceptional the other night against Kentucky, uh, defensively, and so
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: you know, again Cal's got his guys playing pretty good
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: right now at.
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: The right time of the year.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and just on the face taxes the first of
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: two meetings, by the way, within a span of let
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: me see if I remember this right, almost three weeks,
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: twenty days, I guess, because they'll play in Fayettell I
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: believe on the twenty fourth or twenty fifth. Anyway, back
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: to the divine prior thing about reclassifying.
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: From his senior year in high school.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: Artie was asked us it had to be a real
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: special player in his mind in order for him to
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: decide to go ahead and have that conversation about whether
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: that player reclassifies.
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: You know what, I think, I think.
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: It's probably an individual type situation. I don't think it's
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: for everybody, you know. I think I think for kids
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: that have a chance or have a ceiling, like a
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: guy like DP has, you know, they's a chance that
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: he may not be in school four years, you know
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: what I mean. So you know, you just kind of
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: fast forward in his product process a lot quicker, you
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: know what I mean.
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: I mean, Dp's a guy. You know, we have NBA
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: guys come in here.
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: He's probably one of my most athletic guys on this team,
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: you know, and stuff, and you know, his selling again
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: of where he could be in the future moving forward.
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: I mean it's he's not even stretching it just yet,
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: you know, and things.
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: But but uh, you take a guy like that with
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: young talent, you want to bring him in and start
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: trying to get his body to to to to reach
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: the potential that he has from a from a basketball standpoint,
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: because he's gonna need that, and start teaching him what's
- 1:11:35Speaker 4: gonna take to be successful at this level.
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: And uh, smart kid.
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: Particulate, you know, could come in and handle the academic
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: side of it, would be no problems. Well, so all those,
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: all those factors are important to it. With the intangibles
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: to bring a kid early to school uh as well.
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: So I would say that you know, would be the
- 1:11:54Speaker 4: case for us. I mean, a kid that has an
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: upside like that, you want to go ahead and get
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: him in your program, get him acclimate it up already,
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: and with the thought process is that he may not
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: be with you that long anyway, you may have a.
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: Short time with him.
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's it's almost kind of like the football
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: thing about early and relies. By the way, in case
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: you hadn't noticed, tomorrow is National Signing Day. That used
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: to ring an awful lot when the first Wednesday in
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: February was so huge National Signing Day for college football.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: Now it's a secondary date because of the early signing period,
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: so it doesn't carry with it the pizazz, the cachet
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: that the that that the original signing date did for
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: a long long time. I'll have some thoughts on that
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: coming up in the next segment. But anyway, some more
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: from Rodney Terry. Now, this is a question that I
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: understand why it was asked. It was asked by reporter
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: trying to gain a little more insight into what the
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: life of players can be like outside of the game
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: of basketball. So Rodney Terry was asked about this. Does
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: he talk to the team a lot about life outside
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: of basketball?
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: You better believe he does.
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: Well.
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: We try to shed Terry is a great point you know,
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: and again we're blessed every day with everything that's going on.
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: You know, I just said to our guys today, how
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: precious life is, you know, And you know, we had
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: a tragic couple of tragic situations here late, you know,
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: and we've lost some really you know, young people, you know,
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: young figure skaters, you know that have promising careers, you know,
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: and you just have to every single day count your
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: blessings and have a lot of gratitude for being here
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: every day. But I let a lot of times our
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: formal players speak to our guys. I found a great
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: clip on Tristan Thompson talking about.
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: The importance of of.
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: Being an incredible teammate every day to try to help
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: his team that he's currently on right now win a
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: world championship and what that consisted of if he needed
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: to come in and be the best scout team guy,
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: you know, defensively, whatever he needed to do in terms
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: of helping a guy you know, offensively to try to
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: be the best version of himself, but just being a
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: guy that's a giver and at that levels one through fifteen,
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: understanding even if you're number fifteen or number fourteen or
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: thirteen on that roster. Your importance to the to the
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: team and trying to help win a championship is very valuable.
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: And that's that's really important. And you know, Tristan has.
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: Been one of those guys his whole career, you know,
- 1:14:54Speaker 4: and he's made a great career out of it. He's
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: made a lot of money to your point being that
- 1:14:59Speaker 4: kind of but I think you're trying to give guys
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: life lessons.
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: You know all the time. You know, you got to
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: earn everything you get in life.
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: No one's gonna give you anything in life, you know,
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: and but you learn to appreciate the work at that
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: that goes into how hard you have to work to
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: get where you want to get to. No one can
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: ever take that away from you. So you you know,
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: you try to teach those guys those valuable lessons in
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: the game of life, paring them for the game of
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: life in terms of being able to be a great provider,
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: be a great husband, and those those are the kind
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: of things.
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: You try to instill in guys.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: I need some sage words there from Rodney Terry. I
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: have a little more from RT coming up, and then
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: those thoughts on National Signing Day when we continue here,
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: I'm thirteen under the zone.
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: It's interesting listening to that.
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: iHeart Sports Update on this day in history because when
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: you get into January and then on in the February, yeah,
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: especially January, but also in the February, you start getting
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: all those anniversaries of Super Bowl And of course the
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: super Bowls didn't start being played in February until right
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: around the turn of the century, I think it was, but.
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: It was, you know, January.
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: Like for example, wherever I am, whenever I think about
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: it on January twelfth, on the twelfth, I always think
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: about Super Bowl three and the Big Jets upset of
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: the Baltimore Colts in super Bowl three. That was January twelfth,
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: nineteen sixty nine. I think about January eleventh. One of
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: the earliest super Bowls played was Kansas City beating Minnesota
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: the next.
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: Year an underdog in super Bowl four.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: And just so you'll know, the earliest super Bowl ever
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: played was January ninth, nineteen seventy seven, of Super Bowl eleven,
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: the Raiders beating the Vikings. Is the way the calendar
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: fell that year, and it was January ninth. But now
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: they're you know here, it is more than a month
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: later that they'll be playing Super Bowl fifty nine this
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: week in New Orleans. A couple other things to hear
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: from from Rodney Terry previewing this Texas Arkansas basketball game.
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: I pointed this out earlier that you know, it's one.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: Of those deals where you have a player who used
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: to play for one side now playing for Texas going
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: up against his former school. And he said he didn't
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: really say that much to him about it, but he
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: was asked with regard to Tremon Mark going up against
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: his former team, does he really point, you know, back
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: and forth, does he really want his team to really
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: go on the attack. And what he's looking for was
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: does he tell Tremon Mark to really go attack Arkansas
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: much like he did on Saturday and then win at LSU.
- 1:17:46Speaker 4: But I think it's really hard because they've only got
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: one player back from that team. Brazil is the only
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: only player that's back from that team last year, you know,
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: and so it's a whole new team. And you know,
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: even when we had tyres here that they and I
- 1:18:00Speaker 4: tried to add coach to ty Reech was just you know,
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: get lost in in your team, don't get lost in
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: the environment, don't worry about what people are saying. Block
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: out the noise, you know, and just just you know, again,
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: be the best version of yourself. And uh, you know,
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: you control what you can control. And uh, I think,
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: you know, the same thing with Treymont, you know. I
- 1:18:22Speaker 4: think for for him, I think his focus with our team,
- 1:18:25Speaker 4: it's about us continue to try to get better both
- 1:18:28Speaker 4: on and off the court as.
- 1:18:29Speaker 3: A season, uh continues.
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: And uh, you know, a big game obviously because it's
- 1:18:35Speaker 4: the next game and an opponent that we respect, and uh,
- 1:18:39Speaker 4: you know, I don't think it will have as much
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: effect here probably as it will maybe when we go
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: over there that that he will have to possibly deal
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: with that a little bit of stuff.
- 1:18:48Speaker 3: But you know, just kind of the landscape of college
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: athletics right now. Kids are are gonna have those opportunities.
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: You're in and you're out, and you have to be
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: able to just thank them for the services that they
- 1:18:57Speaker 4: give you for the year.
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: They're with you.
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: Yeah, Tyreek Hunter was the guy was trying to think
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: of going against his former team when he played for
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: Texas last year and they played against Iowa State. For
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: heaven's sakes, if the Long Word should wind up facing
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: Memphis in the NCAA tournament, they'd see Tyree's hunter again
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: since he now plays for the Memphis Tigers, and they're
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: having a pretty good season, all right. And then one
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: other thing about Tremon mark again, his defense has been
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: really good, And Rodney was asked if examples of what
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: Tremon has done and improving his defensive game helps a
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: freshman like Trey Johnson who has gotten better defensively, is
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: the year has gone along?
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: Well?
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: I got a chance to point to them all right
- 1:19:43Speaker 4: about it. Trust me, it was a little bit bored
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: and borning. No, those two guys in particular, But no,
- 1:19:50Speaker 4: I'm you know what, I'll give both of those guys
- 1:19:52Speaker 4: credit though. When I did challenge those guys, those two
- 1:19:55Speaker 4: guys would challenge really hard in the film session, really
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: really hard in front of the whole team.
- 1:20:00Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: And and I'll give those guys credit. They've really have
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: answered the bell in terms of being guys that really
- 1:20:08Speaker 3: work hard on that side of the ball.
- 1:20:10Speaker 4: They I mean, they're trying and playing harder they can defensively,
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: and uh uh it's helped change our team, you know.
- 1:20:18Speaker 4: And uh, prior to that, not that they weren't playing
- 1:20:22Speaker 4: playing great, They just weren't playing at the level they
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: need to play, and they need to play really hard
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: on defense, and you gotta be a two way player
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: and uh so. So no, they've had a chance to
- 1:20:31Speaker 4: to to have been called out in front of the
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: team and uh uh and they have responded. I will,
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: I will give them credit for that. Trades responded. You
- 1:20:41Speaker 4: see him playing, trying to play really hard on defense.
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: He's wanted to try to guard, you know, the opposing
- 1:20:47Speaker 4: team's best offensive player.
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: You know, so he's taking on that challenge. And that's
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: what you wanted to see.
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: You want to see if if guys were gonna be competitive, Okay,
- 1:20:55Speaker 4: if they were gonna take the coach.
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: In the right way in that regards.
- 1:20:58Speaker 4: And and I'll I'll say it without in the reservation,
- 1:21:01Speaker 4: I'll say it in front of our team. I think
- 1:21:03Speaker 4: they've they've responded in a in a very positive light
- 1:21:05Speaker 4: in that regards. But they had they had some really
- 1:21:09Speaker 4: tough come to Jesus talks about that.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: Yeah it can, it might be that way, and trying
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: to get Trey Johnson's defensive game up, and it has
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: gotten better, it has improved. They all did a really
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: good job. And I understand things are relative. All things
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: are relative based on the type of team they were
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: facing an LSU but still to play the way they
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: did on the road unless you played Auburn tough the
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: prior Wednesday at home, and the long words just dismantled
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: the Tigers. So that was impressive to see there. All Right,
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: I was I was going to bring this up, and
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: tomorrow is a national signing day, uh for college football.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: But it's not like it was like it used to be.
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: It used to be the big thing in February. On
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: that first Wednesday in February, you kind of, depending on
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: your level of excitement and enthusiasm and interest in the
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: whole recruiting landscape, could wait breathlessly or perhaps maybe not breathlessly,
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: but waited eagerly anticipating.
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: The names that would come down on the list.
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: And when I was working up in Dallas at KRLD,
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: Brad Sham was doing the talk show when I was
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: Brad's producer, and a big part of what we did
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: was on National Signing Day, Brad would get a recruiting
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: analyst on, or he would get somebody else on, or
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: you know, a coach from one of the Southwest Conference
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: schools or whatever on with him. My job was to
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: compile the information, the list of all of the sinees,
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: and it would come off the ap wire machine. Now
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: this is this is old school, I get it. You know,
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: there's a lot of people would say what because in
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: the pre internet days on that you the news would
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: come over the ap ap wire machine, you know, like
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: a teletype thing. It would come across like that and
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: you would tear it off and you'd have all this
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: copied and support. It'd be just like if you were
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: reading something coming down like on your laptop from one
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: of the wire services news services, CNN dot com or
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: or something like that. But they also had their sports
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: division and they would have all of the signing list
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: and it would come out and it would and would
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: and it'd be like this long, long roll of paper
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: rolling off of a spool because they had to. It
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: would list each player individually for each of the back
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: then nine schools in the Southwest Conference Arkansas, Texas, Texas
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: A and m Byler Rice, TCU, SMU Houston, Uh, you know,
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: all of the all of the Southwest Conference schools and
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: he had to play. And then you would also have
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: North Texas in there, and even while he was telling
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: Football ut Arlington before they dropped the program after the
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: eighty five season, And they have all of these signees listed,
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: so I had to gather up this big spool with
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: all the side of the and then Brad would read
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: those on the air, or I would read them, or
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: both of us would or whatever.
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: And and that's how it was back then.
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: You waited for those names to magically appear there through
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: the ap wire machine, and you just ran down the
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: list and you went for it, and that's how you
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: found out about them for sure that they had actually
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: signed that day. This is, of course, pre social media,
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: so you're not going to find out instantaneously that somebody signed.
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: Not only that now it's all changed because of the
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: early signing day in December, which I think is a
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: good thing for that and but but they still have
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: the secondary date for those who haven't made their decisions
