- 2:33Speaker 2: Thanks for being on the show today. Now get some
- 2:36Speaker 2: big news about your organization, about your facility. We'll get
- 2:39Speaker 2: that a little bit later on, but first of all,
- 2:41Speaker 2: for those who may have not heard you on the
- 2:43Speaker 2: show before, Dick or Johnny, the one of you. Dick,
- 2:46Speaker 2: we'll start with you. Jump in there. Tell us about
- 2:48Speaker 2: this organization that you have, sure, Dave.
- 2:51Speaker 4: The canav Valley Fellowship Home is a men's sober living
- 2:54Speaker 4: facility that is right next door across the parking lot
- 2:58Speaker 4: actually from WCCHS. We've been a sober living We're the
- 3:04Speaker 4: oldest one in state of West Virginia. We've been we
- 3:06Speaker 4: were started in nineteen sixty seven as an outreach mission
- 3:09Speaker 4: of the First Presbyterian Church, which is also in this
- 3:13Speaker 4: block on the other end on the Leon Sullivan Way,
- 3:16Speaker 4: and we help men. Originally it was a halfway house
- 3:19Speaker 4: for men that suffered from alcoholism, and it's morphed into
- 3:25Speaker 4: a big sober living facility that helps men overcome the
- 3:29Speaker 4: component after treatment or incarceration. The sober living component is important,
- 3:34Speaker 4: the sober living and the aftercare part. But we provide
- 3:37Speaker 4: those services to help people, to give them the time
- 3:40Speaker 4: for them their minds to heal and their bodies to heal,
- 3:44Speaker 4: and to get into a program of action where they,
- 3:48Speaker 4: you know, they learn how to live sober without drugs
- 3:50Speaker 4: and alcoholic.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Talk about that aftercare, after they have gone through this, Nick,
- 3:55Speaker 2: I mean that's I mean.
- 3:56Speaker 4: What we call after care. Actually, the thing we're talking
- 3:59Speaker 4: about today is aftercare. We have an intensive phase one
- 4:02Speaker 4: program that lasts six months where they come it's an
- 4:05Speaker 4: intake and we have a curfew. We drug test randomly often,
- 4:09Speaker 4: we feed them, We have addiction counseling, we have we
- 4:13Speaker 4: have a lot of they have to get either an
- 4:15Speaker 4: AA or an NA sponsor. They have to do a
- 4:17Speaker 4: lot of positive things to help improve their improve their lives,
- 4:21Speaker 4: and they they after phase one. When you graduate from
- 4:24Speaker 4: that aftercare is these are going to be studio style apartments.
- 4:28Speaker 4: They are a little more flexibility that you'll you won't
- 4:31Speaker 4: have a curfew anymore, so you can work uh in
- 4:33Speaker 4: the evenings, or you can go to school uh And
- 4:36Speaker 4: and so aftercare we continue to monitor progress and we
- 4:40Speaker 4: found our outcomes are better when people stay in our
- 4:42Speaker 4: facility for at least one year after they after they
- 4:45Speaker 4: come in.
- 4:46Speaker 2: And John Jared is also with John. I know you're
- 4:48Speaker 2: very involved in this program. Thank you for being here today, sir,
- 4:51Speaker 2: glad to be Why have you pulled that microphone up
- 4:52Speaker 2: to you just a little bit?
- 4:54Speaker 5: There?
- 4:54Speaker 2: There you go, there, there you go, there you go.
- 4:56Speaker 2: So talk about your involvement in all this.
- 4:59Speaker 6: Well, Dave, I'm involved and had blessed to see and
- 5:04Speaker 6: meet Dick a year and a half or so ago.
- 5:06Speaker 2: When we found out you guys only met a year
- 5:09Speaker 2: and a half ago, I mean honestly, I thought, I
- 5:12Speaker 2: mean I thought you guys had been friend forever. I mean,
- 5:14Speaker 2: really I did. I'm surprised to you there, but go ahead.
- 5:16Speaker 6: Well, Dick's kind of guy's easy to be friends with,
- 5:19Speaker 6: and his mission is one that we're able to support wholeheartedly,
- 5:23Speaker 6: and it hits close to home for me, and if
- 5:26Speaker 6: you're able to attend the groundbreaking tomorrow, I'll share a
- 5:29Speaker 6: little bit more of that story. But my dad was
- 5:31Speaker 6: involved with the Kanawh Valley Fellowship Home. He was a
- 5:35Speaker 6: resident there back when it was in the house right
- 5:38Speaker 6: beside First Presby, and he stayed there for a couple
- 5:42Speaker 6: of years back in the late eighties. And I got
- 5:45Speaker 6: to meet the executive director when he was staying there,
- 5:48Speaker 6: Louse Smith, and I got to know a little bit
- 5:51Speaker 6: about the program then and have been blessed at this
- 5:54Speaker 6: time in my life to be able to get with
- 5:57Speaker 6: the Kannah Valley Fellowship Home and help support them. And
- 6:01Speaker 6: we're looking forward to tomorrow's festivities.
- 6:04Speaker 2: And Dick, this is you told your story on the
- 6:09Speaker 2: show before, but again people may be listening for the
- 6:11Speaker 2: first time.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Tell us your story, well, Dave, I suffered from alcoholism.
- 6:18Speaker 4: I was a drinker, bad to drink, they say, and
- 6:22Speaker 4: from an early age as a really I started drinking
- 6:25Speaker 4: when I was in junior high school. And my family
- 6:29Speaker 4: is afflicted. There's alcoholism in my family and my dad
- 6:32Speaker 4: was recovering alcoholic. In fact, today is the anniversary of
- 6:36Speaker 4: his passing February third, nineteen or two thousand and nineteen,
- 6:40Speaker 4: and he was a person in long term recovery. He
- 6:44Speaker 4: was sober thirty nine years when he died. And so anyway,
- 6:49Speaker 4: I didn't have a bad childhood, but I grew up
- 6:51Speaker 4: around alcohol and drinking, and it was one of those
- 6:54Speaker 4: things that a habit turned into an obsession that turned
- 6:57Speaker 4: into a disease.
- 6:59Speaker 2: And the disease, you know, I couldn't quit.
- 7:01Speaker 4: When I wanted to quit, or when I wanted to
- 7:02Speaker 4: do the right thing, I couldn't do it because I
- 7:04Speaker 4: was obsessed and compulsed to drink against my will, really,
- 7:09Speaker 4: and so it's through the fellowship of the Twelve Step
- 7:12Speaker 4: movement that helped me get sober. And so part of
- 7:16Speaker 4: my passion is you know, I've been a businessman in
- 7:19Speaker 4: the past here in West Virginia and Charleston, and I've
- 7:22Speaker 4: done a lot of different things. I've been a car dealer,
- 7:24Speaker 4: and I've been a boat captain, and I've done consulting work,
- 7:28Speaker 4: and I've done all sorts of stuff. But as a blessing,
- 7:30Speaker 4: because of my sobriety, all those things have happened because
- 7:33Speaker 4: I was sober, and I've been a volunteer at this organization,
- 7:37Speaker 4: the Kenaw Valley Fellowship Home, for over thirty years, and
- 7:40Speaker 4: the director retired five years ago. I've been there five
- 7:44Speaker 4: years now, and I applied for the job as a
- 7:47Speaker 4: segue into retirement, and we saw a need. With the
- 7:50Speaker 4: opioid crisis that's amongst us right now, we saw a
- 7:53Speaker 4: need to expand because we have turned down more than
- 7:55Speaker 4: twelve hundred men, more than twelve hundred applications in the
- 7:59Speaker 4: five years I've been there, and we need more beds
- 8:01Speaker 4: and we need we feel we're the best program in
- 8:03Speaker 4: the state, and we need more beds, and so it's
- 8:06Speaker 4: my part of my mission. I got introduced to John,
- 8:09Speaker 4: which was fortuitous because I'd been his friend since childhood.
- 8:15Speaker 4: I could it because we've become we're big sports fans
- 8:17Speaker 4: and we share a lot of the same interest So
- 8:21Speaker 4: and then he told me the story about his dad
- 8:23Speaker 4: and that that nailed it, and it just you know
- 8:25Speaker 4: that them as a construction partner, and my friend Tom
- 8:29Speaker 4: Pott's over at Selling Associates. He's retired, he's emeritis now
- 8:32Speaker 4: it's selling, but Selling is an architecture firm that's also
- 8:35Speaker 4: going to be involved in this project. And just we're
- 8:37Speaker 4: gonna you know, it's a mission that's turned into it's
- 8:41Speaker 4: I'm driven by a sense of purpose and passion and
- 8:44Speaker 4: to get to be with to hear John's I'm tearful
- 8:48Speaker 4: every time I hear his story about his dad. It
- 8:51Speaker 4: means so much to me that that I want to
- 8:53Speaker 4: see men. We want to see a sick man get well,
- 8:56Speaker 4: and we can do that with the help of John
- 8:58Speaker 4: and the Canal val Felship.
- 8:59Speaker 2: From talk about this. So you've got a groundbreaking coming
- 9:03Speaker 2: up tomorrow, John, talk about.
- 9:04Speaker 6: Them groundbreaking right right next door to the studios here, Dave.
- 9:08Speaker 6: Tomorrow morning at ten thirty, Dick will get up and
- 9:12Speaker 6: tell us a little more about the Fellowship Home and
- 9:15Speaker 6: its mission. We'll have a blessing from Pastor William Myers
- 9:20Speaker 6: at First Presby, and Dick's been over there with residents
- 9:25Speaker 6: from the Fellowship Home. He's already got started. So some
- 9:28Speaker 6: of the work's already started with the demolition progress. They've
- 9:31Speaker 6: torn down walls and ceilings and light fixtures and you
- 9:35Speaker 6: name it, they've.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Got rid of it.
- 9:37Speaker 6: And tomorrow we're going to celebrate the kickoff to the
- 9:42Speaker 6: design and the construction to make these twelve studio apartments
- 9:48Speaker 6: turn from dream to reality.
- 9:50Speaker 2: So what is it like in for those that haven't
- 9:52Speaker 2: been in there? What is it like now? As because
- 9:55Speaker 2: you say you're gonna have these studio apartments in there,
- 9:58Speaker 2: but what does it look like now? And they're trying
- 10:00Speaker 2: to describe.
- 10:00Speaker 4: That, Well, it's a big it's a big, giant open room.
- 10:04Speaker 4: Now that the building sits on the corner of Brooks
- 10:06Speaker 4: and Virginia Street, and as you said, right down the
- 10:09Speaker 4: street from us, right down the street on the corner
- 10:11Speaker 4: across from Charleston Blueprint, And that's a buff brick two
- 10:14Speaker 4: story building that Johnstone and gab Hart Law firm occupies
- 10:19Speaker 4: the first floor, but they're moving out to the end
- 10:21Speaker 4: of this month. They bought a house over. We bought
- 10:22Speaker 4: the building. We owned the building now and control the building.
- 10:26Speaker 4: And so the second floor is what we're modifying.
- 10:29Speaker 2: First.
- 10:29Speaker 4: We're going to put the twelve sober living apartments. Later
- 10:32Speaker 4: in another next year, we'll we'll work on the downstairs
- 10:37Speaker 4: part and we'll create a community center that's going to
- 10:40Speaker 4: be recovery oriented and it'll also house our administrative offices
- 10:45Speaker 4: and we'll do our addiction counseling and we'll do other
- 10:50Speaker 4: things for the men in the in the downstairs, but
- 10:53Speaker 4: upstairs it's it's forty five hundred square feet upstairs, and
- 10:56Speaker 4: we're going to create these studio style apartments that will
- 10:59Speaker 4: allow we leave that treating men with dignity and respect.
- 11:03Speaker 4: We we get that in return. And we believe that
- 11:05Speaker 4: have an individual a place, a space to call your own,
- 11:09Speaker 4: even though you don't own it, it's a place that
- 11:11Speaker 4: you can go. It's a rescite that and it helps
- 11:14Speaker 4: people when they're in their in their in their I
- 11:16Speaker 4: guess their journey to get better from you.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Well, I would think too, because it's quote unquote theirs.
- 11:21Speaker 2: You know that they get and I mean they can
- 11:23Speaker 2: take some ownership and they can you know, decorate it
- 11:26Speaker 2: the way that they want. And you talked about these
- 11:28Speaker 2: men that are going out of the community and working.
- 11:30Speaker 2: They can come in and you know, save a little
- 11:32Speaker 2: money to get that you know, that picture on the
- 11:36Speaker 2: wall that they want or something like that.
- 11:38Speaker 4: Yeah, affordable housing is a baseline. John and I were
- 11:41Speaker 4: discussing that before we came in in the green room,
- 11:43Speaker 4: that affordable housing or a place to live is a
- 11:47Speaker 4: baseline for recovery homeless people. Cannot recover. They can't. I
- 11:52Speaker 4: mean they can if they really are motivated. But when
- 11:55Speaker 4: when you have a place to live, then you can
- 11:59Speaker 4: take advantage of the services that are available, the ancillary
- 12:02Speaker 4: services with our recovery partners like Westvirginia Health Right and
- 12:06Speaker 4: Jobs and Hope and the different people that help people
- 12:09Speaker 4: get their their CPS cases worked out, to get their
- 12:12Speaker 4: driver's licenses back. We have oral health partners helped get
- 12:15Speaker 4: their teeth fixed, and we have to do all sorts
- 12:17Speaker 4: of things besides just sober living.
- 12:19Speaker 2: It's a program that we operate. But Dave Island showing
- 12:22Speaker 2: five dye line is brown to apart by your hometown
- 12:24Speaker 2: baseball chief, the Charleston dirty Birds. We're already talking about
- 12:28Speaker 2: baseball over at Gomart Ballpark. Now'd be a good time
- 12:30Speaker 2: to get your season tickets, merchandise and more. Visit dirty
- 12:33Speaker 2: birds baseball dot com. So this ribbon cutting or the groundbreaking,
- 12:37Speaker 2: I guess or is going to be tomorrow ten thirty,
- 12:40Speaker 2: all right, But you've also got some other big things
- 12:42Speaker 2: that's kind of pruising your social media, and you've got
- 12:45Speaker 2: some fundraisers coming up, right, and we can talk about
- 12:47Speaker 2: that as we get a little bit closer, but just
- 12:49Speaker 2: got a big event coming up in March.
- 12:50Speaker 4: I think I saw that, yes, sir, Yeah, March the
- 12:52Speaker 4: twenty third at the Clay Center. We're going to have
- 12:55Speaker 4: chef Paul Smith is going to be the cater with
- 12:59Speaker 4: ten ten and he's going to also talk at our
- 13:02Speaker 4: at our fundraiser. He's a person in.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Recovery and it's been very very public about.
- 13:07Speaker 4: That he has and and and it's been motivational to
- 13:10Speaker 4: a lot of our men. And I want to say
- 13:13Speaker 4: something too about the men that we have that have
- 13:15Speaker 4: we've we've the money that we get to help our
- 13:18Speaker 4: men that we paid for the demolition. One of our
- 13:21Speaker 4: men is the name Aaron Natto, and he has a
- 13:24Speaker 4: little small remodeling company that he he hires men that
- 13:27Speaker 4: from our program. And so the money that they pay
- 13:31Speaker 4: us we return to them. Basically, uh we regenerate money
- 13:36Speaker 4: or turn it back to the men and to help them,
- 13:39Speaker 4: uh you know, to get along.
- 13:41Speaker 2: It helps us.
- 13:41Speaker 4: So they Aaron was really good at doing getting the
- 13:44Speaker 4: demo work done, and and it's it's a it's it's
- 13:47Speaker 4: kind of a cool thing that we can that they
- 13:49Speaker 4: can see the progress and they can see the place
- 13:51Speaker 4: that they may live.
- 13:52Speaker 2: One day again. It goes back into the what we
- 13:53Speaker 2: talked about with the with the apartments. It's a sense
- 13:56Speaker 2: of pride that they have that I built that. All right,
- 13:59Speaker 2: give us a detail about tomorrow again, John.
- 14:01Speaker 6: Ten thirty kick off at ten thirty. We'll get over
- 14:05Speaker 6: there at eleven twenty three Virginia Street East and have cookies,
- 14:10Speaker 6: water coffee. Fellowship and Dave, I really appreciate you mentioning
- 14:17Speaker 6: this upcoming fundraiser for Kanah Valley Fellowship Home. If folks
- 14:22Speaker 6: in Charleston have an opportunity, they want to see men succeed,
- 14:26Speaker 6: men with addiction issues succeed, then contributing to this, to
- 14:33Speaker 6: this wonderful organization will help make that happen.
- 14:36Speaker 2: And we'll have have you guys on to talk about
- 14:39Speaker 2: this specific fundraiser that you're doing in March. Where can
- 14:42Speaker 2: people learn more about your organization and social media websites
- 14:44Speaker 2: anything like that.
- 14:45Speaker 4: We're on Facebook and we there's some videos, some reels
- 14:49Speaker 4: and stuff on Facebook and KVFH dot org. That's our
- 14:53Speaker 4: initials Kanaha Valley Fellowships Fellowship Home. So KVFH dot org.
- 14:59Speaker 4: You can find at and you can find more about us,
- 15:02Speaker 4: and there's a lot of good information.
- 15:04Speaker 2: And should people reach out, what's the best way If
- 15:06Speaker 2: somebody has somebody that needs help and wants more information
- 15:10Speaker 2: about the program, or a family member, what's the best
- 15:12Speaker 2: way to go about that.
- 15:13Speaker 4: They can call us directly at three oh four three
- 15:16Speaker 4: four two eight zero five to one. They can access
- 15:19Speaker 4: the information on our website. They can contact us on Facebook.
- 15:23Speaker 4: They can The application for admission is on the is
- 15:29Speaker 4: on on actually on our website. So it's a tab
- 15:33Speaker 4: and it takes about maybe six or seven minutes to
- 15:36Speaker 4: fill out, and it comes directly to my computer and
- 15:39Speaker 4: then we print them off and then we do we
- 15:41Speaker 4: interview everybody. We talk to people that apply right now,
- 15:44Speaker 4: there's such a bikelog. I mean, I have men that
- 15:46Speaker 4: need to get in that are kind of There are
- 15:50Speaker 4: other people that are doing the work we do.
- 15:51Speaker 2: I don't want to discount.
- 15:52Speaker 4: Sure what other people do, but we feel like we're
- 15:55Speaker 4: the best and people want to get in because.
- 15:56Speaker 2: We are that we are the best.
- 15:58Speaker 4: But there's there's a movement in here, a recovery movement
- 16:01Speaker 4: in West Virginia that is really really positive. We have
- 16:03Speaker 4: a lot of good things going on our legislature supports us,
- 16:07Speaker 4: our community leaders, our mayor, our county commission particularly supports
- 16:11Speaker 4: us in the United Way. All a lot of organizations
- 16:14Speaker 4: support what we do, and it's a wee thing.
- 16:17Speaker 2: We get better.
- 16:18Speaker 4: We get better as a community, in a state and
- 16:22Speaker 4: as Charleston, West Virginia.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Dick John, I appreciate you both being here. Thanks a lot.
- 16:25Speaker 2: We'll see you tomorrow then, Thanks a lot. Nine to

- 19:00Speaker 11: Hey, good morning, Thank you for having me on tell us.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Who Ted Bettener is? That's a really good question.
- 19:05Speaker 12: Uh.
- 19:05Speaker 11: Well, I grew up here on the west side of Charleston,
- 19:08Speaker 11: went to Jay Robbins, Stonewall Junior High School and Capitol
- 19:12Speaker 11: High school. Then I went to WVU later on, came
- 19:16Speaker 11: back after grad school and you know, made a life
- 19:20Speaker 11: here from my family, met my wife here. We have
- 19:23Speaker 11: two wonderful children, Lucy and Sid, and I coach sid
- 19:27Speaker 11: soccer team on the West side of Charleston. Go Foxes,
- 19:32Speaker 11: all right, little plug, yeah, a little plug for the
- 19:34Speaker 11: West Side Foxes. And uh, I'm an elder of my
- 19:37Speaker 11: church which is right across the street from you guys
- 19:40Speaker 11: at carl United Presbyterian Church, which I've been on session
- 19:44Speaker 11: there for a while. And uh uh you know of
- 19:49Speaker 11: joy sports activities and things like that, like the hunt
- 19:52Speaker 11: with my family in Greenborough County a lot. And uh,
- 19:55Speaker 11: you know, over the last couple of years, I've just
- 19:57Speaker 11: sort of seen the state in the our community sort
- 20:00Speaker 11: of going in a direction that wasn't preferred, and I'd
- 20:04Speaker 11: like to do something about that.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Okay, what do you see them as in going into
- 20:09Speaker 2: a direction that bothers you or troubles you.
- 20:12Speaker 11: Well, I think one thing that bothers me is the
- 20:14Speaker 11: lack of accountability at the state House and the lack
- 20:19Speaker 11: of public purpose there as well. And I think you know,
- 20:23Speaker 11: about a decade ago when the current leaders came into office.
- 20:30Speaker 11: You know, we were promised that if we just you know,
- 20:32Speaker 11: passed right to work, we got ritter prevailing wage, we
- 20:37Speaker 11: made big tax cuts, that we would be in the
- 20:40Speaker 11: land of milk and honey. And ten years later, we
- 20:43Speaker 11: can look at what's happened. We can see that West
- 20:46Speaker 11: Virginia has fewer jobs today then we did ten years ago,
- 20:50Speaker 11: fewer jobs in Kennall County then we did ten years ago.
- 20:53Speaker 11: We've lost about seventy five thousand people in our population. Meanwhile,
- 20:58Speaker 11: our electricity rates are up fishfty percent over that time period.
- 21:03Speaker 11: And now we're seeing cuts and healthcare, especially for state
- 21:06Speaker 11: workers who are on PIA. So a lot of those
- 21:10Speaker 11: factors are coming to play and I think for a
- 21:13Speaker 11: long time we just need to have some balance up
- 21:16Speaker 11: to the legislature. It's good to have all kinds of opinions.
- 21:18Speaker 3: You know.
- 21:19Speaker 11: One thing I'm really proud of is I try to
- 21:21Speaker 11: talk and work with everybody, and I think there's a
- 21:24Speaker 11: lot of value to having a diversity of opinions and
- 21:27Speaker 11: working on good legislation together in a bob partisan fashion.
- 21:31Speaker 2: And I'm hoping to bring that up to the legislature.
- 21:33Speaker 2: And it's the district seventeen. Talk about the district.
- 21:37Speaker 11: Yeah, the district starts in Saint Albans and it goes
- 21:41Speaker 11: through South Charleston, South Hills and Kanas City. Then it
- 21:44Speaker 11: goes right over the bridge there in Kanas City and
- 21:47Speaker 11: then goes down to Malden Pratt all the way down
- 21:53Speaker 11: to Cedar Grove. Then it goes all the way back
- 21:56Speaker 11: up to elk Few Quick Clendennon, systems Ville and comes
- 22:00Speaker 11: whipping back around.
- 22:01Speaker 2: So it's a very sort of it's that's a very
- 22:04Speaker 2: diverse district, I mean, and it's what always interests me
- 22:08Speaker 2: because you know, even though we're all West Virginians and
- 22:10Speaker 2: we're all kindall valley ends. Uh, the needs wants of
- 22:16Speaker 2: one of those areas you mentioned may not be the
- 22:17Speaker 2: same as the other. How do you how do you? Absolutely?
- 22:19Speaker 11: I think, well, I think for a long time we're
- 22:22Speaker 11: not actually listening to people in those districts. And I
- 22:24Speaker 11: will say right out the front, I think over the
- 22:27Speaker 11: last obviously the last decade, the Democrats in the state
- 22:30Speaker 11: have lost the trust of a lot of hard working
- 22:32Speaker 11: West Virginians and it's not gonna We're not going to
- 22:35Speaker 11: regain that trust by one election with me. But I
- 22:38Speaker 11: am going to try my hardest to listen to people
- 22:41Speaker 11: and to understand where they're coming from, and not to
- 22:44Speaker 11: belittle anybody, and to work with them on, you know,
- 22:48Speaker 11: addressing the issues that matter to them. So if it's
- 22:51Speaker 11: small businesses or families who are struggling to make ends meet,
- 22:56Speaker 11: or if it's a right to repair bill that people
- 22:58Speaker 11: are concerned about, I think directly going into that district
- 23:02Speaker 11: like clen dinner, especially in the world parts, and listening
- 23:04Speaker 11: to people. I mean, everybody knows the eastern side of
- 23:06Speaker 11: the county has been completely ignored, and I plan on
- 23:09Speaker 11: visiting all of those areas and going door to door
- 23:12Speaker 11: and listening to people and bringing that back because I think,
- 23:15Speaker 11: you know, for far too long we just haven't been
- 23:18Speaker 11: able to do that. And whether you're a Democrat, Republican
- 23:21Speaker 11: or independent, we have a lot more in common than
- 23:24Speaker 11: what devised us. And I think social media, when you're
- 23:27Speaker 11: alone at home and you feel like, you know, it
- 23:30Speaker 11: really can make you angry at people. But it's a
- 23:32Speaker 11: lot harder to be angry when you're talking one on
- 23:34Speaker 11: one of Yeah talking amazing how that works. So that's
- 23:37Speaker 11: why I wish we could go back just listening to radio.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Amen. Sometimes I wonder if the Internet was a mistake.
- 23:43Speaker 2: I think it's a passing fad. I'll be honest with you.
- 23:45Speaker 2: I think though I'd say that in just you said
- 23:49Speaker 2: that the that in some ways you feel that maybe
- 23:52Speaker 2: the Democrats had lost some of the trust of the people.
- 23:56Speaker 11: Why do you say that, I think for I mean
- 23:58Speaker 11: for several reasons. I mean over the last several decades.
- 24:01Speaker 11: You know, government is about competency, about bringing the goods
- 24:06Speaker 11: to the people, so people feel a difference in their
- 24:08Speaker 11: daily life from what you have done. And during that time,
- 24:12Speaker 11: we did things like privatize workers comp we did huge
- 24:17Speaker 11: business tax cuts. When Governor Mansion was an act, it
- 24:20Speaker 11: was in the legislature when he's a governor, and nonehing
- 24:26Speaker 11: perspired from that. Nothing happened, and we were promised, oh,
- 24:29Speaker 11: if we just do this, it'll keep happening. And I
- 24:32Speaker 11: think those false promises. You know, you lose people's trust
- 24:36Speaker 11: when you don't run government efficiently, accountable, and have competency
- 24:40Speaker 11: in government to really carry out the mission, and you
- 24:44Speaker 11: build it to fail. It really disappoints a lot of
- 24:47Speaker 11: people and it says to them, well, government's not working
- 24:50Speaker 11: and corporations aren't doing much for me. The nonprofit sector
- 24:54Speaker 11: is not doing much for me. So it's going to
- 24:55Speaker 11: take a long time to build that trust. Because institutional
- 24:59Speaker 11: trust right now is that its lowest point.
- 25:01Speaker 2: That's true. I can remember.
- 25:02Speaker 11: No one believes anybody, no one. It feels like anybody
- 25:05Speaker 11: is doing anything. And that's the one thing this campaign
- 25:08Speaker 11: is about. Is about reaching people, listening to people, not judging,
- 25:13Speaker 11: and realizing that we just have so much more in
- 25:15Speaker 11: common if we sit down and talk to one another
- 25:17Speaker 11: and we might not agree on everything. That's not about that,
- 25:20Speaker 11: but it's about not being condescending. It's about not getting
- 25:23Speaker 11: wrapped up in identity politics, about the tribe that you're in,
- 25:27Speaker 11: and about concentrating on what's best for West Virginia.
- 25:31Speaker 2: This is District seventeen.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Again.
- 25:32Speaker 2: We're talking to Ted Beatner, who is a Democrat candidate
- 25:35Speaker 2: for states in a District seventeen. And that seat is
- 25:37Speaker 2: the seats currently home with Tom Takubo and Charnock right, yeah,
- 25:41Speaker 2: and Charlotck. Okay, so this is the that's the seat
- 25:43Speaker 2: you would be running forward heart Yeah, this is the
- 25:44Speaker 2: unexpired the unexpired to Okay, just want to make just
- 25:47Speaker 2: want to make clear on that. What's your campaign style
- 25:50Speaker 2: going to be?
- 25:50Speaker 10: Like?
- 25:50Speaker 2: What do you plan on doing? You talked about listening
- 25:54Speaker 2: to people once everybody can walk safely outside. Again, what
- 25:59Speaker 2: do you what your your door to door kind of guy?
- 26:02Speaker 2: You're gonna do some meet the candidate's type events? What
- 26:05Speaker 2: would you like to do all the above?
- 26:07Speaker 11: I think government works best when it's closest to the people,
- 26:11Speaker 11: and that means listening and talking to them. There's a lot,
- 26:13Speaker 11: don't get wrong, there's a lot of frustration out there
- 26:16Speaker 11: and a lot of people have just tuned things out,
- 26:19Speaker 11: you know. And I think going door to door, meeting
- 26:22Speaker 11: with the elected officials all over this district, meeting with
- 26:26Speaker 11: the city council folks that are here, meeting with community leaders,
- 26:30Speaker 11: meeting especially with small businesses that are up Campbell's Creek,
- 26:34Speaker 11: that are in Sissonsville, that are in Kanos City and
- 26:38Speaker 11: other areas. It's vastly important because I watched that it
- 26:42Speaker 11: took almost like two and a half years to fix
- 26:44Speaker 11: mccorklill Avenue.
- 26:46Speaker 2: You know, we built the new River Gorge Bridge in
- 26:48Speaker 2: less than three years.
- 26:50Speaker 11: I think today that might take twenty years because of
- 26:53Speaker 11: how inefficient things are working. So I think bringing that back,
- 26:57Speaker 11: realizing that there is somebody there fighting for listening to you.
- 27:01Speaker 11: But it's going to take a long process to do that,
- 27:05Speaker 11: and it's not going to happen in just this year
- 27:07Speaker 11: with me running or anything like that. But I hope
- 27:09Speaker 11: we can begin that process to listen to the people
- 27:14Speaker 11: and to build that trust back.
- 27:17Speaker 2: If you are elected, Ted, you know the numbers, they
- 27:21Speaker 2: are not a whole lot of Democrats in the State
- 27:22Speaker 2: House right now. You're running for the Senate, you know,
- 27:24Speaker 2: not a lot there, certainly not a lot in the House.
- 27:27Speaker 2: If you are elected, you're not going to see a
- 27:31Speaker 2: lot of fellow D's there. I mean, maybe you will
- 27:34Speaker 2: because there's a lot on the ballot, okay, but as
- 27:35Speaker 2: of right now, if you were elected today, there's not
- 27:37Speaker 2: a lot. How do you plan on having those conversations
- 27:40Speaker 2: when you are definitely when the Republicans have a super
- 27:43Speaker 2: duper majority, how do you plan on having those conversations?
- 27:48Speaker 11: Well, I mean, I think I will tell you too. Like,
- 27:51Speaker 11: up until a couple months, you know, a couple of
- 27:53Speaker 11: months ago, I was a registered independent and I actually
- 27:57Speaker 11: you know, came into the Democratic Party again because I
- 28:00Speaker 11: think that I felt a duty to help capture what
- 28:05Speaker 11: originally the party was about, which was standing up for
- 28:09Speaker 11: working people. I think it's drifted far too much into
- 28:13Speaker 11: academia and the professional class and not really gone back
- 28:18Speaker 11: to its roots in working class West Virginians. So my
- 28:22Speaker 11: hope is to work with legislators and all kinds of policies.
- 28:25Speaker 11: And I've had a long track record of being at
- 28:28Speaker 11: the Capitol when I was at the West Virginia cent
- 28:30Speaker 11: around buzzing policy, we worked with Republicans and Democrats all
- 28:34Speaker 11: the time and all.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Types of bills.
- 28:35Speaker 11: We passed a little bill to expand unemployment insurance for
- 28:39Speaker 11: when people lost their jobs that they could get half
- 28:42Speaker 11: they could be put on part time unemployment and be
- 28:46Speaker 11: part time at their job until things got better at
- 28:49Speaker 11: the small business and they could hire them back.
- 28:51Speaker 2: I mean, there's a mirroad of policies.
- 28:54Speaker 11: We all think that we should get cell phones out
- 28:55Speaker 11: of schools, that we shouldn't be teaching just using eads.
- 29:01Speaker 11: We all believe that we need to work on literacy
- 29:04Speaker 11: in math in England, in writing at school, Like if
- 29:08Speaker 11: you can't graduate high school with being proficient in those things,
- 29:12Speaker 11: there's a serious problem. And that's not happening right now.
- 29:15Speaker 11: We've seen really good education reform in Mississippi Alabama, and
- 29:20Speaker 11: I know a lot of the Republican legisters are very
- 29:22Speaker 11: interested in looking at those things. There's just a whole
- 29:25Speaker 11: array of issues that are you know, I try not
- 29:28Speaker 11: to look at any issue as partisan per se, and
- 29:31Speaker 11: I don't really want to engage in that partisan activity.
- 29:34Speaker 11: At What I want to do is try to get
- 29:36Speaker 11: things done and I'll work with everybody. I think I
- 29:40Speaker 11: have a long track record of doing that as well.
- 29:42Speaker 2: When you look at the current makeup of the legislature,
- 29:47Speaker 2: despite the fact and this is the house, I know
- 29:48Speaker 2: y're running percentate. But you know, we heard there was
- 29:51Speaker 2: a press conference they said, you know, we're going to
- 29:53Speaker 2: kind of shy away from some of the social issues
- 29:55Speaker 2: and we want to focus on this. Well, you know,
- 29:57Speaker 2: we're already seeing these things brought up Charlie kirk Day
- 30:01Speaker 2: and and uh and a lot of different things. Bibles
- 30:06Speaker 2: and I'm not saying essentially a bad thing. I'm just
- 30:08Speaker 2: saying that's kind of not what the original message was
- 30:11Speaker 2: the Bible in the school and so on and so forth.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Where are you on on on social issues?
- 30:20Speaker 11: Well, I think, first of all, Rose, I don't believe
- 30:22Speaker 11: in I believe in the Constitution, freedom of speech and equality,
- 30:27Speaker 11: and that we all have those fundamental rights. Uh So,
- 30:31Speaker 11: you know, it depends on whose parties in power whether
- 30:34Speaker 11: we believe in free speech sometimes, and that's gone back
- 30:36Speaker 11: and forth a lot the last couple of years. Uh So,
- 30:39Speaker 11: when it comes to some of those issues, I fully
- 30:42Speaker 11: understand where people are coming from. When people have hesitancy
- 30:46Speaker 11: about uh, you know, gender affirming surgery, I totally understand
- 30:50Speaker 11: where people are coming from on those issues. When people
- 30:53Speaker 11: are questioning whether you know, uh, you know, men should
- 30:57Speaker 11: be in sports, I understand where they're coming from on
- 31:00Speaker 11: a lot of those issues. And I think not throwing
- 31:03Speaker 11: names at people who are just trying to figure those
- 31:06Speaker 11: things out, because a lot of this stuff is very
- 31:08Speaker 11: contested territory and people are coming from good places on
- 31:12Speaker 11: a lot of it, and I think it's up to
- 31:14Speaker 11: us to help have that dialogue and that discussion so
- 31:18Speaker 11: we can focus what's really important here in West Virginia.
- 31:21Speaker 11: Because when I talk to most people, what they care
- 31:23Speaker 11: about more is what's happening at the supermarket than they
- 31:26Speaker 11: care about what's happening with the stock market, or.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Any of these social issues. Talking to Ted Bettner. Now
- 31:31Speaker 2: that last name may sound familiar to people. Your family's
- 31:35Speaker 2: got a service of a history of service in public service,
- 31:38Speaker 2: right Yeah.
- 31:39Speaker 11: My father was in the in the state legislature I
- 31:42Speaker 11: think about sixteen years.
- 31:43Speaker 2: But yet you still want to do this. I know,
- 31:45Speaker 2: I think I need to get my head examined. That's
- 31:47Speaker 2: what I was saying earlier.
- 31:48Speaker 11: But you know, one of my favorite memories was going
- 31:50Speaker 11: up to the Capitol all the time as a kid
- 31:52Speaker 11: and just being inspired by what a lot of policymakers
- 31:56Speaker 11: were doing. I mean, one of my favorite memories was
- 31:58Speaker 11: being on my dad's shoulder when Jesse Jackson came here,
- 32:03Speaker 11: and I just remember getting up on our shore like
- 32:05Speaker 11: preach brother.
- 32:06Speaker 3: You know.
- 32:07Speaker 11: It's just one of those little memories I had. I
- 32:09Speaker 11: met Arnold Schwarzenegger when he came here, and Muhammad Ali
- 32:12Speaker 11: came to the Capitol. Those are some of my heroes
- 32:15Speaker 11: from childhood. So I have really fond memories of that,
- 32:19Speaker 11: and I just I feel urging to, you know, get
- 32:21Speaker 11: in public service and deliver for the people.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Do you have a website or social media or anything.
- 32:28Speaker 2: We're working on that right now. Okay, all right, I
- 32:30Speaker 2: do this with every candidate we have ted what we
- 32:32Speaker 2: call it the Final thirty, and it's not actually timed
- 32:35Speaker 2: or anything like that. But why should someone vote for
- 32:37Speaker 2: Ted Bettner, Democratic State Senate District seventeen.
- 32:40Speaker 11: I think if you're interested in having someone in office
- 32:43Speaker 11: that believes in accountability, public service and bringing together people
- 32:49Speaker 11: to do what's right for West Virginia, to be bipartisan
- 32:53Speaker 11: and nonpartisan at the same time, and who feels like
- 32:57Speaker 11: the state is maybe moving into the wrong direction on
- 33:00Speaker 11: a host of issues, and that the legislature would benefit
- 33:04Speaker 11: by having somebody an office who cares deeply about working
- 33:08Speaker 11: families in this state and puts their interest first above
- 33:12Speaker 11: large out of state corporations who tend to dominate the
- 33:15Speaker 11: process up at the capitol. I think you would try to,

- 37:36Speaker 2: That area is incredibly boring. Some parks and trails would
- 37:40Speaker 2: be nice, but I bet the tweakers and litterers would
- 37:43Speaker 2: destroy them. Good old Sissonville. That's a text right now.
- 37:47Speaker 2: I tell you the unofficial mayor of Cistonville, Delegate Dan
- 37:51Speaker 2: of Ferrell, would not appreciate that text. I'm just saying
- 37:55Speaker 2: Texas not knocking this man, Dave. But all you hear
- 37:58Speaker 2: it's the same thing from every politician. I believe you
- 38:01Speaker 2: have to be out talking, meeting people and paying attention
- 38:04Speaker 2: to their needs. Then after their election is over, you
- 38:07Speaker 2: never hear from any of them. Again. Our current reps
- 38:10Speaker 2: in DC never even have a town hall, says a
- 38:14Speaker 2: tanks term. You know, I understand that sentiment, and you're right. However,
- 38:21Speaker 2: I will say this to kind of play devil's advocate here.
- 38:24Speaker 2: One of the reasons why some of our delegations, and
- 38:28Speaker 2: it's not just a West Virginia thing, they don't want
- 38:32Speaker 2: to have town halls, is because they see what's going
- 38:35Speaker 2: on at other town halls across the country. Safety issues,
- 38:39Speaker 2: whether it's Republican or Democrat. I mean if people at
- 38:42Speaker 2: a town and I like to think that West Virginians
- 38:44Speaker 2: are a little bit more respectable than that. We don't
- 38:46Speaker 2: have a lot of the problems here. Actually we have
- 38:49Speaker 2: none that we have in other areas. I would like
- 38:52Speaker 2: to think that if a Senator, Capitol, Congressman More, Congressman Miller,
- 38:56Speaker 2: Senator Justice had a town hall, that West Virginians that
- 38:59Speaker 2: even disagree with them would show up to have their
- 39:04Speaker 2: concerns heard. I would like to think about that, or
- 39:07Speaker 2: i'd I'd like to think that way and think that
- 39:09Speaker 2: everything would go smoothly. But last week in Minnesota, we
- 39:13Speaker 2: just had a representative who was attacked. And I don't
- 39:15Speaker 2: care how you feel about Representative Omar. She doesn't deserve
- 39:18Speaker 2: to be attacked, nor does a Republican. If it were
- 39:21Speaker 2: Republicans standing there, I'd say the same thing. So I
- 39:25Speaker 2: understand from a safety standpoint why they don't want to
- 39:29Speaker 2: have them, but I also say that's not the way
- 39:32Speaker 2: we do things primarily here in West Virginia. I would
- 39:36Speaker 2: say that, so again, you know, kind of as I
- 39:39Speaker 2: tend to do, kind of riding the fence in check
- 39:42Speaker 2: says The Day the Music Died February third, nineteen fifty nine,
- 39:47Speaker 2: rock and roll lost three of its brightest stars. Small
- 39:49Speaker 2: plane crashed in Iowa, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Allen's JP, the
- 39:53Speaker 2: Big Bopa Richardson lawng with pilot Roger Peterson. The tragedies
- 39:57Speaker 2: later immortalized in the Day of the Music Died domin
- 40:00Speaker 2: McLean song American Pie sixty seven years ago. Today and
- 40:04Speaker 2: a follow up text to that number three, the world
- 40:07Speaker 2: has lost another legend. Chuck Negron, one of the founding
- 40:09Speaker 2: members of Three Dog Knight, passed away early today at
- 40:12Speaker 2: his home in California. He was eighty three years old.
- 40:15Speaker 2: Nineteen seventy one. I was talking to a radio friend
- 40:17Speaker 2: of mine earlier today nineteen who's on the radio in
- 40:20Speaker 2: the early nineteen seventies, nineteen seventy one, you could not
- 40:23Speaker 2: go anywhere. I don't remember nineteen seventy one, by the
- 40:25Speaker 2: way I was born, but I don't remember. It couldn't
- 40:28Speaker 2: go anywhere that you didn't hear the song Joy to
- 40:30Speaker 2: the World, which, by the way, I want that play.
- 40:32Speaker 2: My wife knows that song will be played at my funeral.
- 40:34Speaker 2: I'm not planning it, all right, just say you no,
- 40:36Speaker 2: even though I got some sickness going. I'm not planning
- 40:38Speaker 2: it or anything, but I'm saying that's I want that
- 40:40Speaker 2: song played at my funeral. Song written by Hoyd Axton.
- 40:43Speaker 2: By the way, just in case you didn't know, high
- 40:47Speaker 2: school basketball weather permitting, of course, will be on your
- 40:50Speaker 2: airwaves tonight here in WCCHS. We have coverage of South
- 40:52Speaker 2: Charleston taken on hurricane tonight here in WCHS. Tex says,
- 40:56Speaker 2: if you want Cistinville votes, pronounce the town correctly. It's
- 40:59Speaker 2: not Siville, it's not plural. Sends the texture. Marshall Day

- 41:32Speaker 2: o six, and just to be fair, just so you know,
- 41:34Speaker 2: tomorrow is WVU Day at the Capitol Texas. When it
- 41:40Speaker 2: comes to gender affirming care, you know where people are
- 41:42Speaker 2: coming from. Would that be common sense? Sends the texture
- 41:50Speaker 2: Texas strange. There are a lot of similarities between Charlie
- 41:54Speaker 2: Kirk and Martin Luther King Junior. Both faith based men,
- 41:57Speaker 2: both were for nonviolent protesting. Both preach tolerance an acceptance.
- 42:01Speaker 2: But for some reason, Democrats seem to have a problem
- 42:03Speaker 2: with having a Charlie Kirk Day here. MLK Day is federal,
- 42:07Speaker 2: but that's not says a texture. You know, I've read
- 42:11Speaker 2: a lot about this Charlie Kirk Day. I'll be honest
- 42:14Speaker 2: with you, because I am in the world of media.
- 42:16Speaker 2: I had heard of Charlie Kirk. I couldn't tell you
- 42:18Speaker 2: a single thing about him until tragically. I don't want
- 42:21Speaker 2: anybody to ever lose their life for anything, Okay, In
- 42:24Speaker 2: that respect, I was aware of Charlie Kirk. I was not.
- 42:28Speaker 2: I won't say I was a fan or I wasn't
- 42:29Speaker 2: a fan. I didn't know anything about him until after
- 42:32Speaker 2: he was tragically tragically killed. But I will say this
- 42:40Speaker 2: and if this makes me sound super liberal that I apologize.
- 42:45Speaker 2: I'm not. I'm more independent. Not a good look for
- 42:51Speaker 2: West Virginia to have a Charlie Kirk day months after
- 42:54Speaker 2: doing away with June tenth. Just I'm a pr guy.

- 48:05Speaker 2: Bad Bunny, of course the featuring act at the actual

- 48:14Speaker 2: the act that a lot of people will be going
- 48:15Speaker 2: to Facebook to complain about. I, for one, use the
- 48:20Speaker 2: halftime portion of the show to reload on beer and snacks,
- 48:22Speaker 2: so I couldn't care less of at the halftime shows.
- 48:24Speaker 2: Haven't watched in years, and I'm also fifty five, which
- 48:27Speaker 2: means I'm way out of the demo for something called
- 48:29Speaker 2: Bad Bunny, who, by the way, is like the biggest

- 48:35Speaker 2: Not hating, just really not my thing. The all American

- 48:51Speaker 2: Kid said something like the other show will be some
- 48:54Speaker 2: guy in address scene in Spanish and I'll just stop
- 48:58Speaker 2: you right there. More likely Bad Money won't be singing
- 49:00Speaker 2: hardly anyone does that anymore, and it probably won't do
- 49:02Speaker 2: it at the Kid Rock Show either. They're all like
- 49:05Speaker 2: the lip syncing, which is another reason why I don't
- 49:07Speaker 2: watch it. But I have this this alternative show Kid Rock,
- 49:12Speaker 2: Bradley Gilbert and others head to head with the traditional
- 49:15Speaker 2: halftime show. Again, really, I only care about the game,
- 49:19Speaker 2: and it's just an excuse for a lot of people
- 49:21Speaker 2: to go to Facebook to complain about what.
- 49:23Speaker 10: Is this noise?
- 49:25Speaker 3: You know?
- 49:26Speaker 2: And they'll go on the other side to say the

- 49:31Speaker 2: whole thing to support my boss Dale Cooper though, Go Seahawks.
- 49:35Speaker 2: All right, let's go to the Capitol right now. Let's

- 49:49Speaker 2: Would you say, I said, who is bad Bunny? What
- 49:51Speaker 2: are you talking about? Well, that's what the majority of
- 49:54Speaker 2: America will be saying who is bad Bunny? And then
- 49:56Speaker 2: other people will say, well, he's like the biggest star
- 49:58Speaker 2: on the planet right now. And because because people of
- 50:01Speaker 2: our age don't know who he is doesn't mean he's
