- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter twenty two, The Country of the Quadlings. The four
- 0:05Speaker 1: travelers passed through the rest of the forest in safety,
- 0:08Speaker 1: and when they came out of its gloom, saw before
- 0:10Speaker 1: them a steep hill covered from top to bottom with
- 0:13Speaker 1: great pieces of rock. That will be a hard climb,
- 0:17Speaker 1: said the scarecrow, But we must get over the hill nevertheless,
- 0:21Speaker 1: so he led the way, and the others followed. They
- 0:24Speaker 1: had nearly reached the first rock when they heard a
- 0:27Speaker 1: rough voice cry out, keep back. Who are you, asked
- 0:31Speaker 1: the scarecrow. Then a head showed itself over the rock,
- 0:35Speaker 1: and the same voice said, this hill belongs to us,
- 0:38Speaker 1: and we do not allow anyone to cross it. But
- 0:42Speaker 1: we must cross it, said the scarecrow. We are going
- 0:45Speaker 1: to the country of the Quadlings, but you shall not,
- 0:49Speaker 1: replied the voice, and there stepped from behind the rock
- 0:53Speaker 1: the strangest man the travelers had ever seen. He was
- 0:57Speaker 1: quite short and stout, and had a big head, which
- 1:00Speaker 1: was flat at the top and supported by a thick
- 1:02Speaker 1: neck full of wrinkles. But he had no arms at all,
- 1:06Speaker 1: And seeing this, the scarecrow did not fear that so
- 1:10Speaker 1: helpless a creature could prevent them from climbing the hill.
- 1:13Speaker 1: So he said, I am sorry not to do as
- 1:16Speaker 1: you wish, but we must pass over your hill, whether
- 1:19Speaker 1: you like it or not, and he walked boldly forward.
- 1:24Speaker 1: As quick as lightning. The man's head shot forward, and
- 1:26Speaker 1: his neck stretched out unto the top of his head,
- 1:29Speaker 1: where it was flat struck the scarecrow in the middle,
- 1:32Speaker 1: and sent him tumbling over and over down the hill
- 1:35Speaker 1: almost as quickly as it came. The head went back
- 1:38Speaker 1: to the body, and the man laughed harshly as he said,
- 1:43Speaker 1: it isn't as easy as you think. A chorus of
- 1:47Speaker 1: boisterous laughter came from the other rocks, and Dorothy saw
- 1:50Speaker 1: hundreds of armless hammer heads upon the hillside, one behind
- 1:55Speaker 1: every rock. The lion became quite angry at the laughter
- 1:59Speaker 1: caused by the scarecrow's mishap, and giving a loud roar
- 2:03Speaker 1: that echoed like thunder, he dashed up the hill again,
- 2:07Speaker 1: a head shot swiftly out, and the great lion went
- 2:10Speaker 1: rolling down the hill as if he had been struck
- 2:13Speaker 1: by a cannon ball. Dorothy ran down and helped the
- 2:16Speaker 1: scarecrow to his feet, and the lion came up to her,
- 2:19Speaker 1: feeling rather bruised and sore, and said it is useless
- 2:23Speaker 1: to fight people with shooting heads. No one can withstand them.
- 2:28Speaker 1: What can we do, then, she asked, call the winged monkeys,
- 2:31Speaker 1: suggested the tin woodman. You still have the right to
- 2:34Speaker 1: command them once more. Very well, she answered, and putting
- 2:39Speaker 1: on the golden cap, she uttered the magic words. The
- 2:42Speaker 1: monkeys were as prompt as ever, and in a few
- 2:45Speaker 1: moments the entire band stood before her. What are your commands,
- 2:50Speaker 1: inquired the king of the monkeys, bowing low, Carry us
- 2:53Speaker 1: over the hill to the country of the quadlings, answered
- 2:56Speaker 1: the girl. It shall be done, said the king, and
- 3:00Speaker 1: at once the wing monkeys caught the four travelers and
- 3:03Speaker 1: Toto up in their arms and flew away with them.
- 3:06Speaker 1: As they passed over the hill, the hammerheads yelled with
- 3:09Speaker 1: vexation and shot their heads high in the air, but
- 3:13Speaker 1: they could not reach the wing monkeys, which carried Dorothy
- 3:15Speaker 1: and her comrades safely over the hill and set them
- 3:18Speaker 1: down in the beautiful country of the quadlings. This is
- 3:23Speaker 1: the last time you can summon us, said the leader
- 3:25Speaker 1: to Dorothy, so goodbye and good luck to you. Goodbye,
- 3:30Speaker 1: and thank you very much, returned the girl, and the
- 3:32Speaker 1: monkeys rose into the air. And were out of sight
- 3:35Speaker 1: in a twinkling. The country of the Quadlings seemed rich
- 3:38Speaker 1: and happy. There was field upon field of ripening grain,
- 3:41Speaker 1: with well paved roads running between, and pretty rippling brooks
- 3:45Speaker 1: with strong bridges across them. The fences and houses and
- 3:49Speaker 1: bridges were all painted bright red, just as they had
- 3:52Speaker 1: been painted yellow in the country of the Winkies and
- 3:55Speaker 1: blue in the country of the Munchkins. The quadlings them themselves,
- 3:59Speaker 1: who were short and fat and looked chubby and good natured,
- 4:02Speaker 1: were dressed all in red, which showed bright against the
- 4:05Speaker 1: green grass and the yellow grain. The monkeys had set
- 4:09Speaker 1: them down near a farmhouse, and the four travelers walked
- 4:12Speaker 1: up to it and knocked at the door. It was
- 4:14Speaker 1: opened by the farmer's wife, and when Dorothy asked for
- 4:17Speaker 1: something to eat, the woman gave them all a good dinner,
- 4:20Speaker 1: with three kinds of cake and four kinds of cookies,
- 4:23Speaker 1: and a bowl of milk for Toto. How far is
- 4:26Speaker 1: it to the Castle of Glinda, asked the child. It
- 4:31Speaker 1: is not a great way, answered the farmer's wife. Take
- 4:34Speaker 1: the road to the south and you will soon reach it.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Thanking the good woman, they started afresh and walked by
- 4:39Speaker 1: the fields and across the pretty bridges, until they saw
- 4:42Speaker 1: before them a very beautiful castle. Before the gates were
- 4:46Speaker 1: three young girls dressed in handsome red uniforms trimmed with
- 4:50Speaker 1: gold braid, and as Dorothy approached, one of them said
- 4:54Speaker 1: to her, why have you come to the south country
- 4:58Speaker 1: to see the good witch who rules here? She answered,
- 5:01Speaker 1: will you take me to her? Let me have your name,
- 5:05Speaker 1: and I will ask Glinda if she will receive you.
- 5:09Speaker 1: They told who they were, and the girl soldier went
- 5:12Speaker 1: into the castle. After a few moments, she came back
- 5:15Speaker 1: to say that Dorothy and the others were to be
- 5:17Speaker 1: admitted at once. The end of chapter twenty two,
