Ep. 179. Who is Husk in Marvel Comics?! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:11
Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks, and all the nerds in between.
• 0:14
This is Megan of the Vigilante vibes and I'm here with another
• 0:17
character breakdown free today and I'm continuing my coverage
• 0:20
of the underrated mutants of the Marvel Universe.
• 0:23
Today I want to talk about Husk. Who is Husk?
• 0:26
What is her deal? We're going to get into all of
• 0:29
it. Paige Guthrie, AKA Husk, first
• 0:32
made her appearance in Marvel Comics and Rahm annual #3 in
• 0:35
  1984. Meet Paige Elizabeth Guthrie,
• 0:39
the second of 10 kids from a family in Cumberland County,
• 0:42
Kentucky. Her dad, Thomas, passed away
• 0:45
when she was young. When her older brother Sam's
• 0:47
powers showed up, he joined the New Mutants as Cannonball, so
• 0:51
she is Cannonball's sister. Paige started dreaming of being
• 0:55
a hero too, even though she didn't have any powers yet.
• 0:58
She eventually discovered her ability to shed her skin and
• 1:01
reveal a new form underneath, but she kept it a secret.
• 1:05
That is until Sam and his EX4 teammate Tabatha Smith AKA
• 1:10
Boomer later Boom Boom. If you want to know more about
• 1:12
Boom Boom, just check my channel because I have an episode on her
• 1:15
too. Came to visit, Paige watched
• 1:19
helpless as they were kidnapped by Sienna Blaze, who was a
• 1:22
member of the Upstarts, a group who were competing to capture
• 1:26
young mutants in a game run by a telepath named the Game Master X
• 1:31
Force teamed up with the New Warriors, whose member Firestar
• 1:36
had also been taken. Paige secretly followed them,
• 1:40
transformed into an insect, and managed to convince the Games
• 1:43
Master to start training young mutants instead of killing them.
• 1:47
Her actions were key to getting her brother released.
• 1:50
Paige was bummed that Sam had joined the X Force instead of
• 1:54
the X-Men, which was her goal that whole time.
• 1:58
So I went into a little bit about how she went transformed
• 2:03
into a bug, but let's talk about her powers.
• 2:07
Husk can change the sub molecular structure of her body
• 2:11
by shedding her outer layer of skin.
• 2:13
She can turn into almost anything she wants, but she
• 2:16
usually changes into a form that looks like her normal self but
• 2:20
is made of different elements like stone, steel, or rubber.
• 2:24
These forms give her properties of whatever she changes into,
• 2:27
including increased strength, durability, and speed.
• 2:31
At her strongest, she's a class 10 with enough strength to lift
• 2:36
a bus. She can also become super
• 2:38
durable and has been able to deflect bullets.
• 2:42
She can even transform into a form that lets her move at
• 2:45
nearly subsonic speeds. It's easiest for her to
• 2:49
transform into forms that don't exceed her original body size.
• 2:52
Some of the things she's turned into include rocks, glass, gold,
• 2:57
steel, rubber, reflective surface, diamond, crystal,
• 3:02
silver, wood, and even scales. When she's stressed, her skin
• 3:07
can shed on its own, kind of like a snake, which is gross,
• 3:11
leaving her with a patchy look made of different materials.
• 3:15
She can also use her powers to blend into her surroundings like
• 3:18
a chameleon, or shed her skin instantly to protect herself
• 3:21
  from explosions. Her transformations usually
• 3:26
lasts about an hour unless she changes forms again.
• 3:29
She can change forms several times in a short period before
• 3:32
her normal skin returns. The skin she sheds keeps its
• 3:35
form and can be used as raw material if needed.
• 3:39
Which is also gross. Husk has a basic healing factor
• 3:45
that works by changing her form, but it only works on minor
• 3:49
injuries. Being forced to Husk before
• 3:51
she's ready can be very painful. In addition to her powers, Husk
• 3:55
is also a super genius with computers, which seems very
• 4:00
helpful. So that is her powers.
• 4:04
But let's talk about her as a person.
• 4:07
I gave a brief breakdown of her beginning.
• 4:10
Let's get more into it. Paige is 1 of 10 kids born to
• 4:14
Thomas and Lucinda Guthrie. Her mutant siblings are
• 4:17
Cannonball Joshua AKA Akaris, Melody AKA Arrow and Jebediah.
• 4:23
She has four sisters named Elizabeth Sissy, Joelle and one
• 4:27
who was not named. Her human sister.
• 4:30
Joelle got jealous of her mutant siblings and joined a mutant
• 4:33
hating group, but Husk and Cannonball convinced her to
• 4:35
leave. Paige joins the Xavier Institute
• 4:39
to learn how to use her powers. She later becomes a founding
• 4:42
member of Generation X and Co founder of the Mutantes Sans
• 4:47
Frontieres. She also joins the X-Men and
• 4:50
Banshees Militaristic X Corpse so she's been around team wise.
• 4:56
I feel like that sounded worse than it meant to but whatever.
• 5:01
While at the Xavier Institute, Paige gets into a relationship
• 5:04
with Jonathan. Starts more who is Chamber?
• 5:06
I will be making an episode about Chamber next.
• 5:09
Not next it's coming up. They also have a rocky of
• 5:13
relationship especially after he has a very public affair with a
• 5:17
pop star. Paige later gets involved with
• 5:19
Warren Worthington the third, who is Angel of course, and they
• 5:24
start a global mutant outreach program in Zanzibar together.
• 5:28
Paige was kidnapped by the Phalanx, A techno organic alien
• 5:31
race who wanted to learn how to absorb mutants.
• 5:34
She and the other kidnapped mutants were rescued by an ad
• 5:38
hoc X-Men team. After this, she became a
• 5:41
founding member of Generation X and took the code name Husk.
• 5:45
She trained with her teachers, Banshee and Emma Frost, and
• 5:48
became friends with her teammates, especially Chamber.
• 5:52
Husk, wanting to be a leader, worked very hard to improve her
• 5:55
skills and even tried to hide her southern accents, thinking
• 5:59
it made her sound uneducated, which isn't true by the way.
• 6:04
As someone from Mississippi, I appreciate a good southern
• 6:08
accent. In her first fight with the
• 6:10
vampire Implet, Husk was badly injured, but her teammate
• 6:13
Jubilee saved her life by husking her skin off.
• 6:17
After finding out about the mutant killing Legacy Virus,
• 6:21
Paige got drunk and impulsively kissed Chamber.
• 6:24
The surprise made him lose control of his powers and he
• 6:27
  accidentally destroyed the girl's dorm.
• 6:29
He took all the blame for it, of course.
• 6:33
Over the next few months, Paige struggled with her feelings for
• 6:35
Chamber, ignoring the interest of their teammates skin.
• 6:38
So it was not very scandalous, but it was very high school.
• 6:42
So let's talk about her time on Generation X and all that she's
• 6:46
done. So Generation X, they've fought
• 6:48
so many things. They fought in Ireland.
• 6:51
Omega, Red Black, Tom Cassidy. During a fight with Emplett,
• 6:55
Husk was briefly stuck in a painful half husked state when
• 6:59
the team faced the toad. Emma Frost was influenced by the
• 7:02
psychic villain Onslaught, causing her to telepathically
• 7:06
manipulate the students. Jubilee stepped up as leader,
• 7:09
which disappointed Husk, who wanted that role for herself.
• 7:13
When Onslaught seemingly killed many of the world's heroes, an
• 7:17
orphan named Franklin Richards came to the school.
• 7:20
Husk befriended him and helped him cope with his loneliness.
• 7:23
She took Chamber home for Thanksgiving, but they got into
• 7:26
a big fight and he left. She avoided him until they were
• 7:30
both captured by Black Tom Cassidy.
• 7:32
Husk was injured again, stuck into a painful state mid
• 7:36
transformation when a reality warper named Glorian granted the
• 7:42
students their wishes. Husk became Chambers girlfriend
• 7:45
until reality went back to normal.
• 7:48
Glorian then sent them to Los Angeles where they fought
• 7:51
Sentinels and Chamber apologized to her.
• 7:54
After fighting the Circus of Crime, a human girl named Tracy
• 7:59
Authier stole Husk's diary. Tracy came to the school, saw
• 8:03
all their adventures and promised to keep their secrets.
• 8:06
The team then fought the Fenris twins and Bianca Lanige and as
• 8:11
Guardian trolls, whom Husk made peace with by giving them some
• 8:15
of her Husk gold skin, which is just so gross.
• 8:19
She briefly went home to help her sick mother, then officially
• 8:22
broke up a chamber, feeling he was too distant.
• 8:25
Generation X then joined X-Men, who is Nate Gray, Nathaniel Gray
• 8:31
to fight the terrorist group Gene Nation.
• 8:34
The Massachusetts Academy started accepting human students
• 8:37
and the mutants had to wear masks while out on mission to
• 8:40
hide their identities. A human student named Tristan
• 8:43
Braun found out Paige was a mutant after she fought his dad.
• 8:47
Tristan blackmailed her into dating him, but they eventually
• 8:51
genuinely hit it off until he left the school.
• 8:54
Emma's sister Adrian Frost took over the school for a bit, and
• 8:58
the students helped the mercenary paladin fight the
• 9:02
Rising Suns in Madrapore. They defeated and PLED again,
• 9:06
even though he briefly controlled Husk.
• 9:09
When Adrian caused their teammate Sink's death, Husk felt
• 9:13
helpless and decided to focus on controlling her powers better.
• 9:17
  Generation X then battled Dracula.
• 9:20
The Dracula helped the New Warriors escaped Biohazard and
• 9:25
encountered A Sasquatch. So she has seen some stuff which
• 9:30
is it's crazy. Husk helped shut down an evil
• 9:35
House of corrections that was holding children hostage and she
• 9:39
  became friends with Chamber again.
• 9:42
She heard the school was closing down and with no clear path,
• 9:44
said goodbye to her friends and moved away to help a group of
• 9:47
  environmentalists, effectively disbanding Generation X.
• 9:52
Banshee soon recruited Paige into his new ex corpse, where
• 9:56
she and Jubilee stopped BLOB and Mystique from taking over the
• 9:59
group. Husk moved into the X Men's
• 10:02
Mansion, where her relationship with Chamber got even more
• 10:05
complicated after his public affair with a pop star and her
• 10:08
growing attraction to Archangel. Husk's interest in
• 10:12
environmentalism LED her to investigate corruption at
• 10:17
Archangel's company. She was almost killed, but
• 10:21
Archangel healed her and they started a romantic relationship.
• 10:24
She helped him get over the death of his former love,
• 10:27
Psylocke, who died from the virus after a bad fight with
• 10:30
Chamber. Husk was horrified when the
• 10:33
Church of Humanity crucified several mutants, including
• 10:37
Jubilee and Skin on the X Men's lawn, which that goes hard man.
• 10:43
Jubilee survived, but Skin did not.
• 10:47
After fighting the demon Azazel, Archangel suddenly broke up with
• 10:51
Paige. He she kept trying to get him to
• 10:54
talk, but he refused. While fighting racist humans in
• 10:58
Kentucky, he confessed that he was scared of losing her and
• 11:01
they got back together. They then started a global
• 11:04
mutant outreach program called the Mutantis Sons Frontieris in
• 11:09
Zanzibar. So one thing about Husk is that
• 11:12
she cannot quit her exes, which is wild, but we all know.
• 11:18
Don't you just move forward, don't go back.
• 11:22
That is my tip for you today. Husk along with her brothers Sam
• 11:27
and Jay were some of the few mutants left in the world after
• 11:30
M day. After an anti mutant extremist
• 11:33
name Reverend William Stryker killed Jay, Husk went home to
• 11:37
support her family. Sam stayed with the X-Men but
• 11:40
later came to visit, expressing his frustration before rushing
• 11:45
off. The X-Men briefly brought Husk
• 11:47
back to help fight invading aliens in California, and she
• 11:51
resumed her flirtations with Angel during that mission.
• 11:56
When the psychic vampire Celine resurrected an army of former
• 12:00
X-Men enemies, Husk joined the team to investigate a warning
• 12:04
from a resurrected psychic. They traveled to Muir Island and
• 12:09
a reality warping mutant named Proteus possessed her teammate
• 12:13
Blindfold and attacked the team. Husk and the others fought him
• 12:18
off, but he possessed each of them, even making Husk fight her
• 12:22
teammate Rogue. They didn't defeat him until
• 12:26
Magneto destabilized his energy. Husk later fought the Nimrod
• 12:32
Sentinels in San Francisco. She used a corrosive form to
• 12:36
fight them, but a robot nearly tore her apart.
• 12:40
During the Curse of Mutants event, vampires attacked San
• 12:44
Francisco. Jubilee was infected with a
• 12:47
vampire virus, then infected Wolverine as part of a plan by
• 12:51
their team leader Cyclops. When fighting the vampires, Husk
• 12:56
changed her hands into wooden spikes and took out several of
• 12:59
them before Wolverine knocked her out.
• 13:03
After the X-Men split, Husk sided with Wolverine and became
• 13:06
a teacher at the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning.
• 13:09
She started shedding her skin uncontrollably, but she still
• 13:13
used her powers to defend her students from the Hellfire Club.
• 13:18
She even destroyed a monster called the Ngari.
• 13:21
But her constant shedding and worsening mental state made her
• 13:25
think she'd been fired. So she quit and joined the
• 13:29
Hellfire Academy, where she worked as a librarian and fell
• 13:32
in love with Toad. Toad of all people.
• 13:37
When Wolverine's X-Men came to rescue their students, Husk
• 13:41
fought against her own Academy teammates.
• 13:43
After that, she sought to help control her powers and her
• 13:46
mental state. She then started working for
• 13:49
SHIELD in their non human resource department.
• 13:52
When the organization fell apart, she stayed behind.
• 13:55
When the villain Chameleon impersonated Deadpool and
• 13:59
attacked her, she teamed up with the real Deadpool and Spider Man
• 14:02
to defeat him alongside other mutants.
• 14:05
Husk opposed X-Men Nate Gray as he tried to remake the world.
• 14:11
He banished them into a different reality where Husk
• 14:14
taught agriculture to at the Summers Institute for higher
• 14:18
  Learning. They eventually returned to
• 14:20
their reality after X-Men was has realized his mistake.
• 14:25
Husk later lived in Krakowa RIP the mutant nation.
• 14:29
She joined Cyclops team to destroy Mother Mold, a machine
• 14:32
designed to create killer robots, before it could create
• 14:36
Nimrod. During the mission, both Husk
• 14:40
and Archangel was killed, but they were both brought back to
• 14:44
life on Krakoa by the Five, a group of mutants who could
• 14:48
combine their powers to resurrect fallen comrades.
• 14:52
They were both hailed as heroes for their bravery.
• 14:56
So that is Husk. That is page 2/3.
• 14:59
She, she has a huge resume, a thing she's done in the X-Men
• 15:05
world, and I would really like to see her be brought to live
• 15:08
  action. Just she's great.
• 15:11
Or at least in X-Men 97. I mean, she's so integrated in a
• 15:15
lot of the stories, so it'd be crazy not to.
• 15:19
As usual, I have comics for you to check out to get to know
• 15:24
Paige a little bit better. Generation X #5 through Seven.
• 15:30
  Generation X #23, Generation X #30 Wolverine and X-Men number
• 15:38
one through 4, but you can keep going to get more Husk material
• 15:42
in that run and X-Men legacy #231 to 233.
• 15:48
So I hope you enjoyed learning about Husk.
• 15:51
I hope you like what I had to say, and if you have any comic
• 15:56
  recommendations or other character recommendations,
• 15:59
please let me know in the comments.
• 16:00
With that being said, have a marvelous day.
