- 0:42Speaker 1: for first place in the Pacific Division. And we have
- 0:45Speaker 1: a lot to get to coming off a road trip
- 0:47Speaker 1: where they picked up five points out of a possible eight,
- 0:50Speaker 1: ending back to back in Pittsburgh and on Long Island.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Everett fits you al Koniski of course with us here

- 1:07Speaker 1: nine and five through twenty four games of this season,
- 1:11Speaker 1: goaltending and also a big question when it comes to
- 1:14Speaker 1: playing or not playing Connor McDavid and Leon dreich Seidel together,
- 1:20Speaker 1: plus a look at the Dallas Stars that we're coming
- 1:22Speaker 1: up to open a brief two game homestan Wednesday. It's

- 1:32Speaker 1: Additionally getting to the state of the Krack and defense,
- 1:35Speaker 1: some offensive concerns. Will also goaltending, which deserves a lot
- 1:39Speaker 1: of props, kudos, flowers, whatever you want to give them.
- 1:42Speaker 1: They have certainly help stabilize matters at this point. Plus
- 1:45Speaker 1: also your mail bag questions. You can find me on
- 1:49Speaker 1: Twitter and ex at Benton Underscore Micro taking those again
- 1:52Speaker 1: and we'll get to more of your reaction coming up
- 1:55Speaker 1: here in just a bit. A flashback to the four
- 1:57Speaker 1: game road trip. Opening in Detroit the back and fell
- 2:00Speaker 1: forward to but then at visions of a rebound in Chicago, the.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Dard hoops it up to the line we're held in
- 2:08Speaker 3: by Monteur. Monteur back to the blue line of shot tep.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Stools Brandon Monteur above. From the blue line, it's redirected
- 2:21Speaker 4: out in front and the Seattle.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Cricket are on the board.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Oscar Fisker mull Guard will leave the handshake line.
- 2:28Speaker 3: That will be his first goal in the National Hockey League.
- 2:34Speaker 5: Oscar Fisker moutguard right in front of Spencer Night and
- 2:37Speaker 5: it looks like it may have gone off him and
- 2:39Speaker 5: then ty Carcie yeah, into the back of the net.
- 2:43Speaker 5: But the point there is that it was a big
- 2:45Speaker 5: shot by Montour. A couple levels of screens in front,
- 2:49Speaker 5: Oscar Fisker Mollguard's one of them. Ty Carci is the other.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Here is Shane right again below the goal line. Cat
- 2:54Speaker 3: takes it away on the left wing side. Chris that
- 2:57Speaker 3: call over him Cat top.
- 3:00Speaker 6: It shoots ten scars, Shane right redirects the puck in
- 3:10Speaker 6: in front, has a.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Seattle cracking tie.
- 3:13Speaker 4: The game two two twelve forty seven to play in
- 3:17Speaker 4: the third.
- 3:18Speaker 5: Well much much with the ty cart Chak goal. It's
- 3:21Speaker 5: right out in front and he's waiting for the Spencer Night.
- 3:24Speaker 5: He gets his blade out as the Riker revenue shot
- 3:26Speaker 5: comes and hits the top of his His blade finds
- 3:29Speaker 5: the back of the net.
- 3:30Speaker 1: This game's tied.
- 3:31Speaker 3: It to Aston Marshmit far point, Evans walking to the
- 3:34Speaker 3: middle back hands it off to Marshmit. Now Montour takes
- 3:37Speaker 3: his turn. Montour left circle, Montrey back to Jayden, swords.
- 3:45Speaker 4: On the power flame, skins the cracket A three two
- 3:50Speaker 4: lead to eighteen to play.
- 3:52Speaker 5: In the third well, it starts with Mason marks from
- 3:54Speaker 5: up top, finding Montour jumping down the wall. Montour is
- 3:58Speaker 5: thinking shot the whole time, but he sees seventeen on
- 4:00Speaker 5: the back door where he loves to hang out. He
- 4:03Speaker 5: puts it right onto his tape in the back of
- 4:05Speaker 5: the net, cracking three Chicago tears.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Sidney Crosby left side. Now for Carlson down the slot.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Shot bluffs Sane Bye Gerbauer. He'll hold on im. Shane
- 4:16Speaker 3: turns away from many many ears.
- 4:18Speaker 7: This one flipped up the boards, knocked down by a Marchman.
- 4:21Speaker 3: But he gives it right back, and we'll steal it
- 4:23Speaker 3: right back.
- 4:23Speaker 6: Marchman fires scores, they said.
- 4:28Speaker 3: March Ben puts.
- 4:29Speaker 4: The cracket on the board, won nothing, eighteen thirty six
- 4:34Speaker 4: to play in the period. He was so excited when
- 4:37Speaker 4: he celebrated that he toe picked and the face planted
- 4:41Speaker 4: on the ice. I'm sorry for laughing, bush cracking on
- 4:44Speaker 4: the board and want nothing.
- 4:46Speaker 5: Well, it was Marshman that kept the puck in at
- 4:48Speaker 5: the offensive blue line there, kept it deep and then
- 4:51Speaker 5: hung around the top of the circles and got a
- 4:53Speaker 5: gift from the Penguins defenseman which was the buck and
- 4:57Speaker 5: shot from the top of the circles. Beats Het Bershov.
- 5:01Speaker 5: It's one oh.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Cracket on the left wing, gives it up to Mason
- 5:04Speaker 3: Mershman backside from an ear settles shoots.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Stoos Maddy Baneers from the right circle as he tucks
- 5:13Speaker 4: it up over the shoulder of Miroshav and in the
- 5:17Speaker 4: seattle cracket tie the game in the third two to two, seven.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Twenty four to go in regulation.
- 5:24Speaker 5: Well, it was everly in front of the net, had
- 5:25Speaker 5: dumb but tied up that gave Maddy Benier's space behind
- 5:28Speaker 5: them bottom of the circles over on that right side,
- 5:31Speaker 5: he got a fantastic feed from Marchman had all the
- 5:33Speaker 5: time and the day to roof it. This game's titles through.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Center left side over the blue line gets row to
- 5:39Speaker 3: the line Montor walks in shoots.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Stoos Montymnia in over time in Pittsburgh. It's a three
- 5:52Speaker 4: two seattle crack and win.
- 5:54Speaker 5: What a great feed that Mantra received just inside the
- 5:57Speaker 5: middle of the blue line of the offensive end. He
- 5:59Speaker 5: has tons of time get his space up. He beats
- 6:02Speaker 5: brushov low cracking win three two, bring on the funnel,
- 6:06Speaker 5: cakes right circle to the corner, shut right on to
- 6:09Speaker 5: cord in the gold crease.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Everybody collapses on him and the pod stays in the
- 6:16Speaker 4: blue pain.
- 6:18Speaker 3: The cord comes out clean on the other side. Al
- 6:21Speaker 3: Szekis couldn't find the puck. Shane Wright two on two
- 6:25Speaker 3: drops to Newman.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Across the cat and for a drive on the left side,
- 6:29Speaker 4: and that one handled and held by David Retta.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Anders Stevenson lost a face off Schaeffer left side, Barzel,
- 6:37Speaker 3: Schaeffer back to Barzel, Fanning on the shot. Barzel to
- 6:40Speaker 3: the high slot, sends it across.
- 6:42Speaker 4: One of same by towing the cord on Bawhormat goodness.
- 6:47Speaker 3: This one cleared all the way down the ice.
- 6:49Speaker 4: We're going to a shootout here on Long Island, Paul Mary,
- 6:53Speaker 4: Now for the Islanders, I'll marry alrighty.
- 6:58Speaker 3: It's the signal except the buck on the forehead. He's
- 7:01Speaker 3: got speed, left circle, far side, clus back to the middle.
- 7:05Speaker 8: Hey shot, he scores and the Islanders get the extra point.
- 7:12Speaker 8: They win this game one nothing in a shootouts.
- 7:16Speaker 1: So there you have it, the cracking getting five points
- 7:18Speaker 1: out of a possible eight after a four to two
- 7:21Speaker 1: loss at Detroit, bouncing back three to two win at Chicago,
- 7:25Speaker 1: three two overtime win at Pittsburgh, and then taking the
- 7:28Speaker 1: Islanders all the way into the shootout where they fell
- 7:31Speaker 1: one nothing. The final at Ubs Arena with Joined Decord
- 7:35Speaker 1: picking up his seventh career shutout and blank by David Ridick,
- 7:39Speaker 1: where the Kraken are still looking for their first win
- 7:41Speaker 1: in the second leg back to back situations. Right now,
- 7:45Speaker 1: it is a skid of seventeen consecutive games going back
- 7:49Speaker 1: to twenty twenty three to twenty four in that situation,
- 7:52Speaker 1: and certainly offense a big part of this. We'll talk
- 7:55Speaker 1: about this in a bit of course with Everett. Now
- 7:58Speaker 1: before they join us, here's a look at AHL Coachella Valley,
- 8:02Speaker 1: and let's just say they had a young defenseman who
- 8:05Speaker 1: was pretty familiar here with the Pacific Northwest and made
- 8:08Speaker 1: a big name for himself on the stage which reached
- 8:11Speaker 1: national levels.
- 8:12Speaker 7: Firebirds got the best of Owen Say in their first
- 8:15Speaker 7: matchup of the year back in late October, as Cayden
- 8:18Speaker 7: Hamill takes a penalty and Calgary goes to the power
- 8:21Speaker 7: plane before we get to the man advantage time for
- 8:25Speaker 7: Desert Texas keys.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Of the game.
- 8:27Speaker 7: But before we do that, we're gonna have a fight.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Caden Hamill dropped the clubs with alce come yea Edgar,
- 8:34Speaker 3: Cayden Hammel, you best be ready for.
- 8:37Speaker 9: This one waiting for the first plots of the time
- 8:41Speaker 9: star throws.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Are you not under tame?
- 8:51Speaker 9: That was a very entertaining stop fan me not something
- 8:54Speaker 9: he would expected from Caden Hammel.
- 8:56Speaker 3: But Outscandon Jolt got a pretty good bunch.
- 9:04Speaker 7: We'll go over to the dressing room.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Hopefully he's okay.
- 9:07Speaker 7: So how about that Caden Hamilt.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Taken down one of the.
- 9:13Speaker 5: Toughest guys in the American Hockey League.
- 9:15Speaker 7: Not only that, dropping mcgloves and saying, hey, let's go
- 9:18Speaker 7: out of the scrum.
- 9:19Speaker 9: Yeah, out of the scrum. And Alex Kallan is a
- 9:22Speaker 9: tough customer. Had a great colte with Travis Howell last
- 9:26Speaker 9: night Cayden Hamill does a phenomenal chopping standing up for
- 9:30Speaker 9: himself in that one.
- 9:31Speaker 1: How about that call from Evan Pivnick and Grant Fear
- 9:34Speaker 1: for the Firebirds broadcast side yep? Are you not entertained?
- 9:38Speaker 1: That fight by Caden Hammill went viral last night. Matter
- 9:41Speaker 1: of fact, it reads Sports Center as well. Caden Hamill's
- 9:45Speaker 1: the former Reverence Silver Tips defenceman fifth round draft pick
- 9:48Speaker 1: of a Kraken. But if you ask many, there's a
- 9:51Speaker 1: new set of Candaan Hammel which came out in that
- 9:53Speaker 1: fight taking on one of the toughest competitors in the
- 9:56Speaker 1: AHL and Alex Gallant of the Calgary Wrangler. Hammill had
- 10:01Speaker 1: no more than fifty six penalty minutes in his career
- 10:04Speaker 1: for the WHL slip between the Silver Tips and the
- 10:08Speaker 1: Kamloops Blazers, and then he is no stranger to dropping
- 10:12Speaker 1: the gloves. He did so from time to time in
- 10:14Speaker 1: his WHL career. It's a new level when you take
- 10:17Speaker 1: on a guy like Alex Gallant, and Hammill had the
- 10:19Speaker 1: upper hand in untilt that went down one fifty nine
- 10:23Speaker 1: into the game and was a precursor to an offensive slugfest.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Eventually Calgary won it in sudden depth overtime five four,
- 10:30Speaker 1: but the Firebirds had contributions all across the board. Edward Shallegh,
- 10:35Speaker 1: who was back from injury, got his first goal of
- 10:37Speaker 1: the season led the Firebirds. Also with Ty Nelson, each
- 10:40Speaker 1: had three point nights. Nelson had three assists on the
- 10:43Speaker 1: back end. Jr Avon, John Hayden and Ben Meyers also
- 10:48Speaker 1: scored a goal each for the Firebirds. Underhead coach Eric Laxtall,
- 10:52Speaker 1: Coachella Valley is right now eight five and three nineteen points,
- 10:57Speaker 1: eight back of first place Colorado in the Pacific Division
- 11:01Speaker 1: and led by Jagger Fercuses nineteen points in sixteen games.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Perhaps if he keeps us up, it could be a
- 11:07Speaker 1: matter of time before he earns his first call up
- 11:10Speaker 1: to the NHL. All right, Cracking are back home this
- 11:14Speaker 1: Wednesday again to game homestand we're opening up at Climate
- 11:17Speaker 1: Pledge Arena seven o'clock for the Kraken and Dallas Stars.
- 11:21Speaker 1: On the FM dial for the flagship Side ninety three
- 11:23Speaker 1: three KJRFM and all across the Global Credit Union Cracking
- 11:28Speaker 1: Audio Network airtime six thirty post game from Tom's watch bar.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Just like as well on Saturday, We're on the am
- 11:35Speaker 1: dial that day Sports Radio nine to fifty KJR and
- 11:38Speaker 1: again still across the Global Credit Union Cracking Audio Network
- 11:42Speaker 1: one pm at NA, going down at Climate Pledge Arena
- 11:46Speaker 1: for the Kraken and the Oilers twelve thirty airtime and
- 11:50Speaker 1: once again post game at times jumping in by the Witch.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Could it be back back and recap. Also have a
- 11:56Speaker 1: little bit of down time because for years must be
- 11:59Speaker 1: on Dallas. Good, I want to say, pointed this out
- 12:07Speaker 1: on radio the other day. Good time to bring him
- 12:10Speaker 1: in with al Kiniski as well, and at the right
- 12:14Speaker 1: time too, because Thanksgiving here, I think Fitz has got
- 12:17Speaker 1: family in town.
- 12:18Speaker 3: On top of that, I do my in law has
- 12:21Speaker 3: just got in this morning. My sister in law and
- 12:24Speaker 3: her partner are coming in on Wednesday. So it's gonna
- 12:27Speaker 3: be a packed house in the fifty household this week.
- 12:31Speaker 5: I'm gonna gonna have around the table Thursday.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Let's see, we'll start with two, four, six, seven, and
- 12:38Speaker 3: then we'll probably end with close to twelve or fourteen.
- 12:41Speaker 3: We're gonna have a dinner with the family and then
- 12:43Speaker 3: we'll bring uh, we'll bring some friends over later for dessert.
- 12:47Speaker 3: In a late football game.
- 12:48Speaker 1: All right, So who's cooking? Who's cooking?
- 12:51Speaker 3: Uh, that's gonna be a combination. I think my in
- 12:53Speaker 3: laws are going to handle most of it. My wife's
- 12:55Speaker 3: gonna make her mac and cheek. I'm gonna try my
- 12:58Speaker 3: hand in a few things. But I look over to
- 13:00Speaker 3: my left here and I have an entire whiskey bourbon
- 13:04Speaker 3: collection that I'm going to dive into as well. So yeah,
- 13:08Speaker 3: it's gonna be a fun day. Look at my chops.
- 13:11Speaker 3: I'm ready to go.
- 13:11Speaker 1: If there was one thing that we know about this
- 13:13Speaker 1: podcast space, all three of us here have our sauce
- 13:16Speaker 1: spots for good bourbon.
- 13:18Speaker 5: Oh absolutely, yep, yep, yes, is the answer anytime someone
- 13:25Speaker 5: mentions bourbon.
- 13:26Speaker 1: When's the last time that we all got together here
- 13:28Speaker 1: for this. I think it was at your beach house
- 13:29Speaker 1: el way up north. I think he had about a
- 13:32Speaker 1: good long line about roughly I want to say, fifteen bottles.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I was ready here to just take the phone out,
- 13:38Speaker 1: record it, and then just let it go. As far
- 13:41Speaker 1: as getting your secrets out to good bourbon.
- 13:43Speaker 5: Yeah, well, you know what, it's pretty easy. Just put
- 13:46Speaker 5: them all on the counter and handle glasses.
- 13:49Speaker 3: I have one rule in my house if you can
- 13:52Speaker 3: see it, you can have it.
- 13:53Speaker 5: That's about it.
- 13:54Speaker 1: So I got a relatively quiet household, I should say relatively.
- 13:58Speaker 1: There are two boys here in this in households, so
- 14:01Speaker 1: relatively quiet is basically the limit here of this. And
- 14:04Speaker 1: they're office school, no baseball practice for a week. Liam's
- 14:08Speaker 1: getting into basketball that won't start till next week as well.
- 14:11Speaker 1: So we're just trying to basically find enough time to
- 14:13Speaker 1: give them things to do. They're not bored, and they're
- 14:17Speaker 1: tearing the house down or tearing down the pantry, which
- 14:19Speaker 1: is also in our kitchen. But let's just go back
- 14:23Speaker 1: here and recap from this last week. I believe we
- 14:25Speaker 1: said last podcast, last episode of Cracking Weekly, would you
- 14:30Speaker 1: be okay? Is the bar set for five points out
- 14:34Speaker 1: of eight? Guess what? They got five points out of eight?
- 14:38Speaker 1: Win in Chicago, win in Pittsburgh, and enough to squeak
- 14:43Speaker 1: one point out at Ubs Arena on Long Island. So
- 14:47Speaker 1: here's the question, at this point of the season, with
- 14:51Speaker 1: us past a quarter pole and the Cracking right now
- 14:54Speaker 1: with a record as of today eleven five and six,
- 14:58Speaker 1: one point back at first place Anaheim, how satisfied are you?
- 15:02Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 15:02Speaker 5: I mean I think when you set expectations like that
- 15:05Speaker 5: and they're metter exceeded. Obviously, you have to be happy,
- 15:08Speaker 5: and you know, I remember last season talking to previous
- 15:11Speaker 5: coach Dan Bousma looking at the schedule and looking at
- 15:15Speaker 5: it in terms of chunks, And I like that approach
- 15:17Speaker 5: because whether you call it chunk a month of schedule
- 15:21Speaker 5: or the four game road trip that we just came
- 15:23Speaker 5: off of, I like looking at the in chunks to say,
- 15:26Speaker 5: what are your expectations there during that particular chunk, And
- 15:29Speaker 5: I think five out of eight it was an excellent
- 15:32Speaker 5: goal for the team that they hit it. I think
- 15:35Speaker 5: that I can't decide on the Island if I was
- 15:39Speaker 5: disappointed in the game and then it was zero zero
- 15:42Speaker 5: at the end or if that's just cracking hockey. You know,
- 15:45Speaker 5: in terms of how they're going to play, we expect
- 15:48Speaker 5: to see a lot of three two games, two to
- 15:49Speaker 5: one games, overtime games. I didn't expect to see any
- 15:53Speaker 5: zero zero games. But there's our first one and we're
- 15:55Speaker 5: a quarter away into the season.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel like the game on Long Island that
- 16:00Speaker 3: was cracking hockey. Baby. The way the way that this
- 16:04Speaker 3: team plays, the defensive structure, the attention to detail, that
- 16:10Speaker 3: hard checking style of game. That really was, you know,
- 16:16Speaker 3: kind of what I was expecting out of this team
- 16:19Speaker 3: in game two of that back to back, And I
- 16:21Speaker 3: think for me, when you look at the satisfaction of
- 16:25Speaker 3: where we are as going into the month of December,
- 16:30Speaker 3: you've won more than you've lost. You've got points now
- 16:33Speaker 3: and two for six of your last seven, so you're
- 16:35Speaker 3: four to one and two in your last seven games. Again,
- 16:41Speaker 3: I think this is the recipe. You win more games
- 16:45Speaker 3: than you lose, You get points in seven out of
- 16:48Speaker 3: every ten games. You find a way to win outright
- 16:52Speaker 3: four out of every six at least, right, that's going
- 16:55Speaker 3: to be the recipe for success coming into the year
- 16:59Speaker 3: or moving through the year, especially when you don't have
- 17:02Speaker 3: a lot of offense. You're winning a lot of two
- 17:04Speaker 3: to one, three two games. I'm looking at the schedule here,
- 17:08Speaker 3: you know, you go back ten games A one nothing
- 17:10Speaker 3: shootout loss, a three two win, a three two win,
- 17:15Speaker 3: four two four one, five to three, two to one, shootout,
- 17:19Speaker 3: two to one, four to three, a six to one.
- 17:21Speaker 3: We'll throw that one out, three one, three, two, four
- 17:24Speaker 3: to three. These are all one goal at most two
- 17:26Speaker 3: goal games. You haven't had a whole lot of stinkers,
- 17:29Speaker 3: which is really good. Yes, you know, I talked about
- 17:33Speaker 3: it last week that if you're gonna have a stinker
- 17:36Speaker 3: or two, you need to have it well placed. And
- 17:38Speaker 3: I feel like that that six to one San Jose
- 17:41Speaker 3: loss was probably your last stinker. Uh And and you've
- 17:46Speaker 3: gone out in the ten games since, and you been
- 17:48Speaker 3: able to pick up points in seven of those nine
- 17:52Speaker 3: games since then. So I'm I'm okay with where this
- 17:56Speaker 3: team is right now.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Allow me now to move on to this point because
- 18:00Speaker 1: I've heard it ever since training camp. I've heard it
- 18:04Speaker 1: through October, I've heard it through November, and we're almost
- 18:08Speaker 1: into December and we're at the Thanksgiving checkpoint. I want
- 18:12Speaker 1: us here to address this if somebody wants to go
- 18:15Speaker 1: out of their way and call this team boring, because again,
- 18:19Speaker 1: where do you get at when you talk about ultimate
- 18:21Speaker 1: success with where you want to go with this team
- 18:24Speaker 1: this year? And the definition of success for this team
- 18:28Speaker 1: was to be in the playoff mix. There's a lot
- 18:31Speaker 1: of season left, but so far, through twenty five percent
- 18:34Speaker 1: of the season, they're not just in the mix, they're
- 18:37Speaker 1: one point out of first place in the Pacific Division.
- 18:40Speaker 1: So yes, I know they cannot score a lot of goals,
- 18:43Speaker 1: so yes, I know in the last several games they're
- 18:46Speaker 1: coming up in the short end of shot attempts. Yes,
- 18:49Speaker 1: I know, last several games they're coming up in the
- 18:51Speaker 1: short end of high danger chances, and they're having to
- 18:54Speaker 1: survive the first period, survive the second period. But the
- 18:58Speaker 1: third period is where they really turn this dial up
- 19:00Speaker 1: a notch and they're making their move at that point.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Goaltending has been phenomenal. Defense for the most part has
- 19:07Speaker 1: been phenomenal. The penalty kill is getting better. And if
- 19:11Speaker 1: I go back to goaltending here and we'll dive into
- 19:13Speaker 1: more of this. The last time I could say that
- 19:16Speaker 1: the Kraken a lot of cheap goal it was a
- 19:19Speaker 1: road trip opener at Detroit. So you're playing with what
- 19:23Speaker 1: you are given right now, and the ultimate question is
- 19:27Speaker 1: are you giving your team enough chances here to win
- 19:30Speaker 1: every game. Some parts of this I understand there may
- 19:33Speaker 1: be luck involved, but that's hockey. But in other parts
- 19:36Speaker 1: of this, you are doing your best to play a
- 19:39Speaker 1: system that your coach outlined from day one, and they
- 19:42Speaker 1: have done it over and over and over. So I
- 19:46Speaker 1: know there's no top ends superstar skill up front. But
- 19:49Speaker 1: if you ask almost any Kraken fan, would they take
- 19:53Speaker 1: this from day one? The answer is yes. That does
- 19:57Speaker 1: not define boring. Winning defines excitement, and you're getting it
- 20:02Speaker 1: more and more and more.
- 20:03Speaker 3: I love spicy Mike, My goodness.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Geez, Mike dropping walking off stage.
- 20:11Speaker 3: Listen. You know, I think at the end of the day,
- 20:15Speaker 3: this is a results based business. You're getting the positive results, right,
- 20:20Speaker 3: But I go, I'm gonna I'm gonna steal a term
- 20:23Speaker 3: from college football and basketball, the eye test.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Right.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Yes, you're winning games. But when people talk about the
- 20:31Speaker 3: sex appeal of this team, when they talk about quote
- 20:34Speaker 3: unquote boring, you know what we understand there is no
- 20:38Speaker 3: counter badar. There is no maclin Celebrini, there is no
- 20:41Speaker 3: mcdamon or dry title or or McKinnon. I can go
- 20:45Speaker 3: on and on. You don't have that money making marketing
- 20:51Speaker 3: uh horse that you can ride. And I think that's
- 20:56Speaker 3: where people a lot of times are conflating and confusing
- 21:01Speaker 3: uh boring with success. Sure, yes, this team's gonna score
- 21:06Speaker 3: two and a half goals a game. That's fine. They've
- 21:08Speaker 3: won more than they've lost. We're gonna go into the
- 21:12Speaker 3: new year, hopefully still in a good spot for playoffs.
- 21:17Speaker 3: You go back to the nineties, the New Jersey Devils
- 21:20Speaker 3: one Stanley Cups playing this exact style of hockey. A
- 21:25Speaker 3: number of guys in that locker room have said, you know,
- 21:28Speaker 3: we're playing playoff hockey right now. This is how we're
- 21:30Speaker 3: gonna have to play in the playoffs, because, as we
- 21:32Speaker 3: all know, the NHL goes from a five to four,
- 21:37Speaker 3: four to three league to a three two two one
- 21:40Speaker 3: league almost overnight, right at the deadline. So once these
- 21:44Speaker 3: games start becoming three point games, the Kraken have been
- 21:48Speaker 3: are gonna have been playing three point games for sixty
- 21:51Speaker 3: sixty five games of the season, So they're setting themselves
- 21:54Speaker 3: up for success. And sure are they going to be
- 21:56Speaker 3: the most exciting team every night? No, okay, We've got
- 22:00Speaker 3: the self awareness to know you're not going to see
- 22:03Speaker 3: you guys dangling through fifteen guys. You're not going to
- 22:05Speaker 3: see you know, four or five, six, seven goal games.
- 22:08Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, we've said it before,
- 22:11Speaker 3: this is a results based business, and the crack and
- 22:14Speaker 3: are getting results.
- 22:15Speaker 5: Would I would add to that that, you know, there's
- 22:18Speaker 5: a fan perspective which which we we absolutely need to
- 22:21Speaker 5: keep in mind. But I think that from a player perspective,
- 22:25Speaker 5: entertaining is winning. I really don't care how it ends up.
- 22:29Speaker 5: The winning the hockey game is entertaining. It's entertaining, you know,
- 22:32Speaker 5: being on the ice to be a part of that.
- 22:34Speaker 5: It's entertaining to you know, to be in the building.
- 22:37Speaker 5: So I think it always starts and ends with winning.
- 22:40Speaker 5: How you do it, though, yeah, it can be more
- 22:43Speaker 5: entertaining from one way one game to the next, depending
- 22:45Speaker 5: on you know, what that game looks like. But I
- 22:49Speaker 5: think you have to remember that when you structure a
- 22:52Speaker 5: strategy for a team, A defensively tight structured team strategy
- 23:00Speaker 5: work for the Colorado Avalanche, maybe not work for the
- 23:03Speaker 5: Edmonton Owners because y're so strong offensively, you got to
- 23:07Speaker 5: let those let those birds fly. Whereas this this cracking team,
- 23:11Speaker 5: very strong on the blue line, very strong in net
- 23:15Speaker 5: So why not create a strategy that's defensively minded and
- 23:18Speaker 5: use those assets that are stronger in those areas and
- 23:21Speaker 5: then when you get the opportunities you do.
- 23:24Speaker 3: And I think too, you know what you said there
- 23:26Speaker 3: is perfect because a lot of times you'll see coaches
- 23:31Speaker 3: try to fit players into the system. But the Ley
- 23:36Speaker 3: Lambert is fitting this system around the place.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you.
- 23:42Speaker 3: So when you have a McDavid, when you have a
- 23:46Speaker 3: drive Title and a McKinnon and a ka Chuck and
- 23:49Speaker 3: a macar and a Rantan, when you have those guys, yes,
- 23:53Speaker 3: it's going to be an offensive system. Okay, those players
- 23:57Speaker 3: McDavid can fit into any system he on he's in
- 24:01Speaker 3: because of who he is, right, But this system that
- 24:05Speaker 3: Lane Lambert is coaching is developed for this team. That
- 24:09Speaker 3: is why you're having the success. If the Kraken had
- 24:14Speaker 3: forty goal guys, more than just Jared McCann, if they
- 24:18Speaker 3: had eighty ninety one hundred point horses, of course this
- 24:22Speaker 3: would be a more run and gun style offense. But
- 24:25Speaker 3: it's not so, and they don't have those guys. So
- 24:29Speaker 3: they're fitting this system to the players that they have
- 24:32Speaker 3: and that's why it's working. Do you want this system?
- 24:35Speaker 3: I don't think this system works in Edmonton. I don't
- 24:38Speaker 3: think this system works in Dallas or who else, Winnipeg?
- 24:43Speaker 1: Right, you change this system around your personnel.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, exactly.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Kracken as of this point, second best in the NHL
- 24:53Speaker 1: two point five goals a game five on five goal ratio,
- 24:57Speaker 1: eighth best in the NHL again at this point of
- 25:01Speaker 1: the year, as compared to back in September, if you
- 25:04Speaker 1: were told by Thanksgiving, when you're getting ready here to
- 25:08Speaker 1: put turkey or ham mac and cheese, stuffing whatever on
- 25:12Speaker 1: the table, would you take the Krack in second place
- 25:16Speaker 1: in the Pacific Division points percentage at six three six,
- 25:21Speaker 1: any way you have it? Without question, the answer would
- 25:25Speaker 1: be a resounding yes.
- 25:28Speaker 3: I would have taken the Crack in in the second
- 25:29Speaker 3: wild card at this point, right, I think coming in exactly,
- 25:35Speaker 3: I think coming into the year. My goal on on
- 25:39Speaker 3: day one of training camp, the floor for this team
- 25:43Speaker 3: for me was playing meaningful games as late as possible.
- 25:47Speaker 3: Right game sixty, game seventy, they had to mean something. Okay,
- 25:53Speaker 3: you couldn't be ten points out at Christmas, you couldn't
- 25:56Speaker 3: be twelve points out going into the Olympic break. You're
- 25:59Speaker 3: not going to overcome that. As long as this team
- 26:02Speaker 3: were in a position to be playing meaningful games, they
- 26:06Speaker 3: were having the conversation of should they be buyers at
- 26:10Speaker 3: the deadline? Right, that was the floor. That was the
- 26:14Speaker 3: absolute low point for my expectation. And now that the
- 26:18Speaker 3: fact that they're in second place in the division within
- 26:21Speaker 3: spitting distance of first, They've beaten some really good teams,
- 26:25Speaker 3: they're they're finding a way to stay at the top
- 26:29Speaker 3: of a very crowded group in the Western Conference. I mean,
- 26:34Speaker 3: this is all exceeding my expectation, not necessarily my belief,
- 26:42Speaker 3: but my expectation of where this team should be should
- 26:46Speaker 3: have been. If you look at the way it was constructed,
- 26:49Speaker 3: you look at the personnel, I expected this team to
- 26:52Speaker 3: be battling for a playoff spot. Now this team is
- 26:55Speaker 3: currently you're looking at again twenty two games in potentially
- 27:00Speaker 3: raising a division banner in the next six months. That
- 27:04Speaker 3: for me, is a huge improvement over where that expectation was.
- 27:09Speaker 1: And I think also the nice part about this is,
- 27:11Speaker 1: as compared to roughly last year, when so much of
- 27:13Speaker 1: the conversation was centered around what's wrong here with the
- 27:17Speaker 1: core of all of this, we're now talking about how
- 27:19Speaker 1: do you fix batters around the edges? And you had
- 27:21Speaker 1: to admit a course, goal scoring has been an issue
- 27:24Speaker 1: on this team. They're twenty ninth right now in the
- 27:26Speaker 1: NHL and they just couldn't get anything at Ubs. We're
- 27:29Speaker 1: going to hear to end that to back in that
- 27:32Speaker 1: one nothing shootout loss after the game. Cracking ad coach
- 27:35Speaker 1: Lane Lambert meeting here with the media to.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Assess the offensive production from your team tonight.
- 27:41Speaker 10: Well, we didn't score any goals, so.
- 27:44Speaker 3: We didn't.
- 27:46Speaker 10: Didn't find a way to capitalize. Of course, neither did they.
- 27:51Speaker 10: You know, I thought our goalie was really good. I
- 27:54Speaker 10: thought their goalie made some good saves as well.
- 27:56Speaker 3: But you know, it's just.
- 28:00Speaker 10: It's a common theme right now, shot volume or lock thereof,
- 28:04Speaker 10: and you know, we passed up too many shots again,
- 28:06Speaker 10: so at some point we got to figure this out.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Why do you think that is?
- 28:10Speaker 3: Is it like a hesitation you're seeing in the group
- 28:12Speaker 3: or what do you kind of point to.
- 28:13Speaker 10: I think we're looking for something better, and I don't
- 28:15Speaker 10: understand why. You know, we've got to shoot the pluck
- 28:18Speaker 10: the only way you can score goals. And I've set
- 28:20Speaker 10: it over and over again at leased.
- 28:22Speaker 3: To put pucks on net.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Cracking had four shots on net in the first period.
- 28:26Speaker 1: They had six shots on net in the second, eight
- 28:29Speaker 1: in the third, just one in overtime, where it was
- 28:31Speaker 1: heavily dominated by the Islanders for pluck possession in that game.
- 28:38Speaker 1: So I'll tee this one upfits. I know that you
- 28:40Speaker 1: want to get here to this? What do you do
- 28:42Speaker 1: to solve the offensive issues? And I mean folks may
- 28:45Speaker 1: ask what can you do by trade? Well, no one's
- 28:47Speaker 1: getting dangled out there right now on the market. Your
- 28:50Speaker 1: options sort of work with what you have. You hope
- 28:52Speaker 1: that Jared McCann is coming back here very soon, if
- 28:56Speaker 1: not Wednesday, But as to this point, you've got to
- 28:58Speaker 1: fight for offense, the base and the ugly way.
- 29:02Speaker 3: You know. I want to actually start off by just
- 29:04Speaker 3: can we can we admit and appreciate just how low
- 29:08Speaker 3: key hilarious Sley Lambert is, Like he it's not what
- 29:13Speaker 3: it right some of his one liners. And again, if
- 29:18Speaker 3: you're you're in we're in the rooms every day, we
- 29:21Speaker 3: know exactly what he means. But to the outside person
- 29:25Speaker 3: who may be watched that that is funny. Like he
- 29:28Speaker 3: his comedic timing, I think unintentionally is spot on. I
- 29:33Speaker 3: go back to the question I asked him in DC
- 29:35Speaker 3: a couple of weeks ago. I was like, Hey, did
- 29:37Speaker 3: back to back have anything to do with it? And
- 29:39Speaker 3: he was like, I don't care, uh that you know
- 29:44Speaker 3: it was a back? It was just dude, that's absolutely hilarious. No,
- 29:48Speaker 3: So I think I think how do you generate more offense? Listen,
- 29:52Speaker 3: at the end of the day, there's no one being
- 29:54Speaker 3: dangled like you mentioned, right, And unless you're willing to
- 29:59Speaker 3: put together a big package of prospects and current roster
- 30:03Speaker 3: players to go out and get that that offensive unicorn
- 30:08Speaker 3: that everyone seems to want, you have to work with
- 30:11Speaker 3: what you have. You know, shooting the puck. That that
- 30:15Speaker 3: that's that's it, he said it. The only thing that
- 30:18Speaker 3: I can point to is shooting the puck more. And
- 30:21Speaker 3: I think that this has been something that we've talked
- 30:24Speaker 3: about in the entirety. I think of this franchise's existence
- 30:28Speaker 3: is these these selectiveness there we go, selectiveness of this
- 30:34Speaker 3: team's shots.
- 30:36Speaker 1: They there's a reason behind that usually but that fits.
- 30:39Speaker 1: I'll let you go on.
- 30:40Speaker 3: But it seems like they're looking for the clear lane.
- 30:43Speaker 3: They're looking for the bar down, they're looking for the
- 30:47Speaker 3: sexy goal. Like what happened and what was it? Detroit? Right,
- 30:53Speaker 3: You look at the goal that was scored for not
- 30:58Speaker 3: em not if any, the red wing Nate Danielson who
- 31:01Speaker 3: scored the goal and goes off of eskate off of
- 31:03Speaker 3: his leg in the back of the You look at
- 31:05Speaker 3: Oscar Fisker mouleguards first NHL point. It goes off his knee,
- 31:10Speaker 3: off Carcier's knee into the back of the goal. So
- 31:13Speaker 3: those are the kind of goals I think this team's
- 31:16Speaker 3: are going to have to score and not being too
- 31:18Speaker 3: selective and right now, when you look at Seattle twenty
- 31:22Speaker 3: ninth with two point five to nine, so just over
- 31:25Speaker 3: two and a half goals a game, if you can
- 31:27Speaker 3: find a way to get that to three, you'd be
- 31:30Speaker 3: twenty at the NHL. If you can be in the
- 31:32Speaker 3: top two thirds get to three, I think a lot
- 31:36Speaker 3: of this issue, these issues are solved because the defensive structure.
- 31:40Speaker 3: I'm ready to say through twenty four games, twenty two games,
- 31:44Speaker 3: the defensive structure is fine. It's not changing. If you
- 31:48Speaker 3: can find a way to get point four more goals
- 31:51Speaker 3: per game, you're fine.
- 31:53Speaker 5: Four games on the road, an average of twenty two
- 31:56Speaker 5: shots on goal of game, there's no doubt this team
- 32:00Speaker 5: to put more pucks on net. But I would say
- 32:02Speaker 5: it differently. Rather rather than saying shoot more, I would
- 32:07Speaker 5: say making better shooting decisions, because sometimes the pass is
- 32:11Speaker 5: the right play, and the last thing you want a
- 32:12Speaker 5: player to do is start gripping their stick too tight
- 32:15Speaker 5: and thinking, well, as soon as I cross the blue line,
- 32:17Speaker 5: I got to put the puck on that because coach
- 32:19Speaker 5: says we got to shoot like that's that That's not
- 32:22Speaker 5: the answer. So better shooting decisions is what I would say.
- 32:25Speaker 5: I would also say, let's get Copocaco and Jared mccannon
- 32:29Speaker 5: back in the lineup. You know, let's remember that this
- 32:31Speaker 5: team sits fifth in the league right now for goals
- 32:35Speaker 5: by defenseman at thirteen, so let's make sure we're shooting
- 32:38Speaker 5: from the point as often as possible. Yeah, those goals
- 32:41Speaker 5: are going to continue to come, those greasy ones, although
- 32:43Speaker 5: we did have our first game where it was all
- 32:45Speaker 5: all snipes the other night.
- 32:46Speaker 3: But I think full of shooters out.
- 32:49Speaker 5: I think that's I think that's unique for this squad.
- 32:52Speaker 1: I was Vintareek.
- 32:55Speaker 5: I think this is make better shooting decisions and and
- 33:00Speaker 5: you know, shot shot mentality first is absolutely what you
- 33:04Speaker 5: want to be thinking. But don't force it. Don't try
- 33:06Speaker 5: and force pucks on net. That just shouldn't be. So
- 33:11Speaker 5: there's a fine balance in there. I think shooting more
- 33:14Speaker 5: also can lead to block shots, so it's not just
- 33:17Speaker 5: shooting more, it's not just making better shooting decisions, but
- 33:21Speaker 5: it's making sure the puck gets through to the net.
- 33:24Speaker 3: Right.
- 33:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I can go off legs and skates and stuff,
- 33:27Speaker 5: but if it's getting blocked five feet away from the
- 33:30Speaker 5: shot at the point every time and they're going the
- 33:31Speaker 5: other way, okay, you're shooting more, but that's not helping either.
- 33:34Speaker 5: So better shooting decisions and better I don't know, better
- 33:40Speaker 5: shooting angles for lack of a better phrase.
- 33:42Speaker 1: Here's what the point I wanted to get to that
- 33:45Speaker 1: fits brought up because so many players, and this is
- 33:48Speaker 1: especially in the last roughly five ten years of the NHL,
- 33:52Speaker 1: offense is not treated as if you get pucks on
- 33:56Speaker 1: net and more shot volume you know, necessarily means success.
- 34:00Speaker 1: A lot of players are being taught in different systems
- 34:02Speaker 1: where a shot is almost like a turnover to where
- 34:06Speaker 1: if you don't score on that thing, the puck's going
- 34:08Speaker 1: back down the other way and it might as well
- 34:09Speaker 1: just be like a dead giveaway. So how much do
- 34:12Speaker 1: you maybe I think, connect this here to previous thinking
- 34:18Speaker 1: and maybe more you know that is required to kind
- 34:22Speaker 1: of unwire some brains. And I'm not saying good to
- 34:25Speaker 1: the extreme where you're Carolina and you're dumping about you know,
- 34:28Speaker 1: eighty ninety shot attempts a game on net. But you're
- 34:32Speaker 1: looking more and more to try to incrementally build the
- 34:36Speaker 1: habits of shot first rather than pass first.
- 34:40Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that, you know, it doesn't happen overnight.
- 34:45Speaker 5: I think that there has to be commentary on film
- 34:49Speaker 5: with players. I think, you know, when when the player
- 34:52Speaker 5: sees that they were in the slot for you know,
- 34:55Speaker 5: a second, which is all it should take to get
- 34:57Speaker 5: a shot off, and they opted to try and pass
- 35:01Speaker 5: through three players to the right of the left to
- 35:03Speaker 5: hit that scene pass when they were right there on
- 35:05Speaker 5: the slot. There's a great example. Yeah that when that
- 35:09Speaker 5: pass is there, take it, but when it's not there,
- 35:11Speaker 5: put the puck on on net. That's that's a huge
- 35:14Speaker 5: one for me. You're right, Mike, it's going to take
- 35:17Speaker 5: some time. I think that, you know, between film and
- 35:22Speaker 5: practice and the crack and have a few days to
- 35:24Speaker 5: do that here over the next you know. Yeah, I
- 35:28Speaker 5: think that's there's gonna be a lot of discussion around that.
- 35:30Speaker 5: I also think you have to remember this team has
- 35:33Speaker 5: some young players on it right now. You think about
- 35:36Speaker 5: you think about Oscar Fisker, Mulgard. You think about Yannie Newman,
- 35:40Speaker 5: and you think about Birthday Catton lots of times. The
- 35:44Speaker 5: tendency when you're a young player trying to make a team,
- 35:46Speaker 5: trying to stay on a team is well, rather than shoot,
- 35:49Speaker 5: I'm going to dish it over to Jordan Everley, even
- 35:51Speaker 5: though there's three guys between you and Jordan Eberley or
- 35:54Speaker 5: Matty Benier or whoever, and you tend to overpass. And
- 35:57Speaker 5: I think that the coaches need to kind of get
- 35:59Speaker 5: in the ears of those young players and say, listen,
- 36:01Speaker 5: you're just as good as shoot as any the other guys.
- 36:03Speaker 5: If you get a chance, rip it, you know. And
- 36:06Speaker 5: I think they've done that a little bit with Yanni Newman.
- 36:08Speaker 5: You saw I think last I checked during the game,
- 36:10Speaker 5: he had three shots on goal last game, so he's
- 36:13Speaker 5: definitely shooting the puck more. I think getting into all
- 36:16Speaker 5: the youngsters years and saying the same thing would be
- 36:18Speaker 5: good shootouts.
- 36:20Speaker 1: This has been a topic in the last twenty four hours,
- 36:22Speaker 1: roughly from the responses I got here from Twitter and
- 36:25Speaker 1: x where the krack nd fell the eight and fifteen
- 36:28Speaker 1: all time in shootouts after the loss at Ubs Areena.
- 36:32Speaker 1: I mean, you go through some theories of you know,
- 36:35Speaker 1: do you go lefty, righty, lefty, keep the goalie guessing?
- 36:39Speaker 1: You know, who do you deploy out there? I mean,
- 36:41Speaker 1: I'll tell you this, and just going back through or
- 36:42Speaker 1: through this. Chandler Stevenson went back out there because he's
- 36:45Speaker 1: been successful before and shootout attempts. Freddie Goodreau went out
- 36:48Speaker 1: there because he's got some of the best individual skill
- 36:51Speaker 1: on this team in this situation, plus his numbers as
- 36:53Speaker 1: well and all he told him has also scored before.
- 36:57Speaker 1: But yet, how much of a concern do we put
- 36:59Speaker 1: into this thing?
- 37:01Speaker 3: I think you should just go to the top of
- 37:03Speaker 3: the hash marks and just shoot as hard as you can.
- 37:06Speaker 1: That's personally just it's entertainment, entertainment.
- 37:10Speaker 3: You know what I'm gonna tell you right now, I'm
- 37:14Speaker 3: I'm done with the shootout. I'm over it. Just from
- 37:17Speaker 3: a fan perspective, you know, I would.
- 37:19Speaker 1: Rather You're not the first person I've heard this from also, but.
- 37:22Speaker 3: Go on play seven minutes of overtime. Yeah, and if
- 37:26Speaker 3: it's still tied, then then then we're tied. Then then
- 37:30Speaker 3: we're done, right, seven minutes overtime and then you know
- 37:33Speaker 3: we were we myself and Hal and JT. We're we're
- 37:38Speaker 3: arguing about this on the bus the other day about disgusting.
- 37:43Speaker 3: Disgusting if you go to a three two one points format,
- 37:47Speaker 3: three points for a win, two points for an overtime win,
- 37:51Speaker 3: and then if it's a tie, each team gets a
- 37:53Speaker 3: point and then you go away. But I'm not concerned
- 37:58Speaker 3: because I think so few games have gone to the shootout.
- 38:02Speaker 3: What do you say, Mike, eight and fifteen all time? Yeah,
- 38:05Speaker 3: in shootouts. So this is now year five eighty two
- 38:09Speaker 3: times four plus twenty two. Right, we've had twenty three
- 38:15Speaker 3: of whatever that math is games in a shootout. I
- 38:19Speaker 3: don't care. I hate the shootout. I'm over, yep, I'll
- 38:22Speaker 3: get your trustee calculator. No, I'm not concerned. I think, honestly,
- 38:27Speaker 3: it's frustrating. I get it. You're running the good goalies.
- 38:31Speaker 3: You're running the hot goalies sometimes goalies. You know, there
- 38:34Speaker 3: are some goalies who are really good in the shootout.
- 38:36Speaker 3: We could go back to what they do in college
- 38:38Speaker 3: hockey and in junior hockey, where each team ends every
- 38:42Speaker 3: practice with a shootout. You can do that as well, right,
- 38:46Speaker 3: But I think my concern meter for the shootout is
- 38:51Speaker 3: probably a two of ten. I don't care.
- 38:53Speaker 1: I'll toss this here to EL. I would certainly agree,
- 38:55Speaker 1: And I think I had this conversation previously with with
- 38:58Speaker 1: with one of our colleagues on this, and I mean, listen,
- 39:01Speaker 1: I get it back in two thousand and five, this
- 39:03Speaker 1: game came out of the lockout. There was no hockey
- 39:06Speaker 1: for a year at the NHL level. I mean, they
- 39:08Speaker 1: were start for attention. It felt like the game's attention
- 39:11Speaker 1: meter was on the brink, so you had to find
- 39:12Speaker 1: a way to bring back more fan interest, get rid
- 39:16Speaker 1: of ties. This was one way to do it. But
- 39:18Speaker 1: I mean, guys, two thousand and five was twenty years ago. Here,
- 39:20Speaker 1: I certainly feel you and agree that there are different
- 39:23Speaker 1: solutions out there that we can start to implement that
- 39:27Speaker 1: kind of give this more. I think of a well
- 39:31Speaker 1: rounded and I think more of a nutritious, filled to
- 39:36Speaker 1: the end result here.
- 39:37Speaker 5: To a game. Yeah, the shield is just a unique
- 39:40Speaker 5: skill that you don't even get to see in a
- 39:42Speaker 5: regular hockey game, Like if you get a break away,
- 39:44Speaker 5: you're not attacking the net the same way you are
- 39:46Speaker 5: on a shootout. So let's just start with that number two.
- 39:49Speaker 5: I agree with Fitz that that that's One of two
- 39:51Speaker 5: things I think should happen is extend that five minutes
- 39:54Speaker 5: to seven minutes. The other thing, and we've talked about
- 39:56Speaker 5: this as well, is don't let the team take the
- 39:59Speaker 5: puck back into the new zone. Once you're across the
- 40:01Speaker 5: blue line, you can't bring it back. I think that
- 40:04Speaker 5: that will force play a little bit more. It'll keep
- 40:07Speaker 5: it exciting because there'll be turnovers and you won't be
- 40:09Speaker 5: able to go reset back in the neutral zone or
- 40:12Speaker 5: throw it back to your goaltender at the other end.
- 40:14Speaker 5: It becomes less of a game of keep away and
- 40:17Speaker 5: more of a true game of hockey, which I think
- 40:19Speaker 5: at the end of the day, that's what the fans
- 40:20Speaker 5: want to see. They want to see hockey played in
- 40:22Speaker 5: its purest form, as if both teams just got two
- 40:26Speaker 5: miners each and it's three on three hockey.
- 40:28Speaker 1: Yeah, this is great. We're going to get to Tom
- 40:29Speaker 1: Gazola in just a little bit here to take a
- 40:31Speaker 1: look at Edmonton and Dallas. But I mean, I think
- 40:35Speaker 1: it's overdue to give as much props as we have
- 40:39Speaker 1: to give here to goaltending. Where would this team be
- 40:42Speaker 1: right now without Joey de coord this guy on the
- 40:46Speaker 1: shelf without Matt Murray, and from what we've seen, it's
- 40:49Speaker 1: more revealing here in this last week without Philip Grubauer.
- 40:53Speaker 5: I posted the stat last week teams with three goaltenders
- 40:57Speaker 5: that have played five or more games with the save
- 40:59Speaker 5: percentage is at nine hundred above. Nobody else has it
- 41:02Speaker 5: except for Seattle. And by the way, those say percentages
- 41:05Speaker 5: are now nine o nine for Decord, nine to twelve
- 41:08Speaker 5: for Grubauer, at nine twenty two for Murray, even though
- 41:12Speaker 5: he's on the shelf. So this is a strength of
- 41:15Speaker 5: this team, and whatever strategies are deployed, whether it be
- 41:19Speaker 5: defensive structure or offensive structure, need to start from between
- 41:23Speaker 5: the pipes because that's that's that's a strength for this team.
- 41:26Speaker 5: So it's been consistent. If you want to say the
- 41:31Speaker 5: San Jose game was a dip, okay, but I think
- 41:33Speaker 5: it was a dip in the whole whole team. But
- 41:35Speaker 5: consistently through the first quarter of the season, gultenating has
- 41:38Speaker 5: been one of the strongest parts for the scracking team
- 41:42Speaker 5: ten out of.
- 41:42Speaker 3: Ten no notes I think overall for Grubauer, for Decord,
- 41:47Speaker 3: for Murray. You know, I know that Grubauer was a
- 41:50Speaker 3: big question coming into the season, just given the last
- 41:54Speaker 3: couple of seasons. But I mean, I think he has
- 41:57Speaker 3: been you know, right now without having seen how he
- 42:01Speaker 3: will perform for the next sixty games. I mean, he's
- 42:05Speaker 3: already got my vote for most improved player, right. I
- 42:08Speaker 3: think Philip Gruenbauer has been nothing short of phenomenal this season.
- 42:13Speaker 3: And I think also what people are really are sometimes
- 42:16Speaker 3: may not realize or maybe they do what they don't
- 42:19Speaker 3: understand just how big this is. There are three goaltenders
- 42:23Speaker 3: on this roster. That is three personalities, that is three egos.
- 42:28Speaker 3: And not to say that these are egotistible guys, but
- 42:31Speaker 3: it's just, you know, we all have an ego.
- 42:33Speaker 1: They're wired to put their hand up saying wins.
- 42:35Speaker 3: It might turn one hundred percent. We're just wired as that.
- 42:39Speaker 3: So that is not that is not a commentary on
- 42:42Speaker 3: them as people. That is just an overall fact, right,
- 42:47Speaker 3: And the fact that Colin Zulianello, our goaltending coach, has
- 42:50Speaker 3: been able to manage that, to get these guys on
- 42:54Speaker 3: the same page. They are constantly cheering for each other.
- 42:58Speaker 3: It is a next man up mentality. You know, you're
- 43:01Speaker 3: absolutely gutted for Matt Murray who was out six weeks
- 43:05Speaker 3: and I remember talking to you were talking to him
- 43:08Speaker 3: back in preseason and he was saying, this is the
- 43:10Speaker 3: best that he's felt in ten years, and you're gutted
- 43:13Speaker 3: for him. But now you've got Decord and Grubau were
- 43:16Speaker 3: playing some of the best hockey that we've seen this
- 43:18Speaker 3: season and a lot of the success. The defensive structure
- 43:24Speaker 3: is working, but at the end of the day, the
- 43:26Speaker 3: last line of defense is your goaltenders. And ten out
- 43:30Speaker 3: of ten no notes again the San Jose game, I
- 43:33Speaker 3: get it was a dud, but other than that, I've
- 43:37Speaker 3: got no issue with how these three players have been
- 43:42Speaker 3: performing all year long.
- 43:43Speaker 1: I remember you mentioned Dave Lowry's name back in the
- 43:47Speaker 1: twenty twenty two to twenty three season as the best
- 43:52Speaker 1: behind the scenes hired that this team made. That just
- 43:56Speaker 1: took him up an extra notch. I would argue Colin
- 43:59Speaker 1: Zulianello has been the best low key higher from this
- 44:03Speaker 1: last summer, which has now taken this team up a notch.
- 44:05Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, he's all business and just like Fitz says,
- 44:08Speaker 5: he knows all three of these goaltenders well, he knows
- 44:11Speaker 5: what they need, what they don't need, and he feeds
- 44:14Speaker 5: them appropriately. I mean, you know, every goaltender wants to
- 44:17Speaker 5: play eighty two games. Like any goaltender that doesn't want
- 44:20Speaker 5: to play eighty two games, I don't want my team.
- 44:22Speaker 5: But they can't. Everybody knows they can't.
- 44:25Speaker 2: But you have to. You have to.
- 44:27Speaker 5: They have to be like racehorses, just raring to go.
- 44:29Speaker 5: They want to play every game. And so in Colin's position,
- 44:33Speaker 5: he's going to figure out, you know, how to dole
- 44:35Speaker 5: it out, how to you know, make sure each one
- 44:37Speaker 5: of them is ready that's not playing, and when they
- 44:39Speaker 5: do get their chance, reinforced. You know, hey, this went
- 44:42Speaker 5: really well. Keep this up. And right now he's got
- 44:44Speaker 5: all three balls in the air, so to speak, and
- 44:47Speaker 5: he's doing a great job of it.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Krack and have their second matchup of the season coming
- 44:51Speaker 1: up with the Dallas Stars on Wednesday. After that it
- 44:54Speaker 1: is Saturday, the matinee against the Edmonton Oilers. Well, it
- 44:57Speaker 1: was going to be a matter of time, but we
- 44:59Speaker 1: finally got him. This is Tom Goazola joining us now
- 45:02Speaker 1: on Crack and weekly now with Edmonton Sports Talk these days.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Also you can see from time to time on NHL Network. Tommy,
- 45:09Speaker 1: you're doing great workout there in Edmonton. Great to have you.
- 45:13Speaker 1: I first want to ask you, is there such thing
- 45:16Speaker 1: as a back to back Cup final hangover here? Because
- 45:19Speaker 1: I mean, what level of concern are be looking at
- 45:21Speaker 1: right now? On a scale of one to ten as
- 45:24Speaker 1: far as the Edmonton Oilers at the quarter pole of
- 45:26Speaker 1: the season.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Let's call it alert status red Mike around here. So
- 45:31Speaker 2: I don't know, nine to ten. It's unreal because last
- 45:35Speaker 2: night on the postgame show they lose to to one,
- 45:38Speaker 2: a couple a late goal and then the one great
- 45:41Speaker 2: opportunity where Jack rosselvik Kent put the puck home past Vasilowski.
- 45:46Speaker 2: I was like, oh, what to say, but he just
- 45:47Speaker 2: slammed it into Vassilevski's pad. By the way, Zach Hyman
- 45:51Speaker 2: was on top of Vassilowski, You're trying to jump over him,
- 45:53Speaker 2: and then it goes back the other way and Jake
- 45:55Speaker 2: denzil wins it for the lightning. So it was kind
- 45:57Speaker 2: of heartbreaking. And the night before after the Washington loss,
- 46:01Speaker 2: people were losing their minds. The anger, the vitriol, the
- 46:05Speaker 2: fire of this guy, trade that guy. It was NonStop
- 46:09Speaker 2: for the entire show, and then postgame last night it
- 46:12Speaker 2: was like, well, you know, they tried hard and they
- 46:15Speaker 2: almost won and it was a tough situation. It was
- 46:18Speaker 2: such a calm postgame from the fan base in our audience,
- 46:22Speaker 2: which was incredible because I'm like, what happened to being
- 46:25Speaker 2: angry and frustrated like people were twenty four hours prior
- 46:28Speaker 2: to that. But it just kind of speaks to where
- 46:32Speaker 2: the team is at here in Edmonton's it's nine to
- 46:35Speaker 2: nine and four or nine nine to five is the
- 46:38Speaker 2: record now. But I said to Sean Bell, who was
- 46:41Speaker 2: on the postgame with me last night, I said, Belsie,
- 46:43Speaker 2: it's weird. I don't like that people are saying there
- 46:47Speaker 2: are building blocks from this game and we're not that
- 46:50Speaker 2: mad and not that upset about it, because it doesn't
- 46:54Speaker 2: seem right to be appraising such mediocrity. Kind of like
- 47:00Speaker 2: the fire, I kind of like the chaos. And maybe
- 47:02Speaker 2: that's just me being a sick puppy when it comes to.
- 47:04Speaker 3: Pre and posted.
- 47:05Speaker 1: You miss me in June, don't you.
- 47:07Speaker 2: Yeah, it's fun, but it's a weird spot that they're
- 47:14Speaker 2: in and really, like you, you take a step back
- 47:16Speaker 2: and you go, well, where are they in the standings?
- 47:18Speaker 2: Not in a great spot, but they're not really out
- 47:20Speaker 2: of it. So I think it's because the expectation is
- 47:23Speaker 2: built up over the last couple of years, going to
- 47:25Speaker 2: the Stanley Cup Final, losing to the eventual Cup champions
- 47:27Speaker 2: four years in a row. It's kind of built this
- 47:31Speaker 2: expectation with the fan base. I think that's natural with
- 47:33Speaker 2: the fan base too. But yeah, people are They weren't
- 47:37Speaker 2: mad last night. They were just disappointed, you guys, And
- 47:40Speaker 2: that's scary, scary place to be. I don't like disappointment.
- 47:44Speaker 3: My mom My mom still says that all the time.
- 47:46Speaker 3: I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed, Mom.
- 47:50Speaker 2: That's what some reflection kicks in, and you're like, I
- 47:54Speaker 2: need to be better.
- 47:55Speaker 3: Because when you're disappointed, it's something that I did, Like,
- 47:58Speaker 3: I can't put it back on. You're mad, that's good,
- 48:01Speaker 3: that's on you. But if you're disappointed, that means I
- 48:04Speaker 3: screwed up, all.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Right, Tom, How surprised are you with the whole level
- 48:08Speaker 1: of parody and the cluster of team still kind of
- 48:11Speaker 1: running together at this point of the season, especially in
- 48:14Speaker 1: the Western Conference.
- 48:15Speaker 2: Very surprised. There's a huge mushy middle. It feels like
- 48:19Speaker 2: I don't know how many games are what the percentages
- 48:21Speaker 2: I didn't look at it that have gone to overtime.
- 48:24Speaker 2: So we've had all these three point nights in the NHL,
- 48:27Speaker 2: and it feels like when I look on the out
- 48:28Speaker 2: of town scoreboard is like ot ot shootout, and it's
- 48:32Speaker 2: just it's it's interesting in that regard. I thought to myself,
- 48:35Speaker 2: I'm driving home from the studio yesterday, and I thought,
- 48:38Speaker 2: these teams like playing to get to overtime. Do they
- 48:41Speaker 2: all want to, you know, inflate their stats with the
- 48:45Speaker 2: Betman point or the loser point, whatever you want to
- 48:47Speaker 2: call it. And I was like, no, Hockey's not that
- 48:49Speaker 2: type of game. You can't script it like the NFL.
- 48:52Speaker 2: That's a joke, by the way.
- 48:53Speaker 3: But.
- 48:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's been interesting, like you're not really out
- 48:58Speaker 2: of it, even even the bottom. And it's been a
- 49:02Speaker 2: weird season that way. Maybe maybe teams start to break
- 49:04Speaker 2: away and and and we start to see some separation,
- 49:07Speaker 2: but really to this point, everyone's kind of clumped together,
- 49:10Speaker 2: and it makes things hard to read when it comes
- 49:13Speaker 2: to two team, especially within the division. And then you know,
- 49:16Speaker 2: go outside in the conference and you go, I don't
- 49:19Speaker 2: know how these teams stack up because they're all kind of.
- 49:21Speaker 11: Average yeah, yeah, three months ago who had Calgary at
- 49:24Speaker 11: the bottom of their being goal card. Yeah, that's that's
- 49:28Speaker 11: that's really surprising what's going on over there. But you know,
- 49:30Speaker 11: talking about goaltending, and that was a big part of
- 49:34Speaker 11: the Edmonton discussion certainly through the first month of the season.
- 49:37Speaker 11: Has that tamp down a little bit? Or is it
- 49:39Speaker 11: still part of every postgame discussion when there isn't a
- 49:43Speaker 11: dub on the on the card.
- 49:47Speaker 2: Every night is a goalie discussion. It's unreal. And and
- 49:51Speaker 2: like your old Palawaukee Engage, who's in the studio behind
- 49:54Speaker 2: me doing a show right now as we as we discussed. Yeah,
- 49:57Speaker 2: he brought up something the other day that's that's really
- 50:00Speaker 2: interesting after the Washington game and and he said that
- 50:05Speaker 2: he sees Stuart Skinner as being broken and I'm thinking
- 50:10Speaker 2: to myself, like, oh man, like, that is not a
- 50:12Speaker 2: good place to be. And he compared it to the Yips.
- 50:15Speaker 2: The Yips, yeah like, and he pointed out the Devin
- 50:19Speaker 2: Dubnick situation in Edmonton about a decade ago. Dubnick was
- 50:23Speaker 2: broken and the team was a mess and they had
- 50:26Speaker 2: Dallas Aikins as the head coach and that obviously didn't work,
- 50:30Speaker 2: and Dubnik was in this awful place professionally and he
- 50:33Speaker 2: was having a tough time away from the rink and
- 50:36Speaker 2: he was just starting his family. Like it was just
- 50:38Speaker 2: this this storm of negativity around him that you know,
- 50:41Speaker 2: they fired him off into Nashville for Matt Hendrix and
- 50:45Speaker 2: then it didn't go well for Dubnic in Nashville. He
- 50:49Speaker 2: went to Montreal, had to ask to you know, leave
- 50:51Speaker 2: the team, take care of I think he had his
- 50:53Speaker 2: first child at that time with his wife, and there's
- 50:57Speaker 2: so much stuff going on. Then he goes to Arizona
- 51:00Speaker 2: and he's working with Mike Smith and Sean Burke and
- 51:02Speaker 2: he resuscitates his career, becomes an all star year after
- 51:04Speaker 2: year after year, and Mini and so Joaquin goes. I
- 51:10Speaker 2: see a lot of similarities in this scenario with with
- 51:13Speaker 2: Stuart Skinner compared to what Devin Dubnik was going through.
- 51:16Speaker 2: And I was there front center doing working for Oilers
- 51:19Speaker 2: TV at the time, and I was like, that's not
- 51:20Speaker 2: a good place to be. So I'll give Stut's credit,
- 51:24Speaker 2: Stut Skinner and Calvin Pickard credit because for the first
- 51:27Speaker 2: two or three weeks of this season, more so Skinner,
- 51:30Speaker 2: those guys. They they gave these Oilers a chance night
- 51:34Speaker 2: in Night Out, but they weren't getting any run support.
- 51:37Speaker 2: And that's still a problem for this Oilers team. They've
- 51:39Speaker 2: only scored more than three goals six times this year
- 51:42Speaker 2: through twenty three games, and that's pretty alarming considering the
- 51:45Speaker 2: firepower that this team does possess. So the goal oh see,
- 51:50Speaker 2: there you go, And how do you win games if
- 51:54Speaker 2: you can't score a goal, if you're not gonna run
- 51:56Speaker 2: run support, and you're trying to make all these saves
- 51:57Speaker 2: and the Oilers defensively or an absolute calamity, I mean,
- 52:01Speaker 2: so spotty, from the blue liners to the five man unit.
- 52:05Speaker 2: When you include the forwards, they can't break out pucks
- 52:08Speaker 2: and they get hemmed in, they give up ten bell chances,
- 52:11Speaker 2: they barely generate you know, high scoring or high danger
- 52:14Speaker 2: chances of their own. And then so the goalies just
- 52:17Speaker 2: finally they broke. And that's a discussion night in night out.
- 52:22Speaker 2: I mean, we see people proposing trades for goalies every night, saying,
- 52:26Speaker 2: call up Connor Ingram, who's only two to two and
- 52:28Speaker 2: two down in Bakersfield right now, his goals against average
- 52:32Speaker 2: over three, it's around three and a half is save
- 52:34Speaker 2: percentage sub nine hundred. So he's trying to figure it
- 52:37Speaker 2: out too down there, and there aren't a lot of
- 52:40Speaker 2: simple solutions, and so the goaltending issue comes up every night,
- 52:44Speaker 2: and I don't think it's as easy as just trying
- 52:46Speaker 2: to fire off stew Skinner somewhere else and try to
- 52:49Speaker 2: get somebody else to come in and it'll all go away,
- 52:52Speaker 2: because there's so many problems outside of the goaltending around here.
- 52:56Speaker 3: Tommy. I know we talk a lot about McDavid and Drysidle,
- 52:59Speaker 3: those are the two big catalysts, but you mentioned the
- 53:02Speaker 3: offense and knaw block the other day, I think it
- 53:05Speaker 3: was last week, said something to the effective you know,
- 53:08Speaker 3: McDavid and dry Sidle have to be McDavid and dry Sidle,
- 53:11Speaker 3: then the other guys you know, need to step up
- 53:13Speaker 3: on paraphrasing, but essentially, as what we said, how much
- 53:16Speaker 3: has the gauntlet been laid? How what is the feeling
- 53:19Speaker 3: in that dressing room about the other players doing more?
- 53:24Speaker 3: This reminds me a lot of those nineties bulls where
- 53:28Speaker 3: it's just Michael Jordan gets the ball, everyone back away
- 53:31Speaker 3: and we're gonna We're gonna see what happens. What is
- 53:34Speaker 3: the feeling inside the organization, inside that dressing room about Hey,
- 53:39Speaker 3: McDavid and dry title can only do so much at
- 53:42Speaker 3: a certain point. We're going to need the other players
- 53:46Speaker 3: on this roster to step up and chip in some offense.
- 53:49Speaker 2: Yeah, secondary scoring has been an issue that feels like
- 53:52Speaker 2: for a long time, Everett, it comes up. I mean
- 53:55Speaker 2: the last couple of years they have had Corey Perry's
- 53:58Speaker 2: kind of rise up. He almost had twenty goals, he
- 54:01Speaker 2: had nineteen. Last year he finished with nineteen. Jeff Skinner
- 54:04Speaker 2: actually finished with sixteen. Same with Victor Arvidson. Like they
- 54:07Speaker 2: had weak starts to their oilers' tenure and then they
- 54:10Speaker 2: kind of picked it up as the season went on.
- 54:12Speaker 2: Oddly enough, that's when the team started to wake up too.
- 54:15Speaker 2: So the secondary scorer here, like you know, Ryan Jjohenapkins
- 54:19Speaker 2: was playing well before he got hurt. He was contributing.
- 54:22Speaker 2: He was one of the bright spots on this team.
- 54:25Speaker 2: They didn't have Zach Heyman until about a week ago.
- 54:27Speaker 2: He's been good, but he's playing catch up as well.
- 54:30Speaker 2: Like he was skating, he was in training camp, couldn't shoot.
- 54:33Speaker 2: It was healing up. The severely complicated, dislocated risk that
- 54:37Speaker 2: he suffered against the Stars and the playoffs, and then
- 54:41Speaker 2: there was hope that Andrew manja Pane would come in
- 54:43Speaker 2: and give them a little bit of an offensive boost.
- 54:47Speaker 2: That has come and gone. He's been pretty streaky at times.
- 54:51Speaker 2: And then Jack Rosslovic after a few games, he's kind
- 54:54Speaker 2: of settled in and he's been a secondary type scorer
- 54:57Speaker 2: for them and actually been a pretty good signing. And
- 55:00Speaker 2: see he's hungry for his next contract. So there's been
- 55:03Speaker 2: guys that they went out and got and guys that
- 55:05Speaker 2: they've kind of brought in from the farm, like of
- 55:08Speaker 2: Matt Savoy, where it just isn't clicking offensively. You can
- 55:11Speaker 2: see he's doing the right things and he's in the
- 55:13Speaker 2: right places, just hasn't put it together and figured out
- 55:15Speaker 2: how to make it turn into points on the score sheet.
- 55:19Speaker 2: Ike Howard got sent down. I mean, it's tough to
- 55:22Speaker 2: put a lot on a guy that just want to
- 55:23Speaker 2: hope Baker is twenty years old and say, okay, kid,
- 55:26Speaker 2: go score us twenty Yeah, learn how to play pro
- 55:28Speaker 2: hockey at the highest level on a team is supposed
- 55:30Speaker 2: to win a Stanley Cup.
- 55:31Speaker 3: Well, the annoying part is when you have a twenty
- 55:33Speaker 3: year old like that, and then you see the other
- 55:35Speaker 3: twenty year olds around the league and what they're doing. Obviously,
- 55:38Speaker 3: you know Isaac Howard is not Celebrini, is not Badard. No,
- 55:42Speaker 3: but it can be hard sometimes and not say, well,
- 55:45Speaker 3: they're guys doing it, why can't our guy do it?
- 55:47Speaker 2: So, yeah, he's not those guys.
- 55:50Speaker 3: Yeah, exuple guys.
- 55:51Speaker 2: He's a good, great player. He'll be a good NHL
- 55:53Speaker 2: R I'm sure for a long time, but he ain't
- 55:55Speaker 2: there yet. So it's been a lot of that. And
- 55:58Speaker 2: like Vasilli pod Coles and he's a third fourth liner,
- 56:01Speaker 2: he hasn't really chipped in. Trent Frederick Guys has been
- 56:03Speaker 2: a thorn for Oilers fans, and rightly Soor just scored
- 56:06Speaker 2: his second goal of the season. He's been a bit
- 56:09Speaker 2: of a shell of his former self. So there's been
- 56:11Speaker 2: a lot of disappointment when it comes to forwards and offense.
- 56:14Speaker 2: Evan blue Shard until you know, a couple of weeks ago,
- 56:17Speaker 2: wasn't putting any points up on the board, and that's
- 56:20Speaker 2: that's a problem for a team that lost I think
- 56:22Speaker 2: it was like sixty three goals due to guys being
- 56:25Speaker 2: moved out in the offseason.
- 56:27Speaker 1: Tom goes All joining us right now on the Beacon
- 56:28Speaker 1: Plumbing hot line here for Cracking Weekly. More on that, Tom,
- 56:32Speaker 1: when I'm kind of using this here to frame this
- 56:35Speaker 1: for people who are still learning this game around here,
- 56:37Speaker 1: and why teams do this? When Conor McDavid and Leon
- 56:42Speaker 1: Dry side a load up on one line together, you
- 56:45Speaker 1: get a superstar line, a duo that can do a
- 56:48Speaker 1: lot of damage. But then you also have the trade
- 56:51Speaker 1: off where you can spread them out, play one guy
- 56:54Speaker 1: on one line, one guy on the other end, spread
- 56:56Speaker 1: the offense out, more ships and more opportunities. So what
- 57:00Speaker 1: kind of impact and workload does that put on them
- 57:05Speaker 1: their ice time and the guys also playing behind them.
- 57:08Speaker 2: I love that you asked that, Mike, because that's a
- 57:11Speaker 2: big talking point too, those like they separated them the
- 57:15Speaker 2: other night for the Washington game. They have to go
- 57:18Speaker 2: eleven and seven, by the way, because they're down a
- 57:21Speaker 2: couple of bodies and curtisals are Noah Felp. They have
- 57:24Speaker 2: seven defensemen on the roster. They're up against the cap
- 57:26Speaker 2: right now.
- 57:27Speaker 3: The Boilers have been going eleven and seven since Gretzky
- 57:30Speaker 3: was Edmonton, and I cannot remember the last time Edmonton
- 57:34Speaker 3: played twelve and six seriously between injury and cap reasons
- 57:39Speaker 3: over the last eighteen years.
- 57:41Speaker 1: And still watching mister Rogers back then.
- 57:44Speaker 2: Gosh, man, well, hey, how about the Knights that they
- 57:47Speaker 2: had to dress like nineteen skaters because of cap implications? Right,
- 57:52Speaker 2: You're like, what are we doing here? So there's been
- 57:54Speaker 2: that and uh and then McDavid and dry Sattle. It
- 57:57Speaker 2: took seven minutes for Chris Nablock to reunite them in Washington.
- 58:01Speaker 2: That's how bad things were boring the other night. And
- 58:03Speaker 2: people get frustrated around here because they're like, those guys
- 58:05Speaker 2: are supposed to drive their own lines. That's the term,
- 58:10Speaker 2: that's the hot word, buzzword, whatever you want to call
- 58:12Speaker 2: it around here. It's like, well, Leon drives his online
- 58:15Speaker 2: Connor drives his own line. Go find competent wingers for
- 58:17Speaker 2: both those guys, and you got a top six. Yeah.
- 58:20Speaker 2: In theory, that's great. In practice, it's been spotty at best.
- 58:24Speaker 2: So the nuclear option as we call it, they rely
- 58:28Speaker 2: on a lot. Obviously, they have those two killing penalties
- 58:32Speaker 2: together this year, which puzzles a lot of people, myself included,
- 58:36Speaker 2: because prior to that they would come on at the
- 58:38Speaker 2: end of a penalty kill and try to take the
- 58:41Speaker 2: momentum back after a good PK and that was a strategy,
- 58:44Speaker 2: but that's changed where those two are now killing penalties
- 58:47Speaker 2: and that's a head scratcher. And then at the end
- 58:49Speaker 2: of the night, we're watching them minimum twenty three to
- 58:52Speaker 2: twenty seven minutes on the time on ice sheet when
- 58:55Speaker 2: you're looking at the game log. So it's frustrating a
- 58:58Speaker 2: lot of people. And then guys get cold on the bench.
- 59:00Speaker 2: They're not out on the ice for like literally ten
- 59:03Speaker 2: minutes at a time, and they they end up with
- 59:05Speaker 2: minimal minutes and their impact. People are going, why aren't
- 59:08Speaker 2: they getting depth scoring, Well, it's because they're rolling out
- 59:10Speaker 2: ninety seven to twenty nine with whoever else is kind
- 59:13Speaker 2: of going that night, every second shift. And it's become
- 59:16Speaker 2: this this issue. But it isn't a Chris Knoblock problem.
- 59:21Speaker 2: It has not been a Chris no Block only problem.
- 59:25Speaker 2: It goes all the way back to when Todd mccollin
- 59:26Speaker 2: was the coach. When he figured out that he had
- 59:28Speaker 2: two super superstars on the on the roster, he would
- 59:32Speaker 2: go to that and then it continued with Ken Hitchcock
- 59:34Speaker 2: when he was briefly the coach, Dave Tippett did it,
- 59:37Speaker 2: much to the chagrin of a lot of the fans.
- 59:39Speaker 2: Right Croft kind of went away from it early and
- 59:42Speaker 2: then went right back to it. I mean, it's it's
- 59:45Speaker 2: the default, you know, break glass in case of emergency
- 59:49Speaker 2: type of play, and I think it's always going to
- 59:51Speaker 2: be the case when these guys are on the same
- 59:53Speaker 2: team together for the part their careers.
- 59:56Speaker 5: That's hard from a players standpoint too, Like externally to
- 59:59Speaker 5: the media, they're I was going to say, hey, I'm
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: happy to be playing with so and so great hockey player,
- 1:00:03Speaker 5: but I think internally, as a player, you want some consistency.
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: I'm not saying for eighty two games, but gosh, it'd
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: be nice for twenty games to have the same wingers
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: you know, don't work with, to get some chemistry with.
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: And when that's changing constantly, like oh, our center is
- 1:00:17Speaker 5: going to play with McDavid for a few shifts. Oh
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: they're out killing penalties, so someone else is going to
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: be my center on the next ship. That's hard to
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: get some flow going in a game, and certainly over
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: a bunch of games doesn't. It doesn't give you any chemistry.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: No, And you can tell when they're out there with
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: anyone else or on their line from the morning rush
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: that day, they're just like, well, those guys don't look
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: like they have any any flow together whatsoever, and it
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: shouldn't be a surprise at all. So Leon Dreysaddle even
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: made a joke about it doesn't matter what we skate
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: in our in our lines in the morning, because we
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: know it's going to be switched up by the time
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: we get to the game. He's joking about it. Yeah,
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: and you're going like, should you be saying that publicly?
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: And he's just saying he's spitting facts.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: So the follow up questionaire here is does even care?
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: I don't think so, you know what I mean? They
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: know it's when they get called out. Those guys they're
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: true superstars, and they just they roll with the punches.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: They've been through so much crap in this market over
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: the years, the ups and downs that I think they're
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: so just used to and and fine with handling whatever
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: is thrown at them, like all right, well, let's go
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: to work and dig dig the team out. And sometimes
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: they cause the problems too.
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: So yeah, Tom, I want to I want to switch gears,
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: and I want to enter the part of the interview
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: called tick Mike benton Off. So you cover the league,
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: you know the league, you're you're in the Pacific Division.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: The one word that we the one thing we hear
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: about the Cracking all the time. This team does not
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: have superstars. They're not exciting, they don't have this.
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: They don't have that.
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: I want to get yours.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: I'll be over here sipping coff.
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I want to get your view on the we'll
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: call it sex appeal of the Seattle Kracket. They're winning games,
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: They're off to their best start in franchise at at
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: the time of this recording. Uh, the Kracking are coming
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: off of a three to two win over Chicago in
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: which they got three goals in the third period. So,
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: last time I checked, winning is sexy. And apparently the
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: national media don't think this team is that sexy. So
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: from your opinion and from what you're hearing up north
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: and around the league's what is the general sex appeal
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: of the Seattle Cracking. Well, I like this.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: We're getting dicey here. No, No, this is good. I'm
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: I think they caught a lot of people's attention a
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: couple of years ago when they knocked the Avs out
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: of the playoffs, and that turned a lot of heads. Now,
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: like you can go up and down the roster, and
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: if you don't know the NHL or haven't paid attention
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: to it in a little while, you're probably going, well,
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: I've heard of so and so. You know, Oh Jordan Everley, Okay, yeah,
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: oh Adam Lars Like I'm pointing out for more oilers here,
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: but uh, Tanev was kind of like a cult hero
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: for a while because of his his pictures that he
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: would take prior to the start of the season.
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: But to me, when I look at the cracket, I
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: honestly just see a team of like really good players,
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: Like it looks like line one is solid, line two,
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: solid line is three, solid line four solid good defense
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: with good defense with good defense, Like I don't I
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: don't see superstars yet, Like I'm looking for Maddy Beniers
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: to become one. I like what he didn't obviously great
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: rookie year. Have they gone out and made sexy free
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: agent signings. I'm not gonna lie. I appreciate Chandler Stevenson.
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: I liked him in Vegas, Like, thank you I'm somebody
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: who's like, wow, that guy plays good hockey. I appreciate it,
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: but he's not gonna go and and rip down the
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: ice at whatever it's like thirty seven kilometers an hour
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: as we say in Canada.
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: Currently, his expected goal share is not very high, which I.
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: Don't even know expected goal share is so like I
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: read that the other night. Yeah, a lot of folks.
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: I'm not gonna call anyone out, but there's a lot
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: of people and in the media core that rely so
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: heavily on the advanced stats, and I'm like, watch the
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: guy play. I mean, like, just look open your eyes, Like, yeah, sure,
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: his advanced stats, his goal shots per sixty share cube
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: on a Thursday probably isn't that good. But watch the
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: guy play. I mean, he's one of the best players
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: every single night on the Guys. He's your best face
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: off guy. But just because his high danger thoughts per
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: twelve is not good, Like I'm sorry, I'm over it.
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: I'm over it.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: Oh well, don't get me started, because you and I
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: could have a nice argument about saves expected or oh
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: yes expected.
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: As a goalie, my expected goals against is zero. Okay,
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: because as a goalie, I expect to give up zero.
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: So I don't understand, well, is expected goals was five
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: and a half over five?
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: Do we want to push this show to three hours?
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: Like essentially with with the goal like, I'll say this
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: one thing about the goalie expected What you're telling me
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: with an equation and a Excel spreadsheet is that you're
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: not getting one or two extra saves a game that
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: you need.
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: Just say that.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: That's all you're telling me, really, and like if you
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: want to break it down to its most finite point
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: and find a way to equate it to numbers, okay,
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: But essentially you're telling me you're not getting one or
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: two extra saves a night. Your team's losing.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: There.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: It's as simple as that. So there's that. But what
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: like to come back to, like the sexiness of the
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: Seattle Crack and I have since their inception into the league,
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: I've just looked at them as a team that has
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: has built on a solid foundation and then eventually, like
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: those sexy piece is will come in, whether it's via
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: free agency or you draft a couple of studs that
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: eventually turn into two superstars. And I think that's a solid,
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: safe way to start a franchise. You're not gonna Golden
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: Knights this thing every time you have a new expansion franchise.
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: That was a lightning in a bottle situation. I know
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: they have an aggressive owner and they've they've been able.
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: They were what were they called the misfits right their
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: first year toys, Yeah, and then they they're super aggressive
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: management team is you know, moved out a lot of
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: great pieces, brought in a lot of great pieces. That's
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: it's tough to sustain that. To their credit, for the
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: most part, they have. But the way the cracket have
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: been built I can appreciate as a fan of the game,
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: someone who grew up playing it, watching covering. I just
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: eventually the Kracking will be a sexy team. And when
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: they're rattling off ten game winning streaks and have one
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: of the top players in the league or one of
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: the best goalies in the league, people will pay attention.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: And especially if they're knocking off the defending Cup champs
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: and in the first round of the playoffs.
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: In the meantime, they're gonna get points in six of seven.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: That sounds pretty good to me. And I'm not good
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: at math.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: Evidently you've already seen Edmonton has seen Dallas once this year.
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: The krack and have seen them once this year, and
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: you know they come as advertised. But as far as
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: what Dallas is doing at this point of the season,
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: and they have a lot of players who are back
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: in all of this and begins a meeko ranton in
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: to you, what are they doing that again makes them
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: such a big threat in the West.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: Man They have a lot of good pieces, Let's start
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: with that. They have a great head coach, a guy
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: have a lot of time for and Glenn Gullotson, and
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: it feels like they're no nonsense whenever they're in town
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: or we see the Oilers in Dallas, it just seems
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: like a team like, Okay, we know we're good, we
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: have a game plan that we trust, we have goalies
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: that we trust, or you know, Jake Ore being their starter.
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: That's a guy that I would look at every day
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: if I was a player, I'd be like, I think
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: we have a good chance of winning tonight. And they
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: just they've done a good job of just playing hockey
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: the right way and understanding who they are, what they are,
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: and what they're capable of. And it's pretty pretty straightforward
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: to me like, we're good. We know we're good. We
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: have the pieces. Let's go do things the right way
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: and not you know, get convoluted and full of ourselves
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: and shoot yourselves in the foot. They just to me,
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: they're very straightforward and they have the guys and the
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: horses that can get the job done and they run
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: I just I mean, and the media market there is
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: you know, you're not crazy, like in Canada. You don't
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: have people that are you know, at a gas station
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: telling you what you need.
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: To do with your for check.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: Flights.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, part of part of like, I truly believe
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: there's something to that, Like when it's like NonStop every day,
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: that could be tough, like a wear on guys, especially
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: if they're not built for this type of hockey climate.
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: And I feel like in Dallas's just everything's so nice
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: and easy, very comfortable.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: I remember seeing Alex Wenberg one time on the street
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: about three blocks away from Climate Pledge Arena, I presume
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: where he was living at an apartment complex, but it
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: was just outside walking his dog and it was right
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: by the corner of a CBS pharmacy and I thought,
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: you can't do that in Vancouver. In edminton in Calgary
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: and definitely not Toronto or Montreal.
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: Yeah, like, can you imagine just like going to the
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: rink and what are you gonna do after practice? I
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: might go hit some balls at the range. There's an
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: ease to that, and then it's like, well, you guys
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: play the best team in the league tomorrow. Yeah, but
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: we're good too, so I like our chances. It feels
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: like Dallas has that vibe every time I traveled there,
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: when I was traveling with the Oilers, I was just like,
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: this would be a great place to play, and I
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: think that kind of environment can lead to success. So
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: that's just kind of how I look at the Stars.
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: They've been good. They put the right pieces in place.
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: I think Jim Nill is a great great GM appreciate you.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: You're always welcome back here, mamble touch base again here
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: pretty soon. Thanks man.
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: Always a pleasure. All right.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: Good to hear from Tom Gazola joining us here on
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: the Beacon Plumbing Hotline again. Tommy doing great work with
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: Edmonton sports Talk radio and also with NHL Network as well.
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: I just want to touch on Dallas and Edmonton a
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: little bit, guys, as far as our own takes on
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: this Dallas, you're gonna get the first game back from
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: Miko Ranton and after the one game suspension, and then Edmonton.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: I mean, hey, hockey players have long memories, and you're
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: gonna get a team that is still, you know, a
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: bit top seed turvy. They they laid the hammer down
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: on Florida to end their road trip here, but I
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: would bet that they're remembering how this first matchup went
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: back in late October. So you've got Dallas, who is
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: playing terrific hockey right now. You've got Edmonton who just
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: it seems like they're always one or two big games
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: away from flipping the switch despite their goaltending issues. What
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: makes you confident? What's your biggest concern here for these
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: two games coming up.
- 1:10:59Speaker 5: I think just in the same way that Edmonton is
- 1:11:02Speaker 5: going to think about the last time they came together
- 1:11:04Speaker 5: with the Crack and the next time they play, I
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: think it'll be the same for the Cracket. In that
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: Dallas game, that two to one lost down in Dallas,
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: they had thirty one shots on goal, which you know
- 1:11:13Speaker 5: see above, that's a high not a high water mark,
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: but that's a high amount of shots for this team.
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: But they still came out on the short end of
- 1:11:19Speaker 5: the sticks. So for the same reasons, they're going to
- 1:11:21Speaker 5: want to get that get that one back and and
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: equalize that series.
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I think with Dallas. You know, the for Seattle,
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: I mean, Dallas is coming off of a back to back.
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: They'll be in Edmonton on Tuesday, and the crackett are
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: now too eight and three against teams in game twos
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: of back to backs since last season, So you're trying
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: to buck that trend. I think. I think Dallas now,
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: you know, they've got I've got what two four, six,
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: one and one in their last eight games, seven to
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: two and one in their last ten. I mean, that's
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: gonna be the toughest one for me for the Edmonton Oilers.
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: I mean, listen, I said this last week, and the
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: saving grace is that these these standings are pretty bunched
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: up here as I pull up the standing sheet. So
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: Seattle right now sitting in second place at twenty eight points,
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: Edmonton three back at twenty five, They're tied with San
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: Jose one back of LA. You're getting to a point
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: in the season and maybe in another four weeks, maybe
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: we get to the Christmas break You're getting to a
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: point this season where the teams behind you are going
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: to have to start going on runs if they want
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: to keep pace, if they want to keep up, they're
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: gonna have to win five of six, they're gonna have
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: to win seven of ten, whatever it is. Edmonton's coming
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: off with seven out of fourteen points on this last
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: seven game road trip, right, I don't think that's good
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: enough for Edmonton. And you're right, Mike. The second you think,
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: all right, the Oilers have figured this out, then did
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: they lose a game? Maybe they shouldn't have lost on
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: that road trip. They were two three and one in
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: those six games, right, so that that are two three,
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: three and one, sorry, those in those seven games. I
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: don't think that's good enough for this team. And and
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: goaltending still continues to be an issue, But I'm not
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: gonna say that it's a must win. But I think
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: if you're trying to prove that this Kraken team has
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: taken that next step, if you want to try to
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: silence a lot of those voices that are saying this
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: team's not sexy enough, they can't score enough, they're a
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: paper tiger. This team's not gonna do it. You gotta
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: beat Dallas in game two of a back to back,
- 1:13:38Speaker 3: and you have to beat Edmonton again in a matinee,
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: and you're building you know, are these must win games
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: this week? I don't think we're there yet, but I
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: think they are definitely you probably should win these games.
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: I mean minimum three out of four points. You beat
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: one and then you lose another overtime shootout whatever. Of
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: these two games this week, you need three points.
- 1:14:02Speaker 5: Minimally, and something in common in both of those games
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: that the Kracking have played against Dallas Edmonton as of
- 1:14:09Speaker 5: late that the Cracking we're zero for three on the
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: power play in both games. They've got to be better
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: on the power play. I'm not saying it's got to
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: be three for three, but they're going to be able
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: to get a power play goal if they're given three
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: opportunities in a game, at least in one of those games.
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: That's going to push them over the top.
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: Let's get to our mailbag segment here, as we promise again,
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: you can find the Krack and Audio Network at Crack
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: and Audio Net, myself at and Underscore, Mike Everetts at
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: the Voice fits Alconiski is at Alconiski as well. First
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: question here from gort One saying, what priority do you
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: believe the crack in front office are placing on making
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: a playoff run this year? Meaning are they willing to
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: sell potential long term assets or top draft capital to
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: add a short term piece that helps secure a playoff
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: spot here for this season. I go back and tee
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: it up here for you guys by saying it's early.
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: There are no names out there being dangled, and again
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: we heard a lot about maybe Tage Thompson, but the
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: Sabers are saying he's not going to be available. But
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: here's again the tricky part, because you're facing right now
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: a season where you're playing above expectations and the low
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: bar was to just be in the mix, and you're
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: pushing for a division you know you're pushing for number
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: one right now in your own division. How much do
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: you want to disrupt the core with what is making
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: this happen right now? How much do you want to
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: give up future pieces that might be helpful years upon
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: years down the road, like they have said they want
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: to put into place.
- 1:15:45Speaker 5: I think you do a little bit of scratching at that.
- 1:15:48Speaker 5: You're obviously not calling thirty one teams, but maybe you're
- 1:15:52Speaker 5: a little selective and you're making a few phone calls
- 1:15:55Speaker 5: to a few particular gms to find.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: It because we all know what they need, right yeah,
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: right right?
- 1:16:00Speaker 5: And and I think this team doesn't need goaltending, they
- 1:16:02Speaker 5: don't need defenseman, they need a top six forward. The
- 1:16:06Speaker 5: question is going to be what do you have to
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: give up to get that to get that top six forward?
- 1:16:10Speaker 5: And who is that top six forward? But I think
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: scratching the surface a little bit to find out if
- 1:16:15Speaker 5: that top six forward is out there and what it
- 1:16:17Speaker 5: would take to get them is worth the phone call.
- 1:16:20Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean you're always going to listen, you're always
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: going to inquire. But Al said it perfectly, and I
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: said it last year. Everybody loves to say crack and
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: should go get this guy, crack and should go get
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: that guy. Okay, Well, let's work the problem backwards. If
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: you were another team, who on this crack and roster
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: would you want? And those are the guys that you're
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: going to have to give up to get that piece.
- 1:16:43Speaker 3: So if it doesn't make in my opinion, if it
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: doesn't make your team better but demonstrably better, then then
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: I think you know, it's not worth it. The mission
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: has always been since day one. This is a marathon,
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: it's not a sprint. You know, you do you have
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: a lot of prospects in the cupboard. I am interested
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: to see with all of the centerman at least as
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: of right now centerman that we have in this organization.
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: You know, do one of the prospects get floated that
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: we haven't seen yet? You know a lot of potential.
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: Do you sell high on potential? I've always wondered that,
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: but it's got to make sense and right now for
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: what you would have to give up off this current
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: roster unless you're bringing back a forty goal scorer, unless
- 1:17:31Speaker 3: you're bringing Miko Rannon, unless you're bringing Zach Hyman. Right,
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: I'm just picking out guys who you know that can score,
- 1:17:40Speaker 3: unless you're going to bring back, you know, Martin Ahius,
- 1:17:43Speaker 3: one of those type of players. I don't see a
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: trade worth it. I don't see a deal just to
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: make a deal worth it.
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: You only have three options. You've got you've got draft picks,
- 1:17:55Speaker 5: you've got prospects, and you've got current players.
- 1:17:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:17:58Speaker 5: Right, So it's some combination of and I think when
- 1:18:00Speaker 5: you're talking about draft picks and prospects, it's a little
- 1:18:03Speaker 5: bit less painful, certainly on the draft pick side because
- 1:18:06Speaker 5: you don't know who that is. But when you start
- 1:18:09Speaker 5: talking about prospects, especially you know, the players that I
- 1:18:12Speaker 5: think this organization is expecting to see in cracking jerseys
- 1:18:15Speaker 5: in coming years, that gets a little more painful. And
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: you know, you start talking about top pairing defenseman to
- 1:18:22Speaker 5: get top line forwards, that's a little bit painful. So
- 1:18:24Speaker 5: it really just depends on what that other team is
- 1:18:27Speaker 5: looking for.
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: And say, I'll say this too also fits if I
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: can tee it up for you and kind of bridge
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: all of this. It really depends upon how much how
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: far do you want to go to add all these
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: big pieces again, because it depends upon you know, how
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: you weigh the kind of window that you're in. Are
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: they in a win now window like Vegas the answer
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: is no, Like Toronto the answer is no. Like Edminton
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: the answer is no. So it really kind of begs
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: a team to weigh these out and say, what's the
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: best we can maximize this season without giving up the
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: long term window that we want to get to down
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: the road.
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I mean, and listen, if we knew this
- 1:19:08Speaker 3: cracking team was one or two pieces away from being
- 1:19:11Speaker 3: a cup team, then get fine. You know, we'll make
- 1:19:14Speaker 3: that decision. But I think I want to have this
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: conversation January tenth, when hopefully Jared McCann has been back
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: for six weeks, hopefully, when Coppol Cocko's been back for
- 1:19:25Speaker 3: six weeks hopefully, right, I want to have this conversation
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: when you get those two guys back and they're contributing
- 1:19:35Speaker 3: on a nightly basis, and see what you still need,
- 1:19:38Speaker 3: because again, January tenth, you're going on that long road
- 1:19:43Speaker 3: trip out east. Let's say, let's say, hypothetically speaking, hypothetical speaking,
- 1:19:48Speaker 3: Jared McCann, Coppol Coco have been back for four weeks. Okay,
- 1:19:53Speaker 3: let's say in four weeks they each have ten goals
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: and you know, pick your number of assists. Well, then
- 1:19:59Speaker 3: there's your problem, right, there's a half a goal of
- 1:20:00Speaker 3: game you got back. Now you are a three goal team,
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: you're a three to one team, a four to two
- 1:20:06Speaker 3: team as opposed to a two to one team. Then
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: maybe you're going into the deadline, you're looking at your
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: assets and say, okay, maybe we don't need to be
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: as active as we should be, or maybe we can
- 1:20:16Speaker 3: afford to get rid of these pieces to bring someone
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: else in. But if you're still waiting on a McCann
- 1:20:22Speaker 3: or a couple of Cocko to come back again, this
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: is a hypothetical scenario, then your needs change. So after
- 1:20:30Speaker 3: the new year, when the crack can go on that
- 1:20:32Speaker 3: long trip out east to New York, I think then
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: we can maybe start to have that conversation of all right,
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: who in your top who in your middle six to
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: bottom six are you willing to part with? Who in
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: your bottom payer defense, in your top prospect pool, in
- 1:20:50Speaker 3: your draft pool? Who are you willing to part with
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: in order to get that piece you need right now?
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: So let's wait and let's have this conversation and again
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: when you know, hopefully when you have those guys back
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: in your lineup.
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: One from Daniel on Twitter and next saying is the
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: Yannie Newman, Shane right, Berkeley Catton line. A thing I
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: noticed they were on the ice together while listening to
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: the radio broadcast Plus one. Daniel, thank you very much.
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: Wasn't sure if that was a temporary situation or not.
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: What are your thoughts on the kid lines? I think again,
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: you want to maximize your playing time here, But again
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: this goes back to if you do this from a
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: full scale, permanent situation, Yannie Newman, Shane Right, Berkeley Catton
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: are only staying there together as long as Lane Lambert
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: has enough trust and confidence for them to be effective
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: at both ends of the ice heavy emphasis here defensively
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: as well, and you're not putting your team at risk.
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think as we've seen with Lane Lambert,
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: he is very trusting in the groupings that he puts together.
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: I didn't hate that line. I thought they did a
- 1:21:58Speaker 3: lot of really good things, uh in that game. But
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: I do think I don't know if we're going to
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: see that line together to start a game or or
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: for a lot because of what you just said, right,
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: I mean, you need to have the trust there. I
- 1:22:15Speaker 3: think as as Newman and Right and and Berkeley Catten,
- 1:22:20Speaker 3: as they continue to to grow into their roles, I
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: think you're going to see a lot more of that.
- 1:22:26Speaker 3: But I wouldn't quote unquote call it a thing yet,
- 1:22:29Speaker 3: but I will say I didn't mind what I saw
- 1:22:32Speaker 3: when they were together.
- 1:22:33Speaker 5: Yeah, when you look at the bottom six from that game,
- 1:22:35Speaker 5: Catten with Newman and Gudrou in the middle, and Kara
- 1:22:39Speaker 5: with Bright and Winterton. Gadreu is the old man of
- 1:22:42Speaker 5: those six, He's the guy that's in his thirties, and
- 1:22:46Speaker 5: the rest of the rest of those guys are still kids.
- 1:22:48Speaker 5: They're there, they're they're not that far out of out
- 1:22:52Speaker 5: of Coachella. They're coming up. So it's tough to just
- 1:22:55Speaker 5: take three of them call them the kid line, not
- 1:22:57Speaker 5: bottom six, as young as a group right now. Yes,
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: can all change when Compococco and jere McCann come back,
- 1:23:04Speaker 5: But for right now, I think Lee Lambert is trying
- 1:23:06Speaker 5: to find the right combination of those six people that
- 1:23:09Speaker 5: puts the best players on the ice and generates more
- 1:23:12Speaker 5: shooting opportunities, more scoring opportunities. And you know, for a
- 1:23:16Speaker 5: guy like Berkeley Catt and I think we're learning. I
- 1:23:20Speaker 5: think I've seen enough to learn that he probably can
- 1:23:23Speaker 5: be effective on the wing as well as in the middle.
- 1:23:25Speaker 5: And I'm okay with him being on the wing right now.
- 1:23:27Speaker 5: I think we've seen Shane Wright on the wing. So
- 1:23:30Speaker 5: to have guys that can be utility players like that,
- 1:23:33Speaker 5: to say I can go wing or center. Let let's
- 1:23:36Speaker 5: put the best two lines on the ice that we
- 1:23:39Speaker 5: can that makes them more valuable.
- 1:23:41Speaker 3: And I think too this all goes this could all
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: be tied back into the trade conversation, asset conversation, because
- 1:23:49Speaker 3: right now, organizationally, you're looking at Matty bine Er, Shane Wright,
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: Chandler Steves and Berkeley Kat and jac O'Brien. There's five
- 1:23:56Speaker 3: centers right there, right all five of those guys potentially
- 1:24:01Speaker 3: could be should be top to at worst top three centiment.
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: So if you can move Catton to the wing, we've
- 1:24:08Speaker 3: seen Shane Wright play the wing a little bit, it
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: opens yourself up to a lot more possibilities, like you
- 1:24:15Speaker 3: just said, down the road, and you can find a
- 1:24:18Speaker 3: place for all of those players who you expect to
- 1:24:22Speaker 3: be big point guys for a generation to come. You
- 1:24:26Speaker 3: don't have to beg the question, well man, this guy
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: can only play center. I'd really like it if you
- 1:24:32Speaker 3: could play the wing. But he can't, Well, now you
- 1:24:34Speaker 3: have to move him out, or now you have to
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: put him on our fourth line because we need to
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: find room for him on the roster because he can't
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: play wing. I love Berkeley Katton on the wing. I
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: think he's looked good there. I think Shane Wright has
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: shown some promise on the wing as well, but he's
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: had to play on that side. I'm all for trying
- 1:24:50Speaker 3: these guys out, and I'm all for that flexibility to
- 1:24:55Speaker 3: plug and play guys where you need them.
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: Time to get to our three stars here for this
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: past week, and I'll start off once again. My third
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: star is going to go to Riker Evans, who has
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: been a revelation offensively so far through his first eight games.
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: Didn't score in the Islander game. No one did, matter
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: of fact, but six points first eight games and it
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: was a tough offensive week. But guess it was your
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: leading scorer for this past week. It was him four
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: points four games. Could you have seen this year from
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: Riker Evans? It was something special? And then you go
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: to the Islander game as well, after he had a
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: pair of assists in that win. In a thriller at Pittsburgh,
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: he had two block shots, had a hit as well.
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: In nineteen minutes and forty one seconds of ice time.
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: Unless your name is Adam Larson, Brandon Montour or Vince Dunn,
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: that's your most hused defenseman on this roster. At nineteen
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: forty one, he was reliable he's been dependable, and I
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: think he's been terrific here and this road trip showed
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: me a little bit more. As far as what you
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: want out of Ryker Evans your second star, my pick
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: is Matty Benier's. If you can get more of what
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: you got out out of the Pittsburgh game, you're going
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: to be in business with this guy helping drive your
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: line as your number one center. And the more and
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: more that you can get timely goals like you got
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: from him out in period three is defensive game which
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: continues here to improve more and more if you can
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: kind of coax face off wins as well from him.
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: Didn't have maybe the most ideal dig against the Islanders,
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: but he's showing more and more of the kind of
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: player that he wants to turn into. He had grade
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: five on five shot attempt metrics and both wins at
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: Chicago and Pittsburgh incremental improvements are right now for me.
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: What defianes Matty Beniers in the first star number one,
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: it's goal attending. I couldn't give it to one guy.
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: I had to give it here to both. Joey Decord
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: rebounded after a subpar game against Detroit. Looked great after
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: the first period against Chicago and was as good as
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: you can ask in the Islander game, where unfortunately he
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: had no offensive support. There's not many leaky goals getting
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: by Joey. That's a good thing. And there have been
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: rare goals that we have seen recently that gru Bauer
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: has given up. And if you can get the kind
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: of defense that they can build around for gru Bauer
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: to spell the cord when he's got to take a seat,
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: you're in business. And so far goaltending is helping drive
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: this bus here on the cracking side. First our effort
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: combining here to both Joey, to Courd and Philip Greenbauer.
- 1:27:24Speaker 5: So some of the same names. For me, Mikey, I
- 1:27:26Speaker 5: had Matty Veneers as my third star, points in three
- 1:27:29Speaker 5: of five games, fifth on the team, and shot blocks
- 1:27:32Speaker 5: right now, that really surprises me. I wouldn't have guessed
- 1:27:35Speaker 5: that he'd be in the in the in the top
- 1:27:37Speaker 5: five for blocking shots in this team last year. So
- 1:27:40Speaker 5: twenty two on the season so far. And by the way,
- 1:27:42Speaker 5: the four guys that are above him all defenseman, so
- 1:27:46Speaker 5: defense defense, and then it's Matti Mniir. So you know,
- 1:27:50Speaker 5: a leader to me is someone that obviously is getting
- 1:27:52Speaker 5: the job done offensively when you need to, but also
- 1:27:55Speaker 5: sacrificing himself. We've seen that in the on the on
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: the road trip for sure. Second star, I'm going to
- 1:28:01Speaker 5: give it to Grubauer. I really wanted to give him
- 1:28:03Speaker 5: the first Star, but I think that misplayed puck behind
- 1:28:06Speaker 5: the net in Pittsburgh knocked him down a spot. Still
- 1:28:09Speaker 5: my second star. He's got a nine to one six
- 1:28:11Speaker 5: save percentage over the last four games. He's been playing great.
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: He relieved Matt Murray in that in that center of
- 1:28:16Speaker 5: a game. Uh two point sixty six goals against average
- 1:28:20Speaker 5: and the over the over, the the four, the three,
- 1:28:23Speaker 5: the three starts he's had. I really like the way
- 1:28:26Speaker 5: he's played played. I just don't want him to think
- 1:28:29Speaker 5: that he always has to play the puck, because Joey
- 1:28:32Speaker 5: always plays the puck. Do what you do best, stop pucks,
- 1:28:35Speaker 5: and I think you're fine there. My number one star
- 1:28:38Speaker 5: is Joey Decord. Two point two goals against average in
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: his last five starts nine oh three in that same series,
- 1:28:45Speaker 5: plus the shutout in Long Island. Shutouts are always things
- 1:28:48Speaker 5: that stand out for me for goaltenders. Being able to
- 1:28:51Speaker 5: keep that zero up on the board to give his chance,
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: his team a chance to win with this one goal.
- 1:28:55Speaker 5: That's huge. He's my number one star.
- 1:28:57Speaker 3: Yeah, this one was a little tough for me. There
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: were all a lot of areas, a lot of ways
- 1:29:02Speaker 3: I could have gone with this one. I think my
- 1:29:06Speaker 3: for me, my my number one star or my my
- 1:29:10Speaker 3: number three star. I'm going to go cracking defense overall.
- 1:29:14Speaker 3: I think in the in the three games on the road,
- 1:29:18Speaker 3: the four games on the road, you only allow eight
- 1:29:21Speaker 3: goals in those four games. So I defensively, especially in
- 1:29:27Speaker 3: game two against the Islanders, I mean I couldn't single
- 1:29:30Speaker 3: out one person because they all played so well. They
- 1:29:33Speaker 3: were all blocking shots, like you said, even though Matty Benier's,
- 1:29:36Speaker 3: you know, was a ford. I'm just gonna go the
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: sixth defenseman. Those are my that's my number three star.
- 1:29:42Speaker 3: This was a hard one for me. But I'm gonna
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: give Mason Marshmiant my number two star. I think that
- 1:29:48Speaker 3: I'm giving I'm giving Marshman my number two star. He
- 1:29:50Speaker 3: has quietly been putting together points in four of his
- 1:29:54Speaker 3: last six games. He had a goal and two assists
- 1:29:56Speaker 3: on the trip. He had some good looks in that
- 1:29:59Speaker 3: game against the other night, so I'm gonna be amort.
- 1:30:04Speaker 3: He had the important goal, the very important goal again
- 1:30:07Speaker 3: against Pittsburgh, unforgettable, Selly and an onforgettable. I think the
- 1:30:12Speaker 3: celebration is why I'm giving Mason marsh Remember two stars.
- 1:30:16Speaker 3: And then and then Mike I felt I was terrible.
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: Three me three, me three.
- 1:30:22Speaker 3: I felt so bad for laughing, but it was just
- 1:30:25Speaker 3: I needed to put the Benny Hill music to it right.
- 1:30:28Speaker 3: Just but he got the goal and again plus two
- 1:30:32Speaker 3: on the week. I'm gonna I'm gonna give it to
- 1:30:33Speaker 3: to march Man and then again I'm with you, Mikey
- 1:30:36Speaker 3: my number one star. I couldn't single either one of
- 1:30:39Speaker 3: them out. Joey gets the shutout. Grubauer made massive saves
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: this week. I'm gonna go goaltending as I think I've
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: done twice already as my number one overall star of
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: the week.
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: Thanksgiving plans. We know who's coming over. Fitz has got
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: the party of the thing about sixty four going over there.
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: Al's got to believe the intimate gathering. I got the
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: intimate gathering as well. So as far as food on
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: the table, if you could pick one big one or
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: one's gotta go. I'll go with this one. We have
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: tried turkey and ham over and over. We love it.
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: But my kids won't eat turkey, and my ten year
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: old has asked, can we try steaks? I love steak,
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: Amy love steaks. My seven year old will try it.
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: It's going down here for Thanksgiving New York's trips, my
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: dad's mac and cheese. I don't think we're going with
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: the canned yams though. That one's gotta go. But we're
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: doing roasted sweet potatoes on top of that.
- 1:31:39Speaker 5: I think about the question a little bit differently, Mike.
- 1:31:42Speaker 5: I think about it if I sat down at the
- 1:31:44Speaker 5: table and I started looking around, what's the one dish
- 1:31:47Speaker 5: that I would be like, this is ridiculous, I'm leaving.
- 1:31:51Speaker 5: If it wasn't on the table, and you know what,
- 1:31:53Speaker 5: for me, that would be the gravy.
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: Gravy.
- 1:31:57Speaker 5: Listen, Turkey's turkey. We haven't a couple of times a year,
- 1:32:00Speaker 5: no one goes, oh the turkey, it's the best in
- 1:32:02Speaker 5: the world. Like it's usually pretty good, but you got
- 1:32:04Speaker 5: to have the gravy on top. I love stuffing. I'll
- 1:32:06Speaker 5: eat stuffing from anybody's table like a little bit. I
- 1:32:10Speaker 5: like a little bit of gravy on. I'll put the
- 1:32:11Speaker 5: gravy on the beans. I don't care. I want the
- 1:32:13Speaker 5: gravy on the table. The gravy has to be on
- 1:32:15Speaker 5: the table. The one dish that I could do without.
- 1:32:18Speaker 5: I don't need marshmallows on top of my vegetables, Like
- 1:32:20Speaker 5: I just still need those things. Just invented that, by
- 1:32:23Speaker 5: the way, someone that didn't like vegetables.
- 1:32:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I love. I make a really good sweet potata
- 1:32:30Speaker 3: casserole and it calls for marshmallows, and I will.
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: That's different though.
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: No, no, no, I've put I've put I've put nia
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: marshmallow on my castle. I'm with you, I am in
- 1:32:44Speaker 3: the Turkey is supremely overrated category. I will still eat it.
- 1:32:49Speaker 3: It just gets dry at it. You can baste it,
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: you can put all the stuffing you want, you can
- 1:32:55Speaker 3: put all the juice needles you want into it. It
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: still is overrated. I think we're gonna that's butter. Yeah,
- 1:33:02Speaker 3: all right, I've done the champagne glazer, all the gravy
- 1:33:07Speaker 3: in the world. It's still dry. So I think turkey's overrated.
- 1:33:10Speaker 3: The one food that I can do without on Thanksgiving,
- 1:33:13Speaker 3: and it's not if it's there, I'm gonna eat it,
- 1:33:15Speaker 3: but like, I don't need it mashed potatoes. Like I
- 1:33:19Speaker 3: like mashed potatoes, but I think between the sweet potatoes,
- 1:33:23Speaker 3: between the stuff ping and the greens and the macaroni
- 1:33:25Speaker 3: and cheese, I got enough starch on my plate, and
- 1:33:28Speaker 3: mashed potatoes just takes up a lot of unnecessary room.
- 1:33:32Speaker 3: I'm not gonna not eat them. But if someone's like, hey,
- 1:33:35Speaker 3: we don't really need mat ptatoes, I'm like, great, neither
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: do I.
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: My turkey goes in there anyway. If I'm having turkey,
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: something else goes in there. Butter goes in there. You
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: just can't eat it straight up. And I will at
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: least say this with turkey, you can make sandwich this year,
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: but eventually it just goes all into my dad's mac
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: and cheese at the very end of it.
- 1:33:53Speaker 3: We're doing a big ham for Thanksgiving this year.
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: Oh love it, love it. And as far as take
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: is concerned, folks, if you're asking me medium, I'm rare.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: The only way to go unless you ask. My wife
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: loves it well done. She will not have it any
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: other way, and she is completely unapologetic about it.
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: There's anything wrong or if you're Alkiniski. You want it blue.
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: Still it's still moving, just.
- 1:34:19Speaker 5: Taking the fridge ten minutes for weed. I'm good.
- 1:34:21Speaker 3: That's it. That's it, that's it.
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: Looking forward to this. It's nice to have a little
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: bit of time off here with some balance. We're gonna
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: start craving hockey again here pretty soon, but just two
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: games here for this week. All around Thanksgiving. Al had
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: a nice seguae. It's Gravy Boat Night, by the way,
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: plus the third Jersey Night going down here for Wednesday.
