  It is the 13th of March and I'd like you to cast your minds

  back, cast them all the way back, all the way back even

  further, all the way back to 1877, haha.

  It was a big year in the world of in the world of patents.
• 0:33
  You know, there was a guy named Chester Greenwood who, when he
• 0:36
  was 15 years old, thought wouldn't it be cool if you could
• 0:39
  strap something to your head that would stop noise getting in
• 0:41
  your ears. And so he made himself two big
• 0:44
  cushiony things strapped to an Alice band, popped on his head
• 0:48
  and lo and behold, it was the first pair of ear muffs.
• 0:51
  And years later in 1877, he patented them.
• 0:56
  That's right. You should see the original
• 0:57
  patent documents. They are fantastic.
• 1:00
  You know, they have got a picture of an Alice band and two
• 1:04
  things screwed to the end of it and it's got, you know, all the
• 1:07
  different aspects of it labelled.

  It's actually genius. Who knew that there was actually
• 1:12
  a person who invented and patented things that we just pop
• 1:16
  on our heads to use power tools or when our children are being
• 1:19
  noisy or whatever it is that makes you wear ear muffs.

  Although I guess these days we just put a little noise
• 1:24
  cancelling buds in our ears and disappear into our music or
• 1:28
  whatever we listening to. Maybe you are even listening to
• 1:31
  this on your very own noise cancelling earmuffs or earbuds.

  Ha, what a world we live in. Well that is on this day a long
• 1:39
  time ago, but how about this year, this moment today?
• 1:44
  This is the next moment in the journey that we are taking
• 1:48
  through the book of Mark as we step through went toward Easter
• 1:52
  today. Yes, we have another action
• 1:54
  packed day today. Jesus heals demon possessed
• 1:58
  people. He heals people who have died.
• 2:01
  It is a big day where we can draw class.
• 2:05
  We can smell the scents, we can feel the textures, We can hear
• 2:12
  the cries. We can walk with Jesus and we
• 2:16
  can learn from Him as we read together.
• 2:20
  Mark Chapter 5. So they arrived at the other
• 2:33
  side of the lake, in the region of the Gerasenes.
• 2:37
  When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil
• 2:41
  spirit came out of the tombs to meet him.
• 2:45
  This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be
• 2:48
  restrained, even with a chain. Whenever he was put into chains
• 2:52
  and shackles, as he often was, he snapped the chains from his
• 2:57
  wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to
• 3:01
  subdue him. Day and night he wandered among
• 3:04
  the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting
• 3:08
  himself with sharp stones. When Jesus was still some
• 3:13
  distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low
• 3:17
  before him. With a shriek he screamed.
• 3:21
  Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, son of the Most High God,
• 3:27
  In the name of God, I beg you, don't torture me, For Jesus had
• 3:32
  already said to the Spirit, come out of the man, you evil spirit.
• 3:38
  Then Jesus demanded, what is your name?
• 3:41
  And he replied, My name is legion, because there are many
• 3:46
  of us inside this man. Then the evil spirits begged him
• 3:51
  again and again not to send them to some distant place.
• 3:55
  There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the
• 3:58
  hillside nearby. Send us into those pigs, the
• 4:02
  spirits begged. Let us enter them.
• 4:05
  So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of the
• 4:09
  man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of about 2000
• 4:15
  pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and
• 4:19
  drowned in the water. The herdsmen fled to a nearby
• 4:23
  town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news.
• 4:26
  As they ran, people rushed out to see what had happened.
• 4:30
  A crowd soon gathered around Jesus and they saw the man who
• 4:34
  had been possessed by the legion of demons.
• 4:36
  He was sitting there, fully clothed and perfectly sane, and
• 4:41
  they were all afraid. Then those who had seen what
• 4:45
  happened told the others about the demon possessed man and the
• 4:48
  pigs, and the crowd began pleading with Jesus to go away
• 4:52
  and leave them alone. As Jesus was getting into the
• 4:56
  boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him.
• 5:00
  But Jesus said, no, go home to your family and tell them
• 5:06
  everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful He has
• 5:09
  been. So the man started off to visit
• 5:12
  the 10 towns of that region and began to proclaim the great
• 5:17
  things Jesus had done for him, and everyone was amazed at what
• 5:21
  he told them. Jesus got into the boat again
• 5:27
  and went back to the other side of the lake, where a large crowd
• 5:31
  gathered around him on the shore.
• 5:33
  Then a leader of the local synagogue, his name was Gyrus,
• 5:37
  arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at
• 5:40
  his feet, pleading fervently with him.
• 5:43
  My little daughter is dying, he said.
• 5:46
  Please come and lay your hands on her.
• 5:49
  Heal her so she can live. Jesus went with him and all the
• 5:55
  people followed, crowding around him.
• 5:58
  A woman in the crowd had suffered for 12 years with
• 6:01
  constant bleeding. She had suffered a great deal
• 6:05
  from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything
• 6:09
  she had to pay them. But she had gotten no better.
• 6:13
  In fact, she had gotten worse. She had heard about Jesus, so
• 6:18
  she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe.
• 6:21
  For she thought to herself, if I can just touch his robe, I would
• 6:27
  be healed immediately. The bleeding stopped and she
• 6:32
  could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible
• 6:35
  condition. Jesus realised at once that
• 6:39
  healing power had gone out of him, so he turned around in the
• 6:42
  crowd and asked who touched my robe?
• 6:46
  His disciples said to him. Look at this crowd pressing
• 6:49
  around you. How can you ask who touched me?
• 6:53
  But he kept on looking around to see who had done it.
• 6:56
  Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realisation of
• 7:00
  what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front
• 7:04
  of him and told him what she had done.
• 7:07
  And he said to her daughter, your faith has made you well, go
• 7:12
  in peace. Your suffering is over.
• 7:17
  While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the
• 7:20
  home of Gyrus, the leader of the synagogue.
• 7:23
  They told him your daughter is dead.
• 7:26
  There's no use troubling the teacher now, but Jesus overheard
• 7:30
  them and said to Cyrus, don't be afraid, just have faith.
• 7:36
  Then Jesus stopped the crowd and wouldn't let anyone go with him
• 7:39
  except Peter, James and John, the brother of James.
• 7:44
  When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw
• 7:47
  much commotion and weeping and wailing, he went inside and
• 7:52
  asked why all this commotion and weeping?
• 7:56
  The child isn't dead, she's only asleep.
• 8:00
  The crowd laughed at him, but he made them all leave, and he took
• 8:04
  the girl's father and mother and his three disciples into the
• 8:08
  room where the girl was lying, holding her hand.
• 8:11
  He said to her. Talitha Come, which means little
• 8:17
  girl get up. And the girl who was 12 years
• 8:21
  old, immediately stood up and walked around.
• 8:26
  They were overwhelmed and totally amazed.
• 8:30
  Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what had
• 8:33
  happened, and then he told them to give us something to eat.
• 8:47
  Jesus, you are a mighty mighty God, legions of demons.
• 8:55
  Even death itself is incapable of offering any resistance to
• 9:02
  your will. Lord, help us remember that we
• 9:07
  do not worship a small or benign God, but we worship you, the
• 9:14
  author of life itself and all that exists.
• 9:20
  Thank you that not only do you wield all this power, but you
• 9:25
  wield it with gentleness and compassion, even compassion for
• 9:31
  those evil spirits and where they would end up chases.
• 9:38
  You Teach us a whole new way of being, and we are amazed by you.
• 9:46
  Continue to walk with us. Continue to grow in us your
• 9:51
  spirit and the fruits of your spirit so that we can be more
• 9:55
  like you. Thank you for your love.

  Thank you for coming to Earth so that we can know what you are
• 10:03
  like, that you are good, that you are kind, and that's your
• 10:08
  heart breaks for us. Your beloved people, me, each
• 10:15
  person praying right now. We are your beloved people.
