- 1:48Speaker 1: Good morning everybody, and welcome to a brand new day.
- 1:53Speaker 1: It's nice to have you on board. Thanks for catching
- 1:55Speaker 1: the aired Out podcast. We're live on North Main Street
- 1:59Speaker 1: in Barry, streamed everywhere you get your podcasts, and of
- 2:03Speaker 1: course on the web at aired out vt dot com.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Looking at that a beautiful day today. As I said yesterday,
- 2:12Speaker 1: there's really no change up here in the forecast. It
- 2:14Speaker 1: is going to be sunny and hovering into the low
- 2:19Speaker 1: to mid seventies here pretty much all week and getting
- 2:23Speaker 1: a glance at this coming weekend upcoming, it is going
- 2:28Speaker 1: to be pretty much perfect. I'm not seeing anything that's
- 2:32Speaker 1: jumping out at me, which is great news for any
- 2:36Speaker 1: of you that are going to be doing anything outdoors,
- 2:39Speaker 1: whether it's stack and firewood, maybe buttoning up the roof,
- 2:44Speaker 1: doing some outdoor projects, or maybe you're going to be
- 2:48Speaker 1: involved with the fifth annual Air Paytent Memorial five K
- 2:53Speaker 1: Walk and run for pediatric cancer awareness. And with me
- 2:57Speaker 1: in the studio are my special guests Matt and Danny Smith.
- 3:01Speaker 1: It is an absolute honor to have you both in here.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you very much for having Thank you
- 3:07Speaker 1: so much for being here. You're loving this forecast for
- 3:11Speaker 1: this weekend. Absolutely, yes, you know I have to. I'm
- 3:17Speaker 1: going to be very transparent, and it admit a few
- 3:20Speaker 1: things here this morning that I don't know. It's I'm
- 3:28Speaker 1: almost embarrassed to admit I have heard of this, but
- 3:34Speaker 1: I have not taken a full grasp of exactly what
- 3:39Speaker 1: it is and what a big deal it is in
- 3:45Speaker 1: our community. And Danny, I think it was you that
- 3:50Speaker 1: kind of got on me about this, right I did.
- 3:53Speaker 2: I reached out to you on Facebook and sort of
- 3:55Speaker 2: stalked you a little bit and tell.
- 3:57Speaker 1: You I appreciate that so much. You have no idea,
- 4:00Speaker 1: because let's be honest, we all know there's a ton
- 4:04Speaker 1: of stuff that's going on in our community, absolutely and
- 4:09Speaker 1: a lot of a lot of it can fall through
- 4:12Speaker 1: the cracks. But with you, you made sure that this
- 4:17Speaker 1: was this was something that I was not only aware of,
- 4:20Speaker 1: but that I might be able to try to push
- 4:24Speaker 1: a little bit here on my platform. And I'm so
- 4:26Speaker 1: blessed that that you stayed with me and didn't let
- 4:30Speaker 1: me off the hook here because this is because seriously,
- 4:33Speaker 1: once I started looking into this, I realized what a
- 4:38Speaker 1: what a huge deal this is, and what a what
- 4:40Speaker 1: a story this is you are mom and dad. Okay, Vermonters.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Not originally wait a.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Second, not natives.
- 4:52Speaker 4: We've been here since two thousand and eighteen, so I'm
- 4:58Speaker 4: originally from New Sure, Danny's.
- 5:00Speaker 2: We're becoming Vermont, becoming Vermont.
- 5:02Speaker 4: We understand there's significant criteria of which we might get.
- 5:06Speaker 5: We're doing ours.
- 5:07Speaker 3: We're doing our best.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Second, you've you've survived the flood in Montpellier.
- 5:12Speaker 3: We did.
- 5:12Speaker 1: You're Fronors. But you have you have a young child,
- 5:21Speaker 1: boy man, young man, young man, Yes, all right, and
- 5:24Speaker 1: tell me about him.
- 5:27Speaker 2: So are older? We have We actually have two boys.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Our oldest son, Peyton, was just this amazing kid. Everything
- 5:36Speaker 2: was going fine, we were getting ready to move.
- 5:39Speaker 5: We were living in Europe.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Uh.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Matt was in the Air Force and so we're getting
- 5:45Speaker 2: ready to move. Uh And probably for about a year
- 5:49Speaker 2: before we were getting ready to move, he kept complaining
- 5:53Speaker 2: of pain and in his in his hip and his knee,
- 5:58Speaker 2: and so he played sports. So we would take him
- 6:02Speaker 2: to the doctor. Doctor said, it's just you know, he's
- 6:04Speaker 2: just overuse all of that. Finally did an MRI. They
- 6:09Speaker 2: went in and did a biopsy and found out that
- 6:11Speaker 2: it was ewing sarcoma. A type of bone cancer that
- 6:16Speaker 2: was initially they thought just in his right leg. Immediately,
- 6:22Speaker 2: the Air Force amazingly said, we've got to get you
- 6:25Speaker 2: guys back now. We don't have time to wait.
- 6:29Speaker 1: And you were both in the Air Force.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Yes, I'm a reservist and so I was working at
- 6:35Speaker 2: Ramsin Air Base and he was working at the NATO
- 6:37Speaker 2: base there in Germany, and so we were getting ready
- 6:42Speaker 2: to come. His next assignment was at Norwich University as
- 6:45Speaker 2: the Air Force RTC Commander, and so we had planned
- 6:49Speaker 2: on moving back to you know, back to New England anyways,
- 6:53Speaker 2: and when we started looking around, we everyone felt like
- 6:57Speaker 2: the best care could be had at MASS in Boston,
- 7:00Speaker 2: that there's just so many, you know, so many great
- 7:03Speaker 2: doctors and programs there. So on a plane we got
- 7:07Speaker 2: on the plane and headed back, and immediately within that afternoon,
- 7:13Speaker 2: after we got off of the plane from Germany, we
- 7:17Speaker 2: went to MASS Gen they started doing the testing. By
- 7:20Speaker 2: that next week he had started his initial treatments.
- 7:23Speaker 5: So we we were.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Living in a hotel and a residence in sponsored by
- 7:28Speaker 2: the Fisher House, and you know, he was coming back
- 7:31Speaker 2: and forth up here to go to Norwich for work,
- 7:34Speaker 2: and we were just kind of doing what we doing
- 7:37Speaker 2: what we could to get his treatment done.
- 7:39Speaker 5: That was our main focus.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Now, what about your other boy?
- 7:42Speaker 2: So, our younger son has been through all of this
- 7:46Speaker 2: an absolute rock star, like he is just just yeah,
- 7:51Speaker 2: his name's Keegan, and he is just just the best
- 7:54Speaker 2: he has been. When we first got here, he was
- 7:57Speaker 2: staying with friends sometimes people that were old friend of
- 8:00Speaker 2: Matts that he didn't even know, didn't matter, part of
- 8:04Speaker 2: our family.
- 8:04Speaker 5: They just would take.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Him and so trying to get him in school and
- 8:08Speaker 2: all of that would just be it was a lot.
- 8:12Speaker 2: But he was such a trooper the entire time.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Wow, how old was Keegan during all of well, well
- 8:21Speaker 1: this was all unfolding.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Yeah, twelve, he was twelve.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Yeah, so Keegan, Yeah, he turned twelve that summer.
- 8:27Speaker 4: Yeah, so he turned twelve that summer, going into sixth grade.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Seventh grade, Yeah, seventh grade. And then Peyton was a
- 8:35Speaker 4: rising junior at am Montpellier High School, and so Keegan
- 8:39Speaker 4: was going to the middle school.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Okay, wow, already I'm just like, I'm trying to wrap
- 8:49Speaker 1: my head around this and process this as if, as
- 8:54Speaker 1: if any of this wouldn't be as difficult as it is.
- 9:00Speaker 1: The fact that you guys were in Europe and in
- 9:04Speaker 1: the Air Force and having to uproot and and run
- 9:10Speaker 1: back and and deal with this is it.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Was a lot.
- 9:14Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Yeah, we were on a plane I think probably within
- 9:17Speaker 3: two days.
- 9:18Speaker 4: Right.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Yeah, we didn't know at the time.
- 9:21Speaker 4: We didn't know at the time that the Peyton's cancer
- 9:24Speaker 4: and metastasized, and you know, we just didn't we didn't
- 9:27Speaker 4: have an understanding of kind of what we were dealing with.
- 9:30Speaker 4: So we knew time was out of the essence. And unfortunately,
- 9:34Speaker 4: the support that I had just from an Air Force
- 9:36Speaker 4: perspective and then from a Norwich University of perspective. I
- 9:39Speaker 4: mean that at the time President Schnyder, you know, Rich
- 9:43Speaker 4: Snyder was the president at Norwich. He supported us on
- 9:46Speaker 4: equivocally just as a family, even though I didn't necessarily
- 9:49Speaker 4: I worked for them as a university. But he wasn't
- 9:51Speaker 4: necessarily my supervisor. I was still active to the Air
- 9:54Speaker 4: Force and uh, and so I think probably the most
- 9:58Speaker 4: challenging aspect of all of this was literally trying to
- 10:01Speaker 4: find a place to live, knowing that we were going
- 10:03Speaker 4: to end up in central Vermont, you know, where was
- 10:05Speaker 4: that going to be? And then kind of the relationship
- 10:08Speaker 4: that we were going to have with the hospitals in Boston,
- 10:10Speaker 4: and then the relationship potentially that we're going to have
- 10:12Speaker 4: with UVM because UVM has you know, elite resources in
- 10:16Speaker 4: Burlington as well, just from a pediacor cancer perspective, And
- 10:20Speaker 4: it was ultimately determined that you know, going back and
- 10:23Speaker 4: forth for frontline care to Boston was at that time
- 10:28Speaker 4: the best course of action, you know, for.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Us, and you also got some help from the Jimmy Fund.
- 10:36Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:37Speaker 2: So after Peyton did, he was considered cancer free for
- 10:43Speaker 2: about three months before he relapsed. They're not one hundred
- 10:47Speaker 2: percent sure if it was an actual relapse or if
- 10:50Speaker 2: it just the initial treatment knocked it down so far
- 10:53Speaker 2: that it wasn't it wasn't completely detectable. And so when
- 10:57Speaker 2: he relapsed we went back to mass Gen. They said, yes,
- 11:01Speaker 2: the cancer is back and we aren't able to treat it.
- 11:06Speaker 2: There's no uh, there's no actual treatment for you in sarcoma.
- 11:10Speaker 2: After the initial treatment is complete. It all becomes at
- 11:13Speaker 2: that point studies and trying different things and seeing what
- 11:17Speaker 2: might what might take. Clinical trials, Yeah, lots of clinical
- 11:21Speaker 2: trials and things like that. There's no whereas like for
- 11:24Speaker 2: the initial treatment, it's a very set regimen like a
- 11:27Speaker 2: lot of cancers, but for relapse there's nothing.
- 11:30Speaker 4: So at that point, you know, mass Gen has a
- 11:33Speaker 4: you know, obviously unique local relationship with Dana Fiber and
- 11:36Speaker 4: the Jimmy Fun and they said, you know, there's a
- 11:38Speaker 4: there's a doctor who's one of the leading uh pediatric
- 11:42Speaker 4: oncologists and researchers in the country. We're going to pair
- 11:46Speaker 4: you up with them and make sure that to see
- 11:49Speaker 4: if there's some opportunities for Peyton to be on trials.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Uh.
- 11:53Speaker 3: And so that's you know, whe at that.
- 11:54Speaker 4: Point we established that relationship with you know, with them
- 11:58Speaker 4: and UH and so you know, we did all you know,
- 12:00Speaker 4: the battery of tests and so on and so forth
- 12:03Speaker 4: and kind of that, which kind of brings us full
- 12:05Speaker 4: circle to why we do what we do today. The
- 12:08Speaker 4: doctor that we worked with, you know, gets his funding
- 12:14Speaker 4: from Alex's Lemonade stand Foundation, so they do the research
- 12:19Speaker 4: grants to not just the Jimmy Fun hospitals throughout the
- 12:22Speaker 4: entire country. And so that's when, you know, that's when
- 12:26Speaker 4: we realized, you know, obviously through the professionalism and the
- 12:29Speaker 4: care that the Jimmy Fun provides, but also just through
- 12:32Speaker 4: the fact that knowing that if that research money was
- 12:35Speaker 4: not provided to hospitals like Dana Farber, like the Jimmy
- 12:39Speaker 4: Fund and other places, you know, children would literally not
- 12:42Speaker 4: have a second chance at life. And that's really what
- 12:44Speaker 4: you're giving them is you're doing tests to determine what
- 12:47Speaker 4: what what you know, how can we whether it's immunotherapy,
- 12:52Speaker 4: whether it's you know, DNA sequencing, you know, And I'm
- 12:55Speaker 4: probably getting all this wrong, but the bottom line is
- 12:58Speaker 4: we felt like that relationship was unique enough and it
- 13:00Speaker 4: was meaningful enough that if we were going to do
- 13:02Speaker 4: anything in the future as an established you know, in
- 13:05Speaker 4: this case, Air Peyton you know Incorporated, which is you know,
- 13:09Speaker 4: are soon to be nonprofit that we're that we're establishing
- 13:14Speaker 4: that we're we're going to raise money to do that,
- 13:16Speaker 4: and so up you know, up in for the last
- 13:19Speaker 4: five years we worked with Alex or at least four
- 13:21Speaker 4: years we worked with Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation to make
- 13:24Speaker 4: sure that all of our proceeds, one hundred percent go
- 13:27Speaker 4: there so that kids like Peyton can get an opportunity
- 13:31Speaker 4: to do a trial where they are not necessarily I
- 13:33Speaker 4: Dana Farber, but wherever they may be, Philadelphia, Chicago, New York,
- 13:37Speaker 4: you know, you know, Saint Jude. It doesn't necessarily matter
- 13:40Speaker 4: where that for us, where that money goes to. What
- 13:43Speaker 4: matters is that the children have an opportunity to do
- 13:46Speaker 4: that because in some cases that the trials work, Like
- 13:50Speaker 4: you know, you know, when we had when Dan and
- 13:53Speaker 4: I spoke with Liz Scott of Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation,
- 13:56Speaker 4: she's the co founder of that. Had her daughter Alex
- 13:59Speaker 4: been a lot today, she would have had an opportunity
- 14:03Speaker 4: to go on a trial that potentially would have cured
- 14:07Speaker 4: the type of cancer that Alex had. And so that's
- 14:10Speaker 4: just that's inspirational for us, and it's inspirational I think,
- 14:14Speaker 4: and it just gives parents hope. And like that's our
- 14:17Speaker 4: theme for this year for twenty twenty five is keeping
- 14:19Speaker 4: hope alive. So that's again why kind of why we
- 14:23Speaker 4: do what we do, and we think it's it matters
- 14:24Speaker 4: and it's meaningful and and arguably it's it just keeps
- 14:29Speaker 4: us going.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Alex was a little girl, yep, little girl who was
- 14:35Speaker 1: diagnosed with cancer at age two. I think you were
- 14:37Speaker 1: telling me right, and started a Lemonade Stand. Yeah, for herself.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Yeah, she wanted to, she wanted to do something, and
- 14:48Speaker 2: so she told her mom, you know, why isn't there money?
- 14:51Speaker 2: Because on average, a lot of a lot of cancer
- 14:54Speaker 2: studies for more adult cancers, for cancers in general, come
- 14:57Speaker 2: from the NIH, the National Institute of Health. Only four
- 15:00Speaker 2: percent of their funding goes to all pediatric cancers and
- 15:05Speaker 2: so and a lot of that goes to the more
- 15:08Speaker 2: common of the pediatric cancers, like leukemia, that type of thing,
- 15:12Speaker 2: and so there just isn't funding. And even as a
- 15:15Speaker 2: little girl, she understood that that that was unacceptable to her,
- 15:19Speaker 2: and so she asked if she could do a lemonade
- 15:21Speaker 2: stand and then told kids in her class, and it
- 15:24Speaker 2: just grew and grew and grew from there. And and
- 15:27Speaker 2: so that's that's kind of their mantra is that, you know,
- 15:31Speaker 2: one person doesn't have to do everything, but if somebody,
- 15:34Speaker 2: if everybody does a little bit, then it just grows
- 15:37Speaker 2: and grows and grows.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Power and numbers.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, yep.
- 15:41Speaker 1: So let's just mention numbers here. Just Alex's lemonade stand.
- 15:48Speaker 1: What do you know, I mean that that first lemonade stand,
- 15:52Speaker 1: what did that pull in? Yeah?
- 15:53Speaker 2: So Alex's initial goal was a million dollars, and so
- 15:57Speaker 2: before she passed, they were able to raise million dollars
- 16:00Speaker 2: through local lemonade stands, her lemonade stand and then her
- 16:05Speaker 2: friends and the community, and it just grew and grew
- 16:07Speaker 2: from there. And so I think.
- 16:09Speaker 5: That was two years. It took her two years to.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Do that, two years to raise the million dollars, the
- 16:15Speaker 2: initial million dollars, which is still amazing for a lemonade stand.
- 16:19Speaker 3: But for a little girl too, Yes.
- 16:21Speaker 2: I know who was sick at the time and going
- 16:24Speaker 2: through treatment and you know, didn't didn't feel well most
- 16:27Speaker 2: of the time, and so I can't I can't imagine
- 16:31Speaker 2: the fortitude that she had to make that happen. So,
- 16:35Speaker 2: but I don't remember how much have they raised now
- 16:37Speaker 2: over the last twenty five.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Years, Yeah, the last twenty five years.
- 16:39Speaker 4: The twenty five year aniversary happened, I think over the summer,
- 16:43Speaker 4: but I think they're close to four hundred and fifty million.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Dollars raised. So which is you.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Know, which is so? Which did?
- 16:51Speaker 3: Which is? Which is incredible? And it's and it's so needed.
- 16:54Speaker 1: So and in the Northwestern Mutual and high end dare.
- 16:59Speaker 4: Yeah, Northwestern Mutual, uh, Northwestern Mutual. In fact, uh, September
- 17:05Speaker 4: is Pediatric Cancer Awareness month, and so Jad, we appreciate
- 17:07Speaker 4: you having us on during this month. I mean, we
- 17:10Speaker 4: appreciate you having us on anyways, but just pediatric cancer
- 17:13Speaker 4: should have more than just one month. But the fact
- 17:15Speaker 4: that this September I think is special. And and if
- 17:18Speaker 4: you go to you know, Northwestern Mutual there they dedicate
- 17:21Speaker 4: an entire page to their relationship with Alex's Laminade Sand Foundation,
- 17:25Speaker 4: and uh, it's you know it, it's heartwarming. It's heart
- 17:30Speaker 4: warming to see just an entire company like that. Yeah,
- 17:33Speaker 4: just give give, you know, give time, give energy, give
- 17:35Speaker 4: a voice, uh to to pediatric cancer and uh in
- 17:40Speaker 4: pediatric cancer research because uh, again it's needed and they
- 17:45Speaker 4: do it, and they do it in such a meaningful
- 17:47Speaker 4: way you know as well that anyone can contribute. Again
- 17:51Speaker 4: what just like Alex's Laminade Sand Foundation says, they say
- 17:54Speaker 4: literally one cup at a time. And to me, that
- 17:56Speaker 4: translates to, you know, either bringing awareness to if you
- 18:00Speaker 4: can give, if you can give a dollar, give a dollar,
- 18:02Speaker 4: you can give more. That's great because again I think
- 18:06Speaker 4: that Alex's makes it. They make sure that that money
- 18:11Speaker 4: donated matters, that it doesn't. It's not spent frivolously. It's
- 18:15Speaker 4: spent in the meaningful capacity. And we've seen it firsthand.
- 18:19Speaker 4: We've we've been beneficiaries of that research money and grant
- 18:23Speaker 4: and we are so grateful.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Wow. Yeah, how you know, I obviously I want to
- 18:30Speaker 1: ask you about the word air and get into that pussure.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Did Peyton graduate from Montpilier High School? He did.
- 18:38Speaker 2: He graduated in twenty twenty, which was a crazy, crazy
- 18:42Speaker 2: time to be to try and be trying to finish
- 18:45Speaker 2: up high school and graduate. The Mont player High School
- 18:49Speaker 2: did an amazing job. They they actually had each of
- 18:52Speaker 2: the kids come up individually outside to the high school
- 18:57Speaker 2: and they got to put on their cap and gown
- 18:59Speaker 2: and walk across the state and then they spliced it
- 19:01Speaker 2: all together so that the families could zoom it out
- 19:04Speaker 2: and we could all watch it. And so yeah, he
- 19:07Speaker 2: was he was beyond excited that he was able to
- 19:11Speaker 2: go out and uh and do that and and put
- 19:14Speaker 2: on his you know, his cap and gown. So and
- 19:18Speaker 2: it was really it was really tough in a lot
- 19:22Speaker 2: of ways because there was a lot of things that
- 19:24Speaker 2: you know, he missed out on his senior prom because
- 19:26Speaker 2: all of everything was canceled because of COVID. He missed
- 19:29Speaker 2: out on they every year, the Jimmy Fun does a
- 19:33Speaker 2: trip to Florida for spring training, and he was scheduled
- 19:38Speaker 2: to go on that and that was canceled with he
- 19:41Speaker 2: was supposed to go to Red Sox spring training. His
- 19:44Speaker 2: baseball team at the high school was supposed to go
- 19:46Speaker 2: on a spring break trip to Florida for baseball to
- 19:52Speaker 2: play baseball down there with a bunch of other teams.
- 19:54Speaker 2: They weren't able to do that, so he, uh, he
- 19:58Speaker 2: missed out on quite a bit because not only because
- 20:00Speaker 2: he was so sick, but because of COVID. So we
- 20:05Speaker 2: just we made the best of it. And Mont Pilier,
- 20:07Speaker 2: you know, in true Mont Pilier High School fashion, took
- 20:10Speaker 2: great care of all the kids and made sure that
- 20:13Speaker 2: they got as much, you know, as much as they
- 20:16Speaker 2: could out of everything.
- 20:17Speaker 1: So I don't know who over at Montpilier High School,
- 20:22Speaker 1: and I'm sure there are several people that just refused
- 20:29Speaker 1: to allow this event to not happen, right, and not
- 20:36Speaker 1: only that, but also refused to not let it grow
- 20:43Speaker 1: right into into something as big as it is now.
- 20:46Speaker 1: And this is year number five this coming Sunday at
- 20:51Speaker 1: Montpilier High School. It's from eleven till two and it's
- 20:55Speaker 1: a walk and a run of five k right, right, right,
- 20:58Speaker 1: And it's done either in person there at the school,
- 21:02Speaker 1: right or virtually. Right. It's just the first year that
- 21:06Speaker 1: it's been done virtually.
- 21:07Speaker 5: No, this is the third year.
- 21:10Speaker 3: That's a yeah, it's a third or fourth year.
- 21:12Speaker 5: Yeah, third or fourth year.
- 21:14Speaker 2: And we started that because we have as a military family,
- 21:18Speaker 2: we have friends literally around the world, you know, stationed everywhere.
- 21:23Speaker 2: And we thought, well, because our younger son had done
- 21:27Speaker 2: a couple of virtual five ks during twenty twenty during
- 21:30Speaker 2: COVID when everything was shut down, just have something fun
- 21:32Speaker 2: to do. And we were like, well, these people would
- 21:36Speaker 2: like to participate and they'd like to give, and so
- 21:38Speaker 2: what if we do it?
- 21:39Speaker 5: What if we do it virtually? What if we offer
- 21:41Speaker 5: a virtual option?
- 21:42Speaker 2: And so we have people all around the world doing
- 21:44Speaker 2: all right, let's.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Let's name names and name countries. Sure go.
- 21:49Speaker 4: So so this year there's participants just across the just
- 21:54Speaker 4: across the US, I mean everywhere from Alaska.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Tim in Alaska, what a friend Tim in Alaska?
- 22:01Speaker 3: Yes, Actually, there's no Tim.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Michelle there's multiple people in Alaska, Uh, this, California, Uh,
- 22:09Speaker 4: the Nevada, Texas, Florida, Virginia, Michigan.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Uh.
- 22:15Speaker 4: You know j D I, I we'd be remiss if
- 22:17Speaker 4: I didn't give a shout out to you know, we work.
- 22:20Speaker 4: I work with some teams in n C double A
- 22:22Speaker 4: Hockey Lake Superior State University and Sue Saint Marie, Michigan.
- 22:27Speaker 4: Their entire team is coming together wearing air paytent colors.
- 22:33Speaker 4: They're going across the border to Sue Saint Marie, Canada,
- 22:36Speaker 4: participating in the Terry Fox Run in honor of Peyton
- 22:41Speaker 4: and so they're they're doing that there, which of course,
- 22:44Speaker 4: the Terry Fox Run specifically raises money for pediatric cancer
- 22:48Speaker 4: because Terry Fox himself had OSTEO sarcoma and did the.
- 22:51Speaker 3: Marathon of Hope. Uh.
- 22:54Speaker 4: And them Union College in New York is also participating.
- 23:00Speaker 4: And then you know there's we have our.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Younger son goes to Salve Regina University down in Newportwood, Island,
- 23:09Speaker 2: and the entire team is doing is doing the run
- 23:13Speaker 2: together as a team.
- 23:15Speaker 5: So and we have yeah, friends.
- 23:17Speaker 1: This just turned into a Texas everywhere.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Yeah, it has.
- 23:20Speaker 4: And I think that you know, just through platforms like yours,
- 23:23Speaker 4: they get the word out there. I think initially, you
- 23:27Speaker 4: know what, what was just a humble sort of get
- 23:30Speaker 4: together in high school. I think the power of social media,
- 23:33Speaker 4: the power of just you know, voices such as yourselves,
- 23:37Speaker 4: just I think gives people like us strength to continue
- 23:41Speaker 4: because you wonder, like, are we really doing something with this?
- 23:44Speaker 3: Is this really? Is this really meaningful? You know, because
- 23:46Speaker 3: there's a lot.
- 23:47Speaker 4: Of work because into it, you know, there's a ton
- 23:50Speaker 4: of work, and we wouldn't be able to do it
- 23:51Speaker 4: with I mean, our friends that help out are amazing.
- 23:54Speaker 4: I mean, my you know, my sister helps out, my
- 23:56Speaker 4: brother helps out, you know, Danny's uh, you know, Danny's
- 23:59Speaker 4: friends and family help out. So I mean it is
- 24:02Speaker 4: really a team effort. And but I think that the
- 24:06Speaker 4: social media platforms itself because you can tell Peyton's story
- 24:09Speaker 4: without like, you know, without me having to always tell
- 24:14Speaker 4: the story of Danne have to tell the story or
- 24:15Speaker 4: a Kegan, you know, whether it's through the website, whether
- 24:18Speaker 4: it's through you know, a podcast or or or something
- 24:21Speaker 4: like that, you have an opportunity to kind of just
- 24:24Speaker 4: say the goodness about Peyton, uh and and what he
- 24:27Speaker 4: meant and how hard he fought. You know, I mean
- 24:29Speaker 4: childhood cancer kids, whether they passed or whe they're still alive,
- 24:34Speaker 4: I mean warriors. I mean, they really are across the board.
- 24:38Speaker 4: Peyton never complained, He never complained once, and he just
- 24:41Speaker 4: went and did what needed to be done. And I
- 24:44Speaker 4: think that that level of resiliency and how he mamed
- 24:48Speaker 4: his positive maintained positivity throughout all of it regardless. I
- 24:52Speaker 4: think that's something that should be celebrated, not just in
- 24:55Speaker 4: the month of September, but it's celebrated throughout. And if
- 24:57Speaker 4: this is if this can be our little way of
- 24:59Speaker 4: giving back and raising money and bringing awareness, then these
- 25:03Speaker 4: kids deserve it. They didn't ask to get cancer. They
- 25:07Speaker 4: didn't ask to get cancer at all. And in a
- 25:09Speaker 4: lot of cases, I mean all of them were living
- 25:11Speaker 4: healthy lives up until the point where they no longer
- 25:14Speaker 4: are healthy because they were stricting with cancer. So if
- 25:16Speaker 4: we can do our part right, and again, that could
- 25:19Speaker 4: be just wearing a bracelet, it could be wearing a
- 25:20Speaker 4: T shirt, it could be wearing gold. It could be
- 25:23Speaker 4: you know, maybe donating money or time or effort or
- 25:26Speaker 4: volunteerism and stuff like that. So that's why we do
- 25:29Speaker 4: what we do, and it motivates us. And again, I'd
- 25:32Speaker 4: be remiss if I didn't say thank you for having
- 25:34Speaker 4: us on and being able to say those words.
- 25:36Speaker 3: So appreciate it.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Jad. This is I am. I'm sitting here, I'm listening
- 25:42Speaker 1: to you, and I'm saying to myself, this is such
- 25:47Speaker 1: a blessing for me that I've met you guys, and
- 25:51Speaker 1: that we're having this experience this morning here in the air,
- 25:54Speaker 1: because I feel like I've made two more friends, and
- 25:59Speaker 1: I would love to have you on obviously every year.
- 26:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I would love that.
- 26:06Speaker 1: And shame on me for for not having you on
- 26:11Speaker 1: year one, two, three, and four. I've got to do
- 26:16Speaker 1: some making up for that.
- 26:18Speaker 5: Well, we appreciate it.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Thank you, and I intend to uh and at the
- 26:23Speaker 1: absolute least just promote this is as much as possible.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Thank you. This is a really this is a fun event.
- 26:33Speaker 1: I mean the pictures that I've seen just on your
- 26:38Speaker 1: your social media Air Payton twenty five right, Ye, Yes,
- 26:43Speaker 1: everybody's happy. Yeah, everybody's having amazing.
- 26:47Speaker 2: It's so much fun and it's so it's so heartwarming
- 26:51Speaker 2: to see one of the things that as as a
- 26:55Speaker 2: mom who's lost a kiddo is you're just so afraid
- 26:58Speaker 2: that people will forget him.
- 27:00Speaker 5: And every year.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Seeing seeing the air Paytent t shirts around town or
- 27:05Speaker 2: going out and if I say air Paytent, people know
- 27:09Speaker 2: what that is and they remember him. And that to
- 27:11Speaker 2: me is like if if there's no other reason to
- 27:14Speaker 2: do it than that, just that that people still celebrate
- 27:17Speaker 2: him every year.
- 27:18Speaker 1: So he's what's the deal now? He aspired to create
- 27:24Speaker 1: an athletic sneaker.
- 27:26Speaker 5: He did.
- 27:27Speaker 2: He was absolutely enamored and in love with sneakers and
- 27:32Speaker 2: the sneaker culture and from the time he was probably
- 27:35Speaker 2: in early middle.
- 27:37Speaker 5: School, loved it.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Would would look for sneaker drops to see when the
- 27:41Speaker 2: next and the latest, greatest thing was coming out.
- 27:43Speaker 5: And his goal.
- 27:45Speaker 2: One of the one of the things that really meant
- 27:48Speaker 2: a lot to him, was to be a sneaker designer someday.
- 27:51Speaker 2: And so when we started, like when he went through
- 27:54Speaker 2: the whole college application process, that's what we were looking
- 27:57Speaker 2: for is programs that have in austrial design or sneaker design.
- 28:02Speaker 2: He actually did a summer course down at Risdy in
- 28:04Speaker 2: Rhode Island while while he was in between treatment too.
- 28:11Speaker 2: It was like a week long program to do sneaker design,
- 28:14Speaker 2: and so that was his make a wish was to
- 28:16Speaker 2: go to the Nike headquarters and design his own sneaker.
- 28:20Speaker 2: And so we were able to go and do that.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Make a wish, made that happen, and so he designed
- 28:27Speaker 2: a Jordan for he got to sit down with the
- 28:30Speaker 2: actual Air Jordan team at the Nike headquarters and design
- 28:34Speaker 2: his own sneaker, and so they put on it Air
- 28:37Speaker 2: Peyton and so that's where we came up with the
- 28:40Speaker 2: name Air Peyton.
- 28:42Speaker 6: So, yeah, how come you didn't bring with I know, yeah,
- 28:47Speaker 6: so we totally we didn't think this through j but
- 28:51Speaker 6: but yeah, but a very quick search, a very quick search.
- 28:55Speaker 4: Of Air Peyton and and Air Jordan four will reveal
- 28:59Speaker 4: multiple articles by uh, you know, by sneaker magazines, sneaker
- 29:06Speaker 4: designers and Instagram posts and Facebook posts and all that
- 29:10Speaker 4: sort of stuff. So so yeah, so the real so
- 29:15Speaker 4: the backstory on the Air Jordan four. airG Jordan four
- 29:17Speaker 4: is obviously their signature shoe when it comes to you know,
- 29:20Speaker 4: whether it's artists or athletes and all that sort of stuff,
- 29:23Speaker 4: when when they're kind of creating their signature shoes. So
- 29:25Speaker 4: Peyton knew that he wanted to create that. And so
- 29:27Speaker 4: if you look at the colors on there, JD there,
- 29:30Speaker 4: it's air Force blue.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Right.
- 29:31Speaker 4: He was an air Force kid and and so he
- 29:34Speaker 4: spent really in one way, shape, one way or another,
- 29:36Speaker 4: eighteen years in the US Air Force as a dependent
- 29:40Speaker 4: and so he was traveled literally all over the world,
- 29:42Speaker 4: born in Oklahoma, went to school everywhere, and so the
- 29:45Speaker 4: Air Force culture was very important to him. So that's
- 29:47Speaker 4: why that blue was that blue. So that is that
- 29:50Speaker 4: is the air Force blue. And then the yellow that's
- 29:52Speaker 4: the pediactor cancer yellow. So and then is that it
- 29:56Speaker 4: right there on your Yeah, those are them going to
- 29:59Speaker 4: bring them over see yeah, so those.
- 30:01Speaker 3: Are them and so.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Really yeah, so there's four pair in.
- 30:05Speaker 3: The So there's four pair in the world.
- 30:07Speaker 4: Uh So mine's still fresh minor unworn, and Danny's are
- 30:12Speaker 4: still unwarned.
- 30:12Speaker 3: Keegan has worn his, and Peyton of course wore his.
- 30:15Speaker 4: And that's him with all four pair right there in
- 30:19Speaker 4: his in his bedroom. And so the you know again
- 30:23Speaker 4: the backstory, you know, in fall of twenty nineteen, through
- 30:27Speaker 4: make through Make a Wish Vermont and in collaboration with
- 30:30Speaker 4: Make a Wish Oregon, he went out to Nike headquarters,
- 30:32Speaker 4: sat down, just like Danny said, sat down with the
- 30:35Speaker 4: Jordan Division and created those shoes.
- 30:37Speaker 3: So we sat with people, Yeah, crazy amazing.
- 30:40Speaker 2: People that actually sat down with Michael Jordan and make shoes. Yeah,
- 30:44Speaker 2: which it's just yeah, we were so blown.
- 30:47Speaker 4: Away, blown away, so selecting whether it's the colorway, whether
- 30:50Speaker 4: it's the cloth or the leather, you know, and all
- 30:54Speaker 4: that sort of stuff. And so there's unique things throughout
- 30:56Speaker 4: that sneaker, you know, all the places that Peyton lived
- 30:59Speaker 4: or lasering graved along the base of the shoe. The
- 31:02Speaker 4: bottom of the shoe is pediacric cancer yellow uh in it.
- 31:05Speaker 4: So and then just something that's super unique jd On
- 31:08Speaker 4: on the right side is if you notice that logo,
- 31:11Speaker 4: it's not just a cancer logo, but the white is
- 31:14Speaker 4: the Nike you it's yeah, Peyton, Yeah, that was Peyton's idea.
- 31:22Speaker 3: So he came up with that.
- 31:22Speaker 1: So it's a it's gonna I could have something like
- 31:24Speaker 1: that so obvious right in front of my face.
- 31:27Speaker 2: I know I would have never he was so so creative, right.
- 31:31Speaker 4: Right, So it's so subtle but yet so uh just
- 31:34Speaker 4: so poignant. And so that and and Nike has been
- 31:38Speaker 4: amazing to work with and just you know, just essentially
- 31:43Speaker 4: uh you know, as far as allowing that to be
- 31:47Speaker 4: on the sneaker and allowing to be part of the
- 31:49Speaker 4: Air Peytent history. And so that's why, that's why the
- 31:52Speaker 4: event itself is called Air Peyton.
- 31:53Speaker 1: And so can we get more than four? Me though?
- 31:56Speaker 3: I know, right, you're one of a million, that's yeah.
- 31:59Speaker 4: So there's been a lot of folks and there's been
- 32:02Speaker 4: you know, it's no surprise, there's been a lot of
- 32:04Speaker 4: people that have offered an unbelievab amount of money for
- 32:07Speaker 4: those shoes. And yes, yeah, well they're at our house,
- 32:14Speaker 4: locked up in a vault.
- 32:15Speaker 3: No, I'm just kidding.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Uh no, we so we have a gym downstairs. So
- 32:19Speaker 4: peyton shoes are in the gym which is called it's
- 32:21Speaker 4: the Air Payton Memorial Gym, which our friends built for
- 32:24Speaker 4: Keegan in honor of his brother who passed.
- 32:27Speaker 3: Wow, and so but all but Peyton.
- 32:30Speaker 4: That's where Peyton's sneaker collaboration is in a very it's
- 32:33Speaker 4: in a temperature controlled environment.
- 32:35Speaker 1: I know. No, yeah, that's not that's not but.
- 32:40Speaker 4: You got to make sure you take care of him,
- 32:42Speaker 4: and uh and and whatnot. And so Peyton was very
- 32:46Speaker 4: particular about how he cared for his shoes, how he
- 32:49Speaker 4: cared for his clothing and all that sort of stuff.
- 32:51Speaker 4: And so you know, when he was designing it, he
- 32:53Speaker 4: had an idea. And what's pretty cool, JD is on
- 32:55Speaker 4: the tongue or not the tongue, but the in sool
- 32:59Speaker 4: is nozar art from nose art from World War two aircraft,
- 33:04Speaker 4: so like you know, the the shark's teeth if you will,
- 33:07Speaker 4: So if you go back to like a P forty
- 33:09Speaker 4: Warhawk or P fifty one, he took the nose art
- 33:12Speaker 4: off of that and that is the insol to the
- 33:15Speaker 4: shoe as well.
- 33:15Speaker 3: So crazy, yeah, it is crazy.
- 33:18Speaker 5: Yeah, he's very creative.
- 33:19Speaker 1: Guys. This is this is really quite a story here.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Look at this. I'm going to be sharing this up
- 33:30Speaker 1: to I'm going to get all of this.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:33Speaker 4: There they are, Yeah, there they are right there. And
- 33:36Speaker 4: so if you look at the bottom right hand part
- 33:38Speaker 4: of that shoe, I don't know if you can see that. Yeah,
- 33:40Speaker 4: so like the left side, the furthest of the left
- 33:42Speaker 4: says Oklahoma City and then all the places that he's
- 33:46Speaker 4: that he's that he's lived with the last one being.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Vermont, Pennsylvania, Italy Germany.
- 33:55Speaker 3: Right, yep. And then there's the tongue.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Yep, absolutely incredible. There it is.
- 34:07Speaker 3: There we go, yeah, there we go, there we go.
- 34:12Speaker 4: And then then of course the Nike the you know
- 34:15Speaker 4: you're the yellow inside the yeah, right in there, and
- 34:25Speaker 4: then yellow on the bottom and then blew as well.
- 34:27Speaker 3: That was his idea.
- 34:31Speaker 4: And then there's that's the insult that I'm talking about.
- 34:33Speaker 4: So if you turn them on their side, if you
- 34:35Speaker 4: remember back in the day, you know, it was just
- 34:37Speaker 4: important for the crews to personalize their aircraft, and so
- 34:41Speaker 4: Peyton thought, you know, it's important that I'm personalizing my shoe,
- 34:45Speaker 4: and I want to personalize my shoe akin to what
- 34:49Speaker 4: you know, are you know US Army Air Force, you know,
- 34:55Speaker 4: air Corps aviators at at the time. So it was
- 34:58Speaker 4: important to him that to have military Air force representation.
- 35:01Speaker 4: So again this is this is all him. I have
- 35:05Speaker 4: zero design ability in my body. And yes, so yeah,
- 35:12Speaker 4: what a story. Yeah it's great.
- 35:15Speaker 5: He's pretty amazing.
- 35:17Speaker 1: I'm so blown away. I didn't I didn't know this.
- 35:20Speaker 1: I mean I do now. Yeah. I think a good
- 35:22Speaker 1: number of people who weren't aware of this are now.
- 35:25Speaker 1: I mean, this is incredible.
- 35:27Speaker 4: Yeah, and yeah, and so just a quick shout out
- 35:33Speaker 4: to you know, Peyton got accepted to a lot of
- 35:36Speaker 4: schools across the country. I mean, University of Oregon. He
- 35:39Speaker 4: applied to Universe of Oregon just because the the unique
- 35:42Speaker 4: ties between University of Oregon and obviously Nike with Phil
- 35:45Speaker 4: Knight and all that sort of stuff, and you got
- 35:49Speaker 4: a step in the bailor the University of Texas.
- 35:52Speaker 3: That's where Danny.
- 35:52Speaker 4: Went wentworth in Studo Technology in Boston, because again he
- 35:57Speaker 4: wanted to be an industrial designer, if you will. However,
- 36:01Speaker 4: what we ended up doing was just going to Saint Mike's.
- 36:03Speaker 4: You know, He's like, well, I just I want to
- 36:05Speaker 4: try to experience college. And so Peyton applied to Saint Mike's,
- 36:11Speaker 4: got into Saint Mike's and we moved him in and
- 36:14Speaker 4: all that sort of stuff, and you know, that was
- 36:16Speaker 4: to be the start of his kind of collegiate you know,
- 36:19Speaker 4: sort of experience with the hopes of at least something
- 36:22Speaker 4: possibly some trial working out and whatnot. But you know,
- 36:28Speaker 4: and that was the fall of twenty twenty. And bottom line,
- 36:32Speaker 4: Saint Mike's was incredible and supported him and supported us throughout.
- 36:38Speaker 3: And whatnot.
- 36:39Speaker 4: And I say that just because of the fact that
- 36:41Speaker 4: you know, that was that was important to him, was
- 36:44Speaker 4: to try to experience college, try to experience some semblance
- 36:48Speaker 4: of what it meant to be a normal eighteen year
- 36:50Speaker 4: old kid.
- 36:51Speaker 2: So that was kind of one of our themes kind
- 36:54Speaker 2: of throughout his treatment is to give him as much
- 36:59Speaker 2: normal as we could. You know, he got his driver's license,
- 37:04Speaker 2: he did driver z he he tried to go to
- 37:07Speaker 2: school as much as he possibly could. And they were
- 37:12Speaker 2: his treatment team at mass Gen, his treatment team at
- 37:14Speaker 2: Dana Farber, the high school. You know, everyone worked so
- 37:18Speaker 2: hard to give him as much normal and everyday life
- 37:24Speaker 2: that he could have the normal teenager things and girlfriends
- 37:28Speaker 2: and friends and being a part of the sports teams,
- 37:30Speaker 2: and the high school was Monpular High School was amazing.
- 37:35Speaker 2: From the moment he showed up, they were just like,
- 37:38Speaker 2: whatever we need to do to make sure that he
- 37:42Speaker 2: is here as much as he can be, that we
- 37:44Speaker 2: make accommodations when he can't, and we just go from there,
- 37:49Speaker 2: and that was really important to him. We would when
- 37:52Speaker 2: he was going through radiation, we would be in Boston
- 37:56Speaker 2: for the radiation treatment for pro They only have proton
- 37:59Speaker 2: radiation treatment in certain locations, and there's only a couple
- 38:03Speaker 2: on the East Coast, and one is in Boston at
- 38:06Speaker 2: mass Gen and you have to it's Monday through Friday
- 38:09Speaker 2: treatment every day, and so we had to stay down there.
- 38:13Speaker 2: And so Peyton and I basically moved down to Boston
- 38:17Speaker 2: and he would do a treatment Friday morning, we would
- 38:19Speaker 2: get in the car, drive back up to Vermont and
- 38:22Speaker 2: he would go to his last two classes just so
- 38:25Speaker 2: that he could go.
- 38:25Speaker 5: To school just a little bit, because.
- 38:27Speaker 2: It's a six week program and he was going to
- 38:29Speaker 2: miss six weeks at school and he just didn't didn't
- 38:32Speaker 2: want to do that, So so we made accommodations and
- 38:37Speaker 2: made it happen. And to be as sick as he
- 38:40Speaker 2: was and to just be like whatever, I'm going to
- 38:43Speaker 2: still get up and I'm going to go to school,
- 38:44Speaker 2: and that was so important to him.
- 38:47Speaker 5: It's just it's amazing the things that he was able to.
- 38:50Speaker 2: Accomplish in tough absolutely he gets from mom.
- 38:57Speaker 1: Wow, that didn't spread my mom, Sir. Both of you
- 39:02Speaker 1: are remarkably strong individuals and fantastic parents. This this event
- 39:13Speaker 1: on Sunday brings together not just Montpelier and students from
- 39:19Speaker 1: Montpelier no High School, but Norwich University and several other
- 39:24Speaker 1: schools too.
- 39:25Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 39:26Speaker 4: Yeah, so you thirty two has been in this from
- 39:28Speaker 4: Jump Street as well. We also have support, uh, you
- 39:33Speaker 4: know from you know, there's been there's been Berry residents
- 39:38Speaker 4: you know, and and folks from all of central Vermont
- 39:42Speaker 4: that have been a part of this, you know, from
- 39:43Speaker 4: from day one. And the support that we receive from
- 39:46Speaker 4: businesses and Montpelier, the support that we receive from businesses
- 39:49Speaker 4: you know here and Barry has been has been amazing.
- 39:55Speaker 1: I know that you guys don't have papers in your
- 39:58Speaker 1: hands right with a cheat sheet right with the list
- 40:03Speaker 1: of all of the businesses and individuals that have made
- 40:07Speaker 1: this such as success. But you got some pretty big sponsors.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Yeah, we do. We've been very everyone has been amazingly generous.
- 40:16Speaker 2: And I'm always amazed each year when we reach out
- 40:20Speaker 2: and say, hey, we're you know, this is this is
- 40:22Speaker 2: the next year, next year, that they're just like absolutely
- 40:25Speaker 2: what can we do to help? From you know, people
- 40:28Speaker 2: in the local community to just a huge variety of
- 40:33Speaker 2: sponsors and our friends that own businesses kind of around
- 40:36Speaker 2: the country sponsor as well, and they're just everyone is
- 40:40Speaker 2: just amazing. It's amazing to see the people that come
- 40:43Speaker 2: out and give and we have everything from you know,
- 40:46Speaker 2: small donations. If that's what the business can provide, then
- 40:50Speaker 2: that's awesome. We do a huge raffle at the event
- 40:54Speaker 2: every year.
- 40:55Speaker 5: That's usually a huge, huge hit.
- 40:57Speaker 2: So we do everything from We've had Norwich key from
- 41:00Speaker 2: the hockey team, you signed.
- 41:02Speaker 5: Jerseys VM VM here.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Yeah. This year they've donated not only a a fight
- 41:10Speaker 2: cancer jersey from the team, but they've also donated hockey
- 41:14Speaker 2: tickets and basketball tickets.
- 41:17Speaker 5: We've had we I mean all kinds of stuff.
- 41:20Speaker 1: You guys are blowing my mind right now.
- 41:22Speaker 5: So it's amazing.
- 41:23Speaker 2: This year we are actually, in addition to our normal raffle,
- 41:26Speaker 2: we're having flowers by Danielle donated a e bike, so
- 41:31Speaker 2: we have an amazing I wish it were mine e bike.
- 41:35Speaker 5: It's it's awesome.
- 41:36Speaker 2: Yeah, so we're raffling that off as well to raise
- 41:39Speaker 2: more money.
- 41:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean Telbert's Maple Syrup in Maple Syrup Farm
- 41:44Speaker 4: in Cabot, I mean.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Big Fox and Skinner has been, they've been, They've they've
- 41:52Speaker 2: sponsored every year.
- 41:53Speaker 1: Yeah, not surprised.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that Heidi graph over there and her partner
- 41:59Speaker 2: there amazing.
- 42:01Speaker 5: We were very lucky.
- 42:02Speaker 2: They were one of the first families that we met.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Our boys played baseball together, our younger son and their
- 42:08Speaker 2: son played baseball together, and they are lifelong friends. Whether
- 42:13Speaker 2: he he likes it or not, we're she's she's amazing
- 42:16Speaker 2: and they have been amazingly supportive like they are to
- 42:20Speaker 2: a lot of different community events.
- 42:22Speaker 5: So mmr the Trench.
- 42:24Speaker 4: Fan Yeah, mmr, the Trench family. I mean every almost
- 42:28Speaker 4: literally every single restaurant in Montpellier has done a gift
- 42:32Speaker 4: you know, done a gift card.
- 42:33Speaker 2: Everything from Buddies in the Mad Taco.
- 42:35Speaker 3: Yeah, Buddy's Mad, all of the.
- 42:42Speaker 1: We're all just talking raffle here.
- 42:44Speaker 4: Yeah, this is just Yeah, the raffle is kind of
- 42:46Speaker 4: a big deal. It's super exciting and uh, it's an
- 42:48Speaker 4: opportunity for i mean, Danny and friends and family. They
- 42:51Speaker 4: build gift they guilt build gift baskets if you will,
- 42:55Speaker 4: and then you can just get you know, you get
- 42:56Speaker 4: raffle tickets by just signing up for the event. Anyways,
- 42:58Speaker 4: you can buy additional raffle ticket in mind you we're
- 43:01Speaker 4: not charging.
- 43:01Speaker 3: Obviously thousands of dollars for affle tickets. Which kind of
- 43:04Speaker 3: makes it exciting. Uh.
- 43:05Speaker 4: And so it's just an opportunity for one, is for
- 43:09Speaker 4: the local businesses and community and and whatnot to get exposure,
- 43:12Speaker 4: right you know, because if you get a gift card,
- 43:14Speaker 4: you're gonna go there, right, I mean yeah, you know,
- 43:18Speaker 4: and again whether whatever whatever that is, and so gives
- 43:22Speaker 4: them an opportunity to maybe try something that they haven't
- 43:24Speaker 4: had an opportunity to try, you know, in the pasture
- 43:28Speaker 4: and you know, Morse Farm another one they have more
- 43:30Speaker 4: year in and year out. You know, those guys have
- 43:34Speaker 4: those guys have been have Beenary Capital, Stationary, Eric Biglestone
- 43:38Speaker 4: and team. It's been, it's been. It's been amazing. Forget
- 43:42Speaker 4: me not Flowers just across the street has been great
- 43:45Speaker 4: ye as well. So yeah, I mean it's it's been great.
- 43:49Speaker 4: And you know, in some cases it's not thousands upon
- 43:51Speaker 4: thousands of dollars of gift cards. But we don't care
- 43:54Speaker 4: like it does. It doesn't people get excited, you know.
- 43:57Speaker 2: And we have a good friend too that our younger
- 44:01Speaker 2: sons played baseball together and they he donates. He's a
- 44:05Speaker 2: bit of a sneaker head as well, just like Peyton was.
- 44:08Speaker 2: And so every year he donates. Last year, he donated
- 44:11Speaker 2: Jordan Force for the fourth annual.
- 44:14Speaker 3: Yeah, and so easy slides.
- 44:16Speaker 2: Yeah, this year it's easy slides and the phone.
- 44:18Speaker 3: Phone runners, phone runners.
- 44:20Speaker 2: Yeah, so we'll be raffling those off as well.
- 44:22Speaker 4: And that's the stage ad and the theme of just
- 44:24Speaker 4: you know, the air Payton the sneakerhead, the sneaker head
- 44:27Speaker 4: sort of theme, you know. And also I mean, what
- 44:28Speaker 4: kid doesn't want you know, yeah, yeah, you know fresh.
- 44:32Speaker 5: Hair, Yeah exactly.
- 44:35Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, So I don't know, hold you are, man,
- 44:38Speaker 1: but this kind of stuff wasn't happening when we were kids. No, no, no, no,
- 44:42Speaker 1: there there was no sneaker on the earth that was
- 44:45Speaker 1: going for two or three hundred bucks.
- 44:47Speaker 3: Yeah no, no, no, you know what I'm saying.
- 44:49Speaker 4: Yeah, no, maybe maybe like you know, yeah parent Chuck Taylor's.
- 44:55Speaker 2: Or when Peyton first got into it and he would
- 44:57Speaker 2: come home and we were like, what on earth?
- 45:01Speaker 5: Yeah, this is crazy.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:03Speaker 4: So Peyton declared himself, I think maybe when he was
- 45:06Speaker 4: twelve or thirteen, he's like yeah, he's like, I'm I'm
- 45:11Speaker 4: in you know, I'm a sneakerhead and all that sort
- 45:13Speaker 4: of stuff, like that's my hobby. Yeah, and I'm thinking
- 45:15Speaker 4: to myself, well, your hobby requires you.
- 45:17Speaker 5: To spend that amount of money.
- 45:19Speaker 3: Amount of money.
- 45:20Speaker 4: And to his credit, I mean he he would save
- 45:22Speaker 4: money and and he would save up baby, and he
- 45:27Speaker 4: would you know, work at the pool and do all
- 45:29Speaker 4: that sort of stuff just so we could save money,
- 45:31Speaker 4: so we could buy sneakers.
- 45:33Speaker 1: That was his groove.
- 45:34Speaker 5: That was groove absolutely.
- 45:35Speaker 1: Matt and Danny Smith are my guests this morning, the
- 45:38Speaker 1: parents of Peyton and this coming Sunday is the fifth
- 45:43Speaker 1: annual Air Peyton Memorial five K Walk and run for
- 45:46Speaker 1: pediatric cancer awareness Sunday from eleven to two at Montpellier
- 45:50Speaker 1: High School. Registration is going to end on September tenth,
- 45:55Speaker 1: so five pm, right.
- 45:56Speaker 2: There's a there's a couple of the preregistration will will stop,
- 46:01Speaker 2: but people can show up day of and register. The
- 46:04Speaker 2: way that we have registration set up is if you want,
- 46:08Speaker 2: if you want to register and purchase a T shirt,
- 46:11Speaker 2: it's thirty dollars, but we encourage everyone to just come
- 46:15Speaker 2: out and you it's it's by donation. If you don't
- 46:18Speaker 2: want a T shirt and you can donate a dollar,
- 46:21Speaker 2: you can donate one hundred dollars.
- 46:22Speaker 5: It doesn't matter.
- 46:23Speaker 2: We we just want to encourage everyone to come out
- 46:25Speaker 2: and participate.
- 46:27Speaker 5: So we've kind of set it.
- 46:28Speaker 2: Up that way because we want to we want to
- 46:30Speaker 2: make sure we're including everyone and giving everyone that opportunity.
- 46:33Speaker 1: It's not like you have to do the five K No.
- 46:36Speaker 3: No, not at all.
- 46:37Speaker 4: Yeah, there's I mean, there's there's food vendor coming from
- 46:39Speaker 4: Merthy's Kingdom.
- 46:42Speaker 5: Rockies New York style hot Dogs is coming.
- 46:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Uh and they're going to have and they all hot dogs.
- 46:49Speaker 3: I mean they're they're bringing their thing.
- 46:51Speaker 1: So those food trucks obviously, lemonade, absolutely, face painting, lawn games, yes,
- 46:57Speaker 1: bouncy house.
- 46:58Speaker 4: Oh yeah, we have two huge is coming for older
- 47:01Speaker 4: people like myself and.
- 47:03Speaker 3: Really yeah oh yeah.
- 47:04Speaker 1: So seriously, I'm going to chiropractor next this morning because
- 47:07Speaker 1: I threw I threw mine out, so I will be
- 47:08Speaker 1: at the bouncy house. But it's good that there's an
- 47:11Speaker 1: adult version.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Yes, there's a larger and a smaller to keep everyone safe. Wow.
- 47:15Speaker 5: Yeah, so it'll be great. We'll have a hugeage right
- 47:18Speaker 5: outside that yeah, abs exactly.
- 47:21Speaker 2: We do have a couple of massages that have been
- 47:22Speaker 2: donated for the raffles, so yeah.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Perfect, good, maybe some Aceta.
- 47:27Speaker 2: Metafine exactly, exactly.
- 47:29Speaker 1: This is absolutely incredible, guys, And no matter what the
- 47:32Speaker 1: weather's doing, you're showing this.
- 47:35Speaker 3: We are fully prepared rainer shine.
- 47:37Speaker 1: Do I understand this? Am I reading this correct? Us?
- 47:39Speaker 1: Of last year, twenty six thousand dollars raised for Alexis
- 47:43Speaker 1: Lemonade stand.
- 47:44Speaker 4: Yeah, last year we raised twenty six last year, yeah,
- 47:46Speaker 4: last year, twenty six. The goal this year is fifty thousand,
- 47:49Speaker 4: and so we think we think there is a very
- 47:52Speaker 4: very strong chance of us not just achieving that, but
- 47:55Speaker 4: exceeding that.
- 47:57Speaker 2: We're almost a forty thousand already.
- 47:59Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh wow.
- 48:01Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's without just any of the stuff that
- 48:03Speaker 4: happens on the day of the event.
- 48:05Speaker 2: Yeah, we get a lot of folks that come and
- 48:07Speaker 2: sign up the day of, so we will still have
- 48:09Speaker 2: two shirts available.
- 48:10Speaker 1: So yeah, this has really turned into you guys are
- 48:14Speaker 1: like notched now, this is really something huge. You should
- 48:19Speaker 1: be very proud of yourself.
- 48:21Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 48:23Speaker 1: I know you feel blessed from we do your community
- 48:26Speaker 1: very much. Yeah, yes, for showing up and all the
- 48:28Speaker 1: faces that you don't know, people that exactly you don't
- 48:33Speaker 1: get to me, right, but they're there because in some
- 48:37Speaker 1: way right, directly or indirectly, they have been touched from
- 48:41Speaker 1: some form of cancer. It's a hot button, it is.
- 48:44Speaker 1: It's just the word cancer a lot doesn't have to
- 48:47Speaker 1: be pediatric, which is whole other level.
- 48:49Speaker 3: That's a true statement.
- 48:50Speaker 1: But man, it's like, yeah, we're touched by.
- 48:53Speaker 4: This, right right, And that's the idea is just to
- 48:55Speaker 4: bring awareness obviously the pediatric cancer, but at the same
- 48:58Speaker 4: time we recognize that we're not alone in this, in
- 49:00Speaker 4: this in this battle, and and if it helps other folks,
- 49:04Speaker 4: either through their own personal struggles or someone in there,
- 49:07Speaker 4: someone in their family's loved one, then then that's that's great,
- 49:10Speaker 4: and we welcome them wholeheartedly and get them on board
- 49:14Speaker 4: for sure.
- 49:15Speaker 1: Right ahead.
- 49:16Speaker 5: I sorry.
- 49:17Speaker 2: I met a lady last weekend at the farmer's market
- 49:22Speaker 2: that's coming out to run. She had just recently lost
- 49:24Speaker 2: someone to cancer, and so she was so grateful to
- 49:28Speaker 2: have something that she felt like she could do because
- 49:31Speaker 2: she said she felt so helpless, you know, losing someone
- 49:35Speaker 2: that was close to her, and she was very excited
- 49:37Speaker 2: to be able to come out and participate. So yeah,
- 49:40Speaker 2: so I'm hopeful that you know that we can continue
- 49:43Speaker 2: that I know, I I don't think I've ever met
- 49:47Speaker 2: someone who hasn't at least known someone, whether it was
- 49:51Speaker 2: someone personal to them, a friend, a family member, or
- 49:54Speaker 2: just someone that they knew that has that has been
- 49:57Speaker 2: diagnosed with cancer.
- 49:59Speaker 5: So it's such a.
- 50:01Speaker 1: It just it.
- 50:02Speaker 2: Like Matt said, it touches absolutely everyone in some way,
- 50:05Speaker 2: shape or form.
- 50:06Speaker 1: So Peyton is so happy for what you guys have
- 50:17Speaker 1: done and what you're continuing to do with such tragedy
- 50:29Speaker 1: and great deep sadness. You guys have turned this around
- 50:34Speaker 1: and you've turned it into something massive that is hopefully
- 50:41Speaker 1: going to continue to have a residual effect on many
- 50:47Speaker 1: more thousands of people than it already has.
- 50:51Speaker 2: So hopeful.
- 50:53Speaker 1: Yeah, it's really something else.
- 50:55Speaker 4: Thank you, Thank you very much, and thanks for Dadie
- 50:58Speaker 4: for just giving a voice to it. I mean, yeah,
- 51:00Speaker 4: we are forever grateful and absolutely you are now part of.
- 51:06Speaker 1: Man that gives me goosebumps.
- 51:08Speaker 6: I am.
- 51:10Speaker 1: If I can sneak over there on Sunday, I'm gonna well,
- 51:14Speaker 1: And if I can't, I'm saving the date next year
- 51:17Speaker 1: on the calendar.
- 51:18Speaker 3: Awesome.

- 51:24Speaker 1: absolute pleasure to have you on. Thank real quick hit

- 51:56Speaker 4: We work with anyone who's looking to take their organization, unit, team,
- 52:02Speaker 4: whatever to the next level and become you know, empowered
- 52:06Speaker 4: to be their more authentic selves and leaders and whatnot.
- 52:10Speaker 4: That could be a college teams, military units, small businesses,
- 52:13Speaker 4: large businesses and all that sort of stuff, and just
- 52:15Speaker 4: give them an opportunity to to to enhance, you know,
- 52:21Speaker 4: enhance themselves in the role in which they fill in
- 52:24Speaker 4: their organization. So and we do that through an enduring relationship.
- 52:28Speaker 4: It's not a one and done type thing. It's a
- 52:30Speaker 4: long term partnership that we have because we know growth
- 52:33Speaker 4: takes time and the growth is hard sometimes, but we
- 52:37Speaker 4: do it in a positive manner and we just you know,
- 52:38Speaker 4: we look forward to working with folks, whether it's in
- 52:40Speaker 4: central Vermont or in Vermont in general or anywhere.
- 52:43Speaker 3: And so that's that's the crona coach.
