Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_04: Welcome to Strong, where we follow the For the Strength of Youth curriculum to help you get a little closer to Jesus Christ and a little more ready for what's ahead.
- 0:09SPEAKER_04: The temple, a mission, the life that you're building.
- 0:12SPEAKER_04: I'm Kirby Hayborn.
- 0:19SPEAKER_04: This month, your young women classes and ironic priesthood quorums, you're studying topic 10 from For the Strength of Youth.
- 0:26SPEAKER_04: Your body is sacred.
- 0:28SPEAKER_04: And it is.
- 0:29SPEAKER_04: There's one big question underneath the whole month.
- 0:33SPEAKER_04: How is living the law of chastity and the word of wisdom blessing you right now?
- 0:38SPEAKER_04: And why does God care how you treat your body?
- 0:45SPEAKER_04: Let me tell you a story.
- 0:47SPEAKER_04: I was serving a mission in the Dominican Republic, beautiful, amazing place.
- 0:51SPEAKER_04: One morning, my companion and I, we got a call.
- 0:54SPEAKER_04: There was another missionary that needed emergency surgery, and the hospital was short on blood.
- 1:00SPEAKER_04: Well, my comp and I, we didn't even think twice.
- 1:03SPEAKER_04: We were so excited to be able to serve and help out this missionary.
- 1:07SPEAKER_04: So, yes, we're going to go to the hospital.
- 1:08SPEAKER_04: We're going to donate blood.
- 1:10SPEAKER_04: We showed up in our missionary attire in Caribbean style.
- 1:13SPEAKER_04: It's short-sleeved white shirts and ties.
- 1:16SPEAKER_04: We were escorted to a stark room with a bunch of chairs.
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: We gave him our arms and we gave blood right away, super quick.
- 1:25SPEAKER_04: The nurses told us once they pulled the needles out and had the bag of blood that it needed to go through the blood bank there at the hospital, but we needed to go pull it from the blood bank ourselves, sign for it, and run it to another section of the hospital.
- 1:40SPEAKER_04: So that's what we did.
- 1:42SPEAKER_04: We ran down the hall as fast as we could because somebody needed that blood in the next few minutes.
- 1:49SPEAKER_04: As I was running, everything started to narrow.
- 1:53SPEAKER_04: Now, hindsight is 2020.
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: You can't give blood and then run down a hallway.
- 2:00SPEAKER_04: So I remember thinking as I was getting this tunnel vision and getting hot all over.
- 2:05SPEAKER_04: I gotta lie down.
- 2:06SPEAKER_04: I gotta lay down somewhere.
- 2:07SPEAKER_04: So I made it to this cement bench in the in the hallway of this hospital.
- 2:12SPEAKER_04: And I don't remember passing out, but I did.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: I'm laying down when I open my eyes and I wake up and there's a bunch of faces all around me.
- 2:21SPEAKER_04: There's a nurse, there's my companion.
- 2:24SPEAKER_04: Um, somebody's fanning me with the clipboard.
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: Are you all right?
- 2:27SPEAKER_04: And I'm thinking, we got to get this blood to where we need to take it.
- 2:31SPEAKER_04: But the whole point of this is that right in the middle of an emergency, my own body made a decision that I had no say in.
- 2:38SPEAKER_04: It didn't ask me, it just shut everything down.
- 2:46SPEAKER_04: Now, here's the thing.
- 2:47SPEAKER_04: My body didn't ask me permission in that hallway.
- 2:51SPEAKER_04: It doesn't ask permission now either.
- 2:53SPEAKER_04: You breathe without thinking about it.
- 2:56SPEAKER_04: Your heart beats.
- 2:58SPEAKER_04: Uh, your body is a miracle.
- 3:01SPEAKER_04: Let me give you an example.
- 3:02SPEAKER_04: Your spine is made up of 33 bones stacked on top of each other.
- 3:09SPEAKER_04: And these bones are built to bend and twist and absorb the shock of every single step without you ever asking it to.
- 3:18SPEAKER_04: Nobody taught it that.
- 3:19SPEAKER_04: It came that way.
- 3:21SPEAKER_04: Your body is not an accident.
- 3:24SPEAKER_04: God made it in his own image, the most glorious, majestic being in the universe.
- 3:31SPEAKER_04: And you were made to look like him.
- 3:35SPEAKER_04: Your body isn't just along for the ride while your spirit does the real work.
- 3:40SPEAKER_04: Doctrine and Covenants, section 88, verse 15, says it beautifully and plainly.
- 3:46SPEAKER_04: Spirit and body together are the soul of man.
- 3:50SPEAKER_04: They're a matched set.
- 3:53SPEAKER_04: Paul told the Corinthians that the body is a temple.
- 3:57SPEAKER_04: And I love this.
- 3:58SPEAKER_04: He says that you are not your own.
- 4:01SPEAKER_04: You were bought with a price.
- 4:04SPEAKER_04: For me, that changes the question from what am I allowed to do with my body to how do I take care of a temple.
- 4:17SPEAKER_04: I'm here with my friend Dr.
- 4:19SPEAKER_04: Beck.
- 4:19SPEAKER_04: He's a chiropractor with Beck Spinal Care, and he spent his whole career with the human body.
- 4:26SPEAKER_04: He played football at BYU, and he knows the inside of his temple better than almost anybody.
- 4:33SPEAKER_04: Dr.
- 4:33SPEAKER_04: Beck, thank you so much for being here with me.
- 4:35SPEAKER_04: It's great to be here for the invite.
- 4:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:38SPEAKER_04: It's a treat to have you here.
- 4:40SPEAKER_04: Um, I've never had someone sit so close in kind of a casual atmosphere, knowing exactly what's wrong with my body.
- 4:49SPEAKER_04: Do you do that?
- 4:50SPEAKER_03: Do you think that's I don't have x-ray vision?
- 4:52SPEAKER_03: That would be really cool.
- 4:53SPEAKER_04: But you can see how I'm slightly slouching and like, oh, you gotta sit up straighter and yeah.
- 4:58SPEAKER_04: I don't judge, but I do suggest.
- 5:01SPEAKER_04: Good.
- 5:02SPEAKER_04: I love it.
- 5:03SPEAKER_04: Um, Dr.
- 5:04SPEAKER_04: Beck, really quick, before we get into anything, what do you wish that every teenager understood about their own body?
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: The body's a gift, it's a miracle.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: From from when you were a twinkle and now you're an adult or a teenager or a youth, that your body is truly an amazing gift that that you know, and and the whole purpose of the body is the soul.
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: You know, it's the body, it's a spirit, it's a soul, and together it's an amazing experience.
- 5:38SPEAKER_04: I love that.
- 5:38SPEAKER_04: Well, this is gonna be the shortest episode ever because you just summed up everything.
- 5:42SPEAKER_04: That was so perfect.
- 5:43SPEAKER_04: But uh, I do want to talk more.
- 5:45SPEAKER_04: So before we get into more details about how amazing the human body is, um, it's time to find out how my body actually holds up under real pressure.
- 5:59SPEAKER_04: Since we're talking about how amazing our bodies are in this episode, and Dr.
- 6:03SPEAKER_04: Beck's a chiropractor, he agreed to show me how my body can heal itself by using techniques that he uses as a chiropractor.
- 6:13SPEAKER_04: Unfortunately, it's acupuncture.
- 6:16SPEAKER_04: And to make it a little more interesting, I'm gonna try to say a primary song after every needle is placed.
- 6:22SPEAKER_04: See if I've got power up here.
- 6:26SPEAKER_04: I'm terrified of needles and I'm already sweating and I'm scared.
- 6:31SPEAKER_04: What if my knee goes up?
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: What if my leg goes up when you I'm standing, I'm sitting over here.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: You're good.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: Okay, you can kick away.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: I might feel a little pinprick as I go in.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 6:41SPEAKER_04: Start singing your song.
- 6:42SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 6:43SPEAKER_04: Um, I'm trying to be like Jesus.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: Oh, we got in.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: Good job.
- 6:47SPEAKER_04: What?
- 6:48SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 6:48SPEAKER_04: All right, I gotta name a new one.
- 6:49SPEAKER_04: Okay, here we go.
- 6:51SPEAKER_04: Um, oh boy.
- 6:53SPEAKER_04: I I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
- 6:56SPEAKER_04: That's a good one.
- 6:59SPEAKER_04: Okay, another one went in.
- 7:00SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 7:01SPEAKER_04: Um, stars were gleaming.
- 7:03SPEAKER_04: Oh my goodness, I don't feel anything right now.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: Sometimes it goes away.
- 7:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 7:08SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: Now this one's your tighter one.
- 7:10SPEAKER_04: Oh, okay.
- 7:11SPEAKER_04: This one's a hard one.
- 7:12SPEAKER_04: And um, we're gonna do uh uh Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam.
- 7:17SPEAKER_04: That's good.
- 7:17SPEAKER_04: That's a good one.
- 7:17SPEAKER_04: That's a good one.
- 7:18SPEAKER_04: Okay, uh is it it?
- 7:21SPEAKER_04: That's it.
- 7:22SPEAKER_04: Oh my goodness.
- 7:24SPEAKER_04: I okay.
- 7:25SPEAKER_04: Got two more to go.
- 7:26SPEAKER_04: Two more, okay.
- 7:27SPEAKER_04: Okay, this is a song that I know.
- 7:30SPEAKER_04: Give said the little stream.
- 7:31SPEAKER_04: Oh, that's a good one.
- 7:32SPEAKER_04: Oh, that's a good one.
- 7:33SPEAKER_04: Okay, I am a child of God.
- 7:36SPEAKER_04: That's a kid song and an adult one.
- 7:38SPEAKER_04: That's for everybody.
- 7:39SPEAKER_04: All right, okay, we did it.
- 7:41SPEAKER_04: Take a deep breath.
- 7:42SPEAKER_04: Good job.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: All right, so let me explain just a little bit okay why in the world do acupuncture.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: Okay, so you strained your muscles, yeah, your body's in protect mode.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: So these needles reset the tension and the signal from your brain.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: So we get lots of signals from our brain.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: Some of them are good, some of them are overwhelming.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Sometimes we need to help control those uh signals from our brain.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Can I look?
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:09SPEAKER_04: Oh my goodness, there are needles in my arm, and it doesn't hurt.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: Thank you, Dr.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: Beck.
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: This is amazing.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna let him sit for just a couple minutes.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 8:22SPEAKER_04: We'll sing.
- 8:24SPEAKER_04: I'm trying to be like Jesus.
- 8:28SPEAKER_04: At times I attempted to make a wrong choice.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: Love one another as Jesus loves you.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: For these are the things Jesus taught.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: Oh my goodness, Dr.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: Beck, you rough.
- 8:50SPEAKER_04: Dr.
- 8:50SPEAKER_04: Beck, he just proved something on camera that most of us walk around never noticing.
- 8:55SPEAKER_04: Our body is amazing and we should treat it well.
- 8:59SPEAKER_04: Dr.
- 9:00SPEAKER_04: Beck, what are some ways that we can treat our body like a temple?
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: Well, first off, we need the essentials.
- 9:08SPEAKER_03: And I treat a lot of patients that are newborns up until I literally adjusted a hundred-year-old patient.
- 9:17SPEAKER_03: And the secret is you gotta keep moving.
- 9:20SPEAKER_03: So you gotta get outside, you gotta keep moving.
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: Once you stop moving, you become old.
- 9:27SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: So that's step one is the movement aspect.
- 9:30SPEAKER_03: And then I really believe in the five pillars of health.
- 9:34SPEAKER_03: Eat right, move right, think right, get your nervous system checked.
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: We'll talk about the nervous system today, and make sure you're sleeping.
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: Those are the five pillars of health.
- 9:44SPEAKER_04: I love that.
- 9:45SPEAKER_04: That's how you treat your body like a temple.
- 9:47SPEAKER_04: So then how does treating our body like a temple help us heal faster or even prevent injury?
- 9:54SPEAKER_03: Well, we want an optimal experience in this life, and we're gonna have setbacks and trials and hardships.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: And so we just want to make sure we have you know our best shot.
- 10:08unknown: Yeah.
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: You know, be prepared for you know adversity by taking care of our body because we're gonna face adversity, you know.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: We're all we're mortal, right?
- 10:17SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be a physical death, but we want to get as much out of life as we can.
- 10:22SPEAKER_04: If you are lacking in one of those five pillars, how does that affect either healing or performance?
- 10:28SPEAKER_04: So let's say sleep.
- 10:31SPEAKER_03: Well, yes, I want to answer your first question.
- 10:35SPEAKER_03: Okay, but it really affects our attitude.
- 10:39SPEAKER_03: When we're not feeling good, our attitude's you know, troubled.
- 10:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Then it's harder to heal, it's harder to, you know, do well in school, or it's harder to get up and be motivated to do things.
- 10:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: And so you got to take care of your body, because if you don't, then it's gonna affect your attitude.
- 11:00SPEAKER_04: I love that.
- 11:01SPEAKER_04: You that it's connected.
- 11:03SPEAKER_04: Your mind and your body, they're connected.
- 11:05SPEAKER_04: And if you have a good attitude, you heal better.
- 11:07SPEAKER_04: I love that.
- 11:08SPEAKER_04: What is one of the most incredible things you've seen uh a body do to heal or protect itself?
- 11:14SPEAKER_04: Maybe something that um the person didn't even realize was happening.
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: So there was a lady who was out of the country and she missed a step and she broke her arm, and it was a nasty break.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: It was one of those complicated breaks.
- 11:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it needed surgery.
- 11:30SPEAKER_03: So she flew back to the States, got surgery.
- 11:33SPEAKER_03: After the surgery, her arm was completely limp.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: She just had no motor muscle.
- 11:38SPEAKER_03: And they they actually went back inside to double check the nerve to get cut or pinched.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: So that nerve controls you know, strength and and healing.
- 11:47SPEAKER_03: So the nerve was there, but you know, we think maybe just a lot of the blood pulled up and pinched some nerves.
- 11:54SPEAKER_03: And so it took a long time to get better.
- 11:57SPEAKER_03: And so even the doctor said, We don't think you're gonna get this back.
- 12:01SPEAKER_03: So it took a lot of work, it took months.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: And she's you know, we're all amazed it came back to life when you when you get that.
- 12:11SPEAKER_04: It was limp and it came back.
- 12:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but it took a lot of hard work, she it took dedication.
- 12:17SPEAKER_03: She does exercises every day.
- 12:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we did a lot of acupuncture and other therapies, new cool stuff like shockwave and um making sure that the nerves from her neck to her arm were clear.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: But yeah, it was amazing.
- 12:32SPEAKER_04: You talked a second ago about um the mind being connected.
- 12:37SPEAKER_04: Um, we've talked a little bit about uh the voices inside your head, like the motivational ones or the ones that say you're not good enough.
- 12:45SPEAKER_04: Talk to me about why that's important.
- 12:53SPEAKER_03: So our mind our brain is what controls everything in our body.
- 12:58SPEAKER_03: And we need to be able to control what our brain is telling our body to some degree.
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: Now there's like the autonomic nervous system.
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we don't have to tell our heart to beat or our lungs to breathe, it's automatic.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: But sometimes when we hear a voice that says, You're not good enough, you're not gonna be able to do this, you failed, all of a sudden we put a stop on our progress.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and that's why the you know, we just have to tell, you know, those thoughts that come into our head, I'm not going down that road, or I can do it.
- 13:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, or I'm gonna keep trying.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna give up today.
- 13:37SPEAKER_04: Have you seen people with that attitude when they come into you with broken arms or or legs or back problems?
- 13:46SPEAKER_04: Have you noticed attitude helps them heal?
- 13:49SPEAKER_03: Well, the ones that usually are working on the solution are the ones with good attitudes and they inspire me.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: It's like, wow, that person is going through a lot.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it inspires me.
- 13:59SPEAKER_03: And so I see the ones that are usually proactive.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: And yes, they they just say, I'm gonna get better, Doc.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: I'm like, yes, you are, you will get better.
- 14:11SPEAKER_04: I love that.
- 14:13SPEAKER_04: So you've spent your whole life with the human body, studying it, fixing it.
- 14:18SPEAKER_04: Uh, when you were a football player, how has being so involved in the human body changed how you see it spiritually or um how you see it as a temple?
- 14:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, one of my favorite classes was biochemistry at BYU.
- 14:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: And we learned, you know, how much food you eat, what goes to the liver, and it does all these amazing things.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: So our bodies can do such amazing things, our spirits can do such amazing things.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: And Heavenly Father asks us to treat it like a temple.
- 14:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 14:53SPEAKER_03: You know, he has this big plan in place for us.
- 14:57SPEAKER_03: And we just have to take care of the essentials.
- 15:01SPEAKER_04: Oh, I love that.
- 15:02SPEAKER_03: And so, you know, what are our essentials?
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: You know, he keeps it really simple.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: Treat your body like a temple.
- 15:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 15:09SPEAKER_03: Keep it organized, keep it clean, keep things simple.
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: That's it.
- 15:14SPEAKER_04: Have simple goals.
- 15:16SPEAKER_04: Was there ever a time growing up that you were thankful that you were treating your body like a temple?
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: In high school, I was a sophomore, and I had just gotten the starting third base position.
- 15:30SPEAKER_03: And we played on this dirt field.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: Wasn't no grass nice infield, and there was a big dip in the field.
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: And so there was a weird spot to catch, you know.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, the grounders or the pop-ups.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:47SPEAKER_03: And so after practice, I said, Hey coach, will you hit me some, you know, grounders?
- 15:52SPEAKER_03: And I'm trying to get this ball off the, you know, short hop it.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: And, you know, any coach, he loves hitting hard balls to kids.
- 15:59SPEAKER_03: And I was just, you know, catching the ball, throwing it into a net first.
- 16:03SPEAKER_03: So I only lived a couple blocks away, and he's like, Hey, Beck, I'll give I'll give you a ride home.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: So he's he's giving me a ride home, and he says to me, you know, people are watching you and people respect you.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: And he said, I actually went to church when I was 13, 14 years old.
- 16:22SPEAKER_03: I I was a deacon, I think I I was a teacher.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: Is that what you call it?
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: I was like, Yeah.
- 16:27SPEAKER_03: And he said, People what people notice you.
- 16:30SPEAKER_03: He's like, I notice you.
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: And and I had no idea he was he had been a m, you know, he was a member of the church.
- 16:36SPEAKER_03: Um and he just said to me, if you obey the word of wisdom and keep the law of chastity, there's there's nothing you can't do.
- 16:46SPEAKER_03: He actually played semi-professional baseball and he had gotten some DUIs.
- 16:51SPEAKER_03: And the first DUI, you know, and then the second one, it really haltered his progress, like he couldn't drive anymore.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: And so that that was a good experience for me at the right time.
- 17:03SPEAKER_03: I'm 15 years old, I'm about to drive, yeah, and date and all these things.
- 17:07SPEAKER_03: And for him to tell me, obey the word of wisdom and the law of chastity, and there won't be anything you can't do really helped set me up for long-term goals.
- 17:16SPEAKER_04: Why do you think those two things are are so powerful that when you obey the word of wisdom and the law of chastity, uh that you find success?
- 17:25SPEAKER_04: Why why do you think he said that it is simple, you know?
- 17:32SPEAKER_03: Those two things are pretty simple and it's taking care of your body.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, here he wanted to play for professional baseball, but he just had these little obstacles get in the way.
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:44SPEAKER_03: And, you know, we can look at commandments as hard things.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: Well, we can look at them as blessings.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:52SPEAKER_03: Like, wow, commandments are great.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: They help me be happy.
- 17:55SPEAKER_03: Oh, wow.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: And that's what he saw.
- 17:57SPEAKER_03: He saw that if I kept the commandments, I would be a happier person and live a fuller life with my body and my spirit.
- 18:04SPEAKER_04: Do you know what's amazing?
- 18:05SPEAKER_04: Is that you weren't uh just showing up to the baseball practices and saying, hey, look, everybody, look at how good I am.
- 18:13SPEAKER_04: I'm obeying this commandment.
- 18:14SPEAKER_04: It was how you lived, and I'm sure how you looked, how you were able to perform, that he could see.
- 18:20SPEAKER_04: And I love that he said everybody else sees that you are doing something different.
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: Well, he saw that a lot of the players did pick at me here and there.
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: And uh, hey, let's go party.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: Everybody but you know, Beck.
- 18:34SPEAKER_03: You know, but yeah.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: Um, but no, the he he saw the long-term benefits.
- 18:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 18:42SPEAKER_04: I love that.
- 18:43SPEAKER_04: Thank you for sharing that.
- 18:44SPEAKER_04: Now I've got a question for you.
- 18:46SPEAKER_04: Tell me about a time that you pushed your body further than you thought you could.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: A time I pushed my body, and I was surprised about what I could do was just this last Saturday.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: I'm a mountain bike racer and we're at the race, and there was a point on the trail where I was all by myself and I was dying.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: It was a hard climb.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: And then I heard from the middle of nowhere someone was like, You win this battle.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: And so I pushed harder than I thought I could, and I finally broke through that pain gate, and I'm just so thankful for Heavenly Father and for my body because during those races, I'm talking to him the entire time, and he helps me get through those pain gates.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: So it's good.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: There was a time just a couple weeks ago when I had a mountain bike race and I was feeling pretty sick, and um I decided um about halfway through that I was gonna be done just calling quits on it because uh my lungs started not feeling good and my legs were cramping.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: Um but I decided to push through anyways, and there was a great reward at the end for that.
- 19:47SPEAKER_04: Dr.
- 19:48SPEAKER_04: Beck, every episode we have uh youth um submit a question that maybe they are too afraid to ask in class or their quorum, and uh I'd love to unpack it with you.
- 20:00SPEAKER_04: So this question is from a youth that was sent in, and it says, What if my body doesn't work like everyone else's?
- 20:09SPEAKER_04: Meaning uh an illness or an injury or a disability, does that mean that it's less sacred or that God loves it less?
- 20:19SPEAKER_04: That's a hard thing to be sitting with.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: And as I've seen a whole spectrum of injuries or illnesses, you know, I have a sister with Down syndrome.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: I have a patient that gets wheeled in in a wheelchair and he has you know spina bifida and he can't use his legs, and you know, I think it God wants to see what you do with what you do have.
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: You know, it's the gift, it's the parable of the talents.
- 20:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, somebody gets maybe ten talents, yeah, someone gets five, and somebody only gets one.
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:00SPEAKER_03: What will you do with the one talent that you do have?
- 21:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, what will you do with your last breath?
- 21:10SPEAKER_03: Um I just went to a funeral two weeks ago for my aunt when she was 63.
- 21:18SPEAKER_03: She died of cancer.
- 21:20SPEAKER_03: She was given three to six months to live, and she lived six more uh years because she had a good attitude.
- 21:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:28SPEAKER_03: And she had count on hospice, um, she had added leukemia to the cancers, and she basically didn't have red blood cells or um you know platelets anymore.
- 21:45SPEAKER_03: So she stopped her infusions and she just had a a couple days to live.
- 21:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:50SPEAKER_03: So my uncle shared this story, and he said that she would just yell help, you know, those last few nights, and he'd help her move to get comfortable.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: Well, she said, help this one night, and he couldn't find her in bed.
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: She'd gotten out of bed in the wheelchair.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: He didn't know how.
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: And she said, I need to get out of this room.
- 22:10SPEAKER_03: So he wheels her out of the room.
- 22:12SPEAKER_03: And her last morning of her life, she spent four hours from 4 a.m.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: to 8 a.m.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: getting 300 names that were passed out after her funeral of temple names to do in the temple.
- 22:24SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 22:24SPEAKER_03: So I mean, here she has a devastating injury.
- 22:29SPEAKER_03: And how did she view it?
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: She viewed what can I do with what God's given me today with her last little bit of energy.
- 22:39SPEAKER_04: That's amazing.
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: So it comes back to our attitude.
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: We can't compare.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: She never got down.
- 22:46SPEAKER_03: That, you know, she only got a short time with some grandkids.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: Um, she just asked herself, what can I do positive today?
- 22:53SPEAKER_04: What can I do today, even with this broken body?
- 22:56SPEAKER_04: Uh, I love the FSY pamphlet in this chapter.
- 22:59SPEAKER_04: It says, of course, your body is not perfect now, but the experiences that you're having with your body can help you prepare to one day receive a perfect, resurrected, and glorified body.
- 23:11SPEAKER_04: That's exactly what Dr.
- 23:13SPEAKER_04: Beckett was just talking about.
- 23:14SPEAKER_04: That what are you doing right now with what you have?
- 23:18SPEAKER_04: Whatever your body he's carrying right now, Jesus Christ is who gets you through it.
- 23:23SPEAKER_04: And his aunt is a perfect example.
- 23:26SPEAKER_04: She felt that call to help those that had gone before who hadn't participated in temple ordinances.
- 23:32SPEAKER_04: And she felt that spirit of Jesus Christ.
- 23:36SPEAKER_04: Jesus is your strength, especially on the days that your body reminds you it isn't perfect yet.
- 23:42unknown: Dr.
- 23:43SPEAKER_04: Beck, thank you so much for being here with me.
- 23:45SPEAKER_04: I've learned so much.
- 23:46SPEAKER_04: And maybe I'll come in and get the other elbow acupunctured.
- 23:50SPEAKER_04: I just got to build up enough courage.
- 23:53SPEAKER_04: It's all about your attitude.
- 23:55SPEAKER_04: Yes, it is.
- 23:56SPEAKER_04: I'll have a better attitude next time.
- 24:02SPEAKER_04: All right, here's your move.
- 24:04SPEAKER_04: This week, pick one thing, one of those five things that Dr.
- 24:08SPEAKER_04: Beck mentioned, like sleep or food or movement or rest, and do it on purpose, like you're taking care of something sacred.
- 24:19SPEAKER_04: Not because you have to, but because of what it actually is: a temple.
- 24:25SPEAKER_04: That's strong for this week.
- 24:28SPEAKER_04: Remember, you are a beloved son or daughter of God, and he has a work for you to do.
- 24:34SPEAKER_04: Go do it.
- 24:36SPEAKER_04: I'd like to thank our sponsors, Jared and Holly Swain, for making Strong possible.
- 24:41SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
