- 0:02Speaker 1: I just want you to see that picture, okay? The
- 0:06Speaker 1: lady you shot, that's her daughter, okay? And I want
- 0:10Speaker 1: you to look at that picture there so that every
- 0:13Speaker 1: night when you go to sleep in your jail cell,
- 0:15Speaker 1: that's the face you see, because you ruined her life.
- 0:18Speaker 1: You understand me?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Think about how a contract hit goes. In and out, one,
- 0:45Speaker 2: two shots, very clean. The only thing that made it
- 0:50Speaker 2: different from a contract hit was the number of times
- 0:52Speaker 2: that she was shot.
- 0:54Speaker 3: It's a case that has more twists and turns than
- 0:56Speaker 3: a Stephen King novel.
- 0:58Speaker 1: You're willing to kill another human being because.
- 1:00Speaker 4: You love him.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Humphrey is accused of teaching his wife of one day
- 1:04Speaker 2: how to kill.
- 1:05Speaker 4: Is this the gun you kept in your car?
- 1:07Speaker 5: Yes, sir.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Is this the gun you later would use.
- 1:11Speaker 6: What exactly is so wrong in you that can convince
- 1:16Speaker 6: you to do something like that?
- 1:19Speaker 4: So you're standing, shooting through the window of a car
- 1:25Speaker 4: at a woman you've never met, and you empty the chamber. Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.
- 1:37Speaker 4: This is a cold-blooded execution. It did no part of you.
- 1:42Speaker 4: I think, what the hell am I doing?
- 2:03Speaker 7: Prosecutors say she sat in a rental car off the
- 2:06Speaker 7: Courtney Campbell Causeway outside the bar where Raza worked, followed
- 2:09Speaker 7: her home, and shot her eight times.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Late one night in July 2003, Sandra Rozzo, a bartender
- 2:20Speaker 4: and former model, pulled into this garage at her home.
- 2:26Speaker 4: She had no idea someone was waiting to kill her.
- 2:35Speaker 2: I was the on-call detective that night. The crime scene
- 2:39Speaker 2: itself in the car was brutal.
- 2:42Speaker 4: It was gruesome. There was a lot of blood all
- 2:46Speaker 4: over that car.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Experience tells you that one or two shots, it could
- 2:52Speaker 2: have been a robbery. But there were seven, eight shots
- 2:57Speaker 2: that were fired at her at close range. The first
- 3:01Speaker 2: thing that came to mind was that this was not
- 3:05Speaker 2: a random act of violence.
- 3:06Speaker 4: This was, I.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Need to silence you. I need to put an end
- 3:12Speaker 3: to you. It's cold, it's calculated, it's premeditated.
- 3:19Speaker 8: It was very terrifying for Ms.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Razo.
- 3:27Speaker 8: And we know that because she was in the driver's
- 3:31Speaker 8: side of the vehicle, but she wound up getting shot
- 3:35Speaker 8: all the way over on the passenger side of the vehicle.
- 3:38Speaker 8: We believe she was trying to escape out just to
- 3:40Speaker 8: get away from the person who smashed on her window
- 3:43Speaker 8: with a gun and then started opening fire on her.
- 3:51Speaker 4: It took detectives six months to make an arrest.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Sit over.
- 4:00Speaker 5: There.
- 4:02Speaker 4: The unlikely suspect was a 20-year-old woman previously unknown to
- 4:06Speaker 4: the police. Ashley Humphrey had overcome a turbulent childhood to
- 4:14Speaker 4: graduate with honours from high school.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Okay, Ashley, an indictment was handed down for you for
- 4:24Speaker 1: the first-degree homicide of Sandra Rosso, okay? And you'll have
- 4:32Speaker 1: to answer to the charge of murder of the first-degree.
- 4:38Speaker 9: Ashley Humphrey said she pulled the trigger, but she said
- 4:41Speaker 9: she is not responsible for Ms.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Rosso's murder.
- 4:43Speaker 3: She says her husband was such a manipulator and was
- 4:46Speaker 3: so controlling, he made her do it.
- 4:49Speaker 10: Ashley was such a promising young girl. She could have
- 4:53Speaker 10: done a lot with her life, and yet she ran
- 4:56Speaker 10: into this brick wall of a man, Tracy Humphrey, who
- 4:59Speaker 10: turns out to be evil, and her life just takes
- 5:02Speaker 10: a right turn.
- 5:04Speaker 11: Did you ask her to kill for you or did
- 5:07Speaker 11: you let her kill for you?
- 5:09Speaker 9: Either one.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Absolutely not. I had no idea that she had that intention.
- 5:21Speaker 4: I've been given one hour to interview Ashley. She is
- 5:28Speaker 4: halfway through a 25-year sentence for killing Sandra Rosso. but
- 5:34Speaker 4: she has always maintained it was her husband, Tracy, who
- 5:37Speaker 4: manipulated her into committing the murder. Is this what really happened?
- 5:46Speaker 4: Or was Ashley a cold and calculating killer who knew
- 5:49Speaker 4: exactly what she was doing? Ashley, good to meet you.
- 5:58Speaker 5: Good to meet you too, Piers.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Come over here. Let's talk about Sandy. The night that
- 6:05Speaker 4: you kill her, you go to the club where she's
- 6:08Speaker 4: working and you wait for hours. And then she comes out.
- 6:12Speaker 4: What happens?
- 6:15Speaker 5: I waited for her to pull into her garage and
- 6:21Speaker 5: followed her in with the gun and shot her several times.
- 6:26Speaker 4: What were you feeling as you shot her?
- 6:29Speaker 5: I was thinking... If I don't do this, he's going
- 6:34Speaker 5: to be angry. And I was thinking that I wanted
- 6:45Speaker 5: to get it over with. And I really wasn't feeling much.
- 6:53Speaker 4: How many times did you shoot her?
- 6:56Speaker 5: Seven or eight. I... remember there were no more bullets
- 7:04Speaker 5: in that chamber.
- 7:09Speaker 4: So you're standing, shooting through the window of a car
- 7:14Speaker 4: at a woman you've never met. Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.
- 7:25Speaker 4: And then you stare into her face for several seconds.
- 7:28Speaker 4: Why do you do that?
- 7:29Speaker 5: Tracy wanted me to Look into her eyes. He said
- 7:35Speaker 5: that there was a look.
- 7:37Speaker 4: What is that look? What are you looking for?
- 7:41Speaker 5: There is a vacancy there. It's a horrible look.
- 7:58Speaker 4: I'm seeing her.
- 7:59Speaker 5: I'm seeing her right now.
- 8:00Speaker 1: I'm sorry.
- 8:00Speaker 5: I'm sorry.
- 8:20Speaker 4: When you had satisfied yourself that she was dead, you
- 8:23Speaker 4: get back in your car and you start to drive home.
- 8:31Speaker 4: And you call Tracy to tell him. that you've been successful,
- 8:34Speaker 4: she's dead. Tell me about that call.
- 8:44Speaker 5: I told him it was finished. And he said he'd
- 8:53Speaker 5: ordered pizza, or he was going to order pizza. And
- 9:02Speaker 5: I asked him for double cheese.
- 9:05Speaker 4: You've just pumped a random woman you don't know with
- 9:10Speaker 4: eight bullets. And the only thought in your mind is
- 9:14Speaker 4: how much cheese to have on your pizza. I mean,
- 9:18Speaker 4: this is the stuff of a complete psycho. That's what
- 9:21Speaker 4: people would be thinking of themselves.
- 9:38Speaker 12: And I think you know in your heart, right now,
- 9:50Speaker 12: All she did was speak the truth about a matter.
- 9:56Speaker 4: And I think you know in your heart, right now,
- 10:00Speaker 4: you know what type of individual Tracy is. Had he
- 10:05Speaker 4: been abusive to you?
- 10:08Speaker 5: If he was emotionally abusive, it was only in very
- 10:11Speaker 5: subtle ways. By, you know, picking out my clothes and,
- 10:15Speaker 5: you know, telling me what would look good in makeup.
- 10:17Speaker 5: And I thought that these were and I did not
- 10:21Speaker 5: see them as the controlling maneuvers that they were.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Were you in love with him? I.
- 10:29Speaker 5: thought I was in love with him. I really did.
- 10:32Speaker 5: But it was a sort of... need... to love him.
- 10:39Speaker 5: And I really wanted this person to save me.
- 10:44Speaker 4: The woman who threatened to wreck this relationship was Tracy's
- 10:47Speaker 4: former girlfriend. 37-year-old Sandra Rosso, a mother who worked two
- 10:53Speaker 4: jobs to make a better life for her and her daughter.
- 10:59Speaker 5: Sandy was very genuine.
- 11:00Speaker 13: She poured her heart out and gave her heart fully
- 11:03Speaker 13: to people that she cared about. And that was a
- 11:05Speaker 13: very easy quality for Sandy, so it was very easy
- 11:07Speaker 13: to get to know her and become very good friends
- 11:09Speaker 13: with her. She was a very happy person. And then
- 11:15Speaker 13: Tracy came in her life, and it just kind of
- 11:17Speaker 13: went downhill after that.
- 11:26Speaker 9: Sandy and Tracy first met at the beginning of 02
- 11:29Speaker 9: when we opened the Club Inferno. They pretty quickly developed
- 11:34Speaker 9: a personal relationship and a sexual relationship from that moment forward.
- 11:38Speaker 9: They dated on and off. I would characterize Sandy and
- 11:41Speaker 9: Tracy's relationship as volatile.
- 11:47Speaker 4: Tracy had not long been out of prison when he
- 11:50Speaker 4: met Sandra. He had served nearly three years for assault
- 11:54Speaker 4: and battery. Sandra was completely unaware.
- 11:59Speaker 13: So I got a phone call early in the morning.
- 12:01Speaker 13: Sandy had called me frantic and hysterical, crying. And she
- 12:06Speaker 13: was terrified. She explained to me that Tracy had basically
- 12:12Speaker 13: verbally and physically abused her and kept her hostage in
- 12:15Speaker 13: her apartment for I think it was three days. I
- 12:20Speaker 13: think she was slightly fearful because pressing charges meant that
- 12:23Speaker 13: he was going to go to prison. And he made
- 12:26Speaker 13: it very clear to her that he was not going
- 12:28Speaker 13: back to prison and that he would do whatever it
- 12:30Speaker 13: took to make sure that that didn't happen.
- 12:34Speaker 4: When did Tracy first mention Sandy to you? And did
- 12:38Speaker 4: he tell you that he was facing this court case
- 12:41Speaker 4: involving an alleged very serious sexual assault, possibly rape, where
- 12:46Speaker 4: potentially he might go back to prison for 10 years?
- 12:50Speaker 5: He did not tell me about her until he knew...
- 12:55Speaker 5: I was enamored with him. I was living with him
- 12:58Speaker 5: at this point. This is when he brings her up
- 13:02Speaker 5: and just starts telling me that she's full of it
- 13:07Speaker 5: and wants to put him in prison because she was
- 13:08Speaker 5: mad that he broke up with her. And at this point,
- 13:13Speaker 5: I believe everything he tells me because I'm a stupid
- 13:17Speaker 5: 20 year old.
- 13:18Speaker 4: What strikes me immediately having met you just for a
- 13:21Speaker 4: few minutes is you're not stupid. I mean, you're an
- 13:23Speaker 4: intelligent woman. And you weren't like 15, you were 20.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Are no alarm bells ringing with you at this stage
- 13:32Speaker 4: about this guy?
- 13:34Speaker 5: None, unfortunately, I have to be honest. And nothing was saying,
- 13:39Speaker 5: get away.
- 13:40Speaker 14: So, I mean, you probably know better than we do,
- 13:46Speaker 14: you know, how he is and that he can make
- 13:49Speaker 14: you do things that, you know, for his benefit.
- 13:54Speaker 10: I spoke to Ashley very briefly. We exchanged some letters,
- 14:00Speaker 10: spoke on the phone once, and that was it. Now
- 14:03Speaker 10: she's had years and years to contemplate it all.
- 14:06Speaker 4: It's different.
- 14:07Speaker 10: But at the time, you know.
- 14:08Speaker 4: It was very raw.
- 14:09Speaker 10: But when you look at all the circumstances and all
- 14:12Speaker 10: the evidence in this case, you understand that Ashley Humphrey
- 14:17Speaker 10: was Tracy Humphrey's weapon.
- 14:23Speaker 7: Humphrey prosecutors say Todd Ashley Humphrey had to shoot and
- 14:27Speaker 7: load a gun. He called the shots.
- 14:31Speaker 10: I think that she was following orders.
- 14:37Speaker 2: I don't know what he did to manipulate her to
- 14:40Speaker 2: change her entire being, but whatever he did, it worked.
- 14:47Speaker 4: This case became a sensation in America. People wanted to
- 14:52Speaker 4: know how a young woman with no history of violence,
- 14:55Speaker 4: could be molded into a murderer. But what really baffles
- 14:59Speaker 4: me is that she had the opportunity to come to
- 15:03Speaker 4: her senses and stop this madness. Because, incredibly, she tried
- 15:08Speaker 4: to kill Sandy once before. Maybe Ashley Humphrey wasn't quite
- 15:15Speaker 4: the naive, stupid 20-year-old she claimed to be. You decided
- 15:19Speaker 4: to kill Sandy? And you and Tracy discuss how you're
- 15:25Speaker 4: going to do this and you decide you're going to
- 15:27Speaker 4: shoot Sandy. You've been watching her movements, you knew where
- 15:31Speaker 4: she lived, you've been following her around, haven't you?
- 15:34Speaker 5: Sometimes I would call her work to see if she
- 15:36Speaker 5: was there so that I could commit the crime.
- 15:50Speaker 4: I mean, there's an awful amount of pre-planning going on here.
- 15:54Speaker 4: It's not like this is a crime of spontaneous passion.
- 15:57Speaker 5: No.
- 15:58Speaker 4: You know, for weeks, you're stalking this woman. When you
- 16:03Speaker 4: get to the day when you try and shoot for
- 16:05Speaker 4: the first time, tell me exactly what happened.
- 16:12Speaker 5: She came out of her job to her car, and
- 16:15Speaker 5: I was waiting in a parking lot nearby with the
- 16:20Speaker 5: rifle in the car, and I shot at her. There
- 16:25Speaker 5: was a loud report, of course, and she, I remember
- 16:31Speaker 5: she ducked and looked around.
- 16:34Speaker 4: You failed to kill her because the bullet fired straight
- 16:37Speaker 4: into the wing mirror, which deflected it away from her. Otherwise,
- 16:40Speaker 4: she'd be dead in that moment.
- 16:45Speaker 5: That's very true.
- 16:48Speaker 4: You're training your sights on her like like an assassin.
- 16:52Speaker 4: This is a cold-blooded execution of a completely innocent woman
- 16:56Speaker 4: who's done nothing wrong. Did no part of you think,
- 17:02Speaker 4: what the hell am I doing? No. No.
- 17:14Speaker 5: I was numb.
- 17:21Speaker 4: You hide the evidence, you get rid of the gun,
- 17:24Speaker 4: you burn the car and you tell your mother what happened.
- 17:29Speaker 5: I wanted to come clean with her about everything and
- 17:33Speaker 5: I had just a moment of clarity where I was
- 17:36Speaker 5: considering going to the police and telling them everything and
- 17:40Speaker 5: then in the middle of me telling her what was
- 17:43Speaker 5: happening he showed up looking horrible and pathetic and begging
- 17:49Speaker 5: me to go back with him and I... I did.
- 17:55Speaker 4: What did your mother say to you?
- 17:57Speaker 5: She was screaming for me not to go. She was horrified.
- 18:07Speaker 4: Less than one month later, Tracey married Ashley. Under American law,
- 18:15Speaker 4: couples cannot be compelled to testify against each other if
- 18:19Speaker 4: they commit a crime during their marriage.
- 18:25Speaker 5: We applied for the marriage license on a Monday and
- 18:28Speaker 5: we were married on a Friday. There were no exchange
- 18:31Speaker 5: of vows or any ceremony. We went to eat that
- 18:34Speaker 5: night at the Cheesecake Factory. That was all the fanfare
- 18:40Speaker 5: there was.
- 18:40Speaker 4: At what point did you and Tracy discuss another attempt
- 18:46Speaker 4: to try and kill Sandy?
- 18:49Speaker 5: The day after we were married, the July 5th. He,
- 18:55Speaker 5: as soon as we woke up, he said, you know,
- 18:57Speaker 5: you have to do this. Those were his exact words.
- 19:16Speaker 15: Can you really make somebody do something? that it isn't
- 19:21Speaker 15: in their personality or their moral makeup to do, that's questionable.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Tracy had the ability to manipulate women. There were no
- 19:32Speaker 2: other forces in Ashley's life that would have played such
- 19:35Speaker 2: a role in her behavior change.
- 19:40Speaker 4: Who is the first person to suggest that Sandy has
- 19:44Speaker 4: to die?
- 19:46Speaker 5: I suggested, what if she were not to show up
- 19:49Speaker 5: in court? And that's where it started and it snowballed.
- 19:56Speaker 4: Tracy Humphrey feared the prospect of going back to prison
- 19:59Speaker 4: if Sandra Rozzo testified against him. Five weeks after Ashley's
- 20:04Speaker 4: failed attempt to kill Sandra, she tried again.
- 20:10Speaker 2: She said in her depo that Tracy told her to
- 20:13Speaker 2: follow her home and take care of business at her house.
- 20:17Speaker 2: And that's exactly what she did. We just were in disbelief.
- 20:21Speaker 2: It's like, how do you take this girl and completely
- 20:24Speaker 2: flip-flop her over and do things that are just so
- 20:29Speaker 2: downright plain evil?
- 20:32Speaker 6: I felt that Ashley had to have been under some
- 20:35Speaker 6: form of mind control. Honestly, I didn't know if he
- 20:38Speaker 6: had drugged her at some point or what, but she
- 20:41Speaker 6: thought he loved her, and she felt that he was
- 20:46Speaker 6: going to give her the stability and the love that
- 20:49Speaker 6: she had never had as long as she went along
- 20:52Speaker 6: with this and did this.
- 20:57Speaker 5: I think at this point I was so... brainwashed, and
- 21:01Speaker 5: I really hate that term, but I just want to
- 21:07Speaker 5: speak out for the fact that it's possible.
- 21:11Speaker 4: It's a pretty extraordinary thing, isn't it? You're a 20-year-old woman,
- 21:15Speaker 4: and you're sitting there thinking, the only way that I
- 21:18Speaker 4: can stop this situation deteriorating is to kill this woman
- 21:24Speaker 4: who I don't even know.
- 21:34Speaker 5: It's insane. Tracy was extremely manipulative and he was so
- 21:42Speaker 5: good at talking people into doing things that they wouldn't
- 21:45Speaker 5: normally do. And I think that he.
- 21:48Speaker 4: But if I can just jump in there, I mean... Sure.
- 21:53Speaker 4: Of course you can paint a picture that he's the controlling, manipulative,
- 21:56Speaker 4: devious person behind all this. But by your own admission,
- 22:01Speaker 4: just now.
- 22:04Speaker 4: It's your idea. The manipulative argument doesn't really cut much
- 22:13Speaker 4: ice here, does it? I mean, this is your idea,
- 22:17Speaker 4: your plan. You're the first person who says we should
- 22:20Speaker 4: kill her, and you're the one carrying through with it.
- 22:24Speaker 5: I don't think... It was his idea, but the words
- 22:28Speaker 5: just came out of my mouth. They were.
- 22:31Speaker 4: Come on, Ashley. Come on. I'm not stupid. You know,
- 22:37Speaker 4: you're getting some mental raise from him saying you must
- 22:40Speaker 4: commit murder.
- 22:40Speaker 5: No.
- 22:41Speaker 4: You had the idea. You suggested it to him. It's
- 22:45Speaker 4: from you. It's not good enough to say it's what
- 22:49Speaker 4: he was thinking. He hasn't said it.
- 22:57Speaker 5: I don't know why I let him into my head
- 23:00Speaker 5: the way that I did. and let him decide how
- 23:06Speaker 5: I should dress and how I should do my makeup
- 23:08Speaker 5: and where I should work and when I should sleep
- 23:11Speaker 5: and what I should eat. But he.
- 23:13Speaker 4: But you've already said to me that when he was
- 23:15Speaker 4: suggesting all those things to you, you didn't see it
- 23:18Speaker 4: as being nasty or unpleasant or controlling. You thought it
- 23:23Speaker 4: was quite sweet. I don't think that can now be
- 23:26Speaker 4: recategorized after the event. It's not how you said it
- 23:29Speaker 4: was earlier.
- 23:31Speaker 5: Well, it didn't feel... like that at the time, but no,
- 23:35Speaker 5: do you think that he wasn't doing those things for
- 23:39Speaker 5: an ultimate end?
- 23:41Speaker 4: I think that there's an argument that that could be
- 23:44Speaker 4: the case and there's an equal argument that you might
- 23:47Speaker 4: be recategorizing it to suit your story. That what was
- 23:51Speaker 4: perfectly harmless and just a guy being nice to you
- 23:56Speaker 4: is now an evil Svengali figure, you know, trying to
- 24:00Speaker 4: brainwash you into murder. That only really works if the
- 24:04Speaker 4: murder's his idea.
- 24:05Speaker 5: It was his idea.
- 24:11Speaker 4: Just to clarify, Tracy never said to you, you have
- 24:16Speaker 4: got to kill Sandy or I have got to kill Sandy.
- 24:20Speaker 4: She has got to be dead. He never said that.
- 24:23Speaker 4: You were the first to say it, weren't you?
- 24:25Speaker 5: I was the first to say it.
- 24:36Speaker 6: She shot her eight times. I just could never understand how,
- 24:42Speaker 6: after that first bullet struck this woman, how she did
- 24:46Speaker 6: not snap back into reality and kept pulling the trigger.
- 24:49Speaker 6: You're seeing this woman bleeding. She's screaming in pain, in terror.
- 24:58Speaker 6: How do you fire seven additional shots after you actually
- 25:03Speaker 6: visually see what you did with that first bullet? No
- 25:07Speaker 6: matter what kind of mind control you're in, how can
- 25:10Speaker 6: you not snap back into reality after that first bullet
- 25:15Speaker 6: struck this person? Sit over there.
- 25:26Speaker 15: When I look at the videos, she is not going
- 25:29Speaker 15: to give them an inch. She's defiant. She knows her rights.
- 25:34Speaker 15: She's unemotional.
- 25:36Speaker 1: You'll have to answer to the charge of murder in
- 25:41Speaker 1: the first degree.
- 25:42Speaker 13: Get my attorney.
- 25:44Speaker 1: What do you mean, get him? I mean, bring him here.
- 25:49Speaker 1: For what reason?
- 25:50Speaker 5: Because I'm not speaking.
- 25:52Speaker 1: I didn't do this.
- 25:53Speaker 5: I'm not speaking without my attorney in mind.
- 25:58Speaker 15: And it was very surprising to me that this was
- 26:00Speaker 15: the first time she'd ever been in that experience. Because
- 26:04Speaker 15: even first-time arrest on male defendants, they're going to kind
- 26:09Speaker 15: of plead, they're going to get upset, they're going to
- 26:12Speaker 15: protest their innocence.
- 26:14Speaker 4: Steely.
- 26:15Speaker 5: I want to speak to a lawyer.
- 26:17Speaker 4: That was it.
- 26:17Speaker 5: I wanted to ask if you would give us consent
- 26:21Speaker 5: to search your house.
- 26:22Speaker 4: You're saying no? Okay. And will you give us DNA?
- 26:28Speaker 5: Get me my attorney.
- 26:31Speaker 15: The concept of brainwashing and what's often called identification with
- 26:36Speaker 15: the aggressor or the Stockholm syndrome, that has a kind
- 26:41Speaker 15: of checkered history in social psychology.
- 26:43Speaker 5: You know, it's very, very controversial.
- 26:46Speaker 15: Can you really make somebody do something that it isn't
- 26:51Speaker 15: in their personality or their moral makeup to do, that's questionable.
- 26:56Speaker 16: What puzzles me the most about this whole thing right
- 27:00Speaker 16: here was if someone told me that I was under
- 27:03Speaker 16: arrest for a homicide that I didn't commit, I wouldn't
- 27:07Speaker 16: be sitting there.
- 27:08Speaker 1: As calm as you are.
- 27:21Speaker 9: I know that he has a terrible history, and maybe
- 27:23Speaker 9: he's a terrible person. I don't know. But Tracy explained
- 27:27Speaker 9: to me that Ashley was very jealous, very insecure, did
- 27:32Speaker 9: this on her own, came home and told him about it,
- 27:35Speaker 9: and he panicked. And he was like, no, no, no, no, no.
- 27:40Speaker 4: What the F did you do?
- 27:41Speaker 9: I was focused on him from day one to get
- 27:44Speaker 9: him and to alleviate Ashley, his wife, from the responsibility
- 27:49Speaker 9: of Being a premeditated murderer, she is.
- 27:52Speaker 4: That's not disputable. Ashley was not initially a suspect in
- 28:16Speaker 4: the murder of Sandra Rosso. her husband, Tracy Humphrey, was.
- 28:24Speaker 4: He desperately needed an alibi and persuaded a friend to
- 28:28Speaker 4: lie to the police. He tells you that this girl
- 28:34Speaker 4: that he's been accused of battering and he's facing this
- 28:37Speaker 4: court case has been murdered.
- 28:39Speaker 6: Yes.
- 28:40Speaker 4: In that moment, do you have any immediate suspicion he
- 28:43Speaker 4: may have been involved?
- 28:44Speaker 5: No.
- 28:44Speaker 6: I never saw anything remotely violent in him before.
- 28:48Speaker 4: When did he first say to you, I want you
- 28:50Speaker 4: to be the alibi?
- 28:51Speaker 6: Probably about 30 minutes after I got there, he said,
- 28:55Speaker 6: I feel backed into a corner and I don't know
- 28:57Speaker 6: what I'm going to have to do if you don't
- 28:58Speaker 6: go along with this.
- 29:00Speaker 5: I felt that.
- 29:01Speaker 6: As a threat, but I still was struggling with the
- 29:04Speaker 6: fact that this is my friend.
- 29:06Speaker 4: Did you see Ashley after the murder?
- 29:08Speaker 6: Yes, the same night.
- 29:10Speaker 4: In the gym?
- 29:11Speaker 6: Yes.
- 29:12Speaker 4: And how was she?
- 29:13Speaker 6: She seemed very... Tense. She said she was sick, but
- 29:19Speaker 6: she seemed very tense, very stressed. And oddly enough, I
- 29:24Speaker 6: don't know if he just decided spur of the moment
- 29:27Speaker 6: that I was going to be his alibi, but she
- 29:29Speaker 6: didn't seem to know anything about it until she walked
- 29:31Speaker 6: into the room. He said, isn't it nice that she's
- 29:34Speaker 6: going to be our alibi?
- 29:35Speaker 4: What happened next?
- 29:36Speaker 6: That's when he started really showing... the kind of person
- 29:41Speaker 6: he was. They both moved into my house. He said
- 29:45Speaker 6: it was because her stepfather was threatening her. He kept
- 29:51Speaker 6: an eye on everything I did, where I went, anybody
- 29:56Speaker 6: I talked to. I would see him sitting on my
- 29:59Speaker 6: couch if I would get up in the middle of
- 30:00Speaker 6: the night just staring at my door.
- 30:02Speaker 4: I mean, that's very intimidating. Oh, it was terrifying. Toby
- 30:10Speaker 4: told the police she had been with the couple that
- 30:13Speaker 4: night at Tracy's apartment. But their story was about to unravel.
- 30:21Speaker 2: Tracy's cell phone was hitting off of the tower near
- 30:24Speaker 2: where he was living. Ashley's cell phone was hitting off
- 30:27Speaker 2: of a tower very close within a block or so
- 30:30Speaker 2: of where the homicide occurred in Pinellas Park.
- 30:37Speaker 8: That changed the direction of the investigation from Tracy Humphrey
- 30:42Speaker 8: being the only person that would have committed this homicide
- 30:47Speaker 8: to at least Ashley being involved.
- 30:55Speaker 4: Detectives began to suspect that Ashley was the killer. Had
- 31:00Speaker 4: she acted on her own or planned the murder with Tracy?
- 31:05Speaker 4: They needed more evidence. Now you've lied to the police. Yes.
- 31:10Speaker 4: And then it gets very serious because the penalty for
- 31:13Speaker 4: perjury and for lying is very serious. When you realised
- 31:18Speaker 4: that they were able to prove that this alibi couldn't
- 31:22Speaker 4: be true, your heart must have sunk.
- 31:25Speaker 6: Oh, yeah, I had a real problem with that.
- 31:27Speaker 4: Did you believe it?
- 31:29Speaker 6: When they told me the facts, I had to. I
- 31:31Speaker 6: couldn't live in denial any longer.
- 31:33Speaker 4: The police wire you up and say, right, we want
- 31:40Speaker 4: you to recall Biscoe. How long were you acting as
- 31:44Speaker 4: an informant?
- 31:45Speaker 6: I believe three months.
- 31:46Speaker 4: Do you know how many scariest three months of your life?
- 31:49Speaker 3: Oh, yes.
- 31:52Speaker 5: We would.
- 31:53Speaker 8: give her a topic to bring up, just to see
- 31:57Speaker 8: what their reaction was.
- 31:59Speaker 2: I was sitting in a surveillance van, listening into the
- 32:03Speaker 2: live feed from the wire that Toby was wearing. And
- 32:08Speaker 2: I got to tell you, at times, I was on
- 32:10Speaker 2: pins and needles. You could hear him doing something to her,
- 32:17Speaker 2: and you could hear her say, you know, why are
- 32:20Speaker 2: you touching me like that? And we all kind of
- 32:22Speaker 2: looked at each other that He's feeling her for a
- 32:26Speaker 2: wire because he's suspicious. I remember thinking to myself, this
- 32:30Speaker 2: is insane.
- 32:33Speaker 6: You were served?
- 32:34Speaker 5: Yes.
- 32:34Speaker 4: What? A fascinating, gripping piece of footage of the friend
- 32:58Speaker 4: telling them both, the police know your phone was at
- 33:02Speaker 4: the crime scene.
- 33:04Speaker 6: Cell phone records indicated that she was in Canals County at.
- 33:07Speaker 4: The time of the killing. And you could see them
- 33:11Speaker 4: both falling apart, really. That was the one thing that
- 33:15Speaker 4: I hope wasn't true. Because they realize that the great
- 33:19Speaker 4: cover-up has been exposed.
- 33:27Speaker 8: That reaction was priceless because that was the one thing
- 33:30Speaker 8: they didn't want us to find out. And when they
- 33:32Speaker 8: knew that we knew where the phones were, that really
- 33:37Speaker 8: hit them both hard.
- 33:40Speaker 5: I mean, can they say that I was at the
- 33:42Speaker 5: scene like that? No.
- 33:44Speaker 4: If they put her at the scene, that's it. And
- 33:50Speaker 4: that was it. The police were now convinced the couple
- 33:54Speaker 4: were in it together. Was it a big relief when
- 33:58Speaker 4: they finally got arrested?
- 34:00Speaker 6: At that point, that was one of the best days
- 34:02Speaker 6: of my life.
- 34:03Speaker 4: Obviously, your feelings have changed about Tracy, but they've also,
- 34:07Speaker 4: I'd imagine, dramatically changed about Ashley.
- 34:10Speaker 6: Surprisingly, I still felt a love towards her.
- 34:23Speaker 4: When I went to see Ashley in prison, she said
- 34:26Speaker 4: to me, that the idea to kill the victim was hers.
- 34:35Speaker 4: Oh my God.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Right now, you're the only one arrested for the homicide.
- 34:44Speaker 1: You by your lonesome. And you know why?
- 34:47Speaker 8: Because that's exactly the way Tracy wanted it from the beginning.
- 34:53Speaker 16: That's why you were the one who looked Sandra's.
- 34:57Speaker 4: Information on the computer. The police charge you with first-degree murder,
- 35:02Speaker 4: but they charge Tracy with a lesser charge. You very
- 35:05Speaker 4: quickly turn on him, and your plan then is, look,
- 35:10Speaker 4: this guy, it's all down to him. He's the evil mastermind.
- 35:14Speaker 4: I'm this poor, innocent young woman caught up in his
- 35:18Speaker 4: evil plan.
- 35:19Speaker 5: This was three months after I was arrested. My attorney
- 35:23Speaker 5: started revealing to me that who he made himself out
- 35:30Speaker 5: to be was just a total facade.
- 35:38Speaker 11: He was a master manipulator, particularly of women, and an
- 35:42Speaker 11: abuser of women, of course. And she was a particularly
- 35:46Speaker 11: vulnerable young lady. When I showed her the information that
- 35:52Speaker 11: the state had given us and the discovery, and kind
- 35:55Speaker 11: of made her realize that she'd been played. And so
- 36:00Speaker 11: she was pretty determined on testifying against him and getting
- 36:05Speaker 11: what she could out of this ugly scene.
- 36:11Speaker 4: Ashley struck a deal with prosecutors. To avoid a life sentence,
- 36:17Speaker 4: she volunteered to testify against her husband about the murder.
- 36:22Speaker 11: Police say she killed a woman to keep her husband
- 36:24Speaker 11: out of jail, but now the husband is on trial
- 36:27Speaker 11: for murder.
- 36:28Speaker 4: 39-year-old Timothy Humphrey faces the death penalty.
- 36:31Speaker 11: Did you ask her to kill for you, or did
- 36:34Speaker 11: you let her kill for you?
- 36:36Speaker 4: Either one. Absolutely not. I had no idea that she
- 36:40Speaker 4: had that intention.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Please have a seat in the witness chair.
- 36:43Speaker 4: If you would watch your step.
- 36:44Speaker 1: You had discarded the items.
- 36:46Speaker 11: Yes.
- 36:47Speaker 4: Whose idea was it to discard the items?
- 36:49Speaker 5: It was his.
- 36:50Speaker 4: He told me to.
- 36:51Speaker 5: I loved him very much and I did not want
- 36:53Speaker 5: to lose him. So you were willing to kill another
- 36:55Speaker 5: human being because you loved him?
- 36:57Speaker 1: Yes.
- 36:58Speaker 5: It took the jurors less than three hours to find
- 37:01Speaker 5: him guilty of murder.
- 37:02Speaker 2: For masterminding the death of a former female friend who
- 37:05Speaker 2: had accused him of rape.
- 37:13Speaker 4: As a result of your plea deal with the police,
- 37:15Speaker 4: you've got 25 years, not life, and you'll be out
- 37:19Speaker 4: in 12 years. and you'll still be a relatively young woman.
- 37:22Speaker 4: But Tracy got life without parole and is never coming out.
- 37:26Speaker 4: And there will be people thinking, well, hang on a second.
- 37:31Speaker 4: Why is she getting out when the guy who didn't
- 37:35Speaker 4: have the idea and didn't pull the trigger is in
- 37:39Speaker 4: jail for the rest of his life?
- 37:43Speaker 5: Well, let me say that if I was doing life, I.
- 37:50Speaker 5: Would feel I deserved it. And that I feel very
- 37:55Speaker 5: fortunate not to be doing life. But I believe that
- 38:00Speaker 5: if he was to get out, he would continue to
- 38:03Speaker 5: be the same violent manipulator that he was when I
- 38:09Speaker 5: met him.
- 38:11Speaker 4: Right, but how do we know that you're not gonna
- 38:14Speaker 4: be the same killer?
- 38:20Speaker 5: That's harsh. There is no hatred or violence in me.
- 38:36Speaker 4: But you didn't hate Sandy.
- 38:39Speaker 5: You're right.
- 38:40Speaker 4: You didn't even know Sandy. You didn't hate her. You
- 38:42Speaker 4: had no emotion to her at all. You were just
- 38:44Speaker 4: a cold-blooded assassin of a woman you had never met.
- 38:50Speaker 4: Could it be, Ashley, that you just chucked him under
- 38:52Speaker 4: the bus to save your own skin?
- 38:57Speaker 5: Well... I certainly didn't save myself with a 25-year sentence.
- 39:02Speaker 5: I'm still spending a quarter of a century. And.
- 39:06Speaker 4: But you'll be out before you're 50. You could have
- 39:09Speaker 4: a chance to rebuild your life. And there will be
- 39:12Speaker 4: people listening to all this thinking, doesn't seem fair somehow.
- 39:22Speaker 4: What are your feelings towards Tracy now? Have you had
- 39:24Speaker 4: any contact with him in 13 years? Do you want
- 39:27Speaker 4: to have any contact with him again?
- 39:29Speaker 5: No. Every time I think of him, I feel like
- 39:34Speaker 5: I'm going to.
- 39:38Speaker 4: Be sick.
- 39:39Speaker 5: I am trying to divorce him still. and perhaps soon
- 39:45Speaker 5: I will have to confront him on a telephonic hearing,
- 39:50Speaker 5: and that just makes me shake thinking about it. I
- 39:53Speaker 5: don't want to hear his voice. It fills me with dread.
- 39:57Speaker 4: See, here's the thing, actually. Having listened to the whole story,
- 40:01Speaker 4: I suppose I can't decide here whether I believe you
- 40:07Speaker 4: or not because it's so hard to think that somebody
- 40:10Speaker 4: who's no fool could be so in the thrall of
- 40:14Speaker 4: this guy that she would commit cold-blooded murder, not just
- 40:19Speaker 4: on a spur of a moment, but planned for weeks.
- 40:22Speaker 4: And that takes you from being a criminal of passion
- 40:26Speaker 4: to a really evil person planning a very evil act
- 40:30Speaker 4: and carrying it out. Do you accept that?
- 40:36Speaker 5: I accept what I did was.
- 40:39Speaker 4: Evil.
- 40:57Speaker 8: I did not like the deal one bit. I mean,
- 40:59Speaker 8: she's the one that went ahead and pumped eight bullets
- 41:02Speaker 8: into this lady.
- 41:03Speaker 4: She admitted to me she first had the idea to
- 41:07Speaker 4: commit murder.
- 41:09Speaker 8: If I had my wish, she'd spend the rest of
- 41:11Speaker 8: her life in prison.
- 41:16Speaker 4: You had no emotion towards Sandy when you murdered her.
- 41:21Speaker 4: What are your feelings about her now, 13 years on?
- 41:26Speaker 5: I think about her daughter a lot. I took her
- 41:32Speaker 5: mother away from her.
- 41:38Speaker 2: I'm sure Sandy's family probably want to see her fry.
- 41:44Speaker 2: So am I satisfied with the sentence? 25 years is
- 41:48Speaker 2: a long time. It's a very long time.
- 41:53Speaker 4: If Sandy's daughter is watching this program, What would you
- 41:57Speaker 4: say to her?
- 41:58Speaker 5: There's nothing I can say that will make it better.
- 42:03Speaker 5: But I'm so sorry you don't know your mother. And
- 42:10Speaker 5: that it is because of me.
- 42:19Speaker 4: She showed remorse.
- 42:20Speaker 10: She never said, I didn't do it.
- 42:23Speaker 6: Right?
- 42:25Speaker 10: That's very rare.
- 42:26Speaker 4: When you have a.
- 42:26Speaker 10: Person admitting to a crime like this.
- 42:28Speaker 4: That's very rare.
- 42:30Speaker 10: Most murderers, I didn't do it.
- 42:32Speaker 5: Every July, I get really messed up psychologically.
- 42:40Speaker 4: On the anniversary of what happened.
- 42:44Speaker 5: Whether I think about it or not, sometimes I'm like,
- 42:47Speaker 5: what is wrong with me? Why am I so messed up?
- 42:50Speaker 5: And then it occurs to me, I'm like, oh, it's July.
- 42:57Speaker 13: I certainly could relate to her in being in love,
- 43:02Speaker 13: wanting to believe the things that the person that you
- 43:05Speaker 13: love is telling you. But obviously killing another human being
- 43:10Speaker 13: and taking a life is not a line you should
- 43:12Speaker 13: be crossing. Thank you.
- 43:20Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 43:28Speaker 4: Thank you.
