- 0:41Hello and welcome to Cancer Conversations On Talking Facts.
- 0:45This is your host,
- 0:46Doctor Jennifer Hunter,
- 0:47assistant Director for Family Consumer Sciences Extension at the University of Kentucky.
- 0:53Today I am pleased to be joined by Carrie Seider and Dindi Yokel that are mind body movement coordinators for integrative medicine and health with the University of Kentucky Health Care.
- 1:06Welcome,
- 1:06Carrie and Dindi.
- 1:08Thank you.
- 1:09Thank you.
- 1:11So today's topic is focused on yoga for stress relief and relaxation.
- 1:18And so I wanted to start by asking how does the practice of yoga provide relief from stress and really inspire relaxation?
- 1:27Great.
- 1:28So yoga is a Sanskrit word that means to unify.
- 1:33And what we are unifying is the breath movement and the mind.
- 1:40And by bringing that all back into harmony,
- 1:44the body then slows down naturally,
- 1:47the breath slows down.
- 1:50The Oxytocin slows down production.
- 1:54And so it puts the body and the nervous system into a state of rest and digest.
- 2:01Great.
- 2:01So Terry,
- 2:02let me ask you that.
- 2:04I know often when I see yoga classes advertised that they'll be listed for different levels.
- 2:10So beginner,
- 2:11intermediate and advanced,
- 2:13could you talk a little bit about,
- 2:16about what it means to be at each of those levels?
- 2:20Yes,
- 2:20actually anybody can join any class.
- 2:24You don't have to be in any particular stage and you just have to be willing to be involved and participate the flexibility.
- 2:34A lot of people feel like they have to do all the crazy pretzel type moves and that's not true.
- 2:40It's as much about your mind being flexible as your body.
- 2:45So really,
- 2:47I wouldn't say that in,
- 2:49in my view anyway,
- 2:51that one specific group is one specific class because you can always do modifications and and help them along if there's an area where they're maybe struggling a little bit.
- 3:03Excellent.
- 3:04So,
- 3:04and this is a question for either or both of you.
- 3:07But um when I think about yoga,
- 3:10I think about flexibility and the,
- 3:13you know,
- 3:14in my mind,
- 3:15at least the importance of flexibility to truly be able to practice yoga effectively.
- 3:22Is that a myth or is there any reality to that?
- 3:27I feel like that's more,
- 3:29yeah,
- 3:29it's more of an excuse than anything.
- 3:32Definitely.
- 3:33Because like I said before,
- 3:34the,
- 3:35the minds,
- 3:36the mind and body movement together,
- 3:39the flexibility,
- 3:40you have to be flexible in your mind and in your body as well.
- 3:44The hardest thing at the end of my class for most people is the just laying there,
- 3:51you know,
- 3:51in that final pose and being,
- 3:53still being quiet and trying to erase everything out of their mind.
- 3:57That's the hardest thing out of everything.
- 4:00Even if you're doing some crazy pose,
- 4:02that's the most difficult thing for people because they just can't,
- 4:06once they're laying there,
- 4:08it's like,
- 4:08oh,
- 4:08I've got dinner to cook.
- 4:10I better run the store.
- 4:12It's really hard to let all that go.
- 4:14So it's a lot about your mind for sure.
- 4:18And I think what's interesting is that the more you practice,
- 4:22the more flexible you become Carrie and I share a student and when she first came to us,
- 4:30she had never practiced yoga and she was very physically rigid.
- 4:36But now,
- 4:37I don't know if you've noticed last week before she went on holiday when she's first started,
- 4:43her knees would be almost like up in the air when she,
- 4:48and now she has been able to relax so much.
- 4:52And it's really more about the relaxation that her knees are almost all the way down to the mat.
- 4:59So it's by coming a couple of times a week religiously,
- 5:05almost that the flexibility does come and breath work is very important in that too.
- 5:12A lot of people,
- 5:13if they find themselves kind of stuck,
- 5:16they wanna hold their breath and try to push through it and you can't do that.
- 5:19You know,
- 5:20it's,
- 5:20you have to put all that together.
- 5:22Like you said,
- 5:22the unity,
- 5:23it all goes together.
- 5:24So obviously,
- 5:26we always recommend before anyone starts any type of new physical activity or program that they certainly check with their,
- 5:34their physician.
- 5:35But,
- 5:36um,
- 5:36just in general,
- 5:37are there basic physical,
- 5:40um,
- 5:40requirements for an individual to be able to practice yoga?
- 5:45I think it's a willingness because we have some,
- 5:50uh,
- 5:51students who have maybe COPD or asthma.
- 5:57And so it's just being able to help them find the breath.
- 6:01So it's not really a limitation.
- 6:04And,
- 6:05you know,
- 6:06I have people come in wheelchairs.
- 6:08It's really,
- 6:09it's the willingness in the mind to participate.
- 6:13It is nice to know in advance though.
- 6:15I had a gentleman come that had had surgery,
- 6:18he was released to come.
- 6:20He didn't tell me that in the beginning.
- 6:22So I like to know in advance if somebody is working with some specific physical thing,
- 6:29so I can keep an eye on them and maybe,
- 6:31you know,
- 6:32help them modify some things and not concentrate in areas maybe where they,
- 6:36if they had back surgery,
- 6:37things like that.
- 6:38I think that's important to know the students,
- 6:41you know,
- 6:41they have to open up to you though.
- 6:42He told me at the end and,
- 6:45like,
- 6:45I would like to have known that in the beginning.
- 6:47It's certainly been helpful,
- 6:49certainly been helpful.
- 6:50Um,
- 6:50I do want to shift gears a little bit from talking about yoga in general to a little bit about your specific program that you offer through integrative medicine and,
- 7:01and help.
- 7:02Um,
- 7:02can you tell me about the classes that y'all offer and,
- 7:07um,
- 7:07just when they're offered and where they are?
- 7:10Sure,
- 7:11um,
- 7:11I'll,
- 7:11I'll speak about mine.
- 7:13Um,
- 7:13I do Tuesday evenings,
- 7:15515 to 615,
- 7:17I do Thursdays 12 to 1 for lunch at lunchtime class.
- 7:21And then I also have Thursday evening,
- 7:23515 to 615.
- 7:25All the classes take place in the Whitney Hendrickson building on the third floor in integrative medicine and health.
- 7:35We have a studio there and all the supplies you just need to show up.
- 7:40No need to sign up.
- 7:42Um,
- 7:43I teach Tuesday mornings at nine and Wednesdays at 515 and there's also a Zoom class on Wednesday,
- 7:54um,
- 7:54given by Melissa Condor.
- 7:57And,
- 7:58um,
- 7:58we can make the Zoom link available.
- 8:03But these classes are open to anyone who works at UK,
- 8:07the community patients with clearance.
- 8:12And so is there a cost associated with the course?
- 8:18And is there any type of?
- 8:21No,
- 8:22no,
- 8:22just show up.
- 8:24Oh,
- 8:24so that,
- 8:25that,
- 8:25that's great.
- 8:26I mean,
- 8:26that really reduces,
- 8:27I think barriers to participation because I know sometimes I think,
- 8:31well,
- 8:31I meant to sign up and I didn't or I,
- 8:33you know,
- 8:34so it's,
- 8:35it's wonderful when you can just find an open spot on your calendar and,
- 8:39and commit to,
- 8:41um,
- 8:41commit to a and so dandy,
- 8:43you mentioned a little bit about that.
- 8:45You do not need to,
- 8:46to bring anything with you.
- 8:48So there's no need to bring your own yoga mat,
- 8:50blanket blocks bolsters that you would have all,
- 8:54all props available.
- 8:56We have all props available.
- 8:57Some people like to bring their own and even some people who may not have time to change,
- 9:04participate in whatever they've been wearing for the day,
- 9:08which is fine,
- 9:09you know,
- 9:10as long as,
- 9:11as they're comfortable.
- 9:13Yeah,
- 9:13we couldn't make it any easier unless we picked you up and brought you with us.
- 9:18Well,
- 9:18I guess that's a question.
- 9:19Is there parking available?
- 9:22Well,
- 9:23yes,
- 9:24for the class after 430 that you can park in the lot behind the Whitney Hendrickson building because the guard goes home and services are over for the day.
- 9:39Excellent,
- 9:40good information to know before we wrap up today.
- 9:42I do wanna ask you a little bit more about integrative medicine and health.
- 9:48The unit that you all are in at UK,
- 9:51that I do know that they have quite a wide variety of,
- 9:54of offerings could you,
- 9:56um,
- 9:56briefly share about some of the other programs available through integrative medicine and health.
- 10:02Yeah,
- 10:02there's an excellent massage therapy program and,
- 10:07um,
- 10:07I'm not sure how many times per month,
- 10:09but they are offering chair massage therapy for free to everyone who works at UK.
- 10:17Um,
- 10:18that would be a question for the front desk and integrative medicine and health.
- 10:23And that's just,
- 10:24uh,
- 10:24come on in and have your beautiful 10 minutes.
- 10:28There's acupuncture.
- 10:29I think we have three or four uh acupuncturist.
- 10:33Now there's art therapy,
- 10:35music therapy.
- 10:37So we have quite a variety.
- 10:39I think we even now have a Reiki practitioner.
- 10:42Oh,
- 10:42wow.
- 10:43So I will say that the chair massage is one of my favorites that when I see that they're gonna be in our building or closed,
- 10:49but you do have to jump on those appointments quickly cause they,
- 10:54they are in high demand.
- 10:55I will share for listeners that the phone number um to integrative medicine and health is 859 3234325.
- 11:06However,
- 11:07in our show notes,
- 11:08we will provide uh a link that has the phone number as well as a link to the Zoom option for the yoga classes in addition to a few other websites that y'all have provided to us,
- 11:22but that specific highlights the department of integrative medicine and,
- 11:28and health so that everyone can learn more about the unit and offerings,
- 11:32Terry and Diddy.
- 11:33Thank you.
- 11:33So much for joining us today and sharing with our listeners about the power of the practice of yoga and,
- 11:40and specifically using it for stress relief and relaxation.
- 11:45Thank you.
- 11:47Have a great day.
