- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello, Welcome back to Inside the Tape with Greg Cosell
- 0:12Speaker 1: On Inside the Birds. I'm Jeff Mosher. We got Greg Cosell.
- 0:15Speaker 1: He's breaking down the tape of the Eagles last game.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Of course, that's a lost twenty two nineteen to the Chargers.
- 0:22Speaker 1: In part one, we did the Eagles offense. Part two
- 0:25Speaker 1: Eagles defense. Will go through it now, and Greg, I
- 0:27Speaker 1: know a lot of people were very concerned about how
- 0:30Speaker 1: this Eagles defense was going to hold up against the
- 0:32Speaker 1: Chargers run game, given the fact that the Eagles defense
- 0:35Speaker 1: got steamrolled the week before by the Chicago Bears. One
- 0:39Speaker 1: week later, ten days later, actually a far different result.
- 0:43Speaker 1: What jumped out to you about the Eagles defense on tape?
- 0:46Speaker 2: You know, I thought a lot of guys played well
- 0:49Speaker 2: on the Eagles defense. I mean that I really noticed.
- 0:52Speaker 2: I thought that Jordan Davis played extremely well. Boy. I
- 0:55Speaker 2: thought he looked really quick in this game, both laterally,
- 0:58Speaker 2: and he had some vertical expl as a pass rusher.
- 1:01Speaker 2: I thought Byron Young had some, you know, really good
- 1:04Speaker 2: plays where you noticed him and went, oh, that's that's
- 1:06Speaker 2: really good. You know. Nikobe Dean, I mean, what can
- 1:13Speaker 2: you say about those those blitzes? I mean, he just
- 1:15Speaker 2: blows people up. So yeah, obviously had the sack fumble,
- 1:19Speaker 2: then he had another one where Herbert was able to
- 1:21Speaker 2: escape and run for fifteen yards. But you know, Dean
- 1:24Speaker 2: is so good and all these are sim pressures. I mean,
- 1:27Speaker 2: vic Fango in this game only had five plays out
- 1:30Speaker 2: of over forty dropbacks where he rushed five. So he's
- 1:34Speaker 2: been very big on sim pressure's meaning if people have
- 1:37Speaker 2: not to listen to us, it's a four man pass
- 1:39Speaker 2: rush where the fourth rusher is most often a linebacker
- 1:44Speaker 2: and it's usually Dean. Every once in a while it's Bond. Now,
- 1:47Speaker 2: he did have a five man pressure in this game
- 1:49Speaker 2: where I remember Degene was was the fifth rusher coming
- 1:52Speaker 2: off the edge, but he doesn't. He doesn't usually use
- 1:55Speaker 2: Degene as a blitzer even though he's a slot player
- 1:58Speaker 2: and he's not a big five man run And they
- 2:01Speaker 2: look they were getting people around Herbert a lot of
- 2:03Speaker 2: They had seven sacks, with the exception really of dean sack.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Most of them were kind of secondary sacks, which they
- 2:10Speaker 2: still count, but they didn't happen within you know, two
- 2:12Speaker 2: point five seconds.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Well, no, I thought that that meant that there was
- 2:16Speaker 1: there were coverage Sacks. I thought, I ask you about it.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I thought the back end of an excellent job on McCoffy,
- 2:22Speaker 1: on Latin Conky, on on Keenan Allen. I mean this
- 2:26Speaker 1: we mentioned in the pregame show. This is the only
- 2:28Speaker 1: team in the NFL that has four receivers with five hundred, yeah,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and they're all invisible for the most yeah.
- 2:34Speaker 2: For the most part. And I thought, you know, Marcus EPs,
- 2:36Speaker 2: I thought played well. I thought he was assignment officient.
- 2:39Speaker 2: You know, look, Marcus EPs, even when he was here
- 2:42Speaker 2: before and when he started in the league, he's not
- 2:45Speaker 2: an impact playmaker. He's one of those efficient guys. That's
- 2:48Speaker 2: how he's been in the league. He's an assignment guy.
- 2:50Speaker 2: And I thought he played well. You know what, the
- 2:52Speaker 2: way they play on the back end is when they
- 2:55Speaker 2: when they're in a too high structure, Blankenship is ninety
- 2:58Speaker 2: nine point nine percent of the time the boundary safety,
- 3:01Speaker 2: and Epps is was the field safety, just like Mkooba
- 3:05Speaker 2: is the field safety. That's the way they play. You know,
- 3:07Speaker 2: blanken Chip plays to the boundary, to the side of
- 3:09Speaker 2: Quinon Mitchell, who's always the boundary corner. Now, so you know,
- 3:13Speaker 2: I thought Epps did his job. I thought, you know,
- 3:15Speaker 2: there are just really snapshot plays that were really good.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Epps had a couple where you saw the the range
- 3:21Speaker 2: and you wouldn't call him an explosive athlete, but he
- 3:24Speaker 2: showed some range. Bond had some plays. You know, he's
- 3:26Speaker 2: a range Bond's a rangy guy. That's his game. And
- 3:29Speaker 2: he had plays, you know, sidelines to sideline showing that
- 3:32Speaker 2: inside outside range. You know, it's a lot of guys
- 3:35Speaker 2: flashed in this game.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Yeah, certainly, let's talk about the defensive front. I mean,
- 3:39Speaker 1: no Jaalen Carter. So you saw a lot more Byron Young,
- 3:43Speaker 1: and it appeared that they used Brandon Graham as any.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Yeah, more often than not he played thirty snaps. I
- 3:50Speaker 2: didn't chart the exact number he was inside, but I
- 3:53Speaker 2: would say, you know, at least half. You know, you're right,
- 3:57Speaker 2: he was an inside rusher more often than not. Look,
- 4:01Speaker 2: you know, he was one guy didn't certainly notice. But
- 4:04Speaker 2: that doesn't mean he looked bad. I mean he didn't
- 4:05Speaker 2: make a splash play, right.
- 4:07Speaker 1: You know, do you feel like the Eagles used a
- 4:09Speaker 1: lot more stunting in line games?
- 4:12Speaker 2: He slanted a lot. Okay, he slanted a lot, and
- 4:16Speaker 2: I think my sense was the reason they did that
- 4:19Speaker 2: is this is an offensive line for the Chargers that's
- 4:22Speaker 2: not particularly quicker athletic, and I think that was again
- 4:26Speaker 2: you know, Vic Fangio could tell you more, but that's
- 4:28Speaker 2: my sense, you know, because that's not a real good
- 4:30Speaker 2: old line. And then Pipkins got hurt after twenty snaps
- 4:33Speaker 2: and they had to play Bobby Hart at right tackle,
- 4:35Speaker 2: and that's when Phillips capt speed to power against heart
- 4:39Speaker 2: and he was responsible for the Jackson interception because he
- 4:42Speaker 2: you know, he hit the upper arm of Herbert and
- 4:44Speaker 2: the ball fluttered out. But yeah, I think they were looking,
- 4:48Speaker 2: you know, with this old line is just not a
- 4:50Speaker 2: very good group and certainly not an athletic group. No.
- 4:53Speaker 1: In fact, I gained a lot more respect for Justin Herbert.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I mean, he really willed them to a win with
- 4:58Speaker 1: a broken left hand way. That was very impressed with.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Can you explain for our listeners and our viewers what
- 5:05Speaker 1: slanting is and why a team would do it? So?
- 5:09Speaker 2: In other words, normally an offensive line, excuse me, defensive line,
- 5:13Speaker 2: they line up and their first move is vertical. You know,
- 5:16Speaker 2: whether you're shooting a gap or whether you're starting off
- 5:19Speaker 2: by by initiating contact and then trying to play off
- 5:22Speaker 2: the contact. So what they're doing here instead is their
- 5:25Speaker 2: first move is not purely lateral, but it's a little
- 5:29Speaker 2: bit lateral. So you're you're sort of it's a slant.
- 5:33Speaker 2: You're slanting into, you know, a gap, and now that
- 5:36Speaker 2: forces the offensive lineman that's right in front of you,
- 5:39Speaker 2: he's got to move with you, you know, and if you're
- 5:42Speaker 2: if the old linemen are not quick or athletic, that's
- 5:45Speaker 2: it makes it tougher for them. And they struggled with that,
- 5:48Speaker 2: and it was you know, I thought it was a
- 5:50Speaker 2: good tactical move by the Eagles.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and you saw a lot of penetration. You saw
- 5:54Speaker 1: a lot of pressure right at Herbert. Immediately we talked
- 5:58Speaker 1: about the linebackers, the safety these corners. Yeah, I mean
- 6:02Speaker 1: Jaylen Phillips like he had looked he had a pretty
- 6:05Speaker 1: active game as well.
- 6:06Speaker 2: He was very active, you know, he was good in
- 6:08Speaker 2: the run game. He had some pressures. No, it was
- 6:13Speaker 2: like I said, I mean, you know, I'm not charting
- 6:14Speaker 2: every player obviously, you know I can't, but I didn't
- 6:17Speaker 2: feel like anybody had bad you know, had bad snaps.
- 6:20Speaker 2: We went oh, my god, that's really bad, right, And
- 6:23Speaker 2: it was good. You know, they lost obviously, but I
- 6:25Speaker 2: thought it was a really good defensive effort.
- 6:27Speaker 1: For all the discussion from the first eight to ten
- 6:30Speaker 1: weeks about Dori Jackson, again, it's been hard for teams
- 6:34Speaker 1: to really pick on him. Some teams have tried, but
- 6:36Speaker 1: for the most part, he hasn't hurt them as much.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, they had the one big play on
- 6:41Speaker 2: the first posession of sixty yarder. How about Zach Bourn
- 6:44Speaker 2: running him down by the way. That's ridiculous, but you know,
- 6:49Speaker 2: theoretically that's a bust. But again, they ran a route
- 6:52Speaker 2: concept that was basically a four strong to one side,
- 6:55Speaker 2: and because Herbert had to move and the play became
- 6:58Speaker 2: second reaction, theoretically, could you argue that it was Nikobe
- 7:02Speaker 2: Dean who who should have been there? But you know
- 7:05Speaker 2: those are hard because the play goes all to one
- 7:07Speaker 2: side and you don't want to stand there covering grass,
- 7:10Speaker 2: so you start to move with the play and then
- 7:13Speaker 2: you know that happens, and you know it's happened. But
- 7:17Speaker 2: when I saw Bone run him down that way, that
- 7:19Speaker 2: was crazy.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I was. I mean, the athleticism the linebacker they
- 7:22Speaker 1: did get you hot Campbell on the field for seven snaps.
- 7:24Speaker 1: But Vic's just having a trump and you can we'll see,
- 7:27Speaker 1: we've already talked about it, and we'll see in a
- 7:29Speaker 1: few seconds why he's having trouble taking Nakobe off the
- 7:33Speaker 1: field or Zach Ball off the field.
- 7:35Speaker 2: And you're not going to right now the way Nikobe
- 7:38Speaker 2: Dean's playing or Zach I mean, you're not taking those
- 7:41Speaker 2: guys off the field.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Not at all. So before we get to to watch it,
- 7:46Speaker 1: I'm I guess I'm baffled a little bit because sometimes
- 7:49Speaker 1: the Eagles put things on tape that you expect the
- 7:51Speaker 1: opponent to eventually figure out because they do it so much.
- 7:54Speaker 1: And it seems like every time Nikobe Dean comes on
- 7:58Speaker 1: a SIM or he comes on a creeper pressure as
- 8:01Speaker 1: a fifth man, like he's getting through and a lot
- 8:04Speaker 1: of times unblocked. And it's almost like that's.
- 8:06Speaker 2: A function of what the front alignment is. They align
- 8:11Speaker 2: their front so that basically the center and whichever A
- 8:17Speaker 2: gap they want him to go to, there's obviously two
- 8:19Speaker 2: A gaps on the each side of the center, So
- 8:21Speaker 2: withever a gap they designate for that particular SIM pressure
- 8:25Speaker 2: they want him to go through. They make sure that
- 8:27Speaker 2: with their front alignment that the center has to block
- 8:31Speaker 2: a defensive tackle right and that the center can't respond
- 8:35Speaker 2: to Nakobe Dean because when they do this with him,
- 8:39Speaker 2: he routinely gets through that a gap clean and that's
- 8:42Speaker 2: a function of how they align their front.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Hey, it's Jeff Mosher, And if you have a family

- 11:33Speaker 1: at it. How he was impactful here? This is earlier
- 11:37Speaker 1: in the game. And no, this is where he comes
- 11:41Speaker 1: on a five man rush. It's it's not a sim
- 11:45Speaker 1: and I believe he causes an incomplete pass.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Here as we So this is a man yeah, yes.
- 11:53Speaker 1: So let's let's reroll back and roll up what they're
- 11:56Speaker 1: doing here, because they're really just showing a fore man
- 11:58Speaker 1: in front of first.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yeah, now, this this is interesting. This. When I saw
- 12:03Speaker 2: this again, I thought this could have been a mistake
- 12:05Speaker 2: because look at the front of it. It's your basic,
- 12:09Speaker 2: you know, conventional four man front. So you know, when
- 12:14Speaker 2: I saw this again because I don't know the protection call,
- 12:17Speaker 2: but you know, I was trying to figure out, like,
- 12:19Speaker 2: what is the center looking at here? Right? You know,
- 12:22Speaker 2: I thought, you know, so I don't know the answer
- 12:24Speaker 2: to that. You know, maybe it's a mistake, maybe it's
- 12:27Speaker 2: you know, I don't know. Now he's sliding immediately to
- 12:29Speaker 2: his left. If that's the call, I guess I'd be
- 12:35Speaker 2: surprised if that's the call, because they are an empty
- 12:37Speaker 2: they don't have a back to pick up Dean. So,
- 12:40Speaker 2: you know, and Dean, you know, do you remember when
- 12:44Speaker 2: we used to do the show with Trey Thomas and
- 12:47Speaker 2: he would always use the term non blitzer. Yes, I
- 12:50Speaker 2: mean I would think, if you're a defense that Dean
- 12:53Speaker 2: is a non blitzer. Yes.
- 12:55Speaker 1: The only thing I would say, is that on the
- 12:56Speaker 1: left side of the left side is all.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Have one position too. They very possible they see Bond
- 13:03Speaker 2: as a potential blitzer and they're going to go three
- 13:06Speaker 2: to block three, But then then you have two to
- 13:08Speaker 2: block two on the right, big on big, So you know,
- 13:13Speaker 2: I would doubt, I would doubt very much that the
- 13:17Speaker 2: protection call would allow for someone to come clean through
- 13:20Speaker 2: the A gap. So I would think somewhere along the line,
- 13:24Speaker 2: there's a mistake made.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Plus, it doesn't look like the routes are are are designed.
- 13:29Speaker 2: If there's nobody's running a hot route, there's no one.
- 13:32Speaker 2: I remember this play, nobody somebody made a mistake here.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Yes, I had to be because you would have thought
- 13:40Speaker 1: someone like right here one of the receivers turns around
- 13:43Speaker 1: and prevents himself. But no, that's that's not the case,
- 13:46Speaker 1: and it winds up being an easy sack there for
- 13:49Speaker 1: for Nikobe Dean. But again untouched. But we've seen a
- 13:51Speaker 1: couple We've seen that happen a couple of times this year.
- 13:54Speaker 1: So let's also let's look at the Nicobe Dean play
- 13:57Speaker 1: where he does cause uh the fumble and diagnose that
- 14:01Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 14:02Speaker 2: So this was a sim pressure. They've got a blocker
- 14:05Speaker 2: for him here, so they're gonna rush for four yep. So
- 14:10Speaker 2: I mean he's gonna hit the a gap. The back
- 14:12Speaker 2: is Hampton. You know, Hampton goes to meet him, but
- 14:15Speaker 2: he can't really Hampton can't get set because it happened
- 14:18Speaker 2: so fast, so he ends up blowing him up. But
- 14:20Speaker 2: you know, Hampton could not set his feet with any
- 14:22Speaker 2: kind of firm base. And Dean just you know, he's
- 14:25Speaker 2: so good with this velocity. You know, the velocity, the
- 14:28Speaker 2: shortstroke power. I mean that seems like he does this
- 14:32Speaker 2: every week.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Yeah, now you can add.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Here's a class example what I was talking about with
- 14:37Speaker 2: the front, Okay, because look at the front, they've got
- 14:40Speaker 2: a one technique with Davis, and the center's got his
- 14:42Speaker 2: eye on him. He can't ignore Davis, right, And then
- 14:46Speaker 2: you got a three technique and you got a wide nine.
- 14:49Speaker 2: So now the left tackle's eating up by Hunt. When
- 14:51Speaker 2: I say up, that's how they map out the protection.
- 14:54Speaker 2: So if you're mapping out this protection which you have
- 14:57Speaker 2: right now, is you're gonna have the left tackle on Hunt,
- 15:00Speaker 2: You're gonna have the left guard on Young, You're gonna
- 15:02Speaker 2: have the center on Davis and then on the other side,
- 15:07Speaker 2: you know, one of them may have bone if he comes,
- 15:11Speaker 2: you know. So basically they're saying that the back is
- 15:15Speaker 2: going to have the a gap. That's what they're staying.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Here, right, and at the last second Dean gets in there.
- 15:25Speaker 1: By the way, you can now add O'maron Hampton to
- 15:28Speaker 1: the list of David Montgomery and Josh Jacobs of guys
- 15:31Speaker 1: that get trucked by Nicole Dean on the way to
- 15:33Speaker 1: a sack, which is a testament Nikobe Dean is smaller
- 15:37Speaker 1: than Omari and Hampton, so that's a testament to how House.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Well, but he's smaller in terms of well, no, he's
- 15:43Speaker 2: he's bigger in waight too. Yeah, Hampton is only like five.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Nine right right. I was thinking, wait, isn't isn't Hampton
- 15:50Speaker 1: a bigger to twenty one? Yeah, so he's a bigger guy.
- 15:54Speaker 1: But look, okay, yeah maybe right around the saye.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Not much more, but he is. Yeah, but you know,
- 16:01Speaker 2: Hampton couldn't get set. I mean, it's just couldn't get
- 16:03Speaker 2: set right.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Well whenever, Yeah, that's what they do.
- 16:08Speaker 2: They map out their front so that a back has
- 16:11Speaker 2: to pick up Dean. Now, when I say has to
- 16:14Speaker 2: Could you block this differently? It'd be hard to because
- 16:17Speaker 2: that means if you want the center to pick up
- 16:21Speaker 2: Dean here, then you're basically saying that you're left. Your
- 16:25Speaker 2: right guard has to block Davis and and he just
- 16:28Speaker 2: doesn't have leverage to do.
- 16:29Speaker 1: That, right, right. The last one I wanted to show
- 16:33Speaker 1: was an incomplete Uh this was a really good coverage
- 16:37Speaker 1: here downfield by Cooper de jan I believe this article. Yeah, yeah,
- 16:44Speaker 1: I think so this was Was this a double stunt?
- 16:47Speaker 1: Let's go back to the It looks like it was
- 16:50Speaker 1: two te stunts if I'm not mistaken here, because Brandon
- 16:54Speaker 1: Graham's lined up inside and then Hunt stunts around him,
- 16:57Speaker 1: and then the.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Solid thing it's a T East stunt up top. So yeah,
- 17:02Speaker 2: it's a double T stunt. Yeah. Yeah.
- 17:05Speaker 1: And then you look at that.
- 17:08Speaker 2: And they get and the center goes obviously to the left,
- 17:12Speaker 2: so Phillips gets in clean.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Yeah yep, and then Herbert has to make a throw
- 17:17Speaker 1: on the run. This is great concentrate. That was a
- 17:19Speaker 1: good ball tracking concentration.
- 17:20Speaker 2: It's a great play.
- 17:22Speaker 1: By Cooper de Gene. Yeah, I want to take a
- 17:24Speaker 1: look at that upfront because it's I don't. The Eagles
- 17:26Speaker 1: have been stunting, but it's rare you see them do
- 17:28Speaker 1: it with all four linemen.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Of it's pretty cool.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Yeah. And then there's Jalen Phillips. He's he moves fast
- 17:36Speaker 1: laterally Greg in.
- 17:37Speaker 2: An ideal world and again, I don't know how they
- 17:39Speaker 2: coach it, go back if you don't mind, sure, in
- 17:42Speaker 2: an ideal world. And then maybe you know I'm wrong,
- 17:46Speaker 2: but I've seen this before. You would want Campbell to
- 17:49Speaker 2: come up a little more, just so you can occupy
- 17:53Speaker 2: the center. Yep, that's what you'd love to see because
- 17:56Speaker 2: look at the center when the ball snap will look
- 17:58Speaker 2: right at Campbell because you know he doesn't know what
- 18:01Speaker 2: Campbell's going to do right now it could come and
- 18:03Speaker 2: that it would be on the center. So you know,
- 18:07Speaker 2: you'd want him just to be a little I think,
- 18:09Speaker 2: you know, Vick might, you know, teach it differently. They
- 18:13Speaker 2: might teach it differently, but you know, I've seen this
- 18:15Speaker 2: in the league with a lot of teams, because what
- 18:17Speaker 2: you're trying to do with stunts obviously is not have
- 18:20Speaker 2: anybody be able to help. Now, because it's a double stunt,
- 18:22Speaker 2: the center helps on the left side of the offense.
- 18:25Speaker 2: And he's in position to block Hunt as the looper
- 18:28Speaker 2: on that side, and therefore there's no one in a
- 18:30Speaker 2: position to block Phillips as a looper on the other side.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Yep, by the way, it's Makai Becton, who's not really
- 18:35Speaker 1: who's getting beat there at right guard I believe by
- 18:38Speaker 1: Joe and Phillips.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Well, it's tough. I mean, you know again this is
- 18:43Speaker 2: these stunts are hard, and there's rules that teams have,
- 18:47Speaker 2: you know, for how to deal with it, but those
- 18:50Speaker 2: things happen at breakneck speed.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Hey, one thing that always scares me is the latest

- 21:15Speaker 1: That's a great point. That is a look at the
- 21:18Speaker 1: Eagles defense. A much better effort against the Chargers. Unfortunately
- 21:22Speaker 1: for the team, it did not result in a win,
- 21:24Speaker 1: but it is a nice bounce back for the Eagles defense.
