- 0:00Amusement parks are meant to be the bastions of joy and wonder,
- 0:05where families can escape the stresses of everyday life and
- 0:10immerse themselves in a world of thrills and laughter.
- 0:15However, there's a haunting undercurrent that lurks beneath
- 0:19the surface of these seemingly innocent playgrounds.
- 0:24Abandoned amusement parks, in particular, possess a palpable
- 0:29sense of unease that permeates the crumbling structures and
- 0:34overgrown landscapes. The Shawnee Amusement Park in
- 0:38West Virginia stands as a testament to this unsettling
- 0:42phenomena. Once a bustling hub of
- 0:45entertainment, this forgotten sight now exudes an eerie and
- 0:50foreboding atmosphere. It's dilapidated rides and
- 0:54decaying buildings serve as a stark contrast to the joyful
- 0:59memories they once held. The park's troubled past, marked
- 1:04by tragedies and misfortunes, has imbued it with a sinister
- 1:09energy that seems to linger like a specter among the shadows of
- 1:15its abandoned grounds. Whispers of the scariest
- 1:19amusement park in the world and tales of its haunted nature have
- 1:23only added to the allure and trepidation surrounding this
- 1:27forgotten place. The juxtaposition of the once
- 1:31vibrant and smiling faces of the past in the current state of
- 1:35neglect and decay evokes a weird feeling, as if the very essence
- 1:41of the park's former life has been consumed by the darkness
- 1:45that now shrouds it. This unsettling blend of the
- 1:49past and the present, the light and the dark, creates a deeply
- 1:54unsettling and captivating experience that continues to
- 1:58draw in those who dare to venture into its forgotten
- 2:02corners. The Lake Shawnee Amusement Park
- 2:07harbors a dark history. Nestled in Mercer County, just a
- 2:11few miles from Princeton, this once vibrant hub of
- 2:14entertainment now sits abandoned, awaiting for the next
- 2:18round of guests to brave to enter the haunted structures
- 2:21within. The land where the park was
- 2:24built has long since been a burial ground for the Shawnee
- 2:27tribe, with archaeologists estimating that the site may
- 2:31hold remains of as many as 3000 people.
- 2:35This profound connection to the past would prove to be a
- 2:38harbinger of the park's troubled future.
- 2:41In 1775, a family of white settlers known as the Clays,
- 2:47consisting of the father, Mitchell Clay, his wife Phoebe
- 2:51Belcher Clay, and their three children, Bartley, Tabatha, and
- 2:56Ezekiel, moved into the remote area and established a homestead
- 3:01directly over the Shawnee Burial Ground.
- 3:04This act, which disregarded the sacred nature of the land, was
- 3:08set in motion a series of events that would ultimately lead to
- 3:12the park's downfall. The Clay's arrival and their
- 3:16disrespect for the Shawnee's ancestral resting place, did not
- 3:20go unnoticed by the local tribe. Tensions escalated, and the
- 3:26Clay's soon found themselves embroiled in a violent conflict
- 3:29with the Shawnee, a clash that would leave its indelible mark
- 3:34on the land. The echoes of this tragic
- 3:37history would reverberate through the decades, shaping the
- 3:42dark and unsettling aura that now envelops the abandoned
- 3:46amusement park. The tribe, angered by the
- 3:50desecration of their sacred burial ground, repeatedly warned
- 3:54the Clay family to leave, but they defiantly chose to ignore
- 3:58the warnings. In August of 1783, a group of
- 4:04Native tribesmen descended upon the Clay homestead while the
- 4:08father was out hunting. The Shawnee warriors proceeded
- 4:12to brutally murder the youngest son, Bartley, as he worked in
- 4:16the fields and then scalloped his lifeless body.
- 4:21Tabitha, the daughter, was tracked down and viciously
- 4:25stabbed to death. The oldest son, Ezekiel, was not
- 4:30killed outright, or rather kidnapped, dragged away from his
- 4:34home, and later burned at the stake in a horrifying display of
- 4:39violence. When the patriarch of the family
- 4:43returned home to find his children slaughtered, his thirst
- 4:47for vengeance was immediate and unrelenting.
- 4:52He gathered a posse of other settlers and set out to hunt
- 4:56down and take out several of the Shawnee tribespeople in a bloody
- 5:00act of retaliation. The haunting legacy of the Clay
- 5:05family massacre would linger over the area for years, casting
- 5:11a dark and ominous shadow that deterred most settlers from
- 5:16venturing anywhere near the site.
- 5:20The tragic events that unfolded on this land have infused the
- 5:24abandoned amusement park with something ghostly, as if there
- 5:29were spirits of the past still lingering, unwilling to
- 5:33relinquish their hold on the once vibrant but now forgotten
- 5:37grounds. By pure coincidence, the land
- 5:41where Conley T Snedo chose to erect his amusement park in 1926
- 5:47harpered a dark and unsettling past.
- 5:51Unbeknownst to him, or perhaps disregarded, this very soil had
- 5:56once been stained by the blood of the Clay family, brutally
- 6:00massacred by the Shawnee tribe in retaliation for desecrating
- 6:06their sacred burial grounds. Initially, Snito's venture
- 6:11seemed innocent enough, a simple affair with swing sets, a Ferris
- 6:16wheel and a swimming pond catering to the families of coal
- 6:21miners flocking to the region. However, as the operation
- 6:26expanded, adding a dance hall, concession stands, a swimming
- 6:31pool, motorized rides such as bumper cars, a roller coaster
- 6:37and then paddle boats, it was as if the amusement park was built
- 6:41upon a foundation of darkness. For a time, the park thrived, a
- 6:47vibrant hub of laughter and joy, with patrons blissfully unaware
- 6:52of the gruesome history that lay beneath their feet.
- 6:57Yet the Land's thirst for tragedy seemed insatiable.
- 7:02The foreboding sense lingered, like a specter lurking in the
- 7:06shadows, waiting to cast its sinister veil once more.
- 7:12In the 1950's, the first incident at the park unfolded
- 7:17when a young girl's life was abruptly cut short on the
- 7:20circular swing ride. As the swing hurled at breakneck
- 7:25speed, a truck carelessly backed into its path, causing the girl
- 7:32to collide violently against it, her fragile body no match for
- 7:37the unforgiving force. This tragic event cast a shadow
- 7:43over the entire atmosphere, and the harbinger of darkness that
- 7:47seemed to linger within the park's very foundations was
- 7:51making itself known once again. In 1966, the park's thirst for
- 7:58tragedy was quenched once more when an 11 year old boy, his
- 8:04youthful spirit filled with wonder and excitement, ventured
- 8:09too close to the park's murky pond only to become ensnared in
- 8:14a drainage pipe's unyielding grip.
- 8:17His cries for help went unanswered and it wasn't until
- 8:21over a week later that his lifeless body was discovered the
- 8:26ponds depths having claimed another innocent victim.
- 8:31These high profile incidents weren't merely the tip of the
- 8:34iceberg as whispers of other unsettling occurrences began to
- 8:38circulate. Tales of a man who plunged from
- 8:42the dizzying heights of the Ferris wheel.
- 8:44His motives unknown to the accounts of six tragic deaths
- 8:50during the parks years of operation as told by the current
- 8:54owner, only added to the feelings at the park.
- 8:58In the wake of the young boys drowning, the Shawnee Lake
- 9:02Amusement Park shuttered its gates for good in 1966.
- 9:07The crumbling structures and overgrown landscapes that now
- 9:11stand as reminders of the park's troubled past.
- 9:15A past that seems unwilling to relinquish its hold on the
- 9:19forgotten grounds, casting something ominous over the now
- 9:24abandoned site. The park's descendant to
- 9:27abandonment was a haunting spectacle, its once vibrant
- 9:31attractions reduced to rusted, decaying relics that Pierce
- 9:35through the overgrown landscape like the skeletal remains of
- 9:40long extinct creatures. The site lingered until 1985,
- 9:45when Gaylord White acquired the land, harboring ambitions of
- 9:50resurrecting the park's former glory.
- 9:53However, his efforts were met with resistance, as if the
- 9:57site's troubled history deterred visitors from embracing its
- 10:02revived allure. Despite White's endeavors, the
- 10:06amusement park failed to recapture the magic of its
- 10:09heyday, and after a mere three years, it was forced to shutter
- 10:14its doors once more. In the wake of its failed
- 10:17revival, the land was transformed into a fishing lake
- 10:21and campground. Yet the parks crumbling rooms
- 10:26remained their presence serving as a grim reminder of the
- 10:30tragedies that had once unfolded within its boundaries.
- 10:36Whispers of other worldly occurrences began to circulate.
- 10:40Tales of ghostly apparitions and unexplained phenomena were told
- 10:45in the local bars and on Internet message boards.
- 10:50The Parks Rune stood as a haunting testament to the
- 10:52complex interplay between human ambition and the lingering
- 10:57echoes of the past, a past that seemed unwilling be buried.
- 11:04The abandoned grounds of the former Shawnee Lake amusement
- 11:07park seemed to be a magnet for paranormal occurrences, and the
- 11:11tales that emerge from its crumbling ruins do not
- 11:15disappoint. Visitors often report an
- 11:18unsettling sensation of being watched or followed, as if
- 11:23unseen eyes linger in the shadows.
- 11:27Sudden waves of panic or overwhelming dread wash over
- 11:32some, leaving them with a feeling that defies rational
- 11:37explanation. Jelling accounts speak of
- 11:40disembodied hands pressing upon shoulders or the feeling of
- 11:46being pushed or tapped by an invisible force.
- 11:52Objects have been known to move on their own accord, defying the
- 11:55laws of physics, while shadowy figures lurk among the
- 11:59deteriorating riots, adding to the park's sinister ambience.
- 12:05The swings, once a symbol of childhood joy, now creak back
- 12:10and forth in the absence of wind, as if propelled by unseen
- 12:16hands. Orbs of light flow through the
- 12:20overgrown weeds, their ethereal glow beckoning the curious and
- 12:26the brave. Small child sized apparitions
- 12:30have been reported, dashing among the rustling hulks of long
- 12:34forgotten rides, as if waiting to turn in a ticket for one
- 12:39final time. Even the spirits of the Land's
- 12:42original inhabitants, the Native Americans, are said to make
- 12:46their presence known, with shadowy figures skulking about
- 12:50in the darkness, their whispers carried on the wind.
- 12:56The sounds that permeate the abandoned park only add to its
- 12:59creepy feeling, with a disembodied laughter echoing the
- 13:03stillness, as if the ghosts of children still linger, frozen in
- 13:09time. Whispers seem to come from
- 13:13directly behind people, sending chills down the spines of those
- 13:18brave enough to venture into the park's forgotten corners.
- 13:23Shouts and strange chanting, perhaps in a Native American
- 13:27language, have also been reported.
- 13:31Perhaps most unsettling are the accounts of those who have
- 13:34captured photographic evidence of the park's paranormal
- 13:37activity. Numerous visitors have been
- 13:40shocked to discover ghostly figures or shadowy apparitions
- 13:45lurking within their photographs.
- 13:48Whispers echo through the abandoned grounds, tales of a
- 13:52restless spirit bound to the very swings that once brought
- 13:56her joy. It is here, amidst the rusted
- 14:00frames and tangled vines, but the ghostly presence of a young
- 14:05girl lingers, her essence forever tethered to the tragic
- 14:10moment when her life was cut short.
- 14:15The White family and their pursuit to resurrect the park's
- 14:18former glory unknowingly invited this haunting specter into their
- 14:22midst. They acquired the original swing
- 14:25set, unaware of the dark history it carried, and inadvertently
- 14:30provided a conduit for the girl's spirit to manifest.
- 14:35Those who dare to venture near the swings often recount several
- 14:38weird encounters. A single swing marked by a
- 14:43Crimson ribbon seems to beckon visitors with an unseen force.
- 14:48Yet it is the adjacent seat adorned with an owl ornament
- 14:53that appears to be her favorite haunt.
- 14:56On days when the air hangs still, the owl seems to sway and
- 15:01dance as if propelled by an invisible breeze.
- 15:07Visitors have reported feeling an icy chill caress their skin
- 15:11or the weight of an unseen entity settling beside them on
- 15:15the swings weathered plank. Some have even claimed to hear
- 15:19the faint echoes of childlike laughter tinged with a
- 15:23melancholic undertone carried on the wind's whispers.
- 15:28These unsettling occurrences have left many questioning the
- 15:32boundaries between the realms of the living and the dead, and
- 15:37wondering if the girl's spirit remains bound to this place
- 15:42forever, seeking the joy and innocence that was so cruelly
- 15:46stolen from her. Also lingering with the
- 15:50abandoned Parks confines is the restless spirit of the young boy
- 15:55whose life was also tragically cut short, but by the murky
- 15:59depths of the lake. His ghostly presence seems to
- 16:03wander the grounds, drawn particularly to the front
- 16:07entrance, as if driven by a compulsion to safeguard visitors
- 16:12from the fate that he could not escape.
- 16:16Near the lake's edge, a simple white plastic pinwheel affixed
- 16:20to an old ticket booth appears to serve as a conduit between
- 16:25his ethereal realm and the world of the living.
- 16:30This unassuming pinwheel exhibits an ability to move and
- 16:34spin without the aid of any discernible breeze.
- 16:40Its movements, controlled by an invisible force, seem to respond
- 16:45to the beckoning of those brave enough to engage with it.
- 16:49Witnesses have told chilling encounters where the pinwheels
- 16:52rotation accelerates, slows, or halts entirely in response to
- 16:59spoken commands, as if the little boy is answering their
- 17:04questions or simply acknowledging their existence.
- 17:09Along with the apparitions, another phenomena has been
- 17:12experienced in the park as well, voices echoing from realms
- 17:17beyond our comprehension. These chilling recordings,
- 17:21captured by the intrepid Poly gear of Mountaineer ghosts,
- 17:26offer a haunting glimpse to the unseen forces that linger amidst
- 17:31the decaying structures. One such encounter occurred when
- 17:36Geer ventured to knock the weathered sighting of an
- 17:39abandoned trailer. The silence that followed was
- 17:43shattered by a gruff, disembodied voice that seemingly
- 17:48commanded them to please leave. The ominous utterance sent
- 17:54shivers down the spines of those present, as if the very spirits
- 17:58of the park were issuing a warning to trespassers.
- 18:03Another bone chilling recording took place between the rusted
- 18:06frames of the Ferris wheel. As two friends conversed, their
- 18:11voices mingling within the stillness, A sudden interruption
- 18:16pierced the air. A shockingly clear, high pitched
- 18:20voice, perhaps that of a young girl uttering the haunting
- 18:25words, won't talk. Yet the unsettling phenomena
- 18:31does not end there. In the same location, another
- 18:35recording was captured, what sounded like the wistful plea of
- 18:39a child's voice whispering either I want to swing or I'm on
- 18:46a swing. Above all the other haunting
- 18:49scenery located in the park, the abandoned swings stand as an
- 18:53unsettling beacon, an area that seems to have more activity than
- 18:58the rest of the park combined. Several visitors tell terrifying
- 19:02encounters as the rusted chains creak and groan, seemingly
- 19:08propelled by unseen forces. Sudden chills caress the skin.
- 19:14An overwhelming sense of dread washes over the unweary, as if
- 19:19they've trespassed into a realm or the boundaries between the
- 19:22living and the dead. Blur.
- 19:26At the heart of these unsettling occurrences lies the persistent
- 19:30sightings of a ghostly young girl, her form clad in a ruffled
- 19:35pink dress stained with the Crimson hues.
- 19:38Tragedy. Some claim to have witnessed her
- 19:41spectral figure swing upon the swing.
- 19:44Others recount her haunting presence lingering nearby, her
- 19:49gaze piercing through the veil that separates our world.
- 19:53The park's current owner, a man who was stared into the abyss of
- 19:57the unknown, tells his own chilling encounters with the
- 20:01girl's spirit. He speaks of moments when his
- 20:04body froze, paralyzed by her ethereal gaze, as if she held
- 20:10dominion over him. His words paint a vivid picture,
- 20:14the strange sensations that permeate the swing's vicinity,
- 20:19seats swaying without wind. I see blasts of cold air
- 20:23caressing the skin. In an inexplicable warmth
- 20:27radiating from the very center, as if the girl's essence lingers
- 20:32here forever, bound to the place where her life was extinguished.
- 20:38In a haunting recollection shared with the Travel Channel,
- 20:42the owner's words echo with the weight of one who was born
- 20:45witness to the unexplainable. Sometimes this seed will start
- 20:50to move or sway your hand till you feel cold air blowing
- 20:54through the sea and then you get to the middle and you feel
- 20:58something warm. And we believe that that's her
- 21:01spirit. Certain areas seem to exert an
- 21:05unsettling pole, drawing in paranormal occurrences like
- 21:08moths to a flame. The Ferris wheel, it's rusted
- 21:13frame frozen in time, has become a haunting focal point for
- 21:18unexplained sightings. Visitors have reported glimpsing
- 21:22shadowy figures seated within the precarious confines of its
- 21:26cars, particularly the one locked eternally at the 9 O
- 21:32clock position. Some even claim to have
- 21:35witnessed ghostly apparitions plummeting from the heights of
- 21:39the Ferris wheel only to vanish into the ether, leaving
- 21:44onlookers questioning the boundaries of reality.
- 21:48Could these spectral forms be the lingering essence of the
- 21:51unfortunate souls purportedly leapt to their demise from the
- 21:55Ferris wheels lofty perch? Or are they merely tricks of
- 21:59light and shadow cast by the encroaching vegetation that
- 22:05clings to the decaying metal structure?
- 22:08The uncertainty only adds to the feel of the abandoned amusement
- 22:13park. The park's murky, drained pond
- 22:17also harbors its share of haunting tales.
- 22:21Fishermen casting their lines into the stagnant waters have
- 22:25reported sightings of shadowy figures gliding beneath the
- 22:28surface, their forms distorted by the rippling depths.
- 22:35Inexplicable waves and disturbances have been known to
- 22:39ripple across the pond surface, as if something unseen lurks
- 22:43below, stirring the waters with its presence.
- 22:49Some brave souls who have ventured into the ponds embrace
- 22:52have even claimed to feel an unseen force tugging at them, as
- 22:57if an entity from beyond seeks to pull them under and hold them
- 23:03within its watery embrace. The desolate concession stands,
- 23:08once bustling hubs of activity, now stand as silent Sentinels,
- 23:14their empty shells bearing witness to haunting apparitions.
- 23:19Visitors have reported sightings of what appear to be Native
- 23:22American figures aimlessly wandering those abandoned
- 23:26structures, their present shrouded in mystery.
- 23:30What draws these spectral forms to this forgotten place?
- 23:35Their motives remain obscured. The history of the unexplained,
- 23:41coupled with the undeniably bizarre ambience that shrouds
- 23:44this place, have transformed the abandoned Shawnee Lake amusement
- 23:49park into a Mecca for those seeking a brush with the
- 23:53supernatural. Or the macabre has become a
- 23:57prime destination for paranormal investigators, ghost hunters,
- 24:03and thrill seekers alike. And Parks reputation has
- 24:07captured the attention of numerous television programs,
- 24:11each seeking to uncover the sinister forces that lurk just
- 24:15beneath the surface. Some of these shows claim to
- 24:19have encountered genuine brushes with supernatural entities, but
- 24:24are these encounters true or mere entertainment?
- 24:29While these paranormal reality shows undoubtedly seek to
- 24:32amplify the spooky factor, the accounts they present cannot
- 24:37always be so easily dismissed. They offer glimpses into the
- 24:41haunting phenomena seem to permeate the grounds, beckoning
- 24:46those with insatiable curiosity for the unknown to venture
- 24:51forth. The abandoned Shawnee Lake
- 24:54Amusement Park now embraces its haunting legacy, inviting the
- 24:59intrepid to unravel the sinister secrets that lurk within its
- 25:03crumbling confines. While the parks grounds remain
- 25:07accessible for fishing and camping, the dilapidated rides
- 25:12and structures themselves are off limits for most of the year
- 25:17because their decaying state poses potential hazards to the
- 25:21unwary. However, from October the 25th
- 25:26to the 31st, the park opens its gates for the dark carnival
- 25:30event, offering daring souls the opportunity to embark on
- 25:35haunting tours and experience a chilling haunted house
- 25:39attraction. Visitors are guided through the
- 25:43parks crumbling ruins, their footsteps echoing through the
- 25:47desolate concession stands and past the rusted frames.
- 25:52The Ferris wheel where spectral figures are still said to linger
- 25:57to the depths of the drained pond.
- 26:00And at the heart of it all, the abandoned swings still stand,
- 26:06their rusted chains creaking and groaning.
- 26:10For those unwilling to brave the guided tours, the surrounding
- 26:14woods offer camping opportunities through the
- 26:17looming presence of the amusement parks ruins piercing
- 26:21through the tree line, casting an ominous shadow over the
- 26:25landscape. If abandoned sites invoke an
- 26:28unsettling chill and forsaken, amusement parks must be the
- 26:33epitome of haunted. Abandoned parks with a legacy of
- 26:37death and tragedy are about as spine tingling as it gets.
- 26:42Whether or not any authentic spectral entities linger here,
- 26:46an undeniable air of desolation, abandonment and bleak dread
- 26:52hangs heavy in the air, as if accumulating a dead of fear for
- 26:57every child's smile that once graced it's now rusted time worn
- 27:03gates. Is this sense of foreboding and
- 27:08our tendency to perceive phantoms in such locations
- 27:12merely illusions and tall tales? Projections of our morbid
- 27:18curiosity? An innate aversion to the
- 27:21discarded, unwanted places of our world?
- 27:27Or do some of these sites truly harbor or channel forces beyond
- 27:32our comprehension? Perhaps the answer lies in a
- 27:36daring nighttime stroll to the hollow shell of what was once
- 27:41Shawnee Lake Amusement Park, if you possess the fortitude to
- 27:46confront the unknown. Thank you guys so much for
