Latest / Xenomania / Obsession is Pure Psychological Terror - Xenomania 83
Transcript
- 0:00Jon: This week on Xenomania, we talk about one of the hottest movies of 2026.
- 0:07When a lovelorn young man makes a wish hoping his crush will love him more than
- 0:12anyone else, it works, and for a moment it seems like his dream has come true.
- 0:19But as her free will evaporates, obsession grows into insanity and terror.
- 0:26Can Bear escape his self-inflicted torment?
- 0:30We'll find out in this spoiler-heavy episode.
- 0:33Additionally, we play Slasher Stash, and no one will slash a favorite
- 0:38director's entire filmography, right?
- 0:43This is obsession.
- 0:46This is xenomania, and we all know better than to break a one-wish willow.
- 0:53I think
- 1:10right with your mustache?
- 1:11It's very '70s biker, leather hat biker
- 1:20Kearns: Were you, were you just enthralled with arm wrestling?
- 1:24Like, did you decide you were gonna enter a tournament and you must
- 1:27win it despite Lincoln Hawk needing to get his son back in his life?
- 1:30Ryan: That was the goal.
- 1:31That was the goal.
- 1:32Uh, but it, it didn't end up that way this week
- 1:35Kearns: listeners, John and I think that Ryan's mustache
- 1:38might be a little over the top.
- 1:40That's all we're saying.
- 1:41not talking about that movie tonight.
- 1:43We're talking about Obsession
- 1:46Jon: Yeah.
- 1:48The modern obsession, the current obsession in our society
- 1:53Ryan: Which is
- 1:54Kearns: and Ryan's mustache.
- 1:55No, it
- 1:56Ryan: say with just the movie.
- 1:57The movie is everyone's obsessing, not to put a pun on it, over this movie
- 2:02because it's written well, characters, great filmography, cine- cinematography.
- 2:09Uh, the editing I learned today, Curry Barker, who directed and wrote this
- 2:14film, uh, edited the film too, and that takes a lot 'cause editing you
- 2:18can… Like, especially when it's your baby, you wanted to make it as perfect
- 2:22as apple pie, and he, he does that.
- 2:26'Cause I feel like… What?
- 2:28What's wrong with
- 2:29Jon: Is apple pie perfect?
- 2:30Ryan: It ca- it can be.
- 2:32Kearns: one,
- 2:32Ryan: It can be perfect.
- 2:33You know, we just gotta tell your mom we ate it.
- 2:36Uh, but, you know, with Obsession, what, no
- 2:40Jon: Don't you talk about my mom.
- 2:42Don't you talk about my mom like that
- 2:44Kearns: Talk about another man's mom's apple pie.
- 2:47We could talk about that.
- 2:48That mustache has got you acting all kinds of crazy
- 2:51Ryan: There's an American Pie reference, thank you very much.
- 2:54But,
- 2:54Kearns: Oh, that is an American Pie reference.
- 2:56He's right.
- 2:57He's right.
- 2:58Ryan: come on now.
- 2:59How d-
- 2:59Jon: It is.
- 3:01Ryan: But, you know, he does excellent with the editing.
- 3:05Like, the cuts are very well put together.
- 3:08It doesn't slow.
- 3:09It's a very quick-paced film, and I like it
- 3:12Kearns: That's something that pulls you in right away is the pacing of it.
- 3:15you get the immediate, like, issue with Bear right off the jump.
- 3:19And they do a good job unveiling it.
- 3:20The little twist with the waitress
- 3:23Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:23Kearns: stuff like that's kinda cool.
- 3:25And, uh, you get- you meet Ian.
- 3:27You meet the whole cast pretty quickly, actually.
- 3:29Jon: Yeah.
- 3:30Kearns: scene you
- 3:30Ryan: Yep.
- 3:30Kearns: meet… What's the other girl's
- 3:32Ryan: Sarah
- 3:32Jon: Sarah
- 3:33Kearns: You meet Sarah the next scene in the bar.
- 3:36But yeah, they get it rolling well.
- 3:38You get the lay of the land, and I just, I did, I enjoyed kind of the
- 3:42cuts, how they paced it, that they didn't linger on anything too long,
- 3:46and jumped sort of right into it
- 3:49Ryan: He established everything, uh, quickly, which is, I don't wanna say
- 3:54it's unique for today's filmmaking, but I feel like certain horror films that
- 3:58we've watched recently where it's like that slow build acclimate us to the
- 4:03world, this was just like, "This is the world. here we go." It's very, um, we were
- 4:07talking about how he does a sketch comedy called That's a Bad Idea on YouTube.
- 4:12It's very, like, YouTube-y, if that makes sense, where
- 4:15Kearns: No, it
- 4:16Ryan: they're like, "Like, get into it," you know?
- 4:18Kearns: very… Yeah, that's a good way to put it.
- 4:20It's very modern in that it's paying attention to the fact that people don't
- 4:23like, in a movie like this especially, people don't wanna linger around.
- 4:28we need the scenes to shift.
- 4:29We need to continue the motion so we don't lose our
- 4:32Jon: Hmm.
- 4:32Kearns: And even as a 42-year-old who lived before this kind of life, I'm
- 4:37becoming like that as time goes on.
- 4:39I'm fighting it, but I've noticed it.
- 4:41Ryan: Keep up the good fight
- 4:43Jon: I, I appreciate a film that does it.
- 4:46I don't think it al- has to always be that way.
- 4:48I like the slow burns a lot,
- 4:51Kearns: Yes.
- 4:52Jon: didn't even have to be
- 4:54Kearns: Ryan just mentioned, uh, Pan's Labyrinth and, that's a
- 4:57movie where you have to settle in,
- 4:59Ryan: Yep
- 4:59Kearns: attention,
- 5:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:01Mm-hmm.
- 5:01Kearns: immerse yourself in it.
- 5:02It's not necessarily going to whisk you away here and there and everywhere
- 5:05right away and stuff like that.
- 5:08And why are we talking about Pan's Labyrinth again, Bill Hurley?
- 5:13Ryan: we're talking about Pan's Labyrinth because, you know, ironically, I have
- 5:16an obsession with movies, as we all do, and I didn't realize how many Guillermo
- 5:20del Toro films I have in my collection.
- 5:22Kearns: What's that guy's name again?
- 5:23Ryan: Guillermo del Toro.
- 5:24Kearns: Glarmo.
- 5:25Ryan: Guillermo
- 5:26Kearns: like, like a bad glare mo when you're driving to work and the
- 5:28sun's low and you're like, "Glarmo."
- 5:30Ryan: DeLermo?
- 5:31Come on.
- 5:31Guillermo.
- 5:32Guillermo.
- 5:33Guillermo del Toro.
- 5:34I didn't realize I had so many…
- 5:36Kearns: in there.
- 5:36You could say Guillermo.
- 5:39Ryan: I just didn't realize how many films I've had, and we've been
- 5:41talking for so, like, long now.
- 5:44Like, about a year since Frankenstein, Pan's Labyrinth, and it just shocked
- 5:48me, like, how many movies are in my library, and I didn't even know
- 5:51Kearns: Oh, that, that he had made?
- 5:53Ryan: Oh God, yeah.
- 5:53The only one I'm really missing is Cronos, and that has a beautiful Criterion
- 5:58collection available at Barnes & Noble,
- 6:00Kearns: I would love
- 6:00Ryan: 50% off
- 6:02Kearns: criterions of his work would be, oh, oh, chef's kiss
- 6:08Ryan: They're all
- 6:08Jon: I think almost all of them are.
- 6:10Uh, the Hellboys I don't think are.
- 6:12Frankenstein's October.
- 6:14Ryan: Pacific
- 6:14Jon: Frankenstein in October.
- 6:16Pacific Rim isn't.
- 6:18Kearns: Yeah, that's right.
- 6:19He goes into the action stuff.
- 6:21I mean, it's like serious work,
- 6:23Ryan: Is,
- 6:23Kearns: sellout
- 6:24Ryan: is Kronos though, Kronos is serious, but it's like, I feel
- 6:28like that's his like first film.
- 6:30But was The Relic ever a part of the Criterion Collection?
- 6:34Is it The Relic or The Mimic?
- 6:35Kearns: I was gonna say the Relic isn't
- 6:37Jon: He's Mimic.
- 6:37Ryan: The Mimic.
- 6:38Sorry.
- 6:39Jon: somebody,
- 6:39Ryan: flip those
- 6:40Jon: else just put Mimic out on 4K.
- 6:43Maybe Keno Lorber?
- 6:47Somebody else put it out, like, within the last three or four months
- 6:51Kearns: Nice
- 6:52Ryan: At least they could have released
- 6:52Kearns: by the way.
- 6:53We should do The Relic,
- 6:54Ryan: Oh, that's
- 6:55Jon: We should do the relic
- 6:56Ryan: We should
- 6:57Kearns: enjoyed The Relic, and Tom Sizemore carries that
- 6:59movie, and that's not normal.
- 7:02It's not normal, and it's a
- 7:03Ryan: It's, it's weird because it's at a time where The Mimic did
- 7:06come out at the same time, and I think the conversation was what
- 7:09Jon: Yes.
- 7:10Ryan: The Relic or
- 7:10Jon: Yes
- 7:11Ryan: And I feel like, I don't know, I feel, yeah, I was
- 7:15gonna say, like, it's close.
- 7:17close
- 7:18Kearns: better.
- 7:19'cause the people who
- 7:20Jon: Yeah.
- 7:20Kearns: got in that museum, you want them to
- 7:22Ryan: Well, yeah.
- 7:23Kearns: That's also
- 7:24Jon: Yeah, yeah
- 7:25Kearns: Who's that?
- 7:26Diane, uh, not Diane Keaton.
- 7:28Uh, what's her name?
- 7:29Ryan: Oh
- 7:31Kearns: the president in that movie too
- 7:33Ryan: Yes
- 7:34Jon: Diane Lane
- 7:35Kearns: I wish, dude.
- 7:36Diane Lane was, oh my God, she was my, like, older woman obsession forever.
- 7:42Ryan: Let's see here.
- 7:42Tom Sizemore, Penelope Ann Miller, Linda Hunt, James Whitmore, Cloris Leachman,
- 7:48Kearns: it?
- 7:49Ryan: Hunt?
- 7:50Oh, oh
- 7:51Kearns: her.
- 7:53Ryan: I don't think she, she was
- 7:54Jon: It's probably Penelope and Miller
- 7:56Ryan: Yeah, I was gonna say
- 7:57Kearns: 2020 one that's messing me up.
- 7:58Yeah.
- 8:01Why is there a 20-- 1997, what are you doing to me?
- 8:04Ryan: How dare they make a sequel
- 8:06Kearns: It'll be Anne Miller
- 8:07Jon: Yeah.
- 8:11Kearns: All right.
- 8:11Anyway, everybody, back to Obsession.
- 8:13Jon: Back to obsession
- 8:15Kearns: this movie got everybody going because of Freaky Nikki and how
- 8:18well the actress plays Freaky Nikki.
- 8:20the onset of her is super well done.
- 8:24So
- 8:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:25Kearns: don't think we should need to explain to the listeners
- 8:27generally, like, how that happens.
- 8:29You should have seen Obsession.
- 8:30If you didn't, definitely watch it before
- 8:32Ryan: Yes
- 8:33Jon: Yeah, d- we are g- we are going to spoil the crap out of
- 8:37this movie over the next hour.
- 8:39If you have not watched it, stop now.
- 8:44Just stop now
- 8:45Kearns: spoiling it.
- 8:45so when he makes the wish, and we'll talk, we'll save the fact that he's
- 8:49such an idiot for having to make the wish in the car in that moment.
- 8:51she comes right back.
- 8:52Like, it happens immediately
- 8:55Ryan: Yes, but she's like standing under like the dark silhouette of the light
- 9:00under her porch just staring at him.
- 9:02I feel like it was like,
- 9:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:03Mm-hmm.
- 9:06Ryan: with the two-faced one?
- 9:08But,
- 9:09Kearns: do it for you?
- 9:10Ryan: uh, no, like I, I feel like it was, it was like, it's nostalgic
- 9:14because you go into these like, uh, you know, go into Spencer's, right?
- 9:18And they had all the gag stuff, and then you would see something like that, like,
- 9:23"Will it work as a kid?" And then you get older, it's like, "Ah, that's, that's
- 9:27not real." And it kinda, you know, you-
- 9:30Kearns: that a couple times in this movie though,
- 9:32Ryan: Oh, yeah
- 9:33Kearns: They do.
- 9:34don't wanna argue with you because I don't want you to rip my arm off, but a few
- 9:38scenes… You're right about that one.
- 9:39That one's a little like, "What's going on?" But the, the scenes where
- 9:42she's freaky Nicki in the house and she walks backwards into the
- 9:45shadows and stuff and does the-- That
- 9:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:47Mm-hmm.
- 9:48Well
- 9:49Kearns: that,
- 9:49Ryan: or watching you while you're sleeping?
- 9:52Kearns: Yeah,
- 9:53Jon: the scene, the scene with the flower pot in front of her face isn't her.
- 9:57That's a dancer that they hired to do that because he wanted, like,
- 10:01specific moves that Indy Nevareck wasn't probably gonna be able to do.
- 10:07So he wanted that more, like, fluid motion.
- 10:11Kearns: Cool.
- 10:12Jon: Yeah
- 10:12Kearns: trivia.
- 10:14Um
- 10:15Jon: there's some cool trivia around this too.
- 10:17I have another pretty cool one too.
- 10:19So
- 10:20Kearns: hear it
- 10:21Jon: the, four main characters all work in a music shop.
- 10:24Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 10:25Which was
- 10:25Jon: That, music shop is Cassell's Music in California,
- 10:30Ryan: Okay
- 10:30Jon: which is the same music store from Wayne's World
- 10:36Kearns: Oh, cool.
- 10:37Ryan: That is
- 10:38Jon: Ja.
- 10:39Ryan: All right.
- 10:39Jon: Ja
- 10:39Ryan: there a connection?
- 10:40Are we, are we doing a
- 10:42Jon: I say, I, I mean,
- 10:44Kearns: They're
- 10:44Jon: mean if,
- 10:44Kearns: Sam Neill's the diner guy?
- 10:47Jon: yeah.
- 10:48If, if Lee Cronin had made this, yeah, it's the same universe
- 10:51Kearns: his name?
- 10:52Al Bundy, whatever his name is.
- 10:53Ryan: Oh,
- 10:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:54Ryan: Ed O- Ed O-
- 10:55Kearns: Neill, by the way.
- 10:55Since
- 10:56Ryan: Ed O'Neill
- 10:57Kearns: we're that, we're on it.
- 10:58Ed O'Neill, right.
- 10:59Sam Neill was on my mind.
- 11:00that's super cool, John
- 11:02Jon: Yeah.
- 11:03I stumbled on that today.
- 11:04I thought that was pretty cool
- 11:06Ryan: There was no s-
- 11:07Kearns: on
- 11:07Ryan: no stairway to heaven though in this film, guys.
- 11:10Jon: No.
- 11:10Ryan: that
- 11:11Kearns: nor was
- 11:11Jon: I, uh, I mean, there are some trips to heaven, but
- 11:15Kearns: Yeah.
- 11:15And boy, do they go there the, the hard way.
- 11:19Um, all
- 11:20Jon: We'll get to that
- 11:22Kearns: the onset of Freaky Nicki kind of starts this movie off where
- 11:24you get the tone and tenor of it, and you realize kind of like what
- 11:27you're in for, and that was cool.
- 11:30Jon: Yeah.
- 11:30I really like those moments at the, right after he makes that wish
- 11:35where you know it's working, Bear kinda knows it's working, but Nikki
- 11:41is clueless to what's going on.
- 11:43It's like, she went from, you know, going home after being driven home by
- 11:49this kinda dorky guy who she may or may not be interested in at all, and now
- 11:55all of a sudden she's just drawn to him
- 11:59Kearns: Right.
- 11:59Gone is, uh, sh… I, and it's also weird in the beginning, almost like the whatever
- 12:04Freaky Nikki is, is getting its bearings
- 12:07Jon: Uh-huh
- 12:07Kearns: 'cause she's sort of like half in, half out.
- 12:11Ryan: Yes
- 12:11Kearns: up, walks away, like, "What's happening? What did I do?" And then she
- 12:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:15Mm-hmm.
- 12:16So I would imagine what that is, is that the longer you're under
- 12:22the control of the wish, the further away from yourself you get
- 12:27Kearns: That makes sense.
- 12:29That makes perfect sense.
- 12:30And Bear begins to notice something's off relatively early 'cause it's
- 12:36impossible not to notice something's
- 12:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:38Mm-hmm.
- 12:39Kearns: early.
- 12:41Ryan: Yeah.
- 12:41You heard the, you heard,
- 12:42Kearns: came through.
- 12:43Ryan: you heard the motorcycles?
- 12:44All right, just wanted to make sure.
- 12:45Kearns: That's okay.
- 12:46It works with your, uh, your whole theme tonight.
- 12:48Jon: Y- your gang's here for you
- 12:50Kearns: yeah, exactly.
- 12:51They're ready to ride, buddy.
- 12:53Um, but yeah, Bear notices something's off relatively early, and he's not
- 12:57even remotely interested in dealing with it or changing the setup at all
- 13:03Ryan: 'Cause he got what he wanted.
- 13:04He got her full attention, even
- 13:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:07Ryan: to the point where, like, he's like, you know, you say he's weird, he's
- 13:10awkward, and you can see that he notices that something's wrong, but he… And this
- 13:16is where I start disliking the character is, like, he still goes through with
- 13:20it, and it's like even though, like, you love her, like, if you love her so much,
- 13:24wouldn't you want to kind of help her?
- 13:25And no, he's just like, "Yeah," but he's like 50/50, and then when he
- 13:30tries to make a move, that's when she screams in her face, and that's when
- 13:33I first, like, jump in the film, too.
- 13:36Kearns: Yeah,
- 13:36Jon: Well,
- 13:37Ryan: like, yeah
- 13:37Jon: you do have sort of these moments where he's in, very early on, where
- 13:42he's not sure and, like, he, you know, he doesn't wanna, the f- that first
- 13:47night he doesn't wanna do anything that feels like he'd be taking advantage.
- 13:52he's sort of trying to keep Nikki at arm's length even though
- 13:56it's exactly what he wanted.
- 13:58And then, like, he sort of feeds her an excuse of being, you know, on substances
- 14:03and chemicals the night before, so she's able to latch onto that as a
- 14:07temporary excuse for how she behaved.
- 14:10But he, knows
- 14:13Kearns: Yep.
- 14:14He definitely knows.
- 14:15And
- 14:15Jon: And…
- 14:16Kearns: more, like I said, uh, about Bear n- being, uh,
- 14:20literally incapable of closing
- 14:23Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:23Kearns: when she's in Freaky Nikki mode for a while,
- 14:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:27Kearns: a little
- 14:28Jon: And
- 14:28Kearns: John, we're saying
- 14:29Jon: like, like I, I understand his initial compulsion.
- 14:35Like, it's h- I mean, I'm a person who always struggled
- 14:38with that kind of thing too.
- 14:40And I, like, I definitely like wish that someone would, would love me, but like not
- 14:46Kearns: Aw.
- 14:47Ryan: We love you,
- 14:48Jon: Yeah.
- 14:49I, I mean, I'm, I'm comfortable in it now, but, you know, there, there
- 14:53was the, they, yeah, they, th- like I, I, I think this, people who know
- 14:59me sort of forget how, you know, reserved I am when I first meet people.
- 15:05So I, I definitely understand where Bear is.
- 15:09Ryan: Okay
- 15:10Jon: To start, to start
- 15:12Kearns: Start.
- 15:13Ryan: To
- 15:13Jon: for about,
- 15:14Ryan: keyword
- 15:15Jon: for a couple minutes, then it,
- 15:18Kearns: they
- 15:18Jon: know, you, you, you immediately, you immediately recognize that he needs
- 15:25to do something and he's unwilling and, you know, maybe incapable of doing it
- 15:32Kearns: Yeah.
- 15:33And I, he isn't unlikable in this realization yet, he's on his way to
- 15:41being unlikable in this realization when you're watching the movie.
- 15:44but you're sort of so enthralled with what's happening with Nikki
- 15:46at that point that you're not
- 15:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:48Kearns: attention so much to what Bear's doing situation until a little bit later.
- 15:55But what does make Bear a lot more unlikable, and I'm not sure if
- 15:59they did it for this reason, when he inadvertently murders his cat.
- 16:04Ryan: Negligence.
- 16:05Kearns: that.
- 16:05Ryan: Negligence
- 16:07Jon: we have to touch on…
- 16:08Kearns: Ellie, ear muff it for me.
- 16:10Jon: this, this was almost the shortest a movie was on our calendar.
- 16:16Kearns: Yeah,
- 16:17Jon: it
- 16:17Kearns: worried
- 16:17Jon: li- it literally almost got shut off within five minutes when he comes
- 16:22home and the cat is dead on the floor.
- 16:24Ryan: You were really gonna shut it off?
- 16:27Jon: oh, 100%.
- 16:29100-
- 16:30Kearns: Well, we were goading him on a
- 16:32Ryan: Yeah
- 16:32Kearns: by saying the second half's really good, and it, it
- 16:34does wrap that part up eventually.
- 16:36But it does get
- 16:37Jon: That's the,
- 16:38Ryan: Well,
- 16:38Jon: that's the only reason I stuck it out.
- 16:42That, and that you guys had already watched it, and I was like, I know
- 16:45it didn't wanna waste you guys' time, so I forced my way through it.
- 16:49And, and I ended up liking it, but to me, it's something, it's
- 16:56the only flaw in this movie.
- 16:58You- they didn't have to do it.
- 17:01I firmly, I firmly… I, well,
- 17:05Ryan: To
- 17:05Jon: le- let me, let me, let me s- let me start there, like,
- 17:08'cause there's a, there's, I think there's a few things they did.
- 17:11it gives sort of an immediate normal thing for Freaky Nicky to latch onto
- 17:17in the sympathy for his dead cat.
- 17:20Ryan: Okay
- 17:20Jon: know?
- 17:21So, so g- it gives that.
- 17:22It gives… immediately shows you that, Bear is incapable of caring for things.
- 17:30He's irresponsible, you know, that's sort of how he then carries
- 17:34on into his relationship with her.
- 17:37And it also establishes that he has oxies in the house, and that's
- 17:43gonna be super important later on.
- 17:46That said, you could've done all of that without killing a cat.
- 17:51You don't have to do it.
- 17:52It's so, so… I was talking about this with Allison, because obviously
- 17:56she didn't watch Obsession with me.
- 17:58Once I told her about the cat, that was it.
- 18:01Like, um, but you know, we… He, that's not really, you didn't ha-
- 18:07Like, but we were talking about how there are some movies that really
- 18:12does serve the plot, like John Wick
- 18:16Kearns: Right,
- 18:16Ryan: Yeah
- 18:18Jon: You need, the dog, the dog needs to die so he has something that he's
- 18:22that passionate about to come out of retirement and go on, on that spree.
- 18:28Kearns: Right
- 18:28Jon: The Evil Dead remake, however, you didn't have to do it.
- 18:33Ryan: Yeah
- 18:34Kearns: Yeah,
- 18:34Jon: And I-
- 18:35Kearns: value ones are pissing me off.
- 18:36I
- 18:37Jon: Yeah.
- 18:38And, and I mean, Obsession sort of walks that line of being a shock one.
- 18:42Ryan: Yes
- 18:43Jon: y- you know, it's a, one of the real first defining traits of Bear
- 18:48is knowing that he has a cat, and then it's immediately dead on screen
- 18:54Kearns: Yeah.
- 18:56Jon: And that, I don't know, like it just…
- 19:00Ryan: It's a plot
- 19:01Jon: Yeah
- 19:02Ryan: Thinking about it, it
- 19:03Kearns: also, leverages it to try to get her sympathy
- 19:06Ryan: Yeah
- 19:06Kearns: Nikki's still regular Nikki, and I also thought that was incredibly lame
- 19:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:11Ryan: Oh, it was poor how he like delivers it too, and Ian's
- 19:15over his shoulder just like
- 19:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:19Well
- 19:20Ryan: the bear
- 19:21Kearns: what we find out later, about Ian, and we don't need to
- 19:24keep it a secret now, is that he's sleeping with Nikki on and off,
- 19:28Ryan: Yep
- 19:28Kearns: is that he is quietly sabotaging Bear a little
- 19:32Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:32Kearns: scene if you watch, if you watch closely and
- 19:36Ryan: Oh, yeah
- 19:36Kearns: the beats of something like that.
- 19:37You're like, "Oh, shoot. Okay," later on.
- 19:42Making it so that he's another character who's very unlikable
- 19:45Jon: Yes.
- 19:46Ryan: Yes
- 19:46Jon: men in this movie are pretty hard to like
- 19:51Kearns: Are hard to like.
- 19:52Also, just to, not to wrap up the cat just yet, we also didn't
- 19:55need to drag it out and have her
- 19:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:58Kearns: h- the cat as a meal,
- 20:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:01We didn't…
- 20:01Ryan: fur still intact
- 20:03Kearns: A ritual for the,
- 20:04Jon: we didn't need the ritual, we didn't need the, the meal.
- 20:07Like, you could, you could've, you could've sort of established
- 20:12all those things without it being centered around a dead animal.
- 20:17And listen, I, ca- cats in particular because, I mean, it's pretty
- 20:22well established that I live with cats, I share a house with cats.
- 20:27I definitely don't own cats.
- 20:28If anything, they own me.
- 20:30But
- 20:33Ryan: But if you get into the idea of her, like, losing herself and maybe a little
- 20:38bit of part of her still in it, and that's where her certain glitches happen with the
- 20:42screaming and the reactions and realizing sh- she's not where she wants to be.
- 20:47Maybe she did it out of spite.
- 20:50She realizes that the cat, you know, the death of the cat hurts him.
- 20:54He made the mistake.
- 20:55It's his fault.
- 20:56He's gotta own it.
- 20:57And then,
- 20:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:58Ryan: I'm gonna feed you the cat.
- 21:00You ha- you're having me go through this wish.
- 21:03I'm gonna feed you the cat.
- 21:04I'm gonna make it like a little shrine for it.
- 21:07I'm gonna torment
- 21:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 21:08Ryan: you know?
- 21:09And I mean, I feel like that connects later on when we talk
- 21:12about what, um, Elshi goes through.
- 21:15I think that's her trying to make him feel guilty and feel bad
- 21:19and putting him through his own torment for making this great wish
- 21:22Jon: Yeah.
- 21:23Yeah, that, that's, that… I mean, but she also additionally, like aside
- 21:32from just being under his spell at that point, she is like f- mentally
- 21:39falling apart because, I read Curry Barker said that the real Nikki is in
- 21:44kind of a purgatory during, while she's under, and that kinda makes sense.
- 21:50And like she's, she has moments of lucidity, fewer and fewer as the
- 21:55movie goes on until like basically it's only when she's unconscious
- 21:59that she's herself anymore.
- 22:02Kearns: Is super
- 22:03Jon: It's
- 22:03Kearns: on in the movie when she speaks to him.
- 22:05But that's, that's almost like the, done flirting with the
- 22:08idea, making us think at all.
- 22:10They just reveal that Nikki is trapped and Bear is now fully aware
- 22:16Jon: Yeah.
- 22:16Kearns: is in pain
- 22:18Ryan: I had to rewind that scene
- 22:19Kearns: something.
- 22:20Ryan: a
- 22:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:20Kearns: scene
- 22:21Ryan: I rewound it two or three times because I just wanted to hear what she was
- 22:25saying, and I was like, "No way they're doing this." And I was like, "Okay."
- 22:31Skill?
- 22:34Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 22:35Um,
- 22:36Ryan: You have a game for us?
- 22:37Kearns: I was gonna say, John, you got a game?
- 22:40Jon: Of course I have a game.
- 22:41It's another Slasher Stash with devastating consequences again.
- 22:46Ryan: Uh, can we just do a blind ranking if it's so devastating?
- 22:51Jon: Nope.
- 22:53I'm gonna tell you, if you slash a movie on this list, you have slashed
- 22:58the entire director's filmography
- 23:02Ryan: Uh-huh.
- 23:05Jon: It's three and five, three and five, but if you guess the theme,
- 23:11I'll give you an extra stash.
- 23:13Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 23:14Jon: So we'll start with
- 23:16Kearns: We
- 23:16Jon: another Blum,
- 23:18Ryan: Well,
- 23:18Jon: another Blum, another Blumhouse movie.
- 23:21Get Out is our first one
- 23:23Ryan: Hold on.
- 23:23Is that a guess, Kearns?
- 23:26Kearns: No
- 23:27Jon: No, he said he can't say that.
- 23:29Ryan: Oh,
- 23:29Jon: What are you trying, what are you trying to take his stash away already?
- 23:33Kearns: yeah
- 23:34Ryan: I was gonna say top five comedy, people in comedy to horror directors
- 23:40Jon: No.
- 23:41Ryan: Basic.
- 23:41Now, damn it
- 23:42Jon: No.
- 23:42Do you want me to take a save, uh, stash away?
- 23:45Kearns: Yeah.
- 23:46That was a, that was definitely a guess.
- 23:48Jon: That was definitely a guess.
- 23:50Oof.
- 23:51Ryan, I hope you ultimately get this right.
- 23:54Kearns: Yes,
- 23:55Ryan: You're, you're,
- 23:55Jon: all right
- 23:56Ryan: messing up my top five tonight
- 23:58Kearns: Oh,
- 23:59Jon: Get Out is your first movie?
- 24:01Uh, uh, well, if Get Out is in your, is in your top five, you better stash it
- 24:05Ryan: It's not, but like
- 24:07Kearns: word
- 24:07Ryan: you get rid of everything
- 24:09Kearns: the right word.
- 24:10I'm trying to help you now, Ryan.
- 24:11Possession's not the right word, but we see what it is.
- 24:15And the next movie will solidify what it is, I'm sure.
- 24:18But
- 24:18Jon: think it will
- 24:20Kearns: Get Out.
- 24:21I enjoyed Get Out quite a bit.
- 24:22It was a phenomenon when it launched, and that's fine.
- 24:27Jon: Not dissimilar from the, the obsession phenomenon, by the way
- 24:32Kearns: Yeah.
- 24:33Ryan: Yeah
- 24:33Kearns: in love with it.
- 24:34I watched it and I was like, "Oh, what a mediocre film."
- 24:38Jon: I thought, I thought it was good.
- 24:39I thought I, they, I liked it.
- 24:41It, I got to it too late though
- 24:44Kearns: Oh, that might be it.
- 24:45We weren't in the,
- 24:47Jon: Yeah.
- 24:48Kearns: of it.
- 24:48Yeah.
- 24:49Jon: Yeah, by the time I got to it, it was l- a huge hype machine
- 24:53Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 24:56Jon: Brian, did you say s- did you re- answer?
- 24:59Ryan: No, 'cause I'm-- this is gonna… Like, 'cause it gets rid of
- 25:02his whole filmography that really… 'Cause that's why I said comedy to
- 25:05horror directors, 'cause Jordan Peele.
- 25:08Uh.
- 25:08Yeah.
- 25:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 25:09Ryan: Ugh
- 25:09Kearns: wouldn't mind getting rid of his
- 25:10Jon: Nej
- 25:11Kearns: Two of his movies are the same movie, and then, uh, Nope was really
- 25:15enjoyable, but also not wonderful
- 25:20Ryan: You know what?
- 25:21Jon: Nope i-, Nope is my favorite.
- 25:23Ryan: I'm slash.
- 25:24Jon: Slash
- 25:24Kearns: all of
- 25:24Ryan: Yeah, I have a backup
- 25:26Kearns: in "Nope" isn't nearly as, like, overpowering
- 25:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 25:30Kearns: the movie.
- 25:30And not to be like, "Oh, you star.
- 25:35I don't like the agenda. People who are different than
- 25:36me suck." No, not like that.
- 25:36It's just that when you're watching a horror movie and there's very clear
- 25:39racial agenda involved in it with a not so hidden message about it, which is fine.
- 25:47I don't disagree with the message, it's just I-- it
- 25:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 25:53You prefer subtlety
- 25:54Kearns: it.
- 25:55Yeah, I do.
- 25:56I like
- 25:57Jon: Yeah.
- 25:57Kearns: me work for it a little bit, to be
- 25:58Jon: Yeah.
- 25:59Yeah.
- 26:01All right.
- 26:01Movie number two.
- 26:02Let's see if you guys are thinking anything close to where this is going.
- 26:07Movie number two is Fright Night,
- 26:10Ryan: Oh,
- 26:10Jon: one of our early shows
- 26:13Kearns: maybe it is P word.
- 26:18Am I gonna outright guess it?
- 26:19I don't know.
- 26:21I
- 26:21Jon: Is it though?
- 26:22Kearns: though, "Get Out" is not possession.
- 26:24It's not.
- 26:25There's like body swapping, so
- 26:27Jon: Friday night really possession
- 26:30Kearns: no.
- 26:30Brian, are you gonna take this or am I gonna try it out?
- 26:32'Cause I might get it.
- 26:33Ryan: Oh, no, I'm not taking, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not taking any chances
- 26:37because I already got… I, I, I'm, I'm changing my top five right now,
- 26:40which is comedy to horror directors, and I had to get rid of Jordan Peele.
- 26:44Yeah, it was us, so why I'm, I'm working right now.
- 26:48So yes, I'm stashing Fright Night.
- 26:52Kearns: Wowzer.
- 26:54Ryan: These damn rules
- 26:55Kearns: don't know if I can get rid of Fright Night
- 26:57Jon: There are some very good reasons
- 27:00Kearns: I'm gonna stash Fright Night.
- 27:01We did this movie.
- 27:04We enjoyed this movie.
- 27:07Jon: We did.
- 27:08All right.
- 27:09Let's see what you think of movie three, which is Hellraiser
- 27:16Kearns: Oops
- 27:17Ryan: Stash.
- 27:18done now.
- 27:20Jon: Boy, Ryan, I, I hope you guess this real quick here.
- 27:25I mean, I can't take a save away, a stash away from you at this point, so you might
- 27:29as well just shoot a guess if you have one
- 27:32Kearns: That's a good point, Ryan.
- 27:33You have nothing to lose now
- 27:36Jon: You're on house money with this guess
- 27:47Ryan: Oh.
- 27:47Oh, shit.
- 27:48It's games.
- 27:50puzzles.
- 27:50It's puzzle games, making the wish.
- 27:52You open the box, you play the rules
- 27:56Kearns: get it?
- 27:56Did he get it, John?
- 27:58Jon: No.
- 27:59Kearns: Aw.
- 28:01Ryan: though
- 28:01Kearns: like that in Fright Night, though
- 28:03Jon: Nope.
- 28:05There's not a lot of that in Get Out either
- 28:09Kearns: Get Out has the people, the people getting swapped.
- 28:13Jon: Yeah
- 28:13Kearns: then in Fright Night,
- 28:16Ryan: Hypnosis?
- 28:18Kearns: gimps?
- 28:18What, like in Fright Night, what is it that he does?
- 28:22He d- well, he does charm people.
- 28:25I'm not
- 28:26Jon: You gu- you guys,
- 28:27Kearns: guess
- 28:28Jon: yeah, you guys are nowhere near
- 28:31Kearns: Okay, we're gonna, we're gonna just keep rolling along.
- 28:33I'm gonna have to s- how do I slash Hellraiser?
- 28:38I only have two left, and we have, like, s- what, five movies left?
- 28:42Jon: Five after this.
- 28:42Yep, and I know where it goes.
- 28:44It's gonna get real rough
- 28:46Kearns: Yeah, I'm gonna have to slash Hellraiser.
- 28:47I like Hellraiser, but I'm not like you guys.
- 28:50I don't like, like Hellraiser.
- 28:55Jon: All right.
- 28:57Number four, which unless Ryan guesses right, he has to
- 29:01slash, is House of 1000 Corpses
- 29:04Kearns: That's an easy slash
- 29:05Ryan: That's-- yeah, that's a slash.
- 29:07I
- 29:08Kearns: I hate Rob Zombie
- 29:10Ryan: I just…
- 29:11Kearns: anyway
- 29:12Ryan: Halloween, I'll have a flag for Halloween, but everything else I can't.
- 29:17I, I-- I'm-- Lore's a Salem
- 29:20Jon: Uh,
- 29:20Ryan: Well, does it now?
- 29:22Jon: uh, they all sort of
- 29:26fall short.
- 29:28Like they have things that almost work, but ultimately he falls short every time.
- 29:35I think,
- 29:36Kearns: Hands
- 29:36Jon: Devil's Rejects is as close as he got for me
- 29:39Kearns: And that one I, I tried to walk out of, but I was there with
- 29:41a friend, so I had to, to it out.
- 29:46Devil's Rejects
- 29:47Ryan: Are these,
- 29:47Kearns: it
- 29:47Ryan: are these career changers?
- 29:51Jon: You're closer.
- 29:52You're closer.
- 29:57All right, next
- 29:59Kearns: start barking them out to just get your last stash.
- 30:03Ryan: He gave me the
- 30:04Jon: Number five,
- 30:05Kearns: stash
- 30:06Jon: of the Living Dead
- 30:10Kearns: Absolutely stashing Night of the Living Dead
- 30:13Jon: Good gosh, Ryan.
- 30:15Kearns: It sucks, buddy.
- 30:17Jon: Sorry, man
- 30:17Kearns: never watch this again
- 30:20Jon: Or Annie Romero.
- 30:21Ryan: a lie.
- 30:22Kearns: Or
- 30:23Jon: Or A- Annie Romero, you, you have to send that Day of the Dead set back.
- 30:28Ryan: Yeah,
- 30:29Jon: doesn't exist anymore.
- 30:30Ryan: That's not happening
- 30:31Kearns: we actually had to not watch these until we somehow
- 30:34made it right on another game?
- 30:37That'd be kinda cool.
- 30:38Ryan: Yeah, don't do that.
- 30:39Don't
- 30:39Kearns: No, we
- 30:40Ryan: don't, don't do that.
- 30:41Kearns: that
- 30:41Ryan: I got a lot I gotta watch here, man.
- 30:44Jon: Oh, not Night of Living Dead 'cause it doesn't exist in your world anymore
- 30:48Kearns: not gonna happen for you
- 30:49Ryan: Hey, listen, time travel
- 30:51Jon: this is gonna get more painful for him too.
- 30:55All right, next movie.
- 30:57Kearns: Oh, they have one left
- 30:58Jon: Texas Chainsaw Massacre
- 31:00Kearns: Ooh, this
- 31:01Ryan: Harris
- 31:02Kearns: This one's bait.
- 31:03I think I already slashed this once
- 31:05Jon: I think you may have
- 31:06Ryan: she did
- 31:07Kearns: so I'm gonna have to do it again just because it's the least risky.
- 31:11But I love this movie.
- 31:13fact that John does this to us is torturous
- 31:17Jon: Well, do you have a guess at the, at the theme?
- 31:20Kearns: Nope.
- 31:21I'm not losing
- 31:22Jon: I said,
- 31:23Kearns: buddy.
- 31:24Jon: I say, I said bull.
- 31:26Bull.
- 31:27Ryan: Well, oh, no, I, I'm trying.
- 31:29I'm trying to think, like, 'cause you said career change, but I can't, like
- 31:34Jon: I mean, your, y- y- your career changes in the, you are at least
- 31:40on the right side of the camera now
- 31:43Ryan: Oh, um, with other motifs, other careers, musicians,
- 31:50Kearns: you're not
- 31:50Ryan: comedies.
- 31:51Kearns: your stash
- 31:51Ryan: Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
- 31:54Don't you s- don't you start.
- 31:56Don't you
- 31:56Jon: not you.
- 31:58Ryan: Don't
- 31:58Jon: You're s- so, so close.
- 32:01Oh, well, next one.
- 32:03Last house on the left
- 32:05Kearns: Ooh
- 32:08Jon: Oh, is this eight?
- 32:09Kearns: one, is it?
- 32:11We have
- 32:11Jon: No, there, I believe there's one more.
- 32:14Yes, one more.
- 32:16Kearns: Una más
- 32:16Jon: Last house on the left.
- 32:18Sorry, Ryan
- 32:22Ryan: There's gotta be a way to reset this damn universe
- 32:25Jon: There go, there goes, there goes
- 32:28Kearns: probably with
- 32:29Jon: the in…
- 32:30Ryan: He
- 32:31Jon: Every, every single Wes Craven movie is gone for you now
- 32:38Kearns: We should do that every season when it resets
- 32:40Ryan: Thank you.
- 32:40Jon: Yeah, we might have to, 'cause Ryan's not gonna have
- 32:43any of his favorite things left
- 32:45Kearns: Nope,
- 32:45Ryan: to God, you put John Carpenter at the end.
- 32:49Don't you do it.
- 32:50Don't you-
- 32:52Kearns: believe this movie had a theatrical release.
- 32:54Ryan: Not that big.
- 32:56Not that big though, but
- 32:57Kearns: No, I
- 32:58Jon: It's just like
- 32:58Kearns: the rumors got out
- 32:59Jon: Is this a slash for you too, Kearns?
- 33:02Kearns: Yeah, I gotta slash it 'cause
- 33:05see what you got
- 33:06Ryan: this is one of the
- 33:07Jon: All right
- 33:07Ryan: a while
- 33:10Jon: I mean, you haven't had to make a decision in, like, five movies, man.
- 33:13Kearns: Yeah, it's
- 33:14Ryan: I know that's, that's, that's the problem.
- 33:17The problem.
- 33:18I, I
- 33:19Jon: Last one.
- 33:21Sorry, Ryan.
- 33:23Kearns: Nice.
- 33:24I made the right choice here.
- 33:26Stash, please.
- 33:27All right, so what's going on
- 33:29Ryan: Directors who retired
- 33:32Kearns: Right?
- 33:33is
- 33:34Jon: have
- 33:34Kearns: too though, but at least like… Yeah, I guess they all
- 33:37kind of have that theme anyway
- 33:38Jon: You got, so close there eventually.
- 33:42These are directorial debuts
- 33:45Kearns: 好。
- 33:46Ryan: Oh, sh- Nikes
- 33:49Kearns: r- it was too simple.
- 33:51Jon: Yep, it was right there the whole time
- 33:53Kearns: Yeah, that one was teed up for you
- 33:57Jon: Was right there the whole time.
- 33:59Ryan: It's fine.
- 34:00You know what?
- 34:00I, I kept Hellraiser
- 34:02Jon: I like that one
- 34:03Kearns: It was fun to watch everybody squirm
- 34:05Jon: Yeah, I mean, you get to watch the other three Clive Barker movies
- 34:09Kearns: Yeah.
- 34:10Ryan: Nice breed
- 34:12Kearns: right
- 34:13Ryan: He didn't, direct or write, Hellraiser Two though.
- 34:16I always thought he did.
- 34:17He didn't do that.
- 34:18produced it.
- 34:19He produced.
- 34:20Jon: Lord of Illusions
- 34:21Ryan: Yeah
- 34:22Kearns: Going to get a little money to get lazy.
- 34:24Jon: There's… Mm-hmm.
- 34:25Kearns: on these
- 34:28Jon: Yep.
- 34:29Kearns: produce it.
- 34:30Jon: Yep
- 34:31Kearns: why Bear is a giant cuck in this movie.
- 34:35Let's just get right back into obsession.
- 34:37It's the most aggravating part of the movie for me is that he has every
- 34:40opportunity to talk to her, and he does this squeamish, weenie sort of,
- 34:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 34:46Mm-hmm.
- 34:49Mm-hmm.
- 34:50Kearns: it pervades his personality for so long
- 34:54Jon: Yeah, that is his personality.
- 34:56He's ineffective.
- 34:59He is largely incapable.
- 35:01I mean, you meet Nikki and she has dreams.
- 35:04She wants to write.
- 35:05She's g- you know, she's got… And Bear's just there
- 35:11Kearns: He's a lame-o.
- 35:12Ryan: He's comfortable, if you can say it
- 35:15Kearns: Yeah, that's like, that's how you describe him in being happy
- 35:18with his job and stuff like that.
- 35:20Like, he doesn't want money, he wants Nikki.
- 35:23And I agree, he's definitely comfortable there.
- 35:24But the, aspect of his personality where he can't do anything that's
- 35:27difficult or scary is s- especially as pertains to her, sucks so hard.
- 35:33Even when she's Freaky Nikki and he's trying to figure out how to deal with it,
- 35:37the way he deals with it is just awful
- 35:41Ryan: It's, he's very socially awkward, as we keep saying.
- 35:45Um, it just, he doesn't-
- 35:46Kearns: giving him outs.
- 35:47You're giving him
- 35:48Jon: Yeah.
- 35:49Ryan: Well,
- 35:49Jon: Yeah, you are
- 35:50Ryan: not, it's
- 35:51Kearns: like it.
- 35:51Ryan: not… Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 35:54He's definitely not a nice guy.
- 35:55I f- this is the first time watching a film in a while that
- 35:59I disliked the main character.
- 36:01I don't like Bear.
- 36:03Uh, from the start, you kinda, like I- we said, you kinda feel like, "Oh, okay."
- 36:07But then once you see the cat death, the negligence,
- 36:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:14Ryan: I can say,
- 36:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:16Ryan: just making
- 36:17Jon: So
- 36:17Ryan: worse, it's just like, fuck, man.
- 36:21Jon: Yeah, and he, and I mean, how long is it from when he has the realization,
- 36:26"Okay, this is the wish. I don't even know if she actually loves me or if she
- 36:31loves me because I wished for this," to calling the company, the One Wish Willow
- 36:40company, to ask about it, to then not act on that until it gets really bad?
- 36:48Kearns: That would have definitely red flagged for me.
- 36:50Even denial wouldn't have been enough to make me ignore that.
- 36:52Ryan: Yeah
- 36:53Jon: Yeah.
- 36:53he's given outs for a while.
- 36:57even as she's getting progressively crazier and more dangerous, and
- 37:06he's clearly not comfortable with it, he's still going with it
- 37:11Kearns: Yep.
- 37:11'Cause he doesn't wanna lose it.
- 37:13Ryan: Yep
- 37:13Kearns: He didn't even see it and he's very uncomfortable with it,
- 37:16and they, they make sure to put in a scene where he's sleeping with her
- 37:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:20Kearns: "Yep, don't forget what's keeping him
- 37:21Ryan: And that
- 37:22Jon: Ja
- 37:22Ryan: that was uncomfortable too.
- 37:24Just, just uncomfortable.
- 37:26Like the whole
- 37:27Jon: Well,
- 37:27Kearns: it perfectly for that.
- 37:28Jon: yeah, I, I mean, any concept of them being sexual together is uncomfortable
- 37:37because it's not exactly consensual
- 37:41Ryan: No
- 37:42Kearns: Yeah, no.
- 37:44That
- 37:44Jon: She, she has no free will,
- 37:47Kearns: It's as much consent as
- 37:48Jon: l-
- 37:49Kearns: Roomba can give you
- 37:50Jon: limited free will, I guess, is, you know, like there are flashes where
- 37:56she's still herself, but, you know, for the most part, she's just obsessed.
- 38:01She's…
- 38:03Her whole life… I mean, to the point where you get later in the movie and when
- 38:07she's fully, fully under the wish, when he, when Bear leaves to go to work, and
- 38:13he comes back and she is exactly where she was when he left, having wet herself
- 38:21and vomited and just stuck in that spot.
- 38:25Like her, her being stopped existing for the hours that he was at work
- 38:31Kearns: Right, 'cause he told her to stay there.
- 38:33Jon: Yeah
- 38:33Kearns: literally said to her, "Stay right there," and she, she took that seriously.
- 38:38uh, it makes me wonder though too, because he gives her directives
- 38:41throughout the movie, she
- 38:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 38:43Kearns: them nearly as literally as that.
- 38:45So that kind of bugged me a little bit as far as continuity is concerned,
- 38:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 38:49Well, yeah, I mean, there's that, but It does really more to me feel like
- 38:54it's, she's at, by that point she can't function without him being around
- 39:01Kearns: Yeah.
- 39:02Ryan: feel like that, that's as it continues, I'm presuming.
- 39:05It just gets worse and worse, and it just multiplies.
- 39:09And I feel like,
- 39:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:11Ryan: like she's in-- Or as, um, he said, she's in this purgatory.
- 39:16as the wish is continuing, she's just gonna be out of
- 39:19existence, I feel, eventually.
- 39:22Kearns: Yeah,
- 39:22Ryan: If that makes sense, like just
- 39:25Jon: mean
- 39:25Kearns: she's slowly eroding?
- 39:28Jon: Well, yeah, I mean, I think it's at that point that you really
- 39:32recognize how poorly this is gonna end for everybody involved.
- 39:39There's n- there's no getting out from there, you know?
- 39:43Ryan: ending
- 39:44Kearns: though every wish is necessarily evil.
- 39:46When Ian wishes for a billion dollars and it starts falling
- 39:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:50Kearns: um, it doesn't seem as though, like, that was meant to be malicious
- 39:53Jon: So that, that's something that I've seen Curry Barker say, is that
- 39:58One Wish Willow is not implicitly evil.
- 40:02It's that how poorly Bear worded his wish
- 40:07Kearns: Yeah.
- 40:08Good point.
- 40:10he screws it up big time.
- 40:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:12Kearns: that annoys me the most about him that he has an opportunity, and
- 40:17I think they did this on purpose.
- 40:18In the car prior to snapping that one wish willow, pres- asks
- 40:23him, "Do you like me?" And it
- 40:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:27Mm-hmm.
- 40:29Ryan: Yeah.
- 40:30Kearns: there
- 40:30Ryan: That
- 40:30Jon: And, and
- 40:31Ryan: I think
- 40:32Jon: yeah, and she-
- 40:34Kearns: for it to be too
- 40:35Jon: Uh, like sh- I think she know.
- 40:36I mean, when you find out later on that she and Ian have been doing it
- 40:42off and on for a couple years, you sort of start to wonder how much
- 40:46else was going on with her and Ian.
- 40:49Did, like, did Ian tell her?
- 40:51Like, is she expecting this at some point?
- 40:55Ryan: Definitely did.
- 40:55Kearns: like that kind
- 40:56Ryan: Yeah
- 40:57Jon: And like, she, she gives him a couple of signals there that like, "Go
- 41:03ahead and shoot your shot, man." She's like, "Well, if there was someone I
- 41:08liked, nobody would know." You know, like that sort, that's sort of that coy
- 41:14po- maybe coy, maybe, you know, just directed disinterest, but… And then,
- 41:21you know, straight out, "Do you like me?"
- 41:23And he doesn't take either opportunity
- 41:26Ryan: But she pushes Sarah
- 41:28Kearns: that nice guys too never pick up on
- 41:30Ryan: But she pushes Sarah on him though in that scene too, 'cause she says
- 41:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 41:38Mm-hmm.
- 41:40Sarah definitely does like him
- 41:42Kearns: Yeah, and it's, uh, keeping Nikki from sort of getting there too maybe.
- 41:47Like, "I can't do that.
- 41:48My friend would be mad
- 41:49Jon: Mm-hmm,
- 41:50Kearns: thing.
- 41:50Jon: mm-hmm.
- 41:51Kearns: characters are tangled in a weird way
- 41:53Jon: but, Sarah's also very well aware of how Bear feels about Nikki too.
- 41:59So like I don't… I mean, I'm sure she would've been hurt by that, but I think
- 42:07she kinda would've been understanding that, hey, this is just what it is.
- 42:12This was what he wanted, not he didn't want me, which is
- 42:16what Bear can't get past.
- 42:17Bear can't get past that, well, maybe she doesn't like me, and
- 42:21then, you know, he puts it in a situation where she can't not like him
- 42:25Kearns: That makes sense.
- 42:27All right.
- 42:28this kind of pushes Nikki into the sympathetic character area
- 42:31too, 'cause we don't care about Bear, we don't care about Ian.
- 42:35Kinda care about Sarah.
- 42:36She's probably my
- 42:36Jon: I cared about, I liked Sarah too.
- 42:38Yeah, I liked Sarah a lot.
- 42:40Kearns: mean,
- 42:40Jon: She's
- 42:41Kearns: be a good time to bring up the NC-17 aspect.
- 42:43We definitely watched the NC-17 version of this
- 42:45Ryan: Yeah, we did
- 42:47Kearns: if you guys aren't aware that there are two versions, well, you'll find
- 42:50out if you watch what happens to Sarah
- 42:53Ryan: That, that brick?
- 42:54Jon: Oof.
- 42:57Kearns: It's the brick is part of it, but
- 42:59Ryan: I
- 42:59Kearns: it's the 15 smashes of her face into the steering wheel to finish her off
- 43:04Jon: Uh-huh.
- 43:05Ryan: keeper.
- 43:06I'm ju-
- 43:07Kearns: That's the
- 43:08Jon: Make, make, making her look like what really doubled for her
- 43:13in that scene, which is a sex doll
- 43:17Kearns: Oh, that makes sense.
- 43:19Jon: So by the,
- 43:20Kearns: the bass
- 43:21Jon: yeah, by the end, that's really what the face looks like
- 43:25is a deflated sex doll head.
- 43:30And like, again, a-
- 43:31Kearns: with that
- 43:34Jon: Now it becomes an issue for Bear to actually do something, but, you know, he
- 43:39had previously called one Wish Willow and had been told, you know, death or, you
- 43:46know, contradict the wish, but it's death.
- 43:48This is till death.
- 43:50Kearns: very interesting too, 'cause he was like, he was, he- I don't think he
- 43:52had an easy time processing any of this
- 43:55Jon: No.
- 43:56No
- 43:58Kearns: I guess it's not that easy to process either, but
- 44:01Ryan: I mean, when you think something's not gonna happen and it does, I mean
- 44:07It's a curveball,
- 44:09Kearns: Choo,
- 44:09Ryan: especially when it's everything you want in every wrong possible way
- 44:14Kearns: Before we
- 44:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:14Kearns: too far into the One Wish Willow though, I want to wrap up Nikki.
- 44:17we realize that she's in there earlier than the bed scene.
- 44:22Jon: Yeah.
- 44:22Kearns: of her earlier
- 44:23Ryan: Yes
- 44:24Kearns: well,
- 44:25Jon: There's one in…
- 44:26Kearns: she's in pain
- 44:28Jon: And there's one in the restaurant when he asks her about
- 44:31whether her dad really has cancer, and, supposedly when she says no,
- 44:36that's real Nikki coming through
- 44:39Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 44:39Kearns: Ooh, I didn't pick up on that.
- 44:41That's a good one.
- 44:42Jon: But,
- 44:44Kearns: That
- 44:44Jon: you know, there's
- 44:45Ryan: Is,
- 44:45Kearns: me PTSD
- 44:47Ryan: with the…
- 44:48Kearns: making a scene.
- 44:49Ryan: that.
- 44:50Okay.
- 44:51That's
- 44:51Jon: Yep.
- 44:52Ryan: scene, right?
- 44:53Kearns: that.
- 44:54No.
- 44:55Jon: No
- 44:56Ryan: That's later
- 44:57Kearns: That's different.
- 44:58This isn't violent.
- 44:58All the stuff she does that's not violent is the stuff that freaked me out
- 45:02Jon: Yeah.
- 45:04Yeah, she, she, the, her nonviolent reactions are way
- 45:09worse than her, the violence
- 45:12Kearns: Hyper needy, clingy thing
- 45:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:14Kearns: is really super scary.
- 45:17Super scary
- 45:19Jon: Yeah
- 45:19Ryan: I never experienced that, so I mean, like, the reality of seeing
- 45:22it from, like, an outsider's point of view, the reality is scary.
- 45:27But I feel like if you were a part of it, you're gonna have some PTSD moments.
- 45:32Sorry, guys.
- 45:33Kearns: run.
- 45:34it's just, it's-- they, she tapped into something that a lot of people
- 45:38will identify with from both sides.
- 45:40I'm sure there are people who when they were younger, they behaved that way with
- 45:43a few p- different people too, and they look back and they're cringey, sort of
- 45:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:49Kearns: back on it.
- 45:50But she nails that, and then they m- when they blend that into the weird, and then
- 45:55they blend the weird into the psychotic, that's kinda where this movie shines.
- 45:59And Nikki, the actress who plays Nikki, without her, I don't
- 46:02think you pull any of that off
- 46:04Jon: No, she, uh, she's incredible in this role.
- 46:09Indy Nevrett
- 46:10Ryan: Recently?
- 46:11Kearns: Amber.
- 46:11Ryan: Okay
- 46:12Jon: Indie, yeah.
- 46:13Kearns: cool name
- 46:15Jon: Mm-hmm
- 46:17Ryan: Dun
- 46:18Jon: Yeah, she, it, she, she's really good in this.
- 46:22She's probably the strongest performance, probably, not even probably, easily
- 46:29the strongest performance in this
- 46:31Kearns: I don't know.
- 46:32Andy Richter did a pretty good job.
- 46:35Ryan: Was he the center of the universe?
- 46:37Kearns: Uh, he was the center
- 46:39Jon: So,
- 46:39Kearns: record store
- 46:41Jon: so that was supposed to be played by the guy who actually owns the music
- 46:46store, but he didn't wanna say the curse and asked if they could change
- 46:51the line, and Curry Barker told him no.
- 46:54So they had to cast an actual actor
- 46:58Kearns: What was the curse?
- 46:59The specific curse
- 47:00Jon: I don't remember what it was, but it's just the guy, I guess, I guess, I
- 47:05guess he's the guy who doesn't curse, so
- 47:07Kearns: Didn't remember it.
- 47:08Oh, dude,
- 47:09Ryan: That's understandable
- 47:11Jon: people who don't curse bother me
- 47:13Ryan: That
- 47:13Kearns: Yes, it's a word,
- 47:15Ryan: I, it is.
- 47:16It's, you
- 47:17Jon: Like
- 47:17Kearns: long
- 47:18Jon: if you
- 47:18Kearns: of the Necro Comic-Con,
- 47:20Ryan: necro.
- 47:20Hey, hey, don't mess with the necro Comic Con.
- 47:23Kearns: I stole it from you.
- 47:24Copyright.
- 47:24Ryan: It's like noir.
- 47:26Kearns: No.
- 47:27Yeah, no, that's just, that's
- 47:28Ryan: Noir.
- 47:28Noir.
- 47:29Kearns: You're gonna keep that forever.
- 47:30Ryan: Noir.
- 47:31Jon: No.
- 47:31No
- 47:32Kearns: It's like Christopher Walken adjacent, but not cool.
- 47:36Jon: And it's, it's a, it's also a little Bruce Lee too.
- 47:40Kearns: The wild.
- 47:41Jon: "Nyah.
- 47:41Ryan: Wah.
- 47:42Jon: Nyah."
- 47:42Kearns: Um,
- 47:43Ryan: No wah
- 47:43Kearns: it's a good opportunity for us to segue into like… 'Cause the
- 47:46most interesting part of the movie is the one-wish Willow, 'cause that's
- 47:49the stuff he can keep talking about.
- 47:52realize that Bare goes and buys two more
- 47:56Ryan: Yes.
- 47:56Jon: he buys the last two
- 47:58Ryan: Yep
- 47:58Kearns: He gets the last two, which is smart.
- 48:00But they're still, the price point of them, by the way, is
- 48:02hilarious that they're just out there for $6.99 or something.
- 48:06He gets the
- 48:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:07Kearns: two.
- 48:08Ian obviously wastes one because he's dumbass.
- 48:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:11Well, I mean, he, he, yeah, he, he wastes it because he does… Like,
- 48:16how ridiculous is this story that Bear is coming to him with after, you
- 48:21know, however much time has elapsed?
- 48:23Yeah, covered in blood and like
- 48:26Kearns: talk to him a little bit more closely than just being like,
- 48:28"Dude, what's wrong?" sort of thing.
- 48:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:32Kearns: I would snap the thing and be like, "I wish for your wish to
- 48:34not be a wish anymore." And then, you know, it wouldn't hurt anything.
- 48:40Jon: I don't know.
- 48:41I, might snap it and wish that the cops were here to handle this situation
- 48:46Kearns: That would be hilarious.
- 48:48I wonder what happened when they went to his house eventually and saw the
- 48:52billion dollars in his living room.
- 48:53Like, how do you even explain that?
- 48:57There's no way to explain
- 48:58Jon: I mean, there, are two houses that things are gonna
- 49:01be very difficult to explain in
- 49:04Kearns: Yeah, you'd have to burn most of that because you can't use it.
- 49:07You'd have to launder it.
- 49:09The government would wonder where you got a billion dollars
- 49:13Jon: Yeah.
- 49:14Yeah.
- 49:14Ryan: Yeah.
- 49:16Kearns: Yeah, that's
- 49:17Jon: I w-
- 49:18Kearns: could
- 49:18Jon: I wished
- 49:19Kearns: could that one.
- 49:23Jon: The tax complications around wishing for a billion dollars and receiving it.
- 49:29Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 49:30Jon: That's, yeah, that's a
- 49:32Kearns: Give me a multinational conglomerate corporation that
- 49:35brings in… Like, you'd have to, like, really word it properly.
- 49:39Jon: X free billion.
- 49:40Kearns: But the One Wish Willow could pull it off if you worded it properly.
- 49:43That's
- 49:44Jon: Yeah.
- 49:45Yep.
- 49:45Kearns: outright
- 49:46Jon: Yep
- 49:47Kearns: Um, One Wish Willow creeps me out for a couple reasons.
- 49:50Wish Willow, as we already said, is not inherently evil.
- 49:53The owner of the shop that sells them is fully aware of what they do.
- 49:59Used that wish, and he still works in his shop, which is another interesting thing.
- 50:02So he didn't wish for grand wealth or anything.
- 50:04I wonder what he wished for.
- 50:05But he's also very cavalier about what
- 50:08Jon: Yeah
- 50:09Kearns: Bear's problem is, looks like a very significant one,
- 50:12and he's very cavalier about it.
- 50:14He's like, "Wow, what'd you wish for?" And
- 50:15Jon: Yeah.
- 50:16Kearns: the scary voice when he calls the One Wish Willow hotline, and also
- 50:21Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:21Kearns: screaming in the background
- 50:23Jon: Mm-hmm
- 50:23Kearns: you that that's not in our plane of existence
- 50:26Ryan: No
- 50:26Kearns: out to.
- 50:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:28Kearns: kinda
- 50:28Jon: And that, and that voice on the phone is Curry Barker
- 50:33Kearns: Which is kind of neat.
- 50:35That is kind of neat.
- 50:37So what about the, what is the One Wish Willow, and do you think it
- 50:40will spur on a sequel to this film?
- 50:44Ryan: It,
- 50:45Jon: it could.
- 50:46Ryan: can
- 50:46Jon: It won't be, his next movie.
- 50:49his next movie, I don't remember what it's gonna be called, but,
- 50:53Ryan: ghosts
- 50:54Jon: okay, yeah, and it's gonna be in this universe,
- 50:58Ryan: Ooh
- 50:58Kearns: Okay
- 50:59Jon: but it's not because of… I guess there's going to be like a part in
- 51:04that where the TV is on and there's a news report about the end of Obsession
- 51:11Ryan: Okay.
- 51:13cool
- 51:13Kearns: actually might be helpful.
- 51:14I'd like to know a little bit more about h- what happens to Nikki after they
- 51:18find the many murders that have taken
- 51:21Ryan: maybe an
- 51:22Jon: Well,
- 51:22Ryan: trilogy or a sequel.
- 51:24Jon: maybe.
- 51:26Ryan: I know he's
- 51:26Jon: Maybe
- 51:27Ryan: reboot too.
- 51:30You didn't hear about that?
- 51:31Jon: What's he rebooting?
- 51:33Ryan: It was on our, uh, Slasher Stash tonight.
- 51:37Texas Chainsaw Massacre
- 51:40Kearns: Don't do
- 51:41Jon: I don't know if… Yeah, I don't, I don't think, I
- 51:43don't want him to do that yet
- 51:45Ryan: He's had talks, he's had interest, and he wants to,
- 51:48Kearns: Yeah.
- 51:49Ryan: I mean
- 51:49Kearns: a good idea.
- 51:50No,
- 51:51Jon: Yeah, let,
- 51:51Kearns: Every
- 51:52Jon: let,
- 51:52Kearns: do that, it's like, eh
- 51:54Jon: yeah.
- 51:54Let, let's, let's build your own stuff first and go from there.
- 51:59He, 'cause he's really
- 52:01Kearns: We're moving away from them finally too.
- 52:03Sorry to
- 52:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 52:04Kearns: and I'd like to keep moving away from them
- 52:06Jon: Yeah.
- 52:07But Curry Barker h- with Obsession has really positioned himself
- 52:13to do what he wants to do and do original things for a while now.
- 52:19With how successful this is, $800,000 budget.
- 52:23the
- 52:24Kearns: That's
- 52:24Jon: film-- The company bought it for 15 million.
- 52:27it's made more than Sinners now.
- 52:29It's over $250
- 52:36million in the US.
- 52:36Like, so he's put himself immediately in a spot where he doesn't have to do
- 52:39Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and he doesn't have to do somebody else's property.
- 52:45I would be more interested in him going back to his own shorts
- 52:49and expanding those than to see him reboot an existing property.
- 52:53Ryan: I agree with that,
- 52:54Jon: I don't know if either of you guys watched any of his
- 52:57other stuff, any of the shorts.
- 52:59I watched two of them today.
- 53:02The Chair I really, really liked.
- 53:04I would definitely recommend hopping on YouTube and watching The Chair.
- 53:09The other one, Milk and Cereal, I didn't like as much.
- 53:12it's found footage, so that's a strike against it.
- 53:15I, you know, found footage is a tough sell for me.
- 53:18his creative partner is Cooper Tomlinson, who plays Ian, and you can see Tomlinson's
- 53:26a little limited as an actor still.
- 53:28I think he can grow into something, and Curry Barker's not a particularly good
- 53:34actor either, and they're the two stars of Milk and Cereal, and I think that's
- 53:40kind of another way it falls flat for me is they're just not great at it.
- 53:47Ryan: The costume's
- 53:47Jon: story's,
- 53:48Kearns: enough
- 53:48Jon: the story, the story's interesting.
- 53:50There's a lot of interesting things around Milk and Cereal.
- 53:53I'd, like I, I'd be interested in seeing him redo that with, you know,
- 53:59the level cast he had f- for Obsession.
- 54:03Kearns: Yeah.
- 54:05Fair enough
- 54:06Ryan: His costume was cool though, the main killer, uh, wears.
- 54:10From
- 54:10Jon: Yeah
- 54:11Ryan: 'cause I put it on my list to watch 'cause the, the mask and the outfit got
- 54:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 54:17I, I would, I would definitely do the chair first.
- 54:20The chair is, to me, significantly better.
- 54:24It's scarier.
- 54:25It's…
- 54:26Kearns: is good
- 54:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 54:28Mm-hmm.
- 54:29Yep
- 54:29Kearns: domicile and they make that unsafe and that,
- 54:33Jon: Yeah
- 54:33Kearns: kinda on their heels.
- 54:35So the chair, the chair is weird It's good
- 54:38Jon: It is.
- 54:39It is.
- 54:40Yeah, it probably will take a few watches to fully figure out.
- 54:46You know, there's some weird jumps in it and some stuff
- 54:48that's like, "Wait a minute.
- 54:50Kearns: Yeah, don't,
- 54:51Jon: Wait, w-
- 54:51Kearns: up, like, all the beats and get explanations.
- 54:54Watch it and figure it out for yourself.
- 54:56That's
- 54:56Jon: Yeah.
- 54:57Yeah.
- 54:58Ryan: me and my
- 54:58Jon: Definitely.
- 54:59Ryan: it
- 55:01Jon: Definitely.
- 55:02Definitely
- 55:03Kearns: I give one and a half stars to your mustache.
- 55:05Ryan: a lie, you know it.
- 55:07a lie
- 55:07Jon: So do you wa- do you wanna, do you wanna, do you wanna quickly cover the end
- 55:13of Obsession before we jump to reviews?
- 55:15Ryan: Yes.
- 55:16Kearns: bottom of Mr. Yeah, we can cover the end of the movie.
- 55:18Let's do it, John
- 55:21Jon: So,
- 55:23Kearns: Damn it
- 55:23Jon: he comes back, he comes back home with his one remaining one wish willow
- 55:28that he gives to Nikki, and Nikki's really freaking out still, and it's really bad.
- 55:33She's full freaky Nikki now.
- 55:35And Bear decides finally there's one way, one real way to end
- 55:42this, and he goes in the bathroom and, you know, he drops the…
- 55:48He puts down his bottle of Oxys.
- 55:51Kearns: Hmm.
- 55:51Jon: But e- even in that, he's unsure and incapable because he almost
- 55:59immediately tries to make himself vomit
- 56:02Kearns: Right.
- 56:02Well, he also attempted a much more grisly way to do it earlier with
- 56:06Jon: Yeah.
- 56:06Kearns: and you
- 56:07Jon: Yeah.
- 56:07Kearns: then he's like, "I'm not doing that." And then he
- 56:09goes for the easier route and
- 56:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 56:11Kearns: tries to puke and then snaps out of it
- 56:14Jon: Yep.
- 56:15Well, yeah, snaps out of it.
- 56:17Ryan: out of it
- 56:19Jon: Because Nicky has broken the last one wish willow.
- 56:24And I mean, really at the end of the… It's not the wish he wanted her to
- 56:28make, but it's the wish that would make this all make sense for both of them.
- 56:33She wishes for him to feel the same way about her,
- 56:37Kearns: And they probably
- 56:37Jon: and he come-
- 56:38Kearns: a way to go on with life that way.
- 56:42Jon: Well, I mean, you're already on double murder at that point.
- 56:45Kearns: Oh yeah,
- 56:45Jon: You're also, you're also on a double murder at that point
- 56:48that someone's gotta go down for
- 56:50Kearns: Yeah, and they're gonna go to
- 56:52Ryan: Well, um
- 56:53Jon: because they, because they've al- she's also offed Ian by now too.
- 56:57Kearns: In their house, in their
- 56:59Jon: In the house, yeah.
- 57:00Kearns: Yeah
- 57:00Jon: there's two bodies, two, two bodies and a soon-to-be overdosed Bear because he
- 57:08did not successfully make himself vomit, and they, they have one kiss together
- 57:14before, uh, as completely obsessed with one another before Bear falls and dies.
- 57:20And
- 57:21Kearns: his
- 57:21Jon: in his death
- 57:23Ryan: She wakes up
- 57:25Jon: She wakes up.
- 57:26Kearns: And will
- 57:27Jon: To the horror,
- 57:28Kearns: of the consequences.
- 57:29Jon: to the horror
- 57:31Kearns: a story that Bear did all of it and then took the easy way out.
- 57:35She might get away with that, but there's so many people who will attest
- 57:38to seeing her act like a psychopath
- 57:42Ryan: Yeah
- 57:42Kearns: like in the bar and things like
- 57:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 57:45Ryan: case is against Mary
- 57:46Jon: she, yeah, she had the, the bashing her head at the
- 57:49party, you know, a whole bunch.
- 57:52You know, she, she could, she could go that route with it.
- 57:56She could definitely… There's that, you know, the insanity plea
- 58:00is also probably on the table.
- 58:04I would, I would ima- I don't know what level of her becomes conscious
- 58:08of how she got to that point.
- 58:11But, you know, if you, if you have a good defense attorney, maybe
- 58:14they introduce a One Wish Willow,
- 58:17Kearns: Maybe.
- 58:18Jon: you know.
- 58:18And hey, judge snap and like whatever, and make somebody in the courtroom that way
- 58:27Kearns: It should work.
- 58:29Ryan: work
- 58:29Kearns: she's,
- 58:30Jon: her to, yeah, she's gonna need a really good attorney
- 58:34Kearns: Bear really screwed her over is the moral of the story here, kids
- 58:39Ryan: Yeah, they did.
- 58:40There's,
- 58:40Jon: Yep
- 58:41Ryan: a happy ending, and mean, but i- it's a movie that I feel we need these
- 58:48movies in circulation, those movies where it's like, "Ah, man, this is a
- 58:53rough ending," but it, like, brings the audience to a realization that
- 58:57life's not always, you know, happy.
- 58:59S- you know, there's always not the good ending.
- 59:03Kearns: a way
- 59:03Ryan: Yeah.
- 59:05Life's a box of chocolates
- 59:06Jon: No
- 59:06Kearns: Yeah.
- 59:07Let's get some reviews, guys
- 59:09Jon: Yeah, let's do it.
- 59:10Uh, so we'll start out, Rotten Tomatoes, 94% critics, 94% audience
- 59:18Kearns: About right
- 59:19Ryan: Very high
- 59:20Jon: Yep.
- 59:20Kearns: Yeah,
- 59:21Jon: Yep.
- 59:21so we'll start where we always start with five stars.
- 59:24Five stars for Obsession.
- 59:26Welp, Barker is now on my list of director-screenwriters to watch.
- 59:32I'm a horror buff and had low expectations.
- 59:36I was so wrong.
- 59:37This was one of the more viscerally intense horror movies that challenged
- 59:42what I expected at every turn.
- 59:45It's unpredictable, strangely funny at times, and unusually
- 59:50frightening at moments where most other movies would mail it in.
- 59:54I put this in my top 10 all time, maybe higher.
- 1:00:00I'm not even kidding
- 1:00:01Kearns: I mean, this resonated with people,
- 1:00:03Ryan: Yeah, that's
- 1:00:04Kearns: that's because of the young relationship stuff,
- 1:00:06people remembering their young relationships and people in them
- 1:00:11Jon: Yep, yep.
- 1:00:12And I'll, talk a little more about that when we get to my opinion,
- 1:00:16but I also have three low reviews.
- 1:00:19I, I usually only do two, but I found a one star that I had to include.
- 1:00:24One star for Obsession?
- 1:00:29"I wasn't informed that I need to bring my ID to watch the movie.
- 1:00:33The staff scanned my ticket prior to asking for it, so I wasn't able to get
- 1:00:38a refund or an exchange for my tickets.
- 1:00:41I wasted $31 for nothing."
- 1:00:44Ryan: $31
- 1:00:44Kearns: What the hell?
- 1:00:45That's one of those I'm leaving here with
- 1:00:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:47Kearns: moments, like
- 1:00:48Ryan: IMAX
- 1:00:49Kearns: style.
- 1:00:49If they did that to me, you're-- I'm going to the concession stand and
- 1:00:53grabbing 12 boxes of candy and leaving
- 1:00:56Jon: This, this, this would be my falling down moment
- 1:00:59Kearns: Yep.
- 1:01:00Nope, that ain't happening.
- 1:01:01I'm not walking out of a theater with that.
- 1:01:03Nope
- 1:01:05Jon: I'm also not going on Rotten Tomatoes and reviewing the movie
- 1:01:09Kearns: Yeah, fair
- 1:01:10Ryan: Yeah, true
- 1:01:13Kearns: Yeah,
- 1:01:13Jon: All right
- 1:01:14Kearns: Well, it
- 1:01:15Ryan: How is that dialogue?
- 1:01:15Kearns: operating with a full deck either,
- 1:01:17Jon: No.
- 1:01:18I mean, listen, they, he- it's pretty, should be pretty standard to understand
- 1:01:24if you look like you're a certain age, you should bring your ID when you're gonna
- 1:01:29do things that require age verification.
- 1:01:33I don't have to worry about these things anymore
- 1:01:35Kearns: No, nor do I. about you,
- 1:01:38Jon: Nor Bull doesn't have to.
- 1:01:40Not, especially not when he's Bull.
- 1:01:45Kearns: Yeah, just bring it over the top, buddy.
- 1:01:47Ryan: ready.
- 1:01:48Where's my hat?
- 1:01:49Kearns: Let's hear
- 1:01:49Jon: All right.
- 1:01:50Yes, one star.
- 1:01:52"I cannot remember the last time I watched such a predictable movie.
- 1:01:57Absolute bore.
- 1:02:00I don't understand why anyone would think this was good.
- 1:02:03Zero twists, nothing unique, and ridiculously stupid main plot point.
- 1:02:10Did you spend so little on the movie because you had to use most of the budget
- 1:02:14to pay for posi- for positive reviews?
- 1:02:18Acting was great though."
- 1:02:20Kearns: I mean, so yeah, that's a good thing to end on
- 1:02:22Ryan: で。
- 1:02:23Kearns: because it doesn't have to have a twist.
- 1:02:24It do- and that's what, like, M. Night Shyamalan's career
- 1:02:27Jon: No.
- 1:02:28Kearns: You don't have
- 1:02:28Jon: No.
- 1:02:29Ryan: No
- 1:02:30Kearns: This
- 1:02:30Jon: No
- 1:02:30Kearns: thing shined in the small work
- 1:02:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:34And one la- one last, 'cause we had, we had to get the half star too.
- 1:02:38Kearns: No
- 1:02:39Jon: half a star for Obsession.
- 1:02:41Thumbs down.
- 1:02:43Kearns: Ooh
- 1:02:44Jon: another recycled storyline filled with the predictable shock moments.
- 1:02:50The actors do well performing their, their roles, so credit goes to them.
- 1:02:54I don't know where the critics are claiming this film to be
- 1:02:57a unique approach, because its substance is too predictable and
- 1:03:02rehashed from other storylines.
- 1:03:05Again, the actors do their parts very well, but I personally cannot recommend
- 1:03:10this dumpster fire waste of time and money
- 1:03:14Ryan: I mean, I understand why it's a half star.
- 1:03:16I mean, they went pretty heavy with it.
- 1:03:18A dumpster fire's a little… That's, that's over the line, sir or madam
- 1:03:22Kearns: of these, not one of these
- 1:03:23Jon: I mean, yeah.
- 1:03:27Like I, I kind, like… Uh, so we've heard what other people think
- 1:03:35Kearns: Yeah, I was gonna say, let's hear what we have to think.
- 1:03:37Jon: What do you guys have to say?
- 1:03:39Kearns: Let's go Ryan first this time
- 1:03:41Ryan: Well, I had a hard time with it 'cause originally I was
- 1:03:45going between a 3.5 to a 4, but I'm gonna stick with a 3.75.
- 1:03:51I like the movie.
- 1:03:52I like how it's filmed.
- 1:03:54I like the story.
- 1:03:55I like the acting.
- 1:03:56I love how performs Nicky.
- 1:04:00I like the actor who performs Bear, but I don't like Bear, and it's
- 1:04:05really why I'm really stuck at a 3.75.
- 1:04:08Jade really pushed me up 'cause she was like, "The story was good, the film."
- 1:04:11And I said, "Yeah, it's good, but I hate that character so much." I just…
- 1:04:15Kearns: that
- 1:04:16Ryan: I know.
- 1:04:16That's what makes, that's what makes me like, like you feel it.
- 1:04:20Jon: I,
- 1:04:20Kearns: means they did a good
- 1:04:21Jon: oh, yeah.
- 1:04:22Ryan: still,
- 1:04:23Jon: Yeah.
- 1:04:23Ryan: I'm still
- 1:04:24Jon: This, th- this is, this isn't one where you were supposed to
- 1:04:27hate, you were supposed to like him and you wound up hating him.
- 1:04:30Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:04:31Jon: are not supposed to like him
- 1:04:33Kearns: It's an inter- we gotta clip that out.
- 1:04:34I wanna see people throw hate at that on the, Instagram.
- 1:04:36There we go.
- 1:04:37Um, uh, I'm gonna push mine up to 4.25, uh, and it only drops
- 1:04:43from a 4.5 because dumb cat.
- 1:04:44They didn't need to do any of that with the cat.
- 1:04:47Uh, it, it's not a perfect movie.
- 1:04:49It's not a super deep movie.
- 1:04:51It's deep enough to make you think, though, and that's like
- 1:04:53one of my… Over-- To be over a four, I have to be thinking.
- 1:04:56just be an action dweeb thing.
- 1:04:58But it's not
- 1:04:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:00Kearns: It shines in, like I said, the small work earlier because it,
- 1:05:03they put the effort into the right parts of the movie to make it good.
- 1:05:08They
- 1:05:09Jon: Mm-hmm
- 1:05:09Kearns: it's the Nikki aspect of it that really kills it, but it's also Bear.
- 1:05:14I hate Bear, too, but I'm bringing my
- 1:05:16Jon: Yeah.
- 1:05:17Kearns: because I hate Bear.
- 1:05:18Jon: Yeah.
- 1:05:19Yeah.
- 1:05:19Kearns: mad at him throughout the whole movie.
- 1:05:22Even Ian, I really hated Ian.
- 1:05:24But just, it's,
- 1:05:25Jon: Mm-hmm
- 1:05:26Kearns: movie, and it's been a long time since I saw a movie that
- 1:05:27was this good at being a horror movie that was this enjoyable
- 1:05:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:34Yeah.
- 1:05:35So I think I'm gonna ultimately split the difference between you
- 1:05:40guys, and I'm gonna land at a four.
- 1:05:42it would probably be a 4.5 for me, but there's a half
- 1:05:46point deduction for the cat.
- 1:05:48I think you had- that has to be, that has to be accounted for.
- 1:05:52Um, and this was said, e- e- there was so much set up for me to not like
- 1:05:58Obsession, and I, told Allison before I started, "I am dreading watching this
- 1:06:04because I don't think I'm gonna like it," because you start with the level of hype
- 1:06:10Kearns: Yeah
- 1:06:10Jon: and how often across genres that falls flat for me.
- 1:06:17And then the Blumhouse label on it, always an issue for me
- 1:06:23Kearns: Oddly enough, that didn't wreck it for me
- 1:06:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:27And, and then,
- 1:06:28Kearns: too lately
- 1:06:30Jon: and then seeing it in like, oh, it's everybody's favorite
- 1:06:33movie of the year, it's the best movie of the year across genres.
- 1:06:38And I haven't seen enough to, to tell you exactly where Obsession would land for me.
- 1:06:44I know it doesn't land one because it didn't, it didn't
- 1:06:47get past Bone Temple for me.
- 1:06:49But I d- I like what he did.
- 1:06:52I like what Curry Barker did a lot.
- 1:06:55I… Like, okay, it's not the most inventive story.
- 1:06:58There's all sorts of horror movies with wishes in them, but it's, it,
- 1:07:05it's-- the story works enough, the performances are stellar, in a world
- 1:07:12where horror is properly appreciated, Indian Everett should at least be
- 1:07:20considered for awards next year.
- 1:07:23Like that to me, that's an award-worthy performance.
- 1:07:26Ryan: Agreed
- 1:07:27Jon: that's where it shines.
- 1:07:28It shines in these performances and creating characters that, that
- 1:07:32you care about one way or another.
- 1:07:34Because I hate Bear as much as you guys do, but I cared that I hated him.
- 1:07:40Like it's not just some throwaway, "I don't like this guy," whatever.
- 1:07:44Like I cared that I didn't like this guy, and I really thought
- 1:07:48about why I didn't like him.
- 1:07:50And I really liked Nikki.
- 1:07:52I really felt for Nikki as this gets deeper.
- 1:07:57So yeah, this is a four
- 1:07:58Kearns: Nice.
- 1:08:00Ryan: I feel, was gonna say to sum it up, like it's one of those films
- 1:08:04that I feel like if you love horror, you should at least watch it once.
- 1:08:07it's a watchable film to, to like,
- 1:08:09Jon: Yeah, yeah,
- 1:08:10Ryan: Like,
- 1:08:11Jon: yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:12And y- tune, tune the hype out, go in as blind as you can, which I mean is
- 1:08:18kind of a wasted statement after we've advised everyone to not listen right now
- 1:08:23Kearns: Right?
- 1:08:23Jon: you haven't.
- 1:08:24But
- 1:08:25Kearns: people will listen or listen to this without seeing it, though.
- 1:08:28There are a lot of people who've
- 1:08:29Jon: Yeah.
- 1:08:30Ryan: Yeah,
- 1:08:31Jon: Yeah, d- but know, know as little as possible and, you know, if
- 1:08:36you're someone like me who's gonna be bothered by the cat, gut through it
- 1:08:43Kearns: True.
- 1:08:43Good way to
- 1:08:43Jon: We got through it
- 1:08:45Kearns: But all right, guys, you know what time it is
- 1:08:47Ryan: Oh, it's time for fives
- 1:08:51Kearns: Yeah, you're
- 1:08:51Jon: Top fives
- 1:08:52Kearns: I believe,
- 1:08:53Ryan: fives?
- 1:08:54Hold on, I got,
- 1:08:55Kearns: your life.
- 1:08:55Ryan: got some note cards here.
- 1:08:57Yeah, yeah, y- yeah, friggin' Jordan Peele got rid of and, what, are you leaving us?
- 1:09:05messed up.
- 1:09:06You know, got rid of Jordan Peele so, uh, it was us.
- 1:09:11I was really excited to talk about us tonight.
- 1:09:13But I'm going top five comedy to horror directors since Curry Baker got
- 1:09:18his start, uh, directing and writing for a sketch comedy that he created
- 1:09:23on YouTube called That's a Bad Idea.
- 1:09:25And we're gonna start off with Danny and Michael Philippou Philippou?
- 1:09:32I, I, ooh.
- 1:09:33Jon: I think that's ballpark.
- 1:09:34Yeah, Philippou I think.
- 1:09:35Ryan: Yep.
- 1:09:36Jon: Philippou, Philpo
- 1:09:37Ryan: Okay, I was a little nervous on that.
- 1:09:39They're twins who have directed comedy, horror, and parodies on YouTube.
- 1:09:44Uh, part of their channel called RackaRacka, and
- 1:09:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:09:47Ryan: one of my favorite, uh, horror films that I can't wait to cover
- 1:09:50one day, and that's Bring Her Back.
- 1:09:52That's my number five.
- 1:09:53Uh, follows two step-siblings who find themselves orphaned and
- 1:09:57placed in the middle of an occult ritual by their new foster mother.
- 1:10:00You know I love this film.
- 1:10:02We're gonna watch it one day.
- 1:10:04I can't wait for Currents to have this watch again.
- 1:10:06It's just, just a good time.
- 1:10:09Lot of, lot of things getting eaten
- 1:10:11Jon: Yeah, it's a riot.
- 1:10:15Ryan: half,
- 1:10:15Jon: a minute
- 1:10:16Ryan: half the time.
- 1:10:17And this leads to my number four, which would've been For Us,
- 1:10:20but that doesn't exist anymore.
- 1:10:22And I followed the rules.
- 1:10:25Once it's deleted, it doesn't exist anymore.
- 1:10:27And I switched to Zach Cregger.
- 1:10:30We've covered a couple of his movies this year.
- 1:10:32He was formerly on a sketch comedy show as a writer, uh, I believe director,
- 1:10:37too, of The Whitest Kids U'Know.
- 1:10:38I know he acted, he wrote.
- 1:10:41I think he directed a couple.
- 1:10:42And I'm not gonna mention Weapons, even though I love Weapons,
- 1:10:45but I love Barbarian more.
- 1:10:48The story following a woman who rents a house on Airbnb and
- 1:10:51discovers a dark secret inside.
- 1:10:53It stars Georgina Campbell, Justin Long, and of course our favorite
- 1:10:59resident actor, Bill Skarsgård.
- 1:11:01a hoot.
- 1:11:02Watch our episode.
- 1:11:03It's just a really good film, and he follows up with Weapons, but
- 1:11:07Barbarian is really he initializes his horror roots in my opinion.
- 1:11:13then we get to number three.
- 1:11:16I've never mentioned this.
- 1:11:17I feel like I've mentioned this, or we have mentioned it in the past,
- 1:11:20but I'm gonna bring it down to John Krasinski, which his fame is The
- 1:11:24Office, and he's directed quite a few horror films, being A Quiet Place.
- 1:11:30You know, the start of that franchise.
- 1:11:32Post-apocalyptic based on the story of him and technically his wife, Emily
- 1:11:38Blunt, his real-life wife, plays his wife in the film, and they survive
- 1:11:42during a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by blind extraterrestrial
- 1:11:47creatures with an acute sense of hearing.
- 1:11:49the opening scene will always get me, with the kid turning on the
- 1:11:54truck, and always the nail she gets
- 1:11:57Yeah.
- 1:11:58If you've never seen A Quiet Place, it's an awesome film.
- 1:12:01It was actually filmed a little bit in Pawling, which was cool.
- 1:12:05Um,
- 1:12:05Jon: Yep
- 1:12:06Ryan: so it's like, you know, if you're from the area, the
- 1:12:09Hudson Valley area and all that
- 1:12:11Kearns: are, by the way.
- 1:12:12We n- we all live in Arizona
- 1:12:14Jon: Yeah.
- 1:12:16Ryan: That's what I'm saying.
- 1:12:16If you're in the Hudson Valley area, it's, it's cool to experience, right?
- 1:12:24He comes back after I mention bring her back.
- 1:12:27I love it.
- 1:12:28That's, that's my number five
- 1:12:29Kearns: I was close enough to hear some of that.
- 1:12:31You didn't need to reference it, buddy, by the way, 'cause
- 1:12:31we're not on camera when you're
- 1:12:32Ryan: Oh, yeah.
- 1:12:32Kearns: when you're
- 1:12:33Ryan: It
- 1:12:33Kearns: these
- 1:12:38Ryan: It's, we hear, we hear our echoes just like Nikki in Purgatory.
- 1:12:42But that leads to my number two.
- 1:12:44We're talking about David Gordon Green.
- 1:12:46Uh, David Gordon Green has directed comedy films, uh, known Pineapple Express, Your
- 1:12:52Highness, The Sitter, big films during 2008 to 2011 comedy, uh, college era.
- 1:12:58But he takes it one step up with, uh, in 2018 with Danny McBride as
- 1:13:03he writes the sequel to Halloween.
- 1:13:06And the 2018 version, I mean, picks up right after the first one, the 1978 one.
- 1:13:12It's not the idea of the cult of the Thorn, it's the idea of the babysitter.
- 1:13:16Laurie's just a random person that Michael went after.
- 1:13:20And it's an interesting twist because we focus so much on the idea that Laurie's
- 1:13:26his sister and the Myers curse that takes it back to the base roots, and I love
- 1:13:31that, uh, McBride and Green did that along with Jeff Fradley, who also co-wrote.
- 1:13:37And that leads to my number one.
- 1:13:39From comedy to, uh, horror.
- 1:13:42This is an interesting one.
- 1:13:44I'm just gonna give the title, and that's The Exorcist, because William
- 1:13:47Peter Blatty wrote comedy novels, John Goldfarb, Please Come Home I, Billy
- 1:13:54Shakespeare, and co-wrote A Shot in the Dark before he jumped into The Exorcist.
- 1:14:00The two books I, I looked up, they're pretty funny for
- 1:14:03the time they were released.
- 1:14:04But writing A Shot in the Dark, which it's the sequel to The
- 1:14:07Pink Panther, I mean, you go from that and then write The Exorcist?
- 1:14:13Well done,
- 1:14:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:14:15Ryan: Imagine if Inspector Clouseau was in The Exorcist, though.
- 1:14:18Kearns: Be kind of neat
- 1:14:19Ryan: Just But that's my top five, uh, comedy to horror and directors.
- 1:14:26So, but John, I'm curious, is your top five Whit Wishes?
- 1:14:31Jon: It is.
- 1:14:32Ryan: I'm
- 1:14:33Jon: It is.
- 1:14:34Ryan: to do something, but I don't
- 1:14:35Jon: My, my top five is wishes gone wrong.
- 1:14:41I guess we'll start out with number five, and number five
- 1:14:45is The Gate II: Trespassers.
- 1:14:49so teens summon a demon which is willing to grant them some wishes.
- 1:14:54Terrance wishes for his father to not be an alcoholic and to be a functional adult.
- 1:14:59And when it seemingly works, the teens start making more wishes, but the
- 1:15:05demonic minion has other plans for them and bites two of the teens, turning
- 1:15:10them into demons too, and things just spiral from there my number four is
- 1:15:17the sequel to a movie that we've done previously, and it's Leprechaun 2
- 1:15:26Kearns: Nice.
- 1:15:26Ryan: was, I was
- 1:15:27Jon: Yep
- 1:15:28Ryan: if you were gonna do two or three, there was
- 1:15:31Jon: I went with t- I went with two, in order to escape the cast
- 1:15:35iron safe he has been imprisoned in, Leprechaun grants three wishes to a
- 1:15:40man with devastating consequences.
- 1:15:42His first wish is for gold, which manifests inside of him, and
- 1:15:48from there things only get worse.
- 1:15:50Then the Leprechaun goes on the hunt for his intended bride.
- 1:15:56And, you know, typical Leprechaun insanity ensues and Warwick Davis is
- 1:16:01Warwick Davis-ing all over the place number three is a movie I've definitely
- 1:16:06put on of top five before, but it works here even better, and that's Wishmaster
- 1:16:11Ryan: Yes
- 1:16:13Jon: when a long-imprisoned djinn is accidentally awakened
- 1:16:16and released, it goes on a spree granting wishes in a twisted fashion.
- 1:16:21Think a woman being turned into a mannequin after wishing
- 1:16:25to be beautiful forever.
- 1:16:27it falls to a young gemologist to stop the djinn and prevent
- 1:16:32him from granting more wishes.
- 1:16:34And Wishmaster, I, I said the last time I talked about, has such a great cast of,
- 1:16:40like, horror icons littered throughout it.
- 1:16:42It's… Wishmaster's a lot of fun.
- 1:16:45my number two, not to be confused with the TV series or the two '90s movies,
- 1:16:52it's 1972's Tales From the Crypt.
- 1:16:56And it, this- it's an anthology movie, so what we're focusing on here is the
- 1:17:00segment called Wish You Were Here.
- 1:17:03so in this segment, Enid and Ralph realize their Chinese figurine
- 1:17:09will grant them three wishes.
- 1:17:11What they don't realize is every wish comes with a tragic consequence.
- 1:17:17Money?
- 1:17:18Ralph dies in a car crash, and then the remaining wishes only make things worse
- 1:17:25Ryan: Is that a, is it a good film?
- 1:17:28Outta curiosity.
- 1:17:29Not
- 1:17:30Jon: I mean, it's like, most anthologies.
- 1:17:31There's some really good segments and some that are kinda not so good.
- 1:17:37But it's worth a watch
- 1:17:38Ryan: I was gonna say it was because of the whole, um, just to piggyback real
- 1:17:41quick, uh, when they did comics back in the '30s and '40s and they did a lot
- 1:17:45of horror comics, it was either Tales from the Crypt or, uh, Vault of Horror.
- 1:17:49Uh, there was others,
- 1:17:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:17:51Ryan: are the main ones.
- 1:17:52And Tales from the Crypt was actually the first anthology movie, I think.
- 1:17:56And then when Creepshow came out in 1980, which they did a lot of, like, their own
- 1:18:00stories and stuff based on those comic books, it get, really got that push.
- 1:18:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:18:06Yeah.
- 1:18:07Yeah.
- 1:18:08Yeah.
- 1:18:09So my number one is another anthology movie, so we're gonna
- 1:18:14be focused on one segment in that.
- 1:18:17And my number one is The ABCs of Death Part 2, and we're looking at
- 1:18:23the segment called W is for Wish.
- 1:18:28so in W is for Wish, a boy wishes to fight alongside a He-Man-like action
- 1:18:34figure who he and his buddies idolize, and they're transported to that world only
- 1:18:40to find out it's not like it is on TV.
- 1:18:44They think they're gonna go fight heroic battles by the side of Prince Cassio,
- 1:18:50only for one boy to wind up being literally fried by the evil Zorb, while
- 1:18:56the other one winds up chained in a dungeon with a strangely pudgy fantasy man
- 1:19:03Kearns: Ew.
- 1:19:04Ryan: Very Game of Thrones
- 1:19:05Kearns: sound of that
- 1:19:05Jon: Yeah.
- 1:19:07Kearns: I don't like the
- 1:19:07Jon: Yeah.
- 1:19:08Kearns: at all.
- 1:19:09Jon: the two ABCs of Death movies with their 26 and 26 segments probably
- 1:19:16are equal about one good movie.
- 1:19:18This is one of the segments that's really awesome.
- 1:19:20definitely recommend, 'cause I mean, they're all short, the segments.
- 1:19:24You can…
- 1:19:26Ryan: About two minutes, five
- 1:19:26Jon: It's a fun one.
- 1:19:28Yeah, two to five minutes.
- 1:19:29A, a lot, a lot of current directors got their start in there
- 1:19:33Ryan: didn't they do something similar or am I thinking the same thing when
- 1:19:37they did like the Vault of Horror?
- 1:19:39Am I… Is that the same
- 1:19:40Jon: Oh
- 1:19:41Ryan: Alphabet of Horror or something?
- 1:19:44Jon: Probably, yeah.
- 1:19:45I don't, I don't think it's a, like a completely original a concept,
- 1:19:50but what they did is bring in a whole bunch of indie filmmakers and,
- 1:19:55Ryan: cool
- 1:19:56Jon: you know, really helped a lot of careers, I think
- 1:19:59Ryan: Yeah, I like that
- 1:20:00Kearns: is cool.
- 1:20:01I like that too
- 1:20:03Jon: Mm, so that's, that's five wishes gone wrong
- 1:20:06Kearns: Right.
- 1:20:07Well, that's two good top fives tonight, gentlemen, and one good movie, and one
- 1:20:12Jon: Absolutely
- 1:20:13Kearns: mustache
- 1:20:14Ryan: I'll take it
- 1:20:18Kearns: We like the look, Ryan.
- 1:20:19I'm done, I'm done messing with you, for this episode anyway.
- 1:20:22All right, guys.
- 1:20:23We're getting out of here
- 1:20:25Ryan: Have a good one.
- 1:20:26Keep on riding
- 1:20:30Jon: See ya.
- 1:20:32Ryan: It's the mustache.
- 1:20:34What?
- 1:20:34Jon: on writing or keep on riding?
- 1:20:37Kearns: I think
- 1:20:37Ryan: It's the mustache
- 1:20:38Kearns: like he
- 1:20:38Jon: Okay
- 1:20:39Kearns: but he said riding.
- 1:20:40All right, we're out of here.
- 1:20:41Bye everybody.
- 1:20:42You ruined the, you
- 1:20:43Jon: mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
- 1:20:46Yeah.
- 1:20:47Kearns: words
