Transcript
- 0:00Our number 2, Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 0:03It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:05Trent Condon and Ken Miller until 2:00.
- 0:07Wade looking bill. We'll preview tomorrow.
- 0:09Sweet 16 game, Nebraska, Iowa. Wade looking bill, 130 right
- 0:14now, David Kaplan, lot of topics for Capy.
- 0:16Hello pal, how are you? What's going on, brother?
- 0:20Good to talk to you. So obviously the Bulls will get
- 0:22to them in a minute as they made a new May needed a new head
- 0:25coach. But opening day baseball
- 0:27tomorrow and your thoughts on the makeup of the Cubs roster as
- 0:31it stands heading into another season.
- 0:33They announced the 25 man roster earlier today.
- 0:36Cap. Yeah, I like it.
- 0:38Now there's no Saya there. He's on the injured lift and
- 0:42Justin Steele is on the 60 day, but he's been cleared by doctors
- 0:48fully. He's been released from
- 0:49treatment. So they're, you know, they're
- 0:52not going to push it. They'll get him ready.
- 0:54He's not going to throw, you know, in a big league game.
- 0:58I'm saying he doesn't pitch till June 1.
- 1:01That's my gut feeling. Maybe he comes back earlier.
- 1:05He's healthy, but if that weathers at all chilly, why
- 1:09would you jeopardize a guy who could be a massive ad as you go
- 1:15toward a post season birth? No doubt.
- 1:18So we get the official roster, the 26 man. 26 man, right?
- 1:22Yes. Comforto makes it.
- 1:25I know we had a couple of those conversations, I think there.
- 1:28So he is on there. Was there anything though that
- 1:30was a surprise, Anything that came out of left field for you
- 1:33when you get the official one? And annoying injuries are always
- 1:36going to be a part of this conversation too.
- 1:39No, nothing really surprised me. Maybe Javier Assad not being
- 1:43there, but they want to keep him stretched out and he wasn't
- 1:47going to be in their rotation. They want to have him ready to
- 1:50start. So you know, you bring him to
- 1:53Chicago, Where are you using the guy?
- 1:56Either he doesn't ever pitch or he's like a late inning
- 2:00reliever. He's got good stuff and Craig
- 2:03Council said. We've got to have guys ready to
- 2:05start because nobody goes, you know, all five guys the whole
- 2:09season. So that's probably why he's down
- 2:12in Iowa. What kind of year do you expect
- 2:14from Colin Ray, who just had A and I don't lose a career year,
- 2:18but at this point in his career, I'm not sure many people saw
- 2:21last year coming. What is it?
- 2:23What? What's Colin Ray's role this
- 2:25year do you think, Cap? Not in the rotation, but able to
- 2:29spot start. And then you'll have him as a
- 2:32long man. You know, they're not going to
- 2:35push anything. Kate Horton's not going to
- 2:38throw, you know, 8 innings in his first start of the season.
- 2:41So they're going to have Colin Ray be able to go multiple
- 2:45innings and then get to the back end of the pen.
- 2:48And we'll see, you know, how some of the guys that they
- 2:51brought in to replace the Brad Keller's of the world and the
- 2:55Drew Pomeranzas of the world, We'll see how some of those guys
- 2:59do. The kid they picked up from the
- 3:00Twins, maybe he's healthy, has awesome stuff.
- 3:03You guys know that. But Palencia is locked in as the
- 3:07closer. So I think they've got a chance
- 3:10to have a really good bullpen, a chance.
- 3:12Cap as you know, all of us as sports fans, we get guys that we
- 3:15get crushes on. There's guys that we just can't
- 3:17quit. And I'm becoming more and more
- 3:21scared, concerned that my guy Porter, Porter Hodge is just not
- 3:25going to work another. He's banged up again.
- 3:28The stuff is incredible when he's healthy, but but I just
- 3:31don't know about the health part of it.
- 3:33Do I need to stop my man crush right now in Porter Hodge?
- 3:35Should I just move off that train and maybe that'll help him
- 3:37get back to hell? I would say you probably want to
- 3:42get on like Tinder and start putting a profile up looking for
- 3:46somebody else. Just hope he doesn't notice.
- 3:49It OK, yeah, updating things at the very least I got it because.
- 3:52For all the guys to have a man crush.
- 3:54I know it's just, it's so weird, right?
- 3:56But we all have those and and people think you're crazy.
- 3:58And like, I thought he was the closer to the future.
- 4:00Was that two years ago when they were out of it and he was
- 4:02closing a couple of games? I'm like, this is the dude and
- 4:05it just hasn't happened. That leads to kind of a bigger
- 4:07question, though. The bullpen as a whole, I mean,
- 4:10there's been so much shuffling these last couple of years of
- 4:12what they've done and mixing and matching and veterans and the
- 4:15young guys that have come up. Worked great last year.
- 4:17It absolutely did. How confident are you that this
- 4:20bullpen get a hold up again here for 2026?
- 4:24I'm pretty confident I am. I think they've got, you know, a
- 4:28good plethora of hard throwers, which Jed talked about after
- 4:33last season. As the council, we need more
- 4:35velocity, we need more swing and miss stuff.
- 4:38And I think they may have found that at least if the guys stay
- 4:43healthy that they brought in. So I feel like there's a good
- 4:47mix, lefties, righties and I love our closer.
- 4:50So I feel like they're in a pretty good spot there.
- 4:54They have depth in their starting rotation.
- 4:57So I'm I'm pretty solid on our pitching staff.
- 5:00Then again, if you are the team that we all think you're going
- 5:03to be, you're going to add on this year at the end of July.
- 5:06They didn't last year because they didn't think they were that
- 5:09team yet. But now with Bregman, you're
- 5:13that payroll, you're all in. Yeah, Cabrera, he's going to
- 5:16have a big year, one would assume.
- 5:18Speaking of payroll, PCA got paid.
- 5:20Your thoughts on the contract extension cap?
- 5:23I thought it was a brilliant move for both sides.
- 5:26For Pete, he's where he wants to be, he said.
- 5:30I don't ever want to play for another organization.
- 5:33I only want to be here and he now has financial security for
- 5:37the rest of his life. The way the deal is structured,
- 5:41this year he makes 880 grand and then he has 10 million next year
- 5:47and 10 million in 2028 and then it escalates from there.
- 5:52So it gives the Cubs real cost certainty that hey man, we can
- 5:57make a bold move to go get somebody because the PCA money
- 6:02is back loaded and they don't really have many people locked
- 6:06up on long term guarantee deals. They got Bregman, they got
- 6:10Dansby Swanson, now they have PCA, but they back loaded that
- 6:14money. I think that's it.
- 6:18Who else do they have? They have one year or two year
- 6:21deal with Film Aaton. Yeah.
- 6:23So that's one more year. They really don't have anybody
- 6:28else that they have a long term big money commitment to, which
- 6:32allows them to go to Kate Horton after this year or maybe you do
- 6:37it in season. You can go to Nico's up at the
- 6:40end of the year. Say is Azuki's up at the end of
- 6:43the year, Ian Hap is up at the end of the year.
- 6:46So they're going to have, you know, a lot of flexibility
- 6:49payroll wise to make a couple of moves here.
- 6:53Speaking of say he is starting the year on the IL, they
- 6:56retroacted it a couple days back to the 22nd.
- 6:59What's the latest update there on the health then?
- 7:02We anticipate maybe a little bit more DH ING early on whenever
- 7:05they get him back. Depends how he's moving.
- 7:09The doctors said it's a pain thing.
- 7:12You can, you can absolutely play on this.
- 7:14There's no structural damage. We had a sprain or strain, not a
- 7:19sprain. I don't know what the difference
- 7:21is, but that's what they said. And Craig said, let's be clear,
- 7:25it's a strained PCL, not a sprained PCL.
- 7:30I guess that's good news. That's the way he framed it.
- 7:33So I would imagine you'd see him DH more at the start when he
- 7:37comes back. I don't think this is a long
- 7:40term thing by any means in terms of an IL spin.
- 7:43Kappa, I saw the piece today. Yeah, I guess it snuck up on me
- 7:46that this will be the 10 year reunion of the World Series
- 7:49team. And I saw David Ross is putting
- 7:51something together with most of the the big names on that.
- 7:55Chris Bryant's part of it, Lester, Henrietta Schwarber,
- 7:59obviously Joe Madden's a part of it.
- 8:01They got it's it's the team, it's the big it's Rizzo.
- 8:06I I got to think captain Chicago that's going to break records
- 8:09for eyeballs that watch that boy.
- 8:10On the surface, it looks really good.
- 8:12How much of it have you seen? How aware of you are?
- 8:15Are you on on what David Ross has been working on?
- 8:18Well, I know he's got a podcast that he just announced with the
- 8:22Volume Company. That's Colin Cowherd's company,
- 8:26and it'll be him and Rizzo hosting this 2016 podcast where
- 8:32they interviewed different people from the team and tell
- 8:35stories that none of us have ever heard before.
- 8:38So I was around for just about every game of that season to
- 8:43watch. I did the plan, so I'm excited.
- 8:48Yesterday there was a guy online who's a great handicapper called
- 8:52the Philly Godfather, and he said he tweets at me, yo cap.
- 8:57And he held up the plan. Better get ready to write the
- 9:00second volume of this is the Cubs are winning the World
- 9:03Series at 18. No one wouldn't.
- 9:05That be something. The price is certainly there.
- 9:07Would it even come? Close cap I have a ticket on
- 9:09them I. Bet you do it every year as I
- 9:11have one every year on the Winnipeg Jets and I'll never
- 9:14cash mine. Would it be?
- 9:17Obviously it's a World Series, right?
- 9:19But it wouldn't come close to the first one, right?
- 9:21After all the history was goes up in flames, even though it's
- 9:2510 years later, would it come close to the first one?
- 9:27It wouldn't, would it? No, I've said this before.
- 9:32I was there that glorious night, November 2016 in Cleveland.
- 9:36You were on the air, weren't you?
- 9:38I was. I hosted a four hour post game
- 9:40show. We literally hit the air within
- 9:4310 seconds of that final out. My producer Jeff Nelson in my
- 9:48ear, I'm on the set. I mean, I was out of my mind
- 9:51yelling at Hollingsworth before the home run.
- 9:54He's like, relax, it's over. I said there's no done deals.
- 9:58More than any team in any sport in the history of our world that
- 10:02could be up 90 to nothing with two outs.
- 10:05No one on the bottom of the night.
- 10:06They could find a way to screw this up.
- 10:08And then they hit the home run. I'm screaming at Hollingsworth.
- 10:12You're just a mercenary. You have no idea.
- 10:14We went through you played for seven teams.
- 10:17I was furious. And then in my ear, I'm on the
- 10:20set and it's a little bit delayed, but I can hear what's
- 10:24going on. I'm not stadium speakers.
- 10:28And my producer, Jeff Nelson goes.
- 10:30The Cubs just won the effing World Series.
- 10:33We're on the air in 10-9. And we hit the air.
- 10:37And I mean, I was looking up at my late father going dad.
- 10:40We did it and I composed myself and it was game on, baby, game
- 10:45on. I can't wait.
- 10:46Cap, we know that you believe the Cubs will finish in first,
- 10:50and I think everybody on this airway right now.
- 10:52In the Central. Agrees with that.
- 10:54The Cardinals will finish in 5th, so give us that order 2
- 10:58through 4. How does this thing wrap up?
- 11:00Is it going to be Chalky Brewers, 2 Reds, Pirates?
- 11:03Or we're going to find a different order for those middle
- 11:05three teams. I had the Cubs winning it fairly
- 11:09comfortably. I'm not telling you they're
- 11:10going to win it by 20 games. They're going to win it by 5-6
- 11:13games. I think they win 94.
- 11:16I have the Brewers finishing second, I have the Reds
- 11:20finishing third, but a with their pitching injuries, the
- 11:24Pirates with their pitching could absolutely get third.
- 11:29Yep. In fact, I'll put the Pirates
- 11:30third, the Red 4th and the Cardinals a distant fifth.
- 11:34Yep, and that's music. Two years right here, you seem.
- 11:39You like saying? That Yeah, a distant fifth for
- 11:42the Cardinals. The.
- 11:43Cardinals. Cardinals are a joke.
- 11:46Yeah, to the White Sox cap. I heard your station made a
- 11:49little news yesterday. I'm not sure how well that was
- 11:51received as you guys. Your station would get bumped
- 11:54off the air for White Sox baseball.
- 11:56You're still going to carry White Sox on radio, but Waddle
- 11:58and Sylvie show is going to be online on the YouTube channel, I
- 12:02guess only the White Sox. What kind of year is this going
- 12:05to be? I think we both have felt
- 12:07leading up to it that the that it's turned, not necessarily
- 12:11turned into a playoff team, but it's headed in the right
- 12:13direction. Fair.
- 12:15It absolutely headed in the right direction.
- 12:17I don't think they have enough starting pitching to reach, you
- 12:21know, 78 to 84 wins. No chance, not with that
- 12:25rotation. I don't see it.
- 12:27I do think that their position players are getting better.
- 12:32I think it's a 70 win team, maybe 68, but that they were two
- 12:39years ago they were 41 wins. They were a train wreck.
- 12:43So I think they they're absolutely headed in the right
- 12:46direction and I think they could get to 7071.
- 12:52That's about it. We knew the rebuild was
- 12:55happening as it was going on, and it takes a while.
- 12:57This isn't basketball, right? Where rookies come in right away
- 13:00at 18 years old and can dominate the league, and there's no
- 13:02Wendy's walking through. Certainly at this point.
- 13:05Every time we've talked about the White Sox this offseason,
- 13:07you keep bringing up the pitching and both the rotation
- 13:09and the bullpen. How about the young guys coming?
- 13:11The guys, maybe they're two years away, three years away.
- 13:15How stocked up? Are they in arms in the minor
- 13:17leagues or is that still something that they're going to
- 13:19be working towards? Is building up what the pitching
- 13:22staff looks like going forward? Tell us a little bit, as we dig
- 13:24deeper into the White Sox, what things look like down in the
- 13:27minors. So they have two kids, Hagen
- 13:29Smith and Noah Schultz, who I think could be here this year,
- 13:33later this season. And I don't expect them to set
- 13:37the world on fire from day one, but I do think they'll be
- 13:40mainstays in their rotation next year.
- 13:42And then they have a kid coming back from Tommy John in Drew
- 13:46Thorpe. So you have three quality
- 13:50starting caliber arms that are coming, but I don't think they
- 13:54have right now enough, No shot. Jonathan Cannon's down in the
- 13:59minors, he could come up and give you a quality start.
- 14:02But I Eric Fetty, he's OK. I mean, when he's one of your
- 14:08five guys every fifth day, I just don't think you're very
- 14:11good. Yeah, no doubt Billy Donovan
- 14:14potentially cap right at the top of the wish list for North
- 14:17Carolina. Obviously, we know the success
- 14:19of Florida. Apparently he's got a nice
- 14:21contract still with the Bulls. Will the Bulls be looking for a
- 14:25new head coach? Do you think Donovan goes back
- 14:27to college? That makes sense to you.
- 14:30Like, every time I've talked to him, it did not seem like he
- 14:34wanted to go back to college basketball.
- 14:36But is he just resigned from the Bulls and hang out?
- 14:43I mean, he's a competitor. This thing's so broken here and
- 14:47so poorly run that at some point he's got enough money for the
- 14:52rest of his lifetime's 10. He's making $6 million a year
- 14:56and has been for a long time. I think he wants to win.
- 15:01Do I think he takes North Carolina?
- 15:03Maybe. I do think if Kansas opens, Bill
- 15:08self steps down. Why would he not want the Kansas
- 15:12job? It's a better job than North
- 15:13Carolina and I don't have to do 10 miles down the road.
- 15:17Well, then on top of it, one of the things we always heard about
- 15:19him is the recruiting side. The recruiting side now is you
- 15:22got enough money. All right, then I'm going to
- 15:23come to your school. I mean, you, you know the
- 15:26business, Kathy, and you know what it was when he was in the
- 15:28college game compared to what it is now.
- 15:30It has to be easier as long as you got the financial backing.
- 15:33And certainly both of those institutions does.
- 15:35It's just it's so different than it was even a decade ago now in
- 15:38college athletics. It is.
- 15:40It's totally different than it used to be.
- 15:43When I was there, you get yelled at if you talk to a player at a
- 15:47high school game because you're not supposed to bump them.
- 15:50That was the bump rule, they called it.
- 15:51Now it's can we get to 5 million enough?
- 15:56No, because I'm going to BYU for 7 million.
- 15:59That's what they paid the kid. This.
- 16:00Year. AJ de Bonse, like if I'm him,
- 16:03why would I go to the NBA this year unless I hate college?
- 16:07He keeps saying I'm having the time of my life.
- 16:09I love this. OK, why not play another year?
- 16:12You're telling me if you said to the BYU boosters they get 8
- 16:15million, I'll come back for one more year?
- 16:17Why do you have to rush to your adulthood if you truly love
- 16:20being in college? But he probably will GoPro and
- 16:23he'll make his money and move on with his life.
- 16:26But if you've got the right NIL deals behind you, like Kansas or
- 16:31North Carolina, you're just selecting players then because
- 16:34those are blue blood jobs. Yep, no doubt about it.
- 16:37Who's the best team that's still live in your mind?
- 16:39Cap from what you saw last weekend.
- 16:41The best team that's still alive.
- 16:46I mean, I picked Iowa State to win it for a reason.
- 16:48I love that coach. I love the way they play.
- 16:51They seem to me to have great culture.
- 16:54I don't know the coach there at all.
- 16:56I know most of the guys in the game.
- 16:58I've never met him. I like the way his kids carry
- 17:02themselves. I like the way they play.
- 17:05Good stuff, David Kaplan Centuring Stone of Iowa sponsors

- 18:23going to be given away a signed basketball from Ben McCollum and
- 18:28one from TJ Otzelberger and do I have that right?
- 18:31That's how I understand it, absolutely.
- 18:33And we will be not just any Buffalo Wild Wings, the one on
- 18:36Merle Hay. So I want to get that
- 18:37specifically out there for everybody.

- 18:55Absolutely. It's gonna be a good time.
- 18:57So Friday, looking for something to do over the lunch hour or
- 19:00maybe you know what you're taking 1/2 day or you're
- 19:02celebrating the Hawkeye win. You're not going to go into work
- 19:04because you're hungover. Well, just come out with us
- 19:07little hair of the dog and kick things off as we get ready.
- 19:10Then, of course, for the evening session on Friday with Iowa
- 19:12State playing, oh, these two games these two days, it's.
- 19:18It's better than the first weekend, Trent.
- 19:20I'm not going there, but it's awesome.
- 19:24They're better games. The games, they're better games
- 19:27are going to be incredible. I wonder, do you remember when
- 19:31we, when Mike Pomp said this like 3 years ago, maybe four
- 19:34years ago, that they were at Circa, were going to try and
- 19:37build the Sweet 16 weekend into a weekend that would maybe not
- 19:42get as many people in Vegas as the opening weekend, but make
- 19:46this, make this somewhat of a special event.
- 19:49I think the games are going to do it themselves for them.
- 19:52I really do look at the coaching matchups, look at the blue
- 19:55bloods, look at the names of the schools that are still alive.
- 19:59Even hearing the national people talk on Van Pelt uses this.
- 20:02I love it. Corn versus crops.
- 20:05Yeah, corn. Nebraska gets that moniker
- 20:07because they are the Cornhuskers and we get crops and corn versus
- 20:11crops. But hearing the national people
- 20:13talk about that and knowing the rivalry and knowing this is a
- 20:17new rivalry and yet the way that it's building and.
- 20:19And for a lot of people I know, this is towards the bottom of
- 20:22the rung on the national scale, but yet even the excitement
- 20:24we're hearing from them. I was listening to our buddy
- 20:27Matt Norlander, his podcast this morning, and him and Gary
- 20:31Parrish were talking about that. I think Nortlander had it second
- 20:36out of the eight games on his list, and Parrish had a third.
- 20:39And it's because, yeah, I mean that to hear that from 2
- 20:42national guys, just absolutely good.
- 20:44Game did what moved their needle.
- 20:46Michigan State, UConn. No, because of the coaching.
- 20:48Match, I think that one was a little bit further down.
- 20:50I think Texas, Purdue was last. That's the one that we had last
- 20:53yesterday. I think it was Illinois.
- 20:54Houston might have been. That's their can't miss that.
- 20:56Was their number one defense against offense that component
- 21:00to it? But to hear I would Nebraska in
- 21:02basketball, yeah. That in the second weekend of
- 21:05the tournament. And the second weekend of the
- 21:07tournament. Well, I read the I read with
- 21:09Simples radio station was, you know, they were so excited to be
- 21:12there, but yet it's standing in our way is that team that we
- 21:16hate that beats us and everything and then it quickly.
- 21:19Well, except volleyball, right? Like, OK.
- 21:22They they got us. There you can have that.
- 21:23They got us there, right? Even this year, Iowa had their
- 21:26worst dual season in wrestling in decades.
- 21:30They still beat Nebraska. That didn't happen to Nationals.
- 21:33They got of a Nationals. But in the duel, in the
- 21:35individual one-on-one match up, the Hawkeyes, in their worst
- 21:37duel season since the 1970s, still beat the Huskers.
- 21:41That's unbelievable. Let's take the rubber match.
- 21:44It's tomorrow night. Where are you watching it?
- 21:48You're going to be at home in your basement.
- 21:49I think so you. Can't watch that with anybody
- 21:52else. This is too big.
- 21:53You know what a psychopath I am too?
- 21:55You got to. Watch it by yourself.
- 21:56And I want to do it with Jack and Ella.
- 21:58There you go. Yes.
- 22:00And they'll probably disperse every once in a while when Dad's
- 22:03yelling at the TV. They'll watch it in a different
- 22:05room where they come back with me.
- 22:06But I think I need the solitude of it.
- 22:09I need to. Yeah.
- 22:10You. Need to be by yourself.
- 22:11Experiences I won't be at the bar stool at One Eyed Jake's
- 22:14like I was 27 years ago. That's where you were well.
- 22:17No longer A1 eyed. Jake's is no longer there.
- 22:20B. Yeah, I just don't think, no,
- 22:23that's the time I wonder. What it'd be like to buy out
- 22:25tomorrow night though, it's scary.
- 22:27I would say it'd be ballot ball man.
- 22:28It's going to be huge here. It's going to be huge, everyone.
- 22:31Yeah, it's going to be a big couple of days, no doubt about
- 22:34that. What a blast Miller and Condon
- 22:37Wade looking Bill will get. Wade's thoughts next.
- 22:40Must be kind of special to him, right?
- 22:41Former player of the uniform where the jersey what we'll find
- 22:45out is he's going to pop on with Trenton I next Trent's plays of
- 22:48the day circus sports they are still to come about till 10
- 22:51minutes or so before 2:00 Miller and Condon talking sports with
- 22:55you and we're glad you're with us on the Iowa sports radio
- 22:58network hi Miller and Condon welcome back Iowa sports radio
- 23:04network. I had to call her during the
- 23:05break said like you, he he unloaded his DraftKings account
- 23:11on Florida. Oh really huge Hawkeye fan just
- 23:15as an emotional, emotional head and he unloaded he said he
- 23:19couldn't be happier. He absolutely have to fund his
- 23:22fund his account again. Every single penny bettered on
- 23:25Florida and couldn't have been happier to lose it all.
- 23:27That's awesome. Been there.
- 23:28Before Yeah, and we'll be again, hopefully.
- 23:30Here's Wade looking. Bill Wade.
- 23:32I can only imagine. You seem like you're a pretty
- 23:34reserved guy. I'm guessing that wasn't the
- 23:37case when when Fogars hit the shot and the 4.5 seconds runs
- 23:44off the clock. Take us into your living room,
- 23:46wherever you were watching it, Wade.
- 23:48Yeah, we were watching it at home with my wife and our
- 23:51daughter happened to be back, who's a senior at Island on the
- 23:54dance team. So she's been involved in, you
- 23:56know, in a small way, but it was, it was really special.
- 24:00It was really special. And thank you, coach Todd
- 24:03Golden, and I know he's national champion and I'm sure he's a
- 24:07wonderful coach, but why would you press in that situation?
- 24:12That is something 4th grade teams wouldn't even do.
- 24:15You're ahead in the game. Why press?
- 24:17You're not trying to force a turnover.
- 24:19It was one of the most bizarre defensive strategies I've seen,
- 24:23but still still got to hit that shot.
- 24:25And Bennis Sturtz put it right on the money and just, you know,
- 24:28an an Iowa basketball all timer. No question.
- 24:31Wade, I brought this up to Ken earlier this week and one of my
- 24:35favorite components because it's Cooper making that pass and they
- 24:38had to be on the money as he hit him running.
- 24:40I mean, you talk about leading a receiver perfectly.
- 24:42That's exactly what Cooper did. And of course, J Rs dad was on
- 24:45the last Sweet 16 team. And as Sturtz sees how coming
- 24:49towards them, there's Al in the corner and he does it for a with
- 24:53a bounce pass and bounce passes and Doctor Tom and Iowa
- 24:58basketball. That was a huge part of it
- 25:00because it just bounced in a perfect way, settled right into
- 25:03the shooting pocket and Big Al went up with confidence there.
- 25:06I just thought it was a full circle moment.
- 25:08Iowa basketball doing it, but not just a pass, a bounce pass
- 25:12and then Al hitting the three pointer.
- 25:14It was a great moment to bring us back, I think 27 years ago to
- 25:17Doctor Tom. And just just the stories that I
- 25:20didn't know this just until a week or two ago, I think in
- 25:23Chicago maybe I heard the story about Bulgaria's father.
- 25:26You know, he passed away at when Al was a really young age.
- 25:30And I think Jr. had 12 points in their second round match up and
- 25:35Cooper had 12 points against Florida.
- 25:37You know, just things that you know, and 2 for the kid, you
- 25:40know, Iowa probably doesn't get him if his dad hadn't played
- 25:44Iowa. I mean, Purdue offered him
- 25:46Indiana, Indiana offered him and you know, just had a horrible
- 25:51first year, injuries and that lung issue entered the portal
- 25:55and, and came back with no teammates, you know, on the team
- 25:59per SE and just fought through it And, and man, it's it's a
- 26:04good match up tomorrow night. Nebraska's really good, but Iowa
- 26:09matches up really well with them, as we've seen in in both
- 26:12games. No question about it beat him in
- 26:16Iowa City as you know and then lost in overtime in the final
- 26:18day of the regular season. Octavian Banks with the
- 26:21exception of a free throw shooting against Florida, which
- 26:24is his head scratcher because it wasn't he over 80%.
- 26:27He was and makes 5 at 10. I think Banks has been, has been
- 26:31really, really good throughout the in particular against
- 26:34Florida. I loved his game.
- 26:38He's got, he's got a little edge to him.
- 26:40He's got a little edge to him. You know, he, he's a tough kid.
- 26:44He's a tough kid. And they needed something like
- 26:46that against the Florida team that was, I don't know if they
- 26:50were cheap or just aggressive, but it was, it was a weird first
- 26:54half when Trevor Urich just got truck.
- 26:58Paul was made there. And obviously the scramble on
- 27:01the scrum is Fulgaris. But Adrian Banks is a dude now
- 27:04and he can stretch you out a little bit and knock down that 3
- 27:07when he has to. That's why I think that Bhutan
- 27:11gel, you know, Fulgaris Bhutan Gel, Tavian Banks matchup is
- 27:16really good because that guy can't guard out to 22 feet and I
- 27:20think our bigs from Iowa can take advantage of that.
- 27:23Either shoot threes or take him to the basket.
- 27:27I would get to the Sweet 16 and they did it without Bennett
- 27:29Sturtz being a superhero, and if he would have told me that, I
- 27:32would have said there's no shot. Oh, and nine from three in the
- 27:35game and didn't play very well against Clemson, certainly
- 27:37offensively. Is he do?
- 27:40Is he worn down? I mean, what do you anticipate?
- 27:42You know Hoiberg, they're going to have.
- 27:44Yeah, You know, he wasn't great in the Big 10 tournament.
- 27:50He plays a lot of minutes. But I I will say a couple of
- 27:53things. The pace of Iowa's play is
- 27:56unique in that you're not pressing, you're not burning a
- 27:59lot of energy. Now he's different because he's
- 28:01a point guard, but I think that helps him rest a little bit.
- 28:05And then the the TV timeouts, you guys notice this.
- 28:09They're they're longer in the NCAA tournament.
- 28:11You know, it's more commercials, it's more Charles Barkley, you
- 28:15know, Capital One over and over again.
- 28:17So those TV timeouts are actually longer.
- 28:19I don't know if that's 30 seconds or even a minute longer.
- 28:22So that helps guys rest up a little bit.
- 28:23There's so many challenges, but there's something he's been off
- 28:27a little bit even, I'd say even the last month or so.
- 28:30I know he had 25 the first time they played Nebraska.
- 28:34I was kind of looking back but didn't shoot it great that
- 28:37night. And I think over in Lincoln, you
- 28:39know, he was OK. But to me that that just leads
- 28:43to more optimism. You know, he was he was very
- 28:46average, you know, on when they played Florida and they still
- 28:50won the game. They still knocked out the
- 28:52defending national champions. If he could put up a couple
- 28:55games now, like we've seen in the past when they when they
- 28:58played UCLA or we had 20 in the second-half of Minnesota.
- 29:03Now you got something. So we'll see.
- 29:05We'll see. But it's it's just a great time
- 29:07to be IO basketball fan because it because it's it's been a long
- 29:10time. It's been a long time.
- 29:11No question. So help us help me out boys.
- 29:13When when did the remember he didn't start a second-half or
- 29:17out of ATV time and it was a quad apparently was on the bench
- 29:20for do you remember that? Was that the Nebraska game?
- 29:24No, that was Ohio State, the Ohio State loss in the Big 10.
- 29:26Turn in the Big 10 turn. So do you think maybe the way
- 29:28there's something there that's being kind of kept under?
- 29:31Wraps with with with with Bennett Sturt, yes yes, you
- 29:34know, he was hard a little bit against Florida.
- 29:39I part of it. I think the way they play him
- 29:42now is he gets beat on they they put Yaxter Lindenberg type of
- 29:46size on him, you know, and they just they just beat on him and
- 29:50you know, for whatever reason, they're not calling a lot of
- 29:53fouls in this NCAA tournament, especially out front.
- 29:55And I think that's part of the issue.
- 29:58And again, you know, there's there's so much more tape on him
- 30:01now than there was even two months ago.
- 30:03And I know against Drake there was tape, but that's a different
- 30:05level. But he used to take that
- 30:07left-handed dribble step back three and he had plenty of space
- 30:12to get that to get that shot off.
- 30:14Now teams know when he takes that left-handed dribble step
- 30:17back, he's he's going to shoot a three.
- 30:18They close hard and now it's just harder for him to get that
- 30:21shot off. But I got faith, man.
- 30:23I, I, I think he's 22 and 7:00 tomorrow night.
- 30:26That works that I'd sign for that right now.
- 30:30Take that, and Iowa, I think is going to be in really, really
- 30:33good shape. I think it's going to be a
- 30:34grounder grinder. It's going to be ugly.
- 30:36Now, there's still games in front of us and there could be
- 30:39something even more special in front of this Iowa basketball
- 30:41team. But hearing from McCollum after
- 30:44the game and talking about he wants tough guys and that's what
- 30:46he recruits to his tough guys and seeing him all over the
- 30:49national landscape now and it feels like everybody in the
- 30:51country is talking to Ben McCollum, It does allow your
- 30:55mind to drift a little bit about what's going to continue the
- 30:59future of this program and after this 27 year drought back in the
- 31:03Sweet 16, but even more there, this guy's a winner.
- 31:06He's been a winner every single place that he has been.
- 31:09Wait, as your mind started to drift a little bit and and
- 31:12seeing Iowa being back to that consistent winter that they were
- 31:15during the 70s and the 80s and and into the 90s, getting back
- 31:18to that level once again for Iowa hoops?
- 31:21You know, I'm, I'm cautiously optimistic.
- 31:23I I thought this half time, you know, those 32nd interviews,
- 31:26which I always like because you never know what's going to get
- 31:28bad. But he he, he basically called
- 31:30out Florida, you know, Yeah, I love it.
- 31:32He's got, what was the phrase he used?
- 31:34Everybody sensitive, I think. Those guys got all sensitive.
- 31:38Here's the thing. If it was 10 years ago, Trent, I
- 31:41would say absolutely this. This will get the ball rolling,
- 31:45the snowball going downhill and it's just going to grow.
- 31:48I know. Where you're going?
- 31:49So much man, you just you've got to have money.
- 31:52You know, if you look at you look at Tate stage let's take
- 31:55here for example, had a really good freshman year.
- 31:58It's from Oklahoma, you know, maybe OU says, hey, we made a
- 32:02mistake. I hope this doesn't happen, but
- 32:04everybody's got agents and phones are ringing.
- 32:06I'm sure, you know, I was talking to portal people, I'm
- 32:09sure this week. This definitely helps all this,
- 32:14all this exposure. But man, it just comes down to
- 32:17how much money can you give me? You know, I love that Coach
- 32:21McCollum is tough and this and that, but it's just a different
- 32:24market. You know, it's a different
- 32:26market that I was going to lose kids.
- 32:27I shouldn't have said take save specifically, but.
- 32:30I get your point. Oklahoma.
- 32:31Yep, Yep. Oh, Garris is going to get phone
- 32:34calls. That guy's a good player.
- 32:35You know, every team's going to lose players and every team's
- 32:38going to get transferred. So, you know, whether you're
- 32:40Addie Brown from Iowa State, you know she's leaving, but it's
- 32:44just a different time. But man, it's just something we
- 32:46can worry about that later. But right now I think it's
- 32:48Nebraska and then even Illinois, Houston.
- 32:51Can you imagine? We'll see.
- 32:52We'll see. Can you imagine Illinois, Iowa
- 32:55for a trip to the Final Four? Can you imagine that?
- 32:59Like 1986, Flying out, Line I and Roy Marble and Kevin Gamble.
- 33:04They'd be wonderful. Be terrific.
- 33:06Yeah, oh man, what might be? Was that your guys's biggest
- 33:10rival when you were playing? Because it was on the heels of
- 33:13the Dion Thomas saga. Yeah, you know, so, so my when I
- 33:20was in the Big 10 that it was loaded.
- 33:22You know, my freshman year, Michigan beat Illinois in the
- 33:25finals. Can you imagine that?
- 33:26Two teams in the finals playing each other and no, I'm just, I'm
- 33:32sorry, maybe they're both my final four, but.
- 33:36Seton Hall The. Championship, yeah.
- 33:38Seton Hall, it got exacerbated when that Dean Thomas, Bruce
- 33:41Pearl thing came about, you know, and it, but there, there
- 33:45were some battles there my first couple years.
- 33:47The one year we weren't very good.
- 33:48It was my sophomore year. We we got senior day at Michigan
- 33:53when they had Terryville's Lloyd, Mont Lloyd Vaught and
- 33:56Rameel Robinson. We got senior day at Illinois
- 33:59when they had Kendall Gill, Stephen Bartle, Lowell Hamilton
- 34:03and Kenny Battle and I think Illinois beat us that day.
- 34:06I think it was in the 40s. I have to check, but it might
- 34:09have been like 42 and it was just, and we were bad.
- 34:12We were just, we were ready to be done.
- 34:14But they were so good. But Illinois is a huge rivalry.
- 34:17I mean, just that in state thing, you know, we're trying to
- 34:19get recruits from Illinois to come to Iowa.
- 34:22It's those, it's those border wars.
- 34:23It's Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois.
- 34:26I think those are the biggest games every year.
- 34:28What kind of player was Bardo like?
- 34:30Do you remember? Great player, you know,
- 34:33borderline NBA player, just he was a really good player, but he
- 34:37was the 5th best player on that team.
- 34:39He was big too. Stevens, like 6566.
- 34:42He was, he was one of those big point guards.
- 34:44Him and Stevie Smith, him and Steve Smith from Michigan State
- 34:46were those big, you know, back when point guards were still
- 34:49511, six feet tall. Those guys were big, good
- 34:52players, yeah. He's a good broadcaster too.
- 34:54I like the way he analyzed his. Games I haven't seen him much, I
- 34:56think he's. Getting, you know what, that's a
- 34:58good point, and that's an excellent point.
- 34:59I never thought about that. Yeah, because he was all over TV
- 35:03leading up to this year. Yeah, I haven't.
- 35:06Seen him much? No, Robbie Hummel does every
- 35:08game. And that's OK, because he's
- 35:10really tough to. Be I think he's the I like
- 35:13Robbie. One thing real quick too, that
- 35:16those three man booths are tough to watch when it's Grant Hill
- 35:21and and Rafferty and is it an eagle?
- 35:24Doesn't everybody's got to speak and those guys are great
- 35:27basketball minds, but we just we just need 2.
- 35:29We don't need we don't need three people in the Blues.
- 35:32And then don't get me started on the halftime show.
- 35:35The NFL player and the WNBA player.
- 35:38My goodness, let's just get Charles.
- 35:40Rocky hasn't watched the college basketball game all year.
- 35:44He misses Ernie Johnson and Kenny the Jet.
- 35:46Yeah. Clark Kellogg is great.
- 35:49Awesome, but but but he's a college guy.
- 35:51He's watched all these games all year and then here comes the
- 35:56other people that can't pronounce anybody's name.
- 35:59Yeah, enjoy the game pal. Rooting for your alma mater.
- 36:02I think a lot of people in the listening audience are just be
- 36:05unbelievable. We get both Iowa team sports in
- 36:07the state. Of Iowa.
- 36:08Pretty special it's. Rarefied there, man.
- 36:11It is. It's just, you know, I, I, I
- 36:13think it's a good match up and it's going to be close one
- 36:15night, he said. Like it's going to be a rock
- 36:17fight, so whoever can kind of outlast the other and make some
- 36:20free throws down the stretch is going to win.
- 36:22I just got this note from my friend Mike Mahon.
- 36:24Bardo's move to Mexico. Oh, really?
- 36:26That's why he's not doing a lot of games.
- 36:27Good for him. There you go.
- 36:29Retirement winters are better there.
- 36:31Good stuff. Wade looking.
- 36:32Bill. Thanks for popping on, my
- 36:33friend. Appreciate it.
- 36:34We'll talk to you down the road. See you tonight.
- 36:36Tomorrow. Thank you.
- 36:37Bye bye Wade looking Bill good stuff Bartow in Mexico good for
- 36:41him. Thank you Mike Mahon appreciate
- 36:42you listening first of all and helping out as you've done for

- 37:57I also tried to find a number in the WNIT tonight.
- 38:01I couldn't find one. But I'm going to play Dayton
- 38:04against Illinois State. We got the NVC match up MVC mate
- 38:08there with Illinois State. I just think Dayton crushes
- 38:11them. Maybe it's the couple of games I
- 38:13saw with Illinois State against both Drake and you and I that
- 38:16has tainted my view of them. But I've been out on the first
- 38:19couple of rounds. I'm going to do the same here.
- 38:20Give me the Flyers minus the 7 1/2.
- 38:22Now, we've talked earlier about emotional hedges and I'm just so
- 38:26sick of seeing Steve Alford so. Betting Auburn.
- 38:29I know I'll go the other way. I'm going.
- 38:31To betting on. Alford, yes.
- 38:32So if I have to see him again, well, at least I'll make a
- 38:35little bit of money here. I'm getting 9, though, which
- 38:37actually does feel pretty hefty. 9 for the Wolfpack.
- 38:41You mean Nevada with pick number 22 plays in baseball, taking the
- 38:44Yankees on the buddy line. Now, like, we talk about this
- 38:47every year, but I know we have a lot of new listeners out there.
- 38:51We talk about Circa all the time and when it comes to football
- 38:54season, look, the difference is very negligible.
- 38:57Might be 2 1/2 someplace, three others.
- 38:59But if you are betting baseball on a daily basis or maybe just
- 39:03bet a game every weekend, whatever it is, you are leaving
- 39:06money on the table. Not having the Circa Sports app.
- 39:10It is a difference every single day.
- 39:15A majority of the games you're going to get a better price.
- 39:18So there's 15 on the docket, usually 910 just alone on the
- 39:21money line. A better price, including today
- 39:24-118 is what I'm playing with the Yankees.
- 39:27Go to a couple big brands. You're like -130 that 12 cent
- 39:31difference even if you're a Nickelodeon like.
- 39:34One of the big brands -126. Yeah, it's game after game after
- 39:40game. Not every time, but a majority
- 39:43of the time I would say that's going to do it.
- 39:45And for somebody that does bait bet baseball on the daily, the
- 39:48Circa Sports app is a must if you're playing baseball.
- 39:52No doubt. We talked about the futures last
- 39:54week, Cabrera to win the Cy Young.
- 39:56Huge difference. At the big shops, 5060 to 1,
- 40:00Capy used a boost to get it to 75 to 1.
- 40:02Didn't have to use a boost at circa.
- 40:04It's 90 to one. That's what it was a week ago,
- 40:07and I also made that wager. I decided to tail Capy on that
- 40:10one. That's what you're going to get
- 40:12with Circa. So will you watch baseball
- 40:14tonight? It'll be on one of the TV's,
- 40:16will it? Yes.
- 40:17How am I going to convince Cindy not to watch Netflix?
- 40:20Because we we only for whatever reason, if she's watching, I
- 40:23can't. Oh, you got like just a single
- 40:25stream. I have no idea what we.
- 40:27Have. That's probably not that.
- 40:28I can't watch it when she's watching Netflix.
- 40:30Yeah, because there's certain ones, depending on the plan that
- 40:32you have, you can only stream at one time or you can't download,
- 40:35and that must be the one that you have.
- 40:37Well, there's other things. Tell her to flip on Hulu or HBO
- 40:41or but you guys got a bunch of things we.
- 40:43Do we? Do I just?
- 40:44She can't watch The Real Housewives just on DIRECTV.
- 40:46I. Don't think she watches that.
- 40:48No, I have no idea what she watches.
- 40:50You have no clue I really. Truly don't.
- 40:53No. You know what she watches the
- 40:54The Grey show, the Doctor show, the Grey's Anatomy.
- 40:58Grey's Anatomy. That's only once a week though.
- 41:00No idea what she watches I I do know the word out of.
- 41:04Time Oh, Logan Webb over strikeouts as well.
- 41:06Oh, how many? 6 1/2?
- 41:08All right, lot of kids can track and I got stuff a Cy Young
- 41:11future on that dude too. Play ball tomorrow.
- 41:15Bobby Hansen, Stephen M Simple amongst the guest list that will
- 41:19join Trenton I Trenton I with you Monday through Friday, noon
- 41:22to two to talk sports with you. Thanks for being with us on the
