- 1:46Speaker 5: going to join us to talk about that a little
- 1:48Speaker 5: bit later on. On a bit of a brighter note,

- 1:52Speaker 5: version benefiting the United Way of Central West Virginia, announced
- 1:55Speaker 5: last night. Gonna be joined by Margaret O'Neil from the

- 2:26Speaker 5: our good friend Monck the newspaper, Steven Allen Adams.
- 2:29Speaker 7: Good morning, Dave, good to be here.
- 2:32Speaker 5: Thank you for being our saw on the socials that
- 2:34Speaker 5: you and the lovely Jessica were at the big reveal party.
- 2:37Speaker 5: I think last night over at rock City and Dancing
- 2:39Speaker 5: with the Stars look like a good time.
- 2:41Speaker 7: It was a good time, very crowded space. We were
- 2:45Speaker 7: there to support a couple people that we know that
- 2:49Speaker 7: are in the contestants whatever you call that, like, what
- 2:55Speaker 7: do you call that? Like the dancers, let's just say
- 2:57Speaker 7: the dancers. So we knew if you testants the contestants.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:02Speaker 7: Yeah, obviously I don't dance. I don't dance in a
- 3:04Speaker 7: non game shows, so I don't know the technical terms.
- 3:06Speaker 7: But but yeah, it was a good time, great event,
- 3:10Speaker 7: and of course it was giving Tuesday. I know people
- 3:14Speaker 7: that pay to get in there. The proceeds are splewed
- 3:16Speaker 7: up between all the dancers and of course the contestants
- 3:18Speaker 7: all raise money over this time period meet certain goals, uh,
- 3:23Speaker 7: and they get money from friends and family and organizations
- 3:27Speaker 7: and businesses, deals and.
- 3:28Speaker 5: Again Market's going to join us to talk about that
- 3:30Speaker 5: a little bit later on. It's become one of those
- 3:32Speaker 5: big events. But you know in Charleston that everybody if
- 3:35Speaker 5: they're not if they're not taking part in it, they're
- 3:38Speaker 5: there or they're supporting their favorite couple and the reveal
- 3:40Speaker 5: party to sell last night. As to who's going to
- 3:42Speaker 5: be doing that, it's not to Market.
- 3:43Speaker 7: O'Neil is one of the most important organizations. One of
- 3:46Speaker 7: the most important organizations certainly in the state. Of course,
- 3:50Speaker 7: there's multiple different United Ways across the state. They operate
- 3:52Speaker 7: two on one. They were pivotal during the snap crisis
- 3:56Speaker 7: and helping two direct resources. So they need all the
- 3:58Speaker 7: help we can.
- 3:59Speaker 5: Get the It seems to me, Steven, just an opinion
- 4:02Speaker 5: here that we have spent way too much time, energy,
- 4:07Speaker 5: and effort of the last couple of years talking about
- 4:08Speaker 5: vaccinations in West Virginia, Okay, And what I mean by
- 4:12Speaker 5: that is is that it just I mean, and look,
- 4:14Speaker 5: it's prickly, well it is, but it's you know, I'm
- 4:20Speaker 5: a person that always thinks, hey, look we can always
- 4:23Speaker 5: look at things. We don't have to say, well, this
- 4:24Speaker 5: is the way we've always done it. We can always
- 4:26Speaker 5: you know, keep a constant eye on things. But it
- 4:28Speaker 5: just seems to me, as you and I I'm you know,
- 4:31Speaker 5: a little bit older than you, but it just seems
- 4:33Speaker 5: to me that there was not a lot of talk
- 4:35Speaker 5: about vaccinations and all of a sudden it comes up
- 4:37Speaker 5: again and it's been you know, West Virginia's made national
- 4:40Speaker 5: news on a couple of fronts, one because of the
- 4:45Speaker 5: success rate that we've had with Keith over the years
- 4:48Speaker 5: keeping down childhood illnesses. And it just seems to me,
- 4:52Speaker 5: and look, they may have a reason for that. I've
- 4:54Speaker 5: interviewed a lot of the folks on the show that
- 4:56Speaker 5: want to scale some of these back. I understand that,
- 5:00Speaker 5: but it just seems to me like now we're kind
- 5:02Speaker 5: of reversing a lot of those. And there was a
- 5:04Speaker 5: decision yesterday and you write about it, Brad and everybody
- 5:07Speaker 5: else wrote about it to what happened yesterday Raleigh County.
- 5:10Speaker 7: Oh yeah, well really what happened here in charge of Charlee?
- 5:13Speaker 5: So yeah, our.
- 5:14Speaker 7: West Virginia Supreme Court issued a stay of Raley County
- 5:19Speaker 7: Judge Frobul's decision from last week, which granted a full,
- 5:24Speaker 7: permanent injunction against the State Board of Education County Board
- 5:28Speaker 7: of Education in Rawley County from blocking them from accepting
- 5:34Speaker 7: religious vaccine exceptions have been granted by the State Department
- 5:37Speaker 7: of Health per Governor Morrissey's executive order from last January.
- 5:41Speaker 7: It's a pretty big deal. It seems like you can't
- 5:47Speaker 7: really predict a lot of times how the Supreme Court's
- 5:49Speaker 7: going to go depending on a stay, but you can
- 5:53Speaker 7: infer some things. And the fact that they're issuing a
- 5:55Speaker 7: stay at this point, which I think there's been motions
- 5:59Speaker 7: for stays before, right, but I think in this case
- 6:03Speaker 7: it finally they said yes to a stay because I
- 6:06Speaker 7: think they had all the information they were going to
- 6:08Speaker 7: have now that there's a full written order out from
- 6:10Speaker 7: Judge Trobell. The other interesting thing about this also is
- 6:14Speaker 7: he had Judge Trouble had put together a class action
- 6:17Speaker 7: which roped in all of the more than five hundred
- 6:20Speaker 7: and seventy religious vaccine exemptions granted across the state, unless
- 6:23Speaker 7: those cases are like situations that are already before another
- 6:26Speaker 7: sert of court judge that was roped into his order.
- 6:30Speaker 7: But this stay from the Supreme Court basically means that
- 6:34Speaker 7: all those five hundred and seventy religious exceptions school systems
- 6:38Speaker 7: don't have to accept them until ultimately this is adjudicated
- 6:42Speaker 7: and decided by the Supreme Court, probably sometime in the
- 6:45Speaker 7: middle of next year.
- 6:46Speaker 5: And if you want to read the actual state it's
- 6:48Speaker 5: length and Brad's story at the Website's the lead story
- 6:50Speaker 5: this morning at wv Metronews dot com state to school
- 6:54Speaker 5: board President Paul Hardesty, who's been at the center of
- 6:57Speaker 5: a lot of this. And you know Paul Paul, he
- 7:01Speaker 5: never never backs down for any names. He says what's
- 7:03Speaker 5: on his mind. He is is quoted in this because
- 7:06Speaker 5: but I think he was a little happy with this because, Okay,
- 7:10Speaker 5: now we're getting somewhere to getting it's settled. Is that
- 7:12Speaker 5: is that a fair assertion?
- 7:13Speaker 7: I think so this has been a long ways coming
- 7:15Speaker 7: because I mean the first lawsuit which was filed by
- 7:18Speaker 7: a Raley County parent, there was some other parents down
- 7:20Speaker 7: there that joined her lawsuit initially. That's back in June.
- 7:24Speaker 7: We had a preliminary junction issued in July by Judge Frobell,
- 7:28Speaker 7: which is the first thing that was appealed to the
- 7:30Speaker 7: Western Chin Supreme Court. And then we didn't even get
- 7:34Speaker 7: like the cases in regards the hearings rather in regards
- 7:38Speaker 7: to the permanent injunction until September October, and then we
- 7:43Speaker 7: just got Judge Frobel's rolling last week, the day before Thanksgiving.
- 7:47Speaker 7: So this has been a long time coming. And there's
- 7:50Speaker 7: been confusion with your schools about whether you accept a
- 7:53Speaker 7: religious exception, whether you don't accept a religious exception, if
- 7:57Speaker 7: you follow the governor's executive order, what do you call
- 8:00Speaker 7: follow the state Departments of Educations directive to not accept
- 8:04Speaker 7: these exemptions. I mean, there's just been confusion. So at
- 8:07Speaker 7: least this is definitive stating that these exemptions don't have
- 8:12Speaker 7: to be accepted by a school system, and then we'll
- 8:15Speaker 7: have to just figure out what the final ruling is
- 8:17Speaker 7: by the Supreme Court. I'm assuming there'll be oral arguments
- 8:20Speaker 7: at some point scheduled and all that, but all that's
- 8:23Speaker 7: probably going to be until next year.
- 8:24Speaker 5: Okay, that's going to be next year. And here we are.
- 8:26Speaker 5: We started this battle, you know, some time ago, as
- 8:30Speaker 5: you noted. Here we are, you know, on December the third,
- 8:33Speaker 5: and still I mean, we're making progress, I guess, but
- 8:38Speaker 5: we're still in a holding pattern of this thing.
- 8:40Speaker 7: Well, I do think a lot. You know, there's some
- 8:42Speaker 7: initial deadline set in the preliminary injunction appeal by the
- 8:46Speaker 7: State Supreme Court, and I think they all had to
- 8:48Speaker 7: have all their documents and everything submitted by I think
- 8:51Speaker 7: at some point in February. And why that far ahead, Well,
- 8:55Speaker 7: I have a theory on that. And the theory is
- 8:57Speaker 7: I do think that everybody, Supreme Court, the governor, school systems,
- 9:02Speaker 7: I think they all want the legislature to take another
- 9:05Speaker 7: crack at this one way or the other. It's state
- 9:07Speaker 7: definitively whether religious vaccine exemption should be put in the
- 9:11Speaker 7: compulsory vaccine law or not. Now the legislature said no.
- 9:15Speaker 7: Last year, state said said yes. House of Delegates after
- 9:19Speaker 7: a long debate and a lot of thought said no,
- 9:23Speaker 7: there's pressure to get them to do this again this
- 9:26Speaker 7: legislative session, and they might very well do it. I mean,
- 9:29Speaker 7: the governor and supporters of religious vaccine exemptions are right
- 9:33Speaker 7: to say forty five other states have some former religious exemption.
- 9:38Speaker 7: So maybe the legislature tries to follow the lead of
- 9:42Speaker 7: one of those states that allows for that, but also
- 9:45Speaker 7: have some guardrails put into it, and they do something
- 9:47Speaker 7: like that. I don't know, but I think people want
- 9:50Speaker 7: the legislature to just settle this and be done with it.
- 9:55Speaker 5: Talking again with Stephen Allen Adams of Ogden Newspapers, of
- 9:57Speaker 5: course we're now switching gears for a little bit. See
- 10:00Speaker 5: we're less than a week away a week passed from
- 10:03Speaker 5: the death of GUARD specialist Beckstrom, and of course staff
- 10:06Speaker 5: started angel Wolf continues to fight for his life. Hopy
- 10:09Speaker 5: wrote in his commentary about the role of the GUARD
- 10:11Speaker 5: in DC in the first place, and it was interesting
- 10:14Speaker 5: to me that the State Democratic Party we had delegate
- 10:18Speaker 5: and state Party Chair Mike Pushkin, as well as Republican
- 10:21Speaker 5: Party Chair Josh Holsteing, both on Metro News Midday yesterday.
- 10:25Speaker 5: But it seemed to me going back to the Democrats
- 10:27Speaker 5: for a moment that it's just odd that the State
- 10:29Speaker 5: Democratic Party chose to repost Hoppy's commentary. I didn't see
- 10:34Speaker 5: that coming. Your take on this whole.
- 10:36Speaker 7: Thing though, Yeah, of course, you know. I was at
- 10:39Speaker 7: the press conference Monday with the Governor and General Seward
- 10:42Speaker 7: of the National Guard. First press conference. I should point out,
- 10:45Speaker 7: since this whole thing started the last Wednesday, I mean,
- 10:49Speaker 7: there had been no press conferences with West Virginia press
- 10:51Speaker 7: or spent a lot of press releases, including wrong information
- 10:55Speaker 7: in press releases. There's been video messages, there have been
- 10:58Speaker 7: social media posts, and we've seen the governor and others
- 11:01Speaker 7: go to national cable news, but we've not had the
- 11:06Speaker 7: ability to ask questions. And I asked specifically questions about
- 11:12Speaker 7: the emphasis on the volunteer part list because again, the
- 11:15Speaker 7: one hundred and seventy people Guards members that are in
- 11:18Speaker 7: d C Firm and West Virginian National Guard are volunteers.
- 11:22Speaker 7: But they're volunteers because they were authorized to be there
- 11:25Speaker 7: as volunteers by Governor Morrissey. And one of the things
- 11:28Speaker 7: I wanted to make sure of, and Hobby brings us
- 11:30Speaker 7: up in his column is talking about you know, taking responsibility.
- 11:34Speaker 7: I want to make sure governor said explicitly he did that,
- 11:37Speaker 7: and the Governor's credit he did. But in regards to
- 11:40Speaker 7: what they were doing in DC, there's a good question
- 11:43Speaker 7: about what it is. I mean, the Governor's office really
- 11:46Speaker 7: didn't like Pushkin in his statements stating that they were
- 11:49Speaker 7: doing beautification or that sort of thing. Though the Pushkin's defense,
- 11:53Speaker 7: he's trying to find out what they were doing. So
- 11:56Speaker 7: if our National Guard weren't doing landscaping and mulching, you know,
- 12:00Speaker 7: on them all, and that's wonderful, but what were they doing.
- 12:03Speaker 7: The only thing we've heard really described as these roving
- 12:06Speaker 7: presence patrols is what they've described them as. What does
- 12:09Speaker 7: that mean? And we don't really know well, And.
- 12:12Speaker 5: Again it goes back to the fundamental differences steven as.
- 12:17Speaker 5: Everybody sees things in different ways. And we had a
- 12:19Speaker 5: text of the show yesterday from somebody who has family.
- 12:23Speaker 5: I think the textas said it was their daughter or
- 12:25Speaker 5: and I may be wrong about that, but said that
- 12:27Speaker 5: they live in d C. And and that a lot
- 12:29Speaker 5: of people don't want them there. But then there are
- 12:31Speaker 5: others that are going to say, absolutely, we want them here.
- 12:35Speaker 5: Regardless of of anything they went and uh, and I
- 12:38Speaker 5: think that both staff Sergeant Wolfe and Guard Specials Sarah
- 12:44Speaker 5: Becksterrom are to be committed for that and they both
- 12:47Speaker 5: sound like in in interviewing people that knew them and
- 12:52Speaker 5: what are there It just seems to me that that
- 12:55Speaker 5: they both were quality human beings, one of whom's life
- 12:57Speaker 5: was ended and the other one's fighting for his life.
- 12:59Speaker 7: Is we speak, we could be proud of our National Guard.
- 13:02Speaker 7: I think they've stepped up as they always have through emergencies,
- 13:05Speaker 7: through whatever we've asked them to do, overseas deployments, and
- 13:09Speaker 7: now what they've done washing in d C. And by
- 13:11Speaker 7: all accounts they've they've been honorable in their service in DC.
- 13:17Speaker 5: On that's without you can say that.
- 13:19Speaker 7: And I think you can also be critical of the leadership,
- 13:23Speaker 7: whether that's Governor Morrissey, whether that's General Seward, whether that's
- 13:26Speaker 7: Donald President Donald Trump, for why they were there and
- 13:30Speaker 7: what they were doing. Was it more of being seen
- 13:35Speaker 7: a political prop thing? You know, sure they were sworn
- 13:39Speaker 7: in as marshals, but were they following proper law enforcement
- 13:44Speaker 7: procedures and the things that they did? And it doesn't
- 13:47Speaker 7: take away from the bravery, uh, and the things that
- 13:50Speaker 7: they've done. Certainly the service and the life of specialist
- 13:53Speaker 7: specstrum for sure, but we do kind of need to
- 13:56Speaker 7: know these things in the circumstances because this is how
- 13:59Speaker 7: we also to protect our National Guard going forward, to
- 14:03Speaker 7: making sure that they're trained for certain situations, including an
- 14:06Speaker 7: ambush situation like that, which you can't really prepare for,
- 14:10Speaker 7: you know, when it happens, but there's things you can.
- 14:12Speaker 5: Do, all right, quickly Interims this weekend.
- 14:15Speaker 7: This weekend, we're not seeing a whole lot of agendas yet,
- 14:17Speaker 7: so I don't know what to expect. All I know is, boy,
- 14:20Speaker 7: there are a lot of fundraisers for various members of
- 14:23Speaker 7: the Republican House of Delegates between Sunday and Monday. Like,
- 14:28Speaker 7: if you're a lobbyist here in Charles, then you'd better
- 14:31Speaker 7: get out your checkbooks because there's a lot of fundraisers
- 14:34Speaker 7: this coming weekend, all.

- 21:39Speaker 5: are they all? Local you?
- 21:40Speaker 8: Will and they all are volunteers, Also so we assigned
- 21:43Speaker 8: them a couple and they've met now and they'll start
- 21:46Speaker 8: scheduling their practice and they kind of do that on their.
- 21:49Speaker 8: OWN i try not to get in the middle of,
- 21:50Speaker 8: practice but they'll pick what days and for how, long
- 21:53Speaker 8: and they'll talk about what music they like and dance
- 21:56Speaker 8: styles they, like and they'll come up with the Perfect.
- 21:58Speaker 5: Now did you say that they all are in one
- 22:00Speaker 5: dance Or? Okay so what did was that reveal last?
- 22:03Speaker 6: Night they.
- 22:04Speaker 8: DON'T i let them pick.
- 22:05Speaker 5: It, okay we don't assign, them so they're not all
- 22:08Speaker 5: doing the. Same, no, okay that's WHY i took.
- 22:10Speaker 8: That, Sorry, no they all get to pick their own
- 22:12Speaker 8: so they literally talk about what they. LIKE i suspect,
- 22:15Speaker 8: that you, Know jeff's a. Golfer there might have something
- 22:17Speaker 8: to do with golf in their. Routine you just never.
- 22:20Speaker 6: Know but that's.
- 22:21Speaker 5: What oddly, enough we were hear TO Tj meadows as
- 22:23Speaker 5: a as the dancing.
- 22:24Speaker 8: Golfer you, well he might have to find himself on the, list.
- 22:31Speaker 7: Would you?
- 22:31Speaker 5: Like but here's the, thing and you you, KNOW i
- 22:34Speaker 5: have talked about this in the. Past people, say if
- 22:35Speaker 5: you contact these people and they, say, hey guess. What
- 22:37Speaker 5: you've been nominated to do, this what's the first thing
- 22:40Speaker 5: you hear, is, OH i don't dance Or i'm a terrible.
- 22:42Speaker 5: Dancer and you to, that you always say, WHAT i don't.
- 22:44Speaker 12: CARE i don't.
- 22:45Speaker 8: Care it's not why you were. Asked it's not why
- 22:47Speaker 8: you would be. Asked we asked for a lot of, reasons.
- 22:50Speaker 8: Right we asked because we think they're great community, leaders
- 22:53Speaker 8: and that they would be somebody who would understand The
- 22:56Speaker 8: United ways mission and, work and that they because they
- 22:58Speaker 8: literally wear our brand for five. Months we want to
- 23:00Speaker 8: make sure you know that they're out there for the right.
- 23:03Speaker 8: Reasons and then they Say i'm too, busy to WHICH
- 23:05Speaker 8: i also, REPLY i don't. Care everybody's.
- 23:07Speaker 4: Busy margaret's.
- 23:08Speaker 5: Hardcore and there's.
- 23:10Speaker 8: This misnomer that nobody tells me, no And i've just
- 23:12Speaker 8: set the record straight on your. Show that's a. Lie
- 23:14Speaker 8: lots of people tell me, no but the right. People
- 23:17Speaker 8: and we literally pray about. THIS i mean that the
- 23:19Speaker 8: right people will say, yes and it turns out that,
- 23:21Speaker 8: way and they work super. Hard we assign them each
- 23:24Speaker 8: couple to try to raise twenty thousand dollars and they
- 23:28Speaker 8: last year each couple raised over.
- 23:29Speaker 5: Fifty so that's the goal is twenty yep and every
- 23:33Speaker 5: couple raised over. Fifty.
- 23:35Speaker 8: Yes and you can see the leaderboard if you want
- 23:37Speaker 8: to take a look at our. Website so if you
- 23:39Speaker 8: go to the Unit Away's Central West virginia dot, org
- 23:41Speaker 8: you can already start to see that votes came in
- 23:44Speaker 8: last night as soon as the announcement was, made and
- 23:47Speaker 8: tables and tickets for the event are on sale. Now
- 23:49Speaker 8: so if you're, interested you can also do that through
- 23:50Speaker 8: the website or and can give us.
- 23:51Speaker 6: A call to.
- 23:52Speaker 5: Office it's a nine thirty one. Again we're talking To
- 23:54Speaker 5: margaret O'Neil for The United wave Of Dave Island show
- 23:56Speaker 5: on five eighty. Live brought to you part By Bridge
- 23:58Speaker 5: Valley community Of Technical, College Insurance agents And demand of
- 24:00Speaker 5: the state and all across the. Country Bridge valley can
- 24:03Speaker 5: help me take that first step their insurance Pre Sales licenser.
- 24:05Speaker 5: Course we'll get you ready to set in for the
- 24:07Speaker 5: state Required property And Casually Insurance Licenser. Exam start your
- 24:11Speaker 5: career in this ever growing. Field check Out Bridge valley
- 24:13Speaker 5: THAT eedu for. Details Bridge Valley committee Of Technical. College
- 24:16Speaker 5: your career starts. Here what kind of fundraisers do they?
- 24:18Speaker 5: DO i, MEAN i know they do BECAUSE i knew
- 24:20Speaker 5: a good friend of mine participated a couple of years
- 24:22Speaker 5: ago and he had like a bourbon tasting kind of an.
- 24:26Speaker 5: Event so what are some of the fundraisers over the
- 24:29Speaker 5: years that people have.
- 24:29Speaker 8: Done it's really really. Creative so this Coming sunday is
- 24:32Speaker 8: an event With santa for. Kids Santa's workshop is going
- 24:35Speaker 8: to be At Rock city That jackline and her partner are.
- 24:37Speaker 8: DOING i suspect there'll be some sports related. Things so
- 24:40Speaker 8: some couples do a Super bowl square thing that you,
- 24:43Speaker 8: can you, know buy square and if your team gets
- 24:46Speaker 8: in that, square you could win some. Money we see
- 24:47Speaker 8: that with the final. Four we had A master's party
- 24:50Speaker 8: last year that was super. Fun that was the weekend
- 24:53Speaker 8: before The masters and it was very golf. Themed there
- 24:56Speaker 8: are often bourbon. Tastings sometimes they're just parties where they
- 25:01Speaker 8: invite their. FRIENDS i think there'll be A christmas party
- 25:03Speaker 8: before the month is over where people will pay a
- 25:05Speaker 8: little bit to come to a Friends christmas party and
- 25:08Speaker 8: those proceeds will come back to the unit. Away so
- 25:10Speaker 8: they get very creative and they really it brings their own, personality,
- 25:13Speaker 8: right stuff they like to do and they turn that
- 25:15Speaker 8: into a. Fundraiser so we've seen. Everything paint. Parties last
- 25:20Speaker 8: year there was A Redneck, riviera which was. Nice the
- 25:22Speaker 8: first TIME i have got to wear my pajamas to an,
- 25:24Speaker 8: event which was super. Fun usually it's, heels so it's you,
- 25:27Speaker 8: know it's a little bit of. Everything Pink Pony party
- 25:29Speaker 8: last year based around that. Song the dangers get really,
- 25:33Speaker 8: creative but we just remind everybody it's all for the
- 25:36Speaker 8: good of the.
- 25:36Speaker 13: Cause.
- 25:37Speaker 8: Right people often think or say to, me, oh it's
- 25:39Speaker 8: such a you, know it's a gala and you get
- 25:42Speaker 8: to do this and you get to do.
- 25:43Speaker 7: That this is a means to the.
- 25:44Speaker 14: End you.
- 25:45Speaker 8: Know when we raised over four hundred thousand dollars last,
- 25:47Speaker 8: year was our net proceeds from this event that allowed
- 25:50Speaker 8: us to do lots of good work in this community
- 25:52Speaker 8: and never in a year that we needed it more
- 25:54Speaker 8: with what we've just seen with the food. Crisis that
- 25:57Speaker 8: gave us a little bit of extra money that we
- 25:58Speaker 8: could get back out into the community and help the
- 26:00Speaker 8: pantries and help the. People so it is a fun,
- 26:03Speaker 8: event and we, love, love love that everybody participates and looks,
- 26:06Speaker 8: great but it's a means to the end of our
- 26:08Speaker 8: work and we really appreciate.
- 26:10Speaker 5: This AND i think it's also we need to give
- 26:12Speaker 5: a shout out to the people that are that are
- 26:15Speaker 5: doing the, dancing because this is a this is a
- 26:17Speaker 5: lot of time and energy and what you generally see
- 26:21Speaker 5: in situations like, this no matter what the fundraising endeavor, Is,
- 26:25Speaker 5: margaret you know, this it's usually the people that have
- 26:26Speaker 5: the least amount of time that are the ones that
- 26:29Speaker 5: step up and, say, Yeah i'll do. This their calendars
- 26:32Speaker 5: are pretty much already full, anyway and you're talking about business,
- 26:35Speaker 5: leaders business owners in many, cases people that have you,
- 26:38Speaker 5: know may not have an extra two hours a day
- 26:40Speaker 5: between one and three am to do, something but they're
- 26:43Speaker 5: the ones that, say, Yeah i'll do, this.
- 26:46Speaker 8: Yep and they value the work that we do and
- 26:48Speaker 8: they see the mission and so we love that. Part
- 26:50Speaker 8: and then you, know we really have gained long term
- 26:53Speaker 8: support from our dancers of the first four seasons AND
- 26:55Speaker 8: i said last, night the first four seasons here In
- 26:57Speaker 8: charleston for Our United ways raised over million. Dollars and
- 27:01Speaker 8: so if you think about that in terms of what
- 27:02Speaker 8: else could we do as a small staff to kind
- 27:05Speaker 8: of raise that extra. Money they literally are working for
- 27:08Speaker 8: us for five months and it is a big, endeavor
- 27:10Speaker 8: in a big, commitment and we don't we don't sugarcoat,
- 27:12Speaker 8: That we don't lie about.
- 27:13Speaker 5: That, yeah we tell you or you tell them a
- 27:14Speaker 5: help of, times but.
- 27:15Speaker 8: We absolutely support them one hundred. Percent our staff becomes
- 27:18Speaker 8: their support. Staff we help with tickets and you, know
- 27:21Speaker 8: all the design work on their logos and all the
- 27:23Speaker 8: things that they want their social media. Pages but what
- 27:26Speaker 8: makes it work for them is you all the community
- 27:30Speaker 8: do support. Them so you, know Like stephen was, Saying
- 27:32Speaker 8: i've already picked by, couple and sometimes people wait until
- 27:35Speaker 8: the night of and they vote for all six. Couples
- 27:37Speaker 8: but the voting piece is really the profit for, us
- 27:41Speaker 8: because it's literally a donation to the unit away in
- 27:43Speaker 8: the name of the couple that you love the most and,
- 27:46Speaker 8: so and you can vote for more than, one and
- 27:47Speaker 8: you can vote as often as you, want and it's
- 27:49Speaker 8: five dollars a.
- 27:50Speaker 5: Vote there you, go and again all that money goes
- 27:52Speaker 5: to the tax, Deductible, yes tax. Deductible. Yeah it's a
- 27:56Speaker 5: music to a lot of people's. Ears all, right give
- 27:57Speaker 5: us the dates of everything he has now that the
- 27:59Speaker 5: revealed already has already happened, there and you're going to be,
- 28:01Speaker 5: seeing if you're on social, media you're going to be
- 28:03Speaker 5: seeing a lot of these couples are going to be
- 28:04Speaker 5: hitting you. Up we've got this event going, on to
- 28:06Speaker 5: that going you, know going. On but take us over
- 28:09Speaker 5: the next couple of. Months they're going to be be working.
- 28:11Speaker 5: Out they'll be they'll be.
- 28:14Speaker 14: A.
- 28:14Speaker 5: Dancer one time was actually a daughter of a friend
- 28:16Speaker 5: of mine who was a. DANCER i referred to as.
- 28:17Speaker 5: Practice she, said we. Rehearse we. Don't we don't call it.
- 28:21Speaker 5: Practice football players. Practice we.
- 28:23Speaker 8: Rehearse and so they'll be rehearsing from now Until may the,
- 28:27Speaker 8: first which is the actual a lot of.
- 28:28Speaker 5: Rehearsal five.
- 28:29Speaker 8: Months they literally got almost exactly five months to make
- 28:32Speaker 8: it happen and get it. Done we'll be at the
- 28:34Speaker 8: beautiful you, Know Charleston coliseum and the actual dance, floor
- 28:39Speaker 8: and that makes it so much easier for. Us and
- 28:41Speaker 8: we love working with. Them they're a great, partner our ball.
- 28:44Speaker 8: Family you Saw sean in here a couple of weeks.
- 28:46Speaker 8: Ago continues to be the main, sponsor but we have
- 28:48Speaker 8: great People Huntington bank sponsors OF Vip party And wes
- 28:51Speaker 8: Virgin american sponsors Or West Virginia American Water sponts, sponsors
- 28:55Speaker 8: the red carpet. Sponsor so if you haven't ever, been
- 28:58Speaker 8: we do try to make it an, event you, know
- 29:01Speaker 8: and we have the date again from The may the First.
- 29:03Speaker 5: May of course we'll have you on plenty of.
- 29:05Speaker 8: Times social event of the.
- 29:06Speaker 5: Season is it's turning into. THAT i mean some people
- 29:09Speaker 5: sold out.
- 29:10Speaker 8: The last four years we've sold, out and so if
- 29:12Speaker 8: you're interested in a, ticket we encourage you to find a.
- 29:14Speaker 5: Way to make that. Happen and can you get the tickets?
- 29:16Speaker 8: Now a right sure can and tables are on sale.
- 29:19Speaker 8: Now front row tables are sold out after last, night
- 29:22Speaker 8: but we have second row. Tables all of our tables
- 29:24Speaker 8: seat ten, guests eighteen hundred for second, rows fifteen hundred
- 29:28Speaker 8: for third, rows and then fourth row and back are
- 29:30Speaker 8: one thousand, dollars so one hundred dollars a. Ticket basically
- 29:33Speaker 8: if you are coming as a couple or six, people
- 29:35Speaker 8: but we're going to make a table of ten for that.
- 29:38Speaker 5: Event and that's all on your, website right.

- 34:00Speaker 5: and thanks for joining us this. Morning you, Know, chief
- 34:02Speaker 5: it's very difficult to talk, ABOUT i, know but it is.
- 34:05Speaker 5: Worth it is worth not didn't Remembering Cassie johnson.
- 34:08Speaker 18: Absolutely and thank you for the invitation today to talk About.
- 34:11Speaker 18: Cassie it's hard to believe it's been five years because
- 34:14Speaker 18: it seems like yesterday for many of, us and it
- 34:17Speaker 18: is a somber day for, us and we definitely reflect
- 34:21Speaker 18: on everything that had happened that. Day but we always
- 34:27Speaker 18: keep in mind though that she left a legacy behind
- 34:30Speaker 18: that was filled full of compassion and, kindness and so
- 34:34Speaker 18: we try to we try to keep that in mind
- 34:38Speaker 18: as we as we go through these tough, times and
- 34:41Speaker 18: that keeps us going and definitely keeps the family. Going
- 34:45Speaker 18: we stay in contact with them and we talk about
- 34:47Speaker 18: her spirit all the. Time so definitely somber, day but
- 34:51Speaker 18: we definitely keep her legacy in.
- 34:52Speaker 5: Mind talk about the type Person Cassie johnson.
- 34:55Speaker 18: Was she was a great, person very kind. Heart she
- 34:58Speaker 18: had a tremendous, heart always willing to, serve always willing
- 35:02Speaker 18: to just jump in and, help you, know even apart
- 35:06Speaker 18: from her dedication as a police, officer she started off
- 35:09Speaker 18: as a humane officer, obviously you, know with the, city
- 35:11Speaker 18: and then she felt such a drive to continue to
- 35:15Speaker 18: serve in different, ways and so she really dedicated herself
- 35:18Speaker 18: to The Charleston Police. Department but even apart from, that
- 35:21Speaker 18: just her kind spirit and her heart just just made
- 35:23Speaker 18: her a very special.
- 35:24Speaker 5: Person and here's WHAT i AND i did not know
- 35:26Speaker 5: a patrol Officer johnson at, all BUT i will say
- 35:29Speaker 5: this WHAT i have learned in talking to folks from
- 35:32Speaker 5: your department and talking to. Her we interviewed her her
- 35:36Speaker 5: members of her family not long, ago And Metro new's
- 35:38Speaker 5: midday and talking to the mayor different, People Cassie. Johnson
- 35:41Speaker 5: from WHAT i have been able to, gather she was
- 35:44Speaker 5: a wonderful. Person if she never put on the, batch
- 35:48Speaker 5: no matter what she, did if she were working fast
- 35:50Speaker 5: food or, whatever she would still be that same person
- 35:53Speaker 5: that she.
- 35:53Speaker 18: Was you are absolutely, correct AND i had the privilege
- 35:55Speaker 18: of knowing her in her humane officer role and their
- 35:59Speaker 18: police officer.
- 35:59Speaker 15: Role.
- 36:00Speaker 18: YEAH i couldn't agree with you. More she just always
- 36:03Speaker 18: a kind person and LIKE i, said always willing to
- 36:05Speaker 18: jump in and to serve help wherever she.
- 36:07Speaker 7: Can.
- 36:07Speaker 5: Uh talk about that, Day, CHIEF i know it. Was
- 36:09Speaker 5: it's difficult to talk, about but kind of kind of
- 36:11Speaker 5: take us through that.
- 36:13Speaker 14: Day.
- 36:14Speaker 18: Yeah, so LIKE i, SAID i still remember like it was,
- 36:17Speaker 18: yesterday AND i still remember getting that call and rushing
- 36:19Speaker 18: to the, scene rushing to the your chief deputy at the, time,
- 36:21Speaker 18: RIGHT i was deputy chief, time and of course we're
- 36:25Speaker 18: we're one of the very first calls you know that
- 36:27Speaker 18: that go, out and you, KNOW i still remember it
- 36:30Speaker 18: like it was, yesterday and my heart. Sunk and, unfortunately
- 36:34Speaker 18: in that type of, role you can't really grief because
- 36:37Speaker 18: you're so in tune to what you need to do
- 36:40Speaker 18: to take care of.
- 36:40Speaker 5: Things And i've been told by first responders that grief comes. Later,
- 36:45Speaker 5: absolutely if you're doing your, job it's not it's not,
- 36:47Speaker 5: then but go, ahead.
- 36:48Speaker 18: Absolutely and many of us were out for several. Days
- 36:52Speaker 18: we didn't even go, home and so that was. Tough
- 36:55Speaker 18: it was a very tough several days to get. Through
- 36:59Speaker 18: but we're very resilient and we're very a close knit
- 37:03Speaker 18: family here AT. Cpd so, uh just being with other
- 37:06Speaker 18: officers and other people you know that that shared the
- 37:09Speaker 18: same grief with, me it just made it a little
- 37:11Speaker 18: bit easier to get.
- 37:12Speaker 5: Through so the, call IF i remember, correctly the calling
- 37:17Speaker 5: through that was parking somebody was it was it was
- 37:20Speaker 5: it was a complain about about. Parking that.
- 37:23Speaker 18: Correct, yeah someone was just like kind of parked in
- 37:25Speaker 18: the middle of garrison and just a simple non one one.
- 37:28Speaker 18: Call but you, know it goes to show you that
- 37:30Speaker 18: nothing is routine that that we go. Through and During cassie's,
- 37:34Speaker 18: investigation she found the person that that did park it
- 37:38Speaker 18: legally in just planing or asked him to move and
- 37:42Speaker 18: things escalated very quickly from that.
- 37:44Speaker 5: Point, yeah And Josha Joshua phillips was a, shooter later
- 37:48Speaker 5: convicted a second degree murder and sentenced to forty years in.
- 37:51Speaker 5: Prison AND i, Think, chief it says. Something i'm going
- 37:55Speaker 5: to try to say this the best most compassionate way
- 37:57Speaker 5: THAT i.
- 37:57Speaker 19: Can.
- 37:58Speaker 5: Uh her death came because he, fired, okay and then
- 38:05Speaker 5: she on Her and again bear with me out, here
- 38:09Speaker 5: on her way down she. Fired that is. Correct so
- 38:12Speaker 5: she even in her LAST i, mean of course she
- 38:15Speaker 5: passed a couple of days, later but even on her way,
- 38:18Speaker 5: down she was able to produce her her, weapon that is.
- 38:21Speaker 18: Correct, yeah and her. Training anytime we're faced with situations like,
- 38:26Speaker 18: yeah we revert right to our. Training and that's how
- 38:28Speaker 18: she was, trained of. Course and, yeah and she was
- 38:32Speaker 18: able to at least, attempt you, know to save her
- 38:36Speaker 18: own life at that, point and not only her, life
- 38:39Speaker 18: but possibly other.
- 38:40Speaker 5: Other people as. Well and AGAIN i, think AND i
- 38:42Speaker 5: heard you say that in a previous, interview The, chief
- 38:46Speaker 5: that there's nothing routine in the world of police. Work.
- 38:50Speaker 5: Uh AND i think that goes for all emergency, responders
- 38:53Speaker 5: no matter what there, are there's there's nothing. Routine and
- 38:55Speaker 5: if you look across the nation at people that have
- 38:58Speaker 5: tragically been killed Like Cassie johnson was a lot of
- 39:03Speaker 5: it didn't start out on what you see on, television you,
- 39:06Speaker 5: know like the Big hollywood production started out traffic stops
- 39:10Speaker 5: or like a speeding troll or a welfare check or
- 39:13Speaker 5: something like.
- 39:14Speaker 18: That absolutely, right it's all. Senseless it's senseless. Violence it
- 39:18Speaker 18: definitely did not need to. Happen and you, know And
- 39:21Speaker 18: cassie is just part of a huge law enforcement family,
- 39:25Speaker 18: nationwide AND i think it speaks volumes that her sacrifice
- 39:30Speaker 18: is what officers do every day across the. Nation so you,
- 39:35Speaker 18: know her sacrifice five years ago is should definitely let
- 39:39Speaker 18: people know that we're out. Here we're here to serve
- 39:42Speaker 18: no matter of the, dangers and we stand between good and.
- 39:46Speaker 18: Evil and even though these tragedies, happen we still put
- 39:50Speaker 18: on the uniform and when we come out every day
- 39:51Speaker 18: and work.
- 39:51Speaker 5: HARD i had you helped me facilitate an interview not long,
- 39:55Speaker 5: ago BECAUSE i know you guys were doing some recruiting
- 39:57Speaker 5: for The Charleston Police department trying to get to get
- 40:00Speaker 5: some new folks. IN i know all the law enforcement
- 40:01Speaker 5: agencies are in needed people right. Now i'm just kind
- 40:04Speaker 5: of curious when somebody applies to be an officer In,
- 40:08Speaker 5: charleston or let's just say that they're, hired and Is
- 40:11Speaker 5: Cassie johnson part of their? Training, now does her legacy
- 40:14Speaker 5: continue to just, say you, know we want to always
- 40:17Speaker 5: when we go out, there even though officer you may
- 40:19Speaker 5: not have known, her do they know her?
- 40:21Speaker 18: Story, absolutely we definitely share that. Story and with any
- 40:26Speaker 18: tragedy that we've, had we try to share those. Stories
- 40:29Speaker 18: not to create a, somber you, know a somber attitude with,
- 40:35Speaker 18: them but to let them, know, hey this job is,
- 40:38Speaker 18: dangerous and, yes look at the legacy that they've left.
- 40:40Speaker 18: Behind here's what they stood. For they stood between good and,
- 40:43Speaker 18: evil and that's what we're asking you to. Do, so,
- 40:47Speaker 18: yes we definitely do. That we definitely get them familiar
- 40:51Speaker 18: with them and what they stood. For and also just
- 40:54Speaker 18: from an officer safety, standpoint we let them, know, hey
- 40:57Speaker 18: this is what to look, for this is what to
- 40:59Speaker 18: do in these. Situation so her legacy lives on through, that.
- 41:03Speaker 5: And there's going to be COMMEMORATION i understand happening later.
- 41:07Speaker 5: Today talk about.
- 41:07Speaker 18: Them, Yeah So cassie's, family her mother and her sister,
- 41:11Speaker 18: specifically we're wanting to purchase a, bench a memorial bench
- 41:16Speaker 18: to put beside of her, gravesite just as a memorial
- 41:20Speaker 18: people can come and relax and sit down and reflect
- 41:23Speaker 18: on What cassie stood for and her. Legacy of, course
- 41:27Speaker 18: and through various donations from, corporations from personal donations you,
- 41:34Speaker 18: know of, course we appreciate all of those on behalf
- 41:37Speaker 18: Of cheryl And chelsea her, family and they were able
- 41:41Speaker 18: to purchase this. Bench and, yes today that marks the
- 41:45Speaker 18: five year. Anniversary we will help them dedicate that bench
- 41:49Speaker 18: at three o'clock.
- 41:49Speaker 5: Today and where is.
- 41:50Speaker 18: That it's out at the cemetery In. SYSTEMVILLE i think

- 42:07Speaker 5: pre if it's a personal family, thing then you, know
- 42:09Speaker 5: so be.
