- 0:04Vipul Bindra: Quintin, thank you for coming.
- 0:05Vipul Bindra: My friend, I really appreciate you finding the time and coming over.
- 0:10Vipul Bindra: It's always fun hanging out with you and, like we were talking, the purpose of this podcast I wanted to start for years is just to talk the conversations that I want to have with industry professionals so I can learn more.
- 0:23Vipul Bindra: Hopefully you learn something out of it and people watching will hopefully get any value out of it at least some entertainment hearing us goof off around for a couple hours.
- 0:33Vipul Bindra: So, like I said, thank you for coming.
- 0:34Vipul Bindra: I'm excited.
- 0:35Vipul Bindra: Um, how's things been, man?
- 0:38Quintin Sanders: um, things have been good.
- 0:39Quintin Sanders: You know, this year.
- 0:41Quintin Sanders: This time of the year, rather, is really thought-provoking for me.
- 0:50Quintin Sanders: You know ideas come to mind.
- 0:53Quintin Sanders: What do I want to do for the next 6, 12, 15 months?
- 0:56Quintin Sanders: So it's a little different.
- 0:59Quintin Sanders: The past few years I haven't had many new ideas of things I wanted to try, but it seems like two months ago, everything just do this, do this, do this, do this.
- 1:10Quintin Sanders: So it's now like trying to keep track of everything that I thought of and making it happen.
- 1:16Vipul Bindra: So what do you think made that switch?
- 1:20Quintin Sanders: Probably my work, the last 12 months probably, is what you know.
- 1:25Quintin Sanders: What did it um?
- 1:27Vipul Bindra: because this last year, you know, yeah, it was vastly different from any other year in fact you've been traveling a lot doing work for the ministry, making videos all over the world.
- 1:36Vipul Bindra: I mean, it's sometimes to be real.
- 1:39Vipul Bindra: I kind of get you know, I'm not jealous of that many people, but I do get envious.
- 1:42Vipul Bindra: I'm like oh quentin's getting paid to, because you know I get paid to travel a lot, but it's always in the us.
- 1:46Vipul Bindra: You, on the other hand, I'm like going to these countries getting these new experiences.
- 1:51Vipul Bindra: So I got a little envious but I'm happy for you.
- 1:52Vipul Bindra: Man.
- 1:53Vipul Bindra: How was that compared to previous years?
- 1:55Quintin Sanders: uh, um you know, traveling the whole world, learning I think, um, before I wasn't really into traveling much.
- 2:05Quintin Sanders: You know I could care less what you know other countries are doing.
- 2:09Quintin Sanders: Like I'm cool here in America, right, but going different places and seeing how different people live, how they view Americans, how to interact with people you've never really met before, I thought that was cool.
- 2:24Quintin Sanders: Doing the work is always fun.
- 2:27Quintin Sanders: But there was this one project this year that challenged me in a different way.
- 2:34Quintin Sanders: So I think I told you before, but the ministry that I was working with is doing something different.
- 2:43Quintin Sanders: They were doing all of their initiatives in one place, and so the idea was to make a doc all of it.
- 2:53Quintin Sanders: And so person in charge goes hey, we're going to do this and you're going to do this, this and this, and also, just because you know the way timelines worked out, it's like you're going at week one or whatever.
- 3:10Quintin Sanders: And he goes well, could you go earlier?
- 3:15Quintin Sanders: Well, it was kind of both of our ideas to go earlier.
- 3:18Quintin Sanders: So I'm like, yeah, I'll go earlier.
- 3:19Quintin Sanders: And so I'm producing, shooting, directing all of it, and I'm in country for the first two and a half weeks by myself.
- 3:27Quintin Sanders: Well, with a partner with Santa.
- 3:30Vipul Bindra: But, I was the one in charge of which.
- 3:33Vipul Bindra: By the way, we know somebody named Santa.
- 3:36Vipul Bindra: His actual name is Santa, I got to have him on the podcast.
- 3:39Vipul Bindra: Man, we can just talk two hours.
- 3:41Quintin Sanders: If you want a world traveler, he is the world traveler.
- 3:44Quintin Sanders: It was very obnoxious at the airport the way he would operate versus the way I would operate.
- 3:49Quintin Sanders: I'm dressed comfortably, ready to get on a 13, 14, 16-hour flight.
- 3:56Quintin Sanders: He's dressed like he's going 30 minutes down the road.
- 4:01Vipul Bindra: I guess he's used to it then, yeah.
- 4:03Quintin Sanders: Right, but it's not what you would think.
- 4:04Quintin Sanders: Two-piece suit oh wow, cummerbund.
- 4:09Quintin Sanders: I feel like he had on at some point and then when we went into the lounges that he has access to, he's looking for a partner at the airport or something the, the lounges that we went into.
- 4:19Quintin Sanders: I could understand why he was dressed that way.
- 4:21Quintin Sanders: Oh, we're talking about, like the new centurion lounge that opened up in atlanta that lounge.
- 4:27Quintin Sanders: I felt like I didn't make enough to go in there, which is crazy, because you make pretty good money yeah, yeah but but yeah, I know, I see it.
- 4:37Vipul Bindra: Yeah, because the people, um, you know, I've been, I've been told about lounges like so much by so many people.
- 4:44Vipul Bindra: I don't know why.
- 4:45Vipul Bindra: It's just my mental state is like I just go, you know, one stop to next stop to step top.
- 4:50Vipul Bindra: Maybe this year I'll try and change my attitude and maybe because I do have priority pass and everything.
- 4:55Vipul Bindra: I just have never bothered to really go to lounges and stuff.
- 4:57Vipul Bindra: But you know it'd be nice especially with the amount of time I spend at the airport.
- 5:01Quintin Sanders: I think it's Orlando's airport that doesn't really make you want to because you're so close to home.
- 5:07Quintin Sanders: It's like TSA pre-check, clear, all of it.
- 5:11Quintin Sanders: So it's like show up 30, 45 minutes before your flight.
- 5:14Quintin Sanders: Yeah.
- 5:15Quintin Sanders: You walk right on through to your gate.
- 5:18Vipul Bindra: And you're not worried about it.
- 5:19Vipul Bindra: Plus.
- 5:20Vipul Bindra: Plus we don't even have a Centura lounge or anything.
- 5:23Vipul Bindra: No, but I mean there are other lounges at the airport.
- 5:25Quintin Sanders: But I think here it just doesn't make you want to, but other places it's like well, you got a four-hour layover, especially like an airport like Atlanta.
- 5:34Vipul Bindra: It's horrible.
- 5:35Quintin Sanders: Yeah.
- 5:36Vipul Bindra: Sorry, anyone watching.
- 5:38Quintin Sanders: But, yeah, I hate that airport.
- 5:39Quintin Sanders: So going there I was like, yeah, okay, now enough of lounges.
- 5:42Quintin Sanders: Um, yeah, no, the traveling this year, the things it's been, it's been cool.
- 5:47Quintin Sanders: Um, seeing different places, experiencing some things, challenging myself in different places, you know, shooting on a new camera platform that you know.
- 5:58Quintin Sanders: So I think that was that was cool and yeah you, welcome to the welcome to the gang.
- 6:05Vipul Bindra: You finally switched to fx6 there, which is funny.
- 6:06Vipul Bindra: I only switched to sony a few years ago, but it was a massive change and it was definitely worthwhile for business.
- 6:11Vipul Bindra: Um, what was your reasoning?
- 6:13Vipul Bindra: Was it just a this project with the ministry?
- 6:15Vipul Bindra: Or I think well or just hearing all of us talk about it, like what made you want to finally get one?
- 6:21Quintin Sanders: I realized.
- 6:22Quintin Sanders: I realized that sony for most people is the standard these days.
- 6:29Quintin Sanders: However, you know me and black magic, we're tight, yeah.
- 6:34Quintin Sanders: And so, um, I knew that sony would probably be a good business move we spoke about on the phone, but I just wasn't sure.
- 6:43Quintin Sanders: And so when this project came up and it was like, hey, you get the camera, it gets rented, probably pays itself off, I'm like, well, I can't really say no to that exactly yeah, because money.
- 6:57Quintin Sanders: Money's either coming to me or someone else yeah exactly so.
- 7:01Quintin Sanders: That's why I switched.
- 7:01Quintin Sanders: But I realized realized spending two months in Uganda shooting that, that I don't know of many other cameras that I could have shot with and got what I got.
- 7:13Quintin Sanders: You know, like sure we can shoot with anything and really get something that looks good, but standing in the back of a truck filming another truck going 80 miles an hour down the road is probably not the easiest thing to do.
- 7:28Quintin Sanders: But sony's autofocus kind of made it exactly easier to do just like everyone else.
- 7:34Vipul Bindra: You know, years ago I was filmmaking stops.
- 7:36Vipul Bindra: I was like, oh, autofocus, who needs that?
- 7:37Vipul Bindra: You know, I was very much panasonic at that time.
- 7:39Vipul Bindra: Gh4, gh5s, eva lens, all whatever they had.
- 7:42Vipul Bindra: And trust me, as soon as my and then I switched to canon, I turned, I bought a bunch of c200s, I'm telling you.
- 7:50Vipul Bindra: I turned that on and I was like what have I been doing?
- 7:53Vipul Bindra: Because it's not like the.
- 7:54Vipul Bindra: Um.
- 7:54Vipul Bindra: Uh, you know, autofocus has its use, is what I'm saying.
- 7:58Vipul Bindra: When I finally actually got a good working autofocus, I was like, oh you know, this can actually be a beneficial thing.
- 8:04Vipul Bindra: It doesn't make it any less you know um of you, of a filmmaker of you.
- 8:09Vipul Bindra: So it's incredible.
- 8:10Vipul Bindra: So you would say you've got your roi back.
- 8:12Vipul Bindra: Has the camera paid for?
- 8:13Vipul Bindra: So, yes, and how long did you own it?
- 8:15Vipul Bindra: Hold on, hold on, we're gonna touch that.
- 8:17Vipul Bindra: You've owned it for how many months?
- 8:20Vipul Bindra: uh six so in six months a six grand camera has paid for itself.
- 8:26Vipul Bindra: I mean, that's tell hey, can you say that for any black magic camera?
- 8:31Vipul Bindra: no see, that's my point.
- 8:34Vipul Bindra: I don't even like and see again controversial take.
- 8:36Vipul Bindra: I personally don't like sony cameras.
- 8:39Vipul Bindra: However, switching to sony was one of the best business decisions because, from what I hear, either clients don't give a crap about what you're using, or they want Sony on the mid to low end, or they want Alexa on the high end.
- 8:51Vipul Bindra: They don't want, in the corporate and commercial world, reds and black magics and canons anymore.
- 8:57Vipul Bindra: Very rarely I've had one request for Canon, like three years.
- 9:00Vipul Bindra: You know, either they didn't care or they specifically were like we want to use canon and I've never heard anyone ask for a black magic camera.
- 9:07Vipul Bindra: I personally like black magic equipment.
- 9:09Vipul Bindra: You know I have eight time so just sitting here.
- 9:12Vipul Bindra: I have nothing against black magic but it just doesn't make the money.
- 9:15Quintin Sanders: At least that's what I found in the field that I work in I would say, okay, not in six months did my cameras pay themselves off.
- 9:24Quintin Sanders: But I'd say actually some have, and the way I operate in procuring equipment is a little different than other people and so, yeah, most of my camera gets paid off 12, 15 months at the most, because I'm not paying full price for anything yeah, you're probably buying used and you're also making smart decisions, obviously that, and we can get into, obviously, the business side of you, which is good.
- 9:51Vipul Bindra: But what I'm saying is normally I'm very much like buy whatever camera they all produce about decent image, nowadays it doesn't really matter.
- 9:58Vipul Bindra: But if you want to get hired on other productions, if it's all your productions, it doesn't matter.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Buy you a big system, buy you whatever you like, who cares?
- 10:07Vipul Bindra: Buy you an iPhone put in a big box, I mean, who knows what's inside of that?
- 10:11Vipul Bindra: But but I do think if you are going to get hired in the corporate world, fx6 is the best investment you can make, and then maybe an FX3 is a B camera and I think you can pretty much do most talking, hand B roll type of rolls that you get, or travel or conferences or any of that.
- 10:28Vipul Bindra: Would you say that now that you've used it, you think it's versatile enough to do all that?
- 10:34Quintin Sanders: I mean, I'm sitting here thinking between another FX6 and FX3.
- 10:39Vipul Bindra: Yeah, which is a good thought process.
- 10:41Quintin Sanders: Yeah, so that's where I'm at, and the only reason I'm going back and forth between the two and not just getting another FX6, which is my first idea is because traveling, you know, the Ethiopian airport is not the easiest to bring gear into.
- 11:01Quintin Sanders: Yeah, Tell me about that story because that was interesting to me okay, so basically we flew in and we had, you know, serialized all of our equipment and we're going through so they wanted you to do it, or you guys did it just to safety well, the way we got approval to bring certain things in like a drone into the country.
- 11:24Vipul Bindra: Oh, so you got to get approval.
- 11:26Quintin Sanders: So the governing body said, hey, do all these things.
- 11:31Quintin Sanders: We did all those things.
- 11:32Quintin Sanders: We figure we're going through.
- 11:33Quintin Sanders: Hey, no problem, we go through our secondary screening that you know all airports and other places do.
- 11:40Quintin Sanders: And they're like I'm to the side, they look through all of our stuff.
- 11:43Quintin Sanders: We give them the list.
- 11:44Quintin Sanders: We're like I'm to the side, they look through all of our stuff, we give them the list.
- 11:46Quintin Sanders: We're like, hey, cool, no problem.
- 11:46Quintin Sanders: Letters with official seals on it, everything.
- 11:48Quintin Sanders: And they still take inventory.
- 11:50Quintin Sanders: They say, hey, we're going to take everything for the night come back in the morning, pick it up.
- 11:57Vipul Bindra: Gives me nightmares thinking about parting with my video equipment.
- 12:02Quintin Sanders: Now I mean it's customs.
- 12:03Vipul Bindra: so it's not like joe schmo, but still yes and yeah, you don't have a choice at that point right.
- 12:10Quintin Sanders: So it's like what you do, you have to do it, and so come back the next day and they're like oh, by the way, uh, this is going to be 22 000, just to get 22 us yes, thousand dollars and okay, it wasn't just come back the next day.
- 12:25Quintin Sanders: This is the amount it was.
- 12:27Vipul Bindra: Come back the next day, spend all day in the airport Still didn't, and you didn't have to shoot that day looking right, okay Still didn't get any answers.
- 12:35Quintin Sanders: I had to go back a third day, and it wasn't until that we got everything situated.
- 12:41Quintin Sanders: Now, mind you, by that third day I was supposed to be already halfway across the country.
- 12:45Quintin Sanders: Yeah, but I had to wait to get this all situated, and so we basically got half of the equipment out and were still able to do everything we needed to do.
- 12:57Vipul Bindra: So you could only get half because you only wanted to pay half.
- 13:00Vipul Bindra: That's basically.
- 13:01Quintin Sanders: Right, so the available money for everything that needed to be done was like what makes the most sense?
- 13:07Quintin Sanders: Okay, ten thousand makes the most sense, so we paid that to get production company?
- 13:12Vipul Bindra: obviously I know it wasn't your money, but did the ministry or the production company get the 10 grand back or no?
- 13:16Vipul Bindra: Did they keep that?
- 13:18Quintin Sanders: last I heard they were still working on it.
- 13:22Vipul Bindra: Oh my goodness, let's see, this makes me not want to complain, because I do sometimes complain.
- 13:26Vipul Bindra: Traveling so much makes me not want to complain because my worst, my problem, is the airline gonna let me pre-board versus.
- 13:33Vipul Bindra: That sounds like a nightmare, uh, having to deal with plus the the idea that you don't even have all the equipment you brought there.
- 13:42Quintin Sanders: Uh, because they want exorbitant money to I would say, though, that the, the drone was definitely a red flag for them, even though we had different permissions um the dollar amount of the equipment, because, basically they see everything you have, they're like oh, it's video equipment, okay, we're gonna take it, go through it, yeah.
- 14:00Quintin Sanders: And once they looked up everything to give me a number they realized how much everything costs and they're like wow yeah.
- 14:08Vipul Bindra: Do you think it could have been um better for the production company or the ministry to just rent equipment locally?
- 14:15Vipul Bindra: Or no especially once they found out they needed to do all this, extra steps to to bring the equipment it depends on what you can source locally, and I mean the way that they usually do things.
- 14:25Quintin Sanders: It's like not sourcing anything in country, bringing it all in so that you know you have it yeah and most times, most scenarios, you don't have that many problems.
- 14:32Quintin Sanders: I would say, though, that probably the fx3 wouldn't have given as many problems to me in that situation, because that's what I'm thinking about getting into this?
- 14:43Quintin Sanders: yeah, no, makes sense but this is the first time, like we're just gonna go all fx6s, why not?
- 14:49Quintin Sanders: Yeah um, so yeah, I mean between me and the person that I traveled with we had four fx6s, okay, and the other guys who were coming in separately also somebody else adam oh adam oh Adam.
- 15:04Quintin Sanders: Yeah, so he had two in his case, I had two in mine.
- 15:07Quintin Sanders: Now I did have a Pelican case and we know sometimes those will attract unwanted attention in different countries, but because I had already spent two months with cameras on my back in Uganda and this trip was not too far after I'm like I really don't want to do that again.
- 15:24Quintin Sanders: Yeah cameras on my back in uganda and this trip was not too far after.
- 15:26Quintin Sanders: I'm like I really don't want to do that again yeah, but should have now.
- 15:27Quintin Sanders: Would that have helped?
- 15:28Quintin Sanders: I don't know, because these cases all went through the same x-ray machine anyway, so they may have probably pulled you.
- 15:35Vipul Bindra: Yeah, that that I have heard of stories.
- 15:37Vipul Bindra: I have not been through a scenario like that, but, uh, that's what makes me very you know, uh, about international travel, to be real again, I'm such a focused into corporate and commercial work that I don't really get that many requests.
- 15:50Vipul Bindra: Now I do have international clients, but they come from their country here and hire me obviously, so I haven't had that experience.
- 15:57Vipul Bindra: But that just gives me, even, like I said, thinking about it, nightmares.
- 16:00Vipul Bindra: And, like I said, you don't have that much of a choice at that point because you know you're here to to make content, you're, you know you have to do what you have to do, um, but that's, that's um, you know anyway, nightmare of a situation but on your side, at least it wasn't your money, right?
- 16:16Quintin Sanders: so basically yeah, yeah, so you're not as worried about it.
- 16:20Vipul Bindra: Um good, when, when you know you're the shooter, I guess I'm at the production company.
- 16:25Vipul Bindra: I'm like, oh, that'd be, that'd be a nightmare, but awesome.
- 16:29Vipul Bindra: But at least you got a great experience out of it, right?
- 16:32Vipul Bindra: You went to all these countries.
- 16:33Vipul Bindra: You met all these people, tried their food.
- 16:35Vipul Bindra: Did you like it Anything?
- 16:37Quintin Sanders: Um, I'm not a foodie, so I really kept it safe with the food I tried just because, like you said, if they do their job, get sick you can't work.
- 16:47Vipul Bindra: Yeah, exactly.
- 16:48Vipul Bindra: And so I kept it simple with things that I'm familiar with things that you can't really mess up, no matter where you go, you know, so Were you eating pizza?
- 16:58Quintin Sanders: I did.
- 16:59Quintin Sanders: Here's the thing Everyone knows by now who has gone.
- 17:02Quintin Sanders: I'm trying the pizza there.
- 17:03Quintin Sanders: I'm not expecting it to be good.
- 17:05Quintin Sanders: However, I'm going to try it.
- 17:07Vipul Bindra: That's the only thing that I experimented with what's the weirdest thing they had on pizza Any topping that you saw at least on the menu that you were like what that makes no sense Pepperoni.
- 17:19Quintin Sanders: Okay, they'd say pepperoni, but it wasn't pepperoni.
- 17:22Quintin Sanders: It's whatever they decided.
- 17:23Quintin Sanders: Pepperoni was depending on where you were.
- 17:26Vipul Bindra: Oh wow.
- 17:26Vipul Bindra: So it's not even pepperoni, huh no something else.
- 17:30Vipul Bindra: Interesting.
- 17:32Quintin Sanders: Some other sliced leaf and meat that they chose.
- 17:36Vipul Bindra: That just means pepperoni there, basically.
- 17:37Vipul Bindra: Wow, did any country give you ketchup with your pizza?
- 17:41Vipul Bindra: I've seen that happens internationally.
- 17:43Vipul Bindra: No, they give you their with your pizza.
- 17:44Quintin Sanders: I've seen that happens internationally.
- 17:46Quintin Sanders: They know their pizza with ketchup, no, but there's been some really thin pastes that are like barely anything, and then there's been some really rich, you know sauce that's not really sauce.
- 17:58Vipul Bindra: So so you can't even trust on your regular pizza.
- 18:02Vipul Bindra: Yeah, to find safe food man at least I would have had great time, because I love ethiopian food, like we're talking about.
- 18:08Vipul Bindra: I would have loved to um, uh, you know eat actual ethiopian food in ethiopia, which luckily we're in orlando, so we have some good ethiopian restaurants where we can get decent, you know I've tried like the, the, the meats, like steak.
- 18:23Quintin Sanders: I always try steak and it's usually safe enough to eat well for my person um, so I'll always try the steak and one or two different things and I'll find a few things that work and just eat that for the week or two that I'm there, for the three, four, five, six, seven weeks that I'm there, um, and I also bring snacks.
- 18:44Quintin Sanders: You know, half my suit, half of one suitcase, is full of snacks.
- 18:47Quintin Sanders: Full of snacks.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Look at that nobody gave you customs, didn't give you a problem.
- 18:50Speaker 3: For that they want half your chocolates.
- 18:52Speaker 3: You know bribery I would have given it but I'm telling you that's what I've learned.
- 18:58Vipul Bindra: You know, on as a producer side, that's exactly what I've learned.
- 19:01Vipul Bindra: You know, it doesn't matter what you're paying anyone, if they don't have good food or good snacks, at the end of the day they're not liking the production.
- 19:07Vipul Bindra: So that's just.
- 19:09Vipul Bindra: It is just what it is like.
- 19:10Vipul Bindra: I still remember, uh, the first production we did together.
- 19:13Vipul Bindra: Julie packed the snacks because she was a producer and I think she put like, uh, uh, I don't remember what, but you were like did you pack this for your kids or something?
- 19:22Vipul Bindra: I, something like that, you said, and I was like what?
- 19:25Vipul Bindra: Because you're like there's apples and you know bananas or whatever, like actual fruit in there.
- 19:29Vipul Bindra: I thought it was healthy, but you weren't happy about it.
- 19:31Vipul Bindra: Do you remember that?
- 19:32Vipul Bindra: It's been a while, though?
- 19:34Vipul Bindra: I know it was two, three, three years ago, maybe at least even more.
- 19:37Quintin Sanders: I don't remember exactly how that went, but sounds like something I would say.
- 19:40Quintin Sanders: And in that situation, no, I would have probably been fine with it.
- 19:44Quintin Sanders: But it was just a little surprising to me, because most guys you know when you, when they call you and say, hey, I need you for a shoot, you know you're going, you're going to do the shoot.
- 19:54Quintin Sanders: Now I have people who will buy lunch after, but not bring snacks for the shoot.
- 20:00Quintin Sanders: Um, now, that's something I like to do myself now yeah, um, but yeah no, there's not a lot of people that do that, oh interesting.
- 20:09Vipul Bindra: No, I find like, like I said, that's my experience, if you bring snaps, people happy I'm always happy.
- 20:13Vipul Bindra: Now I won't bring it for like a half day shoot.
- 20:15Vipul Bindra: You know, if it's like a quick do a talking head or like the ones we've done like kia center, whatever, like obviously I'm not bringing snacks, they won't let us take them in anyway.
- 20:23Vipul Bindra: But yeah, anything I'm doing longer.
- 20:25Vipul Bindra: Um, I'll bring some kind of snacks.
- 20:27Vipul Bindra: Obviously belches is a you know thing among filmmakers for some reason but anyway any kind of snacks just because I find the crew is happier when you have some kind of snacks for them to to have, especially during the downtime, because, like you said, food you know, can sometimes be a rare thing, even though obviously I'm ready.
- 20:46Vipul Bindra: I've planned for lunch a lot of times shoots are running behind lunch is delayed or whatever, but even then I try to at least when we do get to lunch, um feed everyone, something that you know everyone likes, because I again I wanted the crew to be happy as long as you have a beverage of my choice, for me i'm'm good, which is what?
- 21:05Vipul Bindra: What's your choice of beverage?
- 21:06Vipul Bindra: Huh Beer.
- 21:07Vipul Bindra: No I don't know, I'm just kidding.
- 21:12Quintin Sanders: I don't consume alcohol.
- 21:14Vipul Bindra: Oh, that's good to know.
- 21:15Quintin Sanders: I mean you can count.
- 21:16Quintin Sanders: I was thinking about it the other day.
- 21:17Quintin Sanders: I was like you can count, probably on one hand, the amount of times per year that I would drink alcohol same thing.
- 21:23Vipul Bindra: Same.
- 21:23Vipul Bindra: Uh, that's awesome.
- 21:23Vipul Bindra: I didn't.
- 21:24Vipul Bindra: Uh, it sounds like we have something talked about.
- 21:26Vipul Bindra: But yeah, same for me.
- 21:27Vipul Bindra: I don't.
- 21:28Vipul Bindra: I don't really like to drink now.
- 21:29Vipul Bindra: I will networking events.
- 21:30Vipul Bindra: I'll socially, yeah, socially but even then, I'm just walking around with the same thing for all night you know, maybe a sip or two, but I'm not, I don't.
- 21:37Quintin Sanders: I don't really like to drink either, so that's awesome I mean, for me it's it makes me drowsy, yeah, so I'm like I don't want to be drowsy, so so what it was.
- 21:46Vipul Bindra: So what is your beverage of choice?
- 21:48Vipul Bindra: What makes you happy?
- 21:49Quintin Sanders: and said you're not sponsored.
- 21:50Quintin Sanders: You're not sponsored by anybody.
- 21:51Quintin Sanders: No, no, we don't peddle anything on this podcast.
- 21:54Vipul Bindra: I'm not trying to sell anything.
- 21:55Vipul Bindra: This is free entertainment.
- 21:57Vipul Bindra: Slash education for anyone, if so, from people who are actually I have I have.
- 22:02Quintin Sanders: I actually have like my preferences, but I also also have my.
- 22:05Quintin Sanders: Don't give me that.
- 22:06Quintin Sanders: So, Zephyr Hills water, don't give me that?
- 22:11Vipul Bindra: What about Dasani?
- 22:11Vipul Bindra: Everyone for some reason needs Dasani.
- 22:13Vipul Bindra: Dasani is fine for me.
- 22:15Quintin Sanders: I'm thinking about the bottles that are in the stores in New York.
- 22:18Quintin Sanders: You know you got Poland Spring.
- 22:19Quintin Sanders: You know you can.
- 22:21Quintin Sanders: If you, if you give me a bottle of poland spring water on the floor to shoot, I'll kiss you um, but you know the smart water, you know well the decent.
- 22:30Vipul Bindra: So I've had people say water.
- 22:32Vipul Bindra: Look at clinton, you're like no, I don't want, just water, I want now there's specific water don't give me sparkling water.
- 22:38Quintin Sanders: I don't do that, but I'll do a seltzer, you know that's sweet.
- 22:43Vipul Bindra: I mean seltzer, that's sweet.
- 22:44Vipul Bindra: A little sweetness to it, um but you know that's sweet.
- 22:45Quintin Sanders: I mean seltzer is that's sweet, a little sweetness to it.
- 22:46Quintin Sanders: But you know, I mean Red Bull is always a welcome thing.
- 22:51Vipul Bindra: You know, just you know normal Coke, whatever.
- 22:54Quintin Sanders: But, don't give me a Coke Zero, I don't want it.
- 22:57Vipul Bindra: I'm addicted to these.
- 22:57Vipul Bindra: I need this.
- 22:59Quintin Sanders: Yeah.
- 22:59Quintin Sanders: When you said, hey, do you want a Coke Zero, I Do you want a Coke Zero, I said no, I'll take water instead.
- 23:03Vipul Bindra: See, it's like the hardest thing, right?
- 23:04Vipul Bindra: I want a Coke but I don't want all that sugar.
- 23:06Vipul Bindra: That's the closest thing, because Diet Coke is not the same thing.
- 23:08Vipul Bindra: I know people love it, but anyway that's the closest thing for me and I'm kind of addicted.
- 23:14Vipul Bindra: I'm trying to get away from them, you know, but that's like the way I get my caffeine nowadays.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Anyway enough about but drinking which we're not even talking about real drinks, so it sounds like you had an incredible year.
- 23:27Vipul Bindra: Financially, you're doing really good comparatively to.
- 23:30Vipul Bindra: You know what we've talked about, like you're doing incredibly.
- 23:35Vipul Bindra: You traveled the world, you bought the camera that has demand and now you're also….
- 23:40Quintin Sanders: A lot more than that, a lot more than just the camera.
- 23:43Quintin Sanders: So, since it sounds like this is where you're also, a lot more than that, a lot more than just the camera.
- 23:45Quintin Sanders: So, since it sounds like this is where you're going, anyway, this year I think I've probably bought a lot of equipment that I know won't even pay itself off for another two years, but that that's in mind because I know there's some building to the new customer base that I'm looking for, and so I know it's not going to happen tomorrow.
- 24:09Vipul Bindra: Okay.
- 24:10Quintin Sanders: So I have the expectation that, hey, some of this stuff.
- 24:12Vipul Bindra: So, besides the FX six, what is that?
- 24:14Vipul Bindra: Give me some some name.
- 24:17Quintin Sanders: I mean, since you're not allergic to black magic, here we go.
- 24:21Quintin Sanders: No, I love black magic, here we go.
- 24:22Quintin Sanders: No, I love black, so in total resolve is the best.
- 24:24Quintin Sanders: In total now I have three broadcast ursas.
- 24:27Quintin Sanders: I'm looking to get two more.
- 24:28Quintin Sanders: Um, I obviously have, you know, a pocket cinema camera, six hair pro, whatever.
- 24:34Quintin Sanders: Um, thinking about getting a few more of those.
- 24:37Quintin Sanders: The studio space we spoke about, so I'm looking to get into some of those studio cameras, okay, um, they're going all into black magic I'm all in.
- 24:46Quintin Sanders: Yeah, I'm already.
- 24:47Quintin Sanders: You were already in, but now you're going even more in yeah, um, on the back end, you know, different switches the constellation before me to me so essentially all into the live production anything besides live that you bought or no this year minus the fx6 anything else not really
- 25:04Vipul Bindra: yeah, so so tell me this, uh, obviously, yes, so, exactly where I was going, you knew it.
- 25:09Vipul Bindra: So you're, you're into live production, right, and obviously you're going all into that, which is amazing, by the way, I love that, I love live production.
- 25:16Vipul Bindra: Luckily, uh, and you know this story, but people haven't heard it.
- 25:20Vipul Bindra: But I uh, literally before the pandemic pandemic hit well, at least, uh, mainly, it hit, you know, april when the whole america shut down, whatever.
- 25:30Vipul Bindra: So in january, this is um, at least we hadn't heard about the pandemic in america.
- 25:35Vipul Bindra: So I go um to julia.
- 25:36Vipul Bindra: I'm like, look, you know, obviously we're doing really great.
- 25:39Vipul Bindra: We started this production company.
- 25:40Vipul Bindra: Things are getting here's next for us.
- 25:42Vipul Bindra: So you know, like you know, you're thinking something like this year this is january, beginning of year I'm like we're gonna get into live production.
- 25:48Vipul Bindra: Interesting, that's random.
- 25:50Vipul Bindra: But I'm like, yep, that's what I'm doing.
- 25:51Vipul Bindra: So I called into my partner I think adorama was where I was purchasing most gear at that time.
- 25:56Vipul Bindra: So I called the person I, he made a huge investment, I bought all the equipment and, uh, you know, obviously learned myself, because I didn't know anything about live production at the time, just watching videos and stuff, and guess what happens everything shows that everything shows up but what people need.
- 26:12Vipul Bindra: So, while other people were like, oh, I, I don't know what to do, and I'm like, oh, we're killing because we're doing this.
- 26:17Vipul Bindra: So it's kind of the timing couldn't have been better, and so at that year, obviously 80 of my work was mostly live, I would say.
- 26:24Vipul Bindra: What's crazy, though, is when I thought the demand would go away, like the pandemic went away, we'll go back to regular production.
- 26:30Vipul Bindra: We did go back to regular production, but live just never went fully away.
- 26:34Vipul Bindra: So I still have been doing 40, 45%, I would say, of my work in live.
- 26:39Vipul Bindra: We still do a lot of live events.
- 26:40Vipul Bindra: So that's incredible to me.
- 26:43Vipul Bindra: You're going all live in live, you know, into live.
- 26:47Vipul Bindra: So what?
- 26:48Vipul Bindra: What brought your love for that, or why are you going all in?
- 26:52Quintin Sanders: well, why am I going all in?
- 26:54Quintin Sanders: Because if not now, then when you know you can talk about all you want, but if you don't do it, then you're just talking about it for the rest of so purchasing.
- 27:03Quintin Sanders: This year went all in, but I've been incrementally working towards that personally with equipment.
- 27:09Vipul Bindra: So take me back though.
- 27:10Vipul Bindra: When did you start and why, or av, or whatever you want to I think for a lot of people it started in church.
- 27:18Quintin Sanders: Uh, close to 10 years ago, you know.
- 27:21Quintin Sanders: Actually, yes, it started in church and school, high school, um.
- 27:25Quintin Sanders: So you know, it was more of the theater club thing.
- 27:30Quintin Sanders: Basically, tech was always a thing for me.
- 27:33Quintin Sanders: And so when getting involved in the tech at the school um, you know, learning how to use lights, you're learning how to do audio and everything in the school and auditorium there's only a few of us that knew how to do it.
- 27:47Quintin Sanders: So basically we were default for any events.
- 27:51Quintin Sanders: And so when theater club was like they're doing a performance this year, the person in charge was like you guys are now part of the theater group.
- 27:58Quintin Sanders: I was like, no, we're not.
- 28:00Quintin Sanders: I was like, yeah, no, you are, because you are the only ones who can do this.
- 28:03Quintin Sanders: And I was like, yeah, no, you are because you are the only ones who can do this.
- 28:05Quintin Sanders: And so that kind of got me interested into live event tech.
- 28:08Quintin Sanders: And then, you know, I forgot what phone it was at the time, but you know, I had a camera and I'm like, okay, I'm going to put this camera in the back of the church, I'm going to film it, and so I did that and that got me interested.
- 28:21Quintin Sanders: Then, at the same time, I'm like, okay, like, okay, you know, this is the year I want to buy a camera, and the t3i was maybe like this was 2014, 2014, and so t3i was old at that point already, but it was still decent enough.
- 28:38Quintin Sanders: And so I'm like, okay, I think I want a t3i.
- 28:40Quintin Sanders: At the time, everyone on youtube was saying buy a t3i.
- 28:42Quintin Sanders: So I'm like, okay, I'm gonna get a t3i.
- 28:43Quintin Sanders: And so I time, everyone on YouTube was saying buy a T3i.
- 28:44Quintin Sanders: So I'm like, okay, I'm gonna get a T3i.
- 28:45Quintin Sanders: And so I had two jobs that summer and I was saving, and a friend of mine who is a drummer and was also in tech and everything else.
- 28:55Quintin Sanders: His brother had an extra camera that he wasn't using and so his brother, let me borrow that camera.
- 29:02Quintin Sanders: It was a Panasonic Handycam, but it had a 4k what year was it?
- 29:07Quintin Sanders: 2014 oh he gave me the camera and the tripod, didn't ask any questions.
- 29:14Quintin Sanders: I said here, you can use it.
- 29:16Quintin Sanders: He didn't tell me two weeks, three weeks, he just said here, use it.
- 29:20Quintin Sanders: So I was using that.
- 29:21Quintin Sanders: And then I bought a t3i so I had two cameras.
- 29:23Quintin Sanders: Um, just using it, practicing with it and, you know, trying to film anything I could get my hands on.
- 29:30Quintin Sanders: You know, dancing, church stuff, whatever yeah and, um, going to live concert stuff, I'm like, okay, I want to do that, now I want to be the guy behind that camera, so, working on finding you know, how do I get to be that guy?
- 29:46Quintin Sanders: Um, and then getting to that point where I was that guy and doing those, um, you know, different corporate conferences and different events, and then I'm like, okay, I'm gonna be that guy now, the guy who's directing.
- 30:02Quintin Sanders: So how do I get to be that guy?
- 30:03Quintin Sanders: I the guy who's directing.
- 30:04Quintin Sanders: So how do I get to be that guy?
- 30:06Quintin Sanders: I'm like, well, now I got to figure out how to be that guy and so that's kind of the way I've operated is I want to do this.
- 30:12Quintin Sanders: How do I do this?
- 30:13Vipul Bindra: Yeah.
- 30:13Quintin Sanders: Work to doing this.
- 30:14Vipul Bindra: Essentially, that's an incredible journey, though, by the way, my first Canon camera 2012 T4i you know, I remember how expensive that was to me.
- 30:24Vipul Bindra: At that time I was like, oh, you know, I also had a job, so this was a side freelance thing.
- 30:29Vipul Bindra: So I was like, oh, this is, it's so expensive.
- 30:31Vipul Bindra: And now that I think about it that's like come on uh, but you know again time but it was incredible that's.
- 30:36Vipul Bindra: That's where I learned all the autofocus, all the stuff, and then I left it, obviously because it wasn't that good back in the day, and then penasonic.
- 30:43Vipul Bindra: But uh though, that's incredible, man, hearing your journey and makes sense why you would be into life, because that's what got you into it um you're one of the few people that I know that's like all in alive, so that's incredible.
- 30:56Vipul Bindra: So what's your?
- 30:56Vipul Bindra: What's next for you?
- 30:57Vipul Bindra: So I know you told me you're planning to build a space.
- 31:00Vipul Bindra: You're planning to build this van.
- 31:01Vipul Bindra: How, how did that come about, like you know?
- 31:05Vipul Bindra: Tell me your future vision.
- 31:06Vipul Bindra: How are you envisioning?
- 31:08Quintin Sanders: So I realized that everything I want to do can be done.
- 31:13Quintin Sanders: The question is, can I do it all myself?
- 31:16Quintin Sanders: And I was like, yeah, I can, but it might take longer, or I can pull people in.
- 31:21Quintin Sanders: And so, you know, doing what I do, I meet different.
- 31:27Quintin Sanders: We meet all types of different people.
- 31:29Quintin Sanders: But doing corporate AV, live event type stuff, I noticed that usually I'm like the only black dude there, and so I'm like, eh, I need to meet more people.
- 31:44Quintin Sanders: And so I met this one dude on one event and it was a little different because it was like there was two of us.
- 31:51Quintin Sanders: And so we got to talking and we realized we had a lot of similar interests in what we wanted to do.
- 31:58Quintin Sanders: And so we thought of this idea of coming up with a nonprofit-profit teaching high school students live broadcast production, right, um.
- 32:07Quintin Sanders: And so it was just an idea at the time.
- 32:10Quintin Sanders: He kind of went with it and he started, you know, doing things to make that happen, and while I'm also doing things to make other things happen, and we're like what if we had a vehicle?
- 32:24Quintin Sanders: And so that was always the idea.
- 32:25Quintin Sanders: But he's always traveling for work, like the things he's directing.
- 32:29Quintin Sanders: You know people see it, they just don't know who's doing it.
- 32:34Vipul Bindra: When you say vehicle, you're thinking like a broadcasting van yes, Not like what I have, which is like a driven production van Now yeah, so a broadcast vehicle, and so we're like it'd be cool if we get one.
- 32:44Vipul Bindra: That's next for me, so I don't need it anymore.
- 32:47Vipul Bindra: If you build it, I could just get yours.
- 32:48Vipul Bindra: There you go, so we spent.
- 32:49Quintin Sanders: We spent eight.
- 32:50Quintin Sanders: We spent eight months going back and forth talking about this, that and the third seeing what the budget could be, and so he just one day decided to.
- 32:58Quintin Sanders: He bought a bus at auction.
- 33:03Vipul Bindra: Like a school bus, no just a passenger bus.
- 33:06Vipul Bindra: A passenger bus.
- 33:07Quintin Sanders: Okay, Like the type you would see like handicapped disabled people use.
- 33:12Quintin Sanders: So he bought one of those and we're just going to retrofit it, deck it out.
- 33:18Vipul Bindra: Ooh, that's a new one.
- 33:19Vipul Bindra: I've not seen that.
- 33:20Vipul Bindra: Right?
- 33:20Vipul Bindra: So you're going to retrofit like a bus.
- 33:23Vipul Bindra: That was like an accessible bus.
- 33:25Vipul Bindra: Right, you're going to convert it to like a broadcast van.
- 33:29Vipul Bindra: That's because I live view everything you know.
- 33:31Vipul Bindra: Whatever you need fiber.
- 33:32Vipul Bindra: Yes, oh, that sounds exciting.
- 33:34Quintin Sanders: So at the same time that we're doing that, someone he connected me with had a space that came available, and so we're also in the process of outfitting that space to become a a broad a broadcast space that people can come and film podcasts and stuff like that, okay and at the same time there's a separate space that can be used for photography or anything you want but no, you're, so you're going the studio route have you run any roi calculations?
- 34:06Vipul Bindra: or like, hey, here's what we need to do to make this work, or whatever.
- 34:09Vipul Bindra: Like are you, are you looking at the business side of it?
- 34:12Vipul Bindra: Or you're just like, hey, we got the space, we're gonna make it work.
- 34:15Vipul Bindra: Like, have you?
- 34:15Vipul Bindra: I'm trying to get to like down to the numbers.
- 34:18Vipul Bindra: Have you worked any numbers with this space, or no?
- 34:20Quintin Sanders: um, this was a a thing that came available that was like, if we don't do it, it's just going to sit anyway.
- 34:28Quintin Sanders: And so now the the number breakdown, we haven't fully went into because this is not going to be a long-term uh thing yet this is a second test this is a test to see if if it could work, because I really didn't have any interest of doing any yeah owning or operating a studio physical space.
- 34:48Quintin Sanders: But I'm like, okay, we have 12 months of this space.
- 34:51Quintin Sanders: Can we make this work, yes or no?
- 34:53Quintin Sanders: Okay, and it's like you can go for it and try it, or you can say in 12 months, man, I wish I just would have done it.
- 34:59Quintin Sanders: Yeah, exactly, and so why?
- 35:01Vipul Bindra: not same thing.
- 35:03Vipul Bindra: You know, for years I've tried to have my space and I could make the numbers work.
- 35:06Vipul Bindra: So when this opportunity came, I was like, no, I gotta do space.
- 35:08Vipul Bindra: And look, now we're having this podcast together and we wouldn't be had I just, you know, again been like, oh, it's not the space I want.
- 35:15Vipul Bindra: So, no, that's incredible, man, I'm excited and I what I love is that you went for it.
- 35:20Vipul Bindra: That's that's what it's about, you know, because, same thing, like, it took me years to go for it, but when I did, it was the best decision ever.
- 35:27Vipul Bindra: I will not go back and you know, like I said, that's one of the best decisions in my life was to go all full time into video and, uh, that's incredible that you know you're on this new journey.
- 35:37Vipul Bindra: Um, why, why is such a pivot, though?
- 35:40Vipul Bindra: Like, uh, why are you doing this now?
- 35:43Vipul Bindra: Like, because you, like I said you had great time traveling the world, making money.
- 35:48Vipul Bindra: Why not continue that?
- 35:49Vipul Bindra: Why come back to live again?
- 35:51Vipul Bindra: What would you like?
- 35:52Vipul Bindra: Obviously, I know I get that, but what else?
- 35:54Vipul Bindra: There has to be something more.
- 35:59Quintin Sanders: There's.
- 35:59Quintin Sanders: I have a list of things that I want to do right.
- 36:03Vipul Bindra: In production.
- 36:04Quintin Sanders: No, I mean okay, list of things that I want to do right in production, in production.
- 36:05Quintin Sanders: No, I mean okay, it's so like, for example, going back, it was like, hey, I want to be the guy behind the camera, I want to be the guy directing fine um, there's still some types of events that I want to do more often.
- 36:16Quintin Sanders: Um, like this last year I was on a show that I was a camera op for and the guy had a broadcast trailer and I'm like, okay, I want to get a broadcast vehicle Now.
- 36:31Quintin Sanders: I've been wanting that for about two years now, but I'm always patient and recognizing that I can't rush into it, but I don't want to take forever either.
- 36:39Quintin Sanders: So when the right opportunity comes, take it.
- 36:41Quintin Sanders: So, when the right opportunity comes, take it.
- 36:42Quintin Sanders: And so when this came about and we were all talking, it was like, yeah, let's go for it now.
- 36:47Quintin Sanders: We may not have it all figured out, but if we don't do it now, when?
- 36:53Quintin Sanders: So?
- 36:53Quintin Sanders: That's kind of my new mantra If not now, then when?
- 36:57Quintin Sanders: So it's not a large investment that needs to be put into it either.
- 37:04Vipul Bindra: These are just low-cost things.
- 37:05Quintin Sanders: I mean low cost could be relative.
- 37:06Quintin Sanders: You already have all the broadcast government right.
- 37:08Vipul Bindra: You've been for years building.
- 37:10Vipul Bindra: I've seen your photos of your racks and everything.
- 37:12Vipul Bindra: They're incredible and they're hyper focused to the type of work you want to do.
- 37:16Vipul Bindra: So you just have to put it in a place, make it just put it into work, yeah so that's incredible, but it seems like, um, obviously the other part of this that I want to touch on is I'm obviously wary of partnerships, like I have awesome friends that you know feel, talk, whatever, it's the same thing, but when you go into a business relationship, it's different than friendship, right?
- 37:34Vipul Bindra: So how are you structuring this, or do you have any thoughts on this or whatever, like going into actual business?
- 37:42Quintin Sanders: with somebody you know.
- 37:42Quintin Sanders: So, technically, if we, if we separate all of it, um, the broadcast vehicle was purchased by one person and so at this point it's a.
- 37:59Quintin Sanders: It's a mutually beneficial partnership in the sense that most of the equipment that's putting that will be put onto.
- 38:06Quintin Sanders: It is mine, the vehicle is his, and so when you break down the numbers, the investment into the vehicle is less than the equipment that we're putting into it.
- 38:17Quintin Sanders: So it's it's almost a 50-50 split.
- 38:20Quintin Sanders: But this vehicle is going to be used for mostly nonprofit reasons.
- 38:27Quintin Sanders: So we worked it out so that eventually this, that vehicle, will be run specifically by the nonprofit itself, and so there will be no cost to operate it, maintain it or anything like that, because the idea is to have grants providing all of that for the vehicle, and that's the thing that we'd be doing as that service.
- 38:47Quintin Sanders: Um, and when it's not doing that, then yes, we can use it for other things.
- 38:52Quintin Sanders: But this is really a good test run to see what the next platform is for the ob vehicle.
- 38:59Quintin Sanders: And so this first one is yes, let's do it, and let's do it for the reasons we wanted to, and it wasn't business, it was a passion.
- 39:03Quintin Sanders: Let's do it, and let's do it for the reasons we wanted to, and it wasn't business, it was a passion of let's teach this to high school students, and so that's the money we invested into it is for that reason.
- 39:15Quintin Sanders: So this is not a business.
- 39:17Quintin Sanders: First idea the bus, the OB vehicle.
- 39:21Quintin Sanders: Now the next one will be.
- 39:23Quintin Sanders: This first one is let's do it.
- 39:27Vipul Bindra: Make it happen.
- 39:27Quintin Sanders: Let's make it happen and let's put it out there and do what we said we were going to do, which is teach high school students broadcast.
- 39:34Vipul Bindra: Yeah exactly.
- 39:35Quintin Sanders: So let's do it While we're sitting here talking about it.
- 39:38Quintin Sanders: Let's do it, and then, in the process of doing that, we're going to use that to help us refine what we want in an actual business broadcast vehicle.
- 39:49Quintin Sanders: Not to say that we couldn't use it for business now, but that one is not, yeah, necessarily 100 intended for that purpose.
- 39:57Quintin Sanders: Now, us putting all the work into it, we can use it for that yeah, are you going um.
- 40:02Vipul Bindra: So are you going to just focus on this?
- 40:03Vipul Bindra: Are you going to still continue to do, obviously, freelance?
- 40:05Vipul Bindra: Oh yeah or travel and all that.
- 40:08Quintin Sanders: So all the all the other things are still being done, but these are just, yeah, more things that are coming up and it's like I haven't.
- 40:15Quintin Sanders: I've been super focused on just one or two things a year, but this year I'm like I'm going for all of it.
- 40:22Quintin Sanders: You know like yeah, exactly because you know, as, as I thought about, like how I started, where I started, I'm like it's been about 10 years.
- 40:35Quintin Sanders: So I'm like what do I want the next 10 to be like?
- 40:36Quintin Sanders: And I wouldn't try all these things to see where I want the next 10 years to be.
- 40:44Vipul Bindra: Exactly.
- 40:44Vipul Bindra: And what I love is like I say you're going for it instead of you going thinking about it.
- 40:49Vipul Bindra: You know calculating, whatever you're just going for.
- 40:52Vipul Bindra: It seems like you also have the perfect partnership because you have someone who has, like you said, the vehicle.
- 40:57Vipul Bindra: You have the equipment, you have a.
- 40:59Vipul Bindra: You know something to do with it because you know you could go teach high school kids how to do it.
- 41:03Vipul Bindra: So you have a, you know audience.
- 41:06Vipul Bindra: You have b, you know the equipment.
- 41:08Vipul Bindra: C you have the vehicle to do.
- 41:09Vipul Bindra: You have everything, like I said in front of you.
- 41:11Quintin Sanders: So had you not taken the opportunity, it would have been a big mess and you know the the goal is to get grants to operate that thing right.
- 41:19Quintin Sanders: So in order to get grants, they tell us they want to see that nonprofit in work already.
- 41:25Quintin Sanders: They want to see the initial investment already made.
- 41:28Quintin Sanders: Okay.
- 41:29Quintin Sanders: And so that's what we're done.
- 41:30Quintin Sanders: That's what we have done Now.
- 41:32Quintin Sanders: We've done it.
- 41:32Quintin Sanders: We've done the program itself on a small scale it's like 10, 12, 15 kids but this will allow us to do more.
- 41:43Vipul Bindra: So is this a new nonprofit or is this one already existing?
- 41:48Quintin Sanders: I mean it's new relatively in how I mean it's new.
- 41:51Quintin Sanders: It's only been technically incorporated in operation for a year, okay, but half of that year has been spent developing the processes, the teachings and how we want to do everything.
- 42:08Quintin Sanders: And so we have students from two local churches that we're doing programming with, but the idea is to have it all put together in another six months so that we can do it in schools and different places.
- 42:24Vipul Bindra: More people in the industry.
- 42:25Quintin Sanders: I love that and that's why the space that came available makes sense, because you can tie it all together right, yeah, you know, you can even bring students to your space, right?
- 42:36Quintin Sanders: That's exactly yeah, that's so.
- 42:38Quintin Sanders: It's all come, it's all together and it's like we could go in six months.
- 42:42Quintin Sanders: Man, we wish we had done that part, so it's just going for all of it and you know I mean, what's the worst that could happen?
- 42:49Vipul Bindra: yeah, well, here's the worst that I'll talk about next.
- 42:52Vipul Bindra: How do you manage time?
- 42:54Vipul Bindra: Because you're talking about running a like helping this non-profit, running a live business, running travel video business, running, you know your freelance business, your media company and you have a family.
- 43:06Vipul Bindra: How do you manage it all?
- 43:08Vipul Bindra: You have a kid, right.
- 43:09Vipul Bindra: So how do you manage it all, uh, and still stay sane.
- 43:14Vipul Bindra: That's why time management.
- 43:17Quintin Sanders: That's why working with others is important.
- 43:19Quintin Sanders: Um you know it as well as anyone else that you can't do everything yourself.
- 43:24Quintin Sanders: Yeah, no, you can't do anything yourself, and so just having different people that can help and it's pushed me to think in a different way.
- 43:32Quintin Sanders: It's pushed me to think more operationally, more analytically.
- 43:35Quintin Sanders: In certain areas, like I'm very tech, you know, as a live video engineer, I'm like I'm thinking you big.
- 43:44Quintin Sanders: But this has made me really think about certain details of very small things that I really don't really care about, but I have to now to make it work.
- 43:55Quintin Sanders: So that's, that's the plan on how to make it work, how to balance everything.
- 44:00Quintin Sanders: I don't know, I don't um, there's times where I'm I'm out to 10, 12, 1am, you know 2.
- 44:13Quintin Sanders: I get home.
- 44:14Quintin Sanders: There's times where I was out of the country for two months, then another four weeks, another three weeks.
- 44:24Quintin Sanders: How do you balance it all?
- 44:30Vipul Bindra: Just try to have people who understand and people who you like working with.
- 44:31Vipul Bindra: Yeah, really at this point, uh, how do you?
- 44:32Vipul Bindra: Handle that with your, with your kid because you know that's the hardest thing for me, you know, and is just traveling.
- 44:37Vipul Bindra: You know leaving your family like leaving my kids and especially I don't know if your kid does it.
- 44:41Vipul Bindra: But my girls are like daddy don't go.
- 44:44Vipul Bindra: And then that, you know, that kind of melts my heart.
- 44:46Vipul Bindra: I'm like, uh, you know how much I love video production.
- 44:48Vipul Bindra: Obviously there's part of me that you know obviously wants to go to these cool shoots.
- 44:51Vipul Bindra: But then the other part of me is like, oh, you know, I don't want to disappoint my kids, so I try to pay obviously a lot of attention when I am home, you know, taking them to the obviously we live in entertainment capital of the country taking them to theme parks, going out to e or whatever you know.
- 45:05Vipul Bindra: So how you handling that, is your kid like that?
- 45:09Vipul Bindra: Or, if not, like, how are you managing being a good dad while you know, somehow managing all the stuff that you're you're doing?
- 45:18Quintin Sanders: so how do I manage it?
- 45:21Quintin Sanders: That's a good question.
- 45:21Quintin Sanders: I don't know if I'm doing the best job ever, but I think for our family one, my son has autism and so it's a little different.
- 45:32Quintin Sanders: He's nonverbal, so he's not going to be saying hey, don't leave, he's not going to say anything.
- 45:38Quintin Sanders: So that's a catch-22, because you want that as a parent, you know, but you don't get it.
- 45:48Quintin Sanders: So that's one thing.
- 45:49Quintin Sanders: Two, being gone is a little difficult, also because you know faith's time is a thing now.
- 45:56Quintin Sanders: It wasn't 20, 30 years ago.
- 45:59Quintin Sanders: But even then it's still difficult because, yeah, we're looking at each other yeah he's not saying much um so it's just having a good family that understands that.
- 46:10Vipul Bindra: Yeah, it's funny.
- 46:12Vipul Bindra: It's not funny, but I've known you three years.
- 46:13Vipul Bindra: I didn't know about that, that your son was autistic, so that's crazy that you're then that makes it even harder, I think, you leaving so that's crazy, man, I'm really, like I said, I'm really, like I said, amazed that you're doing this, because I know how hard it is for me to do this and you're doing more than I am, I think.
- 46:32Quintin Sanders: So it's that and you know.
- 46:34Quintin Sanders: You know when I'm home OK, I'm not going to say when I'm home I'm home, because when I'm home I'm always thinking about other things also.
- 46:41Quintin Sanders: But you know, I recognize after reading a bunch of Facebook groups that, like, autistic adults don't have it easy.
- 46:51Quintin Sanders: So I'm like, okay, I need to be doing as much as possible to make that easy in 20 years, and me sitting at home all the time is not the way to do it at the moment, you know, because a lot of work comes from other places, so I don't know, it's it's difficult.
- 47:07Quintin Sanders: Um, having a good partner helps, you know, because a lot of work comes from other places, so I don't know, it's difficult.
- 47:09Quintin Sanders: Having a good partner helps, you know, she understands work needs to happen and because I'm working, she gets to be with him all the time.
- 47:20Quintin Sanders: So it's like you can't have it both ways.
- 47:23Quintin Sanders: I don't think, at least right now.
- 47:26Quintin Sanders: For me you can't have it both ways.
- 47:28Quintin Sanders: But that's another reason why I'm trying all these different things, because the more things you're trying, the more chances you have of those things working out.
- 47:36Quintin Sanders: The more things you have in the pot, the less time you may have to be on a plane right, so I mean that's.
- 47:42Vipul Bindra: That's another reason so you're trying to say, is your ultimate goal retirement?
- 47:46Vipul Bindra: Is that?
- 47:48Quintin Sanders: Yes, I mean well no, because I love what I do and so I plan to, like I, meet dudes out on shows and events that are like in their early 60s.
- 48:02Vipul Bindra: I'm like man, I want to be so you're like me, Because I'm like I want to do this as long as I can do it.
- 48:06Vipul Bindra: I love it, Right, which?
- 48:08Quintin Sanders: is why I don't do certain things.
- 48:09Quintin Sanders: I'm not going to be the dude that's lifting up all this weight Like, don't worry, I got it.
- 48:14Quintin Sanders: No slow down.
- 48:15Quintin Sanders: Yeah, you know, 40 years ago, the dummies who did that.
- 48:19Vipul Bindra: Yeah, they are the ones who need to retire, right.
- 48:22Quintin Sanders: And so stuff like that.
- 48:24Quintin Sanders: I'm trying to work smarter, not harder, so that I can do this a long time, um, but also do it so that there's enough available.
- 48:34Quintin Sanders: So as my son grows up, it's not going to be as difficult for for him to maneuver and operate, because it seems like things aren't going to get any easier for anybody?
- 48:48Quintin Sanders: Yeah, and so there needs to be something there to make it manageable so that they seems like things aren't going to get any easier for anybody.
- 48:53Quintin Sanders: Yeah, and so there needs to be something there to make it manageable so that they all the output that we do as as people you know, he doesn't have to do that much.
- 49:00Quintin Sanders: Yeah, you know 50, 60, 70%, but at least he has that extra 30% that's there to help, yeah, Um, so that's that's why I'm doing everything I'm doing at the frequency I'm doing.
- 49:11Quintin Sanders: I think I could be doing more honestly Wow, and so you know that's.
- 49:18Quintin Sanders: That's why.
- 49:19Vipul Bindra: It makes me I thought I was working a lot.
- 49:21Vipul Bindra: You make me feel like I'm late.
- 49:23Quintin Sanders: I mean, but you are working a lot so.
- 49:25Vipul Bindra: Yeah, but, man, I feel like you're doing more than me.
- 49:28Vipul Bindra: But that's no.
- 49:29Vipul Bindra: I'm actually very happy.
- 49:30Vipul Bindra: I love people.
- 49:31Vipul Bindra: You know I'm very family Family's first for me, and obviously my love for video production.
- 49:35Vipul Bindra: But I'm so glad you're thinking ahead.
- 49:37Vipul Bindra: You're thinking about the future of your kid and you know what the needs are going to be now, because that's exactly the approach that you need to take.
- 49:46Vipul Bindra: I'm amazed when I hear so many parents who are like you know, didn't think about that, and then you know it's too late.
- 49:52Quintin Sanders: So you're thinking now and when you have time and you can, you know prepare, yeah, but I mean, I don't know, I only have one kid so I can only think one way.
- 50:01Quintin Sanders: But I would assume that kids, that who don't have certain disabilities, they're like yeah, no, they'll figure it out.
- 50:09Quintin Sanders: Like your kid is okay.
- 50:11Quintin Sanders: Okay, being relative, yeah, if your kid can do most things, they'll be fine.
- 50:18Quintin Sanders: Yeah, you just teach them.
- 50:21Vipul Bindra: You say that, yeah, but I find the system, now that I'm looking at it, like again two kids.
- 50:25Vipul Bindra: I watched the education they're getting and everything, and they go to supposedly really nice school, but what I'm seeing is, you know, the system's designed to, like, make worker bees.
- 50:38Vipul Bindra: You know they're designed for people to get out, get jobs, you know provide, you know pay taxes and all that.
- 50:42Vipul Bindra: And I'm like, no, they're not teaching anything but entrepreneurship.
- 50:44Vipul Bindra: And so I think parents do have to be very involved, especially if you want your kids to do uh, what we do, because you know, sure, obviously, like you said, there will be spark in some who will just go chase it no matter what, but there could be more entrepreneurs, more people inventing things if, uh, you know, because the schools aren't doing it, if the parents pay attention and focus on you know, putting that, that a spark in their kid, like, no, you can go do something, you can build something or I don't know, you can create something or at least put a team together who can do it.
- 51:13Vipul Bindra: You know, because you can be a leader too, either way.
- 51:16Vipul Bindra: What I'm saying is that that now comes down to, obviously, the parents, and so there is a lot that parents have to do um to get their kids to be like that.
- 51:27Vipul Bindra: You know, I don't know.
- 51:28Vipul Bindra: That's at least what I'm seeing.
- 51:30Quintin Sanders: Yeah, like I said it comes down to, in my opinion, it comes down to the teaching of the parents.
- 51:34Quintin Sanders: But for me, growing up, I wanted to do one thing I was six and that was be a cop.
- 51:42Quintin Sanders: Right, that was the thing.
- 51:44Quintin Sanders: You look at me in high school, you're like, definitely To the extent that you know, junior, senior year.
- 51:52Quintin Sanders: You like donuts Junior and senior year.
- 52:00Vipul Bindra: I'm joking.
- 52:01Quintin Sanders: When recruiters would come to the school, the thing that they would do is ask other students who else do you think could be interested?
- 52:07Quintin Sanders: And there's, I kid you not, there's at least 10 people who gave the recruiter my name.
- 52:12Quintin Sanders: He's like yeah, I had a bunch of kids.
- 52:15Quintin Sanders: Tell me, come talk to you.
- 52:16Quintin Sanders: I'm like yeah, but after realizing I should probably do college to get me to the end goal of being a cop instead of doing the military.
- 52:28Quintin Sanders: Um, then I went to college and I was like I don't want to do this either.
- 52:33Vipul Bindra: Um but what made you not want to be a cop?
- 52:35Vipul Bindra: When I moved here it seems like a lot of people thought you would be good yeah, no, my son.
- 52:41Vipul Bindra: Basically, that was the thing that made me decide not to do it um but yeah, interesting, you say that I think, from what I've heard again, I I don't that that.
- 52:48Vipul Bindra: I think, uh, from what I've heard again, I I don't that many cops, but uh, from what I've heard, that they have good insurance.
- 52:53Vipul Bindra: So that would have been, I guess.
- 52:55Quintin Sanders: Yeah, but that's not what I was thinking about.
- 52:56Quintin Sanders: I was thinking about the climate in which we live and, yes, growing up, where I grew up, uh, no one really cares about cops anyway where did you grow up?
- 53:08Vipul Bindra: new york oh, okay queens, new york, you know, south japan if anyone wants to know yeah, um, but yeah so they're the friendly ones though, at least whenever I get my experiences again traveling there.
- 53:21Vipul Bindra: But new york cops are we.
- 53:23Vipul Bindra: I don't know if we.
- 53:24Quintin Sanders: I don't think, I don't think we have enough time to go into all that.
- 53:27Quintin Sanders: Yeah, let's not do that, but I was a little different.
- 53:29Quintin Sanders: I was 100% yes, that's what I want to do, but also recognizing everything that happens and everything that's involved in that profession.
- 53:38Quintin Sanders: And so, even though I know everything about it from both sides, I still want to do it.
- 53:42Quintin Sanders: But after moving here, I always had it in my mind that that could be my.
- 53:48Vipul Bindra: What brought you to Orlando again, or Florida in general?
- 53:51Vipul Bindra: This is where Let me just Ooh, I feel like I hit a nerve or something.
- 54:03Quintin Sanders: I didn't want to move At first.
- 54:05Quintin Sanders: I didn't want to move.
- 54:05Quintin Sanders: Oh, you can talk shit about Florida.
- 54:07Vipul Bindra: No, at first I didn't want to move that first I didn't want to move.
- 54:08Quintin Sanders: Oh, you're going to talk shit about Florida.
- 54:08Quintin Sanders: No, At first I didn't want to move.
- 54:10Quintin Sanders: That's why I didn't answer that.
- 54:11Quintin Sanders: But to show you she wanted to move here because she grew up here.
- 54:17Quintin Sanders: Okay, and you know this is the way she said.
- 54:21Quintin Sanders: The school system here is great.
- 54:23Vipul Bindra: The education is great.
- 54:24Vipul Bindra: I don't know.
- 54:24Vipul Bindra: Okay, I love Orlando, but I don't know if I would go there.
- 54:29Quintin Sanders: And so that's why we moved here.
- 54:31Quintin Sanders: Well, she moved back, and I just came.
- 54:37Vipul Bindra: Oh, so you followed yeah.
- 54:40Vipul Bindra: And that's just because growing up in New York is like you don't want to move anywhere else.
- 54:44Quintin Sanders: growing up in New York is like you don't want to move anywhere else, but um yeah.
- 54:50Quintin Sanders: So now coming here and I realized these years later that I think it's probably Florida who's that's gotten me to this place, just because it's more inviting to self-employed, entrepreneurial people.
- 55:03Quintin Sanders: Now, being a wanting to be a cop, I had no want, need or desire to be entrepreneurial, right like I'm cool, living within system, operating, you know, cam up and being a cop, directing whatever, that's still a system and ultimately you're working for someone else anyway.
- 55:24Quintin Sanders: Yeah.
- 55:25Quintin Sanders: So, I'm cool with that, but this year totally different.
- 55:32Vipul Bindra: So has your opinion changed in Florida?
- 55:33Vipul Bindra: Because I know people have crazy, crazy opinions of Florida.
- 55:37Vipul Bindra: What do you think about Florida now, all these years later that you've been here?
- 55:41Vipul Bindra: Now you are a Floridian.
- 55:42Quintin Sanders: I'm not.
- 55:42Quintin Sanders: You're not a Floridian Relaxed now.
- 55:45Vipul Bindra: I mean your driver's license is Florida.
- 55:47Vipul Bindra: I still have a New York license also, oh what I keep that thing tucked away, just in case, okay, your expired license.
- 55:57Quintin Sanders: I can renew it anytime, you know.
- 55:59Quintin Sanders: But my thoughts of Florida, I mean, it's a decent place to live.
- 56:04Quintin Sanders: I suppose when I moved here people were like, yeah, things are going to be cheap.
- 56:07Quintin Sanders: No, no, I was place to live.
- 56:08Quintin Sanders: I suppose when I moved here people like yeah things are gonna be cheap.
- 56:10Vipul Bindra: I was further from the truth.
- 56:11Vipul Bindra: Um, first time I went to new york everyone was like I'll be ready, things are.
- 56:14Vipul Bindra: But again, to be real, I live in you know touristy, you know orlando, whatever.
- 56:18Vipul Bindra: But they everyone's like, oh, it's gonna be so expensive, like blah, blah blah.
- 56:23Vipul Bindra: I went there and I was like this is about the same or even slightly cheaper, because you know, orlando prices are absurd, or central florida in general.
- 56:30Vipul Bindra: So yeah, no, I don't think it's any cheaper I thought it'd be cheaper the other year.
- 56:33Quintin Sanders: It's gonna be cheaper now.
- 56:34Quintin Sanders: They lied to me so it is what it is.
- 56:38Vipul Bindra: I mean, maybe the rest of florida, I mean a lot of florida is rural or you know, not the same, like we live in a bubble.
- 56:43Vipul Bindra: I think central florida, I don't know I've been to miami and I'm like oh man, see, see, you're talking about miami.
- 56:52Quintin Sanders: That, that's another ball game but but living grew growing up.
- 56:57Quintin Sanders: Where I grew up, I don't think I'd want to live certain places, like I don't think I could survive in alabama forever.
- 57:02Quintin Sanders: I don't think I could live in rural america I have to be somewhere close to a center, and so this made sense.
- 57:10Quintin Sanders: Um, miami I heard bad things about, so I said I'm going to go in.
- 57:14Quintin Sanders: Um, and northern orland, northern florida, was like it's the same thing as alabama, yeah, so don't go there, so I'm like I'm not going there either um.
- 57:23Quintin Sanders: So I mean, at this point I'm cool with florida.
- 57:25Quintin Sanders: Will I go back to new york?
- 57:27Quintin Sanders: Probably not.
- 57:27Quintin Sanders: Um, will I move somewhere else?
- 57:29Vipul Bindra: maybe just depends, so you're not like bound basically.
- 57:32Quintin Sanders: So I mean at this point I'm cool with Florida.
- 57:34Quintin Sanders: Will I go back to New York?
- 57:35Quintin Sanders: Probably not, Will I?
- 57:35Vipul Bindra: move somewhere else?
- 57:36Vipul Bindra: Maybe Just depends.
- 57:38Vipul Bindra: So you're not like bound.
- 57:38Vipul Bindra: Basically no, until I do what you did and buy a house, yeah, I know, don't get me started on that, but that's amongst other reasons.
- 57:43Quintin Sanders: That's why I haven't really put much effort into doing that yet, because I'm like this may not be where I want to stay.
- 57:52Vipul Bindra: But I thought I mean from your meetup well, let's go there now.
- 57:55Vipul Bindra: I mean you threw in an incredible meetup, but at your meetup you also said and we'll get into the meetup in a second you said your goal was to buy a house.
- 58:04Quintin Sanders: It seems like you're interested in buying a house.
- 58:06Quintin Sanders: I am interested.
- 58:06Quintin Sanders: I am interested to buy a house.
- 58:11Quintin Sanders: It seems like you're interested in buying I, I am interested.
- 58:13Quintin Sanders: I am interested um, but I'm not 100 okay on it being here.
- 58:18Vipul Bindra: Yeah, that's the thing I'm interested and that's fine.
- 58:19Vipul Bindra: I mean, it doesn't have to be.
- 58:20Vipul Bindra: So let's, let's go on a meet up.
- 58:21Vipul Bindra: I mean, the most coolest thing you've done recently.
- 58:23Vipul Bindra: Um, so you, you called me out of nowhere, which is good, thank goodness you did, because I was.
- 58:27Vipul Bindra: I just went, so went about the house.
- 58:29Vipul Bindra: I wanted to build a space.
- 58:30Vipul Bindra: I just went awol because I was either working or literally here, sleep, barely sleep, because, uh, you know building the space, and so you know, I'm sorry about that, but I wasn't reaching out to anyone because I was just so distracted.
- 58:43Vipul Bindra: So I appreciate you reaching out.
- 58:46Vipul Bindra: But then you call me and like, hey, you had this incredible idea.
- 58:48Vipul Bindra: And as soon as you said it, I was like this is, this is amazing, because I need to get out of here and I need to go meet other fellow people.
- 58:56Vipul Bindra: Because what I love about meetups is that's where you get to have these conversations, which is where I get to learn what's happening, what I can change, what I can do better, and maybe some people can learn something from me, but also where I can find other people to hire, you know, because, as doing my own productions, I need to hire crews.
- 59:12Vipul Bindra: I would I like to meet people in person instead of, you know, online, because I don't, I can't, uh, you know, vet them that way.
- 59:19Vipul Bindra: So that sounded like an incredible you know thing, plus what I.
- 59:23Vipul Bindra: What I liked about your meetup was you didn't want to just do a networking event, you wanted to bring education into it, which was also different, but also very important, because people don't value, you know, the education aspect of it.
- 59:36Vipul Bindra: So bring me about your thought process.
- 59:39Vipul Bindra: What made you go to that and how was that whole experience?
- 59:46Quintin Sanders: First thing I was like, hey, it'd be cool If another meetup happened.
- 59:51Quintin Sanders: I haven't been to one and over a year just because I was gone a lot.
- 59:54Quintin Sanders: Um, so like there's people I haven't seen in a while.
- 59:56Quintin Sanders: Um, then on that instagram group, I see there's new people in there, there's new people clicking up and I'm just like, okay, I've been out of the loop, so need to jump back in.
- 1:00:06Quintin Sanders: So that was one thing.
- 1:00:08Quintin Sanders: The other thing was years ago someone said to me, no matter how high you get or where you go, don't forget to pull someone else up with you.
- 1:00:20Quintin Sanders: And so I've kind of operated off of that premise and always try to have someone who isn't necessarily as experienced as I am.
- 1:00:31Quintin Sanders: And you know, we're just working and they're learning from me and I'm learning from them.
- 1:00:37Quintin Sanders: I get help, they get experience, stuff like that.
- 1:00:40Quintin Sanders: Even down to the point where we were at the Kia Center last year and that girl stopped us and was like, hey, yeah, and that was so amazing.
- 1:00:48Vipul Bindra: I saw the, the other side of you, where you were like genuinely wanting to help her you know, and that's awesome, I mean, like I said, which is why, uh, bringing back to your non-profit idea, I love that because I think you are the right person to do it, because you're not gonna do it just to do it, you're gonna do it because you actually want to do it and there's, there's a there, and so, no, I totally believe in that.
- 1:01:09Vipul Bindra: Which is why I knew when you called me, that there was not that much of an ulterior motive behind it.
- 1:01:14Vipul Bindra: You genuinely wanted to catch up with people.
- 1:01:16Vipul Bindra: You wanted to meet these people.
- 1:01:18Vipul Bindra: Point is you know you're an honest guy.
- 1:01:20Vipul Bindra: So that's why I was like, look, obviously it's your meetup, but any way I can help, I'm happy to, because you know that sounds an incredible idea.
- 1:01:29Quintin Sanders: So the idea was like, hey, you know, this should be an event.
- 1:01:32Quintin Sanders: Then people I've been talking to her like, hey, you know, I wish I could learn this, or I could learn that, or I want to know this.
- 1:01:41Quintin Sanders: I want to know that questions that are coming in and people not really getting answers the way they want, or people are afraid to ask those questions in the group for whatever reason.
- 1:01:55Quintin Sanders: And I'm like what if there was a place where people could ask you face to face, get an answer that day and feel better about the decision they're trying to make?
- 1:02:03Quintin Sanders: And I'm like, okay, so we should do a meetup, there should be one.
- 1:02:07Quintin Sanders: But then I'm like, if, who's gonna do it?
- 1:02:10Quintin Sanders: I'm like, well, clearly, one hasn't been done lately.
- 1:02:15Quintin Sanders: So that's when I called you and was like, hey, let's, let's just do it.
- 1:02:18Quintin Sanders: And then I called your other people, like hey, would you help?
- 1:02:24Quintin Sanders: Like yeah, of course.
- 1:02:25Quintin Sanders: And then I called people who are less experienced, like hey, would you come?
- 1:02:30Quintin Sanders: And then I'm okay, it's going to happen.
- 1:02:35Quintin Sanders: Now it's about where, when, how.
- 1:02:38Quintin Sanders: And then that's when we got to speaking about the how.
- 1:02:41Quintin Sanders: Um, because I had the where, and then, you know, the people gave me ideas on the how and so it came together and I think it was helpful.
- 1:02:53Quintin Sanders: People said during and after it was great.
- 1:02:56Quintin Sanders: They learned some new things.
- 1:02:58Vipul Bindra: Incredible time that was.
- 1:03:00Vipul Bindra: You know, they learned some new things.
- 1:03:01Vipul Bindra: Rather, it was so crazy.
- 1:03:02Vipul Bindra: It was the longest meetup and I still felt like didn't have enough time because I didn't still get to say hi to everyone.
- 1:03:07Vipul Bindra: So that's what I'm talking about.
- 1:03:08Vipul Bindra: It's it's anyway.
- 1:03:09Vipul Bindra: It was great.
- 1:03:10Quintin Sanders: So and that's the type of meetup that I wish had already existed, because I'm like it's great when you get to meet new people, but I really don't feel like talking to a bunch of people for two, three hours, one not being able to hear them all the way because of where we are, and not really digging deep, because it seems like those networking events are surface level and you may get deep with two, three people.
- 1:03:37Quintin Sanders: Yeah, that's about it, but there's not enough time to get deeper with a lot more people.
- 1:03:43Vipul Bindra: Especially, for example, people like me, even though I'm good with this conversation because I know you, but I'm an introvert, so it's really hard for me to move from one group to the other, to the other, and that's what's kind of needed in networking event, cause you know it's weird to butt in and be like, hey, so what?
- 1:03:58Vipul Bindra: You guys talking?
- 1:03:58Vipul Bindra: About you know.
- 1:03:59Vipul Bindra: And some people are really good at it, so good for them those events.
- 1:04:02Vipul Bindra: But and for me I'm, like you know, not comfortable doing that.
- 1:04:07Vipul Bindra: So I like the setting, the way you did it.
- 1:04:09Vipul Bindra: I liked also the topic that you picked and yeah, like I said, the whole thing.
- 1:04:16Vipul Bindra: Anthony was nice to you know, order pizza and then charge everyone for it, but I mean hey.
- 1:04:22Quintin Sanders: Well, I mean, we spoke afterwards about that and I was like man, I recognize that that was a thing that could have been used, but I've never done an event or anything like that.
- 1:04:32Vipul Bindra: No, that's fine and that's okay, cause I was literally thinking when that happened.
- 1:04:35Vipul Bindra: I was like Ooh, since I was helping you anyway which again I don't want to take any credit, it was all you.
- 1:04:49Quintin Sanders: But I'm saying I wouldn't mind you know it's just pizza, um uh, but anyway that, yeah, I think that was the only thing that somebody else did, which I mean that was good too.
- 1:04:53Quintin Sanders: Yeah, so him, him bringing it up and asking me um, what do I think about?
- 1:04:55Quintin Sanders: I was like you know, it was a good idea.
- 1:04:56Quintin Sanders: And I was like thanks for pushing me to do it, because I was like, ah, it was a thought, but we had so many other things already in motion that day that I was like ah you maybe the next time.
- 1:05:09Quintin Sanders: But I mean, pulling the trigger on it was a good idea and hopefully the next one will be good too.
- 1:05:17Quintin Sanders: I have an idea.
- 1:05:18Vipul Bindra: Oh, you want to talk about it here, or no?
- 1:05:20Vipul Bindra: Yeah, sure.
- 1:05:22Quintin Sanders: This won't be out for a while anyway.
- 1:05:24Vipul Bindra: No this is live, sir, this is live.
- 1:05:26Quintin Sanders: Yeah.
- 1:05:27Vipul Bindra: Yeah, everyone's hearing what you're saying.
- 1:05:30Vipul Bindra: Oh, you're gonna talk about it.
- 1:05:31Vipul Bindra: No, it's okay, we don't know.
- 1:05:32Quintin Sanders: No, no no, okay, so it's for.
- 1:05:34Quintin Sanders: It's for people who like to shoot more than just cameras.
- 1:05:38Quintin Sanders: Okay, um, the idea is to do meet up an event or whatever that people get to shoot more than just cameras okay that makes sense.
- 1:05:50Vipul Bindra: I know this is going to be on shoot more than cameras, so what does that mean?
- 1:05:53Quintin Sanders: well, it depends on your filter for youtube here um there's no filter.
- 1:05:58Quintin Sanders: Okay, cool, um, okay, whatever so the idea is to put cameras and guns together okay, that's interesting because after that last meetup I know that there are people who like to shoot cameras and then people like who like to shoot guns.
- 1:06:14Quintin Sanders: Yeah, and so if there could be funny enough.
- 1:06:18Vipul Bindra: You say I had justin on the podcast and you know he's one of the only people I know who actually shoots for a gun company yeah, video, yeah, so that's incredible you're the second person to bring that up.
- 1:06:28Quintin Sanders: And I'm not saying necessarily shooting people shooting guns.
- 1:06:30Quintin Sanders: I'm saying doing an event where people get to put hands on to different types of cameras and equipment but also enjoy the range.
- 1:06:40Quintin Sanders: Oh, so a meetup at a range with camera nerds, that's actually very interesting Because we all like to show off our cameras, but I'm sure we're proud of our guns also do you think that would be limiting?
- 1:06:55Vipul Bindra: because again, obviously this is not the topic I talk about with you know, just anyone uh, like enough.
- 1:07:01Vipul Bindra: People are gonna have enough like into.
- 1:07:03Vipul Bindra: Are you gonna be into guns or whatever it may not be as large scale, because this one you had like what?
- 1:07:07Vipul Bindra: 20, 30 people, 30 people?
- 1:07:08Vipul Bindra: Did you do a final count?
- 1:07:09Vipul Bindra: Do you know how many people showed up?
- 1:07:10Quintin Sanders: There's about 35 altogether, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:07:12Vipul Bindra: That's a lot of people.
- 1:07:13Vipul Bindra: Do you think this next one will have that many?
- 1:07:16Quintin Sanders: The first one in my mind initially was supposed to be people that I know anyway, so just 10, 15 at the max, before the idea expanded.
- 1:07:27Quintin Sanders: And so well, this one could be 10 people, I don't care, okay, but you know, just putting the two together it seems like a fun idea.
- 1:07:35Vipul Bindra: No, that's very interesting.
- 1:07:36Vipul Bindra: I would be down for it.
- 1:07:37Vipul Bindra: How many conversations?
- 1:07:38Vipul Bindra: As long as it's outdoors, though not indoors?
- 1:07:40Quintin Sanders: How many conversations have we had about guns while we were shooting?
- 1:07:43Vipul Bindra: Yeah, but that's just because we have similar thoughts on that and we can't be the only ones, yeah.
- 1:07:49Vipul Bindra: Well, I mean, I know two people now you and Justin so we would have to, but, like I said, I would be curious about that, so that's a pretty cool idea.
- 1:07:58Quintin Sanders: And the person doesn't necessarily have to own a gun, but they could have fun going to the range every now and then.
- 1:08:04Vipul Bindra: Yeah, it's a safe environment too, so that's pretty good and so that's the idea.
- 1:08:08Quintin Sanders: When it will happen, who knows?
- 1:08:09Vipul Bindra: yeah, no, that's, that's pretty, but that's the idea in the back of my head for for one eventually, okay, but I think, um, the next big, big, big event will be the mastermind that we're, that we're putting together yes, there's got to be one again, not trying to sell, I do want to, at least I know I want to do one where you know I want to go with people who are like production company owners and just trying to, you know, pool our resources together, essentially grow together, um, and and I love these meetups, but there's a wide variety of people, so I have to, at least when I've been able to speak or learn, you know it's, it's a it's wide scale.
- 1:08:46Vipul Bindra: You're like, hey, if you want to grow to six figures or whatever, now you want to go to this, you know.
- 1:08:50Vipul Bindra: So it's like.
- 1:08:51Vipul Bindra: But I'm saying, if you did a mastermind, where it's all people like, okay, we already have the basics right, we're not struggling to pay the bills.
- 1:08:57Vipul Bindra: Now how can we make big money or how can we grow bigger from people who are already, you know, that level or higher?
- 1:09:05Vipul Bindra: I think, would be an incredible resource for everyone, because then everyone benefits from it.
- 1:09:11Vipul Bindra: I would love to put something like that together, but again, time is such crazy.
- 1:09:15Vipul Bindra: But I know you're interested in something like that too, right.
- 1:09:19Quintin Sanders: Yeah, and I realized, you know, for me I have to really dedicate the brain power to do it, and so I've already decided, like the beginning of last, the ending of 2022, when I knew what was coming for 2023, I said, okay, I'm going to dedicate to doing those things.
- 1:09:37Quintin Sanders: And so I did it.
- 1:09:39Quintin Sanders: So I think you know it should be the same thing.
- 1:09:43Vipul Bindra: Yeah, I've already you just got to do it right.
- 1:09:51Quintin Sanders: Otherwise it's never going to get done.
- 1:09:52Quintin Sanders: I've already I've already decided there was a few things I want to do this year.
- 1:09:55Quintin Sanders: I'm already doing some of them.
- 1:09:55Quintin Sanders: Um, I have some other ideas that are only business specific okay that have come to mind after the last two years of doing production that I've seen out in the world that I want to do, but those are business specific products that I want to provide Ooh, that's cool Anything you can share with us.
- 1:10:13Quintin Sanders: No.
- 1:10:13Vipul Bindra: Are they not fleshed yet?
- 1:10:15Quintin Sanders: Okay, that's okay, take your time, we'll have you back.
- 1:10:17Quintin Sanders: They're flushed, they just haven't fully been done yet.
- 1:10:20Quintin Sanders: Okay, and that is a competitive thing.
- 1:10:25Quintin Sanders: Okay.
- 1:10:25Quintin Sanders: So it's like not something that I feel like will take tons and tons of effort to do, but could provide a lot of value to the customer base and profit.
- 1:10:42Vipul Bindra: And so I'm making me and anyone listening curious.
- 1:10:44Quintin Sanders: now, well, just, based on the market that we live in.
- 1:10:47Quintin Sanders: Okay, and the service that's available for it doesn't really exist locally.
- 1:10:54Quintin Sanders: Okay, now, there are companies that are providing that service countrywide, but there isn't much locally.
- 1:11:02Vipul Bindra: Stop talking.
- 1:11:02Vipul Bindra: You're making me curious.
- 1:11:03Vipul Bindra: If you can't say it, then say it.
- 1:11:06Quintin Sanders: Yeah, so, but it doesn't the barrier to entry is not extremely high for it, yeah, and so it's still in the production space, still in the live space, and so I'm implementing it for the business I'm building.
- 1:11:17Quintin Sanders: For the live side.
- 1:11:18Quintin Sanders: I'm like, okay, this could also but service other people.
- 1:11:21Vipul Bindra: So, which is what I was going to ask you, but I guess I don't know.
- 1:11:23Vipul Bindra: If you want to tell me, then, how are you going to do outreach for that, for that ob van that you're building?
- 1:11:31Vipul Bindra: Is there, uh, like, do you have a plan in mind or is that what you're talking about?
- 1:11:33Vipul Bindra: How you're gonna do outreach?
- 1:11:35Vipul Bindra: How are you gonna get the new clients?
- 1:11:37Quintin Sanders: um, I'm for the ob event specifically.
- 1:11:41Quintin Sanders: I the plan is to one do the non side of it, which is servicing no schools and everything but that involves sports.
- 1:11:51Quintin Sanders: You don't do high school without sports and stuff like that.
- 1:11:55Quintin Sanders: So within that sports space I am thinking about expanding to doing college level sports and providing that service.
- 1:12:05Quintin Sanders: And providing that service.
- 1:12:08Quintin Sanders: So the idea is to interact with the networks that are sponsoring and giving airtime to those events, seeing what the requirements are.
- 1:12:17Quintin Sanders: I know what the requirements are for ESPN, so building the OB van in a way that is enticing to them, that's important.
- 1:12:27Vipul Bindra: Oh, so you're going for the big sports broadcast stuff not the big sports, but the medium sports.
- 1:12:33Quintin Sanders: Okay, the medium.
- 1:12:34Vipul Bindra: Okay, because I don't medium-sized colleges like you're not gonna target, like alabama or anything you're.
- 1:12:38Vipul Bindra: You're trying to go for what smaller, smaller schools that have a football or other sports program volleyball, maybe, that's a big one.
- 1:12:46Vipul Bindra: Um, that, that would be perfect, your man for right yeah, so you're thinking some yes and um.
- 1:12:55Quintin Sanders: so that's on the sports side of it and networking network broadcast side of things, making the vehicle industry standard enough so that it can be hired as any other OB vehicle that exists, because there's a certain barrier to entry when it comes to a professional standard vehicle and the things that is expected inside that vehicle.
- 1:13:19Quintin Sanders: And so I think the thing I've seen a lot is people who are coming up with custom solutions that aren't industry standard and then hiring an industry standard professional to run it, it just doesn't work, and so you end up having to operate yourselves, but you're only limited to your experience up until that point, and so it doesn't seem like there's a way to grow past it.
- 1:13:41Vipul Bindra: Yeah, no, that I completely agree with, because I've told people all the time my biggest lesson learned in video production was not buying industry-standard stuff Because you know, when you're new you go, oh well, this product exists.
- 1:13:52Vipul Bindra: For example, you know Teradek, oh, there's Teradek, but I can buy XYZ wireless system for cheaper.
- 1:13:59Vipul Bindra: And you know, guess what?
- 1:14:00Vipul Bindra: If you're just doing your own thing, it's fine.
- 1:14:03Vipul Bindra: But as soon as you start to work with crews but as soon as you start to work with crews, it becomes very difficult and it's a loss of money.
- 1:14:09Vipul Bindra: Essentially, how many equipment I've had to sell or whatever dispose of because it wouldn't fit?
- 1:14:14Vipul Bindra: Because it's one thing for you to have it, and I can assure, operate it or know it, but as soon as I bring in crew, when it's an industry standard, I can just tell anyone hey, here's a Bolt 500, whatever, go activate it and most professionals can operate it.
- 1:14:28Vipul Bindra: But when you have something specific or a custom solution that you main, they they'll be like, uh, how do I do this, how do I do that, and that's, that's a loss of efficiency and, um, you know, you can't have that on pro set.
- 1:14:40Vipul Bindra: So the lesson I learned was you know very quickly, like, just buy the right stuff the first time.
- 1:14:46Vipul Bindra: It always pays off buying cheap.
- 1:14:48Vipul Bindra: Unless it's just you one person band, then it's fine, you know, whatever, just have it, it's not going to, you know, go well.
- 1:14:56Quintin Sanders: I think there is different levels to the industry standard when it comes to broadcasting and all that stuff.
- 1:15:01Quintin Sanders: But years ago black magic couldn't be the standard, they just weren't there yet.
- 1:15:06Quintin Sanders: However, I think they are very close to being the standard for a certain level, and so the way everything operates is pretty much close to industry standard to an extent, depending on the item.
- 1:15:19Quintin Sanders: The switches, they're very close.
- 1:15:21Quintin Sanders: The cameras, on the other hand, depends on which one you're talking about aren't there yet.
- 1:15:34Quintin Sanders: The Broadcast Ursa G2s form factor pretty standard to an extent.
- 1:15:36Quintin Sanders: Their workflow to an extent.
- 1:15:36Quintin Sanders: Color-wise controlling that remotely less standard, but still doable.
- 1:15:42Vipul Bindra: Yeah, especially if you're using their switchers Right.
- 1:15:50Quintin Sanders: Less standard, as you know from your experience, but still close enough that a professional can use it, because it's all there yeah and see, this is why I stay away from.
- 1:15:56Vipul Bindra: Obviously I'm not trying to be in live as, like you are, exactly.
- 1:15:59Vipul Bindra: I don't go into those higher end events because that's not the space I'm in personally for me.
- 1:16:04Vipul Bindra: I'm in that corporate commercial space and I've live streamed tons and tons of conferences and events and Blackmagic gear has served me so well.
- 1:16:12Vipul Bindra: It paid itself long, long, you know, you know hundreds of times over.
- 1:16:16Vipul Bindra: So at that point.
- 1:16:18Vipul Bindra: So I love Blackmagic for that, but I do completely get it.
- 1:16:21Vipul Bindra: Now I wouldn't take my live streaming kit to personally to ESPN and be like, yeah, let me, let me host your boxing tournament or whatever, but you, on the other hand, obviously are building a setup that can definitely do like at least medium size events right, that's what you're getting.
- 1:16:37Quintin Sanders: So the the form factor of that camera platform is pretty similar to standard broadcast setups, you know, even down to the fiber solutions, pretty much the same, and so I think that's the closest we're going to get for the price point, and these days, not as many people are caring about the camera platform you're using, but just providing the service.
- 1:17:04Quintin Sanders: And so that's where I want to live and, like I said, a lot of that live and, like I said, a lot of that equipment is becoming standard for a lot of things like music festivals yeah and stuff like that.
- 1:17:15Quintin Sanders: There's tons of music festivals that you watch all the time that are using that camera yeah, that's true.
- 1:17:20Vipul Bindra: I've done some music festivals, so funny enough.
- 1:17:24Vipul Bindra: What is the price point they're trying to hit?
- 1:17:27Vipul Bindra: Is there a number?
- 1:17:28Vipul Bindra: I mean like, hey, this price point, this gear is good or anything beyond this.
- 1:17:34Vipul Bindra: Not so much Like what is the price point People can know if that's something they want to pursue.
- 1:17:40Vipul Bindra: How much money is there?
- 1:17:41Quintin Sanders: In terms of what I'm going after or how much I'm charging.
- 1:17:44Vipul Bindra: No, what are you going after?
- 1:17:45Vipul Bindra: Like, what will this man, or whatever the system that you'll be able to, this medium-sized live streaming setup, be able to get?
- 1:17:54Vipul Bindra: I mean, what is the price range?
- 1:17:55Vipul Bindra: I mean you can give us a range.
- 1:18:01Quintin Sanders: I think.
- 1:18:01Quintin Sanders: See, I'm not necessarily building this system to have a limit.
- 1:18:07Vipul Bindra: Oh, so there's no limit.
- 1:18:08Quintin Sanders: 'm building what's the minimum I'm building the system that is available next day okay there's.
- 1:18:17Quintin Sanders: In this world, everyone rents everything anyway.
- 1:18:22Quintin Sanders: Like I haven't done a corporate show where half the stuff isn't rented from a different company anyway.
- 1:18:27Quintin Sanders: So there's not a limit.
- 1:18:29Quintin Sanders: You can get whatever you need to get yeah, but on hand next day, two hour notice, building a very good system okay if that makes sense no, it does so.
- 1:18:43Vipul Bindra: Uh, so give us that's what I'm saying.
- 1:18:44Vipul Bindra: Um like sure, I call you.
- 1:18:46Vipul Bindra: Two hours later I have a music festival.
- 1:18:48Vipul Bindra: What is the kind of range people can expect to learn?
- 1:18:51Vipul Bindra: Because the people I'm thinking who are listening to this are either into it, maybe beginner, or they're thinking about getting into it.
- 1:18:58Vipul Bindra: I just want them to know, because I can talk all day about my level of production, but I'm not trying to do sports.
- 1:19:04Vipul Bindra: What is the money that they can make?
- 1:19:06Vipul Bindra: Is it worth?
- 1:19:06Vipul Bindra: It Is the point I'm trying to get?
- 1:19:14Quintin Sanders: what do you expect to be able to charge?
- 1:19:15Quintin Sanders: I'm expecting, like, let's say, a large size concert for music festivals specifically where I'm targeting.
- 1:19:18Quintin Sanders: I think I'm expecting to to begin on the 15 000 dollar range that's pretty good $15,000, one music festival.
- 1:19:30Quintin Sanders: Do you think?
- 1:19:31Vipul Bindra: per day or the whole festival.
- 1:19:34Quintin Sanders: I think it's the scope of work.
- 1:19:36Quintin Sanders: I think as a company I want it to be $15,000 walking away with and that's after expenses.
- 1:19:43Quintin Sanders: That's after expenses for crew.
- 1:19:46Vipul Bindra: Oh so it's going to be more.
- 1:19:47Vipul Bindra: So $15,000 is your profit.
- 1:19:49Vipul Bindra: So that crew?
- 1:19:49Vipul Bindra: Oh so it's going to be more.
- 1:19:49Vipul Bindra: So, right, so 15 is your profit.
- 1:19:50Vipul Bindra: So that means what it's going to be, what?
- 1:19:51Quintin Sanders: 30, 40 grand at least yeah, the top number right, and that's cheap.
- 1:19:55Quintin Sanders: And that's cheap.
- 1:19:55Quintin Sanders: Yeah, that's on the lower end, that's on the lower end, yeah so that's pretty good money, though somebody's thinking about it.
- 1:20:00Vipul Bindra: Um that you can, you know, do a music festival on a lower end charge.
- 1:20:04Vipul Bindra: Maybe climb 40 grand40,000, walk away with $15,000.
- 1:20:07Vipul Bindra: That's a pretty good profit range, yeah.
- 1:20:09Quintin Sanders: Yeah, and I think you know, just being around the space operating, knowing the crew sizes that I'm working with, like, hey, I show up to a gig and I'm one out of five operators for a camera, and that doesn't even take into account everyone else behind the cameras.
- 1:20:28Quintin Sanders: Knowing stage hands, you know.
- 1:20:30Quintin Sanders: Knowing and knowing what I'm charging per day for my rate and knowing everyone else is probably very similar in the ballpark.
- 1:20:38Vipul Bindra: You just do the math yeah, exactly which, and I think that exactly what.
- 1:20:43Vipul Bindra: Thank you for bringing this up?
- 1:20:45Vipul Bindra: Uh, because so many people.
- 1:20:46Vipul Bindra: Again, I'm all like don't invest in the equipment, because you know people want to start in video.
- 1:20:50Vipul Bindra: And they go what camera can I buy?
- 1:20:52Vipul Bindra: And that's what all these youtubers are peddling.
- 1:20:55Vipul Bindra: And I'm like, no, you don't need anything because, guess what, as long as you know, obviously you're skilled um, you can go be an av camera operator and usually you don't even need to bring any equipment right.
- 1:21:04Vipul Bindra: They provide everything.
- 1:21:05Vipul Bindra: You just have to go operate it.
- 1:21:07Vipul Bindra: And what kind of day rates can people expect?
- 1:21:11Quintin Sanders: um, there's been some crying and about different numbers okay, give us an average.
- 1:21:16Vipul Bindra: What's an average day rate?
- 1:21:17Vipul Bindra: Um between 450 650 that's pretty good day rate.
- 1:21:21Vipul Bindra: Look, zero investment, making 450 to 650.
- 1:21:25Vipul Bindra: I mean that's not bad, especially if you're new.
- 1:21:28Vipul Bindra: Just hang out with somebody like you, learn a little skill.
- 1:21:31Vipul Bindra: Obviously you need to know what you're doing, but once you get there, that's a pretty good day rate.
- 1:21:37Vipul Bindra: I mean zero investment, I mean can't beat it right, yeah.
- 1:21:40Vipul Bindra: And usually it's not one day, usually.
- 1:21:42Vipul Bindra: What?
- 1:21:42Vipul Bindra: How many days is average?
- 1:21:44Vipul Bindra: Usually it's three, five days give or take three to five days you're walking with a few thousand dollars and most of it is profit now minus.
- 1:21:55Vipul Bindra: Obviously you know taxes and everything, but not bad most of it's in your pocket exactly.
- 1:22:00Speaker 3: There's no expenses like I gas, but gas and, like any job, what I'm saying is there's none.
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: You had to invest right off this equipment and you know, like any job.
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying is like there's none.
- 1:22:07Vipul Bindra: You had to invest this right off, this equipment, this camera, this sd card now there's battery.
- 1:22:12Quintin Sanders: There are people who have their preferences on what they certain things like chairs for instance.
- 1:22:17Quintin Sanders: I have my preference on the chair, so I have my own chair okay, well, that's your choice, right?
- 1:22:22Quintin Sanders: Yeah, otherwise they'll provide you a chair, okay you know, like just bringing, there are certain things that you could have yourself.
- 1:22:28Vipul Bindra: Which I know you have pulled it on my set, so I know you that stool.
- 1:22:31Vipul Bindra: Is that what you're talking about?
- 1:22:32Quintin Sanders: No, no, no, no, no, that's the stool.
- 1:22:34Quintin Sanders: Okay, so it's different.
- 1:22:36Vipul Bindra: Oh, I haven't seen the chair.
- 1:22:37Quintin Sanders: That's the stool.
- 1:22:41Vipul Bindra: I have a chair when I'm directing, okay, or is this different?
- 1:22:44Quintin Sanders: No, no, no, the cam op chair is close to a director's chair.
- 1:22:48Quintin Sanders: The video directing chair for live events is a Herman Miller.
- 1:22:56Vipul Bindra: Oh yeah, but it makes sense.
- 1:22:57Quintin Sanders: Yeah, long days and so like, but that's a personal investment.
- 1:23:00Vipul Bindra: You wanted to make Personal investment the main thing I want to know is like tell people is like come on, I'm tired of people being broke in this industry.
- 1:23:07Vipul Bindra: There's so much money to be made and there's so many different avenues to make money, man.
- 1:23:10Vipul Bindra: We've already talked about three, four different ways, but I what I love about av is like it's zero investment route.
- 1:23:17Vipul Bindra: As long as you get skilled and you network, you don't require any investment outside of what you may want to do anyway, like for your own now there is there's there is a level of investment when it comes to education, because different training and certifications require money.
- 1:23:29Vipul Bindra: Exactly, yeah, nothing replaces education.
- 1:23:31Quintin Sanders: The only person paying for that is you.
- 1:23:33Quintin Sanders: So there's certain things you need to pay for, like, for example, you don't need to have your own headset, but I try to tell people there are things you don't need, and there are things you do need.
- 1:23:47Vipul Bindra: Okay, so what do they need?
- 1:23:49Quintin Sanders: So, like, let's say, camera Operator decides when we jump into that, having your own headset is really nice to have, okay, because you will be able to hear more clearly.
- 1:24:03Vipul Bindra: Yeah, that's what they give you is good.
- 1:24:05Vipul Bindra: It's still fine, the typical.
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: Motorola stuff that you, stuff that you put on your ear.
- 1:24:09Quintin Sanders: No, no, broadcast headsets you know that plug into the cameras.
- 1:24:12Quintin Sanders: The ones they give you are fine, but sometimes the pressure could be a lot or sometimes the cable may be going bad Sure.
- 1:24:19Vipul Bindra: It's not just your big head Sometimes maybe but sometimes the I'm joking.
- 1:24:33Quintin Sanders: The headsets could be either really strong on your ears or the cable could be going bad or whatever.
- 1:24:35Quintin Sanders: And having your own, never excuse why you can't hear.
- 1:24:37Quintin Sanders: You don't want to be the guy who has to come up with excuses.
- 1:24:43Vipul Bindra: Yeah, please don't make excuses.
- 1:24:44Vipul Bindra: Like you said, if you don't like it, definitely I go by your headset, obviously, if somebody is being unreasonable's different than yes please speak up, but otherwise you know you don't want to be the guy coming up with excuses.
- 1:24:54Vipul Bindra: It's very easy to again get blacklisted, not get hired again, right?
- 1:24:59Quintin Sanders: yes, and people who do that, who are in that space.
- 1:25:02Quintin Sanders: They are already bringing tons of stuff that they're not charging for but just elevates the service that they can provide.
- 1:25:10Quintin Sanders: The better service you provide, the more chances they'll call you back, show after show after show.
- 1:25:16Vipul Bindra: Exactly See.
- 1:25:17Vipul Bindra: It's the people, it's the relationship it comes down to all of this bad, but investment is not necessary.
- 1:25:22Vipul Bindra: That's my main point.
- 1:25:23Quintin Sanders: It's not.
- 1:25:24Vipul Bindra: Yeah, you can be in this industry.
- 1:25:26Vipul Bindra: You can make money.
- 1:25:27Vipul Bindra: You can make good money.
- 1:25:28Vipul Bindra: Um, it's just all about relationships and again, if you want to meet someone who's doing what you want to do, just reach out.
- 1:25:36Vipul Bindra: I'm sure you have a quentin in your town or whatever.
- 1:25:39Vipul Bindra: Or at least if you're in the central florida area, I would say and tell me if I'm wrong if somebody just sent you an email or said hey, quentin, I love what you're doing.
- 1:25:47Vipul Bindra: I I would love to learn more.
- 1:25:48Vipul Bindra: Can I please grab a cup of coffee?
- 1:25:49Vipul Bindra: Would you say no, no, no, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:25:52Vipul Bindra: You're going to make yourself accessible, just like I would.
- 1:25:55Vipul Bindra: I find anyone in this field who's successful is generally open to helping anyone.
- 1:26:01Vipul Bindra: You know who wants, you know who wants to learn.
- 1:26:04Vipul Bindra: As long as you know you're not pestering, you're just being genuine about it, I'm sure you'd be happy to take an hour out of your time and have a coffee.
- 1:26:14Vipul Bindra: Be nice, buy Quentin coffee.
- 1:26:15Vipul Bindra: Obviously, don't let Quentin pay for it when you want to meet him, but you know what?
- 1:26:19Vipul Bindra: I mean, I get the idea.
- 1:26:20Vipul Bindra: This doesn't have to be you.
- 1:26:21Vipul Bindra: There's people out there who are willing to share and help people get into it and make a living out of it there's.
- 1:26:33Quintin Sanders: I think years ago there was a.
- 1:26:36Quintin Sanders: I had to do this the hard way due to I'm not going to really tell you I think that whole mindset gone, even when it comes down to traditional film.
- 1:26:48Quintin Sanders: I don't think it's that way anymore from people I've spoken to who operate in both spaces yeah, I mean, there's still politics in hollywood, but let's not get there.
- 1:26:56Quintin Sanders: That's why I'm talking about on a, on a, just a day-to-day person to person.
- 1:27:00Quintin Sanders: One man on a crew.
- 1:27:03Quintin Sanders: I'm saying people aren't like gatekeeping as yeah, they used to, and in the av space people aren't gatekeeping how they used to and the live event space people aren't gatekeeping like they used to, at least on the lower ends, where you're just a guy who wants to get on.
- 1:27:20Quintin Sanders: Yeah.
- 1:27:20Quintin Sanders: And you're the guy in someone's mind when they need an extra person.
- 1:27:24Vipul Bindra: Yeah, that's the person to call and here's the thing If you find somebody you know who is that type, then hang up the phone, go find somebody else.
- 1:27:31Vipul Bindra: There's always going to be somebody nice who's willing to, like you said, who's not gatekeeping, who's willing to share, because at the end of the day, you know you're not asking for something unreasonable.
- 1:27:40Vipul Bindra: You're not just saying, hey, take me on a set, take me on a set.
- 1:27:43Vipul Bindra: You know.
- 1:27:43Vipul Bindra: All you're saying is, hey, teach me or tell me how to do this.
- 1:27:46Vipul Bindra: Obviously, the effort lies on the person.
- 1:27:56Vipul Bindra: They have to still go learn and whatever, or you know, move their way up.
- 1:27:58Vipul Bindra: But what I'm trying to say is uh, I'm pretty sure you and other people like you would be happy to, uh, you know, share your knowledge at least.
- 1:28:01Vipul Bindra: Uh and um, you know, not gatekeep and be like no, no, no, I'm not telling you.
- 1:28:06Vipul Bindra: I don't think that exists, and if it does exist, it's a nowadays.
- 1:28:09Vipul Bindra: At least there's a limited amount of people, and those people are out of the way anyway because it's you know they're dinosaurs.
- 1:28:15Vipul Bindra: That's not how it works now.
- 1:28:17Quintin Sanders: You said taking on set.
- 1:28:18Quintin Sanders: Now I think what some people don't understand is there's practical and there's impractical.
- 1:28:23Quintin Sanders: It's impractical for me to take you with me to certain things, because I'm just another guy doing a thing.
- 1:28:33Vipul Bindra: No, that's why I said you won't take them to set, but you'll be happy to share that.
- 1:28:37Vipul Bindra: Because, yeah, I don't, I don't do the same thing.
- 1:28:39Vipul Bindra: I'm not just meeting you and be like, oh sure, come to my set.
- 1:28:41Vipul Bindra: Now it's different.
- 1:28:42Vipul Bindra: If I'm, at least for me, I've built a relationship.
- 1:28:45Vipul Bindra: I'm happy to bring it and also for me, referrals, for example.
- 1:28:49Vipul Bindra: Um, uh, the way we got together is because I called alex you know a friend of mine and and you're obviously great friends with him and I was like, hey, I want you to come help out.
- 1:28:59Vipul Bindra: I need one more person you know who could come do sound.
- 1:29:01Vipul Bindra: And he was like, oh, I know my buddy quentin.
- 1:29:03Vipul Bindra: He's great and and you know, normally if somebody just told me anyone I wouldn't just hire them, but I trusted alex opinion and as soon as he was like I trust him there you go that's it sometimes, that how you can, you can be on set.
- 1:29:15Vipul Bindra: And now obviously we've been friends for a year and I've hired independently of Alex many times.
- 1:29:20Vipul Bindra: So just in general we talk.
- 1:29:21Vipul Bindra: So what I'm saying is that that goes a long way and if you've met someone enough times that you trust them and you can vet their skill, I'm sure if you were on a show and they're like, hey, I mean some operator called in or whatever, like we need an operator, you'd be happy to suggest the name of someone you trust, right.
- 1:29:41Quintin Sanders: Yeah, and a couple of quick examples of that.
- 1:29:44Quintin Sanders: So Alex was on the show, wherever it was don't remember the hotel, but he was, you know, he was switching the show and they were like, hey, our, you know he was switching the show and they were like, hey, our camera operator didn't show up.
- 1:29:58Quintin Sanders: We need a camera operator.
- 1:29:59Quintin Sanders: He calls me, puts me on the phone with the guy in charge and I'll be honest, there are certain times of the year where you're busy enough where it's like I don't even want to do this.
- 1:30:08Quintin Sanders: Yeah, that was one of those times.
- 1:30:10Quintin Sanders: I I had a hammer drill in my hand mounting a TV.
- 1:30:15Quintin Sanders: I did not want to go and I had just got back and I did not want to go and operate a camera for the next three days.
- 1:30:25Quintin Sanders: But I was like money talks, finished what I was doing and went and, you know, did the thing.
- 1:30:35Quintin Sanders: But that's just an example of you know.
- 1:30:37Quintin Sanders: It's also about who you know did the thing.
- 1:30:38Vipul Bindra: But that's just an example of you know.
- 1:30:39Vipul Bindra: It's also about who you know.
- 1:30:40Vipul Bindra: Simple, like if alex knew you and obviously you guys are friends so he would call you.
- 1:30:44Vipul Bindra: But that's what I'm saying you.
- 1:30:45Vipul Bindra: It's also who you know, and the only way you'll get to know people is by getting out of your home and going out and networking.
- 1:30:52Quintin Sanders: But also being good enough to do the job.
- 1:30:57Vipul Bindra: Yeah, skills is first.
- 1:30:59Quintin Sanders: Because, you know, like the first initial way we met, I was brought in to do sound.
- 1:31:05Quintin Sanders: I wouldn't consider myself a sound person.
- 1:31:10Quintin Sanders: However, I was passionate enough, understood what needed to be done and did it.
- 1:31:19Vipul Bindra: Yeah, you did a great job.
- 1:31:21Quintin Sanders: But for some people, you know, if you're not confident enough to say yes to that job.
- 1:31:27Quintin Sanders: Yet me personally, I don't think you should say yes to it.
- 1:31:31Vipul Bindra: No, I completely agree.
- 1:31:32Vipul Bindra: Please don't say yes, because had that sound not been good, I would have been really, really really not, not happy and we would have not had years you.
- 1:31:40Vipul Bindra: You wouldn't have been happy with me and you wouldn't have been happy with alex yes, exactly, and it would have ruined my relationship that I had with alex at the time.
- 1:31:47Vipul Bindra: Right, because the only reason at that time because, like I said, I didn't know you personally, then you were there was because alex said to you and but that's what I'm saying, if somebody asked me to bring somebody on set, if I'm recommending them, I'm putting my name on the line.
- 1:32:01Vipul Bindra: So same thing.
- 1:32:02Vipul Bindra: Like you said, you couldn't have said it better.
- 1:32:04Vipul Bindra: Only say yes if you're confident, because, believe me, you're not blacklisted for saying no.
- 1:32:08Vipul Bindra: If you just say hey, yeah, I don't think I'm confident as a sound guy, but I'm happy to do be a cam op or whatever, whatever the the point is, you will not be blacklisted.
- 1:32:24Vipul Bindra: But or forget blacklist just in general, you're not souring the relationship.
- 1:32:25Vipul Bindra: But if you do, um screw up, not only are you ruining the shoot, you're also making sure that uh, you know you're not getting hired again.
- 1:32:29Vipul Bindra: Plus, now you're ruining my friendship with someone else.
- 1:32:31Vipul Bindra: Obviously you didn't do that.
- 1:32:32Vipul Bindra: You did great.
- 1:32:32Vipul Bindra: Everything is fantastic.
- 1:32:33Vipul Bindra: I brought you back as a sound guy again because you know that is on me also.
- 1:32:35Vipul Bindra: Don did great.
- 1:32:35Vipul Bindra: Everything is fantastic.
- 1:32:35Vipul Bindra: I brought you back as a sound guy again because you know that is on me also.
- 1:32:38Vipul Bindra: Don't pigeonhole people because I met you as a sound guy.
- 1:32:41Vipul Bindra: So I'm like, oh, he's a sound guy.
- 1:32:43Vipul Bindra: And then I brought you another thing on another gig and then we got to talking and you're like I'm not just a sound guy, I'm like crap, I gotta stop, you know.
- 1:32:50Vipul Bindra: And then obviously now I know you're navy, you know your video and everything.
- 1:32:53Vipul Bindra: So now I've obviously brought you um, we've worked as a you know, a camera guy too, but same thing, you know, don't pigeonhole, pigeonhole people, and but also don't say yes if you're not confident.
- 1:33:05Vipul Bindra: Uh, but if you are obviously, getting to network and meet people is great because that's how, like that, I met you and I wouldn't have met you, uh, if it wasn't for that whole thing and uh, which I'm excited to have, alex I'm gonna have him in a few weeks, so I'm excited to have him.
- 1:33:20Vipul Bindra: Um, you know, on the podcast too, uh, but yeah, no, that, like I said, get out, you know not, that's not for you.
- 1:33:29Vipul Bindra: I'm just saying anyone listening who's not again, maybe at uh, making money from this or making enough money from this?
- 1:33:36Quintin Sanders: I think just go out and just say hi, just meet people for coffee, and I'm sure a lot of people are more than happy to I think, it accommodate you if you're reasonable if we're talking starting out like I've, I've done video work part-time at the beginning and so I can remember driving the truck.
- 1:33:59Quintin Sanders: I was driving for the company I was working for driving through Manhattan or driving through New York in general.
- 1:34:07Quintin Sanders: Like you have this idea of where you want to be and however, however amount of time that you have five, 10 years, whatever but I remember like man, if only, if only, if only because you're driving past productions that are shooting.
- 1:34:21Quintin Sanders: You're driving past even production-related vehicles.
- 1:34:25Quintin Sanders: Yeah, that's a lot in New York.
- 1:34:27Quintin Sanders: You're driving past trailers, you're driving past production trucks, you're driving past a set, you're driving past picture vehicles actually being filmed on, and it's just like, if only um and I think at that point, even watching youtube at the same time, while driving.
- 1:34:47Quintin Sanders: Watching youtube, whatever, um, oh my goodness, don't do that but, but even like just driving and watching people and driving past the things happening at the same time, it was just like crap, I wish, I wish, I wish.
- 1:35:00Quintin Sanders: And it was only because of the constant going for it that you get there.
- 1:35:06Vipul Bindra: Yeah, no, no, I'm with you, not to sound preachy, but exactly, you know, for years I was like, oh, I'd rather be doing video, I'd rather be doing video, but you, know, it's, this is just passion, right, this is not.
- 1:35:16Vipul Bindra: You know, this is in full time, whatever.
- 1:35:18Vipul Bindra: You know just like that, especially um, being indian.
- 1:35:21Vipul Bindra: You know, doctor, engineer, you're just a failure.
- 1:35:24Vipul Bindra: This is how you, at least I was raised up.
- 1:35:26Vipul Bindra: So I'm just like um, but I don't want to do that.
- 1:35:28Vipul Bindra: You know, this is what I want to do and um, anyway, the taking that leap of faith was the hardest thing, but, like you said, actually doing it is is so incredible, um, I think the the best thing you can do is actually just do it, you know not to be confused with quitting tomorrow and going for it.
- 1:35:50Quintin Sanders: I mean why, not because people got bills to pay.
- 1:35:53Vipul Bindra: Okay, yeah obviously don't do that if you got.
- 1:35:56Quintin Sanders: But I mean I mean develop developing a plan to make it happen and making it happen in a certain reasonable amount of time, and not saying I'm going to make it happen for the next 10 years and don't make it happen no, absolutely.
- 1:36:07Vipul Bindra: I know very, very well, said quentin yeah, I don't.
- 1:36:10Vipul Bindra: I don't want anyone to not be able to pay their bills, not just listen to this and go like, oh, these people are making six figures, seven figures.
- 1:36:16Vipul Bindra: Whatever they're making, I want to do that too, so I quit my job.
- 1:36:19Vipul Bindra: Um, you, you want to be able to obviously pay bills.
- 1:36:22Vipul Bindra: This works great if you're, you know, already student, living their parents or whatever, um, then you know you can.
- 1:36:27Vipul Bindra: You can do that.
- 1:36:28Vipul Bindra: But if you're not, then same thing I was saying earlier then go meet the people who are in the industry.
- 1:36:33Vipul Bindra: Obviously get to a stage where it automatically becomes independent, because you know, once you've been on enough gigs and you're already pulling in enough revenue that you can pay your bills, it'll be a lot easier to obviously quit your full-time job.
- 1:36:47Quintin Sanders: No, thank you for saying that.
- 1:36:48Quintin Sanders: I don't mean that I've stopped looking at how other people are running their race because no one else is in my specific position, you know.
- 1:37:00Quintin Sanders: So I don't.
- 1:37:01Quintin Sanders: I try not to be envious of other people and go I wish, I wish, I wish anymore, because I recognize I'm running my race.
- 1:37:09Quintin Sanders: Yeah, and the only person running that race is me.
- 1:37:13Vipul Bindra: So you know and the good thing is there's enough work.
- 1:37:16Vipul Bindra: Yeah, please, uh like again, my thing is I don't want to be envious of anyone, uh, because, um, like you said, uh a, I think it just makes you happier, and then b, there is so much work, man, everyone needs video every.
- 1:37:31Vipul Bindra: Uh, there's so much work, so why be envious?
- 1:37:34Vipul Bindra: Rather learn.
- 1:37:35Vipul Bindra: Learn If somebody's doing great if I see something that somebody's doing and I like it, instead of me going, oh, I wish I was doing that.
- 1:37:41Vipul Bindra: I was like, hey, how did you get it?
- 1:37:42Vipul Bindra: Like, exactly.
- 1:37:43Vipul Bindra: I'm like how'd you get it?
- 1:37:44Vipul Bindra: That was awesome.
- 1:37:45Vipul Bindra: You know what was the connect?
- 1:37:46Vipul Bindra: How'd you get it?
- 1:37:47Vipul Bindra: You know blah, blah, blah, blah, sulking, you know.
- 1:37:52Vipul Bindra: I think that social media has done that.
- 1:37:54Vipul Bindra: I'm very techie, like I said, I'm very forward um of social media since the beginning, but at the same time, I do see the drawback, where what happens is everyone shares five, ten minutes of their best life on it and then, when you're scrolling past 10 minutes everyone's best life you start to think that's all their life is.
- 1:38:12Vipul Bindra: Everyone has problems in their life.
- 1:38:14Vipul Bindra: Everyone has.
- 1:38:15Vipul Bindra: You know that 10 minutes wasn't their whole day is what I'm saying.
- 1:38:19Vipul Bindra: So you can use it two ways, right?
- 1:38:21Vipul Bindra: You can either scroll through and be like this is what I want to do, I'm.
- 1:38:24Vipul Bindra: It motivates you, right.
- 1:38:25Vipul Bindra: You get out of the bed.
- 1:38:26Vipul Bindra: You're like, okay, this is the set I want to be on, this is the shoot I want to be on.
- 1:38:29Vipul Bindra: That's one way to look at it and social media is awesome.
- 1:38:32Vipul Bindra: The other side is, for some people.
- 1:38:34Vipul Bindra: It's like they scroll and they look at it like, oh, that person's not even good enough, or why do they have that set, and then you're just negative and not doing anything about it.
- 1:38:43Vipul Bindra: Uh, I think it can be harmful.
- 1:38:45Vipul Bindra: So I think it's just you have to choose how it is, and hopefully it's the number one way, and if it's not it, then I think you should just quit social media for a while and actually go work on, like you said, just being happy and just working on your skills there's.
- 1:39:00Quintin Sanders: There's a certain level of like going back to just scrolling and saying, hey, that person's work isn't as good anyway.
- 1:39:08Quintin Sanders: How are they doing?
- 1:39:09Quintin Sanders: And I'm not.
- 1:39:10Quintin Sanders: I'm like it's full of this world, is full of people like that that just happen to be in the right place at the right time, or just a little bit of luck, or they knew that one person yeah, or to give another side.
- 1:39:24Vipul Bindra: I mean what you're saying is correct.
- 1:39:25Vipul Bindra: Yes, there's a lot of people again who you know matters, right, like Alex gave you a call.
- 1:39:29Vipul Bindra: There's a lot of that happening, as in they will call the person they know.
- 1:39:33Vipul Bindra: I'm saying that you sitting at home, that they don't know, uh, the the other thing is you don't know what the circumstances they were in, because a lot of my shoots sometimes and you've been on enough corporate shoots with me where it's like no, you've 10 minutes to set up, or you know hey, or like the key isn't to travel, they're like run, you know, like we want you here and you know the center is so big you can't be there.
- 1:39:54Vipul Bindra: And then they're, you know, they're like, oh, the camera guy didn't make it.
- 1:39:57Vipul Bindra: It's what I'm trying to say is like you don't know the circumstance also of what was happening in that moment.
- 1:40:04Vipul Bindra: Maybe they only had five minutes yes, maybe they are really good and what you're seeing is what they can do in five minutes and not five hours.
- 1:40:11Vipul Bindra: Right, and you at home and you're practicing your lighting or whatever and you're like look mine's better.
- 1:40:17Vipul Bindra: Well, maybe you had, I don't know, I'm not saying maybe they are bad but what I'm saying is you also don't know what was the situation, so stop being judgy of other people and I don't know.
- 1:40:26Vipul Bindra: At least for me, it made me happier where I don't try to do social media that much and when I do do it I am more oh, I want to do that, more of that.
- 1:40:37Vipul Bindra: So I'm like looking at it like hey, let me connect with this person or let me ask them in a positive way because I want to do that and there's enough work out for out there for me to do that, and I just need to know how they did it.
- 1:40:49Vipul Bindra: Like I would love to learn as more of an education thing than more of an emotional thing there are three.
- 1:40:55Quintin Sanders: Well, there are about four instagram pages, um, of people who are doing exactly where I want to be and I am.
- 1:41:05Quintin Sanders: I'm all over anytime they post um.
- 1:41:08Quintin Sanders: Anytime there's a story, I'm watching it and I'm just looking for details, looking for is there something there that they're doing in their process, like they're taking a picture of their their engineering rack, for example, like in their vehicle?
- 1:41:27Quintin Sanders: What is that?
- 1:41:29Quintin Sanders: How are they using it?
- 1:41:31Vipul Bindra: why do they have it?
- 1:41:32Vipul Bindra: Yeah, why do they have it?
- 1:41:33Quintin Sanders: what show are they doing?
- 1:41:34Quintin Sanders: Um, so there's a couple of guys like that who have big companies in different countries.
- 1:41:38Quintin Sanders: I recognize they're in other countries, like Brazil and Mexico and a place in Europe, but there are a few different companies that are doing that stuff and I'm all over their Instagrams.
- 1:41:50Quintin Sanders: I'm like, okay, what are you using?
- 1:41:52Quintin Sanders: You're using the same stuff I'm using.
- 1:41:53Quintin Sanders: Okay, how are you using it differently?
- 1:41:55Quintin Sanders: So there's a couple channels like that.
- 1:41:57Quintin Sanders: There's a couple guys that I followed.
- 1:42:00Quintin Sanders: I'm like, okay, I want to be doing this also, just in a different way.
- 1:42:04Quintin Sanders: How are they doing?
- 1:42:05Quintin Sanders: So that's how I use social media.
- 1:42:07Vipul Bindra: That's very good.
- 1:42:08Vipul Bindra: You know, I did the same thing when I was building my, you know, grip and production man, I was all over the youtube.
- 1:42:13Vipul Bindra: There's a youtube not youtube facebook group and all other places.
- 1:42:16Vipul Bindra: And you know, like, like you said, you're zooming in, you're like why do they have it?
- 1:42:20Vipul Bindra: Why is it?
- 1:42:21Vipul Bindra: You know what's the use case for it?
- 1:42:23Vipul Bindra: Um, and you know, making you know that that's good, that's, that's the best way of using.
- 1:42:28Vipul Bindra: You know, I think social media is, and I'm pretty sure those people you know most likely don't have any issue with it, because that's how we grow.
- 1:42:34Vipul Bindra: You know, we learn from each other and find efficiencies and and ways to uh, make our work better.
- 1:42:41Vipul Bindra: Right at the end, they, you, you're building these racks or whatever to to make your job easier.
- 1:42:46Vipul Bindra: You don't have the stuff just to have it right.
- 1:42:48Vipul Bindra: Um, and if somebody else can help you get there or make you do, at least get there better and faster, why wouldn't you?
- 1:42:55Vipul Bindra: And you know again, and I'm pretty sure most people are happy to again, like, share that education.
- 1:43:00Vipul Bindra: But social media is so amazing.
- 1:43:02Vipul Bindra: You can get a lot of times for free and you can get it quickly.
- 1:43:05Vipul Bindra: Because you know, I love youtube, um, because sometimes I have this oddly specific question.
- 1:43:12Vipul Bindra: But you know, in a normal world you'd be like I'm the only one having this problem.
- 1:43:16Vipul Bindra: But you never know, and there's usually some some video with not that many views.
- 1:43:21Vipul Bindra: If somebody had that issue and they've resolved it and that can save you hours of time because I can just put the solution in, move on, and so youtube is great for that.
- 1:43:30Vipul Bindra: But obviously there's a negative side to it.
- 1:43:31Vipul Bindra: There's so much noise.
- 1:43:32Vipul Bindra: If you just type a broad question, there's hundreds of videos coming up and a lot of people are not even experts, they're just making the videos so they can make a living off youtube.
- 1:43:41Vipul Bindra: That you have to be very careful of, because then now that education isn't actually valid because those people businesses and what they're talking about is to actually be on youtube.
- 1:43:51Vipul Bindra: So there's a balance to it, I think and again it comes under the personal approach right, you have to use social media however it works best for you.
- 1:43:59Vipul Bindra: At the end of the day, I just want more people in the industry.
- 1:44:02Vipul Bindra: I want more people to make a healthy living from it and find success, because I think it's very easy.
- 1:44:08Vipul Bindra: You just have to do it the right way and you have to do it positively.
- 1:44:11Vipul Bindra: Then you know, buy a bunch of these courses and somehow go.
- 1:44:16Vipul Bindra: Why isn't it working for me?
- 1:44:21Quintin Sanders: I know a few different people who have bought courses and, like man, I'm just still not understanding all of it and I'm like I'm not saying all courses are bad.
- 1:44:31Vipul Bindra: Obviously, education, like you said yourself, education is some of the best thing you know, for the best thing you know for the world, for for you, for your personal growth.
- 1:44:39Vipul Bindra: But I'm saying there's so much noise, right, some of these courses are just there to make money, like the person who's selling you the course, their entire business model is to sell you.
- 1:44:49Vipul Bindra: It's funny you say that, because you know it's one thing that an industry expert goes hey, um, I'm the best plumber ever, I want to teach you how to be a plumber.
- 1:44:59Vipul Bindra: But then when I'm done with this course sure, it's a side business, which is okay for people to make money I'm back to being a plumber, building new chains of plumbing or whatever.
- 1:45:08Vipul Bindra: That's great.
- 1:45:09Vipul Bindra: Learn from that guy, because he's in the trenches building a plumbing business.
- 1:45:14Vipul Bindra: But now here comes the guy.
- 1:45:15Vipul Bindra: He's like hey, you know a plumbing business.
- 1:45:17Vipul Bindra: But now here comes the guy.
- 1:45:17Vipul Bindra: He's like hey, I'm a plumbing expert and you learned?
- 1:45:18Vipul Bindra: They just did it for six months and they quit.
- 1:45:20Vipul Bindra: Now they're an influencer in plumbing, but they actually don't know anything.
- 1:45:23Vipul Bindra: They don't know how to business scales, uh, what the real problems are when you're at that scale or whatever I'm just saying and then you're going to follow that.
- 1:45:30Vipul Bindra: Usually you won't find success, because what they're talking about is not relevant to the real problems you have in the field, and I think that's a lot with video.
- 1:45:38Vipul Bindra: It's especially sprouted, I think, the last few years because the industry sprouted.
- 1:45:46Quintin Sanders: So many new courses popped up and that's terrible.
- 1:45:48Quintin Sanders: You know, I was watching someone's podcast the other day and he's a video professional and he's a video professional.
- 1:45:55Quintin Sanders: I try not to classify people as DP, cinematographer, whatever, because those things don't seem to be as separate anymore.
- 1:46:07Quintin Sanders: Everyone's bringing them all together.
- 1:46:09Quintin Sanders: So I just call people video business professionals or video professionals.
- 1:46:15Quintin Sanders: Okay, because at this point we're operating in the space that we're supposed to be professional and we do video.
- 1:46:24Quintin Sanders: Video is a vast term, but because I'm in so many different spaces and I know so many different people, I kind of just say he's a video professional.
- 1:46:34Quintin Sanders: When people ask me, what do I do, I'm just like I'm a video professional at this point.
- 1:46:38Quintin Sanders: Because me sitting here saying, hey, I'm a video director, yes, I am, and I do that, but I I try to do so many other things also because of so many different interests.
- 1:46:49Quintin Sanders: Yeah, so the right thing.
- 1:46:51Quintin Sanders: You know, an event with a couple hundred thousand people in nigeria one week and then designing a system for someone else the next week it's so funny you just glossed over hundreds of thousands of people yeah, it's crazy that's a big, that's a large event
- 1:47:09Quintin Sanders: yes, but I I try to tell people, don't think about that, because the job itself is the same.
- 1:47:18Quintin Sanders: Just how you're doing it may scale.
- 1:47:21Quintin Sanders: Learning the fundamentals of one thing will always work.
- 1:47:28Quintin Sanders: Just you may have to do it at a larger scale, and the only analogy I can ever think of for that is like an audio console, like you have the channel strip.
- 1:47:38Quintin Sanders: It's like once you learn how to use the effects and the EQ of that one channel, you know how to use the entire board.
- 1:47:46Quintin Sanders: For me it's the same thing with all the video.
- 1:47:48Quintin Sanders: Once you learn the specifics of this, one thing, it's just about scaling it.
- 1:47:53Quintin Sanders: And so, yeah, it's that event, whatever you know.
- 1:47:56Quintin Sanders: One thing, it's just about scaling it, yeah, and so, yes, that event, whatever you know, but you know doing that one week and then designing a system for someone else the next week.
- 1:48:02Vipul Bindra: That's very good said, but you know, you know and I'm the, I'm the guy it's like but also the challenges, though on a 300 to 400 000 a person event would be far greater than yes a small, you shoot yes, you know and most you're like you've little equipment.
- 1:48:18Vipul Bindra: Then you know, oh, maybe the hdmi broke or whatever I don't know.
- 1:48:20Vipul Bindra: But that's a small, you know issue.
- 1:48:22Vipul Bindra: Versus that, the issues they probably encounter are on a bigger scale and the only way you can learn those is by being on shoots that size right yes, I think, yes, yes to that, but still don't let that take you out of reality and just focusing on your thing, get your fundamentals right, because that environment.
- 1:48:48Quintin Sanders: Your job is only your job, anyway.
- 1:48:50Quintin Sanders: Yeah true, so trying to think too large into other people's roles isn't going to help anything anyway, unless you have a perspective to help to show.
- 1:49:00Vipul Bindra: Or you're trying to be the guy who's in charge.
- 1:49:02Vipul Bindra: Yes, so it depends on the role you're trying to get into, but absolutely no.
- 1:49:06Vipul Bindra: You hit the nail on the head there like that.
- 1:49:09Vipul Bindra: Get your fundamentals right.
- 1:49:11Vipul Bindra: You'd be amazed how many people I meet again who are like you don't know a lack of video production and they want to run a video production company.
- 1:49:20Vipul Bindra: It's possible as long as you hire professionals and you're a good sales guy.
- 1:49:23Vipul Bindra: But if you're trying to also do the creative part of it and it's not working out, it may just be because you didn't try to get your fundamentals right and it's not hard Again.
- 1:49:34Vipul Bindra: Just be on set Again.
- 1:49:38Vipul Bindra: All I can tell people is like um, you know, nowadays it's you don't need school or anything, you just need to be on set.
- 1:49:44Vipul Bindra: You just need to be on the set with people who know what they're doing and they'll happily bring you, you know, as a pa or whatever, as long as you build that relationship first.
- 1:49:52Vipul Bindra: And you know, because most, like you said, people aren't gatekeeping anymore.
- 1:49:56Vipul Bindra: People are happy to share.
- 1:49:57Vipul Bindra: Plus, what I love is most people doing this are passionate about it.
- 1:50:01Vipul Bindra: Very few people are in this just for the money.
- 1:50:03Vipul Bindra: Obviously people want money, but most people are passionate about whatever, like you are going to live, because you're passionate about it.
- 1:50:09Vipul Bindra: Right, I do corporate and and you know, commercial video because I love it and I'm passionate about it and those people generally will happily talk about it because that's what they love, yeah, exactly.
- 1:50:20Vipul Bindra: Because that's what we want to do, so why wouldn't we want to share it with anyone?
- 1:50:24Vipul Bindra: So there's no gatekeeping going on here.
- 1:50:26Vipul Bindra: Rather, you know, you're fulfilling that internal thing to talk about what you love, and a lot of our spouses are just like please stop talking about it Anyway.
- 1:50:34Vipul Bindra: So it's, they're just like please stop talking about it anyway.
- 1:50:37Vipul Bindra: So that's like you did what today.
- 1:50:38Vipul Bindra: Oh great, cool, yeah, exactly, yeah, we don't want to know about black magic.
- 1:50:39Quintin Sanders: What time will you be home?
- 1:50:40Quintin Sanders: That's all I really care about exactly so.
- 1:50:43Quintin Sanders: So just, I think it's just more is just reaching the approaching um and and genuinely you know asking, and I'm pretty sure you'll be happy to find that information and go to where whatever role, like you said, you want to be um, but also yes, and not being afraid to reach out yeah because, for example, I didn't know many people in orlando at that time when I reached out to alex and the only reason why I reached out to him was because I was watching a youtube video on a GH5 or whatever and he made one, and then another YouTube channel was doing a podcast type thing where he had people virtually and Alex was on there and he said he was in Orlando.
- 1:51:29Quintin Sanders: And I'm like, well, I need to reach out.
- 1:51:33Quintin Sanders: And you know, I reached out to a few people that said they were in in town and, um, yeah, we just got over the hump of just reaching out to new people.
- 1:51:43Vipul Bindra: Um, that was the thing.
- 1:51:45Vipul Bindra: But see, you did that and look, he obviously accepted, which is why you know he knew you and it was a little weird, oh, really, and it was a little weird.
- 1:51:57Quintin Sanders: Oh really, what was the weird?
- 1:51:59Quintin Sanders: I want to know this story.
- 1:52:00Vipul Bindra: So I reached out to him on instagram or whatever, and you know he kind of responded how many years have you known him?
- 1:52:03Vipul Bindra: Um since 2020 okay so about four or five years so you're a year earlier than me, because I believe it was 21 when I met you.
- 1:52:13Vipul Bindra: So yeah, a year before then, okay so reached out to him.
- 1:52:18Quintin Sanders: You know, he kind of was like, yeah, yeah, cool, because you know, I said this I am, this is what I do, this is who I am, whatever, whatever.
- 1:52:24Quintin Sanders: He was like, yeah, sounds good.
- 1:52:26Quintin Sanders: Um, and I was like, yeah, let's you know we should meet up, whatever.
- 1:52:29Quintin Sanders: And he was like, yeah, let me get back to you on a date.
- 1:52:32Quintin Sanders: Okay, cool, then I'm going to to best buy to get a hard drive.
- 1:52:39Quintin Sanders: He's in best buy and he's online.
- 1:52:45Quintin Sanders: And it was funny because I was sitting in the car about to go inside and I seen his company shirt on his back, but I didn't know it was him.
- 1:52:54Quintin Sanders: I was like, I've seen that that's his company.
- 1:52:58Quintin Sanders: So I'm like, okay, and as I'm going in the store, I was like, wait, that is him.
- 1:53:02Quintin Sanders: And then I was like, well, shoot, now do I go over there?
- 1:53:05Quintin Sanders: Do I wait till he responds to me on instagram?
- 1:53:07Quintin Sanders: Because I'm like I don't want to be a stalker, you know like, you know just normal people, um.
- 1:53:12Quintin Sanders: But I was like, yeah, why not go over, introduce myself?
- 1:53:17Vipul Bindra: and um, yeah, and that was it that was it.
- 1:53:21Quintin Sanders: I was just like, okay, getting out of my own way yeah, no, because we're not celebrities.
- 1:53:26Vipul Bindra: It'd be one thing you have somebody who's like online influence or whatever, then they'd be like uh no, but we're video people, you know, like.
- 1:53:32Quintin Sanders: So if you just say hi, I'm pretty sure but there's a certain disconnect between watching someone's video online and yeah.
- 1:53:39Quintin Sanders: The real person it's not the same thing when it wasn't planned.
- 1:53:42Quintin Sanders: Yeah, especially.
- 1:53:43Quintin Sanders: Yeah, you just got to be nice.
- 1:53:45Vipul Bindra: Hey, oh, I just noticed.
- 1:53:46Vipul Bindra: Aren't you, alex, something like that right, wouldn't you?
- 1:53:48Vipul Bindra: That's what?
- 1:53:48Vipul Bindra: I would just say that, oh, I think I reached out on instagram, yeah perfect something like that and then just be genuine about it.
- 1:53:56Quintin Sanders: Don't be weird, obviously yeah, and you know, just using that process to reach out to more people, and that snowballed to other people, which snowballs to other people.
- 1:54:05Quintin Sanders: So it's just like just going for it and not being afraid to to fail a little bit.
- 1:54:11Vipul Bindra: Yeah, yeah, because get used to know, because again some people will not respond, and that's okay, you know, this one like don't give up on one person, you know, try, try a few, you know and you never know again.
- 1:54:23Vipul Bindra: People are busy because you have to understand if at least you know, like people who are actually doing this, they're busy, they're like you know, they're actually working professionals.
- 1:54:34Vipul Bindra: That's what you're trying to reach them.
- 1:54:35Vipul Bindra: So you know, time is obviously important.
- 1:54:38Vipul Bindra: But again, I would be personally at least I can speak for myself.
- 1:54:41Vipul Bindra: I'd be happy to share my information, like, uh, my, any information I have.
- 1:54:45Vipul Bindra: It just may be like, hey, I'm traveling right now, but let me get back to you, or, or why don't you reach out?
- 1:54:49Vipul Bindra: Usually I'll tell them because I know I'll forget about it and I don't want to be the the person because you know my priorities are video and family.
- 1:54:55Vipul Bindra: I know everything about my project, but that's it.
- 1:54:57Vipul Bindra: You know I'm not thinking about the rest.
- 1:54:59Vipul Bindra: So I'll be like reach out to me in two weeks and I will happily.
- 1:55:01Vipul Bindra: And then, when they do and you know, I'm happy to meet them.
- 1:55:04Vipul Bindra: Point I'm trying to make is I am, I'm happy to share and everyone I've tried to meet, especially people who are doing well, they're happy to meet and they're happy to share and that's the knowledge.
- 1:55:15Vipul Bindra: Or, like I said, hopefully you know that's the point I'm trying to serve with this podcast is get people information, you know, straight away, while they're driving or whatever.
- 1:55:27Vipul Bindra: So it's free, you know, and even if they learn a little bit, like today.
- 1:55:30Vipul Bindra: For me it's like you know how much money is there in freaking AV and you know, if they don't know that, then you know you wouldn't even pursue it, right Cause when you think video, you're thinking you know this video like live is part of video.
- 1:55:46Quintin Sanders: But we're talking from a operator's perspective, not an owner's.
- 1:55:50Vipul Bindra: Yeah.
- 1:55:51Vipul Bindra: Because, as an operator, yeah you can make pretty good money.
- 1:55:59Vipul Bindra: I mean and I'm just one guy and that's not my full-time Well, you're going to be an owner though.
- 1:56:01Quintin Sanders: I mean, you are an owner, right, right right, but I'm saying, up until a certain point I was just an operator and so just being hired by other companies and you know, as that person, as the operator, knowing what other people making, um, that are doing it full-time, I'm splitting my time.
- 1:56:18Quintin Sanders: You know, video production, uh, av, focusing on trying to break into owning and operating a live event equipment company and all these different things.
- 1:56:29Quintin Sanders: Those guys who are in it 24, 7, tons of guys, of guys who are doing $100,000, $150,000 a year just doing that.
- 1:56:41Quintin Sanders: Yeah.
- 1:56:42Quintin Sanders: But the caveat is you are going a lot, you're always busy.
- 1:56:47Quintin Sanders: Yeah.
- 1:56:49Quintin Sanders: There's not a lot of downtime, but when you give yourself downtime it's good.
- 1:56:53Quintin Sanders: You can kind of do whatever you want.
- 1:56:55Quintin Sanders: Exactly the thing that I don't want to get to is being the guy I met, a guy who owns a sound company, and there was a couple of the older guys sitting around talking after we were already set up, and we're talking about how they used to travel seas and you know, going for this amount of time doing tours and whatnot, and how the relationship with their kids suck, and I'm like, well, I don't want that to be.
- 1:57:21Quintin Sanders: Yeah.
- 1:57:22Quintin Sanders: And so I'm always thinking about that also, trying not to be those people.
- 1:57:27Quintin Sanders: Because one their bodies are jacked up.
- 1:57:30Quintin Sanders: Yeah.
- 1:57:31Quintin Sanders: And two, the relationship with their families are jacked up.
- 1:57:35Quintin Sanders: Yeah.
- 1:57:36Quintin Sanders: But they make tons of money and they're doing what they enjoy yeah, obviously your level of obsession can can can vary.
- 1:57:47Vipul Bindra: Um, yeah, no, it's very important, like what?
- 1:57:49Vipul Bindra: What you're talking about is maintaining a family and you know, work, work, family relationship of balance, basically because at the end they sure, like you, love this and you're passionate about it.
- 1:58:02Vipul Bindra: But you shouldn't consume you, you know you should still take some time, you know, hang out with the people who love you, who care about you.
- 1:58:09Vipul Bindra: Uh, so, you know, so you have a healthy balance of both and you can still make enough money, I think.
- 1:58:15Vipul Bindra: You know.
- 1:58:16Vipul Bindra: I don't know specific to each specific AV industry, but I think you can make enough money and still pay some attention to your family.
- 1:58:25Vipul Bindra: Yeah, I mean you're doing it, yeah, you know.
- 1:58:28Vipul Bindra: So I mean, all I can say is I take huge inspiration from you anyway because, like I said, every time, I know you're doing something and you still travel to family and, like you say, you're paying attention, traveled internationally and paying attention to your family.
- 1:58:44Vipul Bindra: Now I get it.
- 1:58:45Vipul Bindra: If you were doing that every day, that'd be a different thing.
- 1:58:47Vipul Bindra: Right?
- 1:58:47Vipul Bindra: You're finding a balance and that's good that you're not also getting, you know, just bored with it.
- 1:58:52Vipul Bindra: But no man, this has been incredible.
- 1:58:55Vipul Bindra: Thanks for, like I said, taking time out of your time and from your busy schedule and all this feature and the things that you're building now and coming and talking to me.
- 1:59:06Vipul Bindra: Anything you want to add, talk about, ask before we wrap this up.
- 1:59:13Quintin Sanders: Let's see.
- 1:59:14Quintin Sanders: I've also thought about other.
- 1:59:18Quintin Sanders: People have said you should do something similar.
- 1:59:20Quintin Sanders: I'm talking to them.
- 1:59:21Quintin Sanders: I'm like, yeah, it sounds like a good idea, but I don't really want to sit in front of a camera.
- 1:59:27Quintin Sanders: But that was the point of the meetup is having those conversations that you would have one-on-one with different people, have it in a larger space and maybe doing it in front of a camera could help also.
- 1:59:42Quintin Sanders: Yeah, I thought about that, but really the goal this year is completely going into the live space 100%, building that studio space out, putting one to two OB vehicles out there and really diving into the virtual side of things.
- 2:00:02Quintin Sanders: So those are the goals for the year.
- 2:00:05Vipul Bindra: That's pretty good goals.
- 2:00:06Vipul Bindra: I'm excited to see the new studio, I guess, or the new space once it's done, and then also seeing the OB man because, like I said, I wanted to build one for years because we have, we do enough live events where you know it could be beneficial.
- 2:00:21Vipul Bindra: But then again, I'm like I'm traveling so much, would it be like, because all my live events, a lot of them, are, like you know, flying somewhere or doing it.
- 2:00:27Vipul Bindra: Then I'm like, do I want to build a van?
- 2:00:30Vipul Bindra: So it'd be great to have a friend who has one.
- 2:00:32Vipul Bindra: So if I ever do need it, I can obviously work with you on that.
- 2:00:35Vipul Bindra: So that's incredible, man, like I said, you're chasing your goals, you're chasing your dreams and I'm excited about the next meetup as well because, like the last one was a blast.
- 2:00:44Vipul Bindra: I had such a good time and thanks for having me and and feel, you know, be a speaker and speak and I hope people got some value out of it, just like with this.
- 2:00:52Vipul Bindra: I'm just like I just want people to get any value out of it or, worst case, entertainment, because I love podcasts when I'm, you know, driving long drives to miami, atlanta, whatever shoots, and that's my purpose.
- 2:01:03Vipul Bindra: I'm like I'm just trying to make what I want to listen to.
- 2:01:05Vipul Bindra: So, yeah, but that's incredible, you're quentin again.
- 2:01:10Vipul Bindra: Thanks for coming, man, it's always a pleasure to talk to you, and do you want to tell people any instagram or any anywhere where can they go follow you?
- 2:01:17Quintin Sanders: um, I'd have to.
- 2:01:19Quintin Sanders: I would have to have those right and use them yeah, you're like me, you're not posting anything no, but uh, it is going to change because of the new spaces and things available.
- 2:01:31Quintin Sanders: I want to be more visible?
- 2:01:32Quintin Sanders: Um, because just operating as myself I didn't really have to be, because most of the business was word of mouth anyway.
- 2:01:36Quintin Sanders: Yeah, so I didn't have to be more visible because just operating as myself I didn't really have to be, because most of the business was word of mouth anyway.
- 2:01:38Quintin Sanders: Yeah, so I didn't have to be visibly out there, but we spoke about I'm going to change the company name.
- 2:01:44Quintin Sanders: So at the moment it's in this media production, which is a mouthful.
- 2:01:49Quintin Sanders: Yeah.
- 2:01:49Quintin Sanders: But I have decided it's going to be Delta live media.
- 2:01:56Speaker 3: And that's going to be delta live media um and that's going to be everywhere.
- 2:01:59Vipul Bindra: Okay and um, I think we're still working on the studio name for the space, uh, but I guess, once you have all this let me know and we can put it in the description yeah, uh, and people can click on it because, uh, yeah, I would want people to follow you and especially if they have anything about live, they, you know they can reach out.
- 2:02:17Vipul Bindra: Uh, but appreciate you again, man.
- 2:02:19Vipul Bindra: Thank you for coming, it's been a pleasure and, uh, you're welcome back anytime, of course.
- 2:02:23Vipul Bindra: Thanks,
