- 0:00In today's reading, Jeremiah has an intense
- 0:04and a passionate conversation with the Lord.
- 0:09And he asks the Lord, why then does my suffering continue?
- 0:13Why is my wound so incurable? Your help seems
- 0:17as uncertain as a seasonal brook. It is like a spring that
- 0:22has gone dry. And so the Lord answers his piercing,
- 0:26penetrating question. The Lord says in Jeremiah,
- 0:30if you return to Me, I will restore you so you can
- 0:34continue to serve Me. If you speak words that are worthy,
- 0:38you will be My spokesman. You are
- 0:43to influence them. Do not let them influence
- 0:47you. What a
- 0:51weighty, relevant, powerful word.
- 0:55For us today. You,
- 0:58beloved, are to influence the world.
- 1:02Do not let the world influence you.
- 1:07Listen in as we unpack this passage.
- 1:11Welcome to the Daily Audio Torah. Today is October 10th.
- 1:15Now let's continue our journey reading through the entire Bible in one year.
- 1:19This week we are reading from the New Living Translation for the Old Testament
- 1:24And for the New Testament.
- 1:282 Samuel 22:26-51.
- 1:35To the faithful you show yourself faithful; to
- 1:38those with integrity you show integrity.
- 1:41To the pure you show yourself pure, but to
- 1:44the wicked you show yourself hostile.
- 1:48You rescue the humble, But Your eyes watch the proud and humiliate
- 1:52them. O Lord, You are my lamp; the Lord
- 1:56lights up my darkness. In Your strength I can
- 2:00crush an army; with my God I can scale any
- 2:03wall. God's way is perfect; all the
- 2:08Lord's promises prove true. He is a shield for all who
- 2:12look to Him for protection. For who is God except
- 2:16the Lord. Who but our God is a solid rock?
- 2:21God is my strong fortress, and He makes my way perfect.
- 2:26He makes me as sure-footed as a deer, enabling me
- 2:29to stand on mountain heights. He trains my hands
- 2:33for battle; He strengthens my arm to draw a
- 2:36bronze bow. You have given me Your shield of victory; Your
- 2:40help has made me great. You have
- 2:44made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping. I chased
- 2:48my enemies and destroyed them. I did not stop until
- 2:52they were conquered. I consumed them. I struck them down
- 2:55so they did not get up. They fell beneath my feet.
- 2:59You have armed me with strength for the battle. You have subdued
- 3:04my enemies under my feet. You placed my foot on their necks.
- 3:08I have destroyed all who hated me.
- 3:11They looked for help, but no one came to their rescue.
- 3:14They even cried to the Lord, but He refused to answer.
- 3:18I ground them as fine as the dust of the earth.
- 3:21I trampled them in the gutter like dirt. You gave me
- 3:25victory over my accusers. You preserved
- 3:28me as the ruler over nations. People I don't even know now
- 3:32serve me. Foreign nations cringe before me.
- 3:36As soon as they hear of me, they submit. They all lose their courage
- 3:40and come trembling from their strongholds. The Lord
- 3:44lives! Praise to my Rock! May God, the Rock
- 3:48of my salvation, be exalted! He is the one
- 3:51who pays back those who harm me. He brings down the nations
- 3:55under me and delivers me from my enemies. You hold
- 4:00me safe beyond the reach of my enemies. You save me from violent
- 4:04opponents. For this, O Lord, I will praise You among
- 4:08the nations. I will sing praises to Your name.
- 4:13You give great victories to Your king. You show
- 4:16unfailing love to Your anointed, to David and
- 4:20all his descendants, forever.
- 4:28Jeremiah 14:11-16. Jeremiah 14:15.
- 4:33Then the Lord said to me, Jeremiah, do not pray for these people
- 4:37anymore. When they fast in my presence, I will pay no attention.
- 4:41When they present their burnt offerings and grain offerings to me, I will
- 4:45not accept them. In return, I will give them only war,
- 4:49famine, and disease. Then I said,
- 4:52O Sovereign Lord, their prophets are telling them all is well,
- 4:56no war or famine will come. The Lord will surely send you peace.
- 5:01Then the Lord said, these prophets are telling lies in My name.
- 5:05I did not send them or tell them to speak. I did not give
- 5:08them any messages. They prophesy visions and revelations
- 5:12they have never seen or heard. They speak
- 5:15foolishness made up in their own lying hearts.
- 5:19Therefore, says the Lord, I will punish these lying prophets,
- 5:23for they have spoken in My name even though I never sent them.
- 5:27They say that no war or famine will come, but they themselves
- 5:31will die by war and famine. As for the people
- 5:34to whom they prophesy, their bodies will be thrown out
- 5:38into the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and war.
- 5:44There will be no one left to bury them— husbands, wives, sons, and daughters.
- 5:48All will be gone, for I will pour out their own wickedness
- 5:52on them. Now, Jeremiah, say this to them: Night
- 5:57and day my eyes overflow with tears. I cannot stop weeping
- 6:00for my virgin daughter. My precious people has been run
- 6:04through with a sword and lies mortally wounded on the ground.
- 6:09If I go out into the fields, I see the bodies of people slaughtered by
- 6:13the enemy. If I walk the city streets, there I see people who have died
- 6:17of starvation. The prophets and priests continue with their work,
- 6:21but they do not know what they are doing.
- 6:24Lord, have you completely rejected Judah? Do you really hate
- 6:29Jerusalem? Why have you wounded us past all hope of
- 6:33healing? We hoped for peace, but no peace came.
- 6:37We hoped for a time of healing, but found only terror.
- 6:43Lord, we confess our wickedness and that of our ancestors
- 6:47too. We all have sinned against You.
- 6:50For the sake of Your own name, Lord, do not abandon us.
- 6:55Do not disgrace Yourself and the throne of Your glory.
- 6:58Do not break Your covenant with us. Please don't forget
- 7:03us. Can any
- 7:06of the foreign gods send us rain? Does it fall from the
- 7:10sky by itself? No, it comes from You, the Lord
- 7:14our God. Only You can do such things, so we will wait for You to
- 7:17help us. Then the Lord said to me,
- 7:21Even if Moses and Samuel stood before Me pleading for these people,
- 7:25I wouldn't help them. Away with them! Get them out of
- 7:29My sight! And if they say to you, But where can we go? Tell them,
- 7:33This is what the Lord says: Those who are destined for death,
- 7:37to death; those who are destined for war, to war.
- 7:40Those who are destined for famine, to famine; those who are
- 7:43destined for captivity, to captivity.
- 7:47I will send 4 kinds of destroyers against them, says the Lord.
- 7:51I will send the sword to kill, the dogs to drag
- 7:55away, the vultures to devour, and the wild animals to finish
- 7:59up what is left. Because of the wicked things Manasseh
- 8:03son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, did in Jerusalem,
- 8:07I will make My people an object of horror to all the kingdoms of
- 8:11the earth. Who will feel sorry for you,
- 8:14Jerusalem? Who will weep for you? Who will even bother
- 8:18to ask how you are? You have forsaken Me and turned your
- 8:22back on Me, says the Lord. Therefore, I will raise My clenched
- 8:26fists to destroy you. I am tired of always giving
- 8:30you another chance. I will
- 8:34winnow you like grain at the gates of your cities and take away everything
- 8:38you hold dear. I will destroy My own people because
- 8:42they refuse to turn back to Me from all their evil
- 8:47ways. There will be more widows than the grains
- 8:51of sand along the seashore. At noontime, I will bring a destroyer
- 8:55against the mothers of young men. I will cause anguish and terror to come
- 8:59upon them suddenly. The mother of 7 grows faint
- 9:03and gasps for breath. Her son has gone down while
- 9:07it is yet day. She sits childless now, disgraced and
- 9:11humiliated. And those who are left I will hand over to the enemy
- 9:15to be killed, says the Lord.
- 9:18Then I said, what sadness is mine, my mother! Oh, that I
- 9:23had died at birth! I am hated everywhere I go. I am neither
- 9:26a lender who has threatened to foreclose, nor a borrower who
- 9:31refuses to pay. Yet they all curse me.
- 9:35The Lord replied, all will be well with you, Jeremiah.
- 9:38Your enemies will ask you to plead on their behalf
- 9:42in times of trouble and distress. Can a man break
- 9:46a bar of iron from the north, or a bar of bronze? Because of all
- 9:50my people's sins against me, I will hand over their wealth and treasures
- 9:54as plunder to the enemy. I will tell their enemies
- 9:57to take them as captives to a foreign land, for my anger
- 10:01blazes forth like fire, and it will consume
- 10:05them. Then I said,
- 10:08Lord, you know I am suffering for your sake.
- 10:12Punish my persecutors. Don't let them kill me. Be merciful
- 10:16to me and give them what they deserve. Your words are what sustain me.
- 10:20They bring me great joy and are my heart's delight,
- 10:24for I bear your name, O Lord God Almighty.
- 10:29I never joined the people in their merry feasts.
- 10:32I sat alone because your hand was on me. I burst
- 10:36with indignation at their sins. Why then does my suffering
- 10:39continue? Why is my wound so incurable?
- 10:45Your help seems as uncertain as a seasonal brook.
- 10:48It is like a spring that has gone dry.
- 10:52The Lord replied, If you return to Me,
- 10:56I will restore you so you can continue to serve Me.
- 11:00If you speak words that are worthy, you will be My spokesmen.
- 11:05You are to influence them. Do not let them influence you.
- 11:10They will fight against you like an attacking army, but I will
- 11:14make you as secure as a fortified wall.
- 11:17They will not conquer you, for I will protect and deliver
- 11:21you. I, the Lord, have spoken.
- 11:25Yes, I will certainly keep you safe from these wicked
- 11:29men. I will rescue you from their cruel hands.
- 11:34The Lord gave me another message. He said, do not marry or
- 11:37have children in this place, for this is what the Lord says about
- 11:41the children born here in this city and about their mothers and fathers.
- 11:46They will die from terrible diseases. No one will
- 11:49mourn for them or bury them, and they will lie scattered on the ground like
- 11:53dung. They will die from war and famine, and their bodies
- 11:57will be food for the vultures and wild animals. Do not
- 12:01go to their funerals to mourn and show sympathy for them, says the Lord.
- 12:05For I have removed my protection and peace from them. I have
- 12:09taken away my unfailing love and my mercy. Both the
- 12:13great and the lowly will die in this land. No one
- 12:17will bury them or mourn for them. Their friends will not
- 12:20cut themselves or shave their heads in sadness.
- 12:23No one will offer a meal to comfort those who mourn for the
- 12:27dead, not even the death of a mother or a father.
- 12:31No one will send a cup of wine to console them. And do
- 12:35not go to their feasts and parties. Do not eat and drink with them
- 12:39at all. For the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says,
- 12:43In your own lifetime, before your very eyes, I will put
- 12:47an end to the happy singing and laughter in this land. The joyful
- 12:51voices of bridegrooms and brides will no longer be heard.
- 12:54When you tell the people all these things, they will ask, Why has
- 12:58the Lord decreed such terrible things against us? What have we done
- 13:02to deserve such treatment? What is our sin against the Lord our
- 13:06God? Tell them that this is the Lord's reply: It is
- 13:10because your ancestors were unfaithful to Me.
- 13:13They worshiped other gods and served them. They abandoned
- 13:18Me. They did not keep My Law. And you
- 13:22are even worse than your ancestors.
- 13:26You stubbornly follow your own evil desires, and you refuse
- 13:31to listen to Me. So I will throw you out of this land and
- 13:35send you into a foreign land where you and your ancestors
- 13:39have never been. There you can worship idols all
- 13:43you like, and I will grant you no favors. But the
- 13:48time is coming, says the Lord, when the people who are taking an oath will
- 13:52no longer say, as surely as the Lord lives, who rescued the people
- 13:55of Israel from the land of Egypt. Instead, they will say,
- 13:59As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the people of Israel back
- 14:04to their own land from the land of the north
- 14:08and from all the countries to which He had exiled them.
- 14:11For I will bring them back to this land that I gave their
- 14:16ancestors. 1 Thessalonians 2:9-3:13.
- 14:22Don't you remember, dear brothers and sisters, how hard we,
- 14:25Paul and his coworkers, worked among you, Night and day we
- 14:30toiled to earn a living so that our expenses would not be a burden to
- 14:33anyone there as we preached God's good news among you.
- 14:37You yourselves are our witnesses, and so is God,
- 14:41that we were pure and honest and faultless toward all of you believers.
- 14:46And you know that we treated each of you as a father treats
- 14:49his own children. We pleaded with you,
- 14:52encouraged you, and urged you to live your lives in a way that God
- 14:56would consider worthy. Where he called you into his kingdom to
- 15:00share his glory. And we will never stop thanking
- 15:04God that when we preached his message to you,
- 15:07you didn't think of the words we spoke as being just our own.
- 15:11You accepted what we said as the very word of God, which of course
- 15:15it was. And this word continues to work in you who believe.
- 15:20And then, dear brothers and sisters, you suffered persecution from your own
- 15:24countrymen In this way you imitated the
- 15:28believers in God's churches in Judea who, because of
- 15:31their belief in Christ Jesus, suffered from their own people, the Jews.
- 15:36For some of the Jews had killed their own prophets, and some even
- 15:39killed the Lord Jesus. Now they have persecuted
- 15:43us and driven us out. They displease God
- 15:47and oppose everyone by trying to keep us from preaching the Good News to
- 15:50the Gentiles, for fear some might be saved. By doing
- 15:55this, they continue to pile up their sins. But the anger
- 15:59of God has caught up with them at last. Dear brothers and
- 16:03sisters, after we were separated from you for a little while,
- 16:07though our hearts never left you, we tried
- 16:11very hard to come back because of our intense longing to see you again.
- 16:15We wanted very much to come, and I, Paul, tried again
- 16:18and again, but Satan prevented us.
- 16:21After all, what gives us hope and joy, and what is our proud reward
- 16:25and crown? It is you! Yes,
- 16:29you will bring us much joy as we stand together before our Lord Jesus
- 16:33when he comes back again, for you are our
- 16:37pride and joy. Finally, when we could stand it
- 16:41no longer, we decided that I should stay alone in Athens,
- 16:44and we sent Timothy to visit you. He is our coworker
- 16:48for God and our brother in proclaiming the good news of Christ.
- 16:52We sent him to strengthen you, to encourage you in your faith, and to
- 16:56keep you from becoming disturbed by the troubles you were going through.
- 17:00But of course, you know that such troubles are going to happen to us
- 17:03Christians. Even while we were with you, we warned you
- 17:07that troubles would soon come, and they did, as you well
- 17:11know. That is why, when I could bear it no longer,
- 17:15I sent Timothy to find out whether your faith was still strong.
- 17:19I was afraid that the tempter had gotten the best of you and
- 17:22that all our work had been useless. Now Timothy
- 17:26has just returned, bringing the good news that your faith and love are
- 17:30as strong as ever. He reports that you
- 17:33remember our visit with joy and that you want to see
- 17:36us just as much as we want to see you. So we
- 17:41have been greatly comforted, dear brothers and sisters, in all of our crushing
- 17:45troubles and suffering because you have remained
- 17:49strong in your faith. It gives
- 17:53us new life knowing you remain strong in the Lord.
- 17:58Oh, we thank God for you! Because of you, we have great
- 18:01joy in the presence of God. Night and day we pray earnestly
- 18:06for you, asking God to let us see you again, to fill up anything that
- 18:09may still be missing in your faith. May God himself,
- 18:13our Father and our Lord Jesus, make it possible for
- 18:17us to come to you very soon. And may the Lord make your love
- 18:21grow and overflow to each other and to everyone else,
- 18:25just as our love overflows toward you.
- 18:28As a result, Christ will make your hearts strong,
- 18:32blameless, and holy when you stand before God our Father
- 18:36on that day when our Lord Jesus comes with all those
- 18:41who belong to Him.
- 18:47Psalm 80:1-19.
- 18:51Please listen, O Shepherd of Israel,
- 18:54you who lead Israel like a flock. O God, enthroned above
- 18:58the cherubim, display your radiant glory to Ephraim,
- 19:01Benjamin, and Manasseh. Show us your mighty power.
- 19:05Come to rescue us. Turn us again to yourself, O God.
- 19:09Make your face shine down upon us. Only then will we be
- 19:13saved. O Lord God Almighty, how long will you be angry
- 19:16and reject our prayers? You have fed us with sorrow
- 19:20and made us drink tears by the bucketful. You have
- 19:23made us the scorn of neighboring nations. Our enemies
- 19:27treat us as a joke.
- 19:31Turn us again to Yourself, O God Almighty.
- 19:35Make Your face shine down upon us. Only then will we
- 19:38be saved. You brought us from Egypt as though
- 19:42we were a tender vine. You drove away the pagan nations and
- 19:45transplanted us into Your land. You cleared the ground
- 19:50for us and we took root and filled the land. The mountains were
- 19:54covered with our shade. The mighty cedars were covered with our branches.
- 19:58We spread our branches west to the Mediterranean Sea, our limbs
- 20:02east to the Euphrates River. But now, why have you
- 20:06broken down our walls so that all who pass may steal our
- 20:10fruit? The boar from the forest devours us,
- 20:13and the wild animals feed on us. Come back,
- 20:16we beg you, O God Almighty! Look down from heaven
- 20:21and see our plight. Watch over and care for this vine that you yourself
- 20:25have planted, this son you have raised for yourself.
- 20:29For we are chopped up and burned by our enemies. May they
- 20:33perish at the sight of your frown. Strengthen the man you love,
- 20:36the son of your choice. Then we will never forsake
- 20:40you again. Revive us so we can call on your name once more.
- 20:45Turn us again to yourself, O Lord God Almighty.
- 20:48Make your face shine down upon us. Only then will
- 20:52we be saved.
- 20:57Proverbs 25:1-5. These are more
- 21:01proverbs of Solomon, collected by the advisers of King Hezekiah
- 21:05of Judah. It is God's privilege to conceal things
- 21:09and the king's privilege to discover them. No one can
- 21:13discover the height of heaven, the depth of the earth, or all
- 21:17that goes on in the king's mind. Remove the dross
- 21:20from silver and the sterling will be ready for the silversmith.
- 21:24Remove the wicked from the king's court and his reign will
- 21:27be made secure by justice.
- 21:33I want to speak to you today from our reading from 2 Samuel
- 21:3622, and then we're going to jump into Jeremiah 14 and 15.
- 21:41And This chapter, as you recall from
- 21:45yesterday, this is a song that David sang to the
- 21:49Lord on the day that the Lord rescued him from
- 21:52all of his enemies and from Saul. Now in his
- 21:56life, he was pursued by Saul for many years,
- 22:01and over and over again Saul tried to kill him, but he refused to
- 22:05lift his hand against the Lord's Anointed
- 22:08One. He, he completely trusted God to
- 22:13take care of the situation, and he would not take matters into his own
- 22:17hands. So ultimately, when Saul died
- 22:21in battle and David was rescued from all of
- 22:24these enemies, this is the song that he sang from his heart.
- 22:28And today we begin in verse 26.
- 22:34And it says, to the faithful, you show yourself faithful.
- 22:38To those with integrity, you show your integrity. To the pure,
- 22:42you show yourself pure. But to the wicked, you show yourself
- 22:46hostile. This is reminiscent of
- 22:50the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter 5. There's a parallel here
- 22:56with the blessings where Yeshua,
- 22:59Jesus, says, In Matthew 5:5, blessed are the meek,
- 23:04for they shall inherit the earth. Verse 6, blessed are those who hunger
- 23:08and thirst for righteousness, they shall be filled.
- 23:12Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain
- 23:15mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart,
- 23:20for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers,
- 23:24for they shall be called sons of God.
- 23:28And so whatever righteous
- 23:33or godly character trait is being displayed
- 23:39or manifested in your own life, you're going to— this comes
- 23:42from God. It comes from Him. This is a
- 23:46revealing of His nature and His character.
- 23:49He goes on to say in 2 Samuel 22:28, you rescue the
- 23:54humble, But your eyes watch the proud and you humiliate
- 23:58them. And it goes on to say, now this is David speaking and
- 24:02he is speaking it from a place of knowing because
- 24:06he has experienced it. These are not just pretty words.
- 24:10He has lived this out in his life. 2 Samuel
- 24:1422:29, O Lord, you are my lamp.
- 24:18The Lord lights up my darkness. Now think about
- 24:22it. There were times when David hid in the caves in the
- 24:26desert to get away from Saul. He hid in the caves and there
- 24:31were no flashlights back then. They may have had candles, but they didn't
- 24:35put out a whole lot of light. And he is speaking from a place
- 24:39of knowing, O Lord, you are my lamp. The Lord lights up
- 24:43my darkness. Verse 30, in your strength, I can crush
- 24:47an army. With my God, I can scale any wall.
- 24:53And so he is such an example
- 24:57of someone who really poured out his heart to God, praised Him,
- 25:01had a true relationship and connection with the God
- 25:06of Israel. And he's imperfect. He's an imperfect man.
- 25:10He sinned with Bathsheba.
- 25:14And committed sexual adultery
- 25:17with her even though she was married to Uriah. He had Uriah killed,
- 25:22basically sent him to his death. And yet God says he
- 25:26is a man after God's own heart because
- 25:30he was quick to repent when he was confronted with
- 25:34his sin regarding Bathsheba and Nathan the prophet came to him
- 25:39When Nathan pointed out his sin, David hit the deck
- 25:43and he repented. So this, I believe,
- 25:47is what made him a man after God's own heart. We don't have to be
- 25:51perfect, but we have to be inclined towards the
- 25:55Lord. And when we blow it and sin,
- 25:58we need to be quick to repent. Now I want to jump into
- 26:02Jeremiah chapter 14.
- 26:05And there's an interesting conversation that goes on here.
- 26:10And basically Jeremiah is living in a time when
- 26:14his nation is about to be taken away into captivity
- 26:18because of the immense amount of wickedness
- 26:22and idolatry. And the people
- 26:26have turned away from God and they have been following
- 26:30their own evil inclinations.
- 26:34So Jeremiah is seeing all of the destruction
- 26:38that's going on around him and the wickedness and the
- 26:42sin of his people, and it is absolutely breaking his
- 26:45heart. You see, the relationship that God intended to have
- 26:50with His children was like a marriage,
- 26:53a covenant. And when the 10 Commandments
- 26:56was given to them, by Moses at Mount Sinai.
- 27:00It was like a ketubah, a marriage covenant. And when
- 27:04the people said, yes, we will obey, that was their I do.
- 27:08And then they immediately went off into spiritual
- 27:12adultery, idolatry, while Moses was away
- 27:16up on the mountain, and they built that golden calf. And so it
- 27:20was treachery, betrayal. It was chasing after
- 27:24other gods. I don't know if any of you who are listening have
- 27:27ever experienced what it's like to go through a
- 27:32betrayal on the marriage bed, that if you're married and then your spouse
- 27:36cheats on you and they sleep with somebody else, it's probably one of
- 27:40the most painful kinds of betrayals that
- 27:44you could ever walk through.
- 27:46And so if you have had
- 27:50that kind of pain or trauma in your life, That's similar to how God
- 27:55has felt when His people go into idolatry.
- 28:01Now let's jump into Jeremiah 15:16.
- 28:05Your words are what sustain me, says Jeremiah. They bring
- 28:09me great joy and are my heart's delight,
- 28:12for I bear Your name, O Lord God Almighty. I never
- 28:17join the people in their merry feasts, I sat alone because your hand was
- 28:21on me. I burst with indignation at their sins.
- 28:25Why then does my suffering continue?
- 28:28Why is my wound so incurable?
- 28:32Your help seems as uncertain as a seasonal brook. It is like
- 28:36a spring that has gone dry. So Jeremiah is pouring out his heart to
- 28:40the Lord. He's having a conversation with him.
- 28:44So the Lord speaks to him. And in verse 19,
- 28:47the Lord replies, if you return to Me,
- 28:50Jeremiah, I will restore you so you can continue
- 28:54to serve Me. If you speak words that are worthy,
- 28:57you will be My spokesman. You are to influence them.
- 29:02Do not let them influence you.
- 29:06That is an incredible and amazing principle.
- 29:10Let that sink down into your spirit deeply.
- 29:14That is a word for today. You are
- 29:18to influence them, the people around you. Do not
- 29:22let them influence you. And yet
- 29:26so many people, even in the church, have been
- 29:32taken captive because of the social media,
- 29:36because of the tweets and the texts and all the propaganda.
- 29:39That's in the legacy media.
- 29:43There's people that have taken sides with Hamas,
- 29:47and they march in the streets with Hamas and take the sides of
- 29:51Hamas, the murderers, the monsters that murdered
- 29:55so many Jews on October 7th. And they've
- 29:59allowed the world to influence them instead
- 30:03of the other way around. So this is an important word
- 30:06to really let it sink deep into your spirit. You are to influence the
- 30:10world. Do not let the world influence you.
- 30:15The Lord goes on to say to Jeremiah, they will not conquer you,
- 30:19for I will protect you and deliver you. I, the Lord, have spoken.
- 30:23Yes, I will certainly keep you safe from these wicked men.
- 30:27I will rescue you from their cruel hands.
- 30:32And so he's resolved in
- 30:36this conversation. The Lord's saying, I'm going to protect you. I will be with you.
- 30:40I will restore you. You can continue to serve me.
- 30:44But ultimately, the children of Israel
- 30:48do get conquered by
- 30:52Babylon, and they go into exile, and basically they get vomited
- 30:56out of the land. And the Lord allows this to
- 30:59happen because he uses the invading
- 31:02nation of Babylon and also the invading nation of Assyria
- 31:06for the Northern Kingdom, the Southern Kingdom, Judah is taken into captivity
- 31:11in 586 BC by Babylon, and the Northern
- 31:15Kingdom goes into exile with Assyria a
- 31:18couple of hundred years sooner than that. Why?
- 31:22Verse 13 in chapter 16,
- 31:27verse 13. I'm going to back it up to verse 11.
- 31:30Tell them that this is the Lord's reply. Well, they're asking,
- 31:35why has the Lord decreed such terrible things?
- 31:39Against us? Why have— what have we done to deserve such treatment?
- 31:42What is our sin against the Lord? And then verse 11,
- 31:47the Lord tells Jeremiah to tell the people, tell them that this
- 31:51is the Lord's reply. It is because your ancestors were unfaithful
- 31:56to me. They cheated on him. They committed
- 31:59spiritual adultery against him. They worshiped
- 32:03other gods and served them and they abandoned
- 32:08me. That would be like if your spouse picked
- 32:12up and left and went off to some hotel and was with
- 32:16a harlot, a prostitute, and then never came home
- 32:19again. Just went after one harlot after another after
- 32:24another and just abandoned the family.
- 32:27That's the closest example I
- 32:31can give you. They abandoned Me. They did not keep My law.
- 32:35And you are even worse than your ancestors. You stubbornly
- 32:38follow your own evil desires and refuse
- 32:42to listen to Me. And so that's why they
- 32:47are under God's judgment. And now in verse 13, He shares with them,
- 32:51this is what your consequence is going to be.
- 32:56So I will throw you out of this land and
- 32:59send you into a foreign land where you and your ancestors
- 33:04have never been. There you can worship idols all you like, and I
- 33:07will grant you no favors.
- 33:12God hates idolatry.
- 33:16He does not like to be ignored. He does
- 33:19not want us to disobey and to rebel and to do,
- 33:23you know, there's your truth and my truth and his truth
- 33:27and her truth. And no, I'm sorry, there's only one truth.
- 33:31And that truth is Jesus Christ. Truth is a person.
- 33:35Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the
- 33:39life. And we discover that
- 33:42truth by reading the Word of God.
- 33:46Jesus reveals Himself to us through the Word of God.
- 33:52That's all I have for today. Have a blessed day, and we will see you
- 33:55tomorrow. Shalom.
