- 0:00We are not destined to be the puppet or plaything of the
- 0:05external nature property through the working of the three gunas
- 0:09or qualities of nature. When we shift our standpoint to
- 0:14that of the Divine, when we recognize our Oneness with the
- 0:18creative force, we can participate in the ordering and
- 0:22the ordaining of the Divine manifestation.
- 0:27We may be immersed in the play of procrity.
- 0:30When we shift to the standpoint of the Purusha, the witness
- 0:34consciousness, we begin by observing at a certain stage.
- 0:39When we recognize our Oneness with the Eternal, then we can
- 0:43identify as the giver of the sanction for that existence to
- 0:48manifest. Sri Aurobindo translates verse
- 0:5216 of the Ishu Upanishad. O Foster, O soul seer, O
- 0:59Ordainer, O illumining son, O power of the Father of
- 1:04creatures, Marshall thy rays draw together thy light, the
- 1:10luster which is thy most blessed form of all.
- 1:13That in thee I behold the Purusha There, and there he am
- 1:19I. The Mundaka Upanishad affirms he
- 1:25verily, who knows that Supreme Brahman becomes himself Brahman.
- 1:32The Titiri Upanishad makes the oneness quite clear.
- 1:37The spirit who is here in a man, and the spirit who is there in
- 1:41the sun, It is one spirit and there is no other.
- 1:47And I am he that moveth the tree of the universe, and my glory is
- 1:54like the shoulders of a high mountain.
- 1:57And I am He who maketh scripture.
- 2:02I am the first born of the law, before the gods were.
- 2:06I am, Yeah, at the very heart of immortality.
- 2:12Thus the seers of the Upanishad saw the basis for the Purusha
- 2:16taking an active organizing and manifesting role in managing and
- 2:22directing the actions of Prakriti.
- 2:25We are subject to the possibility of self delusion.
- 2:29We may believe we have shifted the standpoint and thus have
- 2:32gained the necessary perspective and freedom to act.
- 2:37The Titiriopanishad has a simple test for this.
- 2:41But when the Spirit that is within us maketh for himself
- 2:45even a little difference in the Eternal, then he hath fear.
- 2:50Yeah, the Eternal Himself becometh a terror to such a
- 2:55knower who thinketh not. The universal manifestation
- 3:01creates modes of action which become fixed as habitual
- 3:04patterns for a time. So long as we are immersed in
- 3:09the external actions of nature, we are moved by the forces and
- 3:13patterns. Yet none of these habits are
- 3:16immutable for all time. When we shift to the standpoint
- 3:21of the Creator, the Divine, the Eternal, we can participate
- 3:26actively in providing the sanction or withdrawing it from
- 3:31accepting the habitual pattern, or working to bring about change
- 3:36through the application of consciousness force.
- 3:41Shrioro Bindu observes quote. Finally the mind will come to
- 3:46know the Purusha in the mind as the Master of nature, whose
- 3:50sanction is necessary to her movements.
- 3:54It will find that as the giver of the sanction he can withdraw
- 3:57the original Fiat from the previous habits of nature, and
- 4:02that eventually the habit will cease or change in the direction
- 4:06indicated by the will of the Purusha.
- 4:10Not at once, for the old sanction persists as an
- 4:14obstinate consequence of the past karma of nature until that
- 4:18is exhausted. And a good deal also depends on
- 4:22the force of the habit and the idea of fundamental necessity
- 4:26which the mind had previously attached to it.
- 4:30But if it is not one of the fundamental habits nature has
- 4:33established for the relation of the mind, life and body, and if
- 4:39the old sanction is not renewed by the mind or the habit
- 4:42willingly indulged, then eventually the change will come.
- 4:48Even the habit of hunger and thirst can be minimized,
- 4:52inhibited, put away. The habit of disease can be
- 4:56similarly minimized and gradually eliminated.
- 5:00And in the meantime, the power of the mind to set right the
- 5:04disorders of the body, whether by conscious manipulation of
- 5:08vital force or by simple mental Fiat, will immensely increase.
- 5:14By a similar process, the habit by which the bodily nature
- 5:18associates certain forms and degrees of activity with strain,
- 5:24fatigue, incapacity, can be rectified.
- 5:29And the power, freedom, swiftness, effectiveness of the
- 5:34work, whether physical or mental, which can be done with
- 5:37this bodily instrument, marvellously increased, doubled,
- 5:42tripled, decoupled. End Quote.
