- 1:07part. In this case, the missing part is part four, which is
- 1:10usually a pretty important part in the show. So this can appear to be
- 1:19a bit awkward, so your patience is appreciated, by the way. The
- 1:23source of what actually happened, we're using the Who Is Johnny Dollar Matter by

- 1:53But without any further ado, let's go ahead and get into part three of
- 1:57the Lonely Heart Matter from Hollywood. I'm now for Johnny Dollar, ready with
- 2:06your call to Hartford, mister Dollar, Go ahead, please, Johnny.
- 2:09What's up? Funny, Dave? The Wells girl was right, her father
- 2:13was murdered. We just got the autopsy report. He died from a dose
- 2:15of ground glass. And I'll put a stop order on the insurance claim.
- 2:19It was filed this afternoon on something else, Dave. A man died in
- 2:22Saint Louis about two and a half years ago. I wonder if you'd have
- 2:24mutual record service check and see if he was insured. His name was Walter
- 2:28Maberley Burke. Burke. Yeah, I know. Jonathan Wells widow was previously
- 2:32married to Burke. They were married at the time of his death, and
- 2:36he also died suddenly and mysteriously. Holy Smoked just called her murdering Mabel.
- 2:40Oh you have met her, Dave. She's just a sweet old lady who's
- 2:44had a little bad luck now and then, and she regards death as the
- 2:47doorway to a greater and more glorious life. Oh well, that sounds very
- 2:52noble. They would if she didn't keep slamming the door tonight and every weekday
- 3:04night. Bob Bailey in the transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed
- 3:07Expenser, Cord America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigator, Ours Truly Johnny Dollar. From
- 3:27Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location Chicago to the home office Northwestern Surty Company,
- 3:30Hartford, Connecticut. Assignment the Lonely Hearts Matter expense account continued rightam. Eight
- 3:43seven dollars and sixty five cents dinner for normal Wells myself. It was brought
- 3:46up by room service and wead alone in my suite holm. I didn't feel
- 3:50like facing the dining room. I was still trying to figure her out when
- 3:54she'd come to me with a claim that her father had been poisoned by her
- 3:57stepmother for his insurance. I'd tagged her for a jealous, hysterical kid,
- 4:01and that's still what. But now with the autopsy report, and it was
- 4:05more than that, she was right. Jonathan Wells had been poisoned. And
- 4:10again when she told me someone was hanging around her apartment, I only have
- 4:14believed her. But by now I was about ready to believe anything. I
- 4:18sworn. I couldn't eat a bite. Well, you needed it. You've
- 4:21been going on nothing but nerve that'll still be till this is all over.
- 4:27Well, it shouldn't take long. Now that autopsy report gives us the green
- 4:30light. The police will move in now and we can put the pressure on.
- 4:32It's such a terrible thing. But why six months ago when she married
- 4:38him, she was planning this? Right then? It looks that way,
- 4:42all right. My father was always so good to her, Yes, and
- 4:44to that worthless nephew of hers, Burton Creeley. What kind of a mind
- 4:48does a person have, mister Dollar, to do a thing like she did?
- 4:51Well, it hasn't been proved yet that she's the one who did it,
- 4:54Miss Wells, No, but who else could have? I don't know?
- 5:00More coffee? No? Thanks? Well, whenever your friendish, we'll
- 5:02take a taxi over to your apartment and pick up whatever you need and then
- 5:05get you a room here at the hotel. I don't think you're in danger,
- 5:10but I imagine you'll feel a lot less nervous here. I will,
- 5:13and I do appreciate your help and kindness. Mister dollars, I got it.
- 5:16That's part of my job. Only this time. When you check in,
- 5:19you go to your room and stay put. What do you mean?
- 5:24When I came back from talking to Mabel Burke, Max Lancer from the DA's
- 5:27office was waiting for me down in the lobby. He said he'd phoned here
- 5:30to the room five or six times, got no answer. I was here.
- 5:32I heard the phone, but well, I didn't know if you wanted
- 5:35me to answer. He sent a bell boy up to knock on the door.
- 5:40I must have been in the shower. I was here all the time.
- 5:44Don't you believe me? Any reason I shouldn't believe you? Are you
- 5:48through reading? Yes? Okay, let's go expense account out of nine a
- 5:57dollar and eighty cents taxi from the hotel to norm Ols apartment. Night had
- 6:00fallen over the city, and the tall buildings of the Loop shimmered above the
- 6:03noisy blaze of lights, Laughing groups of early dinner goers johnstle through the scrambling
- 6:09packs of late shoppers, auto horns blaring jazz newsboys traffic whistles. Hurry,
- 6:14hurry, hurry. Yesterday never was, tomorrow is only a dream, and
- 6:16today is nearly gone. So hurried up and let's get going. We'll sleep
- 6:20when we're dead. Like Jonathan Wells on his cool marble slab in the city
- 6:26Morgue. It's apartment. See the next door on the left right, Have
- 6:32a key here somewhere? Sure you locked in? Oh? Yes, I
- 6:35always it's not locked. Well you were scared when you left it? Maybe?
- 6:41No, I remember locking the door? You sure? Yes? Now
- 6:46it's what is it? Mister dollar? Come on in? Oh? Oh,
- 7:08Lex says, Oh, you've had visitors, Miss Wells. Oh place
- 7:11turned upside down? Why would anyone want to do that looking for something?
- 7:15Probably? I don't know. I suppose you look around see if you notice
- 7:17anything missing. It's no use, mister dollar. I've gone through the whole
- 7:29place twice now, and I'm certain that nothing's been taken. But they had
- 7:32to have some reason to break in here, go through everything this way.
- 7:36Well, I'm positive there's nothing missing, all right, there isn't There isn't.
- 7:42Well do you suppose that coffee is right now? Oh? I think
- 7:44so? Come on in the kitchen, I guess you'll believe me now.
- 7:48Somebody was hanging around here earlier today. Just wish I could figure out what
- 7:53they're acting. Looks plenty strong. There's sugar there on the table. I'll
- 8:00get some cream from the refrigerator. Don't bother on my accountant. I don't
- 8:03get black, well, not me. I use plenty of boat, lots
- 8:07lots of cream, and two heaping spoons of sugar. They must have had
- 8:13a reason to break in here. If it wasn't to steal something, then
- 8:16what was the reason. Sugar looked funny? Doesn't make sense at all.
- 8:20I guess I got to keep it covered sugar, I was saying, it
- 8:24looked funny. Yeah, wait a minute, maybe they broke in to leave
- 8:28something, leave some Yeah, here, give me that cup and the spoon.
- 8:35What are you doing? Look, and that's funny. Didn't even dissolve.
- 8:41The sugar dissolved, all right? Well, then what's that in the
- 8:43spoon round glass? I phoned Max Lancer and had him send over a policewoman
- 8:52to accompany normal Wells back to the hotel, get her checked in and stay
- 8:56with her overnight. Then I call the Whales residents. The old lady answered
- 9:01the phone herself, and I asked for her nephew, Burton Creepy. She
- 9:03said he wasn't in, so on an off chance, I took a taxi
- 9:07to the office of the Rendezvous club, Lonely Heart's Unlimited. There was no
- 9:11light showing behind the transom over the door. The door was unlocked. I
- 9:22fumbled around for a light switch, but somebody beat me to it. Put
- 9:26your hands up. Wow, at least I've found you in this time.
- 9:31What are you're doing it? How are you put that gun away, Crely
- 9:35or are you gonna use it? You'd better take the safety off. First
- 9:37safety, What are you doing? All right? Let's go over Craly.
- 9:43Thanks. You think you'll get away with this? Mister? You're crazy.
- 9:46My mistake the safety was off. Sorry to rough you up, but I
- 9:50don't like people who go around pointing guns at people without any reason for it.
- 9:52You broke in here, that's illegal entry. I'll have you arrest.
- 9:56Why not? Why not? The phone's right behind you. Who are you
- 10:00anywhere? Shohanny Dollar. I'm a special investigator for the Northwestern Surety Company.
- 10:05What I imagine the name is familiar to you since they're holding a fifty thousand
- 10:09dollars life insurance policy on the lake Jonathan Wells, with your aunt Mabel named
- 10:13as beneficiary. What are you doing here? Looking for you? As a
- 10:16matter of fact? What for? I wanted to ask you why you sneak
- 10:20down through the door there the other day in the office when I was here
- 10:24earlier. I don't know what you're talking about. I'll knock it off,
- 10:26creally, you got in such a hurry you left your cigar burning there in
- 10:30the ashtray, the same brand you're smoking right now. I thought you were
- 10:35a bill collector. You knew who I was. You were listening there at
- 10:37the door while I talked to your secretary. I wanted you run out,
- 10:41all right, all right, I didn't know who you were, mister dollar,
- 10:43but whether you're a misinterpreting thing, no kidding, and well way,
- 10:46I was late for an appointment. I didn't want to get tied up.
- 10:50I figured you could find out anything you wanted to know from my aunt.
- 10:52I saw no necessity for talking to you. I see, where have you
- 10:56been since then? Right here most of the time and the rest of the
- 11:00time. What difference does it make? You went over at normal Wells apartment
- 11:03by any chance. Are you kidding? I'd test that girl? Why so?
- 11:09Because she's a smug, self satisfied little phony. She's too big for
- 11:13a breeches. What makes you think i'd be hanging around her? Somebody was?
- 11:18I don't get Somebody broke into her apartment this afternoon or this evening and
- 11:22turned it upside down. She hasn't got anything I want. They didn't take
- 11:26anything. They broke in to leave something. I found some ground glass planted
- 11:30in her sugar bowl glass sound familar? What are you getting at? You
- 11:35mean you haven't heard about the coroner's report on Jonathan Wells? No, why
- 11:41what has that got to do? Wells died from a dose of ground glass?
- 11:52I mean he was killed murder. I don't imagine he ate this stuff
- 11:54intentionally? Do you? I can't believe the police aren't having that. I
- 12:00just can't imagine anybody such a nice guy. He always got along fine with
- 12:05everybody, including you. Yes, we've got to be good friend. What
- 12:11about his daughter Nova? I don't really know. She we're top and moved
- 12:16out a month after Aunt Mabel and Jonathan were married. Why jealous? I
- 12:20guess she couldn't stand it to see her father paying attention to anybody but her.
- 12:22Did they quarrel much? Jonathan never quarreled with anybody. No, she
- 12:28just seemed to go around with a mad on most of the time. She's
- 12:33a rare one, that girl. What do you mean, Oh, she
- 12:35seems to think of herself as a princess or something. I understand you made
- 12:39quite a play for at first. I suppose she told you that, did
- 12:43you. I tried to be friendly to her, that's all. I don't
- 12:46know what she chose to call it to, Doll. I'm engaged to miss
- 12:50Tipler, the girl that works here in the office. What do you do
- 12:54for a living? Mister Creedley, take care of this correspondence club. Frand
- 12:58Mabel got sort of a hard condition. I can't work to her. I
- 13:03see, you know, it might be a good idea if you checked in
- 13:07with the police. They'll probably want to talk to you or who do they
- 13:09think did it? Well, they haven't arrested anybody yet, but there are
- 13:13a lot of straws pointing in one direction. What direction, George or Aunt
- 13:16Mabel? I'm afraid but that's ridiculous. She may be a little vague,
- 13:22not quite all with it, maybe, but She wouldn't do a thing like
- 13:24that. They're out the framer, that's what they're doing. Well, sent
- 13:28a motive, mister Creeley. But what about his daughter? She stands to
- 13:31gain by all this, she inherits the estate. Maybe she faked that burglary
- 13:35planted the ground glass in her apartment herself. Have you thought of that,
- 13:39mister Dollar, Yeah, yeah, I thought of it. Now here's our
- 14:00star to tell you about tomorrow's intriguing episode of this week's story. Tomorrow,
- 14:05another murder comes to light, another link in a long chain, and an
- 14:09old lady weeps for the wasted years. Join us, want you Yours Truly,
- 14:15Johnny Dollar. Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed
- 14:39in Hollywood, written by Less Crutchfield. It is produced and directed by Jack
- 14:43Johnstone. Be sure to join us tomorrow night at the same time in station
- 14:48for the next exciting episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Roy Rowan speaking welcome
- 16:37back, Well, I'm part four of the series. Johnny. I learned
- 16:41a key fact from Dave, and namely that was that Mabel's first husband,
- 16:49Walter, left her fifty thousand dollars insurance policy and Johnny gets curious if there
- 16:59might have been other husbands. Shares this information with Max from the District Attorney
- 17:03office before going up to talk to Mabel, and apparently she had a somewhat
- 17:08rambling conversation and then Johnny tells her about the ground glass, which was responsible
- 17:15for her latest husband's death. She says this ridiculous that he would have known
- 17:21it, and then goes into something about death being in the stars. Well,
- 17:25this is going on. Johnny gets a call from Max who says that
- 17:30they have found out that Walter Burke died of consuming ground glass. So first
- 17:37husband died of this as well. So when Johnny hangs up, Mabel collapses
- 17:45in pain. So that's where we're at. Widow two husbands who died exact
- 17:52same causes, collected exact same insurance payout. Then she collapses. At the
- 17:57end of part four, and what happens we'll find out. It's time now
- 18:03to go back to yours truly, Johnny Dollar and the Lonely Hearts Matter,
- 18:07Part five from Hollywood. It's time now, poor Johnny Dollar, Max Lancer
- 18:17Johnny in his office, how is she pretty weak? The hospital staff are
- 18:22doing all they can for her. But they don't give her much hope.
- 18:23Has she been able to talk, No, not yet, maybe not ever.
- 18:26It was ground glass, all right, the doctor sure of it.
- 18:30Now seem as her husband. Why, Johnny, Why, I'll guess with
- 18:34you. Maybe she figured we were closing you on her, the game was
- 18:37over, and took this way out. We had nothing on her, max
- 18:41suspicion. That's all we were going on. She'd had two husbands in the
- 18:45last three years, both of them died from the effects of ground glass poisoning,
- 18:49and both times she goes for fifty thousand dollars insurance. That's all we
- 18:53had to go on, and it wasn't enough. But maybe she didn't realize
- 18:56that. I can give you a better theory. Okay, somebody trying to
- 19:00murder her tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of

- 19:52which I had sent up from a lunch room across the street from the
- 19:55hospital. It was evening again now I'd spent the whole day in the line
- 20:00down the hall from the room where Mabel Burke Wells was fighting for her life,
- 20:03fighting and slowly losing. I tagged her as a murderess, responsible for
- 20:08the deaths of two of her husbands, But then she herself had been struck
- 20:12down by the same poison, and now only she had the key to the
- 20:15puzzle, the key she might never give up. Doctor. Oh, hi,
- 20:26creating any change it my hand's condition. No, No, I just
- 20:30talked to the doctor. If anything, she's even weaker. She didn't even
- 20:33recognize me. I've been in the room off and on all day. She
- 20:37didn't even know I was there. Wow, she's in pretty bad shape.
- 20:40Sit down, you're like a little rocky yourself. I feel it. And
- 20:47Maybel's been a real mother to me. It's just quite a shock. Yes,
- 20:49I mentioned, doctor says it's the same thing that killed Jonathan. Yes,
- 20:55that's right. Well that doesn't make any sense, mister Dallas. They
- 20:57tell me something, did any one't come to the house to see your aunt,
- 21:02either last night after Lancey left or this morning before I got there.
- 21:06As far as I know, why do you think someone might have I don't
- 21:10know. She'd already gone to bed and I came in loudly this morning.
- 21:14It's possible, of course, but I don't believe anyone did. She never
- 21:18had any visitors. She's always been a lonely person. Actually, maybe that's
- 21:22why she started the Lonely Hearts Club. Yes it was. I suggested the
- 21:26idea to her as a loved it. Why couldn't she and Jonathan's daughter,
- 21:32Norma Wells get along. She's a strange girl. I spoke to Jonathan about
- 21:37it once, but he just laughed it off, said Norman just had too
- 21:41much possessive. The two of them have been alone until he married your aunt.
- 21:47Mister Dollar. Yeah, well, the police think that aunt maybe killed
- 21:51him, don't they. They've got some pretty strong reasons for thinking so,
- 21:53and the way she is now dying, and I suppose they think she did
- 21:59it herself. It's possible she did. Is that what you think? Oh?
- 22:04I'm not sure. I am. Oh, come on over as well.
- 22:08I didn't want to interrupt, just making conversation. You two know each
- 22:14other. I guess, yes, Well, I got a cup of coffee.
- 22:19I'll see you later. I can't stand that man, So I gather,
- 22:25how is she not much change ary? Just sitting in that hotel room
- 22:29wondering what was happening. She hasn't been able to talk. No, not
- 22:33sure. I don't understand it. My father died less than two hours after
- 22:37he was first stricken. Difference in constitution, maybe different, though unclested.
- 22:42That's the way I feel. I can't help it when I think of my
- 22:47father, so kind and gentle, murdered in cold blood by that. If
- 22:52she did do it, then why this? You mean the same thing happening
- 22:56to her? That's right the most Maybe if she's capable of it or fear,
- 23:02I don't know why. Maybe she's insane. I always thought she might
- 23:07be. Oh, she's sane, all right, as sane as any of
- 23:08us. And what do you think happened to her? Oh? I don't
- 23:14know. You probably never will know. She'll die without talking, and there
- 23:18will never be any proof. That's a possibility that worthless nephew of hers will
- 23:22collect the insurance. I suppose that's not my department but under the circumstances,
- 23:27I think he'd have a legal claim. It's horrible to dalla. What is
- 23:32a nurse? She's conscious and she wants to see you. She was a
- 23:38dying woman I could see at the moment Noma Wells and I walked into the
- 23:42room. I sent the nurse to find her nephew, Burton Creeley, and
- 23:45he slipped in quietly. A few seconds later. The old lady lay back
- 23:49on her pillows, smiling to herself as usual, bright eyed with a last
- 23:53burst of false vitality. Death was only minutes away. All of us knew
- 23:59it, and you know it too, My gracious. All of you looks
- 24:06so serious, but it was nice of you to come. Keeps a body
- 24:11from feeling notes. You see your strengthen, m missus Wells, what on
- 24:15earth for body can enjoy the last few breaths? You might as well not
- 24:22be living. Please you please meet Burton Creeley straightening your tie. You look
- 24:30afright, my, it's certainly nice to see you here. Norman well I
- 24:37always said to Jonathan, it's just a crying shame that Norman and he can't
- 24:42hit it off better. He just laughing. Missus wall be quiet, young
- 24:48man. Now what you're after all due time? It's a matter of fact.
- 24:56That's why I wanted to see you. I've been in my senses for
- 25:00the last hour, but I just didn't let on. I wanted a chance
- 25:06to think I'm about to die. You know, maybe don't talk that death
- 25:14is only the doorway to a more glorious life. And remember that, mister
- 25:21Dawler, I didn't do it. I know. I finally came to that
- 25:26conclusion myself too late. You mean you're not surprised. No, well,
- 25:33at least it's a help that I don't have to convince you. I'm afraid
- 25:37I won't have that much time. What are you saying? You heard me,
- 25:41Noma? I said I didn't kill Jonathan. Why I was much too
- 25:48fond of him to do a thing like that. Who did kill him?
- 25:52Missus Wells? That's what I was puzzling over for the last hour. Then
- 26:00when I figured it out, I had to decide whether to let sleeping dogs
- 26:04lie. I see that justice took its costs, and but I remembered how
- 26:17kind Johnath had it been decided. And Mabel, don't try to talk any
- 26:22more. Those chocolatespect that you gave me this morning. How that was an
- 26:32awful naughty thing to do with Burton and now you have to be punished for
- 26:37it. Wait a minute, missus Wilson, Jonathan Walter too, and they
- 26:44were always so nice to you. I just can't understand why you did it.
- 26:49Mister Dolla. Yes, you take Burton in hand, give him,
- 26:57give him a good talking to, explained to him. Miss Wells is she
- 27:15yeah, Well get your hands up, Dollah. One move from you and
- 27:22Normah gets a pull up right in the back. I remember one thing,
- 27:30Dolla. I'm taking this high and mighty here along if they get me,
- 27:33then she goes to The door was solid built to west. It took me
- 27:41several minutes to smash it open me. The nurse in the court had said,
- 27:45creately and normal Wells had gone down in the elevator. I grabbed the
- 27:48floor phone and called the main desk in the lobby. They said some man
- 27:51and the girl had just stolen an ambulance from the emergency driveway and headed west
- 27:53onto the Lake Shore Parkway. And at that moment Max Lancers stepped off the
- 27:57elevator. Show me what's going on? Back you come, Max, Come
- 28:00on, we could hear the ambulance siren for a while somewhere up ahead of
- 28:04us. Then we lost it. Max kept the red light flashing and the
- 28:07accelerator on the floorboard. This phenomena needle edge passed eighty five, touch ninety
- 28:11and hung. There. We were nine miles park cars, the crowd gathering
- 28:15in the air, and he was rolled over against the bank where Robbie,
- 28:22I'm the crew, got out of it. They ran in the brush.
- 28:25There he's hearing the goat. Take these high, Johnny, aug around the
- 28:27other eight right, Max, and watch yourself. The undergrowth was heavy.
- 28:32A mass of dark shadows slashed here and there by beams of light from the
- 28:36headlamps of the cars on the road above. Max disappeared into the night and
- 28:38I moved on along. Minutes passed. Then a car light shifted slightly and
- 28:44I saw them only a few yards away. Crouched against the tree. He
- 28:47was holding the gun pressed against the side. Hold it down. Your finished,
- 28:51Creely, you better give up. You know what I told you.
- 28:55Why go, she goes Johnny, he's going to kill me. I was
- 28:57holding my gun at my side, but I didn't dare lifted. Try to
- 29:00waigm it one false move on my partner pulled the trigger blast of life on
- 29:03an Oma Wells. Then she struggled slightly, tried to pull away from him.
- 29:07I had a one second chance, and I took it. Are you
- 29:17all right? Yes? Is I'm all right? I didn't have time to
- 29:21call a shot. I had to get it off fast. Yeah. Looks
- 29:26like it caught him in the heart. Expense account had him sixteen two hundred
- 29:38and thirty one dollars and twenty five cents. Hotel on Incidentals in Chicago and
- 29:41transportation back to Heart forrider. Expense account total four hundred and sixteen dollars and
- 29:47forty cents. End of account and of report remarks, a heart with a
- 29:52bullet hole in it. There's a real lonely heart. Yours truly, Johnny
- 29:59Dollar. Now here's our star to tell you about next week's intriguing story.
- 30:15Next week the callicles matter, which is just another way of saying the Greeks
- 30:19had a word for it. Join us, won't you? Yours truly,
- 30:25Johnny Dollar? Yours truly, Johnny Dollar, starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed
- 30:47in Hollywood, written by Les Crutchfield, It is produced and directed by Jack
- 30:51Johnstone. Heard in this week's cast were Lucille Meredith, Mary Jane Croft,
- 30:56Virginia Gregg, Hervella's, Howard mcneer, and Stacy Harris. Musical supervision by
- 31:02Amerigo Marino. Be sure to join us on Monday night, same time and
- 31:07station for another exciting story of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, Roy Rowan speaking
- 32:07welcome back. A nice hard boiled closing line for Johnny in this case.
- 32:15The Solid story by Les Crutchfield gives us a really solid looking cast of suspects
- 32:22here. I think that it wouldn't have really surprised me had any of them
- 32:28done it. The daughter, the nephew, wore the wife. It all
- 32:31seemed pretty plausible. Plus, I think Johnny Doller is pretty clever and keeping
- 32:37the audience on their toes. A couple of weeks back, of course,
- 32:42in the Laired Douglas Douglas story, they basically worked to trick us into not
- 32:52noticing that the old lady was the murderer, and in this one they worked
- 33:00hard on pointing out so many clues to show us that she was the murderer
- 33:07when she wasn't. So an interesting case and an interesting outcome, I'll be
- 33:14glad that we actually have only one more of these lost episodes series, and
- 33:21that lost episode is going to be a Part two and it'll be several months
- 33:24from now. Doctor Tim will return next Friday, and then once that's finished,
- 33:32we'll finish up the Carter Brown mysteries. All right, Well, that
- 33:37will do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with the lineup, and
- 33:42then on Monday join us for yours truly, Johnny Dowler. In the meantime,
