- 0:04Speaker 1: Smell us now, lady, welcome to Meet Eater Trivia Podcast.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Oh that's not the right view. Oh we're off to
- 0:29Speaker 2: a great start. Oh no, there he is.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Oh there, I am welcome to Meet Eater Radio Live.
- 0:35Speaker 3: It's eleven am Mountain Time on Thursday, December fifth, and
- 0:39Speaker 3: we are live from Meat Eater HQ and Bozeman, Montana.
- 0:42Speaker 3: I'm your host Randa Williams, and I'm joined today by
- 0:46Speaker 3: Brody Henderson. On today's show, we're interviewing a researcher studying
- 0:51Speaker 3: bluefin tuna and Marlon got those backwards in the script here.
- 0:56Speaker 3: We've got a few regrettable tattoos to share with you.
- 0:58Speaker 3: We've got another hot tip off. We're going to play
- 1:01Speaker 3: a bit of phil trivia. We're gonna have a strange
- 1:04Speaker 3: bear hunting fool from Arkansas in the studio. And at
- 1:07Speaker 3: the very end, I have a very special announcement that
- 1:10Speaker 3: you'll be hearing first here exclusively on Meat Eater Radio Live. Brody,
- 1:16Speaker 3: how are you today, sir?
- 1:17Speaker 4: Excellent? It's only two of us in here today. It's
- 1:19Speaker 4: a little weird. We should have got a cut out
- 1:21Speaker 4: of Steve and he could be here and then, but
- 1:23Speaker 4: people could have Steve here and he wouldn't interrupt anyone.
- 1:27Speaker 3: I think we could have a cutout of Steve for
- 1:29Speaker 3: most office activities.
- 1:32Speaker 5: He's just a busy guy.
- 1:34Speaker 3: He could use a body double yep, or at least
- 1:36Speaker 3: just a stand in cardboard cutout. Yeah, we just wrapped
- 1:40Speaker 3: up our general season here and I was not fortunate
- 1:45Speaker 3: enough to get an ELK, to my great disappointment, and
- 1:49Speaker 3: it'll be another long ten months before we can give
- 1:52Speaker 3: it another shot. But I understand you had a pretty
- 1:55Speaker 3: special hunt recently.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Yeah, my son drew a pretty sweet cow tag. It's
- 2:02Speaker 4: a youth only cow tag. After it's like November seventeenth,
- 2:07Speaker 4: that unit goes from general tag to youth only for
- 2:12Speaker 4: cow no bull hunting. So it was a good draw.
- 2:16Speaker 4: And I had lined up some private access on a
- 2:21Speaker 4: ranch in that unit, which would have been like kind
- 2:25Speaker 4: of a slam dunk gimme. So I thought my kid'd
- 2:29Speaker 4: be all excited about that, right, And like in the
- 2:32Speaker 4: days leading up to it, he just didn't seem too
- 2:35Speaker 4: jazzed about it, and I was like, what's.
- 2:36Speaker 6: Going on, man?
- 2:38Speaker 4: He's like, Man, I don't want my first ELK to
- 2:40Speaker 4: be like jumping out of a truck and shoot one
- 2:43Speaker 4: in a hayfield, and I get it, like it's nice
- 2:46Speaker 4: to have an easy hunt now and then, but he
- 2:47Speaker 4: just didn't want that to be his first elk. So
- 2:50Speaker 4: I was like, all right, dude, let's go climb a mountain,
- 2:53Speaker 4: because that's what else.
- 2:54Speaker 5: Yeah, let's go get kicked in the teeth.
- 2:57Speaker 4: And we drove over to that unit. We didn't like
- 2:59Speaker 4: do the early morning thing. It's kind of a drive,
- 3:03Speaker 4: and so we got over there like I don't know,
- 3:06Speaker 4: ten o'clock and drove into this big chunk of public
- 3:09Speaker 4: and I just started glassing for bedded herds, you know,
- 3:14Speaker 4: and right away we find a heard a like thirty
- 3:16Speaker 4: and it's like totally doable, but a lot of up
- 3:19Speaker 4: and down, a lot of up the mountain, down the
- 3:21Speaker 4: mountain to get to them. It was very windy and
- 3:25Speaker 4: cold that day, so I was like, let's keep them
- 3:27Speaker 4: in our hip pocket. They're not you know, once a
- 3:29Speaker 4: herds bedded down, they're not going anywhere unless someone else
- 3:33Speaker 4: spooks them. We kept driving into this public and went
- 3:38Speaker 4: another mile mile and a half down the road and
- 3:41Speaker 4: threw the binos up and there's this long bench below
- 3:46Speaker 4: the top of the timbered ridge and there's one hundred
- 3:48Speaker 4: and fifty elk that's laying down on that thing, a
- 3:51Speaker 4: lot of eyeballs, and it was steep to get up
- 3:54Speaker 4: to them, but like basically once you got out of
- 3:58Speaker 4: the truck and in a little ways you were below
- 4:01Speaker 4: their line of sight. So it was gonna be one
- 4:03Speaker 4: of those things where you climb right up, get to
- 4:06Speaker 4: the lip, and the herd's going to be right that
- 4:08Speaker 4: you're going to be in range, you know. So it
- 4:09Speaker 4: was a good it was a better deal than the
- 4:13Speaker 4: first herd, but a lot of eyes, like you said,
- 4:18Speaker 4: and man, the wind was just howling that day, which
- 4:20Speaker 4: I think ended up working in our favor because they
- 4:23Speaker 4: weren't going to hear us, they weren't gonna smell us.
- 4:26Speaker 4: So we made the climb, which is like first third
- 4:30Speaker 4: of it is pretty mild, and then it's just straight
- 4:33Speaker 4: up a thousand feet and we get to where I'm
- 4:36Speaker 4: expecting to like be able to see them, but it's
- 4:38Speaker 4: one of those like it wasn't like you stick your
- 4:42Speaker 4: head up and you're there. It's just one of those
- 4:43Speaker 4: slow rolling things where you got to like belly crawl
- 4:47Speaker 4: ten feet. Can't see him yet, belly crawl ten feet
- 4:50Speaker 4: can't see him. And we did that for like at
- 4:53Speaker 4: least fifty yards, and we could hear cows and calves
- 4:56Speaker 4: like just chirping and talking to each other, like very close.
- 5:00Speaker 4: So I'm like, we're going to end up right on
- 5:02Speaker 4: top of these things. And we screw it up. And
- 5:06Speaker 4: we got to this one rock and We're laying down
- 5:10Speaker 4: and I can see a lone cow beded up in
- 5:12Speaker 4: the timber, and I'm like, man, it's like two fifty
- 5:17Speaker 4: the wind's blown, but the wind was in our face,
- 5:19Speaker 4: so I wasn't worried about wind drift too much. And
- 5:23Speaker 4: I'm like whispering to Hayden, you want to sha try
- 5:26Speaker 4: and shoot that one? Do you want to try and
- 5:27Speaker 4: get closer to this herd? And we ended up we
- 5:31Speaker 4: opted to like just get him on the bipod, get steady,
- 5:34Speaker 4: and that cow was just betted in the perfect at
- 5:38Speaker 4: the perfect angle slide uphill broadside.
- 5:42Speaker 6: Like a good like.
- 5:43Speaker 4: I don't shoot a lot of betted animals, but this
- 5:46Speaker 4: was a good opportunity to shoot her in the shoulder,
- 5:48Speaker 4: and he got comfortable and took the shot, and she
- 5:54Speaker 4: rolled over in her bed, slid down the hill ten
- 5:56Speaker 4: yards in the snow and was dead like it was perfect.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Never knew knew we were there, but that you know,
- 6:03Speaker 4: you've killed plenty out. That's just like the start of it, right,
- 6:07Speaker 4: My kids, like, holy crap, these things. He's thirteen, Yeah.
- 6:15Speaker 6: He was.
- 6:15Speaker 4: He was shocked, but it was a big old cow
- 6:18Speaker 4: and he was shocked by the size of this thing.
- 6:20Speaker 4: And it was setting in like how are we going
- 6:22Speaker 4: to deal with this? Because by this point, it's like
- 6:24Speaker 4: he shot her at one thirty, so like you know,
- 6:28Speaker 4: it gets dark at like four thirty now, so we
- 6:32Speaker 4: had a limited amount of time, and so I'm trying
- 6:35Speaker 4: to figure out what we're gonna do, like like how
- 6:38Speaker 4: we're going to get because we're in grizzly country, like
- 6:40Speaker 4: heavy duty grizzly country, and that the bears that are
- 6:43Speaker 4: out this time year are the ones that are looking
- 6:45Speaker 4: for elk carcasses. So I'm a little freaked out, not bad,
- 6:50Speaker 4: but it's like definitely in the back of my mind.
- 6:54Speaker 4: And I'm looking down that slope and I'm like, man,
- 6:56Speaker 4: I bet you we could gut her and just slide
- 6:59Speaker 4: her down the mountain. Oh yeah, which is like if
- 7:04Speaker 4: it works, great, but you could also just mangle that cow.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Yeah, and just you can put yourself in a bad
- 7:10Speaker 3: spot where all of a sudden you're trying to cord
- 7:12Speaker 3: her up a cow on something you can't really yeah,
- 7:15Speaker 3: stand up straight.
- 7:16Speaker 4: But in the end I decided to give it a go.
- 7:20Speaker 4: And there wasn't a lot of snow on that was
- 7:23Speaker 4: a west facing slope, so the snow was kind of
- 7:26Speaker 4: patchy and melted off. There's only like an inch or
- 7:29Speaker 4: two a coverage the whole way down that steep slope.
- 7:32Speaker 4: So it actually worked very well. Like she'd slide like
- 7:36Speaker 4: fifty yards and then slow down and stop, and we
- 7:39Speaker 4: just did that the whole way down.
- 7:40Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Then we got her to that bench and above the
- 7:46Speaker 4: truck another half mile like gradual slope down to the truck.
- 7:51Speaker 4: So we went back to the truck, got the sled,
- 7:54Speaker 4: quartered her, and got her out with the sled the
- 7:57Speaker 4: rest of the way. So it was great, Like he
- 8:01Speaker 4: learned a lot about elk hunting, you know.
- 8:03Speaker 6: It was very great hunt.
- 8:06Speaker 4: And the cool thing about like people that have been
- 8:10Speaker 4: hunting a long time and killed a bunch of animals,
- 8:15Speaker 4: like you're never getting that first, right, Like I got
- 8:18Speaker 4: my first moose this fall, which was like an incredible
- 8:22Speaker 4: feeling and experience, but like, you get to relive a
- 8:25Speaker 4: lot of first when you take a kid hunting, and
- 8:29Speaker 4: that was that was the coolest thing about it.
- 8:31Speaker 6: He's a little tuckered there at the end.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Yeah, well that's that's about how I feel, Yeah, packing
- 8:36Speaker 3: out elk.
- 8:37Speaker 5: Yes, it's funny.
- 8:38Speaker 3: My when my wife started hunting a couple of years ago,
- 8:42Speaker 3: she she wanted to get a deer, and we probably
- 8:48Speaker 3: went out five or six times before she pulled the
- 8:50Speaker 3: trigger yep, and it was like that was perfect.
- 8:54Speaker 6: Yeah, she hunted, yeah, exactly.
- 8:55Speaker 3: And and and then this year we went out and
- 8:58Speaker 3: she shot one probably ten minutes after we got to
- 9:01Speaker 3: the spot, and she was like so tickled with that.
- 9:04Speaker 3: But it was also she'd killed enough deer that it
- 9:08Speaker 3: like that wouldn't have been a good first year, right, right,
- 9:11Speaker 3: So yeah, it's it's funny how your perspective changes in
- 9:15Speaker 3: those things.
- 9:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not dogging like private land hunting or whatever,
- 9:19Speaker 4: but you know, it would have just been a very
- 9:21Speaker 4: different And he'll remember that one for the rest of.
- 9:25Speaker 5: His life totally.
- 9:26Speaker 3: And also, you know, next time he goes out for
- 9:28Speaker 3: an ELK, he has some appreciations exactly shooting one in.
- 9:31Speaker 5: A bad, bad spot.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Yep, well, thanks for sharing that. Joining us on the
- 9:38Speaker 3: line first is Chloe Michaels from Monterey, California at Stanford
- 9:43Speaker 3: University's Hopkins Marine Station. Chloe is a PhD student in
- 9:47Speaker 3: biology studying bluefin tune in Marlon. Chloe, Welcome to the show.
- 9:53Speaker 7: Thank you so much for having me. It is great
- 9:55Speaker 7: to be here. I'm pretty jealous of that elk story
- 9:58Speaker 7: in California. It's really difficult to.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Draw those bags.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Oh sure, I see you got a nail out there
- 10:03Speaker 4: behind you though.
- 10:05Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 10:06Speaker 7: Yeah, that was from New Mexico a year ago. I
- 10:11Speaker 7: claimed that one. Yeah, that was my fiance shot that one. Unfortunately,
- 10:14Speaker 7: I'll be next for our next trip.
- 10:16Speaker 5: Cool.
- 10:17Speaker 7: Very Yeah, it was a fun trip.
- 10:19Speaker 3: So, Chloe, your work involves tracking some of the world's
- 10:22Speaker 3: largest and most highly migratory species of fish. Can you
- 10:26Speaker 3: tell us a little bit about how you study these animals?
- 10:30Speaker 7: Yeah? So, I feel really lucky, because, I mean, the
- 10:35Speaker 7: whole reason that I decided to do this is because
- 10:37Speaker 7: I really loved fishing, and I love animals. I love
- 10:40Speaker 7: being out in the water, and I actually so I
- 10:42Speaker 7: grew up in North Carolina and spent every summer and
- 10:46Speaker 7: winter basically on the coast in North Carolina, and that's
- 10:50Speaker 7: where I just absolutely fell in love with fishing. So
- 10:54Speaker 7: the great thing about doing my PhD studying blue and
- 10:57Speaker 7: tuna and blue marlin is that my field work and
- 11:00Speaker 7: going out catching these fish, tagging them, releasing them. And
- 11:04Speaker 7: then now I'm in my fifth year and it's a
- 11:06Speaker 7: lot less of the fun field work and tagging and
- 11:08Speaker 7: more of as you know, a lot more data analysis
- 11:11Speaker 7: and writing in the last part of it. So unfortunately
- 11:14Speaker 7: not doing as much of that anymore. But the field
- 11:17Speaker 7: work is a lot of fun.
- 11:19Speaker 5: So you're catching them.
- 11:19Speaker 3: When you're catching them to tag them, I assume you're
- 11:22Speaker 3: tagging them, you're you're catching them on a rod.
- 11:25Speaker 7: And reel, yeah, exactly. So basically the methods are different
- 11:30Speaker 7: for blue marlin blue in tuna, but for blue and tuna,
- 11:34Speaker 7: well for both, we go out usually on either recreational
- 11:38Speaker 7: charter boats or commercial boats, so we're working directly with
- 11:41Speaker 7: the fishermen on this. We're not like if you just
- 11:43Speaker 7: send a bunch of sligents out there to try to
- 11:45Speaker 7: catch fish by ourselves, we would have a bit of
- 11:47Speaker 7: a hard time, sure, So we work directly with the
- 11:51Speaker 7: local fleets and in North Carolina specifically, there's a really
- 11:56Speaker 7: rich commercial fishery for blueth and tuna that actually just
- 11:59Speaker 7: open up December one, So usually this time of year
- 12:03Speaker 7: will go out and it is cold winter time conditions.
- 12:07Speaker 7: It's all round and real fishing. And you know with
- 12:10Speaker 7: blueth and tuna, the fight can sometimes be hours long.
- 12:13Speaker 7: You're trying really hard just to get a bite, so
- 12:15Speaker 7: you're using light leader. It's really difficult work. But yeah,
- 12:19Speaker 7: we end up with the bluef and we actually bring
- 12:22Speaker 7: the fish on board. And all of our work is
- 12:25Speaker 7: electronic tagging, So we're deploying tags that act almost like
- 12:30Speaker 7: a GPS tracker that you'd have on your dogs or
- 12:32Speaker 7: in your car and allowing you to actually position the
- 12:36Speaker 7: fish over time.
- 12:38Speaker 3: So beyond just like where they are, what other sorts
- 12:42Speaker 3: of data points are you getting from these tags?
- 12:47Speaker 7: Yeah, so we use a couple of different types of
- 12:49Speaker 7: tags for blue and tuna. We actually have the ability
- 12:52Speaker 7: to put tags surgically inside the fish also, so I
- 12:56Speaker 7: have a couple of different ones that I brought to
- 12:58Speaker 7: show you perfect So this for the YouTube audience, you
- 13:02Speaker 7: can see This is called an internal archival tag. And
- 13:05Speaker 7: so we bring the blue and tuna up on the boat.
- 13:09Speaker 7: We actually stick a saltwater hose in its mouth irrigate
- 13:13Speaker 7: the gills. These fish are sometimes up to one thousand pounds,
- 13:16Speaker 7: so it is no small feet bringing them on board.
- 13:20Speaker 7: We irrigate their gills with the hose, and then we
- 13:23Speaker 7: actually will take a couple of measurements, get some thin clips,
- 13:26Speaker 7: and we surgically implant this tag in their belly, like
- 13:29Speaker 7: in their abdomen. And so this tag has on the
- 13:32Speaker 7: end a light stock. So the way that we get
- 13:34Speaker 7: the position is from like light level geolocation. So it's
- 13:38Speaker 7: actually like all of this complex math figuring out what
- 13:42Speaker 7: time of day it is based off of the day length.
- 13:45Speaker 7: And then we also get depth from a pressure sensor
- 13:48Speaker 7: on this and then from this internal tag we get
- 13:51Speaker 7: both internal body temperature and external body temp. And what's
- 13:55Speaker 7: really cool about the internal temperature is that you can
- 13:58Speaker 7: actually see what the fishes do. So you know, when
- 14:01Speaker 7: we release this fish, the chances of getting this back
- 14:04Speaker 7: are really slim. The fish has to be recaptured, so
- 14:09Speaker 7: we deploy these tags. You know, it's like sending a
- 14:11Speaker 7: message in the bottle, You hope you get it back.
- 14:15Speaker 7: But when we do get them back, we can tell
- 14:16Speaker 7: where the fish is going, where it's diving, the temperature
- 14:19Speaker 7: that it's diving to, and then also the internal temperature.
- 14:23Speaker 7: So with bluefin, you can see them heating up inside
- 14:26Speaker 7: when they're having a meal, or heating up when they're spawning.
- 14:30Speaker 7: Lots of really interesting stuff like that.
- 14:32Speaker 3: So when you get them back, is that from like
- 14:34Speaker 3: recreational or commercial anglers giving you a call and saying
- 14:37Speaker 3: I pulled one of your tags off of fish exactly.
- 14:41Speaker 7: Yeah. So a lot of our fish, especially the ones
- 14:45Speaker 7: that we tag off the coast of North Carolina, end
- 14:47Speaker 7: up getting recaptured in the Mediterranean Sea.
- 14:49Speaker 6: Wow.
- 14:51Speaker 7: Yeah, So they're traveling across the entire ocean and then
- 14:54Speaker 7: they mostly get caught in like the trap fisheries there. Yeah,
- 14:58Speaker 7: but we do occasionally get some up and down the
- 15:00Speaker 7: East coast, which is fun because it's close to home too.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Sure, how is that like the furthest that these fish
- 15:06Speaker 3: are traveling, I mean, do you have a I know,
- 15:10Speaker 3: at least in the case of like mule deer, especially antelope,
- 15:13Speaker 3: there are these outlier right where you know they'll find
- 15:16Speaker 3: a mule deer dough that's traveled several hundred miles. Do
- 15:20Speaker 3: you have like a particularly memorable example of a fish
- 15:24Speaker 3: just going way out there?
- 15:27Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, the cool thing about bluefin tuna is
- 15:29Speaker 7: that they are highly migratory, so just by nature, they're
- 15:32Speaker 7: not residential. They're not staying in one spot. So the
- 15:35Speaker 7: fish that we see like this time of year in
- 15:37Speaker 7: the North Carolina fishery are you know, have already traveled
- 15:40Speaker 7: up and down the East coast, maybe come from Nova Scotia,
- 15:43Speaker 7: and then this is basically just like a little stop
- 15:46Speaker 7: on their way somewhere. So a lot of our fish
- 15:50Speaker 7: they're either spawning in one of two areas. One is
- 15:53Speaker 7: the Gulf of Mexico and then one's the Mediterranean Sea.
- 15:56Speaker 7: So that's why we end up getting a lot of
- 15:58Speaker 7: the fish from North Carolina in the meat. And what's
- 16:02Speaker 7: pretty amazing about these internal archival tags. Granted they're a
- 16:06Speaker 7: lot harder to get back because they're inside of the fish,
- 16:11Speaker 7: but oh, I should mention the other type of tag
- 16:12Speaker 7: that we have is a satellite tag that actually pops
- 16:16Speaker 7: off of the animal, so it has a float attached
- 16:19Speaker 7: to it. It's the same thing with a float and
- 16:21Speaker 7: then it pops off of the animal and transmits all
- 16:24Speaker 7: the data to satellites so that you don't have to
- 16:26Speaker 7: get back. But we have a lot of really cool stories.
- 16:31Speaker 7: These archival tags can stay in fish for multiple years,
- 16:35Speaker 7: which allows us to see them, like really see them
- 16:38Speaker 7: grow up and see how their behavior changes.
- 16:40Speaker 5: Yeah, how old are those fish getting?
- 16:43Speaker 8: Oh?
- 16:44Speaker 7: Man, So the ones that we're tagging in North Carolina,
- 16:47Speaker 7: they're probably arranging anywhere from like five to ten and
- 16:52Speaker 7: we suspect that they're like max age limit is around forty,
- 16:55Speaker 7: but we really don't know unless it's recaptured. So you
- 17:01Speaker 7: can tell how you can age the fish. Once they're recaptured.
- 17:04Speaker 7: You can get an estimate based off of length. But
- 17:07Speaker 7: they do like once they were a certain size, there's
- 17:10Speaker 7: only they can only get so big.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Sure, Hey, Chloe, these bluepen they're getting hit by commercial
- 17:17Speaker 4: fishermen like up and down the East Coast and over Yeah,
- 17:20Speaker 4: in Europe because there's a huge market for them in
- 17:24Speaker 4: Japan obviously, Right, How like how is is their population doing?
- 17:30Speaker 4: Because I know it seemed like a few years ago,
- 17:32Speaker 4: maybe maybe a little more than that, it was kind
- 17:36Speaker 4: of like you're hearing a lot that they weren't doing
- 17:39Speaker 4: that great.
- 17:40Speaker 6: Are they doing better now?
- 17:43Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 17:43Speaker 7: They are. So I feel like when I first kind
- 17:46Speaker 7: of came into this space and I didn't know much
- 17:47Speaker 7: about blue and tuna, all I knew was like, oh,
- 17:50Speaker 7: they're this endangered fish, and but then I saw like, oh,
- 17:53Speaker 7: there are a bunch of people in my hometown catching them.
- 17:56Speaker 7: So they were really heavily overfished, like between the seven
- 18:00Speaker 7: and into the nineties. But that was because we really,
- 18:04Speaker 7: like we didn't know much about them. We had no
- 18:05Speaker 7: idea how many they were, there were, where they were going,
- 18:08Speaker 7: their highly migratory nature. Just the data that we had
- 18:12Speaker 7: on them was so little, so limited. So over time
- 18:17Speaker 7: we learn more and more about them, and because of
- 18:19Speaker 7: better management practices being put into place and really international cooperation,
- 18:24Speaker 7: their populations have rebounded a ton. And in two thousand
- 18:28Speaker 7: and nine they were almost listed on like the site's
- 18:32Speaker 7: treaty is preventing international trade of them, but thankfully they
- 18:36Speaker 7: weren't because of promise to do better with management. So
- 18:41Speaker 7: what's great is because of all this international cooperation and management,
- 18:45Speaker 7: they've rebounded a lot. And I think people are seeing
- 18:47Speaker 7: that in their backyards, like people going out to fish
- 18:50Speaker 7: are just seeing a lot more bluefin than there used
- 18:52Speaker 7: to be, which is really encouraging. But it is difficult
- 18:55Speaker 7: because you know, it takes a long time to see
- 18:59Speaker 7: the changes of those management measures to actually take effect.
- 19:02Speaker 7: So these fish don't start reproducing until they're eight to
- 19:06Speaker 7: ten years old, so there's quite a bit of a delay.
- 19:10Speaker 7: You know, you put something into place and you don't
- 19:12Speaker 7: see an effect for maybe ten years, which is frustrating
- 19:15Speaker 7: for sure.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Yeah, well it's very cool that you I assume your
- 19:18Speaker 3: research will then someday inform continued improvement in the management practices.
- 19:26Speaker 7: Yeah, that's the goal. That's why I'm doing the PhD.
- 19:29Speaker 7: So yeah, it's a lot of fun. I mean, what's
- 19:32Speaker 7: great about what's cool about my work is I've been
- 19:34Speaker 7: able to incorporate our electronic tagging data with population geno
- 19:38Speaker 7: mix and I know you guys have had a lot
- 19:40Speaker 7: of people on the show that have talked about population
- 19:42Speaker 7: genetics of wolves and mule deer and everything and ducks.
- 19:47Speaker 7: So it's great that you know, the general public is
- 19:49Speaker 7: getting a great understanding of how that is important for
- 19:52Speaker 7: management as well.
- 19:54Speaker 5: Very cool.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Well, good luck out there on the water, and appreciate
- 20:00Speaker 3: you joining us. I think you've sort of hacked the
- 20:04Speaker 3: system here to pursue a PhD that just gets you
- 20:07Speaker 3: out on fishing boats for your field work. So, uh,
- 20:11Speaker 3: kudos to you on that and good luck with your
- 20:15Speaker 3: all of your data analysis. I'm sure you've got a
- 20:17Speaker 3: pilot work out of you.
- 20:20Speaker 7: Yeah, thank you so much, and we'll keep you posting
- 20:22Speaker 7: on what we have coming up on the water.
- 20:25Speaker 3: We'd love to talk to you again.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Thank you so much for having me.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Man, that's pretty wild stuff. Yep, fish in the ocean
- 20:36Speaker 3: blow my mind. I'm a simple Midwestern man, and God,
- 20:40Speaker 3: the idea of something just cruising back and forth from
- 20:43Speaker 3: North Carolina, it's a thousands. Our next segment is tattoos.
- 20:51Speaker 5: I regret.
- 20:56Speaker 4: Hello, talk this my old friend.
- 21:01Speaker 6: I've looked at my tattoo. Look again.
- 21:05Speaker 2: It really seemed like such a good idea when I
- 21:10Speaker 2: was drunk last summer in the pizza.
- 21:13Speaker 6: The tattoo says.
- 21:14Speaker 2: The person that will always find more bes. What the
- 21:21Speaker 2: does that mean?
- 21:24Speaker 1: It's a tattoo, I regret.
- 21:36Speaker 6: Just let that breathe for a little bit, keep the
- 21:38Speaker 6: hits coming.
- 21:39Speaker 5: That's beautiful, beautiful, great.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Today's first regrettable tattoo comes from Brady of Lake Villa, Illinois.
- 21:46Speaker 3: And if you have a hunting or fishing related tattoo
- 21:49Speaker 3: that you regret, please email us at radio at the
- 21:52Speaker 3: meat Eater dot com. We'd love to take a look
- 21:55Speaker 3: at that ink. Here's what Brady writes, This is a
- 22:00Speaker 3: tattoo I regret not getting sooner. So a little bit
- 22:03Speaker 3: of a twist on our program here. It always gets
- 22:07Speaker 3: a lot of laughs when I'm out fishing. The lines
- 22:09Speaker 3: are actually to scale and comes in handy when I
- 22:12Speaker 3: don't have a ruler. I work in construction and always
- 22:15Speaker 3: throw new coworkers off when I lift my pant leg
- 22:18Speaker 3: up to measure bolts and such. I can't think of
- 22:21Speaker 3: a more versatile tattoo. And for those of you listening
- 22:25Speaker 3: as opposed to our YouTube audience, we have an image
- 22:29Speaker 3: here and it is a ruler labeled fisherman's ruler that
- 22:34Speaker 3: extends from just below the kneecap down the side of
- 22:38Speaker 3: the calf to about Brady's sock line. And he's holding
- 22:42Speaker 3: up a bass next to the ruler. And I believe
- 22:46Speaker 3: what makes it a fisherman's ruler is it jumps from
- 22:49Speaker 3: about you know, six or seven inches to the mid twenties,
- 22:54Speaker 3: so you're always sure to impress any onlookers and they
- 22:59Speaker 3: can't accuse you of lying as to how you're catch
- 23:02Speaker 3: taped out. Bro to your thoughts here.
- 23:08Speaker 4: You know, I'm happy that he doesn't regret having this tattoo.
- 23:12Speaker 9: But.
- 23:13Speaker 4: I'm just not on I'm not on board with it.
- 23:16Speaker 3: Oh really, I'm not. I see, I had the opposite reaction.
- 23:21Speaker 3: I thought that, you know, we should all have tattoos
- 23:25Speaker 3: with various units of measurement. Yeah, you know our trivia
- 23:29Speaker 3: episode earlier this week. I wish it had some conversion
- 23:32Speaker 3: tables from teaspoons to tablespoons on my arm. I mean,
- 23:36Speaker 3: this seems to me to be the height of like
- 23:39Speaker 3: this is future man.
- 23:41Speaker 4: If you say so, I don't have a lot to
- 23:44Speaker 4: say about it, Like, you know, it's I would regret
- 23:48Speaker 4: getting that.
- 23:49Speaker 2: I mean especially I think that the joke of the
- 23:52Speaker 2: numbers just jumping. Oh yeah, it was probably funny in
- 23:55Speaker 2: the moment, but I think that's the thing that makes
- 23:57Speaker 2: this age poorly sure, Like joky tattoos usually, I don't know,
- 24:01Speaker 2: they don't hold up in my estimation.
- 24:03Speaker 5: Boy tough crowd today.
- 24:06Speaker 2: I mean, I think I think Brody and I are
- 24:08Speaker 2: kind of on the outside because we've got a few
- 24:09Speaker 2: that like Josh Spielmaker yeah, says he's on board. We've
- 24:13Speaker 2: got a Ryan saying it's badass. I don't know about that.
- 24:17Speaker 2: This four kids says that's a sick tattoo.
- 24:19Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you know, I I don't know. I just
- 24:23Speaker 3: love the functionality of it. Oftentimes I find, I mean
- 24:27Speaker 3: several times a week I run around my house looking
- 24:30Speaker 3: for one of the eight tape measures that I'm.
- 24:32Speaker 4: Sure, but like you've got to do a lot of
- 24:34Speaker 4: like weird math to get like an actual measurement.
- 24:38Speaker 3: Yeah, and you know, the thing that I'm also noticing
- 24:40Speaker 3: is that the inches seem to get shorter. He said
- 24:44Speaker 3: it was.
- 24:44Speaker 4: He said it was, Uh, well.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess he does use it.
- 24:47Speaker 4: Yeah, but it's like, look, man, it's fun, but how
- 24:52Speaker 4: many inches is it? Like you ain't measuring a thirty
- 24:55Speaker 4: inch fish that way.
- 24:56Speaker 3: It looks like it looks like it's a solid eleven inches, right, twelve?
- 25:00Speaker 4: And so how useful is it because like minimum size
- 25:03Speaker 4: length for a lot of fish is going to be
- 25:05Speaker 4: twelve fifteen.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Well he's in Illinois, Yeah, I guess twelve fifteen. I
- 25:09Speaker 3: was thinking I mean, he's not gonna be out there
- 25:11Speaker 3: like measuring lyn Cod checking sling.
- 25:14Speaker 4: She'll have just gone all the way up to his
- 25:15Speaker 4: groin with it.
- 25:17Speaker 5: That is a twist.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Yeah, you could run into some complications there where.
- 25:25Speaker 2: He'd also never forget his his you know, yeah, total tailor.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean this could be another Yeah tailor. I'm
- 25:32Speaker 3: thinking of all the vocations in which this would be
- 25:34Speaker 3: a little handy body mod.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Yeah, Taylor and more tailors, Yeah, some other things.
- 25:43Speaker 3: Well, Brady, I'm on board with it.
- 25:45Speaker 10: Uh.
- 25:45Speaker 3: My colleagues here might not agree with me, but uh,
- 25:49Speaker 3: I'm on board with it, and thanks for sharing. Looks
- 25:53Speaker 3: like he got a nice little spot there. We've got
- 25:56Speaker 3: another regrettable tattoo, and this one is a bit unconventional,
- 26:00Speaker 3: and that it was submitted on behalf of Will by
- 26:03Speaker 3: his friend Patrick. Ye, that's a dirty We're not sure
- 26:06Speaker 3: if Will is consenting to this public shaming, but Patrick
- 26:12Speaker 3: seemed to think that this was worthy of consideration. He
- 26:15Speaker 3: says Will got this tattoo over twenty years ago from
- 26:18Speaker 3: a guy who just got out of jail and was
- 26:20Speaker 3: wanting to get into tattooing as a profession. Somehow, he
- 26:23Speaker 3: talked Will into letting him be his first unpaid customer.
- 26:27Speaker 3: This all took place in Will's garage. It is supposed
- 26:30Speaker 3: to be the American flag. I say supposed to be
- 26:33Speaker 3: because no one actually knows how many stars there are.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Over the years, we try to count the stars and
- 26:39Speaker 3: actually come up with a different answer, somewhere between forty
- 26:42Speaker 3: eight and fifty three, but never fifty. A new revelation
- 26:47Speaker 3: to this story, told during a dove hunt in Argentina,
- 26:50Speaker 3: was that Will was able to hide this from his
- 26:52Speaker 3: wife for over two years. And for those of you
- 26:57Speaker 3: just listening to this, we have an image of a
- 27:01Speaker 3: man holding a redfish and there's a fellow shirtless crouched
- 27:05Speaker 3: down in front of him. And on that man's back,
- 27:08Speaker 3: extending between his shoulder blades is a sort of squarish
- 27:12Speaker 3: American flag. The bars the stripes don't seem to be
- 27:19Speaker 3: sort of connected.
- 27:20Speaker 5: They're sort of floating.
- 27:21Speaker 2: There are thirteen, though I did count.
- 27:23Speaker 3: There are thirteen. Okay, so we're good there, and yeah,
- 27:26Speaker 3: the stars are It looks like it looks like he
- 27:30Speaker 3: got hit with bird shot. The spacing, the spacing is
- 27:34Speaker 3: not really uniform with the stars.
- 27:36Speaker 6: Some overlap.
- 27:37Speaker 3: It looks it looks like the guy just sort of
- 27:39Speaker 3: penciled out of square and then just did his best
- 27:42Speaker 3: to fill him in.
- 27:42Speaker 4: I think you guys for being harsh on this one.
- 27:45Speaker 4: Come on, it's the American flag, Like you're.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Steve like, oh, you're not patriotic because you don't like
- 27:52Speaker 2: this shitty tattoo.
- 27:54Speaker 4: You know, he was helping out a guy who just
- 27:56Speaker 4: got out of jail, need a little money.
- 27:59Speaker 2: Okay, well when you put it that way, yeah, yeah.
- 28:01Speaker 4: And these guys that say they like somewhere between forty
- 28:05Speaker 4: eight and fifty three, like maybe they're just not good
- 28:08Speaker 4: at counting, and it is fifty.
- 28:10Speaker 3: I was gonna say it seems like he could get
- 28:12Speaker 3: to the bottom of this with the sharpie and you
- 28:14Speaker 3: just mark off the stars as you count them.
- 28:18Speaker 2: Or that'd be one one way, one method.
- 28:20Speaker 3: I just don't think this is an insurmountable barrier here.
- 28:24Speaker 3: I think that they should be able to figure out
- 28:26Speaker 3: how many stars are on there.
- 28:28Speaker 5: Listen.
- 28:29Speaker 3: I think the most curious aspect of this whole tale
- 28:33Speaker 3: is that he hid it from his wife for two years.
- 28:35Speaker 6: Yeah, that leads to a lotis several questions.
- 28:38Speaker 3: I mean, he's got a lot of freckles on his back.
- 28:41Speaker 5: Huh.
- 28:41Speaker 3: So maybe she's just sort of used to variations in
- 28:44Speaker 3: color and shading back there.
- 28:46Speaker 2: But maybe Yeah, whenever he had his shirt off, when
- 28:50Speaker 2: he would just always be facing her and kind of
- 28:52Speaker 2: rotate around her, did.
- 28:53Speaker 4: He always hold on, hold on, don't come in, don't
- 28:56Speaker 4: come in.
- 28:56Speaker 3: Did he always have like a really dramatic exit out
- 28:59Speaker 3: of the room he walked backwards.
- 29:01Speaker 2: And he turned it out to do a thing like
- 29:02Speaker 2: a part of his personality. Maybe he did some finger guns.
- 29:05Speaker 5: Yeah, totally.
- 29:05Speaker 4: It's a long distance marriage.
- 29:07Speaker 3: Oh oh, sure could have been.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe he was serving overseas. Another reason we shouldn't
- 29:14Speaker 2: disparage this tattoo.
- 29:15Speaker 5: That's fair. You can't fair.
- 29:17Speaker 4: You can't be knocking the American flag. I don't care
- 29:19Speaker 4: what it looks like.
- 29:21Speaker 5: That is fair.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Well, uh Patrick, I should say Will Patrick, I'm not
- 29:28Speaker 3: sure who to think here. Patrick, thanks for setting this in. Will,
- 29:31Speaker 3: thanks for the tattoo. Hopefully you are aware that your
- 29:34Speaker 3: friend was putting you on blast. And uh yeah, if
- 29:38Speaker 3: you do, take my advice and mark those out with
- 29:42Speaker 3: a sharpie. Just crossed him out as you count them
- 29:45Speaker 3: right back in and let us know what you come
- 29:46Speaker 3: up with.
- 29:47Speaker 4: And Will if you are listening, we want to hear
- 29:49Speaker 4: from your wife real bad.
- 29:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I actually yeah, will if you're out there, let
- 29:52Speaker 3: us know how you managed to pull off that two
- 29:56Speaker 3: year long deception. Phil. Why don't we take a break
- 30:02Speaker 3: here for some listener feedback?
- 30:04Speaker 2: Yeah? Sure, Uh four kids is asking. Oh oh, and.
- 30:08Speaker 3: We have a very special guest.
- 30:11Speaker 2: What's going on here?
- 30:12Speaker 3: Oh boy, look at this fella. Come on in, hop
- 30:16Speaker 3: in there, chat ladies and gentlemen, mister Clay Newcomb has
- 30:21Speaker 3: entered the studio.
- 30:22Speaker 4: Do you up and show everyone your your pants?
- 30:24Speaker 9: There?
- 30:25Speaker 5: Where where are the cameras?
- 30:27Speaker 6: It's kind of hard to see how you?
- 30:28Speaker 4: Yeah, go move over there.
- 30:30Speaker 3: We'll have you hop We'll have you hop up on
- 30:32Speaker 3: the table here before we let you go. Clay, Welcome, Welcome,
- 30:36Speaker 3: great to see everybody. You're just in time for a
- 30:39Speaker 3: couple hiker in questions and comments from the chat here.
- 30:42Speaker 4: You're doing first light product testing there?
- 30:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 30:45Speaker 9: Absolutely, h I was literally just like not a joke
- 30:49Speaker 9: came out of the first lot design meeting.
- 30:51Speaker 2: On that note, Huntman eight three four saw you in
- 30:54Speaker 2: the thumbnail and says, what are you doing in these parts?
- 30:56Speaker 2: Clay pops knuckles and some sort of aggressive stance. I
- 30:59Speaker 2: don't know why he's popping his knuckles like he wants
- 31:01Speaker 2: to fight you.
- 31:02Speaker 9: What are you doing in these parts? Well, you know,
- 31:05Speaker 9: I'm in Montana for for a first light design meeting,
- 31:10Speaker 9: like for real and uh and for the Mediator holiday party.
- 31:15Speaker 5: Yeah, we're looking forward to that.
- 31:16Speaker 9: Yeah, it's big, big.
- 31:18Speaker 3: So the theme for this year's holiday party is fur
- 31:22Speaker 3: and we were encouraged to wear our best furs. So yeah,
- 31:25Speaker 3: I assume that these chaps are perhaps related to that
- 31:29Speaker 3: and not the product workshop. Well, these are my buddy.
- 31:35Speaker 9: Uh, I had these, and now I learned this the
- 31:39Speaker 9: correct way to say it is shaps, not chaps.
- 31:44Speaker 2: Is it French shap?
- 31:45Speaker 9: No, it's just it's just the way the cowboys and
- 31:48Speaker 9: mule skinners pronounce it, and you'll be corrected, all right.
- 31:51Speaker 9: So the shaps, and they're they're fur out shaps, which
- 31:54Speaker 9: are actually pretty functional. I mean, people like a lot
- 31:58Speaker 9: of times they use wool like sheep wool, but to
- 32:03Speaker 9: have fur out bear skin shaps is like top level,
- 32:07Speaker 9: top shelf, very nice. Yeah, I had my buddy make
- 32:10Speaker 9: these from a This is actually an Oklahoma bear that
- 32:13Speaker 9: I killed, and I wear them occasionally. They've actually got
- 32:16Speaker 9: cockle bears.
- 32:17Speaker 3: Is this the one you got that on the ground?
- 32:19Speaker 9: No, this was a different one. Oh gotcha, this is
- 32:21Speaker 9: a different one.
- 32:22Speaker 3: What else we got here?
- 32:23Speaker 5: Phil?
- 32:24Speaker 2: Oh, Like, I gotta go back to my other tab here. Okay,
- 32:28Speaker 2: I think we all, I think everyone here is going
- 32:29Speaker 2: to know the answer to this question. But just to
- 32:31Speaker 2: sec set the record straight for the listeners, Jared is asking,
- 32:34Speaker 2: are we real Christmas tree or fake Christmas tree? People?
- 32:38Speaker 2: Tis the season.
- 32:39Speaker 9: I just read an article about how actually Christmas tree
- 32:43Speaker 9: farms are really good for the world, Like they were
- 32:47Speaker 9: talking about it, and I mean it was kind of
- 32:48Speaker 9: like an environmental thing. Basically, it takes ten years to
- 32:52Speaker 9: grow a Christmas tree, and these Christmas tree tree farms
- 32:55Speaker 9: are actually providing like habitat essentially for you know, at
- 33:00Speaker 9: some level, it's monoculture.
- 33:03Speaker 4: So there's a lot of things in a Christmas tree farm.
- 33:05Speaker 4: We go on chop ours down in the forest.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Yeps down as well. We got a got a nice
- 33:12Speaker 3: one just the other day, actually twelve footer.
- 33:15Speaker 6: Well nice.
- 33:18Speaker 3: Yeah, there's there's some debate about whether I saw.
- 33:21Speaker 9: A meme the other day that said she was a
- 33:24Speaker 9: ten in the woods, but uh, two in the house
- 33:28Speaker 9: and it was talking about the Christmas tree.
- 33:30Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 33:31Speaker 9: Actually my daughter showed that to me.
- 33:33Speaker 5: It was funny.
- 33:33Speaker 9: It was like a real ugly Christmas tree. I guess
- 33:37Speaker 9: that could be slightly inappropriate.
- 33:39Speaker 3: I hope that's not.
- 33:43Speaker 6: Qualified what we were talking about.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Okay, okay, yeah, people look at you funny if you
- 33:47Speaker 2: don't cut down your own Christmas tree in this office.
- 33:51Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 33:51Speaker 3: Although, man, the convenience of a fake tree, you know,
- 33:55Speaker 3: I just think you don't have to water it. I
- 33:57Speaker 3: have to crawl around on the ground with a picture
- 33:59Speaker 3: of water and don't have to sweep up needs.
- 34:02Speaker 5: I also saw.
- 34:05Speaker 9: A comedian the other day that said, all dads want
- 34:08Speaker 9: to talk about it Christmas time is how much water
- 34:10Speaker 9: that tree's sucking up.
- 34:12Speaker 3: It's like every morning you walk like.
- 34:15Speaker 9: Oh, darn, I gotta put another mason jar water in
- 34:19Speaker 9: that Christmas tree.
- 34:20Speaker 2: And four kids is asking anyone from the crew doing
- 34:24Speaker 2: Muzzleloaders season.
- 34:26Speaker 4: Steve is, Steve is, I'm sure there's a couple other people.
- 34:29Speaker 5: Yeah, and there going yeah.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Keith is asking, and I can answer this, but how
- 34:34Speaker 2: do you sign up to be one of the five
- 34:35Speaker 2: hundred meat Eater listeners that Spencer surveys for the family
- 34:39Speaker 2: feud type game. Lately, he's been going to the meat
- 34:43Speaker 2: Eater subreddit. So if you go to reddit dot com,
- 34:47Speaker 2: slash our slash meat Eater Tv, there's a nice community
- 34:51Speaker 2: of folks there having discussions about our operation here, and
- 34:55Speaker 2: Spencer will often go up there and hit them up
- 34:57Speaker 2: and ask them to fill out a Google doc with
- 34:59Speaker 2: all of the family questions. So if you want to
- 35:01Speaker 2: be a part of that, head on over to the
- 35:03Speaker 2: subrededit and subscribe. Do you guys have any man? I
- 35:06Speaker 2: feel like we're hitting all these these Christmas questions early,
- 35:08Speaker 2: but these are some of the only ones we've gotten
- 35:09Speaker 2: in the show. Well, this is a big one. Wild game.
- 35:13Speaker 2: Recipes for Christmas, you have go tos.
- 35:17Speaker 3: I don't really have a go to for for Christmas itself,
- 35:21Speaker 3: but typically when we are you know, if we're hosting
- 35:25Speaker 3: family or for visiting folks, it's a good time to
- 35:29Speaker 3: bring a cooler full of meat and pass it around
- 35:32Speaker 3: and share it with folks. And then you know, typically
- 35:35Speaker 3: if we're making a big dinner for the family a
- 35:37Speaker 3: few nights in a row, one of those nights will
- 35:40Speaker 3: do some elk steaks and the grill and yeah.
- 35:42Speaker 4: I mean a lot of it depends on what you
- 35:45Speaker 4: piled up that year.
- 35:47Speaker 6: Like we'll do some combo of.
- 35:50Speaker 4: Fish and.
- 35:52Speaker 9: Fish for Christmas, Oh.
- 35:54Speaker 4: Yeah, like some salmon, king salmon or halibed or and
- 35:59Speaker 4: then we'll also have some kind of red meat, like
- 36:03Speaker 4: you know, a moose, backstrap, elk, tenderloin.
- 36:06Speaker 9: Whatever this may not. I don't know how this opinion
- 36:08Speaker 9: will hit the room, considering this is where we worked
- 36:12Speaker 9: for meat Eater. But I had I had. Somebody asked
- 36:17Speaker 9: me the other day at a basketball game. They were like, Claire,
- 36:20Speaker 9: you having bear for Thanksgiving? And I was like, no,
- 36:25Speaker 9: I eat bear like literally three four days a week.
- 36:30Speaker 9: A lot of times. On Thanksgiving, we yardbirds and pig yeah,
- 36:35Speaker 9: you know, ham turkey, Like this is the one time
- 36:37Speaker 9: of year we actually don't cook a wild game, I think,
- 36:41Speaker 9: which is maybe.
- 36:43Speaker 6: And I have done.
- 36:46Speaker 4: You know, hind quarter hands off of like a wait
- 36:49Speaker 4: till dough.
- 36:50Speaker 3: Great, they're great, but I do think it would perhaps
- 36:55Speaker 3: be off brand. Uh maybe embarrassing to the company if
- 36:59Speaker 3: folks out there knew how many butter balls.
- 37:02Speaker 9: Yeah yeah, yeah, well but people think it. I think
- 37:07Speaker 9: it proved the point to the guy because he was like, oh, man,
- 37:09Speaker 9: I bet Clay and his family once a year they
- 37:12Speaker 9: eat a bear ham for Thanksgiving and it's like, no, man.
- 37:16Speaker 3: Well, a lot of people around here say they're you know,
- 37:19Speaker 3: I was asking some people if they're doing any wild turkey,
- 37:22Speaker 3: and they said, I eat all my wild turkey by
- 37:24Speaker 3: the middle of the summer.
- 37:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 37:26Speaker 3: Yeah, that stuff going like April and then keep it
- 37:30Speaker 3: frozen all the year.
- 37:31Speaker 4: And not like a whole roasted wild turkey.
- 37:35Speaker 2: Like it's They're just not.
- 37:38Speaker 5: Yeah, this is nothing.
- 37:39Speaker 4: No, you're gonna do to make it even close to it.
- 37:41Speaker 5: Butter Ball figured it out. Yeah, butter Ball figured it out.
- 37:45Speaker 2: So this is going to be something raydal you were
- 37:47Speaker 2: going to talk about at the end of the show.
- 37:48Speaker 2: But it it surprised me so much I have to
- 37:50Speaker 2: bring it up for the Q and A. So Keith
- 37:52Speaker 2: asks what film did he do next, referring to the
- 37:55Speaker 2: Meat Eater Movie Club, and you're your selection. Graham then
- 37:59Speaker 2: suggests Guy on a Buffalo. Keith says, yes, Guy on
- 38:02Speaker 2: a Buffalo. Forgot all about that, and then Keith pipes
- 38:05Speaker 2: in I think the movie was called Buffalo writer. How
- 38:08Speaker 2: Perselt writer nineteen seventy eight. Randall do you want to
- 38:11Speaker 2: take it away, Keith.
- 38:11Speaker 3: I hate to correct you, but I believe it's an
- 38:13Speaker 3: hour and twenty eight minutes. I was going to announce
- 38:17Speaker 3: this before we wrapped up here, but we are doing
- 38:21Speaker 3: Meat Eater Movie Club next week and we will be
- 38:23Speaker 3: discussing the nineteen seventy eight film Buffalo Rider, and you
- 38:27Speaker 3: can stream that for free on twob Roku and or
- 38:31Speaker 3: Pluto TV. So if you'd like to weigh in with
- 38:34Speaker 3: your thoughts next week, you know, carve out an hour
- 38:38Speaker 3: and a half your time and we'll see you then
- 38:41Speaker 3: to discuss this film. It's it is the origin of
- 38:45Speaker 3: the guy on a Buffalo meme if you're familiar with that,
- 38:48Speaker 3: and it looks to be a rich text, so we'll
- 38:51Speaker 3: look forward to digging in.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Well, we'll call it there, but if you guys have
- 38:54Speaker 2: any Clay questions now that Clay is here, well you
- 38:57Speaker 2: can hit those up at the end of the show.
- 38:59Speaker 3: Yeah. With that, I think our next segment is a
- 39:04Speaker 3: hot tip Off Hot tip Off time. The hot tip
- 39:14Speaker 3: off is where.
- 39:18Speaker 6: We're just making them up.
- 39:19Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 39:19Speaker 3: The hot tip off is where members of the crew
- 39:22Speaker 3: go head to head with competing pieces of advice. After
- 39:25Speaker 3: we hear each tip, we'll declare which one is hotter.
- 39:28Speaker 3: This week our hot tips come from Jannis, Steve and
- 39:32Speaker 3: Cal Take it away Phil Yunny's food jail is.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Hey, welcome to another hot tip off.
- 39:43Speaker 6: Just got this.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Tip from a buddy, Chris Gill who's behind the camera.
- 39:47Speaker 1: But if you ever in this situation where you have
- 39:50Speaker 1: a trailer, you don't have the proper size lugnut ranch
- 39:53Speaker 1: for so you can't break it free because they're only
- 39:56Speaker 1: they're so tight. So you're just using your regular socket
- 39:58Speaker 1: set the EB in your truck, you can't get enough leverage.
- 40:02Speaker 1: Just use another socket with the extension and stick it
- 40:05Speaker 1: on the handle there. It's probably gonna be just enough
- 40:10Speaker 1: to give you that extra leverage.
- 40:13Speaker 9: Mm hmm.
- 40:15Speaker 6: Wow, that's reserved.
- 40:19Speaker 9: Invigorating.
- 40:21Speaker 5: What do another hot tip off?
- 40:24Speaker 8: Everyone knows that pulling the leg on a Kyo it's
- 40:28Speaker 8: paint in the butt.
- 40:29Speaker 4: Mm hm.
- 40:30Speaker 6: Take a sharpman rod.
- 40:33Speaker 5: Once you get it through.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Here will kind of work down, we see, once you
- 40:39Speaker 2: get it through, take a sharpman.
- 40:40Speaker 9: Steel, put it in there.
- 40:46Speaker 5: Slick as you please. Right, sharp and steel, mm hmmm.
- 40:56Speaker 3: Right in Callian, that's a good one.
- 41:00Speaker 8: It's a public play station all sorts of awesome arenas
- 41:05Speaker 8: and docks and stuff. Have these really awesome resource for
- 41:09Speaker 8: the traveling angler. You can get all done here, but
- 41:12Speaker 8: it is a public station. There's individual voters, there's first timers,
- 41:18Speaker 8: there's long timers, there's guys, outfitters, I eat, folks who
- 41:23Speaker 8: really know what they're doing, and folks who don't. So
- 41:26Speaker 8: the best that you can do, regardless of your skill level,
- 41:30Speaker 8: is keep your stuff.
- 41:32Speaker 7: On your own zone, eat and tidy.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Bring a blow for fish spines, and when.
- 41:38Speaker 8: It's time to.
- 41:39Speaker 4: Clean stuff up, you clean.
- 41:42Speaker 8: Up your area, stick and spam, get rid of all
- 41:46Speaker 8: the scales and the little chumps. Young stone doesn't stay
- 41:49Speaker 8: and attract a bunch of bugs. And most importantly, you're
- 41:52Speaker 8: spraying your area down, not your neighbor.
- 41:57Speaker 6: Okay, here off here, I have.
- 42:04Speaker 4: I have three thoughts you should there's three tip offs.
- 42:07Speaker 3: One Jannis has.
- 42:10Speaker 5: I don't think that's a hot tip off.
- 42:12Speaker 3: Yannis is simply was unaware that a tool exists called
- 42:16Speaker 3: a breaker bar, which is used to add leverage to.
- 42:22Speaker 5: He didn't Wrenches had a breaker bar with him.
- 42:25Speaker 9: That was kind of the point of the tip.
- 42:27Speaker 3: But I feel like, was that not a breaker bar
- 42:31Speaker 3: that was just another socket.
- 42:33Speaker 5: Oh, it was just another socket.
- 42:36Speaker 6: But I think it's like.
- 42:39Speaker 4: If you don't know that trick, it's kind of.
- 42:41Speaker 3: Like, yeah, hot tip leverage two. Cal's tip seemed very
- 42:48Speaker 3: specific and maybe sort of just a direct attack on
- 42:53Speaker 3: his neighbor at that fish cleaning station at that very minute.
- 42:57Speaker 3: It seemed oddly defensive of his space. It seemed like
- 43:00Speaker 3: maybe he had been sprayed a few minutes before.
- 43:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't you like it's all it's great info
- 43:07Speaker 4: like what he's telling people to do. I don't think
- 43:09Speaker 4: it's a tip that like results in you. Like there's
- 43:14Speaker 4: no like ultimate payoff, Like it's just like, yeah, being
- 43:20Speaker 4: being nice, use don't.
- 43:21Speaker 5: Take up too much space, keep your space clean.
- 43:24Speaker 9: It was kind of like just given an excuse, you're
- 43:28Speaker 9: having an excuse to like give someone a tip on
- 43:32Speaker 9: their character.
- 43:33Speaker 5: Yes, yes, exactly.
- 43:35Speaker 3: It was more of a dig, which I do a lot,
- 43:37Speaker 3: and sure Steve as sort of the only real hot tip.
- 43:43Speaker 3: I think Steve wins by default.
- 43:44Speaker 4: Well, also that little trick he's showing you, I think
- 43:48Speaker 4: you could use skin and deer skin and other like
- 43:51Speaker 4: you could maybe and you don't need that particular tool
- 43:55Speaker 4: to do it.
- 43:55Speaker 3: But something like, yeah, a breaker part or if you
- 43:59Speaker 3: don't have that socket wrench.
- 44:00Speaker 4: But I feel like that's useful. You do a lot
- 44:03Speaker 4: of skin in them.
- 44:06Speaker 9: You know, now that I hear the actual critique and
- 44:08Speaker 9: I'm a little more familiar with how we were doing
- 44:10Speaker 9: the hot tip off. When we realized that the other
- 44:12Speaker 9: two really weren't hot tips, and so Steve was really
- 44:16Speaker 9: the only hot tips. We kind of got to vote
- 44:17Speaker 9: for Steve's But before that, I was gonna say, I
- 44:21Speaker 9: don't think he really needed the bar, Like he could
- 44:24Speaker 9: have just used his hands. I think he was kind
- 44:26Speaker 9: of he's kind of over dramatized.
- 44:28Speaker 4: I was there and that bar was like those coyotes
- 44:33Speaker 4: had sat.
- 44:35Speaker 6: Around for a little bit.
- 44:37Speaker 5: If you're skin yeah, warm.
- 44:42Speaker 1: Like it.
- 44:42Speaker 6: I was there and it made a huge difference.
- 44:44Speaker 9: Well, okay, yeah, I trust you.
- 44:46Speaker 5: You ought to try it.
- 44:47Speaker 3: And if any listeners out there have hot tips for
- 44:50Speaker 3: reducing ambient noise when recording short video segments in the field,
- 44:55Speaker 3: those would be much appreciated by Steven cow I would
- 44:59Speaker 3: also appreciate it.
- 45:02Speaker 6: Well.
- 45:02Speaker 3: Our next segment today is Phil's Trivia.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Oh God, it's happening.
- 45:06Speaker 6: Oh I love this part.
- 45:08Speaker 2: Uh, welcome to phil Trivia, the only game show where
- 45:12Speaker 2: I always win. I am your host, Phil the Engineer,
- 45:14Speaker 2: and today we're joined by Randall, Brody and Cal And
- 45:17Speaker 2: for some reason, the way the I said, Cal, Clay.
- 45:20Speaker 9: You know close.
- 45:21Speaker 2: I'm so sorry, Clay.
- 45:23Speaker 9: It's okay, great, feel bad.
- 45:24Speaker 2: We've been working together for so long.
- 45:26Speaker 5: God, okay, get back in.
- 45:29Speaker 2: This is a three round quiz show with questions that
- 45:31Speaker 2: have little to nothing to do with meat eaters, four verticals,
- 45:33Speaker 2: and instead will be centered around pop culture and entertainment.
- 45:36Speaker 2: And there's definitely not a prize, so suck at Conservation Orgs. Also,
- 45:41Speaker 2: the auto white balance on this camera is making me
- 45:43Speaker 2: look like a smurf. That is not intentional deliberate, but
- 45:47Speaker 2: that's that's how it's working.
- 45:48Speaker 5: Hey.
- 45:49Speaker 2: And for the stat of the week this week. Today,
- 45:50Speaker 2: for Phil's Trivia, we will be mixing it up a bit.
- 45:53Speaker 2: Instead of using the usual ten point game that Spencer
- 45:56Speaker 2: plays or the three point game that I played last time,
- 45:58Speaker 2: there will be a possible twelve points my goodness to
- 46:02Speaker 2: earn today. How you ask well, there will be three
- 46:05Speaker 2: themed rounds with four quick hit or mini questions in
- 46:08Speaker 2: each round. Still confused, you shouldn't be and there's no
- 46:12Speaker 2: housekeeping this week because I keep my shit clean by
- 46:15Speaker 2: not asking nonsensical questions that involve Guy Fieri. And with that,
- 46:22Speaker 2: oh no, I got a prep stuff. We're on to
- 46:23Speaker 2: the game of trivia. Play the drop me.
- 46:29Speaker 3: Power resides where men believe it resides.
- 46:34Speaker 4: It's a trick, a shadow on the walls.
- 46:37Speaker 5: That happened.
- 46:44Speaker 2: You're in the Great Game now, in the Great Games, terrifying.
- 46:49Speaker 3: Oh that's fantastic, Phil, Donid White, thank you.
- 46:51Speaker 2: You know we do. I didn't prep this at all.
- 46:53Speaker 2: It's kind of a scramble to start this recording today.
- 46:55Speaker 2: But yeah, you can grab those Clay that would be
- 46:58Speaker 2: doing live, so you in it live and could you
- 47:01Speaker 2: pass one to me as well?
- 47:03Speaker 5: A couple of markers there.
- 47:04Speaker 2: I'm sure the audience doesn't mind watching all of this.
- 47:06Speaker 2: This is this is how the show is made. This
- 47:08Speaker 2: is the live people.
- 47:13Speaker 5: Oh yeah, seamless.
- 47:16Speaker 4: I don't like this color, Clay, get I want a difference.
- 47:18Speaker 2: I'll take that one, Clay, Phil's trivia.
- 47:25Speaker 4: I'm not sure I like purple either, but I'll go
- 47:27Speaker 4: with it.
- 47:31Speaker 5: I'm good with green.
- 47:34Speaker 9: There be some Star Wars trivia in this, Clay.
- 47:39Speaker 2: No spoilers all right. Our first category is classic rock.
- 47:46Speaker 2: If you think and I put it back in your pants, Spencer,
- 47:48Speaker 2: it's not what you think. I'm going to be asking
- 47:50Speaker 2: questions about classic rock music. Specifically, I would like you
- 47:56Speaker 2: to tell me the chronological order of release of these
- 48:02Speaker 2: classic rock albums. I will listen them for you right now.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Your options are The Beatles White Album, Rumors from Fleetwood Mac,
- 48:11Speaker 2: David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Starred Us
- 48:13Speaker 2: and the Spiders from Mars, and Bridge over Troubled Water
- 48:16Speaker 2: from Simon and Garfunkle. Please list the albums and the
- 48:20Speaker 2: order of their release. There's a possible, a possibility possibility
- 48:24Speaker 2: to get zero, one, two, or four points where A yes,
- 48:30Speaker 2: the White Album from the Beatles Rumors by Fleetwood Mac,
- 48:33Speaker 2: Ziggy Starred Us from David Bowie, and Bridge over Troubled
- 48:36Speaker 2: Water from Simon and Garfunkle. Mm, great question, Phil, Thank you?
- 48:43Speaker 2: And uh so, the way you can get one, two
- 48:46Speaker 2: or four points. If you get them all right, you
- 48:48Speaker 2: get four. But if you get one in a correct
- 48:51Speaker 2: slot but some other ones are mixed up, great, you
- 48:54Speaker 2: still get that one point.
- 48:55Speaker 5: Great? So are you ready to go here? I think
- 48:58Speaker 5: we've got our answers.
- 48:59Speaker 6: No, not even close.
- 49:02Speaker 10: Oh my bad. Clay's writing, hmm, Brodie's writing.
- 49:16Speaker 2: I apologize for not having a TikTok clock. The last
- 49:19Speaker 2: time I tried to do sound effects of this game,
- 49:21Speaker 2: I ended up creating a loop for the YouTube stream
- 49:23Speaker 2: and it ruined everything. And I'm just not going to
- 49:24Speaker 2: take that chance. So just imagine it. Yeah, you guys,
- 49:28Speaker 2: fans have in any of these records, you guys, I
- 49:31Speaker 2: mean rumors is just.
- 49:32Speaker 4: Yeah, hit Max great, there's some good stuff on that
- 49:35Speaker 4: Bowie album. I'm a stones Man, not a Beatles Beatles.
- 49:40Speaker 2: That's why we can never get one one or the other. Phil,
- 49:43Speaker 2: that's true.
- 49:44Speaker 9: I'm not sure, Arkansas.
- 49:50Speaker 2: How are we doing, folks?
- 49:51Speaker 5: I think we're good.
- 49:52Speaker 2: We're good, all right, go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 49:56Speaker 2: We have Randall saying the White album, I'm in a Garfuncle,
- 50:02Speaker 2: David Bowie and Fleetwood Mac.
- 50:06Speaker 4: These aren't and I'll you want I numbered him?
- 50:09Speaker 6: You want me to?
- 50:09Speaker 4: Yeah, sure, I went Beatles, Simon and Garfunkele, Fleetwood Mac,
- 50:14Speaker 4: David Bowie.
- 50:16Speaker 2: And Clay says Beatles Bowie, Simon and Garfunkle and Fleetwood
- 50:23Speaker 2: Mac the correct order is the White Album nineteen sixty eight,
- 50:33Speaker 2: Bridge Over Troubled Water, Simon and Garfuncle nineteen seventy David
- 50:38Speaker 2: Bowie he started us with in nineteen seventy two, and
- 50:40Speaker 2: that leaves rumors in nineteen seventy seven. I believe Randall
- 50:45Speaker 2: four points you got one.
- 50:47Speaker 6: I believe that the Beatles two.
- 50:49Speaker 2: You got two.
- 50:50Speaker 6: It was Beatles and Simon and Garfunkle, right.
- 50:52Speaker 2: Yes, yes, okay, sorry, And then Clay, I believe you
- 50:55Speaker 2: got two with Beatles and Fleetwood Mac at number four. Correct,
- 50:59Speaker 2: right on. Good job, guys, you have to a great
- 51:03Speaker 2: start here. This next round is called posting on Maine.
- 51:07Speaker 2: Oh and hey, are you talking about like posting Grip
- 51:11Speaker 2: and Grims on Instagram for that digital affirmation? No, I'm
- 51:14Speaker 2: going to be showing you small portions of iconic movie
- 51:18Speaker 2: posters zoomed in, and I would like for you to
- 51:22Speaker 2: tell me the movie that that image is from the
- 51:26Speaker 2: movie poster.
- 51:27Speaker 5: It's great, Phil, this is clever.
- 51:30Speaker 2: Your first image. What movie poster contains? This ten cent
- 51:38Speaker 2: little stamp for the audio listener. It's a round golden circle.
- 51:43Speaker 2: It says ten cents on it. Let me know when
- 51:46Speaker 2: you guys have an answer.
- 51:47Speaker 9: This is a movie.
- 51:48Speaker 2: This is a movie, a movie poster. Just tell me
- 51:54Speaker 2: the movie or.
- 51:59Speaker 5: We just gonna keep going.
- 52:00Speaker 2: No, no, no, yeah, when you guys have to have
- 52:03Speaker 2: this one down, you guys have an answer. Everyone has
- 52:05Speaker 2: an answer, all right? Correct. We've got Randall saying pulp fiction,
- 52:09Speaker 2: Brody saying pulp fiction, Clay saying Catcher in the Rye.
- 52:13Speaker 2: The correct answer is pulp fiction. Way to go, Randal
- 52:19Speaker 2: and Brody.
- 52:21Speaker 9: I wouldn't allowed to watch that film.
- 52:23Speaker 2: Yeah, that makes sense. The next image we have an
- 52:27Speaker 2: animated drawing of a horse for the audio listeners. An
- 52:30Speaker 2: animated is it an animated movie of a horse? There
- 52:33Speaker 2: will be no hints, no hints, oh man, iconic movie posters.
- 52:46Speaker 2: Do we have any ideas from the table? Are you
- 52:48Speaker 2: guys thinking.
- 52:49Speaker 5: Who framed Roger Rabbit?
- 52:54Speaker 2: That is a movie?
- 52:56Speaker 4: Uh?
- 52:56Speaker 2: Robert Zemeckis, I.
- 52:58Speaker 5: Might, I might my white flag here?
- 53:01Speaker 2: Okay?
- 53:01Speaker 5: Even nowhere to go?
- 53:03Speaker 9: Brodie Clay, I've got nothing. I mean, I could come
- 53:06Speaker 9: up with an answer.
- 53:08Speaker 6: But yeah, nothing The Chipmunks.
- 53:11Speaker 5: That's not even a movie.
- 53:12Speaker 2: That's too bad. The correct answer is National Lampoons.
- 53:15Speaker 3: Animal Yes, sure.
- 53:18Speaker 2: Animal House. I wasn't necessarily thinking that the horse would
- 53:22Speaker 2: give it away. But maybe the animation style.
- 53:24Speaker 5: Yeah yeah.
- 53:25Speaker 2: A lot of the those like sex comedies from the
- 53:27Speaker 2: eighties use this sort of style. I think this was
- 53:29Speaker 2: probably the most famous one. Next image, a foot in
- 53:35Speaker 2: some sort of net or stocking. An outstretched foot and
- 53:43Speaker 2: some netting or pante hoose, how's everyone feeling? Got an answer?
- 53:50Speaker 9: You got to answer?
- 53:51Speaker 5: Brody?
- 53:51Speaker 4: Yep, don't worry, Clay, it's all it's on the up
- 53:55Speaker 4: and up.
- 53:58Speaker 2: The correct answer is the graduate. Oh, Phil, hey, oh,
- 54:03Speaker 2: and that's for answers.
- 54:04Speaker 9: How do you guys know all this stuff?
- 54:06Speaker 2: Random? Brody, great job.
- 54:08Speaker 4: I think that's a pretty famous image.
- 54:11Speaker 2: Again, iconic. Last one for this round.
- 54:14Speaker 9: We didn't get film in Arkansas till the nineties.
- 54:21Speaker 2: Don't play cold with me, Clay. You you were you
- 54:23Speaker 2: were spilling some secrets on the live tour about some
- 54:25Speaker 2: some video games you dabbled in in Arkansas.
- 54:27Speaker 5: For real.
- 54:28Speaker 2: I'm gonna put you on blast here.
- 54:30Speaker 9: What did I say? I have no recollection Oregon trail, Yeah, Froger.
- 54:38Speaker 2: All right. For the audio listeners, we have a silhouetted
- 54:40Speaker 2: portrait of a man standing. It's got a hat. He's
- 54:42Speaker 2: carrying some sort of case, some sort of suitcase. Randall,
- 54:49Speaker 2: I believe has an answer. Oh I do Brody and Clay,
- 54:53Speaker 2: how we feeling mmm?
- 54:58Speaker 6: Not feeling good?
- 54:59Speaker 4: Because I should know it.
- 55:02Speaker 2: Oh, I think I can give you about ten seconds here.
- 55:09Speaker 4: I know this is wrong.
- 55:13Speaker 2: Up, Clay's right and something down.
- 55:14Speaker 3: Oh I still can't get over your blue tin.
- 55:17Speaker 2: I know it kind of it's adding to the ambiu.
- 55:19Speaker 3: It look like the child from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
- 55:22Speaker 2: Violent beat regard. Yeah, yeah, she she she chewed the gum. Yeah,
- 55:27Speaker 2: you're turning Violet. Violet.
- 55:31Speaker 9: You actually probably could like be her brother.
- 55:33Speaker 2: All right, Oh yeah, I'll see the answers first. I'll
- 55:36Speaker 2: do it the correct way. Randall says the Exorcist. Brody
- 55:39Speaker 2: says vertigo. Good guess. Clay says Matt Wock. Just I
- 55:44Speaker 2: can second here. You got that, and the correct answer
- 55:47Speaker 2: is the Exorcist. It's like we got a point for
- 55:50Speaker 2: Randall there. Well, at the end of round two, we've
- 55:53Speaker 2: got Clay with two points, Brody with four, and Randall
- 55:56Speaker 2: with seven. Our last round is where I piss all
- 56:00Speaker 2: of you off. This one's just for me. This one's
- 56:03Speaker 2: called sound bites. It has nothing to do with food
- 56:07Speaker 2: or Ben Affleck. I just think these paparazzi images of
- 56:09Speaker 2: Ben Affleck struggling to carry food into his house are
- 56:12Speaker 2: very funny. In this round, I will be playing sounds
- 56:16Speaker 2: or music samples from famous video game franchises, all right,
- 56:22Speaker 2: and I would like for you to tell me the
- 56:23Speaker 2: video game franchise. Not a specific game, sure, sure, but
- 56:28Speaker 2: all these sounds come up from from storied. It's not
- 56:31Speaker 2: just one game. It's big, famous things that even people
- 56:34Speaker 2: who don't play video games have probably heard of. Sure,
- 56:37Speaker 2: so let's move on to the first sound. Here it is.
- 56:54Speaker 9: Randall's got it, I answered before I heard it.
- 56:59Speaker 2: Really okay, excited to see what it is. And the
- 57:02Speaker 2: thing is here. Here's the thing. I picked these all
- 57:04Speaker 2: the all the answers are something that you could guess
- 57:06Speaker 2: and you might get it. I didn't choose anything to obscure.
- 57:09Speaker 2: So all right, let's see those see those answers, Randall says, Zelda,
- 57:15Speaker 2: Brodie says pac Man. Clay says Zelda.
- 57:18Speaker 9: If I got this right, I should get a lot
- 57:21Speaker 9: of points because I literally looked at the twinkle in
- 57:24Speaker 9: your eye and made that I wrote that Beefore.
- 57:27Speaker 2: The direct answer is the legend of Zelda, specifically from
- 57:30Speaker 2: the opera of Time. However, it plays in a lot
- 57:33Speaker 2: of the game, a big chest that has like, you know,
- 57:37Speaker 2: more important job.
- 57:42Speaker 3: I think it's getting tight here?
- 57:43Speaker 6: Did you know or did you guess?
- 57:45Speaker 9: I mean, I didn't know. I did not recognize the noise.
- 57:48Speaker 4: How can you be proud of your answer?
- 57:51Speaker 9: Because I looked at the twinkle in Phil's eyes before
- 57:54Speaker 9: I heard the sound clip and wrote zeld, I wouldn't
- 57:57Speaker 9: have even known.
- 57:59Speaker 4: From your rounding environment to come up.
- 58:02Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 58:02Speaker 2: Got, that's that's what. That's a method that works.
- 58:05Speaker 6: All right.
- 58:06Speaker 2: Next sound.
- 58:09Speaker 4: Hey, that's right, that same answer I had before.
- 58:18Speaker 2: Would like to hear it again.
- 58:20Speaker 5: No, I'm good.
- 58:21Speaker 2: I'm gonna play it anyone, all right, go ahead and
- 58:26Speaker 2: reveal your answers. Pac Man pac Man Clay, says Mario.
- 58:30Speaker 2: The correct answer is indeed, pac.
- 58:33Speaker 5: Man Brody clued me in.
- 58:39Speaker 6: Yeah, that one, I don't know.
- 58:44Speaker 2: I don't know. Bert Brodie was the only one.
- 58:45Speaker 3: Who looks I figured it was rather primitive.
- 58:48Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, next, sound up again. It's just the franchise,
- 59:09Speaker 2: just the franchise.
- 59:11Speaker 3: Is this a later derivative of an earlier.
- 59:14Speaker 2: Oh, we'll get to that. All right, in the mini
- 59:16Speaker 2: follow up factoid, I have for this one specific mini question.
- 59:21Speaker 2: Listen to it again one more time. Then Expeer answers
- 59:24Speaker 2: Play has already showed me. Clay says Mario.
- 59:27Speaker 6: Again.
- 59:27Speaker 2: You know that that that that works too, okay, Randall,
- 59:30Speaker 2: says Mario. Brod he says street fighter play says Mario.
- 59:33Speaker 2: The correct answer is Final Fantasy Fantasy. So that is
- 59:39Speaker 2: the victory theme. Whenever you win a battle, it plays
- 59:41Speaker 2: that song. It's been the same melody since the original
- 59:44Speaker 2: Final Fantasy came out in the eighties, and to show
- 59:48Speaker 2: how it's evolved, I made a montage of three of them.
- 59:51Speaker 2: This is the very first one. Oh yeah, here's here's
- 59:55Speaker 2: from Final Fantasy six and here's Final Fantasy sixteen. Oh yeah,
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: it's nice, good stuff. All Right, we were down to
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: our last question. Rand has run away with this game.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: But let's go. Let's do what we're gonna do it anyway,
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: the last sound Unfortunately, I can't. I can't look at
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: the comments, guys, because the room can see the comments,
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: and I don't want them getting the answer. I'm gonna
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: open up the comments anyway, because Randall's already won the
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: game and I'm seeing how you guys are doing out here.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: See if anyone can get that one. We listen to
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: it one more time, one more time. I'm sure that
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: that will definitely catch on that. All right, go ahead
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: and reveal your answers. Randal's says Techmobowl. That's a good one,
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: Brodie Ciskellia. Clay says Mario. I like Clay's method here. Unfortunately,
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: the answer is Halo combat evolved. When you run, your
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: shield runs out and then it recharges. Now, I remember
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: we had a few. We had a bunch of people
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: get it in the chat here. Holy cow, good job gang. Anyway,
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: that wraps up Phil's trivia with nine points. Thanks doctor Randall.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: Williams is our winner. Brody had five, Clay had three. Clay,
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: I'm proud of you for getting Zelda.
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: Thanks for that, Phil. I worry that the segment might
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: lead to you leaving us here because your talents are
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: on full display and the world now has glimpsed your
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: full capability.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: This is just what I do when I when I
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: go home, So I'll do this anytime, anytime. You'll have
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: me back. Thanks, Thanks gents.
- 1:01:50Speaker 6: Well, Jay, I know.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: We need to send you on your way here. You
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: are in town for a first Light product development meeting
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: and you're gonna really going to push the bear apps.
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: But can you can you.
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: Tell us just a little bit about what you're what
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: you've been up to, and what you've been working on
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: since hunting season slowed down?
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: Well, the.
- 1:02:11Speaker 9: I had a good season, had a good, good deer season,
- 1:02:14Speaker 9: went to Alaska, killed a mountain goat with my bow,
- 1:02:17Speaker 9: which was cool. But uh, I've been Uh, the biggest
- 1:02:21Speaker 9: thing on my radar for the next year is a
- 1:02:25Speaker 9: book that I'm working on and uh, I'm I'm kind
- 1:02:28Speaker 9: of talking about it for the first time. It's uh,
- 1:02:30Speaker 9: it's been in We've been working on it for a
- 1:02:34Speaker 9: year already, and then I'll work on it basically for
- 1:02:37Speaker 9: another year. And uh, and it's about the American black Bear.
- 1:02:41Speaker 9: It's gonna be really incredible.
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: Brody.
- 1:02:43Speaker 9: By the way, we've made quite a bit of headway
- 1:02:45Speaker 9: since I last talked to you.
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I need to take a look jump in.
- 1:02:47Speaker 5: We really did.
- 1:02:48Speaker 9: I really feel like it's it's coming together but super exciting.
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: That's uh. Do you have a release date?
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: Uh?
- 1:02:55Speaker 9: Or you know, I'm I'm afraid to definitely like in the.
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: I'm sure you don't have a date on twenty six.
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: It's the twenty six place.
- 1:03:02Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, twenty six release is where we're at right now.
- 1:03:05Speaker 9: So it kind of feels it's weird to work on
- 1:03:07Speaker 9: a project that has that long of a runway. Never
- 1:03:10Speaker 9: done that before, So it's it's kind of uncomfortable to
- 1:03:13Speaker 9: talk about something that's like, you know, a year and
- 1:03:16Speaker 9: a half away. Yeah, but it really is super exciting
- 1:03:20Speaker 9: a lot of what I'm doing, and it's it's the
- 1:03:22Speaker 9: book you were born to write, man. I hope, so,
- 1:03:26Speaker 9: I hope. So it's a fascinating story man, of the
- 1:03:29Speaker 9: American black Bear and and whatever's happening ecologically on planet
- 1:03:33Speaker 9: Earth has been beneficial to black Bear and America's bear
- 1:03:38Speaker 9: stories really just beginning.
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: We're in the good old days. Yeah.
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, thank you for stopping by, and thank you
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: for entertaining us here for half hour during a very
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: busy day for you.
- 1:03:50Speaker 9: Yeah, well, appreciate it, guys.
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: Yeah, and tell them you got a couple supporters of
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: the shops for First Lights twenty twenty seven line.
- 1:03:59Speaker 9: Yeah, I'm gonna push these hard.
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: You see that I already picked up on the shaps.
- 1:04:04Speaker 9: Yeah, that was good.
- 1:04:04Speaker 5: All right, that was good, good, all right. Gus see you.
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: Phil. Do we have any any final comments or questions
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: we should address here?
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: You know, there weren't a lot. We had a couple
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: for Clay who just walked out the door.
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: Heck, we'll get him next time.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean there was a great one about how
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: he names a mule. You know, I was really excited
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: to hear that one. Honestly, we didn't I got I
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: got a lot of questions lost in the trivia playlne
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: were occupied.
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: People were too occupied with your game. Well, I do
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: have a couple calls to action for our listeners. One
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: we've already hit on today, and that is that we
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: will be discussing Buffalo Rider next week on the med
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: Eater Movie Club nineteen seventy eight.
- 1:04:46Speaker 5: Buffalo Rider.
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: You can stream it free on two B, Roku and
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: Pluto TV. So take a look at that and be
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: sure to look forward to that discussion next week. And
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: we will also be pre recording a pair of episodes

- 1:05:22Speaker 3: dot com. And yeah, please please if you got a
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: burning question or if you can think of something that

- 1:05:32Speaker 3: be much appreciated. And then finally it's I see it's
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: twelve oh five. So before we go, I have a
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: very special announcement to make, Phil, would you please, would
